Community involvement is at the forefront of some big changes for the Mount Evelyn Library.

A new partnership with Mount Evelyn Community House (MECH), Eastern Regional Libraries (ERL) and Yarra Ranges Council saw the library transition into a reading room on Monday 20 March.

As part of the transition, MECH coordinator Nicky Cordello said Mount Evelyn Community House members could enjoy some exciting changes including extended opening hours and a range of community programs and workshops.

“The community house in general is looking to enhance the existing service,” Ms Cordello said.

“The reading room is based on community needs.”

Yarra Ranges Council director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said the reading room would operate similarly to Yarra Glen’s Reading Room, operated by Yarra Glen Living and Learning Centre in partnership with council and Eastern Regional Libraries.

“Mount Evelyn’s Reading Room is about that connection for the community house, where they can broaden their connection with the town, from children to seniors,” Ms Wastie said.

“People can still self-borrow, selfcheck in, order books online to be picked up at Mount Evelyn, use printing and photocopying facilities as well as have access to Community House programs and the cafe.”

Walling Ward councillor and council’s representative on the Eastern Regional Libraries board, Len Cox, said having Mount Evelyn Community House run the reading room “makes sense”. “ ... (It) will help residents to engage in new programs to broaden their experiences and knowledge,” he said.

“Everyone will benefit from longer opening hours at the room, giving visitors more time to look for and enjoy good books in the heart of Mount Evelyn.

Hottest chilli van

By Derek Schlennstedt It definitely wasn’t too chilli at this year's Herb and Chilli Festival in Wandin which ended in more than just heart burn.

Proving that the chilli sauces at the event really are the hottest around, a Herb and Chilli van transporting some very hot chilli sauce burst into flames just before 7pm Sunday on the corner of Warburton

Highway and Quayle Road.

Luckily, no one was injured in the incident and the fire was promptly put out by Wandin Fire Brigade.

Clive Larkman, organiser of the event, said that his son had been driving to collect banners and signage which had been placed along the road prior to the event when he noticed the van smoking and promptly pulled over.

Within seven minutes the van

was ablaze and fire services had been called to attend the scene.

Both driver and passenger were in the car when it started smoking and escaped harm, though Clive says they were quite shaken by the incident.

Clive says that the fire did put a dampener on the celebrations - as it had been one of the most successful Herb and Chilli Festivals to date, but is thankful that no one was injured.

“Thankfully, no one was injured; they were just a bit shaken.”

“It was on a downer on the day, but the vehicle was insured, no one was hurt and there wasn’t much in the back just a few flags, so it was the best possible outcome of a very dangerous incident,” he says.

Despite jokes that the chilli’s spontaneously combusted, the real cause of the fire has not yet been identified.

Pet picnic for shelter at the lake What better way to spend a lazy Sunday than to head to Lilydale Lake for Animal Aid’s Annual Pet Picnic 26 March.

Chief executive officer of Animal Aid, Mark Menze, is extending an invitation to the community to come on down to the lake and experience a family fun day, with lots of activities for people and pets.

“This event not only provides an opportunity to celebrate the important role than animals play in our lives, but it is a great way to spend precious time with family, friends, colleagues and, of course, your pets,” Mr Menze said.

The popular SkyHigh Bistro and Restaurant was broken into some time between the evening of 19 March and the morning of 20 March.

Offenders who broke in caused considerable damage to the property and stole a safe from the premises.

Police were called on 20 March, and owners arrived to find items inside broken and missing.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit on 9739 2400 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Before court for burnouts Burnouts has brought a young male driver from Ferny Creek undone in the Upper Yarra over the weekend.

Warburton Sergeant Tom Wilkinson said visitors and locals were caught out.

A 23-year-old male from Ferny Creek will have to pay over $1000 in impound fees and appear before the court on a number of serious driving charges after police impounded his car.

He was caught doing burn-outs, watched by a number of spectators, on Mount Donna Buang on Friday night, 17 March.

“Having a spectator base heightens the risk of injury, and that’s our concern here,” Sgt Wilkinson said.

Wrong place, wrong time for bus A bus travelling along Belgrave-Gembrook Road collided with a falling branch on Wednesday 15 March at 7.20pm.

