Rivercrest Christian College students enjoyed a visit from Indigenous elder Murrundindi recently.

Murrundindi shared the cultural history of the Wurundjeri people who occupied the land on which Rivercrest is adjacent to.

Students explored traditional customs and were exposed to elements of the Wurundjeri lifestyle.

They had the opportunity

to try on traditional garments, as well as watch boomerang throwing, engage in a traditional Aboriginal dance and enjoy a game Aboriginal children would have played in the past.

Exploring cultural diversity is part of the global thinking routines embedded in Rivercrest Christian College that is an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Primary Years Programme.

Young people can be very vulnerable throughout their high school years, as expectations upon them change and uncertainty and stress can rear their heads.

Lyndhurst Secondary College understands that students must feel safe and supported before learning can happen and staff strategically plan programs that encourage this. They begin this process long before students begin Year 7, by working in close partnership with local primary schools to provide curriculum links and familiarisation activities with students.

In Grades 5 and 6, students are invited in to the college to experience secondary life, thereby demystifying it. Aspiring leaders also receive mentoring from Lyndhurst student leaders.

Once students begin at Lyndhurst Secondary College, the school’s efforts to promote positive wellbeing and mental health increase.

Students have daily access to wellbeing staff and a range of external support services, whenever support may be required.

If parents and carers notice anything of concern, the college encourages them to contact the staff to discuss this. The college believes the partnership between home and school is one of the most protective factors for young people and takes great pride in their approach to encouraging positive wellbeing among its students.

In less than a few decades, technology has changed the way we communicate, socialise and interact with the world. Like the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century, machines have once again changed the way we live.

While some traditional manufacturing and communicative tools have been negatively affected by this new technological revolution, many have benefited enormously.

Of course, as the world changes - so too does the way we teach and learn.

To be literate in the 21st century is more than being able to read a book and write on paper. It means knowing how to write computer programs, code robots and engage within virtual worlds.

Unquestionably, iPads and tablet devices have changed the way children interact with the world.

You would be hard pressed to find a child in the Western world who had not played Minecraft or heard of Facebook.

Fewer still who had not used a tablet device at school. It is in our cultural and social DNA. Of course, as a teacher I hear from parents who are against children having access to devices at home and school. Many see computers as a distraction; procrastination even. Some believe that it is an anti-social pastime and that their children are addicted to the device.

While too much screen time is always a concern, time managed, age-appropriate games and interactive content can do wonders for a child’s develop-

ment. I always argue in favour of balance - like a healthy diet. Everything in moderation.

Naturally, history does repeat itself. When books were printed enmasse (thanks to the invention of the Gutenberg printing press around 1440), people were appalled by the idea of children learning to read and subsequently learning to write.

The question pertained to why children needed to. It was not important. It was time wasting, procrastination even - but where would the world be now if that had not happened?

I wonder what parents of the Industrial Revolution (or even those as far back as 1440) imagined the future to be for their grandchildren - or great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren?

Did they imagine a future where robots were performing (what they considered at the time as ‘life-threating’) operations with 100 per cent accuracy and a 100 per cent survival rate? A future where virtual reality lets you feel, touch and interact with alien surroundings? A future that is as dependent on invisible waves that pass through the air, as it is dependent on the gravity that holds us down.

While learning to read and write at school is vitally important for a child’s development, the world has changed and developed.

Technology has revolutionised the way we think, behave and learn. It has developed and continues to grow exponentially - and does not appear to be slowing down.

Educating and nurturing the curiosity and creativity of our next generation of pioneers though STEM (STEAM), coding and digital technology is vital for their future success.

Imagine the possibility. They are waiting to change the world.

Working to get qualified The Victorian Fitness Academy (VFA Learning) Narre Warren is a registered training organisation that specialises in vocational training for the fitness and sport, massage therapy and early childhood education industries.

With a purpose-built facility offering flexible learning options, business development manager Jeremy Riley explained that the strong practical component offered by VFA assists individuals in gaining the skills and knowledge required to begin a rewarding career.

Westernport Child Care Centre and Kindergarten marked 20 years of care in 2016.

After some reflection, the directors decided to commemorate this achievement by committing to work towards becoming carbon neutral within the next 10 years.

Catholic ethos guides learning St Thomas the Apostle Primary School is a mixed Catholic school running classes from Pep to Year 6.

The school opened in January 2014 at St Agatha’s Primary School with an enrolment of 125 students and moved to the Cranbourne East site on 21 March 2014.

The staff at St Thomas the Apostle Primary School strive to develop caring and professional relationships with every student at the school so that the children can experience a collaborative learning environment that educates, challenges and engages.

A man from Cranbourne is facing six years behind bars for the fatal stabbing of his brother in a family violence case that brought a Supreme Court judge to tears.

Shane Brown, 33, was sentenced for manslaughter after he stabbed his older brother Wayne Brown in the chest in the kitchen of their family home on Friday 10 June 2016.

During the sentencing hearing on Wednesday 10 May 2017, Judge Michael Croucher was unable to hold back tears as he recounted the circumstances of the horrific crime.

On 10 June 2016 shortly before 7pm, Wayne Brown arrived at the home of his and Shane’s parents on Camms Road in Cranbourne along with his partner Michelle Dawson and their 15-year-old daughter Madison Jagger.

It wasn’t long before Wayne, impaired by drugs and alcohol, became belligerent, abusive and aggressive towards his family members.

The court heard how Madison and Michelle along with the brother’s parents Colin and Iolanda, were threatened with violence and verbally abused by Wayne.

Over the period of about an hour, Madison took refuge from the mayhem unfolding in her grandparent’s house in the room of her uncle Shane, emerging occasionally to defend her mother.

On one of the times she fled to Shane’s bedroom, the court heard she was “bawling her eyes out, pretty scared ... and shaking.”

The situation escalated when every member of the family had asked Wayne to leave the house and Iolanda Brown attempted to call the police to remove her violent son.

Mrs Brown had threatened to call the police to remove Wayne from the house when Wayne snatched the phone from his mother’s hand and called everyone in the house “a pack of dogs.”

It was about this time that Shane had de-

cided his brother “had to be stopped” and if he didn’t take action “no-one was ever going to get him out of the house.”

Shane then took a large ornamental knife from the wall of his bedroom, approached his irate and violent brother and stabbed him once in the left side of the chest.

Shane then left the house on foot after disposing of the bloodied knife in his bedroom wardrobe.

While Colin and Iolanda Brown scrambled to call emergency services and their other child Kelly Brown, Wayne Brown died at the scene.

The court heard that in the day following the incident Shane Brown contemplated taking his own life, but instead turned himself into police, giving a full admission of what had occurred.

Shane Brown offered as guilty plea for manslaughter, but due to the circumstances of the case, Judge Croucher wanted to offer him a lesser sentence.

“To be sure, Shane Brown has committed a serious crime,” he said.

