“They say cancer is a journey - well I somehow don’t think so, it’s more like an uncomfortable train ride with no seats, the smell of sweaty armpits and wondering how long you will have to stand with that awful scent of body sweat wafting through in two-second intervals, not a pleasant experience that I would wish on anyone.’

The foreword of Heather Roberts’ book, titled ‘All aboard’ is a poignant metaphor and reminder of the journey that she and her family underwent when caring for her husband who was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme grade IV brain cancer.

On 22 November 2016, Kyoshi Andrew Roberts, Heather’s husband and adored teacher at Edge Martial Arts in Mount Evelyn lost a year-long battle with the brain cancer, which is aptly known in forums as ‘the terminator’.

Since then Heather and her family have created a foundation dedicated to Andrew and Heather is now close to finishing a book that she hopes will help families who may be going through the same experience.

Heather began writing the book when Andrew was diagnosed in June 2015 and said the book began as a diary used to keep a record of each day.

While the internet offers plenty of information about the rare brain cancer, the book will offer readers a perspective of what families who are facing similar situations can expect.

“You can google as much as you want, but you don’t see it from a family’s perspective,” she said.

“To people going through it, it will bring them awareness to just how quickly things can change, and just how much is involved in looking after someone like that.”

“It will hopefully help carers and families understand how they are going to feel, and what they have to see ... all my girls went through trauma of watching their dad like that,” she said.

Andrew remained at home for the last few weeks before passing, a decision made by him, Heather and their daughters.

During this time Heather cared for him and said that while it was very stressful, she would never have wanted

Rain unable to dampen spirits Weather conditions could not hamper the spirit of Anzac Day, and residents in the Dandenong Ranges came out in droves to attend dawn services and join with returned servicemen and women for traditional marches and services at local cenotaphs.

Residents lined the streets of Mount Evelyn, Monbulk, Emerald, Gembrook, Upwey-Belgrave, Ferny Creek and Cockatoo to applaud and remember the services of Australian soldiers, both past and present.

Family members proudly wore the medals of family members, men and women, who served their country in the theatres of war around the world, and Belgrave and Upwey communities came together in the early hours of the morning to pay their respects at the Upwey- Belgrave RSL for a touching dawn service.

Over the weekend just gone, local football clubs lined up for ‘The Ode’ before heading out on to the ground for the Aussie Rules Anzac Day clashes that have become an integral part of the commemoration.

At 1.20pm on 30 April, a truck driving north on Old Emerald Road, Monbulk, collided with a falling branch from an overhanging gumtree.

The branch fell onto the truck cabin, badly damaging the deflector and roof of the cabin.

The driver was unharmed.

However, upon leaving the vehicle, a limb of the branch broke from the main limb and struck him on right shoulder.

Emergency service crews attended the incident and the driver was assessed by ambulance at the scene, but no treatment was required.

CFA and SES crews cleared the branch from the roof and around the truck, and Andrew Herdman, Sergeant at Olinda Police Station, said it was fortunate no-one was injured.

“It is very fortunate that the limb struck a truck and not one of the many cars which now use the road,” Sgt Herdman said.

“The size of the limb could have had fatal consequences; however, in this case the truck sustained minor damage and the driver a sore shoulder.”

A former local CFA captain, Peter Edyvane, has warned of the increased traffic along the road and worries there may be more similar incidents in the future.

“He has been concerned about an incident of this nature for some time and is worried that this road has an increasing traffic flow due to the new sporting complex,” he said.

The truck driver was able to drive the truck to a local nursery after the branch had been cleared.

Yarra Ranges residents are being asked to put their hands up and help their communities in an emergency, by registering as a volunteer for HelpOUT, and Yarra Ranges Council is offering training.

The year-round service run by Volunteering Victoria provides an opportunity for people to register and identify their skills and availability to help disaster-affected communities.

Volunteers co-ordinated through HelpOUT assisted across the shire following the large storm in October last year.

O’Shannassy Ward Councillor, Jim Child said having more volunteers at the ready would help communities to recover quickly from disasters, such as last year’s storm.

Cr Child said recovering from a disaster could take a long time and a lot of hard work from people in the community.

