Criminals warned Tackling crime is a shared responsibility.

This was the big message to come from the Keysborough South Crime Forum, attended by about 70 people at the South Eastern Masonic Centre in Keysborough on Thursday 16 March.

Somerfield resident Damien Stanyer instigated the forum in response to fears that crime was spiralling out of control in the Keysborough South housing estate.

“Criminals need to know that there’s an active community watching them,” he said.

“It’s not just about police doing their job it’s just about everybody going their job.

“It is a shared responsibility for everybody.

“Residents are doing more. They’re increasing their security measures.

“If everybody comes to the party and is on the same page, there’s no reason why this suburb can’t be a model.”

Mr Stanyer suggested that the State Government could provide a rebate for private CCTV systems in the same way as it does for solar panels.

Greater Dandenong Council’s senior community development co-ordinator Sharon Sykes said: “We don’t solve crime but we work very closely with Victoria Police to support them and try to prevent crime before it begins.”

Mayor Jim Memeti said: “I have heard you today” regarding requests for CCTV monitoring at Somerfield’s entry and exit points.

some crimes because they felt police wouldn’t do anything with the information.

“We have to know about it to be able to deal with it,” he said.

“I need to know where to put police.”

One woman asked how she should report hooning because she felt it wasn’t serious enough to warrant an emergency call.

“Call triple zero,” Insp Langhorn said.

“If it’s happening there and then and it’s going on, we will try to get an available unit out to it.”

He said his team had targeted hoons in recent months and would continue to do so.

He encouraged residents to provide registration numbers because police could target a vehicle owner if they received multiple reports.

“I will be putting a bid in to the council to see how much it would cost,” he said.

Cr Memeti said the council would also talk with the estate’s developer, Intrapac, about what role it could play in improving security and perceptions of safety.

Keysborough MP and Attorney-General Martin Pakula vowed to do the same.

He also assured residents that he’d heard their plea for additional police resources.

Mr Pakula said thousands of new police were being trained and would be deployed this year.

“A substantial number of those police will be in the south-eastern suburbs,” he said.

Parking meters’ time up

By Casey Neill Springvale’s unpopular parking meters have officially got the boot.

But traders and shoppers are warned that time restrictions on CBD parking will remain in place and enforceable.

Councillor Sean O’Reilly tried unsuccessfully to move a compromise at the Tuesday 14 March City of Greater Dandenong council meeting.

“Rather than an unsophisticated junking of several hundred thousand dollars’ worth of parking meters, here’s a more sophisticated solution,” he said.

He suggested immediately dropping parking meter rates to 50 cents per hour and increasing trader engagement.

Cr O’Reilly said removing the meters would take Springvale to a dead end.

A council officers’ report to the 27 February meeting recommended keeping the meters and said they had improved parking and traffic since

their introduction in November 2015.

But Cr Youhorn Chea instead successfully moved to unconditionally abolish the pay and display parking fee system following complaints from residents and businesses.

Cr O’Reilly filed a motion to rescind the decision, so councillors again debated the issue on 14 March.

But they stuck by the February result, seven votes to four, and Cr O’Reilly’s compromise didn’t get a look in.

A packed gallery applauded the councillors who spoke against the meters and booed those who supported their retention.

“I don’t want to go back to 2015, I don’t want to go back to the issues of parking turnover, of cars going around and around the activity centre of Springvale,” Cr Matthew Kirwan said.

He said the population had increased so the problem would now be worse.

“And they’ll continue to get worse,” he said.

After the meeting, Cr Kirwan said that emo-

tion and vested interests won over logic and the broader public interest.

He said that adjusting parking meters to only operate during peak times would have made more sense than removing them.

“People will still get fined except now it will be for overstaying time limits and not able to be blamed on parking meters,” he said.

Cr Youhorn Chea, the meters’ biggest opponent, told the meeting that small businesses had suffered.

“You need to listen to the small business people and to the residents as well,” he said.

He said parking was free in neighbouring shopping precincts, like Glen Waverley and Clayton.

“People go shopping there instead,” he said.

Cr Roz Blades said: “Huge amounts of people worked long and hard to make Springvale what it is today.

“If people continue to stay away from Springvale, the customers will not return,” she said.

“We don’t have a house, so we would like to buy our first one. It’s absolutely fantastic.

“We’ve got quite a few family members who we’d like to help, too.”

Dandenong Plaza Lotto owner George Zheng said he felt like his store was very lucky.

“Particularly since these winners travelled a long way and happened to get the winning QuickPick numbers here,” he said.

