Hopping on the festival ride By Rebecca Skilton Pakenham’s Hippity Hop Childcare and Kindergarten is striving to capture the spirit of fairy tales at this year’s Yakkerboo festival. Incorporating two of Walt Disney’s most recognizable icons, Mickey Mouse and the Disney castle, into its float design, the childcare centre’s presence is an exciting addition to this year’s Disney themed parade. With past parades seeing 5000 to 6000 spectators flock to Pakenham to celebrate the annual Yakkerboo festival, Hippity Hop Childcare and Kindergarten centre director Jessica Quirk and her team of staff are in full Yakkerboo preparation mode. Yet while it’s no easy feat to design and construct a float for the famous parade, it was a task that Jessica said was initiated by the children at the childcare. “All the children have been participating and making the float,” Jessica said. “The idea came when we asked them what they remember about Disney. “We had a few ideas that came out of that like who was their favourite character and what they liked most. “One of the children mentioned that they loved that there were different coloured castles and that’s where the idea came from.” Since its conception, Yakkerboo has continually invited district children to become involved with the festival. While the original Mr Yakkerboo was created with the aid of Pakenham
Flynn and Harrison of the Hippity Hop Child Care and Kindergarten helping to prepare their Yakkerboo float. school children, Hippity Hop Childcare has continued to uphold youth involvement, with students able to have a helping hand in the construction of the childcare centre’s float. “We’ve had to do things like measure the length of the cardboards to match the truck,” Jessica said. “The children also got to paint the top of the castle and one of the kids even suggested that if we used sticky
tape we could make the castle look like it’s made of bricks. “The kids are really excited,” she said. While the children of Hippity Hop will be dressing up as their favourite Disney characters, the childcare centre is also inviting children’s families to be involved, mirroring the successful family participation from past years. “We will be asking the parents to

be involved to walk or sit on the float,” Jessica said. “A couple of children from Happy Haven (after school and vacation care) want to be involved as well so they’ll be walking next to us and we’re working with them to dress up.” Jessica admits that neither she nor her partner knew anything about the Yakkerboo festival until they moved into the area recently but that she is
now enjoying the lead up to this year’s celebrations. “My partner wants to bring his brother down (to the festival),” Jessica said. “I think it’s great, there’s a lot of community involvement, it’s fantastic.” The Yakkerboo float parade will begin at 11am on Sunday 23 April and will travel through Henry Street, John Street and Drake Place, Pakenham.

Last year Pakenham’s Yakkerboo festival was so successful that it broke the internet - literally. And with 56 stalls and a waiting list lined up to join this year’s celebrations, Yakkerboo is once again setting up to be another fabulous day out for the Pakenham community. Following last year’s festival, Yakkerboo’s social media event page went into overdrive with an incredibly high number of posts, comments and friend requests mixed together with the apparent nongenuine name seeing the page locked out. To fix this, the social
media page co-ordinator changed the name to ‘Pakenham Yakkerboo’ but spelt it ‘Yaakkerboo’, with the name change lasting 60 days. Yet, while Yakkerboo’s social media presence has returned to its correct spelling, early signs spotted by Yakkerboo festival president Ron Woodfine and his wife Karen suggest that this year’s event is set to rival last year’s successful event. “The market is already full with a waiting list,” Karen told the Gazette three weeks before the festival. “We have 56 stalls booked in for the market.” Taking place on both Main
and Station streets, the festival’s craft market is set to feature a number of food, toy, music, home-ware and sports stalls, with The Big Donut, Gelati Ice Cream, Timeless Toys, Miniature Guitars and Into Cushions among only a few of the stalls making up the packed marketplace. Supermarket giant Coles and pet superstore Petstock Pakenham will also feature with a stall, with the Cardinia Art Society, face painting, Lions Club of Pakenham and the Himalayan Sensations among the mix as well, making sure Yakerboo’s market contains something for everyone.

