Golden Honey Popcorn, sweet Ingredients: 90g Australian butter, chopped 1/3 cup caster sugar 1 tablespoon honey 4 cups plain popcorn 1/4 cup chopped roasted peanuts (optional) 24-27 small solid chocolate eggs or 8-9 medium eggs, to garnish Method: Bring butter, sugar and honey to the boil in a saucepan over a moderate heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Pour mixture over the combined popcorn and nuts and mix gently but thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into paper caselined muffin trays and make a small well in the centre, to resemble a nest.

Bake at 150?C for 10 minutes or until golden. Cool before placing chocolate eggs in the centre of each and storing in an airtight container until required.

The Easter weekend is fast approaching, and many people will hit the open roads to experience quality time with family and friends.

However, this can also be a dangerous time of the year, with the overall road toll in 2016 increasing by 8 per cent throughout Australia and, worryingly, road deaths in the 17 to 25 years age group escalating 17 per cent.

People make longer journeys than usual at this time of the year, and traffic numbers significantly increase on major roads.

Driving without distraction is the key to arriving and returning safely from those holidays.

So far in 2017, 63 lives have

been lost on Victorian roads.

That figure is down 20.3 per cent in the previous year.

Though, Victoria Police will no doubt be looking for a better display from drivers than last year, where more than 6000 offences were detected state-wide during a five-day campaign.

Police recorded 700 unlicensed, disqualified or suspended drivers on the roads.

Also, 330 people were caught speeding, 1089 were stopped while driving unregistered cars, 314 were spotted using mobile phones while at the wheel, and 301 were caught not wearing seatbelts.

Police said driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol was rife, with 280 people testing positive for drugs.

Meanwhile, Driver Reviver locations operate throughout the year during major public holiday long weekends.

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) advises if you’re already behind the wheel when you start to feel drowsy, the best remedy is to pull-over and have a 15-minute powernap.

So, find a Driver Reviver Pit Stop, take a break, have a cuppa and take 40 winks if you need them.

This Easter, remember to be courteous and flexible while sharing the road with others.

Allow for increased time for the journey, and scheduling frequent breaks can help drivers to stay safe during these highpressure periods.

IGA doubles charity

The Belgrave South IGA will be just one of many local organisations digging that little bit deeper this year for the annual Good Friday Appeal.

To help raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital in 2017, the IGA store will play host to local CFA brigade members, including from Belgrave Heights and Belgrave South units, who will be rattling their tins throughout the day.

The local supermarket and adjacent

service station will be among the only convenience stores open in the hills on Good Friday.

Though, store manager Simon Hartley, from IGA Belgrave South, said they wanted to use this special day to give back to their community.

“Many people need their bread and milk daily, so I think people still enjoy the convenience of having something open,” he said.

“But we’d like to give something back to the community as well.

“It’s just a great cause, and we’re more than happy to lend a helping hand.

The local CFA will be collecting donations at the front of the supermarket for most of the day.

However, when the CFA aren’t rattling their tins, there will be a container inside the supermarket where people can donate.

As an added bonus for the Good Friday Appeal, the local IGA will double the money that is raised inside the supermarket.

Unplug for some quality family time

By Peter Douglas Easter is the perfect time for children to take a break from technology and spend some quality time with their family.

Child psychologist Nicole Pierotti said school holidays were the perfect opportunity to press ‘re-set’, take some time away from technology and get back to basics with your kids.

“This Easter holidays is the perfect opportunity to take the time to ‘unplug’ your kids from their devices and reconnect as a family,” she said.

“Technology has irreversibly altered childhood as we know it.

“It has changed the way children think, play, communicate and learn.

“In clinics, in homes, in schools around the world, parents, teachers and children are learning to live with the consequences.”

The problem, she said, is not technology itself, but its overuse.

Nicole said this was likely to have far reaching effects on our children as they grew.

Australia’s Physical Activity Recommendations suggest that children aged 5-18 accumulate no more than two hours of screen time per day and children under the age of two do not spend any time viewing TV or other electronic media.

Top tips to connect with your kids this school holidays: Unplug: unplug or put time limits on screen time and include all devices to encourage other activities to help you connect as a family.

