It’s a bit of bad luck. It doesn’t really leave you with many options. I’ve been going here for 15 or 20 years. It will be an inconvenience to a lot of people.

I think it’s really sad. The saddest part is for the older people because it’s easy for them to get around.

It’s checkout time for IGA BY LUKE VOOGT After half a century, Geelong West IGA will close its doors for the last time in four weeks, to the disappointment of local shoppers. The closure will leave most of the store’s staff out of work, like manager Ken Sileav - who is sorry to see it go. “Not only for me but I’ve got about 30ish staff here,” he says. “But it’s beyond my control. “We’ve all gotta look for work. I think the young ones will find work - for us middle agers it will take a bit longer.” In Ken’s 35 years working at IGA and Foodworks supermarkets he has seen the independent traders disappear one-by-one. “Over the years they’re just being gobbled up by the Coles and the Safeways,” the 55-yearold says. “They’ve slaughtered the independents.” A discount chemist chain will take over the building, joining the three chemists already on the shopping strip. “That’s just overkill,” Ken says. “Not only is it going to push us out of work, the other chemists, they’ll be pushing s__t up hill.” The building has been home to the supermarket under different names for 40 or 50

Geelong West IGA manager Ken Silaev is disappointed to see the store go. 166499

years, Ken says. “That’s what it’s built for. To put a chemist here doesn’t make economic sense.” Ken says the closure will hit the elderly the worst - especially “the ones that don’t drive”.

He added a lot of elderly migrants like the store for its ability to order in products, without contacting head office like the supermarket giants. “A lot of people just walk in and have been in the area as

long as the store or longer.” Susie Carobbo will miss the store after working there for 23 years. “I love the customers they’re great,” she says. “You see the regular faces all

the time and you become really good friends with them. “It’s kind of like an icon I’d say. A lot of the locals are very sad because it’s been there their whole life.” Susie has two sons in primary school and will be jobless following the closure. Luckily her partner works but they’ll have to tighten the budget, she says. The 39-year-old reckons the change in the suburb’s demographic may have affected business. “Geelong West is becoming a little bit hipster,” she says. “It was such a busy atmosphere here once but it’s changed a lot over the years. A lot of the elderly have gone now - there’s younger people in the area.” Boss Burger’s Jamie Kolovos, one of several local traders who picks up supplies from the IGA, describes the closure as disappointing. “For us it was very convenient to have a grocery store nearby,” he says. “I dare say there’d be a few local traders that do their shopping there. I guess this is just the way big business works, they make their decision and then they move on.” The Voice was unable to reach the store’s owner before deadline.

Push for sex attack court reforms Barwon CASA chief executive officer Helen Bolton. 166520

“Here at CASA we want to just wrap our arms around victims when they come to us and we will be stepping up our campaign to help,” Helen says.

There are two things that the CASA campaign will focus on, the first being to provide a full roster of properly qualified doctors to provide a full forensic

examination of those wanting to report an assault. In the past two years Barwon CASA has overseen 65 crisis case examinations and only 29

of those were conducted in Geelong. The second major objective of the campaign will be to provide a remote facility to allow victims to give evidence away from the courtroom and their attackers. In Geelong there is a facility but it is located within the Geelong Courts precinct therefore victims have to sit in the open foyer of the courts before being called. “Just walking into those Geelong courts can be extremely traumatising for victims even before they face the pressure of the legal system during a trial,” Helen says. “In our current system, the only way that perpetrators are held accountable to face court hinges on the victim’s evidence. “Therefore we have an obligation to provide every support to victims to enable this to occur safely. “These people need to be assured that there is a safe place for them to go and report their cases. “There is no compulsion for these people to proceed with legal cases if they don’t feel able to but we want to ensure that if they do decide to proceed that they are going to have all the help possible available to them locally.” Anyone who has experienced sexual assault can call Barwon CASA on 5222 4318.

