GLENDA Gwin, a member of the Combined Probus Club of Kardinia, has excelled in an unusual sport for more than 45 years - and is still heavily involved in both the sport and its administration.

Glenda was first given a Welsh Mountain Pony by her parents for her eighth birthday - little did they know that it would become her obsession and that by the time she was 15 she would show her Welsh Mountain Pony at competition level.

At the age of 20 she was not only a competitor and a breeder but also on the judging panel for various horse breeds at country shows as well as the Royal Melbourne Show.

As the family moved properties from Wattle Park, to Bayswater, and Narre Warren her breeding interest increased and so she purchased three Welsh Mountain Pony mares from the renowned ‘Fairway Stud’ at Lilydale, owned then by the late Norma Brookes (now owned by Bruce Rowland of “Man From Snowy River” fame), which resulted in the development of her top show horses. Glenda shifted from the Melbourne area in the 1980s to a property at Gherang, south of Geelong, where she now continues to breed for sale - and for show - Welsh Mountain Ponies as well as Australian Miniature Ponies.

She has sold her ponies throughout Australia and many of those sold have gone on to win prizes at state and country horse shows, for which she is also proud.

Glenda herself has won hundreds of trophies and garlands from shows throughout Australia, the most prominent being at the Royal Sydney Show, the Royal Melbourne Show, the Royal Adelaide Show and the “Barastoc - Horse of the Year Show”, which is the National horse

New weapon in superbug war VICTORIAN researchers will pioneer a world leading study using genomic sequencing technology to improve the control of superbugs in hospitals and better protect patients from infections.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy has announced the next five disease areas for Victoria’s ground-breaking genomic sequencing project led by the Melbourne Genomics Health Alliance.

The Andrews Labor Government is investing $25 million in the genomic sequencing capability project, which will see around 2000 Victorians access genomic sequencing tests over four years.

Ms Hennessy said that, through this project, more patients were receiving a

life-changing medical diagnosis for the first time and getting the better care and treatment they need to improve their health outcomes.

“Victoria is leading the world when it comes to genomic sequencing, and its application in the fight against superbugs is yet another revolutionary step forward,” she said.

“It has the power to identify potential superbug outbreaks before they become a real threat to the most vulnerable of patients.”

Genomic sequencing speeds up the diagnosis of rare and complex genetic conditions. A genomic sequencing test can read the DNA from all 20,000 of our genes

at the same time, enabling scientists to analyse all the genes relevant to a patient’s condition in one test.

Now the revolutionary test will be used to better protect our hospitals and patients from antibiotic-resistant bacteria by building a real-time superbug tracking system across multiple hospitals.

The technology will be used to accurately identify superbugs and map how they are spreading. This means we can know more about the superbug quicker, improve control and prevent further spread to high-risk patients.

Patients at particular risk from superbugs include those in intensive-care units, those being treated for cancers or

particular blood disorders, and transplant recipients.

Other disease areas selected by the Alliance are: Genomic sequencing in bone marrow failure to offer a quicker and more accurate diagnosis; Better and earlier diagnosis of complex neurological and neurodegenerative diseases such as early-onset dementia, early-onset motor neurone disease and certain forms of Parkinson’s disease; A more accurate diagnosis of genetic kidney disease, and Improving understanding of causes of multiple abnormalities in babies who die in utero or early in infancy.

New life members are humbled FOUNDING members Rene Vivian, Phyl Cramer and Alice Laird were humbled and surprised to be made life members at the 25th birthday celebration for the Horsham East Ladies Probus Club in March.

They join the club’s only other life members Val Watt and Lorna Rentsch in a select group.

Long-serving member Margaret Woodford received a 20-year badge at the celebration.

A total of 32 foundation members attended the club’s inaugural meeting at the Horsham RSL on 2 March 1992 and membership has steadily grown since.

Members participate in a lot of community activities, including the annual selling of Anzac

Day badges and Remembrance Day poppies.

The Horsham East Ladies elected office-bearers for 2017-’18 at the 25th anniversary meeting. They are president Margaret Woodford, vice-president Joan Parker, secretary Nola Bellinger, assistant secretary Denise Dobson, treasurer Trish Reinheimer, membership officer Dawn Hobbs, assistant membership officer Lorna Rentsch, trip organisers Marion Seater, Ruth Walter and Cheryl Bell, guest speaker organiser Jenny Sonego, welfare officer Mary McKenry, publicity officer Rene Vivian, magazines Margaret Schreck, newsletter Raelene Pfeiffer, club service Dian Ballinger and immediate past president Raelene Pfeiffer.

HELLO Probians, our plans for 2017 have already taken up most of this year’s diary, with lots of happy activities for you all to participate in.

