Noosa is well-known for its many community groups who are always happy to hold a protest, sign a petition or conduct a public meeting.

If you look back, so far we’ve seen Robin Bristow’s booty on Hastings Street, gay pride along Main Beach, a march to prevent violence against women and a march for Indigenous rights that brought traffic to a standstill.

Protests are so often hostile. So it was refreshing that participants at the Protect Elanda protest at Boreen Point of Sunday were encouraged to paint in protest.

The community gathered to be creative in their rebellion against planned development works, and it was a beautiful sight.

A harpist played soothing music, children painted and the community talked.

If only we could all come together in this way more often without the reason of a protest.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and I think we saw a little of that in action on Sunday. ● Jolene Ogle

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… BROILER FARM APPEAL FIZZLES A Cooroy farmer has withdrawn his appeal against council’s decision to refuse his application for a large-scale poultry farm on his family’s land.

The fight for the broiler farm started more than four years ago when David Milligan applied to council to build a broiler farm. When council rejected Mr Milligan’s application, he lodged an appeal with the Planning and Environment Court.

On Friday 7 April, Noosa Council CEO Brett de Chastel confirmed Mr Milligan’s appeal has been withdrawn.

No Broiler Farm Cooroy co-convenor Rod Ritchie was vocal throughout the fight, and said the residents of west Cooroy were “pleased” Mr Milligan had withdrawn his appeal against Noosa Council’s decision to reject his intensive chicken meat complex.

“This operation had the potential to affect local air quality, be a noise nuisance, and the heavy vehicles servicing the farm would have taxed already inadequate local roads,” he said.

Mr Ritchie said the group of residents were not against farming, but believed “the economic benefits to the community of the provision of a couple of jobs, was far outweighed by the disruption to Cooroy’s

future as an education, retail, and medical services centre, and an inhibition to its growing tourism industry”.

The Planning and Environment Court appeal had sought to overturn council’s decision after council refused the large-scale poultry farm proposal in November 2015, citing conflicts with the Noosa Plan, insufficient distance from surrounding residences, and traffic and amenity issues.

Mr de Chastel said the application attracted significant community interest and was the subject of several petitions both for and against the proposed poultry farm.

It included eight sheds capable of housing 26,800 to 34,840 chickens, and with the potential to carry up to 230,000 birds at any one time.

“While the Noosa Plan supports rural farming activity in the hinterland, council determined that this proposal was, in the end, too great a scale, for the wrong site, and it had the potential to significantly impact on residents’ amenity for years to come,” Mr de Chastel said.

Powerlink Queensland joined council in the appeal given high voltage powerlines cross the site close to the proposed sheds, along with three local residents.

PADDLE PROTEST RAISED

Regional Australia’s richest opera award, the Dame Joan Sutherland Vocal Competition Award (DJSA), has taken its final breath as the Noosa Federation of Arts (NFA) closes its doors.

For nearly three decades, the NFA has hosted the finals of the prestigious national opera award held in Noosa.

The federation also aimed to promote the arts within the local community and elevate Noosa as a cultural destination, but will this month stop operations for good.

NFA founding chairman Meg Lawrence OAM said it was with deep regret the federation had to shut down due to a continuing lack of funding and a lack of interest by a younger generation.

“As a champion of the arts, we really were unique in Australia,” Meg said.

“We were a museum, art gallery, film club, dance organisation, music, theatre and more, all rolled into one. Anthony was instrumental in our being able to present, here in Noosa, the entire Queensland Philharmonic orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Braithwaite, and featuring Xong Dong Kong, the winner of the 5th Sydney International Piano Competition.”

More than 50 residents and environmentalists gathered on the banks of Lake Cootharabah on Sunday 9 April as part of a peaceful and artistic protest against the planned construction of a jetty at Elanda Point.

The protesters paddled out into the river with a poster reading Protect Elanda before raising their oars in solidarity.

Protesters said they were shocked by The Discovery Group’s plans to build a 70m jetty out into the water at Elanda Point, and were worried the downgrading of the fish habitat from a management A to a B would open the “floodgates” for more development within the national park and other pristine environments.

Residents and kayakers said they were worried the construction of a jetty would disturb the natural environment, as well as result in large boats coming into the pristine and shallow lake environment.

The Discovery Group managing director Wade Batty said that wasn’t the case and no channels would need to be dug to allow for passage.

“There will no dredging. There is no need for dredging. The extent of the jetty and the design of new vessels will provide safe and equitable access,” he said.

Mr Batty also defended the request to downgrade 2.6 hectares of fish habitat

Protesters said they were nervous to speak out against the development as they had heard business owners and leaders of environmental groups had received letters from solicitors. Mr Batty confirmed the group had started legal action.

“In order to protect our reputation, we have initiated legal action against a company and its directors for publishing defamatory, misleading and confidential information about the proposal. I do not wish to comment any further on this,” he said. ●

SISTERS TUNE IN TO

t was an impromptu singalong at a family barbecue that started Tewantin sisters Briannah, 17, and Tiana, 16, on their musical journey.

While the family was relaxing Tiana was coaxed into singing a song and as soon as the first note danced across the summer air it was clear the young girl had a gift.

