Celebrating 150 years

Looking back at major milestones from across the 150 years of racing in Cranbourne 1867 - The first registered race meeting was held in Cranbourne over two days on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 April. The 1865 Melbourne Cup winner Toryboy won the feature The Cranbourne Handicap worth 30 sovereigns.

1868 - The Shire of Cranbourne is proclaimed the the town’s feature race changed to the Shire of Cranbourne Handicap, won for the first two years by Miss Morris.

1888 - Train line built to Cranbourne for both passengers and horses.

1890 - A Corinthian Handicap worth 25 sovereigns restricted to locally trained horses. The population of Cranbourne at the time was 130.

1898 - The 15-year-old Hotspur won two races - the Clyde Flutter and Bookmakers Purse at the meeting in March.

1911 - A stewards room was built and a rail around part of the track in October.

1927 - The Cranbourne Handicap was renamed the Cranbourne Cup. The Jack Holt-trained Tullius won the race and trophy valued at 50 guineas.

1929 - Entries for the Cranbourne Cup were so large so they divided the race and ran two cups. A toss of a coin determined who got the trophy. Teenage apprentice Scobie Breasley - who would go on to be a great of the turf - rode one of the winners.

1931 - The back straight was extended from five furlongs to six furlongs and a telephone was installed at the racecourse for the first time.

1942-46 - The club went into recess during World War II and the racecourse was taken over by the Defence Department.

1953 - A sand track was built for training.

1954 - Cranbourne Shire Council declared a half-day holiday for the Cranbourne Cup, which continued until 1979.

1960 - Channel 9 telecast two races from Cranbourne.

1961 - The TAB covered a Cranbourne meeting for the first time in March.

1962-63 - Maurie Wilmott won the first of eight consecutive trainers’ premierships.

1967 - The Lawson B. Poole Grandstand was officially opened on 22 February.

1970-71 - Index became the first and only dual winner of the Cranbourne Cup. 1978 - Turf champion Manikato kicked off a stellar career by winning the two-year-old Tooradin Handicap at his first start on 25 January.

1981 - Approximately 100 trainers and 400 horses used the training facilities.

1982 - Yvonne Blackwood was appointed club secretary, only the second female to hold that position in Victoria, following Sale’s Helen Cantwell.

1984 - Cup prizemoney was increased to $30,000 - having been $2000 in 1962 and $7000 in 1972.

1984-85 - Tommy Harrison wins his seventh Cranbourne trainers’ premiership.

1988 - A committee was appointed to administer a proposed training complex on land adjacent to the racecourse, which became operational in 1990.

1992 - Cranbourne conducted its first Sunday race meeting on 13 December.

1994 - Main Strike wins the Cranbourne Cup for the local father and son combination of Allan and Craig Williams.

1999 - Figurehead wins the Cranbourne Cup in record time, a mark that stands today.

2000 - Trios Sports Club is officially opened, a joint venture between the three racing codes.

2005 - Turf champion El Segundo wins his maiden and sets the 1200m track record at his first start, ridden by Michelle Payne.

2007 - The club implements a drought-proofing strategy.

2008 - The club begins racing every second Sunday.

2009 - Champion mare Black Caviar wins her first official trial at Cranbourne by five lengths on 1 September. She would go on to win all her 25 race starts.

2011 - Cranbourne wins the title of Country Racing Club of the Year.

2012 - Cranbourne conducted its first night race meeting on 9 March.

2014 - The official opening of the $4.5 million grandstand and function centre.

2015 - The racecourse is rezoned to Special Use and a master plan is drawn up proposing a major hotel and convention centre. The on-course stabling precinct commences and Cranbourne Cup prizemoney increases to $300,000.

2016 - The Cranbourne Cup meeting is abandoned due to damaging winds.

Celebrating 150 years

Quality from the start

By Garry Howe Cranbourne was little more than a general store, a pub and a few houses and the Melbourne Cup still a novelty when racing first came to town.

Yet the town - and what would become one of the world’s most famous horse races - have an indelible link.

Cranbourne was gazetted as a town in 1861, the year Archer won the first Melbourne Cup. The local turf club was formed six years later and a former Melbourne Cup winner, the aged gelding Toryboy, won the first feature race, the Cranbourne Handicap.

As author Marc Fiddian noted in the club’s official history Of Heath and Horses, that win established a very early link between Cranbourne and metropolitan racing.

The first race conducted on that initial two-day meeting on 22-23 April 1867 was a Maiden Plate, won by a horse called Warrior. The two mile (3218m) Cranbourne Handicap carried prizemoney of 30 sovereigns and attracted a field of seven.

Incredibly Toryboy, who had won the Melbourne Cup two years previously, did not step out as favourite.

Yet carrying 52.5kg (8st 4lb) he won easily from Cartouche, with the punters’ elect Crono coming in third.

Toryboy had run fifth in Archer’s first Melbourne Cup in 1861, sixth to the same horse the following year and, having missed the ’63 and ’64 cups, was officially considered ‘aged’ when he lined up at Flemington again in 1865.

He was trained by P. Miley and owned by Prahran draper B.C. Marshall, who is purported to have won a fortune on his Melbourne Cup win, loading up at 100-1 and again at 20-1.

The reason for his confidence was a secret trial the Sunday before the cup, where he clocked three minutes, 44 seconds for the two miles, exactly the time posted in the cup on the Tuesday.

A grateful and cashed up Mr Marshall gave the entire prizemoney - just over 1000 pounds - to the trainer and the jockey and sold the trophy, which he considered a ‘monstrosity’ to the Flemington Hunt Club (and is now owned by wine icon Wolf Blass).

So the link between Cranbourne and the industry’s major players had been established - and has continued in the ensuing years.

The racecourse has hosted - and produced - some of the country’s best horseflesh.

Champion sprinter Manikato - who won the William Reid Stakes in five successive years - won his first race on the course, the two-year-old Tooradin Handicap in January 1978.

The 2007 Cox Plate winner El Segundo unleashed a jaw-dropping burst down the straight to win his maiden race in 2005 for trainer Colin Little and jockey Michelle Payne.

Unbeaten speedster Black Caviar the horse of this generation - won her first trial at Cranbourne by five lengths!

Locally trained stars like Nicholas John, Sky Heights, Saleous, Apache Cat, Pinker Pinker, Bon Hoffa and more recently The Quarterback have enjoyed success at the top level.

Cranbourne Turf Club turns 150 next week - and it wants everyone to join the party.

The club will open the gates to the racecourse for its big anniversary meeting next Friday night, 21 April, with free entry and plenty to entertain people of all ages.

Major players from the past - committee members, trainers, jockeys administrators and the like - have been invited to a special celebration in the upstairs dining room, with a cocktail style function with drinks, appropriately, at $1.50.

“We’ve got a lot to celebrate,“ said club chief executive Neil Bainbridge.

“We are now the largest industry in the largest municipality in Victoria.

“I would encourage everyone to come along and join in the party.“

The tradition started by a Melbourne Cup winner 150 years ago continues to this day.

Celebrating 150 years

As the Cranbourne Turf Club prepares to celebrate 150 years of racing, we asked some of the major players of more recent times to share their insights and memories.

How long have you trained at Cranbourne?

I started training when I was 21, and trained for 51 years, before retiring last year. I am the longest ever serving trainer at Cranbourne.

Name the three best horses you have trained?

Hard question, probably the best a horse called Nicholas John. He was a super horse we won 10 out of 13 starts with him, including the 1982 G1 AJC Metropolitan Handicap, won a lot of money with him on the punt. Sky Heights was a great horse who I won a number of Group 1s with. De Gaulle Lane and Inaflury were also both Group 1 winners who I thought I could have won a Cox Plate with if I’d set them for the race.

What has been your most memorable win as a trainer?

Sky Heights winning the G1 AJC Australian Derby, it was my best setting of a horse to win a Group 1.

Name the best ever horse trained at Cranbourne?

Apache Cat was a great sprinter who won multiple Group 1s (8), and also my horse Sky Heights won four Group 1 races and $4.2m in prizemoney, those two are the best performed horses to come out of Cranbourne.

What are your memories of training when the Training Complex opened in 1990?

DOUG HARRISON Doug Harrison was born on the 22 June 1955 and is from a family steeped in racing history. His father Tom was a brilliant trainer for many years, winning seven Cranbourne training premierships, brother Kevin was an outstanding jockey and trainer, brother Tony a Group 1 winning horse trainer, while Alan Williams, another leading jockey and trainer, is Doug Harrison’s brother-inlaw. Finally, Doug is the uncle of one of Victoria’s leading jockey’s Craig Williams.

How long have you trained at Cranbourne?

In 1968 the family shifted to Cranbourne. In 1980, dad was badly injured by a horse at Pakenham, and he suggested I better take out my trainer’s licence to help out.

