Casey Central turns new page The new-look Casey Central is celebrating its one year anniversary, with shoppers invited to celebrate the special occasion with a variety of activities and promotions taking place this March. Since its re-launch, Casey Central has spent the past year transforming itself into an affordable shopping destination. “Maybe I should turn up to the next council meeting in boots with zips on them.” Cr Aziz said the complainant was “distraught” and “afraid” after being “cornered” outside in the car park alone by Cr Beardon. The mayor said Cr Beardon allegedly said some “really ugly things about his colleagues, especially female councillors”. “He’s probably breached the entire code,” Cr Aziz said. “He shouldn’t go for people who are vulnerable and unable to fight back. “If he had to have a go at anyone, he should have gone at me. I’m the mayor and the one who initiated this (reprimand) action.” In the reprimand motion, Cr Beardon’s criticisms of the chaplaincy proposal were described as “pre-emptive” given council officers had yet to finalise their report on the matter. He was also condemned for “outright lies” and a “malicious personal attack” on Cr Aziz in a Star News article on the disbanding of the council’s Access and Inclusion committee in February. Cr Beardon had then told Star News that “Cr Aziz certainly didn’t speak for me or for most councillors on inclusion issues” and that the mayor “needs to understand that some councillors are trying to build bridges”. “What hurts me is when elected people aren’t welcoming,” Cr Beardon then said. “That’s the direction Australia doesn’t want to go.” Continued on page 3

Casey council has launched two parallel investigations against Cr Steve Beardon after an alleged heated argument with a female councillor outside after a council meeting. Earlier, in an extraordinarily dramatic Casey council meeting on 7 March, Mayor Sam Aziz had led a formal reprimand against Cr Beardon for publicly criticising the mayor and the council’s chaplaincy proposal. In the reprimand motion on 7 March, Cr Beardon was condemned “in the strongest possible terms” for “ignorant, ill-informed, biased, inappropriate and factually incorrect comments” made to the media. Earlier in the meeting, Cr Beardon was ejected from the chamber for 15 minutes by the mayor. And in a further sequel, Casey has launched a Code of Conduct and an occupational health-andsafety investigation against Cr Beardon over the incident with a female councillor after the meeting. Cr Beardon said he had “nothing to worry” about the incident, challenging Casey to release video footage. He said the complaining councillor had just been “abusing” a male councillor when he “questioned’ her about why he should apologise to Cr Rosalie’s Crestani for taking issue with her Rise Up Australia membership. “If I turn up with my shoelaces undone, they’d breach me for a Code of Conduct,” Cr Beardon said.

