City seeking ‘fair way’ to pay rising pool gas costs

By Luke Voogt Geelong pool-users face fee hikes as City Hall tries to find “the fairest way” of covering higher gas prices.

Interstate experiences suggested that operating costs could rise as much as 200 per cent, a state sport body warned.

City Hall strategy and finance director Joanne Moloney foreshadowed increased costs for Geelong facilities.

“We have been forced to realistically consider the fairest way to cover these rising costs in the framing of our 2017/2018 draft budget,” she said.

“Like many other councils across Australia, the City is not immune to rising energy costs.

“Our biggest exposure is the significant amount of gas we use to heat the swimming pools

and other indoor recreation facilities at our four swim, sport and leisure centres.”

Visport said the cost of running pools in New South Wales had in some cased tripled.

The price hikes would soon spread to Victoria, warned Vicsport chair Margot Foster.

“Swimming pools and major sporting complexes in Victoria, many run by local councils, will be significantly and adversely affected by excessive energy price hikes.”

Increases in running costs of up to $500,000 had forced New South Wales councils to reduce pool temperatures or increase fees, she said.

“It is important for government to develop an energy policy with an adequate and ongoing budget provision for sport at both a federal and state level to cope with increased energy costs.”

Water heating costs would present a signifi-

cant challenge to Geelong’s 21 soccer clubs, said Geelong Regional Football chair Jo Plummer.

“I think any rise in the utilities is going to be difficult to manage, particularly in light of the fact that most of (the clubs) are volunteer-run,” she said.

“Football in the region has not been traditionally well-supported outside of the fundraisers.”

Ms Plummer said local clubs could use renewable energy to become more “self-reliant” with support from City Hall and State Government.

“It makes good business sense and good environmental sense to source energy needs from natural resources. The return on investment now is very good.”

The region’s 20-plus “increasingly multipurpose” soccer grounds could utilise solar power for lighting, Ms Plummer said.

‘Take away cash’

In Brief City scare Police cordoned off part of central Geelong yesterday afternoon (Thursday) as a man threatened to jump off a shopping complex roof.

The man eventually left Market Square Shopping Centre with police, who allowed shoppers to resume free movement in the area around mid-afternoon.

Drug tests Geelong motorists face increased drug testing as part of a new road safety campaign targeting regional Victoria, according to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).

Police would increase testing in regional areas and back streets as part of the new effort to reduce drug-related road deaths, the TAC said.

Soldiers honoured A new war memorial is set to open at Leopold today (Friday) ahead of Anzac Day. The memorial would acknowledge the sacrifices of past and present soldiers from “the greater Leopold district”, City Hall said.

Brewery winner A Geelong brewery has won two titles at a national industry awards.

Little Creatures won the Vintage Cellars Best of Awards’ Brewery of the Year category and Best Australian Craft Beer for Dog Days Summer Ale.

Eggs role Geelong’s council has distanced itself from an Easter egg hunt at Geelong Showgrounds that made national headlines this week.

City Hall said it “played no part in the organisation of the privately-run event” where some patrons expressed anger after children had to return eggs for exceeding a limit rule of one bag per child.

“Every retail burglary I’ve been to, I’ve recommended they don’t keep money on the premises.

Sen Const King’s “no-cash-on-premises” initiative would involve Geelong West stores displaying empty till inserts in streetfront windows.

Shop owners could also display signs stating that no cash was held on the property.

“That indicates to anyone with illegal intentions that they’re wasting their time but if you don’t actually (remove the cash) the sign means nothing.”

The initiative would be a first for Geelong, Sen Const King said.

“Over time I’ll bring it in all over Geelong.”

Bellarine Police introduced the initiative after a burglary crimewave at Ocean Grove.

“It was clearly seen as a soft target and we had to bring in something that would restrict easy access to cash,” Sen Const King said.

“It was quite successful.”

Bellarine Sergeant Mick Knight confirmed a “dramatic reduction” in shop burglaries at Ocean Grove.

Claims to ‘firsts’ have traditionally denoted unique achievements of certain esteem.

Think ‘first man on the moon’ or ‘first nation to reach the South Pole’. Praiseworthy events, for sure.

City Hall tested the scale last week with a “first of its kind” pedestrian bridge, proudly installed over railway tracks at the western end of Lt Malop St. The bridge was made with “structural fibre reinforced polymer”, the City explained.

