School’s gridlock By Bonny Burrows
A school bus tries to sneak between parked cars.
A typical morning outside Officer Primary School.
Officer Primary School parents say a shortage of parking is leading to traffic mayhem at pick-up and drop-off times. Tivendale Road may be quiet during off-peak, but parents Kate Thompson and Joanne Yeats said it is an accident waiting to happen between 8am and 9am and 2pm and 4pm weekdays. Motorists travelling on the opposite site of the road to dodge idling cars dropping off children and heavy trucks squeezing through the narrow roads are just some of the daily traffic hazards, they said. They believe the situation is partly due to the addition of two newer schools in the area and a lack of dedicated school parking that forces most parents to use neighbouring businesses car parks. Ms Thompson choses to drop her children off and pick them up around the corner along the Princes Highway. “It may not be the best thing to do but it’s probably safer in a way to let them walk instead of battling the traffic,” she said. Parents want a solution, and Cardinia Shire Council is “aware of the ongoing congestion issues”, however it said there was only so much it could do. “There are physical limitations with what can be accommodated in the current road layout at this point in time,” Cardinia Shire Council’s manager of infrastructure services Andrew Barr said. Mr Barr said Tivendale Road would be reconstructed and widened as identified in the council’s Officer Precinct Structure Plan, “however the timing of future upgrades to Tivendale Road will be largely dependent on interest and investment by private developers”. Parking at primary school sites was managed by the Department of Education and Training, he said. “Council is the responsible authority for managing Tivendale Road to maintain a safe suitable road environment for all road users, however this does not include the school properties,” Mr Barr said. The Department of Education and Training did not respond to questions from the Gazette.

Paws for school holiday dog day
Cr Amanda Stapledon, Mayor Sam Aziz, MPLCC President Kevin Harris and MPLCC CEO Jan Gilchrist celebrate as Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre marks 25 years.
Centre of learning By Victoria Stone-Meadows There were many reasons to celebrate at the Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre on Thursday 30 March. The centre officially marked the opening of the $1.15 million expansion to the building as well as celebrated 25 years of community learning and engagement. As the community of Cranbourne North has grown over the years, the community centre is in need of the
upgrade to meet the ever- expanding needs of the residents. The upgrade has new counselling suites, a modernised external facade, a new reception area and administration space, an upgraded commercial kitchen, additional bathroom amenities including an ambulant disabled bathroom with shower and upgrades to the main hall and children’s rooms. “MPLCC is one of Casey’s busiest community facilities,” Casey mayor Sam Aziz said.
“More than 1000 Casey residents visit the centre each week to participate in adult and youth education programs, access the childcare programs or make a booking with the centre’s counselling services.” “Council recognises the importance of providing community, sporting and educational facilities for our residents and the positive contribution facilities like MPLCC make to the well-being of individuals and ultimately of the whole community.”
The Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre caters for adult and VCAL education as well as short courses and meeting spaces for community groups. “We’re proud to deliver a range of improvements for all those who access this highly valued facility, and the team at MPLCC are excited to be able to deliver new and innovative programs for the local community,” Cr Aziz said.

Big upgrade for Year 9 kids A new state-of-the-art facility will support Beaconshills College Pakenham in delivering its specialised Year 9 program. Work has begun on the $5.7 million Year 9 centre at the Toomuc Valley Road campus, which will feature six general purpose and two specialist classrooms, a large multi-purpose area for lectures, exhibitions and meetings, designated spaces for music and audiovisual production classes and landscaping. Jointly funded by the school and State Government, the facility will be used by middle secondary students as part of the school’s specialised Year 9 program, the first of its kind in Victoria. Introduced 20 years ago, the program aims to minimise disengagement from education which typically occurs around the Year 9 age group. College Headmaster Tony Sheumack said the original centre, which opened in 1996, had served its purpose well, but was well past its intended lifespan. “I am proud of the fact our Year 9 program was the first dedicated, on-campus program of its type in Victoria,” Mr Sheumack said. “The college recognised 18 years ago that Year 9 was a time when students could disengage from learning. “It’s also a critical time when they really begin to examine their own philosophies, attitudes and identity as they move into adulthood. “What grew from this is the incredible Year 9 program we have today.” Mr Sheumack said children from the college’s early learning centre would also benefit from the upgrade, with the area to be re-developed to create an attractive natural habitat for its ‘bush kinder’ program. The centre will include rainwater harvesting systems and a large solar installation, as well as energy efficient lighting and environmental controls. Construction of the long-awaited project officially began last week, with Gembrook MP Brad Battin joining the school for the turning of the first sod of earth. The new building will be ready for the start of Term 2, 2018.
Turning the first sod on Beaconhills' new Year 9 centre are Head of Year 9 (Pakenham Campus) Graham Broderick, student Brenton Hathaway, State Member for Gembrook Brad Battin, student Rebecca Thorpe and campus principal Suzanne McChesney.

