A car crash that injured three people at Westfield Geelong has ignited a debate over licence testing for elderly drivers.

Emergency services rushed to the scene Thursday morning after a man in his 60s smashed into the shopping centre’s western glass-door entrance.

Paramedics took the driver and two elderly pedestrians to hospital as police closed surrounding streets while investigators checked for structural damage to the building.

Police said the three crash victims escaped “life-threatening” injuries.

The driver had apparently accelerated his Toyota Camry sedan on Corio St toward the doors, said Geelong Senior Sergeant Nicole Yin. “The two pedestrians were inside the shopping centre,” Sen Sgt Yin said.

In Brief Burglars chased

A Torquay man is leading an Australian bid to buy an English Premier League team.

Australian Football Consortium (AFC) consultant Gerard Murphy implemented a leadership program for Geelong Football Club in its 2007 premiership year, according to his website.

Mr Murphy confirmed his involvement when the Geelong Indy contacted him in England but he declined to comment further on the team bid.

The consortium wants to raise $55 million so it can buy an underperforming English football team for elevation to premier league.

“Of this we are resolute,” the consortium’s website reads. “Winning is important to us. It is AFC’s intention to inject significant funds to ensure that this occurs.”

The consortium will most likely target a team in English football’s third-tier League One. Socceroos legend Mark Schwarzer confirmed to

English media that AFC had approached him for advice.

“In the right hands, there are a number of clubs that could turn around their fortunes very quickly,” Schwarzer told UK radio’s TalkSport.

“There are a lot of clubs at the moment who have fans who are very disgruntled about owners so there is always going to be links with any type of consortium. There’s a lot with a huge amount of potential for investors. It’s very early stages. I was asked about whether, if it were to come to fruition, I would be interested in becoming involved in some capacity.”

Melbourne’s Herald Sun has reported that Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson is advising the consortium.

The consortium had also approached Australian team coach Ange Postecoglou, the paper said, with Mr Murphy saying he provided sound advice.

Mr Murphy had not considered Postecoglou as a potential manager for the club.

“We need to appoint a manager who’s going to appeal to the fans, so that automatically disqualifies any Australian manager initially.”

Mr Murphy said appointing the right manager would be a priority.

“What we don’t want to do is what so many owners do and that’s alienating the fans early. English football fans are so passionate. In the initial stages, at least, we would not appoint anything but a coach or manager that had an appeal to local supporters.”

Murphy said the consortium was a “fair way down the track” in securing the money required.

Rumours about the consortium have run wild in England with the Daily Mail reporting it had been interested in purchasing beleaguered club Charlton Athletic. The UK press has also reported Coventry City and Bolton Wanderers as possible targets for the consortium.

“I totally understand it is hard for them to lose their independence but it is just not safe.”

Karen Reynolds wanted “automatic retesting based on medications”.

“If people cannot function properly in everyday activities or life, whatever they be, then how can they possibly drive a car,” she posted.

Penelope Perrin raised the physical abilities of “old people” as she called for annual testing.

Amid much pomp and ceremony, Geelong’s three council administrators will conduct a “pre-reading” of their 30-year vision to 300 residents this weekend.

Fittingly hosted at The Pier, on Geelong’s waterfront, with childcare opportunities provided, the Our Future Assembly will bring participants up to date on nine months of consultations, with 16,000 contributors so far.

From 9.30am to 4pm the lucky attendees, evidently with nothing better to do on Saturdays, will hear all the chosen ways Geelong could evolve.

Then they’ll have the chance to add their own two cents for finalisation of the Our Future vision, just to make sure everyone’s had their say, of course.

Luckily, the 300 participants have been provided with a “pre-reading booklet” on the ideas to be presented at the assembly.

But the booklet “won’t have all the answers and isn’t meant to,” the administrators preadvise in the foreword.

“Actually, we hope it will raise more questions than it answers,” they say.

Frankly, given that Our Future will cost greater Geelong ratepayers $645,000, more than enough questions should have been raised already!

Anyway, to spare readers the tedium of attending the assembly, an interim report has already presented Our Future’s “top vision”.

And, cue trumpet fanfare, the vision of Geelong materialises as thus: “The leading regional city for sustainability and bio technology with the best bike network in Australia. A world-class tourist destination with unique points of interest and a flourishing creative industry. A university town attracting the brightest minds”.

RAISING QUESTIONS: Page 5 of the Our Future pre-reading booklet presents one of the administrators’ preferred visions for Geelong.

Hmm. Based on a literal reading, the vision seems to be a city of greenie scientists riding bicycles through crowds of tourists, artists and academics with glowing brains.

Sounds possible, mildly disturbing even, but Double Take was unconvinced.

So an alternative consultation process was commissioned, narrower on input but wider on insight.

And, sorry G-town, the outlook’s less unicorn and a whole lot more buzzard.

“A dystopian megatropolis where giant alien lizards pit human slaves in mortal combat at Kardinia Terrordome. An international incubator of mutant disease afflicting the remnants of humanity. Also, it has an ovoid sewerage aqueduct at Breakwater.”

Dear ratepayers, that’ll be $645,000, thanks!

While Geelong’s pseudo council grapples with the big picture, last week’s observation on Surf Coast councillors’ odd prioritising of symbolic flags over dire finances drew some interesting responses.

Robyn Webber reflected the general theme with her post on the Indy’s Facebook page.

