Plan to raise bar Springvale’s new community hub doesn’t “pass the pub test” and is a waste of money, according to councillor Tim Dark.

He told the Monday 24 April Greater Dandenong Council meeting that constituents didn’t want the $40 million Springvale Road project and that it would create further council debt.

“We are representing the poorest of the poor,” he said.

But Cr Roz Blades said the hub would give the people of Springvale “the facilities that they deserve so that it can make their lives better”.

“One way you keep people poor and uneducated is by not providing facilities for them to learn at,” she said.

“We’re all here to provide a better way of life.”

The project comes from the Springvale Civic Masterplan, formed from community feedback, and was further shaped by community input last April.

“Tim was talking about what people said to him during the election time,” Cr Blades told the Journal after the meeting.

$6 million class upgrade

By Casey Neill Lyndale Secondary College is celebrating a $6 million boost.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams told principal Mark Moir about the 2017-18 State Budget funding on Friday 28 April and officially announced the cash on Monday 1 May. “The level of excitement around the school is as high as I can ever remember, particularly from the kids,” Mr Moir said.

“They’re keeping an eye on with what’s going on with the buildings.

“I think it will give the kids a definite, heightened sense of pride.”

He said work was already underway on a performing arts centre “which will complement the extra-curricular activities in the school” and accommodate presentations and guest speakers.

A science, technology, engineering and maths

(STEM) centre is also being built at the Dandenong North school.

“It will help further develop the relationships we have with the local primary schools that come to the school for the science programs we offer them,” Mr Moir said.

“With the new funding, we’ll be able to build a new library and relocate the administration onto Halton Road and get away from the very busy Gladstone Road.

“That will provide a safer environment for the kids and the parents when they’re coming into the school.”

Ms Williams said the State Government providing money to plan the coming upgrade in its previous budget and $7 million in the 2015-16 budget to fund the works currently underway.

She said it was difficult for kids to get a firstrate education in a second-rate classroom.

“So this upgrade will really make a differ-

“Lyndale is already a great school with a fantastic teaching staff.

In Brief Police fly recognition flag An Aboriginal flag now proudly and permanently flies outside Dandenong Police Station.

Police Minister Lisa Neville visited the station with Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams on Friday 21 April.

Victoria Police southern metro region Aboriginal community liaison officer Stewart Taylor said he felt a sense of achievement when he saw the red, black and yellow flag flown for the first time.

“I think it’s extremely important for Aboriginal people from the area to have the recognition that we are a culturally safe space,” he said.

“I think it’s very important that it’s flown.

“Victoria Police had no money to fund that.”

Mr Taylor said Ms Williams helped to secure State Government funding to make it happen.

“We’re one step closer to getting flags outside every police station in our area,” he said.

Car theft and drug charges Jessica Swindle is wanted on car theft and drug offences.

Police have a number of warrants for the 20-year-old’s arrest and are appealing for public help to find her.

She is believed to frequent the Dandenong, Doveton, Frankston and Knox areas.

Swindle is described as 165 centimetres tall with a thin build, brown hair and blue eyes.

Public appeal for help Police say a man wanted over burglary, robbery, theft and assaults is known to frequent Noble Park.

They are appealing for public help to find Sam Taualii.

A warrant has been issued for the 21-yearold’s arrest after he breached a community corrections order in December.

He is also wanted over a number of breaches since then and in relation to a burglary, robbery, theft and assaults.

Taualii is described as 183 centimetres tall with a medium build and black hair.

He is also known to frequent the Ringwood East and Heidelberg West areas and might be using public transport.

He said Dandenong Library usage doubled within a few months of its relocation to the new Dandenong Civic Centre.

“That could hardly be seen to be wasted, the money spent there,” he said.

“With the learnings from Dandenong Library I’m sure that Springvale Library will be even better.

“Poorer people, students from lower socioeconomic families will have access to updated technology and facilities that will help them with the education and, therefore, with their life more broadly.”

Cr Youhorn Chea joined Cr Dark in voting against the proposal because he wanted to retain the old library, which had been a study hub for many new migrants.

Cr Matthew Kirwan said retaining the current buildings would compromise the design.

She said Corporal Donaldson spoke about his life experiences in a very humorous and sensitive manner and had his audience spellbound.

At the end of the session, students asked him questions about his life.

Three received a signed copy of The Crossroad for asking the most poignant questions.

Dandenong North students heard from a Victoria Cross recipient that the army was his salvation.

Corporal Mark Donaldson spoke to Lyndale Secondary College’s Year 8 students, who study war in history class, on Friday 21 April to mark Anzac Day. He was awarded Australia’s highest military honour, the Victoria Cross (VC), in 2009.

In September 2008 in eastern Afghanistan, then-Trooper Donaldson exposed himself to enemy fire to protect injured troops and rescued an interpreter under heavy enemy fire.

Lyndale library manager Mary Koutras said Corporal Donaldson shared details from his book The Crossroad with students.

100 years ago 3 May 1917 About People It is with deep regret we chronicle the death of Sergeant Arthur G Orgill of the 5th Pioneers who was killed in action in France on 11 April 1917 - an advice to that reached his relatives last week.

