The 56-year-old Pakenham driver of a Toyota LandCruiser was reported to have just left Casey Hospital after a dialysis procedure.

His vehicle had crossed a Kangan Road median strip, then became airborne and struck several cars as it careered through the car park.

He was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos, of Victoria Police, said Brax’s father had “gone outside with his son, holding his hand, doing what good dads do”.

“It clearly shows they’ve got two very caring parents looking after child and this has come clean out of the sky on them.

“There’s no way you could predict this was going to happen.”

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the police investigation was ongoing.

Donations have flowed readily for the Narre Warren South family of a four-yearold boy tragically killed by a four-wheel-drive that crashed through a Berwick medical clinic car park.

Within days, more than $23,000 has been pledged on two memorial crowdfunding websites to help Brax Aidan Kyle’s grieving family.

Aaron Grant paid for the family’s monthly rent of more than $1500 out of his own pocket - and then set up a GoFundMe page that raised enough for more than two months’ rent for the family.

Mr Grant posted the initiative onto the Casey Crime Page on Facebook.

“Thankyou to every member who has so far dug deep and helped a local family of our close community,” Mr Grant said.

Mr Grant said any vouchers, food or donations would help the Kyle family “rest their son at peace” without the stress of rushing back to work.

The Casey Crime Page administrators were discussing further steps to help out, he said.

“I am very honoured and grateful for the support that our group and the local community members have shown at such a sad time.

“The rapid stream of good will brings our community closer.”

A MyCause page was also set up to support the family

“during this difficult time”, and attracted 382 donors giving more than $19,475, as of 26 April.

Well-wishers also wrote a stream of condoling messages and prayers for Brax, his brother and parents on the site.

“My heart breaks for you all,” one commented.

“Fly high little Brax. Take that smile and shine bright through those clouds.”

Flowers, teddy bears and notes have also been laid at the Kangan Drive clinic’s entrance where Brax had been struck while holding his father’s hand about noon on 21 April.

Paramedics and Epworth HealthCare staff on the spot fought to revive him shortly after the crash.

In a statement, his family thanked the community, relatives and friends for their support.

“Our darling Brax was tragically killed in a car accident,” the family wrote.

The City of Casey has teamed up with the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) and Victoria Police on a campaign aimed at driving down motor vehicle theft in Casey.

Meeting four times in March, the People’s Panel were given a crash course on Council operations and heard from a panel of experts before deliberating on the big challenge Council faces – how to address the long-term challenge of funding what Council believes it TIPVME CF EFMJWFSJOH UP GVMmM UIF DPNNVOJUZ T WJTJPO BOE XIBU JU DBO afford to deliver.

Operation Bounce Back aims to educate the community in protecting themselves from motor vehicle theft.

The panel decided on 24 recommendations which they’ve presented to Council, and they will now be used to shape the Draft 2017-21 Council Plan and 2017-18 Draft Budget.

It’s important to remember that car security begins at home, and the easiest way to avoid becoming a victim of motor vehicle theft is to reduce the opportunity for offenders.

Cut council services plea

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A people’s panel of 54 residents has given a strong message to Casey Council - don’t increase rates.

Among the panel’s 24 recommendations, there was instead a willingness to cut council services, according to a report tabled on 18 April.

Panellists also recommended higher fees for “non-essential” services and developer contributions.

The panel advised Casey to shut down services duplicated by other agencies and industries, to explore more outsourcing and to do an efficiency-review of all services.

Other People’s Panel recommendations included: Cutting labour costs by partnering with employment and volunteer programs; Improving opportunities for local business to win council tenders; Reviewing hard waste collections - such as cutting to one free collection a year or providing vouchers to dump at the tip; Live-streaming council meetings, and seeking more community feedback on major decisions and Exploring a “big employment and education attractor” to Casey.

Casey Council Mayor Sam Aziz said the People’s Panel recommendations were “outstanding” and validated the council’s efforts to better respond to residents’ needs.

The findings were being incorporated into Casey’s draft 2017-21 Council Plan, Cr Aziz said.

“Everything from the budget to our capital works priorities will be driven by the priorities outlined by the panel.

“It’s incredible what we can achieve as a community when we sit down in the spirit of co-operation and work to-

gether to try and tackle the many challenges we face as a community.”

Brendan Browne, of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association, said some of the cost-cutting recommendations should be taken with a “grain of salt” due to “an element of push-polling” by the council.

“Participants were repeatedly told of the $180 million shortfall that is supposed to befall council in 11 years’ time, despite the fact that this figure is based on highly unreliable assumptions.

“It’s not surprising that the People’s Panel findings expressed a willingness to accept reduced services and increased fees, when participants are led to believe the council is facing a financial disaster with no other solution.”

The CRRA was particularly supportive of panellists’ call for more council transparency, Mr Browne said.

He said charging more for nonessential services could be a false economy.

“If you increase charges at Casey RACE swimming pool, it may reduce the number of customers and actually cost the council money.”

The panellists, selected from a pool of 6000 invitees across a range of demographics and Casey suburbs, met four times in March to form their recommendations.

They were briefed by Casey Council about its budget challenges, including the constraint of rate-capping.

They received talks from Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association member Brendan Browne as well as urban futurist Stephen Yarwood, who talked about aiming for a ‘small council, big community’ model.

The panel was complemented by a ‘budget allocator’, which received 172 community submissions.

Submitters most popularly requested more funding for new infrastructure, planning for the future, and children, youth and family services.

The highest priorities for cuts were communications and advocacy, the arts and planning regulation.

Anzac’s letters of love

A chance find in a set of drawers has unearthed an Anzac soldier’s 100-yearold letters to a woman he hoped would be his sweetheart.

Former Casey mayor Rob Wilson, of Narre Warren, has self-published more than 20 of the discovered letters and cards of Sergeant Dudley Wood in his book Lost Letters.

The World War I letters were written by Sgt Wood to Edie Talbett - the sister of his best mate Norman. More than a muse, she was also someone that Sgt Wood was keen upon.

“How many other young blokes over in the war had a girlfriend back home?” Mr Wilson said.

“And they hope against hope not only that they survive, but that they still have a girl if they get back.”