Goats found, arrest made Six goats that disappeared from a McGregor Road property in Pakenham South have been returned to their owners, after police executed a search warrant and made an arrest on Wednesday 29 March. Detective Senior Constable Trudy Neylan said a search warrant was executed at an address in Pakenham South, resulting in the arrest of a 37-year-old man who was charged in relation to the goats’ theft and other matters. Det Sen Const Neylan said the investigation was still continuing. “We are encouraging anyone who has further information to make contact with police or call Crime Stoppers,” she said. The goats, named Ana, Elsa, Milly, Sunday, Robbie and Gypsy disappeared in two separate
overnight incidents between 18 and 20 March. At 3pm on Wednesday 29 March owners Jessica and Michael Woolf received a much-awaited call from Pakenham police asking them to identify six goats. With all their goats back home safe and sound, the Woolf family are relieved that their 11-day ordeal is over. Mr Woolf said he was surprised at the return. “When something goes missing you don’t expect to see it again, especially when it is an animal," he said. Ms Woolf said she was grateful to have the goats back. “We are so happy that they are now home,” Ms Woolf said. She said their Toggenberg male goat was also glad he “has his girlfriends back.”

They are also thankful for the police assistance which has brought their much-loved pets home. “We are grateful to the Pakenham police for all their help,” Ms Woolf said.

Stolen car, driver spotted at car yard
Luke a big loser for daughter By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne locals have no doubt spotted a familiar face in the newest season of the popular reality TV series The Biggest Loser. Luke King, the sales and sponsorship manager for the Cranbourne turf club, decided to become a contestant on the show to be a better role model for his two-year-old daughter. “I think that any child deserves a parent that is healthy and active,” he said. “It is always in the back of my mind knowing she is an active toddler it’s important for me to get my act into gear and be best healthy role model I can possibly be.” Weight loss and the lifestyle change necessary to achieve these kinds of goals are usually a very personal journey and Mr King said it was not a light decision to share his story on television. “It was a bit of a tough decision to do it in any case, let alone in front of the nation,” he said. “I had been training for a long time but had not seen any kind of results so my trainer, ex-Commonwealth boxer Julian Holland put it in my head I needed a total life change.” “I saw an ad for The Biggest Loser and decided it was time for change and to make the improvement I wanted to see and that I have been working towards for 10 or 15 years.” Although the program has only just start-
ed on TV, Mr King said the experience so far had been very rewarding. “I found the whole experience really worthwhile,” he said. “It’s a really tough slog but up to this stage I have officially lost 6.8 and 3.3 kilograms in the two weigh-ins.” Before starting his journey with The Biggest Loser, Mr King said it would have taken him a lot longer to lose that much weight. “To have lost that amount of weight beforehand could have taken me up to a year at one point.” “It’s been amazing to see that sort of result and my improved fitness and leaning key things like diet is a great thing for me.” While Mr King said he loved the experience of being on The Biggest Loser, he had a long way to go to reach his goal of getting back to his sporting-fit weight. “At this stage things are only just gearing up and we’ve just lost the first challenge in the orange team,” he said. One member of the orange team that Mr King is a member of was eliminated and sent home from the show on Wednesday night 29 March. “It’s definitely tough but we are all improving together and my fitness is starting to lift to a level I haven’t had for a long time.” Catch Luke King’s journey and the rest of the action from The Biggest Loser: Transformed on Chanel 10 Mondays to Thursdays at 1pm.

Police have released footage of a man they wish to speak to as well as a Holden sports sedan stolen from a Cranbourne East home on 11 March. Casey CIU detectives say burglars broke into a house and stole the silver HSV GTS sedan from its garage on Muirfield Close about 7am while the owners were on holiday. Two days later, the stolen car and a man were captured on CCTV footage as the car’s occupants scoured through several cars at a car yard in Pakenham at 8pm. The car yard’s owner and son, alerted by an alarm, observed the HSV parked in the business’ driveway. The stolen car and its occupants fled and were chased by the car yard owner in his own vehicle before the cars collided in a nearby court. The HSV driver, described as of Islander appearance, solid build and bald, drove from the scene. The stolen car was found burnt-out on Loch-Wonthaggi Road, Almurta, on 15 March. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au. Right: CCTV of an alleged male intruder at a Pakenham car yard on 13 March. Below: The HSV GTS Holden sedan. Zoos Victoria speakers took the air out of wildlife unfriendly balloon celebrations in a talk with Berwick Chase Primary School students on 30 March. According to the zoo’s campaign, released or escaped balloons in oceans and waterways can become a hazard for birds such as the migratory flesh-footed shearwater. The parents have been found to feed the rubbish to their chicks, leading to sometimes-fatal starvation. Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley attended the meeting where Zoos Victoria speakers suggested alternatives such as blowing bubbles, paper balloons, bunting, kits, candles, planting a tree and floating flowers. Or alternatively, balloons could be contained indoors and disposed in the bin. Details: zoo.org.au/balloons