Tiana started gigging, learning the guitar and exploring different genres of music and while many siblings often can’t stand each other or need their own hobbies, it’s simply not the case for the Dennis sisters.

The love between these two sisters is palpable.

They support one another, laugh together and genuinely enjoy each other’s company, bouncing off each other like old friends.

It is this love and support for each other that has seen them conquer the often terrifying world of live performances at the Gympie Music Muster twice and the Tamworth Country Music Festival, which led to an appearance on reality TV show, the X Factor.

The girls started training at the Australian Institute of Country Music under the talented and watchful eye of Dr Geoff Walden who encouraged Briannah to pick up the bass guitar and helped the girls find their unique country, pop, folk sound.

“He’s a great mentor for us. He is the one who formed us,” Tiana said.

“I was a soloist before and then Bri joined and he said you can pick up the bass and you can sing too.

“At first it was overwhelming. I hadn’t sung in public before and I hadn’t ever played an instrument,” Briannah said.

not much longer after Briannah first picked up a bass guitar, the sisters won the Junior Aristocrats Entertainer of the Year award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

This win was not only a dream come true, but also the start of a journey into the often volatile world of reality TV. “After we won we got a call from the X Factor,” Tiana said.

“We were invited to a private pre-audition in Tamworth during the festival and then we were invited to audition for the show in Sydney, which was on TV.” After two days of filming, the girls took to the stage faced by a panel of international judges, TV cameras, bright lights and the intense pressure to perform, but for these seasoned singers it was no big deal. Tiana and Briannah took to the stage and blew the judges away.

“We had each other and that was a big thing. We were able to bounce off each other. There were soloists there packing it, but we had each other,” Tiana said.

“We were really lucky to have big stage experience before the X Factor performance, so we were really comfortable.

“But we hadn’t really done filming like that before so there were lots of cameras.”

For the girls, the key to getting through the performance without stumbling was to simply ignore the judges.

“We just ignored them, honestly,” she said. “If you looked at them, they make faces on purpose to put you off. It’s reality TV, but I didn’t want to look at that.”

“Out of sight, out of mind. So we just focussed on our performance,” Briannah added.

After making it to the X Factor top 30 and bringing a tear to Guy Sebastian’s eye with their rendition of Vance Joy’s Fire and the Flood, the girls remain open-minded to the possibility of more reality TV appearances.

“We’re all about keeping doors open and not closing off options,” Tiana said.

“If the opportunity presented itself and we think well it’s there, it’s opened a door, we could walk through it.”

But while they await a possible call-up, the Dennis sisters are busy working on their first EP due to be released this year.

All the funds from gigs are being directed straight into the production of their first release, with the girls busy writing songs.

So what can fans expect from their first EP? What all teenage girls are into - love, friendship and life.

“We keep it pretty real,” they said.

“We have some nice love songs because we are 16 and 17, we have crushes. At the same time, our friendship is a strong thing. We prioritise our relationship together as sisters.

“We’re very close and we do a lot of things together.

“And life, we write a lot about life and experiences we have had.”

While the Dennis Sisters are quickly reaching the dizzying heights of stardom, they are still aware of those who want to try and cut them down and when they made the decision to leave school and study through distance education, they were not immune to criticism.

“We get told by so many people that we’re too young, we need to grow up, live our childhood and why are we working all the time and being home schooled, you’re supposed to be in a real school,” Tiana said.

“We’re not doing anything negative. We’re having fun and we’re not hurting anybody. We do it because we love it, it’s our passion. We’ve found home school to be really good.”

So the girls did what any artist would do, they wrote a song

about it with help from Sunshine Coast-based Sony writer Mishelle Bradford-Jones.

“The song is called Won’t Leave The World For Later and it’s about us just doing our thing and what we want,” Briannah said.

When the darlings of the Tamworth Country Music Festival look to the future they see tours, headlining festivals and more album releases, and with such determination, grit and a genuine love for their art, it won’t take long for this dream to come true.

“A big goal is to support ourselves through our music,” Tianna said.

“We’re very lucky. We’ve played Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Gympie Muster and we’re applying for more festivals, but it’s exciting when you see every year that your name gets bigger on the line-up. That is something that’s really cool to watch.”

“We’ve gone from being fillers on the line-up to now, we’re creeping up there with the rest.” ● 12344372-LD13-17

Free Internet For Business Expo & Networking More than 60 artists put paintbrush to body for the 2017 Australian Body Art Festival held for the first time in Cooroy over the weekend.

Some of the nation’s best body artists, face painters, visual artists and wearable art designers embraced the Wonderland theme as they create and paraded their masterpieces that were viewed by more than 7000 visitors.

Event manager Danielle Taylor said the theme of Wonderland drew a wide range of interpretations across all competition categories and some truly incredible art emerged.

“Some artists focused on Alice in Wonderland, others on Winter Wonderland and many on what their own personal Wonderland was, but they were all spectacular,” she said.

“It truly is phenomenal to watch the artists come together from near and far to create something special.”

The 2017 Australian Body Art Festival was a new festival to Cooroy and it was run as a community event by a team of more than 100 volunteers funded through donations, crowd funding and support from local businesses.

The winner of the brush and sponge body art was Kristy O’Neil, Janie Fearon took out the award for the best in the airbrush body art, Holly Hughes won the award for the best special effects body art and Kristy O’Neil won the award for face painting.