At 72, Mr Wilson, a keen family historian, had recently collated primary history into books about his Scottish-immigrant father and his triple-great-grandmother.

“I was excited that these letters written 100 years ago were now discovered 100 years later.

“I have a study full of history stuff.

“If I give all of that to one person, it will probably get thrown out, so I decided to put that history into a book.“ In this most recent collection, Sgt Wood’s letters reveal a “feisty” relationship with Edie. Ultimately, they both married other people.

He moved to the Tasmanian city of Launceston, had a family with an Irish nurse Martha Shannon who cared for him during the war, and worked as a dental technician.

On 2 January, 1917, he wrote - rather flippantly - to Edie that he lost his right leg just above the knee. The injury caused lingering pain and dashed

“A bit of stiff luck but worse things happen at sea,” Sgt Wood wrote.

“Now take my advice, stick to your own legs. Don’t go out for a walk and lose them as it is a painful thing, but if you give any cheek, I will be able to swipe you with it.”

There was then a break in Sgt Wood’s letters to Edie. He put it down to getting such a shock hearing that she was engaged.

“Allow me to congratulate you on having such a good fellow, but of

course, it has been a great blow to me.

“I have had my eye on you for a long time now, but I have been too shy to pop the question and now it is too late.”

Sgt Wood was wounded during the AIF’s first landing in Gallipoli in April 1915.

According to an extract from Sgt Wood’s journal, he “got a bullet through my cap; then shrapnel took my rations; later a bullet bored a hole in my mess tin, and I was struck in five places by shrapnel.”

He convalesced from his wounds during a “holiday” in Malta in May, and wrote to Edie: “We got some hurry up the first day as we landed under fire and had to take every foot of ground while we had no artillery to back us up.

“You have no idea what it is like till you are there to see for yourself.

“You will hear all about things in the papers I suppose, so it is no good me telling you, but you get more excitement out of it than shooting at rabbits.”

He was awarded a Distinguished

Conduct Medal for conspicuous bravery.

On 20 August 1915, Sgt Wood solemnly wrote to his best friend Norman’s mother to offer his “deepest sympathy”.

He told her that Norman had died, minutes before he was due to be relieved of his post at Lone Pine, Gallipoli.

A photo of Norman’s grave “in sight of the sea on the first hill” at Gallipoli was taken by Sgt Wood and sent to the bereaved mother.

Norman and he had been among the first Australians to enlist for the war.

In reply to Edie, he writes in October about finding out about her late brother Norman’s demise.

“It broke me up for the rest of the day, and we have lost a good pal, but he is as well off as here, and one never knows whose turn it will be next, just as God wills.”

The letters were recently found among papers in a set of drawers by Edie Talbett’s grand-daughter, Patricia Greenwood-Smith.

She contacted Sgt Wood’s daughter-in-law Betty in Launceston, who in turn excitedly told her cousin - the book’s author Mr Wilson.

In his book, Mr Wilson has added letters written by Sgt Wood’s brother Vasey, who also fought in World War I where he was killed.

There are also letters, photos and biographies of Mr Wilson’s relatives who performed military service, including George Connelly Hazlett - a Boer War veteran and a World War I Lighthorseman who fought in the famous charge in Beersheba.

Mr Wilson has more family history projects on the go. For him it’s a race to get as much down in books before that history is cast away.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells La Trobe MP Jason Wood has maintained his rage against “gangs” of South Sudanese and Pacific Islander youths, despite police “breaking the back of Apex”.

Mr Wood, who is chairing a federal parliamentary inquiry into migrant settlement outcomes, said the Apex gang had grown rapidly since “perpetuating” the 2016 Moomba riots.

It was “engulfing other gangs and becoming more violent and daring by the day”.

“Most members of these violent youth gangs like Apex are of Sudanese or Islander descent and are often new migrants to our country,” he said.

Victoria Police’s Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton reportedly told the inquiry on 12 April that Apex was a “non-entity”.

Police had charged most of the gang’s leaders, who were now in jail. The group was “in recession”, Deputy Commissioner Patton said.

The inquiry heard that numbers of Victorian youth offenders born in New Zealand and South Sudan were “over-represented” compared to their population numbers.

Young people born in South Sudan made up 1.56 per cent of alleged youth offenders in Victoria, even though South Sudanese account for 0.23 per cent of the youth population, according to official crime statistics.

Casey Council had no detailed statistics on migrant youth committing “anti-social behaviour” in its municipality, according to its inquiry submission.

There was data supporting an increase in youth crime, particularly in low socio-economic pockets of Casey, the council’s community life director Steve Coldham wrote.

Mr Wood said police had indicated they’d “broken the back of Apex” but “it’s important to understand that young criminals like this don’t have a formalised structure like other bikie gangs”.

“It’s more complex to determine whether or not they’re gone.

“The issue that is still very apparent is that when it comes to aggravated burglary and riots and affrays, Sudanese youth come in at second, and when it comes to serious assaults they’re third highest on the list.”

Mr Wood said much of the evidence at the hearing focused on employment and community involvement.

On 19 April, Mr Wood chaired a round table with Casey and Cardinia mayors, Les Twentyman and community groups on ‘breaking down barriers’ with young offenders.

The forum looked at using sport as a way to keep young people busy and avoiding boredom.

Mr Wood has also proposed “one-strike” bail laws for serious, violent crimes, and backed the Federal Government’s deportation of young people on visas for violent offences.

He would also specifically tackle violent youth gangs with a database on gangs, and a joint statefederal police anti-gang taskforce in Melbourne’s

west and south-east.

Mr Wood said a collaborative approach, including better targeted services for migrant youths, was needed to ensure young people didn’t “fall into this Apex abyss”.

Centre for Multicultural Youth, in its submission to the inquiry, warned that deporting youth offenders was “disproportionate and inappropriate”.

“Government and political leaders must cast aside media pressure, consider the facts and the evidence about what works and without panic develop and oversee the implementation of effective social policy.”

Casey Council had submitted to the inquiry that the issue was compounded by a lack of migrant settlement services, lack of federal crime prevention grants and lack of funding to support socially isolated migrant parents.

If unclaimed within a six-month “grace period”, the $509,614.77 prize will be banked by the Victorian State Revenue Office.