“He killed his brother by use of excessive violence, with a weapon and their family is now devastated in consequence.”

“But, while Shane’s response was wrong and excessive, Wayne had behaved very aggressively and Shane reasonably feared he would do something worse.”

“Thus, it is really a case of what sometimes used to be called excessive self-defence or excessive defence of others.”

Shane Brown was convicted and sentenced to six years and three months imprisonment with a non-parole period of three years and three months.

“I think that an element of mercy is due to Shane Brown because of the circumstances in which he acted and because of the fact that he will have to live forever with the fact that he killed his own brother,” Judge Croucher said.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne local Ian Brandon has continued to inspire and help people despite suffering from an illness that would stop most people in their tracks.

Mr Brandon was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Cranbourne at a special dinner on Tuesday 9 May in recognition of his volunteer and community work.

He said he was very pleased to receive the award and it always amazes him that other people have taken such an interest in his volunteer work.

“It is really humbling,” he said.

“What I do is I get up and try to get through to the end of the day and it’s amazing the way people see me; it’s not how I see myself.”

“I don’t do it for any particular reason and it felt really humbling - when you are in a room full of people doing it for years - it was humbling to be in the room full of people of such community standing.”

Mr Brandon was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) almost 20 years ago but that hasn’t stopped him from working hard to improve other peo-

ple’s lives as well as his own.

He has been attending rehabilitation classes and groups at Casey RACE to improve his quality of life and gives his time and infectious positivity generously for others at the centre.

Mr Brandon is involved with an All Abilities group, My Life group, children and adult rehabilitation groups and more recently has started a program for rehabilitation members attending Casey RACE. Community engagement coordinator at Casey RACE Tori Norris said Mr Brandon has been a constant source of inspiration to the staff and clients of Casey RACE. “Ian is an inspiration to us all,” she said.

“A warm and welcoming soul who always makes it his mission to take the time to brighten the day of all he comes across.”

Rotary president Gerard Sadler said that Ian meets all the criteria of the Rotary moto “Service above Self“ and is a worthy recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow.

It’s not the first time Mr Brandon has had his inspiring nature recognised by the community.

Earlier this year he was nominated for Casey Citizen of the Year at the Casey Council’s Australia Day awards and in 2015 Mr Brandon was named citizen of the year by the Cranbourne Chamber of Commerce.

Mr Brandon, who was unaware of being made a Paul Harris Fellow until the dinner, said he really enjoys what he does and would be doing it even without his MS diagnosis.

“I thought I was going to the Rotary Dinner to give a talk on my community work and the different groups I volunteer with and organise,” he said.

Mr Brandon said it was the people he volunteers with that makes as his hard work worthwhile.

“I go to the pool every day for rehab and I show up and do it, I don’t even think about it and I would do it even if I wasn’t broken.”

“I want to thank everybody involved in what I do,” he said.

“I talk to so many people every day they bring so much to my life; they make my life better and then I make a difference in their life.”

“Each and every one brightens my day so it is definitely a mutually beneficial situation.”

The Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund is being ploughed back into the community, with $2 million announced to upgrade the bus terminal at Cranbourne train station.

State Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera made the announcement on Friday 12 May that the bus interchange would receive four new bus bays with accompanying shelters.

The most recent upgrades to the train station will also see the addition of real time passenger information and safe and secure bicycle facilities.

The funding comes just one month after Shadow Minister for Planning David Davis called on the government to spend more of the money raised through the GAIC fund.

However, the State Government claims to have allocated $11.8 million in funds from GAIC’s Building New Communities Fund, and $22.2 million from the GAIC’s Growth Areas Public

Transport Fund this financial year.

Mr Perera said the population increase in Cranbourne and surrounding areas has swelled GAIC funds, facilitating the government decision to provide much-needed infrastructure.

“Our community is thriving because more and more families are choosing to move here,” he said.

“We’re investing in the services and infrastructure needed to help us grow.”

Minister for Suburban Development Lily D’Ambrosio said building developers owe it to the community to put money back into public transport and infrastructure for everyone.

“These are exactly the types of projects that GAIC was introduced to fund.

It’s all about developers giving back to the community they’re building,” she said.

“We don’t just want our growing suburbs to become bigger - we want them to be healthier, fairer and safer too.”

By Victoria Stone-Meadows City of Casey Council is reconsidering a fresh proposal for chaplains in community spaces, despite council officers initially rejecting the proposal in a report presented to council on Tuesday 16 May. Councillor Amanda Stapledon presented an alternative recommendation at the council meeting on Tuesday night that will see council again meeting with chaplain service provider Korus Connect.

The original recommendation from council officers in the report suggested council not undertake the planned chaplaincy program through their youth and children services program.

“The extensive range of support already provided by council and the expertise of council staff officers do not support the introduction of chaplaincy services into council’s child and youth programs,” council officers noted in their report.

The recommendation also suggested that council refers residents seeking chaplaincy services from

the City of Casey directly to Korus Connect.

However, Cr Stapledon suggested instead that council members, officers and interested community groups have a second meeting with Korus Connect to “outline a broader initiative and funding model.”

Cr Stapledon said the introduction of chaplains into community spaces and groups would be a worthwhile initiative for council to investigate funding avenues for.

“A chaplain is really well placed in community groups and part of the community,” she said.

“We can look at a number of interested community groups to jointly fund this instead of the ratepayer, and I would like to do more work on this.”

The new alternative recommendation was passed by council without dissent.

The proposal for council to fund and place chaplains in community spaces such as sports groups and shipping centres was first raised at a council meeting in December 2016.

After meeting with Korus Con-

nect in January this year, it was revealed that employing chaplains in community spaces would cost council up to $71,525 per chaplain annually.

At the council meeting, Cr Stapledon said she would also like to see a chaplain employed by council for council staff, and to change the title of the role to avoid polarised views in the community.

“There is an alternative name of ‘community support officer’ and I think we should use that name in order to be consistent with other groups,” she said.

“They are not there to preach; they are there to help people, and they know the right people to refer onto, so a chaplain can be a great confidant.”

Cr Stapledon did not highlight which community groups in the municipality had expressed interest in being a part of the program; she did say Westfield Fountain Gate had shown enthusiasm for the program.

Westfield Fountain Gate were contacted for comment, but did not respond by deadline.

Councillor Wayne Smith lent his support to Cr Stapledon’s alternative recommendation and spoke of his positive experience dealing with chaplains in his work as a bail justice and through his own schooling.

Ousted Casey City Councillor Steve Beardon was outspoken in his opposition to the chaplaincy program during his time on council and has again lashed out against the proposal.

“All too often, chaplains are reflective of thinking stuck in the pastthe type of thinking isolated to rightwing bible-belt preachers, spruiking harsh rules outdated and unwanted today,” he said.

“Casey needs to recognise all faiths through Casey Multifaith network, not ride roughshod over these committees established to advise on these issues.”

