The Southern Downs Regional Council is inviting feedback from the public about a proposal to decommission the public toilets located behind the Warwick Town Hall.

The council’s Acting Director Engineering Services Michael Bell said the toilet block has been the subject of recent vandalism, as well as complaints about its aesthetics, condition and maintenance, and concerns safety.

You can ‘have your say’ on the proposal to decommission the toilet block located behind the Warwick Town Hall by completing the Feedback Form available on the council’s website at www.sdrc. qld.gov.au/living-here/have-your-say.

All feedback must be submitted to the council by 5pm tomorrow, Friday 12 May. Licensed asbestos removalists contracted by council to remove asbestos in the southern and eastern sections of the Warwick Town Hall as well as in rooms beneath the Town Hall, a $60,000 project is continuing.

Support for sheds A special meeting of the RANGE Residents Action Group Southern Downs to discuss the replacement of shelter sheds at the Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park will be held at the Yangan School of Arts tonight, Thursday 11 May, at 7pm.

The shelters were demolished by the council in February due to what the council stated was termite damage causing safety issues.

Councillors at their April meeting accepted an offer by Russell Anstey to provide design services for a replacement shelter for free, and to potentially increase funding in the new 2017/18 budget ‘contingency grants fund’ for the construction, and to “liaise with the Swanfels community and relevant stakeholders as to the next stage” of the project.

So persistent has Mr Bower been in following up with the council over its progress with GrainX that he’s been provided with his own email address to which to direct his inquiries.

“It’s worse when there’s a northerly wind, fortunately it’s been south-easterlies the last couple of weeks.”

GrainX has a silo storage capacity of 8000 tonnes and a shed storage capacity of 12,000 tonnes.

The Free Times sought comment from the council on the status of the legal action against GrainX but a spokeswoman said council could not comment on any current legal action. GrainX management did not return our calls.

Extradited interstate over child sex offences A Southern Downs man was last week extradited to New South Wales to face allegations of historic child sex offences.

The man, a former priest aged in his seventies, consented to the extradition and did not seek release on bail when he appeared in the Warwick Magistrates' Court. The man appeared in the Armidale Local Court last Saturday and was granted bail to re-appear on May 17.Police allege the man is responsible for nine child sex offences from the 1970s.

A police spokesman said the man had been part of an ongoing investigation and a number of people had made complaints to NSW police in recent times.

Paramedic gets 13 years over 50 sex offences A former Queensland Ambulance Service paramedic from Warwick convicted of more than 50 sex offences relating to underage girls was last Friday sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Jason David Brooker, 49, was convicted last week in the Toowoomba Magistrates' Court over the offences he committed over a 10-year period.

The court heard that Brooker manipulated and coaxed 22 separate young girls to exchange sexual photographs with him via social media after he posed as a 14 to 19-year-old in order to make contact with young girls. His youngest victim was just 11 at the time while two others were 12 with others aged up to 15.

Once he had sexual images of the victims, he blackmailed and/or threatened to harm them or their families so that they sent more explicit photographs or met up with him, the court was told.

Judge Deborah Richards chose not to label Brooker a serious violent offender.

He will be eligible to apply for parole in January 2021, six years after he was taken into custody.

Allora residents continue to endure disruption to their daily lives from the GrainX grain-handling facility on Herbert Street despite the Southern Downs Regional Council starting legal action over the company’s alleged non-compliance with conditions of its development approval.

As reported previously in the Free Times - as far back as December last year - dust and noise from loading and unloading of the GrainX silos and noise and safety concerns associated with heavy vehicles have made life unbearable for some in ‘The Best Little Town on the Downs’.

Months on, residents say little has changed.

Many have reported health concerns due to grain dust laced with insecticide covering and entering homes, including rainwater supplies.

Sleep deprivation and property de-valuation are also in the mix, along with plain, old-fashioned stress, with some residents venturing into Warwick on a regular basis simply to get away from the operation for a day’s respite.

Herbert Street residents are the worst-affected but the complaints are by no means confined to that street alone.