Ms Lewis said it was important for players to register with Tatts, so their winnings were secured and would be contacted directly if they won.

Letters Avoiding the danger So after the reported (News - 20 April) unfortunate death of a bike rider recently, the solution is to drive slower and building bike lanes and trails.

As someone who both drives and until recently had a bike the obvious answer in part, is NOT to ride on main roads or roads where there is increased traffic. Pakenham is blessed with nice footpaths and tracks already, eg Toomuc Creek.

What arrant nonsense by the RPM person to make comparisons between Pakenham and Europe/Asia.

The tyranny of distance that we face here, the topography, the indifferent public transport and the need for commuting to and from work makes the car a necessity rather than a convenience for many. We are not a scaled-up version of Copenhagen/Stockholm etc. Talk about comparing apples with oranges.

The knee-jerk solution is to create bike

lanes which compound the problem by creating bottlenecks and increases congestion, nose to tail accidents and increased risk-taking behaviour including the now daily “road rage“ incidents.

Just have a look at the daily Monash Freeway debacle and streets where these so called “initiatives“ are in use in inner city suburbs. You may wish to review Monash safety figures too? The facts don’t necessarily reflect the warm and fuzzy rhetoric.

Why any person other than a MAMIL or MAWIL would want to ride on main roads which are in part funded to a much larger degree by motorists is beyond me and rather targeting them perhaps Sgt Ziebell should be concentrating on cyclists without helmets, crossing roads on the red, riding across roads on school/pedestrian crossings, unsupervised bike riding children in streets, bikes without lights/reflectors, tandem abreast riding and poorly maintained bikes with bald tyres to start with. Then Messrs Ziebell and Moonen you might wish to start on cyclist training too.

If you are serious about safety, stay away from the things that are going to hurt you - it's simple.

In response to a motion led by Mayor Aziz in Casey Council on 18 April.

While I fully support and advocate the removal of graffiti, I find the actions of council riddled with hypocrisy.

All Casey ratepayers will pay for signage in an effort to shame State Government representatives into action, signage attached with phone numbers and statements of responsibility.

Which leads me to the definition of hypocrisy - “the behaviour of people who do things that they tell other people not to do“.

Mayor Aziz, please explain.

Why did council give a real estate agent four hours on a wet Friday afternoon to remove a signage board ?

Why did council threaten legal prosecution on another private resident with a daily $750 fine for signage on his private property?

Why has council threatened a “covert operation“ on residents of Berwick Springs when they want to name and shame the fact that you as our ward councillor and Casey Council as a whole did not consult thousands of Berwick Springs residents as far back as 2014 on a proposal that will see nearly 200 trees cut down from our parklands and entry?

Why have you turned your back by refusing to answer emails and calls?

Why is it and I allege you have instructed your councillors not to attend public rallies held by residents or accept personal invites with residents to hear their concerns?

Why have you instructed Casey planners not to attend meetings when other councillors have tried to facilitate their own meetings, with or without you?

Why have several councillors personally called me and I allege apologised for your appalling behaviour, in their words ?

Where is your apology?

Why do you refuse to answer questions on record raised by residents in public question time at council meetings on several occasions?

Why do you refer to name calling of residents and admit it on record in council?

Cr Aziz as mayor of Casey and our ward councillor maybe Berwick Springs residents should display your number on their signs (funded by themselves not ratepayers) in an effort to display their feeling of betrayal on your council’s behalf.

Finally, why did you and your council vote on 21 February to protect the rights of a developer in “ fairness“ over the rights of 3000 residents who you have failed to consult to this very day - or advocate on their behalf in response to the mess your council was part of?

Our council has a strategy to develop pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure; a draft was published in January this year and council was seeking community responses.

The vision is grand, but realistic, yet the challenges faced by council will be very significant. It is not just about the money, but it is all about our community supporting council as it has to deal with the myriad of stakeholders who will say that it is all too hard and we do not need any of it.

It is time for all of us to realise that our roads do not need to be made significantly safer; we need more people driving more safely and we need dedicated paths for walkers and riders alike. We won’t improve our

road accident rates by all staying at home cowered by the possibility of becoming a statistic. We won’t grow as individuals and community until we acknowledge our need to reflect on the past, look beyond the present and dream of a future that will allow the changes that are needed to become reality, if not for ourselves then definitely for our children.

I don’t ever remember meeting Ken, and in thinking of his grieving family, I wonder if there is any better way for any of us to honour him than in supporting council in turning the council’s vision into reality - dedicated paths for walkers and bike-riders throughout the whole shire.

A former Cranbourne resident and ex-serviceman has called for changes to the way we remember and support our returned defence force personnel.

Sean Mulqueen grew up in Cranbourne and was sent on a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2010 where he was injured by an improvised explosive device.

Mr Mulqueen was in Afghanistan for seven months before he was returned home and found the transition back to civilian life to be a struggle.

“When I returned home I was at a bit of a loss; I suffered from my injuries that have left both physical and mental scars,” he said.

“As much as the system tried to help, it had a lot of gaps.”

It was through learning from his own experiences that Mr Mulqueen started dedicating his time to helping other returned service people find meaning in their lives again.

“I got involved with a couple of blokes call Brett and Rupert from Brisbane, and we put some initiatives together getting returned vets into work programs like painting and yard work and things like that.”

Mr Mulqueen has also been involved in numerous fund-raising and awareness raising events to help families who have lost members at war and help returned soldiers back to civilian life.

However, Mr Mulqueen would like to see the way Australian veterans are supported by government and community improved overall.

“While we are lucky we have process at all, it is outdated,” he said.

Dogs too paid the ultimate sacrifice

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A puppet show has described the little-known role of ‘man’s best friend’ in World War I to Berwick Lodge Primary School students.

The Messenger Dogs travelling show on 20 and 21 April enacted the stories of dogs Nell, Trick and Bullet who carried messages between headquarters and the front line.

About 80,000 dogs assisted Anzac troops by carrying messages, bandages, small supplies as well as offering companionship.

Assistant principal Sandra McCrum said students learnt more about the sacrifices made not only by men and women but also animals.

“It told tales of courage, determination and mateship that captured the hearts and minds of young Victorians.”

