Hoppers Crossing Secondary College HOPPERS Crossing Secondary College is a single campus, co-educational College with an enrolment of approximately 1,400 students. Great emphasis is placed on developing innovative and challenging educational programs, which is achieved by maintaining a close working relationship with the College community.

Dream big and be resilient in the face of adversity Our students are TOMORROW’S LEADERS. The College offers a structured student leadership program including a Student Representative Council (SRC) and established High Resolves Program. Opportunities exist for involvement in programs such as Youth Parliament and the School for Student Leadership. College Captains are involved in key decision-making at the College as members of the College Council and represent the student body in these decisions. Global leadership is also encouraged: three international opportunities (China, Italy and North America) allow students to develop leadership skills on a global platform. These programs see our students lead others in an international context.

Our students are SUCCESSFUL. In 2016 the school recorded its most impressive VCE results

in 32 years including a median study score of 29. The highest ATAR score achieved was 97.85 with another student obtaining a perfect 50 study score in one subject. We take pride in offering students guided support throughout their chosen pathway of VCE, VCAL or VET studies and prepare students for University, TAFE or employment options.

University Enhancement Studies are offered at the College and provide opportunities for students to incorporate tertiary studies within their VCE program. Over 80% of Year 12 students commencing tertiary studies in 2016 received their top tertiary preference.

Our students are DIGITAL LEARNERS. Information and Communications Technology is prioritized across the curriculum with the inclusion of interactive whiteboards or digital media projectors in every classroom.

Students are welcome to utilize their preferred learning technology, supported by our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. This is aimed to skill students to take their place as digital citizens.

Our students are PERFORMERS. A strong Performing Arts Program underpins a vast extracurricular offering. Our students are active participants in the Wakakirri Secondary Schools Challenge, a national dance competition whereby students choreograph routines, design costumes and assemble stage sets. The College was awarded Victorian Story of the Year in 2014, 2015 and 2016, in addition to a number of staging, performance and choreography accolades.

Bayside P-12 College BAYSIDE P-12 College has campuses in Williamstown, Newport and Altona North catering for students from prep to Year 12. Our culture is one of ambition and excellence in an inclusive and innovative learning environment.

Why our junior school?

Located at the Altona North Campus we cater for students in Prep to Year 6. What makes Bayside Junior School different to others in the area is the access our students have to specialist facilities and specialist teachers in Science, Technology, Performing Arts and PE. “I love Science because I get to work in a real science lab” Shan – Year 3 Students, parents and teachers often talk about the sheer joy of learning and teaching that takes place in our state of the art, technology rich, learning environments.

We cater for students from Years 7 to 9. All students participate in the Voyager Program. There are two middle schools at Bayside. One based at the Altona North Campus and the other at the Williamstown Campus. The Bayside Middle School Program has been designed to: recognise and provide for the learning needs of

Berwick College BERWICK College is celebrating its 40th year of educating students in the South East. Commencing in 1977, the strong foundation has been continued today as our students thrive, make a difference to our community, learn and grow each day The College aims to nurture students’ academic success and engagement by offering inclusive education systems, and pathways for accelerated learning. Specialised transition days and programs, together with regular meetings and collaboration with local primary schools help build a sense of connection and promote wellbeing for new students adjusting to the change to secondary schooling.

Berwick College offers pathways for accelerated learning including the High Achievers Program which runs from years 7-10. Berwick College is passionate about improving student learning and encouraging our students to make a difference in our school and community including supporting a charity that delivers social benefits to the community in Learning Teams or as a whole school for causes such as Casey Relay for Life. Our students in the Frost Learning Team were thrilled and honoured to be recognised for their fundraising efforts for the Leukaemia Foundation by the City of Casey as recipients of the 2017 Casey Australia Day Fundraising Award.

The College offers elite programs such as our Basketball Academy, which achieved both gold and silver medals at the 2016 Australian Schools Basketball Championships.