“We wish them all the very best with their $1 million windfall! Not long ago in February we sold three division one winning shares in a group syndicate worth more than $37,000 each. So fingers crossed we can deliver division one again soon.”

Boxter goes for burn-out A Porsche Boxster went from burn-outs to burnt out in Dandenong South. A passer-by spotted the silver car engulfed in flames on Glasscocks Road about 1am on Saturday 11 March.

The CFA attended and extinguished the fire.

Police said the car had front-end damage so it might have been involved a collision prior to being torched. It was spotted performing burnouts just prior to the fire, police said.

Dandenong’s She exhibition has a fresh focus this year.

Organisers of the annual Walker Street Gallery showcase for female artists scoured art school graduate exhibitions late last year.

They selected four women with potential and encouraged them to make the leap into the professional world.

They selected a fifth artist to take part in the exhibition from a call out for proposals from artists who’d entered She over the past two years.

The exhibition opened on Tuesday 14 March and will continue until Saturday 22 April.

8 March 1917 Saturday half-holiday opposed At a meeting of the Cranbourne Shire Council on Saturday, Mrs E A Forest of Clyde applied for the council’s consent to an alteration of the weekly half-holiday on Wednesday to Saturday afternoon, at the local post office.

Cr Hardy moved that the request be granted, as had been done in other centres in the shire.

Cr Callanan opposed the application, as it meant considerable inconvenience to people in the shire.

He suggested that the motion be withdrawn and he would move that the Postmaster General be written to, requesting that all post offices within the shire be kept open on all weekdays in future.

Cr Wilson said that it might appear hard for the officers not to have a half-holiday on Saturday.

9 March 1967 New phone dialling to affect 22,000 Massive campaign to ‘kill’ four prefix The Post Master General’s Department has launched a massive re-education program for telephone subscribers in the Dandenong exchange area.

Letter cards, public telephone booth posters and new directories have been distributed to warn subscribers NOT to dial a four prefix when ringing the metropolitan area.

From 1am on Sunday, local subscribers will be incorporated as part of the metropolitan telephone network and the use of four as a prefix will no longer be necessary.

Anyone who dials a four prefix after 1am on Sunday will be connected to a wrong number.

10 March 1997 Back to the ballot The City of Greater Dandenong goes to the polls on Saturday for the first time in two years. The council elections will see the end of the commissioners for Dandenong and Springvale.

5 March 2012 Council bollard plan hits bump in road Greater Dandenong councillor Angela Long has blocked a contentious council move to close part of Herbert Street during school hours.

The bollards are designed to protect students crossing the street between Dandenong High School’s neighbouring campuses.

However, 794 of 950 surveyed residents opposed the street’s closure.

After the council meeting, Cr Long submitted a rescission motion to defer a vote on the matter until the next meeting on 15 March.

Cr Long said residents would lose direct access to Princes Highway via Herbert Street if the street was closed.

The council’s preferred option had been traffic lights, but the education department had refused to fund them as it found bollards were safer.

Seaman was a major landholder What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names. This week the Journal looks at Ross Street, which runs parallel to Stud Road in Dandenong and was named after Captain David Ross.

Captain David Ross was from Ross-shire in Scotland and for many years in the early 1850s traded with a fleet of ships between England, the United States of America, China, New Zealand and Australia.

The Dandenong and District Historical Society said he named one of his vessels after his first wife Maria Ross and also sailed the Chelsea and the Commodore.

Captain Ross was one of the first ship masters to enter Port Phillip bay and was said to be highly respected by his seafaring brethren.

He bought The Grange property in Dande-

The property was 1000 acres and was bounded

by Melbourne, Gladstone, Heatherton, and Kidds roads.

While Captain Ross owned the land, he leased the property after purchase to Dr Bathe who combined breeding thoroughbred horses with cattleraising.

There were no roads through the property in those days and traffic to Ferntree Gully went across it by favour of Captain Ross, who eventu-

ally granted a permanent right of way and thus created Stud Road.

He died at the age of 46 on 2 April 1869.

On 13 January 1892 there was an executor’s sale of his estate in the form of acreage business and villa sites.

Frontages were offered on Dandenong Road, Clow Street and Stud Road, with blocks varying from three acres to 30 acres with frontages to the Dandenong Creek.

Buyers were scarce when the subdivisional auction was held of 28 blocks of four to 10 acres in the old Grange Estate.

The land was described as “right on the edge of the prosperous and thriving township of Dandenong, only five minutes from the Town Hall and 10 minutes from the station”.