At least one worker at the Southern Cross Care Homestead aged facility who lives near GrainX is understood to have quit their nightshift work in recent weeks after being unable to sleep during the day, and elderly residents at the town’s other Southern Cross Care nursing home - just up the road from GrainX at the corner of Herbert and Darling

streets - reportedly are no longer able to enjoy a stint outside in the morning sun.

GrainX typically cranks up its generator around 7am on weekdays and grain trucks roll on and off the site continuously, followed by the deafening noise of tonnes of grain falling into silos.

While GrainX has mercifully stopped operating at weekends it’s little relief for Allora residents.

In a statement released on 16 February 2017, the council announced it had “engaged legal counsel to potentially bring legal action against GrainX to deal with outstanding matters in relation to the operation of the facility, particularly with regard to noise and dust”.

Dust and noise monitoring equipment has been installed at some residences, but the Free Times understands some of the devices are in backyards or under awnings which could reduce their accuracy.

The council is also taking action over alleged non-compliance with landscaping requirements set down in its 2011 approval for GrainX. But residents say they’ve had no further word on progress of the legal action since meeting with council officers and its solicitors to give statements back in March.

Herbert Street’s Neil Bower said the council’s solicitors had advised residents they would see drafts of their statements but Mr Bower is yet to see his.

“There’s been no update on where the legal action over the environmental testing is at,” he said this week.

Drug ARM clinical worker Karyn van Tilburg is on the frontline dealing with ice use in the region.

A critical shortage of drug counsellors in the region is contributing to the social carnage linked with methamphetamine use, the Free Times can reveal.

Warwick has only two qualified counsellors who are struggling against the tide of ‘meth’ or ‘ice’ consumption locally and Stanthorpe has none, forcing the Warwick-based workers to split their time to service the needs of the Granite Belt.

Drug ARM Warwick employs one clinical worker and Warwick Hospital supports a sole Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) worker, who as well as Stanthorpe also services Goondiwindi and Millmerran.

The workers deal on a daily basis with the heart-breaking flow-on effects of ice use, which include domestic and other violence, relationship breakdown, homelessness, financial crisis, crime and children forcibly removed from addicted parents by Child Safety Services.

But with demand for their services growing, there’s only so many users our local drug counsellors can assist in any given week and more support is desperately needed in our region, particularly for those who are actively seeking help.

Karyn van Tilburg has been with Drug ARM Warwick for around six months but has many years of experience in drug and alcohol counselling.

She says while the number of fully-addicted, regular ice users nationally has not significantly increased in recent years - despite that being the public perception - what has changed is that the drug has now infiltrated almost every rural and regional community in Australia.

Karyn’s workload has “easily doubled” during her relatively short time with Drug ARM, which is seeking to recruit a second clinical worker.

“When I was out west in the late 1990s in the Dalby area you did see some evidence of ice use but not a lot, it was more confined to the major cities,” Karyn told the Free Times.

“Today it is absolutely everywhere - that’s been the change.

“We talk about an ice ‘epidemic’ but regular users still only make up around two per cent of the population. I think people think everyone they see on the street is on it.

“It’s not so much the number of users, it’s the spread of the drug to rural and regional communities, even the very small ones that’s the issue.

“We definitely need more qualified workers in this region, we are really struggling.”

On a weekly basis Karyn deals with the crisis situations of those battling to overcome their ice addiction, referring them to psychiatric care, finding them emergency accommodation, liaising with Child Safety, Centrelink, Youth Justice and other agencies and even driving clients to medical appointments herself if they can’t access transport.

She says homelessness across the region related to ice use is “a huge issue” and is “shocking” in Stanthorpe, where all of the cheap rental accommodation is utilised by backpackers.

“People are living in their cars, living in tents and caravan parks, or they’re couch-surfing,” Karyn said.

“One of the biggest problems with ice is relationships break down and people are kicked out of where they are living because they are aggressive and just cannot function at all.

“Just this week I had a mother crying on the phone to me, saying she didn’t want to kick her son out of the house but his aggression and stealing had driven her to that point.