When it came to fabulous fashion made from recycled treasures, Jules McCrae won the award for wearable art. The best model for the weekend went to Simon Lyell on Saturday and Kristin Moss on Sunday.

A photo exhibition will now be held at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre from 3 to 16 May to showcase all the highlights of the festival. The winners of the photography competition will also be announced at the exhibition.

NEWS NO BIOSPHERE INTERFERENCE Noosa Council has confirmed it won’t intervene with the management of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, despite allegations of bullying.

Acting Mayor Frank Wilkie said communitybased organisations were responsible for their own internal governance.

“Many community groups that receive council funding face internal challenges,” Councillor Wilkie said. “While Council seeks to offer financial or other support where appropriate, it does not seek to manage the internal affairs of any organisation other than its own. This includes those with council representatives or those the council established with volunteer boards like Tourism Noosa or NBRF.” Cr Wilkie said the claims of bullying were an “internal matter for NBRF which has its own volunteer board and management structure”. ●

MP SLAMS HOSPITAL TRANSPORT Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the Labor Government had deceived local residents with claims they listened to the community about public transport access to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH).

Mr Elmes has called a $116,000 Translink survey “dodgy” and said the transport company allegedly didn’t collect or consider information from anyone north of the Maroochy River.

“Without any knowledge of the needs of my community, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport Jackie Trad MP has the audacity to claim a ‘lack of demand’ as the reason for why communities north of the Maroochy River did not get one of the 401 additional services added to the network following the review. The Noosa region has been penalised and it is just not good enough,” he said. ●

NEWS TAX BREAK FOR BUSINESS The 17,574 small businesses in the Wide Bay electorate will pay less tax under the Coalition Government’s Ten Year Enterprise Tax Plan passed in parliament last week, according to Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien.

Mr O’Brien said reducing the tax burden on small businesses would give business owners the opportunity to grow, employ more staff, and provide better pay and conditions.

Under the Coalition Government plan, Wide Bay businesses with turnovers up to $10 million are now defined as small businesses and will pay a lower company tax rate of 27.5 per cent from this financial year, before eventually falling to 25 per cent.

Small Business Minister Michael McCormack said the small business tax cut, simpler paperwork and greater support for small business were designed to take the pressure off small business, to help the sector grow and create local jobs. ●

NEW NOOSA WATER METERS During April, Unitywater will be identifying and replacing water meters nearing the end of their life cycle in Noosa Heads, Castaways Beach and Peregian Beach.

Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before any works and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them prior to replacing the meter. The contractors will be in Unitywater-branded vehicles and carry ID cards.

Following meter replacement, the contractor will leave a Works Completed card in the resident’s letterbox which records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference, and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account. ●

BOOKFEST PROCEEDS FOR COMMUNITY The Rotary Noosa Daybreak annual Bookfest Noosa is back again, with three days of bargains at the Noosa Leisure Centre.

The event is the group’s largest fund-raising event for the year, with all proceeds from the sale donated back to the community.

This year’s event will support Sunshine Butterflies and the Hear and Say Sunshine Coast Centre, as well as reward students for their creative writing and artwork.

NEWS BEACH PERMIT CALL OUT Noosa Council is calling for expressions of interest from businesses that are keen to operate on, and adjacent to, Main Beach.

Council will award 10 Commercial High Use Permits for a range of specific commercial activities on public land. These currently include learn-to-surf lessons, beach equipment hire, kayak hire and tours, surf dancing, kite surfing, ice cream sales, massage and water taxi services.

Council’s property manager Clint Irwin said the new permits would commence 1 July 2017, for a three-year term.

“Allowing some commercial activity at the beach adds to the experience for both locals and visitors, but it’s important we strike a balance between commercial activity and the community’s right to access and enjoy public space,” Mr Irwin said.

Expression of Interest documents, as well as details about submission requirements, will be available via tenders, from the Quick Links menu on council’s website, from 9am 7 April 2017. ●

FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH A 31-year-old man has died following a single vehicle crash at Coolum Beach on Sunday night 9 April.

Around 11.15pm, a vehicle travelling south along the Sunshine Motorway lost control and crashed into trees, causing the vehicle to roll a number of times.

The 31-year-old man from Palmview, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died at the scene. The driver, a 23-year-old man, sustained minor injuries, and was transported to the Kawana Hospital for treatment.

The Sunshine Motorway was closed between Coolum-Yandina Road and the Peregian Springs roundabout for two hours while the Forensic Crash Unit investigated the accident. Investigations are continuing. ●

CANCER BUSTERS ON TREACHOROUS JOURNEY Sunshine Beach resident Mark Panitz, co-driver Rod Gramenz and their $1000 rally car are ready to hit the track to raise funds for cancer research.

A ride on the 115-year-old Moreton the Ginger Train was the highlight of our day spent at The Ginger Factory. was time to board the train.

Moreton is over 100-years-old and offers a leisurely ride through sub-tropical gardens while a voice-over relays the history of the train, the Yandina township and the growth of the ginger industry, which is rather interesting.

Ginger has long been one of my family’s favourite spices finding its way into a lot of our home cooking, so we would often visited the Ginger Factory when I was growing up.