Diamonds of love endure

By Cam Lucadou-Wells For Berwick husband and wife Bob and Jean Halley-Frame, it started with a blind date to the local “picture theatre” in England.

Two years later, on 20 April 1957, the English-born couple married at Emmanuel Church, London.

Four generations of family graced the occasion of the pair's 60th wedding anniversary at Cardinia Hotel, Beaconsfield, on Sunday 23 April.

“It was a pretty special day,” son Robert said.

“They like to be closer to home with their family and friends, their two kids, five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.”

They had the extra thrill of receiving a congratulatory letter from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull - with the promise of further good tidings from Queen Elizabeth II in the post.

Bob, 87, and Jean, 82, remain in good health, living independently and regularly singing and keeping active at Narre Community Learning Centre.

They moved out to Australia with children Robert and Lesley in 1964 after Mr Halley-Frame spotted a local newspaper ad promising a better life down under.

Injection of commonsense

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Australian Sex Party leader Fiona Patten has declared Cranbourne was never a part of her proposed trial of medically-supervised safe-injecting rooms in Richmond.

Ms Patten - who is leading a state parliamentary enquiry into the trial - attacked Casey Council’s “strong” opposition to any safe-injecting rooms in the municipality on 18 April.

“Where the council gets this idea that a centre will move to Cranbourne is beyond me.

“There’s never been a suggestion that a safe-injecting room would be based in Cranbourne.

“The only place it came from was from (South-East Metropolitan MP) Inga Peulich. She somehow decided that was the case.

“It certainly wasn’t me and I was the mother of the proposal.”

Ms Patten also took aim at Premier Daniel Andrews and State Opposition leader Matthew Guy, telling them to “put their dicks down” and drop their opposition to the 12-month trial.

It was backed by a Coroner’s Court recommendation for a safe injecting centre in Richmond, as well as by local doctors, traders, paramedics and residents, Ms Patten says.

There had been 34 overdoses in Richmond in the past year.

“In Richmond, everyone wants it. We’ve got every single agency on side but Matthew Guy and Daniel Andrews aren’t going to do it because it’s not ‘tough on crime’.”

She said according to research, all of the 100 safe-injecting sites around the world had reduced overdoses, ambulance call-outs, used

“There has been no increase in drug dealing in these areas.”

Police around Australia’s only safe-injecting centre in Kings’ Cross in Sydney had found it to be “brilliant”, Ms Patten said.

“Rather than dealing with drug overdoses and people hitting up in the streets, they’re dealing with the drug traffickers, burglaries and those types of crimes.“ Ms Patten directly refuted Casey Cr Gary Rowe’s claim that fatal “hot shots” could be delivered in a safe-injecting room.

“There’s never been an overdose in a safe-injecting room,” she said.

Ms Patten, who is also involved in a drug-law reform inquiry at State Parliament, said Victoria was “behind the eight-ball” in drug treatment and needed a “holistic” approach.

“We know that safe-injecting rooms help people get to treatment and on the path to rehabilitation. It’s the best way to reduce harm.

“We speak to parents of drug addicts who died. They say if only our son and daughter could be saved before their drug overdose.

“We need to focus on saving lives.”

She said jailing drug addicts didn’t deal with the underlying causes of their addiction.

“The safe injection centre by taking people off the streets and get them talking to a social worker is the best response to law-and-order.

“We’ve tried more CCTV, more police, increasing penalties for drug users ... these approaches haven’t worked.”

Councillor Susan Serey, who introduced the motion at an 18 April meeting, said Cranbourne had been mentioned in State Parliament as an illicit drug hotspot.

The suburb might be one of the first locations if “drug injecting rooms” were introduced, she said.

The injecting-room approach was “soft”, encouraged illicit drug use and drug trafficking and sent the “wrong message” to young people.

The issue was better tackled by more drug rehabilitation facilities, with Victoria well behind NSW’s 800 available beds, Cr Serey said.

The state inquiry into the safeinjecting room trial reports back in September.

Salon staff take unfair haircut

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A hairdressing chain with a salon in Fountain Gate has underpaid staff across Melbourne an estimated $288,000, according to the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Siajj Pty Ltd, which operates Best Cuts and 67 Colours in Fountain Gate, was found to have underpaid 48 staff a total of $88,000 at its Wantirna South salons between January 2015 and July 2016.

Due to Siajj’s “inadequate record-keeping”, FWO inspectors were unable to calculate the total underpayments for 150 staff across seven salons.

FWO estimates a further $200,000 may be owed to the remaining workers.

“When we come across inadequate recordkeeping that prevents our inspectors from determining whether employees are receiving their minimum entitlements, we take these matters very seriously”, Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said.

Siajj had failed to pay correct minimum wages, casual loading, weekend and public holiday penalty rates, annual leave loading and leave loading upon termination.

It also failed to implement written agreements for part-time staff, didn’t keep adequate records for part-timers and casuals and incorrectly accrued annual leave entitlements.

As a result of the breaches, Siajj has entered an enforceable undertaking with the FWO. The undertaking includes a comprehensive review of its payment systems at its other five salons, including the Fountain Gate outlet, and to pay back outstanding wages.

It has also agreed to write apologies to affected employees, to publish an apology on Facebook and make a $10,000 “contrition payment” to Springvale Monash Legal Service.

Tony’s ride one of a kind

By Cam Lucadou-Wells It’s no exaggeration to say Tony Burrage’s unique open-air racer, the Rennmax 23B is a one-of-a-kind.

The stylish 52-year-old vehicle built by Sydney racing-car builder Bob Britton is the only one in Australia, according to Mr Burrage.

A long fan of historic racing, Mr Burrage, of Narre Warren North, chose the low-slung car to race during his retirement from mechanical engineering 18 years ago.

He doesn’t mind racing in the open air, though “when it’s raining, it’s not too bright”.

“It drives quite well when you learn how to handle it,” he says.

“You know any car built by Bob

Britton will be a good one.”

Mr Burrage loved the car as a near exact copy of the alluring Lotus 23B shape - at a fraction of the price of a similar-vintage Lotus.

But it was in poor shape at the time.

The enthusiast has since tended to the car, making it mechanically sound and gleaming with a lick of British Racing Green paint.

