The proponents of a Highton drug clinic have slammed council administrators for denying help to those most in need.

The administrators “bent” to a “micro-community” of residents opposing the project only because “it was in their backyard”, said Habitat Therapeutics’ Warren Holland.

“Most of the objectors agreed that the community needs a rehab facility,” he said. “But they weren’t willing to support that initiative in their own community.”

The three administrators voted on Tuesday night “not to endorse” Habitat Therapeutics’ plan for a 12-bed rehabilitation centre.

Shire hikes charge, loans as expenses grow faster The draft budget, released on Wednesday, plans a 4 per cent increase in the waste services charge.

The increase would help pay to “improve the management of waste and recycling, including landfill rehabilitation works”, the shire said.

Total borrowings would rise from $15 million to $17.3 million, mostly to fund a new community centre at Torquay.

Staff costs will hit $29.1 million, up $1.8 million on the year before and accounting for 42 per cent of total expenses.

The budget allowed for the seven per cent increase in employee costs while also noting that the consumer price index (CPI) measure of inflation was forecast for 2 per cent.

The draft budget allocated $16.8 million

for new capital works, $4.3 million less in 2016/2017.

However, a $15 million backlog of incomplete projects put the total allocation for 2017/2018 at $31.6 million.

The shire budgeted for a $5.5 million decrease in capital grants from state and federal governments, but noted that “a number” of applications for funding were under consideration.

The shire’s underlying result was forecast to remain in the black, with a surplus of $426,000 compared to $2.9 million in 2016/2017.

The draft budget showed that council continued “to take a proactive lead on environmental and social issues”, the shire said.

Highton father Elie Freijah owes his life to Royal Children’s Hospital, a debt he’s continued repaying ever since its doctors saved him.

“That’s why I do what I do,” said the Good Friday Appeal’s Geelong area manager.

“If not for them I wouldn’t be here and my kids wouldn’t be here.”

Elie was four and living in Horsham when doctors diagnosed him with a kidney tumour, which had spread to his lungs and liver.

“They said to mum and dad, ‘Get in the car and go straight to the Royal Children’s - you have to leave now’,” Elie remembered.

“They basically gave me a 30 per cent chance.

I was diagnosed and under the knife 48 hours.”

Doctors removed the tumour at Christmas 1980, but Elie would spend most of the next 12 years “on a drip” and “violently vomiting” after chemotherapy.

He remembered seeing New Year’s fireworks reflecting off the walls of his hospital room soon after the operation.

“Dad was trying to lift me up, so I could see them but I was just in too much pain.”

Hospital life soon became the norm for Elie.

“It was all I knew, but I always had questions, like, ‘Why can’t I play with the other kids?’.”

At six, Elie took to the streets with his parents to begin raising money for the appeal.

“Dad got us involved doing tin-shaking at intersections.”

Elie finally went into remission at 16.

Now appeal area manager for a decade, he was busy organising the city’s efforts again this week before Good Friday.

“The week before is a nightmare,” he said. “If I had hair, I’d tear it out.”

Elie hoped Geelong could this year beat its 2014 record of $555,555.

Surf Coast’s council wants to increase its wasteservice charge and borrowings as expenses grow faster than revenue next financial year, according to the shire’s draft budget.

The document also forecasts staff costs to grow at more than three times the rate of inflation as the shire manages a two per cent cap on rate rises.

Total income will rise $600,000 compared to a $4.4 million increase in expenses, the draft budget predicts.

Mayor Brian McKiterick said council’s “measured and responsible” budgeting set “a strong foundation for our future”.

“It also demonstrates our commitment to understanding the needs of our community and meeting their short-term and long-term expectations.”

Dorks who think it’s a hoot to shine laser pointers at aircraft might like to reconsider their brainless pastime after events in Geelong last week.

Apparently one of their mouth-breathing brethren took aim at a helicopter - except it wasn’t just any helicopter.

It was in fact a Victoria Police Air Wing helicopter armed with a “forward-looking infrared surveillance system”, which, as Double Take readers would know, is ideal for pinpointing terrestrial laser losers.

According to police, the pilot “was able to direct police members on the ground to the address where the laser was coming from and the exact location in the rear yard where the offender hid the laser”.

“The male was arrested and charged with interfering with an aircraft and possessing a prohibited weapon,” police said.

And hopefully someone told him where to ‘hide’ his laser in future!