“I am sure these people start out with good intentions,” Robyn posited, “but what is it that changes them into greedy, self-interested councillors who can no longer prioritise for the good of the ratepayers?”

Good question. And Robyn’s probably not the first to wonder how it is that candidates are elected to represent their community to the council but end up representing the council to their community.

Let’s just put it down to politics.

Gun goes off in scuffle with cop

Record entries for carnival of craft A record 100 entries from around the state have led to an expanded exhibition for Geelong’s eight annual KarnivART, according to organisers.

The display of works by artists with disabilities would remain at Eastern Hub until 2 June after opening this week, said Karingal St Laurence BacLinks Foundation’s Joanne Forssman.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the works of talented artists from right across the state,” she said.

“The entries have been received from independent artists, local art programs and disability organisations. The selection of pieces on display is very impressive.”

Joanne said KarnivART helped community services agency Karingal St Laurence assist people with disabilities or mental illness.

Open to Victorian artists aged over 15, KarnivART entries include photographs, mosaics, paintings, drawings, papier-mache and multimedia pieces.

Police have charged a man after he allegedly fired a police handgun at a North Geelong business in front of his mother.

The 36-year-old appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court Thursday afternoon facing charges including endangering life, serious police assault and indictable resisting arrest.

Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard said it was “incredibly lucky” no one was hurt.

Police arrived at the North Geelong mechanics on Separation St at 8am Thursday following reports of a workplace dispute.

“My understanding is that the dispute arose over a tool in a mechanic’s workshop,” Supt Gillard.

Two officers attempted to “quell” the dispute between two men, one of whom “was about to leave that business,” he said.

“It’s escalated to the extent where a male has assaulted another male in front of the police. That’s resulted in police deploying capsicum spray into the face of the male.

“That hasn’t had the desired effect and he’s then moved his attention to police.”

The two police officers went “hands-on” to arrest the man, Supt Gillard said.

“While on the ground ... that male offender has reached for our police member firearm and that’s resulted in the firearm being discharged.”

Supt Gillard said the handgun never left the holster during the incident.

“Early stages of our investigation indicate that the police members have not done anything wrong, they’ve acted purely in accordance with policy and their training.”

Victoria Police’s Professional Standards Command took statements from the officers and will inspect the handgun and holster.

“From there it’s very much about (the officers’) health and well-being,” Supt Gillard.

A number of people witnessed the incident, including the 36-year-old man’s mother, Supt Gillard said.

Nobody was injured as a result of the firearm discharging and a police officer sustained minor scratches as a result of the incident.

Storages fall despite big April rains

Local water storages have fallen despite Geelong’s wettest April in 146 years. Capacity fell from 65.5 to 64.2 per across the month, a decline around 1.5 billion litres, according to Barwon Water figures.

Over the same time Geelong had its second wettest April with 151mm of rain, the most since 1871.

Rain in most catchments was also “well-above“ April’s 10-year average, said Barwon Water’s Paul Northey.

The anomaly between storage and rain levels was mostly due to dry catchment soils, he said.

“The April rainfall has been effective in beginning to make the catchments wet, which is necessary for water to flow through the catchments and into our reservoirs, and minor flows into our reservoirs have occurred. However, further rainfall is required to maintain catchments, inflows and boost storage levels. The recent rainfall has not been enough to replace water consumed throughout the summer.”

Barwon Water was “pleased” that households were using on average 44,000 litres less annually than 10 years ago, Mr Northey said.

Entering Geelong Business Excellence Awards is easier than ever, according to organisers.

The “streamlined” process would encourage entries from more businesses, said Geelong Chamber of Commerce.

The 2017 changes limited each entry to 2000 words, including 250 for a summary of the business and how it operated, the chamber said.

Entrants also had a minimum 300 words to address each of the awards’ “five core criteria”: business achievements; marketing, customer services, people and culture; and financial management and risk.

The 2017 process impressed Clawbaby Pet Services Susie Blair, a previous entrant.

“The questions are simpler and easier to answer and a lot broader, which I think works better for small businesses as well,” Ms Blair said.

Bullying doctors beware

Feds ‘double deal’ over rail-line works

Barwon Health has committed to stamp out bullying among surgeons, after an Australia-wide survey in 2016 found the profession was rife with such behaviour.

The provider signed a memorandum of understanding with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons on Wednesday committing to “specialist medical training in a safe environment”.

The agreement comes after the college released the findings of an independent survey of more than 3500 surgeons in 2016 revealing a “toxic culture".

Surgical registrars Yit Leang and Gaushi Sivarajah welcomed the memorandum and described Barwon Health as a safe place to work.

“I think my supervisors do a good job making sure we’re not bullied or bullying somebody,” he said.

Dr Sivarajah said the memorandum gave surgery trainees “a pathway to go down” if they felt uncomfortable, harassed or bullied.

“Having a process means people can come forward anonymously and feel more comfortable about speaking up and knowing something will be done about it.

“In the past it would be very easy to tell someone it’s happening, but there was no official way of following up.”

Barwon Health board chair Dr John Stekelenberg said the agreement would improve patient safety and enrich the workplace culture.

“Barwon Health will also provide overall support to specialist trainees (to deliver) quality learning experiences.”

College president Phil Truskett said both groups would exchange information and take appropriate action wherever possible.

A college spokesperson refused to rule out instances of bullying at Barwon Health, but would not go into further details for privacy reasons.

lying - that was the initiation of my concerns about quality of care and bullying behaviours,” Prof Dewan told The Indy in 2015.