The 695 Belgrave to Gembrook bus was driving towards Emerald and had just passed Clematis Street when a branch broke power lines and fell in front of the bus.

Despite best attempts by the driver to stop, the bus collided and careened over the five metre branch which lay across the road.

Belgrave police, Selby Fire Brigade and an ambulance from Angliss Hospital attended the scene, though no injuries were sustained.

A passenger did bump their nose on the seat in front of them due to the sudden stop, however no treatment was required.

There was little damage sustained to the bus from the accident and CFA crews ued chainsaws to remove the branch debris from the road. The accident was cleared by 8pm.

Anger of the rorts When the news broke of the rorting of entitlements by the former Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Victorian parliaments, I was angry and so very disappointed.

Not just because the wrongdoing of any member of parliament reflects on all members of my profession - my anger was at the damage they have done to the role of Speaker, a role I hold in the highest regard and was very proud to hold in the last Parliament.

The first Speakers were elected in the 13th century, and the reason for having a Speaker was to control parliamentary debates, ensuring that every member was heard and treated with respect.

The Speaker was also chosen as a person of good character and standing, who would set very high standards of integrity and be an example to all Members of Parliament.

In fact, between 1399 and 1535, no fewer than seven Speakers lost their

heads because they refused to allow interference in the parliament's decisions and as such defied the King.

The proud tradition of this important role in the Victorian Parliament has been clearly damaged.

The former Speaker and Deputy Speaker have had to resign from these positions.

But rather than recall Parliament, the Premier allowed them to continue in their roles, with them still receiving extra pay for these positions for 10 more days after they were found out.

They should be forced to repay this extra cash.

The former Speaker’s offer to repay the $40,000 he rorted from taxpayers does not absolve him of the fact that he appears to have systematically and cynically rorted the taxpayers, the ordinary workers of Victoria.

He did not do it just once; he did it month after month after month.

He will go down in history as the first Speaker in more than 83 parliaments around the world that operate under the Westminster system to have admitted to claiming allowances in such a way.

It has also been reported that he circumnavigated the world on several occasions at taxpayers’ expense.

The action of the Former Deputy Speaker Don Nardella angers me even more with his refusal to pay back the reported over $110,000 he claimed to not live in his electorate of Melton.

Snippets Respect

He is reported as stating he did nothing wrong.

There have been media reports that this amount could be even higher but Daniel Andrews refuses to give an answer to the full extent of the rorting.

Daniel Andrews has insisted that the former Deputy Speaker resign from the Parliamentary Labor Party, but at the time of my writing this he has not demanded the former Speaker do the same.

Neither do we know if the $40,000 has been repaid.

These two men have brought irreparable damage to, and diminished the roles of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Given the absence of transparency from Daniel Andrews, the Opposition under leadership of Matthew Guy will now refer this matter to Victoria Police for investigation by the Fraud Squad.

Yarra Ranges Life TV has announced its content will soon feature on Channel 31 Melbourne and Geelong.

The digital initiative focuses on locally produced content from the Yarra Ranges, which will include local community news and sports from the Mail News Group.

Volunteers left on outer

By Peter Douglas Volunteers at the Upper Ferntree Gully Visitor Information Centre say they’re hurt and confused over the decision to close.

Yarra Ranges Tourism last week announced it would close the Upper Ferntree Gully and Healesville centres in June, following a detailed review of the ongoing viability of the centres.

Chief Executive Officer, Simon O’Callaghan, said the decision was based on data that showed significant decline in the number of visitor inquiries.

The Yarra Ranges Tourism board believes this is due to the increasing popularity of websites such as Airbnb. com.au and Booking.com.

But Upper Ferntree Gully volunteer Paula Vanderwerf says the decision shouldn’t be based on numbers, because their contribution to local business and tourism operators remains significant.

“Many who come here have trawled through the internet and can’t find what they want,” she said.

“We’re here, in person, to tell them about the best spots to visit.

“We tell them all the secret spots and the rich history behind them.

“This region is more than just the 1000 Steps.”

Ms Vanderwerf said many businesses and operators would suffer from the decision.

She said it was important to give tourists an unforgettable experience, because they would stay longer and want to return in future.

The volunteer of 17 years said the news came without consultation, and was a huge shock.