Deceased was a native of Dandenong, 28 years of age, and was highly respected.

To the bereaved ones we tender sincere sympathy in their bereavement, coming as it does only a few days after news was received of the death of his brother, Sgt Ernest A Orgill.

50 years ago 4 May 1967 Migrants in fight to capture thieves Two men, later convicted of shop-breaking, were fought and captured by three young mi-

grants after a shop-breaking in the heart of Dandenong last Thursday night.

In Dandenong Court later, chairman of the bench Mr T R Mayberry SM warmly commended the action of the migrants, a Pole, a Greek, and a Russian.

“You are all deserving of the highest compliment for the public spirit you have shown in apprehending these defendants and calling the police,” Mr Mayberry said.

It is likely that each of the men will receive a letter of commendation from the Police Commissioner Mr R H Arnold.

20 years ago 5 May 1997 War declared on drugs Springvale will establish Victoria’s first community-based drugs action group in a bid for a drug free city.

Calling for representatives on the ac-

tion committee, the head of Springvale CIB, Senior Sergeant Ian Wilool, said last Friday that the drug problem was the worst he had known.

“I’ve worked at Springvale since 1989 and I’ve never seen it (the drugs problem) as bad as this.”

He was speaking at a packed community forum at Greater Dandenong Council’s Springvale office.

Some of the ideas put forward by the audience for investigation by the committee were: •฀Surveillance cameras in problem areas; •฀Marked syringes to allow carelessly dumped needles to be traced to the supplier, such as needle exchange; •฀Legislating to make it an offence to leave a syringe in a public place or loitering for the purpose of drug dealing; •฀Introducing laws on which unemployed people suspected of dealing drugs found with large sums of money must explain

where they got it; and •฀Constructive after-school programs for secondary school students.

5 years ago 23 April 2012 The Red Letter Day of Hope It’s fear that is motivating Dandenong west parents Kaye and Peter Taylor to don red Tshirts and rally in Melbourne next Monday for a national disability insurance scheme.

Their 45-year-old dependent daughter Donna, all 28 kilograms of her, lives in a wheelchair.

She has cerebral palsy, a spine twisted by scoliosis, spastic quadriplegia and an intellectual disability.

Mr Taylor said he and his wife’s greatest fear was that Donna would be “put in an old people’s home” when he and his wife, both 68, could no longer took after her.

Pastries are fresh from the south

Jose Bevacqua took over baking duties from the retiring previous owner about three years ago.

“He also was the one to teach me,” he said.

“This is a little gem from South American in Melbourne.”

The Argentinian-born chef churns out hundreds of South American pastries every day.

“We make facturas. Facturas is like a Danish,” he said.

“In our culture we have facturas like a breakfast in the morning or in the afternoon with a coffee.”

Jose said the traditional Argentinian pastry recipes differed from their French equivalents.

“The French croissant is something very crispy, very airy,” he said.

“Ours is a little bit more dense.

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL “We’ve got a lot of egg in the recipe, too, which is more rich in flavour.

“I love croissants, I love making croissants.

“On Saturdays I make maybe 200.

“The other main ingredient is the caramel.

“Ninety per cent of our products have caramel on it.”

He makes about 300 profiteroles each day, effortlessly piping a choux pastry that looks more like butter onto metre-long baking trays in elegant swirls.

“This recipe is nearly 600 grams of flour and

They’re a best seller and can feature savoury or sweet fillings.

Jose normally starts baking at 5am, and has help in the shop from his wife and daughter.

“It’s a family business,” he said.

When asked when he started baking, Jose said:

“This is something that you learn when you’re a kid.

“I got the opportunity to learn from someone that was born in a bakery.”

He still makes his pastries and cakes the oldfashioned way, mixing doughs and batters by hand.

He’ll take the same approach to his next venture - ice cream.

“We make ice cream the very, very traditional way,” he said.

“We don’t use any premix.”

Opening Sundays is another plan on the horizon, along with expanding the shop area - in turn reducing the kitchen space - and adding chairs and a coffee machine.

“I’m looking not to move the shop but to move the production,” Jose said.

“Every two weeks or three weeks I have people from cafes asking ‘can you do this or supply this?’ and I have to say no.”

Hope centre’s help plea Cornerstone is calling for community help to fund its move to a new home.

The Journal revealed in December that the Dandenong outreach centre’s 25-year home at Walker and Mason streets was up for sale.

The Rado family owns the converted church and provided the site rent free for 25 years.

Cornerstone Contact Centre CEO Stephen Barrington said the Rado family’s support had allowed the service to grow from a hunch and a dream to a home for people who were experiencing hardship.

“We all need somewhere to call home,” he said.

“Through providing a meal or food parcel, a safe place to meet, a place to belong, social connection, a positive environment, good friends or a listening ear, Cornerstone continues to be a home to many of the people who come through our doors each year.

“They may have experienced relationship breakdown, mental health issues, unemployment, they may have come from overseas where they faced trials such as war and famine in their homeland, or any number of complexities.”

Cornerstone is running a There’s No Place Like Home campaign to raise about $75,000 to cover rent at a new premises.