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Berwick railway station’s overflowing car park will receive 40 extra spots by December, the State Government has announced. But until then, there will be no relief from City of Casey’s parking officers for punished commuters such as Danielle Soobaroyen. Ms Soobaroyen had told Star News on 30 March how she couldn’t afford to go to work and risk paying a fine due to a lack of all-day parking spots near the station from 7.20am. Her tale struck a chord with many readers. One offered to anonymously pay Ms Soobaroyen’s most recent $78 parking infringement, others called for a multi-level car park at the station or a commuter parking permit system. Ali Uding wrote on the Cranbourne Berwick News’s Facebook page that she was in the same situation as Ms Soobaroyen - unable to get to the station earlier due to child care. “I also panic that I won’t get a park and can’t get to work. It’s unacceptable and something needs to be done about this issue urgently. “There needs to be more local jobs so we are not all commuting to the city.” Others reported they regularly scored a car park at the station up to 7.15am or an onstreet parking spot up until 7.45am. Some suggested that Casey Council waive parking fines until the 40-space car park upgrade was finished.

Danielle Soobaroyen says she's sick of paying a parking fine to commute from Berwick train station. 166619 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS City of Casey transport strategic advisor Paul Hamilton said there would be no change to the parking regime. “Council understands commuter’s frustrations but we also have to consider residents living near railway stations and the impacts that parking in residential streets has on them. “While we welcome any additional parking, we will continue to advocate to the State Government for improved public transport services including better bus connections to the stations to help address the parking concerns.” Public Transport Users’ Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said providing car spaces was an expensive solution and would never meet demand. “It is critical that the government provide other options for getting people to the station. Better pedestrian and bicycle paths and secure cages will help, and frequent connecting
buses are vital. “It means that people who can’t drive can easily access train services, and saves families money if they can reduce the number of cars in the household.” The State Government announced the car park upgrade on 31 March, including CCTV, bright lights and better drainage. Works will begin in July as part of the government’s upgrading of 17 station car parks across the state. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said the upgrade will “make a real difference” for local commuters by “reducing the daily scramble to get a park and get the train”. According to 2014 PTV data, nearly 2000 commuters use the station prior to 9.30am on weekdays. About half of the station’s weekday commuters were driving their cars to get there before 9.30am.

On 29 March, the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page published a story about a woman who had cancelled going into work in the Melbourne CBD because she could not find a car space at the Berwick train station. A situation familiar to many of our readers, here is how you shared in the frustration of trying to find a park in the busy streets and car parks of Casey: Leanne Boots: I live near a school and a park. It’s the same. You can’t get in and out of your own drive way to go for an appointment, you either have to leave early or you have to park on the street. It’s disgusting and parents don’t even care. I am sure when I had children at school I never parked were I shouldn’t have. Parents have no respect. Dieter Koch: And Metro are telling us that they are increasing services to enable more patrons to travel. There are no car parks for this and the bus services in the area are terrible as it’s all affected by the ridiculous amount of traffic. Tony O’Hara: Berwick is just one of many with this problem. When dropping grandkids at school, I have noticed the parked cars extending further and further away from the station. The State government should look at overthe-top of the rail or multi-storey parking. The sale of released land would almost certainly pay for it. Sue Baldizoni: Terrible state of affairs! Same issue with all the local schools! They build schools right smack in the middle of an estate with no provision for designated marked parking! I quite often can’t move in or out of my home at school time, people scrambling to get a park, blocking driveways, parking on nature strips, small streets all congested! Poor poor planning! Berwick is in gridlock in every direction at school times! Ali Uding: Yes I too am in the same situation and I have to get to the station earlier but can’t due to childcare. I also panic that I won’t get a park and can’t get to work. It’s unacceptable and something needs to be done about this issue urgently. There needs to be
more local jobs so we are not all commuting to the city. Rhiannon Dempster: I park there every day during the week and get a park up until 7.10am. I’ve never had to park in the street. There is always parks on the platform 2 side which is being spoken about here. The other side is a bit of a different story. Aleksandra Samardzic: It’s not only Berwick. Being a daily commuter (Dandenong - South Melb), I too have been fined a lot for not parking in the ’bays’. Now the issue is another 10-30 cars could fit if they repainted the bays. Prior to getting my licence, I was forced to catch a bus, train and tram. The bus
Ray’s
say
would always be late causing me to miss my trains and trams. I was then forced to catch a 6.25am bus meaning I was ALWAYS way to early at work. Now that I drive, I still have to leave my house at 7.15am and still can’t find parking and still suffer a whole journey standing in a crowded train (still beats paying $40 a day on parking + toll and petrol). One day as PT officers were fining me I asked them what was a solution to avoid this. They couldn’t provide a practical solution and it was ’my fault’. Maybe building multiple level parking at bigger stations (eg - Berwick, Dandenong, Springvale, Oakleigh) to ease pressure on other stations? Or just let people be!

