n Wednesday 8 February, MacKillop College Werribee opened the school year with a Mass celebrated by Most Reverend Archbishop Dennis Hart DD and concelebrated with Canonical Administrators Rev Fr Frank Buhagiar PP and Rev Fr Pius Kodakkathanath PP, Rev Fr Shymon Thekkekalathunga and Rev Fr Darien Sticklen.

The Opening Mass at MacKillop College was a sacred opportunity for us to gather as a community to celebrate the Eucharist. At this time, we entrusted our year to God’s providence and care, and prayed for the deepening of our relationship with Christ in all that we do. The Opening Mass is inspirational in its focus, marking the spiritual beginning of the college year. Our theme for this year is ‘Peace for our common home’ aligned with a quote from Mary MacKillop, ‘Remember, we are but travelers here’ circa 1866.

Our faith in life was evident as the College community gathered in the Tenison Woods Centre where a sense of unity was demonstrated by the number of people that gathered in reverence despite the extreme heat. Principal, Mr Rory Kennedy exclaimed that, “Our faith is and remains always the life of our college.”

Our College vision is grounded in Gospel values and the tradition of St Mary of the Cross.

Since then, the College has educated a large portion of the Catholic Community and is proud of its current status.

acred Heart Girls’ College was established by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM) in 1957. When Euphrasie Barbier formed The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions Congregation in Lyon, France in 1861, she took the name Mother Mary of the Heart of Jesus. It is from her name and her special devotion to the Sacred Heart, that our College is named. The Founding Sisters brought with them the wonderful traditions of their Congregation. T

he Federation of Catholic Regional Colleges (CRC) is a collaboration of five Catholic coeducational secondary colleges, located in the rapidly expanding North Western suburbs of Melbourne. Each College within the Federation is partially autonomous with its own administrative structures. As a complex, the federation is governed by the Catholic Regional Colleges Board and its students are identified in the community by a single uniform and College crest. The name of each college is a combination of its campus location prefixed with ’Catholic Regional College’.

The first of the colleges to open was the St Albans campus in 1978, followed closely by the opening of a second campus in Melton West two years later. In 1982, a senior college in Sydenham was opened to cater for the senior secondary education of students from the Melton and St Albans campuses. In the same year an additional Years 7-10 college opened in North Keilor. As of 2007, the latest addition to the CRC Federation is a college in Caroline Springs.

As a Catholic community we recognise the presence of God who challenges us to embrace Gospel values.

We continually look for opportunities to express our Faith through practical action with regard to Social Justice.

GENAZZANO FCJ COLLEGE A lesson in giving back at the 2016 GLS Breakfast

O

n a beautiful spring morning in Melbourne, the students and alumnae of Genazzano FCJ College, Loreto Mandeville and Sacré Cœur, came together on September 7 2016 at the 14th Annual GLS Breakfast, in celebration of three inspirational women.

Held in the hallowed grounds of the MCG in the Members’ Dining room, the event was attended by almost 300 women and a handful of men!

Although an early start, we were treated to amazing speakers, each with a different story to tell. The first was Dee Madigan (Loreto), Creative Director and owner of Campaign Edge advertising. Dee began her professional career as a teacher and joined the world of advertising in 1996. Next to speak was Libby Lyons (Sacré Cœur), the new Director of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, responsible for driving change through working with employees and Government to improve women’s workforce participation, and reduce the gender pay gap.

Libby has worked in both female and male dominated industries, heading up BHP Billiton’s Corporate Affairs for its Olympic Dam project! Libby is a passionate advocate

for equality, however her enduring message was the call for all women to be champions for each other and provide ongoing support.

Monique Van den Boom (Genazzano), while the youngest of the trio had her own unique story. Monique takes us back to her school days, when she didn’t know what she wanted to be when she “grew up”, and while recognising some people fall naturally into a career, others don’t choose their pathway; it chooses them. For Monique Van den Boom (1997), it was the insight of Genazzano Careers Counsellor, Ms Lele, that opened her mind to the allied health sector and gave clarity to a year 10 student who was unsure about where life would take her.

“I had the vague idea of medicine but I didn’t really want to be a doctor or a nurse,” says Van den Boom. “I also enjoyed making things, doing craft and taking a handson approach. The way Ms Lele walked me through the things I liked doing. She was fantastic, and the reason I discovered prosthetics and orthotics. I always say to my dad it was because of her and Genazzano that I’m doing what I doing. I owe her a massive thank you.”

Van den Boom went on to complete a Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics with honours at LaTrobe University, and for the past 13 years has worked in the UK and Australia along with several volunteer stints as Prosthetic Director for a not-for-profit organisation in Haiti.