Service users, volunteers and others have shared what Cornerstone means to them, from relationships and hope to listening, respect and volunteers.

“We’re nearly halfway,” Mr Barrington said.

“But we’re not in a position to get a lease until we’re well and truly on the way.

“We’d be interested in chatting to anyone - businesses particularly - about coming on board.

“We’d like to have a whole range of community partners on board.

“We have been applying for grants and trusts and are engaged in many conversations.”

Commonwealth Bank Melbourne region general manager Michelle Winzer said at the time that 15 staff were inside the bank when the “terrible event” occurred.

She said seven were taken to hospital and all had since been discharged and were recovering at home.

Springvale’s Commonwealth Bank is back open following a fire attack that injured more than 20 people last November.

Area manager Christopher Beames said his team was delighted to be back in the refurbished Springvale Road premises.

Victoria Police and the State Government announced on Thursday 27 April that 50 officers were headed for the region from next month.

There’ll be 10 for Greater Dandenong, eight to the local CIU, one to divisional crime scene services and 31 to neighbouring Casey.

These officers are among the first 300 of 3135 frontline police being deployed over the next five years. They’ve been allocated using a new Victoria Police model that identified the areas of greatest need.

Police Association secretary Sergeant Wayne Gatt said the deployment would have a positive impact on the ability of police to prevent and reduce crime.

“The Police Association has for some time advocated the urgent recruitment and deployment of additional police to these areas,” he said. “We also acknowledge the level of consultation that’s taken place with the Police Association by government and Victoria Police in determining where the first 300 officers would be allocated.

“This shows a willingness to listen to what police on the ground are saying about where they are most stretched.”

Sergeant Gatt said the announcement marked the start of a long-term commitment to bring police resources back to levels where members could make real inroads in combating the ice epidemic, family violence and violent crime.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said the allocations would put more police out on patrol to respond where and when needed.

Mr Ashton said Victorians would start to see the extra police in their communities from next month, with all 300 to be rolled out

by April next year.

Plan approval reversed “It was the one and only, absolutely correct decision.”

Silvia Mastrogiovanni said the 10 April Greater Dandenong Council decision to approve four double-storey homes in Wedge Street, Dandenong, was “mind-boggling”.

The Dandenong Community Association spokeswoman applauded councillors’ resolution to reverse it at the Monday 24 April meeting.

“What I can’t get over is that amendment C182 was passed unanimously,” she said. “I can’t believe some councillors have swapped camp so quickly.

“Over 500 residents wanted this amendment signed and asked for it.”

The C182 Planning Scheme Amendment Ms Mastrogiovanni referred to is awaiting Planning Minister approval to make it law.

The Wedge Street site would then change from residential growth zone to the more subdued general residential zone.

Council officers said the amendment “must be taken into consideration when assessing the application”.

But Councillor Matthew Kirwan said that the proposal didn’t even meet pre-C182 planning conditions.

On Monday 24 April he successfully moved, six votes to three, that the council go back to the drawing board with the application.

Councillors then passed, eight votes to one, the original recommendation from council officers, which was to refuse the application.

Cr Sean O’Reilly moved the refusal at the 10 April meeting and lost four votes to seven.

Cr Tim Dark then put forward an alternative that he said improved the project and it succeeded, six votes to five.

Arguing his rescission motion on 24 April, Cr Kirwan said Cr Dark’s alternative created new problems.

“By increasing the width of the driveway we were reducing the width of the living areas by almost two metres!” he said.

“No one’s arguing this isn’t a good site for townhouse development.

“It’s a good site for townhouse development that does meet our planning scheme.”

In opposition, Cr Dark said the council refused

“Two doors down something that’s even worse is permitted,” he said.

He said he’d received phone calls from people accusing him of being “worse than Hitler” for supporting the application.

Cr O’Reilly said the applicant should “go back to the drawing board, look at our planning code and resubmit a new application”.

“The applicant does not want to reduce the number of units,” he said.

“This would fix all the issues.”

He said the proposal failed 20 of the council’s minimum planning criteria.

“What does minimum mean?” he said.

“If it’s only meeting 73 of the 93 it’s below minimum.

“Cr Dark did not defend one technical aspect of the application at all.

“We understand the need for housing.

“If you do it in the wrong way you can end up with lots of problems down the track.”

Peulich in the fight of her life as the contenders circle

By Cam Lucadou-Wells South-Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich is in a fight for her political life, with a four-way contest to keep her prized number two spot on the Liberal Party ticket for the 2018 state election.

The shadow cabinet member is being challenged

by Casey councillor Damien Rosario, former Casey mayor and Mordialloc MP Lorraine Wreford as well as Mark Barrow in the pre-selection battle.

Sitting Liberal MP Gordon Rich-Phillips is unopposed on the number one spot on the ticket.

In the 2014 state election, two Liberal candidates (Mr Rich-Phillips and Ms Peulich), two ALP candidates Gavin Jennings and Adem Somyurek and Greens candidate Nina Springle were elected for the upper-house region. It means that spots lower than number two on the Liberal ticket would be battling to be voted into State Parliament.