Story of love By Cam Lucadou-Wells Adlib Theatre’s young troupe will perform the folklorish love story Beauty and the Beast in the April school holiday period. The Berwick-based cast aged 9 to 22 - will perform the wild tale of whether a heroine could find true love and break a spell that had cursed a castle for many years. It will inspire an audience to “walk away humming the tunes to these new and outstanding songs”, says theatre spokeswoman Michelle Robertson. Children in the audience can meet and get autographs from their favourite characters after the show, she said. The theatre’s directors, Donna and Peter Dowler, created an original script, score and lyrics for the musical.

Year 5 at St Paul’s is something special
As has long been the tradition in many independent schools, many of our region’s families are now choosing to move their child to St Paul’s at the start of Year 5. The latter years of primary school are critical in establishing the conidence, learning habits and resilience that set a child up for success in secondary school and beyond. At St Paul’s our curriculum programs and activities are designed with this in mind. Whether it be developing their leadership capabilities through the ‘Rock and Water’ program, experimenting and investigating in the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
Centre, being challenged to think and work as part of a team through Robotics and RoboCup, mastering a new language, inding a new interest through the Brass and Woodwind Program or discovering a passion for the Arts, the staff at St Paul’s are able to guide and encourage your child to try new things and achieve their best. Academic, Sport and Performing Arts Scholarships are currently open for those with speciic abilities in these ields, while those students who are excellent ‘all rounders’ are encouraged to apply for a Merit Scholarship. We invite you to make an appointment to come and see Year 5 in action. We’d love to show you around.

Dozen categories of business excellence The 2017 Casey Cardinia Business Awards are back for another fantastic year to recognise the best and brightest in our business community. The awards will cover 12 separate categories as well as the coveted Casey Cardinia Business of the Year Award and People’s Choice Award. All businesses in the region are encouraged to apply for the awards with nomination open until Wednesday 31 May 2017. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the awards aimed to recognise and celebrate the best in business across the region. “The Casey Cardinia region has a thriving business community and these awards are a chance to celebrate and recognise the contribution businesses make to our region,” he said. “Businesses provide local jobs, boost our economy, deliver great services and products to our residents close to home,
and even represent us on a global scale.” “Entering the awards is a great business development opportunity, providing a chance to be recognised, receive publicity, network and establish relationships with other local businesses and business leaders and gain feedback from industry experts.” Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen said even the application process provided a chance for businesses to reflect on their contribution to the South-East. “The application process itself is beneficial to business owners as preparing the submission provides a chance to step back and review your business, highlight your achievements and the areas that are working well, outline your future aspirations, and determine what could be improved,” he said. “The People’s Choice Award is back in 2017, and I encourage members of the community to jump online to nominate a local business that impresses and inspires you.”
The Categories for the 2017 Casey Cardinia Business Awards are: Agriculture and Food Business and Professional Services Health, Education and Wellbeing Home-based Business Hospitality Manufacturing New Business Retail Social Enterprise Tourism Trades and Construction Environmental Sustainability People’s Choice Award Finalists will be announced at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast on Wednesday 6 September 2017, and winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner on Friday 27 October 2017 at the Cranbourne Racing Centre. The Ripe for Change Small Grants Program will make Casey’s local food systems more sustainable. 166647
12344907-PB14-17
By Victoria Stone-Meadows
The Ripe for Change Small Grants Program will be providing up to $10,000 to innovative food system projects in the Casey Council area. Ripe for Change is a philanthropic initiative which aims to make the Victorian food system more sustainable. Its goal is to address complex food issues by taking a localised approach. The new grants program is the first of its kind and is being trialled through the Casey Cardinia Foundation, with applications invited from Casey, Cardinia and the Mornington Peninsula. Executive Officer of the Casey Cardinia Foundation Therese Howell said the small grants program was an exciting opportunity to further support the community by enabling philanthropic funds into the region. “We’re encouraging innovative projects that collaborate with other groups and organisations,” Ms Howell said. “We’re looking to inspire groups and organisations to think outside the square and look at their potential to do great things in this space.” Funding for the grants program is being provided through
the Australian Environment Grantmakers Network (AEGN). AEGN Giving Green manager Esther Abram said the Ripe for Change grants were a terrific opportunity for Community groups in Casey to get funding support for work to improve the local food system. “Community interest in sustainable food has grown, but there hasn’t been much funding available. Ripe for Change is hoping to address this gap," she said. Australian Community Philanthropy executive officer Kate Buxton said the Casey Cardinia Foundation had demonstrated leadership and innovation in their work on the Ripe for Change Small Grants Program. “It’s a fantastic example of collaboration, and I’m really excited to see the Casey Cardinia Foundation leading the way,” she said. Applications for the grants will be open until Friday 21 April. Visit the Ripe for Change Small Grants Program website for more information and application guidelines: www.caseycardiniafoundation.org/grants/

