‘No limits’ as tallest building approved

Truck smash kills driver, spares pregnant partner

By Luke Voogt A heavily pregnant woman and her unborn child survived a truck crash that killed her fiance at Maude on Thursday morning.

The 32-year-old woman and the 40-year-old driver, both from South Australia, were en route from the Mildura area when the truck rolled at 2.20am The truck was travelling downhill on Perdrisat Rd before the driver lost control, Bannockburn Sergeant Craig Grant said.

The truck was carrying a load of grapes to a local vineyard, he said.

“It’s quite steep decline going doing that hill and the truck hasn’t been able to slow down. He lost control as he went across the bridge over Moorabool River.”

The truck jack-knifed and rolled, destroying the cabin and trailer, Sgt Grant said.

“It was extensively damaged.”

The seriously injured woman crawled out of the cabin wreckage and called triple zero as her fiance died at the scene, Sgt Grant said.

Paramedics airlifted her to The Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, where she was recovering in stable condition, a hospital spokesperson said on Thursday afternoon.

Sgt Grant said the crash was “very tragic” but could have easily been worse.

“Given the extent of the damage of the truck she was extremely lucky to survive.”

Sgt Grant said truck drivers commonly used the road but he urged them to consider alternative routes.

“It’s a very steep valley so we’d certainly be recommending fully laden trucks don’t use it.”

Police were continuing their investigation when the Indy went to press.

The crash brought the Victorian Road toll to 63, compared to 79 at the same time in 2016.

Awards’ new AIM Two category winners at 2017’s Geelong Business Excellence Awards will enter the finals of a “prestigious” state titles, the city’s chamber of commerce has announced.

The chamber said it was “thrilled” to secure a partnership with Australian Institute of Management (AIM) for the winners of the Business Leader and Young Entrepreneur categories.

A win at AIM’s Victorian Leadership Excellence Awards would earn a place at the institute’s national titles.

The chamber described AIM’s program as “the peak national awards program that recognises and celebrates Australia’s most outstanding leaders”.

Chamber chief Bernadette Uzelac, who was on the AIM awards’ 2016 judging panel, was “delighted” with the arrangement.

“For the past three decades the AIM Leadership Excellence Awards have showcased individuals that have made a meaningful impact and contribution to their organisation and community,” she said.

“The chamber looks forward to recognising the 2017 Business Leader of the Year and Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the business awards presentation dinner in August and I hope to see both winners standing on the stage as the Victorian winners at the AIM Leadership Excellence Awards later this year.”

AIM chief David Pich said the Leadership Excellence Awards had a proud tradition.

“I look forward to seeing Geelong’s finest leader and young entrepreneur representing their great city and business community in the Victorian finals and possibly the national finals,” he said.

Detectives prepare charges after raid Echo Taskforce detectives arrested three men with links to the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang after executing warrants in North Geelong on Tuesday morning.

Plain clothes detectives raided the Rebels’ clubhouse on Edols Place and four other addresses in Drysdale.

Police seized ammunition from the North Geelong property, and two motorcy-

cles, a trailer and false number plates from the Drysdale properties. They arrested three Drysdale men, aged 24, 36 and 42, who were assisting police with their enquiries.

Police expected to charge the three men with offences including possessing stolen goods.

They released a fourth man without charge.

The warrants were part of an ongoing Echo Taskforce investigation.

They had nothing on The Great Train Robbery crooks but two bungling burglars still achieved their own 15 minutes of infamy in central Geelong this week.

The bedraggled pair was first spotted entering an office building car park, mangy dog in tow.

Rummaging around for valuables, they eventually settled on a full-size fridge sitting idle in a storage area.

Both struggled to load the prize onto a small bicycle trailer. “Whatcha lookin’ at?� they aggressively inquired of the first witness to happen upon them, ordering him away with menace.

The witness retreated, phoning police from a nearby vantage point.

Eventually the dastardly duo wrestled the fridge away from the crime scene, only for it to topple smack onto the roadway outside the Bush Inn. Traffic banked up as they reloaded their haul then wobbled off down the road again.

Imaging their dismay after lugging the fridge all the way back to their lair - only to discover it doesn’t work.

Anyway, a certain business says, ‘Thanks for the free hard-rubbish collection, losers!’

A now-standard rebuttal to criticisms of the process by which the Andrews Government axed Geelong’s mayoral vote has emerged.

And, boy, does it set a new level of faulty logic.