Back to basics: craft activities can be very therapeutic for children. Have pens and pencils on hand for creative writing, drawing and colouring-in.

Easter is a great time for craft for young children. Make an Easter Bonnet, basket or decorate hard-boiled eggs. Cut out magazine pictures, or colour in a line drawing.

Chill-out time: unplugging from technology provides time to wind down. This includes playing a musical instrument, reading a real book, chatting to family and creative activities. Even a little bit of ‘boredom’ can be a good thing as it allows time for creative thought. Mulling things over can spark children’s imaginations and gives them a chance to get away from the external information overload that can happen in the external world and reconnect to their internal world.

Easter treat, fun at The Cuckoo When the Easter Bunny comes to town, double the fun with a visit to the Cuckoo Restaurant on Easter Sunday.

Kids just love the Easter Bunny, and his appearance is followed by a fun, family friendly floorshow like only the Cuckoo can do.

Front-of-house supervisor, Jessie Toogood, recalled the fun when the Easter Bunny last visited the Cuckoo.

“It’s a laugh to watch the kids hug him and grab his legs when he’s handing out Easter eggs,” Jessie said.

Restaurant owner, Karin Koeppen, said; “We always like to give something a little special for the children each year”.

Karin, now in her eighties, having been proprietor at the Cuckoo for nearly 60 years, has personally been organising little decorated baskets of chocolate eggs to place around the buffet.

Let someone else do the catering this year and enjoy the ease of a bountiful buffet with something for everyone.

The buffet itself will include special seafood dishes created by head chef Steve Bless including Cold Salmon Terrine, Chilled Sweet and Sour Fish, Smoked Salmon, Eel and Trout - and that’s just the entrees.

The delicious menu will have the kids coming back for more.

Dig a little deeper this Friday

By Peter Douglas Firefighters from across the Dandenong Ranges will be shaking tins to collect donations for the Good Friday Appeal this Friday 14 April.

Residents in Upwey, Selby, Belgrave and Belgrave South, who see fire trucks driving through their streets, are urged to dig deep and donate.

Meanwhile, there will be plenty of opportunities to lend a hand, if you can.

Residents across the state are expected to come together on Friday 14 April to raise much-needed funds for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Across Victoria and beyond, thousands of volunteers and supporters will collect donations and host fund-raising activities, including Easter egg hunts, sausage sizzles, fun runs, dances and auctions.

Just some of the events locally include at the Sherbrooke Archers Good Friday Shoot, which will take place between 9am and 5pm.

This is family fun with a difference; enjoy an archery shoot with the family.

Activities will be held throughout the day, with proceeds to support the Good Friday Appeal.

Bakery spreading its wings Inside, the bakery has a friendly and relaxing vibe.

It boasts an open-seating plan, plenty of tables, a play area for kids and couches for the travel-weary.

Kylie says the bakery sells a great range of products, including the classics that have made it so renowned in the area.

“We sell various pies, our famous bee stings and vanilla slice,” she said.

Whether you’re up for the traditional Easter egg hunt with the children, or looking to take in the beautiful surrounds, it won’t take much to plan a great day out.

High on the to-do list for the children will be the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Emerald Lake Park.

Holistic medical care The Emerald Medical Centre opened to the hills community amid much fanfare and celebration on Saturday 8 April.

The multi-faceted facility presents a new era to primary and allied health care within the region, with the purpose-built building designed to allow a team-based, holistic approach to patient care.

The building is also designed to facilitate stronger relationships between medical staff and essential community assets such as local schools and emergency services.

To celebrate the occasion, a host of special guests helped create a conducive atmosphere.

These included Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley, La Trobe MP Jason Wood, Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen and Cardinia Shire Citizen of the Year, Wayne Collins.

Centre director, Dr George Somers, told the ‘Mail’ the opening represented a step towards modern health care for the Emerald hills district. “Thirty years ago somebody would come to you with a sore knee but they may’ve had different issues ... blood pressure, heart disease, depression,� he said. “The 10 minutes you used to give them as a doctor to patient no longer works. “The patient may need a team ap-

proach, including a psychologist or dietitian. “This building is purpose-built, so we can have teams working on individual patients, or groups of patients. “We can now provide all services locally, under the one roof.�

The medical centre provides most of the nursing and GP services to the region, with the new extension enabling them to build expanded new teams, including allied health and medical specialists.

