Rape case fuels push for sex attack court reform

By Mandy Oakham The campaign for justice for Geelong victims of sexual assault took a step forward this week.

The week saw saturation media coverage of the case of a then 14-year-old girl allegedly raped by three men at St Albans Park in November 2015.

Charges against the three were withdrawn last month with the victim being too traumatised to appear in court.

Services to help such victims will be extended in the next couple of months and organisations such as Barwon Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) will be stepping up their campaign demanding reforms to the criminal justice system.

One of the first areas to see improvement locally will be the staffing levels at Barwon CASA headquarters in Spring Street, Geelong West.

There are currently around 100 staff based at the headquarters combining the expertise of counsellors, police, doctors and specially trained child protection officers from the Department of

Human Services.

Barwon CASA chief executive officer Helen Bolton said that the community was “bewildered and confused” when high profile cases like the St Albans case do not proceed.

“Here at CASA we want to just wrap our arms around victims when they come to us and we will be stepping up our campaign to help,” Helen said.

There are two things that the CASA campaign will focus on, the first being to provide a full roster of properly qualified doctors to provide a full forensic examination of those wanting to report an assault.

In the past two years Barwon CASA has overseen 65 crisis case examinations and only 29 of those were conducted in Geelong.

The second major objective of the campaign will be to provide a remote facility to allow victims to give evidence away from the courtroom and their attackers.

In Geelong there is a facility but it is located within the Geelong Courts precinct therefore

victims have to sit in the open foyer of the courts before being called.

“Just walking into those Geelong courts can be extremely traumatising for victims even before they face the pressure of the legal system during a trial,” Helen said.

“In our current system, the only way that perpetrators are held accountable to face court hinges on the victim’s evidence.

“Therefore we have an obligation to provide every support to victims to enable this to occur safely.

“These people need to be assured that there is a safe place for them to go and report their cases.

“There is no compulsion for these people to proceed with legal cases if they don’t feel able to but we want to ensure that if they do decide to proceed that they are going to have all the help possible available to them locally.”

Ms Hutchins announced the changes following a controversial recommendation by the Citizens’ Jury.

The State Government commissioned the Geelong Citizens’ Jury in 2016 to provide recommendations for the city’s council, including how to elect the mayor.

Initially the jury voted in favour of keeping the directly-elected mayor but was unable to reach an 80 per cent ‘super majority’.

On the third vote the jury’s organisers switched to a different voting system where the councilelected mayor option won 84 to 79 per cent.

“I think they got the answer they engineered,” Mr Guy said.

“Natalie Hutchins has presided over a complete stitch up and she knows it. This whole thing from the start has been a political exercise.”

Mr Guys said Geelong ratepayers should be able to elect their mayor and deputy mayor on the same ticket, like the City of Melbourne.

“It’s crazy that the State Government is treating Geelong like a suburb.”

But he admitted the Baillieu government, which introduced the directly-elected mayor, should have based it on the ‘Melbourne model’ in the first place.

“It didn’t have a complementary council structure.”

Ms Hutchison commended the jury for designing a “path forward that will have long-term benefits for their city.”

“We support the jury’s recommendation,” she said.

Let the sun shine in Barwon Water’s first solar energy project is a step closer with a contract for its design and construction awarded to Beon Energy Solutions.

The array of 2880 panels at Barwon Water’s Black Rock environmental precinct will feed renewable energy directly to the Black Rock Water Reclamation Plant - the corporation’s largest energy using site.

At a rated capacity of 1,000 kilowatts (1 megawatt), the project will generate around 1,300,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year, which is enough to power about 300 homes, and save around 1500 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The project will initially save more than $130,000 in yearly operating costs and will increase if grid electricity prices rise.

A committee of the Australian Parliament has commenced an inquiry into how the federal family law system can more effectively respond to the needs of those affected by family violence.

Chair of the Committee Sarah Henderson MP said the inquiry would consider the effectiveness of the federal family law system in supporting and protecting those affected by family violence, especially those who are most at risk.

“Each of us has a role in speaking out against family violence and preventing violence before it occurs,” Ms Henderson said.

“At the same time, we must ensure that the family law system provides adequate support and protection in cases where family violence has occurred.

“In carrying out the inquiry, the committee will consider what has been done so far - and what more can be done - to meet the needs of vulnerable people in family law proceedings.”

MPs in stoush over penalty rates The decision will reduce penalty rates for at least 17,000 people in Geelong or 22 per cent of the city’s workforce.

“There’ll be a whole lot of people out there who are highly reliant on that money,” Mr Marles said.

In a union protest outside Ms Henderson’s office on Sunday, local workers attempted to deliver 350 letters opposing the cuts but found her office closed.