“I was part of the council who set up Casey Multifaith Network in 2006 specifically to separate councillors from religious interference and to establish the network as the primary advisory committee on these issues, and I suggest councillors do that in future.”

Khan’s Hospitality is providing the Cranbourne Food Truck with a prepared meal to serve from the truck on a weekly basis.

Khan’s Hospitality Services owner Adam Sadiqzai said the business providing food for the most vulnerable in the Cranbourne community is part of his business ethos.

“I first became aware of the food truck through local media and it sparked interest,” Mr Sadiqzai said.

“I liked they were helping the local community, particularly in Cranbourne, which is an area that really needs a bit of help and support.”

“It fits in with my business philosophy of having business with a purpose and we have been doing things like this for a long time, helping a lot of groups in Casey and Cardinia.”

Khan’s cooks meals for the food truck using fresh ingredients that than get be given to those in the community looking for a hot meal and place to go.

The Cranbourne Food Truck’s client base has grown over the last few months where they attract between 250 and 300 people a month.

Armed robber strikes A man was stabbed during an armed robbery on Scarborough Avenue in Cranbourne West one the night of Thursday 4 May. Emergency services were called to the scene at about 8.15pm, where the man was found with non-life-threatening injuries.

It is believed the man was assaulted and stabbed while walking his dog and had his wallet stolen.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A health warning has been issued over an increase in cases of Legionnaires’ disease that is believed to have originated at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre.

The warning has been issued to health professionals and general practitioners to keep an eye out for the symptoms and not as a warning to the general public.

There have been four cases of Legionnaires’ disease detected in the area surrounding the Cranbourne Shopping Centre since February.

A number of cooling towers around the shopping centre have been tested for the Legionella bacteria but none have returned positive results to date.

There have been 47 cases of Legionella infection across Victoria in 2017 so far - compared to 28 cases for the same period in 2016.

People aged over 50, smokers, heavy drinkers, people with diabetes or chronic lung disease and those with an impaired immune system are most at risk from contracting the illness.

Anyone who suspects they may have contacted any atypical illness should contact their doctor.

Here’s cheers to our top helpers

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Five individuals and three community groups have had their hard work recognised at the 2017 City of Casey Volunteer Awards on Friday 12 May. Roman Nowak from Cannons Creek took out the coveted Casey individual volunteer of the year award for the many and varied volunteer roles he undertakes in the municipality.

Mr Nowak, 65, is an independent person with the Youth Referral Program who helps young people who have been taken into police custody when a parent or guardian may not be available.

He has attended 69 call outs to police stations throughout Casey to support young, vulnerable people who otherwise may have had nobody.

Mr Nowak is also second in charge of the Cranbourne Salvation Army where he has volunteered for 22 years and co-ordinates relief efforts to help the most vulnerable members of the community.

His volunteer efforts extend into other areas as well; having been a member of the Devon Meadows CFA for almost 20 years, a member of Langwarrin Landcare and a town support worker helping people with tasks such as budgeting in the local area.

“I am very privileged to have received this award because there a lot of people who do voluntary work that never get recognised and they should be recognised.”

for an award on the night.

“I believe that the volunteers we have in Casey are some of the best, and I would like to congratulate all the nominees and winners on being recognised for their invaluable contribution to the City of Casey,” he said.

“It gives me great pleasure to acknowledge your generosity in giving your time and effort for the benefit of others to make our community such a great place to live,” Cr Aziz said.

17-year-old Hayley Stevens from Officer was awarded the Casey young volunteer of the year award for organising a team of students from her school to participate in the Casey Relay for Life event in March this year.

Cranbourne residents Debbie Medley and Maureen Fowler were presented with the Casey Volunteering Pair Award for their work in delivering the KC Dog Education Program for Neighbourhood Watch Casey.

Helen and Richard Crago from Devon Meadows received a commendation for their volunteer work with the Cranbourne Library.

Community groups from the area that had their work recognised include the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church Food Truck, Backpacks 4 VIC Kids and the Casey Youth Action Committee.

Libraries plan a bright future

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) will be undergoing a drastic change in the next four years if the 2017-'21 Library Plan is approved by the community.

CCL will officially unveil the draft plan at Pakenham library on Wednesday 17 May with CCL chairwoman Cardinia councillor Jodie Owen.

The draft plan details the libraries' ambitions in upgrading IT equipment, renewing the furniture and refreshing the feel of libraries, and creating new and better learning and activity spaces.

CCL CEO Chris Buckingham said that the much-needed upgrades to the libraries will bring them into the 21st century.

“We have a clear mission to encourage lifelong learning, increase literacy and build strong resilient communities across the Casey Cardinia region,” he said.

“We want our libraries to be places where people can share stories, gather knowledge and be creative.”

“All our surveys told us that the community love our libraries, but we have a lot of work to do to ensure that they meet the needs of a rapidly growing community.”

The Library Plan is available on www.cclc. vic.gov.au and physical copies are on display in all CCL branches.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome from the community up to 14 June.

No leak on Brookland gas costs technical experts who had provided advice.

Residents collected up to $130,000 from the settlement, seeking damages after gas from the adjoining closed tip was detected in the estate in 2008.

In the subsequent emergency incident, alarmed residents were evacuated from their homes.

Nine homes are still monitored inside by methane-detection monitors that were installed in September 2008.

According to a council report, the landfill post-monitoring will largely continue at the same levels as 2010 though the in-home monitoring exercise was considered “redundant”.

A contract with Run Energy for in-home monitoring would continue on a month-by-month basis.

The landfill post-closure monitoring and groundwater testing contracts with Run Energy and Ecowise Australia will run for three years, followed by three options of one year.

The council also agreed to wind down its professional indemnity insurance coverage of Run Energy from $20 million to $10,000.

According to the council report, this will save $87,525 over the next three years.

People power gets them places

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Students at Tooradin Primary School have taken out the top prize in round three of the Victorian Human Powered Vehicle series.

Teams from primary and secondary students from around the state converged in Knox where they raced in their modified vehicles for six hours.

Tooradin Primary entered two teams into the race - The Red Rocket and the Flamin’ Mozzies - with each team made up of eight boys and eight girls from the school.

The Red Rocket team took out first place in the Junior Secondary category, winning by a convincing 10 laps ahead of the competition.

The Flamin’ Mozzies team also placed well with the group ending the race in fifth place.

“For many of our students this was a challenging course as half the race was up hill and the other half they had to concentrate on controlling their speed and vehicle on the demanding downhill stretch,” Tooradin Primary wellbeing coordinator Rachel Davis said.

“Our students excelled at supporting and encouraging each other to overcome the challenges and experience an amazing sense of courage and pride in themselves.”

The school will continue their training and teamwork while working towards the series championships at Casey Fields in October.