“We’re very passionate about helping the public, about informing the public before they head up to the hills,” she said.

“We provide enormous value to the region; it’s not all about data and dollars.

Meanwhile, Mr O’Callaghan told the ‘Mail’ he sympathised with the volunteers, but remained adamant the right decision was made.

“Yarra Ranges Tourism understands that some of our volunteers have been upset by our new direction,” he said.

“They have offered a fantastic, personalised service to visitors for many years, that has unfortunately seen a dramatic decline over recent times.

“Our position to transition this ser-

vice into new strategies to reach the visitor has been through a very long process of review.

“We carefully considered the feedback raised ongoing by the volunteer group through a variety of forums about the challenges the centre was facing.

“With the proliferation of visitors sourcing information online, as a notfor-profit, Yarra Ranges Tourism has to respond to this change to the best of our ability and limited resources, to best support regional tourism.”

By Peter Douglas The Hills Food Frontier has successfully launched its Ridge Schools and Community Good Food Report.

The initiative provides an account of a community mapping project of the Ridges area of the Dandenong Ranges, which includes the communities of Kallista, Ferny Creek, Sassafras, Olinda, Kalorama and Mount Dandenong.

The research project aims to support the work of the Hills Food Frontier, which wants the Dandenong Ranges to become

a sustainable food destination, one that inspires further such initiatives nationwide.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff delighted in launching the report in Sassafras on Saturday 18 March.

“I am so happy to see a local voluntary, grassroots organisation ... doing such valuable work,” he said.

Representatives from local schools, community gardens and good food businesses attended the launch.

They enjoyed a feast of local and organic good food, which was provided by Tricia and her

staff from The Deli Platter, and Provedore Cafe in Mount Dandenong.

Hills Food Frontier’s Shakti McLaren said the program was crucial for the region.

“We want to inspire, mobilise and equip the hills communities, so they can choose to grow, share and eat good food,” she said.

“In 2015, the Hills Food Frontier received funding from the Yarra Ranges Shire Community Grants, which is helping us achieve this vision.”

Heartbreak of big swim

By Peter Douglas Selby marathon swimmer Paul Hoffman’s bid to swim the equivalent of two English Channels has ended in heartbreak.

Just five hours into his swim, a 60-kilometre solo swim from Eastern Beech in Geelong to the Brighton Baths, Hoffman succumbed to a shoulder injury.

This swim had been the second attempt at the challenge for Hoffman, who, during last year’s try, tore a bicep tendon around the same mark as this bid.

That setback required an op-

eration, six months of physiotherapy and six months of training to get back to full fitness.

Before his latest attempt, Hoffman said he was eager to conquer the swim.

“This time it’s very personal,” he said.

“This is unfinished business for me.

“I don’t like leaving things unaccomplished.”

The experienced marathon swimmer had been aiming to raise $10,000 for the East Timor Hearts Fund, which would have been around 50 per cent of the

cost of heart surgery for a patient.

If Paul had been successful, it would have been only the second time anyone had swum from Geelong to Melbourne.

While it’s unknown if Hoffman will make a play for a third attempt, he is still encouraging people to donate to the charity.

Farrow questions process

By Peter Douglas Emerald volunteer and local resident Mary Farrow has questioned the process through which Cardinia Council received federal funding for the Hills Hub project.

Ms Farrow said before council sought federal funding, they had gained letters of support from the existing hall committee, who she said would not have given their support if they had known there was an intention

to demolish the building.

She says many in the committee continue to feel duped, after council put forward three design scenarios for the revamped Hills Hub project that included demolition of the original building.

“Once the support letters were received (from the existing hall committee), funding was approved from the Commonwealth, based on that support,” she said.

“Almost immediately, the council

spokesperson in charge began to sell the advantages of demolishing the hall.

“It was presented as the best option at our own community committee meeting specifically, over one year ago.”

Ms Farrow said the committee would never have supported demolition plans.

“If council had asked to demolish the hall at the beginning of the grant process, the hall committee would not have endorsed the plan and there

would be no project,” she said.

Last month, the project was publicly slated to go to tender before the end of this year, according to Cardinia Shire Council.