East Tracie Schmutter with a mocked-up NBN node cabinet in front of her home. 166460 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Tracie wins battle of the front lawn By Cam Lucadou-Wells It was a win seemingly out of the box. Narre Warren South resident Tracie Schmutter has succeeded in fighting NBN Co plans to install a large National Broadband Network node cabinet in the middle of her front lawn on Portree Place. The “massive” cabinet will be built around the corner in Galloway Drive, rather than the council-owned nature strip next to Ms Schmutter’s unfenced front yard. Ms Schmutter said she could have given up after being initially told the site couldn’t be changed unless there were “life threatening or safety issues”.
“If it’s something you believe in, you explore all avenues to fight it. “At every turn and every objection I put into NBN, it looked like I had little hope. “It seemed that they could do whatever they like.” She said it would be unlikely that she would have been allowed to build a similar-sized garden shed on the site. “I would have had to apply to the local council and they would say you can’t put it there, it would be an eye-sore.” Ms Schmutter said her property would have faced “substantial devaluation” from the NBN’s green peril - despite receiving high internet speeds due to the proximity of the node.
“I hope I still get reasonable internet speeds (from the Galloway Drive node).” She had earlier been told by NBN that sites were chosen mainly according to being able to “efficiently maintain the (NBN) infrastructure to service the surrounding homes.” “While (NBN) appreciates that the selected locations may not be the preference for everyone, unfortunately aesthetic concerns or front lawn parking are not a means to relocate a node.” An NBN spokesman said the company had been in discussions with the resident and succeeded in finding an alternative site that met “our network design parameters”.

MONOMEITH
SIGNIFICANCE OF 'MONOMEITH PARK' FROM PAGE 1 MONOMEITH Park, a substantial and historically significant rural holding of some 565 acres (three titles), in the outer south eastern Melbourne region, lies in what is widely recognised as being among the finest grazing country in Australia. It is steeped in rich history from early settlement days, when Monomeith was initially settled and established as a much larger tract of grazing farmland stretching across the greater part of Monomeith and Caldermeade. Hundreds of prime bullocks were driven in mobs for many years on the long trek from Monomeith to the Newmarket saleyards, a feat ably taken care of by the well-known character “little” Billy Matthews who reputedly drove the Monomeith mob by himself. In 1886, Monomeith was subdivided by auction when other local families, still farming the area, including Glasscocks, purchased various portions of the holding.
It was noted that at that time the Bourke family retained the finer portion of this renowned grazing holding and this is captured in the following extract from the book “Memoirs of a Stockman” by Harry Worthington Peck: “However, the Bourke brothers at Old Monomeith Homestead of some 2000 acres have today the pick of the estate carrying some 3000 cattle of mixed ages and all fattening. This is probably a record for the Commonwealth and proves the virtue of top-dressing even on the richest natural pastures”. The property continues a long and proud history from late 1800s spanning three generations of the Bourke family who had originally owned large land holdings around Pakenham. That tradition of producing prime beef cattle for both the local and export markets continues to this day. The property can also proudly boast the honour of having been graced by the presence of Australia’s Cattle King, Sir Sidney Kidman on both social and

business occasions. Monomeith Park is situated approximately 85km from Melbourne and 110km from the international airport via the M1 freeway and in close proximity to the major commercial centres of Casey and Cardinia, schools and shopping and only a short distance from the leading racing centres of Cranbourne and the new “world class, state of the art” Pakenham Racing complex in Tynong. MASSIVE DISPLAY VILLAGE THE latest in cutting-edge housing designs have proven a major drawcard at Berwick Waters, with well over 1000 people turning out for the launch of the area’s biggest display village. Local residents and the wider community flocked to the unveiling on Sunday, with most of the state-of-the-art 53 homes from 22 builders showcased at the development. The flagship display village - the largest in the City of Casey - caught the imagination of families, couples and singles alike, who were able to view a kaleidoscope of innovative new design trends and dream of their future homes. The opening kicked off with a family fun day featuring kid’s favourite Peppa Pig, DJs, a giant slide, Thomas the Tank Engine ride, a petting zoo, sausage sizzle and DJs. Art and craft, a Jurassic Park-themed jumping castle, face painters, balloon twisters and food and coffee vans also made the day memorable. Berwick Waters is a joint development by Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia, and more than 500 of the eventual 2500 homes have been built to date. Sarah Bloom, Frasers Property’s general manager Residential Victoria, said the event was a roaring success, giving locals and those further afield the chance to explore a one-stop-shop in the modern housing advances. It was also a chance for the community to mingle, meet their future neighbours, and build new relationships. “We were overwhelmed by the interest in the display village, people found it exciting to wander through and find different designs that suit their personal styles or tastes,” she said. “We wanted to launch it with a family