UFO witness to tell story

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A school-girl’s sketchy line-drawing remains the first image from one of Australia’s most famous UFO events.

Fourteen-year-old Marilyn Eastwood sketched what she saw of the Westall UFO incident on 6 April 1966, which remains one of the few daytime UFO sightings by scores of witnesses.

It was seen by about 150 students and teachers at Westall High School, including Marilyn - now with the surname Smith.

On reflection, Ms Smith feels privileged to have seen the event. It girded her belief that there’s life “out there”.

“When you’re young and when you see these things, you think was it real? Did I see it?

“But there were hundreds of children that saw it.

“When the day comes, when aliens come and land on Earth, I’d say: ‘See, I told you’.”

At the time, she sketched what she saw for the Dandenong Journal - the only newspaper that reported on the event at the time.

The object was “round, with a hump on top and round things underneath,” she told the newspaper.

The Journal wrote: “Her sketch closely resembles sketches and photographs of other unidentified flying objects reported from many parts of the world.”

She remembers the Journal interviewing her as well as Westall High School teacher Andrew Greenwood - despite the school slapping a mediaban on students and staff.

“They asked if I’d do a drawing. I don’t remember how the Journal got in touch with me,” Ms Smith said.

Ms Smith will share her story along with other witnesses at a 51st anniversary event - Westall: The Witnesses Speak.

People are fascinated when she tells them about the fast-moving silver object that flew over the school and disappeared behind pine trees in The Grange Reserve.

She and many witnesses adamantly refute the official explanation that it was a weather balloon.

It still seemingly defies rationalisation.

According to Victorian UFO Action director Ben Hurle, it’s the event that “refuses to go away”.

“This is a special event that challenges our belief systems.”

Mr Hurle said the witnesses’ testimonies were “raw expressions of encounters with the unknown” that defied attempts to “cover-up” the event.

Witnesses had been intimidated and silenced for many years about the “significant” encounter, he said.

Their reputations were threatened, property confiscated and evidence destroyed.

“Unknown flying objects - without authorisation ... or regard for air space regulations compromised safety and, fortunately, no harm was done.

“Who or what were they?”

Ms Smith’s recollection was that the object hovered and moved erratically - “up and down, across the sky”.

Not so clean theft getaway Police are hunting for a burglar who broke in to a Keysborough car wash.

Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are appealing for public help to identify the man involved.

They allege he broke into the Cheltenham Road car wash’s office area, about 11.10am on Sunday 5 March, rummaged through doors and cabinets and stole cash.

Investigators have released an image of a man that they believe might be able to assist with their inquiries.

Show gets a cash boost The Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society has received a $5708 boost.

The State Government awarded the cash through its Agricultural and Pastoral Grants Program.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the funding on Friday 10 March. She said the society would use it to widen and lengthen the existing earth animal loading ramp used at the annual Dandenong Show and other events throughout the year.

Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford said shows like Dandenong’s promoted agricultural production and gave farmers a chance to share knowledge among themselves and with the community.

“Field days are a great day out with the family, bringing local communities together,” she said.

It caused other students to go a “little bit ballistic”.

“We thought it was the end of the world, that we were about to be invaded,” she said.

“It was terrifying. We were hysterical, crying and screaming.”

They were still “hysterical” when a Channel 9 reporter interviewed her at the school that afternoon.

“We were told not to have anything to do with the TV and the media.

“The headmaster was ropeable.”

Neither footage of that interview or another TV interview she did with psychic Kevin Annett in the mid-1970s can be found.

It makes Ms Smith think there was a possible cover-up by authorities.

Court after bikie arrests

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Several people are due to appear in court today (20 March) after a series of anti-bikie raids in Dandenong South, Eumemmerring, Lyndhurst and across Melbourne’s south-east.

Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana said a “very senior� Comancheros member was arrested at a house at Lyndhurst where at least two vehicles were seized during the 14 March raids.

The 35-year-old was charged with 15 offences including trafficking a large commercial quantity of meth, inciting another to intentionally cause injury and recklessly endanger life, conspiracy to commit criminal damage by fire, possessing an unregistered handgun and traffic offences.

Among others arrested were a 29-year-old Dandenong South man and a 27-year-old Narre Warren South man who were charged with drugs, firearms offences and conspiracy to engage in reckless conduct endangering life. They were remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.

Mr Fontana said that some of those arrested

would be charged over a firebombing of a Rebels clubhouse in Dandenong in October.