Along the way, he was surprised to find out there are 29 subtly different tints of British Racing Green.

Though without a speedo, the car - with its rebuilt 1600-cc twincam rear-mounted engine - hits estimated speeds of up to 180 km/h on the track.

It however feels faster than that, being low to the ground - and particularly when he’s approached a corner too fast, Mr Burrage says.

Mr Burrage races it in historic racing meets about five times a year, including one of his favourite tracks at Winton.

He’ll be heading to the Historic Winton weekend with 400 riders and drivers and displays of 2000 historic vehicles on 27 and 28 May.

Side by side, veterans and Fountain Gate Secondary College students paid their respects to Australia’s fallen servicepeople at an Anzac Day ceremony at the school on 24 April.

The full ceremony, including the laying of wreaths, a school concert band and bearing of flags from 13 nations, schools, groups and municipalities, was attended by pipers Ian Arrell and Alistair Wright and bugler Andrew Bryce.

Also observing the service was Vic Dey, Tom Parkinson, Allan and Nicole Evenden of Korean Veterans Association of Australia, and Commander Matthew Ferguson of HMAS Cerberus.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Are you thinking about joining or starting a relay for life team to help raise funds for the Cancer Council, but don’t know where to start?

The Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life is holding a launch night on 19 May and is inviting all established teams and any interested residents along to find out more about the event.

The launch will be far from a dry information evening and will include entertainment, food, door prizes, and interactive activities about the relay for life event.

Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life volunteer committee member Brooke Hunter said the launch events were always informative but also a lot of fun.

“Every year our committee holds a launch event to inform teams of changes but we also hope teams will bring along people interested in joining,” she said.

“A lot of people have seen but not experienced the relay, so we make these launches fun and interactive and work as a team to bring new people in.”

Over the last five years, Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life has raised $358,389 for cancer research and the 2017 fund-raising goal is set at $60,000 so the group is always looking for new participants.

“Invite your Relay for Life team and friends as the launch is guaranteed to be enjoyable and will ensure, together, we all will make CranbourneNarre 2017 Relay for Life a success,” Ms Hunter said.

“Committee members will also be sharing their experiences with this terrible illness and encourage others to do the same in our supportive atmosphere, but this is by no means compulsory.”

The Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life launch will be held on Friday 19 May at 7.30pm at the Casey Fields Athletics Track.

The 2017 Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life fund-raising major event is scheduled for 18 and 19 November.

Rain greeted the big day

By Bonny Burrows Under the pitter-patter of constant rain, the Berwick community huddled around the town’s cenotaph.

Residents, war veterans, politicians and students all came together on 25 April with one purpose: “On this day, above all days, we remember those Australian men and women who died or suffered in the great tragedy of war.”

Berwick’s Anzac Day 2017 was a touching affair and one that stirred up many emotions.

Local community groups, politicians and schoolchildren all laid wreaths as part of the service, pausing as they did so to take a moment to reflect.

And in a last-minute change of speakers, Vietnam veteran Ray Heathcote spoke of the tragedy of war and the significant losses his family had experienced on the battlefield.

He was one of the lucky ones, he said.

His grandfather was gassed in WWI, paying the ultimate price for the freedom of his country and one of many to do so.

This was why Anzac Day was important.

“We gather to acknowledge those who paid the ultimate price for those things we take for granted today,” Mr Heathcote said.

Standing in the pouring rain, the weight of his sombre speech fell heavy on those in attendance.

Many were impressed by Mr

Berwick Girl Guides joined the march. 167602 Heathcote’s honesty, leaving the service with a greater appreciation for our war heroes.

In particular, former Star News journalist Jim Mynard walked away inspired to put pen to paper.

In Mr Heathcote’s honour he wrote the following poem, which perhaps sums up Berwick’s commemoration service perfectly: Old soldiers march.

Heading for the cenotaph.

Some are old and some are young.

Men and women march abreast because they served as one.

Each with thoughts a thousandfold.

Each with reason to be marching in the pelting rain on Berwick streets.

The more information you can get on qualification the better - as well as all the costs associated with purchasing.

Traditionally, mortgage brokers are affiliated with an aggregator (ie: Mortgage Choice, Aussie) meaning they will operate under a recognised brand name, but basically run their own operation.

Dealing with mortgage brokers affiliated to specific aggregators can also reduce your ability to test the lending market usually these aggregators have accreditation with only a certain number of lenders. The bigger the aggregator, the more lenders they can source loans through.

So where do you start? You can come and visit me - I would love the opportunity to assist, obligation free of course! But if it’s not me you see first, the next best option is to start with a mortgage broker. For the reasons above, mortgage brokers have access to a greater distribution of lenders and their loan products.

They can also give you qualification on the spot. If you aren’t quite ready for a mortgage application, they can provide you with a solid plan to get you in a position where you will be able to meet the lending requirements of the major banks. Ask plenty of questions, expect good information and answers so that you can be educated on the requirements of applying for a mortgage.

Young children will be the centre of attention at Apple Blossoms Early Learning’s free open day on Saturday, 29 April, from 10am to 2pm.

The Narre Warren-based childcare and kindergarten service, owned and operated by four families, is opening its doors to the community to celebrate the completion of renovations and official launch of its huge new, naturebased adventure playground for underfives.

Free family fun will be the order of the day, with a range of interactive games and activities on offer including aerial silks, art and craft, face painting and, of course, getting close to nature on the fully landscaped playground made of all natural materials.

Children will have a ball playing in the tepee, bamboo tunnel and wonky spine of the playground, pumping water into the rocky river bed or relaxing

Rebecca’s Olympics dream

By Nick Creely The accolades for 15-year-old Rebecca Henderson are coming faster than her ability to complete a triathlon.

With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics merely three years away, the young athlete is doing everything in her power to represent the country she loves.

Rebecca, from Berwick, recently travelled to Sydney Olympic Park to compete in the Athletics Australia National Championships, where she won the Under 17 Girls 5km Racewalk National Championship - her fourth overall win in what has been a remarkable junior career to date.

The Casey Cardinia Athletics Club product said it was an honour to represent Victoria and to claim another piece of the puzzle in her aim for Olympic glory.

“It was very exciting - I’ve raced at the Sydney track a few times and done quite well so I was hoping I could do the same this time,” she said.

