A ‘reason to thrive’

By Jeremy Sollars Warwick is known for its love of horses, and from this week a new not-for-profit initiative will tap into the positive healing power of horses to help at-risk young people in our community.

‘Reason To Thrive’ will be launched this Friday 10 March and will offer “equine-assisted communication and body language training” to disengaged young people in what is a growing therapeutic movement in Australia.

Program facilitator Robyn Wickham says equine-assisted therapy offers “an opportunity for at-risk youth to engage on an entirely different level than in a traditional therapeutic setting”.

“Through learning basic natural horsemanship ground skills - no riding involved - clients develop patience, trust, self-confidence and selfawareness,” Robyn said.

“This necessitates emotional regulation and reduces aggressive behaviours, with an improvement in individuals understanding their own body language and communication patterns.

“For those who have lost hope and trust in other humans due to traumatic events or trauma a horse provides an honest partner, often mirroring back emotions, providing feedback on our emotional regulation.

“Financial hardship, family break-down, behavioural problems and lack of engagement in school and the community are some of the issues faced by youth in Warwick and the Southern Downs.

“Anxiety and depressive symptoms can occur when navigating home relationships and friendships at school and work, resulting in low selfesteem and self-concept.

“Difficulties with emotional dysregulation and bullying are other areas impacting on the mental health of our young people.

“Reason to Thrive will be supporting a recovery framework.

After viewing the exhibition artist Michael Pospischil had this to say: “Most of the portraits look directly at you with a strong, proud and uncompromising stance, the antithesis of traditional iconography. It is that rather than the nudity that I notice, the challenge to the viewer’s preconceptions.”

The exhibition is open until Sunday 23 April.

Paramedics assaulted, but no charges laid No charges have been laid over recent assaults on female Stanthorpe paramedics while on duty within the last fortnight.

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) confirmed to the Free Times there have been “two cases of assaults against female paramedics in the past fortnight in the Stanthorpe area”.

“Any assault against ambulance officers is unacceptable,” a QAS spokesman said.

“In one incident an officer was pushed and another instance (involved) a person who grabbed an officer’s stethoscope.

“Thankfully, on both occasions the officers were not injured and completed their shifts.

“No police charges were laid in relation to the incidents.”

A Warwick man found guilty in 2016 of molesting an underage girl has had his appeal against the conviction dismissed.

The 73-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was last year found guilty of both maintaining a sexual relationship with and indecent treatment of a child under 16. He appealed the decision, claiming the verdict was unreasonable. The appeal was dismissed last Friday in the Brisbane Court of Appeal.

The Warwick man was last year sentenced to 18 months’ jail, suspended after serving four months behind bars.

The man is due to face a second trial - relating to a separate complainant over charges of a sexual nature against a minor - in the Toowoomba District Court next Monday, 13 March.

LNP nod for Lister

By Jeremy Sollars Up until a few days ago, James Lister wasn’t exactly a household name on the Southern Downs and Granite Belt - but that’s changed in a big way.

The affable 40-year-old and soon-tobe-former RAAF officer convincingly won a ballot of local LNP members last Friday, 3 March, to become the party’s endorsed candidate for the State seat of Southern Downs at the next election.

While it isn’t officially due until January 2018, the political pundits both locally and further afield in the Sunshine State are tipping that ALP Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk - whose government is on a parliamentary knife-edge - will call the election early, possibly within the next several months if not sooner.

And when she does, James Lister says he will be well and truly ready.

James will replace veteran Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg, who will retire from State politics at the next election, and while he stands at well over six feet in height he acknowledged he has “big shoes to fill”.

In last week’s ballot of local LNP members, James gained 180 votes, easily trumping rivals and current Southern Downs councillors deputy mayor Jo McNally and Cameron Gow, who are understood to have received 12 and 35 votes respectively, with some 43 members opting for none of the three hopefuls.

James told the Free Times this week he is under no illusions about his status as a non-local - he grew up in Brisbane and has worked all over Australia during his RAAF career and has lived near Amberley air base in recent times - but points out his parents and his sister and her husband have lived in Stanthorpe for some years.

And he and his wife Belinda plan to join them, with the couple looking

to buy a home in Stanthorpe as soon as practical and find a school - preferably a small country one - for their two sons, Jeremy, 6, and William, 3.

James and Belinda’s was an RAAF romance, with Belinda having reached the same rank as her husband of Squadron Leader but their military careers are now behind them, with both having applied for discharge following James’ LNP endorsement.

The pair were both most recently senior officers in the RAAF’s logistics area and James freely admits he is no pilot, saying his senior officers preferred him with his feet firmly planted on the ground.

