CASEY mayor Sam Aziz has threatened to sue Berwick Springs residents protesting on Facebook against the destruction of their estate’s gateway roundabout.

In recent days, several residents received legal letters on behalf of Cr Aziz seeking the removal of allegedly defamatory Facebook comments.

The letters demanded an apology “in wording to be agreed”, and the payment of Cr Aziz’s “reasonable” legal costs as well as “adequate” damages compensation.

Cr Aziz told Star News: “As this is the subject of a current legal process, I can’t make any comment.”

Kids in big jobs search

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The 2017 Casey Careers Expo and Try a Trade saw hundreds of high school students from Casey and Cardinia flock to the Cranbourne Racecourse on Tuesday 2 May. The expo offered high school students an opportunity to learn about and experience a range a different trades and other career paths.

Students were able to get their hands dirty with everything from tinkering with car engines to putting their muscles to the test for sports science.

The expo bought universities, TAFEs, trade specialty schools, youth services and many more together to give students the best start when choosing their future careers.

Students from Hampton Park Secondary College Sarah and Natasha said the expo was an eye-opening experience.

“There are lot of different unis and job opportunities offered to us when graduate,” Sarah said.

“I know I want to be a lawyer but the expo has helped me come up with a back-up plan.”

Natasha said he first impression of the expo was a bit overwhelming, but she quickly got into the swing of it.

“I have been going around and learning more in depth about the different jobs and carers we can go into,” she said.

Linda Rackham has been a careers guidance teacher for 15 years and said the Casey Careers Expo and Try a Trade is a great thing for students to be involved in.

Students from Kooweerup Secondary College got involved in giant jenga, one of the many activities provided by the Cardinia Youth Services team. 167884 “There are lots of expos like this but this one is unique with hands-on experiences as well,” she said.

“It gives students a good taste of a very wide range of things and they come out a lot more informed, which is fantastic.”

This event is made possible through support from the the City of Casey, Casey Cardinia Shire Council, the South East Local Learning and Employment Network, Cranbourne Racecourse and media partner, Star News Group.

Brothel owner beats jail

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A part-owner of an illegal brothel in central Narre Warren was given a somewhat happy ending at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 May. Rebecca Qu, 27, a former Chinese national seeking Australian citizenship, was spared conviction after pleading guilty to recklessly operating as an unlicensed “sex work serviceprovider” at Nature Care Massage.

According to a police summary submitted to the court, men had been offered “extras” on top of their fullbody massages at the Webb Street business district.

Female masseurs would offer to strip down and provide the service for tips of up to $60.

During a raid on the premises on 6 November 2014, police caught a masseur and a client ‘in the act’.

A defence lawyer told the court that the business had since closed; Qu was working at a dried-seafood importing business and training as a childcare worker.

Qu was single, living with her mother and a permanent resident of Australia who arrived from China in 2007, the lawyer said.

Her progress would be jeopardised if she received a conviction, the court heard.

“She wants a future in Australia with her mother,” the lawyer said.

“Her goal is to work in the childcare industry and to be a productive member of the workforce.”

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the offences aimed to deter sexual exploitation and criminal involvement in brothels.

There was also a need to ensure sex work didn’t operate in areas frequented

by children, Mr Vandersteen said.

He noted Qu’s early guilty plea, her lack of prior or subsequent convictions and that she was nine years younger than her co-accused business partner.

Qu was fined $2500 - which could be converted to about 80 hours community work, Mr Vandersteen said.

An older co-accused, who also ran the business, was fined $2500 without conviction in 2016.

Budget win for schools in State Budget

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Schools in Narre Warren have been granted multi-million-dollar upgrades but a fund for growth suburbs’ infrastructure has been slashed in the 201718 State Budget.

As part of the 2 May budget, Fountain Gate Secondary College is set to receive $4.5 million for a Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths (STEM) centre.

And a $5.02 million performing arts centre has been announced for Narre Warren South P-12 College.

The projects are expected to be completed in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Fountain Gate principal Pete Hanratty said the centre would host a program of “high-level digital literacy”, including coding, programming, robotics, nanotechnologies, 3-D printing and use of sustainable material.

Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley Couacaud said Narre Warren South P-12’s existing auditorium - with poor acoustics, no seating and no performance space - was in much need for an upgrade.

She said the new centre would allow the school to build on its Fusion and Young and Gifted programs.

“After a long campaign they will now be able to do even more in their very own performing arts centre.

“I`m just so very proud that we have achieved this fantastic result for such an extraordinary school, and I simply can’t wait to attend the very first performance.”

Meanwhile, Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the State Government delivered a “slap in the face“ to Casey residents by slashing by half the $50 million annual Growing Suburbs Fund.

According to budget papers, the infrastructure fund across 11 interface councils will be allocated $25 million a year over the next two years.

The fund is used for building or upgrading facilities in growth areas such as swimming pools, community centres and parks.

“Growth areas already face a significant challenge trying to keep pace with the infrastructure and service needs of our growing communities; a challenge which has already been made harder since the introduction of rate capping by the State Government,“ Cr Aziz said.

“This fund was introduced to assist growth councils to address the infrastructure shortfall in our communities.

“Ultimately, the gap between what the community wants and needs and what we can afford to deliver will only grow with funding like this being reduced.”

According to the State Government,

the fund was being continued as a longterm commitment.

“With 76 projects from the first two years on the go, we are continuing the Growing Suburbs Fund,“ Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said.

“It’s funny that a member of Matthew Guy’s Opposition suddenly cares about servicing outer suburbs councils, when his own leader in government failed to care or respond when this was an issue then,“ Ms Hutchins said.