With the usual fantastic Golf Day, bowls has been reinvigorated this year and large friendship days held in different areas of the state.

The 500 Cards tournament has successfully found a new club to take over the reins next year.

There is so much to enjoy with our friends in Probus.

Excitingly, the PAVulous weekend in Swan Hill in November is looking great, with many items on the itinerary.

Northern Arctic adventure lights up Kathy Rivett FROM the moment we arrived in Oslo, Norway, our group were ready to experience everything that our Northern Arctic Adventure tour had to offer.

Starting in Oslo we saw up close how scary and high the Holmenkollen Olympic Ski jump is, then visited the famous Vigeland Sculpture Park, an amazing timeless open air exhibition of people and the circle of life.

Our tour saw us on one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world from Oslo to Bergen via the quaint town of Voss, spending a night in the Fleischers Hotel, a popular holiday destination for Royalty throughout the years.

We stopped at frozen waterfalls that had torrents of water flowing beneath the ice and saw colourful

fishing villages dotted along the shore of the fjords.

Every extended stop our Hurtigruten ship made to Norwegian fjord coastal villages saw the group experiencing new adventures as the ship carried out the important role of delivering supplies and mail to these isolated communities.

From bus or walking tours of the fishing villages to dog sledding, to the stunning North Cape tour which took us to the northernmost point of the European continent, there were numerous photographic opportunities.

At North Cape, we had to follow a snow plough in our bus convoy to ensure the road stayed visible in an area that is renowned for weather changes in the blink of an eye. And what a view once we arrived - the grandeur of the moon scape of untouched snow and the sheer cliffs of the cape, covered in deep white powdery snow.

Mother Nature put on a show of Northern lights during the northern part of our cruise when just after dinner the sky lit up with dancing white lights that turned green once photographed.

The ship had two more alerts the same night for guests to scramble out of their cabins to view the lights exploding in curtains across the dark sky.

We had another opportunity to witness the lights during our stay at Saariselka when the sky exploded in a green and purple display that lasted only around five minutes, but will stay with those that witnessed it for a lifetime.

It was here from the Santa’s Hotel in Saariselka that we headed off through the breathtaking scenery of Finland on a reindeer safari, taking us on a journey through the snow-covered countryside before hearing the story of the reindeer farmers of the region and how the reindeer are set free each summer to graze the countryside returning in

winter to be fed and cared for by farmers.

There were lots of adventures to try in Saariselka with some of the group doing a snowmobiling expedition and another heading off on some cross-country skiing.

The following day saw us bring out our inner child when we visited Santa’s village in Finnish Lapland. We were all in awe meeting the REAL Santa.

Two of our group gave Santa a letter from their granddaughter that he read out, all whilst being videoed. Their family can now log into the link and see it - it was a special moment for them to be able to share. We visited Santa’s workshop and village, sending off postcards and enjoying a reindeer burger, taking photos of the Arctic Circle markers, and of course buying some souvenirs from this famous village.

We travelled to Sinetta, where we not only got to stay in a unique glass-topped, heated igloo, but also toured the ice hotel.

At Rovaneimi we visited the extraordinary Arctic museum then we headed south to Helsinki, touring the city and sights, and sailing on a ferry larger than a lot of cruise ships, to the medieval town of Tallinn, Estonia.

Staying overnight in Estonia, we enjoyed a fabulous medieval feast in a candlelit restaurant with musicians playing ancient instruments that took everyone to an era we have only ever read about in history books. We walked through the walled town and saw unique churches, ancient buildings, and paved roadways in one of the best preserved medieval towns in the world.

Apple Isle soul explored in Spirit A joint venture of 21 Kingsbury and four Preston Probus Club members set off on the Spirit of Tasmania on 24 November to spend five days travelling around the beautiful Apple Isle.

Some did not enjoy their first night as the sea decided to play rough and quite a few passengers became ill, but the morning brought smiles to the faces as they all disembarked on dry land.

Breakfast at Elizabeth Town Café was enjoyed by all, and after a rest the group was back on the bus heading for Deloraine.

There they visited Yarns and were shown artwork made out of quilted silk panels depicting the four seasons.

They then visited the award winning garden Pioneer Walk, where they saw the Folk Museum, showcasing the lives, tools and farming equipment of early settlers.

Next the group visited the Convict Brick Trail in Campbelltown, where there is a single line of bricks recording the lives of every convict who reached Australia.

It was then back on the bus to Swansea through the Freycinet National Park with its dramatic pink granite peaks of the Hazards Range, before going to Wineglass Bay, where the slaughtering of whales years ago turned the water a ruby red just like wine.