Initiating from NewDemocracy Foundation, which conducted the Citizens’ Jury that recommended axing the vote, it goes something like this: you can’t criticise the decision unless you sat through the process.

Interesting. By that logic individuals can’t criticise sentencing without sitting through court cases.

Mind you, some local hospitality establishments might like adapting the argument.

Corio Bay needs more infrastructure to improve cruise ship visits, according to Geelong’s peak tourism body.

Tourism Geelong and the Bellarine deputy director Brett Ince made the comments as Sirena Oceania dropped anchor in Corio Bay on Tuesday.

“We’re in the business of trying to encourage more cruise ships to come into Geelong,” he said.

“Whether it’s a Yarra Street pier or another proposition, any improved infrastructure could mean more opportunities for Geelong.”

The ship brought 680 tourists into the bay, Mr Ince said.

“The majority of those opted to stay in Geelong and explore the region. The ship was on a swing mooring out there - it’s a 10-to-15-minute trip in and out.”

The ship dropped anchor about 3am on Tuesday and passengers began disembarking between 7am and 8am. It departed at 6pm that evening.

The passengers enjoyed local attractions such as Geelong’s gallery and botanical gardens, and live sheep shearing at the National Wool Museum, Mr Ince said.

“It’s a short walk or shuttle bus to major attractions in Geelong which does give us a competitive advantage.”

Mr Ince said a new pier or improvements to Cunningham Pier would allow more ships to dock and make overnight stays in Geelong more likely.

“There is infrastructure which is needed for that,” he said.

“In the past there have been ships that have used (Cunningham Pier).”

He added that the state government would need to deepen the channel to the bay for bigger cruise ships to enter.

Mr Wynne expected central Geelong to house 10,000 residents by 2028.

“Geelong is one of Victoria’s most attractive places to live and is growing at rapid rate,” he said.

“New housing options close to services helps us cater to population growth.”

The new building, Miramar, would create 300 jobs or two or three years, said its development manager, Geordie Edwards.

“What we’re trying to do is enhance the city precinct,” he said.

The developers had explained Mirmar’s “lowimpact” on surrounding commercial areas to Ms Couzens, Mr Edwards said.

“I think she needed a bit more information on what we were trying to achieve.”

Agents had already sold 37 of the 112 apartments, mostly to owner-occupiers, Mr Edwards said.

“A number of them are looking to downsize.”

Agents sold 19 apartments in March ahead of Mr Wynne’s official approval.

“We went in with a very strong idea we were getting approval,” Mr Geordie said.

Planning consultant Anna Borthwick said the developers worked closely with the state’s planning body to make sure the building reflected the character of Geelong.

The project underwent two state architect panel reviews before approval, she said.

“There’s no point designing apartments that (only) people in Melbourne will like.”

Nearby residents had mixed reactions to the development.

Steve Nasmith welcomed Miramar but doubted that central Geelong had adequate amenities to support numerous residential developments.

“There’s nothing here and look at the roads,” he said.

Georgia Delaney was concerned about the construction process.

“I’m not looking forward to the noise.”

“It’s something that should be done from a social standpoint for Geelong,” he said.

Mr Shockman said the City could build four dolphins - man-made marine structures above the water level - around the pier for $2.5 million.

“That can be done for a very small sum compared to what they advocated for a Yarra Street Pier,” he said.

“It’s a no brainer. If you look at some of the research council been done for Yarra Street Pier it’s worth millions of dollars.”

But Mr Shokman said Costa Property Group would not build the dolphins because ship operators would not pay to dock.

“They know they’re bringing in millions of dollars of business and they don’t want to pay for anything - we’re not going to make any money out of it.”

City Hall’s Brett Luxford said council would consider any cost-effective proposal to increase tourism.

“We recognise that visiting cruise ships offer great potential, and we already actively encourage those visits through our support of Tourism Geelong and the Bellarine,” he said.

City Hall is rejecting only 1 per cent of planning applications in a “balancing act” between development and community impacts, according to a council administrator.

Kathy Alexander said the City was “pleased with our progress to date” as new figures showed the value of greater Geelong building permits at a record $1.3 billion in 2016.

The result was a 21.4 per cent increase on 2015, the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) reported.

The value of domestic construction permits was up 16.6 per cent to $884 million, with commercial and retail rising 30 and 45 per cent respectively.

Geelong posted the state’s fifth-highest value of building permits, as Victoria posted a statewide record $32 billion.