Opposition local government spokesman David Davis said the growth councils faced “greatly magnified” challenges in the wake of the “big cut in this year’s budget”.

It would lead to vital and necessary local infrastructure projects being put on hold, Mr Davis said.

Municipal Association of Victoria president Cr Mary Lalios was disappointed in the cut but said the overall budget was positive.

She praised boosts to family violence measures, maternal and child health services and an extra $10 million for the Sports Infrastructure Fund.

“We are surprised the state increased its employment costs by $2 billion (10 per cent) in 2016-’17 while other sectors, including local government, were under financial constraint.”

South-Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich is in a fight for her political life, with a four-way contest to keep her prized number two spot on the Liberal Party ticket for the 2018 state election.

The shadow cabinet member is being challenged by Casey councillor Damien Rosario, former Casey mayor and Mordialloc MP Lorraine Wreford as well as Mark Barrow in the pre-selection battle.

Sitting Liberal MP Gordon RichPhillips is unopposed on the number one spot on the ticket.

In the 2014 state election, two Liberal candidates (Mr Rich-Phillips and Ms Peulich), two ALP candidates Gavin Jennings and Adem Somyurek and Greens candidate Nina Springle were elected for the upper-house region.

It means that spots lower than number two on the Liberal ticket would be battling to be voted into State Parliament.

Ms Peulich has held the seat since 2006 after serving three terms as a state MP for the lower house seat of Bentleigh.

She is the opposition’s spokeswoman for multicultural affairs and scrutiny-of-government.

candidates are unable to comment ahead of the 9 May pre-selection vote due to Liberal Party rules.

Voters in the secret ballot include Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, Liberal Party executive members, state council members and electoral-conference delegates.

On 22 April, Ms Peulich faced a mini-protest outside a Cranbourne branch meeting to select electoralconference delegates for the preselection.

Three protesters held placards against “bullying by MPs” and shared an exchange with Ms Peulich as she arrived to the meeting.

One of them was Judy Davis, a long-time Liberal member who says she quit the party because of “Inga”.

Ms Davis said she was troubled

by Ms Peulich’s lack of support for fellow Liberal candidates Geoff Ablett and Amanda Stapledon during the 2014 state election.

In 2015, Cranbourne branch member Prasad Phillip made public allegations against Ms Peulich, which spilled into protests by Liberal members and legal action as well as into local, state and national newspapers.

Last year, Mr Phillip withdrew his allegations in an out-of-court settlement.

Grass not always greener

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The footy oval at Barry Simon reserve, Endeavour Hills certainly looks a picture.

With its new goalposts, light towers and electronic scoreboard, the immaculately-turfed home of the proud Endeavour Hills Falcons was recently selected to host junior level finals.

But look in the clubrooms and you’ll find the facilities are well off the pace with the times and the booming membership.

In a way, the Falcons are a victim of their own popularity - and an example of the ageing 30 to 40-year-old sports facilities in Casey’s north.

The compact change rooms were only built for two Mossgiel Park junior football sides about 30 years ago.

Now the club juggles a crammed seven-day timetable to squeeze in Auskick players and eight senior and junior, men’s and women’s sides - and their opponents - for training and game days.

Club seniors president Rex Ashenden says an extension is desperately required, so the canteen and social areas can be separated from the changerooms.

Home and away changing areas are separated by a mere sliding screen, and properly-segregated male and female change rooms are required.

Mr Byrne said “sub-standard” facilities in Casey’s established northern suburbs shouldn’t be ignored, despite the demands of new estates.

“A lot of people live in these parts. They have entitlements,” Mr Byrne said.

“It’s not just local cricket and football clubs. There’s a shortage of meeting areas in general in the north of Casey.”

Cr Crestani welcomed Casey Council’s recent installation of goalposts and an electronic scoreboard, with a submission for a clubroom upgrade being considered for the upcoming 2017’18 budget.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The dream of a new synthetic soccer pitch in Endeavour Hills is closer to reality after a $502,000 State Budget announcement on 2 May. The State Government’s contribution now totals $1.02 million towards the $1.7 million project at Gleneagles Secondary College.

This announcement builds on a $500,000 allocation from the Napthine Government in 2014.

Gleneagles Secondary College principal Sue Peddlesden said the project had been eagerly awaited by soccer clubs as well as a “passionate” legion of student soccer players.

“I understand we haven’t had a new sporting facility in Endeavour Hills for quite some time.

“It’s a win for the community and a win for the school.”

The school had raised $100,000 for the project, with the remainder hoped to come from Casey Council, Ms Peddlesden said.

The pitch would replace the school’s undersized and “pretty rough” junior soccer field.

It would be open to use after school hours under a joint-use agreement between the school and Casey, Ms Peddlesden said.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said: “Gleneagles Secondary College is already a great school. This investment will make it even better.”

According to the budget papers, the project is expected to be complete by late in the 2018-’19 financial year.

She said the council - under a rate-capping regime - was “looking at all avenues” to secure state and federal capital works funding to keep up with demand.

In the bitter four-month dispute, crowds of residents have protested at the site and up to 1300 signatures have been collected on a petition against the project.

Mr Ball has accused Cr Aziz of “turning his back” on his constituents while Cr Aziz branded the residents as “brainwashed ... by a chief agitator”.

This year, Casey Council also investigated classifying Mr Ball as an “unreasonable complainant” and removed protest placards erected in the neighbourhood.

The council, backed unanimously by its councillors, has pledged the building of a comparable gateway set back from the roundabout.