Twenty-five homes, a business and a factory were raided in suburbs across Melbourne, including Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Cranbourne North, Cranbourne West, Dandenong South, Beaconsfield, Keysborough, Clyde North, Lysterfield South and Eumemmerring.

Investigators said they seized vehicles, a firearm, jewellery, cash and several types of drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, GHB, cannabis, ecstasy and steroids.

A 31-year-old Cranbourne North man was charged with offences including aggravated burglary, criminal damage by fire, kidnapping, two counts of motor theft and five counts of breaching bail.

Six people from Tyabb, Berwick, Beaconsfield, Cranbourne West, Cranbourne and Clyde North were bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 20 March on a variety of drug and firearms offences.

According to Victoria Police, four others were bailed and three were expected to be charged on summons.

Three of the 22 people arrested were released without charge.

Police, including officers from Echo Taskforce and the Australian Federal Police anti-gang unit had investigated a Comancheros and Rebels bikie gang feud which included the Kittens fire-bombing as well as 20 non-fatal drive-by shootings, Mr Fontana said.

During their investigations, police had also “effectively disrupted� other fire-bombings and drive-by shootings. “It’s not uncommon for these groups to be fighting over territory and illicit activity,� he said.

About 300 state and federal police were involved in the latest raids. “We are not intimidated by OMCGs and we will not allow our communities to be,� Mr Fontana said. “We know these groups have long histories of engaging in warfare amongst themselves, however the indiscriminate nature of their attacks including drive-by shootings means there is immense potential to endanger innocent members of the public.�

Greater Dandenong Council sought advice and approval about treatments that would be appropriate for the facade.

The Lonsdale and Walker street building originally opened in 1890 as the Dandenong Town Hall.

It opened as a performing arts theatre in 2006.

The new lighting kicked into action on 4 February following a trial from 1 January and can be changed to different colours to reflect community events, such as pink for breast cancer awareness.

City is again crime central

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong has again ranked in the state’s top five crime hot spots.

The Crime Statistics Agency released figures for the year ending 31 December on Thursday 16 March.

Greater Dandenong came in fifth - after Melbourne, Latrobe, Yarra and Horsham - for the highest offence rate per 100,000 residents, with 13,332.

This figure was up 3.4 per cent, but rose 8.1 per cent across the state.

Offences in the police service area (PSA) rose by 5.6 per cent from 19,689 to 20,787.

But the state rise was 10.2 per cent, and Greater Dandenong Inspector Mark Langhorn told the Keysborough South Crime Forum on Thursday 16 March that “crime stats for Greater Dandenong in general are on the improve�.

He said family violence featured prominently in the statistics and crime “on the streets� was actually reducing.

Insp Langhorn said police were proactively tackling crime through initiatives such as Coffee with a Cop at Parkmore Shopping Centre, the drug-focused Divisional Tasking Unit and the Frontline Tactical Unit. “They’re not responding to triple zero,� he said, “they’re looking for problems.�

Assault figures for the PSA were up 19.6 per cent for the 12 months to 31 December last year when compared to the previous year. The state increase was 11.8 per cent.

Robbery in Greater Dandenong was up 27.7 per cent, in line with the state’s 24.4 per cent jump.

The burglary/break and enter increase was 26.4 per cent, more than double Victoria’s 10.1 per cent rise.

Dangerous and negligent acts endangering people increased by 62.9 per cent in Greater Dandenong, from 170 offences to 277. The state rate also jumped, by 22.3 per cent.

A design, pictured above, for a new Dandenong Ambulance Station has emerged.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams shared the image online on Thursday 16 March.

The Journal announced in August 2015 that the station would receive an overhaul.

It’s one of the state’s busiest stations but facilities are “inadequate for a modern ambulance service”.

The new facility, on the same site, is forecast to be fully operational next year.

The Wallara Weapon made an unconventional entry into the Yarra at the Moomba Birdman Rally.

The occasion overwhelmed pilot Stacey Edwards and vision from the Sunday 12 March event shows her sending the aircraft into the drink from the four-metre platform.

She was the competition’s first entrant with Down syndrome and the Wallara crew was proud of her efforts, their winged creation and raising funds for the disability service.

Greater Dandenong Community Hall of Fame inductee Vajira Ekanayake has died.

Mayor Jim Memeti said at the Tuesday 14 March council meeting that he’d attended a memorial service for the community stalwart.

He was unwell in hospital and unable to

accept his award in person at January’s Australia Day Festival in Dandenong Park.