Back then, we came for the ice-cream, bags of crystallised ginger and a look through the gift shop.

Now, there’s an array of affordable family-friendly activities on offer with the iconic tourist attraction turning into a buzzing hive of activity during the school holidays.

So, when we were greeted by a warm autumn’s day, we took the opportunity to revisit an old favourite.

It was the start of the school holidays so the venue was busy with kids running between activities, enjoying ice-cream, learning about bees at the Super Bee and taking a tour of the factory.

But, there was only one thing my little one wanted to do and that was to take a ride on Moreton the Ginger Train.

We missed the first train and decided to wait for the 11am departure. While we waited, we had a coffee in the Ginger Cafe, and watched my daughter as she played with the other children in the large covered playground.

GREG’S LOVE OF SPORT AND COMMUNITY was introduced into the sporting world of cricket and rugby league.

“Our teams were based in Tewantin.

In the cricket season I played a lot of matches in Nambour and to get to the games I would hitch-hike to the games. I remember one game in particular when we had to play at Maleny and I had to hitch-hike; it took me seven lifts to get there.”

Greg’s highlight came when as an Under 19 he was selected as an allrounder to play for Queensland Country in Rockhampton.

“I bombed out but I remember we played against an up and coming kid named Greg Ritchie who went on to play for Australia and on retirement became somewhat famous as a TV comedian and after dinner speaker.”

Regarding the cricket when Greg started things were hard, it was tough to settle a permanent team; but they persevered and, despite players coming and going, Greg played in Nambour in the Sunshine Coast Competition winning two grand finals in A Grade.

Then in 1978 the big one - in their first year in A Grade, Tewantin won the premiership and the whole town celebrated.

“Everyone wanted to buy us a drink.

After about a whole week of celebrating, we

had to do something so we shot through to Kauri Creek in Tin Can Bay to gradually slow down and dry out.”

In rugby league Greg played his football for Pirates in Tewantin.

“I had several years in the league but eventually, I suffered from knee injuries and gave the game away.

“During these years, the early ‘70s, I was doing my time as an apprentice with a local builder. In those days there were no trade schools so all study was done by correspondence. Because of this, on completion all assignments had to be sent to the relevant government offices in Brisbane.

“Unfortunately when the big floods hit Brisbane a lot of government offices were swept away and all my first year files, along with a lot of those belonging to other apprentices, were lost. As a result, because there was no proof of that year’s study, I had to repeat my first year. Sounds crazy, but that’s what happened.

“Being in the construction industry in those days and watching the growth of our community was very interesting.

“For example the Noosa Sound was being developed and in ‘78/79 and the going price for a dry block was in the vicinity of $13,000. When building was going on they had trouble selling. There was a belief that the area was always

going to be in danger of flooding, so it took some for the buyers to gain confidence. Don’t forget that those were the days when Noosa was still a little two pub town; the Royal Mail at Tewantin and the Reef at Noosa and sometimes things took a while to change.”

It was about this time that the council introduced a very stringent set of rules regarding the construction of multi-storey buildings and Greg said “it was something that we all supported. Keep them low; we didn’t want another Gold Coast.”

With his interest in the game of rugby league still running strong, Greg was asked in the late 1980s to put his hand up for a seat on the management committee of the Pirates. This he did, and in the process spent several years as treasurer; and his commitment and loyalty since then has never wavered.

Times were tough and money and sponsors were hard to come by.

The club had not long shifted down from Cooroy and financially was in a bit of a tight spot. With the eventual building of a modern clubhouse and a lot of hard work by some great people, things began to progress.

He is a man of many seasons and like a lot of our good people who now reside permanently in Tewantin, Greg Furner was in 1957, born in Gympie.

“At that time my family lived on a farm at Ridgewood and I guess you could say that in 1966 they saw the light and shifted to Tewantin,” Gregg said.

“On arrival they built a house in Werin Street and my Dad got a job working for the local council; and we settled into a happy family life. These were the good old days when land didn’t cost a fortune.

“Our family bought two blocks for 500 pounds, roughly the equivalent of $1000.

The street wasn’t sealed, it was just a dirt road. This did not worry us kids - we just went ahead built a billy cart and raced up and down the road.”

Greg started his education at the Tewantin State School in 1966 Grade 5.

In those days it consisted of just two small buildings.

“One thing that really impressed me as a kid,” Greg said, “was one of our neighbours.

His name was Reg Hempsall and he was a wood turner by trade. A real genius with wood - he could make anything one of his masterpieces was making boomerangs. He made hundreds and he really had us kids fascinated.’’

After his time at Tewantin State, Greg moved to Noosa High and during this time

“For me to name names would not be right, for during my years with the club we have had management, coaches, players, supporters and sponsors whose contribution has been outstanding; great people doing a great job.

“On the playing field our first ever grand final win in ‘78 under coach Mick Plant and then golden era in the early 2000 when, under coach Noel Goldthorpe we won three in a row. Achievements that make our hard work all worthwhile.”

As the Pirates’ delegate, for 20 years of service on the Board of the Tewantin Sports Complex, which includes the Pirates facilities, the Council awarded Greg a Certificate of Appreciation for his services; an award well-deserved.

Prior to this in 1998, Greg received his highest award - Life Membership of the Pirates Rugby League Club, the honour which for him takes pride of place.