Students will experience an elite and specialised sports program providing unique future employment and career opportunities. Participants in the program also have the chance to tour the USA. Our Dance Academy is designed to prepare students for VCE Dance, VET Dance and Theatre Studies as well as the world of professional dance. Our dancers featured in the 2016 State Schools Spectacular including a principal dancer and ensemble dancer.

Numerous extra-curricular activities such as performing arts and instrumental music tuition are offered to nurture students’ talents and hobbies. Students are offered the opportunity to extend their learning and trek out of their comfort zone on a World Challenge trip to Vietnam, Cambodia or by travelling to Central Australia, Indonesia or Europe.

Our Year 7 to 9 programs build strong foundations for future success. We emphasise the core literacy and numeracy skills across all subjects in the curriculum and students access Spanish as their language study.

As they progress through the College, students have growing opportunities to refine their own pathways by selecting an increasing number of electives in Year 8, 9 and beyond.

Our Year 9 students have the opportunity to contribute to their world through the Connect Program. The Connect Program includes opportunities to participate in Leadership Development, City Experience, Duke of Edinburgh and cross-age tutoring programs/projects.

Ensuring our new Year 7 students are happy, secure and confident with a strong sense of belonging is a priority for all staff at Boronia K-12 College. They are supported by a dedicated team of experienced teachers in a cluster of rooms in our dedicated Learning Centre. It is within these spaces that the majority of Year 7 classes are held allowing students to develop a sense of ownership and pride over their environment and a sense of belonging and community amongst themselves and their teachers.

As students transition into later years (Years 10-12) the opportunities to refine their pathways open up and students are provided with a diverse range of subjects from all areas of the VCE/VET and VCAL curriculums. Year 10 students are encouraged to undertake VCE/VET units of study to assist in preparing them for the rigors of a full VCE/VET program the following year.

Dreaming the Impossible Dream Grossek’s view MY FATHER and I sat in a small office, nondescript in many ways, save for the clutter and sense of urgency that pervaded the atmosphere on that hot and humid January day. The teacher hustled about the room, shuffling papers and wiping the sweat from his brow. This was a big day for me. The following week I was about to start secondary school and my father was enrolling me at the local high school - at the time a prestigious country high school, affectionately known as The School on the Hill. The hilltop address of the high school was shared with the local technical school, though it was never referred to as such, that title belonged exclusively to the high school.

Despite sharing a geographical site, not much else was shared between the schools as far as I can recollect. Oh, from time to time, on occasions when our attention wandered from our studies, we were curtly reminded that it was a privilege to be attending the school on the hill, and that privilege could easily be forfeited were we not to refocus on our studies. The consequence? We would complete our studies at the technical school, with the clear inference being that any plans we may have had for attending university would be dashed. That was the sixties!

Fast forward to the eighties, by which time I was at the beginning of my career in senior leadership roles at a medium sized suburban primary school in Melbourne. Our school council president, a former AFL champion player and in retirement, a sports teacher at a prestigious private school introduced me to the brutality by which such schools massaged their reputations. Back then, he revealed, Year 12 students at that school did not only complete their studies at that school but in addition had to ‘earn the right’ to sit their Year 12 exams as a student of that school. Those that didn’t?

Well, they were off to the Exhibition Building in the city, sitting their Year 12 exams most certainly, but just as certainly not as students of that particular private school.

They sat as public students, belonging to no-one as it were and they would have known it.

Thirty years have passed and what’s changed? If the current debates that swirl around us in the media are any indication, very little that is good has occurred. Newspaper headlines such as; The reason schools lock students out of the VCE, ‘I deserve another chance’: the student no school wants, and ‘They thought I’d become a tradie’: Why schools lock students out of VCE, paint an alarming picture of current secondary school practice in some schools.

What is driving this problematic trend in education?