“It’s an evil drug - it just wrecks your life from top to bottom.”

Particularly devastating is seeing children removed from their parents.

“These people do love their children, they want to get them back but the addiction is just so strong,” she says.

Karyn says it’s important for the wider community to understand that ice use - and addiction to any drug - is often the result of “a co-morbid mental health condition, so it’s a chicken and egg situation”.

ice crisis “I have dealt with a lot of people who’ve never been referred to a psychiatrist and their mental health condition has never been properly diagnosed,” she says.

The majority of Karyn’s clients are male and aged between 18 and 35, a group generally more likely to take risky behaviour and thrill-seeking.

She says personality traits, past life experiences and mental health are common triggers for starting to use ice.

Some hope amid the despair Karyn says she is always encouraged by success stories among her clients, especially those who have beaten their addiction and stayed clean.

“I’ve had four big successes so far this year with young men,” she said.

“I often see the improvement after they’ve been referred to a psychiatrist and placed on therapeutic medication and they’ve been able to give up.

“If I get an inkling there’s an underlying mental health issue I’ll refer them for an assessment with a mental health professional.

“A lot of my clients are self-referred, so I know they’re serious about giving up.

“I’m also getting referrals from GPs. “I take a holistic approach and I help them deal with all of the life issues that come with ice - I’m not heavy-handed, you’ll lose them if you take that approach.

“I just give them the options - I make it clear I can only assist them, I can’t cure them.

“I do triage them a bit, if someone has a mental health issue or a child safety issue they become a priority.”

The financial cost of ice use As well as being easily accessed in Warwick and surrounding communities, ice is also relatively cheap compared to some other illicit drugs.

Dealers work on a “point” system, with a “point” of ice generally selling for around $100.

But most regular users will need at least two “points” a day for their required hit - some will

take up to four - frequently turning to theft to fund their use.

Many ice users typically combine the drug with cannabis and alcohol.

What is methamphetamine?

Methamphetamine - also known as ‘meth’ or ‘ice’ is a stimulant drug usually used as a white, bitter-tasting powder or a pill. Crystal methamphetamine is a form of the drug that looks like glass fragments or shiny, bluish-white rocks. It is chemically similar to amphetamine, a drug used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, a sleep disorder.

The purity of the drug has increased in the last two decades, meaning its effects are increased and addiction is more likely.

People can take methamphetamine by inhaling/smoking, swallowing in pill form, snorting and injecting the powder that has been dissolved in water or alcohol.

Because the “high“ from the drug both starts and fades quickly, people often take repeated doses in a “binge and crash“ pattern. In some cases, people take methamphetamine in a form of binging known as a “run,“ giving up food and sleep while continuing to take the drug every few hours for up to several days.

Methamphetamine or ‘ice’ trends across Queensland ...

A Drug ARM Queensland spokeswoman said the percentage of people seen by the service who are seeking treatment for methamphetamine as their primary drug of concern has increased.

“Recently the top three have been - in order - alcohol, cannabis and methamphetamine but in some key areas we are seeing methamphetamines overtake cannabis and alcohol as the primary drug of choice,” the spokeswoman said.

Drug ARM provided the following current data on methamphetamine use in Queensland: According to the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program, methamphetamine is the highest consumed illicit drug tested across all regions in Australia;

hospital admissions increased from 3.9 to 52.8 per 100,000 persons; One in three children who go into the care of Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services had a parent who had used methamphetamine at least once, mostly within the last 12 months prior to the child going into care; Nine per cent of young people under a supervised youth justice order are misusing methamphetamine either on its own or with other drugs; There has been a 31 per cent increase in Queensland in arrests for methamphetaminerelated offences from 2014-’15 to 2015-’16; and Some 51 per cent of Queensland’s organised crime networks are linked with ice.

Navy’s top brass Casey’s tips

The Stanthorpe commemorations for the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea were honoured with visits from two Australian admirals and a United States consulate counsellor.

The Naval Wall of Remembrance was unveiled by Deputy Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Michael Noonan. Local children were included in the first flag-raising at the memorial as a symbol of handing our history to the next generation.