The Federal Government is holding back on the duplication of the Geelong line, according to the state’s Transport Minister.

Jacinta Allan said the Commonwealth owed Victoria money that was vital to duplicating the line from South Geelong to Waurn Ponds.

“The sooner Sarah Henderson and the Turnbull government give us our money, the sooner we can get to work.”

But Ms Henderson, who recently had been “campaigning very hard” by riding local trains, said Labor had failed to fund the project.

Ms Allan said the state’s $110 million Surf Coast Rail stage one would fund pre-duplication works from South Geelong to Waurn Ponds.

She said the duplication would increase services on the Geelong line, which has been plagued by overcrowding this year. But the minister declined to give timings for the actual duplication.

“Timing for the delivery of these works is dependent on the Federal Government giving us the money we are owed through the Asset Recycling Initiative.”

The State Government would fund the project as part of its $1.45 billion Regional Rail Revival using the money owed through the initiative, she said.

In a letter on Thursday, local Labor MPs John Eren, Gayle Tierney, Lisa Neville and Christine Couzens urged Ms Henderson to advocate for more federal funding.

Ms Henderson declined to promise any commitments to Geelong rail in the 2017/18 Federal Budget but said she would lobby hard.

“I’ve been lobbying everyone from the Prime Minister to the Treasurer down for Commonwealth investment in regional rail,” she said.

“I will be sweating it out on budget night.”

The federal Corangamite MP said the State Government had not committed “one dollar” of its own to rail in the Geelong region.

She said the State Government based the Regional Rail Revival on money it wasn’t entitled to.

Bands from across the state will invade Geelong streets with sound for this year’s After Dark celebrations.

The StreetSounds festival’s dozen bands were thrilled to play in Geelong After Dark for the first time, said organiser Lyndal Chambers.

“We thought Geelong is a great place for it - it’s a big city but not big enough to get lost,” she said.

Ms Chambers spoke to one of the bands after their final rehearsal Tuesday night.

“It felt like an army going into battle,” she said.

“Everyone was geared up and good to go.”

The people behind the festival have “raised” a dozen street bands since starting their philanthropically-funded community project in 2015.

The bands will play on the streets of Geelong Friday evening and will head to Pakington Street Saturday for a morning of skill-sharing workshops.

The musicians hail from as far away Inverloch, Morwell and Kyneton, and will bring with them a “heady mix” of horns, accordions and panflutes.

The festival will also include acts from Clonard College and Tate Street Primary School.

The StreetSounds festival is a fitting addition to this year’s After Dark, themed ‘The Sound of Light’.

This year’s Geelong After Dark will be the biggest yet, with 370 artists and 83 activities to discover throughout the CBD from 6pm to 10pm Friday night, organisers said.

City arts and culture manager Kaz Paton said the response from artists and participants this year was “mind-blowing”.

After Dark had grown each year since its inception in 2014, with 15,000 people enjoying the work of more than 270 artists in 2016, she said.

Ms Paton encouraged children to join in The Amazing Arts Adventure, an interactive journey of discovery through central Geelong.

Another highlight will be The Storytelling Machine, an interactive media artwork that instantly transforms the public’s drawings into animated characters. Geelong After Dark is a multi-award winning annual event organised by the City of Greater Geelong with creative production by Diversitat.

No ‘budget’ for convention centre Political and civic figures have attacked the State Government’s failure to provide funding for a Geelong convention centre in this week’s budget.

Opposition MPs and former premier Jeff Kennett slammed the lack of commitment to the city’s top priority project.

State-appointed council administrator Kathy Alexander and G21 chief Elaine Carbines also weighed in, respectively labelling the funding failure a setback and a “major disappointment”.

Any funding commitment will now wait until at least 2018, election year in Victoria.

Last year Premier Daniel Andrews said the “time for talk” was over.

“We’re getting the crucially needed planning and business case done so we can consider it

ahead of the next budget,” Mr Andrews said.

But after this week’s draft budget failed to include funding, Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford said the government still had to “get the project right”.

The budget snub was widely condemned.

“Earlier this year, the Andrew Government said the centre would be considered for funding.

Clearly, it was not considered important enough,” Upper House MP Simon Ramsay told parliament.

“This convention centre is not a political toy.

It is a desperately needed facility that is required right now.

“Geelong is leaking opportunities to other towns and cities, and that represents lost jobs and growth.”

Mr Kennett lambasted the funding flop on Twitter.

“No funding in Vic Budget for Geelong Contention Centre. The one proposal that had universal support for economic activity and jobs,” Mr Kennett posted.

Dr Alexander, the chair of Geelong’s council administrators, expressed disappointment.

“Strong communities deal with setbacks. I’m sure Geelong will do just that,” she told the Indy.

Ms Carbines, who leads the region’s councils alliance body, was disappointed “particularly given our long-established need, (the centre’s) forecast economic impact and the assurances (that) have been coming from government.

“We need it to happen, and I’m confident it

will, but the business case is long overdue and way past the deadline the government set itself.”

Geelong has been pushing for a convention centre since the 1950s.

The current bid dates back a decade but last year the Indy revealed confusion among local stakeholders on who should lead the proposal.

The lack of leadership emerged after the Indy revealed the government had failed to contact Deakin University about its waterfront car park, the preferred site for the convention centre.

A month later the government confirmed the car park as the proposed site, with the centre costed at $350 million.

Baritone Helen Booth said the live show and rehearsal would be the perfect opportunity for the ladies to practise their “showmanship”.