Clyde’s slow superhighway By Victoria Stone-Meadows Residents of Belmond on Clyde will receive satellite phones in lieu of a massively delayed NBN connection and nearly non-existent mobile phone reception. Households at the new Belmond Estate have been waiting for telecommunications services to be installed for months. When residents first started to move into the estate late last year, they were told NBN Co would have their phone and internet switched on by 1 December 2016. However, that date has been continually pushed back with residents now being told they can expect to have fixed line telecommunications in the estate by 8 May 2017. Development Manager with Belmond Wendy Scroggie said that NBN Co signed off on the developer’s obligations for site accesses in May 2016, with work not beginning on connecting the service inside the estate until January 2017. “As the developer, we entered into a contract with NBN Co to have the service rolled out through the estate; to do this we need to install a pit and pipe network within the subdivision,” she said. “The developer had these requirements we needed to meet and once the works were complete, then the NBN would roll through.” “Stage one, two and three were signed off by NBN Co in May 2016 that we had met these requirements.” Despite the sign-off in May and the promise of connected telecommunications to the estate in December, not one resident of Belmond has an active fixed phone or internet connection. Jenny was one of the first residents to move into the estate in early November 2016 and has since been petitioning the other residents and leading the charge to get phone and internet in the estate. “We currently have no mobile reception, no landline, and no internet; it’s a black hole of communications as everyone here can attest to.” “We have had a number of emer-
Residents of Belmond on Clyde along with Holt MP Anthony Byrne are calling for telecommunication services they were promised months ago. 165794 Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS gencies in the estate where people have been unable to call out in case of an emergency, people have lost business opportunities, people have small businesses and are unable to do anything from home; it’s having a big effect on people’s income not to mention if something did happen we can’t contact emergency services.” Peter is a chauffeur who said he had lost thousands of dollars in missed business opportunities since moving into the estate on 20 February 2017. “Every night I get work emails but because I don’t get signals coming through saying there is mail, I have to go down road to open my emails and by the time I’ve done that, the work has been allocated to someone else,” he said. Janine runs a cleaning company as a transport business and cannot do her weekly invoicing from home and it has cost her business both time and money since moving in on 12 January 2017. “The invoicing program takes a
long time if I can get online at all and it’s hard to get into it; a lot of the time it won’t run because there is not enough service,” she said. Prabhu moved into the estate on 23 November 2016 with his young twins and then pregnant wife and has found having no telecommunication services to be an awful experience. “There was an instance she had to get an appointment at the hospital and I was working and she was by herself,” he said. “It was just a routine appointment but trying to get a taxi was really difficult and once we got the taxi, we couldn’t tell the driver directions.” MP for La Trobe Anthony Byrne has been working with households in the estate to help get them connected but said it wasn’t until they protested in the streets that they were heard. “It’s 2017 and we have a really nice group of people who buy into a lifestyle and a future and they don’t have a phone or internet, and they don't have
mobile phone access, it’s just unbelievable,” he said. Mr Byrne said his office had been in contact with NBN Co and Telstra constantly since the issue was bought to his attention, but it was the power of the people that has moved them along. “A group of people have got together and now we are making it possible and working with them,” he said. “The fact of the matter is if it is happening here it is probably happening somewhere else too. Why did people have to protest in the streets to get something they were promised on the first of December?” “They shouldn’t have to subject themselves to the public spotlight to make this happen. People are entitled to a service they are told would be provided.” NBN Co Victorian spokesperson Michael Moore said the delays in connecting the service to the estate stemmed from works outside the estate boundary.
“Delays in connecting NBN services at Belmond Estate in Clyde have been due to design delays and construction challenges relating to the 7.8-kilometre fibre haul required for connection,” he said. “We have also encountered some blockages during the fibre haul that were related to roadworks.” NBN Co has apologised to residents for the frustration and inconvenience this has caused and assured them that their connection has been prioritised. Residents, Anthony Byrne and the developer have also been in contact with Telstra to rectify the lack of mobile phone coverage. While the residents are pushing for a new mobile tower to provide reception to the estate, Telstra have offered satellite phones to all residents until a more permanent solution can be achieved. Telstra was contacted for comment, without success.

Cr Beardon said he’d continue to “speak out” on issues even if he risked being suspended from the council for two weeks. He said by speaking up, he’d made the community aware of issues like the council’s China trip and the cost of the chaplaincy program.

Cr Beardon later said it was in context of him being “condescending
back“ to the chaplain, who was trying to “educate" him on Christianity. The moves followed a fiery debate over Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani raising an urgent motion for the council to hold discussions with the Israeli city Ofakim for a possible sister-city relationship. In dissent, Cr Beardon said Israel seemed to be an “unusual” destination for the council to reach out. “I can surmise it’s to do with reli-

