Autumn in the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges is a spectacular time of year to be garden-hopping.

The heat’s off, there’s a sprinkle of rain to bring some green back into the countryside, and the leaves are changing day by day to create the magnificent spectacle of autumn colour.

It’s time to escape the air-conditioned four walls and go exploring other people’s gardens.

One of those other people is legendary Dandenong Ranges gardener, Shirley Carn.

At the glorious age of 81, Shirley is a veteran of the open garden phenomena that gardeners and non-gardeners alike have embraced as a favourite pastime.

This year Shirley’s Australian plant garden in Monbulk will be open as part of Open Gardens Victoria to raise funds for Oxfam.

Only three years old, it is the fifth garden created by the knowledgeable and talented gardener and, she says, it is the last time she will throw open her garden gates.

Shirley opened her first garden in Silvan just a short while after her son had died of HIV Aids.

“I opened the garden for Aids when it wasn’t fashionable or safe,” she says with a tone that flags the stigma, fear and misinformation that was thick in

Over the years, her love of gardening and humanity, has seen her share her magnificent gardens to support important causes, starting with the Burnett Institute which was at the forefront of early research into HIV Aids.

“I’ve opened the gardens for Peter

Mac ... I’ve lost four people with cancer, and for Doctors Without Borders,” she says.

“I’ve checked them all out, and I believe you’re meant to support these good people.”

There is joy also in being generous with her wealth of knowledge and with the bountiful beauty that comes with getting her hands in the dirt and creating interesting gardens.

The people who visit range from young people hungry for inspiration and knowledge, to overseas visitors who are fascinated with Australian native plants, and others who just love to meander, admire and chat with a fellow garden-lover.

“Gardeners are lovers ... ,” Shirley says reflecting on the nature of those interactions.

“When you’re older, you may as well have a passion, and it may as well be gardening,” she says.

It’s a casual statement that doesn’t fully reflect the years of dedication, learning and creativity that has gone into the gardens that have brought pleasure to thousands, and desperately needed funds to life-saving research and humanitarian projects.

If the weekend of 22 and 23 April is Shirley Carn’s last open garden, it will be a chance to see the master gardener in her natural environment, and perhaps say thanks for all she has done over the years.

A true pumpkin fit for a coach

By Derek Schlennstedt The proof is in the pumpkin ... or is it the pudding ... either way, there is definitely something in this pumpkin pertaining to its enormous size.

Weighing close to 200kgs, this pumpkin, grown by Mount Evelyn’s Matthias Scoriot hopes to reign supreme at the Alowyn Gardens Giant Pumpkin Competition on Sunday 2 April.

One of several pumpkin seeds Matthias planted in December that he has been caring and nurturing for was the smallest and worst seedling that has grown to be the biggest pumpkin.

Matthias says that he placed the smallest seedling in a bad position in the garden and the so-called ‘runt’ of the pumpkins has since outgrown the others and become a true pumpking.

“When I was putting my seeds down, I had my favourites, the worst seedling, well I didn’t put that one in the best position,” he said.

“It’s always a surprise with pumpkins; there might have been a good luck factor.”

Pumpkin growing is best done in warm temperate weather and anything over 40 degrees is deemed too hot and can damage the pumpkin- luckily this summer has been quite favourable for pumpkin growers.

Having brooded over his pumpkins for the last few months, Matthias says that there’s no magical secret or routine to making them grow, and you certainly don’t have to sing to them - all that’s needed, is hard work.

‘It’s a bit of work keeping on top of

it and caring for them.

“You have to make sure the vine does not break or get damaged, you have to check for fungus, take good care of the soil and use a bit of compost, and it’s important to keep burying the vine so it can create more roots,” he says.

With a passion for gardening, Matthias says he has always wanted to grow pumpkins to enormous sizes and says he does it more for the fun of it.

“Since I was a kid, I have been gardening, and I always wanted to give it a try, it’s a lot of fun,” he says.

All the biggest pumpkins from the Yarra Valley will be on display to take part in the Giant Pumpkin Competition held at Alowyn Gardens every year.