Tommy Harrison and I fought like hell with the Racecourse Licensing Board to get the Training Complex build, as it was originally planned to be built at Geelong. I was heavily involved in the planning of the Cranbourne Training Complex, and it was a dream moving from training at the Turf Club to the Training Complex. Training is not compromised by any race meetings, you can trial your horses regularly, and there were a number of different tracks to train on.

What has been the greatest change or innovation at Cranbourne?

Definitely the Training Complex, it put Cranbourne on the map, and is the best training facility in Australia.

You were known for liking a bet and pulling off a plunge, tell us one of your favourites?

One of my favourites was the day a gelding called Torquil won at Caulfield in a 1100m Welter Handicap beating Mannerism. Cindy saddled him as I was in New Zealand. A trackwork rider had ridden him a few weeks prior and was asking too many questions, so he was replaced by Robbie Scarlett who was quiet and very reliable. I asked Robbie to take this trackwork rider fishing in a boat the day of the race, so I could protect the price. Robbie told him a minute before the race jumped and he was furious. Greg Hall was riding and I instructed Cindy to give him the colours at the last minute, and only talk to Greg when you leg him up in the mounting yard, and say, ‘Dad said this will win’. He did win, beating Mannerism by 1.5 lengths. During the week Torquil worked with Apollo Run (G2 winner), and The Guida (G1 winner), and we made him carry extra lead in the saddle and beat them comfortably in the gallop, so we were very confident that day at Caulfield and got 18-1!

Name the three best horses you have trained?

Natural Blitz, he earned $1.3m in prizemoney, won five G2 races, ran in two Cox Plates, finished fourth in a Caulfield Cup and also second behind Northerly in the 2003 G1 Australian Cup. Dad’s best was probably Gondolier, he ran third in the Newmarket, raced against champions Manikato and Dulcify. (Tommy also trained Havelock, name of Doug’s training property.

Havelock won the 1966 Cranbourne Cup, was a Group 1 winner and raced until he was 13, starting a remarkable 204 times).

What has been your most memorable win as a trainer?

My most memorable non-winning incident was the now famous 1996 Christmas Stakes at Caulfield where my horse Hon Kwok Star, ridden

by Andrew Payne, and Cogitate, ridden by Jason Patton, got tangled up on the corner and the jockeys ended up switching horses. It’s funny how they turned out to be brothers-in-law. This is still seen in racing media today.

My most memorable win here at Cranbourne was winning the Tommy Harrison Plate named after my dad with Alrouz in 2013. I’ve also won the Travis Harrison Apprentices Cup named after my nephew with a horse called Lord Ardsley.

Name the best ever horse trained at Cranbourne?

Apache Cat or Sky Heights, both multiple Group 1 winners.

What are your memories of training when the Training Complex opened in 1990?

My father Tommy formed the trainers committee here at Cranbourne and was instrumental, along with Colin Alderson and Barry Bourke, in getting the Training Complex built here. Dad saw a training complex at Cambridge in New Zealand and thought we need this in Melbourne.

The whole concept was to not have barriers that inhibit training at racecourses. The original idea was to have on course stables, and it’s taken 25=plus years to get these built.

What has been the greatest change or innovation at Cranbourne?

The widening of the race track and also the development of the Cranbourne Training Complex.

WENDY KELLY How long have you trained at Cranbourne?

I’ve trained here for 20 years, prior to that I spent three years at Pakenham, and then 12 months at Mornington.

Name the three best horses you have trained?

Bon Hoffa was clearly the best. He’s the only horse to win back-to-back Group 3 Bobby Lewis Qualitys, and the obvious highlight was his win in the G1 Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield. He has gone on to be a pretty promising sire, and I have 10 of his progeny in my table.

What has been your most memorable win as a trainer?

Definitely the G1 Rupert Clarke Stakes and the most memorable here at Cranbourne was winning on Cranbourne Cup day in 2006 with Bon Hoffa.

Name the best ever horse trained at Cranbourne?

Apache Cat is the first that comes to mind, he won a number of Group 1s.

What has been the greatest change or innovation at Cranbourne?

I think current CEO Neil Bainbridge has been the most innovative CEO we have had here at Cranbourne, and also the sand trails out the back on the Training Complex have been a great asset. They are about 1.4km and horses seem to love working out on these away from the training tracks.

Do you have a favourite punting story on one of your horses?

Celebrating 150 years

I don’t bet but still have a few favourites my owners have enjoyed. I got a horse called High Socks from another trainer, he was a bit of a rogue, but I eventually sorted out his issues. I told all the boys that owned him I thought he would win at Sandown one day, and he did at a big price (25-1). They all backed him heavily and took him in all sorts of multiples and got them including the trifecta which paid very well from memory (second horse 15-1, third horse 13-2 and the favourite unplaced). I’ll never forget them going wild after the race and high fiving everyone.

Bon Hoffa also won one day at Ballarat and drew the outside over 1200m, so he was 10-1. I told all the owners he would win and to back him, which they did, and continued to back him all day. I think we were in the second last race, and I remember the bookies were still paying out my owners well after the last race, one of them may have paid off his house that day!

ROBBIE GRIFFITHS How long have you trained at Cranbourne?

I rode successfully as a jockey before weight issues forced an early retirement but I always

knew I wanted to be a thoroughbred trainer. I was a stable foreman for Tony Vasil for a year and then began training in 1991, training my first winner on Boxing Day of that year at Geelong.

Name the three best horses you have trained?

The Quarterback provided me with my first Group 1 winner in last year’s Newmarket Handicap, and has won nine races and over $1.5m in prizemoney. Angelic Light was a great sprinting mare who was unlucky with all the injuries she had. She was three-time Group 1 placed who I thought should have won a G1 race during her career. It’s hard to leave a horse like Dandy Kid out, he won 19 races and over $800,000 in prizemoney and holds the record for the most wins at Moonee Valley (15), that probably won’t be broken.

What has been your most memorable win as a trainer?

The Quarterback winning my first ever Group 1 at Flemington last year in the Newmarket. My most memorable win here at Cranbourne was with a horse called Spring Theme in 1993 when he won a race here on Cup Day. I was just starting to get going, and it was a big buzz to win on Cup Day. Also Go Raami won here at Cranbourne in June in of 1994, breaking the course record with my old mate Ivan Culliver aboard, I think this stood for a long time too.

Name the best ever horse trained at Cranbourne?

Probably Sky Heights, he was a multiple Group 1 winner.

What has been the greatest change or innovation at Cranbourne?

Neil Bainbridge (CEO)and Simon Hodgson (Track Manager) have done a great job, they make the Training Complex continually evolve, with regular improvements around the place Do you have a favourite plunge/punting story?

Probably as mentioned earlier Go Raami winning here at Cranbourne breaking the track record, and was $16.80 on the tote. He was first up over 1600m, wasn’t done in Australia back then, Ivan rode and went straight to the front and lead the whole way, never looked like getting beat!

PAT HYLAND How long have you trained at Cranbourne?

I’ve been training for 25 years, after riding for 35 years.

Name the 3 best horses you have trained?

Saleous has been the best so far, so was a two time Group 1 winner, and twice G1 placed who won over a million dollars. Bonaria was next best, she won the Group 1 Myer Classic on Derby Day. Southern Crown was also a favourite of mine, he won 12 races, four of those at Flemington including the Listed Bagot Handicap. He also won a hurdle race here at Cranbourne.

What has been your most memorable win as a trainer?

The G1 VRC Oaks with Saleous. She had won the traditional lead up, the G2 Wakeful Stakes on Derby Day, after finishing second in the G1 Thousand Guineas, so she had a really good spring campaign. As a rider Vain winning the G1 Golden Slipper was my most satisfying and was easily the best horse I rode.

Name the best ever horse trained at Cranbourne?

Sky Heights was probably the best horse I’ve seen trained here at Cranbourne, he was a great middle distance horse.

What has been the greatest change or innovation at Cranbourne?

The progress that the club and complex have made, with continued innovation.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said most car-stealing home invaders were seeking car keys in plain sight because they didn’t want confrontation.

Most modern cars were stolen using the keys - found in stolen purses, handbags, homes or even left in car ignitions, Asst Comm Hill said.

He told of how thieves had driven through a showroom’s double-plate glass window to steal two vehicles in 2015. They stole a third car from the rear of the premises even while police were investigating on-site.

Casey deputy mayor Damien Rosario said almost 1000 cars were stolen in Casey in 2015-16, with Berwick, Narre Warren and Cranbourne the hardest hit.

“Unfortunately the City of Casey has one of the highest rates of motor vehicle theft in the state and it’s one of the largest crime types Victoria Police responds to in the municipality.

The launch was held at Berwick Motor Group, which has installed $300,000 of security measures such as monitored, motion-sensing cameras after its outlets had been targeted by brazen thieves.

Berwick Motor Group Executive Director Nick Strauss said there was two ways to look at the expense. It was either a cost to the bottom line or a cure of future pain.