With food trucks all the rage, the Berwick-based Taj MaTruck has a few stunning points of difference. First, there’s a customised clay tandoor oven - that heats up to 300C inside the truck’s swanky, fully-kitted kitchen. Within its confines, the truck’s two chefs have all they need to create a long menu of authentic Indian and Malaysian food - including thick, fresh cubes of tandoori chicken, spicy paneers, kormas and tikkas as well as butter chicken, nasi goreng, beef rendang and biryani rice dishes. Its festival menu is more focused on easy-to-hold takeaways such as chicken sliders, spring rolls, samosas, naan and masala-laced fries - while the catering menu offers a vast range of dishes. After running a successful childcare centre, Taj MaTruck’s co-founder Sophie Stephens has just gained her truck licence. She said she wanted to start a business a “step above everyone else” in the crowded food truck market. framework for foreign investment and it is heavily regulated.” Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said it is not unusual for local governments to take overseas trips but it must have something to show for it. “A well organised trade mission can help generate local jobs,” she said. “Casey must ensure they show residents the benefits of such a trip.” Councillor Steve Beardon said it would be very diffuclt for Cr Aziz and Cr Smith to demonstrate the economic benefit to Casey of such as trip. “If China want to undercut our
market they can just lower the price of their dollar in so doing they are decimating our industry,” he said. “Also, until they have fixed labour costs, child labour, and OHS protections I will not support doing business with them.” Cr Beardon said a city the size of Casey cannot offer the necessary subsidies and business conditions to attract the investing power of similar sized cities in China. “They won’t be investing in the City of Casey because we don’t have the economy on the scale they have,” he said.

City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz is “not afraid of foreigners owning Australian assets” and has stood by his decision to travel to China in a bid to attract international investment in the Casey municipality. Cr Aziz took to his Facebook page following a spray from 3AW radio host Tom Elliot on Wednesday 1 March, who questioned the validity of the $25,000 trip for Cr Aziz, Cr Wayne Smith and two Casey Council officers. “I make no apology for pro-actively seeking investment in our community - whether that be from the State Government, Federal Government or business,” Cr Aziz wrote in the social media post. “It is absolutely council’s role to seek this investment in our community which is crying out for jobs and infrastructure. If council doesn’t, who else will?” The plan to send a Casey Council delegation to China to build economic partnerships between Casey and Chinese cities was floated in December 2016. Councillors Steve Beardon, Rex Flannery and Tim Jackson were in opposition to the trip in December but the motion was passed on the majority vote. Cr Aziz went on a similar trip to China in 2013 when he was deputy mayor and said it would be remiss of Casey Council not to explore international business and infrastructure opportunities. “I am very sure of my objectives and that is to attest investment and that will generate jobs in Casey,” he said, “If we weren’t thinking along those lines we would be negligent because at the moment 7 out of 10 ratepayers leave the city to go to work and that is