He was known for organising Christmas carols for Monash Medical Centre patients, championing the Red Cross and organising medical seminars.

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan and his wife Jennie are expecting twin girls in August.

His fellow councillors proudly spread the news following the Tuesday 14 March meeting.

Cr Kirwan said he was “excited but slightly daunted as well!”

The annual SEBN Take a Swing for Charity Golf Day in February raised about $50,000 for the Mirabel Foundation.

The organisation looks after about 1500 children who have been abandoned or orphaned by their parents.

Farm World marks half a century This year marks the 50th anniversary of Farm World at Lardner Park and Victoria’s premier agricultural event is striding into the future with a strong list of more than 900 exhibitors from Thursday 30 March until Sunday 2 April.

People of all ages and backgrounds came together at the Holi Mela festival on Sunday 12 March.

The Hindu event signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere and a chance to repair ruptured relationships.

Holi participants colour each other with dry powder in an act designed to equalise rich and poor, men and women and all ages.

SPORT Superstar Spoljaric after a fifth ALAN WOOKEY MEDAL PREVIEW Star News Journalist NICK CREELY has tipped Cranbourne legend Steven Spoljaric to win his fifth Wookey Medal on Wednesday 22 March at the presentation evening.

After winning his maiden Wookey at Parkfield in 2010/11, Spoljaric won a further two at the Bears before winning his first with the Eagles in 2014/15.

The voting procedure is a 3,2,1 at the conclusion of each Turf 1 match, and does not include Twenty20 cricket.

In what was another extraordinary individual season for the Eagles skipper, Spoljaric scored 681 runs at an average of 85.1 as well as taking 25 wickets at an average of 18.4.

Spoljaric received the maximum three votes on four occasions - in Round 3 he scored 153 and took 2/53, in Round 4 he made 158 and took 3/28, in Round 5 he scored 34 and took 5/19 and 3/39, and finally in Round 10 he scored 123 and took 1/57.

On a statistical point-of-view it is perhaps his finest season, topping the runs aggregate while also entrenching himself in the top-five for wickets too.

In close second was Mordialloc’s Ian Daniel, who enjoyed another stellar all-round season.

Scoring 438 runs at a tick under 40, Daniel also took 25 wickets at an incredible average of 12.0.

Tied with Daniel is Berwick fast-bowler Jarrod Armitage. In his first season at the Cave, Armitage exceeded expectations as a batsman, scoring two centuries and 395 runs, but it was with the ball that he shone, taking 27 wickets for the season.

Although the Bears eventually missed out on qualifying for the Turf 1 finals, Armitage was a dominant force all season.

By Nicholas Creely TAC CUP ROUND 1 PREVIEW DANDENONG STINGRAYS v GIPPSLAND POWER 25 MARCH, 1pm Morwell Recreation Reserve It’s time to put the cricket whites on the rack for another year and dust off the football boots because footy is finally back with the TAC Cup beginning in just six days’ time.

And it all begins with a battle between two of the competition’s most bitter rivals - the Stingrays and the Power.

It’s been a slightly unconventional pre-season for the Rays who have been utilizing the elite facilities down at Frankston VFL ground rather than their spiritual home at Shepley Oval.

Both sides have completed equally gruelling pre-season campaigns and both are primed to bounce back from disappointing 2016 campaigns.

Last year the Rays were head-and-shoulders above the rest of the competition, finishing topof-the-ladder before falling away in straight-set defeats, while the Power finished ninth in what was a season marred by inconsistency.

LAST TIME THEY MET: In Round 10 last year, the Stingrays overcame a slow first-quarter to overrun the Power by 8 points at Shepley Oval. With scores level at 46-46 at three-quarter time, the Rays kicked away in the final term to register yet another win.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: There are plenty of talented youngsters on offer from the Rays, but Tom De Koning is going to be an excitement machine throughout 2017.

Already talked up as potentially the best keyforward in the draft pool, he will be keen to get his season off to a strong start.

Others such as Oscar Clavarino and Hunter Clark are ones to watch and integral to the makeup of the side.

For the Power, their 19-year-old overage star Sean Masterson will be a key player and one that can light it up.

After an exciting 2016 season, the talented forward is back in the fold and ready to prove a point.

The Rowville Football Club has named a new skipper for the 2017 season with Alex Frawley named as the new leader.

The dual Mynott medallist and club legend forms part of a new-look leadership group with emerging ruckman Mitch Garner and the reigning 2016 Chandler medallist Cameron Manual appointed as joint vice-captains.