Yarra Ranges Council is offering free training and support to people signing up to HelpOUT over National Volunteer Week - Monday 8 to Sunday 14 May - to help prepare them for the next emergency.

Cire Community School in Mount Evelyn is offering a new service to help mow, and clean people’s yards and gardens.

The service is part of a yearlong business-building venture run

by VCAL students at the community school and focuses on helping disadvantaged and elderly people who are unable to do their own yard work.

The service is part of a new school program that runs over four terms and culminates in students understanding what’s required to run a business, according to Ashley Kirkwood, VCAL teacher at Cire Community School.

“The first term is how to run a business, and then term two and three they run the business themselves.

“In term four they do all the paperwork and decide which charity they are going to give the money raised to,” he said.

“It gives them the skills to run their own business, how to deal with customers, phone skills ... really a taste of how a small business runs.”

The Year 10, 11 and 12 VCAL students will assist in cleaning up, removing branches, mowing and whipper-snipping around the yard.

Funds raised for firies

By Derek Schlennstedt The Kallista-Patch community has put in concerted efforts to help raise funds for their local CFA. As part of a fund-raising program at the Kallista general store, locals are invited to place fresh vegetables, nuts or fruit in a basket where residents are then able to donate any amount they want for the food.

The donations are only a small part of various fund-raising programs that the community and Kallista-Patch store run and have helped the CFA to buy, and upgrade various items on their FCV. The FCV is a forward control vehicle, and was bought with the

help of community donations late last year.

Since then ongoing fund-raisers and donations by the community have helped to get well-needed upgrades for their FCV. Peter Toender, captain at Kallista Patch CFA said the community in the area was great and that thanks to them they had been able to upgrade various items on the car.

“Every little thing helps, and the store and the community have been very enthusiastic supporters,” Captain Toender said.

“We recently got a new light bar; an older mechanical one was quite old and was degrading so we

changed it to an LED one, which is brighter and easier to see.”

Since it was bought, the FCV has undergone various changes including a new light bar, a new generator and an LED display on the back door.

These upgrades came as a result of the generous fund-raising and donations made by the Kallista-Patch store and the local community.

Liz Hoorigan co-owns the Kallista-Patch store that helps donate money by residents donating excess fruit or vegetables, which other locals can then take by donating money.

Parenting program

Could have been worse I comment in regards to Doseena Fergie’s statement, while accepting her Australia Day Award from Yarra Ranges Council (‘Mail’, 4 April).

Ms Fergie was quoted in the article as saying, “I was reluctant to say ‘yes’, because January 26th is a day I consider to be invasion day.

A day of survival for our people. Not a day of celebration”.

I suggest it was, in hindsight, a day of celebration of our Indigenous people.

My reasoning behind that comment is simple: it was totally predictable that some race of people were going to land on Australia and claim sovereignty.

When one considers the Dutch, Spanish and French all landed on Australian shores - and later on the Japanese - I consider the Aboriginal people should appreciate more the fact the English landed and were the first to claim sovereignty.

So, I ask Doseena, as I have asked other Indigenous people - without getting an answer - “What country of the aforementioned people would you have chosen over the English and the reason why?”

On reading early history, Doseena, the av-

erage age of Aboriginal people was around 35 years and they also had massive problems in tribal disputes.

The last three funerals of Aboriginal men I have attended were all over 70 years old.

Volunteers for service I have a connection to Australia that precedes my immigration in 1955.

My father and three of his brothers all volunteered for service in the army in 1914.

Their ages were 25, 23, my father 20, and the youngest 18.

The two youngest transferred from the Sherwood Foresters to the Royal Marine Light Infantry in September 1914, while the eldest remained with the Sherwood Foresters.

The two youngest brothers, one of which was my father, Sam, were at Anzac Cove with the Australians and were fortunate to survive the experience of the Gallipoli debacle.

After their transfer to the European conflict, Walter, the youngest, died at Ancre on 13 November 1916, seven days after his 21st birthday.

My father survived the war but Fred, my father’s elder brother, died on 16 November 1917 at Ypres.

Four sons went to war, only two returned.

Anyone who thinks that the death of a child, husband or wife brings ‘closure’ needs to have a re-think.

I know my father never found ‘closure’.

I know what it is to lose a child.