He estimated the boosted security had cut vehicle crime at his stores by about 90 per cent.

That’s a ‘key’ message from Operation Bounce Back - a Casey-wide awareness campaign to drive down the annual toll of hundreds of stolen cars and thefts from vehicles.

The campaign’s simple tips are aimed to cut down opportunities for thieves, such as by not leaving keys on a side-table or hanging on a hook by the home door.

Other tips are to lock unattended vehicles at all times, keep valuables in cars out of sight, and lock cars securely in garages at night.

Ray Carroll, executive director of National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council, told a launch on 11 April that Victoria was in the grip of a major increase in vehicle crime.

Mr Carroll said people had become complacent after a long period of decline between 2001-'14.

However, in areas targeted by Bounce Back, vehicle crime had reduced by up to 40 per cent, he said.

The campaign sent a message not only to would-be victims, but also would-be thieves.

“The message about keys is extremely important to get out to the community.

“All cars are now fitted with very effective immobilisers ... (the thieves) want the keys.”

Despite headlines about violent carjackings and home invasions, most car thefts remained opportunistic crimes, he said.

Teenage boy forced into sex

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An 18-year-old Berwick woman has been charged over allegedly forcing a 15-year-old boy into sex with her, then embarking on a stalking campaign of the “terrified” victim for months.

The university student had allegedly forced the boy into his first sexual experience in a park in Berwick in November, a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing heard on 10 April.

At her insistence, the boy later allegedly followed her “list of rules” by sneaking silently into her family home for another encounter in her bedroom.

He was ordered not to speak during the rendezvous, so as not to alert her father, the court heard.

After he tried to break off relations,

the woman allegedly hit him, and stalked and harassed the boy by phone, text and Facebook over several months - once telling him to kill himself.

Several times, she allegedly threatened to Facebook-post a picture of him naked and aroused, as well as to change her profile pic to one of the boy and his family.

The harassment continued after he applied for a full intervention order in February to “stop her coming after him”, informant Senior Constable Rhonda Ebbott told the court.

In approaching police, the boy didn’t want to press charges for the woman’s sexual offences, the court heard.

Sen Const Ebbott told the court she twice contacted the accused in one day,

but when confronted the woman said she’d not contacted the victim.

Two days later, the woman and two men allegedly bashed the boy at a party in Clayton. The woman was dragged away as she was kicking him in the head, the court heard.

“The victim believes she won’t stop breaking the (intervention) order for any reason,” Sen Const Ebbott said.

“She’s shown complete disregard for it already. He’s terrified that she’ll continue to break it.”

The woman was charged with nine counts of sexual penetration of a child under 16, stalking, three counts of breaching an interim intervention order, as well as inciting suicide and affray.

lieved the woman, if released on bail, would put the complainant, his family and friends at risk.

“She took two adult males to that party and assaulted his friends as well as him.

“The victim’s mother and father are at breaking point. They’ve tried numerous times to stop her from contacting him as well as reporting the matter to police.

“I know of a similar case with a male (accused), which led to jail time.”

On the witness stand, the woman’s father said he didn’t know anything about the offending prior to her arrest that day, but pledged to have her closely supervised on bail.

He vowed to have the woman delete her social media accounts, get

a part-time job, hand over her tablet and phone at bedtime and not to have keys to the house that will be locked at night.

Magistrate Doug Bolster, in granting bail, noted the woman’s young age, absence of criminal history, stable residence, her father’s strong vows and lack of serious physical injuries to the boy.

“There’s a risk, but it’s a risk that’s worth being taken.”

The bail conditions include a night curfew, thrice-weekly reporting and a ban on contacting prosecution witnesses.

The woman will next appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a filing hearing on 18 April.

Lost charity status a shock to orphan welfare group

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The founder of a charity in Berwick that donates essential supplies to orphans overseas has slammed the national charity registrar after having their charity status revoked last month.

Founder of the Chance Foundation Mandi Herauville said the revocation of the organisation’s charitable status came as a shock.

“It was with a great deal of sadness and stress that our charity status was suddenly revoked,” she said.

“It caused extremely high levels of stress for our founder and the committee, however there were exceptional circumstances which mitigated the completion of the reporting in the past 12 months.”

The Chance Foundation was one of four Casey based charities among the 590 charities across Australia that had their status as a charitable organisation revoked.

Green Renters Inc in Cranbourne East, the Afghan Women Welfare Foundation in Hampton Park and the El Redentor Evangelical Church in Narre Warren also had their status as a charitable organisation revoked on Tuesday 28 March.

The charities had their statuses revoked by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) after failing to submit their annual reports two years running.

“As the national charity regulator, it is important that we provide the Australian community with accurate and up-to-date information on the Charity Register,” ACNC Commissioner Susan Pascoe said.

“This information is largely collected from the Annual Information Statements required from charities to meet their basic requirements to retain charitable status.

tiple times to submit their outstanding reports.”

Ms Herauville said she wrote to and called the ACNC many times to explain that the charity had experienced hardships recently that had hindered its ability to submit its annual information statement.

“They (the ACNC) stated that these were not considered valid reasons to

grant any extension as they were neither “rare” nor “exceptional”, and with just 30 days noticed they revoked our status, further increasing the stress and worry of our committee.”

The Chance Foundation decided not to reapply for charitable status through the ACNC but will continue to operate.

Ms Herauville said the ACNC has not worked in the best interest of chari-

ties it represents.

“We feel that the ACNC have done us a major disservice with their impersonal attitude and lack of compassion, and that is what lies at the heart of charity work and philanthropy.

“We no longer see our association with them as positive,” she said.

“It’s bureaucracy at its most impersonal and we were dismissed without

much consideration, so we chose, in turn, to dismiss them as an optional governing body for The Chance Foundation Inc.” Green Renters Inc, the Afghan Women Welfare Foundation and the El Redentor Evangelical Church were contacted for comment but did not respond by the time the News went to press.

Cornerstone of ignorance

By Victoria Stone-Meadows All but one Casey Christian church have rejected a reconciliatory statement by Casey Against Racism (CAR), according to CAR spokesman Michael Boss.

Hampton Park Uniting Church is the only church to back the CAR statement that pledges support to the local Muslim community, and Mr Boss is outraged by the response of the 110 Christian churches to the statement- it was either rejected or ignored.

Hampton Park Uniting Church minister Mat Harry said the church council accepted the spirit of the statement.

“We received the statement, we took it to church council that night, our church council looked at it, and approved in about two minutes, saying no brainer,” minister Harry said.

“Our perspective is that entirely irrespective of faith background or cultural background, everybody is created in the image of God and everyone has something to contribute to the community.”

Mr Boss claims he sent a statement for church officials to sign mid last year, calling for members of the Christian community to support the local Muslim community.

Mr Boss also said the statement was written with input and support from local Muslim community leaders who worked closely with Casey Against Racism.

He said he was surprised and disappointed when most Christian churches completely ignored Casey Against Racism’s plea.

“We naively thought, ‘let’s get the Christians to support Muslims, we are all taught to love thy neighbours,’” he said.

“So we sent a very watered down statement, which we thought no one could object to, calling for the Christian churches to stand against racism.”

“It was emailed to every church and followed up with phone calls; every church except Hampton Park Uniting Church ignored it completely or went out of their way to tell me how wrong I am.”

Mr Boss said the reason he sent the statement out to all the churches was to gain support for Casey Against Racism and to encourage the Christian and Muslim communities in Casey to stand together.

“It was my naivety, thinking Jesus said love thy neighbour; it’s not a complex theological

issue,” Mr Boss said.

Minister Harry said he and the Hampton Park Uniting Church agreed with the sentiments put forward by Casey Against Racism but however cautioned that that was a prevalent fear of the unknown that was holding other Christians back.

“We will make space for people to work alongside us and contribute. I think that for some people there is a fear of working with others because of the unknown, however, as Christians we are called to take the steps to get out of our comfort zone and to welcome others,” minister Harry said.

“I think I can say there are other Christian denominations that feel sort of threatened by the ‘other’ and that holds them back,” he said.

“From my and our church’s perspective, it is quite disappointing that other churches aren’t prepared to stand against racism.”

“There are some churches within the City of Casey that view the Christian faith and believe things about the Christian faith that are completely different to the way the Hampton Park Uniting Church would see the priorities of Christian faith,” minister Harry said.

Six other churches were contacted for comment, but did not reply before deadline.

Rebutting racism is Ariana’s role

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Ariana Tugaga has seen firsthand the damage that the media can do to young people.

Ms Tugaga, 18, of Narre Warren, has been selected as a Shout Out speaker for the Centre for Multicultural Youth.

Her primary cause is rebutting racism. She says young people are deeply affected when media coverage targets young people of a particular background.

And she’s seen teachers succumb to the hype.