Girls finally break hoodoo The Warriors come together at centre court after their droughtbreaking win over the Pacers.
By Russell Bennett “It was 749 days from our first game at Casey when we had more turnovers than points, to last night.” Pakenham Warriors Youth League women’s coach Darren Thomas knows exactly how long it was before a Big V team he coached at the club finally won a game. It was June 2014 that Pakenham started the ball rolling on its Big V senior women’s project, and in March the following year came an 80-point loss to Casey ... a game in which Pakenham recorded more turnovers than points. The Warriors’ senior women went through their entire existence without a win, but now coaching the first season of Pakenham’s Youth League women’s team, Thomas is finally a winner once again. Victory has never tasted as sweet as it did on Saturday night at Mill Park - a 21-point triumph over the Whittlesea Pacers, 81-60. “For last night to happen, look, obviously it’s a very different group,” Thomas said on Sunday. “Jaime Armstrong is the only one who’d played previously (on the women’s team). “Still, the other 10 girls who were there understood where we’d come from and the work that had gone into getting our program to that point. It was pretty exciting, and that team song was amazing.” The Youth League team fits much better with Pakenham’s young talent rising through the ranks than the senior women’s side did. “We didn’t have the depth in

across the weekend, Pakenham’s Division 2 men outlasted Craigieburn 100-97 on Saturday night with captain Ben Gaze racking up 37 points and Brad Szalek recording a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double. “What a hit-out that was,” coach Brent Russell said. “Some would look at the score of 100-97 and think no defence was played - but what a game. “Craigieburn was a solid unit and was shooting at some elite basketball percentages. We knew they were strong in that department offensively and worked on how we would cover it in the lead up to the game. “We executed the defensive strategy quite well - they just made shots. “Coming out with a win in a close game on their home court was great and the guys kept fighting again with another brilliant team effort - sticking together through all 40 minutes.” Simo Pajdic’s Youth League Men’s side went down to Craigieburn by a point - 7675 - on Saturday night, but rebounded on Sunday to record a 68-54 win at home over Melton in an entertaining clash. Lee Belton and Tobie Dean led the way with 16 and 15 points respectively, while skipper Jimmy Magrath had a near doubledouble with nine points and 10 boards.

our female program,” Thomas explained. “Last season we had seven junior teams playing VJBL and a lot of them were playing at a lower level. “We were fortunate that our 16 girls were playing in second division, but this year we’ve got our 18 girls playing in the top VC division, and you’re bringing in girls who’ve played against elite players in their age group. “That means they come into this and they’re not overawed or overpowered, and we can be competitive.” Sam Neil and Ellie Coutts are two out and out stars of the Warriors’ young set-up. They both had a huge impact in the Whittlesea win, while Neil was missing yesterday in a 10-point loss to Casey - 63-53. Coutts was again spectacular in that clash with 18 points, 17 rebounds, and 6 steals. “We’re getting better, and every time we play we’re expecting to win,” Thomas said in the wake of the loss to the Cavs. “We’re not happy anymore with just getting close. “The girls all walk away now disappointed with a loss, and that’s fantastic. “We’re moving in the right direction - the challenge is consistency.” In other Big V results from

Old foes in blockbuster By David Nagel Gaining a physcological edge over an equally-talented competitor is just one of the prizes on offer for Berwick and Cranbourne when the two powerhouse sides of the South East Football Netball League collide at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday. These two have broken the heart of the other over the last two years, Berwick winning the 2015 grand final before the Eagles turned the tables in an epic season-decider last year. But both teams will take a new look into this clash, Berwick with a new coach and new game plan under Stewart Kemperman while Cranbourne looked younger and quicker against Hampton Park last week. The biggest prize for Kemperman and his Cranbourne counterpart Simon Goosey is to gain knowledge and some intellectual property on what the other is trying to achieve. “They’re obviously learning a new system, defence comes first, and this week will give us a good look at how they’ve changed,” Goosey said. “It’s no secret to these clubs that we press pretty hard and it will be inter-