Of this work, Van den Boom displays both optimism at the progress being made and a delight in her ability to make a difference.

“I’ve been to Haiti three times, where we provide a prosthetic service to people. I first went there just after the big earthquake and it’s been one of the best experiences career-wise and personally. I’ve made some fantastic friends and when you’re there you realise you are surrounded by people who are there for the same reason.

“We barely scratch the surface (of the need), but the goal is to establish a sustainable clinic, train the locals and have it going when we’re not there as well. It’s a very important personal achievement for me, and it’s nice being in a job where people are grateful!”

Van den Boom began her Genazzano journey in Year 7, and was one of only three girls from her local primary school to join the College.

“Year 7 was a big year. Not just attending a school that was much bigger (than the local primary school) but also the independence that came with travelling on public transport by myself. I lived in East Doncaster so it was a fair commute.”

However, her early worries were quickly eased. “I have three older brothers and no sisters. Being surrounded by girls was important for my parents and I absolutely loved it. I do recall being apprehensive going into Year 7 but very quickly I felt supported.

“Prior to me, no one in my family had gone to Gen. I think my parents just wanted a school that provided a solid curriculum. I was into music at the time and the school had an excellent reputation in that area.”

Reflecting now, Van den Boom strongly credits the College with her adventurous spirit.

“Genazzano encourages driven, motivated, independent women. The school was supportive, you didn’t have limits.

It allowed for an exploration of what you might like to do, and it built your confidence. While I find myself being very driven, Genazzano definitely drew it out of me. It’s a big part of my personality now, taking risks and being fully involved.”

With the education sector’s recent emphasis on encouraging girls to consider STEM careers as viable pathways, Van den Boom is happy to report that females are very well represented in her profession.

“If you took a snapshot of prosthetics, say, 30 years ago, it would have been all males. But that’s mainly because the profession originated from boot makers, it was like a trade. The demographics now reflect more females and a much younger group. Clinically, the focus has changed where there are the patient-oriented assessments. You now see more females in those (higher management) positions.”

In finishing, Van den Boom described the way she helps her clients achieve their goals and accept their new selfimage. As she explained, it’s not just about providing a device for a missing limb, it’s listening and helping them adapt and achieve their goals.

Taking on the world has led Van den Boom into what she describes as an incredibly rewarding career, and she encourages all current students to challenge themselves and be their best.

“Try and take any opportunity you can. Don’t sit back, get out there and explore. You don’t have to be the bright, bubbly clown - I wasn’t - but there was a lot more to gain by putting your hand up and trying everything the school had to offer.” www.genazzano.vic.edu.au

MACKILLOP MacKillop endeavours to provide outstanding education

arlier last year we gathered as a college community to commemorate the Eucharistic Celebration and blessing of ‘The Chapel of Saint Mary of the Cross.’

The Chapel had been a labour of love for the College community and has become the heart and soul of the school. The Chapel enables us to nurture our education in faith. In addition to our Chapel, our College recently opened a new building, ‘La Merci,’ which boasts an innovative and contemporary learning environment open spaces and classrooms. These digitally rich General Purpose Learning Areas (GPLAs) will support our students with appropriate learning to assist them in becoming ICT proficient and productive community members in this 21st Century. We believe that this careful design of these modern learning spaces will support and energise the individual and collaborative learning experiences, boost standards, improve educational opportunities and enrich pathways.

Our College features outstanding facilities that are complimented by beautifully maintained gardens, sporting fields and recreational areas. Our emphasis on contemporary learning strategies is supported by up-todate and extensive digital infrastructure. Andrew hopes to study Commerce at Melbourne University with a view to complete a Masters in Engineering upon completion of his Commerce Degree. We congratulate Andrew on achieving a perfect score of 50 in Further Mathematics, in fact he will be acknowledged and awarded at the Victorian Premier’s Awards for this significant achievement. This provides Andrew with a fantastic opportunity to help launch into his future career.

We wish Andrew every success in the future.

Other successes at the college include that of 2016 Year 12 Media students, Jaya Abela, Jacqueline Lake and Zachary Taylor who have been admitted into this year’s Top Designs 2016 to be held at Melbourne Museum. Top Designs showcases the very cream of VCE students’ work from across the state. Congratulations to these students whose media photographic sequence was chosen to be part of Top Designs 2016 – Seasons of Excellence. Their folio work will be on display at the Melbourne Museum exhibition from March to July 2017 amongst the work of other students who achieved excellence in Top Designs.