“It’s often a small minority of that ethnicity doing the wrong thing, but it does damage others from that background.

“I found high school teachers - because of what happened on the front page of the media - would tell some students that they were trouble.

“That they would be the ones that would heckle and would argue in class.

“It shows it’s hard to change the mind of others if they have the perception that we’re bad and do no good.”

In her role, Ms Tugaga is passionate about speaking up in front of schools and community groups, and her pride in her Samoan heritage.

At the same time, she is studying for a science degree with hopes for a career in oncology.

She is shocked how many peers were lost in the process of how to plot their post-high school life, set up a bank account, rent a home or get a car loan.

“It scared me a bit that some didn’t know how they could ap-

“They have found it difficult to find the next step.

“I just thought their parents would tell them all about it.”

Her advice for her friends in this limbo is they shouldn’t be scared to ask for help.

“There are so many opportunities out there. You just need to know how to get there.”

Ms Tugaga’s generation doesn’t face the same work discrimination as her parents when the family migrated from Samoa in 2001, she says.

One difference is due to more diversity joining the ranks of the powerful. There’s more willingness to employ different cultures, Ms Tugaga said.

“I’ve been given opportunities to work at different places.

There’s no type of division between me and the next person.

“The game’s really altered.”

She is under no illusion that racism is hard to eradicate, but has seen promising signs.

Young people of different cultures argue their points in a civil manner on Facebook, and become friends.

She helped organise a multicultural sports day at a Casey secondary college, which led to friendships replacing ethnicbased fights.

“Making a difference in the community doesn’t mean altering everyone’s perspective, but knowing that my passion for ... breaking the chains of racism gets through to people.

“This empowers me to continue my work.”

In a win for local businesses, the State Government has agreed to construct an access road between a service station and a new estate in Cranbourne West.

The planned upgrades to Thompsons Road at the intersection of Westernport Highway would have previously left the BP service station and attached business with very difficult access for drivers.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy visited the service station in February where he met with business and land owner to discuss the planned upgrades to the road.

In February, Fawkner Property Group managing director Owen Lennie, who owns the building the petrol station and other businesses operate from, said it is a no-brainer to include an access road to the petrol station connecting to Whitfield Boulevard.

“What we want is this little road built along with the master plan so our tenants’ businesses are not affected and so we can continue to serve the local area, not just passing trucks,” Mr Lennie said.

Casey Council will be renewing calls for the State Government to extend the Cranbourne rail line following an item of urgent business at the last council meeting.

Councillor Amanda Stapledon raised the item, citing latest statistics showing Cranbourne East as one of the fastest growing suburbs in the country as reason to apply more pressure on the government.

Council passed a motion on Tuesday 4 April to host a briefing with State Government representatives to discuss moving plans to extend the train line to a more immediate timeline.

The latest report from Infrastructure Victoria released in September 2016 outlined plans for a rail extension of the Cranbourne line would be made a priority over the next 15 to 30 years.

“There is great advocacy going on in this space, but it isn’t enough,” Cr Stapledon said. “We need a train line to Cranbourne East, Clyde, and Casey Fields and one day a rail link to Gippsland.”

The first-ever Casey people’s panel also identified the need for the rail line to be extended as a priority.

“People can’t get a car park at any station any more despite 500 spaces at Merinda Park and Lynbrook station; it’ a mess,” Cr Stapledon said.

“The community is ripping its hair out launching very strong advocacy from Cranbourne and beyond, but not getting anywhere.”

Councillor Rex Flannery did raise the question if council had investigated building multi-storey car parking at train stations in the municipality.

However, manager of Transport for the council Paul Hamilton said the cost of building multi-storey parking would outweigh the return.

“The cost of a ground level car park is about $7000 per space with no income other than myki whereas the cost of a deck structure is about $30,000 per space.”

“Unless we start charging for parking, a deck structure is not cost effective, we need to try to make sure people have access to buses and buses are meeting the trains.”

Cr Stapledon also said while it was unfortunate many people had been fined for not parking in the bays at train stations, it was State Government’s responsibility to fix and not council’s.

Postcode 3977, which covers an area from Cannons Creek to Cranbourne North, was home to 89 drivers who were fined for drink driving in the 12 month period with on-thespot fines totalling $42,015.

Statistics from the Department of Justice and Regulation show that the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne are home to the highest number of drink drivers in the state.

Cranbourne topped the list of the five highest suburbs in the state for drink driving residents with Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Dandenong and Pakenham rounding out the top five.

In comparison, during the 201415 financial year Cranbourne was home to 123 drink drivers with the total value of fines in that period coming to $58,421.

While police say it is rare for one person to be fined for drunk driving multiple times, over 2015-16, one Pearcedale driver and one Narre Warren driver were each fined three times.

Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts from the Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol has road safety responsibilities across the south-east suburbs.

He said there were two sides to the statistics.

“This is a good news story and a bad one,” he said.

“These issues go unreported unless they are detected so these figures show the guys are out there doing their jobs.”

Letters The root of the problem After reading the Mayor’s concerns about Casey’s crime rate in the local press, I wish to express my support to him.

Cr Aziz deserves to be congratulated on his bold and very courageous stand against anti-social behaviour.

Quote: “He reiterated his call for a reversal of Endeavour Hills Police Station’s part-time status, tougher sentencing, deportation of dual citizens and an anti-youth gang taskforce of state and federal police.”

While praising Cr Aziz for this, I am of opinion that Casey council is 100 percent wrong in its dealing with the request of Dora Messina, an Endeavour Hills resident, to have two destructive gum trees removed from the nature strip outside her home.

How can the council say that the trees are too healthy to be removed?

Does Casey council value the health of gum trees more highly than the safety of pedestrians and the welfare of residents? It’s a shame!

How dare the city presentation manager David Richardson ask Mrs Messina to supply the council with a geotechnical, plumbing or engineering report when he himself admitted that the council had previously attended and repaired the damaged footpath?

Casey residents believe that those responsible for selecting and planting trees on a nature strip should use common sense.

Likewise, residents of Kendall Drive in Narre Warren have problems caused by huge gum trees that are damaging their homes and properties.

So far, Casey council has refused to address their genuine complaints and grievances. Let’s hope, however, that ward councillors would listen to the residents who are ratepayers, and intervene to get any nuisance trees removed from the nature strip.

Road takes a pounding A few years ago a Casey councillor, who is still on the council, came out with the statement: “The Narre Warren bypass will take traffic off Pound Road.”

That councillor doesn’t know what he is talking about.

Since the Hallam Road roundabout got taken away, traffic on Pound Road increased 100 per cent.

Berwick shoppers have bought the most hot cross buns in the state with Coles Eden Rise recording more hot cross bun sales than any other store in the lead up to Easter.

The high numbers of sales from this store back the findings of consumer group Choice that found Coles Traditional Fruit Hot Cross Buns to be the most popular.

Coles buns beat out other brands in taste and texture when compared to other supermarket brands, grocers and independent bakeries in an independent taste test.

A Clyde North resident may be Australia’s newest millionaire and not even know it after an unregistered Tattslotto ticket snatched the division one prize on Monday 10 April.

Casey’s push on violence

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Council has passed a resolution to perform and audit on how the council is currently addressing family violence across the municipality.

Councillor Rex Flannery raised the motion at a council meeting on Tuesday 4 April where it was widely supported by council members.

The motion adopted by council will see officers provide a report to council within one month that outlines the programs and actions Casey Council undertakes to reduce family violence rates.

This report will inform how Casey Council moves forward with education and support services in the area.

The motion also requires the council to erect banners on the major entry and exit points of the municipality that publicly show Council’s support for anti-family violence campaigns.

When presenting the motion, Cr Flannery was avid the report take into consideration recommendations from the recent Royal Commission into family violence.

“There are 227 recommen-

dations from the Royal Commission that are very important to implement, and all levels of government need to be working through it together to sort that out,” he said.

“I want to have an update on what Casey’s plan is for family violence and what we can do to support the battered women and families affected by this.”

As part of the move towards tackling family violence in City of Casey, Cr Flannery said solutions need to be found through a community, government, and council partnership.

“I’d like to see open forums about family violence and get people there from mental health groups, family violence groups, multicultural societies and leaders and discuss the causes of and solutions to this problem.”

“I want to really get the ball rolling and have these discussions with community groups and sit down and see what their feedback is from their communities and what we as a council can do to help.”

need to tackle alcohol and drugs and be targeted towards multicultural communities that make up the municipality.

“The terms of reference of the Royal Commission did not require it to examine the causes of family violence only the responses and this was a significant lost opportunity to understand the complexities of domestic violence as it affects multicultural communities,” Cr Serey said.

“Not enough is understood in this area and examination of the causes may have given us a better opportunity to understand these issues and customise responses to deal with them.”

Cr Flannery said it’s important that council as well as state and federal governments commit to long term solutions to family violence.