Quizzical character at centre By Rebecca Skilton Since 1976, the mythical Mr Yakkerboo has been working to unite the Pakenham and surrounding communities. Now in its 41st year, festival president Ron Woodfine and wife Karen are once again preparing to transform the streets of Pakenham into a world of celebrations. While the Woodfines lead the way for this year’s Yakkerboo festival, it’s a task that the Pakenham couple acknowledge can only be achieved through the outstanding support of the Pakenham community. A festival created by the people, for the people, Yakkerboo is a historic celebration of all things Pakenham. “I started out (at the festival) when I was asked to help with traffic and that sort of thing and I progressed up to the
committee,” Ron explained. “I’ve been vice-president for a few years and I got elected as president this year. It’s a really full on job for very few members. “But we get the job done. We get a lot of help and grants from the shire and we’ve recently got help from places like Holcim Building Materials, one of the Pakenham lawnmower places and Pakenham Produce ... all those sorts of local places. Without them, we couldn’t exist at all.” Designed with the help of Pakenham school children, the mythical figurehead of Mr Yakkerboo is a creature few can explain; his bewildering appearance emphasised by his question mark tail. Yet while Mr Yakkerboo may be an enigma of a creature, both Ron and Karen believe that the Yakkerboo
Festival acts as the perfect opportunity to bring the ever-expanding Pakenham community together. “We find that Pakenham and Lakeside can be like two entirely different suburbs,” Karen said. “There are so many new people coming in to Pakenham and a lot of people don’t know what Yakkerboo is. So it’s just explaining what it is to them and bringing everyone together.” Kicking off the Yakkerboo Festival will be Saturday night’s fireworks display at 9pm at Bourke Park. While rides will be open to the community at full-fee rate during the afternoon, on the day of the festival, $5 wristbands will be available for all-day access to every ride. As stated by last year’s festival president, Michael Porter, the small
fee for riding the carnival ride was a way to allow the festival to ‘be more self-sufficient and not rely so heavily on the shire’s grants.’ “We could see that if we weren’t going to start getting money in, we wouldn’t be doing well,” Ron explained. “So we decided last year that we were going to have a $5 wrist band and that will last all day for the bigger three rides (and) there will be other rides that kids can go on for free as well. The idea was accepted very, very well last year and we thought we’d do it again this year.” Sunday at Yakkerboo will also feature the greatly anticipated unique vehicle cavalcade, while at 11am the festival’s famous float parade will kick off, with this year’s participants encouraged to design their floats with a Disney theme in mind. The pa-
rade, which in the past has attracted up to 6000 community members, will tour through Henry Street, Drake Place and Railway Avenue, which will all be closed from 10.30am onward. While spectators and family members will also have the opportunity to make purchases throughout the market and raffle, Karen and Ron remind community members that the essence of Yakkerboo lies in simply bringing Pakenham together and enjoying the day with one another. “It’s a thing to get the community together ... people only have to spend what they want at the stalls and rides,” Karen said. “So basically it’s just a time for families to get together and have a good time ... it’s like Pakenham’s Moomba.”

Over four decades ago, former Shire of Pakenham secretary (CEO) Ray Canobie endeavoured to find a way to celebrate the accomplishments of an ever-expanding shire. He found his answer in the form of the annual Yakkerboo Festival and Street Parade. That festival and its mythical figurehead, Mr Yakkerboo, have come a long way and this year celebrate 41 years. It was in late 1974 when Ray was pondering the ways in which the Pakenham culture could be boosted. Aware that Pakenham had ‘something special’, he suggested the establishment of a festival committee, wanting to promote the achievements of local community members within and beyond the shire. “(The aim was) to nurture local talent and to promote pride in ourselves.” Ray explained, speaking at a dinner in 2006. “And of course have heaps of fun doing it!” Listening to Ray’s proposal, the council agreed to go ahead with the festival, with Ray employing a number of community members to help him make his concept a reality. With obvious enthusiasm and community support, Ray and his team now faced their next problem: a name for their festival. “We needed a catchy name for our festival. For my part I wanted something that would grab people’s attention and mentioned I was looking for something out of left field - something catchy,” Ray said. “It was in vogue those days to seek the community’s views, which we did through a public advertisement and liaison with community groups, including schools. From this came the suggestion of Yakkerboo, which was the Aboriginal word for place of green pastures.” Requiring a figurehead for the Yakkerboo festival, a Pakenham High School art teacher sketched a design, which was later taken to welder Norm Lemin, who brought Mr Yakkerboo to life in 1978. Yet while he was created through the efforts of local community members and school children, Mr Yakkerboo is a creature that few can definitively describe. Said to combine the features of a horse, giraffe and platypus, his mysterious nature is emphasised in his question mark shaped tail. But in April 1995, two days after celebrating his birthday, tragedy struck as Mr Yakkerboo was destroyed by fire while stored at the Pakenham racecourse. Following the loss, a public appeal was held to assist in funding a rebuild, which promptly saw the mythical creature put back together in time for the following year’s festival. Yet it wasn’t the last time Mr Yakkerboo was to be remodelled, having received a rebuild from David Tucker in 2016, whose talents lay in the fields of both engineering and fabrication fields. “He’s an iconic Pakenham figure,” David explained to the Gazette in 2016. “I wanted to rejuvenate him a bit.” Totalling around $2500 in materials alone, Mr Yakkerboo was stripped down to his frame before David, wife Lisa, son Cody and mate Terry Arnold used chicken wire, lycra, plaster and fibreglass to ensure Yakkerboo had a fresh new look and was ready to make his 40th birthday debut. Yet while he may have altered in appearance over his 41 years, the reason for Mr Yakkerboo’s presence within the growing Cardinia Shire has remained constant, a point of which was highlighted by Ray Canobie in 2006. “Those early days of Yakkerboo taught us about the power of communities - their enormous capacity to rise to challenges. Again, that holds true today. Communities which share a dream are more likely to enthusiastically support it,” Ray declared. “Communities achieve little in the absence of leadership and Yakkerboo has been very important in community development, showcasing achievement and bringing us all together.”