Letters Diversity of Casey I’m taking it that there will be subdivision of some land in Casey. Preferably not flood-prone or at foreseeable risk, due to climate change. A lot of successful country areas subdivide land into 1-10 hectare lots, closer to town, and 50-100 hectares further out. These lots can thrive with a great diversity, from goat farmers (cheese, milk, meat and cashmere), to alpacas, donkeys, horses, unusual chooks, unusual sheep, orchards, flowers, market gardens, apiarists with bees, and other diverse produce. Casey could well “bloom" in productive versatile ways with lots of diversification. People would need sheds, machine sheds, rural jobs. Some people would opt for bush blocks with habitat gardens, where at least native birds would visit. This gives work to snake catchers too. I agree the vision of Casey needs to not be just more suburban blocks, more roads, more traffic, more peak hour commuters, slower traffic and so on. Indeed for hobby farm areas, roads may not need paving straight off. As for the tourism idea, the people who visit Israel do so to visit relatives, or there are a lot who see it as a Holy Land: the infant Jesus was not born and raised in Casey! Israel has long had a drawcard which the City of Casey doesn’t have. I daresay if there were more donkeys and horses, there could well be more stables, and that’s fair comment. Karen Young, Casey.
Sex and China Casey mayor Sam Aziz is on record saying that his planned $25,000 junket to China will provide many economic benefits in future, including jobs growth from Chinese investment in this municipality. Well what kind of jobs growth is Sam Aziz referring to? Does Sam Aziz mean we will see a growth in well-paid apprenticeships and skilled workers? This would be most unlikely I’m afraid. According to “The China Price", written by journalist, author, and editor, Alexandra Harney, we may be more likely to see a growth in low-paid employment and an increase in sex workers in Casey. “Women are an important of deal-making in China, where prostitutes are often part of the entertainment of customers". Furthermore, China’s strategy for achieving high economic growth in the past relied on cheap unskilled labor, not innovation or technology. Former Minister for Science Barry Jones, in “Knowledge Courage Leadership" states that both the ALP and the Coalition believe in the myth that the national budget is just the same as a household budget. This myth is one of the biggest barriers to employment growth in the south-eastern suburbs. It cannot be changed by Chinese investors and council junkets to China. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Lots of sizes In 2007 Casey Council made clear its intention to destroy the Collison Estate in Cranbourne East and replace the existing large, rural residential type, blocks with urban standard residential lots, i.e. small lots similar to the Hunt Club development. Since then, resident owners have been in limbo, being unable to sell their properties as semi-rural, large, lots because prospective purchasers had no interest due to the risk of neighbours sub-dividing and destroying the ambience of the entire estate. Many owners gave up and sold to speculators whose only interest appears to be making a quick profit for little or no effort. Remaining resident owners have not maintained their properties well because it appeared almost certain to be a waste of money. Casey Council has now informed us (and other submitters – but not all property owners) that the State Planning Minister, Mr Richard Wynne, has approved Amendment C220 to the Casey Planning Scheme, which rezones the Collison Estate to Residential 1 Zone. Casey Council claimed that this amendment would provide certainty to the future of the estate as it apparently allows that estate to be redeveloped for urban standard residential purposes, but that is simply not true because all owners (both speculators and residents) are still in the same state of limbo which has existed since that council, in 2007, first made its intentions known. Council admits that, at present, it is not financially viable to redevelop the Collison Estate but claims that it will become viable at some (unspecified) time in the future. This claim is akin to the doomsday soothsayers who forecast that the end of the world will come on a specific date. There are a large number of reasons why redevelopment is not, and never likely to be, financially viable. There is a solution to the problem for those speculators who own a Collison Estate property but are not willing to wait for up to 25 years to see any return on their ‘investment’. That is for them to actually live in that property for at least 12 months, so establishing it as their primary place of residence, also to spend that time bringing the house and garden up to scratch, then selling it as a ruralresidential type property in the certainty that any profit will be totally free of tax – which certainly would not apply to any profit from subdivision. Socially speaking Earlier this week the News published a story about the Rails Future Institute calling for the State Government to plan for an investigation into an extension of the Cranbourne rail line to Clyde. In the story, Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said there were other transport infrastructure projects that took precedence over an exztraion of the Cranbourne rail line. The current timeline for such an extension according to Public Transport Victoria is up to 30 years in the future. Here is how you reacted to the news: Luke Martin: More pressing? OK maybe so, but do those more pressing issues include the duplication of the Cranbourne line? If this was in Jacinta Allen’s electorate it would be top of the list. Her idea of more pressing matters is a re-design of stations in her local area; wouldn’t have thought that would be top of the “pressing matters“ list? Would have thought getting people to work on time and servicing the every overflowing area of the city of Casey would trump a station re-design? Judy Davis: They like that our area is expanding but not prepared to help the area with an extended rail line. In 10-15 years, imagine how far out our growth will be. They should be looking at least 20