“It was wonderful to be able to serve my country in a number of different roles, including overseas,” James told the Free Times.

“My time with the RAAF gave me the opportunity to live and work in many places around Australia, but now I am looking forward to being able to stay in the one place - it’s great to have the chance to finally choose where I live.

“Belinda and I will now be directing our efforts solely on the campaign now we’re no longer with the RAAF - we’ll be living on bread and dripping for the time being but getting out and meeting people and finding out their issues are now the focus.”

As well as his RAAF career - which included a five-month stint in the United Arab Emirates in 2009 - James has been an aide-de-camp to both former Governor-General Michael Jeffery, in 2004, and to former Queensland Governor Quentin Bryce from 2007 to 2008.

Before the RAAF he worked as a consultant for a labour hire firm in Brisbane, following a stint with the Young Nationals as a field officer - he joined the party in 1992 at the age of 16 - which involved drumming up members and

support across the state and “organising toga parties”.

James says he isn’t fazed by the surge in support for One Nation in Queensland, with Stanthorpe business figure Mark McNichol - the husband of councillor Marika McNichol - looking likely to be their Southern Downs candidate.

“I’m not worried about other candidates, I am here to share my values and experience with the people of Southern Downs,” James said.

“I believe in State governments doing what they need to do - improving roads, water infrastructure and healthcare and particularly in Queensland’s regions.”

On the currently controversial topic of Queensland’s abortion laws, James says he does not support “further liberalisation of the current law”, following the recent debacle in State Parliament

which saw independent MP Rob Pyne ditch a private member’s bill to legalise abortion in Queensland.

In his spare time, James Lister is an electronics and CB radio enthusiast, and also enjoys spending time with his boys and Belinda, who he paid tribute to as a “great source of support” in the lead-up to the last week’s LNP ballot.

He also says outgoing MP “The Borg” has likewise been a tower of support in recent times.

“I am my own person, but Lawrence has obviously been and will continue to be a valuable source of advice and help,” James said.

“He has been an excellent local member, and I can only hope to serve the electorate as well as he has done if I’m successful in winning Southern Downs for the LNP.”

Robyn - who also works as a teacher’s aide in the special education unit at Warwick East State School - has been working with youth and family services including Red Cross Youth Support Service and the Department of Communities, Child safety and Disability Services, and says she has “witnessed the transformation that the equine contact can provide”.

The youth program Reason to Thrive Inc. is proudly supported by Thrive Equine Experiences and assisted by a Southern Downs Regional Council funding program.

The program consists of three sessions, usually one per week for three weeks, and no previous experience with horses is required.

Thanks to the SDRC’s funding, a limited number of subsidised positions in the program are available to young people between the ages of 8 and 24 years.

The program will officially be opened by Federal MP for Maranoa David Littleproud on Friday 10 March, at Thrive Equine Experiences, 153 East Street, Warwick.

Council work to construct a new concrete bridge on Connells Bridge Road, Bony Mountain, began this week with road and bridge closures expected to be in place until the end of May. The existing timber bridge on Connells Bridge Road, located one kilometre from Leyburn Cunningham Road, will be closed to all traffic until late May 2017 to enable construction of the new bridge.

The detour route to and from Leyburn Cunningham Road is through Wheatvale Plains Road and Upper Wheatvale Road. Southern Downs Regional Council secured matched funding under the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program, to replace the old timber bridge on Connells Bridge Road, Bony Mountain, with a new and improved concrete structure.

Work has begun on the latest residential subdivision in Warwick - a three-hectare patch of ground off the eastern end of Hawker Road.

The land in question - 37 to 39 Hawker Road - is owned by Henri Stevens, who is the father of the late Anna Armitage, with the land coming into the family’s ownership in 2009.

The family decided last year the time was ripe to apply to subdivide the land and gained council approval last February and operational works approval last August for its ‘Warwick Heights’ development.

Family spokesman Ray Armitage told the Free Times the land would be split into 15 blocks ranging from 800 to 7000 square metres, saying the overall parcel is “one of the last of the big blocks in the main part of Warwick.”

The hard yards on the ground are being done by Toowoombabased SEDL civil contractors and the new estate will be family friendly, with a footpath link to nearby parkland.

The elevated land also has pleasing views to the south across the Warwick skyline.

Land values in the Southern Downs Regional Council area have risen by a modest 2.8 per cent over the last 12 months, according to the Queensland Valuer-General’s latest report.

The Croydon Shire in far north Queensland recorded the highest growth in land valuations of 72.3 per cent year-on-year, while the other end of the scale reflected the decline of the Queensland mining boom, with the Gladstone Regional Council area’s land values slumping 20.6 per cent.