Interesting material, maybe, but surely there must have been greater grounds to claim a “first”.

And surely there was.

“Engineers believe it is the first bridge made with this material to be installed over a rail corridor in the Southern Hemisphere,” the City confirmed.

Deakin University showed how this week with confirmation of its involvement in the second Treatment 2017 Flightlines, a temporary art exhibition at Werribee’s sewage farm.

Curator and Deakin art lecturer Cameron Bishop (pictured) said

the 10 featured artists had “immersed themselves” at the plant to find inspiration for their works.

“Just like sewage has been transformed into liquid gold (water), ideas have taken form through material processes to become artworks,” Dr Bishop explained.

Exhibition patrons take a 2.5-hour bus tour of the artworks that, Dr Bishop said, were unencumbered by the “sterile” environment of a gallery.

He can say that again!

Anyway, to enjoy a feast for the eyes, and possibly the nose, Treatment 2017 Flightlines runs from Saturday until 29 April.

Also raising a stink is beleaguered TV sports presenter Craig Hutchinson, Geelong’s scapegoat in the demise of Channel 9’s The Footy Show.

In recent years certain circles attributed the show’s success to Geelong, given its links with on-air talent Billy Brownless, Sam Newman and Rebecca Maddern.

Then Hutchy - another Cats supporter - took over as host at the start of this season.

How could the show’s future be anything but assured with yet another Geelong name involved.

Maddern, for one, was convinced, predicting he would bring “bring something pretty powerful” to the long-running program.

Well, powerful might not have been the right word. Since then the ratings have tanked, Geelong’s influence has been forgotten and the knives have come out for the host alone.

Business awards nominations triple Nominations for Geelong’s premier business awards have tripled on last year, according to organisers.

Geelong Business Excellence Awards received more than 330 nominations by last week’s cut-off, said the city’s chamber of commerce chief.

The chamber was “thrilled by the unprecedented interest”, Bernadette Uzelac said.

“To receive more than 330 nominations of a range of businesses from micro-enterprises through to large companies speaks volumes about their services and how their customers want to see them recognised as award winners,” she said.

“The amount of nominations are triple to what was received in 2016 and highlights why the Geelong Business Excellence Awards, the longest continuously running business awards in Australia, remains the best way to showcase local businesses that epitomise excellence.”

The Geelong Indy came on board as a Geelong Business Excellence Awards sponsor for the first

time this year.

Iconic veteran’s salute to mateship

By Luke Voogt World War II veteran Tom Randall has attended Anglesea’s Anzac Day ceremony longer than most Australians have lived.

“I’ve done it ever since I’ve been in Anglesea,” the 102-year-old told The Indy Wednesday. “I moved there in 1972.”

Kenneth Thomas Randall served as a mechanic in 65th Anti-Aircraft Searchlight Company (Royal Australian Engineers) in Darwin from 1942 to 1945.

He remembered arriving in Darwin six months after 242 Japanese planes attacked ships in the city’s harbour on 19 February, 1942.

“One of the first things I remember was all the sunken ships in Darwin Harbour. They (had been) sitting ducks.”

The Japanese would bomb the city almost 100 more times, but Mr Randall avoided any near misses.

“Although they bombed Darwin all the time, you weren’t always in the place they bombed,”

he said. “It’s a very big place.”

He would ride his motorbike around the city and its outskirts maintaining searchlight generators.

Goannas would give him a scare more often than bombs, he said.

“You’d ride your motorbike around and that would frighten the hell out of them. They were pretty big - they’d give you a fright alright when they’d jump out of the trenches.”

Mr Randall is one of five members of his unit still alive, he said.

“We don’t have a reunion anymore because there’s not enough of us left.”

The great-grandfather of five has given the salute for the ceremony for years, but this year handed it over to Moss Darby a 94-year-old RAAF Veteran from World War II. “He’s OK,” Mr Randall said. “We don’t talk about the war very much, we just like to catch up socially.”

War’s old wounds still cause pain

By Luke Voogt For David Wilson Anzac Day is a time to quietly remember those who didn’t come back - like mate and fellow infantryman Nick Cassano.

“He got shot in the head on his first operation,” the Highton Vietnam veteran said.

While the two were never “close”, their shared infantry and recruit training created a special bond.

“You never forget,” Mr Wilson said.