While on technology, punters might have wondered about a humming sound over Corio’s Beckley Park on Wednesday night.

Well, it wasn’t coming from a Victoria Police Air Wing helicopter with forward-looking infrared doo-dah.

It would have been the sound of a drone - operated by the integrity department of Harness Racing Victoria (HRV).

Yes, the use of those increasingly ubiquitous mechanical mozzies has now extended to keeping tabs on trainers at the trots.

HRV foreshadowed the high-tech crackdown on Monday, warning ahead of Wednesday’s meet that it had secured Civil Aviation Safety Authority approval to deploy drones for monitoring “raceday administration and treatment” of gallopers.

$190K fines for Geelong strikes

By Luke Voogt The CFMEU and its officials copped $190,800 in fines for an unlawful industrial action at three Geelong projects following a Federal Court ruling.

Justice Christopher Jessup fined the union following stop-work actions at Geelong hospital, St John of God Hospital and Geelong Library during April and May 2014.

The court found there were no issues or grievances “that justified … the organisation of the industrial action”.

Justice Jessup found the “arrogant” approach of the CFMEU and its officials “had the explicit object of inflicting commercial harm on (the contractor)”.

The court fined the union $44,800 relating to a $115m Geelong Hospital development, $102,400 for a $49m St John of God Hospital development and

Justice Jessup imposed $590,800 in fines for nine projects in Victoria in the ruling – $490,000 for the CFMEU and $100,800 for 10 of its officials.

Australian Building and Construction Commission Commissioner Nigel Hadgkiss welcomed the decision Tuesday.

“These are substantial penalties for unlawful industrial action which stopped work on key public projects worth nearly half a billion dollars,” Mr Hadgkiss said.

“Today’s decision shows that the CFMEU cannot ignore its obligations under Australia’s workplace laws. The ABCC will continue to work towards ensuring all in the industry, whether workers, unions, or employers, comply with the law. Flagrant disregard for workplace laws cannot be tolerated.”

The CFMEU was unavailable for comment.

Almost 400 calls for help forced local SES units to seek back-up from Melbourne after strong wind and heavy rain lashed the region earlier this week.

Five crews from Melbourne helped the local units deal with 374 call-outs across the Geelong region, said SES Barwon south-west operations manager Micah Spedding.

Ocean Grove was particularly hard-hit with 85 calls for help out of 183 across the Bellarine Peninsula, he said.

“It was the second time the Bellarine had been hit by a storm in a few weeks, so some of them are still recovering.”

Rising waters in the wake of the storm on Sunday night and Monday morning prompted the SES to warn motorists against entering flooded areas.

SES crews performed rescues in six call-outs related to flooding, Mr Spedding said.

“Don’t enter it, don’t play in it, don’t drive in it - the risk’s too high.”

Crews attended two flooding call-outs each at Ocean Grove, Marcus Hill and South Geelong, one of which involved an elderly couple, Mr Spedding said.

“The problem with floodwater you can’t see underneath it and you can’t see if the road’s been washed away.

“Once you’re in the water it’s hard to open the doors because of the pressure and you become trapped.”

A woman and young girl rolled their 4WD after hitting floodwater on Murradoc Road, Drysdale, just before 6am Monday.

Paramedics took them to hospital in a stable condition for observation.

Winds at speeds faster than 80km/h battered the coast.

Mr Speeding saw power “poles snapped in half ” as he drove back from Camperdown.

“There were crews there just scratching their heads - that’s how strong the winds were.”

Geelong Racecourse recorded 53.6mm of rain in 24 hours until 9am Monday.

SES crews also evacuated occupants of two houses at Ocean Grove.

Ocean Grove and Drysdale recorded some of the highest rain totals during the storm, with figures of 90mm-plus.

Blocked drained led to minor flooding of some residential properties in both towns.

Teens charged after police pursuit Police have charged two teenagers with numerous offences after a car chase in Geelong.

A 19-year-old man was charged with crimes ranging from carjacking to recklessly endangering life, while a 15-year-old girl will face court on multiple car-theft charges.

Police began hunting the pair after receiving a call of a suspicious blue Holden sedan in Swanston Street at 8.15am Saturday.

Cops ‘pop up’ over Easter

By Luke Voogt Highway Patrol officers will target drug and drink drivers in and around Geelong over the Easter long weekend, the region’s top cop has warned.