We’ve heard a little bit on the grapevine and I’ll watch a bit of video during the week to make sure we don’t get too surprised.” Kemperman realises this is a massive test for his club. “It’s the ultimate litmus test in this league at the moment,” a respectful Kemperman said. “They’ve got the runs on the board and they’ve beaten us the last three times we’ve played them. It’s probably
the perfect time to play them, early in the season, so we can see how our structures stack up and take that feedback and develop accordingly.” The preparation heading in is like chalk and cheese, the Eagles pumping the Redbacks by 184 points at Casey Fields on Saturday while the Wickers had to fight hard to survive a gripping arm-wrestle against Beaconsfield. Cranbourne unfurled its flag and some exciting young talent, with Jake Carosella and Brad Bigaignon making
their senior debuts and small-forward Khaled Kandakji making a lasting impression in his first game for the club. Kandakji kicked seven goals to live up to his exciting practice match form. “He’s a genuine crumber but having said that he probably took mark of the year in our last practice match as well,” Goosey said. “He comes from Oakleigh Districts and has been thereabouts but has probably never taken his footy as seriously as he should; he just wants to test himself at a better level of footy.” Hard-presenting forward Troy Tharle kicked five for the winners, Mat Fletcher four, while Bigaignon, Daniel Kitto and Luke Bee-Hugo snagged three apiece. Berwick’s Battle of the Creek victory over Beacy was exactly that - a real battle - the Wickers kicking four goals to one in the final term to run out three-goal winners. “They probably surprised us a little with how strong they were behind the footy, and that’s going to keep them in a lot of games this season,” Kemperman said. Michael Misso joined Corey Walker, Jake Bowd and Dan Hellyer as the
ROC wins battle against Doves By David Nagel The South East Football Netball League looks set for a startling metamorphosis after Cranbourne and ROC pulled off surprise upsets against two of last year’s finalists on Saturday. The Eagles proved far too strong for a disappointing Hampton Park at Casey Fields, winning 50-33, while the Kangaroos emerged victorious in the close one of the day, returning from Robinson Reserve with a gritty 48-44 triumph over Doveton. Throw in a much-improved performance from last year’s cellardweller Berwick, and a dominant display from Tooradin over Pakenham, and all sectors of the 2016 ladder look set for a reshuffle. ROC’s list has really suffered over the last few years with experience, but the Kangaroos welcomed back some familiar faces on Saturday and reaped the rewards against Doveton. The Kangaroos will have a bumper crop of juniors coming through in about 10 years’ time after the birth of child after child at the club. Sure it’s great for the future, but those baby bumps took many a fine player away from the netball court over the last few years. Returning from the maternity ward on Saturday were Amy Jones, Sarah Smith and Mel Overdyk, adding some real substance to the look of the Kangaroos around the court. Smith (GS) was in good touch under the ring, Jones (WA) quality through the midcourt, while Overdyk (GK) put her experience to good use to form a solid defensive unit with Laura Quinn (GD). The two gun mid-courters ROC’s Ash Barnett and Doveton’s Zali Mifsud - had an exciting battle throughout the day in the centre. Coach Liz Edwards and Shonalene San Jose threatened to post a winning score for the Doves but the Kangaroos held firm for a confidence-boosting victory. “Let’s call them the mature heads around the club, they were saying we just don’t win in round one so to do that was really satisfying,” said
ROC goaler Samantha Neil played a key role in the Kangaroos surprise win over Doveton. 166734 Picture: ROB CAREW new coach Sharon Hook. “We adjusted into the game style really well. Doveton play an aerial game, a physical game, and we stood up to that pressure and showed that the fitness work we’ve been doing over summer is really paying dividends.” Cranbourne’s victory over Hampton Park was also most impressive, the Eagles, the most stable list from 2016 taking on the revolving-door type approach from the Redbacks. Eagles’ coach Donna Wilson said going into the season that familiarity would be one her side’s greatest strengths -and it certainly panned
out that way. “We had a couple of things go against us that would have thrown us right out in the past but the girls just stood up,” Wilson said. Tegan Stahl was outstanding for the Eagles. The hype surrounding TooradinDalmore and its exciting crop of recruits appears to be right on the mark after the Seagulls scored the most emphatic victory of the day, 66-23, against Pakenham at Tooradin. The Gulls took a huge leap forward in 2016, going from a winless 2015 to playing finals, and appear to be on an upward curve once again. New recruits, Alex Maher, Jess Cox,
Sara Duncan and Bec Kinna all played major roles in the victory. And Beaconsfield has made a solid start to its 2017 campaign, winning 52-40 in the Battle of the Creek at Holm Park Reserve. Champion mid-courter Jasmine Jones (C) stepped straight back into the thick of the action for the Eagles, controlling her battle with Charlotte Tiplady in the first half. Boroondara recruit Emily Boribon (GA) teamed up well with goal-shooters Bianca Sanzaro and Courtney Davey, while Dani Cameron, Taylah Jencke and Britnee Tyers made life difficult for Berwick’s goalers. Narre Warren had the bye.
Eagles best contributors, while Bryce Rutherford and defenders Billy Arthurson, Bob Kemperman and Riley Heddles did a great job for the Wickers. Jayden Joyce also stood tall against the dangerous Beau Dowler. In other games, Doveton star Michael ‘Pickles’ Henry snagged five goals from the midfield as the Doves scored a 38-point victory over Officer at Robinson Reserve. Key-forward Taylor Joyce kicked three in his Doveton debut, while Jesse Longmuir matched that total for the Kangaroos. Big Russ Gabriel and Aaron Henwood joined Henry as the key playmakers for the day. And Tooradin has broken a fouryear drought against Pakenham after downing the Lions by five goals at Westernport Oval. Gun-recruit Luke McKenna was pivotal for the Gulls, matching motors with Lions-gun Steve O’Bryan. Andrew Dean kicked three, while Aisakie O’hAilpin was also influential around the ground. Youngster Liam Tyrrell played a blinder for the Lions.