years ahead and our line should already be out to Clyde with dual carriageway. Bail refused after crash By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren South man has been refused bail after being accused of nearly running over a pedestrian in a Cranbourne hotel car park at high speed while evading police. After his arrest, Michael Shane Hawkins allegedly called a police officer a “f***ing c**khead” at the end of an allegedly non-remorseful interview, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. “You have such an appalling attitude,” said magistrate Jack Vandersteen, who noted Hawkins’ bail had been extended by a court six days before the “very dangerous” incident. Police in an unmarked car had tried to intercept the disqualified Hawkins in an unregistered Club Sport Holden in the Settlement Hotel car park about
11.45am on 28 February, the court was told. Instead of obeying police directions, Hawkins allegedly reversed the vehicle from a parking bay at speed and rapidly accelerated away from the officers. The vehicle allegedly missed a pedestrian narrowly as it sped out of the driveway and - without stopping pulled out across four lanes of South Gippsland Highway lunch-hour traffic. The sedan mounted the highway’s median strip as Hawkins escaped. Six days before the incident, Hawkins had been bailed on eight charges of burglary, theft and handling stolen goods. He had already been on bail and a community corrections order with ju-
dicial monitoring. Sgt Delaney said Hawkins had an extensive criminal history including drugs, offensive weapons, trafficking meth and drug-driving. In applying for bail, defence lawyer Adrian Dessi said Hawkins was relatively young, had never been previously imprisoned and had no priors for dangerous driving or driving unlicensed. Mr Dessi argued Hawkins was seeking treatment for his bi-polar “impulsivity”, had attended correctionsorder appointments and had not broken his night curfew. A close relative told the court he could disable the Club Sport vehicle to stop Hawkins driving it. He said that Hawkins was “a kid
trying to get his life where it should be” but had been damaged by past ice use. “That’s a battle. We can see he’s trying to get on top of these things and get them behind him. “You’re not your own person when you’re on that stuff.” The relative said Hawkins was a hard-worker but since police confiscated all his tools - including allegedly stolen ones - he didn’t have the means to repay his debts. “What’s probably happened is he’s got the gambling bug heavily because he doesn’t have the money and the ability to repay money any more. “He’s probably the hardest worker I’ve ever met. He doesn’t stop for lunch.”
Mr Vandersteen said Hawkins’ alleged offending had escalated into burglaries and dangerous driving since being put on a corrections order in October. He said Hawkins had “never properly committed” to a court order since his first corrections order in 2012. “Most of what you need is already in place and you continue to re-offend. “You were not to drive a motor vehicle, and your driving is at the highend of a reckless conduct charge.” Mr Vandersteen said Hawkins was a danger to the public if released, and had failed to show cause for bail. The accused was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 27 March.

Demons help to lead By Victoria Stone-Meadows One of Cranbourne’s newest primary schools welcomed some special visitors to a student leadership assembly. Members of the Melbourne Football Club presented the first batch of school leaders Brodie, Kaiden, Kajal and Hiruni with their badges at the Tulliallan Primary School assembly on Tuesday 28 February. Melbourne Demons football players Colin Garland and Melissa Hickey presented the new school captains with their badges and spoke of their primary school experiences.
The school also welcomed other Melbourne players in attendance Sam Frost, Aaron Vandenberg, Karen Paxman and Sam Weideman - to the assembly to meet the first students at the school. The school's inaugural house captains were also appointed after a visit from local historian Heather Arnold on Tuesday 21 February, who taught the students about the history of the local area. It was from this local knowledge that the students then drew inspiration for their house names based on
people and families that owned the land the school now sits on. The four new houses at the school are: Rossiter (red): named for the Rossiter family who owned the property for more than 20 years and were the first official owners. The Rossiter house captains are Farida and Jackson. Mitchell (blue): named for George Mitchell who decided on the name of Tulliallan based on it being the name of his parent’s home in Williamstown. Mr Mitchell’s father James
was also on the committee that chose the design for the Australian flag. The Mitchell house captains are Zara and William. Elder (yellow): named for the Elder family who owned the property now occupied by the school for longer than anyone else. Elder house captains are Jyothika and Dawoud. Strettle (green): named for the Strettle family who lived on the land for more than 20 years and purchased additional land to expand the size of the property. Strettle house captains are Heart and Xavier.
The Public Transport Minister has shot down renewed calls for a Cranbourne to Clyde rail line extension. The discussion surrounding a rail extension from Cranbourne to Clyde has been raised again in the form of a budget submission from Rail Futures. The non-profit independent group will submit a report to the State Government for budgetary consideration that calls for $2 million to be allocated for planning and design of an extension. While the group is calling for the extension, it acknowledges that there are limitations to extending the Cranbourne Rail Line. “This project is complicated by the proximity of the South Gippsland Highway to the present Cranbourne station and is likely to involve a significant planning study to determine the optimum solution at this location,” the budget submission read. Public Transport Victoria’s 2013 Network Development Plan outlines an extension of the Cranbourne line to Clyde was earmarked to begin in about 20 to 30 years. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has said there were more pressing public transport infrastructure projects that needed considering. “Infrastructure Victoria’s recommends the extension of the Cranbourne line to Clyde in the next 10 to 15 years - after the Metro Tunnel is built, new high capacity trains are running and every level crossing between Dandenong and the city is removed,” she said. “We’re getting on with these massive projects, which will create space for more services, more often on the CranbournePakenham line and enable its extension in the future.” “Last year we introduced a new Cranbourne bus network, including a new route 796 to Clyde, and we will continue to improve public transport in the south-east and across Victoria, to get people home safer and sooner.”