It was off to Hobart, crossing Spiky Bridge and passing through

Oxford to stay three nights at the Wrest Point Casino Motel.

Next morning it was back on the bus to visit Mount Nelson Lookout, with spectacular views of Hobart and Bruny Island.

This is the site of the first signal station built in 1811, which once linked Hobart Town to Port Arthur.

Then it was down to Huon Valley with its lovely fresh fruit and fishing farms.

An enjoyable two hours was spent visiting Salamanca Market for some shopping, then back on

the bus for a tour of city sights before changing for a dinner cruise on the Derwent River.

The next day it was off to Port Arthur to visit the penal colony, which included a cruise around the Isle of the Dead, before heading back to Hobart passing through Doo Town (all places have Doo in their name).

Eaglehawk Neck was next, with Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen.

The next day the touring party left Hobart and travelled via Ross to visit the Tasmanian Wool Centre.

The afternoon was spent visiting Woolmers Estate Historic Homestead and the National Rose Garden, arriving in Launceston that evening.

The last day of the journey was spent at Cataract Gorge and then driving through the Tamar Valley on the way to the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre before the final stop at Sheffield, the town of murals.

A warm thanks was extended to guide Tony of Spirit Travel and bus driver Teddy for making the holiday most enjoyable.

Wonderful Wanderers outing EVENT number 32 for the Probian Wanderers saw 80 members attending, including 14 first-timers.

President Joan Vogels OAM, attended and found herself recorded on the photographic history of the Wanderers at its very first event, held at Ballarat in October, 2001 - also in a number of subsequent events.

Welcome back to the fold, Joan!

Members were treated to a variety of weather from wet to deluge to quite hot.

Many of the early arrivals explored the extensive Sunday market on the foreshore, which necessitated a very quick retreat as a mass of black clouds approached. It was almost standing room only at the nearby Rivers store as the heavens opened the floodgates.

By Tuesday the weather had abated to threats only, and walkers were out in force early, taking in the proliferation of new buildings around the township, later indulging in some retail therapy.

The evening meal was partaken at the Torquay Hotel - a one-course only.

Management had assured members that one course was quite adequate, which was certainly a fair assessment.

Wednesday began for many with a brisk walk along the foreshore tack, taking in the beautiful views out to sea.

Traditionally picnic day, we next set off for Aireys Inlet. With temperature in to the 30s, every bit of shade was utilised.

Some of the braver among us trudged up to the lighthouse and along the cliff-tops for the glorious views. Others motored down toward Lorne to view the Archway, start of the Great Ocean Road, where bronze statues and tablets pay

Then it was back to camp for ’happy hour’ and a visit by members of the Torquay Combined Probus Club.

Thursday and we were off to Anglesea Golf Club for “lunch-out” - a great meal, topped off by the most delicious sticky date pudding, said to be a secret potion of the chef.

From Friday, some members departed, and it was “wind-down” for the remainder, to catch up with other attractions previously missed.

In all, members voted another successful event.

Queen offers congratulations JOYCE and Joe Sacco first met at the ages of 16 and 19 respectively in Seddon.

They married at St Augustines Church, Yarraville a year later, on 6 April, 1957.

They settled down in Middle Footscray and started a family. They have been blessed with a wonderful family, having had three daughters. They now have four granddaughters and three great-grandsons.

Their first great-grandson, Luca, was born on their 55th wedding anniversary.

Joyce and Joe moved to St Albans, living there for 24 years before moving to Keilor Downs for a further 12 years. They built their holiday home at St Leonards in 1972, subsequently moving there permanently over 20 years ago.

They have been members of the Probus

Club of St Leonards for over 13 years and have been involved in many of the club’s activities.

Joe was instrumental in starting up the club’s bowling group and has a perpetual trophy named after him.

Many other Probus lawn bowls groups participate in our club’s annual pennant bowls day.

Joyce and Joe have received congratulatory messages from the Queen, Governor-General, the Prime Minister and their local member of parliament, Richard Marles.

THE Probian has a new publisher.

Star News Group, a proudly family owned and independent media group, has been appointed by the Probus Association of Victoria to produce its official newsletter.

Managing director Paul Thomas represents the fourth generation of his family to hold the reins of the company, which publishes newspapers, magazines and news websites across Victoria and in areas of Queensland.

Paul’s great grandfather Albert Edward Thomas started the tradition back in September 1909 when he first produced the Berwick Shire News and Pakenham and Cranbourne Gazette.

That paper is still produced today as the Pakenham-Berwick Gazette.

Star has a head office in Pakenham and other offices in Geelong and Healesville in Victoria and Noosa and Warwick in Queensland. In Melbourne’s west, Star jointly owns six titles under the Star Weekly mastheads, which are produced out of Keilor.