Ms Peulich has held the seat since 2006 after serving three terms as a state MP for the lower house seat of Bentleigh.

She and the other pre-selection candidates are unable to comment ahead of the 9 May pre-selection vote due to Liberal Party rules.

Bangholme’s new water skiing centre is making a splash in unexpected ways.

The Melbourne Cable Park had a soft opening on Sunday 2 April and has already been inundated with water lovers keen to make waves.

The man behind the innovative park, Ian Clark, is thrilled to see his vision becoming a reality.

“The satisfaction for us comes from the smiles on the faces of the local kids and parents,” he said.

Mr Clark said not only were kids putting down their “screens” and getting active, people in wheelchairs were getting an opportunity to hit the water and indulge their inner “adrenaline junky”.

He’s had several people use a seated wakeboard on the cable system, which tows the skier in a circle around a lake in place of a boat.

It’s an opportunity Mr Clark is now actively pursuing, seeking advice on the equipment, facilities and regulations required for a full accessibility program.

“So many young people through illness or accident are in a chair and they can’t get out of bed,” he said.

“They don’t want to get out of bed, and there’s nothing for them to do. This stuff ’s a game changer for these guys.

“This is a platform where we can actually change the fabric of our community.”

The Journal revealed plans for the park, adjacent to the National Watersports Centre (NWSC) on Patterson River, in February 2015.

The company developing the park, Activ, leased a grassed area that the State Government declared surplus to its needs.

“We’re just about to pack down the aqua park,” Mr Clark said.

“It will be back in September.”

Solar panels power the cable systems on the centre’s two lakes, which each used as much electricity as two washing machines.

“All the lakes are fully operational,” Mr Clark said.

He hopes a high ropes course - the final piece of the puzzle - will be open by December.

“Hopefully, by Christmas we should be fully operational,” he said.

“We have about 80 staff on our books.

“We’re expecting to have 200 people on the books by the end of this year.”

The park could attract 90,000 people to Bangholme each year, Mr Clark told the Journal, and would average about 250 visitors each day.

“The Queenslander saw and heard the loudest explosion he thinks he’s ever heard,” Jeff Casson told the Dandenong Anzac Day service.

“It shook the sweat from his brow, rattled his teeth and took the breath out of his chest.

“Amongst the blast was his brother, the young Victorian.”

The soldiers weren’t brothers by blood, but by mateship.

“The Queenslander instantly thought his young mate had been killed,” Jeff said.

“The Queenslander found his brother, slightly broken but seemingly alive.

“This happened to me on the 23rd of September in 2011.”

He was in Afghanistan with the 3/4 Cavalry Regiment.

He’d become mates - brothers - with Scott May and his brother Chris.

Scott had returned home. Chris was “engulfed by dust and fire” as a bomb blast tore apart his Bushmaster vehicle.

“I saw a 240 kilogram wheel station removed from the front of his vehicle and thrown down like toys by an angry child,” Jeff said.

“I saw and heard the bolts from the windscreen of his Bushmaster, which is approximately four inches thick, explode off.

“I could think nothing else but ‘how the f***

am I going to explain this to his mum and dad?’.”

The three ‘brothers’ eventually all came home.

Chris and Scott are founding members of support group Young Veterans.

“We all left pieces of ourselves in those places, be that in the streets of Baghdad or the villages and rolling dunes of Iraq, to the winding deserts in Afghanistan,” Jeff said.

“We were soldiers. We were doing a soldier’s job.

“We had to look out for each other, because that’s what soldiers do, that’s what brothers do, and that’s what mates do, most of importantly of all.”

Anzac Day in Dandenong started with a soggy dawn service at the Pillars of Freedom on Clow Street.

A Vietnam Veterans service followed at the Dandenong RSL, then a march from the RSL to the pillars for another service.

Dandenong resident Helen Matthews marched to honour her dad, Martin Te Whango Matthews, who served with the 28th Maori Battalion in Greece.

Former Dandenong Inspector Neil Thomas marched carrying the police flag, and has been part of the Dandenong event for the past 36 years.

Muna Elamin from Dandenong North proudly carried her father’s British Army World War II service record as she marched alongside daughters Danya and Dena.

All profits raised from the appeal fund clinical trials research conducted by the Australia and New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZBCTG) - Australia’s only independent, collaborative breast cancer clinical trials research program.

Clinical trials are the critical step that proves new treatments and prevention strategies are safe and effective before they are made widely available.

Support for clinical trials research will help to get new and promising breast cancer treatments to those who need them.

Splashing out for mum on big day Keysborough’s Karinga Nursery is set to bring a splash of colour to mums all around the country this Mother’s Day. A family business, Karninga Nursery has been growing flowers in Keysborough for more than 40 years and produces more than 1 million pots a year.

With its flowers destined for stores across Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland, Mother’s Day is one of the special event nursery’s busiest times of year, with the breathtaking chrysanthemum flower at the top of

the most wanted list.

With roughly 100,000 pots of chrysanthemums set to depart Karinga in preparation for this Mother’s Day, owner Roy Schirmer contributes not only the flower’s beauty but also its conveniently timed bloom to its continuing popularity.