The two-storey, 16-bed facility also includes a large multi-purpose room, which community groups and health professionals can use to hold meetings or host presentations.

Like much of the thought behind the building, this represents just an-

other way the medical centre can stay connected with the Emerald and hills communities.

This includes developing a stronger relationship with Emerald Secondary College, where they will have doctors and nurses on site each week.

Dr Somers said planning for the design started five years ago, when they submitted an ultimately failed plan to Cardinia Shire Council.

But he said it was essential they persisted after the initial setback. “Two years ago - instead of saying it would be nice to have a bigger building - it really had to happen,� he said. “So, we got serious and re-submitted.�

Dr Somers said the result would speak for itself.

Keep a lookout The Bunjil lookout trail will be opened at the Birdsland Reserve at Belgrave South at the Minibeasts Festival on Sunday 23 April.

The new trail starts at the main car park and leads to the highest point at the reserve, where walkers can enjoy city skyline views and take in the surrounding hills.

Council bushland management officer, Gavin Prentice, said the $40,000 trail was fully funded by council’s trail rehabilitation program, which is part of the capital works budget.

“Bunjil is the Indigenous word for wedge-tailed eagle, which are regularly sighted at the reserve,” he said.

“The reserve is named after the Bird family, who originally owned the land

for more than 100 years.

“Council acquired the land in the 1980s.”

Work on the new trail included a lookout seat, stonework bridge made by a local stonemason; stone steps and trail construction, including resurfacing and excavation.

Mr Prentice said the stone had been recycled from all-local granite re-used from a Southeast Water deep sewerage project.

While this trail includes steep terrain, steps and some uneven surfaces, 90 per cent of the trails at the reserve are fully accessible.

The trail is part of council’s Birdsland Master Plan 2013, which focuses on improving access to the surrounding gar-

dens and indigenous plant nursery run by volunteers onsite.

The environmental education centre at the site is now home to environmental volunteers in the area.

The fifth annual Minibeasts Festival is on Sunday 23 April, from 11am to 6pm, which is a chance for the community to take a closer look at what’s living in our waterways.

“Microscopes are set up for people to see arthropods that feed the larger animals like platypuses,” he said.

There will be a lantern-making activity and presentations on the platypus population from local groups.

The festival is run by Southern Dandenongs Landcare Group and supported by council and Melbourne Water.

By Derek Schlennstedt Hills-based Montague Fresh has vowed to aid under-privileged Australians this autumn by donating one million jazz apples to national food rescue organisation, SecondBite.

On Monday 3 March Montague's held a special harvest event in Launching Place where farmers and stakeholders assisted in harvesting the special supply of 1AJazz apples.

Together volunteers, farmers, locals and stakeholders harvested 27,000 kilograms of apples from 10am until 3pm.

In a bid to reduce the statistics of 731,300 children under the age of 15 living below the poverty line, Montague’s will also be donating 10c per kilogram of jazz apples purchased from Coles Supermarkets between 17 and 24 April to SecondBite.

A spokesperson for Montague,

Alexis Lalios said there was a great turnout of pickers and altogether over 100 people were able to pick around 27,000kgs worth of apples.

“The idea was to just invite stakeholders, locals MPs and councillors to live a life in a grower’s shoes, and see what it’s like to harvest the jazz apples.”

“Over 27,000 kilograms were picked from only 100 volunteers, which is an amazing effort,” she said.

Montague's will supply one million apples to SecondBite who will then redistribute these to third party community groups across Australia, such as the Salvation Army, Uniting Care and under-privileged primary schools.

Montague director and third-generation family member Scott Montague said it was a delight to be working with SecondBite in being able to give back to communities that need it most.

“As a family company, Montague's is delighted to be part of this effort

with SecondBite, providing apples for a valuable program that gives back to the communities in need”, Mr Montague said.

SecondBite exists to provide access to fresh, nutritious food for people in need across Australia and to date, has redistributed 32,359,427 kilograms of food across Australia, equating to over 64,000,000 meals.

Not much is more nutritious than apples and Montague’s will donate the largest amount of apples they have ever donated since 1948.

Watch out all you crooks!