Once again, there are five classes - Giant Atlantic Pumpkin, Biggest Queensland Blue, Biggest Butternut, Biggest Zucchini and the Most Unusual Pumpkin.

Each class will be divided into two sections - Under 12 and Open, giving everyone a chance to show off their extraordinary pumpkinalia!

The Allowyn Gardens Pumpkin Competition is on Sunday, 2 April from 10am to 5pm and it goes without saying that pumpkin will be the flavour of the day with pumpkin soup and pumpkin scones aplenty, as well as Asian street food on offer.

Unfortunately, the largest pumpkins

won’t be for eating as these pumpkins are only used for their size and Matthias says they aren’t too tasty.

“They are edible but ... . they don’t taste so nice.”

Chestnut powerballs

By Kath Gannaway Pears and chestnuts are just two delicious examples of the fabulous seasonal fare that is abundant throughout autumn in the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges.

Making the most of local fresh produce is not only a healthy option, it’s a great way to support the local growers.

Keep an eye out for drive-in orchard sales or pop into a local market for fresh from the tree fruit, and for some extreme chestnut action, don’t forget the Kalorama Chestnut Festival on 7 May at Kalorama Reserve.

Roasted chestnuts are synonymous with autumn in Australia and the festival is a great place to discover just how ver-

satile they are.

Here is a recipe to inspire!

Chestnut, Pear and Orange Powerballs* are great for a picnic or school lunches and Maggie Beer’s delicious Chocolate and Fresh Pear Pudding** is the ultimate autumn comfort food.

Chestnut, Pear and Orange Powerballs Ingredients: 500g fresh chestnuts 1 tbs honey 2 tbs vegetable oil Juice of 1 orange 100g dried pear, roughly chopped 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp sea salt 1 tbs white sesame seeds Additional black and white sesame seeds to coat

Method: 1. Place chestnuts in a medium saucepan with about 1 litre of water, so the chestnuts are fully submerged. Bring to the boil, and boil for one hour, topping up water if required. Drain and cool in cold water. When cool enough to handle, open and scoop each nut out.

2. Place chestnuts in a mortar and pestle or food processor, and grind until smooth.

3. Add the honey, vegetable oil, orange juice, pear, cinnamon and 1tbs of the white sesame seeds. Process or ground until well combined.

4. Roll tablespoons of the mixture into balls, and coat the additional black and white sesame seeds.

Makes 36 balls.

Before the accident, Colin was set to carve out a career in the Royal Australian Air Force, but those plans were over, and he struggled to cope with the repercussions.

“I put on 117kg after hospital, became very depressed,” he said.

“I was depressed afterwards for years, in low-spirits, not active ... when I was 30 years old, I decided to turn around my life ... I thought, ‘why can’t I change’.”

Colin attributes much of his life-changing pursuits to Berwick-based personal trainers, and brothers, Lachlan and Marcus Burke.

He booked himself into an intense regime of commando camps, boxing, kickboxing and weights - up to three sessions per day - at the Personal Performance Training Centre.

With their help, he has completed a half marathon, as well as a Tough Mudder event during which he was pushed to his physical limit.

Now, almost 15 years to the day of his accident, he will compete in the Everest Marathon in May. During the undulating 42km run, which will include around another 150 runners, they will finish at Namche Bazaar.

The rocky route features many climbs, including a 523m rise.

Colin said he expected this to be one of the greatest challenges he had faced, but also one of the most rewarding.

“We’ll leave for Melbourne on 14 May to Kathmandu; we’re only there for a couple of days where we’ll acclimatise,” he said.

“I expect the marathon will be gruelling, but the scenery will get me through.”

Belgrave adventurer Colin Donald has notched another milestone before his bold ‘Neverest Challenge’ in May, through which he will raise funds for the Australian Himalayan Foundation.

Despite almost having his leg amputated after a near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2002, Colin has fought back many obstacles on his way to his most challenging goal yet, the Everest Challenge, where he will complete a marathon along the unforgiving Mount Everest terrain.

On Saturday 25 March, he headed to the Dandenong Ranges and completed a 103km trek on foot, a test of endurance also known as ‘Everesting’.