“I am prepared to commit to a reform that’s equally shared between all parties; greens, reds, blues or browns, as long as we all sit down and agree that a 10-year plan is a 10-year plan,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what gender, if you think you can assault anyone, you are wrong.”

The 2017 ‘Card for a Cure’ campaign, started by Deb Bayley when her son Ryan was diagnosed with type one diabetes, has raised $5300 from Coles stores in the South East.

The campaign has expanded in the last four years from one Coles store in Eden Rise to 13 participating stores across the greater Melbourne area.

For the month of March, shoppers were able to purchase a $2 card that raised awareness of the symptoms of juvenile diabetes, with money from the purchase going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

In what is touted an Australian first, a Buddhist Sinhalese radio show has hit Casey’s airwaves and via internet streaming.

Its presenter Gamini Fonseka, of Lynbrook, says the Casey Radio program Sadaham Handa will bring news from the region’s Buddhist temples in Berwick and Keysborough, and interviews with local Buddhist priests.

It will also air community announcements and Buddhist songs.

“My main idea is to educate the people,” the experienced broadcaster, interpreter and Justice of the Peace says.

“For a range of reasons, a lot of people, especially the elderly, can’t go to the temples and talk about Buddhism. So we bring them local Buddhist news.

“We also have a lot of activities in the temples, so we can inform the community about them.”

The show welcomes all listeners who can understand Sinhalese, including the one-time warring Tamil and Sinhalese groups, Mr Fonseka said.

It would aim not to be political but to build bridges. It would have more of a religious and cultural focus, he said.

At Casey Radio, Mr Fonseka also presents an “unbiased” Sri Lankan news-and-views

program Lak Handa as well as Casey Multi-faith Network’s Voice of Faith show.

“There’s some controversial news,” he said of the Lak Handa show.

“This is a very unbiased program. Our listeners have very different political ideas, but we don’t present a political agenda on the radio.”

“Community radio is very useful to the people especially those from ethnic backgrounds.

“It’s very close to my heart.

“If we want to do something for the people, we have to sacrifice our time.”

The show is on Casey Radio on Sundays 5-6am and podcast from the radio’s website.

Shoplifting spree ends with arrest

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A group of Cranbourne seniors have taken charge of the safety of senior citizens across Casey by manning the phones of the Cranbourne Senior Citizens Register at the Cranbourne police station.

Yvonne Hempston and Corol Saggers are among about 10 volunteers who have taken on the responsibility of checking in on about 650 senior citizens in the City of Casey.

Ms Hempston and Ms Saggers have been running the senior citizens register since 2009 and said it was one of the best initiatives they have ever worked on.

“I was looking for something to do after I retired because I had got into a rut at home,” Ms Hempston said.

“So l looked at what was available on the council volunteer list, found out about the register, rang up Ian Lane at the police station and he said to come in, and it just went from there.”

The volunteers of the Senior Citizens Register spend their volunteering time calling registered senior citizens in the area to check on their welfare and provide a friendly chat.

“We keep a check on them and if we can’t contact them we contact the next of kin or emergency contact for that person, and if we can’t contact them, we send the police out to welfare check,” Ms Hempston said.

About a week after Ms Hempston joined the register as a volunteer, Ms Saggers joined up as well.

“I saw it advertised and just decided to join,” Ms Saggers said.

“I find a lot of seniors talk to us instead of their family and it gives them a chance to really open up because everything is confidential.”

Both Ms Saggers and Ms Hempston agreed that while it can be terribly sad speaking to a person whose family doesn’t visit them, it can also be incredibly enriching.

“A lot of the time, their families don’t want to know them, even though if it wasn’t for this person, the whole family wouldn’t be there,” Ms Saggers said.

“They tend to be the forgotten people which is a shame because the stories you hear are incredible - some of our people are so knowledgeable.”

As well as calling the members of the register, the Cranbourne Senior Citizens Register also take outings and trips together.

The outings and trips provide a way to see and experience new things for those who may not be able to otherwise.

The group has recently visited Coolart Wetlands and Homestead on the Mornington Peninsula and have a trip planned to Arthur’s Seat.

Ms Hempston said the volunteers on the register find the program just as rewarding as those that are on the

other side.

“We get as much out of it as our seniors do,” she said.

“It is a pleasure hearing their happy voices.

“Just having that contact improves wellbeing and we love putting out our newsletter that has details about the trip and when the new one will be organised.”

A 40-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to stealing thousands of dollars of clothes and groceries in a series of brazen shop-thefts.

Kim Tatchell had filled two supermarket bags with clothes and make-up valued at more than $1100 during a shoplifting spree at three Fountain Gate shopping-centre outlets on 9 April, a court heard.

She then threatened a pursuing security officer by saying: “Yeah, I’m carrying a f***ing gun.”

Police found Tatchell with the stolen goods at a fast-food restaurant that afternoon.

She was arrested on three outstanding warrants, telling police she stole the clothes to sell them off for money.

The clothes were returned to the stores by police.

Tatchell also stole $177 of groceries by filling up bags from a Dandenong supermarket’s gift-wrapping section in September, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 10 April.

She told police she’d originally sought to steal food but “ended up getting lots of other stuff”.

A similar method was used by her to steal 35 clothing items - valued at $1360 - from a Frankston Myer store on 17 January.

In September, Tatchell was arrested at home while wearing white lingerie shorts she stole from Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre the day before.

The price tag was still attached to the shorts at the time.

Tatchell’s lawyer told the court that the accused sought a treatment-based order for a significant relapse into heroin and amphetamines.

She had previously been on corrections orders in 2009 and 2015.

Magistrate Doug Bolster put Tatchell on a 12-month corrections order with supervision, 75 hours of community work, as well as drug testing and treatment.

He ordered the lingerie shorts to be forfeited to the state.

Kombucha culture brews It starts unappetisingly with a ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’ - or SCOBY - a mushroomlike mass that floats in a jar of brown tea liquid.

It was a trip to Perth that inspired the once-engineer to change his career path, the father of two starting up his tropical and Balinese style landscaping business, Tropical Backyards Creations, two years ago.

“I went to Perth for a holiday and saw the tropical sorts of plants they had over there and I remember coming back and thinking ‘I want to do something like that’,” Daniel said.

“It’s become a passion and something I’ve learnt over the past seven years.”

Stepping into Daniel’s backyard is like being transported to Bali for a dream tropical holiday.

With lush lawns, trickling water features and a Balinese-style hut and bar, Daniel’s garden will leave any visitor in awe.

However, while the Charles’ home wasn’t always a tropical paradise, it was something Daniel always envisaged himself creating.

“It was all native and there were lilly pillies around the whole perimeter of the house ... the grass was a metre high,” Daniel said.

“I didn’t look at the house, I really didn’t care about the house, I was straight out the back door and I saw the potential.”

Now a beautiful jungle of vibrant

greens; splashes of superb pinks, bold reds and summer oranges are littered throughout the yard, found in flowers one would never expect to see thriving in the midst of Melbourne and its fickle climate.

But there’s an art in making the impossible possible.

“I call it more a “tropical style” garden,” Daniel said.

“So you’re growing plants that have the same look (as those in the tropics), but they’re plants that will survive down here in Melbourne.”

Among those Melbourne-proof plants in Daniel’s garden include the Abyssinian Banana, Giant Bird of Paradise, Bungalow Palms, Honey Bush plant and the lively coloured Cordyline which each work to give Daniel’s garden that fresh tropical look.

“It’s a lot of planning - you can’t just do it willy-nilly and plant things anywhere. There’s an art to it, especially with the tropical plants,” Daniel said.

“You’ve got to build your garden.

First you’ve got to know what the sun’s doing, then you have to build your canopy up - so your bigger plants like your palm trees (are planted first) and then build underneath it all.”

In order to create a successful tropical paradise, Daniel stresses the importance of creating a microclimate.

For Melbournians looking for their slice of the tropics, a microclimate is all about creating a tropical climate restricted to the area of their garden. “(The canopy adds to) the microclimate,” Daniel said.

Here’s three tips for growing tropical plants Daniel with one his favorite plants, the abyssinian banana “Melbourne’s weather is shocking.

You get the winter frosts so having that (canopy) keeps it protected and then in summer they’re protected from the sun and in shade.”

While the bulk of Daniel’s garden took roughly six months to establish, he said that although he has slowed down in the past few years he is still continuing to add to his garden of more than 400 plants.

“I’ve crammed a lot in for (the garden size),” Daniel said.

“But I love that fullness. I’ve got water features out there and you hear them running, but you’ve actually got

to go to look for them to see them that’s what it’s about.”

And the best thing about having a tropical garden in Daniel’s eyes?

“You can just enjoy it. Sitting around with all the water features running and the lights going, on a nice balmy night you sit out there and it’s relaxing - it’s awesome,” Daniel said.

“And the kids love it. You come home and it’s like you’re in Bali, you’re not in the middle of Berwick.”

