Raising money for Kooweerup’s palliative care service, participants enjoyed a day of activities with a Scottish flair including gumboot throwing, fiddlers and Scottish dancing. The amount raised is still unknown, but Rotary Club of Kooweerup and Lang Lang past President Bruce Thomas said the club was thrilled with the turn-out. The fund-raiser was held at the historic 1860s home of Dr Pat Macwhirter, who generously opens her property to community events once a year. The club thanked Dr Macwhirter for her hospitality.

Growing pains By Bonny Burrows A new suburb has been mooted for Pakenham’s east, to keep up with growing demand. The locality has been named one of 17 new suburbs to be developed across Greater Melbourne growth corridors by the State Government. The government said plans for the Pakenham East Precinct Structure Plan were in “very early” stages, with consultations occurring between Cardinia Shire Council and The Victorian Planning Authority.

Initial ideas for the suburb - bordered by Deep Creek and Ryan Road to the west, Mount Ararat Road to the east and the Princes Freeway to the south - include one main town centre and possibly an additional local centre, up to two sporting field complexes, schools to service community demand and local parks within walking distance of residents. Developed under its Streamlining for Growth program, the government will fast-track Pakenham East suburb’s planning approval process to create quicker subdivision approvals, with

strategic planning support offered to Cardinia Shire Council to clear backlogs that help unlock strategic development sites. Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas said the government was helping make housing more affordable through the supply of lots with good access to jobs, schools, hospitals and public transport. “The increase in supply is also a boost to the construction industry, creating jobs in the growth corridors, as well as in established suburbs,” Mr Pallas said.

Social media feedback from Gazette readers reveals concerns infrastructure won’t keep up with the population growth the new suburb would bring, with calls for better roads and public transport services. But it is understood developers of the new suburb would pay levies to help fund vital infrastructure such as new roads, transport and community facilities, as required under state legislation set last year. State Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the new suburbs would

ensure there was plenty of housing to “suit the varied needs of Victoria families, stay ahead of population growth and make new homes as affordable as possible”. “We have to make the best of land we already have, and our new inclusionary housing pilot will create up to 100 new social housing homes, helping Victorians in need,” Mr Wynne said. The suburb of Pakenham East, yet to be formally named, is expected to be developed over “many years”.

dine global By Cam Lucadou-Wells It’s a tough ask to stand out from the sheer convoy of food trucks that seem to be parked at every event and festival. With food trucks all the rage, the Berwick-based Taj MaTruck has a few stunning points of difference. First, there’s a customised clay tandoor oven - that heats up to 300C inside the truck’s swanky, fully-kitted kitchen. Within its confines, the truck’s two chefs have all they need to create a long menu of authentic Indian and Malaysian food - including thick, fresh cubes of tandoori chicken, spicy paneers, kormas and tikkas as well as butter chicken, nasi goreng, beef rendang and biryani rice dishes. Its festival menu is more focused on easy-to-hold takeaways such as chicken sliders, spring rolls, samosas, naan and masala-laced fries - while the catering menu offers a vast range of dishes. After running a successful childcare centre, Taj MaTruck’s co-founder Sophie Stephens has just gained her truck licence. She said she wanted to start a business a “step above everyone else” in the crowded food truck market. The food truck is cheap to hire for catering, epitomises “free enterprise”, riding on a wave of popularity that started in New York and is convenient. “All you need is yourself. Developer allays asbestos fears A developer has written to assure Berwick residents that a recent dust storm from its construction site was free from asbestos. Moremac Property Group project director Martin Gaedke stated in a letter to residents adjoining the Alira estate that the dust was the result of tree clearing and mulching of trees. “We are aware that there have been some concerns in respect to dust nuisance. “We want to assure you that no materials other than the trees removed have passed through the mulcher.” Mr Gaedke stated there were “small amounts” of asbestos-containing material detected in “various parts” of the Alira site. It was found in fibre cement sheeting of former buildings and in illegally dumped building waste. He wrote that the sites would