Belmont resident and hospitality worker William Olsen was scathing of the Ms Henderson’s “silence” on the issue.

“If Sarah Henderson just sits back and says nothing while thousands of locals get a huge pay cut, we’ll never forgive her,” he said.

By Luke Voogt Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has abandoned workers reliant on penalty rates by failing to oppose recent cuts, Corio MP Richard Marles has said.

Ms Henderson’s “inaction” on the recent Fair Work Australia (FWA) decision to cut Sunday and public holiday penalty rates showed she supported it, he said.

“From a Labor point of view we will do everything in our power to protect penalty rates.

“Sarah Henderson should be doing the same, or least be admitting that she and her government support this decision by Fair Work Australia.”

“The next person in Waurn Ponds copping a huge pay cut will be her, when we chuck her out at the next election.

“If Sarah Henderson gets $200,000 a year without having to turn up to work on a Sunday, the least she can do is defend her constituents who rely on penalty rates.”

But Ms Henderson described the unions’ personal attack on her work ethic as “pathetic”, saying she worked long hours that weekend.

“On Sunday I started working early afternoon, flew to Canberra and finished working in my Parliament House office at 10.30pm.”

Ms Henderson called Labor “complete hypocrites over penalty rates”, pointing out the unions’ enterprise bargaining agreements with

big retailers.

“Labor has worked hand-in-hand with the union movement to abolish weekend penalty rates for thousands of workers (in) large retail,” she said.

But Mr Marles said such criticisms showed a “real ignorance” of enterprise bargaining agreements.

“They’re getting something in exchange for the reduction of penalty rates - they are getting a higher base rate.”

“You can talk about workers at KFC or McDonald’s but it completely misses the point. (The FWA decision) it is just a straight cut in conditions.”

Geelong residents have raised $37,478 to help a young Clifton Springs mother undergo lifechanging brain surgery in Sydney this month.

Courtney Gibbs was “out of sorts” as she recovered at her parents’ home in NSW after the 15 March operation but it did little to dampen her gratitude.

“I’m blown away,” the 28-year-old said.

Courtney developed a pineal cystic tumour which had been causing severe nausea, memory loss and other symptoms.

With the cist growing, her condition had been likely to worsen.

“With something on your brain at some point it’s going to be life-threatening but I wasn’t telling people that I was dying,” Courtney said.

Courtney and husband Cody had been about to buy their first home together but with $42,000 in upfront costs they had to “rethink it all”.

“All our savings have gone into my brain, pretty much,” Courtney said.

“Our medical bills aren’t going to stop

for a while.”

Add to that the challenge of caring for their 10-month-old son Hunter.

Luckily, Courtney’s four parents-in-law (Cody’s parents both remarried) in Clifton Springs were “amazing”.

“They had to be around every single day before Cody flew home to be with me,” Courtney said.

The couple were nervous about starting a fundraising page.

Northern Geelong residents again showed their solidarity on the streets in Norlane on Wednesday for the suburb’s second Harmony Walk.

Walk organiser and resident Jaki Tidmas hoped the walk would be a yearly event.

“I think the people that are here are really passionate about seeing peace and harmony in their neighbourhood,” she said as she walked with the crowd.

Locals organised the walk in 2016 after a group of youths attacked three girls, who were in their early teens and wearing headscarves, at Evans Reserve.

Jaki said the walk was a reminder that neighbours could conquer hate together.

“They want something to do but they don’t necessarily know how to do it. Norlane and Corio kind of have a bad name but I love living in the

northern suburbs of Geelong.”

About 150 people braved rain for the Harmony Walk, which was down on last year’s inaugural figure of 200.

Fellow resident Simon Reeve said streets and parks should be places of safety and inclusion for everyone - especially children.

“We value and welcome all people, regardless of their background,” he said.

“Norlane is a great place to live, work and visit.

“By walking together for harmony we are showing that Norlane is a wonderful and diverse neighbourhood.”

Urban Seed Norlane, Geelong City, Northern Bay and North Geelong Secondary colleges and Diversitat teamed up to organise the event.

“As neighbours we should be looking after one another and working together to make our neighbourhoods great places in which to live,” Simon said.

Machete attack in home invasion A Thomson man has narrowly survived a violent home invasion after a group of attackers broke into his house early on Wednesday morning.

The 31-year-old man was in his bedroom when three or four people allegedly attacked him, one with a machete, detectives said.

“It’s incredibly violent,” Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Gary Wilson said. “It would be horrible to wake up to that.”

“I would say it was an edged weapon. I still

And the long, long hot summer has resulted in a bumper crop of Kutee Kittees out at the Geelong Animal Welfare Centre and they are all looking for new homes.

For the fur servants at the centre, this extended Indian summer has meant they are coping with a truly extended kitten season but it is not proving to be a total cat-astrophe!