A wild month for freakish weather UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail April 2017 delivered two extreme weather events to Geelong.

Both were classed as severe storms and both involved high rainfall, flash flooding, thunder, lightning and strong south-westerly winds.

In fact, the month’s rain total of 151mm resulted in Geelong recording its second highest figure for April.

Weather enthusiasts would have to go all the way back to 1871 to find a wetter April in Geelong.

The first big event spanned 8 and 9 April when almost 60mm fell across Geelong. Some localities received much more, including 107mm at Ocean Grove and 106mm at Drysdale.

April when over 50mm fell in a violent storm across the urban area.

The whole region recorded well-above monthly average rain totals. Urban Geelong was 380 per cent above the April average of 39.8mm.

Despite the downpours, April 2017 was also warmer than average.

Temperatures averaged 20.5C for maximums and 11C for minimums, giving April a mean of 15.8C. The result was .7C above the monthly mean of 15.1C. The month’s top temperature was 29.9 C on 8 April, with the lowest overnight falling to 6.5C 10 days later.

Along with the two severe storms and damaging flash flooding, the month also delivered hail days on 24 and 26 April. Three thunder and lightning days were recorded on 8, 9 and 24 April.

The month had three strong wind days, with the strongest gust hitting 83km/h on 9 April.

Cannabis pleas for pain ‘to end’

Charity laced with the glamour girls Diamonds were a ‘Girl’s Best Friend’ for the 90 women at Geelong Day View Club’s ninth anniversary celebration in East Geelong Monday.

The women embraced the theme, dressed in their finest and adorned with glamorous glitter, to raise money for disadvantaged children.

The luncheon raised more than $1000 for the Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, the group’s president Judith Worland said.

“We have the firm view that the best way to break the cycle of disadvantage is through advancing the education opportunities of children.”

Earlier this year The Indy spoke to Norlane single father-of-father David Irvine, whose family is one of many in Geelong benefitting from the program.

“I want them to have an equal education to everyone else,” he told The Indy in January. “It’s what drives my day-to-day life.”

The Learning for Life program supports 8000 students in Victoria and 34,000 primary and secondary students across Australia.

“It has resulted in higher school attendance rates, increased opportunities of children to complete secondary education and advancement into tertiary learning and employment,” Ms Worland said.

Guest speaker and Geelong radio presenter Roxy Bennett, joined women from View clubs from across the region revelling in the flamboyant theme at the Karingal Hub.

Tony Ansett will “never know” if medicinal cannabis could have helped his wife, who died of breast cancer in 2011.

“It might have helped her manage the pain better,” he told The Indy Monday. “I guess we’ll never know.”

The former councillor will campaign for medicinal cannabis for people with terminal illnesses and chronic pain when he runs for council later this year.

“I can’t understand for the life of me why it isn’t already available,” he said. “There’s people out there suffering acute pain.”

Mr Ansett urged the Victorian Government to expand medicinal cannabis trials to include people with cancer.

“I think it needs to happen and it needs to happen real fast,” he said.

“I had to go through a tragedy to understand that.

“But what they’re doing (so far) is positive and they’ve got to be congratulated.”

In February the State harvested its first crop for trials on children severe epilepsy. But Mr Ansett said it needed to increase production “straightaway” to expand its use.

“I can’t imagine it taking a long time to grow.”

Mr Ansett’s late wife Anna battled breast cancer for three years before dying in 2011.

“The pain that you see your loved one go through is massive,” he said. “It’s a long time for the family and everyone to go through the fight.”

Anna took Oxycodone, a powerful opiate painkiller, during her treatment, but Mr Ansett believed medicinal cannabis could have improved her last months.

“Everything’s worth a try,” he said.

“You hope they’ll get better - you pray for that every second of every day.

Mr Ansett said he would lobby governments “every chance I get”.

“I hope what I’m telling you can help someone else. You do get a lot of chances in local government to speak to the State.”

There is evidence medicinal cannabis can relieve nausea in patients undergoing chemotherapy and treat moderate to severe pain, according to Cancer Council Australia.

But the council also notes there is no evidence yet it can treat the actual cancer.

State Government has flagged expanding the availability of medicinal cannabis into areas like palliative care when it grows additional crops.

It will expand the usage on the advise of its Independent Medical Advisory Committee and the Victorian Law Reform Commission.

Barwon Health’s new CEO resigns Barwon Health chief executive officer (CEO) Professor Belinda Moyes has resigned after 10 months in the job.

“This has not been an easy decision,“ Prof Moyes said in a statement to Barwon Health’s employees. “I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Barwon Health.“ “I know I can rely on you all ... to give the new CEO all your support to ensure Barwon Health is the very best health service in the state. Prof Moyes joined Barwon Health in July last year, turning a $13.8 million deficit into an expected break-even budget, Dr Stekelenberg said.

A Barwon Health spokesperson said Prof Moyes left of her own accord and that the “sudden resignation” was due to the department wanting her to start as soon as possible.

By Luke Voogt Former Geelong champion boxer Mick O’Malley has met hero Manny Pacquiao ahead of the Filipino legend’s fight with Australian Jeff Horn.

“He seemed like quite a genuine guy to be honest,” O’Malley told The Indy.

“What he’s been able to accomplish is amazing - he’s just a phenomenal athlete and phenomenal boxer.”

The Commonwealth champion spoke to Pacquiao and Horn, as the two met in Melbourne ahead of the “biggest fight in Australian history”.