“For me it has been my pleasure to live and work within this town, sharing the good times and the bad plus the sporting life and everything that goes with it - and in particular watching my daughter Stella grow up.”

Like most professional woman, I’m faced with so much to do in so little time. But I remind myself constantly to never get so busy making a living that I forget to make a life. And to always make precious family time.

How do you love to unwind at the end of the work week?

We always make time as a family every Friday night to go out for dinner, it might be something simple like fish and chips on the beach or a nice restaurant but we always make the effort to catch up and reflect on the week.

What are you up to this Easter long weekend?

We plan to make a family picnic and just head out for the day, maybe the Mary Valley along the river, a lazy day on the beach, and another spent chilling round the pool.

MAGNIFICENT BODY OF WORK Cooroy turned into a Wonderland for the 2017 Australian Body Art Festival over the weekend. Over 7000 people headed to the arts precinct to take in the magical, mystical and creative body art works held for the first time by volunteers in Cooroy.

HARD TO IGNORE It was great to see so many people at Boreen Point last Sunday who participated in a peaceful protest against the proposal by the Discovery Group to downgrade an area of Fish Habitat ’A’ and build a jetty in Lake Cootharaba. There were people painting, singing, paddling in kayaks and generally making their feelings known. Let’s hope that the State Goverment listens to the Noosa Council, NICA, The Biosphere, The Greens and all those locals who have sent emails and petitions to the relevant minister, and refuses this application.

A TIGHT SQUEEZE “Little boxes made of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same” - all 58 of them squeezed onto the extension of the IGA supermarket site at Peregian Beach. FIRST-RESPONDER THANKS I would like to publicly thank the many volunteers and service personnel who worked to keep our community safe in the lead up to, during and following the aftermath of exTropical Cyclone Debbie.

Members of the local Disaster Management Group and Noosa Council did an excellent job at co-ordinating and disseminating information and working with emergency crews to ensure personnel were deployed where they were needed most.

Queensland Police, Queensland Ambulance and Queensland Fire and Rescue are required to cover their day-to-day operations as well as manage the impacts of a severe weather event, such as the one we have just experienced. I know they all have invested many long gruelling hours and personal angst to perform all that was required of them and more.

I would also like to acknowledge all of those families who opened their homes to people affected during the event and who lent a helping hand to neighbours and friends facing the big clean up or were living without power.

I will however single out one special individual Mr Stan Ryan, also known as ‘Stan the SES man’ as he announced his intention last week to hand over the leadership baton and take on the important role of training future SES stars.

When are The Greens going to stop using electricity from fossil-fuel-fired power stations and give up their petrol-guzzling 4WDs or is it a case of “do as I say not do as I do”.

In respect to battery storage, the proposed solar and battery storage project in SA’s Riverland is purported to be the largest in the world but will only have an effective generating and storage capacity of 100 megawatts at a cost of over $1 billion.

Hazelwood had a capacity of 1600 megawatts which is now lost to the grid with no replacement generation as a direct result of the machinations of the loony left and climate alarmists.

POWER POLITICS Nobody in their right mind would believe that solar power could provide cheap, reliable electricity to power our homes and our industries 24/7. Yet in his letter (Noosa Today, 6 April), Steve Hall finally dispels all doubt that he deserves some modicum of credibility. He obviously believes that the sun shines 24 hours every day, uninterrupted by clouds. Furthermore, he does not seem to realise that the expensive and extremely variable solar power available to the grid is heavily subsidised by governments (us taxpayers), nor that a great deal of CO2 and variety of genuine pollutants are emitted in the manufacture of these fragile panels.

He denigrates that most concentrated form of stored solar energy, coal. By wishing to condemn Australia to a “solar energy” future, he and his fellow greenies would have us become a third-world nation while others thrive by continuing to use increasing quantities his evil fossil fuels (e.g. “black gold”) for instance there are 1500 coal-fired power stations in various stages of construction in the world. In fact, India and China are commissioning a new Hazelwood-equivalent every week.

NEED FOR REVIEW I object to Noosa Council funding the NBRFNoosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation. Being a single dad of a child of bullying, I find it extremely troubling council’s response is that it is a completely separate entity continuing with its funding. Bad message to our kids.

What is council’s code of conduct and corporate social responsibility? A search on the website lists the mayor as a director. I agree an independent review of this organisation is fitting and necessary.

SHARE THE BENEFITS The recent announcement that our local tourism sector has achieved $900m annually is great news. Someone said this is a 31 per cent increase - outstanding. Well done all.

So, is it time again to ask, “How is this translated into renewing infrastructure, creating new facilities and services and importantly growth in council’s budget to improve the ‘liveability’ of Noosa for Noosans? Council is squeezed for funds by it maintaining an unrealistically low rate-base, yet Noosa now generates nearly 10 per cent of Queensland’s tourism turnover.

Almost exclusively the announced increase in visitor spend goes into the hands of tourism providers. The cascade effect and multiplier effect distributes a portion of this largesse further. The direct and indirect impact is hopefully felt in the jobs market, new investment in things and security of business risk. And, of course, profits.

But just how does our council and we residents benefit? What does the council get of this huge growth to maintain, repair, renew and create services, facilities and general improve council’s bottom line across all areas of expenditure? Tourism is, after all, our number one industry according to Tourism Noosa.

