Long wait at lights By Bonny Burrows A local driving instructor has questioned a six-month hold-up in activating pedestrian crossing lights at a Pakenham “danger zone”. Drive2Drive instructor Elaina Haig was instrumental in getting the McGregor Road pedestrian lights, just outside the Heritage Springs Shopping Centre, installed at the beginning of the year. The project was expected to be completed before the beginning of the school year. But almost six months on, the lights on the 70 kilometre per hour road have remained dormant - and she wants to know why. In a bid for answers, Ms Haig has been in contact with all relevant bodies responsible for local roads and electricity supply. However finding the cause of the delay has proved difficult. Cardinia Shire, VicRoads and electricity provider AusNet have all pointed the finger at each other. But Ms Haig said she didn’t care whose fault it was, she just wanted the lights switched on before somebody got hit. “This is a 70km/h road; according to the TAC (Transport Accident Commission) 30km/h is enough to seriously injury someone so at 70, a child will die,” Ms Haig said. manned during school pick-up and drop-offs by a crossing supervisor. This wasn’t safe, Ms Haig said, as cars flew down the road. She said the solution was simple - turn on the lights. “They’re there ready to go and have been for almost six months. It’s not that hard,” Ms Haig said. A spokesperson for VicRoads told the Gazette the project was “sitting with Cardinia Shire Council”. Cardinia Shire Council acting manager of Infrastructure Services Cathal O’Loughlin said the lights were installed in January by a council contractor. “As part of this work, the contractor applied to Ausnet Services to have power connected to the signals,” Mr O’Loughlin said. “Council received the offer for the power connection from Ausnet Services on 4 May 2017, which we have accepted. However, we have not yet received a response advising when the electrification of the signals will occur.” An Ausnet Services spokeswoman was contacted for comment. “Connecting pedestrian lights involves detailed planning and site work. We have been working with Cardinia Council since February,” the spokeswoman said. “Once the council has submitted payment and final plans, we will connect the lights.”

Berwick Health and Education Precinct Development Plan for 122 hectares on either side of Clyde Road. Mr Jakob said the university - which began as a TAFE-like institution in Ballarat 140 years ago - looked forward to working with precinct neighbours Chisholm Institute, Casey Hospital, St John of God Private Hospital and the business community. “From the university’s perspective, we’re very supportive of the new precinct plan and proud to have a position in that plan. “Our Ballarat campus is also well embedded in the Ballarat community in that sense.” Federation University proposes to partner in a Berwick business technology park similar to an enterprise at Ballarat which supports 1500 jobs at IBM, the State Revenue Office and other major businesses. With IBM, the university built a “strong teaching and research collaboration”, Mr Jakob said. “Our mission is to provide access to education in regional and rural areas. “Berwick, as a peri-urban area, a fast-growing peri-urban area, is well-fitted to Federation University.”

The program includes nursing and health sciences, business and education courses, as well as adding environmental and veterinary sciences and IT courses for the first time at the former Monash University campus. “We will roll out those programs over the next two or three years, with second or third year units opening by 2020.” Federation University opened its doors at the start of 2017, though is still in the process of acquiring the campus from Monash University. Under the 15-year precinct plan released by Victorian Planning Authority and Casey Council, up to 11,000 jobs, 13,000 students, 700 hospital beds and 1100 apartments are expected to be created.

Its future is a mix of multistorey health clinics, education institutions, apartments, offices and small-scale retail. Part of the plan is to improve access and the profile of Buchanan Park, as well as retain an open-space corridor and build wetlands and a network of cycle paths. There would be improved access to Berwick station, and plans for an extra intersection on Clyde Road for the precinct’s traffic. Separate to the plan, the VPA and Casey Council are also proposing to rezone land on Margaret, Evan, Jane and Mansfield streets for “highquality” residential growth. Drop-in information sessions on the plan will be held at Chisholm Institute, Berwick, on 18 May at 5pm and 6pm. Public submissions are open until 29 May. Search for a star launched By Cam Lucadou-Wells An annual Cranbourne singing contest, which has raised more than $25,000 for Cancer Council Victoria, is open for auditions. Star Search 2016 winners Victoria Nikolaou and Frankie Mileto say they revelled in the experience - an audition, heats and then a grand final. Both have gone on to perform with other grand finallists at Berwick Show, Casey Kids Carnival and Relay 4 Life events. Victoria, 11, who took out the junior category with a performance of Little Mix’s song Wings, is re-entering in the next oldest age-division. She’s loved singing for as long as she can remember and sung at festivals and school concerts.