“Expect us to pop up anywhere,” Superintendent Craig Gillard said.

“We’ve had a couple of fatal and serious-injury accidents in the region recently, so we’re trying to have a higher visibility.”

Supt Gillard said he had rostered extra units for the weekend to target “areas of high visitation”, like the Surf Coast.

“Drug driving is something we’ve been finding more unfortunately.”

Supt Gillard said police would target major and arterial roads as part of the state-wide Operation Nexus and urged drivers to plan ahead.

“We appeal to people to use common sense, be patient and courteous and - number one - don’t take any risks. Let’s not have it end in tragedy.”

Meanwhile, TAC and SES launched their Driver Reviver campaign this week.

SES will run 45 roadside Driver Revivers across Victoria between today (Thursday) and Monday 17 April, offering hot drinks and snacks to encourage drivers to stop and refresh.

According to TAC statistics, drowsy driving is a factor in one in 10 road deaths.

Easter is a particularly dangerous time with thousands of Victorians driving to destinations around the state, often travelling long distances, a TAC spokesperson said.

TAC will also run “Pit Stops” at six of Victoria’s busiest rest stops, with free barista coffees, sausage sizzles, prizes and family activities.

Over the past five years, 16 people have died on the state’s roads over the Easter period and 450 have been seriously injured.

Victorian Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan urged motorists to plan ahead.

“There are choices we can all make every time we use the roads, like slowing down, ensuring you’ve had enough sleep and avoiding distractions,” he said.

“These choices can be the difference between life and death.”

One killed, many injured in bus roll

Police are yet to question the driver of a bus which crashed on the Great Ocean Road, killing a 38-yearold Taiwanese man Monday afternoon.

The man died at the scene and while a woman in her 30s was trapped beneath the bus before being freed.

Paramedics treated her for pelvis injuries and an air ambulance helicopter flew her to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver, a dual Australian-Taiwanese citizen spent the night in custody at Apollo Bay Hospital, said Senior Sergeant Mark Patrick. But police were unable to question the permanent Australian resident due to a language barrier, he said.

They released the 49-year-old pending further questioning with a translator.

Snr Sgt Patrick said the bus, towing a trailer and carrying 30 people, was travelling west when it left the road and rolled near Apollo Bay just after 5pm.

“We don’t believe there is any excessive speed to blame. He was going downhill and it appears that he’s lost control, tried to correct it and (the bus) rolled. They had been to a conference in Melbourne and were on a site-seeing tour on the Great Ocean Road. They were going to view the sunset at the 12 Apostles. They’ve come from far and wide then they’ve become involved in this - it’s tragic.”

Police concluded examining the crash site earlier this week.

Paramedics took the remaining 27 passengers to Apollo Bay Hospital and later transferred six to Geelong Hospital, all in a stable condition.

Snr Sgt Patrick warned motorists to take care on the Great Ocean Road.

“There are treacherous parts along the road because people don’t change their driving (behaviours),” he said.

Police urged witnesses or anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The crash brings the Victorian road toll to 68, compared to 80 the same time last year.

Engagement is a key step in strengthening partnerships within the community, and with local government, to develop a unified long-term strategic plan for our region.

The State Government has accused Opposition Leader Matthew Guy of scare-campaigning following his threats to sack a coastal management board.

Mr Guy vowed, if elected in 2018, to sack Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) over its plans to take over Anglesea Beachfront Family Caravan Park.

But a spokesperson for Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio labelled Mr Guy a hypocrite.

“It’s baffling that Matthew Guy is now running a scare campaign against the very tender process the Liberals put in place.”

GORCC put the lease for the caravan park up for competitive tender in December 2014 due to its financial value.

The Morris family bidded to extend their lease of the caravan park from the State Government, which they had managed since 1996.

But GORCC knocked back the tender and will take over management on behalf the government when the family’s lease runs out on 1 December, 2017.

Mr Guy described the committee’s plans to take over the caravan park as ludicrous.

“Does anyone honestly think they’ll run that business better than a family that has done it for 20 years?” he asked.

“They’ll just run that business into the ground and business again will be left to clean up damage that a government entity has caused.”

Mr Guy visited the caravan park on Monday, where he made the vow and committed to reopening the tender process.

He said GORCC had treated the Morris family “like rubbish and deceived them for a long period of time.”