“It is a great feeling to represent your State and it felt great to win the National Championship again. I was very happy as it was my main goal for race-walking for the year.”

Rebecca is also prominent in the world of Open Water Swimming, where she only months ago came eighth in Australia at the Australian Open Water Championships, as well as triathlons, in which she excels more than any junior in the state.

She said training is hard work and gets

her to the level needed to perform, but it’s something she enjoys and thrives on.

“I really enjoy doing the training so that makes it a lot easier,” she said.

“I have a really good training squad for race-walking with Simon Baker and my swim training is with Casey Tigersharks.

“I just make sure I am really organised so that I can fit in everything that I want to do while also keeping up with my school work.

“The ultimate goal for me would be to represent Australia at the Olympics. If I keep training hard and enjoying myself I believe I can get there.”

In Penrith, just last week, Rebecca shone brightly in the Triathlon Championships, coming ninth overall in the country and first among a talented bunch of Victorian athletes.

It’s not the first time in the last twelve months that she has put her name up in lights - announcing her name on the big stage by claiming glory in the Sprint Distance at Challenge Melbourne for 15 to19-year-olds and then finishing third overall in the Elite Females in Race 5 of the Active Tri-Series at Mordialloc on 19 March, she then was the first female across the line over all ages in the Channel Challenge in San Remo.

Still fairly new to the Triathlon scene, Rebecca said she fell in love with the sport due to the multi-dimensional style in which you need to perform.

“I did a few for fun but I didn’t really like the bike riding that much at the start as I wasn’t very experienced at it but then I tried out for the Triathlon Victoria Development Program and got in and my enjoyment for the sport has really grown.

“I love training and racing in all three disciplines now even though the swim is my best and favourite leg of the race.”

Demons ready to face their biggest challenge

By David Nagel The menacing and imposing figure of former Brisbane champion Jonathan Brown looms large on the horizon for the South East Football Netball League as it looks to extend its unbeaten run in the AFL Victoria Community Championships.

Brown will coach the Hampden League into battle against the Demons at Casey Fields on Saturday 13 May, his presence attracting a strong commitment from players from Portland to Port Fairy - from Warrnambool to Camperdown.

SEFNL coach Michael ‘Jock’ Holland, preparing his fifth consecutive interleague campaign, said the stakes had grown higher with Brown as the enemy.

“I know a lot of their guys have committed this year, with Browny on board, but that’s great for us, it gives us the opportunity to take on one of the best leagues in the state at full strength,” Holland said.

“As a coaching staff we’ve discussed it and we’re in no doubt that this is definitely the biggest challenge we have confronted in the last five years.

I’ve been talking it up for years, that I firmly believe we have the goods to be one of the top five leagues in the state and our best will be good enough.

“As a coaching staff, we’re not shying away from the challenge, we just need a strong commitment from the players and I think this could be a pretty special interleague campaign.”

Holland, an interleague star during his playing days at Pakenham, has led

the SEFNL brilliantly over the last four years, taking the scalps of Wimmera, Bellarine, Sunraysia and Murray after Matt Shinners had steered the first ship to port against Nepean.

“We’re getting to the stage now where we are being rewarded for the efforts put in by a lot people,” Holland said.

“Collo (Michael Collins) and Holty (Marc Holt) have been the faces of interleague football for years but blokes like Troy McDermott, Brandon Osborne, Micky Harold, they’re coming up for the fifth campaigns and have been terrific contributors over the journey.

“I just think for those blokes it would be terrific if their peers recognised their commitment, jumped on board, and we come together as one for this challenge.”

A large squad trained together for the first time at Casey Fields on Wednesday night, 26 April.

Holland said the prospect of having ruckman Scott Meyer, Russell Gabriel and O’hAilpin all playing on the same side was mouth-watering indeed.

“They all bring something completely different to the table,” he said.

“Russ is your old fashioned powerhouse ruckman, O’hAilpin is athletic and tough and strong in the clinches and Scotty could play anywhere on the park he’s that versatile.”

Holland was keen to get the local football community on board.

“The interleague concept is special, it’s special footy played by the best

players in country Victoria and will be the best footy the supporters will see all year,” he said.

“I promise there will be at least one or two kids who get selected and they’ll thrive on the big stage, it’s been that way for years. We’ll select the boys who want to play, we’ve done it that way in the past and that way we get a consistent performance, year in, year out.”

Stingrays in a stumble

By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - ROUND 4 The Dandenong Stingrays’ wobbly start to the 2017 season has continued, falling to the still unbeaten Sandringham Dragons by 21-points at Frankston Oval on Saturday.

In front of a solid bayside crowd, the Rays looked the goods early, kicking the first two majors of the contest and looking sharp by foot.

The Dragons pegged it back later in the first-quarter, notably through impressive youngster Aaron Trusler (four goals) to gain a three-point lead at quarter-time.

It was even once more in the second, with both sides able to make the most of their opportunities going forward, but it was the Rays, through key playmakers Mason De Wit and Hunter Clark, who were able to get enough drive off the half-back line to gain the lead back at half-time.

But despite the effort and intensity remaining consistent, skill execution lacked in the second-half, with some horrific turnovers inviting the Dragons to punish them on transition.

Max Lohan (31 disposals, 16 marks and a goal) was particularly devastating in the secondhalf with his penetrating left leg for the Dragons, with the Rays unable to stop them spreading the ball and streaming forward.

But just before three-quarter-time, and with the Rays down by 22-points, a moment of utter brilliance from Hunter Clark kept them alive.

From the centre-bounce, the damaging midfielder, who is seen as a potential first-round draft pick, streamed out of the centre, and with a kick that Dustin Martin would be proud of, launched the ball 55 metres straight through the goals.

Clark then backed it up early in the fourth with a classy snap from near the pocket, but the Rays were unable to penetrate the lines like the Dragons, who ran out convincing winners.

VFL REVIEW - ROUND 2 Casey Demons have shaken off a spirited North Ballarat, registering their first win of 2017 by 46-points on Saturday night at Casey Fields.

The Roosters, coming off a demoralising 188-point loss to Richmond last week, were always going to come out breathing fire and did just so with their intent early.