“Thank you to all our generous sponsors who contributed to our program and assist in our students continued development of health, fitness and teamwork,” Ms Davis said.

Casey Council is tight-lipped on the ongoing cost of managing a Cranbourne former landfill nearly a decade after high levels of methane leaked into homes at Brookland Greens estate.

On 16 May, the council approved tenders for the continued post-management of its Stevensons Road landfill for at least another three years.

The contract costs were kept secret under commercial-in-confidence provisions.

Following the decision, a Casey spokesman declined to give a global figure of the debacle’s cost, including the legal settlement, an extensive three-year landfill gas soil clean-up and ongoing monitoring.

The spokesman said a figure was unable to be released due to commercial-in-confidence contracts and funding coming from government sources.

The council and the Environment Protection Authority Victoria settled a $23.5 million class action with more than 750 residents in Brookland Greens in 2011.

At the time, the council expressed confidence it would recover much of its $13.5 million contribution from nine other defendants, including the landfill’s managers and

As a leader in providing sector-wide professional development on topics such as trauma, Kinders Together also welcomes the additional investment in coaching, training and mentoring for educators in the State Budget.

However, there is no use in greatly improving the supports and interventions available at kindergarten if access to kindergarten for all children regardless of background is not maintained.

What use are excellent kindergarten facilities, educators and support services if the number of kindergarten hours is reduced.

The Victorian State Government has done their bit in committing to ensuring a strong future for our children and families over the long-term, it is time the Federal Government did the same.

In the 2017 Federal Budget, the National Partnership Agreement on Universal Access to Early Childhood Education (NPA) has only been extended for another 12 months.

The lack of certainty and stability over ongoing funding for the sector will continue unless a long-term commitment is made regarding this.

The Victorian State Government has committed to providing long-term ongoing funding for the kindergarten sector to improve infrastructure, support and raise the capacity of workers in the sector which will benefit all children once they are at kindergarten, but much of the positive impacts of this will be undermined if there is reduced access/hours to kindergarten.

The Federal Government needs to step up and commit to long-term funding under the NPA. The announcement of the 2017 Victorian State Budget is a welcome acknowledgement of the importance of early childhood education and care to not just children but also their wider communities.

However, this is only a starting point, so much more needs to be done before we can claim we are a so-called ‘Education State’ and the Commonwealth has a role to play in this as well.

The announcement of in the 2017 Federal Budget of the extension of the NPA for another year is welcome, but not good enough, a longer-term commitment is required.

Furthermore, 15 hours of funded kindergarten in the year before commence school is only the bare minimum, many countries provide substantially more hours and for more years prior to the commencement of school.

To really be seen as an ‘Education State’ we need to be leading the way with this, to truly be seen as an innovative and agile nation we need to secure greater kindergarten access for all.

The motorcyclist was airlifted to The Alfred hospital and as of Tuesday 16 May, remained in a critical condition at The Alfred suffering from serious head injuries. Old-fashioned way works Angela and I celebrate our 60th anniversary on 8 June, 2017.

We arrived at Station Pier with our three children on April 2, 1968, from Morecambe in north-west England, and were put on a bus and taken to a migrant hostel in Broadmeadows. We had nothing; only the suitcases we carried and had to start again from scratch at the hostel.

I got told to visit the employment office in Glenroy for a job interview (I am still waiting) and after only four days I got a job in a stone quarry in Epping. It was very long hours, six days a week and six hours on a Sunday doing maintenance on the camp. I only got one meal a week because the canteen was closed when I went to work and closed when I got back.

We stayed on the camp for nine months and then we got out and rented a house. In March 1974 we moved to Hampton park and still live in the house 43 years now. In February 1997 I had to retire from work due to a work injury that never got treated and later had to have a hip replacement so that was the end of my working days at the age of 61.

I am proud to say my wife and I never got any handouts from anybody. We both worked hard for what we own.

We have five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren spread out around the country.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Federal Health Minister and Flinders MP Greg Hunt paid a visit to Berwick on Monday 15 May where a 12-month trial of the government’s new opt-in Health Care Home program is set to begin.

Mr Hunt visited the Casey Superclinic in Berwick with La Trobe MP Jason Wood to announce that the clinic will be one of the first 20 of 200 clinics across the country to trial the new program.

Along with Emerald Medical Centre, the Casey Superclinic will be a trial for the new system of care from October.

The remaining 180 clinics that will run the trial will be offering comprehensive health care co-ordination from 1 December.

The program aims to ensure patients suffering from long-term chronic illnesses have a comprehensive and cohesive access to ongoing consolidated healthcare.

The trial will see doctors, nurses and community health care providers working together under a shared care plan that will give the patient a complete overview of their treatments and needs.

The drive behind the initiative will see local clinics and medical centres transformed into ‘home bases’ that will co-ordinate the care and needs of patients with ongoing needs.

A Health Care Home clinic will receive a monthly bundled payment to the clinic to allow flexibility in the type of treatment patients with chronic illnesses need on a changing basis while still allowing patients to access Medicare coverage for treatments outside their plan.

Police draw the line at this felon A search warrant on a Cranbourne property has allegedly uncovered drugs, weapons ... and a near three-metre-long carpet python.

The Dandenong Divisional Response Unit executed a search warrant on the morning of Tuesday 9 May in Clarendon Street, Cranbourne.

Police said they seized methyl amphetamines, prohibited weapons, and stolen property from the premises but called in special help to remove the large snake.

The wildlife resource and protection and management team from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning were responsible for removing the reptile.

A 28-year-old man from Cranbourne has been interviewed by police and has been released pending further inquiries.

“Patients of GP clinics in Berwick and Emerald will be eligible to take part in the program which will see their GP develop a plan which co-ordinates support from other medical specialists and nurses,” he said.

Health Minister Mr Hunt said the program will reduce the overall cost

of healthcare to the government by improving patient outcomes over the long term.

“This trial is an Australian first and although I will be guided by our GPs and those patients taking part, I am hopeful that the program is a success and we will continue to roll it out,” he said.

The Health Care Home Program will be funded by a $110 million commitment by the government in the 2017-18 Federal Budget.

Other medical centres and clinics in the south-east region that will be part of the wider trial beginning in December include The Chandler Road Medical Clinic in Noble Park, Hallam Family Practice, Lakeside Square Medical Centre in Pakenham, Lynbrook Village Medical Centre, Thompson Road Clinic in Cranbourne and the Hampton Park branch of the first Health Medical Centre.

Bro, that’s some honour

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Clyde North resident Sam Grant has been awarded the highest volunteer honour available to Camp Quality volunteers after four and half years helping children with cancer.

Mr Grant has received the Victorian Dick Gillard award for his tireless efforts in improving the life of children suffering from cancer.

Mr Grant became involved with Camp Quality after he took an early retirement package and wanted to help out people who needed some extra care.

“I took an early retirement package and I’m not a good golfer and I thought I had seen something on the TV about Camp Quality,” he said.