GORCC chief executive officer Richard Davies said the committee had acted “transparently“ to “protect public land and ensure it benefits all Victorians”.

“Ninety-five per cent of campsites are booked for the 2017-18 ... and a substantial number of forward bookings. Over $1million of bookings have already been processed.“ The State Government recently commissioned a review which found the tender met regulatory guidelines.

Letters 'Proviso’ proves jury’s stance Geelong’s council was dismissed by the Victorian Government. The newDemocracy Foundation, an independent, non-partisan research organisation, oversaw Geelong’s Citizen Jury on the question of how we want to be democratically represented by a future council.

Opposition local government spokesperson David Davis stated in parliament on 21 March that the jury was “led by the nose to predetermined outcomes”.

One-hundred jurors were randomly selected from 15,000 addresses, representing census data for gender, age and geography. I was accepted. Ordinary citizens brought common sense, skills and knowledge. We were informed by local, national and international bodies. Criminal juries seek truth. We sought solutions for best governance.

Mr Davis said “there was a fix to make sure that [they] came back with a recommendation against a directly elected mayor”.

It was a close vote. The tipping point was that councillors would most likely work productively together if they elected the mayor from among themselves. If there was a “fix” why did we include a proviso for a directly elected mayor? All visitors were welcome to attend. We were not “led” by anyone.

Mr Davis could have seen for himself if he had cared enough about Geelong to have attended for even an hour.

Councillors gone, problem remains Forty years ago a chap I knew came up with the idea of starting a wine bar in Geelong. But it never got off the ground due to council obstruction, with the usual excuses related to parking and whatever else could be found to scuttle a business.

The same also happened to the hugely successful Culloden Castle restaurant, if I remember rightly.

It seemed at the time that council was adamant that if anyone in Geelong wanted to make a buck it was going to be the council and its cronies.

Now we find that five council officers are being sued by a local developer.

The alleged obstruction appears similar to that experienced by Corio Bay’s barge-mounted fish and chip shop, which needed seven years and a couple million dollars to get going.

I know of so many people sent to the wall or their business operations seriously compromised via the planning department’s bad treatment.

At the first Future Geelong session I pointed out that, yes, councilllors were sacked but that the administration remained and was the real problem.

What have the administrators done in regard to this? A new arrangement for governance in this city is urgently needed, especially given the damage council has already done.

making few decisions about anything of real relevance to helping City of Greater Geelong. Two don’t live here, either.

It seems the previous two mayors were instrumental in helping create what ratepayers have inherited: huge and increasing debt, much of it from lining the pockets of high-flying consultants.

Knowing one ex-mayor personally as a nice bloke but learning about the other from self-testimonials encourages me to ask: does anyone else feel that their frequent pontifications about fixing City of Greater Geelong have reached a state of ad nauseam?

They are part of the problem. We’re where we are due to State Government granting our publicly elected mayor wish.

Greater Geelong ratepayers got what we wished for, ignoring the axiom ‘Be careful what you wish for’. Please, ex-mayors, give us a break - we’ve heard it all before!

During the relay there was laughter, tears and a few sore feet, but the strength of participants was a public display of support for anyone in Geelong with a cancer experience.

Geelong relayers have so far over $100,500, which will help fund Cancer Council Victoria’s support, prevention and research programs.

Again, thanks to everyone who relayed and helped continue the fight against cancer.

Violence inquiry’s gender bias Amazingly, Sarah Henderson has been chosen to chair a parliamentary committee tackling family violence law reform. Her speech to the Australian Parliament on 29 March shows this will be another gender-biased conversation.

Not once did she mention statistics on male victims of family violence, even though one male is killed due to family violence in Australia every 10 days. Not once did she mention that one in seven men would be subjected to family violence, but she referred to one in four women suffering family violence.

Her data came from Domestic Violence Resource Centre of Victoria. If the inquiry is to be true to the issue of family violence, it requires unbiased data, not cherry-picked analysis.

Ms Henderson also mentioned funding announced by the Turnbull Government under its Women’s Safety Plan, which she informed me was “gender-neutral”. How can a Women’s Safety Plan be gender-neutral if the main criteria are genderbased?

This appears to be another feeble attempt by a governing body to tackle this societal issue without addressing all the factual data.

It will be a waste of taxpayer funds because the committee will have a pre-determined set of outcomes.