In introducing the children, NAA Qld Executive Ross Wiseman said our history “becomes their history for them to carry forward as part of their lives.”

At the celebration dinner at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, Vice Chief of Defence Forces in Australia, reminded everyone of the role of the navy in protecting our freedoms.

US Consul representative Douglas Wallace used trade relations, including tourism, to show how the friendships forged between Australia and the United States have expanded over the last 75 years.

He read a letter to the audience from President Donald Trump that clearly indicated that the friendships forged between the United States and Australia will continue into the future.

President of the Stanthorpe and District Naval Association president Norm Gale said he and his members couldn’t have been prouder of the events of the day.

“We think this is the only inland commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea,” Mr Gale said.

“Having Admirals Griggs and Noonan visiting along with US Counsellor Wallace shows that the navy is important in country areas as well and that all Australians are proud of being Australians and our history.”

“We had so many other special guests from the military, from Federal departments and, of course our local and state politicians, that it was a great day for Stanthorpe and our district.”

Cold case murder trial The murder trial of Warwick man Vincent O’Dempsey is due to resume today in the Brisbane Supreme Court after being delayed this week due to the illness of a legal counsel in the proceedings. The trial last heard evidence last Friday 5 May. O’Dempsey, 79, pleaded not guilty on the first day of the trial on Tuesday 2 May to all charges relating to the disappearance of Brisbane mum Barbara McCulkin and her daughters Vicki and Leanne 43 years ago. O’Dempsey is facing three charges of murder and one of deprivation of liberty in the trial which began in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday, after the jury in the case was empanelled. A rape charge against O’Dempsey was dropped last December.

Barbara McCulkin was aged 34 when she disappeared, Vicki was 13 and Leanne 11. The McCulkins were last seen alive on January 16, 1974, at their Highgate Hill home in inner Brisbane. It has been alleged the McCulkins were killed because of what the Brisbane mother knew about a nightclub firebombing.

Guide gaffe cost ratepayers the Visitor Guide with the error on the map was delivered to tourism operators and the Visitor Information Centres in Warwick and Stanthorpe before the mistake was realised, and the copies were hastily recalled.

The publication was produced by officers of the council’s Economic Development Unit based in the Warwick Town Hall.

A previous version of the Visitor Guide produced by the now-defunct Destination Southern Downs tourism body - which had its funding scrapped by the council last year - contained advertising which helped to offset the production costs.

The current version produced by the council which has taken over tourism marketing directly - contains no advertising, making the cost to ratepayers of the production slip-up even greater.

But error or no error, some operators are believed to be critical of the product, as the map-

ping contains no tourism operator listing to assist visitors to locate accommodation and attractions.

It has also been pointed out that the previous DSD Visitor Guides had a three-page fold-out map as opposed to two pages in the current version.

Stanthorpe tourism operator Marion Carrick acknowledged that “all businesses make mistakes”, but said for the council to leave Stanthorpe’s name off the map “is a large one”.

“It unfortunately supports many Stanthorpe residents' feelings of being forgotten by council,” she told the Free Times.

“Added to that are the financial repercussions for the ratepayers, who now have to bear the costs of the original print and reprint.”

A council spokeswoman said, “Council has no comment as council is currently in discussion with APN/ARM in relation to the printing contract.”

Last Friday 5 May Stanthorpe police attended a single-vehicle crash on Nundubbermere Road at Greenlands. The three occupants of the vehicle were taken to Stanthorpe Hospital for observation. The 28-year-old Asian driver was issued with an infringement notice for failing to have proper control of vehicle.

The head of the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) Integrity Regulation Unit Norm Torpey was this week reassigned from his role after an independent investigation into a complaint of misconduct.

The development came as a 46-year-old Warwick man was due to face the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court yesterday over an unrelated charge of harness race fixing, which the QRIC assisted police in laying in April.

QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett made the decision to remove Mr Torpey as head of the integrity unit after an independent investigation found he had not properly investigated a matter reported by a participant.