To round out the Hawks’ leadership group are key defender Daniel Zajac, Luke Daidone and former VFL jet James Wilsen.

It’s already been a hectic off-season down at Seebeck Oval as they chase a maiden Division 1 premiership in the Eastern Football League.

The club has already announced that it has re-signed Mat Suckling, originally from Norwood in the SANFL, as well a plethora of former VFL players - seven in fact - with Michael Sikora, James Wilsen, Jake Dermott, Jordan Bastinac, Jake Kidd, Jackson Anderson and Jayden Cyster joining the powerful club.

In the Journal’s other local EFL side, Noble Park is having a solid pre-season as it gears up to go one step further in 2017.

It has added Brenton Wells from Narre Warren, Ryan O’Dell from Mornington, as well as the higher profile recruits Hudson Thomas from the Frankston Dolphins and James Gwilt from the AFL. And in the Southern Football League, Keysborough is gearing up for a big season as the expectations continue to rise at Keysborough Reserve.

Early last week, the club announced that TAC Cup star and Sandringham Dragon Jacob Bakes had nominated it as his senior club for 2017.

A highly touted youngster, it is definitely a coup for the club.

Stingrays set for a long wait to see their Darling

By Nick Creely A strong mindset is just as important for a footballer as having an elite set of skills - Aaron Darling has both in spades.

But for the 18-year-old draft prospect from the Crib Point Football Club, an unfortunate training accident has resulted in him having to face up to the likelihood he won’t play any football in 2017 a bitter pill to swallow.

The Dandenong Stingrays product and AFL Academy member, who played 16-games last season as a bottom-ager in the TAC Cup, cruelly tore his ACL while doing a routine drill at training while with the Rays late last year.

He showed some exciting traits in his 2016 campaign, with his performance against Gippsland Power last year, in which he used his class to gather 21 disposals, highly impressive.

Prodigiously talented as a small-forward, Darling is seen as one of the country’s brightest prospects, but understands there is still a significantly long road ahead for him to be even back on the park doing what he does best.

“The knee’s getting there, it’s obviously a pretty long process, but it’s doing well - I’m just working on getting some strength and stability back into the leg before I start running again,” he told the Journal.

“I’ve got to give the graft in my knee a full twelve-months to heal and I’ll take the full-time and come back next pre-season ready to go - I’m not rushing back, I want to get back to my peak.

“I can only prepare for what I can control, so I can hope for the best really in terms of the draft - at this stage I can’t play this year so it’ll be hard to show the recruiters what I can do, so I’m just focusing on getting the body right and looking to go back as a 19-year-old at the Stingrays.”

But through the despair and loneliness that sometimes accompanies an injury that so many footballers have to overcome, Darling sees a silver-lining.

“I’m pretty fortunate I have a good mindset with injuries so I feel I’ve coped pretty well with it - I’ve been focusing on more of a coaching role with the Stingrays to pretty much improve myself as well - I feel like I understand footy a bit more, and that coaching and tactical side to it,” he explained.

“I see it as an opportunity to get bigger and stronger and to be a better footballer in the longrun - we’ll see what happens but I’m positive that this will benefit me.”

Darling said that his involvement as a member of the AFL Academy has drastically helped ramp up his recovery.

“The AFL Academy has been great - especially doing the knee, they have just been a big part of my rehab so far - it’s awesome to be able to call someone up whenever and talk about it, and just to be able to learn off them is great,” he said.

“There are some great people there, no doubt.”

And his surname is already known within AFL circles, with his cousin Jack playing for the West Coast Eagles.

The older Darling, who has played 128 games for the Eagles, and kicked 228 goals, has been a major influence on his younger namesake’s career to date.

“I haven’t spoken to Jack a whole lot about the knee - when I first did it, he just said to be elite with the rehab and that’ll take you far,” he said.

“But he’s been great and is a big influence on me in my footy for sure.”

Redlegs return to their roots

By Nicholas Creely The Dandenong Redlegs are embarking on a new era, looking to right the wrongs of the past and move forward with a fresh new look.

In the previous five years the Redlegs have finished 11th, 11th, 8th, 2nd and 7th, with only one finals appearance in this time.

In comes a fresh-looking executive committee, led by club veteran Michael Lawrence, with the club securing Nathan Boyd to coach the senior side in 2017.

Boyd has worked in the Geelong District Football League as coach of Corio, and brings a wealth of knowledge from many different clubs.

Adding to this, they have unveiled their new jumper - the predominant navy-blue finally returns to the club, with the whitejumpers to be shelved permanently.