“The chrysanthemum is a traditional flower, and it’s what they call a short day plant,” Roy said.

“So, as the days get shorter, the plants initiate flower buds and coincidently flowers for Mother’s Day week.

“It’s because we live in the southern hemisphere that it flowers this week ... it doesn’t do that in the northern hemisphere.”

While chrysanthemum flowers are available in a wide range of colours from gold, maroon, bronze, violet and even purple, Roy admits that the traditional colours are usually the most sought after tones to celebrate the mothers of Australia.

“We find colours such as white and pink are most popular because they’re traditional,” Roy said. “However, there are the decorative types that

are also popular later on for people who would rather have a collection for their gardens.

“They’ll go for colours like oranges, pinks and reds - I guess you could call them chrysanthemum collectors.”

While Karinga’s chrysanthemums are set to appear in supermarket giants such as Coles and Woolworths in the lead up to Mother’s Day, potted chrysanthemums will last for weeks following mum’s special day if kept indoors, watered when dry and kept in a well-lit spot.

Skills will be hit by visa curb

By Casey Neill Changes to the skilled foreign worker visa system will hurt Greater Dandenong businesses, particularly manufacturers.

This was the message from South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) and Dandenong-based law firm Macpherson Kelley.

“I came over on a 457 visa,” SEMMA executive officer Adrian Boden revealed.

The Brit was employed as the vice president of engineering for PBR, now Chassis Brakes International, in 2004.

“I was coming from a multinational, European background with brakes,” he said.

“I think I brought something to the community which I wouldn’t have been able to do if I hadn’t stayed on afterwards.”

Mr Boden said he was still seeking more information about the changes and their impacts, but

“I can’t see the advantage of doing the two-year visa”.

The 457 visa previously allowed businesses to employ foreign workers for up to four years in skilled jobs where there was a shortage of Australian workers, with eligibility for Permanent Residency application after two years.

Under changes announced on Tuesday 18 April, the 457 system will be abolished and replaced with the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in March next year.

TSS will include a short-term stream, for up to two years’ work, and a medium-term stream, for up to four years, plus safeguards to prioritise Australian workers and more targeted occupation lists.

The medium-term stream will include a permanent residence pathway after three years.

“I think it would be incredibly negative for the businesses in this area,” Mr Boden said.

“You won’t get a skilled overseas worker relocating for two years.

“We have lots of people who need skilled workers.”

Macpherson Kelley Victorian managing principal Jamie Sturgess said the firm assisted businesses with more than one 457 visa every week.

“There’s a whole host of issues that make recruiting from overseas more difficult than recruiting locally,” he said.

“If you could have an apple in Australia, you’d be stupid if you chose the foreign apple rather than the local apple.”

Mr Sturgess said production manager was one role that had been removed from the jobs list.

“Imagine if we could recruit the best production managers anywhere in the world for roles in Australia and then they teach everyone who works under them their absolute world’s best practice,” he said.

“Australia will become a better, stronger, wealthier country if we have more talent across the board.

“We should be saying to the world ‘this is the best country in the world to live in, and if you are an incredibly talented person that wants to come here and make this home for the rest of your life and contribute back to this community with your sensational skills, in a multitude of ways’ (you are welcome).

“We’re saying ‘no’, whereas I think we should be saying ‘yes’.”

In relation to manufacturing, Macpherson Kelley workplace relations principal Andrew Douglas said: “Australia is still fairly new to transformative value-added manufacturing and we just don’t have the skills base.

“We need to be able to attract the workers that will facilitate the transition like engineers, designers and others because we’re a small economy.”

Nissan moves out Nissan is moving its state headquarters out of Dandenong South. Commercial real estate agent CBRE confirmed it was marketing the 11.42 hectare site on Frankston-Dandenong Road that is home to Nissan’s corporate office and warehousing.

CBRE’s Stephen Adgemis said the area was starved of serviced development sites “as well as owner occupier options over five hectares”.

“With only 28 per cent of the site utilised in its current form, there is a huge opportunity to further capitalise on its position through value-add or expansion possibilities,” he said.

The property is being offered for sale via a public expressions of interest campaign that will close on Thursday 1 June. The Journal contact Nissan for comment but did not receive a response.

Other media outlets have reported that Nissan had outgrown the site and was looking to relocate elsewhere in the south-east.

SPORT Import brings home goal glory

By Nick Creely Brandon Barnes may just be the finest and most damaging striker in Victoria.

The numbers that the Dandenong Thunder superstar continues to churn out defy belief and raise questions of just how far he could go.

The 24-year-old Englishman only joined the Thunder last year, but already has 65 goals to his name, an average of nearly two a match.

His best hauls include an extraordinary eightgoal effort against Nunawading last year, something that made national headlines and is a current NPL Victoria record.

As a youngster, the powerful centre-forward spent time in Bristol City, Swindon Town and Southampton as part of their academies, giving him a taste of life as a professional footballer.

And Barnes is motivated on getting his chance at the next level and will never give up, and said that the only way to raise heads of A-League recruiters is to keep scoring goals and improving his overall game.