Mr Wilson spent his 21st birthday in Vietnam, lugging a back-bending 60kg - including 2000 rounds - as a machine gunner for 5RAR (infantry) during 1969 and 1970.

With resupplies every three days, the “water you had to drink was the water you had to carry”.

“During wet season it wasn’t too bad,” Mr Wilson said.

“You would drain the water off your hoochie at night or a banana leaf if you were lucky. We had chlorine tablets but they were terrible.”

He remembers stalking North Vietnamese Army soldiers hidden in dense jungle.

“If you were standing at the window there,” he said pointing three metres away, “you’d hardly be seen”.

After months patrolling the soldiers became attuned to the nature around them.

“The worst part was when you were walking through and it just went dead silent,” Mr Wilson said, “you knew something was going to happen.”

Sometimes the enemy shot at his platoon four or five times a day. The fights could be as short as 15 minutes while others could last for hours.

“You knew when they had just missed you because you could hear the (supersonic) crack but by the time you heard it the bullet was well gone,” he said.

He respected North Vietnamese Army soldiers as a deadly adversary.

“You had to,” he said. “They had the same loyalty to their soldiers as we did.

“We would never leave anybody (who died) behind. They did but they would try not to.”

Vietnam left Mr Wilson with a bad back and he still goes to the gym through Veteran Affair’s rehab program. The emotional scars are less noticeable.

“Even now I hate to sit in a restaurant or anywhere with my back to the door,” he said.

“A lack of planning” has left Geelong passengers without seats on increasingly overcrowded trains, according to opposition politicians.

The state and federal MPs launched an online petition on Wednesday calling for increased investment in passenger rail from the Victorian Government and the Commonwealth.

But Victorian Transport Minister Jacinta Allen slammed the petition as hypocrisy, saying the previous coalition State Government was to blame.

“This petition isn’t worth the paper it’s written on,” she said.

“The former Liberal Government were an unmitigated disaster for Geelong commuters - slashing funding for V/Line and leaving passengers stranded on crowded trains.”

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said she would join five state Liberal MPs collecting signatures on local trains in coming weeks.

Ms Henderson called for more funding to fix the Geelong-Warrnambool line, more daily services and more express, peak-hour trains between Geelong and Melbourne.

“The $3.65m Regional Rail Link has proved to be a short-term fix only and is almost at capacity with services becoming increasingly slow and over-crowded,” she said.

Ms Henderson said the State Government had yet to deliver a business plan for a rail duplication between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, despite $1m from the Turnbull government.

But the Transport Minister said her government was yet to receive any of that money.

“The Turnbull government hasn’t yet provided a cent to build better public transport for Geelong or anywhere else in Victoria.”

Ms Allan said that her government was “getting on” with the business plan for the duplication with $3 million in last year’s State Budget.

PETITIONING: Liberal MPs Andrew Katos and Sarah Henderson have called for increased funding for Geelong trains.

She said she would not take “lectures” from the former Liberal government “failures” which “slashed $120 million out of V/Line”.

“We’ve restored and increased that funding, with $198 million for the regional operator in last year’s State Budget.”

“The former Liberal government didn’t order a single regional carriage for two years - we ordered 48 in our first two years.”

Ms Allan said the previous government added 10 new services for Geelong in four years.

“We’ve already added well over 200. We’re adding more services, new carriages and delivering the improvements Geelong passengers need and deserve,” she said.

P-platers caught driving at speeds reaching more than twice local limits have infuriated Geelong police.

Highway Patrol officers caught two of them travelling around the region at dangerous speeds over Easter, with both facing court appearances.

The arrests follow the launch of a road safety operation to crack down on dangerous driving between Easter and Anzac Day. Geelong Highway Patrol officers detected the first offender driving a Ford utility at 139km/h in a 60km/h zone on Geelong Rd near Inverlochy Dve, Bannockburn, about 6pm Sunday.

Police said the officers intercepted the eastbound vehicle immediately before pulling over the 18-year-old driver.

Police expected to charge the teenager on summons with driving at a dangerous speed and other traffic-related offences.

They also expected to impound his car at a later date, police said.

Other officers caught a 25-year-old P-plater driving at 156km/h while “on his way to court”, police said.

State Highway Patrol police detected his black Holden Cruze sedan speeding on the Princes Highway before pulling him over.

Police said the officers impounded his car for 30 days, which would cost the owner $1038.