“I wanted to put something back into the community again and the bond between volunteers is amazing; everyone is a winner, the volunteers are great, the kids are great, the families are great.”

He said the unfiltered joy children express when they have a chance to forget about their illness is what keeps him going with his volunteer duties.

“It has become a real passion seeing the joy and fun upon kid’s faces when we go away or at the family camps,” he said.

“I’ve been lucky enough to never experience the fear of possibly losing a child so to take families and allow them to interact with each and the appreciation of what Camp Quality does.”

Fund-raising specialist for Camp Quality Victorian Jo McKeown said no-one was more deserving of the award than Mr Grant.

“From being an amazing companion, who does incredible work with kids on camps, to bringing a shining light into the office, Sam is an all-round brilliant person who celebrates life and appreciates every moment,” she said.

Mr Grant is also getting behind Camp Quality’s push for more male volunteers through their “Time to Bro Up” campaign.

The campaign aims to encourage more

men into volunteer roles after recent data showed that while over 50 per cent of kids impacted by cancer are boys, less than 30 per cent of Camp Quality volunteers are men.

Mr Grant said he understands the hesitation a lot of men have when it comes to volunteering, especially with kids.

“It’s was one of my initial fears; the stigma of a 63-year-old man wanting to work with kids but Camp Quality put you at ease with this,” he said.

“They have strict child protection protocols and that puts you at ease with no fear of people being suspicious of you.”

“I would encourage anyone to give it a go; it’s an experience like no other.”

Camp Quality CEO Kylea Tink said there is not time like the present for men all over Australia to consider joining the Camp Quality team.

“Every child attending a Camp Quality camp has a companion of the same gender as a mentor, much like a big brother or sister, to ensure they are supported to have the best time ever,” she said.

“With boys being diagnosed at a higher rate than girls, and male volunteer numbers so low, our fear is that our boy campers will soon start missing out on this life-changing opportunity.”

Salvos welcome knockers for annual Red Shield Appeal

The Salvation Army in Cranbourne is getting behind the 2017 Red Shield Appeal in an effort to raise money to combat poverty.

The Salvation Army needs to mobilise more than 60,000 volunteers across Australia on the weekend of 27 and 28 May with an aim of raising $8 million for the appeal.

The appeal allows the Salvos to provide help to the most vulnerable members of the community during Christmas, which can be a desperate and lonely time for many people.

The Cranbourne branch is urging local people to get on board and lend a hand fund-rais-

ing, door knocking and donating to the cause.

Cranbourne's Major Vanessa Evans said the Red Shield Appeal is the perfect time for members of the community to let their generosity shine through.

“We help lots of homeless people in the area and other as well,” she said.

“There is a wide variety of people we help and we always need more volunteers to help on the day; that would be great.”

“We need people to help out walking and door knocking, in shopping centres and intersections, anyone who is able to give few hours, we would be so grateful for.”

Army helps out about 100 families a week with that increase to over 250 families a week over the Christmas period.

“If people can give we would really appraise it,” Major Evans said.

“It really does help in the community and goes straight to the least advantaged members and comes back to our roots of helping those most in need.”

On Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May the Salvos will be out in local communities collecting donations for the Red Shield Appeal.

Time for tough love Great businesses are forged during tough times.

That’s the opinion of Star News Group Business Excellence Seminar guest speaker and national business commentator Damian Morgan.

Mr Morgan will exchange ideas with some of Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong business leaders during a series of free seminars he will be holding across the region in June.

While he has a positive attitude to business success during economic slumps, Mr Morgan isn’t afraid to be blunt when giving advice.

“The truth is there are some boom-time businesses that will only work in a boom,” he said.

“Great businesses that are well planned and developed are sustainable - they can thrive in any conditions.”

Mr Morgan is a former creative writer and busi-

ness journalist with an MBA, and is also a regular media commentator.

He has a passion for helping small and medium-sized businesses grow.

“I am a small business owner myself,” he said.

“My great passion is helping small businesses beat corporate - we are generally better.”

One pitfall for many small business owners was a lack of self-promotion, Mr Morgan said.

“So many small businesses are very good at what they do, but they don’t make the profit they should make because, in many cases, they don’t promote themselves well,” he said.

“It’s one of the things corporate (businesses) do really well. Small businesses are typically better.

We care more but we are often the best kept secrets in town.”

Ayden Horyna was named Roof Tiling and Slating Apprentice of the Year at the awards ceremony at Etihad Stadium in Docklands on Friday 12 May. As part of being awarded the title, Mr Horyna also received almost $2000 with of tools, vouchers and workwear.

Mr Horyna was one of 12 apprentices from across the state to receive an award and be named the best apprentice in their field of work and study.

Master Builders Association of Victoria president Melanie Fasham said all apprentices were a valuable asset to the country and deserved to have their achievements recognised.

“One of the best investments Victoria can make is in the training and skills of young people in the building and construction industry,” she said.

“When we prepare them, we prepare Victoria for the generations ahead and the communities that will rely on them.”

“Tonight’s group of award recipients reflect the continuing importance of apprenticeships as the critical and enduring pathway for skills in the Victorian building industry.”

The awards ceremony was attended by about 1000 people and saw the best and brightest of Victoria’s future tradespeople honoured for their hard work.

Master Builders CEO Radley de Silva said all the winners faced tough competition and the talent of young apprentices shone brighter every year.

“It’s edifying to see this pool of building talent among our Victorian apprentices every year,” he said.

“Ours is the fastest-growing state, and these are the builders who will serve our communities in the years to come. The challenge, as always, is selecting just one winner.”

A Berwick baker has risen to the top of Coles’ apprentice bakers in Australia.

Jackson Taylor won the category as well as $1000 in the supermarket’s inaugural bakery awards after starting the apprentice program in January.

He and other finalists had a cook-off across a range of sweet and savoury foods - as well as serving up their own unique treat.

The creations were judged on appearance, texture, aroma and taste.

Jackson cooked up a lamington jam scroll based on it being a big hit with his colleagues at Coles Parkhill Junction store.

“I began the apprenticeship earlier this year because I’m a hands-on person and have enjoyed working in the bakery and learning from the other bakers,” he said.

“It was a great feeling to be nominated and to be named a finalist shows that I’m on the right track in the early stages of my apprenticeship.”

Store manager David Visser praised Jackson’s teamwork and passion for his craft.

“The wacky lamington scrolls were a team favourite and we’re all so excited for him.”

Meanwhile, Samantha Shores, of the Casey Central store, was recognised as Coles’ best trade qualified baker in the state.

She cooked up a Nutella pull-apart during the finals.

‘Molto bene’ for 20 years

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Cranbourne Italian Senior Citizens Club celebrated 20 years of events, memories and keeping the Italian heritage of the region alive.

Every week the group comes together to celebrate their Italian roots, share delicious food, and dance the day away.