The percentage changes are an overall figure reflecting changes in all land types, including rural and residential.

Control pests or else

By Jeremy Sollars Landowners across the Southern Downs and Granite with more than five hectares will be slugged with a minimum $500 fee next financial year if they fail to comply with the council’s pest management requirements.

Councillors at a special meeting in Warwick last week voted in favour of adopting a new ‘Invasive Pest Control Scheme Policy’ which a report by officers said was aimed at “incentivising and increasing voluntary compliance with invasive pest control requirements”.

The scheme could net more than $1.1 million in revenue each financial year for the council, depending on the extent of compliance by landowners.

Invasive pests include pest animals such as foxes, feral dogs and pigs and invasive plant species such as African boxthorn, tree pear and blackberry.

Around 5000 primary production and non-primary production properties in the region will fall under the new pest control scheme, and landowners will receive advice on their required actions with their next rates notices to be issued in the first week of July.

They will be required to submit a ‘Proposed Works Form’ to the council within 30 days of receiving their rates notices, on which they will outline what pest control actions they plan to undertake on their lands in the new financial year, with works required to be completed by March 2018.

If they fail to submit a ‘Proposed Works Form’, they will be sent one reminder notice, and if the form is still not returned, they will be placed on a council hit-list to be levied later in the financial year with the minimum $500 fee. This fee will be charged on a ratein-the-dollar based on land valuation, of $0.003 for primary production proper-

In brief Bunnings legal appeal plan Warwick real estate agent Helen Harm has formally lodged a legal appeal against the Southern Downs Regional Council approval of a new Bunnings outlet on the Condamine River floodplain, behind KFC at the corner of Canning and Condamine streets.

The appeal has been lodged with the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland, with Mrs Harm contending that a 3.8 metre high “island” will be created by fill on the site, which will detrimentally affect floodwater flows and increase property damage.

Mrs Harm has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover legal fees which she estimates could top $30,000.

The report to last week’s special meeting concedes that “it is not reasonable to expect that all 5000 properties subjected to the scheme will be inspected” by council’s pest management officers.

It also makes it clear that existing staff dealing with pest management “do not have the capacity to undertake the field and administration work required to deliver the scheme” and that new staff will need to be recruited.

The report also states that “it is anticipated a percentage of landowners

will submit ‘Proposed Works Forms’ fraudulently stating there is no work to be done” and that “should inspections reveal that to be the case, landowners will be provided with the opportunity to submit a revised ‘Proposed Works Form’.

“The special charge needs to be sufficiently high to act as an incentive for landowners to fulfil their invasive pest control obligations,” the report also states.

“Monies collected by the scheme will be reinvested directly into new initiatives to improve invasive pest management outcomes in SDRC.”

Councillors at the special meeting were informed the new scheme would involve a “significant administrative burden” and in addition to its two current Local Laws officers would require an additional field officer and a vehicle and a dedicated administration officer.

Overall annual costs of running the scheme are estimated at $250,000.

The council is expected to put the plan out for public consultation in coming weeks.

A community survey on the replacement of shelter sheds at Pioneer Park at Swanfels will close on Friday March 31.

The sheds were demolished earlier this year by the council due to termite damage, with many locals angry about a lack of consultation.

A council spokeswoman said a letterbox drop about the survey had been done in the area.

“A notice has also been erected on the park gate, as well as a notice placed in the Southern Free Times.

“Responses in writing are required by 31 March 2017.”

Referring to one such draft, or is it daft meaning foolish, wild, or crazy plan, is to rezone 20 Herbert Street, Allora, which is zoned residential to industrial, is to discard the wise planners of history.

Use of land back then was acceptable, now it is to be forever unacceptable to neighbours whose homes have become their worst ever nightmare.

Unbelievable, unsaleable, and unhealthy with dust of what mix, and endless noise forcing homes to be closed to avoid at least part of someone else’s business!

However, the SDRC have other daft plans for Allora, such

as 800,000 chickens to be hatched weekly on the Dalrymple flood plain. That should finish Allora off!

The intensive animal industries planned for or near Morgan Park would smell great too, especially for the owners of the properties who live hundreds of miles away.

The people of Herbert Street, Allora, who are drowning in dust and noise wish they could be so lucky!!

The SDRC has the power to right the wrongs by their re-zoning choices.

GrainX stays as residential so to encourage the business to relocate to another site and spare misery from the good ratepayers of Herbert Street.

Concerns are mounting over a proposed re-zoning of parcels of land near the Morgan Park motorsport and equestrian facility to allow hazardous and intensive animal industries.