Police expected to charge the man with driving at a dangerous speed, exceeding the speed limit and failing to display P-plates.

“When they questioned the man about his excessive speed he replied that he was on his way to court,“ police said.

The impoundments were part of Operation Nexus, a state-wide road-safety operation running until Anzac Day. Police said the operation would target speed, fatigue, distraction, seatbelt non-compliance and impaired driving in an effort to reduce road trauma and improve road-user behaviour.

The operation began late last week before concluding at midnight on 25 April.

Mould outbreak closes historic home An outbreak of potentially dangerous mould has forced Geelong authorities to close another public building.

City Hall said it “reluctantly” closed North Geelong’s historic Osborne House, which had been scheduled to host a 200-head Anzac Day event next week.

The closure follows similar mould outbreaks that forced City Hall to temporarily close halls at Ceres and Barwon Heads earlier this year.

Council representatives met Osborne House tenants “to fully explain the situation”, said City Hall’s Joanne Moloney.

The mould levels were up to three times higher than the acceptable, she said The mould spores could be harmful if inhaled, causing symptoms “similar to asthma, or cold and flu like conditions”.

Ms Moloney said veterans who had planned a the Anzac Day event were “very happy” with the City’s offer of an alternative venue.

“We’re also working closely with the other Osborne House tenants to help them find alternative venues to meet, until we know the full extent of the mould problem, and how long it will take to clean-up,” Ms Moloney said.

Games bid was kept under wraps

By Luke Voogt Geelong’s council administrators were left in the dark on plans to host Commonwealth Games events in the city as part of a regional Victorian bid.

City Hall confirmed the three administrators heard about the plans only hours before they became public last week.

The City had no involvement in discussions about the statewide proposal to co-host the games in 2030, according to administrators’ chair Kathy Alexander.

Pedestrian in a miracle escape An Ocean Grove woman narrowly avoided death after a car struck her on the Bellarine Highway on Monday afternoon.

The 45-year-old woman had parked on the left shoulder of the eastbound lane of the highway, between Bawtree and Curlewis roads, at about 3.20pm.

The woman stepped out of her vehicle and stood on the road when an eastbound car hit her, breaking her leg.

Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Jamie Kahle said the woman was lucky not to have been more seriously injured, or dead.

“If that was a frontal impact it could have been different. That’s a 100km/h zone.”

The driver of the car, a 44-year-old Ocean Grove man, stopped and assisted until emergency services arrived.

An air ambulance airlifted the woman to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

Geelong Highway Patrol officers examined the scene and will continue their investigation.

Witnesses should call 1800 333 000.

“But (we’re) happy to be involved,“ she said.

“The City supports any initiative to highlight the many benefits of regional Victoria - including our support for sport and our range of first-class sporting facilities.”

Dr Alexander said Geelong would be ideal for hosting world-class competitions with the city’s excellent variety of venues.

“We also have excellent facilities and attractions for the thousands of competitors, visitors and world media who would attend such an event.”

Shepparton City Council’s plans to bid for the

games hit the metro papers last Thursday. But a Shepparton City spokesperson said the council only mailed the plans to its counterpart municipalities a few days earlier.

The bid, spearheaded by Shepparton mayor Dinny Adem, would see 11 regional cities and towns in Victoria hosting events if it won.

Geelong would host rugby 7s, hockey and gymnastics.

Former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons ridiculed the games as a “waste of time and money”.

“I wouldn’t like to see my rates go towards it,” he said.

“It’s the Olympics or nothing, as far as I am concerned.”

Mr Lyons predicted Queensland would “lose a fortune” on the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games coming up in 2018.

He added City Hall would be better off spending money on Geelong’s cricket and football facilities.

A female Geelong MP has condemned a video of Muslim women describing how male Muslims can hit their wives.

Federal Liberal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said she was “extremely concerned” about the video featuring a Women of Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia panel.

In the Facebook video, a panellist says men should hit wives in a “managed way” with a short stick, a twisted scarf or a scrap of fabric.

Another panellist says it “should be done in such a way as not to cause harm or pain. It’s a symbolic act”.

“As chair of a federal parliamentary inquiry into family violence law reform I wish to make it clear that any form of assault of a spouse by a husband or wife is strictly against the law in Australia,” Ms Henderson said.

“I know that many people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds suffer family violence at their hands of a spouse.

“These sorts of practices, as described in the video, are not only repugnant but criminal.”