The only category to fall in Geelong during 2016 was residential, including apartments, which was down 63 per cent to a value of $21 million, the VBA said.

The figures emerged as Geelong recorded “phenomenal” population growth over the past year, Dr Alexander said.

“Our rate of growth has more than doubled since 2011-'12,” she said.

“Geelong’s population grew by 5621 to 235,343 in 2015-16, an annual population growth rate of 2.4 per cent. This is up from 3396 new residents the previous year and equal to the growth rate of Melbourne for the same period - Australia’s fastest growing capital city.”

City Hall’s planning department was performing a “balancing act” to manage the impact of growth on social and environmental concerns, Dr Alexander said.

“The City deals with the third highest number of planning applications across the state and issued close to 1700 permits in the 2015-'16 financial year.

Waterfront saviour engineers credit

By Luke Voogt An engineer who helped save Geelong’s waterfront has won recognition as one of Victoria’s best.

City Hall engineering services manager Vicki Shelton won a state-wide award from a field of 500 entrants.

“I was very surprised and honoured,” she said.

Ms Shelton was the former Geelong City Council’s first female engineer in 138 years when she joined in 1986.

But she said being a woman in a male-dominated industry never bothered her.

“At uni it was two females and 70 guys in the four-year course - so I guess you get used to it.

There’s more now which is great.”

Ms Shelton credits much of her success to her senior engineer mentors.

“And when I was out on the job with outdoor crews, I learnt a lot.”

She was proud of her role in protecting and enhancing Geelong’s iconic foreshore.

“It’s what you do behind the scenes,” she said.

“If we didn’t do that, we wouldn’t have something the community could use and be proud of.”

In 1990 erosion and storm water runoff were threatening Eastern Beach. At the same time, Bay City Plaza (now Westfield) was under construction.

Council used materials from demolished wool stores and industrial sites on the shopping complex site to fill in the beach, and built a sea wall.

“That helped create the foreshore from the Sailing Club and to the swimming pool enclosure,” Ms Shelton said.

“We build a lot of new things, but it’s also about protecting the heritage and the past.”

When Ms Shelton joined council (before amalgamation) there were roughly 50 staff with 10 in the engineering department.

“Now I’ve got 80 staff that I manage.”

Ms Shelton won Engineer of the Year 2017 in the Victorian division of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia.

Dr Alexander and co-administrators Peter Dorline and Laurinda Gardner are developing an Our Future long-term planning strategy for Geelong.

The have said the strategy would guide Geelong’s planning for the next 30 years.

The administrators’ term ends in October with the election of a new greater Geelong Council.

The Andrews Government appointed the administrators last year after sacking the previous council, largely over allegations of a bullying culture at City Hall.

John Wynde says his daughter would never have beaten her heroin addiction without family support.

“Like many people who work in drug and alcohol support I had a family member suffering from addiction,” he told the Indy Tuesday.

“I was so alone - I had just lost my wife to cancer. You feel so powerless and don’t know what to do.”

John spoke to the Indy Tuesday night before running the first session of an “innovative” new program for families of addicts at the Salvos’ Myer Street centre.

“We’re teaching people skills and strategies to cope,” he said.

“The recovery of a substance user is always far more successful if the family is involved.”

John was a teacher in Melbourne when he discovered his daughter’s addiction roughly two decades ago.

His daughter would take “speed for work and heroin to relax”.

“Then the heroin took over and the work began to stop,” he said.

“It’s all you can think about - you feel ashamed and guilty when often it has nothing to do with the family.”

John said the public often labelled people caring for a family member with a drug problem as “soft” or weak”.

“The stigma causes families to feel terribly isolated.”

But when John joined Family Drug Help in 2000 it helped him overcome the isolation and learn how to help his daughter.

“I thought I was the only one but six out of 40 staff (at the school where he taught) had children who were affected by drugs in some way,” he said.

“Ironically, once I told family and friends I felt like a huge weight had lifted.”

His daughter has been off drugs for five years and John now mentors families struggling with addiction.

“She’s OK now - as OK as someone can be who has used drugs for a while,” he said.

“A lot of it was how I’d changed and what I’d learned at Family Drug Help.”

The family support group, which runs the first and third Tuesday of each month, was a first for the centre, said Salvo Connect’s Kate Pearce.

“Unless you are talking to someone who’s been through it, they don’t understand. Let’s be smart about the way we help people.”