The Star Search quest took her confidence to another level. She got more comfortable on stage and made a heap of friends, with a dream of a stint on Eurovision quite a few years down the track - or being the next Adele. “I enjoyed the experience a lot,” she says. “It was fun and exciting. I was a little bit nervous about it but got over it quite quickly.” Frankie, a 22-year-old actor, won the people’s choice award with some famous air-guitar on the floor during his rendition of Pink’s song Trouble. He appreciated the supportive environment, given he didn’t have a singing background. “It’s great just to be up on stage and being able to perform - and it’s for a good cause.”

Star Search, which is run by volunteers, will once again donate money to helping people with cancer. Singers of all ages can perform a song either as a solo, duo or trio act at the auditions. Without any need to prebook, they are instructed to bring their music as well as a $15 entry fee. The event progresses to heats in July, with the grand final battle for cash and trophies at Westfield Fountain Gate in August. SES winners all the way By Helena Adeloju A new State Emergency Services facility is in the works for Officer, with $2 million allocated towards the project in the State Budget. VICSES Spokesman Simon Kinniburgh said the plan couldn’t come soon enough as it would relieve existing SES units in neighbouring suburbs. “The new unit in Officer will take the existing pressure off the Pakenham unit who respond to emergencies in Officer and Officer South,” he said. Despite the allocation of funding for the project, further details of the plan are to be released by the State Government. “VICSES are still seeking further clarification regarding the State Budget announcements in relation to VICSES funding,” Mr Kinninburgh said. The Andrews Government has allocated $34.3 million in this year’s budget for VICSES “to modernise their buildings and establish brand new units” across the state. The funds will also go towards purchasing new equipment, including trucks, boats and trailers. Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino said the funding injection would give SES volunteers more security. In a significant reform, $14.9 million will cover the operational costs of SES units and also assist with long-term leases for those located on council land, giving volunteers more certainty about their future. Member for Eastern Victoria Region Daniel Mulino MP said the funding recognised the vital role the SES played. “Our dedicated volunteers in Cardinia do an incredible job. They step up at any time of day or night to help people in their time of need,” he said. “These new facilities mean that they will have first-rate facilities to continue their outstanding work.”

Pakenham Heights Kindergarten has received a welcome boost to its playground restoration fund-raising efforts. Barry Plant Real Estate agent Terri Fellows presented a giant cheque for $500 to the kindergarten on Friday 28 April. “I just want to do whatever I can to help the Pakenham community because these children are our future,” Ms Fellows said. The donation comes after Cardinia council notified the kindergarten earlier this year that much of the original playground equipment was no longer safe. The 40-year-old wooden

playground is currently cordoned off until enough money can be raised to restore or replace it. The old play equipment has been used by hundreds of children over the past four decades with little or no maintainence. Pakenham Heights Kindergarten fund-raising committee member Emma Spoard, whose son Thomas attends the kindergarten, said the existing wooden equipment needs to be repaired. The fort and hill area of the playground, which was a much loved site for the kids’ games, is currently out of bounds because of splintered wood and protruding nails. “The children love the fort,

it’s definitely a favourite for them,” she said. Ms Spoard said the fort and the hill area will be an instant hit with the kids when enough money has been raised to complete the work. For now the kids are making do with playing on the slides and monkey bars. Ms Spoard said the playground project relies on donations and fund-raising. “We are incredibly grateful for Ms Fellows’ generous donation,” she said. Push to solve Casey’s homelessness ‘crisis’

Call goes out to back health hub

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Gembrook MP Brad Battin has called on the State Government to reverse its state-budget snub of a $1 million plan for a mental health and wellbeing hub at Berwick College. Mr Battin said the government was “making all the right noises” about mental health among young people in Casey-Cardinia but had not funded the school’s vision. The proposed Wellbeing Centre, which would be available for broader community use, would have rooms for a GP, counsellors, a sick bay and a room for educational sessions. Talks on domestic violence and other factors for mental health could be delivered during and after school hours. The idea comes after the Casey region had been rocked by a “cluster” of 12 young deaths by suicide in 2011/12, which led to a State Coroner’s report on the phenomenon’s “elevated frequency”. “Our community has suffered enough with the pain of young people taking their lives,” Mr Battin said. “We are reminded daily of the tragic events on social media, memorial sites and kids still talk about the pain they felt. “You would struggle to find a person who has not been touched by suicide, and many of those who take their life are only at the beginning of life themselves.” Mr Battin said Berwick College principal Kerri Bolch and teachers showed leadership by coming up with a Wellbeing Centre in 2014 to help students at greatest risk. “When we are talking about young people’s lives we must note we only need $1 million. If it saves one life, it is worth it.” Berwick College school council presi-