Country sound comes to the city

By Luke Voogt Country music star Adam Brand will return to the “old stomping ground” when he performs in Geelong next Friday.

“I love coming back to Geelong,” he told The Indy this week.

Brand has been touring since early March with his “upbeat” album Get on Your Feet, which he released in February.

“It’s definitely country music to get up and dance to,” he said.

“Some people like their country music to sit at the bar and cry into their beer - I want you to be dancing on the bar and having a great time.”

Brand grew up in Wallington and Corio after his parents moved to Geelong from Perth when he was six years old.

He listened to his parents’ Elvis, Roy Orbison and Neil Diamond records as a child, and Bruce Springsteen and Cold Chisel as a teenager.

“Music was always something I absolutely loved,” he said.

“I grew up learning to play drums and performing in church bands.”

Brand put music on hold when he left high school and it was only in his late 20s that he rediscovered the passion.

He completed an apprenticeship as a dental technician and travelled Australia for roughly a decade doing odd jobs, from a brickie’s labourer to selling cars.

“But music was always just nagging at the back of my mind,” he said.

In 1997 Brand decided to pack it all up, go to Tamworth and “have a crack at it”.

“It just got to the point one day where I said ‘bugger it’ and just went for it.”

The gig scored him a record deal and in 1999 he won the first three of his fourteen Golden Gui-

“I’m coming up to 20 years now since my first album came out and it’s been a dream come true,” he said.

“I just love that I get to make my living on stage. The highlight for me is it’s been 20 years and I’m still doing it.”

But while Brand struggled to name his single best moment, he has an odd honour to his to

name - in 2009 he won Dancing with the Stars.

“I’m retired as a dancer, just so you know,” he said.

“Even though I won I talked my way through it more than danced my way through.”

Brand hoped the crowd would get on their feet at the Gateway Hotel next Friday.

“It’s a great country crowd in Geelong and the

car park is full always of utes. The stage is nice and close and (last time) the place (was) jam-packed.”

He said country music had evolved dramatically during his career and many younger fans were getting into the genre.

“You might be surprised by what kind of night you have.

“It’s certainly not hay bales, banjos and donkeys.”

Lucy in Kylie’s shining shoes

By Luke Voogt Kylie impersonator Lucy Holmes has sung backup for the best in business, but nothing beats Spinning Around as the Princess of Pop. The singer behind100 per cent Kylie has performed with artists like James Morrison, Delta Goodrem and Westlife.

“Getting to back some those artists is a dream for a singer, but its super fun to don all the feathers and be the centre of attention,” she said.

And after 15 years playing Kylie Minogue the Clever Girl reckoned she had mastered the art of balancing feathers on her head while rocking six-inch stilettos.

“You just learn how to move in it all,” she said.

Donning Kylie’s more outlandish outfits from across three decades was Holmes’ favourite part of the show.

“They’re exact replicas of everything she’s worn on tour,” the 37-year-old said.

But she was tight-lipped about which costumes she would be wearing at her next Geelong performance.

“You’d have to come along and see if the gold hot pants make an appearance,” she told The Indy.

Holmes grew up to Kylie’s early hits, but it was the superstar’s later singles like Just Can’t Get You Out of My Head that blew her away.

She began her career with a degree in musical theatre, but 15 years ago she and producer Derek Bailey got the brainwave of

inpersonating Kylie.

“I heard that I looked a lot like her and that I can mimic her voice,” she said.

Holmes would go on to do the Locomotion in “four corners of the globe” performing in nearly 20 countries as Kylie.

“We were just pinching ourselves for the first few trips,” she said. “It went nuts!”

“I don’t think we knew what we were creating when we started.”

Minogue herself even rated the show the best Kylie tribute act in the world, Holmes said.

“She sent a crew to film the show a couple of years ago and she loved it.”

For Holmes performing as Kylie is easy despite the Pop Princess’ distinct voice.

“It’s actually is a lot of fun singing in her voice and even speaking in her voice - it’s a pseudo British-Australian accent,” she said.

“I was born in England, so that was pretty easy for me to do.”

At the moment her favourite song is All The Lovers but every song is “a joy to sing”.

With Minogue abroad, Holmes said Geelong could Come Into (Kylie’s) World through her show.

“Every once in a blue moon she gets out and about. We like to give people the big Kylie shows now that she’s over in London.”

“The wonderful thing about this show is when you stand on stage and look at the audience it’s so multigenerational.”