The Southern Downs Regional Council released the proposal on Thursday 16 February as an amendment to the region’s planning scheme, saying it had identified “an area to the southeast of Warwick as suitable for intensive animal industry and special industry”.

Seven privately-owned affected properties are located to the south of Morgan Park with frontages to the WarwickKillarney Road, Old Stanthorpe Road and Morgan Park Road.

The closest parcels are less than two kilometres from the Morgan Park facility and all are well inside the designated Morgan Park “buffer zone”, which extends as far to the south as Wildash School Road.

In a statement released at the time of the re-zoning announcement the council noted that “intensive animal industries include activities such as feedlots, piggeries and poultry farms” and “special industries are industrial activities that have the potential to create significant impacts, examples (including) rendering plants and manufacturing of fertilisers”.

If the amendment is adopted, any applications for those types of industries on the parcels concerned would be assessed by the council’s planning officers and would not require public advertising or a

vote of the councillors.

John Torr, chairman of the Morgan Park User’s Group which represents the various equestrian and motorsport clubs based at Morgan Park - told the Free Times the clubs had been advised to lodge written objections with the council over the planned re-zoning.

“The matter was brought up at our meeting last Friday night and we had a long discussion about it,” Mr Torr said.

“We’ve recommended the groups put in submissions regarding their concerns.

“We believe it would be incompatible to have any intensive animal industries so close to Morgan Park, and other industries could even include the manufacture of explosives.

“Morgan Park is a tourist destination - we’d be very concerned about odours for example from animal industries just a few kilometres down the road drifting across Morgan Park on the prevailing wind.

“It would put visitors off.”

The Free Times has spoken with many of the landowners whose properties are potentially to be affected and they are unanimous in their opposition to the re-zoning plan and will lodge formal submissions with the council.

The owners first found out about the plan when the council wrote to them last month and they and the general community have until Friday 31 March to object.

The Morgan Park “buffer zone” is intended to restrict development which could be

incompatible with events at the complex, including new residential housing.

According to the Morgan Park Masterplan released in 2010 the buffer zone is also intended to disallow “industrial activities ... that may compromise the function of Morgan Park as a place where many residents and visitors may congregate during events”.

“This is particularly so in terms of heavy or noxious and hazardous industry,” the Masterplan states.

The proposed amendment - along with a raft of other amendments around the region - can be viewed at the Warwick council offices on Fitzroy Street.

Other proposed planning amendments currently out for public comment include: Amendments to the flood hazard overlay; Changes to the Warwick Bacon Factory overlay; Rezoning of 20 Herbert Street and 22 South Street, Allora (the GrainX site, proposed to be re-zoned from residential to industry); Implementation of a Carnell Raceway overlay; Proposed changes for motorsport facilities at Carnell Raceway; and Residential uses within one kilometre of an intensive animal industry.

Dance of the chaplains The Warwick and District Chaplaincy Committee will hold a bush dance tomorrow night, Friday 10 March, at the Warwick West State School Hall from 6.30pm.

The famous pig races will be on at the Sandy Creek Pub on Saturday 18 March, with gates open at 1.30pm and racing from 2pm.

Lycoris, very closely related to the nerine, both being members of the Amaryllidaceae family, is native to eastern Asia, mainly China and Japan.

I am no expert so can’t tell the difference between these plants and am inclined to think the yellow ones I spoke of earlier were Lycoris.

As with nerines and belladonnas they like to be planted in well drained gritty soil with their necks exposed.

I certainly won’t discriminate and will be happy to plant either lycoris or nerines in my garden when I find them as they are so easy and hardy.

I will definitely hunt down the yellow one my friend had as even though it will not be from her garden it will remind me of her wonderful friendship over many years.

In a recent column I said that next year I planned on having an extended vegie garden.

Well it is underway!

I had visit from my son and family this week and he has made two beds out of sleepers.

Now I just need to get them aligned exactly where I want them, staple black plastic to the inside of the sleepers to prevent any of the treatment chemicals leaching into my vegie patch, treat the ground with some Earth Life Garden Mate to break up the clay and condition the ground, fill them with soil and they will be ready to fill with plants in the spring! Wonderful!

I also have plans and a position set aside for a compost tumbler and maybe a worm farm. Good things are happening!

Here is the trivia for this week.

According to the most recent study by Dr. Crowther from Yale University, there are three trillion trees on earth. This equates to more than 420 trees for each person!

While this is an astounding number, we continue to remove 15 billion trees per year and only plant five billion.

To maintain the status quo, we would each need to plant two trees.

An old Greek proverb says: “A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they will never sit.”