In slippery conditions, the Demons and Roosters struggled early to gain any control over the contest, with some basic skills errors marring both sides early.

Not much separated the two sides at quarter-time, with the Demons holding a slender two-point advantage despite the Roosters having more shots on goal.

The Demons adapted quicker to the conditions in the second term, kicking four unanswered goals before the Roosters struck back late to peg the margin back to 28-points at half-time.

Bailey Fritsch, who had a strong three-goal first half, got on the board early in the third, while the excitement machine, Aloysio Ferreira, upped the ante to help his side control the contest.

But the star of the third was Melbourne-listed player Tommy Bugg, who kicked consecutive goals in a matter of minutes to take the game away in one swift movement.

The Demons sing the song with gusto after registering their first victory of 2017.

The Roosters did keep coming though, booting three quick goals to close the margin to an attainable but unlikely 30-point buffer, as the Demons lost some focus and were unable to execute their skills.

But they produced a strong five-goal last term to overpower the gallant Roosters and claim the four points.

Bugg (35 disposals, 11 marks, seven tackles and five goals) was the star of the show, and Coach Justin Plapp was full of praise for the midfielder.

“It was nearly a complete game at VFL level,” Plapp said.

“He’s been dropped and comes out and responds that way; it’s a credit to him.”

Others to put in strong games were Mitch White (28 disposals), Eddie Morris (27), while Bailey Fritsch continues

to electrify, snagging four goals in an impressive display and Alyosio Ferreira is well and truly putting his name on the whiteboards for AFL recruiters after impressing with his elite skills.

Plapp was proud of his group’s response considering a short six-day break.

“The way the boys responded after playing on Monday, and with North Ballarat throwing a fair bit at us, I’m proud of them,” he said.

But of particular concern was yet another concussion to Melbourne youngster Angus Brayshaw, who has now been concussed three times in the last twelve months.

“He copped a head knock,” Plapp said.

“It’s unfortunate for him because he has had a few hits over the last few years, but hopefully he’s okay.”

The Demons will make the trip over to Simonds Stadium on Saturday to tackle Geelong, who are coming off a 52-point loss to Port Melbourne.

Eagles clip Magpies wings

By David Nagel It may have slipped under the radar during the pre-season, but Beaconsfield is now fully in the South East Football Netball League spotlight after a gutsy 26-point victory over Narre Warren.

The Eagles travelled to Kalora Park with a massive task ahead, trying to win just its second home-and-away fixture against the Magpies in 13 years.

All the pre-season talk centred on Narre Warren’s strong pre-season recruiting and how the Magpies looked set to throw down the gauntlet to both Berwick and Cranbourne.

Meanwhile, down at Holm Park Reserve, a new coaching staff was appointed, some solid but unspectacular types were brought in, and what’s proving to be the best young crop of youngsters in the competition were slowly on the improve.

But the lid has now been blown on the Eagles after a desperate win, built on brilliant ball

movement down back and some blistering leg speed that caught the Magpies napping.

“Ball movement has been a heavy focus of ours in the preseason, not so much who has the footy in their hands, but where we want the football and how we want to release it,” said Beaconsfield coach Leigh McQuillen.

“Narre Warren plays their ground well. They probably went in thicker and harder while we picked a side well equipped to use the whole ground. Maybe we surprised them a bit, they would be used to a different style of play from Beaconsfield, but our lateral ball movement is a big part of what we do now.”

Nick Scanlon gave the Magpies the early lead in the first term before the Eagles took command.

Josh Dodsworth’s brilliant pressure around the contest saw him feed Beau Dowler for the reply, before goals to Michael Misso, Daniel Johnston, Dodsworth, Kyle Van Der Pluym

and Dowler again on the siren gave the Eagles a 35-point lead at the first change.

The Magpies fought back, kicking 7.4 to 2.3 in the second term to close the margin to four points.

But Beacy refocused after a half-time scuffle to kick the only two goals in the third, and then kicked three goals to one in the final term for a very courageous victory.

The pressure of half-forwards Dodsworth and Kyle Van der Pluym was rewarded; Dodsworth with best-on-ground honours while Van der Pluym was his side’s leading goal kicker with three. Ruckman Scott Meyer was typically brilliant, while Jake Bowd and Corey Walker were inspirational down back.

Scanlon was magnificent for the Magpies, kicking four goals and having a tremendous influence around the ground.

In other games, reigning premier Cranbourne had to fight hard for its 15-point victory

over a brave Tooradin at Casey Fields.

The Eagles led by 25 points at the main break but had that margin cut to single digits midway through the last term. Ryan Jones, Nathan Gardiner and Zak Roscoe kicked two each for the Eagles while Nick Lang kicked five of his six goals in the second half for the Seagulls.

Gulls ruckman Aisakie O’Hailpin was the dominant big man on the ground.

In other games, Officer gained Princes Highway bragging rights with a 44-point victory over Pakenham while Berwick kicked the sweep, cracking the 200-point barrier in its 159-point win over Hampton Park.

Brody Connelly kicked six for the Wickers who had Michael Riseley play a lead role across half back. Luke O’Brien kicked three for the Redbacks who now face some clearer waters after an extremely tough start to the season.

Beacy girls down Magpies

By David Nagel Beaconsfield has finally ended the magnificent 21game winning streak of Narre Warren with a spectacular 49-46 victory over the Magpies in a classic contest at Kalora Park.

Last year’s grand finalists went head to head; the Eagles cracking the game open with a stunning 15-9 third quarter to take a fivegoal lead to the final change.

Beaconsfield coach Simon O’Shanassy was thrilled with the standard of netball.

“It was a great game of netball, it was a clean fierce contest played in the spirit that netball should be played,” O’Shanassy said.

“It was a great game and it took our very best to beat them. They’re Narre Warren and they’ve won 21 games in a row for a reason.

They’re well-drilled, wellstructured and really play well as a team.”

And it’s a team that suffered some major hiccups on the weekend.

The Magpies regular goal-scoring force of Gabrielle Dwyer and Tayla Shannon was missing for most of the day. Dwyer was in Canberra with elite netball duties while Shannon suffered a nasty injury in the first term.

“I’m great friends with Tayla and it was really sad to see her go down, hopefully everything is fine with her,” O’Shanassy said.