Mr Ball said the latest threats had only made him more resolute, and would make Cr Aziz more unfavourable to the public.

“The fact remains council ... voted in favour to proceed with this unwarranted destruction and loss of parklands that will not benefit residents but only benefit a developer who wants access to their estate on the other side of Greaves Road.

“Threats of legal prosecution will never change or have any bearing on these facts.

“We are not going to be distracted by these mind games.”

‘Violent offender’ behind bars

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren South man - described as a “serious violent offender” - has been jailed for up to 18 months after pleading guilty to persistently breaching a full intervention order against his ex-partner and her mother.

Despite a ban on all contact, the 30-year-old sent 244 emails and electronic messages to his former partner between February and April, Dande-

nong Magistrates’ Court heard on 1 May. On 8 and 9 April, he sent 118 messages with some laced with threats to kill the ex-partner, her new partner and her mother.

He was arrested in Narre Warren South on 10 April. Having recently moved to Queensland, he told police he returned south to collect his things.

The man, with a history of ice and

cannabis use, has since been remanded in custody.

The court heard the partner was fearful of giving a formal statement to police until the man was taken into custody.

In a police interview, the man said he had been “ranting and raving” and “just letting off steam” but denied making threats to kill.

He said he’d wanted to be reunited

with their young daughter.

The man’s offending also breached an 18-month community corrections order handed down in September.

The man’s lawyer conceded jail was the only available sentence, but was mitigated by the man’s diagnosed bipolar depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder.

The man had engaged well with

Queensland mental health services and enrolled in a men’s behaviour change course, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen rejected the lawyer’s argument that the mass of messages was partly due to the accused replying to the victim.

The man was jailed for 18 months, including a longer-than-usual parole period of up to 12 months to address his “issues”.

However, Casey Council should be commended for its stand against self-injecting rooms in this municipality.

What Ms Patten doesn’t say is that safeinjecting rooms do not really deal with the underlying addiction problem. Safe-injecting rooms are about facilitating addiction habits by providing an environment where drug injections can take place, while reducing the risks of overdosing to addicts. Changing behaviour requires the use of incentives and psychology. I doubt if Ms Patten’s plan has the capacity to do this.

Moreover, I think Fiona Patten has not really considered all the available relevant international evidence on how to deal with drug addiction problems. Some Scandinavian countries, for example, have successfully used a combination of financial incentives and compulsory drug rehabilitation programs to help addicts start a new life altogether.

Incentives can have a very powerful impact on behaviour. But the only incentive provided by safe-injecting rooms in Victoria will be for addicts to keep taking drugs.

No bail for violent mum

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drunken 23-year-old mother who pleaded guilty to twice attending her Hallam boyfriend’s home while he was in bed and attacking him was refused bail.

On the first occasion, the Noble Park woman let herself in with a spare set of keys in the early hours of 23 March and accused the awoken victim of cheating on her, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

During the argument, she grabbed the man’s neck to try to throttle him and then punched him in the nose, leaving a two centimetre gash.

A friend tried to intervene in the fight until police separated the pair about 2.45am.

Police told the court on 1 May that the accused was too intoxicated to be interviewed, but said: “How can I punch a grown man (so hard) for his nose to bleed?

“Do I look that strong to you?”

The boyfriend was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment, and the accused was later served with a full intervention order to protect the victim.

On 30 April, the woman breached that order by banging

on the boyfriend’s door while he was in bed.

When he answered the door, the accused grabbed him around the throat and punched him in the face, causing a minor injury.

The woman, who had two children that no longer lived with her, then threw a brick through the complainant’s bedroom window.

She told a police interview early on 1 May that she would “kill that f***ing c***” upon her release, and there was nothing the police could do to stop her.

A defence lawyer told the court that day the accused and victim had been in a 10-month relationship that had descended into mutual physical violence over recent months.

“The facts do suggest that my client has struggled with alcohol and anger issues,” the lawyer said.

“She instructs me that the violence in their relationship is aggravated by drinking.”

The accused had plans to move to Caroline Springs for support from relatives and to remove herself from the relationship and re-unite with her children, the lawyer said.

“It is clearly a toxic relationship.”

“I wouldn’t tolerate it for a male (accused) and I won’t tolerate it for a female.

“She’s the one going around there assaulting him.

“If this was a male doing this, what do you think the outcome would be?”

Mr Vandersteen said the two incidents of attempted choking in the victim’s own home greatly escalated the risk.

The accused was fortunate to be not charged with aggravated burglary, Mr Vandersteen said.

“If she is trying to extract herself from the relationship what is she doing there in breach of an intervention order and while he was asleep?”

Mr Vandersteen ordered the woman to be remanded in custody for a community corrections assessment and sentencing the next day.

“Alcohol is clearly a problem for you ... (where) you are passing out and waking up still affected by alcohol.

“It requires you to engage in treatment and rehabilitation.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Vandals and bracing weather couldn’t dampen the turnout for Hampton Park’s Anzac Day dawn service on 25 April.

In the lead-up, vandals had trampled the memorial’s garden beds and tagged the poignant murals with graffiti at Arthur Wren Hall.

Just the day before Anzac Day, the lavender and rosemary bushes were flattened and bark mulch displaced from the site.

With the help of local businesses’ donations, volunteer made the drastic, last-minute repairs, Hampton Park Progress Association treasurer Vanassa Gerdes said.

Ms Gerdes said the vandalism showed the need for CCTV at the well-lit hall and memorial.