Mr Thomas said Star was thrilled to take on The Probian and looked forward to working with the association and clubs to build and improve the product.

He acknowledged Graeme Goodson from GWG Holdings for his work in getting the publication to the standard it is today.

“We are grateful that Graeme will continue with The Probian, along with sales staff Mike Curtin, Ian Milton and Barry Hodge,” Mr Thomas said.

“I would also like to thank Joan Vogels, Rod James and the PAV executive for placing their confidence in Star.”

100 reasons to smile MEMBERS of the Combined Probus Club of Tunstall celebrated Lesley Ricketson’s wonderful 100th milestone at their recent meeting.

She was presented with a small gift and card from club members.

Lesley, who has been an active member of the club since its establishment, kept members spellbound when she gave her life story at a recent meeting.

Paynesville Probus gets away SIX caravan couples and another 16 Paynesville Probus members taking cabins enjoyed 10 days away together, with the trip starting in Seymour.

From there a group visited the Puckapunyal Army Museum by prior arrangement and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the centre of town.

Next the club travelled to Swan Hill, camping on the grassy banks of the Murray River.

members (very) early morning and evening and they basked in wonderful warm weather, but were also thankful for the shady trees on the banks.

Around 10 members enjoyed the Light Show at the Pioneer Settlement, as well as a dinner at the club.

A cruise on the paddleboat Pyap was also enjoyable, and our group made good use of the barbecue area and airconditioned camp kitchen.

Boort, the next stop was Bendigo.

The talking tram was popular, walks around Lake Weeroona and shopping were a hit with many more shops than we see locally.

A group took the train from Bendigo to Castlemaine township while others drove, finding the Restoration Shed a few had heard about and coffee at one of the cafes.

Members take in the sights at Warrnambool.

A Club’s Committee Lament THIS poem produced in the Probus Club of Bairnsdale’s annual report touches on an issue felt by a lot of Probus Clubs statewide.

The year has come around and elections are due, You trust that someone will supersede you, But few volunteer, for that is the way And to form a committee, there’s often a delay.

Most members have reasons, or have a complaint: “I can’t be elected for it makes me feel faint“.

Others have gout or a pain in the toe, While some say they travel, but when they don’t know.

So! You’re still on the committee, now that’s what I hear, Your stuck with the task, it’s become a career, For there’s only the few, some 20 per cent Who’ll serve on the committee and give their consent, So don’t be too cross and filled with dismay At the 80 per cent who refuse on the day, And don’t be a critic of those that don’t share The duties of office or assume they don’t care.

We’re members of Probus, we’re old and we’re grey, But never too old to find a new way.

Now this club has existed for thirty-odd years, A lot of you have served and so have your peers, You’ve enjoyed the good company members provide, So it’s not very fair if you duck and you hide, And refuse to contribute, and so let the club slide, So I make a suggestion that we form and we ask, For a management group who will delegate every task, To a member each month and so share the load, So we all steer the club down an alternate road, And I hear someone say “would that really work?”

If we can’t form a committee, we must find a lurk, For we can’t let the club just wither away, And have nowhere to go every second Wednesday.

Such a method may give the club some real space, For in time every member would surely embrace A duty or task or some other case, And so we ensure that this club stays in place.

Syndal Warrnambool outing IN LATE February, a group of 18 from Syndal Combined Probus Club used their free V-Line tickets for a few days of sightseeing, fun and friendship in and around Warrnambool courtesy of Bob Scarborough of Southwest Tours.

The first day included visits to Flagstaff Hill and the Maritime Village, followed by a tour around places of interest in the Warrnambool area including Cannon Hill, the Botanical Gardens, and Hopkins Falls.

Dinner and the Light and Sound show at the Maritime Village rounded out the day.

The second day was very busy with a visit to the Whale Watching Platform (whales not in season), then onto Port

The final touring day included a visit to Fletcher Jones Garden and Market before continuing on to Port Fairy for a walk to the lighthouse before lunch, and a stroll around town.

20th birthday for Monash Probus ON 3 March, 120 members of the Monash Combined Probus Club celebrated their 20th birthday following the general and annual general meetings.

Val Noble, the outgoing president invested the new president Alan Cawsey with the collar of office.

Alan then addressed the members and spoke about his early life and his working history in geology and immigration.

The Mayor of Monash, Rebecca Paterson then spoke briefly to the group and cut the cake made and iced by members of our Probus club.

Following the official duties the club members then enjoyed a boxed lunch made

by Waverley Industries.

The club still has 41 Foundation Members and 38 of those members were present at the meeting and were presented with a small printed badge as a souvenir.