Extra pay fair penalty for employers

Charity begins at home

The desire to get rid of penalty rates angers me.

Stop making out it’s no big deal for people to work public holidays or nights or overtime.

People working those hours give up precious time with their families, often to work when it’s much busier than normal. If we want people to be happy in their workplaces, they deserve penalty rates.

I am married to someone who gets extra work on public holidays, along with an allowance for regular nightshifts. The money is helpful, but I am unable to keep track of the amount of Christmases, Easters and other public holidays I have spent alone.

Many families don’t get the chance for everyone to be together often. Even double-time doesn’t really cover what they miss out on.

And think how much child care costs on public holidays like Christmas!

I paid $150 to be shown for 20 minutes how to use contact lenses, which was huge money for nearly nothing, yet we want to cut penalty rates for people on hourly rates a small percentage of that amount.

Treat people fairly and pay them what they deserve. Compensate them - they aren’t cogs in a machine.

People do not necessarily have a choice about working special days. It’s their boss’ choice.

Would anyone else be prepared to work Christmas Day for no extra?

Everyone should be concerned about penalty rates because we must all have family who would be impacted.

We work to live, not live to work.

I am incensed at the vast number of charities panhandling on the streets of Geelong, especially United Nations-related ones.

I tell them I do not give to charity but help people I know, instead.

In the case of UN-related charities, I tell them my country pays $500 million a year to be a UN member although taxpayers have never consented to such a donation.

I also ask them where was the UN when the Rwandan genocide was about to happen? They were leaving town, that’s where!

The UN also has an inordinate amount of influence in Australian politics, thus an inordinate amount of influence in our lives.

How? Via bogus climate change programs and in dictating all sorts of government policy, that’s how.

Many Third World countries allegedly needing UN charity had or still have dictators, despots and tyrants who stole aid money, murdered thousands and ruined their economies without a murmur by those fostering the global-responsibility agenda.

I tell the collectors: “Go ask the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds and the mangy Banks for a quid. They’re part of the one per cent that owns 99 per cent of the world’s wealth and they’re the ones who should pay the charity bills”.

George Negus was right when he said charity should not need to exist.

Charity should and does begin at home, especially with me.

Unhealthy fund for members In 1923 Geelong Cement Works staff formed a mutual society, Cement Workers Hospital Benefits Insurance, to support each other for a better quality of life.

In 1934 Geelong’s mayor held a meeting that made the scheme available to non-industrial workers, combined with another society, ASN. In August that year it became known as Geelong Hospital Benefits Association, a not-forprofit 100-per-cent-member-based organisation.

In 1958 it became GMHBA. In 2000 it became GMBA Pty Ltd. From 2008 to 2009, contribution income was $191.3 million, with $168.2 paid out in claims and profit of $23.1 million.

In 2010, NIB offered a $140 million takeover, with members offered $1500 to $6500 each depending on length of membership. The board and chairman Ken Jarvis canvassed members to reject the bid, which we did.

Another offer of $161 million was made and refused. The bid failed.

In 2016, CEO Mark Valena announced a donation of $5 million to Geelong Football Club, which I consider a misuse of the mutual society’s funds without consent of the members, and which cannot come under the heading of advertising.

In 2017, membership contributions go up. My fees are now over $3500 per annum, even with an increase in the government rebate.

I’m curious to know the board members’ remuneration and the CEO’s salary with performance bonuses.

As an age pensioner with 40 years’ membership, I have decided to notify GMHBA I will terminate my membership.

I encourage other members to do the same in protest.

Andrews threatens our heritage Geelong and surrounds played an important part in Victoria’s development many decades ago.

Many historical properties from then still exist, but seem to be under threat from Andrews Government decisions.

A case in point is Newtown’s The Heights Heritage House and Gardner, a National Trust property.

Some time ago, public donations were received for restoration of the property’s iconic water tower.

Due to the skill and many hours of hard work of volunteer craftsmen, the tower has been restored. It now needs to be reinstalled and completed so it can be seen and enjoyed for years to come.

Perhaps, Heritage Victoria could help bring this to fruition.

Flu shot to fight the virus A quick trip to the chemist is all it takes to avoid being bed-ridden and miserable with the flu, says Community Care Chemist’s David Pyne.

Locals can avoid the debilitating sickness for $20.80, or $10 if they are eligible for the Federal Government’s Immunize Australia Program.