Though, it’s a far cry from what could’ve been for Colin, who had his life turned upside down after the 2002 accident, during which he severed an artery and shattered his leg and pelvis.

“I suffered a near fatal motorbike accident; it got to the point where they called off the air ambulance because they thought I wasn’t going to make it ... but I did,” he said.

“I spent eight months in hospital, then three to four months doing daily rehabilitation.”

Colin was told by onlookers on Eastern Freeway that his bike was clipped by a car, causing him and his bike to strike the rear of another vehicle and launch metres in the air.

As he lay in the Royal Melbourne Hospital, heavily dosed on painkillers, doctors advised Colin’s mother that his left leg had to be amputated.

Otherwise, he will not walk again, the experts told her.

In brief A space for men Men’s Shed groups in the Yarra Ranges are among those in Victoria who can benefit from $879,000 in State Government funds.

Monbulk MP James Merlino said the grants aimed to help communities provide a space for men to meet, reconnect and participate in their local communities.

They also give men the opportunity to help their local communities; from creating nesting boxes for endangered species, to completing maintenance work for pensioners.

Grants of up to $60,000 are available for communities to build a new shed, or up to $30,000 to refurbish an existing one.

Community groups and local councils are encouraged to apply.

Mr Merlino said the funding would be put to good use.

“Men’s sheds are a huge asset for local communities; they give men the opportunity to interact in a safe space and give back to their communities,” he said.

“This new funding will help to provide more spaces like this around the state.”

Unsafe driveway

By Jodie Symonds A Belgrave mother believes her “unsafe” driveway is an accident waiting to happen for her disabled daughter.

Though, despite her calls to Yarra Ranges Council for assistance, they have said it is not their responsibility.

Mother-of-three, Kim Royle, and her daughter Bethany Boddy, 17, endure their daily journey down their uneven driveway, and Ms Royle said she had waited five years for it to be graded.

Bethany has Rett syndrome, a neurological disorder found almost exclusively in females, and may suddenly lose previously acquired abilities, including conscious control of her hands and the ability to vocalise most sounds or words.

Ms Royle has a knee complaint, which makes transporting Bethany down the driveway in her wheelchair even more difficult.

“I spoke to two people from council and I got told, ‘it’s your problem’,” Ms Royle said.

“I thought, ‘hang on, I pay rates and everything else’.

“The council vehicles use my driveway to turn around, but for some reason they can’t bring the grader up a couple of metres.”

Yarra Ranges Council director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said grading work did not impact private property including driveways and crossovers as part of the Under the Road Management Act.

The uneven driveway Ms Royle said she wanted graded. 166517 He said grading works were scheduled for May on Ms Royle’s street, but will instead focus on continuing to improve the road surface for residents.

“Under the Road Management Act, Victorian landowners are responsible for constructing and maintaining driveways, crossovers and drainage underneath crossovers on their private property,” Mr Varmalis said.

“We have thousands of driveways across the municipality, and maintaining these would impose a significant cost on council and ratepayers.

“Council is responsible for cleaning table drains, but we acknowledge that landowners may have difficulty with clearing pipes under crossovers.”

Ms Royle said the driveway was ex-

tremely difficult to navigate.

Also, she requires the assistance of Bethany’s bus driver, Dianne Vaux, or other family members, to get Bethany up to the house after school.

“Obviously, we have a steep driveway, that isn’t the issue, the issue is where the gravel has worn away and I struggle to get the wheelchair over it,” Ms Royle said.

“Usually, I’m not one to complain, but I don’t ever ask for anything.

“All I want is for Beth to be safe when we get her down to the road to meet the bus - and afterschool when she needs to get back to the house.”

Bethany’s bus driver, Ms Vaux, said she would like to see council grade the area sooner than May.

By Peter Douglas Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service was recently the beneficiary of a substantial financial donation from the Belgrave Community Pharmacy.

As part of the ‘Chemist’s own help us help our local community campaign’, the Chemist’s Own brand donated $500 to DRERS, with the pharmacy adding a further $200 to the cause.

The funds will go towards supporting the great work of DRERS, which assist people in the community who are in need of food, medicine and financial support.

DRERS manager Tania Bevan said help from local businesses was essential to their operation.