As community engagement manager at the centre Pip Hunt explained, kitten season normally starts in late November and goes through to about January but March’s summer bonus has meant that kittens are still arriving at the centre and they are all looking for new “forever homes”.

“We have been absolutely inundated with kittens but thankfully we have also been overwhelmed with people’s generosity opening up their hearts and homes to all our new arrivals,” Pip said.

“We are so grateful to Geelong people for their support as we receive absolutely no government funding so we are totally reliant on people’s donations and our adoptions.”

In fact, so welcoming has Geelong been that two weeks ago the centre set an all-time new record of 78 adoptions in one week!

But there are still 64 pussy cats, young and old, looking for homes and amazingly only four dogs waiting to dribble and drool in a new home.

There many other animals at the centre but they are being put through their various health checks, desexing and microchipping to make sure they are purrfect for adoption.

Those who have been given paws for thought and are interested in having another fur mouth to feed can hop onto the website or get their tail out to the centre on Portarlington Road, Moolap, and the fur servants at GAWS defy them to leave empty-handed.

Mum still in the dark over seizures

By Mandy Oakham Imagine having to wait nearly two years to find out what is wrong with your child.

Grovedale mother Sarah Murnane knows this frustration all too well as she watched for nearly two years her beautiful baby girl suffer from epileptic “absence“ seizures, as well as chronic jerking seizures.

As an aftermath of these seizures, sometimes her daughter Mahalia would suffer from falls, and sometimes she could lose her ability to talk for days after.

Sarah first noticed something was wrong with Mahalia when she was just five months old.

After rushing her daughter to Geelong Hospital, Sarah waited for a diagnosis. On examing the little girl, doctors could not provide a definitive answer.

This was the beginning of an incredibly exhuasting struggle for the Murnane family. It took a further 19 months, just before she blew out the candles on her second birthday cake, before the family were given a definite diagnosis for Mahalia’s condition.

Sarah explains that this was because Mahalia actually didn’t experience a seizure during the times she was in hospital and being tested.

“There are so many misconceptions out there about epilepsy and there is still actually some stig-

ma out there as well because people are frightened of the seizures,“ Sarah said.

“I would just urge people if they think there is something wrong with their child just keep on going back and back to the doctors and keep on telling them they have to give you an answer.“ Life in the Murnane family is now a little more settled as planning is the key in the management of Mahalia’s form of epilepsy. And five-year-old big sister Layla plays her role as well keeping an eye on her little sister and alerting her mother if she sees any changes in her behaviour.

“Every child is different and you have to take medical advice, but in Mahalia’s case we are hopeful that she may have the type of epilepsy which means that she doesn’t need to take medication, and that eventually she may grow out of the seizures,“ Sarah said.

“But, of course, we have to manage the situation very carefully and put plans in place for anywhere that she is visiting like her child care centre.

“It used to be truly terrifying watching your child have a seizure and then watching as the seizure finished and just not knowing what was going to happen next.“ March is Epilepsy Awareness month, and this Sunday, 26 March, the Geelong palm trees in the city will be rocking their purple hues to remind people of the many facets of this complex condition.

Trapped by legs in ‘T-bone’ crash

By Luke Voogt A ‘T-bone’ collision left a 30-year-old driver trapped in his car by his legs until CFA and SES crews could free him.

“SES and CFA crews have worked together to remove the driver’s side of the vehicle,” said South Barwon SES media liaison Scott Clark.

Two cars collided on the corner of GeelongBallan Road and Steiglitz Road, Moorabool, about 12.45pm on Monday.

One car sustained extensive damage on the driver’s side, trapping the driver.

Rescue crews spent roughly 30 minutes freeing the man with the ‘jaws of life’ before helping paramedics to extricate him.

An air ambulance flew the man to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition with multiple injuries.

Paramedics took a man and a woman in their thirties, and a man in his twenties to Geelong hospital with minor injuries.

Mr Clark described long weekend traffic coming back from the Surf Coast as a “disaster” with cars backed up along the Geelong Ring Road.

He said the accident served as “a timely reminder” for motorists to take care as he returned to base with an SES rescue crew.

“Just be aware during long weekends there’s more traffic on the roads. Take more time to plan your trip and share the driving.”

The investigation into the crash continues.

A boom time for business awards

Local fishers could reel in huge whiting hauls in the near future, according to the latest Fisheries Victoria numbers.

The authority found juvenile King George whiting numbers six times higher in Port Phillip Bay than in 2014 and 2015.

Geelong fishing expert Chris Pitman said the numbers were excellent news for local fishers.

“It can only help fishing out over the years although it’s going to take time.”

Fisheries Victoria executive director Travis Dowling said whiting would grow to catchable size from spring 2018 onwards.

