Playground torched Pakenham Springs Primary School’s playground remains out of bounds as police continue to investigate a fire that caused up to $60,000 damage. The playground equipment and shade sails were left charred by the fire which occurred between 7.30am and
8am on Saturday 18 March. The CFA were called to the incident after a resident heard unusual noises and saw the school’s Year 3 and 4 playground on fire. Police were notified and were also in attendance describing the damage as a “significant cost to the school.”

Senior Constable Ben Robinson said no-one was injured in the incident. “The cause of the fire is unknown and investigations are ongoing,” he said. Volunteers responded to the schools call for help to clean up the aftermath of the fire and ensure the playground was safe and secure for Monday morning.

Pakenham Springs Primary School principal Kerryn Baillie said the help was very much appreciated. “We are pretty upset by the loss of the equipment but we are grateful for the community support,” Ms Baillie said. She described the children as “disheartened and disappointed” to dis-
cover that their playground had been torched when they returned to school on Monday morning. Police interviewed two boys, aged 14 and 15, on Tuesday 21 March in connection with the fire but say they still needed witnesses to provide more information.