I know how a child is affected by the loss of a sibling.

I can’t begin to understand how my paternal grandparents and their surviving children felt in November 1918, and for the rest of their lives, but I do not believe ‘closure’ was mentioned.

Confirmation of death does not bring ‘closure’, which is a word spawned by politics!

I apologise to others who have experienced what I have experienced, for my lack of brevity, but, I don’t believe the attachment of a ‘political’ face, of any, and/or all, hues, to a document encouraging us to attend Anzac Day Memorial Services is appropriate.

I do, however, accept that the Anzac Day Memorial Services support my rejection of the use of the word ‘closure’.

Pride of panther people

By Peter Douglas The Yarra Ranges is one of the “hottest” locations in Australia right now for big cat sightings, according to a pre-eminent investigator.

After recent inquiries in Perth and Illawarra, former Australia Zoo big cat handler Vaughan King has made a beeline for the Yarra Ranges, which he will call home for a few months, to follow up on a spike in reports.

Vaughan’s efforts follow on from a young Kalorama couple who late last year reported seeing two big cats near Maroondah Reservoir, as well as two reported sightings last week in the Toolangi State Forest.

He said it was easy to envisage how big cats could not only survive, but thrive in the Yarra Ranges, where there have been numerous sightings reported since 2000.

Such cases include at Cockatoo, Montrose, Upwey, Mount Dandenong, Seville, Warburton, Yarra Junction and Healesville.

“Just according to recent activity, I’d say this is one of the biggest hotspots right now. If you go by not just what’s on my website, but word of mouth and what’s reported on internet forums,” he said.

“I firmly believe we have three species (in Australia); the leopard, jaguar and cougar.

“I’ve been through the Toolangi forest before, it’s amazing.

“And those three species, in particular two are the most adaptive. The cougar is found in deserts and jungles of South America; while the leopard is found Asia, in 75 different countries, and is very adaptive.”

During his time in the Yarra Ranges, Vaughan will take time to talk with sources, set up ‘camera traps’

and search for scratchings, footprints, carcasses or other evidence of big cat populations.

Stories of big cat sightings in the Yarra Ranges are far from a new phenomenon, with one theory existing that a Monbulk man who owned a miniature zoo about 30 years ago released his animals into the bush.

But Vaughan said he was devoting much effort to transforming the big cat legend into fact.

Vaughan first became interested in big cat research during his time at Australia Zoo, where he worked with Bengal and Sumatran tigers, and even hand-raised cubs.

“I’m certainly not the only person in Australia that’s doing this, but I’m making it my mission to prove it once and for all,” he said.

“That’s why I’m here. You’ve got to go where the sightings are and two sightings in a week is pretty damning.”

Vaughan believes completely there are big cats in Australia, and has different theories about how this may have occurred.

“One theory is they are escaped US mascots from the World War II era, when around one million US servicemen passed through Australian ports during the war,” he said.

Also, Vaughan said he’s spoken with a former circus owner “who admitted to me that they had plenty of accidents over the years”.

To help his research, Vaughan along with around six volunteers - established the group Panther People and a website, where people can both report anonymously and explore sightings.

“I take every sighting with a grain of salt. But at the same time, if someone looks me in the eye and tells me

“I believe about 30 per cent might be misidentification for feral cats. But a big feral cat only gets up to about 20 kilograms. These cats start at 60 to 70 kilograms.”

Finally, Vaughan advised if you ever encounter a big cat, just “stand your ground”.

“Don’t run; that’s the worst thing you can do. With predators, that just ignites the little instinct in their brain to start chasing,” he said.

“There’s not been a documented attack to date. But if you see one, stay calm,” he said.

Full steam ahead for the feat of feet Puffing Billy’s engine wasn’t the only thing blowing off steam in the Dandenong Ranges on Sunday 30 April, as 2213 runners took to the 13.5 km of rugged terrain to race against the historic train in the 36th annual Great Train Race.

This year’s winner was Nick Earl from Parkville, who crossed the line in 43 minutes and 10 seconds.

Nick was thrilled to win the race after coming second in 2016 to Craig Appleby.

This year their positions were reversed with Craig coming second in 43m.42s.

The first female to cross the line was Gemma Maini from Mount Eliza, who finished the race in 49m.12s.