The council released the results from the Hills Hub survey in late September last year, with Scenario 4 gaining the most support with 98 votes.

Scenario 4 supports a ground floor hall in the new facility, as well as the demolition of the old hall.

But Ms Farrow said the process caused great concern among the hall committee.

“They were publicly blamed for being obstructive, and were demonised at an Emerald Township Committee meeting in early 2016, which I attended,” she said.

“Council’s community consultation then eventually presented four options for the future of the old hall ... three of which called for the demolition of the hall, thus stacking the odds.”

Lessons learnt from platypus Yarra Ranges students are learning more about the natural environment and Australia’s native wildlife, thanks to the Platypus Education Group.

The Education Group, which is funded through Yarra Ranges Council’s Community Development Grants, visited Gladysdale Primary School on Thursday 9 March.

Council’s Environmental Volunteers Support Officer, Jen Ellison, said the group worked with students in Grades 3-6, teaching them about the animal and its habits, and how human behaviour such as littering could affect it.

“We mostly focus on litter, specifically elastic bands and plastic rings, because they get discarded quite easily,” Ms Ellison said.

“They wash down the stormwater drains, into the creeks, and

they get entangled around platypus.

“So, they can strangle them or they can just get caught on their legs, which can lead to infection and death as well.”

The group uses games and photos in their events to help get the anti-littering message across.

Ms Ellison said the Education Group also asked students to collect as many elastic bands and plastic rings as possible over the month, cutting them to ensure they didn’t harm any wildlife.

Each of the 15 schools the group will visit this year will participate, and a poster will be made for the school that collects the most bands and rings.

PAVE the way to masquerade For the first time, this year’s PAVE Festival will feature a fabulous Venetian Style Masquerade Ball.

Inspired by the masquerade balls in Italy during the 15th century Renaissance, the ball provides an opportunity for all to indulge in costumed public festivities that were particularly popular in Venice.

People are invited to make or provide their own distinctive Venetian mask, or they can book to have one painted on before the ball’s commencement at Emerald Hall.

Attendees are asked to dress in their finest evening wear - whether contemporary, vintage or period - the masks will bring all the costumes together, as well as ensuring complete anonymity so that you can dance in as uninhibited a style as you wish.

Melbourne ska outfit, The Ska Vendors, will provide music for the night.

The band is no stranger to Emerald and has performed several memorable gigs in the past, both at the PAVE Festival and 3MDR’s legendary Big Gig. They are a consummate dance band and guaranteed to have people up and grooving.

The Ska Vendors have toured both internationally and its members are also members of the world-renowned Melbourne Ska Orchestra, which took out the best world music album at last year’s ARIA awards.

A day for fun and Games Ringwood will resound to the skirl of the pipes, and the swing of the kilts, as 20 pipe bands march onto the oval at the East Ringwood Sports Ground on Sunday 26 March for the 51st Ringwood Highland Games.

From 9.30am, there will be activities on both ovals to enjoy - something for all ages to participate in.

A big attraction is the Dogs Flyball competition on the lower oval.

Teams of dogs come from all over the state to participate in the relay event, with lots of dogs, large and small, many of which are border collies.

Both dogs and owners are very enthusiastic!

Around the ground are more than 20 Scottish clans and societies tents, displaying clan history and genealogy.

Have a look for your clan.

There are two highland dancing contests taking place all day, and displays of Scottish Martial Arts.

Also, swordplay.

Lessons are available, learning the techniques of using swords.

Family fun activities include haggis hurling and ‘Welly’ boot throwing.

By Peter Douglas The picturesque landscapes of the Dandenong Ranges feature heavily in the debut novel of Olinda author Roger Mendelson.

After two successful non-fiction books, the long-time hills resident and successful businessman has ventured into the realm of fiction, releasing ‘Eliyahu’s Mistress’.

So what makes a successful businessman write an engrossing love story?

Mendelson told the ‘Mail’ he felt like a novel was always within him.

Also, that, after writing countless legal documents, in addition to two non-fiction books, the journey into fiction had been liberating.

“I’ve always enjoyed the process of writing,” he said.

“Some people paint, some sing, some are good at golf ... I don’t have any of those skills - I like to write,” he said.

“At first, I didn’t write with the intention of anyone reading it - I really wrote what was within me.