What is Noosa Council’s and Tourism Noosa’s strategy to distribute the new wealth in the shire through improved services, new facilities and renewal and maintenance of shared built infrastructure? After all, this maintains the attractiveness of this place for visitors and residents.

The much-loved ABC show Dance Academy has made it to the big screen. Gold Coast screenwriter Samantha Strauss translates her multi-award winning show about a group of teenagers at the Australian Dance Academy to the big screen.

Set with a backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and New York City, the movie picks up 18 months after the end of the television series. All the students have left the academy and are now trying to make their way in the world with varying degrees of success. Featuring many of the original cast as well as some of Australia’s most well-known actors, this is perfect holiday fare particularly for fans of the show. ●

Former SBS Feed presenter and Gold Coast journalist Maria Lewis is back with the sequel to her highly original tale of a young half Maori woman who discovers her inner Werewolf.

Her sassy-feisty heroine Tommi Grayson is back learning more about her heritage (both Maori and furred) and about the world she now lives in and taking on the big, big bads of the world without smudging her lipstick or getting a brightly coloured hair out of place (well maybe).

This second outing neatly builds on her debut and sees Tommi further developing into a strong female protagonist. ●

The nice thing about the recent Disney live-action remake of Beauty and The Beast was that it not only combined most things that were good about the original movie and the subsequent stage musical, but it also brought us some new Alan Menkin tunes.

And of course unlike the other smashhit musical movie of recent times, there has been very little criticism of the vocal talent used.

The soundtrack features all the favourites from the cast of the movie (including probably one of the best Gaston’s ever by Welsh actor Luke Evans), new tracks and the vocal talents of Celine Dion, Ariana Grande and John Legend and Josh Groban. ●

WHAT’S ON BE SEEN AT THE PICKLED POSSUM The annual Cooroy Fusion Festival on 14 May is a showcase of everything wonderful about the Noosa Hinterland.

Pickled Possum is one of the firm favourites with festival goers but it isn’t a local delicacy, it’s the name of the festival bar!

“The Pickled Possum Bar is situated in an ideal location with a great view of the entertainment on the Bendigo Bank stage and all the surrounding crowds throughout the markets,” said Cooroy Fusion Festival committee chair Chris Bell.

This simple recipe which is sure to become a favourite has been supplied by Zeb Gilbert, co-owner and executive chef at The Cooking School Noosa + Wasabi Restaurant and Bar+ Ibento Boutique Event Space.

Barbecued Local Squid Salad with Lemongrass Dressing 500 grams cleaned local squid or cuttlefish tubes.

2 tbsp vegetable oil.

Salad ¡ Mix 2 cups washed and picked herbs (coriander, basil ,Thai basil, mint). ¡ 1/2 continental cucumber, sliced. ¡ 1 cup bean sprouts. ¡ 2 long red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced. ¡ 2 tbsp eshallots, thinly sliced. ¡ 1/2 cup pomelo or grapefruit segments Crispy shallots (optional) Dressing ¡ 2 tbsp fish sauce. ¡ 2 tbsp lime juice. ¡ 2 tbsp water. ¡ 2 tbsp palm sugar or caster sugar. ¡ 5 cm piece lemon grass (use the white part of the lemongrass) grated on a microplane.

Method Place cleaned squid in a bowl and pour oil over it to coat. This will help it not stick to the barbecue. In a separate bowl place all the salad ingredients, except the crispy shallots, and mix.

Barbecue cuttlefish in small batches on a high heat. When cooked, place on a serving platter.

Place salad mix on top and drizzle over dressing. Top with the crispy shallots.

SIX STEPS TO RECLAIM DIET Looking to improve your diet?

If you consider the kitchen as the heart of your home, you may want to think about how it affects your waistline.

Kitchens are often rooms with multiple hats - not only are they a place to enjoy good food, it is often a family gathering spot, an entertainment centre, and even sometimes a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s art museum.

With so many hours spent in kitchens, it makes sense to reflect on how this one room may be affecting our health.

Here are six points to consider: One, how stocked is your fridge? Having a giant refrigerator and buying in bulk may sound like a great idea, but too much space and produce can have inadvertent costs. When your kitchen is stockpiled with treat food healthy eating can more easily be replaced with a binge. Also, buying too much food at once can result in spoiled fruit and vegetables - causing you to grab a takeaway. Instead, try buying less food, but shopping more frequently.

Two, take a look at your dishes. People tend to pile on more food when their plate or bowl has extra room. If you are trying control your portion sizes, you may want to use a smaller dish. This way there wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be an issue if you habitually finish what is on your plate.

Three, what colour are your walls?

While cool colours like blue, purple and green seem to have a calming effect and are considered appetite-suppressing, research suggests warm colours such as red and yellow make us more excited and stimulate appetite.

Four, think out of sight - out of mind.

The good news is that a healthy diet, combined with regular physical activity and a healthy body weight can reduce cancer risk.

While there is no one food that can protect against cancer, there are steps you can take to lower your overall risk. A healthy diet, including two serves of fruit and five of vegetable each day may protect against cancers including cancer of the bowel, liver, oesophagus (food pipe), lung and stomach.