She urged families struggling with addiction to phone 9573 1748 for more information.

A vibrant spray Geelong youths and street artists combined to bring two bland walls to life at Whittington Wednesday.

They transformed the walls with spray paint into vibrant murals to celebrate National Youth Week.

The City’s Linda Quinn said the murals were a great way for young people to have a positive impact on the community.

“The artwork will help create a sense of pride, respect and ownership in the area.”

“We’re also working on two other murals, one with a renowned street artist, a business and a school in North Geelong and one with young people at the Waurn Ponds skate park.”

The murals would improve the look and feel of the area, Ms Quinn said.

“They’re big, bright, full of colour and will transform the walls into vibrant and appealing spaces.”

One mural depicted the locally iconic Bellarine Rail Trail while the other used ’tape art’.

Ms Quinn said National Youth Week was about “celebrating our young people and the contribution they make to our community“.

The celebrations will continue this weekend with Geelong Youth Fest Saturday and skating, scoot and BMX competitions in Waurn Ponds Sunday.

“It’s very humbling that someone in the community wants to give back to us,” he said.

A Geelong hairdresser and cafe are leading the charge to make April 'Veterans Month' with free coffee and haircuts for ex-service members.

Hairdresser Lulu Parkinson, whose uncle served in Vietnam, called on businesses to offer veterans free or discounted services for the month.

“We want to get a heap of businesses on board,” she said.

“Let’s start giving because they gave so much for us. If half a dozen hairdressers got onto it that would be fantastic.”

For Vietnam veteran John Pepperdine the gesture is more than just a freebie.

“It shows the community believes in us and that we are appreciated,” he said.

“We went through a lot; it’s only been the last two decades or so that we’ve actually been acknowledged. But we’re looked after now.”

The National Draft uprooted John from daily life as teacher in 1966 and sent him into the Vietnamese jungle as forward observer.

John patrolled with infantry units and called in artillery strikes on enemy positions. He remembered one patrol where the man beside him was shot in the head.

“We were firing at shadows and then it was all over,” he said.

“We rolled him over and the rest of his head was missing.”

The return home is also vivid in John’s mind.

“We had to get into civvy clothing and we came to Brisbane at 3am or 4am,” he said.

“There were still protesters there calling us child-killers and rapists.

John returned to teaching, but hit the “brick wall” of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) about 20 years ago.

“I would just close the door and cry my eyes out,” he said.

Lady luck meets three in Geelong

Maiden dawn service set for town Geelong will host possibly its first Anzac Day dawn service as a “workable” alternative to record crowds at Torquay’s event, according to a spokesman.

A committee of mostly veterans had secured council approval to run the 6am service at Eastern Beach, Daryl McLure said.

The event would operate between Geelong’s traditional 4.15am pre-dawn service and 11am march to give the city a “full suite” of Anzac commemorations, he said.

“The Eastern Beach service is being undertaken to give Geelong-based people an additional and for some a workable opportunity to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”

Torquay’s service at Point Danger attracted 15,000 patrons last year, making access difficult

for participants including the elderly and infirm.

Mr McLure said Ocean Grove’s Bob Thompson, a former soldier, first raised the Eastern Beach service, which Geelong Catholic priest Father Kevin Dillon later championed.

Mr Thompson said he believed that Geelong was Victoria’s only major city without a dawn service.

“We have a pre-dawn service in a very small area, with no access for disabled people,” he said.

Committee chair Rieny Nieuwenhof expected the Geelong service to take pressure off Torquay’s event, which he said was “struggling to cope".

“We feel that the people of Geelong will welcome this opportunity to show their appreciation to our fallen at a simple yet traditional service at a brilliant venue close to home.”

Three Geelong winners have hit the jackpot in what was a bonanza week for lotto in the city.

A couple, both in their thirties, had a sleepless night after winning $463,590.

“My husband was working a night shift on Saturday,” the wife explained.

“When he got home he looked up the winning numbers ... and told me we had all six.

The couple said they would buy a new house with the money.

“It’s so hard to buy a house these days, and we want it for our children later on,” the wife said.

“We’re a bit crazy because we already started house-hunting on Sunday.”

Another Geelong woman didn’t believe Tatts officials when they told her she had also won the division one prize.

“I thought it was a scam or joke or something because things like this don’t happen to people like me,” she said.

“I’ve been playing for a hell of a long time, just playing the same numbers over and over again.”