“Pacquiao really seemed passionate about the sport and delivering a good fight,” O’Malley said.

“He was taking the fight seriously - the reason he chose Jeff Horn is he thought it was going to be an action-packed fight for the fans.”

O’Malley was hard-pressed to pick a winner for 2 July’s Battle of Brisbane.

“My head says Pacquiao and my heart says Horn,” he said. “A lot of people say it’s going to be whitewash.”

“I just hope everyone in Australia gets behind Jeff Horn - he’s got a bigger chance than most people think.”

But O’Malley did have one tip for the bout between the “hard-punching” boxers: “It’s just a matter of who knocks out who. It’s hard to see it going the distance.“ The two boxers showed “extreme respect” for each other during the event, O’Malley said.

“They’re two true gentleman of the sport.

Horn is a credit to the sport, to be honest.”

O’Malley said Pacquiao’s younger opponent had the “focus and drive” to beat the only eightdivision world champion in history.

“There’s absolutely no way Jeff Horn is going to underestimate Manny, but there is the possibility Pacquiao could underestimate Horn.”

Letters Target spending at inequality City of Greater Geelong administrators chair Dr Kathy Alexander is absolutely correct that council spending has to be targeted at the parts of our city that need it most (Geelong Indy, 28 April).

Inequality is a huge problem in Geelong, so it was encouraging to read that council proposed to spend an additional $8 million in disadvantaged areas.

Inequality is a troubling issue for contemporary Australian society, so it would be wonderful if Dr Alexander’s state and federal counterparts heeded her insightful thinking. This could lead to the prioritising of spending in areas such as health, education, housing and employment for those who need it most urgently. It would also mean immediately increasing the woefully inadequate Newstart fortnightly allowance for single parents and the unemployed.

It is vitally important to the well-being of our city and nation that every person has the food, housing, health care and income required to be able to properly meet their daily needs. That’s a big challenge but one a decent society must strive to achieve.

Save our library City of Greater Geelong’s interim council has decided to close Chilwell Library on 30 June without community consultation. This delightful community meeting place has been serving young and old alike in Newtown for nearly 60 years, providing a place to sit in the sun and read the paper, access the internet, have a friendly chat, bring children for storytime, and to borrow books and audio resources, all within walking distance of their homes. In doing so it meets several goals of the City’s own municipal health plan pertaining to social connectedness and physical activity. It does not compete with the magnificent new city facilities, nor does it try to. It serves a completely different and highly valued purpose for local residents in a growing population, many of whom are elderly, without transport or without internet access. Demand has to be increased to get more people buying. The government comes up with some brilliant schemes. It gives first-home buyers $10,000, and reduced stamp duty, resulting in more people in the market and prices going up. The government allows investors to buy properties to rent out and claim any loss against other income. Prices go up again. Self-managed superannuation funds are allowed to buy investment properties and people are allowed to use their super to buy homes. Prices go up yet again. Prices are back where they were. The young can’t afford to buy and rents are skyrocketing, so the government comes up with some brilliant schemes. You know the rest.

Welcome to South Australia I don’t share the enthusiasm of Vicky Grosser (Letters, 28 April) for wind farms because they are very costly, highly inefficient and unsuitable for baseload power.

A coal-fired power plant has a life of around 60 years, a wind turbine about 20. At the end of a wind plant’s lifetime vast amounts of money are needed to build a new one. All the best options to replace coal have been taken off the table including fracking, natural gas, hydro, clean coal and nuclear. We are left with the worst two options: wind and solar.

Battery storage has prohibitive costs, a short capacity, and as yet cannot meet the needs of our expanding state in times of emergency.

The US is energy sufficient thanks to fracking and natural gas, yet short-sighted, naïve politicians are determined to turn Victoria into another failed green experiment like South Australia.

Spend fine cash on police After previously writing on policing problems in Geelong’s mall, I recently needed police assistance.

When a police van appeared the officers told me they were the only vehicle patrol for the night, again at a time when increased criminal activity was of great community concern.

Now a Leopold supermarket is on the verge of becoming uninsurable after multiple burglaries and break-ins. The owner has installed 16 security cameras to no great effect.

How police, council and State Government can advocate security cameras as a viable deterrent is thus completely discredited. The solution is more cops on the beat and more cars on the road, bailing up anyone driving around in the middle of the night.

If Police Minister Lisa Neville is happy to have police and the sheriff pulling people up for unpaid fines, then she should be just as happy to spend the millions of dollars on a 24-hour presence on Geelong roads, which would amounts to more than one car on any given night for a city of almost a 250,000 rate and tax-paying people.

MIND YOURSELF: Hypnotist Rohan 'Bizarre' Gazzard will perform for the homeless in Geelong.

By Luke Voogt Hypnotist Rohan ‘Bizarre’ Gazzard and comedian Adam ‘Chicken’ Palmer will join forces to help the homeless to sleep warmer this winter.

“I think it’s a really good cause,” Gazzard told The Indy.

During a corporate gig Gazzard met Ocean Grove’s Steve Neville, who has provided 600 portable beds for the homeless since May 2016.

“He was playing guitar during the breaks,” he said. “I told Steve I’d get behind it.”

Gazzard looked forward to getting locals “eating ice cream that doesn’t exist” or convincing “men they are giving birth” at Geeong Darts Club, Corio, on 7 May. “Everything I say becomes their reality,” he said.