The Emerald Neighbourhood Watch is ready to reform after a fouryear hiatus and will soon cast a watchful eye across the town.

After disbanding in 2013, incom-

ing chair Graeme Fergus said the time is right for reformation, with many community members already putting up their hand to support the re-booted version.

Mr Fergus said an informal meeting held recently confirmed his suspicions there was many Emerald residents

keen to see a Neighbourhood Watch program operate within the township.

He added that he and others now felt they had the confidence to work more collaboratively with Victoria Police.

Together, Mr Fergus believed they could make a real difference to com-

munity safety.

“I’ve been here for 37 years and it’s a beautiful place to live,” he said.

“We’ve yet to see the kind of disruption that is seen in the suburbs; but when they’re sick of the suburbs, they may venture out here.

“It's the biggest thing, they’re not

here, yet ... but prevention is a lovely cure.”

To gain further community interest, Mr Fergus and other committed members will be meeting at the Emerald Hall on Wednesday 26 April at 7.30am.

Attendees will be able to gain more information or register their interest.

Girls flock to the footy

By Peter Douglas The Upwey Tecoma Junior Football Club had been trying for two years to establish a girls' football team.

It turns out all they needed was social media and an enthusiastic teenage girl.

Youngster Melissa Stephenson, 13, was keen to enjoy a kick with her mates, but had been told the club hadn’t been able to recruit enough players.

But Melissa, along with her coach father Glenn, wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.

So, Melissa logged onto Facebook and messaged some friends, and five days later 15 players announced they would pull on the boots for the Tigers.

Incredibly, the inaugural junior girls'

team played their first match just days later on Sunday 2 April.

Melissa’s father and junior coach at the club, Glenn, said he had been considering hanging up the whistle before his daughter announced her desire to play.

Though they were disheartened to learn the recruiting wasn’t going to plan.

“I was disappointed to hear that no team had eventuated,” he said.

“I immediately knew that going back to my daughter, to tell her there was no team, was not an option.

“I got together with my daughter and figured that we would have a go ourselves at forming a team for the club.

“That night, she put the word out on her social platforms.

“Lo and behold, within five days, we had 12 players ready to go for our Round 1 game that Sunday.

“By Monday, we had two more signups to bring our total to 15.”

Mr Stephenson said they were confident of gaining around 18 players, which would give them a healthy bench and the ability to withstand injuries and absences due to school holidays.

He said the girls had been amazing in their endeavour and desire to learn the game, but said they found their first hitup difficult, playing against experienced opposition in Olinda.

“They were absolutely annihilated,” he said.

“But they’ll learn from the match and will improve as they move forward.”

Spreading the word about Billy A small group of Puffing Billy volunteers has been busy spreading the word about the popular railway, as part of a speaker panel that has presented at more than 1500 clubs, groups and events.

The group started in the late 1980s, and member Don Horsburgh has been on the panel since 2000, recently giving his 600th speaking presentation.

“I’ve been volunteering at Puffing Billy since I retired in 1991 and have had many roles including a booking clerk, station master, retail assistant and managing special projects like the ‘Saving Puffing Billy’ book,” he said.

“In 2000, I joined the speakers panel so I could share some of my knowledge and passion with others in our community, before taking over the coordinator role in 2004.

“I really enjoy getting out there and meeting people.”

He said everyone loves Puffing Billy and people are always excited and enthusiastic to learn about its history and operations.

“We volunteer our time to speak at service clubs like Rotary and Probus, retirement villages, historical societies, schools, charity and notfor-profit groups, libraries, senior groups, special interest groups and on community radio.”

He said Puffing Billy has such a great story to tell.

The Puffing Billy speakers panel is available to provide free talks throughout the metropolitan and country areas of Victoria.

Therapy talks the talk

By Jodie Symonds Since the tender age of 4, The Patch local Kristy Warden began to develop a stutter.

By age 18, her speech impediment developed to a stage where the related anxiety began to impact heavily on her life.

Now, she has turned around her life and has used her experience to help others to change their lives.

During Year 12 she joined the McGuire Program in Heidelberg, where she was able to overcome the speech impediment.

Ms Warden told the ‘Mail’ she felt compelled to address the issue after a difficult school experience.

“The turning point for me was when I did an oral presentation for English,” Ms Warden said.