“When I got my 50th goal at the club in a pretty short of amount of time, it was actually quite overwhelming - hopefully I can keep fighting and back that up and maybe one day something might come my way,” he said.

“Hopefully, a few A-League clubs can look at me and think I have a lot of potential.

“Playing in Australia, anyone’s aim is to get to the A-League, the top-flight of Australian football, and I’ve got my eye on it and waiting for the chance, I guess.

“I just need to work a bit harder outside of football, I think, getting that extra bit fitter and, hopefully, a club could give me a go, and when-

Small screen is women basketballers’ big score

By Nick Creely It was a landmark day for the WNBL on Tuesday 25 April with Fox Sports and Basketball Australia announcing a new and exciting three-year partnership which puts women’s basketball back on television as of next season.

In what has been a deal pushed for several years, the arrangement will see a minimum of one game per week, plus every finals match, broadcast live in Fox Sports through to the 2019/20 season.

It’s going to be a new look 2017/18 season, with the competition running for 12 weeks from October through to January, culminating with a best of three Semi and Grand Final series.

Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delany was thrilled with the outcome, lauding the competition as one of the most elite competitions in Australia.

“The WNBL is the longest running elite female competition in the country. It features incredible athletes, who are strong and fierce competitors,” he said.

“For too long the league has been invisible with no broadcast partner. “(It) will ensure that fans around the country will be able to watch these athletes live in action.

“This isn’t just another broadcast deal - it’s a partnership. We are invested in making a difference, and putting women’s basketball in this country back on the map.”

WNBL head Sally Phillips was ecstatic that the WNBL is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

“We are thrilled to be entering into this partnership with Fox Sports,” she said.

“As someone who has been involved with the WNBL as a player and administrator over the past 27 years, this announcement is truly amazing.

“I love this game and I am so excited that our clubs and out athletes will be back in the spotlight receiving the recognition and respect they deserve.”

Although the finer details, such as scheduling between Fox Sports and Basketball Australia need to be worked out, it is expected that everything will be finalised in time for the opening game in six months’ time.

Barnes admitted that the departure rocked the club initially and put himself behind personally, but praised the club for bouncing back quickly under the replacement coach Gianfranco Impellizzeri.

“There was obviously a bit of a hic-cup with the coach before the season which probably put us a few weeks behind as a team, but then Gianfranco came in and we are now on the same page and ready to go every weekend,” he said.

“It took us a while to gel as a team, for sure.

“We started the season slowly and I had a little injury so was a little bit behind - but I got back on track and on the same fitness level as the other boys.”

With rumours rife that the Dandenong-Casey area are a legitimate chance of obtaining an ALeague licence, Barnes welcomed the idea and said that the region is the best fit for the expansion of the competition.

“There have obviously been the rumours of having another A-League side, and Dandenong could well be the one,” he said.

“If they tick all the criteria and get that licence, I’ll be banging on their door and try and be a part of it.

“Around this area, football is constantly getting bigger and bigger - that’s why I reckon the A-League licence could sway towards this area, just because of how many clubs are in the area - it would bring a lot of youth and a lot positive things to the area.”

Award caps a stellar season

By Nick Creely The legendary Craig Slocombe has capped off a brilliant 2016/17 season by claiming the Springvale South Club Champion award.

The brilliant left-handed all-rounder and club captain enjoyed a stellar season, making 289 runs at 28.9, with a highestscore of 82 against Narre Warren.

The 82, which came in the last round of the season, was a match-winner for the Bloods.

With wickets tumbling around him, Slocombe produced the knock in just 72 balls in the small total of 178.

But it was with the ball that Slocombe truly shone.

After bowling very little in the first month off the season, the wily skipper took 20 wickets at the impressive average of 10 and an economy of 1.9.

In Round 5, Slocombe took an incredible 5/7 off 15 overs against Dandenong West, a spell that included 11 maidens.

He also took impressive hauls of 4/8 against Berwick, 3/19 against Buckley Ridges and 2/40 against Cranbourne.

It has also been confirmed that Slocombe will continue on with the club next year as captain, after toying with the idea of retirement.

Star top-order batsman Nathan King finished runners-up in the Club Champion voting, after scoring 320 runs at 29.00 and chiming in with 8 wickets.

Late charge gets the Borough across the line

By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIV 2 - ROUND 4 Keysborough 13.8 (86) has ground out a gritty 21-point victory over Murrumbeena 9.10 (64) in front of a healthy home crowd.

It required another strong last-quarter effort for the Borough to lift their record to 2-1, after looking shot midway through the third-term.

In what was an even and tough contest throughout the game, Murrumbeena got the break in the third quarter to take a three-goal lead, before the Borough’s, inspired by star player Riet Pal, and debutant Bryce Dexter, wrestled back the momentum and stormed home in a four goal to nil last-term.

“We had seven changes from last game - Riet Pal was simply amazing and tore the game to shreds,” Boroughs coach Matt Ferguson said.

“Our backs were really, really strong all day we had a lot of guys stand up that usually aren’t among our best players too. We got three-goals down in the third-quarter and then to fight back is a good sign. We’re running out games really well and coming home strong - it’s a real positive for our club.”