Back in the sixties as far as I can recollect headlines such as those appearing in our newspapers in recent times were nonexistent. It would appear that the practice of ‘dissuading’ students from sitting their VCE exams and encouraging them to seek the vocational alternative, the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a more recent strategy. Then there’s the ‘option’ provided by some schools to have students opt for an unscored VCE. That is, complete their VCE without receiving an Australian Tertiary

Admission Rank (ATAR), meaning that in effect they do not sit the end of year VCE examinations. Judging by the commentary, several possibilities would be at play in this trend.

Rather, they argue, it is aimed at ensuring that students for whom a tertiary course at university is not a realistic option, stay at school longer, suffer less pointless stress in their final years of secondary schooling and undertake courses better suited to their talents and interests.

This makes eminent sense. After all, most jobs in the workforce do not require a university degree. There’s plenty of evidence indicating that early school leavers and, by that, here it is meant those students who drop out from secondary school as soon as it is legally appropriate to do so, too often slip through the workforce gaps, remaining unemployed for far too long for anyone’s good.

Then there’s the not inconsiderable issue of aspiration and hope - while at school, students still have hope, more hope I daresay of completing some sort of qualification that will lead to a worthwhile career. The contemporary film, Moonlight, which incidentally was awarded the Oscar for Best Film, is a gut-wrenching reminder of the hopelessness into which students can disappear following the early curtailment of their secondary schooling. That’s not to say that students who complete their mandatory schooling years will by definition do well in life. That can’t even be said of all students who successfully complete a university degree. The twists and turns in our lives are far more complex than that. It’s also fair to say that school for some students is an exercise in trauma and disappointment.

Nonetheless, hanging in there at school would be a better option for more rather than less students. From this perspective, providing students with an incentive to stay at school longer is highly desirable.

Music The music program at Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College is a vibrant one offering a wide range of learning and performance opportunities to all students. There is an Information Night in November and several school tours for both students and parents.

Essendon Keilor College IN 2017 Essendon Keilor College will be undertaking an exciting $10 million redevelopment of the school.

The Niddrie Campus is being rebuilt as a state of the art Junior (Years 7 to 9) Campus. College Principal, David Adamson, Campus Principal, Heather Hawkins and her teaching team, have worked closely with award-winning Haskell Architects on the design of a 21st century learning environment. The buildings are designed to support a STEAM learning approach where students undertake problem-solving project work integrating science, technology, engineering and design, art and mathematics.

At the second Junior Campus, in East Keilor, existing Science rooms will be converted to a STEAM Centre so that both Campuses will be able to provide the highest quality programs.

STEAM, or STEM as it is also known, is a high priority for education. STEAM boosts creative problem solving plus innovative and critical thinking and develops the capacity of students to use new and emerging technologies.

Students from the College have already been working on STEAM projects with our university partners (University of Melbourne, Victoria University, Deakin University and La Trobe University) and the new facilities will provide even more opportunities for innovative teaching and learning.

Essendon Keilor College offers a broad curriculum that caters for the needs of all students. Our innovative Sport and Recreation Industry Project (SARIP), in partnership with Victoria University, provides entry into careers in the sport and recreation industry and our elite footballers continue to be drafted into the AFL, 28 at last count.

The College offers three languages, Japanese, Italian and Chinese and in 2018 will be introducing Vietnamese.

This will not only cater for our international students but will provide high quality language education for all of our students.

At our Senior (Years 10 to 12) Campus Year 11 students have been running programs for students from our local primary schools and lunch time STEAM clubs are in full swing.

In Year 9, students enter the Futures Centre program where, in addition to a focus on the traditional academic core subjects, students spend one day a week in project based units. These units are specifically geared towards building those skills considered essential for success in the 21st century world.

The college has received accreditation from the Department of Education to offer the Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Program, commencing in 2015. Students enter this program in Year 7, and it is tailored to the learning needs of those with high academic ability and potential. It offers extra challenge and greater depth in learning. Students will complete the first four years of secondary school in three years, and then have three years to complete VCE. In Year 10 students will have the option to study a combination of extension units and VCE units. In Year 12, students will also have the possibility of studying a university subject as part of their program.