Heathmont ladies turn 27 HEATHMONT Ladies Probus celebrated their 27th birthday in February this year.

After our short general meeting we enjoyed a delightful afternoon tea as we chatted together, making welcome our newest members.

The birthday cake was cut by our incoming president Margaret Martine and our retiring president, Margaret Allen.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Jill Koolmees, who told us of the position of women in Saudi Arabia.

A further birthday celebration was held at Buccatinies Restaurant on 22 February.

Sylvia, our outings person, has organised a day trip to Castlemaine, including a steam train to Maldon.

Future outings include a guided tour of

the Chinese Museum, a tour of Chinatown followed by yum cha, then a matinee at The Princess to enjoy The Book of Mormon.

A new interest group commenced in March, for those ladies interested in gardening. Active walkers, mahjong, dine and discussion, IT development and quilting are a few of the groups in our friendly, welcoming club.

IT MAY be a bridge too far to say that the many bridges along the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail are a key feature of the trail experience.

Opened in 2011, the 90-metre long, architecturally designed steel bridge incorporates elements of previous railway bridges and reflects its role as a gateway to the Yarra Valley and the rail trail.

Importantly, it not only looks spectacular, it makes for a safe crossing of the busy highway.

The next bridge is close by, but technically, it’s only a bridge if you are driving over the trail on Hereford Road in Mount Evelyn. For trail users, it’s actually a tunnel!

Lined with corrugated iron in the style of the war-time Nissan huts, it’s popular with kids who find it hard to resist turning around to ride through it time and again.

Just be careful not to tire the little tackers out too early!

You’ll cross several bridges between Mount Evelyn and Seville before you get to the Woori Yallock Viaduct which stretches across the Woori Yallock Creek and the low-lying swamp that is a haven for birdlife.

DURING February, the Probus Club of Donvale Hill enjoyed their annual outdoor trip to Lorne.

Recent heavy rainfall made for lovely walks through the forests and fern gullies each day. Each walk was always followed up by a nice cup of coffee at one of Lorne’s many excellent cafes.

Traditionally on the Monday evening, a dinner is held in the heritage Settlers Hut in the Queens Park, where the caravaners spend

the week.

Lamb cooked in air fryers accompanied by delicious salads and desserts was served up after the fun and laughter during nibbles on the terrace overlooking the ocean.

Each year there is a theme - this year it was Mexican with many colourful ponchos and sombreros to be seen.

Members are already looking forward to next year’s trip.

Pakenham holds AGM ON Friday 3 March, the Probus Club of Pakenham held its annual general meeting.

Ken Rook from Pakenham Rotary took the elections of the new committee.

Members were delighted to welcome new member Cornelia (Lia) Van Diemen into the club.

After the meeting members enjoyed a two-course lunch at the Pakenham Bowls Club.

With so many activities each

month, a new caravan and cabin group was formed.

A small group of eight has booked, and the number will grow.

The first outing is to Marong, 15 kilometres from Bendigo, Sunday 7 May to Sunday 14th.

At a meeting held on Thursday, 9 April at the home of Merle and Neil Speedie many outings and events were discussed and planned to make the seven days eventful and fun.

The good thing about this venue is it has a meeting hall, so this is where the club will meet for discussions, outings, meals and ideas.

A pancake meal is being organised, as is a best soup competition.

news feature Murderous inmates, executions and daring escapes are all part of the 138-year-old historic tapestry of Geelong Gaol.

Star News Group reporter LUKE VOOGT and local historian Deb Robinson take a look the prison’s dark past.

TODAY’S prisons are luxurious compared to Geelong Gaol, says local historian Deb Robinson.

“Even when the gaol closed in 1991 and they went to Barwon Prison, it would have been like going to a five-star resort,” she says.

When the gaol opened in 1853, Geelong was a fraction of its size today and Victoria had declared independence from NSW just two years before.

Local prisoners rotted in four small huts in South Geelong or in hulks on Corio Bay. NSW Clerk of Works Henry Ginn designed the gaol with 101 cells based on the Pentonville system, to keep prisoners in solitary confinement.

On the rare occasions, guards let

them out, they would wear “silence masks”: white hoods with the eyes cut out. The ghostly masks prevented the inmates from talking and learning who they were locked up with.

“You would lose your identity,” Deb says. “It sent a lot of them quite insane.”

John Gunn and John Roberts were the first Geelong prisoners executed at Gallows Flats, about 200 metres from the gaol, as 2000 people watched in 1854.

Gunn was convicted of stabbing a man in Warrnambool, while Roberts poured arsenic into a fellow servant’s cup.

“Laws at the time required executions to be public, as a deterrent,” Deb says.