The $660 million upgrades will cause disruptions to services along the south-east rail corridor during April, with buses to replace trains while the upgrades are underway. Member for Eastern Victo-
ria Daniel Mulino visited the construction site of the new train depot in Pakenham on Friday 18 February to inspect the works underway. The new depot will include a maintenance facility, high-tech simulator and stabling for up to 30 of the 65 new high-capacity metro trains. The construction of the depot will also support local business with 87 per cent local materials going into the project and 100 ongoing local jobs when complete. Apprentices and trainees will form 15 per cent of the workforce, and a further seven per cent will be disadvantaged workers; addressing unemployment and skills shortages in the south-east.
Mr Mulino said the upgrade works to the train lines would be a boon for the Pakenham and surrounding areas. “This new depot is a huge win for Pakenham, and will support bigger trains and better services right along the Cranbourne-Pakenham line,” he said. “It will provide work, skills and opportunities for hundreds of people, and help thousands more get home safer and sooner.” Platforms at 13 existing stations along the Pakenham and Cranbourne train lines will be extended to accommodate the new high-capacity trains. The upgrades will also see 70 kilometres of overhead power lines rebuilt.

Casey councillor Geoff Ablett and community members from Warneet are kicking up a stink over the state of the toilets at the Warneet Boat Ramp. Alan Sandford, of Al’s Bait and Tackle, operates his business just metres from the boat ramp and says a lack of up-to-date toilet facilities is causing headaches for patrons of the area. “We’ve got a lot of kids and women that come down here in the park and on the piers or out on boats and they get back to the ramp and are racing around looking for a toilet,” he said. “It’s that far away they are struggling to make it, if you know what I mean.” He said the current toilet facilities have been there for many years and had not been upgraded since they were built. “They are very outdated and a far away from boat ramp and car park,” he said. “There is no lighting and no proper disabled access for disabled people down here - we have groups bringing buses down to have a picnic but struggling to find toilets to accommodate them.” While Cr Ablett has promised to fix the issue, he said the land the toilet sits on is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and not the council. “I think DELWP should construct the toilet as it is on their land and the lack of a toilet, including disability use, creates a huge hygiene and safety problem that people should not have to endure,” he said. “It does not meet the needs of Occupational Health and Safety Stan-

The Warneet Foreshore Reserve Committee of Management manage the land surrounding the boat ramp in behalf of DELWP and say they were aware of the issues surrounding the toilet block. “The committee have spoken with the City of Casey regarding this issue, the response was that there was proof required that disabled facilities were required,” a spokesperson for the committee said. “To upgrade the current facilities would require a large grant or City of Casey footing the bill as the committee do not have the funds required to upgrade the toilet blocks.” Rod Anderson, Regional Manager, Land, Planning and Approvals for DELWP, said they had not had correspondence from Casey Council, the fishing club or the foreshore reserve committee about the toilets. “There are currently no plans to upgrade that toilet facility and DELWP has not been contacted about the toilets,” Mr Anderson said.