“I’m not going to please everyone ... but I’m really happy with how it’s turned out.”

Mr Mendelson said his love of the hills and its communities not only shone through in the book, but was essential to the story.

“I always wanted it to be based around the hills - but without the hills setting, it wouldn’t have worked,” he said.

“It’s very much a hills' story for the hills' people, who will be able to relate to this story.”

Styled like Apocalypse Now with a giant ape, Kong: Skull Island is a blockbuster film of impressive depth and efficiency.

Through only a few moments of natural, confident performance, you instantly feel acquainted with the characters. The pacing is quick and steady, presenting clear objectives and threats without the information being spoon-fed to us, and the film’s tone is grim and perilous - much like Kong himself - but still maintains a sense of primordial grandeur and mystery.

The stand-out actors are Brie Larson (as an assertive photographer), John C. Reilly and Samuel L. Jackson. Reilly, as a wacky US fighter pilot stranded on the island since 1944, is the ostensible comic relief, but is still allowed many poignantly touching and badass warrior moments, and Jackson is a deeply compelling antagonist as Lieutenant-Colonel Packard, a military man with a personal vendetta against Kong.

While 2014’s Godzilla was tense and engaging, many fans justifiably complained about the title monster’s very limited screentime. There’s no such problem here: Kong is a prominent and terrifying presence, driving several incredibly powerful, gut-wrenching action scenes.

Kong: Skull Island is a monster movie of rare intelligence and character complexity.

Road Management Act 2004 Road Management Plan Review Yarra Ranges Council proposes to conduct a review of its Road Management Plan in accordance with Section 54(5) of the Road Management Act 2004.

The purpose of the review, consistent with the role, functions and responsibilities of Yarra Ranges Council as a Road Authority under the Act, is to ensure that the standards in relation to, and the priorities to be given to, the inspection, maintenance and repair of the roads and the classes of road to which the Yarra Ranges Council’s Road Management Plan applies are appropriate.

Friends and family recently united to celebrate the life of Tecoma’s Wyn Gibson, who passed away on 25 February 2017, aged 88.

Wyn has been described as a wonderful mum, an amazing nan, and the most loyal and loving friend anyone could wish for.

Winifred (Wyn) Mary Gibson was born at the Dromana Bush Nursing Hospital on 1 May, 1928.

Wyn was the daughter of Arthur and Agnes, and a sibling for Joan and Roger.

She went to school in Red Hill and Red Hill South and rode her pony, Nancy, four miles to get to school each day.

In 1938, the government decided to build a small hall in Merricks North (there were many euchre card nights and get-togethers to raise money for the building).

She attended there, with between 16 to 24 pupils attending and one teacher to cover all grades.

Wyn’s father died when she was just six, so her mother had to struggle to keep the family together.

The family owned some land, but were unable to work it to its potential.

Her mother milked three or four cows, sold butter to neighbours and sent cream to the factory.

She also kept chooks for their eggs, as well as worked as a fruit-picker for neighbours.

Wyn told family she never recalled being unhappy, though.

“I had quite a good childhood,” she said.

After leaving school, World War II was declared.

There was a shortage of men, so women and girls worked on orchards in the Land Army.

Wyn got a job on the orchard next door, where she eventually meet Ray Gibson, whom she married in 1951.

They then moved to Tecoma, where they bought a fruit shop.

They had four children: Lesley in 1952, Michael in 1953, Brian in 1957 and Allan in 1959.

The Gibson family were heavily involved in the Tecoma community, both as business owners and with their children attending the Tecoma State School.

Later, they attended Ferntree Gully Tech with Lesley attending the Upwey High School.

Over the years, the family enjoyed holidays, including a trip to Adelaide in an old Morris commercial truck.

The family also holidayed at Dromana, camping on the foreshore or renting a holiday house and having a ball.

Wyn would stay down with the children, while Ray would go back to work in the shop during the week, returning on the weekend.

Family life was enjoyable.

Ray and Wyn eventually enjoyed the company of 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

These children were cherished, spoiled and delighted in.

Wyn was farewelled on Monday 6 March at Le Pine Funerals in Ferntree Gully.