The Cranbourne Italian Senior Citizens club have been a major part

of the Cranbourne community for 20 years, offering a space for themselves since 1997.

Now with over 200 members, the club enjoys boisterous get-togethers as well as organised outings and trips.

Their anniversary was a special day for all involved with food and dance on offer for everyone, and will continue the fun and festivies for many years to come.

Storytime

Myuna Farm in Doveton hosts a produce swap where residents can swap their excess homegrown produce with other participants. Produce swaps are not only for swapping homegrown fruit and vegetables, but participants can also bring along items including eggs, seeds and seedlings, flowers and compost.

There is no money exchanged, just items swapped. New participants are welcome and no bookings are required.

Golfing girls’ historic win

By Nick Creely Haileybury College’s historic female golf team has won its very first APS/AGSV Golf Championship.

On Monday 1 May at Spring Valley Golf Club in Clayton South, the team of four, which comprised of golfers from the Berwick and Brighton campuses, competed in an all-male field and achieved glory - an extraordinary achievement that has never been seen before.

With 18 different colleges from around the Melbourne area competing, including renowned schools such as St Kevin’s, Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar, Haileybury shone brightest in the team with the only female representation.

Berwick Year 12 student Alexandra Hilliard, the co-captain of the team, was brilliant with an individual score of just 69 - the best result of any individual player in the tournament - as Haileybury scored just 214, eight ahead of Yarra Valley Grammar on 222.

Aside from Hilliard, who has aspirations to become a professional golfer, Gabriela Ruffels (Year 12, Brighton), Alizza Hetherington (Year 12, Brighton) and Zara Woodbridge (Year 11, Brighton) all contributed with stunning individ-

ual scores in the range of 70-80.

Head of Golf at Haileybury, Chris Bamford, was ecstatic for the girls and for what it means for his school. “(I’m) extremely proud - could not be prouder - it's an absolute pleasure to be around them as their enthusiasm and love for the game of golf is infectious,” he said.

“They all have ambitions to become professional golfers, and several of them will have scholarship offers to play at the US college level in coming years.

“They truly are wonderful ambassadors for Haileybury and for girls’ golf. They are fantastic role models for our younger golfers.”

The achievement is sure to go down in Haileybury folklore, as usually in school sports, males and females compete separately.

“This is a ground-breaking result for two reasons - firstly, it is the first time an all-girls team has represented Haileybury - or any school - in the APS/AGSV Golf Championships - needless to say, it is the first time an all-girls team has beaten the boys at this level,” he said.

End of an era as interleague campaigner Jock bows out

By David Nagel For lovers of interleague football - it was a day that tugged at the heart strings.

And it was all for very good reason with an interleague legend, South East Football Netball League coach, Michael ‘Jock’ Holland, standing down after SEFNL’s 18-point loss to Hampden at Casey Fields.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Demons, but more importantly it ended a grand association between Holland and the only man who comes close to having the same dose of the interleague bug, Narre Warren champion Michael Collins.

We’ve lost count of Jock’s interleague campaigns, while Collo was saddling up for his ninth representative journey of the last 12 years. Collo played in Jock’s last interleague game as a player in 2006.

Both, well they were at their brilliant best on the weekend.

Holland used Collins as a key plank of his inspiring pre-game speech.

“There have been 80 players that have represented this league in the last five years,” Holland told his players.

“Some have come back, some are playing their first game, and some blokes are doing it for the ninth time.

I asked Collo before why he continues to put his hand up ... he said he loves the challenge of it ... he loves the challenge.

“You are going to be challenged today boys, but the important thing is, individually, a lot of your stories are starting today. Bowdy (Jake Bowd) for his first game, Squiz (Sam Blackwood) as well.

I’ve been lucky enough to follow the dreams I had of playing interleague footy, junior and senior, and then to be involved as a coach has probably surpassed even my expectations,” he said.

“To pass on my experiences, my passion, and hopefully my knowledge, with the support of the coaching team and blokes like Collo, Holty (Marc

Holt), Brandon Osborne, Troy McDermott and Quirky (Dylan Quirk), blokes who have really shown the way, it’s been fantastic. I just hope this next batch of kids do the same.

“If I can leave a legacy it’s just to be passionate about interleague footy, commit, it’s not for everyone, but those who do commit will get great reward and make some great mates along the way.”

Holland’s passion has definitely rubbed off with Osborne - this year’s captain - explaining after the match why interleague has enhanced his football experience.

“Jock’s a great bloke, really passionate, and it’s been a pleasure to play under him for the last five years,” Osborne explained.

“It’s been great and it’s probably brought me out of my shell. Blokes like B (Daniel Battaglin), it feels like home playing with him each year and you build that mateship that you don’t have with other players that you play against.

“It’s like an extended group of mates, I love it. A week off would be nice but interleague footy is a real challenge and that’s how footy should be. We should be in the top 10. I said to the boys before the third quarter that we should be proud to have this jumper on and proud to represent the league.”

Osborne said whoever the next coach may be will have his full support.

“Yeah, it will be interesting to see who the coach is. Hopefully a few more of the boys put their hand up and we get a really strong side and we get back on the winners list.”

’Rays over-run as Chargers hit

By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - ROUND 7 A slicker, more experienced Oakleigh Chargers outfit has given Dandenong an almighty football lesson, belting the Stingrays by 89-points at Shepley Oval on Sunday.

In what has been a truly testing month for the Stingrays, with losses to Northern Knights and Sandringham Dragons, the writing was on the wall early when the Chargers kicked two early goals, before Mason De Wit missed two gettable set shots for the Rays in a matter of minutes.

The intensity around the ball was fierce, but the Chargers adapted to the style of game quicker, taking a 24-point lead into quarter time.

That comfortable lead grew legs in the second quarter, with the Rays looking lethargic around the stoppages, and despite some impressive work in the ruck from Bailey Williams, who possesses arguably the most athletic leap in the competition; the Chargers ran them ragged to take a 43-point lead into half time.

Some desperation crept into the Stingrays’ game after half time, with a response needed to stay in touch, but poor kicking at goal plagued their efforts, and despite a lift in intensity through Mitch Cotter and Hunter Clark in the middle, Bailey Williams switching from ruck to forward, the lead grew in stature to an ominous 57-points.

It became party time for the Chargers in the final term, banging through 7.3 to 2.1 to almost bring the final margin into triple figures.

Stingrays coach Craig Black was disappointed with his side’s ability to control the football despite having plenty of chances, believing they wasted many opportunities.

“Our intent to win the footy and keep it wasn’t great - we probably over possessed the footy a little bit and handballed to get out of trouble rather than create - we missed a couple of opportunities at goal in the first quarter and scoreboard pressure is pretty important,” he said.

“It’s a bit of a hiccup, or roadblock at the moment - there’s plenty of teams around the country getting beaten badly, what’s important is our response. We had a good chat after the game, and the players are keen to get to training and improve on the aspects that let them down on the weekend.”