“The annual surveys have been undertaken around the bay since 1998 and are a reliable predictor of future catches.

“The bumper whiting catches enjoyed by anglers in recent times are the result of exceptional juvenile whiting numbers detected in the 2013 survey.”

Mr Dowling said the tiny whiting larvae drifted eastward for about three months before entering Port Phillip Bay in spring.

The authority’s scientists conducted surveys in seagrass beds which are fish’s favoured habitat.

“Westerly winds help drive the currents that bring the whiting larvae into the bay, where they take about two years to reach the legal minimum size of 27cm,” Mr Dowling said.

“The high numbers recorded in the most recent survey were once again consistent with a 2016 winter-spring climate characterised by frequent and strong westerly winds.”

Mr Dowling reminded anglers of the daily bag limit of 20 King George whiting per person.

The whiting are part of a new research project, funded by recreational fishing licence fees, tracking their movement leaving the bay and spawning locations.

Geelong will host an extra business awards expo this month due to “extremely high levels of interest”, the city’s chamber of commerce announced Tuesday.

More than 200 businesses have attended the three Geelong Business Excellence Awards Expos at the waterfront so far.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Bernadette Uzelac was thrilled by the response of the local business community.

“There’s been unprecedented interest from businesses across the region,” she said.

The expos are an opportunity for people to meet past winners and members of the judging panel.

“I’ve been impressed by the range of businesses interested in being part of this year’s awards process,” Ms Uzelac added.

“Some have entered in previous years while others are potential first-time entrants.”

Ms Uzelac praised the award judges for giving up their time to advise business owners on their entry applications and the judging process.

“We encourage every Geelong business, whether big or small, to enter and get behind the awards this year.”

The fourth information expo will take place on 27 March at Deakin University’s Waterfront campus.

Entries for the awards close on 22 May.

By Luke Voogt A dedicated group of Lara preschoolers took to the streets with red T-shirts and balloons to raise money for Heart Foundation Tuesday.

Kindergarten teacher Nicole Haustorfer organised the “mini-walk” in memory of her father John “Johno” Spencer, who died of a sudden heart attack in 2015.

“They were all very excited,” she said. “They really got into it.”

Later the kids discussed keeping healthy and supporting local charities, before drawing pictures of Johno.

“It was cute,” Nicole said. “All the pictures came out with little moustaches.”

“We didn’t want to overload them with information - we were just showing the kids how to get

on board in their community.”

The youngsters and their parents added an extra $102 for this Saturday 25 March Walk for Johno.

“It wasn’t really about the money,” Nicole said.

“We’re just trying to get as many families on board as we can - everyone knows someone who’s had a heart attack or heart issues.”

Two weeks ago The Indy spoke to Nicole’s sister and Walk for Johno creator Rebekah Spencer, who hoped to smash last year’s mark of $11,000.

Donors had raised $5251 this Tuesday for the walk, which covers 37km from Queenscliff Rail Trail to Eastern Gardens.

“I think it’s amazing what she’s doing,” Nicole said.

“We’re trying to do as much as we can for her.”

MP for Corangamite Sarah Henderson (Double Take, Indy, 17 March) has been rightfully challenged to go into bat for Avalon Airport expansion: despite it being adjacent to her electorate, but fundamentally a Turnbull Government responsibility.

Could it be that paltry federal funding for the GOR and a regional $20 million petty cash advance have occurred because MP Henderson has been sent to Coventry because of her unrequited support for Tony Abbott?

Member for Lara John Eren has done little to advance the cause and ditto Corio MP Richard Marles who was most aptly noted in a recent local daily as being "almost legendary in his disinterest and avoidance of local affairs".

Hence together with G21’s current lack of focus, an underwhelming City of Greater Geelong, Committee for Geelong and Geelong Chamber of Commerce, there’s a potpourri of reasons why Avalon Airport remains an under-performer.

All money, no mouth I have for some years had a problem with Jeff Kennett’s Beyondblue organisation, simply over the facts related to Beyondblue’s funding, and its services.

Four or five years ago I looked at the Beyondblue annual report, to find that the organisation was funded by government, and other means, to the tune of some $38 million.

The board seemed stacked with “suits”, and Beyondblue’s funds were used to “fund research". The glaring anomaly with Beyondblue is that it does not offer any shopfront services such as counselling, or anything similar.

I find this extraordinary, in that government money seems to easily finds its way to Beyondblue, but other community organisations doing far more, seemingly, than Beyondblue, struggle for every scrap of funding they ever get. Perhaps one’s organisation has to be “in the know?”

He's got the power I would like to start by congratulating Greg Abramovitch (Letters, 10 March) on an article that was well-written, amusing and most importantly accurate - something that has been lacking in many of the letters on this subject.