The club has also announced Ash Richmond as the new netball senior coach - with over 25-years of experience playing netball, both on a social level and at a significantly higher level, Richmond adds some vital experience to a Redlegs team looking to go all the way.

It is his first gig as a senior netball coach after previous stints as a specialist coach, while he has also represented Victoria in both men’s and mixed reserve teams.

And just last week, the Redlegs finalised their football leadership group for the upcoming season on social media, with Regan Hall and Trent Cole set to lead the club.

Boyd said both are natural leaders, but both excellent players who will bring some great energy to the group this season.

“Regan brings a very smart football brain alongside high respect from the playing group, supporters and the wider league alike,” he said.

“Reg is a passionate club person and we are all proud to see him leading the way again in 2017.

“Trent has driven performances on the training track and lead by example over the pre-season. He’s always being the first and last at the club and as a player. Trent is a prolific ball winner and will bring a lot of leadership by example and training and match days.“ Other Redlegs’ leaders for the 2017 season are Jayke Hopkins (Vice Captain), Phillip Brown , Xavier Pauli and Dave Vassallo.

The club has brought in a slab of new players, with both Andrew Sloss and David Vasallo joining the club from Moorabbin.

The Redlegs open up their 2017 campaign with a match against the strong Ashwood side on April 8 at Essex Heights Reserve.

Ashley has the cricketing world at his feet

By David Nagel IT is remarkable to think that at just 15 years of age Ashley Chandrasinghe will be chasing his second national title when he lines up for Victoria in Brisbane next week.

The Narre Warren South left-hander has been chosen to represent his state at the School Sports Australia 15 and Under Cricket Championships taking on the best from around the country in the hunt for the Ricky Ponting Cup. But for Ashley -he won’t be overly anxious because he’s been there and done it all before.

He was first selected for Victoria as a 10-yearold cricketing prodigy, travelling to South Australia for the Under-12 Championships in December 2012.

By that stage of his fledgling career he had already captained a Dandenong and District Cricket Association (DDCA) representative side after successfully modelling his style on fellow lefthanders Mike Hussey and Kumar Sangakkara.

“I just like to watch how they play and what they do at the crease,” Ashley said.

“Just like them I like to graft early, occupy the crease, but if the bad ball is there you need to deal with it.”

Ashley showed promising signs in that first carnival, scoring a match-winning 16 not out under enormous pressure against Northern Territory.

But it was at his second carnival in Bendigo in January 2014 where he really made his mark.

He batted three times, with scores of 39 (Northern Territory), 57 not out (South Australia) and 29 (New South Wales) helping the Vics to become Under-12 champions.

“I still get nervous but I guess I’ve had the opportunity to learn a few things from those previous championships and hopefully that will give me an advantage in Brisbane,” he said.

Alex will head into the championships primed for a big performance after a solid and very busy season of cricket.

He plays for Buckley Ridges in the DDCA junior competition, taking on his first club Berwick Springs in the weekend’s Under-17 (1) grand final. He had made 411 runs at an average of 82.2 heading into the season decider despite still being eligible for the under-15s.

After an impressive heat win on Sunday, all eyes were on Jimmy Newob in the restricted win final. He exploded out of box 7 and in no time set up a seven length lead mid-race, he maintained the break and went on to win in 29.57 - the fastest time of the night.

“He can jump but he hasn’t been doing it all the time,” said co-trainer Melissa Fullerton postrace.

“He did it tonight and gave himself that clean cross to the rail that he needed. Once he got to the front I was confident they weren’t going to run him down.”

At the final hurdle the Dandenong Rangers have failed to deliver with the Sydney Uni Flames claiming the WNBL title on Friday night.

In front of their home crowd, the Rangers were uncharacteristically sloppy despite starting like a house on fire, eventually going down 75-62.

Trying to force the grand final into a third game on Sunday, the signs were strong early as the Rangers skipped out to 22-11 lead at the firstbreak.

But the Flames tightened up defensively and became irresistible at the three-point-line, and started to wrestle back control despite the deafening noise produced from the crowd.

It then culminated in over two-quarters of dominance from the Flames, with the Rangers unable to find an answer.

By the start of the last-term, in which the Flames opened up a 12-point buffer, the fizz in the game faded away, with the Rangers bravely fighting it out to the end despite the inevitable loss.

Leliani Mitchell was the outstanding force throughout the grand final series, taking out the Rachel Sporn Medal for the MVP, but it was Belinda Snell (15 points and 11 rebounds) who stole the show with a truly dominant display.