“I could barely get through a word or two without having to stutter.

“My teachers gave me a good mark, but it was a horrible experience.”

Ms Warden said she soon found other people with the same condition, which gave her the confidence to find help.

The McGuire Programme is run by coaches and team leaders, who have experienced the same impediment.

The initiative aims to build confidence and offers techniques to overcome stuttering through speech therapy.

Ms Warden said Year 12 was a difficult time to start the program, but she wanted to improve.

“Once I completed the program, I went back to school and did the oral

Blind eye to grave(l) issue A very interesting letter appeared in the opinion page, ‘Rash of Gravel’, (‘Mail’, 4 April, 2017) by Phil Heading.

I understand this situation perfectly, except my experience is extensive gravel gathering on a footpath in Belgrave, close to the Belgrave-Hallam/ Belgrave-Gembrook roundabout.

It is here, on the Belgrave-Gembrook Road footpath, that a gravel driveway and horseshoe bend, belonging to Mater Christi property, meets the footpath.

During extensive rains, the footpath is covered in gravel from the driveway, where it connects at two points.

This is at the junction of an extremely busy roundabout of a constantly busy road.

This gravel leads to a dangerous skidding situation, where a pedestrian could fall into the path of oncoming traffic on a corner.

I have brought this to the attention of council and asked for a permanent solution to this ongoing issue; in my last contact with them in October 2016.

I was advised by them via email that the Yarra Ranges Council and Mater Christi “would keep a close eye” on the situation.

Well, in six or seven months, ‘nothing’ has been done.

The footpath is still covered in gravel at a gathering pace.

It’s an accident in the making.

I eventually escalated the situation to the Ombudsman, who advised me to liaise with the chief executive officer of Yarra Ranges Council first.

I am waiting to see just how much more gravel collects before doing just that.

Potentially, this could escalate into an Ombudsman case.

As Phil Heading stated in his letter, “time to take responsibility”.

Beautiful Belgrave Congratulations to Yarra Ranges Councillor, Mike Clarke, for calling the Saturday 18 March public meeting to consider the proposed huge development in Monbulk Road, Belgrave.

It was clear that all or almost all the 80 or so people present opposed the project, and grave concerns were expressed about serious traffic problems, fire risk, unsightly visual impacts, intrusion on Puffing Billy and damage to the quaint and iconic style of Belgrave township.

It is to be hoped that the developer will reconsider his plan and that another grossly inappropriate building will not be forced on another small Victorian community.

Going global with globes

By Peter Douglas Gembrook’s Leah Anderson is the poster child of the modern entrepreneur - ambitious, internet savvy and turning passion into a hit online business.

After first creating her snow globes around 2012, which she gave to family and friends, Leah started her business - Queen of Snow Globes - and stumbled upon a niche in the market.

In fact, the demand for her globes was so strong her business has grown from filling orders locally, to assembling a team of staff, to custom-making globes for international clients.

This impressive list of orders extends to Hollywood megastars, including actors Steve Martin, Channing Tatum and Kurt Russell.

Though one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, orders came from cult director Quentin Tarantino.

He ordered a whopping 500 globes to give as gifts to those who worked on the set of his 2016 film, ‘The Hateful Eight’.

The globes feature intricate models inspired from the film, which Leah said was a daunting task.

“The producer was quite clear about what he wanted and I was worried we may not live up to expectations,” she said.

“But they turned out fantastic; they’re a phenomenal-looking globe.

“They loved them so much they ordered another 300 globes, which were presented to guests at the Oscars.”

Their passion’s for fashion Monbulk Care Network will host its second annual fashion parade on Thursday 27 April, 1.30pm, at Bernardo’s Restaurant and Cafe, 109 Main Road, Monbulk (at the junction of Monbulk and Olinda roads).

Featured in the parade will be outfits including styles suitable for cooler weather, also some evening and casual wear.

This year, some children’s clothing will also be shown.

Afternoon tea will be served and will be included in the ticket price of $25 per person or $20 concession.

Their upmarket stalls featuring French floristry, rare books, giftware and home accessories, fashion accessories including scarves and jewellery, men’s gifts and pretty; and practical gifts for tea and coffee lovers will again be available.