be cleared, and any asbestos containing material would be carefully removed in accordance with Environment Protection Authority and WorkSafe regulations. The EPA, WorkSafe and Casey officers inspected the contentious site on Ward Road on 22 February after residents complained in late January. EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias has stated that it rated the risk to the community as low, and would monitor works at the site. Casey Council manager community safety Caroline Bell, in a letter to residents, stated the EPA was satisfied with asbestos removal works to date. Ms Bell stated the EPA would issue a Provisional Improvement Notice to the principal contractor to “formalise the works”. Casey mayor Sam Aziz has launched a covert surveillance operation in the exclusive Berwick Springs estate to catch those erecting placards protesting against a controversial roundabout project. In a further heated step, the council has threatened defamation action against administrators of Berwick Springs Residents Group Facebook site over a post about Cr Aziz on the issue. At the 7 March council meeting, Cr Aziz also shut down six of nine questions on the issue - including requests for him to resign - during public question time. “I’m not going to allow this council chamber to be turned into a circus,” Cr Aziz declared. The council’s covert officers and cameras would be mounted in a bid to prosecute and make an example of a “handful” of offenders who were erecting the signs, he later told Star News. Casey had been collecting and impounding the “illegal” and “misleading” protest signs on public land, at the cost of diverting resources from its graffiti and illegal rubbish dumping crackdown, he said. “I won’t have anarchy in the City of Casey. “We won’t waste ratepayers’ resources from chasing graffiti vandals and illegal rubbish dumpers.” Cr Aziz said that protesting residents, who complained that the project would destroy the estate and its property values, were turning their neighbourhood into a “shanty town” with their signs. Resident spokesman Michael Ball said all current placards were posted on private land since residents had removed a protest sign at the intersection at the council’s request. He said the council had requested a placard on private land to be removed due to its size. “We believe it’s actually smaller than the usual board size. “As long as it’s on private property, you can do what you like.” Mr Ball said the Facebook site administrators removed its sharing of the alleged defamatory post by ‘William Wong’ but hadn’t taken it down from the visitor post section. “People are making comments on our page and we don’t necessarily condone their language or sentiments, but they have the right to express their feelings. “We’re not going to start censoring people.” Mr Ball said the shutting-down of public question time denied residents their only forum to ask questions.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Can Casey’s existing suburbs cope with another two suburbs to share its congested roads, trains and buses? The State Government recently announced fast-tracking of two suburbs for more than 35,000 people in Casey’s south-east. Casey council’s response was that the State Government should first “catch up - then keep up” with the $4.5 billion transport infrastructure gap for existing suburbs. On the council wish-list is $1.2 billion for clogged arterial roads, up to $3 billion for a railway extension to Clyde and $50 million for bus service upgrades. Councillor Wayne Smith said that established suburbs like Doveton and Hampton Park are crying out for “renewal”. He said the backlog of infrastructure needs including inadequate sports facilities, road upgrades and bus links was “overwhelming”. “It’s embarrassing going to some sports facilities here in comparison to those in the new suburbs which have two ovals, massive clubrooms and courts. “In our areas, the planning requirements and the population in those days didn’t warrant it. “Unfortunately they’re land-locked now. There’s physically no room for them to expand.” Mayor Sam Aziz said the state and federal governments needed to “pay attention” to the largest municipality in the state, which is set to grow to by more than 500,000 residents in 25 years. He pushed the case for Casey to be able to charge above the rate-cap because of the growth pressure. “It’s curious that on the one hand the Andrews Government seems to be acknowledging the significant pressures

on growth communities, but on the other robbing residents of vital council infrastructure through rate capping.” Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said a hike in rates was the “last thing” Casey residents wanted. “They want their government to build and improve roads, upgrade our schools and provide the very best healthcare close to home and that’s exactly what the Andrews Labor Government is doing,” she said. Ms Graley said the State Government had created a $100 million Growing Suburbs Fund over the past two years for facilities, community centres and parks in outer suburbs - including $12.4 million in Casey. The government had spent “hundreds of millions” on upgrades to the Monash Freeway, Thompsons Road and the Pound-Shrives roads intersection, and funded a $135 million expansion of Casey Hospital, she said. Ms Graley also pointed to upgrades at Hampton Park Primary School, Strathaird Primary School and Kambrya College. The new Casey suburbs - branded McPherson and Minta Farm - would help boost construction jobs and make housing more affordable, Treasurer Tim Pallas said. Opposition planning spokesman David Davis said the State Government should allocate its “war chest of hundreds of millions of dollars” of Growth Areas Infrastructure Charge and other levies to the growth suburbs. Cr Smith said funding from higher rates as well as federal and state grants was needed for renewal projects in Casey’s older suburbs. “It’s all good to have new suburbs come on-line but I can understand residents asking why aren’t you looking after us? “We’re already here.”