Roger Hall and Kerri Bolch still waiting at the vacant site for the mental health wellbeing centre. 167988 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS dent Roger Hall said he was disappointed the proposal - with “broad acceptance from both sides of politics, both State and Federal” - didn’t win funding. “The centre would be an extremely valuable asset for the school in dealing with the welfare problems we encounter among our 1600-plus students at our school.” Mr Hall said the college’s five welfare staff and nurse worked in “acutely cramped” spaces to fulfil a “not unreasonable expectation” that the school cared for the “whole” student. He said the cost wasn’t excessive compared to the community benefits. “I am a very firm believer in the concept that it is better to have ‘a fence at the top of

the cliff than an ambulance at the bottom’.” Principal Kerri Bolch said she was passionate about creating a centre to educate students and the community on the factors leading to mental health issues, and were keen to explore ways to fund it. Ms Bolch said the school had an understanding the proposal was being considered in the state budget. She said mental health issues were prevalent among young people. “We have the support of many community groups and hope to work together to make a difference now and in the future.” Star News is awaiting a response from the State Government.

Casey councillor Milla Gilic has called for a “crisis meeting” between the council and community organisations to solve the municipality’s emergency-housing shortage. At a council meeting on 2 May, Cr Gilic shared harrowing stories of vulnerable families sheltering in cars for a range of reasons including domestic violence and poverty. She told of a mother and her VCE-student son living in a car for several months. A local homelessness service had only been able to provide them shelter in a motel for a few days, Cr Gilic said. In another case, a mother with stage-four cancer and her 30-year-old autistic son were also without a home. They were not sure how long they could stay in emergency accommodation. Cr Gilic said there were groups, including national organisations, willing to back a solution with “significant monetary support” - providing that the need was proven. She said the solution may not involve a further financial commitment from Casey Council. Councillors unanimously backed Cr Gilic’s motion for the meeting between councillors, council officers and possible donors, and for a council report on how Casey Council could assist. Cr Geoff Ablett said Cr Gilic had garnered significant

financial pledges to solving a problem that entrapped “thousands” in Casey. The latest social housing waiting list for the southern metropolitan region, including Casey and Greater Dandenong, is more than 4000 - including 701 waiting for priority-access. WAYSS homelessness services manager Jen Kelly said families living in cars was the “real” picture of homelessness - rather than people sleeping in Swanston Street. “It’s really tough out there. There’s a shortage of available properties and we try not to send people away. “We need governments to stop their politicising these poor people who are homeless.” On latest figures, there were 21 known individuals “sleeping rough” in cars, crisis accommodation, tents or parks in Cranbourne, Lynbrook and Hampton Park, Ms Kelly said. Recently, WAYSS was able to help 39 families or individuals with $54,000 of private rental access funding since March, and was looking forward to more of the funds as part of a State Government initiative. It helps families who are moved on by private landlords get a bond and a first month’s rent for a new tenancy. Part of the problem was a lack of affordable rentals. It was common for people to apply for up to 40 rental properties, Ms Kelly said.

Cranbourne small business, residents, students, elderly and shoppers deserve better. We need to route all of this traffic around our main street and given Dingley, Dandenong, Kooweerup and now Mordialloc have funding, why punish Cranbourne? It is no fun being misrepresented or misunderstood. This is one of the key points made by Michael Boss and Mat Harry about the experience of many Muslim people in Australia in the Cranbourne News article ‘Cornerstone of Ignorance’. It is good that they are concerned. However two wrongs do not make a right, and this article only made misunderstanding worse – this time for churches and their people. I have met with Michael Boss and share his concerns about the attitudes of some Christians and some members of the wider public towards Muslim people. However, contrary to what the article suggests (an article which unfortunately triggered an equally unhelpful article in the 23 April Sunday Age), the explanation for most of the 110 Casey Churches not responding to an invitation to sign the Casey Against Racism’s statement in June last year is probably that they are not aware of having received it. I am not aware of having received mine, let alone of receiving follow-up telephone calls. None of my Cranbourne clergy colleagues remembers receiving it, and only one of my Casey Anglican colleagues is aware of having received it. In what sense can it be said that

we ‘rejected a reconciliatory statement’? It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the article was not a hastily researched, and unfair, ‘beat-up’, even if six other churches failed to ‘reply before deadline’. Dracula’s tale chills the blood From the company behind the multi-award winning, national touring productions of 1984 and Animal Farm comes a new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s twisted tale Dracula. Queensland production company Shake and Stir is hitting Victoria with the gripping, bloody classic, with the critically acclaimed production set to take the stage at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Tuesday 6 June. Audience members are set to jump out of their chairs in fright as young Lawyer Jonathan Harker visits Castle Dracula deep within the Carpathian Mountains. Receiving strange hospitality from his mysterious host, Jonathan becomes alone and trapped within the castle walls and discovers that Dracula wants more than his presence at the dinner table he might also be the main course. Dracula then travels to London on a quest for seduction, true love and above all - blood. Shake and Stir’s adaption of Dracula has already made its way across Brisbane, with The Sunday Mail stating, that “there’s no stopping Brisbane’s Shake and Stir as it presents another standout production and reaffirms its spot as one of the country’s most exciting theatre companies”.