“These funds will assist us to continue to help people in our community,” she said.

“We have four freezers and two fridges to run, and last year we gave away 3432 bags of groceries to help people who need help with food.

“Without such support, we could not provide this much assistance, leaving some people in our community go-

ing without the basics.

“Thank you to the Belgrave Community Pharmacy and to all others who provide support to us.”

Arthur Kyriakos, from the Belgrave Community Pharamcy, said they were only too happy to lend a hand.

“We were excited to learn that our nominated group, DRERS, was selected as the worthy winner,” he said.

“Being a local community pharmacy, we greatly value and support our local schools and community groups.

“We have numerous fund-raising boxes in the pharmacy.

“All customers are encouraged to pop a copy of their receipt into a box of their choice.

“We then periodically collate all these collected receipts and donated 2 per cent of customers’ purchases to these groups.”

Mr Kyriakos said they started their Community Support Program just over one year ago.

“We get a lot of satisfaction and joy in presenting funds to our local school and community groups to spend on whatever they need,” he said.

Briefly Court date after collision A 21-year-old Dingley Village man will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court after a collision on the Gembrook-Launching Place Road, Launching Place, about 2am on 26 March.

The man’s vehicle allegedly left the road, colliding with hedges next to the roadway; fortunately no-one was injured in the collision.

Inquiries revealed the male was a suspended driver and a breath test showed he had a breath alcohol content of 0.078 per cent.

Three Croydon North males were arrested last week in relation to the kidnapping of a Montrose man that occurred on Sunday 19 March.

Last Thursday 23 March, police arrested two males in relation to the kidnapping and the third was arrested shortly after on Friday 24 March.

The male victim was kidnapped and assaulted but was found safe and is now free.

Two of the offenders are on remand awaiting trial, with the third on bail awaiting trial at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

The tin shed SES One of the busiest SES units in Victoria operates out of a tin shed in Emerald.

If a tree falls through a roof on a stormy night, if someone needs to be rescued from a car accident - or if someone is missing in the bush - it is these volunteers who get out of bed in the middle of the night and provide a highly professional service to people in their time of need.

Emerald SES received more than 1300 calls for help last year, operating out of a 30-year-old tin shed with one toilet.

There are no shower facilities, and storage is so cramped that volunteers must keep their overalls and boots in their personal car at all times.

Using her head My name is Cilla Joyce Hirst; I am 10 years old and I go to St Patrick’s Primary School in Lilydale.

I wanted to do something as I know a lot of people who have been impacted by cancer, including my friend’s grandad and another family friend.

I decided to shave my head and raise as much money as I can.

I wrote letters to all the businesses and my mum took me around to shops to get donations.

My first goal was $1000 but I almost reached that in the first week so I increased it to $1500.

The two nights before my shave I had $1800, so I went and doorknocked with my older sister Evie and we got up to $2000.

Finally, I was able to raise over $2500 and I felt this is a great result.

Home is out of reach

By Peter Douglas Lack of affordable housing within the Yarra Ranges looks set to further spiral out of control if action isn’t taken immediately, according to Yarra Ranges Council.

With as much as 38 per cent shortfall presently existing in low-cost housing supply, some estimates say within 20 years as many as 50 per cent of people seeking low-cost options will be left out in the cold.

This would represent a major housing crisis for the region.

Yarra Ranges Council, through its affiliation with the Eastern Affordable Housing Alliance (EAHA), said social housing supply was significantly below the metropolitan average, as well as being well below its capacity of meeting future needs. In 2014, the shortfall of social housing in the Yarra Ranges was 920 dwellings.

Without intervention, EAHA estimates by 2036 this shortfall will reach 1260, which equates to 57 dwellings needed annually for the next 19 years.

To help put this into context, Yarra Ranges experienced a 19 per cent (349) increase in the number of very low-income households between 2006 and 2011.

Yarra Ranges Council Mayor, Noel Cliff, said council had a role to play in forming partnerships with housing providers, and to continue to advocate to state and federal governments to come up with solutions.

“There needs to be more intervention to increase the

“This is why council is currently looking at the option to sell a block of surplus land in Lilydale to an affordable housing provider to build

new social housing.