3. Choose the right plants for the area. Daniel said a common mistake tropical gardeners make is planting plants in the wrong spot.

POLICIES WILL HEAT AN ALREADY BOILING MARKET HOME BUYERS

GUIDE MAT SUCKLING DIRECTOR OF RMS HOMES IDEALLY, I would have begun my first formal guide like this; the hows, whys, whats, wheres and whos of home buying! Considering the issues facing home buyers, I believe it pertinent to discuss some other topics which are affecting home buyers.

Affordability. It is the enemy of first, second, and third home buyers. Most people across Melbourne are finding their money is getting them less than what it used to.

In order to assist those struggling to save enough for deposits lobby groups, consumer groups and government representatives are considering possible solutions to the ‘affordability crisis’.

I believe the responses from government are reactionary and not well thought through.

To be honest, I think they will continue to heat an already boiling market.

I will explain why they are not only ineffective, but also dangerous to the economy.

Stamp duty – as of 1 July, all first home buyers, whether buying an established home or a house and land package (to the value of $600,000) will not have to pay stamp duty.

Previously, first home buyers received a 50 per cent reduction.

The excitement generated has led to some of our competitors using it as motivation in their latest marketing. Less stamp duty equals less upfront costs for a home buyer; that has to be good, right? I believe it will continue to drive up prices, especially land prices.

The basic rules of economics are; •฀ When supply is high – demand is low (in this case, prices go down).

When supply is low – demand is high (in this case, prices go up).

This stamp duty policy is going to encourage developers to raise land prices, not drop them, as demand for land is going to surge beyond its already ridiculous levels.

Anyone who has been shopping for affordable land across Melbourne is finding it difficult, with most blocks having title dates of mid to late 2018!

With wage growth not matching inflation, the issue of serviceability becomes an issue when land prices are increasing at the rate they are currently. What is the point of buying a block of land at X dollars, when you won’t be able to afford the house you want due to banks’ serviceability requirements!

Home start finance initiatives (government sponsored lending programs) have been a successful option for low deposit home buyers in both South Australia and Western Australia.

They provide people wanting to buy a home who have the capacity to service the repayments an opportunity to purchase via sharing an equity stake with the buyer.

In order to be successful these programs rely heavily on the property value increasing, allowing the government sponsored program to recoup their monies at a profit when the home is sold.

The buyer also pays a portion of their home loan repayment in interest to the government sponsored lender. I can hear many of you say “With the expenses I have, it is so hard to save a deposit. Mat, you are supposed to help us home buyers, why are you so negative when it comes to a program such as this?”

There are two things we need to observe about Western Australia and South Australia.

Both economies are in need of a kick start – unemployment in South Australia is high, and Western Australia is still recovering from the end of the mining boom. House prices in Western Australia have actually gone down •฀

in the past 18 months, leading it to become the most affordable state for first home buyers!

The risk of the property market heating in these states is low – these initiatives stimulate the construction and development economy. We don’t have these issues in Melbourne. And like the stamp duty exemption, such a government incentivised program will only encourage developers to raise prices if more people are able to purchase property!

The global financial crisis that started in America was caused by two things; 1. Government sponsored lending programs; and 2. Reckless bank policies which allowed low income earners with zero deposits to buy houses they couldn’t afford.

The interference of government on financial policy creates more harm than good. It encourages developers to be greedy.

Unfortunately, it is often that the under-privileged are misled and taken advantage of. Not everyone can afford mortgage repayments, whether it is due to existing credit circumstances or current work situation (part-time, casual or made redundant).

There is a minimum standard that must be adhered to before a home buyer can be eligible to purchase a home. At RMS, we call it being financially fit. Via our numerous home buyer programs, we support all types of buyers from all types of circumstances get in a position where they become financially ‘fit’ to meet the demands of the lending requirements.

So, after all that doom and gloom, do I have a solution to the affordability problem?

1. The first home owners grant and stamp duty concessions should be means tested. The degree to which buyers are eligible for these grants and concessions should be tested on a case by case basis. It is unfair and a waste of tax payer dollars for

someone who already has a sizeable deposit (more than 10 per cent or has the capacity via mum and dad) to receive the same concession as someone who has a five per cent deposit.

2. Place rules on developers pre-releasing land, and price cap land lots in greenfield land estates. Developers can’t pre-release stock quick enough to the market.

Some estates are requiring depositors to register for ballots that may get them a block of land that is over 12 months away from title! Anyone lucky enough to receive a block avoids the dreaded ballot for the next stage, where usually prices will continue to rise only to live 50 metres down the road from the first release of land.

This is driven by expression of interest and the amount of registered buyers. The scarcity of land availability driven by demand will only continue to drive prices up.

If developers are required to release the bulk of their land within a certain timeframe when titles are due, we will see more stock on the market which will ideally give buyers freedom of choice. This freedom of choice will cool demand (as a result of a greater supply) and provide price relief for buyers looking for house and land packages.

3. Make building easier! Governments make it hard for developers to subdivide land, and for builders to build on land. The regulations and codes that must be followed and adhered to slow land releases and building approvals. It has never been harder to buy and build homes.

The government (both local, state and federal) can incentivise buyers by making the development and building process easier – deregulate!

This will allow quicker land releases, quicker building approvals, and less holding costs for both developers, builders and buyers. The only firms that get rich from lag times are government departments and banks!

Thursday 6 April saw more than 30 youngsters attend the library to test out their building skills for the Lego in the Library Day. Youth Services librarian at Cranbourne, Sarah Litchfield, said the school holiday events are always a hit with the kids.

“They are very popular,” she said.

“The kids are very happy when they leave and they keep coming back, so we must be doing something right.”

The school holiday activities at Cranbourne Library continued with an ‘Under the Sea’ Storytime spectacular on Saturday 8 April.

Monday and Wednesday were also full of fun with an appearance

by Paul “the music man” Jamieson and a games in the library day.

Good Evans, a pavilion!

By David Nagel When it comes to sporting clubs - it’s just about the ultimate accolade really!

Being granted life membership of a club or organisation is one thing, but having your name adorn a pavilion or building is a rare and exquisite acknowledgement of a life-time of commitment to the cause.

Unlike a life-member’s honour board - only one name will ever hang from the pavilion at Beaconsfield.

Peter Evans - life-member, past president, volunteer and benefactor - received that ultimate accolade at a special ceremony held at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday.

Current-day president Troy Robinson had the honour of making the announcement.

“We’re into year five of our journey here at Holm Park and some great history has been held at the club over the years, at different venues, in different competitions, dating back to 1890, our inaugural game against Cranbourne,” Robinson told a hushed crowd.

“It’s important that our players, our group, our community, understand and embrace our history and realise that it’s a big part of the future. Today is one of those milestone days that we will be able to put in the history books, one that we will be able to teach our kids, friends and our supporters about as we evolve.

“I have the great honour today of having the ability to name our pavilion after one of our greats. Today it gives me the great pleasure in announcing that the pavilion here at Holm Park will now be known as the Peter Evans Pavilion.”

A spontaneous round of applause greeted the announcement, Evans shocked and overawed at the magnitude of the honour. He wiped tears from his eyes before making an emotional speech, his voice breaking as he gave a brief insight into his special relationship with the club.

A builder by trade, Peter Evans started his association with the club in 1980 as team manager for son Simon’s junior side. He served on the

He was made a life member in 1997.

But his greatest contribution to the club has been as a loyal sponsor and supporter, completing building works to the old rooms at Perc Allison Oval before playing a pivotal role in the move to Holm Park Road.

Many at the club are adamant that without his support and financial backing, the move to Holm Park Road may never have eventuated.

Past president John Airdrie paid his respects.

“Peter built the extension on the old rooms at Perc Allison so has had a major, major influence on all the building infrastructure at the club,” Airdrie said.

“We’re very proud of him. He’s an unassuming, quiet, in the background sort of guy, but he deserves every credit he gets, a super person, a super individual who has put his money up to help this club to be what it is today.”

Evans then spoke to the Gazette about the honour.

“I’m bloody surprised, I can tell you that,” he began.

“I was told we were coming here to honour Charlie (Doro) and then they spring this on me, what a great honour.

I’m just so surprised, unbelievable.

"You don’t think about those sorts

of things when you’re doing it, the main thing was to have the best pavilion in the shire and to provide something for everyone to use. It will be ongoing and it will be great.”

So what does the club mean to him?

“For the last 35 to 40 years it’s been a massive part of my life, as president, all the work you put in, and it all started with my young bloke coming down for a kick when he was eight. He’s 44 or something now and I’m still here.

“It’s just been such a welcoming club. I came down to watch a game of football one day, got introduced to the locals and I thought how good is this. From that this has all happened, they didn’t know me from a bar of soap and it’s been one happy journey ever since.”

Evans then heaped praise on his wife Iris for her support.