I would like to cover a few important points: 1. To my knowledge, Engie, the owner of Hazelwood was not asked to close the power station. One of the reasons they chose to close it was that Hazelwood is at the end of its usable life. It is old, worn out and has been under-invested in for years.

2. People such as Peter Rees and Tim Saclier (Letters, 17 March) like to compare the cost of renewables with the cost of coal-fired power stations. In doing this comparison, they never seem to consider that they are comparing the written down cost of an old coal power station against the new cost of wind or solar. I wonder how this comparison would look if they considered the cost of electricity from a ‘new’ coal power station.

3. Further, there never seems to be any acknowledgement of the cost of the pollution generated by burning coal - not only atmospheric

Among the emotional words from Peter Rees attacking renewables (Letters, 17 March). Then Tim Saclier provides comforting words like ‘high efficiencies, low emission, strengthen security’ for all things coal (Letters, March 17).

Well, 'insane’ is ignoring the fact that CO2 is a greenhouse gas and is the single over-riding reason we must move away from coal. It is known that the reserves of coal in the ground are so large that 80 per cent of it must be left there if we are to have any hope of keeping the temperature rise below two degrees C. Saclier’s 'High Efficiency Low Emissions’ is the new propaganda tool from the coal lobby and is blatant in its use to mislead. No matter how clean and low emission coal is promoted as being, every tonne burned will still put 2.9 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. This is basic chemistry and it can’t be reduced without sequestration, which is still so impractical that even the deniers have stopped mentioning it.

As for new high efficiency, even the World Coal Association only claims an improvement from 33 to 40 per cent. So 60 per cent of the energy from coal will still go up the chimney. That’s inefficiency.

But out of these, I like Rees’s 'creeping cancer’ the best.

Living End live in town, on tour

By Luke Voogt Australian rock legends The Living End will hit Geelong next Thursday for their long-awaited regional tour.

“We haven’t done a regional tour for five or six years,” the band's Andy Strachan said Monday after a Byron Bay show the night before.

The Geelong gig is a short drive down for the drummer, who moved to Barwon Heads a decade ago.

“I used to go surfing at 13th beach a lot,” Strachan said.

“I found myself getting in the car and not wanting to go home.”

Strachan landed the dream gig in 2002 after years “going from one band to another” and “working sh_t jobs” in Melbourne.

He remembered the fateful call from The Living End double bassist Scott Owen after mutual friends introduced them.

“I was cooking a chicken risotto - as you do and he rang,” he said. “I thought he was just one of my mates taking the piss.“ Strachan had just returned from a tour with alternative rock band Pollyanna and was about to move back to his home city Adelaide “to get a proper job”.

“I moved to Melbourne with stars in my eyes looking to follow my rock and roll dream,” he said.

“We’d actually packed the house up. But I got the call and the rest is history.”

Strachan started playing as a teen with the 50s and 60s in Adelaide cover band The Runaways.

Remarkably, his future comrades Chris Cheney and Scott Owen played in their own 50s and 60s cover band in Melbourne during 1992 titled The Runaway Boys.

“It’s just hilarious - we didn’t even know that until we got chatting one day,” Strachan said.“Although I’m sure their band was cooler

than mine - I was just a 14-year-old kid and my band mates were all in their 50s.”

There’s a lot of “love” in The Living End despite Owen moving to Byron Bay and Cheney spending most of his time recording in America, Strachan said.

“Once we’re all in a room together, there’s so much energy. There’s a lot of bands that have relationship issues, but we all give each other enough space.”

The band has played in front of huge crowds, including the 2016 AFL Grand Final, but “even last night (at Byron) was a highlight,” Strachan said.

“We’re so bloody lucky - to do what we do and watch people’s minds being blown it’s just a such beautiful thing.”

He never gets tired of Owen thrilling crowds by straddling and spinning his double bass.

“He’s quite an acrobat - he’s going to kill him-

self one day,” he said.

The boys will belt out some “meaty riffs” at the Wool Exchange on 30 March like Strachan’s favourite How Do We Know.

And, of course, they’ll play the songs that started it all - like Prisoner of Society, he said.

“I don’t like beer cans being thrown at my head, so I think it’s pretty safe to say we’ll play that.”

By Mandy Oakham Mark Holden is hoping to score a “touchdown” with the story of his family’s travelling circus in a colourful show at Drysdale’s Potato Shed tonight, Friday 24 March.

The original Holden Brothers, all 10 of them, played instruments and travelled with the circus all over Australia, but always returned to their own patch around Drysdale/St Leonards for the winter.

“I have developed this story from its roots in the beautiful Bellarine and I want to plant it back out there at the Potato Shed,” Holden said.