“We have seen homelessness increasing throughout the state as the cost of renting increases and the population grows.

“Council applauds the recent announcements by the State Government, but has concerns

about uncertain federal funding for vital housing services for homeless people.

“All three levels of government need to contribute to solving this urgent problem.”

Cr Cliff said mixed tenancy, and affordable and well-man-

aged housing, was a potential solution In 2016, local agency ANCHOR supported 1682 people in the Yarra Ranges through their Opening Doors Program and in transitional support and other programs they offer to people at risk of becoming homeless, and that each case was different.

“The majority of adults presenting as homeless have children in their care who are missing school, not attending sporting clubs and often without close friends or families around them,” Ms Tucker said.

“For everyone that is homeless, their lives are put on hold; without a home to live in, life as we expect it to be is impossible.”

Meanwhile, the EAHA has expressed concerns the Federal Government may axe funding for the National Affordable Housing Agreement (NAHA) in the upcoming Budget.

Echoing the alarm expressed by other housing groups, EAHA is calling on the Federal Government to maintain its commitment to the NAHA. EAHA Chairperson Sharon Ellis said a re-think may be required.

“Federal Government funding is vital for public housing and homelessness services,” she said.

“If media suggestions are correct and the Federal Government intends to axe NAHA funding, countless vulnerable Australians will be at increased risk of homelessness.”

Medical Centre in good health The renovations at the Emerald Medical Centre are finally finished!

To celebrate, Emerald Medical Centre will host a grand community opening on 8 April from 12.30pm.

This will include a free sausage sizzle, face-painting and performances by Gemco, the Emerald Primary School choir and the Ukulele Club.

The local emergency services will bring CFA and SES trucks to add to the spectacle.

Dr George Somers, director of the centre, said it would be a great event.

“We would love the opportunity to show the community our new building, as we welcome in our vision to provide a teambased healthcare system to Emerald and the surrounding communities,” he said.

The building will be opened by the Victorian Emergency Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley, and the local Federal Member of Parliament, Jason Wood.

“This reflects our dual role as the medical hub for the local emergency services and as a major provider of medical services to the

district,” Dr Somers said “The building is airconditioned and is fully supported by solar power to enable us to continue through a major emergency.

“Emerald Medical Centre has delivered first-class medical care to the community for 60 years.

“The practice will now be well-equipped to bring to life the newest developments in comprehensive, co-ordinated primary health care, called the patient centred medical home.”

They will deliver more allied health care professionals, specialists and services to Emerald, so more of your health needs will be taken care of locally.

These include physiotherapy, podiatry, psychologists, counsellors, a diabetes nurse educator, dietician, audiologist, speech pathologist, exercise physiologist and pathology and are attracting a large variety of medical specialists.

Strong voice hits right note The new talent at the Cuckoo Restaurant, Chelsea Dow, has come a long way since her days as a shy child.

Chelsea, having worked in wash-up at the Cuckoo for the past nine years, has spread her wings and is now the new talent singing in the Bavarian Floor Show that the Cuckoo Restaurant has been famous for now for almost 60 years.

With lessons and a deep love for jazz singing, Chelsea still finds it hard to believe that she has found her voice and the confidence to sing in public.

As a child, Chelsea recounts the shyness of her character.

“I didn’t speak much for years, I was very quiet,” she said.

But now Chelsea looks forward to a new initiative at the Cuckoo for locals.

From late April, the Cuckoo will be opening Thursday evenings for dinner, just for locals.

The experience will be completely different to the well-known buffet, instead offering a set menu and an ever-changing jazz arrangement.

“This is where Chelsea will really come to life,” said Rosemary Marchington, marketing manager.

“Chelsea is the most delightful person to work with and it is a pleasure to watch her grow, gain confidence and clearly love what she is doing.

“Shelley in administration hears Chelsea sing from the office - our diva can’t help herself.

“She sings at the top of her voice while in wash-up and it’s wonderful to hear.

“She has an amazing voice and we just love her.”

To hear Chelsea sing, she can be caught at the Cuckoo for the traditional floor show (days) or start booking for Thursday night locals’ night, starting Thursday 20 April.