Fifth premiership victor y

By Ian Harley FTGDCA Knoxfield Knights have won back-toback Norm Reeves Shields, their fifth premiership in the FTGDCA, in convincing style against the Upper Ferntree Gully Kings.

After winning the toss, Knoxfield skipper Tom Boxell elected to bat in front of a large home crowd, with openers Adith Sundaresh and Ben Gerloff batting cautiously against a strong Kings attack.

When both openers were in the sheds with the score on 33, the Kings were on top.

The departures of the experienced Trent Scholfield and gun batsman Jack Taylor saw the Knights slump to 4/68 in the 33rd over, which brought Matthew Train to the crease with skipper Boxell, who was digging in for the day.

The pair combined to add a matchwinning 194 runs for the fifth wicket until Richmond premiership player, Boxell, was caught for a majestic 108 in the second last over of the day.

Train remained unbeaten on 84 and was equally as impressive as his captain.

Evergreen Jay Colee bowled valiantly to claim 2/87 from 26 overs.

Ironically, it was Boxell and Train who were the catalysts in last season’s premiership after top scoring in the final against The Basin.

Upper Gully’s run chase started positively with Peter Dunlop and Jay Windross moving the score to 32 before Dunlop was run out.

Then the remainder of the day belonged to Knoxfield as the Kings lost wickets steadily to be bundled out after tea for just 114.

Only Dunlop and Windross (49) reached double figures.

Left-armer Trent Evans claimed 4/28 for the Knights; however, it was Boxell who was awarded the Stephen Lee Medal for man of the match.

Evans was undoubtably the player of the finals after taking 5/10 in the qualifying final, also against the Kings.

Upper Gully captain Peter Dunlop praised his team for reaching the

final after being promoted from Decoite Shield, while Boxell was elated that the Knights were victorious once again, having lost only one match during the season.

Decoite Shield Johnson Park has overcome Lysterfield in an epic DeCoite Shield final to win their way back into Norm Reeves Shield.

The game was decided in the last over of the day as Lysterfield fell a devastating 15 runs short.

Only nine runs separated the two sides when they last met at the same venue.

Opener Daniel Forster-Jennings was the ninth wicket to fall being dismissed for a well-compiled 108 in the 79th over.

He combined with Nathan Hicks (24) to get the Beavers off to a flyer with the partnership yielding 55 runs of the first 15 overs.

It was the introduction of Steve Devenish (3/68 off 29) in the 20th over in conjunction with Ben Stallworthy (3/64 off 19) and Adam Clark (2/30 off

13) that saw the Beavers restricted to 41 runs in the next 26 overs.

Looking to accelerate after tea Lysterfield lost two wickets for seven runs, including the vital wicket of Nathan Walsh.

A number of small partnerships got the Beavers to 7/173 in the 73rd over before lusty hitting from Adam Kinniburgh (27) almost got them back in the game.

Requiring 25 off the last three overs, with two wickets in hand, Johnson Park turned the screws to take the flag.

It was Steve Devenish’s combined efforts in the game that won him the Ken Utting Medal.

Day One saw Andrew Devenish made the right call at the toss and Johnson Park sent Lysterfield out to field.

At 84 without loss, the Sharks were in a strong position with Ben Stallworthy (37) and Steve Devenish (44) doing their job.

Nathan Walsh brought himself on and had both openers back in the pavilion, and when Andrew Devenish de-

parted, the Sharks had lost three wickets for the addition of nine runs and were suddenly on the back foot.

Lysterfield toiled away after tea to have Bryn Gaunt and Tyson Barrington back in the shed with the score on 5/135.

Liyan DeSilva (53 not out) then joined David Devenish (44) adding 90 runs in 20 overs to ensure Johnson Park set a winning total of 7/238.

Mount Evelyn gallant in defeat in Shield match

By Chris Anderson Despite a gallant performance, Mount Evelyn has been trumped by a talentladen Warburton-Millgrove team in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association’s top grade, the DJ Strachan Shield.

Mount Evelyn won the toss on Saturday and didn’t hesitate in batting in brilliant conditions.

After a positive start, the Mounters lost a glut of wickets when Burras captain Daniel Lever entered the attack.

When brother David disturbed Daniel Fraser’s furniture, Mount Evelyn had slumped to be 4/61.