The hypnotic comedian normally gets up to a dozen volunteers at his shows, he said.

“It’s amazing once people see it live - we get them up and dancing.There’s an urban myth that only certain people can be hypnotised - I totally disagree with that.”

Gazzard’s “25,000” scalps included AFL players, Dave O’Neil, NAB analysts and “one the most intelligent minds in Australia” Shaun Micallef.

He convinced the former lawyer and comedian the number four didn’t exist in a backroom studio.

But while Micallef couldn’t count to four or remember the numeral on air, he had an ingenious solution.

“He was able to spell the word - as in F O R,” Gazzard said.

“For me it was incredible he was able to think outside of the square like that.”

Steve Neville hoped the show would give his portable bed project the “spark” it needed ahead of

winter, with hundreds of people sleeping rough in Geelong.

“Things have slowed down pretty recently,” said Neville, who was once homeless himself.

“When I started it was sort of a flavour of the month. It was a new charity and nobody had ever done something like it before.”

Neville said delivering the portable beds to the homeless sometimes brought them to tears.

“The connection I get with them when I do it just makes it worthwhile.”

As well as preventing people from sleeping on the cold earth, the beds prevented sickness and ambulance callouts, he said.

“That saves the taxpayer thousands.”

Neville hoped to purchase a van to deliver new clothes and beds to the homeless and, eventually, a portable shower.

He said this would help them get back on their feet and prepare for job interviews.

“If your clothes are dirty and your hair is ratty, how are you meant to go anywhere? I’ve got a friend who wants to do haircuts too.”

Neville was homeless from age 16 and became addicted to heroin.

But two years in jail in 2002, for non-violent thefts, helped him beat his addiction and turn his life around.

He created the project to help others like himself.

“I could not go through all I’ve gone through without doing something like this,” he said.

Can’t beat Shannon’s pub show Shannon Noll will return to Geelong with his new single “Southern Sky” next week.

‘Nollsie’ was fresh off filming the track’s film clip in Newcastle and NSW’s Hunter Valley with his dog Matilda last month.

But nothing beats getting back to the pub for a live show, he said.

“It’s the live set-up that separates the really good singers from someone who’s really good on a computer. It separates the men from the boys.”

His return to the Gateway Hotel next Thursday (11 May) will be his third stop on his latest tour, which kicked off today in Sydney.

Last year Noll performed across the country alongside Australia’s biggest names including John Farnham, Jon Stevens, James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite and Keith Urban.

This time the inaugural Australian Idol runner-up has hit the road alone. He will perform at more than 35 shows from Cairns to Perth until November.

Noll grew up to the sounds of John Williamson, a country singer who, like him, grew up on a farm.

“You can hear it in his lyrics,” he said. “You know he had to be living that life, or he wouldn’t have known those intricacies.”

The former farmhand shot to fame in 2003 after winning Idol and is perhaps best-known for his reboot of Moving Pictures’ classic What About Me? The cover went to number one on the ARIA charts and Noll enjoyed similar success with his own songs Drive, Lift and Shine.

For Noll, songwriting is about connecting with a simple message.

“I tell it straight up and down when I’m writing songs,” he said. “I’m not the sort of person who’ll write something that means 15 things to 15 different people.”

Voice ‘old Vegas’ tribute

Suck it up, with Dracula on stage

A critically-acclaimed Australian adaptation of Dracula will swoop into Geelong next month for city’s season of theatre.

Queensland theatre company Shake and Stir recreated the gothic-horror classic as a play, which promoters described as twisted and tortured as Bram Stoker’s original novel.

The play, directed by Michael Futcher, tells the story of young lawyer Jonathan Harker as he visits Castle Dracula deep within the Carpathian Mountains and meets his mysterious host.

Trapped within the castle walls, Jonathan discovers that Dracula wants more than his presence at the dinner table - he might also be main course.

Leaving Jonathan for dead and his castle, Dracula travels to London on a quest for seduction, love and, above all, blood.

The play features the acting talents of Ross Balbuziente, Michael Wahr (Othello, Hamlet), Adele Querol (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead) and David Whitney (My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, 1984, Rock of Ages).

Artistic directors Nelle Lee and Nick Skubij helped adapt the novel to stage.

The play gained five Matilda Award (QLD Theatre) nominations including Best Main Stage Production in 2015.

Dracula runs at Geelong Performing Arts Centre from 18 to 20 May.

Craig hoped to squeeze in some song-writing on his latest tour, which was scheduled to start at Crown Casino Friday.

“I’m writing a lot now,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be coming up with new music in the not too distance future.”

The young Melbourne man who amazed television audiences around Australia will pay homage to the King of Vegas in Geelong next weekend.

Harrison Craig, the 2013 winner of The Voice, looked forward to relaxing with family friends in Ocean Grove, and fellow ex-contestant Imogen Brough.

“I’ve got some great friends down there,“ he said. “They’ve been really big supporters of mine.”

The 22-year-old will perform the music of his childhood from his latest album, in tribute to “old Vegas“.

“I grew up with a lot of Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Elvis and Tom Jones,” he told The Indy during rehearsals last Friday.

“These guys created a style and turned it into a timeless genre. The way the songs were written, directed and orchestrated ... Nothing was done in a small way.”

But there will be no big band for this concert just a piano and the voice that stunned the nation.

“It’s very raw and acoustic,” he said.

Craig has had hits of his own since winning the reality TV contest.