We also celebrate the success of Elias Anton, a standout actor in the title role of ‘Barracuda’, who made a striking television debut in the lead role as Danny Kelly. The refurbished Good Samaritan Convent in Coragulac, near Colac, is home to the College’s Year 7 Orientation camps and, even more importantly, is a key part of Thomas Carr College’s innovative and unique iD9 program - a specialised curriculum that includes a 3 week residential country experience at Year 9 level.

Activities and project work are based around the local Coragulac and Otway environments of lake, coast and forest. One of the aims is to support students in developing a set of knowledge, skills and behaviours that

Deeper learning can be achieved through collaborative curriculum planning; for example, the concept of ‘ecofootprint’ may be taught within a Science, Geography and Personal Learning program, where students may calculate their own eco-footprint, compare it with other students, schools and/or countries, make resolutions about reducing their footprint and evaluate the effectiveness of personal strategies used to reduce it.

The core of the Academy careers program, run by Careers Practitioner Amanda Siva, is to recognise how each student can work hard during her schooling years to open up as many opportunities for her post-school life. WORKING THROUGH TANGLE OF WORDS Dyslexia diagnosis gives parents and child a sense of direction

W

hen Mary’s* son was diagnosed with dyslexia in Grade 2, she knew there was a long process ahead of them.

But thanks to the wonderful staff at Caulfield Grammar School, her son is now thriving and his self-confidence has boomed.

Mary said the diagnosis several years ago gave her and her husband a sense of understanding as to why their son had been struggling to read and write in school.

“It gave us a sense of direction,” Mary said.

“Dyslexia covers a wide range of learning difficulties, and can affect different children in different ways. From the word go he struggled to recognise letters and write his name.”

Mary said her son was tested for a number of different issues, but it was when they saw a child psychologist that the diagnosis occurred. Since then, she and her husband, as well as the staff at Caulfield Grammar School have been working closely with him to improve academically and gain self-confidence.

“He was too young to understand anything about dyslexia when he was first diagnosed, but we have always been honest with him about it,” she said.

“It was only when he was in about Grade 4 that he started to realise he had learning difficulties. We told him he had dyslexia and had to work harder than most of his peers.”

“He went into (secondary school) terrified because suddenly he was leaving a class of 50 kids to enter a class of 180 kids. He didn’t know where he would be in the pecking order or how he would cope. It was a big change, let alone when you also have to struggle with dyslexia,” she said.

“He started off on a bit of a back foot, failing his first maths test. But he had a fabulous teacher who put in place a whole range of programs to help him, and before long, he worked out he could do it. He has gone from being a student where he had to be supported, to now being able to get A’s on his own. It’s huge for his confidence.”

Mary said that while her son was thriving in school, he still had to put in a lot of hard work and dedication.

“It’s a long process,” she said.

“He can’t be too relaxed about his school work. He knows he has to put in a lot of hard yards.

“It’s heartbreaking as a parent to see your child struggle but he’s doing so well now. He’s even started to read for his own enjoyment. It’s fabulous to see.” *Not her real name.

Mary’s son is now in Grade 8 and is now thriving thanks to encouragement from his family and support programs at the school.

“As soon as the diagnosis was made, Caulfield Grammar School set up support programs to help him,” she said.

“He was offered the reading recovery program, which is usually only offered to older people, and he persisted with that until the end of Grade 4 or 5. Even then he had English support.”

Thankfully my back was to it and I had all my protective gear on, including my helmet and neck protector, but I do remember my face starting to burn.

But these two women, they were touch and go.â&#x20AC;?

I said to them, â&#x20AC;&#x153;youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got blisters, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry about that, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re breathingâ&#x20AC;Ś youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re aliveâ&#x20AC;Ś youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re out of thereâ&#x20AC;Ś youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not burning anymore, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry about your face; youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re alive.â&#x20AC;?

To watch these guys, who started out as healthy people and now who are skin and bone, breaks your heart, it really does, knowing that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve contracted this because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gone into situations to help others. This experience has certainly changed my life, and I suppose thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I have a real focus on itâ&#x20AC;Ś Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m passionate that as Emergency Services and as a society and in Government, we need to be looking into better ways of prevention, educating people and dealing with these tough topics.â&#x20AC;?

With men between the ages of 26 and 48, the risk of depression is higher, simply because they just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have that male outlet/support network. :KHQ Î&#x2013; UHČľHFW RQ P\ WLPH DW 6DOHVLDQ &ROOHJH &KDGVWRQH WKH EHQHČ´WV UHDOO\ come to mind. Thinking back to the male friendships that I made at school and still have today (and the same for my brother), we were so fortunate that we went to a school that provided such solid male bonding opportunities and mateship.