From there, it was a battle of will between the Burras’ trio of bowlers - Michael Walker (2/54), David Lever (4/71) and Daniel Lever (3/73) against the explosive power of Mount Evelyn captain Kane Jones.

Jones found some handy allies in brother Luke and Jesse Fraser, and a pair of handy partnerships grew.

This not only resurrected the innings, but put it in a position to attack a healthy total.

Jones was brilliant in his attack on the Warburton-Millgrove bowlers, showing enough respect for the good balls, riding his luck at times, and brutally attacking anything loose.

Unfortunately for Jones and his team, he fell short of a well-deserved century losing his wicket to Walker on 91, and fell within sight of a dash to the finish-line.

Some lusty blows from the Mounters’ tail was accompanied by regular wickets to David Lever, and the innings was closed nine overs short of stumps with the score on 201.

Entering day two, the game was well and truly in the balance.

The total of 201 was more than competitive, but by no means insurmountable.

The Mounters raced out of the blocks on day two, and Jones’ day one innings didn’t seem to slow him down as he shot his team off to the perfect

start, with a couple of wickets, he had had reduced the Burras to 3/10.

Jones was in irresistible form with the ball, and a couple of missed chances could have well had the Burras further in trouble.

The required some resistance of the highest quality, and this emerged through the union between Liam Barnard and a Tim McKail.

The pair survived some nervous moments early on, and the longer they stayed at the wicket, the more comfortable they became.

Barnard cautious defence was well matched by some lusty strikes from the blade of McKail.

The pair managed to firstly negate the energy the fielding team had gained from the early wickets, then they proceeded to safely guide their team to the tea interval.

In the process, they slowly raised the scoring rate.

With the game in the balance, Mount Evelyn were desperate for the breakthrough, but Barnard and McKail would not be deterred in their quest to see their team home.

McKail registered a magnificent maiden A Grade century as he just beat down the Mount Evelyn bowlers and fielders as they had no answer to his brilliance.

Mount Evelyn were able to get some joy in the run home as spinner Jed Thompson lured Barnard out of his crease and Jesse Fraser completed a neat stumping with Barnard falling for 49.

With the fourth wicket falling at 162, after a magnificent 152-run partnership, the door was still ajar for the Mounters to strike, but they had spent all their petrol tickets.

McKail, and club legend Mick Walker, were then left to fittingly see their team home to a memorable victory with 10 overs to spare.

The win confirmed WarburtonMillgrove’s status as the best team in the competition this season.

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Another season of fun and friendship at Yarra Ranges Athletics finished on Saturday with a great morning of little athletics.

They celebrated the achievements of the Under 15s athletes who finished their little athletics careers and hopefully move into senior team ranks where they will undoubtedly continue to flourish.

Congratulations and best wishes to the Under 15s class of 2017: Jayden Clarke, Harrison Van Duuren, Oliver Duncan, Alec Peterson, Pat Keating, Zane Wheeler, Ella Strudley, Sam DiGregorio and Chelsea Thompson.

MONBULK CRICKET The Monbulk Under 12s topped off a great finish to the season for the Hawks, winning the premiership on Friday night after their fourth XI won the premiership last weekend.

Congratulations to coaches Thomas Badgery and Simon Davis, team manager Steve McDonald and all the players for becoming Under 12s premiers in season 2016/17.

They narrowly defeated Ferntree Gully in the semi-final but this had nothing on the grand final.

The Under 12s defeated a strong UpweyTecoma team in the grand final in what was one of the most exciting matches for all present.

Halfway through the split innings match, Monbulk were 3/71 - slightly behind Upwey-Tecoma on 4/80.

Batting first on the second night, Upwey-Tecoma made it to 9/139 from their 40 overs.

Monbulk’s fielding was a real highlight, saving many runs in the field.

All the boys and girls bowled well with Camden McLean and Alex McDonald both taking two wickets.

Needing 69 runs to win, Monbulk chipped away at the total.

Some great saves in the field by Upwey meant Monbulk, nine out, needed one run to win off the last ball.

The ball went through to the keeper, and Olivia and Isaac managed to scramble through for a single to win a dramatic grand final in front of a huge crowd at Monbulk.