The woman was yet to decide what to do with the money, but said she would likely donate some to charities she supported.

After 30 years buying lotto tickets a retired Geelong man won $100,000 in his first go at a new game on Wednesday afternoon.

“Goodness me!” the man said. “I’ve never won anything in my life apart from a chook raffle.”

“I’ll probably give most of it to my kids.“ The man, who wished to remain anonymous, purchased his entry from Belmont Lotto.

“How’s that for beginner’s luck,” said store owner Richard Stone.

“There’s been a couple of big wins in Geelong over the weekend, so it’s great to see the third sold here.”

Freak accident kills cyclist, 64

By Luke Voogt A freak accident killed a 64-year-old Ocean Grove cyclist on 13th Beach Road at Connewarre on Tuesday morning, police said.

“It was a one-in-a-million kind of incident,” said Leading Senior Constable Gavin Duncan.

The man was riding at the head of a group of about 15 cyclists at 8.15am when he fell from his bike. He’s basically fallen heavily onto his head as a result of his front wheel detaching,” Leading Sen Const Duncan said.

A nurse and her husband who rode past shortly after administered first-aid, along with other mem-

bers of the group, Leading Sen Const Duncan said.

An ambulance soon arrived, but paramedics were unable to revive the man.

Leading Sen Const Duncan said the experienced rider rode regularly in social groups and described the incident as tragically unlucky.

“He was just a poor old average retired fellow out with his mates and he’s died doing what he loves.”

“The road’s a popular route for recreational cyclists and in good condition. They wouldn’t have been using it if it wasn’t.”

“We’ll be investigating whether there were any faults with the bike.”

Residents reject and alcohol clinic

Highton residents opposing a planned drug and alcohol clinic have vowed to fight to the highest level if Geelong’s administrators approve the project.

“As a community, we are certainly prepared to fight this as long as we can,” said former councillor Ron Nelson, who was co-ordinating the campaign.

But the company behind the planned clinic will await a City Hall hearing that will examine the project next Tuesday before deciding its next move, its rehab manager said.

Mr Nelson held a meeting of about 70 residents at the Highton Tennis Club Monday night.

“I just tried to get a sense of how many we

could get to speak at the administrators’ meeting,” he said.

Mr Nelson, a Highton resident, has vehemently opposed the proposed clinic due to its location 12m from a local bottle shop and near a veterinarian.

He tabled a petition of 427 signatures against the clinic at a City Hall meeting on 28 February.

City Hall received a further 99 objections to the project.

“I think this will inevitably end up at VCAT (Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal) - so we’re preparing for that,“ Mr Nelson said.

“That may cost us a substantial amount of money.”

But Habitat Therapeutics’ rehab manager Warren Holland said the company would await

the administrators’ verdict before deciding what action to take.

“We’re going to let the process take place. We’re not trying to boss people around.”

Mr Holland said it was virtually impossible to avoid all contact with anything alcohol-related, and that learning to deal with temptation was part of the treatment.

He welcomed the administrators’ examination of the project.

“We’re a legitimate business trying to operate a legitimate service, and we have as much right as any other business to run under the permits we have.”

Geelong’s administrators will consider the proposal at a public hearing at 5pm on 11 April.

New Geelong-based website Anytime Professionals is an “Australian first” that will revolutionise accounting, says founder Anthony Tripolino.

The service connects clients to qualified bookkeepers, tax agents and accountants around the country.

“It’s almost like Uber for accountants,” Anthony says.

“I don’t think there’s anyone out there who can offer a 24/7 service with professionals who are all qualified.”

Forced to delete his social media account, which had been inundated with weekend queries, the Geelong accountant is the brainchild of Anytime Professionals.

“We’re in an age where people are becoming increasingly hungry for information,” he said.

“So I thought ‘why can’t we connect them to qualified people?’”

The site went live Friday, after nine months of work, and clients can now get help with everything from tax returns and salary sacrifices to starting a business or interstate advice.

“The fact that it’s not postcode driven is a big advantage,” Anthony says.

The site requires its professionals to upload their certificates of registration, qualifications and insurance “just to get in the door,” he adds.

The professionals can’t see each other’s quotes and clients rate them on their performance.

Anthony’s dad Frank has worked in the business 40 years and his business Tripolino Accountants will hit the 30-year mark this month.

“We as family are just trying to support what he’s doing,” he said.