Holmes will perform at Geelong Performing Arts Centre for the first time on 21 April in a two-hour show.

Belting out the music of Burt Bacharach has been one of Andrew Hondromatidis’ most challenging gigs.

The Melbourne theatre performer joined a group of singers and musicians in March to take the iconic songwriter’s music to regional Victoria .

“A lot of Burt’s music is easy listening but it’s not easy singing,” he said.

“He’ll push you as a vocalist to the high and lowest point of your range all in the one song - it’s a musical workout.”

Hondromatidis said audiences often recognised Bacharach’s iconic songs, if not the man behind them.

By Luke Voogt Kasey Chambers may be one of Australia’s mostacclaimed country performers but for her nothing beats a live crowd.

“There’s nothing I get a personal buzz out of more than being on stage playing songs to people,” she said after returning from touring Tasmania on Tuesday. Not every song goes over but I like being out there on stage and figuring out what work best.”

The multi-ARIA winning singer songwriter will be back in Geelong next Thursday (20 April) as she tours Australia with her new album Dragonfly.

“This is a really full-on touring year for me,” she said. “We go a bit insane doing it but we love it.”

Chambers released Dragonfly on 20 January after recording it with brother Nash and music legend Paul Kelly.

What’sat on

Her favourite song Ain’t No Little Girl “is definitely the song that holds the album together”, she said.

“I wrote the song a few years ago and never played it. It just sat in the cupboard for a long time. “(It’s about) this strong powerful person in there that can override all your weaknesses.”

The album had songs for a louder gig or “an audience that listens”, Chambers said. But she promised to return to the hits that made her a household name when she performs at GPAC. “We always go back to The Captain, Barricades and Brickwalls and Not Pretty Enough.”

Not Pretty Enough helped Chambers burst into the mainstream when it topped the Australian charts in 2003.

“I like how that song has helped young girls get in touch with themselves,” she said.

Family approach For 88-year-old Ralph McVilly and his family, Uniting AgeWell’s home care services are a godsend.

Ralph’s son, Steve McVilly said carers from the organisation not only provided his father assistance around the home and garden, but an invaluable, overall holistic service.

“Dad grew up in state care and is particularly suspicious of strangers,” he said.

Graeme, 56, hopes his son can take over the family owned business when he retires.

“But only if he behaves himself,” he joked.

Graeme is also keen “help the local schools” by with work experience and currently employs a local apprentice.

By Josip Zilic North Geelong Warriors will have plenty of fire in the belly to carry on with after being put to the sword courtesy of a terrible refereeing decision in it’s 2-1 loss to South Melbourne last Sunday.

The Warriors have a home Easter Saturday clash against Oakleigh, who come to Elcho Park after themselves losing 2-1 away to Green Gully.

Oakleigh haven’t had a bright start to 2017 and much like the Warriors are in need of points to gain traction for their campaign.

Talismen Dusan Bosnjak and Dean Piemonte will be the ones to watch out for as Oakleigh’s key to scoring.

Terrible conditions met North Geelong last Sunday at Lakeside, with driving rain and wind that had the corner flags at full reach all evening were a big enough test, let alone the opponent in South Melbourne.

Unfortunately for the Warriors they fell behind early in the 11th minute when Matt Millar was on hand to slide in a cross from the left to slip under Marko Stevanja’s reach.

The Warriors - true to their name - battled and grinded out opportunities after absorbing some of South Melbourne’s switch play through the middle of the park.

In the 38th minute the Warriors got their reward and evened the ledger after Andrew Doig’s long range drive was unable to be absorbed by Zaim Zenelli in goals leading to Ivan Grgic slamming the ball home and making a real contest of the occasion.

For all their endeavour and significant rise in work rate from last week, the Warriors were left confused - as too were most of South Melbourne’s men - when the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty in the 62nd minute.

Despite the ball being won fairly and outside the area, referee Ioannis Zisis - who wasn’t sure himself initially - made a late call and pointed to the spot much to the ire of players and fans alike.

Milos Lujic stepped up to the spot and buried the winner home.

Without a win to their name in 2017, the Warriors are going to need to call in their inner strength more than ever this week in front of their faithful if they want to resurrect their season, never more timely than Easter to do this.

Gummy sharks are biting well ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers managed mixed bags last week before bad weather hit.

Corio Bay was constant for pinkie snapper, flathead and Australian salmon.