12344045-CG13-17

BY MANDY OAKHAM THE campaign for justice for Geelong victims of sexual assault took a step forward last week. The week saw saturation media coverage of the case of a 14-year-old girl allegedly raped by three men at St Albans Park in November 2015. Charges against the three were withdrawn last month with the victim being too traumatised to appear in court. Services to help such victims will be extended in the next couple of months and organisations such as Barwon Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) will be stepping up their campaign demanding reforms to the criminal justice system. One of the first areas to see improvement locally will be the staffing levels at Barwon CASA headquarters in Spring Street, Geelong West. There are around 100 staff based at the headquarters combining the expertise of counsellors, police, doctors and specially trained child protection officers from the Department of Human Services. Barwon CASA chief executive officer Helen Bolton says that the community was “bewildered and confused” when high profile cases like the St Albans Park case do not proceed.

STYLE on pako

Some space to suit yourself YOU can literally suit yourself at Brown’s Mensland and you can be guaranteed everything will fit like the proverbial glove. Staff in store pride themselves on customer service and they love being known as the shop “where customers do the talking”. The owners of Brown’s Mensland are proud the store is locally owned and that they have operated since 1956. In 1956, Geoffrey Brown, who had previously spent his time delivering garments door to door in his hometown of Camperdown, started his clothing business at 159 Melbourne Road, North Geelong. Brown lived in this same building with his wife and five sons, and it still stands today. Business was good, but there was limited space. As the customers grew, so did the need for more stock and a larger premise. Brown purchased and moved the business to 167 Pakington Street, West Geelong, in 1966. The opportunity to launch Brown’s Drapery Centre was also realised in Pakington Street. Once again, as the demand increased, so did the need for even more space. And so the search for a new home ensued. In 1982, the bare allotment of land that is now 158-

164 Pakington Street was purchased. The G.N. Brown and Son’s building was built and is where the business of Brown’s Mensland still operates today. “Our vision since day one has been to ensure that our customers have a family they can trust and rely on to source clothing that fits their needs,” manager Cameron Brown says. “Our personal approach to business and building community-based relationships has been a rewarding one and allowed us to maintain a quality service that delivers our customers only the best in a shopping experience. “We provide perfectly tailored suits designed to make you look and feel your best for any occasion.” The store aims to provide a variety of men’s clothing and apparel for any budget, style or size, as well specialising in formalwear for many events including weddings. Brown’s also offers an extensive range of suit hire options ideal for people looking for just the right look for a wedding, black tie event, school formal or debutante. In stock there are more than 20 different suit hire combinations, including vests, long ties, slim ties, bow ties, pocket hanks, shoes and a

variety of other formalwear accessories, available in a range of colours for every budget. Also on offer is a large range of men’s casual T-shirts, trousers, designer shirts and ties, socks, jocks, belts and footwear. Popular brands in stock include Bonds, Jockey, Levi’s, Huski, Bisley, City Collection, Fashion Biz, John Kevin and Bongardi. The in-store team consists of eight people, with more than 140 years of combined experience in retail. “You can trust us to guide you in each consultation with our expert knowledge as to what looks right for you,” Cameron says. “We strive to provide quality clothing and the very best customer service to our community, ensuring there is always a place to go that people know and trust. “Our mission is to ensure the people of our community have a representative dedicated to sourcing and providing garments necessary to their requirements.” Outside of the store the local owners pride themselves on supporting many local projects and charities including Ashby Primary School, Diversitat, Pako Festa and The Road Home.

Brown’s Mensland manager Cameron Brown says his team provides perfectly tailored suits designed to make customers look and feel their best for any occasion.

Impeccable taste wins out BY EMILY ROBINSON SISTERS are doing it for themselves at Minerva Grocer. Manager Morgan Hampstead is proud of her team of 10 women who work together to make sure they are offering the best of produce across Minerva Grocer’s stores on Pakington Street and the newly opened Minerva Road. “It’s a small team, but we’re all about empowering women and we’re a very happy team,” Morgan says. “We’ve worked really hard to get these two shops up in four months - Minerva Grocer doesn’t look like a grocer, it has a boutique feel.” With Australian art on the walls and produce stocked among French antiques, Minerva Grocer is far from a typical shopping experience. Red shopping baskets are nowhere to be seen, instead, hand-woven baskets with blue handles will carry customers’ shopping. “We offer great customer service, we’re more than happy to special order and source product for people,” Morgan says. Newly married Morgan spends seven days a week between both stores, and can even be found making deliveries. “With the new store’s opening, I’ve been able to take