Also due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court on harness race fixing charges is a 27-year-old Limestone Ridges Man, who is scheduled to appear today.

By Jeremy Sollars A new tourism guide for the region produced by the Southern Downs Regional Council had to be pulped and re-printed after an embarrassing error saw the name of Stanthorpe left off the key map in the publication.

The full-colour Southern Downs and Granite Belt 2017/2018 Visitor Guide was printed by APN Print in Warwick’s Axis Industrial Estate on high-quality gloss paper with glue-based binding, as opposed to cheaper stitching.

It is not suggested that APN Print are to blame for the costly error, which appears to be a proofreading issue.

The Free Times understands the first print run cost the council $35,000 and that APN Print produced the corrected version for the cost price of $29,000.

Last Saturday 6 May afternoon about 3.15pm Stanthorpe police attended the scene of a two-vehicle crash that occurred at the intersection of High Street and the New England Highway (Northern bypass). A 30-year-old female Asian driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice for failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection. Killarney police are seeking information from the public in relation to four businesses broken into in Killarney last Sunday evening.

LJ Hooker, St Vincent De Paul, the Killarney Recreation Club and Veronica’s on Willow were all targeted.

Damage was caused to each premises but all that was found missing was a charity donation box from Veronica’s on Willow.

Warwick Scenes of Crime officers examined the premises and Killarney police are making follow-up inquiries including viewing CCTV footage.

By Jeremy Sollars Ladies from across the Rose City and beyond are set to swoon this Saturday when singer, songwriter, dancer, actor and all-round nice guy Johnny Ruffo hits town for the 2017 Warwick Picnic Races at Allman Park this Saturday.

The popular entertainer responded enthusiastically to a request from the Warwick Turf Club to perform and MC at ‘the Picnics’.

Johnny shot to fame on series three of ‘The X Factor Australia’ in 2011 and is also known to ‘Home and Away’ fans for playing the character of Chris Harrington for three years between 2013 and 2016, and from the recentlypremiered mini-series ‘House of Bond’.

It turns out that Sydney-based Johnny has a link a little closer to home, in the form of girlfriend Tahnee Sims’ dad Kevin, who is a horse trainer in Toowoomba - and who may have a runner at Allman Park on Saturday.

Johnny told the Free Times it would be “an absolute pleasure” to entertain the Picnic Races crowd, performing a selection of his music and being the MC for the day, along with hosting and judging the popular Fashions on the Field.

“We get up to Toowoomba a bit

to see Tahnee’s family, so that’s more or less how it all came about - through the racing connections,” Johnny said.

“But it’s my first visit to Warwick and I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ll be keeping it upbeat and fun - I guess if people have had a couple of drinks I might be able to get them up on the dance floor, but I’ll just be doing my best to keep everyone entertained throughout the day.”

Johnny will arrive in Warwick late on Friday in time for a dinner with race day sponsors.

“I’ll be having a pretty quiet night - I need to be fresh for Saturday,” he laughed.

In between co-hosting ‘Studio 10’ and doing gigs around the country of late, fans will be excited to know that Johnny - originally a Perth boy - is currently writing songs for a new album to be released later in the year.

And he says it’s going to be “a little different” to his previous releases.

“It’ll be a lot more personal and a bit less ‘bubble-gum’ pop, I guess you could say,” Johnny said.

“It’ll still have the pop vibe and you’ll be able to dance to it, but I’m touching a bit more on things like growing up and the experiences I’ve had over the last

couple of years.

“I’m trying to paint a picture of what life has been like and exploring what I’ve learned.

“I’ve been spending a lot of time in the studio lately, I’ll probably have 20 or 30-odd songs and then I’ll narrow them down to the ones I’m happy to have on the album.

“I can’t really say at this stage when it will be released, I’ve still got a lot of work to do on it and I’d rather push it back until I’m really happy with it.”

Johnny says while he doesn’t have a mentor as such these days, Guy Sebastian - who mentored him on ‘X Factor’ - is still “a good mate” and he’s also been doing “a bit of writing” with Shannon Noll, and Michael Jackson remains his “all-time greatest musical inspiration”.