A Cure For Wellness (MA15+) Starring: Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs, Mia Goth

By Peter Douglas Emerald artist Martha Silver Breninger has opened up her creative world to the hills community, with her first solo exhibition presently featured at Arvys Gallery in Olinda.

Growing up in an artistic family, Breninger knows well the healing powers of art, and hopes to educate and inspire others to explore this wonder for themselves.

The exhibition, which runs from wall to wall at the gallery, features many different mediums, including painting, chalk art, photography, felt work and even poetry.

Breninger says there is a strong narrative that runs through the artworks, with the exhibition called ‘Re-Birth - Journey of a Healing Spirit’.

“The exhibition is a story of a woman who has come through adversity, including addiction and domestic violence,” she said. “‘Re-birth’ is a moving story ... to finding a new joyous life, told through paintings, poetry, pastels and photography.

“It mostly focuses on the hope and recovery from addiction; it’s very inspiring and powerful.

“Art has such a healing power and I want to express that to help others.”

A Cure For Wellness is an absurd yet excellent psychological horror film.

Sent to retrieve his boss for a merger, New York financial executive Lockhart (Dane DeHaan) travels to a mysterious wellness spa in the Swiss Alps, but discovers a sinister secret under its nurturing surface.

Compared to the family-friendly bulk of his work, which includes the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, A Cure For Wellness feels like a macabre pet project for director Gore Verbinski.

This film is driven by sumptuous visuals, engrossing performances and a nightmarish, slowburning atmosphere.

Lockhart begins the film as an aloof loner, but his fatigued, overworked persona renders him strangely sympathetic, and the monstrous treatment he endures overrides our initial dislike of him.

Jason Isaacs is phenomenal as Dr Voller, a genial and welcoming yet strangely evasive man capable of shocking cruelty.

A Cure For Wellness has shades of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, with a troubled protagonist in a snowy fortress-like location whose morbid experiences test his sanity.

The climax is somewhat ridiculous, delivering one bizarre twist after another, but it still feels tense and deserved, given the film’s steady build of madness.

I’m rather disappointed to see A Cure For Wellness performing so poorly at the box-office, as it’s an incredibly eerie, grotesque and compelling film.

Sycamore trees get the axe

Councillor Mike Clarke and Jane Holland project officer of the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs are trying to prevent sycamore maple trees from spreading. 166537 ers near Sassafras Creek, Perrins Creek and the Ferny Creek area, helping landowners with strategies to reduce environmental weeds - in particular woody weeds including English ivy, tree ferns and sycamore maple.

Sycamore trees are classified as weeds and, as such, residents do not require a permit or arborist inspection to remove a weed species from their land.

Council manager of Parks, Environment and Infrastructure Services, David Harper, said the works would not just reduce threats to the Dandenongs in the event of bushfire, but would enhance biodiversity.

“The Dandenong Ranges are known for their beautiful natural spaces to enjoy, whether it’s along the roads or on trails through the national park,” he said.

“Removing these sycamores will make the area safer in the event of fire, and will help our

The removal of roadside sycamore maples will take place along the Monbulk Road, between Perrins Creek Road and Lyrebird Falls, and may result in detours due to closure of the road, during works.

One way is to plant native wildflower patches in your backyard and ideally link your patch to your neighbours.

Animals love to travel along corridors and insects are more likely to see a food source if the patch is large.

Convince your neighbour that native bees will then pollinate their tomatoes and hoverflies will attack the aphids on their brassicas!

As well as pollination, hoverflies, in their larvae state, have an insatiable appetite for aphids and therefore are deemed a beneficial insect to have around farms and backyards.

Yarra Ranges Council is partnering with VicRoads and local community groups to remove sycamore trees from Kallista and surrounding areas.

Council will contribute $90,000 to removing the sycamore trees from Monbulk Road after receiving funding through the National Bushfire Mitigation Program.

Woody weeds and sycamore maple contribute heavily to the amount of foliage and bush in the area, and removal of these will help to reduce bushfire risk for next year.