Morgan’s must haves: 1. Bloody Mary BBQ sauce 2. Sage Choice lamb mince 3. Pure Pop Icy-poles

stock back and forth so we have enough produce.” Growing up in Warrnambool, Morgan’s family frequently shopped at Materia Brothers, the town’s local grocer. “I loved going to the familyoperated grocer, it is where my love of fresh produce began.” Now living in Geelong

West for five years, Morgan has brought her love of Warrnambool to Minerva Grocer. “Some of our products come from the Western district, such as Shaw River Buffalo Mozzarella and Sungold milk from my friend’s parents’ dairy farms.” If she’s not at the store this

season, Morgan can be found sorting through fresh autumn produce at fruit markets with her local supplier Paul from Only Fresh. “I look for the best suppliers,” she assures. “We know our produce is the best of the range and we’re still really competitive with the

supermarket prices.” With thoughts turning to all things chocolate and bunnies, there are some treats that people should hop into store for. Specialty made Simon Johnson handmade Easter eggs are available in two sizes for customers. “They’ve been made in Italy,” Morgan enthuses. “We also have hot cross buns from LaMadre and The Healthy Loaf. “There’s lots of exciting things happening at Minerva Grocer over the next six months.” Minerva Grocer is open from 7.30am to 5.30pm Mondays to Fridays, 7.30am to 2pm on Saturdays and 10am to 2pm on Sundays at 362 Pakington Street, phone 5229 6956.

F45 - fitness like no other A fitness studio like no other has hit Geelong West. F45 Training is one of the fastest growing franchises in Australia and now has a home on Shannon Avenue. Owner and trainer Tara Scully-Power at the Shannon Avenue gym says F45 is a teambased functional training studio that “places a huge emphasis on three key areas - motivation, innovation and results”. For the uninitiated F45 refers to the interval style workouts which are 45 minutes and offer a combination of both cardio and resistance training during the week. Saturday classes are referred to the “power hour” classes. “It’s the only class that goes for one hour - but don’t worry, we have a live DJ every other week to keep you motivated,” Tara says. “A lot of people walk past and think it looks hard, or it’s only for young people, but our workouts are for all ages and fitness levels - whether you are an elite athlete or you’re new to the fitness journey, we cater for everyone,” Tara says. “That’s why we offer the seven-day trial, to give everyone the opportunity to come in and try it out for themselves - but I’ll warn you, once you start, you’ll be hooked.” Tara, who in her previous

life was a competitive athlete and soccer player, always knew fitness would feature in her future life. “Fitness was always on the cards and when the opportunity came up to start F45 Geelong

West, I knew it was the right decision,” she says. She says F45’s biggest point of difference is its “real time spirit”. “When you come into our studio you are instantly

welcomed by our trainers and become part of the F45 family. “Everyone knows each other and even when new people arrive they know straight away they are part of something and it becomes a

thing that they just love.” F45 Training Geelong West is at 270 Shannon Avenue, Geelong West, phone 0406 123 393 or visit f45training. com.au/geelongwest for more information.

THE FEED on pako The Number Two beef burger with cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and avocado with salad, relish and aioli.

BURGER INC Shop 1, 328 Pakington Street 5222 7775

Big bite for charity BY EMILY ROBINSON Newtown’s favourite burger shop is giving back to the community this Easter with a generous fund-raiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Burger Inc business owner Hilal Acar says the fund-raiser will give customers the opportunity to buy a burger and donate to the Royal Children’s Hospital at the same time. “One hundred per cent of the days takings on 13 April will be directly donated to the hospital,” Hilal says. “We did the fund-raiser last year as well, it’s something I’m really passionate about – it’s very close to my heart. “Although Easter is generally a quieter time because people are out of town, we still got such a great response last year.

Hilal’s recommendation:

The burger: The Number Two featuring cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and avocado – just $12.90 The drink: A milkshake – flavors range from traditional chocolate to blue heaven and lime. Burger Inc vibe: a hip takeaway joint with minimalist decor.