At Years 10 to 12 there is a strong emphasis on academic rigour, and student programs are tailored to individual needs and strengths. They have a wide range of choices in the traditional areas of the Maths/Sciences, Humanities and the performing and visual arts, as well as niche areas of interest, such as multimedia, fashion, hospitality, horticulture, and avionics.

FCC also specialises in nurturing and challenging all students through the different phases of their secondary schooling from Year 7 to 12.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 One school which has boldly come out and stated its case for requiring students to ‘opt in’ if they want an ATAR, is Templestowe College in Melbourne’s north-east. As was reported in The Age newspaper recently, the school has embarked on a revolutionary approach, one which as its principal, Peter Hutton explains, “Finishing their schooling at Templestowe College without an ATAR would become the default option for students.”

If one of our aims is to encourage a love of learning, why would you make their final years of learning a hell?

In arguing this strategy, Hutton says, “If one of our aims is to encourage a love of learning, why would you make their final years of learning a hell?” He added, “We don’t want this to be a dirty little secret where kids are meant to feel ashamed. I want to bring it out into the light and present it as a really viable option.”

Templestowe College are to be commended for their transparency and frankness. Sadly, that’s not the case for all others. I can’t help but think of the eighties and the students made to sit their Year 12 exams as belonging to no school. I have no doubt that it was not an isolated case at the time, and from the stories told today, it would seem that the ‘market forces’ approach which has gained momentum in our education system has much for which to answer.

Central to the market approach to education is what is commonly termed the commodification of education. Put simply, this means that learning becomes a process where an economic value is attached to the outcomes. That is good marks for subjects studied, with the eventual pay dirt being a quality job. The better the marks the better the options for desirable courses at, of course, the more prestigious tertiary institutions; read our sandstone universities.

It’s important to remember that not all learning is assigned an economic value. Indeed, it is the very measurable, tangible learning that is undertaken in our schools that is assigned such value. Little wonder then that our NAPLAN tests, the international tests - Trends in International Mathematics & Science (TIMSS), Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and of course VCE with its attached ATAR scaled scores rule supreme.

No irony intended, but Einstein, himself an unremarkable school student, would make the connection between an increasingly commodified education system and the appeal to some fee-paying schools, private schools and sadly, some of our own government schools of pushing boundaries to outperform each other in their VCE results. This at the potential expense of their students it could be argued. There should be more to education than that and indeed there is.

One of the more frustrating features of our spiral down the path of high-stakes testing regimes in our schools is that we have no way of comparing school performance beyond the narrow confines of predominantly tests in literacy, numeracy as per NAPLAN and to that science can be thrown in for TIMSS and PISA tests. Then there’s VCE with ATAR scores, all designed primarily for entrance to university.

Sadly, the language of our day speaks of high performing and underperforming schools on the basis of these narrow indicators. This, quite apart from the fact that firstly, schools don’t operate on a level playing field of resourcing and

secondly, students are ‘enticed’ from government schools based simply on their academic or sporting prowess by some private schools. The free enterprise model of education explains this all very neatly. Schools with the best VCE results command the most clout for enrolments and, in the case of private schools, the highest fees. Student segregation based on social and academic advantage logically follows.

Little wonder then that the gap in educational performance between the students from our more affluent and poorer families is one of the highest of all OECD countries in international tests such as PISA. So many schools do wonderfully well, both on shoestring budgets and in the most challenging of circumstances in ways that matter so much - student and family wellbeing being a prime example. Unfairly, however, they are left behind in the public wake of others who also, it should be acknowledged, do well, but for whom these free market times in education are a boon.