Springvale Districts had the bye over the weekend. The Boroughs take on Caufield next week at home, in a game where they will look to break inside the top-four.

DIV 3 - ROUND 3 The competiveness of the competition needs to come into question after yet another round of thrashings.

Only one game was under 50-points in what is becoming a worrying trend.

Sandown Cobras 5.2 (31) have once again been annihilated, this time at the hands of Carrum Patterson Lakes 21.15 (141), who were simply too slick, skillful and strong for the opposition.

The Cobras were competitive early, snagging a first-term goal and keeping the visitors to just 3.3, but from there they were blown away by Jarrod Kennedy, who kicked an impressive six-goal-haul.

Lyndhurst 19.14 (128) did what they needed to do against Dandenong 3.7(25), who took until the third-quarter to register a major.

The Redlegs, who are seriously struggling to remain competitive, must find a way to stay in the contest for longer.

A terrific six-goals to former Melbourne star Russell Robertson has lifted Doveton Eagles 17.13 (115) to a resounding win over Endeavour Hills 8.4 (52).

The game was still up for grabs at three-quarter-time, before the Eagles pulled away with a sixgoal last-quarter.

Hallam 15.9 (99) has officially announced itself as the team to beat, powering past a competitive Lyndale 5.8 (38).

Hawks’ forward Shane Thomas snagged five goals to take his overall season tally to 10.

EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIV 1 - ROUND 3 Noble Park 12.15 (87) has moved to 3-0 and looking primed in 2017, after an untroubled 28-point win over East Ringwood 9.5 (59).

The Bulls, off the back of impressive performances by Brett Dore, Kyle Martin, Tim Kelly and Cosi Anagnostou rode off a challenge in the second-quarter to pull away in a six-goal to four last-half.

Tim Harper (three goals) was once again impressive in attack and continues to thrive, while James Gwilt was steady down back.

Meanwhile, Rowville 12.6 (78) held off Montrose 10.11 (71) in an early season classic, with the

Hawks just pipping the plucky visitors at Seebeck Oval.

Tough, fierce and skillful football treated the crowd down at Rowville, with both sides giving everything to get the four-points.

There was plenty to like for the Hawks, notably Alex Frawley, who was stellar around the ground in a best-afield performance, while Lachlan McDonald (three goals) continued his form and Steven Georgious showed his immense class.

Noble Park host Blackburn at home next Saturday, while Rowville will travel to Vermont in what is set to be a highly-anticipated clash.

Doves plucked by the Eagles

By David Nagel Doveton has failed in its first big test under new coach Aaron Davey with a 26-point loss to Cranbourne in the South East Football Netball League match of the day at Robinson Oval.

The Doves matched motors with the reigning champs until three quarter time, but a 6.2 to 2.1 final term silenced the large home crowd in attendance.

Livewire Doveton forwards Michael Henry and Nick Battle kicked the only two goals of the opening term, capitalising on the great work of ruckman Russell Gabriel and an intense brand of footy around the stoppages.

“Our attitude is brilliant boys, our pressure is up and they’re fumbling, we’ve really come to play, but it means nothing if we don’t bring it again,” Davey said.

Davey moved full-forward Taylor Joyce out to centre half forward in an attempt to drag Cranbourne’s best defender Brandon Osborne out of the goal-square. Osborne has been the pre-eminent defender in SEFNL for the last seven years and added a goal-less Joyce to his long-list of battles won.

Goals to Troy Tharle, Shaun Marusic and Keenan Hughes saw the Eagles take an eight-point lead, 3.5 to 2.3, into half time.

The tempo lifted in the second half, the Doves kicking four goals to three in the third term to trail by a point at the final change.

Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey almost knew what was about to happen.

“We spoke at half time about paying the price and this is where we need to dig deep and give everything,” Goosey roared.

“I know we’ve got the run in the legs, but if they get a good start don’t drop your heads.”

How prophetic those words would prove to be with the Doves taking the lead through Battle, just 18 seconds in, before the Eagles took command.

They kicked five on the trot to run away with the contest. Khaled ‘Cyril’ Kandakji kicked two including a goal-of-the-year contender from directly in front of the Doveton members. Cyril brought back memories of Peter Daicos with a magnificent dribble kick from the boundary while running at full tilt.

Marusic, Osborne and Tharle were outstanding for the winners while Gabriel and Henry scored top marks for the Doves.

In other games, Hampton Park went down to Officer by 92 points; Beaconsfield scored a 72-point win over Pakenham, while Narre Warren bounced back to the winners list with an eight-goal victory over Tooradin. Berwick had the bye.

Stingrays reign supreme as Cannons fail to fire

By Nick Creely Dandenong Stingrays proved a class above the Calder Cannons on Sunday in a relatively onesided affair at Shepley Oval.

The final margin, 38-points, was probably not a true reflection of the dominance the Rays had for three-quarters, but a five-goal surge from the Cannons in the last 15 minutes of the last-quarter significantly trimmed the win.

With as many as eight of their regular stars missing, including skipper Oscar Clavarino, Bailey Morrish, Mitchell Riordan and Luke Davies, it was always going to be a tough challenge even against the struggling Cannons.