Gemma was delighted to win after coming second place back in 2015.

Puffing Billy crossed the line in 55m.24s, which was almost one minute faster than in 2016, possibly due to the fine weather this year.

Shane Thiele from South Yarra won the Veteran Male (aged 40 and over) who ran in 48m and 50s.

Elizabeth Maguire from North Ward won the Veteran Female (aged 40 and over) who ran in 57m.58s.

By Peter Douglas There will be plenty of wellearned acknowledgements at Angliss Hospital this month.

With the International Day of Midwife to be marked on 5 May, and International Nurses Day on 12 May, it’s the ideal time to pay tribute to their great work.

Around 450 midwives are employed through Eastern Health, including at Angliss, as well as community-based teams across the Yarra Valley.

Meanwhile, 3800 nurses are employed across the organisation.

Executive director of Nursing and Midwifery A/Prof Kath Riddell said it was the perfect time to “stop, thank and acknowledge the outstanding job done by our nursing workforce”.

“Each and every one of them makes a significant and valuable contribution to the care, treatment and wellbeing of our patients,” she said.

“They also provide outstanding support to patient’s family, carer and friends.”

Though, the thanks don’t stop there, with National Volunteer Week (8 -14 May) around the corner.

Manager of Volunteer Services, Christine Ward, said volunteers made an extremely valuable contribution to Eastern Health.

“From providing transport to our patients so they can get to their appointments, to offering support in an emergency department, all volunteers make an amazing difference.”

Eastern Health has about 860 community volunteers, dedicating around 178,000 hours of service annually.

A century is a long time by any standards, and the Upwey CFA is nearing the milestone.

Only a year away, the Upwey CFA is close to 100 years of service to the community, making it the oldest fire brigade in the Dandenong Ranges.

Celebration plans are already underway for the centenary, which is to be held in February next year.

On 28 April 2017, Upwey CFA received a $5000 grant from the local community Upwey Bendigo bank to help with the celebration and the production of a historical book.

The book will include historical accounts of fires that took place in the region, and what the fire station was like 100 years ago.

Chairman of the Dandenong Ranges community banking branch John Waters said the community bank hoped to help the CFA in their preparation for their celebrations.

“The community bank represents the community, and there is not much better way to represent the community than with this donation, as we realise how important the CFA are to the town, and they’ve been here for 100 years which is incredible,” Mr Waters said.

“We used to use hand beaters and knapsacks to beat the fires with,” he said.

These days, the station has five trucks, three of which are community paid for, through fund-raising.

Plans to celebrate the centenary include a reception on 24 February 2018, a procession in conjunction with the annual billy car race festival on 25 February 2018, and an ‘open house’ fire station.

Flowing with colour Dandenong Ranges resident Bev Pergl is the latest local artist to feature at Miloko in Sassafras.

Pergl’s exhibition, titled ‘Flowing with Colour’, is a celebration of soulful painting.

She said most of her professional life had revolved around art.

“I concentrated on printmaking and etching at college, but I went on to work with acrylic paints which is more immediate,” she said.

“Then, when I was an art teacher and painting production sets at school, I realised that really I wanted to be painting for myself.”

Bev said her painting style had evolved over time.

“When I started drawing and painting, I was interpreting still life,” she said.

“My work has now moved to a different phase where I am painting from within.

I am not consciously aware of where my painting is going when I start.

“In the past, I used to start with lines and find things in the paintings, but my recent painting has become more abstract.”

Pergl uses meditation, music and chanting through her painting process, which takes her to a place of stillness.

“I usually get a sense of the mood of the painting early on,” she said.

“Every painting has its own soul; it’s own message.

“What I try and do is find the soul for that painting. I tend not to mix colour very much.

I prefer to keep it pure and intense; mixing can often result in murky colours.

I don’t use black in my paintings, because colour has frequency.”

“You would have to say that the natural environment does have some bearing on my work,” she said.

“Many images are inspired by the where I live.”

“I hope people feel joyful and uplifted by the paintings, with a curiosity about the process,” she said.

“Every painting has a soul or message.

“I would love them to connect with the message of the painting.”

The ‘Flowing with Colour’ exhibition which began on 28 April is open for viewing at Miloko until 6 June.