But at the dawn service, “the An-

zac spirit was there in spades,” she said.

A crowd of 300, including representatives from Hampton Park Cubs and Joey Scouts, Hampton Park Football Club, Navy Cadets and Dandenong RSL, huddled at the honour-board memorial outside Arthur Wren Hall.

Federal Holt MP Anthony Bryne and Casey councillor Damien Rosario were among those paying respects.

A highlight was a speech by Mackenzie Morrison, 13, on her family’s history.

Her great-great-grandfather John ‘Jack’ Reedy and great-grandfather Neville Merrigan fought in World War I and World War II respectively.

Mackenzie said the day was for saluting “our current protectors in

the armed forces” and honouring the sacrifice of those who “didn’t make it home”. “(It is) also about celebrating those that returned home and despite suffering war-inflicted physical and mental conditions, put their heart and souls into their communities in honour and on behalf of their fallen mates.”

Sgt Reedy fought and lost friends in the AIF 5th division’s 29th Battalion in the Battle of Fromelles, in which there were more than 5500 casualities in 24 hours.

He was later awarded for his bravery under heavy shell fire and yellow cross gas during the Battle of Morlancourt in 1918.

After the war, he married Dolly and started dairy farming at ‘Glen Stewart’ on Hallam Road, Hampton Park - now the site of Peppercorn

“Despite suffering ill health due to gas attacks in the war, Jack was heavily involved in school committees, fire brigade, the Masonic Lodge, the progress association and the Voluntary Defence Corp during World War II.” Mr Merrigan, who was to be John Reedy’s son-in-law, spent three-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war in Changi and working on the Thai Burma railway, Mackenzie said.

He settled with wife Edna with his own dairy farm on Hallam Road, now occupied by a child-care centre, and also “involved himself in community”.

The service, followed by a free breakfast, coffee and tea, was organised by volunteers from the Hampton Park Progress Association.

A short and “strident” Casey Council campaign has successfully shamed a state authority to clean-up a heavily graffitied rail bridge in Narre Warren.

At a council meeting on 2 May, Casey mayor Sam Aziz declared that unleashing the “dogs of war” a fortnight ago had finally roused the State Government into cleaning up the railway overpass on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road.

The council had recently received a letter confirming that rail asset authority VicTrack had engaged Metro Trains to clean up the tags by 8 May, Cr Aziz said.

“This is a great outcome for the residents of Narre Warren South and the residents of Casey as well.

“It’s a shame that we allow graffiti vandalism to fester to that extent.”

Casey councillors resolved to cease the council’s campaign to install signs at the overpass reading: “The ugly state of this railway overpass is the responsibility of the State Government.”

The council would consider reinstating the campaign “the next day” if the graffiti wasn’t cleaned by 8 May, Cr Aziz said.

The mayor said the overpass’ “disgusting state” could have been fixed in a “half-day job” but had been ignored by VicTrack despite several years of requests.

It was a gateway to the under-construction $125 million Bunjil Place, and could be seen by expected high-level visitors from China, which has a zero-tolerance graffiti policy, Cr Aziz said.

As part of the paused campaign, the signs were to instruct readers to call Casey-based state MPs Luke Donnellan, Judith Graley and Jude Perera to “get it fixed”.

The council would also issue a daily tweet on its Twitter account until the matter was resolved.

In the past, VicTrack had declined to clean the overpass walls because of the potential disruption to rail services and had refused Casey’s offered solutioin to lease the walls as advertising space.

A council report on 18 April stated VicTrack had declined due to its policy of not allowing “third party assets” affixed to its railway bridges.

Plush plan for new hub

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A development plan that seeks to transform the vacant blocks and bucolic paddocks off Berwick’s Clyde Road has been released.

The Berwick Health and Education Precinct Comprehensive Development Plan applies to 122 hectares of land, some of which is occupied by Chisholm Institute, Nossal High School, Casey Hospital, St John of God Private Hospital and in the near future, Federation University.

The vision released by Victorian Planning Authority and Casey Council describes a 15-year-plan for a precinct that’s home to up to 11,000 jobs, 13,000 students, 700 hospital beds and 1100 apartments.

Its future is a mix of multistorey health clinics, education institutions, apartments, offices and small-scale retail.

Part of the plan is to improve access and the profile of Buchanan Park, as well as retain an open-space corridor and build wetlands and a network of cycle paths.

There would be improved access to Berwick station, and plans for an extra intersection on Clyde Road for the precinct’s traffic.

Separate to the plan, the VPA and Casey council are also proposing to rezone land on

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former Berwick drug addict has successfully rehabilitated at an interstate clinic due to a lack of available beds in Victoria, a court has heard.

The 26-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to a series of thefts and family violence incidents, was praised for his encouraging turnaround by Dandenong magistrate Jack Vandersteen on 1 May. From October, the former selfemployed plasterer had voluntarily gone through four months of detox and rehab in NSW. He attends Narcotics Anonymous several times a week, undergoes regular urine screens and was on a payment plan for $14,000 of unpaid fines to get his car licence back.

“He’s doing more than a (community corrections) order would require of him,” the man’s lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

His drug use had spiralled due to business problems, with the lingering effects of his father’s death when the accused was just 7.

On a raid of his family home on 31 March 2016, police found a shotgun cartridge in a safe box, a stolen passport and various stolen Eftpos, membership and fuel cards with different names in the man’s bedroom.

Police had not located the owners of the cards, the court heard.

The man had been served with a

full intervention order after several family violence incidents against his Berwick girlfriend in 2015.