His debut album ‘More Than A Dream’ went platinum, while second record ‘L.O.V.E’ remained in the top 10 charts on the ARIA charts for six consecutive weeks.

“The Voice was a great launch pad for me. But a career is a lot bigger than that.”

His TV mentor Seal went the extra yard following the show, taking Craig to perform at the wedding of a billionaire in the Caribbean.

“He’s family orientated,” he said.“He’s given me a lot of experience in terms of travelling and performing.”

Craig has had a mild stutter since he was a child, but it never affected his singing.

“I started to sing when I was about four or

Geelong’s Sweethearts will rock the Captain’s Room at Kardinia Park this month in their quest to tour Europe.

The ever-youthful band was busy raising money to perform at jazz and soul festivals in Italy, Switzerland and France, said musical director Michael Fitzgerald.

“It’s a really rewarding experience for the girls that get over there.”

The audition-based band has played out of Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College for 28 years.

“Each year the line-up changes,” Michael said.

“Some even come from as far as Melbourne and Colac to be part of the band.

“We can only take the best to ensure our performances are high standard.”

Michael said it was remarkable to see the girls develop their performance technique and grow in confidence.

VOLUNTEER WEEK Caring is the only ‘cost’ that counts More than 80 Geelong carers generously volunteer their time to foster children through MacKillop Family Services.

“We have some incredible people,” MacKillop’s Anna Masci said.

But with rising numbers of children coming into care, MacKillop needs more carers willing to welcome a child into their lives.

“Children and young people of all ages may need foster care at some point in their lives,” Anna said.

“Some need care for just one night and others require long-term carers.”

Foster carers are able to specify the length and type of care they provide. They can rent or own their own home, study, work or be retired and be married, in a relationship or single.

“Foster carers have varied backgrounds,” Anna said.

“However, their common feature is they care about children and young people and are able to

During National Volunteer Week (8-14 May 2017) we are pausing to say thank you for all the good our volunteers bring to the world.

In just a year, Barwon Health volunteers donated 91,200 hours to offer direct support for 298,700 patients.

Barwon Health Foundation and Volunteer Services Deputy Executive Director Zoe Waters said she was proud to be part of an organisation receiving such an outpouring of support from its community.

“There aren’t many areas of Barwon Health where volunteers don’t contribute, from maternity to palliative services, and everything in between,” Ms Waters said.

“Our vision at Barwon Health is to work with the community to build world class standards of care, and that wouldn’t be possible without the contribution we receive through volunteering.

“During National Volunteer Week, we are so proud to say a heartfelt thank-you for all the work our volunteers do to bring a smile to those going through a difficult time or to give comfort to those who are lonely.

“These are the extra levels of support volunteers provide.”

Ms Waters said Barwon Health actively advertised the need for more volunteers across the organisation in 2012, which brought the average volunteer age from 76 to 42.

“We were so grateful with the generosity of Geelong, allowing us to both double the amount of people volunteering their time and encourage younger people to come on board as part of that public appeal,” she said.

Auctioneer’s at top of her game Real estate agent Michelle Winkle has climbed to the top of her industry through sheer perseverance and hard work.

“I’m not about just getting it sold straight away,” she says.

“If it means taking a bit more time to get it sold at a higher price, I will spend that time doing it.

“I’ve been through some really hard times - so I understand that every single cent makes a difference. That extra $500, or even $100, can make a big difference.”

When Michelle started as an agent at age 29, she was a single mother of two with “not much hope or money in the bank”.

“I was quite lost, and I didn’t have any financial security - I’d just left a bad relationship,” she says.

“I decided I’d stop waiting for someone to save me and save myself. It was about showing my kids that they could do anything and achieve their dreams.”

Michelle remembers struggling in the early days.

“For two years, I was working 24/7 with little result,” she says.

“But I didn’t get in it to chase the money - I got in it to chase success. I sold a pub once, and a farm, which is very different to selling a house.”

She remembers visiting the eventual buyer for that farm - another farmer down the road.

He had purportedly lost interest, but Michelle slogged across his property on a cold winter’s day to find out for sure.

“I actually walked out into his muddy paddock in heels, which was ridiculous,” she said.

“But taking those extra steps got the property sold to that farmer down the road. If you don’t

take risks you’ll always wonder.

“Sometimes, it’s just about thinking outside the square. It was all about getting that one good testimony.”

Her persistence would pay off: now 95 per cent of her sales are referral-based.

“Which is what I dreamed of,” she says.

A decade later, Michelle has won recognition as the best female agent in Victoria and the third best in Australia with a major real estate company.

But she says her first award in 2008 (Personal Assistant of the Year) was her most memorable.

“I never in wildest dreams imagined I would get up on the stage - I just thought the awards were for special people.”

She still remembers her first sale, and 10 years later, she’s selling a home for them again.

“I was a single mum who had no hope, and they trusted me to sell their house,” she says. “I don’t think anyone else wanted so badly to get that sale right.”

“It’s an honour to work for them again.”

Michelle's career includes selling 127 homes in a 12 -month stint, which confirmed her as a top performer in the Geelong.

She says she has been lucky to have learnt from the best including Hayeswinckle managing director, Daniel Hayes.

Michelle has an almost perfect rating on Rate My Agent, with a number of glowing reviews.

“Michelle has wonderful enthusiasm and worked very hard to achieve an excellent outcome,” one review reads. “Most of all we appreciated Michelle’s real honesty.”