“We see it as something innovative, and we really believe it will strengthen the profession. In the long term, we see it creating relationships between clients and professionals.”

March 2017 was much warmer than normal across the Geelong region.

The month’s average minimums were 2.6C above the usual 12.3C and maximums 2.5C above the long-term 23.3C. The overall difference was therefore 2.6C above the mean, making the month just past Geelong’s fourth-hottest March on record.

The much warmer-than-normal nights of March’s Indian summer were probably the most noticeable players in this result.

A massive severe rainstorm struck most of the region on 22 March, bringing falls of 103mm at

Lorne, 101mm at Airey’s Inlet and 77mm at Clifton Springs-Drysdale.

In urban Geelong Breakwater recorded 33.4mm and Corio had 58mm, while Lara received 58mm.

The downpours resulted from thunderstorms that covered much of south-western Victoria as part of a weather system about which the Bureau of Meteorology became certain only two days prior.

Flash flooding was the dominant feature of the event, striking around the region at localities including Drysdale and central Geelong.

In fact, the flash flooding was as widely separated as Wye River and Lara, affecting townships along the Surf Coast and suburbs around Geelong.

Letters Parking pooh-pooh’s rubbery number Why shouldn’t both Bill Votsaris and Greg McDonald express their exasperation with the failure to deliver free weekday parking in central Geelong (Indy, 31 March)?

From a real-world, hard-yards perspective, Greg McDonald operated a successful real estate business as a CBD tenant for almost two decades. Therefore, his 24/7-free-parking model, tendered at a recent council election, whereby commercial landlords would cover City Hall’s revenue shortfall for an annual rates charge of around one per cent, along with tweaked fines for overstays, had currency and was worthy of a trial for the sake of resuscitating the CBD. Yet a transitory, politically appointed, parttime council administration has readily accepted the soft option of pooh-poohing free CBD parking by conveniently accepting the astonishing claims of SGS Economics and Planning and O’Brien Traffic that free parking would cost the City $14 million a year in lost revenue.

What an amazing hike given that in recent years both $6 million and then $8 million were the espoused council figures.

In theme with this farce and ivory-tower acceptance of rubbery figures, which doesn’t provide city traders or ratepayers with a fair go, one can hear an auctioneer asking: ‘What am I bid?’

Decadence in cabaret setting

By Luke Voogt Marie Antoinette is more than the “Party Queen” of the 1700s to cabaret songstress Anya Anastasia.

For Anastasia France’s most famous queen embodies decadence and our modern culture of “having whatever you want when you want”.

“Decadence is a really beautiful thing to have in a cabaret setting,” she said.

“Cabaret is such an indulgent experience. It’s just such a wonderful way to connect with the audience.”

Initially Anastasia was attracted to garish and striking costumes of the era. But Antoinette soon became her satirical take on over-indulgence and the “disconnect” of leaders.

“I just became fascinated with her with her as a character,” she said.

“She was all cake and champagne and when we take that to the extreme there are consequences.”

Anastasia penned Torte E Mort: Songs of Cake and Death in 2014 when Tony Abbott was Prime Minister.

But she said Donald Trump’s rise to power had given her plenty of fodder to rewrite and tweak the play since.

“I’ll put it down when it’s no longer relevant, but I just keep finding moments of parody.”

But most of all the cheeky, fourth-wall breaking play had to be fun, she said.

“There’s nothing more addictive than seeing people burst into laughter.”

Anastasia strips Antoinette’s character bare in this burlesque satire - a genre she described as “liberating”.

“I think it’s a good thing to have this bodypositive attitude. But I really want the core of the work to be words and the story.”

Her fascination with cabaret began as an 18-year-old.

“I certainly jumped headlong into the burlesque scene without meaning to,” she said.

“I grew up in Adelaide and I used to put on these variety nights.”

“I always really wanted to make a difference in the world. I went travelling around Europe and realised so many things I needed to say.”

Anastasia began writing musical pieces “beyond my singing ability“, so she trained herself to sing.

She spoke to the Indy having just finished performing her latest show at Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Her voice had held out during six weeks of performing, but was “a bit worse for wear” Monday morning.

“I promise my voice is going to sound better Saturday,” she rasped. “I’ve got vocal chords of steel - they only fall apart when they know they can.”

Despite having performed Torte E Mort for crowds of up to 2500 for the past two years, she was excited to play at The Potato Shed Saturday.