Monbulk Care Network is an outreach of the Open Door Com-

munity Church, which seeks to be a localised, authentic expression of Christian faith.

The profits from money raised at the op shop are used to support child well-being in local schools and those in our community who are struggling.

Some funds raised through the fashion parade this year will assist in the refurbishment of the new premises.

Monbulk Care Network always welcomes new volunteers for processing the generous donations which they receive from local people, for sales assistance and general helpful support.

The volunteers enjoy the fellowship of like-minded people people who want to assist others in the community, as well as the social interaction that this provides.

The market is dedicated to promoting local small businesses, emerging artists, makers and designers to the wider community.

Coonara has several new projects, offering volunteering opportunities in their community kitchen and organic garden, making furniture in the community shed and becoming a contributor to The Foothills

online community magazine.

For those over 55s on Centrelink’s Newstart allowance, who need to undertake minimum volunteer hours, they also offer a variety of community projects and return to work skills training.

The most popular programs in term one were beekeeping, soap making, print making and cooking.

These are all running again in term two, along with new

short courses: Introduction to Working in Community Services, and computer courses.

Drop in to Coonara for a ‘cuppa’ and a tour any week day between 9am and 4pm and talk to the friendly staff about how you can join the volunteer and learning programs.

Art’s in as studios open their doors

Hills alive with all things uke The Dandenong Ranges Ukulele Festival (DRUKE) will return bigger and better in 2017.

Like previous years, DRUKE will fill the hills with all things ukulele over the weekend of 20-21 May, with Emerald Primary School set to host this year’s event.

The Saturday will feature various workshops and daytime concerts from 10am to 3pm.

Afterwards, school groups - both local and from as far as the Mallee will perform their sets on the main stage from 3pm to 5pm.

This leads into the Junior ‘Golden Uke Awards’ from 5pm to 7pm, which will feature school groups and individual students battling it out to win fabulous prizes.

On offer will be ukuleles and recording equipment packages for ‘Best Solo School Artist’, ‘Best School Group’ and ‘Best School Songwriter’.

Then, the evening gala concert begins at 7pm, which will feature fabulous artists from around the state, including Younis Clare, Lucy Wise, Jane Cameron, Sarah Carroll

and The Thin White Ukes.

Meanwhile, Sunday 21 May will see the return of daytime concerns and market stalls, from 10am to 3pm.

Next will be the senior ‘Golden Uke Awards’, from 3pm to 5pm, again with fabulous prizes on offer for ‘Best Solo Artist’, ‘Best Group’ and ‘Best Songwriter’.

A group strum-along during the dinner will take place from 5pm to 6pm.

This will set up the appetite for some truly outstanding acts, including Sadie Mustoe, Alex Burns, A.J Leonard, Matthew Fagan’s Ukuleleland, and the internationally acclaimed Montgomery Brothers (during the evening concert at 7pm).

Throughout these events, there will be a ukulele market in operation, and under 4 years drumming and ukulele workshops.

Food is available on site, as well as the chance to enjoy a relaxing glass of wine before the evening concerts.

Dandenong Ranges Open Studios is set to enliven the hills again, with 34 participating studios to open their doors for visitation on the weekend of 29-30 April.

Now celebrating its 14th year, the annual weekend program invites visitors from the region and afar to meet, greet, witness and learn from artists working in their private studios.

Last year, this highly anticipated event attracted more than 6500 studio visitations.

Project co-ordinator Gareth Hart said the event represented an exciting opportunity.

“In 2017, we welcome an incredible suite of individual artists, an excellent array of emerging artists, and the choice of collective studios,” he said.

“This year’s program highlights the true depth and breadth of creative practice in the hills - a testament to our history as a creatively vibrant and rich community.”

As well as regular popular favourites - such as painters, ceramicists, and textile and collage artists - this year’s program features some exciting and fresh creativity.

Among the highlights will include: a tattooist, an astro-photographer, costume designers and a 72-year-old emerging artist.

Each studio in the program will contribute to a major exhibition at Burrinja Cultural Centre.

“Based around the theme of duality, the exhibition explores the artistic and creative process of oppositional forces - of nature, within ourselves, of practice,” Mr Hart said.

An easy-to-use Open Studios guidebook has been available in Burrinja and throughout the Hills from February.