Lyster Ward councillor, Mike Clarke, says the removal of these weed species is particularly vital as it not only reduces introduced species of weed but also mitigates bushfire risk in the Dandenongs.

“It’s fantastic on two fronts ... .first, it’s weed reduction and it’s getting rid of significant woody weeds that are multiplying and spreading throughout the Dandenong Ranges rapidly - especially ones such as sycamore maple," he said.

“It’s also part of fuel reduction, which is extremely important."

Works to remove the large sycamore trees are planned to be delivered in April - May 2017 and traffic management will be in place.

Council has been working closely with community groups in the area and works are being supported by the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs, Monbulk Landcare and Friends of Sassafras Creek.

Pavilion is standing tall The community and sporting clubs of Emerald welcomed the opening of a new $729,000 sports pavilion on Saturday 18 March.

The new pavilion includes a large function area, kitchen and amenities.

Much of the funding has come through the Liberal Government’s $500,000 commitment to the facilities, through which it is hoped to increase participation in netball, cricket and tennis.

Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash, said the new pavilion offered the community not only sporting facilities but also a function centre and meeting room.

“I’m a massive sports fan, and I’m proud to invest in modern facilities that bring communities together to play sport and host social functions,” Minister Nash said.

“I aim to build the kind of communities that our children and grandchildren want to either stay in or come back to, and sporting facilities like this do just that.”

Federal Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood, said the new pavilion certainly looked the part, overlooking the Chandler Reserve and decked out with all the modern conveniences in the kitchen and bathrooms.

“I have worked closely with many of the local sporting clubs of many years, and this is a great victory to see the new pavilion building standing tall over the Chandler Reserve,” Mr Wood said.

“More than 25 sporting teams access Emerald’s Chandler Reserve; I am sure that these facilities will be well used.”

By Peter Douglas Seeing Hollywood superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger and his entourage was enough inspiration to propel a group of local youngsters to a bronze in the Arnold Classic Under 12 Futsal Tournament.

Held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, amid the Arnold Classic activities, a team from the Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club were invited to be a part of the Under 12 Round Robin.

The team played several short games, where they competed against Victoria’s best, and narrowly missed out on the grand final, enduring a 2-1 loss to the eventual finalist.

Coach Gary Bowering said it was a fantastic effort.

“The boys were able to expand on their experiences from the recent Nationals tournament, where they made the quarter finals, competing against full-time academics around the country, and were successful against Brisbane and Perth teams, which had flown in for the five-day event,” he said.

“They had a lot of fun.”

The players are now looking forward to the coming season, where they have just started training in the VCFA outdoor soccer competition, and will play in the under-11s Dragons team.

Wildcats stopped in grand final tracks The Olinda Under 16s cricket team has emerged victorious in its grand final after a great battle with Eildon Park.

On day one, Eildon Park won the toss and chose to bowl on a wet, dewy surface.

Olinda’s Ethan Kennedy and Ted Box opened the batting, and helped their team to a great start.

Kennedy was his usual aggressive self, while Box worked the ball into the gaps nicely.

Kennedy lost his wicket for 42 in a stand worth 68.

Josh Langer then joined the action and helped to guide his team to 1/86 off 25 overs.

Box finished on 27no, batting right through.

In reply, Eildon Park came out with a positive attitude, running well between the wickets and playing with intent.

After 10 overs, they were 1/25, with their noses slightly in front.

As with the semi-final (on day two), the team then lost its way for the next 10 overs, as the Wildcats poured on the runs, going at nearly five runs per over.

A late wicket to Aiden Ardley was crucial as it put a halt to the runs, with Eildon Park eventually finishing at 2/80.

On day two, again under beautiful blue skies at Olinda Reserve, the fight for the flag looked a tight battle.

Early on, Olinda’s fielding looked much sharper.

The Wildcats had moved quickly to 2/100 when the skipper, Ardley, stepped up again to remove the opposition’s best batsman.

The next half an hour was all Olinda, in particular for Ardley and Marc Feltham.

Backed by some great fielding, both bowled brilliantly to rip the Eildon Park batting to pieces.

The batting side lost 8/20 in the space of 14 overs.