“I really love an intimate setting for cabaret,” she said. “(Torte E Mort) would definitely suit a venue that’s going for edgier programming.”

Clifton Springs music veteran Jill Meehan will bring her Celtic folk to Karingal’s Eastern Hub for the community centre’s first anniversary Saturday.

“I really believe in what they’re doing there,” she said.

The 56-year-old singer-songwriter has released 30 albums and has been teaching music and performing since she was 15.

Meehan grew up in Melbourne, with her musical parents and Irish roots inspiring her love of Celtic folk.

“We used to sit around the piano and singing along to mum playing, and dad used to play piano accordion,” she said.

Meehan moved to Clifton Springs in 2008. She said singing at the anniversary celebrations was her way of giving back to the centre.

“I actually run a music and poetry group there once a month. They’ve been very welcoming and accommodating - they’re great people.”

Meehan will join local artists The Sugarbells, Jon Willard and the Mini Maestros in donating their time for the event.

Eastern Hub has hosted functions for Geelong’s business leaders, community groups, notfor-profit organisations and local government agencies.

But helping people with a disability to learn and grow has been its primary focus, said Karingal chief executive officer Mike McKinstry.

“In many ways, the hub has exceeded our expectations and we want to see this community space further its reputation as a go-to venue for a range of events,” he said.

Here for hearing Many of us remember our mother saying: “Don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear!”

Anyone would think that was an odd thing to say without really stopping to think about it.

Mardi, ear nurse from Crystal Clear Ears, Geelong, says that ears are lined with sensitive, thin skin, and quietly go about gathering earwax.

If anyone puts something smaller than their elbow (like a cotton bud) in there they are likely to push the whole lot further in or accidently scratch the ear.

Ears have wax for a reason. It helps protect them from infection.

Some people have a natural problem with wax build up, which is a hereditary problem, not a sign

of failing to clean them.

Ears are designed to naturally push out the wax, but for some people, this just doesn’t work.

Hearing aids, ear plugs or using ear buds for music, prevent the wax from coming out naturally.

Mardi, who uses a water-free, gentle technique to remove wax, says it is amazing how often she sees people who don’t even realise they have a blocked ear.

They feel itchy in the ear, or their family complains that they are not hearing well.

’Brilliant’ home care: seniors Ruth Wilson cannot speak highly enough of the home care support she and her husband Ross receive from Uniting AgeWell.

Ruth, the primary carer for her husband, who has Parkinson’s disease, said the support they received from the not-for-profit senior services organisation was a big help.

“We started receiving assistance through a home care package three years ago, and I have no other way of describing the service other than it is brilliant,” she said.

“Once a week someone comes over to mow the lawn, tend to the garden and clean the floor, giving me time to look after Ross.”

Ruth said the support they received enabled them to continue living independently at home.

“The client advisor pops in regularly and always has our best interests at heart, keeping us updated with government changes, looking out for us and making sure everything is

COMMUNITY: Local students take Sea Views Manor residents for an outing in Ocean Grove.

Serene Sea Views Bringing the “community into the home” is the most important part of aged care, says Sea Views Manor’s Glenn Chidzey.

The home’s lifestyle co-ordinator is always searching for ways to keep his residents connected with Ocean Grove.

“The last thing you want when you come into care is to be isolated,” Glenn says.

“Our residents like to be involved in the community, and why shouldn’t they be, they’re citizens of the area and they want to know what’s going on.”

Recently, Bellarine Secondary College students pushed residents’ wheelchairs for an outing in town.

“The kids were wonderful,” Glenn says. “They interact really well with them.”

Local students are regularly at the home, with several Grade 6 students visiting for a Rotary leadership program.

“Some (residents) have built an ongoing relationship with the student.”

The home’s 150 residents love to contribute through fund-raisers like Daffodil Day and the Biggest Morning Tea. “We have a lady who knits little cats for the medical clinic to give to kids when they have a needle. Sea Views Manor is part of Ocean Grove.”

The seaside town is the perfect location for the manor, Glenn says.

“It’s still got that small town feel. I will take a resident out for a walk in the street and they will see someone they know.”

Recently, 17 residents entered 35 artworks in the Bellarine Agricultural Show, with Bob Harrington winning first prize for his stunning tapestry work.

“It’s more than just bingo,” Glenn says, “There’s always something happening in the home.”