“And what is amazing about this story is that my family were entertaining the people through

the circus from 1892 and here, more than 125 years later, there are still Holdens living in areas like Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, still entertaining people with their music.”

The show, which is of course called The Greatest Show on Earth, is still in development as Holden continues to research the amazing adventures of this huge circus family.

“I will be singing songs on Friday night and showing pictures and I also want to reconnect with people who are still living in the area as I am sure there are people out there who will have stories to tell me,” Holden said.

“The thing that I love about my family is that they were all musicians and I’ve inherited that. It’s something that has lasted in our family for as long

as there have been people in Victoria.”

The show will eventually feature characters such as a one-legged trapeze artist and circus founder Adolphus Holden.

Holden hopes to bring the completed show back to the Potato Shed later in the year.

One of the more poignant aspects of Friday night’s show will be the chance to hear the voices of the local Wathaurong people who were the original owners of lands around the Bellarine and who were dispossessed by the farming developments of families like the Holdens. A member of that community Mick Ryan will be performing alongside Holden on the night. The two have worked together on recording a song called Kill Parties which tells the story of the kill parties used

to intercept the Wathaurong peoples as they travelled towards the coast.

Holden made his name in the mid-1970s as the good-looking, carnation-carrying pop star with hits like Never Gonna Fall in Love Again and Last Romance.

He would later gain fame - and notoriety - as a judge on Australian Idol and a contestant on Dancing with the Stars.

As well as telling his family’s story through pictures and songs, the 62 year old will spend the day conducting song writing workshops with students from local secondary colleges.

Temperamental to core

By Luke Voogt East Melbourne tribute rockers Cindy ChinQuan and Will Cook take method acting to the next level.

The real-life partners play Geelong-born rock goddess Chrissy Amphlett and band-mate and long-time boyfriend McEntee in their cover band Temperamental.

People often asked the couple how they managed it, Cook said.

“You find a way to separate work from life I actually enjoy working with Cindy to be quite honest.

“We’ve been asked if we want to work for other people. You get me a better singer and we’ll go from there.”

Like Amphlett and McEntee of The Divinyls, Chin-Quan and Cook have been together for 20 years, after meeting at a Ringwood pub gig.

But the similarities end there - the pair enjoys a relatively harmonious relationship compared to the drug and alcohol fuelled violence of Amphlett and McEntee.

“We have the odd fight over direction and creativity, but I couldn’t ask for a better, more supportive partner,” Chin-Quan said.

“I can only imagine what it would have been like for (the Divinyls) in the studio.”

The couple started the tribute act while ChinQuan was studying a Master of Teaching in Melbourne in 2013.

Previously, she had made a career as a singersongwriter and guitarist.

“My brother said ‘why don’t you go do the Divinyls - you’d be great at it’,” Chin-Quan said.

“I thought that would be a good way to earn on the money. We basically got some friends in the industry and went from there.”

When you’re doing tributes, you’ve gotta get the best line-up you can get.”

GET ME OUT OF HERE: 'Chrissy Amphlett' belts one out.

That line-up got them a gig on an Australian pay TV cover band show in 2014.

“For me, it’s more being able to sing at my age,” Chin-Quan said. “I’m no spring chicken.”

Chin-Quan was able to “belt out“ Amplett’s hits despite her diminutive stature, thanks to her upbringing, she said.

“I’ve had to scream over eight older siblings."

“Maintaining the tone through two hours is extremely hard, but I think I’m doing alright being someone who’s not been a trained singer their whole life.”

Amphlett grew up in Geelong and went to Belmont High School, and Cook said returning

to the late-rock icon’s home town had a special meaning for Temperamental.

“This is actually our first show down there when we’re not at a festival.”

Chin-Quan was also looking forward to playing at The Sphinx on 25 March.

“We love coming down there,” she said.

“A lot of the friends she went to school with come to see us - so it’s quite emotional when we go down there.”

When you’ve been doing it for 20 years you sort of understand the journey she’s been on being a female in a male industry.”

Veteran cover artist Rick Charles will squeeze as much of three decades of music as possible into one hour in his next Geelong performance.

“We’ll be going down memory lane with all the golden classics,” he told the Indy Monday.

Charles will cover Elvis and Charlie Pride to Johnny Cash and Tom Jones in a musical journey spanning from the 50s to 70s.

The Morning Melodies concert will be his first gig at the Sphinx since 1995, he said.

The versatile singer VERSATILE: The multihas performed as huntalented Rick Charles in dreds of iconic artists action. for 26 years and isn’t slowing down.

“I still average 25 to 30 jobs a month - I’m working every day,” he said.

The 52-year-old’s repertoire of more than 2500 songs spans seven decades, from 1950s country to modern artists like Meaghan Trainor.