Cats to avenge big loss The Cats will be hungry to “rectify” Sunday’s 29-point loss to Collingwood after a “thorough review” this week, midfielder Mitch Duncan has said.

“The mindset’s a little bit different, you get in there and you want to work - probably - a little bit harder because you’ve had that loss.”

Duncan had yet another stand out performance collecting 27 disposals and kicking a goal, as Cats superstar duo ‘Dangerwood’ failed to fire.

The tough Joel Selwood struggled against a hard Levi Greenwood tag and fellow star Patrick Dangerfield was unsually quiet with 21 disposals.

Geelong has drawn heavy criticism again for over-reliance on the ‘Dangerwood’ combination throughout the year.

“When we win, it’s Dangerwood, when we lose its Dangerwood,” Duncan said.

But the young midfielder said it was up to Geelong’s other midfielders “protect Selwood” to allow the duo to perform at their best.

Geelong’s whole midfield will have to lift as

they battle former Cat and Gold Coast superstar Gary Ablett next week at Metricon Stadium.

Duncan said the key would be “(winning) the ball first” to deny Ablett possession.

“I might have to give him a couple in the ribs,” he joked.

Meanwhile, scans have confirmed Brandan Parfitt has suffered a high-grade hamstring strain which will rule him out for between eight to 10 weeks.

Distraught Cats fans watched the NAB Rising Star pull up in agony after sprinting towards a loose ball in the final quarter.

“Brandan’s injury is disappointing, particularly after such a promising start to his first year at the club,” Geelong’s general manager of Football Steve Hocking said.

Suns defender Steven May, who was set to return from injury, has given his team a big chance against the Cats this weekend.

“I genuinely think we’re a big chance,” he told the Courier Mail.

The Suns will likely try to limit it Selwood’s effectiveness by mimicking Greenwood’s tag.

“They were undefeated and everyone thought they were flying, but to see the way Collingwood were able to pick them apart gives us confidence,’’ May said.

“We have missed two close ones, we have to win and we have to win now."

The Cats announced they had resigned coach Chris Scott before the loss on Sunday.

Free agent Daniel Menzel said this week he would be happy to sign a one-year contract, which he had done since making his remarkable comeback.

“I would be comfortable with another oneyear deal," the 25-year-old forward told K-Rock.

“I think it is important to back yourself in these situations, and I don’t have any issues about doing an ACL again.”

The Cats were less efficient inside 50 without Menzel Sunday.

Warriors on guard as dented knights seek quick wins

The Knights have had a slump in form after bordering the top six for most of the early stages of the season and they now sit third last.

Coming off a 2-1 loss to cross town rival Green Gully, the Knights will be stinging considering they led with seven minutes to go.

North Geelong picked itself up, though, and eventually on 35 minutes it levelled the score when former Warrior Michael Grgic failed to clear an inbound ball which Matt Thorne was on hand to sneak into goal.

However, the lead didn’t last long.

Just two minutes later a speculative long ball was overrun by Bobby Vidanoski and fell to Caleb Mikulic who beat Darren Lewis in a one-on-one at the top of the box before scuffing his shot to send Zilic the wrong way initially and beating him on the inside post.

Anglers had a taste of winter-like conditions on Corio Bay over the past week, but braving the cold paid off as pinkie snapper took soft plastics right along Geelong’s waterfront.

Land-based anglers also caught pinkies at St Helens, while the entrance to the grammar school lagoon produced flathead, pinkies, Australian salmon along with the odd bream.

Squid dominated reports from Clifton Springs, with few big specimens but baglimit captures taken in quick time. Small 2.5-sized jigs in the colourations worked a treat.

Gummy sharks were a viable target across the Bellarine Peninsula, with water of 12m or more productive.

St Leonards remained the peninsula’s whiting capital. Bag-limit captures were regularly achieved on pippie and tenderised squid baits.

Queenscliff Harbour provided reasonable fishing for silver trevally on bait and lure. Land-based anglers also captured the odd whiting fishing the harbour entrance.

Surf Coast beaches produced salmon to just over 2kg on bluebait and lures. Bancoora Beach was a standout, while rock platforms either side of Lorne also fished well on the run-in tide.

The recent flush of Surf Coast estuaries combined with large tides to offer good bream fishing. Zman Grubz rigged on light jig heads got the job done, as did fresh live baits.

Portland had school tuna again on the chew. Trolling skirted lures around birds working bait helped anglers catch fish reaching 20kg.

Gone Fishing Charters’ Chris Vasilevski again guided his clients onto tuna out from Portland, where skirted Pakula lures worked well.

Big rains paid off for freshwater anglers, with most lakes producing the goods.

Stoney Creek continued fishing well for anglers who cast lures to catch brown trout to just over 1kg along with redfin to 40cm.

Fly anglers were also successful, with brown nymphs catching brown and rainbow trout.

Lake Purrumbete again produced huge Chinook salmon along with some trophy brown trout. Trolling Tassie Devils and hard-body lures like Daiwa Double Clutches along the east bank at first light was particularly effective.

Next door, Lake Bullen Merri again had numerous Chinook salmon to 1kg along with rainbow trout of the same size for anglers fishing bluebait allowed to drift slowly down a berley trail.

Next week should provide opportunities to fish for whiting and squid over at the grass beds at Queenscliff, while spinning Surf Coast beaches for salmon should also be worthwhile. Freshwater fishos could head to Lake Bullen Merri for some fastpaced action on rainbow trout and Chinook salmon.