Tips to eat more fruit and vegetables. Double your serving of vegetables. Try a new fruit each week. Use frozen vegies for convenience. Include vegies with your lunch. Add extra vegies to all recipes. Have fruit instead of sweets

majority of your counter space clear for meal prep. By keeping the kitchen for its main purpose, you may find that you focus more on your food and listen to fullness cues.

Six, stop serving family style. When you lay out an all-you-can-eat buffet on the dining table you are more likely to overeat.

Instead, opt for a per-person single service and limit options for second-helpings by removing leftovers from sight. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re concerned about empty stomachs, serve a colourful healthy salad as a centrepiece on the dining table. â&#x2014;?

“The key from our point of view is to be local, fresh and convenient, and that’s really resonated with the local community,” Roz said.

The state-of-the-art 1200m2 store features a fresh food hall filled with local and international delicacies inspired by a collection of ideas researched by the Whites during their travels across the globe while still maintaining a local Peregian Beach influence.

“The store has a huge focus on offering local goods and produce including Pioneer Coffee sourced from Yandina and brewed fresh from the in-store barista, to a large array of gourmet food as well as a wide selection of local and international cheese, smallgoods, vegan/ vegetarian options, organics and a special dietary section,” Roz added.

A team of food retailing professionals is led by store manager, Leanne Blyde and includes on-site butchers offering an exclusive brand of ‘Father and Son’ gourmet sausages, which are made on site, the in-store baker offers fresh ciabatta bread, French sticks, sweet and savoury lines as well as freshly prepared meals.

NOOSA IS THE PLACE TO BE Noosa is looking great for the Easter break and if the weather plays the game, we should see some sensational catches.

If this week is anything to go by, the fishing will be exceptional both offshore and on.

The reefs have been firing with Sunshine Reef producing some fantastic Longtail tuna, Mack tuna and Spanish mackerel, while from the bottom we saw squire, moses perch, coral trout, and sweetlip.

Small metal slugs and micro jigs have been working well for the tuna, with the odd fish being caught on floaters. Mackerel have been taking live baits, floaters and trolled pillies and hard body lures.

If the weather plays the game, a trip to the Barwon Banks should be worthwhile, with great snapper on the high tide, sweetlip, pearl perch and some big jew all on offer. By all reports, there has been a fair bit of run so the bigger sinkers are a must.

North Reef should also fire with good numbers of spotted and spanish mackerel. A good berley trail will help to keep the fish around the boat, cut up pillies are your best bet.

Reefies should also been on the chew with pearl perch, tusk fish, squire, cod, teraglin jewfish, all hitting the decks.

In the river we have seen some great fishing with the bread and butter species like whiting, bream and flathead all taken along the Gympie Terrace stretch.

Woods Bay has had some great mixed schools of trevally (GT, big eye, tea leaf and goldens) responding well to micro jigs, blades and prawns profile soft plastics.

There have also been good sized bream on small pillies and strips of bonito along with the odd mangrove jack.

Around the Frying Pan, whiting have been the main target with good numbers and quality fish being caught on live worms, yabbies, surface lures and even crab profile soft plastics.

Flathead have been in great numbers in the river with some great fish taken down towards the mouth, these fish lay in wait for passing bait fish as they make their way in and out of the river.

Mostly Sunny has seen some great sized fish landed.

On the beach there have been some great sized swallow tail dart with the area north of Teewah on Noosa’s North Shore really firing, if the wind plays the game the early morning tides will be the best bite.

For the night anglers the time from sunset to moonrise will be your best bet for a large tailor or jew. Bait to tempt that elusive jewie is fresh mullet, bonito fillet, local squid or large clump of beach worms.

Don’t forget your permits if you are heading up to the Noosa North Shore. On Noosa’s southern beaches, the area around Peregian and Marcus Beaches has been good for whiting and the locals tell me the run-out tide is the best bite.

SEAHORSES CELEBRATE FIFTH BIRTHDAY It was the perfect day to celebrate the fifth birthday of the Noosa Seahorse Nippers.

Bright and sunny and with a safe gentle one metre wave rolling onto the beach and out beyond the small break, calm clear waters.

With the support of the Noosa Shire Council, car park attendants Ken Edwards and Peter Williams - members of the Noosa Surf Club - conducted a bus shuttle from the Lions Park to Noosa’s Main Beach car park.

This council gesture has been greatly appreciated as getting the families and the Nippers to the beaches, in particular when some are in wheelchairs, had indeed created a problem. Now it is all done - safely and quickly.

For the opening day, enrolment was good with 38 Nippers registered and 65 lifesavers signing on to work as minders and water safety officers.

This was backed up by the duty patrol and the patrol captain could be seen moving around. Water safety at its best.

“This has been a good start to our season. On the first day we usually hold our breath and pray for good weather, good attendance and a big support group. Happy to say we have all,” chief organiser Steve Mawby said.

Standing on the water’s edge, I spotted a familiar face.

As I approached, he turned and extended his hand, and with a happy smile announced, “We are back for another season.”

We shook hands and on behalf of the Noosa Surf club I extended a warm and sincere welcome.

The Seahorse Nippers program is back for 2017.