“I’ve covered virtually every different rock song there is,” he said. “I’ve got close to 600 songs just on Elvis.”

“Although they won’t be getting all them at The Sphinx as it’s only an hour.”

Charles has a number of unique credits to his name like performing at Kerry Paker’s 60th birthday and coming third in an international Elvis competition.

“I’ve played at virtually every Casino in Australia,” he said. “I’m back at Crown with the Viva Las Vegas special this Friday.

Charles said he would be happy to take crowd requests when he plays at the Sphinx on 29 March.

“If they yell it out loud enough, I’ll be more than happy to do it.”

When Daryl and Julie Hardy purchased Mexican Graffiti 14 years ago, it was more a Geelong icon than a restaurant.

“It’s been operating for about 35 years,” Daryl says.

The Lovely Banks couple bought the eatery after they had been dating for just a year.

“Because Julie was a local, she knew the business - we thought yeah we’ll have a go at it,” Daryl says.

The banker and salesman learnt the business as they went and 15 years later they’re still going strong.

“All our seven children have worked there or will. Our son is about to turn 15, and he’s really looking forward to it.”

SPORT are all fired Collins books for big one Cats up for flag quest Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club third XI has progressed through to this weekend’s grand final following a dominant win against Ringwood.

Batting first, Geelong got off to a great start with a 74-run opening stand, Josh Collins the dominant batsman with a patient 90, while Jack Rogers did his bit making 44.

The rest of the team inched their way to 8/227 before a bold declaration.

When Ringwood reached 0/55 in reply, things looked grim, but three quick wickets, two of those to Luke Guest, saw the Cats right back in the hunt.

Despite some nervous moments, two late wickets to Billy Hyde saw Geelong claim a 43-run win.

This weekend the side will meet St Kilda in the big one, a team they beat comfortably earlier in the season.

In Geelong Cricket Association, it’s grand final weekend in all grades, with some mouth-watering games scheduled all across the region.

In division one, Grovedale have kept their hopes of back-to-back flags alive, following a stirring come from behind win against North Geelong.

On Saturday, the Tigers were rocked early by North speedster Cam Alford claiming the first four wickets as they fell to 4/20.

But a rear-guard action followed, as the lower

order knuckled down on a flat wicket and grinded their way to 181. Nick Hyden top scored with 41, while Barry Tsitas made 40.

Day two started well for the Magpies, reaching 27 before Lachie Szponar was run out.

From there the rot set in, as speedster Chris Young cut a swathe through the strong batting line up, the big left-hander finishing with 7/41 as North posted a disappointing 130.

In the other preliminary final, Murghebolucs fantastic season came to a grinding halt when they came up against a ruthless St Joseph’s.

The Frogs batted first but came up against the most in-form bowler in the competition, Frank Gill, who took his second five wicket haul in as many weeks to help dismiss Murgheboluc for just 135.

In reply, Luke Ibbs and Justin Foss made 67 not out each to cruise to a 10 wicket win.

So the two best sides in the competition now meet in the big one.

While Grovedale know they can get the job done when it counts, their top order is badly out of form and they can’t afford to leave it up to their tail to bail them out again.

St Joseph’s form on the other hand is impeccable, and with such an even spread of talented players all in top form, they will start as deserved favourites.

In division two, Highton will take on Newcomb & District in the grand final after the Heat ensured Bell Park’s season finished in straight sets.

Batting first on a flat wicket at Marshall, Highton were led by a magnificent unbeaten ton to Luke Buckland, while veteran Luke Daffy made 69 in the team’s total of 7/288.

The Dragons lost both openers early on Sunday, but wouldn’t go down that easily putting together some decent partnerships.

However, in the end 288 proved to be too much as Daffy and Alistair Ross took four wickets each in a 59 run win.

Newcomb & District didn’t have such an easy ride through, winning an absolute thriller against Thomson.

The Dinos batted first, Simon Anderson top scoring with 55 in a total of 170. In reply, Thomson got off to a positive start, knocking off 70 runs to finish day one, but at the cost of four wickets.

On day two, the Tigers inched their way to 6/142 and would have been considered favourites from there, but when Braden Szponar dismissed Louis Bentley for 72, the game changed.

Tigers skipper Adam Bliss inched them forever closer, but when he fell for 16, his team was five runs short in an agonising finish to their season.

So we have a grand final that no one saw coming, but that brings with it an exciting level of intrigue.

It’s hard to pick a winner, but Newcomb & District’s close finals wins may just give them the belief they have composure to get the job done in a tight game.

BITING: Happy anglers reeled in good hauls of whiting on Corio Bay just off Queenscliff.