Sculpture is the talk of the town By Bonny Burrows and Rebecca Skilton An $80,000 bronze and steel sculpture of infamous local identity Mr Yakkerboo is standing tall in Pakenham’s Main Street. The artistic tribute to the town’s mythical bunyip-style swamp character is now complete, with its official unveiling scheduled for 20 April. Mr Yakkerboo is a symbolic character of Pakenham, born and bred in the imaginations of local residents in 1976. The beloved character is celebrated annually at the Yakkerboo Festival Parade with a street parade and carnival rides, to be held this year on 22 and 23 April. This is the first time a work commemorating Mr Yakkerboo has been commissioned by the Cardinia Council. It was created by Newcastle artist Julie Squires - with help from Cardinia Shire school children - and features Mr Yakkerboo with his new canine mate Blue. The former Melburnian had never heard of Yakkerboo before responding to a call for public submissions but quickly educated herself. “I’d spent a day researching the Yakkerboo ... and I just thought trying to teach people about the history of the area is really important,” Ms Squires said. Taking inspiration from the original Mr Yakkerboo, which was designed by primary school students, Ms Squires turned to local schools for assistance.

ing, and they’re all coming to the launch next week so I’m really looking forward to that - they’ll be trying to find which scale is theirs.”

The addition of Blue the blue heeler came from a need for Yakkerboo - with no arms - to engage with its surrounds. “I thought ‘well, he just can’t stand there not saying anything or having any gesture’, and another part of the history of the area was the cattle and farming industry, so I thought ‘why not put in a blue heeler’ which seemed to be the natural choice,” Ms Squires said. “So the statue’s called Mr Yakkerboo meets Blue.” Ms Squires said she was glad to see the feature piece had fast become a talking point for locals. “It’s interesting the people who recognise it and those who don’t. One little kid, his response was just to start clapping and go, ‘Yakkerboo, Yakkerboo,’ and I’m like, ‘yeah, that’s what I want’,” she said. She also praised the Pakenham community for embracing the beloved character of 40 years. “I just thought that a place like Pakenham had invented this character 40 years ago, and continued to have a festival running for 40 years is amazing,” Ms Squires said. “Most towns don’t have that.” The Yakkerboo festival will begin on Saturday 22 April with fireworks at Bourke Park at 9pm. Footsteps of Anzac PAKENHAM man Lachlan Smith is spending this Anzac Day following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather and father, while serving on operations in the Middle East. Lachlan’s great-grandfather served in Egypt during World War I. Seventy years later, Lachlan’s father deployed with the Royal Australian Air Force flying the UH-1H Iroquois helicopter in support of peace-keeping operations in the Sinai. Today, Signaller Smith, 24, is on his first deployment with Task Group Afghanistan on Operation Highroad Australia’s contribution to the NATO-led Resolute Support mission. With Anzac Day fast approaching, Signaller Smith is looking forward to commemorating the day. Over the next few months Signaller Smith will visit each of Task Group Afghanistan’s signals nodes before returning to Australia’s main operating base at Camp Baird and then on to Australia. Cyclist safety call By Helena Adeloju THE off-duty cycling death of police sergeant Ken Rich has prompted calls for bike lanes and bike trails to be built in Cardinia to avoid cyclist accidents and fatalities. The policeman was cycling with his daughter on the Princes Highway, Pakenham, on Good Friday when he was struck by a vehicle. Locals took to Facebook on Good
Friday just hours after reports of Sergeant Rich’s death had surfaced, calling on drivers to be more careful and suggesting practical action be taken to address cyclist safety. A Pakenham Gazette reader commented on the Sergeant Rich story, saying he might never ride again after he was struck by a vehicle recently. “I got hit by a car on the same road four weeks ago on my bike,” he wrote.
I don’t know if I can get back on the bike again.” He said something needed to be done to address the issue and suggested that “safe bike lanes” might be a solution. Another resident called for a “bike trail out this way.” Sergeant Paul Ziebell said there had been a number of cyclist fatalities on Cardinia roads over the years and urged people to share the road responsibly, keeping cyclists’ safety in mind.
“Motorists need to be mindful of their speed and aware that there are cyclists on the road,” he said. Local road cyclist and RPM instructor Tina Moonen, who was one of Sergeant Rich’s friends at Cardinia Life, said she felt more at risk on the road in Australia, than she did overseas. “Motorists in Europe and Asia tend to give cyclists more space and a wider berth on the road,” she said.
Ms Moonen welcomed suggestions of building bike lanes and trails to cater for the growing number of cyclists in Cardinia. “A lot of people are terrified of going out on our roads because of the lack of infrastructure as well as the attitudes of some drivers,” she said. “There needs to be more infrastructure for cyclists in Cardinia.”