A final point should be made for those amongst us obsessed with having us follow in the path of Asian countries and cities that outperform our students on TIMSS and PISA tests. Education systems cannot be divorced from the broader cultural context of their host nations. By definition, education systems are integrally woven within the tapestries of each nation’s culture. We should be mindful of that.

Simply cherry-picking one aspect of a country’s culture to import is fraught with the possibility of failure and disappointment. It should not go unnoticed that more than a few Asian nations value our existing education system with its flexibility and emphasis on creativity.

Maybe, just maybe, the move toward a broader basis for student engagement and success in senior secondary schools such as Templestowe College will be the dawn of a new era in our school system. If it proves to be so, then that will be truly revolutionary and will rewrite the rules of engagement for all schools. If not, then tilting at windmills is no bad thing. If it were, there would be no place for Don Quixote and the Impossible Dream.

Girls’ AFL Academy Positive change is coming in the way of women’s participation in elite sports. This year Greensborough College has developed a Girls’ AFL Academy in partnership with the Diamond Creek Women’s Football Club. It is a refreshing new initiative that is giving young girls a sense of self-worth whilst also encouraging them to get involved in physical activity.

The girls train four times a week (3 compulsory and 1 optional). Sessions revolve around Strength & Conditioning where we have a qualified and highly professional Elite Strength & Conditioning Coach present (Marnie Hay).

Marnie has written personal programs for each girl that includes their biomechanical assessment and injury history.

The individualised programs also include video footage that is used to analyse the elements that the girls need to improve on. Each individualised program is updated by Marnie every four weeks to ensure that the girls are doing everything properly as well as then upgrading each program to improve each individual’s athletic performance.

Squad training runs at Diamond Hills Reserve with the focus being game plans, tactics and skills training. The girls are expected to maintain 90% attendance in all of their classes and 80% attendance at training. We think it is very important to work closely with the school to ensure that their academics don’t drop as a result of being in the academy.

Our squad is home grown, meaning the facilitators of the program are all female staff members at Greensborough College and the two Assistant Coaches and our game day Sports Trainer are alumni.

Why choose a public secondary school?

WE ALL have a stake in building a public secondary school system that prepares the next generation of productive citizens and workers. Our nation’s economic and social prosperity depends on this. It is essential that all students, regardless of their family background, have access to an excellent local public school in order to reach their potential and contribute to our society.

The Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals has consulted widely with its members, asking them to identify what they consider to be the most crucial elements required to build and sustain a thriving public secondary school system. At this time of the year, families are making important decisions about choosing a secondary school for their child.

There’s a common view that if you send your child to a private school, your child will get better results.

But the facts show that this is wrong. A recent review of almost 30 academic studies revealed public schools achieve similar student outcomes to Catholic and independent schools across a range of education indicators. (Cobbold, 2015)

Public schools are great value for money compared with private schools, which charge families up to $30,000 each year in tuition fees per child. Tuition at public schools is free, with families paying for books and some essential items.

They equip students for success in life and in work.

Public schools are neighbourhood schools. Enrolling your child in a school within walking or riding distance to home makes it easier for you to know who your child’s friends are, to make friends with other local parents and to forge closer links with your school and your community.

High quality teaching is one of the biggest factors that influence student learning. That’s why public schools are intensifying their efforts to enhance the skills of their teachers through mentoring, peer and student feedback and other forms of professional development. Public schools are the backbone of our nation’s education system. They express our Australian egalitarian values. They provide opportunities for all children to succeed, no matter where they live. They give all children a fair chance to reach their potential and lead a fulfilling life.

The review showed there were no significant differences between the results of students from public, Catholic and independent schools in national and international tests and in university completion rates. And in the first year of university, students from public schools outperform other students - they achieve higher grades in their first year of university than students from Catholic and independent schools.

As a leader in the public school system I believe it’s important that families know about this information because it can help inform their decision-making. Public schools are just as good as private schools in the area that matters most - developing your child’s potential. The review is one of many pieces of educational research showing that students from the same social background do as well in public schools as they do in Catholic or independent schools.