“It’s really nothing,“ David says. “You can lose several days’ work or contact with your family, and I don’t think anybody could put a dollar value on that.“ “Anyone over the age of 18 can come in and get a flu vaccination. You don’t have to go the doctors and wait and pay for the consultation.”

In Australia, influenza on average causes 3500 deaths,18,000 hospitalisations and 300,000 GP consultations each year.

A lot of people mistake influenza for a common cold, but the flu is much worse, David says.

“When you get the flu, you’ll know it. It’s absolutely debilitating - your whole body aches and generally you really can’t do anything.”

The chemist offers the quadrivalent vaccine which immunises clients against four strains, including the most dangerous and most prevalent.

“It’s definitely not 100 per cent effective but it’s close,” David says.

“And it gives you a better chance of fighting other strains because your body has to do less work to produce the antibodies to fight a new strain.

“But even then it’s not very likely for you to get another strain.”

Scores of double-blind experiments worldwide have confirmed it is impossible to get the flu from the vaccination.

The vaccine works by exposing the immune system to the inactive “shell” of the virus, and the body responds by producing antibodies, David says.

“When your body comes into contact with actual virus those antibodies are there and ready to kill it.”

David hears anecdotes about people getting sick after the flu shot.

He says it is possible to get mild symptoms a couple of days after the shot but “that’s due to your immune system in action.”

He adds the body can raise its temperature to kill what it thinks is a virus. It is also possible to get the flu just before the shot or to get a rhinovirus (common cold) after it.

The Community Care Warehouse had performed 195 vaccinations Wednesday morning.

“But we’ll be over 200 by lunchtime because

we’ve got a full day,” David says.

“We would like to do a lot more.”

“We get a lot of people from local businesses walking in,” he says.

“We’re giving vaccinations all day, every day.”

Comedy drew him off ‘wrong’ path

By Luke Voogt Doug Chappel has said that comedy transformed him from being homeless and “hanging out with the wrong crowd” to working as a counsellor for disadvantaged youth.

The “classic western suburbs guy”, according to friend and fellow comic Dave O’Neil, now has five degrees and is applying for a PhD. “I just love performing,” he told the Indy recently.

“Comedy changed my life.

“I’ve hung around with some shady characters - (comedy) took me away from that negative lifestyle.”

But, more importantly, comedy introduced him to “people who believed” in him and encouraged him to go to university.

He recalled being an unemployed youth when his friends urged him to get up on stage for first time at a St Kilda comedy gig.

“I thought ‘I’ve got nothing else going on’ so I thought I might as well do comedy,” he said.

“I jumped up and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Finding out that comedians got free drinks at gigs was extra motivation, he added.

He went on to perform for troops in Timor Leste, the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan, which he described as “rewarding” gigs.

“Anyone that dedicates their life to defending others - that is a noble thing to do.”

He was at a base in Afghanistan on 11 September 2014 when soldiers were expecting a rocket attack.

But one of them told him not to worry as the insurgents were “terrible shots”.

“I look at this building and it’s got these holes in it,” Chappel said.

“I said ‘isn’t that where we’re sleeping?’ He said ‘yeah but what’s the chance they’re going to hit it twice’.”

For years he has helped out homeless youths

Chappel will perform at Geelong RSL on Saturday 29 April alongside fellow comedians Dave O’Neil and Brad Oakes.

He was down in Geelong over Easter visiting his wife’s family and reckoned he had a done

more than 100 shows in the city.

“I’ve got half my family up in Geelong.”

Dave O’Neil’s in-laws also live in Geelong.

“I’ve certainly been down to G-town a lot because of my wife’s connections,” O’Neil said.

“My mother-in-law is a massive Cats fan.”

He looked forward to poking fun at the former pier restaurant Smorgies, the waterfront Bollards

and Geelong Grammar School.

“They asked me to come to gig once to raise money for their rowing shed,” the former public school student said.

O’Neil will perform at the RSL fresh from his sell-out show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

“Sure, I’m in a small room but that doesn’t matter,” he said.

Tip of My Tongue Mark Denis Lizotte, better known as Diesel, said people still walked into his shows not realising “I wrote those songs”.

Nearly every Australian would know Diesel’s iconic 1992 hit, Tip of My Tongue.

“It’s definitely the one people connect, but I can’t explain why,” he told the Indy ahead of his upcoming Geelong show.