The Open Studios Weekend will be held on 29-30 April from 10am to 5pm.

Celebration of nature-inspired art

By Jodie Symonds The vibrant and atmospheric artwork of Belinda Volkmer will be on display at Miloko in Sassafras until Friday 28 April.

Called ‘Celebration’, the exhibition was inspired by the time Volkmer spent as a child in the Dandenong Ranges and on trips to the beach.

These experiences gave her the opportunity to collect treasures from nature and the time to observe.

The exhibition opened on Saturday 18 March, where Volkmer discussed her fascination for colour and texture.

She said at the opening that one of her earliest memories was running her hand along a weed and examining the varying greens and rusts in the seeds.

“I also loved luminous green Christmas beetles, moss, lichen, bark, leaves, feathers, shells, flowers, rocks and shimmering water,” Volkmer said.

Art for Volkmer is a way of nourishing positive connections with nature.

“I have been painting continuously for eight years now, and I know it will be a lifelong pursuit,” she said.

“My early paintings were semirealistic; however, in recent years I’ve shifted into a contemporary or abstract art style.

“This occurred spontaneously.

Volkmer’s work is a blend of large, broad brush strokes and fine detailed touches that enhance the sense of depth and space.

“I prefer to use a large canvas

that gives me scope to use generous amount of paint and move it around freely,” she said.

Today, we’re looking at two different remakes of popular franchises from the ’90s.

In Power Rangers, five teenage misfits are granted superhuman powers by an ancient civilisation, and must band together to thwart the evil Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).

Power Rangers has surprisingly excellent character development; the leads all have fantastic chemistry, and the narrative is driven by a touching, mature journey of the heroes growing to trust each other, overcoming their flaws and finding inner strength.

Banks is wonderfully hammy as Rita, and the action is cleanly shot and easy to follow; there just isn’t enough of it, and the weak broader conflict feels neglected alongside the strong character dynamics.

Ghost in the Shell is a live-action remake of Mamoru Oshii’s classic 1995 anime, and follows elite counter-terrorism agent Mira Killian (Scarlett Johansson), the first full-body cyborg, as she uncovers a conspiracy about her origins.

Ghost in the Shell has jaw-droppingly stunning visual design, engaging performances, stylish action and a fairly intriguing narrative with some well-handled twists.

Unfortunately, Johansson is very flat in the lead role, and the anime and source manga’s abstract, fascinating themes of artificial intelligence and the nature of self are mostly dropped in favour of a more generic corporate bad-guy conflict.

Speaking for myself, Power Rangers was far better than expected, while Ghost in the Shell wasn’t as good as I’d hoped.

Parks Victoria’s conservation management to restore and protect park habitat includes the control of introduced plant and animal species. As part of an ongoing strategy, notice is hereby given that Parks Victoria will be conducting a controlled, safe and humane deer control operation targeting Fallow and Sambar Deer in three areas of public land within the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges.

The program, which will start in mid-April 2017, aims to remove deer from critical areas and reduce the numbers of deer in the Dandenong Ranges National Park and Yellingbo and Warramate Hills nature conservation reserves.

Spotlight shooting at night and stalking in the morning and late afternoon will be the main control techniques. Parks Victoria will be conducting the program in partnership with accredited and authorised volunteer members of the Australian Deer Association and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia.

The affected areas within the parks and reserves will be closed during periods of control. Advertising signs will be displayed at all official entrance points to the Park and reserves when shooting is in progress.

Wheeler grabs top gong Upwey-Tecoma’s fast bowler Cameron Wheeler is quickly gathering cricket accolades after he was awarded the Jack Feaver Medal for best player in the Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association for season 2016-'17.

The Upwey Tecoma Junior Football Club had been trying for two years to establish a girls football team.

It turns out all they needed was social media and an enthusiastic teenage girl.

Youngster Melissa Stephenson, 13, was keen to enjoy a kick with her mates, but had been told the club hadn't been able to recruit enough players.

But Melissa, along with her coach father Glenn, wouldn't take 'no' for an answer.

So, Melissa logged on to Facebook and messaged some friends, and five days later 15 players announced they would pull on the boots for the Tigers.

Incredibly, the inaugural junior girls team played their first match just days later on Sunday 2 April.