A recent disappointment in friendship could turn to success. Good financial news arrives when you least expect it. Extra hours of work are offset by unexpected assistance at home.

When I went out to the garden today I was delighted to see the first of the nerines I transplanted from a pot last May, in flower.

I have read somewhere that they like to bake in their dormant phase so they certainly have had ideal conditions this summer!

Like many of the flowers that do well in this area, they are a native to South Africa.

There are 23 species of these mainly autumn flowering bulbs and with careful selection and some persistence and detective work around suppliers, it is possible to have various forms flowering well into winter.

I haven’t been persistent and only have one large clump that I rescued from a garden clean up.

Mine are the common deep pink with the strappy leaves being dark green with a lighter stripe up the centre.

I do know they come in a variety of colours from white through pink to red/orange and are often referred to as Spider Lilies. I plan on trying to find “Alba,” a white variety that will flower in May and “Winter Cheer,” a strong pink that will flower in June and add colour and provide cut flowers when there is little else. An elderly friend in Manilla had a lovely creamy yellow variety that I always meant to get but unfortunately I left my run too late and the house has been sold.

The common name, used mostly in Europe, is the Guernsey lily, and came about because they were found growing wild on Guernsey probably having washed up from shipwrecks.

Nerine is from the sea nymph Nereis and celebrates the same origin. They are a member of the Amaryllis family.

Apparently they can be evergreen, however the ones I have send up the flower spike with no sign of leaves until later.

They grow very much like belladonna lilies (naked ladies) that I also have as rescue plants.

With these particular bulbs I didn’t really know what I had so just put them in pot and waited. I had a nice surprise last week when a stem came up and flowered, so now I need to find a spot where they can remain undisturbed and put them in.

On trips to family in WA, I have seen belladonnas naturalised in large clumps in paddocks beside the road where they look lovely, but are probably considered noxious!

Similarly I have seen common white arum lilies doing very nicely in damp areas in the eastern states and in the west and they are definitely a reportable weed in WA where they were introduced from South Africa as a garden plant.

Once again we are reminded that a weed is only a plant out of place!

Due to significant footpath damage caused by tree roots from four large London Plane trees on Grafton Street, Warwick, Council began a project to install concrete root barriers around the existing trees in September 2016. However, when construction began it quickly became evident that due to the size and quantity of existing roots, the installation of barriers would have been ineffective and left Council no alternative but to remove the trees.

Currently, Council has barricaded off the four locations where the trees have been removed. This is a temporary measure and Council now seeks your input to decide on a permanent solution.

The options are to: 1. Replace with a car park; or 2. Replace with a more suitable tree, with a less invasive root structure.

The Business Network of Warwick (BNoW) held its 20th monthly evening event last Wednesday 1 March, at Chris and Yve Stocks’ newly-refurbished accommodation venture Area 51.

Not to be confused with the highly-secretive US Air Force facility in Nevada, Warwick’s Area 51 is a tastefully renovated and decorated home next the couple’s Pitstop Lodge B&B on Canning Street.

Area 51 offers comfortable accommodation for visitors to Warwick, especially motorsport enthusiasts competing at Morgan Park.

A good crowd of local business people descended on Area 51 to check out the renovations and to make some new networking connections.

BNoW provides a semistructured social networking event on the second Tuesday of each month.

Just as we were all getting excited about the start of the footy season, the Australian cricket team gave fans a reason to fall in love with them all over again after their shock win in the First Test. An extraordinary performance from O’Keefe who many experts doubted should be selected left even the best of the best gobsmacked and the Indians in a spin.

The second Test looked likely to be heading the way of the Aussies when Lyon came up with a career defining performance, but in a feisty Test where tempers on both sides were tested, the Aussies faltered and India squared the ledger. There will be no love lost when the two teams take to the pitch as the caravan moves on to Ranchi next week.

Closer to home, the inaugural Women’s AFL series opened with a bang and is going from strength. Doubters are being converted and the public are loving it. The Brisbane Lions girls are undefeated, and with only a few games to go in the short season are at the top of the standings and hopeful of a finals berth.

If that happens, there is a strong push for the Lions to host the final.

The performance of the ladies side has helped Lions fans also rediscover their love of the Queensland team after several tough years.

Under new coach Chris Fagan and recently anointed captain Dayne Beams, the Lions Men’s side is having its best preseason in many years. It’s enough to put a smile on the face of any Lions fan and may even drag in a few converts.

- Casey UPSETS AND EXCITEMENT IN NRL OPENER Round One of the NRL season is notorious for upsets and there were certainly several last weekend.