 Reviews and news…
Little Mazda gets better By Ewan Kennedy Mazda CX-5 has been a hit in Australia from day one when it arrived here just over five years ago in February 2012. Now the second generation has been introduced. And the relentless series of improvements that drive the Japanese marque mean it exceeds the original in just about every area. The new CX-5 features a smoothing out of the original shape, almost to the extent of being minimalistic in its lines. It works exceptionally well to our eyes. At a time when many marques’ stylists are coming up with over complex details, Mazda might be leading the field in the next generation of automotive bodies. The CX-5’s grille is familiar, but different, and ties in with the lower areas. The doors have neat sculpting in their lower areas and the C-pillar treatment is interesting. If there’s one thing we aren’t keen on it’s the rather small rear lights. Inside, the central screen is a good size, the instruments are sporty in their layout and the dash sits quite a long way forward to give the visual appearance of added space. A new model has been added to the already comprehensive CX-5 range. Called the Touring, it sits between the Maxx Sport and GT. Potential buyers really are spoiled for choice as Mazda Australia is very keen to further increase its sales from the 115,000 that have hit Australia’s roads to date. There’s comfortable seating inside for four adults, with a fifth being possible without too
much hip and shoulder rubbing. However, it’s very much a 40:20:40 layout and may not suit all. The back seats can be set at two angles to let those back there assume their preferred position, as well as to juggle luggage and passenger space. Large armrests are a feature we really liked in the front. Boot space, at 442 litres, is good and easy to load, with a spacesaver being used to give added depth. Infotainment from the Mazda MZD Connect system via a 7.0-inch touchscreen includes AM and FM, as well as DAB+ radio. There’s Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio, Aux, and USB. Control is through steering wheel buttons for many functions, there’s also Mazda’s handy Comander rotary controller. Satellite navigation is optional on the CX-5 Maxx but standard on all other variants. Power comes from a range of engines, all using Mazda’s SkyActiv technology. Although based on the powerplants of the outgoing CX-5, they have significant improvements. The 2.2-litre turbo-diesel puts out up to 129 kW of power, with 420 Nm of torque at 2000 revs. The 2.0 petrol has 114 kW, and 200 Nm at a highish 4000 rpm. Note that Mazda Australia has again specified the engines be detuned slightly to suit Australia’s low-grade 91 octane standard petrol. Finally, there’s a 2.5-litre petrol producing 140 kW, and 251 Nm, again at 4000 rpm. A six-speed manual is on offer with the smaller petrol engine, all others have a six-speed automatic transmission and this unit is also mated to the 2.0-litre petrol when requested.. Minimalist style of the new Mazda CX-5 works brilliantly. by Mazda for the new CX-5’s launch took place in a complex route from the Gold Coast, inland through the hinterland and out to Beaudesert, finishing up in heavy-duty peak-hour traffic in Brisbane. Next day it was a trip north through outer suburban areas, then to Brisbane airport along the coast road, with the highlight being Redcliffe. Yes, that’s varied and realistic. We tried both the larger petrol and the turbo-diesel engine. The petrol was our preferred unit as its smooth, quiet and reacts fast to throttle inputs. While the turbo-diesel is quieter than average for its class it’s still audible from the outside, and has more turbo lag than we like.
The automatic is quick to sense driver demands and road conditions and shift to lower ratios when required. The new Mazda medium-large SUV is spacious, quiet and comfortable to ride in and able to cushion occupants from the rough ‘n’ ready backroads. Though this isn’t classed as a sporty machine we did find the steering and handling to be softer than we like. And there’s not a lot of feedback through the wheel. Again, try for yourself as part of the prepurchase test drive. New Mazda CX-5 will sell on style alone and while it’s marginally more expensive than the superseded model we feel it still provides excellent value. The Mazda range is available for test drive at Bruce Clough Mazda, Princes Highway, Nar Nar Goon, on 5942 5584.