News of his valour It was a sharp-eyed customer at a Berwick bank that first led Faye Axford into the embrace of the Victoria Cross ‘family’. Ms Axford, of Endeavour Hills, was simply told by the customer Bill Rogers as he held up a Berwick News front page in March: “You need to ring this guy”. The article was on Berwick author Michael Madden, who is well into his epic search for relatives of Australia’s 100 Victoria Cross awardees. Since Ms Axford gave Mr Madden a call, she has been interviewed for the book to talk about her two heroic ancestors Thomas ‘Jack’ Axford VC and Albert Jacka VC. If not for that call, she was unlikely to have had a chance meeting with one of the last people to see her great-uncle ‘Jack’ Axford alive. It was at a fund-raiser for Mr Madden’s VC book project at the Shrine of Remembrance in March when VC recipient Keith Payne revealed his link to ‘Jack’ to a captivated audience. Mr Payne told how he sat down to “have a yarn” with ‘Jack’ during a gathering of Victoria Cross and St George Cross medallists feted by the English Royal Family in London in 1983. The pair bonded closely over a “great long conversation” in the Union Jack Club as Mr Axford’s two sons took in the sights of London. “I heard more about the First World War from Jack than ever,” Mr Payne told his audience. “We sat and talked as two soldiers like I’ve never spoken before.” Both of them had post-traumatic stress from their war experience, Mr Payne said.

In the Australian War Memorial tribute, Mr Axford, on his own, attacked an enemy machine-gun position with just bombs and bayonet during the World War I Battle of Hamel in northern France. He killed 10 German troops and captured six, before the platoon joined his advance. In some quarters, the successful attack by Australian and US troops at Le Hamel was regarded as the turning point of the war. “I must have been mad,” Mr Axford reportedly later said of his courageous act.
On the flight back from the 1983 London visit - “on this side of Dubai” - Mr Axford died. Aboard the plane was Mr Payne, who informed cabin staff and organised for a message to be sent to Queen Elizabeth II. At Singapore airport, military and police cars assembled around the plane as Mr Axford’s body was disembarked. One of Mr Payne’s sons then escorted the body to Perth. “There’s the story of the Victoria Cross family - of what we do for each other,” Mr Payne told the event. On finishing his story, Mr Payne presented Albert Jacka VC’s replica medals to Faye Axford - who is a great-niece by marriage to Mr Jacka.
They had been mounted and encased by the Victoria Cross book author Michael Madden. In front of an audience including five families of Victoria-Cross recipients, it was as if Ms Axford had been ordained as part of the greater ‘family’. “Words can’t express what I’m feeling at the moment,” Ms Axford said. “This is just a surreal feeling to meet you.” Next year, she plans to tour Le Hamel, the scene of Lance-Corporal Axford’s awarded heroism and exactly 100 years after the event. “He won the Victoria Cross for saving the 15th Battalion,” she said. “I’m just so proud to be an Axford,” she said. In his labour of love, Mr Madden is compiling stories and photos to portray the real people behind the medals for his book The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers. All but 96 are deceased. Mr Madden feels no Victoria Cross recipient “disappears into the ether” because they all look out for one another. Yet Australia was also at a bit of a knife-edge, he said. “The Victoria Cross has moved from having living recipients to memory. “Now we are moving to the stage where we don’t have the people to remember them - and it is moving to legend.” All proceeds from his book The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers go to the charity Totally and Permanently Incapacitated Veterans’ Association. By Victoria Stone-Meadows Tenancy and consumer help services in the south-east have received a State Government funding boost which will see services in Cranbourne, Pakenham and Dandenong strengthened. More than $18 million over four years will be invested by the Andrews Government in the delivery of local assistance and advocacy services across the state. As part of the funding, $11.4 million will be shared among 13 community agencies including the Peninsula Community Legal Centre (PCLC). The PCLC advocates and provides advice for tenants across the south-east and bayside regions of Melbourne. According to Mission Australia, 15 per cent of homeless people seek help because of financial difficulties and 12 per cent are in housing crisis. They also state 10 per cent of people who are homeless have been living in inadequate or inappropriate dwelling conditions and a shortage of affordable housing and declining home ownership rates also contributes to the nation’s homelessness problem. Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gambling and Liquor Regulation Marlene Kairouz said the funding to community housing service providers would protect vulnerable members of the community. “These community organisations will assist and advocate on behalf of our most vulnerable renters and consumers.” “It isn’t always easy understanding your rights as a tenant or a consumer, so it’s vital Victorians get help and advice where and when they need it.” 7725BHC