Geelong Gaol’s 138-year-old history is shrouded in darkness.

“In the newspaper of the day, there was a lot of outrage from the community.”

The school closed in 1873 after a Royal Commission in 1872 and amalgamated with a nearby industrial school.

Geelong Gaol became a hospital prison in 1877, housing some of the state’s craziest and craftiest old criminals.

In 1889 elderly inmates Christopher Farrell and Josh Clark escaped using a skeleton key and were on the run for two weeks before police caught them in Ballarat.

Henry Cutmore, the “Fire King”, was imprisoned for 12 months in May 1901

for begging and disorderly conduct.

“If you used to piss him off he would set fire to your haystack,” Deb says.

In November 1901, he jumped 6.7m from the top level and bounced off a crossbeam - leaving a dent which remains today. He died shortly after.

Local newspapers called the gaol the “Prison of the Ill”, while inmates dubbed it the “Seaside Resort”.

“Any prisoners in the state who were old, sick, debilitated or about to die they would be sent to Geelong,” Deb says.

“We had a higher death rate than any prison in Victoria: one in 20 prisoners would die in the gaol.”

In the 1920s, the gaol was home to some of Squizzy Taylor’s most violent

“Bourke Street Rats”.

Bank robber Angus Murray escaped the gaol in 1923, possibly with the help of the Rats, but would later hang in Melbourne Gaol.

Geelong “Street Rat” Percy Ramage tried to throw a warden off the third level of the gaol.

The short-tempered Ramage was in for larceny and assault, and served time in prisons and lunatic asylums across the state due to his violent outbursts.

When the gaol closed in 1991, it was Victoria’s oldest continuously running prison, and it remains an important chapter in the state’s history, Deb says.

“It’s great reminder of how brutal the early system was.”

When the laws changed, James Ross was the first to be executed behind the walls for the murder of Elizabeth Sayer, on 22 April 1856.

“Although, up to 70 witnesses were allowed in to ensure justice was done,” Deb says.

Authorities would execute four more men, ending with the execution of Thomas Menard or “Yankee Tom” in 1865. His remains still lie buried at the gaol.

Three wings of the gaol became a school in the 1860s, where “Matron Inch” taught 183 “street” girls, aged three to 16, sowing, cooking and cleaning.

Kiwi cruising days THIRTY members of the Combined Probus Club of Berwick enjoyed a cruise around New Zealand in January.

The seas were kind and the members enjoyed a variety of first class shows and excellent food.

A real day at the beach A perfect evening was enjoyed by 11 members of the Probus Club of Red Hill on 22 February as they picnicked on the sand dunes then strolled along the Merricks Beach at low tide.

“It is a sign of member enthusiasm that despite the hot day, 11 of us packed a light tea and traipsed across the sand to share a meal of fun, friendship and

fellowship together,” commented leaders of the Walking Activity Group, Maree Jeavons and Gwen Fletcher.

After eating, the energetic strolled along the beach as the sun lowered in the west, while others chose to sit and chat, while taking in the serenity watching puppies frolic and fisherfolk cast their lines.

“This is the first outing that we have personally organised, although an annual beach picnic and walk is part of a club tradition.

The response encourages us to organise more walks combined with opportunities to socialise,” Maree said.

As the year progresses, the pair plan to combine walks with cafe stops.

Soaring to cable car views THE new Arthurs Seat Eagle Cable Car on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula has given Victoria an instant tourism success which is attracting up to 3000 visitors a day.

Opened in early December last year, visitation has already reached over 130,000, with visitors from all around the world enjoying their journey on this state-of-the-art gondola ride.

The $20 million development, which has created 70 new Mornington Peninsula jobs, is attracting a cross section of Melbourne day trippers and interstate and international tourists attracted by the prospect of a thrilling, soaring view out across Port Phillip Bay. The spate of Probus visits was an unexpected trend.

CEO, Hans Brugman said, “Feedback from passengers has been great and people familiar with the old chairlift are delighted they can enjoy the same jaw-dropping views but from the smoother and quieter comfort of a modern, enclosed gondola,” he said.

The Eagle offers visitors 15-minute one-way rides or 30-minute return rides in contemporary, Swiss-made, eight-seat gondolas up and down the 314-metre peak.

Steaming along with plenty on our plate THE Probus Club of Blackburn South’s first outing for 2017 was a ‘Steam and Cuisine’ luncheon on board Puffing Billy, which travels from Belgrave to Lakeside in Emerald.

The train was so long, 10 open carriages plus four dining cars and a Guards Van, that the usual “NA” steam engines were replaced for this trip with “G42”, which is a BayerPeacock Garret Steam Engine, built in 1926.