But the Rays started like a house-on-fire, with Riley D’Arcy slamming the opening goal in the first few minutes of the match, before controlling proceedings to take a 32-point lead into the firstbreak.

D’Arcy, who kicked three opening term goals, was a handful with his aerial presence and ability to use his athleticism.

It seemed the momentum couldn’t possibly be halted when the Rays put two quick goals on the board to start the second, but their almost 50-point lead was slashed with a couple of late Cannon goals to reduce the margin back to 40 at the major-break.

With a slight lull in the Rays’ goal-kicking spree, a few strong passages in the third-quarter ensured they would take a 48-point lead with a quarter left to play.

Mitch Cotter, Darcy Hope, Dylan Morris, Hunter Clark and Mason De Wit found their share of the footy in a somewhat subdued quarter for the Rays, but the Cannons were more industrious at the contest, kicking 2.2 to the Rays 3.4.

When the Rays skipped out to a 60-point lead, it seemed 100 points was not outside the realms of

possibility, but the Cannons fought admirably to gain respect on the scoreboard, and put together their most impressive 15 minutes of the game, slamming on five unanswered goals to leave them with a six-goal loss.

D’Arcy, was arguably the difference between the two sides with an imposing five-goal-haul, and is surely now among the names on every AFL recruiters watch-list.

He, along with a host of youngsters such as Dylan Hope, carried the flag despite the loss of leaders and their AFL Academy representatives to run the Cannons’ midfielders ragged.

The Rays now have a 3-2 record, and face a big test at Preston City Oval next Sunday against Northern Knights.

The Cannons remain winless and down at the bottom-of-the-ladder.

Ray of hope for young Stingers

By Nick Creely The initial squads for the 2017 AFL Under 18 Women’s Championships have been released, with a whopping nine Dandenong Stingrays selected for Vic Country representation.

Headlining the act is inaugural TAC Cup Girls best-and-fairest winner Bridie Kennedy, who shone for the Rays this year in a brilliant individual season and is a chance to be named captain.

Scott Gowans will lead the Vic Country side for the second year running with a more experienced group than disappointed last year with eight AFL Academy players featuring in the squad.

Stingrays’ coach Dee Longwill provides an insight into each of the Stingrays selected in the squad: Jordyn Allen, 16, 173cm: “Experienced and very skilful around the backline but can play any position around the ground. She works hard to improve and is a role model to her peers.”

Ruby Clayton, 17, 162cm: “A strong forward line player with a long kick and a fierce player who wants to improve.”

Georgia Gee, 17, 157cm: “Her experience and knowledge of the game is amazing. Is footy smart, and her direction and positioning is outstanding.”

Courtney Jones, 16, 164cm: “Natural talent, loves to kick a goal or two, works hard and always wants to improve and learn from her peers and role models.”

Bridie Kennedy, 17, 172cm: “Played mainly in the ruck, but had chances as a ruck rover. Was up for the challenge as we didn’t have many talls. Is a fantastic leader and role model for all young talent coming through.”

Sophie Phillips, 17, 163cm: “Strong tackler and hard at the ball and always encouraging her teammates.”

Samantha Ryan, 17, 170cm: “Natural talent, strong overhead and a massive kick.”

The Stingrays, along with the Murray Bushrangers, featured the most representatives, in what is a major positive for the south-east area.

Geelong Falcons and GWV Rebels each have five players in the squad, Gippsland Power has four and Bendigo Pioneers have three.

The first-round will be played at Simonds Stadium in Geelong on 17 June, and will then continue a month later on the Gold Coast from 10

It’s as simple as one-two for Dapiran’s smart duo Peter Dapiran’s evening was short but sweet as his only two greyhounds engaged, Sarah Swift and In A Spin, ran the quinella in the fourth race at Sandown Park on Thursday.

Sarah Swift showed her customary early dash while In A Spin was slow to begin and settled midfield. In A Spin stormed home however, falling short by a half-length to Sarah Swift in 29.96.

“I expected them to go well though I thought the result might have been the other way around,” Dapiran said.

“It’s not the first time it’s happened - you always need luck and fortunately we got a bit of it last night,” he said modestly.

The pair is a part of just seven racing greyhounds in Dapiran’s Northwood kennel. Of the duo, Dapiran is most excited about In A Spin who is starting to live up to connection’s expectations.

“He’s only a young dog and still learning,” he said.

“He broke in sensationally in Queensland and his owners sent him down with big wraps. He went a little bit wayward during pre-training but

Sarah Swift’s win was the 13th of her 39 start career. It followed a luckless trip to Albion Park last week for heats of the Bogie Leigh Futurity.

“We took her to Brisbane last week and unfortunately she found some interference around the first turn and didn’t get a go at them,” Dapiran said.

Dapiran is open to entering Sarah Swift in next month’s Sapphire Crown series though says the decision is yet to be made.

“She’s going well enough to have a go. I’ll have to speak to the owner.”

Last night’s racing was also highlighted by three staying events with many greyhounds deep in preparation for next month’s RSN Sandown Cup. Dundee Calypso the most impressive of the winners last night, going past Fanta Bale in the closing stages to prevail in good time.