“These things don’t happen unless your wife allows you to come down and get involved in the first place,” he said.

“Iris has backed me all the way, and years ago the kids would be down here playing while she was working in the canteen. It’s been fantastic for the family.

"I’m so honoured; flabbergasted actually; it really has made my day. I can’t believe it.”

Robinson summed up the feeling in the room with his final words.

“The club is forever grateful for the involvement of both Peter and Iris Evans.”

Tigersharks’ young talent heads to nationals

By Nick Creely The 2017 Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Swimming Championships over Easter provide the perfect opportunity for the Casey Tigersharks to show off the talent that has been developing for several years.

The competition, which will be held at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane from 16 April to 23 April, features some of the country’s most talented young swimmers.

It’s an exciting young team, with Kyle Young, Jy Macgregor, Shaun Banzon, Tyson Caddy, Rebecca Henderson and Rachel Emmett to take to the pool in search of glory.

The Tigersharks are well known to produce champions, with Olympian Josh Beaver, Para Pan Pacific representative

Eli Cole, Australian representative Matson Lawson and Commonwealth Games representative Mitchell Pratt all coming through their program.

Tigersharks Head Coach Craig Albery, who has been with the team for twelve months, is a highly rated coach of junior athletes, and said that it’s a great opportunity to put into action what they’ve been preparing for.

“They’ve had a year of preparation they virtually start preparing two weeks after the last nationals - in between there obviously there are other meets and championships, but the swimmers see it as the pinnacle competition of the year,” he said.

The team, which is going through a transitional phase, has seen several young swimmers raise some eyebrows so far this year, something Albery believes will make

the organisation even stronger in the future.

“We are in a big re-development phase at the moment and what has been really pleasing is to have several of our younger and less experienced swimmers post times within two seconds of the national standard,” he said.

“That of course, is very exciting for them and will hopefully see us in a better position as an organisation this time next year.”

The clubs Vice-President Doug Vohs praised the group of young swimmers who have the capacity to do great things in the competition.

“We are really proud of the swimmers who have qualified for this year’s Nationals in Brisbane,” he said.

“They have all worked really hard throughout the year.”

Stingrays bounce back and hold on TAC CUP REVIEW - ROUND 3 Not even a stunning resurgence in the second-half was enough to hand the GWV Rebels a shock victory, with the Dandenong Stingrays holding on for dear life to bank a 20-point win on Saturday.

In what was a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde game for the Rays, a quick-start proved crucial and highlighted the amount of talent embedded on their list.

With last week’s embarrassing drubbing on their minds, the Rays played like a team possessed early, running all over a shell-shocked Rebels side, jumping to a 41-point lead at quarter-time.

Incredibly, the Rays kicked 8.0 in the first-quarter, including some absolute ripping goals and electrifying passages of play.

It was more of the same in the second-quarter, with the Rays extending their ominous lead to 54, virtually beyond reach for the Rebels.

But something changed immediately after the siren sounded to begin a second-half most expected to be a cake-walk for the Rays.

The rain started pelting down, and with a 54-point advantage a comeback was almost impossible.

But the Rebels turned back the

clock on a now stunned Stingrays defence, peppering the goals to kick 6.4 to just 2.0 for the quarter, reeling the margin back to a gettable but still difficult 26-point buffer.

And despite throwing every little bit of effort into it, the Rays defense, without its regular skipper and defensive general Oscar Clavarino, stood firm and relented against a barrage of attacks.

But the second-half fadeout would be of concern to the coaching staff, who has seen the side play some ordinary quarters of football so far.

Mitch Cotter was once again outstanding the Rays, while Mason DeWit found some form and Jai Nanscawen impressed with his exceptional goalsense.

In a team missing virtually its entire leadership group in Tom De Koning, Hunter Clark, Oscar Clavarino and Luke Davies-Uniacke, the Rays were able to unearth some of their more inexperienced players.

But Stingrays Assistant Coach Nick Cox was pleased that the group walked away with the win, although he concedes that the second-half was a concern that they will need to address.

“We weren’t very happy with our second-half - the first half was as good as we’ve ever played. All the things we put into place over the summer worked really well, but for some reason after half-time we stopped - full credit to

them, when the rain came down in the second-half they showed us how to play wet weather footy,” he said.

“At the moment, that inconsistency is there - we did change things around, but it is a development program so we tried some kids in different positions.

“There are some things we need to work on before we play Sandringham that’s for sure.”

Cox was full of praise for a lot of the younger kids who stood up admirably in the spot of almost half-a-dozen of their top-line players who were unavailable, and was also happy with the response after an embarrassing defeat against Geelong the week prior.

“There was a few that stood up 17-year-old Bailey Williams was outstanding kicking three goals, Mitch Cotter was great and he has probably been our most consistent player so far this year, and Mason DeWit was superb,” he said.

“We didn’t think our structures fell down against Geelong, they were just bigger and stronger but our effort was poor.

“Our effort was the big thing we focused on this week - if we get beaten by a bigger and better opponent so be it, but the effort needs to be there.”

The TAC Cup will not be in action next week, but the Rays will return to the field on 22 April with a crucial clash against Sandringham Dragons at Frankston Oval.

Probe call after onfield clash

In an ironic twist, the Berwick Football Club has requested an investigation into an incident that took place during the second quarter of Saturday’s grand final rematch against Cranbourne.

The alleged incident, which left star-recruit James Magner with a bloodied right eye and forced to leave the field of play, occurred during a collision between Magner and Cranbourne midfielder Luke Bee-Hugo.

The irony of Berwick’s request is that Cranbourne followed the same path after an incident between Berwick skipper Madi Andrews and Cranbourne midfielder Mat Fletcher during the corresponding clash at the same venue last year.

Andrews was brought before the tribunal and suspended for four matches.

Berwick launched an appeal with the AFL Victoria Country Appeal Board and had the decision overturned, allowing Andrews to play in last year’s finals series.

Berwick president Glenn Gambetta confirmed the club had made formal contact with the league and requested an investigation, a process which requires a $500 surety.

“I don’t want to play this out in the media but what I can say is that we have sent a formal letter to the league and have requested an investigation into an incident that took place on Saturday against Cranbourne,” Gambetta said.

“There will be no further comment from the club at this stage.”

Magner had won a one-onone contest on Berwick’s half-

forward line - the scoreboard half-forward flank at Edwin Flack Reserve - and had just fired off a handball when the alleged collision occurred.

Magner was forced to his knees by the impact but recovered sufficiently to make his way from the ground under his own steam.

SEFNL will now request an investigation into the incident which will need to be completed inside the mandatory 21 days by investigation officer assigned to the case. The investigation officer will then make his recommendations to SEFNL. If a tribunal appearance is recommended, the tribunal needs to take place within nine days, with at least 48 hours’ notice given to the members of the tribunal - who only sit on either Tuesday or Wednesday nights.

Some room for improvement

By David Nagel An eerie feeling descended upon the South East Football Netball League on Saturday - and we’re not just talking about the wild electrical storm that cut short all three matches and plunged daylight into darkness.

The real eeriness was felt by Cranbourne, who had a strange and frightening experience of its own at the hands of Berwick going down by 47 points at Edwin Flack Reserve.

The Wickers looked every inch the team that took all before it in 2015, combining a brutally sound defensive unit with a flexible front half to clinically pull apart a Cranbourne unit lacking in inspiration and cohesion.

Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman drew on the words of his premiershipwinning mentor from Noble Park to describe the significance of the victory.

“As the great Mick Fogarty used to say when I was at Noble Park, ‘it’s only round two and we’ve done nothing yet,” Kemperman said, proving he did listen to his former leader.

“As coach, that’s the message to sell

to the players, we’ve done nothing yet, and it’s easy because it’s true. It’s important to bank the wins early, but it’s also a bit premature to be getting too excited. I think we’ve still got a lot of areas to improve on and I’d be disappointed if the players weren’t thinking the same thing.”

Kicking with the aid of a firm breeze, Berwick was all over the Eagles in the first term. Skipper Madi Andrews was dynamite, kicking the first two goals of the match inside five minutes, leading a midfield brigade of Ash Smith, Bryce Rutherford, Michael Harold and Jimmy Magner into a period of dominance.

Andrews, Smith and Rutherford were ball-magnets in the first term, sharking the taps of Cranbourne ruckman Michael Boland who was getting first touch at the ball. Ty Ellison and Brad Bigaignon answered for the Eagles before two goals to Bob Kemperman and another to Magner gave the Wickers a well-deserved 20-point lead at quarter time.

But it was in the second quarter

where the Wickers’ defensive press really did kick into gear.

Players like Michael Riseley, Michael Johnson, a rejuvenated Riley Heddles, Jayden Joyce and Luke Sheppard set up a defensive wall that the Eagles were unable to penetrate. The Wickers kicked 3.1 to 0.3 to take an unassailable six-goal lead into half time.