Mellissa's father and junior coach at the club, Glenn, said he had been considering hanging up the whistle before his daughter announced her desire to play.

Though, they were disheartened to learn the recruiting wasn't going to plan.

"I was disappointed to hear that

no team had eventuated," he said.

"I immediately knew that going back to my daughter, to tell her there was no team, was not an option.

"I got together with my daughter and figured that we would have a go ourselves at forming a team for the club.

"That night, she put the word out on her social platforms.

"Lo and behold, within five days, we had 12 players ready to go for our Round 1 game that Sunday.

"By Monday, we had two more sign-ups to bring our total to 15."

Mr Stephenson said they were confident of gaining around 18 players, which will give them a healthy bench and the ability to withstand injuries and absences due to school holidays.

He said the girls had been amazing in their endeavour and desire to learn the game, but said they found their first hit-up difficult, playing against experienced opposition in Olinda.

"They were absolutely annihilated," he said.

"But they'll learn from the match and will improve as they move forward."

Division 1 saw a clash between last year’s Division 1 Premiers in Healesville, taking on the reigning Division 2 Premiers in Gembrook Cockatoo; as well as the Professionals Cup at Wandin, while Powelltown and Yarra Junction played in their local rival clash.

Some surprise results and some good football was witnessed by club’s supporters.

The winners in senior football: Emerald, Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Belgrave, Powelltown, Yarra Glen and Yea. A Grade netball winners: Healesville, Wandin v Mt Evelyn (draw - match abandoned); Olinda Ferny Creek, Woori Yallock, Belgrave, Yarra Junction, Yarra Glen and Yea. Warburton got their game going in the second, kicking four straight, but Olinda also increased their lead by kicking 5.6. Olinda well and truly kicked away in the third with a seven-goal quarter, while Warburton could not manage a major.

Another big eight-goal quarter to nil in the last gave Olinda the start to the season they wanted.

Motoring Feature-packed Prado Toyota has scaled new heights of value, convenience and on-road appeal with the announcement of a LandCruiser Prado Altitude special-edition model.

The Prado Altitude, based on the already well-equipped GXL turbo-diesel with automatic transmission, delivers at least $10,000 of extra features for just $5000.

Toyota’s makeover is instantly recognisable because the Prado Altitude, unlike regular Prado models, carries the spare tyre underneath the vehicle rather than on the tailgate.

The convenience of the clean rear design is further enhanced by a glass hatch that opens independently of the tailgate to provide access to the spacious luggage area.

Prado Altitude is also distinguished by stylish new 18-inch alloy wheels, a tilt-and-slide moonroof, auto-levelling LED headlamps and chrome side mouldings.

Inside, the special-edition Prado focuses on even higher levels of comfort, convenience and entertainment, including the addition of black leatheraccented upholstery.

Front-seat occupants can obtain the best possible position with power-operated seats - eight-way for the driver and four-way for the passenger.

Once settled into the trip, occupants are treated to a premium JBL 14-speaker audio system that also offers digital (DAB+) radio.

Back-seat passengers can also “tune out" by tuning in to a Blu-ray rear entertainment system that features a ceiling-mounted 9-inch monitor and 5.1-channel surround sound - all enjoyed through three wireless head-

way to 2400rpm. Combined-cycle fuel economy is just 8.0 litres per 100km.

Prado Altitude retains up-market GXL features including reversing camera, satellite navigation viewed on a seven-inch display screen, cruise control, three-zone climate-controlled air-conditioning, rear parking sensors, audio controls on the steering wheel and keyless smart entry and ignition.

Other standard safety features fitted to every Prado include seven airbags,

vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes, hill-start assist control and downhill assist control.

The Prado Altitude is available in four colours - black and the $550 option of silver peal, crystal pearl and graphite.

It is covered by Toyota Service Advantage with services capped at $240 for each of up to six standard scheduled services.

“An RACV survey of young people found that while a lack of transport affected their social trips, only a few said it impacted their ability to get employment,” he said.

The RACV has expressed its disappointment with the recent report from the Law Reform, Road and Community Safety Committee, which recommended the driving age be lowered from 18 to 17.

RACV general manager Public Policy, Brian Negus, said the RACV did not support the recommendation.