Steph Cumming (17 points) and Sara Blicavs (10 points and six rebounds) both ended their respective season’s on a high.

Retiring legend Jacinta Kennedy did all she could to drag her team over the line with 9 points and two assists, and paid tribute to the club immediately after the game.

“It’s definitely not the way we wanted to end the year, but I could not be prouder to be part of this team, to be playing alongside the girls and for the coaching staff - I fully believe that this group can go one step further next year, and I’ll be here cheering every step of the way,” she said.

MOTORING Subaru coupe is a driver’s treat

By Alistair Kennedy We seem to spend much of our road testing time behind the wheels of SUVs nowadays.

As much as we appreciate the functionality and convenience of these vehicles they do fall down in one respect … they’re not a lot of fun to drive.

So we’ve given ourselves a treat with this week’s road test, the Subaru BRZ, a delightful little 2.0-litre two-door coupe with six-speed manual transmission.

Subaru BRZ has been on sale in Australia since 2012 although it didn’t hit the dealers’ showroom floors until 2014 with supply restrictions seeing them sold exclusively over the internet in that interim period.

The BRZ is built as a joint venture with Toyota, Subaru’s part-owner, and it competes directly against its near-identical twin, the Toyota 86.

The division of labour between the two companies makes sense with Toyota looking after the product planning and styling while Subaru is in charge of its engineering development and manufacture, the latter at Subaru’s Ota plant in Japan.

The latest BRZ was released in late 2016 with some minor design tweaks, extra engine outputs and revised suspension tuning.

New exterior features include LED headlights and taillights, new 10-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a wider and lower bumper design.

Inside there’s optional red stitching and BRZ embossing on the front seats, enhanced instrument gauges and a new steering wheel.

Topping of the package are price reductions with the manual BRZ now selling for $32,990 and the automatic for $34,990, down by $1230 and $1735 respectively on the preceding model.

The 2012 model sold for $37,150 (manual) and $39,730 (automatic).

Subaru BRZ is a real head-turner.

The BRZ certainly looks the part with its wide and low stance, short overhangs and flared wheel arches.

The front features a large, hexagonal grille with sweeping headlights and the rear is tall and square with an additional brake light positioned between twin large tail pipes.

The cabin features a roofline in keeping with the car’s low profile and although it’s necessary to hunker down into the driver’s seat once settled in the seat is firm but comfortable and there’s plenty of leg and headroom.

Although technically a four-seater, the two rear seats are only there for emergency use and not for long-distance trips.

At 218 litres the boot is relatively small although the rear seatbacks do fold flat for extra storage space.

Surprisingly for a car where space is at a premium, BRZ comes with a full-size spare wheel.

Power for the BRZ comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged horizontally-opposed petrol engine that generates 152 kW of power at 7000 rpm and 212 Nm of torque at 6400 revs (147 kW and 205 Nm with the auto).

The engine also sounds great with the characteristic throaty sound of the Subaru ‘boxer’ engine.

With our fun focus we made sure that our test car had the six-speed manual, a superbly notchy short-throw unit that’s both fast and smooth and just asks to be used frequently.

Both the manual and the six-speed automatic transmissions were specifically developed for the BRZ. The automatic gets paddle gear shifts.

BRZ breaks new ground for Subaru in Australia in having rear-wheel drive. All other models sold here have all-wheel drive (AWD).

The little Subie coupe gets a five-star ANCAP safety rating courtesy of seven airbags; stability and traction control; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; Isofix child seat anchor points; LCD daytime running lights; front and rear fog lights; hill start assist; and reversing camera.

Also new for the MY17 BRZ is a Vehicle Dynamic Control ‘Track’ for extra performance.

Information display is through a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen. Bluetooth pairing is fast and logical and the USB and auxiliary sockets are in the front of the central console.

The audio system has six speakers but having to compete against the combination of the engine burble and road noise means the sound quality isn’t great.

As expected in a car of this type, the ride is firm with plenty of feel for the road yet comfortable enough for an extended trip.

Steering is precise and direct with excellent feedback to the driver. Ride comfort is up with the best in this class.

There’s no loss of driver confidence in the use of two-wheel rather than four-wheel drive, with the BRZ suspension producing plenty of grip and stability.

Driving height is lower than we would prefer but that’s a minor compromise for all the handling benefits.

It’s always offered excellent value never more so than now with a price cut and added equipment bringing the starting price down to $32,990 prior to on-road costs.