The Garret engines have two sets of driving wheels which allows for the use of longer trains.

The group of 37 members occupied two of the dining cars and were served with “Natter Platters” on the forward journey, which consisted of a selection of various types of meat/cheese, with assorted condiments. On the return trip, we were given scones, jam and cream plus either tea or coffee.

On arrival at Lakeside, there is sufficient time to walk around the lake, or explore the miniature train layout which is adjacent to the station.

As it was a warm sunny day, the outing was a great success, and thoroughly enjoyed by all in the group.

Fatty liver can be silent killer Healthy Ageing

An apple a day could keep the fatty liver away.

Dr Lorraine Baker DURING my many years as a GP, I have noticed a steady rise in what we call “lifestyle diseases”.

This is due to a shift for many people as they become older and adopt less active lifestyles, accompanied by an increased reliance on “convenience” food and drink that is high in fats and refined sugars.

All this increases the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes (diabetes occurring later in life and controllable in most cases with diet, tablet medications, weight loss and exercise) and heart attack.

Most people are aware of these diseases, but much less well understood is the condition “fatty liver” and non-alcoholic steatotic hepatitis (NASH), where excess fat in the liver causes tissue damage and changes in the organ that can ultimately lead to cirrhosis (an illness where the liver is unable to perform its vital functions).

This is a silent condition for many people, found coincidentally during investigation for another illness, when the GP will see abnormalities of liver function

in a blood test which fits with a pattern of liver damage. Or it could be discovered when an ultrasound has been ordered to investigate a problem with the abdomen and the characteristic appearance shows on an ultrasound image of the liver.

Provided other conditions are ruled out - including gall bladder disease, hepatitis caused by viruses, and alcoholic liver disease - blood tests and an ultrasound examination will be sufficient for a GP to be confident

that the likely cause is NASH. It is very common for NASH to occur in patients who already have hypertension, diabetes or are significantly overweight, so it would be rare to refer such a patient immediately to a specialist to discuss having a diagnostic biopsy. Liver biopsies are a highly specialised procedure with a risk of severe bleeding so are reserved for patients with very severe liver disease or abnormal function, with no other likely cause.

How do we treat NASH? In the first instance, it comes down to that usual discussion around changing eating and exercise habits. Refined carbohydrates like white flour based foods, and refined sugary foods and drinks are as big a culprit as high saturated fat intake - so beware of the foods labelled “low fat” which have a high sugar content or kilojoule count per 100 grams (read the very fine print on food labels to be sure).

Exercise (and lots of it) will help but listen to advice from your GP about what is the best form for you, taking into account your past health issues and your preferences.

For patients who also consume alcohol on a regular basis relative abstinence is ideal. Avoiding excessive drinking is very important as with a damaged liver the processing of alcohol can be impaired - which increases the risk of yet more injury to the organ.

Can NASH be reversed?

I have experience now with several very well motivated patients who committed to changing eating habits - and taking on daily commitment to exercise - who have reversed the effects and now have normal liver function. Others have had improved function, but if no improvement occurs, that is when a GP will refer to a specialist for further assessment of possible rare causes of liver damage and discussion about other forms of treatment to halt the problem.

So if you have been told you have some minor abnormalities of your liver function, don’t ignore the issue. Keep in touch with your GP to follow it up and he or she can support you in understanding the risks and helping you to a healthier lifestyle.

Bamboozle down centuries Retired journalist Laurie Barber has agreed to share his MY WORD column with The Probian. He has been analysing linguistics as a hobby for over two decades and the column is syndicated in newspapers and journals across Australia.

A few years ago a film was made called Bamboozled.

I didn’t see it and I don’t think it was much of a film (please don’t write in and tell me you enjoyed it) but it had a huge cast of leading characters. In some countries, it was called It’s Showtime. It was also called The Very Black Show in France.

The word bamboozle was from my younger days, and I always thought it was a cant word (in other words, a word you don’t want to know.)You would be surprised at the words that I always believed were made up until I later discovered they were in the dictionaries. By the time I discovered that it was too late to use them.

(Somebody mentioned dictionaries and asked me if all dictionaries used the same definitions,l They don’t, but many people believe they should.)

Bamboozle goes back at least 300 years. The first use in print that I could discover was in 1703, when dramatist Colly Cibber said sham proofs were intended to bamboozle him.

You probably have used bamboozle yourself.

upon. Then it says to mystify or deceive. It says the word is of cant origin. Heinemann says basically the same thing. It gives an example: “I was completely bamboozled by the time he finished explaining it to me”.

Collins says it is an informal word that is intended to gain some advantage. It gives an example: “The sermons were intended to bamboozle the workers into obedience”.