Fete-full day The Warwick Anglican Parish Fete is on this Saturday 13 May in the St Mark’s Church parish grounds at the corner of Albion and Grafton streets, from 9am to 1pm.

Attractions include the Warwick Spinners and Weavers, an animal nursery, kiddies’ corner and free jumping castle, wood turning, auction and vintage cars, with stalls selling cakes and sweets, a jumble sale, produce, crafts and books. A barbecue, chocolate wheel and morning tea will be available.

Entertainment commences at 8am from the Country Music Band, Inverness Highland Dancing and the Warwick Thistle Pipe Band.

Proceeds to church missions include the School Chaplaincy Fund.

Friday with friends The Freestone Memorial Hall will host its monthly ‘Friendly Friday’ social gathering tomorrow night, Friday 12 May, from 5.30pm to 8pm.

Whenever we buy an established property (as opposed to off-the-plan) we know we’re buying a property with a history, but most of the time we aren’t too concerned about that history.

Is the property structurally sound, is it termite free, does the property flood? These are some of the key issues most buyers are concerned with when they are looking closely at buying a property.

However, sometimes a property’s history can include more than a growing family that up-sized their property to get a bigger yard. Sometimes the property can have a stigma due to recent events and these events can influence a buyer’s decision on whether to buy or not. In those instances, it is helpful to know what information you can reasonably expect to get from the seller’s agent when they are showing you a property and what the law requires of agents in the situation of a potentially stigmatised property.

What is a stigmatised property?

A property may become stigmatised if it has been associated with an unsavoury event. While having no physical impact on the property, stigmas can affect the way some people feel about the property psychologically.

However, this is a very subjective issue and can be different from one person to the next. What one person finds a deal-breaker may not worry another person.

For example, what if the previous owner died a peaceful death in their sleep after 40 happy years in the property? That is unlikely to influence many people’s buying decision. But for some cultures, if someone has died in the property, regardless of how the death occurred, it may be considered bad luck to live in that property. So, to them, it is a stigmatised property.

What is a material fact?

There’s no checklist that tells agents what they must disclose, but as a general rule if something is likely to influence someone’s decision to buy a property - a material fact - then it must be disclosed.

The law does not specify what makes a material fact, but describes it as any fact that “may have a bearing on a reasonable person’s decision to proceed with a property transaction”.

Common causes of stigma for properties: Death, such as a murder, suicide or natural causes.

Crime, such as an assault, theft, drug dealing, or sexual crimes.

Health-related issues, featuring contagious diseases.

Troublesome neighbours (such as the presence of sex offender).

Environmental conditions, which could include soil contamination, aircraft noise, industrial odours.

Other psychological factors of significance to the buyer (for example, the rumoured presence of ghosts).

No-one could help but notice the eye-catching displays of colourful petunias in the roundabouts in Palmerin Street. What wonderful, hardy and versatile flowers they are.

They will grow in almost any position but obviously will do best in good quality, free draining, fertile soil in full sun and will flower prolifically for months.

The colour choices in the roundabouts look very pretty and brighten the streets. The massed beds in Leslie Park are also looking good.

Petunias are native to South America and are closely related to tobacco, tomatoes, potatoes, cape gooseberries, deadly nightshade and chilli peppers.

The name comes from petun a Tupian Indian word for tobacco. Some types have been reclassified recently as Calibrachoa and these are what we now know as “million bells” because of their smaller prolific flowers and sprawling, low growing habit.

Petunias are actually a perennial, but as they do not tolerate frosts, they are usually treated as an annual and planted in spring.

They will continue to flower right through summer and autumn with care and frequent dead heading to keep them compact.

They do like a fare amount of watering but are amazing tolerant of dry conditions when established.

Too much heavy rain or overhead watering will spoil the flowers so a gentle spray is best.

However they will recover quickly from water damage and soon be covered in a riot of colour again.

While most are bred to be compact, erect, showy mounds of flowers there are some sprawling patio varieties that are ideal for hanging bas-

The colour range seems endless and each year new colours become available in single or doubles, solid colours, speckled or veined.