Despite almost trashing it, she then comes to believe that it is a Jackson Pollock piece which is worth millions. In fact she’s certain it is. But when world-class art expert Lionel Percy (John Wood) flies over from New York and arrives at her trailer park home in Bakersfield to authenticate the painting, he really has no idea what he’s about to discover.

Berry’s Ferrari Challenge set By Stewart Bell Daniel Ricciardo won’t be the only Australian racing under lights at September’s Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, with Maryknoll’s own Martin Berry competing in the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific. Singapore, which hosts F1’s original night race around the streets of Marina Bay, is preparing for its milestone 10th event and the festivities are expected to be epic. On-track, F1s will be supported by Ferrari, with the Prancing Horse bringing its most-powerful 488 Challenge steed yet for the Asia Pacific series, while Porsche Carrera Cup Asia has the region’s best racers, including another Australian, Paul Tresidder, in near-identical 911 GT3 Cup cars. For Berry, the event is the opportunity of a lifetime. “It’s been on my bucket list for some time,” said Berry, who is an entrepreneur - and now based in Singapore, where he’s lived on-and-off for the last six years. “I’m not sure that words can adequately explain the level of excitement and an element of nervousness at ticking it off. Off-track, the star-studded entertainment line-up has already made headlines, with American pop superstar Ariana Grande joined by British synth-pop veterans Duran Duran, American pop rockers OneRepublic, DJ duo The Chainsmokers, British singer-songwriters Seal and Lianne La Havas, and spoken word performer George the Poet. Berry, who uses Singapore as a base for building and investing in companies throughout Asia, says the Grand Prix is one of F1’s very best. “The thing that really sets Singapore apart has to be how the track winds its way through the city streets in what is such an iconic city backdrop,” he said. “Throw in the fact that it’s a night race that lights-up the city, the humid climate and you have a recipe for motor-racing heaven.”

The Pakenham Warriors’ Big V Division 2 men’s basketball team is off to the best start in its history after a commanding 90-73 win over fellow title aspirants, the Collingwood All Stars, at Collingwood College on Saturday night. Brent Russell’s Warriors moved to 7-0 on the season after leading by just a point - 4645 - at half-time. While star Collingwood guard Manny Hendrix continued to look for his shot and to stay aggressive throughout the contest, Pakenham’s defensive pressure on him was stifling restricting him to just 4-16 from the field in his 13-point, 10-assist double-double in front of a vocal home crowd. Dylan Webb was stellar for the home side, draining 10 of his 15 attempts from the field to finish with 26 points, but the All-Stars ultimately had no answer for Pakenham’s transition game - both offensively and defensively. At half-time in the rooms Russell lamented the opportunities the All-Stars were getting at second chance baskets, and also urged his men to eliminate the needless fouls that had plagued them in the early going. He demanded a lift on the defensive end and called for his charges to bring a real ‘championship mentality’. And in the second half, they displayed exactly that. The Warriors’ transition

The weather gods turned nasty for SEFNL netballers on Saturday as bitterly cold conditions hit the south east corridor of Melbourne. The most interesting clash of the weekend was between Beaconsfield and Hampton Park, grand finalist against Narre Warren over the last two years. The Eagles prevailed by five goals, 42-37, in a game that could have serious repercussions going forward. We all know the Eagles are a genuine threat this season while the Redbacks are an interesting case study. A plethora of new faces descended on Robert Booth Reserve in the off-season - the most impressive performance of their season. “We’re really excited about the second half of the year,” said Redbacks coach Kylie Kibble. “I think it’s taken until now for the girls to gel, this was our best game and we started working hard for each other after half time. Beaconsfield is a really strong side so to only go down by five, have Shannon (Rennison) out, and win the last two quarters was a really great effort I thought.” Beacy started with all guns blazing, Jasmine Jones (centre and wing attack) once again brilliant through the midcourt while Britnee Tyers (goal defence) and Dani Cameron (goal keeper) made scoring difficult for the Redbacks. The 1pm showdown will see an interleague legend in SEFNL coach Michael ‘Jock’ Holland lock horns with former AFL great Jonathan Brown, with both men looking to elevate their leagues into a top-10 force in the state. Holland has been there and done it before with the Demons, rising from a VCFL ranking of 17 in 2012 to a ranking of 10 after victories over Nepean, Wimmera, Bellarine and Sunraysia. The inclusion of metropolitan leagues in Eastern, Essendon, Northern and Western saw the Demons drop to 14 last year before a stunning victory over Murray at Mulwala saw them jump back to 12.