A Sikh historical and religious New Year’s festival will be celebrated for the first time in Cardinia this month. The event will be hosted by the IACC on Sunday 23 April at the Pakenham Library. President of the Indian Association Cardinia Casey, Aanchal Meshram said Baisakhi was an iconic Indian cultural celebration. “Baisakhi marks the Sikh New Year and commemorates the formation
of Khalsa panth of warriors under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699,” she said. “It is also spring harvest festival for the Sikhs.” The evening will feature cultural performances by various groups showcasing Punjabi culture as well as games and activities for kids. Ms Meshram said the IACC was passionate about sharing Indian culture with the wider community. “We would like to celebrate Baisakhi with the people of Cardinia and Casey and showcase the Sikh culture,” she said.
Nearly 250 people are expected to attend the festival celebration which includes a buffet meal of traditional Indian cuisine in the price of entry. Soccer spruce-up appeals to world game By Cam Lucadou-Wells Berwick City Soccer Club has been heartened by Casey Council plans for a revamp of its cramped changerooms, inadequate parking and waterlogged pitches. In a report on 18 April, the council’s officers concluded a new pavilion at Jack Thomas Reserve, Narre Warren North needed to be built to meet the required standards. The report stated the reserve’s entrance road and car parking area would also be upgraded under Casey’s draft capital works program. Funding and timing of the projects were “subject to council adoption”, the report stated. The club’s previously water-logged pitch one had its turf oversown with rye-grass from late 2016, with future drainage and turf works coming on pitch two “subject to council approval”. Two floodlight poles will be upgraded in the 2016-’17 financial year, the report stated. The council is also seeking funding for a synthetic pitch at Berwick City’s second home at Sweeney Reserve, as well as similar pitches at Gleneagles Secondary College and Casey Fields Regional Soccer Complex. After years of lobbying including a recent petition of 800-plus signatures, Berwick City club president Joe Di Iorio said the club was buoyed by recent positive meetings with Casey officers and councillors and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan. “We are expecting council to approve the design of a master plan for Jack Thomas Reserve in the 2017-’18 budget with construction the following year.” Mr Di Iorio said the club - the largest of its kind in Casey - continued to grow beyond 800 members and 50 teams. CFA woes aired By Cam Lucadou-Wells Alarms at Narre Warren North CFA brigade have been running hot. Since 2011, emergency call outs have nearly doubled from 164 calls a year to 299 mainly due to urban growth, the brigade’s captain Mark Dobrich says. During a recent visit by Deputy Premier James Merlino, Mr Dobrich pitched the case for more firefighting appliances and car parking at the fully volunteer 70-year-plus brigade. Mr Merlino - also Emergency Services Minister - fielded questions about the protracted negotiations over the CFA’s structure and its impact on the brigade’s volunteers. Mr Dobrich talked up the
value of volunteer firefighters to see risks, problems and solutions that professional “career firefighters” cannot. “Volunteers are also well trained and disciplined, but the volunteer provides something else -diversity. “In the volunteer ranks of any CFA brigade, you not only have highly skilled, experienced and dedicated firefighters but you also have builders, doctors, plumbers, electricians, nurses, engineers, IT specialists. “It is this diversity of skill, knowledge and experience that is the true strength of the volunteer brigade and of the organisation that is CFA.” The brigade’s two trucks - a tanker and a pumper - were adequate for now, but were under
increasing demand from outer suburbia, Mr Dobrich said. “This demand is expected to increase as the area continues to grow.” The town - embedded in rural and bush landscapes - was also at significant fire risk, as illustrated by Black Saturday. Mr Dobrich was satisfied the 40-strong volunteer brigade had enough members, but its parking area was likely to be “squeezed” by a planned duplication of Narre Warren North Road. “Our numbers give us capacity to respond to the (urban) growth. “The issue is around the growth of the area. It affects the ability of people to get to the station and where we’re going to park.”

Our robots set to take on the world By Victoria Stone-Meadows The VEX robotics team from Hillcrest College in Clyde North is heading to the USA to compete against 30 other countries in an international robotics championship. The Hillcrest VEX team will be competing to defend the title they first won at the world championship in 2015. The team became back-to-back Australian champions after winning the Australian VEX robotics competition in Wangaratta in December 2016. The team received an award for ex-
cellence at the completion last year and were selected to represent Australia at the VEX world Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. The competition is the largest STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) event in the world with 500 teams from over 30 countries competing over four days. The VEX team from Hillcrest will be competing against teams from Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom
and the USA. Casey Council’s Enviro News Team has recently released a very disappointing autumn edition of Casey’s “Enviro News". Readers are not informed about the serious risks presented by climate change and global warming to the environment, rather the bulletin is headed by an image of an Anzac soldier and a reference to their sacrifices and native Australian trees along Casey’s Avenue of Honour. The fact is there is absolutely no historical link between Anzac soldiers and any respect by them for the natural environment. Many thousands of lives were sacrificed (and the environment compromised) because of Australia’s subservience to British imperialism in WWI. The individuals and groups who did a lot, indirectly, for the natural environment, and peace, by successfully organising against referenda for compulsory military conscription,during WWI, are not even mentioned at Casey’s Avenue of Honour. How bad is that? Moreover, for a bulletin that’s supposed be about our environment, there is no mention of the biggest threat we face today. Global warming has the potential to impact on the very process that creates energy and ultimately sustains all life on earth, photosynthesis. Instead of Enviro News readers being informed about climate science, we are asked to believe that militarism and the Anzacs were actually good for the environment. Really? AS our national day of remembrance, Anzac Day will be commemorated by us soon, I thought it might be timely to share with you a little history of this special day. Originally, 25 April every year was to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) who fought at Gallipoli against the Ottoman Empire in World War I. It has since become a national day of remembrance for all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. In 1915, Australian and New Zealand forces formed part of an allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula, which was according to a plan by Winston Churchill, to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied navies. Upon arrival at Gallipoli on 25 April, the Anzacs met a fierce resistance from the Ottoman Army, which was commanded by Mustafa Kemal (later known as Ataturk). Whilst the objective was to capture Constantinople and give the allied forces a strategic advantage in its fight against Germany, the allies reached a stalemate and after an eight-month campaign, were evacuated, during which time both sides suffered heavy casualties, including 8709 Australians and 2721 New Zealanders giving their lives for our countries. This campaign bequeathed an intangible and powerful legacy, which has later become known as Anzac Legend and is often described as being the moment of birth of the nationhood of Australia and New Zealand. Perhaps equally remarkable was the sense of spirit shown by the then leader of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, with the words that were delivered to the first Australians, New Zealanders and British people to visit the Gallipoli battlefields in 1934. The words have since been inscribed in a monolith at Anzac