In one instance, after an argument over the man’s dog being in the house, the man shattered his partner’s mobile phone, dismantled a laptop and kicked in the front door.

He violently opened a bedroom door, which struck the woman in the face and floored her.

In September, police - during an “unrelated investigation” - found the man in his girlfriend’s bedroom in breach of the full intervention order.

The man had since moved a “significant distance away” to Jacana and no longer had contact with the woman, his lawyer told the court.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man’s “excellent” frequency of attendance at Narcotics Anonymous and his strategies to avoid relapses through counselling.

Mr Vandersteen placed the man on an 18-month good behaviour bond with conviction due to the age of the offences and the man’s demonstrated rehabilitation.

“I’m not going to fine you,” he said.

“I don’t see the point of that. Fining you is a very sharp stick, especially when you’ve also got fines to work out with the Sheriff’s office.”

He ordered the man to continue attending Narcotics Anonymous and drug treatment services, and to enrol in a men’s behavioural change program.

A real life dog will take centre stage in Beaconshills College Pakenham’s latest production of The Wizard of Oz. As Dorothy’s beloved pooch Toto, Nelson is set to steal the spotlight in the upcoming musical, running from 4 to 6 May at the Lois Maghanoy Centre for the Performing Arts.

Nelson and the 70-strong cast comprising of the school’s Year 5 to 12 students will be accompanied by a live orchestra, as they bring Dorothy’s adventures in Oz to life.

Director Amara Jensen said it had been 20 years since Beaconhills first staged the show, so it was “no better time to step, once again, ‘over the rainbow’.”

JOINT EFFORT GETS THE RESULTS KR PETERS real estate agencies in Wantirna and Officer worked together to sell four new three-bedroom, architecturally-designed townhouses in Keysborough.

The homes were all developed by Monomeath and each featured unique layouts, special features and open plan living, which attracted a variety of buyers.

The agencies received great interest during a four-week campaign leading up to the Saturday 22 April auction day, with open for inspections bringing in both investors and owner-occupiers seeking property within Melbourne’s thriving market.

Auction day was well attended and three of the four townhouses sold under the hammer.

The fourth is expected to sell in coming days.

A spokesperson for the agencies said Keysborough was proving itself to be an in-demand suburb, with property values consistently rising.

The townhouse at 25 Patricia Loop, Keysborough, was to go under the hammer at noon on Saturday 29 April.

Pick, pack for at-risk youth

By Casey Neill Dandenong’s Bei Nienkel started picking, packing and despatching goods as a Work for the Dole activity.

Now the 21-year-old is a paid supervisor for Picking and Warehouse Solutions (PAWS) Fulfilment in Dandenong South.

“It’s a good experience. You get to learn new things every day because it’s never the same thing,” he said.

Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams visited the warehouse space on Wednesday 12 April.

They met the PAWS team and workers from other Whitelion social enterprises Wheelly Good Coffee and fruit2work.

PAWS recruits at-risk 16 to 25-year-olds to pick, pack and despatch orders.

Supervisors receive support from trained youth workers to help each recruit to grow and gain transferrable skills.

Whitelion CEO Mark Watt said PAWS had been in Dandenong South for three and a half years, and operated from the MarkitForce warehouse.

“They were committed to helping young people as well,” he said.

“We have homeless outreach centres in Dandenong, so we’re working with the homeless kids, and we know that work and social enterprise is fantastic for homeless kids because it really gives them a hope and a future.”

Dean Pretty, 24, used to live on the street in Melbourne.

Whitelion’s Chatterbox Bus gave him comfort and support.

“They just made me feel like someone wanted to listen, because no one ever did,” he said.

The service helped him to access rehab then linked him up with Wheelly Good Coffee.

Dean now works on the fruit2work project, packing and delivering fruit from a warehouse at the Melbourne Market in Epping.

Georgina Shaw, 17, ran away from home and got caught up with drug use.

“Dean (Pretty) was one of my closest friends through that stage,” she said.

Once he’d turned his life around, he returned and offered her a job with Wheelly Good Coffee.

Georgina was “trying to change” and jumped at the opportunity.

“Having a job, giving me something to do really, really changed my life,” she said.

Visa curb hits skills at home

Mr Noonan said Whitelion received $2.65 million through the Jobs Victoria Employment Network program to place 240 at-risk young people into work over four years.

“We do recognise that social enterprises provide a great pathway in terms of workplace inclusion and then community inclusion beyond that, and can be a pathway back to a meaningful life,” he said.

“It’s terrifically positive work that doesn’t necessarily get the recognition it deserves.”

Changes to the skilled foreign worker visa system will hurt Greater Dandenong businesses, particularly manufacturers.

This was the message from South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) and Dandenong-based law firm Macpherson Kelley.

“I came over on a 457 visa,” SEMMA executive officer Adrian Boden revealed.

The Brit was employed as the vice president of engineering for PBR, now Chassis Brakes International, in 2004.

“I was coming from a multinational, European background with brakes,” he said.

“I think I brought something to the community which I wouldn’t have been able to do if I hadn’t stayed on afterwards.”

Mr Boden said he was still seeking more information about the changes and their impacts, but “I can’t see the advantage of doing the two-year visa”.

The 457 visa previously allowed businesses to employ foreign workers for up to four years in skilled jobs where there was a shortage of Australian workers, with eligibility for Permanent Residency application after two years.

Under changes announced on Tuesday 18 April, the 457 system will be abolished and replaced with the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in March next year.

TSS will include a shortterm stream, for up to two years’ work, and a mediumterm stream, for up to four years, plus safeguards to prioritise Australian workers and more targeted occupation lists.