Goaler Bianca Sanzaro (goal shooter) held her nerve for the Eagles while Kate Murphy (wing defence ) was solid and Ash Gill (wing attack) made a big contribution after hitting the

court in the second half.

Erin Clark (WD), Chloe Phillips (GS) were terrific over four quarters for the Magpies.

Tooradin is primed to take on the reigning backto-back champions after consolidating top spot with a 47-32 victory over Cranbourne at Casey Fields.

But the Eagles made life difficult for the visitors in the first quarter.

Cranbourne defenders Tara Cecil (goal defence) and Hailey Galpin (goal keeper) kept a close watch on Tooradin goalers, smartAlexes Duff (goal shooter) and Maher (goal attack), while Steph Ryan (centre) kept paces with Shona Wells in the midcourt.

But the Seagulls slowly got on top, extending their two-goal lead to seven at half time before opening up the turbos after the break.

The Seagulls showed premiership-contending form in the third term, with Jess Cox moving from wing attack to goal attack and having a major impact, scoring 12 goals for the quarter.

There were some positive outcomes for Cranbourne. Kayla Wilson (C) took control of the midcourt in the final term leading the Eagles to an 11-10 advantage to finish off the match.

Hampton Park has chalked up its first win of the season with a 46-34 victory over a brave Berwick at Robert Booth Reserve.

The home side had the better of a dour first term, leading 8-4 at the first break before stretching that fourgoal lead to 10 at the major interval.

Numbers soar in women’s league

By David Nagel Women’s football looks set to continue its staggering growth pattern of the last few years with the impending birth of the South Eastern Women’s Football League (SEWFL) in 2017.

A total of 25 clubs will field 32 teams across three divisions, setting the foundation for future success stories in the elite VFL and AFL Women’s competitions.

Established clubs in the South East such as Beaconsfield, Cranbourne, Endeavour Hills and Seaford will match motors in the top two divisions, while the real excitement will come at the base level of SEWFL where new clubs will bring a fresh look to the football landscape.

Division three - the South East Development League - will see clubs from as far and wide as the Bass Coast,

Morwell East, Crib Point and Bunyip dip their toes into the competitive ranks for the very first time.

Officer SFC is also one such club and president Barry O’Loughlin said after a long build up the club was now looking forward to the start of the season on Saturday 6 May. “It’s been a long process, but the numbers have stayed strong and the girls have really maintained their enthusiasm,” O’Loughlin said.

“It will be great to finally get it going, a great starting point for a concept that is going to get bigger and bigger as the years go by. It’s phenomenal what’s happening really, women’s football is already massive and you’d love to have a crystal ball to see where it will all end up.”

O’Loughlin said the growth of the senior competition would hopefully attract stronger numbers to the junior

ranks.

“I know there have been some difficulties in attracting numbers in the juniors at some clubs, but this will filter down and clubs are going to get stronger and stronger,” he said.

“Some clubs like Cranbourne and Seaford are already fielding three senior sides and I can see the day - in two to three years’ time - where we’re doing the same.”

O’Loughlin said the implementation of women’s football had created a great atmosphere at the club.

“It’s always been about a one-club mentality for us, I’ve said that from the start, and that’s the way we’re approaching it,” he said.

“The girls get treated no differently to the boys. We share the duties around the club evenly and that’s the way it should be.”

Dee’s passion for coaching sets the scene

By Nick Creely Women’s football was once the great unknown - it’s now the great success story of 2017.

With all the hype that came with the AFLW and its inaugural season, there was also the birth of an elite pathway for talented young girls to develop their game - the TAC Cup Girls competition.

And the coach of the Dandenong Stingrays Girls’ team, Dee Longwill, said that the introduction of the pathway is another major stepping stone in Women’s Football in Victoria.

“It’s very important (the competition) - these girls are the benchmark to where the young talent will come from, it is our job to get the younger generation up to the standard of our elite programs,” she said.

“There needs to be a succession plan or the competition won’t last.

It is about educating and increasing the awareness, the well-being of this young talent.

“It is good to see what level they need to be at - how hard they need to

work to get to the elite level.

“Definitely the standard will improve and it will become the benchmark for the younger generation but it will also provide the education and multiple pathways for women’s footy.”

It was a steady season for the Rays, who finished in a respectable sixth position with a 3-2 record, and impressed on numerous occasions against some of the stronger sides.

They enjoyed a strong win in their inaugural game over the Oakleigh Chargers by 24-points, before tasting victory twice more against Gippsland Power (72-points) and Greater Western Victoria (37-points).

“I am more determined to gain as much experience in the off-season to provide the next generation with the growth and knowledge that is required.

“Working with the assistant coaches, trainers and support staff was also a great experience, learning and bouncing ideas off each other.

“Currently I would like to continue gaining exposure and experience to my coaching and see where it takes me.”

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH-EAST Berwick City continued their positive start to the season with a solid 5-1 away win against Old Scotch on Saturday.

Both teams started positively with both goalkeepers on top early denying the opposition forwards good chances at both ends of the ground.

It was Berwick who opened the scoring in the 30th minute through skipper Orlando Mejias who blasted home from close range.

Berwick’s lead didn’t last long as Old Scotch pounced on a midfield error to score on the break.

Just before half time, Berwick restored their lead after great lead up play from Bryce Ziada found Mejias in space who clinically hit the ball first time leaving the Old Scotch keeper no chance.

The second half was a dominant display from Berwick who controlled the game and snuffed out any opposition resistance when Mejias bagged his

hat-trick in the 59th minute.

Further goals to Ruben Ichim and Steve Vernon rounded off a solid performance to keep City undefeated in 2017.

The Reserves lost their first game of the year going down 2-0.

Berwick face a tough month of football ahead as they take on some of the key teams fighting for league honours.

One of those teams is Beaumaris who Berwick will meet this Saturday night at home.

Doveton also tasted victory, with a 1-0 victory over Peninsula Strikers FC at Centenary Park.

STATE-LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Bunyip has finally won their first ever state-league match, crushing local rivals Drouin 5-0 in a comprehensive display.

The win lifts the Strikers off the bottom-of-the-ladder, as they look to keep building into the next season.