Fishing land-based was worthwhile, with the rocks at St Helens Boat Ramp giving up pinkie snapper and flathead.

Anglers who fished off Portarlington during breaks in the weather caught snapper to 6kg along with gummy sharks of similar size.

Baits such as pilchard and fresh squid worked well, with sounding up schools of snapper before dropping anchor also increasing chances.

St Leonards through to Swan Bay hosted improved whiting action on fish of 40cm.

The Bourke St area through to the Swan Bay’s entrance fished well late in the afternoons, with pippie the standout bait when used on running sinker rigs heavy enough to hold bottom.

Gummy sharks were a viable target further out in 20m, again on fresh baits.

Queenscliff also held reasonable numbers of whiting.

The Rip continued producing kingfish for anglers trolling or working knife jigs, with this time of year normally featuring some of the best-quality kings.

Some anglers also reported sighting southern bluefin tuna in The Rip. Gone Fishing Charters guided clients onto some well-conditioned gummies during the week while fishing out of Queenscliff.

Elephant fish were caught around the Barwon River estuary’s Sheepwash area.

Bream to over 40cm were also banked by anglers with live bait.

Slower waters around tide changes have helped anglers increase their catch rates in the estuary, which should be a great option for kids to target small salmon, trevally and mullet during the Easter break.

Surf anglers who found a break in the weather beached salmon to 1.5kg with lures cast from beach or rock platforms.

Freshwater anglers kept focused on Wurdee Boluc Reservoir where redfin were banked with spoon-type lures such as Norries Wasaby. A few large brown trout should be lurking around the lake margins, since it was this time last year when they came on the chew.

The Easter break should present opportunities to fish St Leonards for its big whiting, while The Rip could have anglers in the running for some great kingfish action.

The Barwon estuary is recommended for parents with kids, while freshwater fishos should keep Wurdee Boluc in mind for large trout and redfin.

The Cats will need more than their recent run of good fortune to be premiership contenders, coach Chris Scott has said.

Scott admitted the Cats could easily have lost their last two matches if not for the opposition losing key players and kicking poorly.

“We’re clear that it’s not our brilliance that’s necessarily got us into this position, it’s been a fair bit of good fortune as well.”

“I think it’s the height of arrogance to come in and say ‘we’re going well we’re three and zip’.”

Geelong will face arch enemy Hawthorn in the traditional Easter Monday blockbuster at the MCG. Hawthorn will be out for blood after their disastrous 0-3 start and will attempt to replicate Melbourne’s pressure around the ball, which forced many Geelong errors.

Melbourne dominated Geelong with possession, tackles, time in forward half and scoring shots in the second and third quarters but were unable to convert on the scoreboard.

The Demons finished with six more scoring shots than the Cats, despite losing by 29 points.

“The middle part of the game they were better than us around the ball,” Scott said. “It was nice to be play outplayed and still hang in today.”

“But again, if they kicked straight we wouldn’t be saying that.“ Geelong has dominated the AFL in goal accuracy at 64.7 per cent, well ahead of Adelaide, Port Adelaide and GWS who have kicked at about 55 per cent.

Scott said the team’s preseason goal kicking practice had paid off so far.

“We were bottom four last year. It’s a huge turn around.”

Meanwhile, Essendon great Matthew Lloyd warned Harry Taylor’s move to the forward line could mean an “early end to his career.”

“Geelong have kicked 55 goals for the year. Do you know how many he’s kicked? None." Lloyd told Channel Nine on Sunday.

The star backman admitted his season had been underwhelming so far.

“My influence from a scoreboard point of view has been non-existent,“ Taylor told Fox Footy on Monday night.

“But hopefully some of the things we’re trying to implement are helping the team.”

Scott agreed, saying Taylor was “the quintessential team man” and had taken pressure off Geelong’s forwards.

“What’s best for Harry may well be just to play as a key defender, but it may well be that what’s best for the team is for him to play forward.”

Scott said his presence helped Tom Hawkins and Daniel Menzel kick five and four goals respectively.

Half forward Brandan Parfitt also stood out in just his third match.

The 18-year-old won a Rising Star nomination with 23 touches and five tackles - one of which won him a free kick and subsequent goal.

He told AFL.com.au that joining fellow former-Darwinians Steven Motlop and Nakia Cockatoo had made the move to Geelong easier.