Ardley’s eight overs delivered 4/6, while Feltham was in his sixth over when he finished off the innings to post 3/5.

This added to his brilliant run out from square leg.

Gabe Filleul was the other wickettaker.

This gave the team a run-chase of 35, with nine wickets still intact.

Despite some early wickets, Jonty Scott (12no) and Jake Riordan (17no) wiped off the runs with minimal fuss.

Thanks went to all players, officials and parents for their efforts throughout the season.

A grand showdown Take a trip back in time at Historic Winton.

History hits the road In conjunction with Historic Winton, the Mail newspaper is giving readers the chance to win one of an incredible 15 double-passes to the renowned event.

LILYDALE BOWLS Saturday 25 March was to be the final showdown of the Division 1 finals series.

Lilydale were victorious against Deer Park 83 shots to 66 with Lilydale not having to complete the last end as their lead was too great a gap for Deer Park to overcome.

The final was held at Doncaster Bowls Club on a grass rink.

Lilydale was well-supported by a large contingent of its members, all wearing their club shirts as a sign of solidarity.

People may consider lawn bowls as a very sedate sport.

However, the barracking throughout the match by both team’s supporters, mirrored anything that you would expect at the footy (without the profanities).

At half time, Lilydale had a handy lead of 12, with two rinks down and two rinks up.

There was no time for complacency as any quality team can soon bridge the gap with a few ends.

Last week, Deer Park and Lilydale both qualified to play in the Victorian Bowls Premier League for the 2017-18 season.

Hence, it was both teams’ first encounter at playing a Premier League side.

After the half-time break, the weather threatened with a few spots of rain.

Fortunately, that’s all that was to fall, as any rain would have had an effect on the running of the green.

Once more, the game was played in a fine spirit by both teams.

At the conclusion of the game,

the Lilydale team was congratulated in a moving speech.

Congratulations also go to the Lilydale Board of Management, which had a vision two years ago and appointed a coach.

This year, they added and assistant coach, Josh Sanders, to aid Troy Stafford.

Finishing the season third on the ladder was a carefully crafted strategy.

It was the end of an era for the Mountain District Car and Bike Show on Sunday, 19 March, with founders Jackie and Greg Sheppard bowing out after 11 years at the wheel.

Pegasus Rod and Custom Club has taken on organisation and ownership of the event ensuring its future after health challenges forced Jackie to step back.

The show started in Monbulk and moved to Healesville in 200x becoming a popular event with the local community and bringing car and bike enthusiasts from around Victoria to Healesville.

A major driver behind the event was the opportunity to raise funds for local charities and in the decade leading up to this year’s show, around $98,000 had been poured back into various causes throughout Yarra Ranges, the majority of it in Healesville.

The aim this year was to reach the $100,000, as a significant signoff milestone, and in officially thanking Jackie for the vision, commitment and hard work that has made the show such a success, Pegasus president Dietmar Munnecke, announced that a donation from this year’s show would achieve that goal ... and a little more.

In a tearful farewell, Jackie thanked all the sponsors, volunteers and entrants involved in the show saying she would treasure the relationships built up over the past 10 years.

She also thanked Pegasus for taking over the show and wished them success in the future.

Healesville Bendigo Community Bank manager, Mark Trafford, presented a certificate in recognition of the contribution the car show has made to the Healesville community.

The bank has been one of many sponsors of the event since it moved to Healesville over six years ago.

Mr Trafford said the bank had enjoyed a great partnership with the car show, and in particular with Jackie, and had great admiration for the personal resilience and determination she had showed, most notably in view of recent health challenges.

Mr Munnecke said their first show had also been challenging with the extreme heat impacting on numbers, but that they were looking forward to a great future for the event.

“Effectively, we had eight weeks to put it together.

“We have been helping Jackie out with volunteers for the show for eight of her 10 years, and in that time had rain, heat and all sorts of weather to deal with, so we will be working on this now throughout the year to make it a bigger and better event next year.

Mr Munnecke thanked all the 2017 sponsors and volunteers and the car and bike enthusiasts who made the show such a spectacle.

Meanwhile, the name of the show will change next year to reflect Pegasus Rod and Custom Club’s new venture.