The medium-term stream will include a permanent residence pathway after three years.

“I think it would be incredibly negative for the businesses in this area,” Mr Boden said.

“You won’t get a skilled overseas worker relocating for two years.

“We have lots of people who need skilled workers.”

Macpherson Kelley Victorian managing principal Jamie Sturgess said the firm assisted businesses with more than one 457 visa every week.

“There’s a whole host of issues that make recruiting from overseas more difficult than recruiting locally,” he said.

“If you could have an apple in Australia, you’d be stupid if you chose the foreign apple rather than the local apple.”

Mr Sturgess said production

“Imagine if we could recruit the best production managers anywhere in the world for roles in Australia and then they teach everyone who works under them their absolute world’s best practice,” he said.

“Australia will become a better, stronger, wealthier country if we have more talent across the board.

“We should be saying to the world ‘this is the best country in the world to live in, and if you are an incredibly talented person that wants to come here and make this home for the rest of your life and contribute back to this community with your sensational skills, in a multitude of ways’ (you are welcome).

“We’re saying ‘no’, whereas I think we should be saying ‘yes’.”

In relation to manufacturing, Macpherson Kelley workplace relations principal Andrew Douglas said: “Australia is still fairly new to transformative value-added manufacturing and we just don’t have the skills base.

“We need to be able to attract the workers that will facilitate the transition like engineers, designers and others because we’re a small economy.”

Spoljaric signs on for Bloods

By Nick Creely Cranbourne premiership star and fivetime Wookey Medallist Steven Spoljaric, has defected to rival club Springvale South in a major shock to the DDCA competition.

The 40-year-old, arguably the finest player to ever don the whites in the competition’s rich history, has agreed to terms at Alex Nelson Reserve for next season.

It will become the third club that Spoljaric will represent in the DDCA, after also winning a flag with Parkfield.

Bloods’ skipper Craig Slocombe, the man responsible for enticing Spoljaric to the club, said the signing has been in the works “for a couple of weeks”.

“He’s a professional cricketer, so I’m sure it’s just a job to him, but it’s great,” he said.

Bloods’ president, Peter Lawler was thrilled with the signing, and said that the offer put in front of Spoljaric was “reasonable”.

“We’re happy - the offer was nothing over the top, but decent enough,” he said.

Lawler said they also expect Malinga Bandara to come back to the club for the 2017/18 season.

“Malinga won’t be here for the start of the season, but we would be expecting him to be here by Christmas at least at this stage,” he said.

Cranbourne president Andy Ligt, who is also a good mate with Spoljaric, said the club has been aware for about a week that he was leaving after a mutual parting of ways, but is pretty shocked at the club that picked him up.

“I’m pretty surprised where he’s gone to, to be honest, but anyway,” he said.

“We wish Spolly all the best, he’s done some great things for our club we thank him for his contribution, and for winning us grand finals.”

Ligt also confirmed that Matt Chasemore’s future at the club is still in limbo, after the 34-year-old confirmed to Star News Group a month ago that he is toying with a return to Premier Cricket.

“Discussions are still on-going we’re not exactly sure where we are headed as a club,” he said.

“We’re disappointed at how we finished last year, so we’re looking

at making changes.”

Ligt also suggested that the club would be looking to bring in fresh tal-

ent, whether that is mature players, youth or a new look coaching structure.

By Russell Bennett For many sporting clubs, simply having clubrooms to call their own can be so easily taken for granted.

But not the Casey TigerSharks Swimming Club.

They don’t have rooms to call their own - to foster a real club atmosphere to galvanise the members.

But, thanks to Berwick Mitsubishi and a host of generous local businesses, they now have a $5000 trailer and mobile barbecue they can use for vital fundraising activities.

“It’s come about through one of our parents within the club,” TigerSharks president Amanda Koukounaras said.

“We don’t have clubrooms, so to create that social feel with-

in the club we really need something to galvanise us together.

“When we have events we can take this, roll it out and just have it be that item that galvanises us together as a club.

“One of the dads in the club had a relationship with the guys at Berwick Mitsubishi. He had a chat with them, and fortunately enough for us it evolved from there.”

But the TigerSharks are adamant that their new piece of equipment will be shared throughout the local community.

“We’ll look to make it a community piece of equipment and invite other sporting clubs within the area to use it and let them know it’s there,” Amanda said.

“Sometimes I think that

sport loses its focus and loses what it actually means to the community, and sport becomes so much about how we win, when we win, and why we win as opposed to why we do it in the first place.

“This is five years in the making of trying to find a partner we can align ourselves with who could see what we were trying to do and assist in providing it.

“This is a piece of community equipment. It’s TigerSharks and it’s ours and we’re fortunate to have it, but it’s really a community piece of equipment.”

Berwick Mitsubishi graciously donated the trailer, while Ray and his team at MW Toolbox, and Dennis and Matt at Fine Line Refinishers also contributed to the project.

The United could not overcome the lowly Eagles at home on Saturday.

Just when all seemed lost, Shane Savanah made a sizzling run down the left, took on an opponent and then squared the ball for a charging Steve Vernon to score the equalising goal in front of a jubilant home crowd.

Berwick coach Gerry McDonagh was pleased with the character and fighting spirit shown by his team.

“We gave up a two goal lead early and then had to find a way to get back into the match. Nothing seemed to be falling our way but credit to the boys for not giving up and finding a way to get something out of the match,” he said.

Classy Stingers quell Cannons

DANDENONG Stingrays proved a class above the Calder Cannons on Sunday in a relatively one-sided affair at Shepley Oval.