Webster says the origins are uncertain but the meaning is intended to hoax. Then we come to Samuel Johnson, whose first real dictionary was thrust upon the public in 1755.

He says bamboozle was a cant word not used in grave writings.

But it still meant to deceive or confound. A bamboozler was a cheat.

(I came across a word from Kate Burridge. A bootylicious woman was a woman with an attractive rear. It has nothing to do with bamboozle, but I just had

to mention it. I have never used it.) Kate Burridge in her book does say bamboozle is highly respectable today.

John Ayto says bamboozle is a mystery word that first appeared in print in 1703.

My big dictionary says it was mentioned in the Tatler in the context of ”the continued corruption of the English tongue”.

The word bamboozle has given us some other words, Such as bamboozled, bamboozler, bamboozlement and bamboozling, It gives an example of bamboozling with the comment “all the good language was lost upon him”.

But you can also get bamboozler jelly beans or bamboozler friends.

Of course, if you do not know the answer to a question, you can always try to bamboozle the questioner. I have tried that a few times. Sometimes it works; mostly it doesn’t.

Exploring the

Apple Isle

FIFTEEN members from Glen Waverley Ladies, Syndal Ladies, Pinewood and East Bentleigh Probus clubs rose early to board a bus to the airport; destination Launceston.

Upon arrival they were met by coach driver and guide for the holiday - Ted. The trip started with a visit to Woolmer’s Estate and Rose Garden where they had lunch.

The group then travelled to Cataract Gorge and cruised to Kings Wharf viewing the historic vessels; then into the Gorge viewing the breathtaking sheer cliffs and cascades. It was then time to check into accommodation for the next four nights at Grindelwald.

Next day involved travelling along the Tamar Valley and visiting Platypus House and Seahorse World, then on to Beaconsfield (the site of the escape by Todd and Brant) where the group wandered through the Mine and Heritage Centre.

The next stop was at Tamar Ridge Cellar Door for a personal wine tasting accompanied by cheese platters.

The following morning was spent in the historic town of Ross for a great village tour which included the Tasmanian Wool Centre. Most lunched on scallop pies (yum). In the afternoon they visited Clarendon House and garden before returning to Grindelwald.

Cataract Gorge Reserve was the first stop on the next day.

The ride on the world’s longest single span chairlift provided a wonderful view of the surrounding area. After lunch the touring party had a cooking lesson, a tasting, a barbecue and Devonshire tea at the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company. A guided tour of the gardens followed. Yes, they did eat dinner in the evening!

On day five they headed for Cradle Mountain. It was four degrees and sleeting. However,

the group had a great tour of Dove Lake and lunched on the Mountain, before travelling to Stanley.

It was too cold and windy to take the chairlift at the Nut but they were able to have a good look around Stanley, which included a visit to Highfield House.

Accommodation for the next two nights was at Stanley Seaview Inn. A cruise up the Arthur River started the next day and a very interesting walk through beautiful Tarkine rainforest. This was followed by a tasty barbecue lunch, complete with ‘chateau cardboard’ at Turks Landing.

After this the group travelled to the Edge of the World. What an experience this was. The winds come over the ocean from South America and are freezing and powerful.

On the last day the party visited the Emu Valley

Rhododendron Garden after which they went to Hellyers Road Distillery and experienced a behind the scenes tour of the distillery including tastings. After lunch at the distillery it was off to Launceston Airport, visiting House of Anvers chocolate factory and Ashgrove Cheese factory on the way.

What a well organised trip which was jam-packed with very interesting sites to visit as well as the history lessons that accompanied each location.

They all had a fabulous time and will talk about it for quite some time. There was a great deal of laughter. The coach driver was excellent, joined in the fun, and made the trip memorable.

STUDFIELD-WANTIRNA MEMBERS of the Studfield-Wantirna Combined Probus Club enjoyed a week on the Murray River, exploring the towns of Echuca and Moama.

It provided a great opportunity to socialise and get to know each other.

Thanks were extended to Margaret Comport, who organised the trip, and the ladies who assisted with the catering.

Further extended stays are expected to follow in future years.

PAKENHAM BETWEEN 20-25 March, a group of 25 members of the Probus Club of Pakenham and two guests enjoyed their most recent annual tour, which was to Merimbula.

The amazing places visited included Millers Oyster Farm, the Village of Tilba Tilba, the Whaling Museum, the Old Car Club at Pambula (a very successful venture), and Oaklands - just a bit different.

Most also enjoyed a morning walk to the pier and beyond.

The trip on the Cat Balou around Twofold Bay was very popular, the highlight being the number of dolphins welcoming members as playmates, and included a very good commentary, a light afternoon tea and a blow wave that needed to be