Five Casey sports facilities will share $1 million in state funding towards their upgrades. Casey Indoor Leisure Centre, Strathaird Reserve, Kalora Park Reserve, Sweeney Reserve and Betula Reserve were awarded the grants under the state’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund. Casey Council, which is co-funding the projects, had applied for the grants. The $2.79 million Casey Indoor Leisure Centre redevelopment received a $650,000 injection towards creating a regional gymnastics centre and indoor cricket and soccer courts. Strathaird Reserve received $100,000 towards an $180,000 upgrade of drainage and an irrigation system on oval one. The upgrade will allow the reserve to reach district level AFL and cricket standard. The State Government also contributed $100,000 towards new floodlights at Kalora Park, $100,000 towards Sweeney Reserve’s female friendly amenities and $51,000 towards upgraded drainage at Betula Reserve’s soccer pitch. One of Cranbourneâ€™s newest primary schools welcomed some special visitors to a student leadership assembly. Members of the Melbourne Football Club presented the first batch of school leaders Brodie, Kaiden, Kajal and Hiruni with their badges at the Tulliallan Primary School assembly on Tuesday 28 February. Melbourne Demons football players Colin Garland and Melissa Hickey presented the new school captains with their badges and spoke of their primary school experiences. The school also welcomed other Melbourne players in attendance - Sam Frost, Aaron Vandenberg, Karen Paxman and Sam Weideman - to the assem-

The school's inaugural house captains were also appointed after a visit from local historian Heather Arnold on Tuesday 21 February, who taught the students about the history of the local area. It was from this local knowledge that the students then drew inspiration for their house names based on people and families that owned the land the school now sits on. The four new houses at the school are: Rossiter (red): named for the Rossiter family who owned the property for more than 20 years and were the first official owners. The Rossiter house captains are Farida and Jackson.

Letters Diversity of Casey I’m taking it that there will be subdivision of some land in Casey. Preferably not flood-prone or at foreseeable risk, due to climate change. A lot of successful country areas subdivide land into 1-10 hectare lots, closer to town, and 50-100 hectares further out. These lots can thrive with a great diversity, from goat farmers (cheese, milk, meat and cashmere), to alpacas, donkeys, horses, unusual chooks, unusual sheep, orchards, flowers, market gardens, apiarists with bees, and other diverse produce. Casey could well “bloom" in productive versatile ways with lots of diversification. People would need sheds, machine sheds, rural jobs. Some people would opt for bush blocks with habitat gardens, where at least native birds would visit.

Indeed for hobby farm areas, roads may not need paving straight off. As for the tourism idea, the people who visit Israel do so to visit relatives, or there are a lot who see it as a Holy Land: the infant Jesus was not born and raised in Casey! Israel has long had a drawcard which the City of Casey doesn’t have. I daresay if there were more donkeys and horses, there could well be more stables, and that’s fair comment. Karen Young, Casey.

Sex and China Casey mayor Sam Aziz is on record saying that his planned $25,000 junket to China will provide many economic benefits in future, including jobs growth from Chinese investment in this municipality. Well what kind of jobs growth is Sam Aziz referring to? Does Sam Aziz mean we will see a growth in well-paid apprenticeships and skilled workers? This would be most unlikely I’m afraid. According to “The China Price", written by journalist, author, and editor, Alexandra Harney, we may be more likely to see a growth in low-paid employment and an increase in sex workers in Casey. “Women are an important of deal-making in China, where prostitutes are often part of the entertainment of customers". Furthermore, China’s strategy for achieving high economic growth in the past relied on cheap unskilled labor, not innovation or technology. Former Minister for Science Barry Jones, in “Knowledge Courage Leadership" states that both the ALP and the Coalition believe in the myth that the national budget is just the same as a household budget. This myth is one of the biggest barriers to employment growth in the south-eastern suburbs. It cannot be changed by Chinese investors and council junkets to China. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Lots of sizes In 2007 Casey Council made clear its intention to destroy the Collison Estate in Cranbourne East and replace the existing large, rural residential type, blocks with urban standard residential lots, i.e. small lots similar to the Hunt Club development.