Anyone who put a line through the Dragons for the 2017 season is now rethinking their position. And if you wagered on the Panthers to be one of the partners in the big dance, I doubt you are quietly filled with confidence after their performance.

The Hayne plane seems to be in danger of derailing the Titans. Their coach and senior playing group obviously having issues with the nontraining “ego” and the negative press the situation it is attracting.

Roosters fans should have plenty to crow about in 2017 if their round one performance is an indicator.

The Broncos answered their critics in the best way possible with a gritty win over premiers as their coach searches for evidence of his apparent lost “mojo”.

The Tigers look to have their house in order on the paddock, but unfortunately off field issues are keeping them in the headlines this week for the wrong reasons.

Melbourne Storm showed their consistency and you know exactly what you are going to get from this team.

The Bunnies may have imploded before the season gets off the ground with the injury to Inglis and the bizarre decision to leave him on the paddock on one leg. Not sure how their season can benefit from that ridiculous decision.

The Warriors managed a narrow win at home to open their season and those who wrote the Knights off as making up the numbers might also be second guessing after a better performance than many expected.

Parra look to have their house in order scoring a good opening win over the Eagles who had their wings clipped.

The standout game of the round was undoubtedly the Cowboys Raiders game. If that is the benchmark for the 2017 season we are in for a feast of footy and tough tipping issues. There are just no words to describe the performance of JT

John Spiller sent out a reminder of his ability returning a score of 71, one under par and best gross of the day, for nett 65 to claim second place.

Spiller also picked up the pin shots at three and 17 and the pro pin at 9/18.

Mark Hendry held the pro-pin at 1/10 and Bill Pyne at 5/14.

The ladies event was won by Racheal Hendry returning both the best gross of 91 and best nett of 74 for the day. Runner-up was Kay Webb who was one shot back with nett 75.

Putting honours for the day went to Matt Waterworth with 25 putts for his round and in Helen Jones needed only 26 putts for the day to claim a win in the ladies.

Dowie finished with the best round of another good field relegating Bob Watts to the runners-up spot. Luke Reardon finished the round with the best gross.

Honours were shared among the players with Norm Steele and Peter Goodsir figuring in the run downs. Mick Speers claimed the pin shot on the third, while Ian Anderson took home the pro pin and a meat tray, with Ray Thorn the lucky winner of the remaining meat tray.

Preparations are well underway for the popular Maureen Bates Memorial Golf Day. It has

been scheduled for Sunday, 9 April. A two-ball nine hole Ambrose event will be played commencing with a Shotgun Start at 9am. The day will wrap up with a barbecue and multi draw raffle. Golfers should pencil this date into their golfing diaries now.

This Sunday, however, Sporters will hit off at the normal tee off time of 7.30 - 8.30am and visitors are always made to feel welcome.

‘GARRA GOLFERS TOO GOOD It was another busy weekend of golf in Wallangarra. On Saturday, the Monthly Medal and Putting competition sponsored by the Wallangarra Railway was won by Peter Williams, who has been in fair form in recent weeks but on Saturday played one of his best games to score a nett 65.

He topped off a great round and his win by also taking out the putting prize. Brendan McMillan was the runner-up and the Captain’s Stakes was won by Garry Sutcliffe. McMillan and Sutcliffe shared the pins. McMillan held the approach shot at 2/14 and Sutcliffe claimed the ninth.

Once again on Sunday there were plenty of visiting golfers playing in the Wallangarra Open Single Stableford.

Almost an inch of rain fell on Saturday night and with some tricky pin placements the course played long and tough.

Despite the good roll up of players from Tenterfield, Stanthorpe, Warwick and City Golf Club vying for the honours it was the Wallangarra players who led the way in the Men’s event. Steven Hampstead was the overall winner with a score of 37 points. Hampstead also claimed the pin on the 3rd/15th.

Dennis McMeniman was the runner-up and Tony Murphy took the Captain’s Stakes on a countback. Club mate Gary Sutcliffe held the pin shot on the ninth to keep it all in house.

In the Ladies event, it was Stanthorpe golfer Madeleine Jarman who took out the major prize.

Another of the Stanthorpe Ladies, Marg Locke finished runner-up while the Captains Stakes went to Warwick players H. Jones.

The Wallangarra Golf Club would like to thank all those volunteers who once again made Sunday such a successful day. A special thank you to Wendy Williams for her hard work in the lead-up to the event. The efforts of everyone were greatly appreciated.

Local Sport TANNY TWO UNDERWAY The Tannymorel Bowls club hosted round one of the second Tanny Classic on Friday night. The Tanny Classic is once again proving popular with plenty of non-bowling types joining in the fun. Round one winners were Maria McDonald, Gordie Assay and TB who all get five points for the win.