Facilities The physical environment at JMSS is very different from

Outreach JMSS has a mission to provide opportunities in science for teachers and students across the state through our outreach programs.

Our annual Regional Science Exchange program invites Year 10 students from regional and remote locations around Victoria to our school in Melbourne for a 3-week block. This allows regional students to be immersed in cutting-edge scientific enquiry, and experience hands-on workshops at Monash University.

Our own students run science workshops for Primary students in our weekly “Little Scientist - Big Science” program which gives young students a chance to share their excitement for science and ask in-depth questions.

Community members are welcome to join students, teachers, parents and Monash academics for our annual Science Fair in October.

Year 9 and 10 students across the state can study one of JMSS’s emerging science electives online in live-time with our teachers via the ESV (Emerging Sciences Victoria) program - www.emsci.vic.edu.au. Study subjects such as nanoscience, biotechnology and astrophysics.

An expanding number of teacher professional learning workshops such as Mathematica are available including face-to-face and online formats.

The Music Program The music program is vibrant and well established and offers students a wide range of experiences learning to play a musical instrument and performing as a part of the Concert Band, music ensembles, jazz band and rock bands.

Brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments are offered, in addition to piano, vocal training and Chinese instruments.

The Sports Program The focus of the sports program is on participation at all levels and aims to provide positive outcomes for students, fostering school spirit, pride and connectedness to the school. Why a Girls’ School?

PARENTS often face conflicting advice when deciding whether to send their child to a single-sex or coeducational school.

There are more single-sex schools for girls than for boys in each of the three Australian educational sectors: government, Catholic and independent.

As a consequence, more boys than girls are enrolled in some coeducational schools.

So as a parent, how do you decide which school is best for your child? And, importantly, what do you actually want out of a school? For example, is the focus on achieving good grades, or about making sure your child fits in and feels accepted?

There is no straightforward answer, but research has revealed there are some key things to consider when choosing a school which might help determine where to send your child.

Single-sex schools Most of Australia’s single-sex schools are found in the feepaying non-government sector. This means that financially secure parents have a wider choice of schools open to them.

Of the small number of single-sex schools in the government sector, many are academically selective.

Research <http://www.aare.edu.au/datapublications/ 2007/for07148.pdf> suggests that girls who attend single-sex schools are more confident about themselves as learners in subjects such as mathematics and physics than in coeducational schools. In the absence of boys, the girls also feel less constrained in engaging in classroom discussions.

For boys attending single-sex or coeducational schools, their confidence levels in physics and mathematics are found to be equally high, and they boisterously engage in

Mount Alexander College “ONE size does not fit all, and neither should education. I believe student choice and voice is important in empowering students to learn,” says Mr Wayne Haworth, Principal of Mount Alexander College.

When Wayne arrived at MAC in April 2015, there were just over 300 students enrolled at the school. After conversations with the students, staff, parents and community that they were seeking more from the school, Wayne implemented changes to the curriculum and school structure.

Since then, enrolments have grown across all year levels from students seeking more from the education system, and with the growing expressions of interest Wayne expects them to continue to rise. Many students move to MAC because the traditional school system is not working and they want a more authentic student voice.

After a very busy year in 2016 of many new changes, 2017 is a year of consolidation while still moving forward to improve student outcomes. This is reflecting well in the classrooms, staffrooms and corridors.

What is different at MAC? Traditional schooling groups students according to age. At MAC, students are empowered through vertical classes, subject choice, creativity, critical thinking skills and independent learning. The vertical curriculum enables subject choice for every student, developing a deeper love of learning in students. Students are placed in Entry Level (Year 7), Above Entry (Years 8 to 10) and Graduate (Years 11 and 12), and have individual learning plans. Through extensive course counselling, students select from over 100 subjects in key learning areas – English, Maths, Health and PE, Humanities, Languages, Arts, Technology and Science.

learning and the classroom climate is calmer.