Since then, resident owners have been in limbo, being unable to sell their properties as semi-rural, large, lots because prospective purchasers had no interest due to the risk of neighbours sub-dividing and destroying the ambience of the entire estate. Many owners gave up and sold to speculators whose only interest appears to be making a quick profit for little or no effort. Remaining resident owners have not maintained their properties well because it appeared almost certain to be a waste of money. Casey Council has now informed us (and other submitters – but not all property owners) that the State Planning Minister, Mr Richard Wynne, has approved Amendment C220 to the Casey Planning Scheme, which rezones the Collison Estate to Residential 1 Zone. Casey Council claimed that this amendment would provide certainty to the future of the estate as it apparently allows that estate to be redeveloped for urban standard residential purposes, but that is simply not true because all owners (both speculators and residents) are still in the same state of limbo which has existed since that council, in 2007, first made its intentions known. Council admits that, at present, it is not

financially viable to redevelop the Collison Estate but claims that it will become viable at some (unspecified) time in the future. This claim is akin to the doomsday soothsayers who forecast that the end of the world will come on a specific date. There are a large number of reasons why redevelopment is not, and never likely to be, financially viable. There is a solution to the problem for those speculators who own a Collison Estate property but are not willing to wait for up to 25 years to see any return on their ‘investment’. That is for them to actually live in that property for at least 12 months, so establishing it as their primary place of residence, also to spend that time bringing the house and garden up to scratch, then selling it as a rural-residential type property in the certainty that any profit will be totally free of tax – which certainly would not apply to any profit from subdivision. Fairer sport Warren South will receive upgraded drainage and a new irrigation system with funding for this project being sourced through a partnership between the Victorian Government, Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia. Kalora Park Reserve in Narre Warren North will receive a share of the grant money to upgrade the lighting system at the oval. Huge night of racing fever By Victoria Stone-Meadows Crowds were over the moon to have the Cranbourne Cup returned after it was cancelled in October 2016. 165563

The 2016 Cranbourne Cup was memorably cancelled due to a freak extreme weather event back in October last year, but made a triumphant return to the track on Friday 3 March 2017. In a first for the club, both the harness and thoroughbred Cranbourne Cups were run on the same night. It wasnâ€™t rain but crowds of spectators that flooded the stands for the race where jockey Luke Currie rode five-year-old gelding Master Reset to a $150,000 victory. People came from far and wide to catch the action of a huge night in racing and Star News photographer Rob Carew was there to snap a few Kodak moments.

Warriors’ diamond shine By Russell Bennett The future of Pakenham basketball is shining as bright as a diamond, with three of the Warriors’ junior teams making the prestigious Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League’s (MUVJBL) Victorian Championships. There are a whopping 1290 teams competing each week across the state in the MUVJBL, but there are only 180 that qualify for the Victorian Championship each season. Pakenham’s Under 18 Girls and Under 18 Boys previously qualified through the grading phase, and on Friday night it was the Under 14 Boys’ chance. They had to do it the hard way - rising up through the grading ranks before defeating Sunbury Jets 46-43 on Friday night in the final VJL Crossover clash. Boiling down to one must-win match at the State Basketball Centre, the Warriors had a back-and-forth thriller against Sunbury’s nimble guards. Never more than a handful of points separated the sides as the ball sped up and down the court.

At one stage in the fourth term the Warriors fell behind 35-41, but the hard work of Bradley Pitts, Kynan Auhl and Zachary Mclean pushed the

side right back into it. Pitts pulled down a huge rebound in the last five seconds before getting up the court, receiving the foul and icing

the game with two free throws. Pakenham coach Brett Small was amazed to see his Warriors’ legion shine when it mattered most. “This group of kids, they’re amazing - I lost my voice trying to keep encouraging them to work hard,” Small said. “We were down, we were up ... and these kids just dug deep, never gave up and that’s been the story for us throughout the grading phase. “We started low - we wanted to get challenged early - and we were winning the games fairly comfortably but we wanted to be tested and this was what we got. “We got this challenge game and we’re just so rapt for the boys to get to experience this and for a smallish club to get an Under 14 group into VC, it’s a really good platform for our club moving forward.” Making the Victorian Championship also gives Pakenham a chance to qualify for the 2017 Medibank National Junior Classic tournament, held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium.

Umpiring has been in the blood of Stephanie Girardo for just about her entire life. “My Dad umpires, my brothers, uncles and cousins as well, so family was my main reason for joining,” she said. “I umpired for a while and then played footy for a year. I was no good at playing so got involved in umpiring again. There’s a great sense of accomplishment when you’ve had a good game.” Stephanie said since joining the academy she didn’t have to look far for a role model. “Annie (Mirabile) did the first game of AFL Women’s and she came from the same academy as we did,” she explained. “Jaimie and I were there when she came through and it made us realise that anything is possible ... we can get there. I just love football and I like being involved, I can’t sit on the outside and do nothing, and