Burger Inc will donate 100 per cent of the day’s takings on 13 April to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“We raised over $5000, but this year we want to hit bigger and better!” Now in its 11th year of business, Hilal says it’s time for Burger Inc to “give back to the community”.

“The fund-raiser is not about us – it’s about our chance to give back and to get the community involved. “We will donate entirely what we make on the day – whatever we make

will go straight to the Royal Children’s Hospital.” Customers have a variety of burger options to choose from on the day, ranging from tender prime steak to blue cheese paired with friend chicken. Hilal says gourmet options like these are Burger Inc’s “point of difference”. Roasted capsicum, grilled field mushroom and chili beef burgers are also on the menu. “We always like to try something new, something different. “We intend to keep doing this fundraiser every year.” Burger Inc is open from 11.30am to 8.30pm Monday to Wenesday, 11.30am to 9pm Thursday to Saturday and 11am to 8.30pm on Sundays.

LIPSTICK on shannon

They’re right on the lips

Kelly Collisson, Marsha Davies, Gracie James and Alicia Johns are local lipstick gurus.

“Basically when you come in, you get to choose your own base – so you might choose vegan, butter, cream or matte,” Marsha explains. “Then you choose your colour and the girls will mix it with the base you’ve chosen.” Customers then trial the combination, before deciding if it’s just right or if they would like it lighter or darker.

“Once you’re settled on the colour, you can add additives, such as SPF, lip plumper, fragrances and even sparkles and foils if you want a shimmer.” Marsha’s team of four girls are all make-up gurus and love helping customers with their lipstick formulas. “We put the lipstick into the lipstick making machine and then it gets set into the mould

– the whole process takes about half an hour to do. “I wouldn’t buy lipstick anywhere else now. The four girls know all about make-up and they’re also in love with the products.” Located on Shannon Avenue for just a little over one week, The Lip Lab is already capturing the local area’s attention. “All the local businesses in

The lipstick making process at The Lip Lab.

the area have been fantastic; they’re really interested in what we do. “The Lip Lab offers something different, it’s a new concept that is quite exciting – we’re looking forward to doing hens and birthday parties here,” Marsha enthuses. The Lip Lab is at 138 Shannon Avenue, Geelong West, phone 4218 8436.

12344269-RC13-17

BY EMILY ROBINSON It’s your lipstick. From the base, colour, fragrance and even the shimmer – it’s all designed by you. That’s why cosmetic nurse injector Marsha Davies has fallen in love with The Lip Lab. Marsha, a qualified nurse, was looking for a new venture before undertaking a license agreement with The Lip Lab. Originally from a small town in north-east Victoria, Marsha and her family recently moved to Geelong for the “fantastic schooling opportunities for children”. “I’ve been a nurse for over 22 years, I’ve got a lot of experience working overseas,” she says. “I’ve been doing injectables for quite a few years now and that forms the main part of my business. “I offer anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers including lip and cheek fillers, and skin needling. “I love enhancing what my client’s already have, it’s all about the ‘less is more’ natural look.” Also very interested in lipstick and enhancing natural beauty, Marsha started looking at lipsticks available in salons. “Eventually I came across the The Lip Lab concept online,” she smiles.

GRUBguide

Allira Potter, Instagram @grub_guide

The right reason for chocolate HEY foodies, I cannot believe Easter is approaching, I feel like it was only yesterday I was talking about Christmas! I love Easter, Easter is probably one my favourite holidays for two reasons. First, chocolate ... I feel like this is a given for everyone; and second, pyjamas. Why PJs you ask? I know you’re probably laughing - but hear me out. Ever since I was little (and up until now) my grandparents have always bought me winter PJs. This is why I love Easter, it’s filled with the same tradition and so many funny memories. Normally my Easters are filled with an endless supply of sugar and greasy food but this year it’s all about being sugar free and learning how to treat myself rather than overindulging on unnecessary food. So this month I thought I’d share this amazing healthy chocolate banana cake that you can take to your family lunches on Easter Sunday. It’s gluten, dairy and refined sugar free and so easy to make. Good luck making this and don’t forget to tag us in your pictures via Instagram.