Grade 1 had the season’s frontrunners Blizzard (B. Blakemore, R. Wheller and J. Campbell) edge out a determined Tornadoes ( R. Gore, A. Munro, M. Clarke ) in a match that produced multiple five setters and with only a reversal of two of those rubbers there would have been a different outcome.

Best individual went to B. Blakemore in a close countback over R. Gore and S. Gardner.

Competition is on Wednesday nights from 7 p.m, and social/senior play is held Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10 till noon.

Ross Fisher. While mingling he took the opportunity to welcome a special guest. Her name was Tina Logan and she hails from San Diego, USA. “Back home I work for an organisation known as The National Ability Center and we do a similar thing. We also work for children, adults and wounded veterans with special needs. We help by supplying certified instructors and amongst the many things we are involved with are skiing and tandem bike riding for the blind. In this one we provide a person with no disabilities on the front and the blind riding behind. This is just one of the many events that prove very popular.”

During the morning she took the opportunity to take photographs and ask questions of the work team.

“This is a great concept and I can’t wait to show folks back home what you Aussies are doing. This is very, very interesting - really outstanding.” ●

I was very happy with our first hit out as all of the hard work preseason definitely paid off in comparison to last year.

Our transition play from back to forward was great. Logan in the ruck was rock solid like always, Lebler was a clear

stand out and best on ground by far. His speed and willingness to stick to our team structure was outstanding. Benny Fuller was brilliant across half back flank rebounding everything and having shots on goal.

Our back six were fantastic only allowing a few goals for the day. Young ‘Gus Bus’ in the backline showed everyone exactly what’s required to play in my all-star reserves team.

Down to the forwards - woweee the fire power we have down there will be very hard to stop this season! Patty, Seb, Gaff and Friendy were very exciting to watch. A little scratchy at times though, hence why we kicked so poorly in front of goal.

There’s a few more players to come back in so there should be plenty of smiles this season.

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone raise the bar so high in a single event since, well, Kelly.

It was funny, I started out watching the Drug Awareness Margaret River Pro from the VIP Lounge at Surfers Point and finished it watching on my phone from a park in Avalon Beach in Sydney, but no matter how you viewed it, John John’s performance throughout was next level.

My old surf photographer mate Peter “Joli” Wilson has shot more ASP and WSL heats than anyone over the last 40 years, and he blogged: “John’s performance redefined the way to surf Margaret River. Long time observers were saying that they had never seen anyone surf Margaret River like John did over the past few days. His surfing was sublime with positioning and timing; his boards seemed to be cutting through sections and getting more speed than anyone else.”

On that field in Avalon, another old mate, former pro surfer and Quiksilver executive Bruce Raymond took time out from his new restaurant venture to come

and say hi between the semis and the final.

Bruce, who was one of Kelly Slater’s mentors in the early days, said: “In my lifetime I never thought I’d see anyone surf better than Kelly, but I just have.”

It’s hard to define exactly what John John (sorry, I still can’t think of him by other than his baby name) is doing that puts him in a class of his own, but my best guess is that he casually links big moves that other surfers are capable of doing, but he adds 20 or 30 per cent to them. The wow factor comes into play virtually every time he changes direction.

There was no better example of this than Big Saturday. When the greats were faltering on 15-foot faces held up by stiff offshore winds - even Kelly tried too hard - John John just paddled his six-two into the lineup and casually picked off the bombs like it was a two-foot shorebreak. He made no concessions to the power of the ocean, just stood and delivered.

When the Margaret River Pro went into hiatus for a long week of small swell and onshore winds, there was a lot of speculation about whether John John could

keep the momentum going, but in the second quarter final he came straight out of the boxes with a nine plus to get the ball rolling against Michel Bourez.

His heat scores from this point on were composed entirely of nine-plus waves. He combo-ed Gold Coaster Jack Freestone in the semis and did the same to old foe Kolohe Andino in the final.

His performances were career-shattering for his rivals. As Kolohe said at the presentations: “I’m just thankful I was on the other side of the draw.”

John John now goes into Bells Beach in the ratings leader’s yellow jersey, seeming unstoppable in his campaign for a second world title. But there are nine events to come and anything could happen. Like the kid who was born to rule could break a leg!

Photo WSL. He’d heard I had a large collection of vintage magazines and surf memorabilia and offered me a stall.

We flew down with two large suitcases full of surf history and came back with very little. The Deus swap meet was a huge success.

Damo has had an interesting career path since then but his interest in collectible surfboards has never faltered, and when he phoned me about his new swap meet in Avalon, I didn’t hesitate. This time we drove down with a truckload of books and old mags, set up alongside surfing tinkers Dick Hoole, Mexican Sumpter and Jack McCoy and enjoyed another great day in the warm autumn sun.

In the late afternoon I screened Men of Wood and Foam in the bar of the adjacent Avalon Bowls Club, followed by a chat show with surfboard pioneers Denny Keogh and Mick Dooley.

Avalon is such a magnet for creative talent that the small room was soon packed with people like photographer and filmmaker John “Oggy” Ogden, Tony “Captain Goodvibes” Edwards, Swellnet editor Stu Nettle, vodka baron Vitek, and Bali surf shop pioneers John and Val Hames.

It was an older demographic, to be sure, but fortunately surfer mates Rob Bain and Matty Chojnacki turned up and helped push the average age down into merely middle.