The final margin, 38-points, was probably not a true reflection of the dominance the Rays had for three quarters, but a five-goal surge from the Cannons in the last 15 minutes of the last quarter significantly trimmed the win.

With as many as eight of their regular stars missing, including skipper Oscar Clavarino, Bailey Morrish, Mitchell Riordan and Luke Davies, it was always going to be a tough challenge even against the struggling Cannons.

But the Rays started like a house on fire, with Riley D’Arcy slamming the opening goal in the first few minutes of the match, before controlling proceedings to take a 32-point lead into the first break.

The Rays completely dominated possession, controlling the game on both the inside and outside of the contest, and punishing the faltering Cannons on turnover.

D’Arcy, who kicked three opening term goals, was a handful with his aerial presence and ability to use his athleticism.

REVIEW – ROUND 5 It seemed the momentum couldn’t possibly be halted when the Rays put two quick goals on the board to start the second, but their almost 50-point lead was slashed with a couple of late Cannon goals to reduce the margin back to 40 at the major break.

With a slight lull in the Rays’ goalkicking spree, a few strong passages in the third-quarter ensured they would take a 48-point lead with a quarter left to play.

Mitch Cotter (21 disposals), Dylan Morris (12 disposals, two goals), Hunter Clark (18 disposals) and Mason De Wit (24 disposals, 7 marks) found their share of the footy in a somewhat subdued quarter for the Rays, but the Cannons were more industrious at the contest, kicking 2.2 to the Rays 3.4.

When the Rays skipped out to a 60-point lead, it seemed 100 points was not outside the realms of possibility, but the Cannons fought admirably to gain respect on the scoreboard, and put together their most impressive 15 minutes of the game, slamming on four unanswered goals to leave them with a six-goal loss.

Among those is top-10 draft pick Bianca Jakobsson and gun forward Kirsten McLeod, who will have a major say in the side’s fortunes. What will set the AFLW players in the VFLW this season, apart from the others, is that they have had an extra three months of preparation. In the longrun, it could prove crucial.

A disappointing fade-out by the Casey Demons has resulted in a 36-point loss to Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.

Just as they did in Round 1 against Williamstown, the Demons were well and truly in the game at half-time, but were outhunted by a hungrier opposition in the third quarter.

It was a bright start to the contest with Melbourne-listed forward Dean Kent snagging a goal within the first two minutes, and when Angus Scott nailed a set-shot on the stroke of quarter time, the Demons took a slender four-point lead.

The Demons looked the goods early in the second quarter, with the impressive Bailey Fritsch booting a quick goal, before the Cats pegged them back by finding control of the football, and eventually pinched the lead with two late goals heading into half-time.

From there, the Demons’ workrate dropped off, and the Cats pounced, punishing the Dees on turnover and taking the game away in a devastating twenty-minutes.

Despite some late resistance provided by a desperate Dees’ forward group, the Cats steadied to run away with the six-goal win.

Demons coach Justin Plapp was unhappy with the intensity of his side, and refused to blame a growing injury list in the AFL for the loss.

“A lot of the things that cost us today were things the players could control,” he said.

“We’ve got players who are ready to step in and play a role when they are needed to, but I felt today in getting an even number of contributors, we were really poor.”

With Max Gawn and Jake Spencer out injured, too much was left to young ruckman Max King, who only recently came back from a long-term injury.

There were plenty of major ball-winners

for the Demons, with nine players recording 20 disposals or more.

Vice-captain Angus Scott (25 disposals, three goals) was the best of the non-AFL listed players, with Jack Trengove (29 disposals), Dean Kent (22 disposals, 1 goal) and Mitch White (24 disposals) all putting in strong cases for an AFL call-up.

But it was the returning Josh Wagner who impressed Plapp the most, with the rangy defender making a successful return from injury.

“He played with intensity, I thought his aerial stuff was very strong, he made good decisions and he’s only going to get better,” he said.

Casey now move to a 1-2 record and ninth on the ladder, and will again be on the road on Saturday with a trip to Hoppers Crossing to take on the Werribee Tigers, a team coming off an impressive 23-point win over Essendon.

In the Development League, Casey 6.13(49) lost narrowly to Sandringham 10.11(71) at Casey Fields on Sunday.

Eagles dare, down Doves

By David Nagel Reigning premier Cranbourne has regained its insatiable appetite for the contest to run away with a 26-point victory over Doveton in the SEFNL match of the day at Robinson Oval.

The Eagles were challenged heavily by the Doves for three quarters before producing their best football of this campaign kicking five goals in a stunning 12-minute burst- to bank their most important four points for the season.

The Doves had been dominant in their opening two wins and continued that form - starting impressively.

Livewire forwards Michael Henry and Nick Battle kicked the only two goals of the opening term, capitalising on the great work of ruckman Russell Gabriel and an intense brand of footy around the stoppages.

Harrison Bird had his hands full with Henry, while Alwyn Davey looked dangerous on Jordy Bertrand, but faded as the

game wore on. Henry had four shots at goal in the first term but failed to have the scoreboard impact that his brilliant play deserved.

Coach Aaron Davey moved full-forward Taylor Joyce out to centre half forward in an attempt to drag Cranbourne’s best defender Brandon Osborne out of the goal-square. Osborne kept former Carlton star Brendan Fevola goal-less when he last visited Robinson Oval in round seven last year and looked impenetrable once again.

Gabriel, Sam Raru and Henry combined for the cleanest centre clearance at the start of the second term, but it was the Eagles who took control.