The Wickers wasted opportunities, kicking 2.6 to 1.2 in the third quarter, before a gathering storm brought a close to play roughly 10 minutes into the final term.

Tim Gunn and Bob Kemperman kicked two each as permanent forwards while Andrews, Rutherford and Magner -who had an absorbing duel with Brandon Osborne when forwardkicked two each from the midfield.

Ellison was the only multiple contributor for the Eagles, while Osborne was joined by Stu Morrish, Dylan Cavalot and Boland on a restricted list of best players.

The Eagles forged ahead at each change, putting the Seagulls to the sword and will now have high expectations as they look to engage in their sixth consecutive finals series.

Lachie Modica and Jake Bowd were impressive for the winners while Aisakie O’Hailpin was clearly the Seagulls best performer in the ruck.

By David Nagel Tooradin has emerged as the earlyseason challenger to Narre Warren after a commanding 50-33 win over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve.

Leading 10-9, Beaconsfield coach Simon O’Shanassy made just the one change at quarter time, replacing Ash Gill with Rylee Nelson in wing attack, in stark contrast to Tooradin’s Kelly Andrews who swung the changes at the first break.

Andrews moved Sara Duncan from wing defence to centre, in an attempt to slow down the impact and drive of Beaconsfield centre Jasmine Jones, while the fresh legs of Jess Maher filled the wing defence void with ease.

The Gulls turned a one-goal deficit at the first break into a six-goal advantage by half time. Their 1710 quarter was propelled by Ebony Dolan (GK) and Bec Kinna (GD) at the defensive end, through Jess Maher (WD), Duncan (C) and Emma Iacovou (WA) through the midcourt, and finished off in style by the two goalers.

Not all was lost for the Eagles who got more game time into defenders Taylah Jencke and Britnee Tyers and did outscore the Seagulls in the first term. Dani Cameron (GK) tried hard as usual for the Eagles, while Bianca Sanzaro (GS) scored 27 goals despite a quiet third quarter.

Both teams face tough assignments after Easter, with the Eagles taking on back-to-back champions Narre Warren and Tooradin taking the tricky trip to Casey Fields to take on Cranbourne.

Narre Warren’s premiership defence has started brightly, the Magpies proving far too strong for ROC, winning 54-29 at Starling Road.

Playing their first game for the season in windy conditions didn’t stop the Magpies from producing a fine display, with a 15-6 first quarter showing the champs had lost none of their magic.

A stormy ending FFV - SOCCER WRAP STATE-LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH-EAST The Casey Comets match versus Morwell was abandoned at the half-time break when the match official Hari Milas deemed the lightning storm was too much of a risk to the players for the game to continue.

Milas’s decision proved to be spot on as the storm’s intensity increased soon after.

The game started in bright sunshine with both teams trying to control the middle of the park but it took until the 25th minute for the visitors to make the breakthrough when against the run of play Morwell striker Paul Kuol latched on to a through ball and just made contact before the Comets advancing keeper Faraz Zenoozi could clear it and lobbed it over him and into the goal.

This setback seemed to spur the Comets on and in the 35th minute Andrew Stubley got his head on to a Allando Matheson chip to nod it past Liam Anderson into the Morwell goal.

The Comets should have gone ahead just before half-time but Anderson had a great stop from a Ryan Hughes effort from just outside the area.

The Reserves won again in a tight tussle with Morwell and it took a penalty from Jack Duffield in the 78th minute to secure the three points.

It was a welcome return for Goalkeeper Josh Prins and he was happy to keep a clean sheet.

The match saw the return of Liam Ryan after a long term injury and he commented that it was really hard going on the park due to the 26 degree heat.

The senior match will be replayed in full in June on the first catch-up round of the season.

With no game next week due to the Easter break, the next match is away to Langwarrin at Lawton Park on 22 April.

STATE-LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH-EAST Berwick City continued its unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought 1-1 draw at home against Frankston Pines.

Berwick had most of the possession but could not make it count against a resilient and physical Frankston defence.

Early in the second half and against the run of play the away team pounced on a defensive mistake by Berwick to score an easy goal.

In the third minute of injury time and with the opposition supporters encouraging the referee to blow the final whistle, Berwick received a free kick in its half and pushed everyone forward one last time.

STATE-LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Pakenham United has drawn 2-2 with Chelsea FC in an entertaining contest at IYU Recreation Reserve, with United breaking into the top-four.

Bunyip has been smashed 2-6 against Old Mentonians at Bunyip, but the Strikers enjoyed a more positive second-half, but still sit bottom-of-the-ladder.

The Casey Panthers and Somerville Eagles were unable to get on the park due to bad weather, with no play getting underway at Prospect Hill.

Drouin has been handed a pretty big lesson, going down 0-8 to the premiership favourites Sandown Lions at Ross Reserve.

In other matches, White Star Dandenong and Lyndale were washed out and the Dandenong Warriors toppled Rowville 4-1.

All washed-out games across the state leagues will be replayed at a later date throughout the year.

It was a special night of celebration for all involved in the DDCA, with four legends of the association inducted into the Hall of Fame at the senior presentation evening.

Richard Hammond (HallamKalora Park), Peter Mathison (Springvale South), Cameron McDonnell (Berwick) and Craig Slocombe (Springvale) were all recognised for their outstanding careers, with McDonnell in particular, one of the great cricketers the DDCA has produced.

James Pattinson and Brendan Rose have both been recognised for their outstanding seasons with selection in the Victorian Premier Cricket Team of the Year.

At the annual Ryder Medal presentation on Friday 7 April at Crown Palladium, Pattinson and Rose were both selected for the very first time.

Pattinson had an extraordinary year - back from major injuries that have derailed him for several years, plundering 560 runs from just 10 innings, while also taking 18 wickets at an average of 11.17.

He also came third in the Ryder Medal despite playing very little cricket after Christmas due to Victorian duties.

Rose was one of the competition’s biggest improvers, taking a brilliant 39 wickets for the season and almost topping the wicket-tally across the competition.

Cute, cheap and functional

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring One of my frequently voiced gripes about design is that fashion too often is allowed to override function.

We get cars that look stunning, but have cramped interiors, or too little ground clearance, or silly little boots.

How a car as cute and fascinating in its style as the Suzuki Ignis can be both fashionable and functional brings a big smile to my face.

Just look at that pert nose, fascinating tail with the stylised Suzuki badge in the C-pillars and interesting interior then jump inside one at a local Suzuki dealer and be amazed at the amount of space it provides.

It’s not really a small car, or a small SUV, rather a brilliant crossover between the two.

The entry level GL manual comes to market at $15,990, the CVT $16,990, while the GLX, CVT only, tops out the range at $18,990. The latter was our test car. On-road costs need to be added to these prices.

Ignis GLX has 16-inch alloy wheels, up from the GL’s 15s, automatic LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, keyless entry and push start, automatic airconditioning and privacy rear glass.

We love the shape, and the customisation it cries out for. Colours, including two-tone combinations, give plenty of chances to personalise.

You can also customise the grille trim and centre garnish, choose wheel decals, side stripes and the C-pillar gill slits. Even the door mirrors and foglights can get their own personality.

The Ignis’ cabin can also be personalised with the colour choices on the seat trim, centre console, transmission surrounds, grab handles on the doors, air vents.

Interestingly the previous Ignis, which was last sold in Australia in 2005, had a fair bit of Australian engineering input.

This time around, although our local guys and gals were part of the global team, most of the work was done by Japan.

Standard across the range are 7.0inch infotainment touch screen for satellite navigation and rear-view camera, as well as access to audio, aux inputs, USB and SD card, Bluetooth and smartphone connection to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink.

The leather trimmed three-spoke steering wheel has audio and cruise control buttons, plus hands-free phone use.

Safety is five-star with dual front, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability program, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist.

Somewhat illogically, CVT adds a hill holder.

does the higher than average height of the Ignis.

While 60 kilowatts and 120 Newton metres aren’t what you would call big

numbers the Ignis weighs in at just 820 kg so performs pretty well.

The CVT can be irritating at time in the way it sounds, but there’s no denying its efficiency. Serious hills can tax the powertrain at times, but the little car manages to do its best.

For those who are planning to carry four large adults, and that’s possible despite the Suzuki’s apparently diminutive dimensions, it might be an idea to get all four aboard and find a steep hill for the private pre-purchase road test.

Comfort is pretty good on most roads and certainly on motorways. But rough roads can bounce things about at times.

Handling is nimble and competent and there’s the sort of pleasure offered in small light cars that’s seldom there in large ones.

Fuel consumption was often below five litres per 100 kilometres on easypaced road, and we seldom saw more than seven litres per 100 even when we worked the little Suzy hard in boring suburban areas.

Fashion and function in the one package - love it - and the most expensive Suzuki Ignis will be sitting in your garage with some change from $20,000 in your pocket.