The runners-up Lloyd Johnson, Sue Butz and Grumpy also picked up for points.

There were some interesting results from the evening. The round one winners were too good for their opponents Leonie Rickard, Shep and Brian Walsh winning 17-7.

Lloyd Johnson Sue Butz and Grumot picked up their points for their 10-5 win over Brent Macca, Myrtle and Thommo.

Wayne Petersen, Reba, Venus and Geoff Creighton also had a good win over Jan Walsham, Di Welch, Richy Tartan and Jimbo Rickard - scores finished 15-11.

Mavis Lavardon, Fritzy, Crocodile and Mick O’Leary had a win in a closer game, defeating Brett Grayson, Vic, Lorna and Pete G 10-8.

The fun and frivolity continues this Friday night - if you know anyone who might enjoy a game of bowls, a good laugh and followed up with a great meal Tannymorel is the place.

Last Saturday the second round of the Open Singles was decided. Ron Philps defeated Grumpy 25-7. Geoff Creighton had a 26-16 win over Tuck, and Mick O’Leary downed TB 27-21.

The final of the District pairs was also decided last weekend. Aaron and Dan Sullivan played Banga and Robbie Capelli in the final. In a super game of bowls, the Tanny pairing were defeated 21-18 after pushing their opponents all the way.

POLOCROSSE SEASON AROUND THE CORNER Queensland’s 2017 Polocrosse season will kick off an action-packed program of events in April.

First up for the season, Warwick’s Cunningham Polocrosse Club will host the Cooper Cup against players from New Zealand in conjunction with their annual carnival. This event always showcases the trans-Tasman rivalry with hardfought games.

The Gold Coast Polocrosse Club will hold a multi-horse carnival in Killarney - due to the Coast Club losing their grounds to the Commonwealth Games - as players test their horses to see which is likely to perform best at Warwick the following weekend.

Warwick Polocrosse Club have combined three massive events into the one weekend from Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 April.

A record number of entries for the Barastoc Interstate Series have already been received with teams from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and West Australia going into battle for State pride.

A best-of-three Test Series between South Africa and Australia in both Men’s and Women’s competition will showcase International Polocrosse on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

MEET AND GREET FOR BALLANDEAN The Ballandean Football club will host a meet and greet day and annual sign on day at the Club-

house affectionately known on Saturday from 3pm.

The very informal afternoon will be an opportunity for new and returning players to meet the coaching staff fellow club members and the Ballandean Community.

Several members of the club have been busy over the summer break. Five have completed their Game Training Certificate.

President of the club Neil Newman and director of coaching Anthony Rametta completed a Senior C Class Coaching course overseen by the Queensland State Director of coaching David Abella.

While player numbers look promising this season, there are still places available.

The club will be holding a dinner in the clubhouse following the sign on. (Adults $12, under12s $10).

On the weekend a half century helped his side Colts to a win.

MARYVALE TOP OF THE TABLE Maryvale Condamine has finished at the top of the Warwick Condamine Cricket table and Minor Premiers despite suffering a loss to the Warwick Hotel Colts in the final fixtures game of the season.

Maryvale has had another great season but in recent weeks has shown some vulnerability with back-to-back losses. On Sunday, Colts won the toss and elected to bat first setting up a run chase of 168. Colt’s Lachlan Gross has been one of the most consistent batsmen in the competition all season and top scored in this game with another half century.

In reply, the ladder leaders were dismissed for 122. Pat Bourke was the best of the Maryvale batsman, scoring 36.

Colts captain Shaun O’Leary again led the way with the ball finishing with 3/21. Cameron Peterson also took three wickets while Maugan Benn claimed two scalps.

At the end of the 14 rounds of fixtures the final ladder positions were: A grade: Maryvale 64; Colts 61; Wheatvale 46; Redbacks 45

Reserve Grade: Allora 40; Inglewood 38; Allora Rascals 25; Sovereign 15 The first round of the finals will be played this weekend.

On Sunday, the A Grade finals are 50 over games and players should be at the grounds at 9.30am.

In the major semi-final at Slade, Maryvale and Colts will again go head to head with the winner progressing straight to the grand final game.

WHEATVALE WRAP UP GOOD WIN DefendinG premiers, Wheatvale scored a resounding win in the final fixture game of the 2016/17 season on Saturday and heads to the finals in good form.

In the game played at Slade Oval, Redbacks batted first and set Wheatvale a target of 184.

Coen Slatter impressed with the bat, scoring 60 and Sam Waetford 44 runs. Chris Cantwell (4/20 from overs) headed the bowling figures for Wheatvale.