Horlin-Smith to miss the game - by rule of thumb

George Horlin-Smith will miss Saturday’s game against the Demons after kicking the match-winning goal in the Cats thrilling one-point victory against the Kangaroos.

Horlin-Smith fractured his thumb during a high tackle which led to the free kick that clinched the come-from-behind victory.

“It was actually in the last contest,“ said Cat’s coach Chris Scott, “The adrenalin was pumping and he didn’t think it was too bad, especially when he kicked the last goal.”

Saturday’s match at Etihad will again be a tall order for the Cats’ ruckman, this time against the AFL’s best Max Gawn.

“Gawn obviously presents some challenges,” Scott said.

The opposition have smashed Geelong’s rucks in the last two rounds, leaving the Cats with the worst hit-out differential in the AFL. Sandilands dominated the ruck in Geelong’s game against Fremantle, while Braydon Preuss beat Rhys Stanley and Mark Blicavs 54-21, with Told Goldstein out injured.

With the third-man up option banned, the Cats even resorted to not contesting boundary

throw-ins inside 50 in the last quarter against North Melbourne.

But the tactic was effective at locking the ball in the forward half, with Preuss appearing unsure whether to tap, or grab the football and risk being caught holding the ball.

Tom Hawkins struggled early in the game and gave away a number of free kicks, but Scott was confident the strong forward could tighten his game Saturday.

“Tom used his body really well to mark the ball a few times on the weekend, so occasionally when he oversteps that mark I think we can all live with that part of it,” he said.

“It’s when you’re completely out of the contest and you give away a really sloppy one. The way the modern game’s played keeping the ball your forward half is really important.”

But the Demons have their own problems with former Hawk Jordan Lewis and young star foward Jesse Hogan likely to miss the game.

The match review panel offered Lewis a threematch suspension for striking Carlton midfielder Patrick Cripps and Hogan a two-game suspension for striking Sam Rowe.

“It’s only logical to acknowledge they’ve been really good players for them,” Scott said.

“But they’ve got some pretty good players waiting in the wings. They don’t want for depth in the midfield.”

“They’re going to be really hard to beat.

They’ve been really good around the ball.”

Scott will also have a dilemma with star backman Harry Taylor.

While Taylor presents a strong marking option up forward, he didn’t make an impact on the game until the Cats moved him back.

Scott refused to comment on continued speculation on the future of former Cat and champion Gary Ablett.

“It’s a Gold Coast issue and a Gary Ablett issue.”

Meanwhile, Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield earned yet more praise this week after dragging their side to victory.

Former Essendon star and Matthew Lloyd has praised the Cats stars during the week.

“These two are absolute champions of the game and they didn’t want to lose,“ Lloyd said on AFL.com.au’s Access All Areas on Monday morning.

“They said, ’We’ve got to do whatever it takes to win.’ It made me want to play again ... because I would love to play with these two players.“

The edges of Corio Bay hosted plenty of Australian salmon in feeding frenzies over the past week.

Anglers who spotted birds working over the schools had little trouble boating fish just over 1kg after casting into the commotion.

Small three-inch soft plastics such as Gulp minnows worked well on 1/8oz jig heads.

Good numbers of pinkie snapper and flathead were taken under the salmon schools, with fish to 40cm common.

Land-based anglers fishing the rocks at St Helens boat also landed pinkies, especially on bluebait.

Anglers fishing off Clifton Springs crossed paths with snapper reaching 6kg.

Key to success was to keep moving until sounding up a school, then deploying lightly weighted baits like pilchard or squid.

Whiting kept anglers along the Curlewis Bank entertained with some bag-limit captures.

Last weekend’s King Of The Rip pitted competitors against tough conditions, with the weigh-in featuring gummy sharks and snapper from around the Bellarine Peninsula.

Swan Bay was ideal for getting out of the weekend’s wintery blast. Silver trevally, whiting, pinkies and the odd gummy shark were boated although strong tides made fishing difficult at times due to excesses of floating weed.

Around the corner, large whiting schooled on the grass beds east of the Queenscliff Harbour.

Tenderised squid on a running sinker rigs produced whiting well over 40cm.

This weekend looks like presenting some windy conditions, so sheltered areas of Wurdee Boluc should be worth fishing with spoon-type lures for trout and redfin. Kids should target the trout stocked in Highton’s St Augustine’s Water Hole, using Powerbait on running sinker rigs.

Saltwater fishos could try the surf beaches for salmon or the Barwon River estuary for elephant fish and mulloway.