being right smack-bang in the middle is the best place to be.” SEJ Umpiring and Female Participation Manager, Rod Hamilton, said the girls are on the right track. “I know they said they don’t have aspirations to go higher, but they’ll reach that level by doing what they’re doing and without even realising,” he said. “They’re umpiring TAC games for the girls over the next month, at Punt Road, at IKON, so they’re already umpiring the best girls in the country.” Hamilton said the opportunity was there for boys and girls from the area to also make their mark. “Our oldest umpire is 83 and we’ll take anyone from 11 up,” he said. It’s no secret that female participation in football is on the rise, but six young umpires from the South East Juniors have blown the whistle on an exciting opportunity that now exists in the sport. For 18-year-olds Sarah Brooks and Aimee Johnston, 19-year-olds Jaimie Collard and Stephanie Girardo, Sarah Vanderschoot, 20, and Jessica Prime, 22, the umpiring world is at their feet after being selected as 20 of the most promising female umpires in the state. All six girls, who started and continue to strut their stuff in the SEJ, have been participating in the AFL Victoria Field Umpiring Academy run by AFL umpire Mat Nicholls at IKON Park. The academy is designed to give the girls the elite training required to take their officiating to the next level. For Jaimie Collard, the progression to the academy started from very humble beginnings. “I was at my brother’s games and just thought I’d get some extra fitness for my netball, and to earn some money on the side was just a bonus,” she said. “I did my first game as boundary umpire when I was 11, it was pouring rain and I got told to just blow my whistle and run. From there it went to field umpiring, and it felt different because all of a sudden you’re in control of the game after watching it for so many years.”

Bulls go on attack By Russell Bennett WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION Cardinia skipper Neil Barfuss has lit a fuse on this weekend’s powder keg match-up between the Bulls and long-time arch rival Kooweerup by stunningly launching a pre-emptive attack on some of the Demons’ biggest guns. This season marks the fourth year in a row that the Bulls and Demons will have met in a final. Staggeringly, since the 2008/09 season, the two powerhouse clubs have met seven times in finals - including this weekend. Four of those clashes were grand finals - three of them going the Demons’ way. That’s not lost on Barfuss. “We’ll be doing what we can to put them off their game - it’ll be good old-fashioned cricket,” he said, adding that his side would target Cooper and in-form quick Jess Mathers, specifically. “I think we match up well with them. “It’d be a shame for them to dominate the season and then bomb out in a semi.” The Bulls will take some patchy form into the contest following their loss to Upper Beaconsfield in Round 14 while the Demons knocked off Tooradin and Mathers finished with 7/40. The Gulls will head to Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham to take on the home side in the other semi, which could well be the closer game but carries far less of the fanfare. “It’s just going to be an exciting contest,” Lions skipper Dom Paynter said. “We’ve had some pretty close games over the past couple of years and both sides have shown patches of their best (throughout this season). “To play our best we just need to be in it for long enough and resist their waves of pressure.”

But on day two, Salerno had his game face on from the get-go. He’d been close to the magical triple figures on a number of occasions for both the Panthers’ first XI and in junior cricket but always found a way

to get out agonisingly close to the milestone. On Saturday, his determination was obvious. Playing a classic opening batsman’s innings, he toughed it out early but continued building and put the foot down when he was set at the crease. Despite his side losing wickets around him - and at one stage sitting on a somewhat precarious 2/33 - Salerno seemingly never lost his composure, playing the lead role before the Panthers were finally dismissed for 305.

Teeing off in the pink on fair sex fairways By David Nagel The fairways of the Pakenham Golf Club are about to turn a bright shade of pink with the club hosting a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia. The Tee-Off for Breast Cancer Research has become an annual event at the club, with many members being touched by the disease.

The 4BBB event is open to Ladies, Men’s and Mixed Pairs combinations keen to test their skills on the tight and tricky layout. The cost is just $20 per pair, with a 9am gathering and 9.30am shotgun start set to open proceedings on Thursday 16 March. Lunch will be available after the round and raffles with pink-themed prizes will be held on the day.

Ladies vice-president Leanne Barker said it was a worthy cause that the club was proud to be a part of. “It’s getting to the stage where everyone has either been touched by cancer, or knows somebody that has,” Barker said. “This whole day has been designed around having fun but at the same time raising funds for a won-

derful cause. We hope to see a lot of new faces, all smiling, and all dressed in pink.” Players with a registered GolfLink handicap wishing to take part in the day can contact the Pakenham Golf Club for more details. The club can arrange a partner for those wishing to enter as a single.