James is one of 12 children to have won a spot on the Creative Crew at the Legoland Discovery Centre, winning a year’s free pass to the newlyconstructed fantasy-land at Chadstone shopping centre. Already, he’s had an exclusive road-test of the centre’s giddy mix of attractions and 1.5 million-plus blocks. And he’s an enthusiastic fan of all of it, including interactive rides with laser pointers, a 4D cinema and a mini-Melbourne made of Lego blocks. In his 30-second video pitch for his spot on the crew, James breathlessly describes himself as “your biggest fan”. “I was born for Lego,” he said. “I breathe Lego and my life literally revolves around Lego.” As part of his ‘duties’, James will help show kids around at the centre’s grand opening on 18 April. He savoured the engineering challenges - such as building a car out of blocks to race down a timed track, or making structures to withstand a simulated earthquake. He raved about the 4D cinema that screens 3D films with further atmospheric ‘dimensions’ - like smoke, rain and wind - unleashed in the auditorium. Shadow planning minister David Davis has lashed out at the Andrews Government for reinvesting only a pittance of Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) funds collected in the Casey-Cardinia region. Just over $2 million has been reinvested in the Casey-Cardinia region after a combined GAIC collection from the region raised $59.3 million at the end of 30 June 2016, according to the 2016 DELWP report. Mr Davis has accused the premier of hoarding the money and not providing investment returns to communities in Casey and Cardinia. “There is money available to relieve pressure on suburban families, but Daniel Andrews is refusing to help,” he said. “Under Daniel Andrews there are always winners and losers, and today the losers are everyday Victorians.” The 2016 annual report from the Department on Environment, Land, Water and Planning shows that only 3.4 per cent of the money collected has been spent in the Casey-Cardinia growth area. Money is raised through the GAIC when land in designated growth areas is bought, subdivided or a permit for building on large blocks of land is applied for. The GAIC money is then set aside for community and public transport infrastructure projects in the growth areas it was collected from. However, DELWP has confirmed in the 2016’17 financial year, the infrastructure spending of GAIC collections will ramp up. “So far this financial year, the Victorian Government has announced $19.2 million worth of projects from GAIC to build infrastructure where it is most needed, including $8.5 million to purchase land for six new ambulance stations,” a DELWP spokesperson said.
Victorian Shadow Minister for Planning David Davis wants to see more money invested in the Casey-Cardinia region. The method that GAIC funds are administered has also been reformed this financial year to ensure a more collaborative approach to funding allocation. “The new process ensures that important state infrastructure is provided to growth areas, in time to meet community needs.” “Applications for funding in the 2017-’18 financial year have been sought from portfolio ministers and are now under consideration.” “The government expects expenditures to catch up to revenue in the coming rounds and for the fund to deliver on its original intention over 20 years.”

On the eve of Wear Green for Premmies Day, St John of God Berwick Hospital welcomed a gorgeous little girl born at 36 weeks. Even though her parents may not have been ready for her unexpected entry into the world, the hospital was indeed well equipped for Indiana’s early arrival. Given that St John of God Berwick Hospital has a level two special care nursery on site with eight consultant paediatricians who work in rotation and are on call 24 hours a day, premature babies born from about 34 weeks onward and weighing 1700 grams can expect to be well cared for by the hospital’s qualified staff. Although premature birth remains a major source of getting some extra special attention from St John of God Hospital staff, it’s not the only one. Babies who might be experiencing breathing difficulties, jaundice, low blood sugar levels or temperature instability could also require the expertise of the hospital’s highly trained medical professionals. Following the birth of a baby at St John of God Berwick Hospital, parents can be rest assured that they and their babies are in good hands. Come and try careers By Victoria Stone-Meadows High school students from Casey and beyond will have the opportunity to flesh out their perfect career path at the 2017 South East Careers Expo and Try a Trade. The expo will give students and others a hands-on glimpse into a variety of careers and career paths they wish to take. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the expo would be the perfect setting for students
to really get a handle on figuring out what they wanted to do in the future. “With interactive displays for people to try out, those who come along and take advantage will really get a feel for the type of work they’d like to do,” he said. “Getting a good feel for an industry, whether it be hairdressing or building, can help any young person decide if it’s something they would like to further explore.”
“It’s the ideal way for young people to feel more informed when exploring a range of industries and occupations, and can also help them plan for an exciting future.” Cr Aziz also said the guidance and advice made accessible to those that attend would be invaluable. “Ensure your child doesn’t miss out on seeking the guidance and inspiration that will help them prepare for a bright and fulfilling post-school future, and
check that their school is booked to attend,” he said. The 2017 South East Careers Expo and Try a Trade Expo will be on Tuesday 2 May from 9am to 3pm at the Cranbourne Racecourse. This event is made possible through support from the City of Casey, Casey Cardinia Shire Council, the South East Local Learning and Employment Network, Cranbourne Racecourse and media partner, Star News Group.