Despite the one sided scoreboard, there were positives to take out of the game - rising ruckman Bailey Williams kicked four out of five goals, Hunter Clark is building into a strong 2017 and Angus Paterson is becoming a revelation down back.

“At half time we challenged the group just to respond and I thought the third quarter - apart from the scoreboard - we actually won a lot of areas in our effort and intensity,” Black said.

“Bailey Williams managed to kick four goals, and (Toby) Bedford was great with his forward line pressure, and Hunter Clark was once again really good, there were some positives for sure.

“We’ve played 41 players this year, but we think that’s a positive sign because it gives kids an opportunity - we just have to keep working on our ball use and our skills like any other Under 18 kid - it’s a long season, finals are still a long time away, and I believe we’re on the right path.”

The Rays have the perfect opportunity to bounce back when they face Eastern Ranges at Shepley Oval on Saturday.

VICTORIAN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 2 Despite sitting 0-2 after two heavy losses to start the season, there are certainly no panic stations just yet for Cranbourne.

Going down by 77-points to a star-studded Diamond Creek at Plenty War Memorial Park on Sunday, Coach Sein Clearihan is upbeat about how his side is travelling, despite its position on the ladder (ninth).

“We got a lot of positives out of it - the scoreboard didn’t really reflect the way we actually played,” he said.

“They’re a great side (Diamond Creek) - they had about 16 AFL players playing for them - I was pleased with the way we went about it and our attack on the ball. We are a hell of a lot better than what we were last week.

“Diamond Creek were just too slick with their hands.”

In the clash in front of a strong crowd, the Eagles were competitive early but fell away after half time, kicking 1.1 to 6.9.

Clearihan, however, believes that the Eagles are still a few weeks off from the rest of the competition.

“The next couple of weeks we just need to grind it out, and in Round 5 or 6 we will start hitting our straps,” he said.

“There are about 12 new girls in that side, and they’ve only played about eight quarters of footy together - we are head-

For the Eagles, Alicia Johnson was impressive in her first game of the season, while Marlee Tatham and Breann Moody played impressive roles and are building into the season.

Star forward Chloe Molloy (six goals) was the destroyer, causing constant headaches for the Eagles’ backline.

The Demons looked outclassed at times, but rode brilliant performances from Michael Collins in the midfield, Michael Riseley down back, and a virtuoso five-goal effort from Andrew Dean to take a well-earned nine-point lead into three quarter time.

But Hampden packed too many punches in the final term, the Demons feeling the effects of limited interchange rotations after the loss of gut-runner Lucas Jellyman-Turner and under-sized ruckman Troy Tharle.

at the helm, praised his boys for a gutsy backs-against-the-wall performance.

“Definitely proud,” Holland began.

“I said at three quarter time, to the boys and the coaching staff, that it was going to be a big ask with two blokes down. It felt like they had control of the game, apart from the third quarter and the first 10 minutes of the match, and they were probably that little bit cleaner and smarter with their ball use.

I was really proud of the group, it was a lot different, a lot younger, and physically they were a lot stronger than us.”

The Demons, they jumped out of the blocks like a shot out of a gun in the first term. Dean set the scene with a fine finish from long range before Jake Smith capitalised on a nervous Hampden defence to stroll in for a second.

And when Beaconsfield youngster Jake Bowd worked his way down from defence, weaved his way through traffic, and slotted calmly from 50 metres, the Demons were 19 points clear after eight minutes!

But Hampden kept calm heads with former AFL listed players in Tim McIntyre (Adelaide), Rory Taggert (Melbourne) and Josh Saunders (St Kilda) lifting a gear to give the visitors a twopoint lead at the first change.

Collins had eight possessions in the opening quarter, Riseley seven in defence, while Narre Warren pair Trent Cody and Jack Soroczynski were damaging by hand.

Riseley is a smart-looking and smooth-moving performer, but his desperation, particularly with his smothering, kept SEFNL in the hunt in the opening exchanges.

Riseley, Jellyman-Turner, Michael Wallace and Jake Richardson would all throw their bodies across opposition boots over the course of the day.

Holland moved Luke McKenna to the dangerous Sandy Robinson at quarter time and in conjunction with skipper Brandon Osborne, Daniel Battaglin and Pakenham first-gamer Sam Blackwood, the defence lifted to Riseley’s elite first-quarter standard.

Nick Battle, Dylan Quirk and Nick Lang all got busy through both midfield, while Matty Clarke, Troy McDermott and Shaun Marusic were mobile targets up front.

Collins had a remarkable 10 kicks in the second term.

Dean kicked two and Marusic one for the quarter, the Demons facing a seven-point deficit at half time.

Bowd recovered but would have just four more possessions for the match while Tharle would sit on the sidelines from the 12-minute mark of the third term.

The Demons led by eight points at the final break.

“It’s simply going to be about effort now isn’t it,” Holland said at a packed three-quarter-time huddle.

“Are we the side that is willing to dig that little bit extra, because that’s what will win us the game. Two contests, Bowdy, you set the scene in that third quarter, that was brave, same with big Tharle, they led from the front, now I’m asking you guys to lead from the front.

“Be bold, be brave, because it’s going to take a brave effort. You’ve got the licence to play exciting footy. It

The Bottle Greens’ height advantage was nullified as McDermott, Smith and Clarke kicked majors, while Dean continued his stellar form, kicking two for the quarter.

Soroczynski’s run was carving up the opposition while the Narre Warren midfield of Richardson, Cody, Quirk and Collins gave the Demons a stack of drive at the stoppages.

Two big hits highlighted the third term and would prove crucial as the second half unfolded.

Unfortunately for Holland that third-quarter effort told, the Demons running on tired legs with Hampden kicking five goals to one to seal it.

Bryce Rutherford tried hard to lift his rating at the start of the final term, while Lang, Battle and Marusic ran the game out strongly.

The Demons had 85 possessions in the third quarter - a number that dropped to just 56 in the last!

Riseley took 10 marks across half back to thoroughly deserve the VCFL medal for SEFNL, with Collins hot on his hammer with 27 touches until three-quarter time. Cody, Dean and Marusic stood tall, while Bowd and Blackwood showed they could become defensive pillars in the years to come.

But the streak is over - long live the streak!

Cavs’ Raheem stars

By Nick Creely BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW ROUND 8 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN A gritty 91-76 victory over the Eltham Wildcats on Saturday night has seen the Casey Cavaliers jump inside the top four.

The Cavs dominated the first half of the game on their home court before steadying up in the second half due to increased intensity by the Wildcats, with Raheem Lemons (24 points, nine rebounds) putting in an all-round masterclass around the court.

All five starters reached double digits for the Cavs, with Ben Louis (18 points, five assists), Brendan Polk (17 points, 13 rebounds), Brent Hobba (16 points, seven rebounds) and Mitch Chapman (13 points) working brilliantly together.