Goals to Troy Tharle, whose strong hands were proving a nightmare for Matt Jameson, and others to Shaun Marusic and Keenan Hughes saw the Eagles take an eight-point lead, 3.5 to 2.3, into half time.

The tempo lifted in the second half, the Doves kicking four goals to three in the third term

to trail by a point at the final change.

Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey almost knew what was about to happen.

“We spoke at half time about paying the price, and this is where we need to dig deep and give everything,” Goosey roared.

“I know we’ve got the run in the legs, but if they get a good start don’t drop your heads.”

How prophetic those words would prove to be with the Doves taking the lead through Battle, just 18 seconds in, before the Eagles took command.

They kicked five on the trot to run away with the contest.

Jake Carosella kicked the first, converting a brilliant passage of play, before Khaled ‘Cyril’ Kandakji kicked two including a goal-of-the-year contender from directly in front of the Doveton members. Cyril brought back memories of Peter Daicos with a magnificent dribble kick from the boundary while running at full tilt.

Marusic, Osborne and Tharle were outstanding for the winners while ruckman Michael Boland fought back well in the second half after a slow start against Gabriel. Wingmen Dylan Cavalot and Aaron Bower provided plenty of run while Jayden Sullivan, Brandon Wapshott and Dillan Bass provided Osborne with support down back. Youngster Nick Darbyshire also showed clean hands at important times in the match.

Gabriel and Henry scored top marks for the Doves who will be bitterly disappointed with their last-quarter fadeout. Jameson stuck to his guns against Tharle while Mitch Woolgar had an absorbing battle with hungry Cranbourne forward Keenan Hughes.

The remaining games in SEFNL were all one-sided, Officer scoring 92-point victory over Hampton Park, Beaconsfield far too strong for Pakenham, while Narre Warren gave Tooradin a 48-point lesson at Westernport Oval. Aaron Wilson kicked five for the Magpies.

Seagulls prove their mettle

By David Nagel Tooradin has rubber stamped itself as a ridgy-didge premiership contender after surviving an epic battle with reigning premier Narre Warren at the Tooradin Rec. Reserve.

The Seagulls prevailed by four goals, 47-43, in a contest that saw no more than a goal separate the teams in the first three quarters of play.

The Seagulls have been commanding this season, winning their opening three games by 43, 17 and 15, but coach Kelly Andrews said this was far and away the most satisfying victory of all.

“We haven’t had a game where we’ve had to grind it out together and that’s going to hold our group in good stead moving forward,” Andrews said.

“We need games like this to prepare us for the tough battles ahead; it’s not realistic to be winning by 15 goals every week and still be prepared for those big games later in the season. It was really good game of netball, a really high standard and that’s great for the competition.”

Both teams had star players sitting on the sidelines with the Seagulls missing gun defender Jess Maher, due to a mix up with the scoresheet, while Magpie goaler Tayla Shannon was on crutches after sustaining a serious leg injury last week.

Neither side would concede an inch with great battles all over the court.

Narre mid-courters Leigh Taylor, Britt Mashado and Erin Clark had their hands full with Seagulls Sara Duncan, Emma Iacovou and Jess Cox, while defenders Bec Kinna and Ebony Dolan lifted when the Seagulls needed it most. Alex Maher had a steady hand, scoring 10 last-quarter goals to get her team across the line.

Tooradin’s victory overshad-

owed a remarkable contest at Robinson Reserve where Doveton produced a miracle last quarter to take a 48-46 victory over Cranbourne.

The Doves were comprehensively outplayed in the first half, trailing by six at quarter time and eight at half time before slowly working their way into the contest.

The Doves brought the margin back to six at the final break before producing a brilliant 16-8 final term to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Rahni Samason had a 12-goal last quarter against a serious defender in Tara Cecil.

Hampton Park will head into the toughest part of its season on a high after a hard-fought 43-35 victory over Officer at Starling Road.

The Redbacks, who face Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Tooradin in the next three rounds, made it two wins on the trot after a dominant third term. The Redbacks led by three at half time but rubber stamped victory with a 10-5 blitz in the third quarter.

Shannon Rennison (goal keeper) and Karli Foster (goal defence) ramped up their defensive efforts, getting the better of Kangaroos goalers Sarah Smith (goal shooter) and Sam Neil (goal attack), while Maddi Hanlen (centre) and Chloe Birch (wing attack) took control through the midcourt.

And Beaconsfield has shown no hangover from last week’s terrific victory over Narre Warren, scoring a comfortable 57-26 win over Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve.

The Eagles started and finished fast, scoring 15-6 in the opening term before finishing with an 18-6 final quarter.

Sibling rivalry is a struggle

By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Mitsubishi’s little brother SUV, the ASX, has joined siblings, the Outlander and Pajero Sport, in taking on a fresh face and more features.

In line with its big brothers, the ASX has the family features of the company’s Dynamic Shield design language with gloss black-and-chrome finish added to the new-shape front bumper and grille. A new shark fin antenna also gives the ASX a more streamlined look.

Mitsubishi’s top selling SUV in Australia, the MY17 ASX is available in two specification levels - LS and XLS - coming with the choice of two engines, a 2-litre petrol or 2.2-litre turbo-diesel two-wheel drive mated with a five-speed manual or continuously variable transmission, and all-wheel drive diesel (LS and XLS) with sixspeed automatic.

On test was the mid-range LS 2.0 petrol 2WD automatic, priced at $27,000.

The front bumper and radiator grille has been reshaped and a black and chrome finish has been added.