The expo will give students and others a hands-on glimpse into a variety of careers and career paths they wish to take. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the expo would be the perfect setting for students to really get a handle on figuring out what they wanted to do in the future. “With interactive displays for people to try out, those who come along and take advantage will really get a feel for the type of work they’d like to do,” he said. “Getting a good feel for an industry, whether it be hairdressing or building, can help any young person decide if it’s something they would like to further explore.” “It’s the ideal way for young people to feel more informed when exploring a range of industries and occupations, and can also help them plan for an exciting future.” Cr Aziz also said the guidance and advice made accessible to those that attend would be invaluable. “Ensure your child doesn’t miss out on seeking the guidance and inspiration that will help them prepare for a bright and fulfilling post-school future, and check that their school is booked to attend,” he said. The 2017 South East Careers Expo and Try a Trade Expo will be on Tuesday 2 May from 9am to 3pm at the Cranbourne Racecourse. This event is made possible through support from the City of Casey, Casey Cardinia Shire Council, the South East Local Learning and Employment Network, Cranbourne Racecourse and media partner, Star News Group.

Sensory aide to learning By Victoria Stone-Meadows Lyndhurst Primary School will be getting a sensory garden for outdoor learning, thanks to local developer Wolfdene. The garden will have a number of different tactile and sensory experiences for students to engage with to aide educational and recreational leaning. Lyndhurst Primary School assistant principal Elaine Lesuik said the garden would be great for all students but particularly those with learning difficulties. “A space such as this will be particularly beneficial for those students who are struggling to learn within the traditional school curriculum and the overall benefits for the entire school will be immeasurable,” she said. “Having a sensory garden has been a goal for Lyndhurst Primary School for many years however, due to funding and other priorities, we never quite got there until Wolfdene Community came on board.” The estimated value of the project is about $40,000 and Wolfdene community have partnered with Frankston-based company, Glascott Landscape and Civil. The garden is expected to be completed by the end of April with students being able to utilise the new space in term two of the school year.

Drought breaks for Jaz By Russell Bennett It’s hard to imagine victory ever tasting sweeter than it did for the Vic Country girls at the Under-18 national basketball championships in Townsville on the weekend, and Pakenham’s Jaz Shelley played a pivotal part in the droughtbreaking triumph. Vic Country hadn’t won an Under-18 championship since 2000, and Shelley’s side picked one hell of a way to change that - winning by the narrowest of margins, 60-59, over South Australia Metro in an absolute thriller. The Victorians were ahead by nine points with less than four minutes remaining in the contest before South Australia responded with an 8-0 run courtesy of Samantha Simons (15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists) and Zoe WalkerRoberts. There were no easy shots allowed by either side over the final two minutes, and Vic Country was held scoreless for the final four minutes and 33 seconds, but somehow, through sheer grit and determination, the Vics hung on for dear life to claim gold. Shelley described the win as one of the best she’s been involved in - placing it just behind Australia’s Under-17 world championship win over the powerhouse
United States last year. “The most special thing about it was that we made history,” said Shelley of the Vic Country win, in which she finished with 13 points and 5 boards. “It’s a pretty surreal feeling.” Shelley said Vic Country’s performances in the games leading up to the decider were particularly strong, but the tension and cutthroat pressure of a national championship game had an impact on both teams. “It just came down to who wanted it more,” she said. Remarkably, Shelley had a cyst removed from her eyelid just before Vic Country’s quarter-final. It had been affecting her vision, and causing plenty of discomfort. But that has faded into the background with the national title win. “Most of us had been together as a group for four years, and this was our last chance to win together,” Shelley said. “We had each other’s backs and we were just so determined to win.” Speaking after the win, Vic Country coach Gerard Hillier could barely contain his joy at the result, and the performance from his side. “We keep saying as a team that they’re country tough,” he said.
The girls from Vic Country paused for a celebratory selfie after their win. “There’s a lot of adversity going against them already - just to get to trainings and games and participate in these events - and it certainly toughens them up. “They’ve shown that this week at this event and it’s a credit to them. “We’re so happy for the players, managers and coaches from Vic Country who weren’t lucky enough to medal and this is for them as well - Vic Country is a great program and I’m really happy for all of them.” Next up for Shelley is the tryouts for Australia’s Under-19 world championship team, which will compete in Italy mid-year.