The buildings and grounds have had extensive improvements made in the last 12 months; however, it is the quality of the teachers makes the school great. Rosehill Secondary College AT ROSEHILL Secondary College, the newly refurbished Science Department has been equipped with state-of-the-art interior design and technology. This allows a unique experience in STEM education. STEM is an interdisciplinary approach to learning that removes the traditional barriers separating the four disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. When these fields are brought together, more meaningful learning can take place.

STEM integrates these subjects into real world learning experiences. In 2016, our Environmental Science students collected and analysed data from our local creek system, Steele Creek. The data was used by the EPA to assess the health of the creek, after an environmental spill contaminated the water. Our data was used as a reference point by the EPA. Students have also participated in the following STEM experiences: ■ Engineers without Borders Conferences – Students design solutions to current global humanitarian problems.

■ Robogals - An international non-profit that inspires and encourages female students to consider Engineering.

■ In2Science - Science and Maths peer mentoring in the classroom by current University Science Students.

■ Robotics Program (New in 2017) - High tech coding and programming digital technologies with the use of robotic spheres.

■ Use of multiple 3D printers – incorporating fusion 360 CAD software to design and develop real products.

Our students are also provided with opportunities to extend their knowledge and inspire their curiosity of Science by attending various Science programs outside of the school. These programs include: ■ Endeavor Engineering – Students have the opportunity to meet with high performing Melbourne University Students, presenting their final year projects.

The Federal Government’s 2015 report on the future of the workforce has found that nearly half of Australian jobs are at risk of computerisation and automation. The non-profit group Foundation for Young Australians recently found that 60 per cent of Australian students were training for jobs that would not exist in the future. Students leaving school in the next few years are likely to have up to 17 different jobs in five different industries. Many of these jobs don’t currently exist and will use technology that has not been invented yet.

After studying the behaviour of thousands of children, Dr Dweck coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement.

Select Entry Accelerated Learning What is SEAL? VICTORIAN Government secondary schools have been operating specific programs at authorised schools for gifted students since 1980. These have been known as Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) schools. The Academy of Accredited SEAL Schools (TAASS) has been established to maintain this tradition to enable groups of like minded students to develop academically, socially and emotionally.

The SEAL Academy follows Gagné’s model for the definition of gifted and talented students.

Entrance exams To gain entry into the SEAL program of a SEAL Academy school, students must achieve high performance results in an entrance exam. Students who wish to undertake the SEAL program in a particular school year, must sit for the entrance test the year before. The entrance exam takes place at each school at varying dates - please refer to the SEAL Academy school websites for particular entrance exam dates. SEAL schools! SEAL stands for Select Entry Accelerated Learning. Understanding just what that means is one key to choosing the right secondary school for your child.

Other words discussed when you hear the term SEAL include gifted, enrichment, enhancement, extension and talent. Finding your way around the maze of just what each school offers from these options and just what that means can sometimes be confusing, even daunting.

It is important to understand that schools which offer a Select Entry Accelerated Learning program have earned the right to use this term. It’s usually shortened to SEAL in their information, and a school can only become a SEAL school by following specific guidelines and procedures that the

Government has set. The number of SEAL schools is limited, because these schools cater for a limited proportion of the population. This is where an understanding of the term gifted is needed.

Giftedness is usually considered to be ability that cannot be attained by everybody, in a field such as academic, music, sport, art. Academic giftedness can be thought of as having intellectual potential that would place someone in about the top 10% of the population. If we accept the idea of academic or intellectual giftedness in the same way we accept giftedness in sport, then offering something equivalent to the Victorian Institute of Sport or the Australian Institute of Sport for academic ability makes sense. This is where SEAL schools shine.