“I guess it’s got this really contagious groove thing.”

But many in the audience forget he penned pub classics like Man Alive, Cry in Shame, Never Miss Your Water and Come to Me. “I’ve had songs that have technically had more air time,” he said.

“Woolies, Bunnings and Dan Murphy’s - it doesn’t matter where you would go you would hear them - and you still do.

Diesel has toured Australia solo since the winter of 2016 with his latest album, Americana.

“If I’m not in the studio, there’s a good chance I’m out touring,” he said. “(After three decades) I don’t know any different, really. My office just moves around, I guess.”

Diesel said he was looking forward to returning to the Gateway Hotel for the second time on 5 May. “It’s intimate,” he said, “especially for the solo show I’m doing.

“The whole Melbourne music culture really extends into regional areas well past Geelong.”

Diesel tours with his “colourful palette” of six or seven different guitars - including some electric. “(Crowds) are not used to seeing someone go full-throttle on an electric guitar without a band around them,” he said.

“Years ago, it just seemed absurd. But who said

just because you’re playing a solo show, you have to do an acoustic guitar?”

He has even played a banjo or mandolin on occasion.

“I have a go at anything that has string on them,” he said.

It’s fitting because he learnt to play music on a cello through the school system at his childhood home in Arizona.

“I did it originally to please Mum, Dad and my sister,” he said.

“But I feel in love with it - as soon as you hear the sound, it makes you become addicted.”

When his sister gave him his first electric guitar at age 14, it was like a “toy”.

“It was like (my hands) had been to the gym,” he said, He described his latest album as the “family scrapbook of (his) musical heritage”.

The album includes songs like Joni Mitchell’s Circle Game, which Diesel remembered singing in the tub at two years old.

“I was already learning to rip things off, even at that age,” he said.

Part of his upbringing included touring the country with his brother-in-law, rock legend Jimmy Barnes, whose voice was “inhuman“.

“Jimmy’s such a passionate and forceful singer - that was kind of like boot camp for me, and it really forged me,” he said.

“But I still feel like the shoe-gazing guitar player that started singing sometimes.”

Diesel promised his next Geelong show would include his greatest hits.

“I’ve had such a blessed career, and I will be forever scratching my head trying to figure out how I’ve made a career of this,” he said.

Anglesea’s Iris Walshe-Howling was “thrilled” when she received the script for playwright Sandy Fairthorn’s most successful play, The Savages of Wirramai.

“Sandy wanted it performed in this area because she lives on the Surf Coast,” she said.

Walshe-Howling will direct the play when it comes to Geelong West for the first time in a three-week run starting on Friday 28 April.

“This is my first foray into the Woodbin Theatre Company,” the Anglesea Performing Arts director said.

“We submitted the script earlier this year and it was one of the plays they’ve chosen to perform.”

Walshe-Howling saw the play when it debuted at iconic independent Carlton theatre La Mama in 2015.

“I fell in love with the text,” she said.

“I’ve seen Sandy’s work before and I thought this piece was just so beautifully put together. It’s

a very deeply emotional piece looking at family dynamics.”

The play begins when members of the Savage family meet at their Wirramai farm for their parents’ anniversary on a sweltering Anzac Day eve.

“The father is a Vietnam veteran with all the baggage that that involves,” Walshe-Howling said.

“He is obviously struggling with PTSD as a lot of Vietnam veterans have.”

Fraught with undisclosed truths, the family dynamics are played out under the blades of recently installed wind turbines as a violent storm brews overhead.

Walshe-Howling described the play as challenging as a director and for its all-Geelong cast.

“But (it’s) a wonderful challenge because it gives you such a wonderful scope of emotions to explore.”

The play features the acting talents of Philip Besancon, Lisa Berry, Amber Connor, Kethly Hemsworth, Stacy Carmichael and Tom Bartle.

Cats great at late rallies The Cats goal accuracy and late-game brilliance could be the key in this Sunday’s match against the Saints.

Geelong have outscored their opponents dramatically in the last quarter of their first four games, including an 11-to-2 goal final term against Hawthorn.

“We have great confidence that we finish games well,” said Geelong coach Chris Scott.

The Cats continue to lead the AFL in goal accuracy at 62 per cent, despite a very inaccurate first half against the Hawks.

“We were good around the ball, and we did give ourselves some chances,” Scott said.