Like all legumes, with the aid of bacteria, they are able to convert nitrogen from the air to a form that can be used by other plants, so, after they have finished bearing cut them down, pull them up and dig them into the bed as a green manure crop.

What a weekend in the sporting spotlight. The NRL Representative round showcased the superior talent of the Kangaroos on Friday night.

Cameron Smith cemented himself as one of the icons of the modern game as he notched up game number 50 in the Kangaroos’ jersey and another win as captain. Maroons and Cowboys fans had plenty to be concerned about as news of a shoulder injury to JT surfaced. Dragons and Blues fans are sweating on the health of Josh Dugan.

The Pacific nations treated fans to style of expansive and exciting rugby league that we rarely see week to week in the NRL. The Poms notched up a win over Samoa but they too have plenty of work to do between now and the World Cup. On Sunday the curtain came down on the annual NSW City Country game. City got the better of their Country cousins in the final game in an enthralling clash.

AFL fans could do little other than watch a round of monumental upsets unfold.

The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly the A League Grand Final. Sydney FC capped off their stellar season with a nail-biting Championship win over a brave Melbourne Victory.

The weekend games across all codes highlighted everything good in sport. Then came the news of multiple drug-related incidents allegedly involving NRL players and also an NRL Club CEO. These latest alleged indiscretions have come at a high price for those involved and rightly so.

NRL fans have again been left with a sour taste in the mouth but spare a thought for Todd Greenberg and those running rugby league. They are desperate to improve the game’s image. There are no easy answers or quick fixes to these problems. Unfortunately for them it is, as the saying goes, impossible to legislate against stupidity.

Seems some have not only talent but that quality, stupidity in spades.

- Casey PURCELL IN HOT FORM The Wallangarra Golf Club May Monthly Medal was decided last weekend. Winner of the event sponsored by the Wall Garra Railway Cafe was Jamie Purcell who finished with a winning score of nett 65. Runner-up was Andrew Thompson. Since the demotion of John Green the pin placements seem far more player friendly, and there were some handy scores across the board. Purcell also wrapped a big day by winning the Putting competition also with 24 putts. This weekend a single stableford has been scheduled.

BUSY WEEK FOR MALLET PLAYERS Association croquet players welcomed Pat Schnoor back to their ranks this week. Sharyn Roser who plays each of the other croquet disciplines dropped in to try her hand. Grace Howard and Joy Newman won their game against Heather Widderick and Val Fancourt. While newcomer Sharyn Roser played in a 21-all draw in her first try at the new discipline.

Stand put performer this week was Bev Sullivan, scoring a total of 17 hoops over two games, with 11 of them coming in the second game. It was a day when all players were in good form and scored well, making games close.

The gateball crew were busy on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the White team of Val Fancourt, Grace Howard, Joy Newman, and Bill Golding, with Margaret Dickenson captaining the side played strongly winning the first two games 13-7 and 12-11.

Game three finished nine a tie and a shoot-out determined the winner. Another win to White (54) thanks to some accurate shots from Bill Golding and Andrea Denkewitz.

On Saturday, Andrea Denkewitz and Val Fancourt, (Red Team) went head to head with Sharyn Roser and Bill Golding. Red narrowly won the first two games. Val Fancourt scored an “Agari” to claim the winning point in the second game. Game three went to White 14-7. Bill Golding was the most consistent player on the day while Sharyn Roser scored

a fine “bomb” (hitting two balls out with one shot) in the second game.

BACK IN ACTION Sporters were back in action last week and honours went to Max Jones ahead of runner-up Nikki Waterworth. Run-downs went to Aaron Simmers and Paul Armstrong who also had the best gross. The pin shots and the pro pin all went a begging. Meat tray winners were Mark Lynam and Phil Zikan. Tee off on this Sunday is from 8am-8.30am.