Corio Bay a hive for anglers with plenty taking the bait ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers had a short trip to reel in good numbers of pinkie, snapper and flathead from angler’s bank on Corio Bay. Fishers boated flathead and pinkie snapper with soft plastics from Grammar School Lagoon through to the spoil grounds out from Lime Burners boat ramp.

Three to four inch gulp soft plastics rigged on a jig head heavy enough to get to the bottom were most productive.

Around the corner, Clifton Springs had similar results but with a few more whiting thrown into the mix.

Fishing bait like pippies on a running sinker rig along the Curlewis Bank during late afternoon was productive.

Squid were still on offer in three to four metres of water. Size three artificial jigs over the numerous weed beds worked well with some bag limit captures.

Queenscliff was a hot spot for the region with massive King George whiting spread from the grass beds to the east of the harbour though to the Point Lonsdale Bight. Chris from Gone Fishing Charters again guided his clients onto well-conditioned King

George whiting larger than 40cm.

Inside the Queenscliff Harbour, silver trevally snapped up soft plastics worked on slack tide along the main channel.

Land based anglers also found reasonable numbers of squid at Queenscliff Pier during the evening.

Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads the odd Mako and Blue Shark made an appearance for those drifting out wide with a strong berley trail.

Drifting with baits down in 40 to 50m of water resulted in Tiger Flathead and good numbers too.

Inside the Barwon Estuary, there was a wide variety of species on the chew with mullet to mulloway being captured.

The lower reaches of the estuary saw good numbers of smaller model whiting and Australian salmon which made for a great option for the kids.

Further up the system, anglers chasing mulloway had some success with fish up to 90cm on offer.

Tuna continue to keep anglers busy right along the coast from just east of the rip to Portland the whole coast line is holding good schools of fish.

Trolling X-Rap lures along with small skirted lures is a very effective tactic and when the fish erupted on the surface in a feeding frenzy casting lures into the commotion was a very exciting way to fish.

Freshwater anglers who ventured down to Lake

Purrumbete crossed paths with huge numbers of redfin. Anglers trolling with the aid of a down rigger boated rainbow trout of 800g to just over 1kg using pink #55 Tassie devils rigged with Dancing Jack 54 hooks.

Next door, Lake Bullen Merri was another hot spot for Chinook salmon and Rainbow trout to 1.5kg.

Casting lures from the lake margins worked as well as trolling again the aid of a down rigger to reach the depths the fish were holding at.

The Barwon River showed no signs of slowing down for carp with anglers landing fish to just over 6kg.

The Cats will face the Dockers and a fired up Fremantle crowd as they begin their quest for the 2017 flag at Domain Stadium Sunday.

“It will be pretty fiery over there, I imagine,” said Geelong coach Chris Scott.

Cats fans will hope for stellar performances from Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield, who starred last year with 31 disposals and four goals.

“I think it’s bleeding obvious we’ve got two exceptional midfielders,” Scott said, sick of addressing media commentary on Geelong’s “overreliance” on the pair.

The Cats will be without Selwood’s brother Scott who was likely to return in round 3.

“He’s done a fair amount of work, but just hasn’t been able to get that final 5 or 10 per cent of intensity,” Scott said Wednesday.

Defender Jake Kolodjashnij was also unlikely to return for a few weeks.

“It’s disappointing for us that he is not available as he is someone we’ve earmarked to help transition our slightly ageing defensive group,” Scott said.

Fremantle only won four games last year, but Scott said the Cats would be facing a greatly changed side.

“I think they’re going to be a pretty big team this year.”

While the retirement of Fremantle great Matthew Pavlich will pose one less threat for the Cats, Scott was still wary of the Docker’s forward line.

The Dockers have recruited promising forward Cam McCarthy (GWS) and former Cat Shane Kersten to bolster its attack.

“They’ve clearly got some weapons there that they didn’t have last year,” Scott said.

Fremantle will also take the field without pesky forward Hayden Ballantine.

“They’ll replace him with a good player, there’s no doubt about that,” Scott said.

“They’ve been able to replace some really, really good players with some really, really good players, which is annoying.”

Midfield superstar Nat Fyfe will lead the Dockers for the first time after returning from a broken leg.

Scott told a media conference Wednesday he and the club had agreed “in principle” to him coaching for at least three more years.

“I was going to say I don’t really want to talk about the detail, but I’m kind of sick of putting it off,” “I’m committed for at least that time and longer to be frank. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve been there since October -the club’s committed to me and I’m absolutely committed to them.”

Some unexpected teams could challenge for the flag in what looks to be a very even season, Scott said.

“There are also some nice opportunities for the teams that have been outside the eight for a period of time. You’ve got these teams that have been building for a long time.”

Scott was also looking forward to seeing rookies Zac Guthrie, Bradon Parfitt and Tom Stewart making their debuts in the near future.