Why are there only a limited number of SEAL schools, you may ask. At any one year level across Victoria, there are close to 45,000 students. When we use the broad idea of academic giftedness as about 10% of the population, then we can see that we are trying to meet the educational needs of about 4,500 academically gifted students in each level.

Placing some of these students in every school makes it difficult for teachers to meet their needs, because gifted students have characteristics that can make it very hard for them to work in a mixed-ability classroom and still reach their academic potential.

Some of these characteristics include grasping facts, ideas and concepts more quickly than others, needing fewer exercises or learning activities to understand what is being taught, seeing ideas holistically or as a big picture not as small steps, and needing others who think like them to bounce ideas off and interact with.

Sunbury Downs College MY NAME is Maria Oddo and as the Principal I am proud to have members of our community meet with me and join me on a tour to experience all that we have to offer. My work at the school started as the Assistant Principal Later Years in 2012 where I led and worked on VCE results and establishing a strong data focus for teachers to drive improvements in the classroom. We offer a rich program in an environment with strong student management, high expectations and educational outcomes. The College regards itself as an academic school with a wide range of programs. There is a strong emphasis on core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities; complemented by programs in the Arts/ Technology, Performing Arts, Physical Education/Health and Languages (Italian). Yarra Hills Secondary College YARRA HILLS Secondary College is a multi-campus government secondary school in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria Australia. We have two campuses, a year 7 – 10 Campus at Mt Evelyn and a Mooroolbark Campus with both year 7 – 10 and senior (year 11/12) precincts on the one site. Current enrolments are around 800 students and have been rising over the last four years.

The Mt Evelyn Campus typically accepts students from the local Mt Evelyn area, nearby Lilydale, Silvan and towns further down the Warburton Highway in the Yarra Valley, including such areas as Wandin, Seville, Woori Yallock and beyond. Students attending this campus progress to the Mooroolbark Campus for their senior studies. Bus transport is made available to do this.

VET (Vocational Education & Training) and VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) School Based Apprenticeship Training is also available, with Yarra Hills being the Lead School for the atEast VCAL consortium. This consortium currently provides workplace learning for over 200 students from 10 schools across the Eastern Region of Melbourne. Yarra Hills’ students in this program regularly receive industry awards for excellence.

The Mooroolbark Campus directly serves the Mooroolbark, Lilydale, Kilsyth, Montrose, Croydon and Bayswater areas. Direct local transport exists linking each of these areas to the campus through either the Cambridge Rd/ Hawthory Rd bus stops at the rear of the school or Hull Rd and Mooroolbark Station near the main entrance.

Yarra Hills has an extensive online curriculum available through the use of ‘Moodle’, which is accessible to staff, students and parents. This provides students with 24/7 access to classwork, revision and assessment materials. As well as providing a differentiated curriculum to challenge students at all academic levels, Yarra Hills has also created an online extension program that allows students who are identified as ‘well above’ standard levels to undertake further instruction in a series of rich, open-ended learning tasks.

With the recent opening of the Yarra Ranges ‘Tech School’ Discovery Centre at Lilydale Lakeside, Yarra Hills has been one of a select group of schools to help develop and access specialist programs in STEAM (Science, Technology,

Yarra Hills is renowned for providing a wide selection of pathways for all students, successfully offering a large complement of VCE studies, with students in the most recent graduating group receiving placements in a large range of post-secondary institutions, including the coveted Medicine and Law.

Yarra Hills has an extensive Performing Arts program, including several highly successful Concert Bands led by the Director of the Australian Youth Band, Mr Richard O’Toole.

These groups perform regularly across the state and in alternate years undertake an international tour. This year’s group will be travelling to New Zealand. Additionally, we have singing troupes and an excellent annual College Production which involves a large number of students.

The Outdoor Education Program is also renowned throughout the wider community, providing students the opportunity to experience learning beyond the classroom.

The College has its own buses, canoes/kayaks, diving/ snorkelling gear and a full set of camping/hiking equipment.