Continuing its growing reputation as a force in the thoroughbred racing industry in Victoria, Racing.com Park features prominently with the release of calendar dates by Racing Victoria for the 2017/18 racing season. Pakenham Racing Club’s Racing.com Park will host 41 race meetings making it the most active of all racecourses in the state. 135-point thrashing By David Nagel Doveton full-forward Taylor Joyce has upstaged former Melbourne stars Russell Robertson and Daniel Ward with an 11-goal haul in the Doves mightily impressive 135-point victory over Hampton Park on Good Friday. Joyce ran rampant in the first half, kicking four in the first quarter and three in three minutes at the start of the second, heading to half time with nine on the board. Only the great work of Hampton Park youngster, CJ Layfield, kept things in check in the second half. A big crowd turned out at Robert Booth Reserve to see if Robertson and Ward could bring some competitiveness to a side that has won just four of its last 84 outings. The answer -well it was an emphatic no! The Redbacks were too loose at the stoppages in the first half -ball huntingallowing the likes of Michael Henry, Sam Raru, Nick Battle and Lachie Batten to take full advantage of Russell Gabriel’s dominant form in the ruck. Gabriel monstered hard-working but ill-equipped types like Heath Peach, Aaron Holden and Tom Marshall to provide his midfield with a feast of Easter goodies. The Doves led by six goals at quarter time, 82 points at the half, before entering the last term with an 89-point lead. Joyce and Gabriel were outstanding for the Doves while Henry added four goals to five against Officer from round one. Layfield, Josh Craig and Jackson Philpin were best for the Redbacks. This week’s match of the day sees Beaconsfield travel to Fox Road to take on Narre Warren. The Eagles defeated the Magpies by 13 points in last year’s first semi-final.
The Magpies seem to have better balance this season, with brothers Jack and Matt Soroczynski and Jack Wheeler have tremendous pace off half back, feeding off bullocking types like Michael Collins, Dylan Quirk and Hayden Stagg. Nick and Stewie Scanlon have added depth to the front half, while Jayden Bubb is providing a giant figure in the ruck. He faces the ultimate challenge this week against three-time Norm Walker Medallist Scott Meyer. The Magpies should get the points on their home deck. In other games, Officer will look for its first victory at Toomuc Reserve this millennium when it makes the short trip to take on Pakenham. And, on face value, the Kangaroos would appear to have the better form line. They have matched motors with both Doveton and Narre Warren over the first two rounds of the season before a 15-minute lapse in concentration cost them dearly. Cory Phillips and Mat Jones have dimmed the focus on regular midfielders like Chris Larosa, Blair Allan and Ben Tivendale, while Andrew Dike and Luke Nunan have given James Waldon a huge chop-out down back. But just what confronts them this weekend. The Lions have signed Jayden Bootsma -the brother of former Carlton player Josh- from Kambalda in Western Australia, while JP Kelantumama will make his senior debut after heading in from the Tiwi Islands. The Kangaroos should still get the choccies in a close one. Cranbourne will be too powerful for Tooradin at Casey Fields while Berwick will look to boost its percentage against Cellar-dweller Hampton Park. Doveton has the bye.

New appointments to AFL South East AFL South East Chairman Roger Hampson has announced additions to the AFL South East governance structure. The Region General Manager position, vacated by Jeremy Bourke, has been filled by John Anderson, who has been in the interim role since January, now being appointed to the role on a permanent basis. Anderson’s most recent experience has been as CEO of Harness Racing Victoria and prior to that as CEO of the Melbourne Football Club. There have also been two appointments to the AFL South East Commission to fill AFL Victoria approved vacancies. The new Commission appointments are: Molina Asthana: Molina is a Principal Solicitor with the Victorian Solicitor General’s Office, who also holds several Board positions within the legal profession. Molina
is an AFL Multicultural Community Ambassador and on the AFL advisory Committee for multicultural engagement. She is also founder of the organisation Multicultural Women in Sport which aims to empower migrant women from multicultural backgrounds through sport. Anita Jonceski: Anita has extensive experience in State Government Departments, predominantly with the Department of Justice, in the area of strategic communication. Anita’s most recent
experience is as a communication advisor within the Commission for Children and Young People with responsibilities in the areas of Child Safe Standards and Reportable Conduct. Mr Hampson said that these appointments add value to the AFL South East Commission particularly in the management, legal, communications and multicultural areas and we wish Molina, Anita and John well in their new positions. Other recent additions to the Commission have been representative appointments for the respective competitions, namely Doug Bailey (SEJ) and Ryan Ford (SEFNL). The Commission now comprises Roger Hampson (Chairman), Russell Jacgung, Scott Grimster, Ted Turner, Paul Theobald, Molina Asthana, Anita Jonceski, Bryan Payne, Ryan Ford and Doug Bailey.

President receives life membership PAKENHAM GOLF Last Friday night Pakenham Golf Club held their 2017 Presentation Night, during which members were very proud to award the club’s seventh Life Membership to President Rob Nobelius. Rob was presented his achievement by life-long friend Theo Van Roy. Congratulations to Rob on this much deserved honour - he is the epitome of what Pakenham Golf Club stands for and has set the tone and culture for a club with a very bright and successful future. Rob has dedicated himself and his time to the Pakenham Golf Club over many years, sitting on various committees, sub committees, Captain of the club and in his current role as President. Rob and a small band of amazing people have also been a critical part of keeping the club afloat during a period of devastation when the club was left with no money, he was a leader when the club was in need and has helped steer the ship back on course.