Wheatvale looked to be in trouble losing early wickets in the innings, but all-rounder Chris Cantwell and Chris Malone took charge and pushed the score to 128 in a much-needed partnership. When Malone was dismissed, Col O’Brien joined Cantwell and the pair had little trouble notching up the remaining runs. Cantwell finished the game 75 not out and his innings was the highlight of the game.

Despite their win, the defending premiers finished the season in third position on the ladder. It means these two teams will face off this weekend in the knockout semi-final at Mayhew Oval on Sunday in what is sure to be a tough 50 overs of top class cricket. The winner of the game will play the loser of the major semi-final in the preliminary final.

RESERVE GRADE FIXTURES WRAP UP Allora and Inglewood head the standings on the Reserve Grade ladder at the end of the fixtures.

Allora finished the season on a winning note, defeating Allora Rascals in Allora.

Rascals batted first and set their opponents a 148-run target. Liam Duncan headed the Rascals batting scores with 40. Jamie Holmes was the best of the rest scoring 22.

The bowling honours were evenly shared among the Allora bowlers.

In reply, Allora lost six wickets in their successful run chase. Bryson finished the innings not out 31 while Petersen top scored with 35.

Sovereign Animals scored a win over Inglewood in their final fixture game.

Inglewood dismissed Sovereign for 77 runs and were well on their way to a victory before rain interrupted the game. Shane Hooper scored a quick fire 50 and the score was 1/68 when play stopped. Inglewood got the points in the game on the back of their run rate.

Inglewood bowler, Nick Campbell, did the brunt of the damage with the ball and finished with figures of 5/11. He was well supported by Jamien Smith who took three wickets. Anthony Nero was the only Sovereign batsman to show any resistance scoring 33 of his team’s 77 runs.

Allora and Inglewood meet in the Reserve Grade major semi-final at Slade on Saturday following the junior finals. Allora Rascals play Sovereign in the knock out semi at Mayhew Oval.

These semi-finals are 40 over games.

DRAGFEST RETURNS Motor racing enthusiasts are revving up for a big weekend at the Warwick Dragway as drag racing makes its return with round 1 of the JP Racing Dragfest Series.

Organisers are pleased with the nominations to date and are expecting visiting drivers from as far away as Mackay and Shellharbour and further afield. There are 20 confirmed drivers coming from the Surfers Paradise Drag Club.

Several Warwick drivers will be flying the local flag including Matt Loy in his Toyota Corona; Ross Costello in his Chev-powered EJ Holden Ute; Glen Loy will drive a twin turbo charged Holden WB Ute and Dennis Glanville is set to thrill in his ET dragster.

Brisbane driver Tim Caswell is always a crowd favourite in his Ford Fairlane. Christine Steffens, ranked the fastest woman drag racer in Australia.

She is a past Dragfest winner and a multi-time Australian champion and is sure to set the pace for her opponents.

Gates open at 8am Saturday with scrutineering from 9am-2pm.

Qualifying will go from 10am-5pm Saturday with round 1 of racing from 5.30-7.30pm. The action continues on Sunday from 9am.

FRIENDSHIP DAY 9 MARCH The Stanthorpe Croquet Club has announced it will host the club’s Annual Friendship Day on Thursday 9 March. The club has brought forward the date this year to avoid clashing with other events. Members of clubs in and around the region will join Stanthorpe players for a social and information day on the court.

Interest in all facets of the game continues to grow. In the association croquet games, Andrea Denkewitz lit up the court with a stunning 26-12 win in her game against Joy Newman and Val Fancourt. Other winners were Margaret Dickenson and Grace Howard.

The best performance of the week among the golf croquet group came from Justin Liddy, who top scored with eight hoops in his first game, and a hole in one in the second game. Visiting player Johnno also top-scored in his first game with eight hoops. Val Fancourt scored an impressive jump shot in her game against John Castles and Shirley Page where she was partnered by Marian Castles.

After a great game partnering Liz Ellway, Justin Liddy scored a 14-5 win over Pauline Inglis and Marian Castles.

The gateball players formed two teams of four when they took to the court later in the week. Andrea Denkewitz headed up the Red team with Pat Schnoor, John Draper and Grace Howard. Their opponents in the White Team were Val Fancourt, Sharyn Roser, Joy Newman and Les Williams.

Game one finished in a 10-all draw. A 'shootout’ (where each player has one shot at the first gate and the team with the most successful passes wins determined the winner) decided the winner.

The Red team were successful winning 4-2.

The White team went on to win the three remaining games.

The gateball players were back on the court again on Saturday, but after one game rain forced play to be abandoned.