This weekend will see the Cavs play two games - on Saturday night they host Waverley and the next day they travel to face Ringwood.

DIVISION ONE WOMEN After a tight opening half in which both sides could not be split, the bottom placed Cavs were overrun 74-65 to Whittlesea on Saturday night.

Taking a slender three-point lead entering the final quarter, the Pacers finally found their mojo in a 23-11 final term to climb from the bottom of the ladder.

Despite the best efforts of star player Rachel Borham (21 points, six rebounds), who led the struggling side

admirably, there was not enough contributors for the Cavs.

YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN It was a weekend of thrillers for the Cavs, who won and lost in a potentially season-defining duo of games.

First up it was a trip to Rowville Secondary College to face Keysborough, with the Cavs coming from 12-points down at half time to just pip the Cougars in over time.

Jordan Gooiker (21 points), Thomas Bottrell (19 points, six assists) and Tim O’Donovan (17 points, 13 assists) all lifted late in the game to give the Cavs a crucial victory.

But that momentum could not be carried through in a heart stopping 6263 loss the next day to Mornington.

Both sides started positively, but it was the Cavs who looked the goods, before the Breakers just overtook the home side with a late surge of momentum.

YOUTH LEAGUE TWO WOMEN The ladder-leading Cavs were far too good for Whittlesea at home on Saturday afternoon, scoring a comfortable 68-54 victory.

After enduring a tough opening quarter, in which the Pacers won 15-7, the Cavs got the game up and running, dominating the last three quarters.

An impressive performance by Peta Rhodes (20 points, 6 rebounds) led the Cavs to a solid victory - their eighth win for the season.

Chasemore ‘Bears’ his soul in move to rival

By Nick Creely Only a week after losing Steven Spoljaric to Springvale South, Cranbourne have been dealt another bitter blow, with Matt Chasemore defecting to rivals Berwick on a two-year deal.

After Chasemore told Star News Group last month he was considering heading back to Victorian Premier Cricket with St Kilda, the left-handed Eagles’ premiership player has now decided to link up with the Bears in a major coup that is certain to shake up the competition.

Chasemore, 35, has been one of the great club cricketers produced in the past 15 years, and put together yet another stellar Turf 1 season, scoring 539 at 67.4, while also chiming in with 15 wickets at 24.1 with his medium-pacers.

He will be joined by Jordan Cleland, a highly talented wicket-keeper batsman, who also played for Cranbourne last season and is likely to thrive in his new environment.

It is expected Cleland will take the gloves, freeing up Nathan Pilon to get

back to his devastating best with the bat.

The signing of Chasemore lifts the expectations out of Arch Brown Reserve, who now possess a list glittered with talent, and perhaps the most impressive depth out of any Turf 1 side in the competition.

Perhaps their biggest flaw in the quest of more silverware was a middle-order bat who can play a long innings and occupy the crease, but now they’ve found one who compiles runs like very few in the state. In a team featuring names such as gun skipper Jarrod Goodes, bowling dynamos Jarrod Armitage and James Wilcock, as well as rising bat Darren de Souza and a host of other strong players, the Bears are undoubtedly one of the early premiership favourites.

It is understood that Cranbourne and Chasemore mutually parted ways, with the Eagles looking to build for the future.

At this stage, Cranbourne are without a coach for next season, but are expected to make an announcement in the near future.

Comets no match for Clifton Hill FFV SOCCER WRAP REVIEW - ROUND 7 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH-EAST Casey Comets’ disappointing 2017 season continued on Saturday afternoon, going down 0-3 to FC Clifton Hill at Quarries Park.

In a tight first half in which either side were unable to find the net, it took until the 68th minute for the Hills to break through via some great work by Michael Catalano.

From there the Comets capitulated, with Catalano once again finding the net late and then Phillip Vaiopoulos scoring late.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH-EAST Doveton is now equal top of the South-East ladder after knocking off Beaumaris 3-1 at Waratah Reserve on Saturday.

The impressive Doves were in complete control from the outset when Gethin Jones scored in the 29th minute, and from there piled on two more goals against the fellow top-four side.

Berwick City’s clash with North Caulfield SC was postponed on Saturday night, with the match to be rescheduled at a later date.

STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Two rivals went head-to-head on Saturday afternoon, with Bunyip District

and Pakenham United fighting out an entertaining 0-0 draw.

Despite no team able to make the other pay on the scoreboard, both sides were on their game defensively.

But nothing could separate the two improving outfits, and despite some late attacking forays for both teams, a single goal could not get through either keeper.

In other matches across the league, Lyndale United comfortably knocked off the struggling Drouin Dragons 4-0 at Lyndale Secondary College, Rowville Eagles just pipped Casey Panthers 1-0, the dominant Sandown Lions got over the top of Somerville with ease 5-0, Old Mentonians drew 1-1 with Dandenong Warriors and White Star Dandenong fell 0-3 to Chelsea FC.

VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 5 The Northern Blues have put a five-year losing streak against Casey to bed, belting the struggling Demons by 55-points at Preston City Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Right from the outset, Northern placed the Dees under immense pressure, and with 19 AFLlisted players running around, made the injury-plagued Demons look inadequate.

Only two minutes into the match, AFL-listed midfielder Angus Brayshaw left the field after another head knock - his third concussion in the past year and one that leaves his immediate playing future under a serious cloud.

In what was a tight, tough first term that had plenty of consequences, the Blues completely obliterated the visitors on the outside, running them ragged and controlling the contest through uncontested marking and efficiency going forward.

Much of the same ensued in the second quarter, with the Demons starting to become undisciplined. Dennis Armfield missed a relatively simple set-shot goal, before a mini melee broke out, resulting in a free kick and a resultant goal to the Blues.

The margin was 39-points and the game was slipping away from the Demons’ grasp.

And if any hope of a shock comeback was on the cards, the Blues shut that down quickly, kicking five unanswered goals in 15 minutes to drag the margin to 65-points and beyond reach.

Although the Demons fought the game out hard and actually won the last quarter by 10-points, it was a bitterly disappointing performance that sees them slump to 1-4 and 11th on the VFL ladder.

What will be of most concern for Demons Coach Justin Plapp and his group is the ease in which the Blues worked the ball around the ground with little duress.

Casey-listed player Bailey Fritsch was highly impressive as a marking forward in a rare bright spot for the Dees, kicking three of the team’s six goals, while James Harmes (41 disposals), Alex Neal-Bullen (35 disposals), Jay Kennedy-Harris (25 disposals) and Jack Trengove (22 disposals) fought hard but lacked kicking penetration and support.

For the Blues, ex-Giant Kristan Jaksch put his name up for a senior recall, bagging five goals.

Casey will finally play its second home game of the season when it hosts Port Melbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday night.