TANSEY DOMINATES Tansy Polocrosse Club dominated the Clifton Polo carnival. Tansey teams were both winners and runners-up in the A Grade. Tansey 1 rider Grant Carrol won best A Grade Horse and Rider. The Tansey teams scooped the pool with wins in A, B, C, E and G grade games. Cunningham 2 defeated Cunningham 3 in D Grade and Stanley River defeated Toowoomba in F Grade bucking Tansey trend. In the junior competition, Cunningham defeated Gold Coast. Cunningham rider Ashleigh Sticklen won Best Junior horse and rider.

JUNIOR SHOWS THE WAY Junior Golfer Billy Webb showed the way on Saturday in the battle for the Stanthorpe Monthly Medal.

The win capped off a good week for the junior who earlier was selected in his age group for Darling Downs Schoolboys Golf. He also won a share in the club’s raffle for some golf equipment. Grant Howard had the best gross of the round and finished runner-up with nett 67. Sean O’Reilly had the best putting performance - 27 for the round.

Lyn Ludlow won the Ladies event scoring nett 75. Daughter Rachael Hendry made it a family affair claiming the runners-up spot one shot in arrears.

Hendry scored the best gross of the round. Neta Thouard putted well to claim the award for the best putting performance.

There is no clear favourite in the club championship after the completion of round one. Leaders are Grant Howard “A” Grade; Bill Pyne “B” Grade; Bob Watts “C” Grade.

The second round will be held this Saturday when Bob Watts sponsors a stroke event. Self-selected fours again this week in round two however a seeded draw will be in place next round. Tee off is from 11am and there is a time sheet at the club.

BRL UNDERWAY After weeks of uncertainty the BRL 2017 competition kicked off on Saturday with games in Killarney and Stanthorpe.

At Charlie Andrews Oval, Killarney opened the season with a 22-14 win over Tenterfield and confirmed predictions that they will be contenders.

In Stanthorpe, a young Gremlins side took on the reigning premiers Inglewood. It was the first outing in A Grade for a number of the Gremlins. Newly appointed Gremlins coach Gary Skimmings was impressed with the effort of his young players who despite a mounting score line against them played with a “never say die” attitude.

As expected, the Roosters outclassed the Gremlins - the score blowing out to 58-4. Corey Rashleigh was the Gremlins lone try scorer. Gremlins supporters will see improvement in the side as their fitness levels improve and should continue to support these young players who should be applauded for “having a go”.

This week the Gremlins travel to Tenterfield while Inglewood host Killarney in what looks to be a tough game.

VALLEYS TOO HOT FOR WATTLES Wattles came up against a red hot Valleys side at Herb Steinhort Oval last Sunday in round six of the TRL. Valleys were strong in the first half of the game and held a 20-8 lead at half time. Wattles showed plenty of spirit in the game and began the second half strongly with a try to Michael Pearson taking the scores to 20-14.

Valleys always looked to have the Warriors measure and quickly moved the score to 34-14.

Wattles fought back in the last 15 minutes putting on two tries. Braydon Wilson crossed for his third and James Johnson scored out wide taking the final score to 34-24. Valleys remain one of three undefeated TRL sides while at Wattles the injury list is growing. Karl Marsh and Brendan Wilson sustained injuries during the game. Valleys won Reserve Grade 22-12 and under-18s 50-16.

This week Wattles host Brothers on Saturday night.

It has been a season of ups and downs for the Cowboys. Their coach Craig Mullaly has not lost faith in his side but admits they must find some consistency before their season slips away.

In last weekend’s game, Warwick held the Eagles scoreless for 21 minutes before the floodgates opened. Brodie Quirk was the lone scorer for the Cowboys in the 34-4 loss.

The Reserve Grade side also suffered a 32-24 defeat but the news was better for the under-18s who won 32-12. Back to Fr Ranger Oval on Sunday the Cowboys main game kicks off at 2.30pm.

Kyle also had a good night, winning all his games with11x80 and nine tons. New players Nathan and Lizzie played a good game too.

On the weekend, premier darts hosted the Adam and Eve competition for division 2 with many teams of South East Qld attending. The men and ladies of Premier did very well, winning most of their games and finishing in 3rd position. All had a good time.