But in Volume 2, writer-director James Gunn wisely builds much of the conflict from the engaging personal relationships.

Volume 2 grounds its interplanetary drama with a very intimate, personal focus.

The film’s myriad of character dynamics, including Peter’s growing bond with Ego, Peter mending things with his adoptive father Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Gamora’s (Zoe

Saldana) tense relationship with her estranged homicidal sister Nebula (Karen Gillan), all share the common stage of Ego’s planet and develop gratifying themes of respect and family.

The irreverent humour is much cleverer this time around, and the visuals are stunningly rich and colourful.

The only significant flaws are the contrived opening and the somewhat indistinct action scenes.

With Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2, Marvel Studios has provided yet another sequel that surpasses the first film.

The winners in senior football: Mount Evelyn, Upwey-Tecoma, Olinda Ferny Creek, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Kinglake, Powelltown, Yarra Glen and Alexandra.

A Grade Netball Winners: Mount Evelyn, Olinda Ferny Creek, Wandin, Warburton-Millgrove, Woori Yallock, Kinglake, Powelltown, Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction.

Next week sees a top-of-the-table clash Woori Yallock and Olinda in Division 1 Football, while in Division 2 Yarra Glen and Yea will play for the Pride Cup on Sunday 7 May at Yarra Glen.

Mount Evelyn got off to a great start, kicking 4.6 to 0.2 and had a healthy lead of 28 points going into the second. Unfortunately for Emerald, Mount Evelyn had their kicking boots on in the second and kicked 8.3 to 3.3 to take a lead of 58 points into half-time. Emerald found it too hard to cover the spread of 10 goal-kickers from Mount Evelyn.

They fought back in the last, holding Mount Evelyn goalless, but their six-goal run came too late and Mount Evelyn got home by 30 points.

The lead was starting to blow out and Healesville would need to show that fighting spirit, if they were going to come back in the third. Olinda’s defence played another amazing quarter of football, holding Healesville goalless again and took a comfortable lead of 39 points into the final term. Healesville showed some fightback in the last, kicking 3.2 to 1.6, but it was just junk time goals in the end.

Accuracy in front of goal was paramount for Kinglake today and they did not disappoint. Another five-goal quarter and the lead had increased to 50 points at half-time. As much as Thornton tried, they could not penetrate the defences of Kinglake, while at the other end, Kinglake was relentless and kicked another four goals while Thornton could only manage one. Another fivegoal last quarter well and truly had the game signed, sealed and delivered.

The second quarter was an even contest, with Alexandra kicking 4.5, while Junction kicked 3.2. Alexandra were certainly doing Junction some favours and giving them every opportunity to win this game. Only 14-points down at half-time, it was game on. The third quarter made no inroads on the margin as both sides increased their score by 20 points.

In the last, Alexandra again flirted with danger, kicking 4.4 to 3.2. They will need to straighten up in front of goals if they want to get close to any of the top teams this season.

Perfect day for run

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Margaret Lewis Reserve was resplendent on Saturday morning for Round 3 of the Yarra Ranges Athletics cross country season.

Although a little damp underfoot, the course and conditions were perfect for cross country running.

Another great turn-out of athletes of all ages was great to see; watch out kids, mum is getting fit and catching you!

Thank you to the parents who helped out with timekeeping and recording.

Diary note: the club AGM will be held at the Lilydale Bowls Club on Sunday 7 May, followed by pizza and some barefoot bowling for those interested.

MONBULK JUNIOR FOOTBALL Season 2017 has started for the Monbulk Junior Football Club with some age groups having multiple entries and the creation of an Under 12s Girls team.

Round 1 saw all teams taking the field in good spirits and competitively with the majority playing against Olinda on a sunny Sunday.

Under 12 Girls were at Belgrave but lost against a more settled and refined team in Belgrave.

This week, Round 2 saw Monbulk Junior Football Club hosting Woori Yallock at home and due to the sheer number of teams being fielded this year by Monbulk, two of the teams - Under 12s Girls and Under 14s Maroons - took to the field at Silvan Football Ground.

It was a day of mixed success but ended on a high with the Under 16s scoring a win and a great family atmosphere of the club’s first meal night.