“We worked to generate the shots but missed a couple of easy ones.”

Post-match talented young Cat Nakia Cockatoo said the club’s kicking gave the players “enormous belief ”.

Cockatoo was impressed with his Cats perseverance to “keep making sure we execute” which allowed them to straighten up dramatically in the second half.

“Every now and again you’ve got to stuff

up a kick.”

Accuracy will likely be factor Sunday with powerful Cats half-forward Tom Hawkins leading the AFL in goal kicking with 16.5, alongside Adelaide’s Eddie Betts. Fellow forward Daniel Menzel trails him by a few goals on 13.

But St Kilda has a good chance to stop Hawkins with key defender Nathan Brown in good form and the Saints leading the AFL in contested marks.

The speedy Saints play well at Etihad Stadium, but will have to be cleaner to beat Geelong after scrappy wins against the Brisbane and Collingwood.

Scott acknowledged the Cats were still “a work in progress” despite their accuracy and finishing.

“As a coaching group, we’re struggling to work out where exactly we sit in the competition - so we’ve stopped trying,” he said.

“I’m pretty sure we’re not the best team. We won (against Hawthorn) when we weren’t playing great footy, particularly early.”

Scott said the “flexible” Duncan was “flourishing” as an inside midfielder.

Young guns Cockatoo, Brandan Parfitt and Tom Stewart have stood out in the first four games, with Stewart kicking his first AFL goal against the Hawks.

“I was just talking to my sister before and apparently it took less than a second to get on the boot,” Stewart said post-match.

“I just kicked it as far and straight as I could and it went through, so I couldn’t be happier.”

But two other young standouts, James Parsons and Sam Menegola, will miss the game after copping suspensions.

Parsons will likely miss two weeks for a stray elbow to Luke Hodge while Menegola will miss one for a dangerous tackle, also on Hodge.

South African goes one better for first Rip Curl win Jordy Smith became the first South African to win the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach when he overpowered Brazlian Caio Ibelli in clean 2.5-metre surf.

Smith’s sixth championship tour win elevated him to second in the world-title race behind reigning champion John John Florence.

Smith was rapt to win the world’s longestrunning professional surfing competition after finishing second at Bells last year.

“I can’t even believe it - second last year and now this - it’s amazing,” he said.

“I was stoked to have made it into round four and then every heat after that was a bonus.”

Smith amused the crowd when he pretended to ring the trophy bell after cementing his lead in the final with a high-scoring ride.

“I tried to take it easy and not take things too seriously, as you may have been able to tell from

“Once I got the nine a bit of the pressure dropped and then, sure enough, Caio kept coming. He is an amazing surfer and has been so on point this event.”

Smith said the “pieces of the puzzle” were coming together for him after injury and rebuilding phases in recent years.

“My family and wife are right behind me and I couldn’t do it without their support.”

Perfect conditions over Easter sent anglers out far and wide.

St Leonards was popular, with a mixed bag of fish keeping anglers busy.

Whiting were the main target at St Leonards, as they were spread from the section of water known as Bourke Street and down toward the entrance to Swan Bay. Fish to over 40cm were taken, with a bit of tidal flow increasing catch rates.

Squid also featured in anglers, but at times were hard to tempt. Meanwhile, drifting the deeper nearby water of 10m or more was the way to go for a nice catch of flathead.

Queenscliff also had squid on the chew for anglers drifting with size-3.5 artificial jigs. Whiting were taken over the grass beds to the east of the harbour, while anglers fishing The Rip boated the odd kingfish with a variety of tactics.

Soft-plastics accounted for pinkie snapper around Geelong’s waterfront.

The Barwon River estuary fished well over the Easter break for whiting, mullet, Australian salmon and silver trevally. Pippies on light running-sinker rigs worked well anywhere along Sheepwash Road, although strong tides made conditions challenging.

Trelly’s Fishing World Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt ventured up to the Goulburn River near Eildon where he landed brown and rainbow to 40cm while casting hardbody lures from the bank. Adam noted that the river was high and slightly discoloured, which seemed to make the fish bite more aggressively on lures up 95mm.

Next week should be worth fishing at Leonards for white, while Geelong’s waterfront Bay could produce some pinkies on soft plastics for pinkie snapper. Freshwater fishos should try Lake Bullen Merri for rainbow trout and Chinook salmon.