This is also freezable! So portion the cake up into smaller pieces and place in the freezer if you don’t eat it all in one go like Nate and I nearly have.

URBAN BADGE, WOMAN BOOT, SYNDROME BUTTON Dr Debra Villar (Busy Bird Publishing) Are you exhausted? No time to exercise? Do you feel stressed? Is everyday a constant juggle struggle? Then you may be suffering from Urban Woman Syndrome. The state of women’s health worldwide is at crisis point. Our modern rushed lifestyle has resulted in an increase of chronic lifestyle disorders, auto-immune diseases, infertility, stress and hormonal imbalances. Be the ultimate you.

Craig Wilcox (NLA Publishing) ’Badge, Boot, Button’ explores the army’s gradual adaptation to the environment, complete with images of original uniforms. It follows the struggle of a new country attempting to remain true to British roots while creating something new. The images in the book create a window into the past, providing the reader with images of the impractical yet dashing officer’s uniforms of colonial times and of the ’magpie’ suits worn by the worst convicts..

STILL LUCKY LION: A LONG WAY Rebecca Huntley (Penguin HOME Randomhouse) YOUNG Our politicians are READERS’ becoming more conservative, both EDITION in their policies and their ambitions for the country, but the Australian people - almost all of us - want to see real social change. We are more generous and more progressive, and more alike, than we think we are - and we are better than our day-today political discourse would suggest. Still Lucky is a broad-ranging, wise and compelling look at who we are now and where we are heading in the future, from someone who knows what Australians are really thinking.

Saroo Brierley (Penguin Randomhouse) Saroo Brierley became lost on a train in India at the age of five. Not knowing the name of his family or where he was from, he survived for weeks on the streets of Kolkata, before being taken into an orphanage and adopted by a family in Australia. Despite being happy in his new home, Saroo always wondered about his origins. One day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for.

LOOKING FOR ROSE PATERSON Jennifer Gall (National Library of Australia) Rose Isabella Paterson gave birth to a boy, Barty, in 1864. That child became the famous balladeer, Andrew Barton ’Banjo’ Paterson. In this book, we enter into the rustic world of late nineteenth-century pioneers, where women endured continuous cycles of pregnancy, childbirth and recovery, and the constraints of strict social codes. ’Looking for Rose’ recreates the world of Rose Paterson and, within the rhythm of her life, the bush childhood of ’Banjo’ Paterson.

Beefy burgers are just the Boss This Month the Voice speaks to Jamie Kolovos on the art of making ‘Boss’ burgers. You just opened a new store in Waurn Ponds. How’s that going? We opened late February and have been overwhelmed by the support we have received. We hear you’re opening another store in Leopold. What’s the timeline for that? Construction will commence in June and we will be ready for a grand opening on 17 July. We will be located near Bunnings with plenty of parking available to our customers. What are the plans for the future? We have a food truck in the works which we plan to roll out later this year that will pop up at various events and be available to hire for private functions. What’s your most popular burger? Boss Deluxe with chicken or The Henry. What’s the best thing about working in a burger joint? Apart from doing what we love, and that is cooking burgers, it’s

also about interacting with our customers. Why do you love being on Pako? Pako is a vibrant area with many good quality food operators and other retailers which make it a great destination to shop and eat. How would you describe your normal crowd? It’s a diverse demographic of all ages and we aim to cater for everyone. How hectic does it get working there? It can get hectic but with the

right systems in place and the right people it ensures for a smooth work flow. What are Tim Harrison and your brothers like to work with? It’s good fun, we all get along. We’re on the same page and we all do our best to ensure the success of Boss Burger Co. How do you enjoy Instagram fame? It’s a big part of the business which we work on and embrace, it’s one of the best tools of communication which we use to

engage with our followers. How much do you love burgers and why? Do you remember you first burger? Have you had any burgers overseas and if so what’s your favourite? We love burgers - who doesn’t? We use good quality ingredients, premium beef, freshly-baked buns and locally sourced vegetables to add to the quality of the burger. We’ve eaten plenty of burgers overseas, Shake Shack, In and Out and Fugasi in America are all stand outs.