The brotherhood and mateship from Salesian has been a valued connection for me and my brother. I regularly read about mental health issues, in particular male depression, and one of the key themes IRU VXÎ?HUHUV LV DERXW KDYLQJ DQ RXWOHW WR speak.

I feel fortunate that I have been in that position where I have been able to help Salesian mates that I have had since my time at the school, because I myself have learnt the value of having that outlet, they too have given me that outlet support.

Having that connection is invaluable and it canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be underestimated.â&#x20AC;?

A SENSE OF BELONGING Catholic school parents say their children are genuinely cared for and understood by their teachers

atholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says the greatest compliment he has ever received was overhearing one parent tell another: “If you want your child to be truly happy, then you should send them to a Catholic school.”

“Our schools encourage students to learn through enquiry, and teachers are encouraged to support students in their search for understanding and meaning,” Mr Elder explains.

“We want our students to explore the big questions in life with a clear vision of what is good about themselves, their relationships and the world in which they live.”

A

cademic results, wellbeing reports, enrolment figures and affordability all point to a flourishing future for Catholic education in Victoria.

This year over 210,000 students – or close to one in four Victorian school children – will enjoy a Catholic education in one of nearly 500 schools state-wide.

Continued academic achievement is one of the key reasons for the appeal of a Catholic education.

University of Melbourne research on the “value add” performance of non-government education has found that Catholic schools add an average of six points to tertiary admission ranks, or ATAR scores, at the career defining end of a student’s school journey.

Catholic schools have continued to shine in Victorian Certificate of Education results, performing above the state average and showing significant improvements in quality.

The average median score achieved by Catholic school students in last year’s VCE results came in at almost two points higher that the state average, while the number of schools where all students satisfactorily completed the VCE increased by well over 10 per cent.

A major Australian Bureau of Statistics survey has found that three out of four Catholic secondary students will go on to university.

Curtin University research released last year shows a Catholic pays real-world dividends. It has found that Australians who attended Catholic schools enjoy a wage premium of around 10 per cent.

But academic achievement is only one part of a Catholic education. The Curtin University work also singles out for special mention findings that graduates from Catholic schools enjoy higher levels of life satisfaction and happiness.

“The stream of active contributors, good citizens and welladjusted young people that graduate from our schools each year reinforce our philosophy and direction,” Catholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says.

The ABS work also shows that Catholic students are far less likely to be bullied than those attending government schools.

Mr Elder says Catholic Education Melbourne is striving to be a leader in child safety.

Parents also feel Catholic schools represent value for money, speaking of their affordability.

Mr Elder says all these factors are leading to a booming demand for Catholic schools.

More than half a dozen new schools are planned to open by the start of the 2020 school year in the MelbourneGeelong area: primary schools in Craigieburn West, Wallan East, Torquay North, Wollert, Sunbury and Bannockburn and secondary colleges in Armstrong Creek and Wyndham Vale.

There are also proposals for new schools in Melton South, Werribee, Bacchus Marsh, Greenvale, Merrifield West, Doreen West and Docklands/Fishermans Bend in the first half of next decade.

NEW CATHOLIC SCHOOL FOR SALE DIOCESE T

he new Catholic primary school planned for Cowes on Phillip Island is yet another example of the strong growth of Catholic education in the Diocese of Sale. The new school will be named Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School and will be built at a cost of more than $5 million. The school will eventually cater for up to 180 students.

Stage one is likely to consist of four classrooms, a staffroom and administration area and will be completed for the start of the 2018 school year, with subsequent stages also planned. Our Lady Star of the Sea will be the third Catholic primary school to open in the Diocese of Sale in six years.

There has been a necessity for a Catholic primary school on Phillip Island for some time, according to the Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Sale, Maria Kirkwood. “We are delighted to be able to satisfy the needs of those parents who have been calling for a Catholic school on Phillip Island,” said Ms Kirkwood.

St Mark’s is a Catholic primary school in Dingley catering for 470 students from Foundation – Year Six. Introducing our Headstart Programâ&#x20AC;Ś...

In 2017, we introduced our new prep orientation program called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Headstartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The program is designed to give both children and parents an insight into how our school operates and provide opportunities for a smooth transition from kinder to school. Over a period of 8 weeks parents and children attended a weekly one hour session with our experienced early childhood staff, providing children with opportunities for social interaction and structured learning activities. Parents also attended information sessions that enabled them to gain further information about our school and how they can support and be involved in their childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education. They also had the opportunity to meet new families. The program will commence mid term 3 and conclude mid term 4.

Enrolments for 2018 open on Tuesday 18th April.