Scouts’ pleas for hall help By Victoria Stone-Meadows The first Cranbourne Scouts are seeking engagement from the community to assist them in saving their Scout Hall. The hall was established in the mid’60s and has not has any major upgrades since its construction. Jenni Walden, Group Leader of the Cranbourne Scouts, said there is a lot of work that needs to be done to the hall and she would love to have the Cranbourne community come together to fix it up. “The hall needs a lot of things replaced because it has had no major work done for a long time and we want to get the community involved rather than just asking for money,” she said. “Not just to fundraise for us either, but to harness the skills of others in the community and other groups to help.” Ms Walden said the idea behind the Save our Scout Hall campaign was to bring the Cranbourne Scouts and the wider community closer together by sharing the project of fixing up the hall. “We want it to be a community project and really make it for the community,” she said. “We know that we have the backing of Scouts Victoria but the aim of the campaign is to make it a community project and a venture that benefits the whole community.” While the hall is still usable, there are a lot of upgrades it needs to bring it into the 21st century and bring it up to modern standards, she said. “We don’t have disability access or amenities, and we want to fix that so we can be inclusive to all potential scouts and hall hires as well,” Ms Walden said. “We also need to fix security issues such as installing better doors, replacing louvre windows, and the fencing is in disrepair. “Also, with the age of the hall, the roof needs repairing, lights need to be replaced, it needs a paint job, the floor needs to be resurfaced, and some of the internal doors are bust.” While fixing up the hall would be of great befit to the scouts that currently meet there, Ms Walden said there

Grants providing a sporting chance for the fairer sex By Victoria Stone-Meadows Sweeney Reserve in Berwick will be one of the first sports grounds in Casey to have purpose-built female-friendly change rooms and amenities thanks to the grant money from the State Government. The new change rooms and amenities are being provided as part of Casey Council’s strategy to encourage a wider participation of women in sport and recreation.
Five sporting facilities across Casey are set for a boost after Casey Council revealed it had been successful in the $1 million grant application. The Casey Indoor Leisure Centre in Cranbourne will receive a share of the grant money to continue ongoing refurbishment works. Strathaird Reserve in Narre Warren South will receive upgraded drainage and a new irrigation system with funding for this project being sourced through a partnership between the Vic-
torian Government, Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia. Kalora Park Reserve in Narre Warren North will receive a share of the grant money to upgrade the lighting system at the oval. Betula Reserve in Doveton will also have a share in the grant money with drainage upgrades to soccer pitches bringing them in line with LFDP Facility Development Standards. The funding made possible through
the State Government’s the 2017/18 Community Sports Infrastructure Fund will be used to upgrade sporting grounds and amenities throughout the municipality. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said this funding has allowed council to better provide the necessary amenaties to the growing population of the area and to cater for the increase in sport participation. “These projects will deliver many benefits from allowing Narre Warren
cricket and junior football clubs to introduce programs and teams for girls and women and making way for 1500 new gymnastics participants to giving a number of local soccer, cricket and AFL clubs improved surfaces to use all year round,” he said. “As our population grows, we hope the State Government will continue to invest in new and existing infrastructure in Casey to keep up with the increased demand.”

The 2016 Cranbourne Cup was memorably cancelled due to a freak extreme weather event back in October last year, but made a triumphant return to the track on Friday 3 March 2017. In a first for the club, both the harness and thoroughbred Cranbourne Cups were run on the same night. It wasn’t rain but crowds of spectators that flooded the stands for the race where jockey Luke Currie rode five-year-old gelding Master Reset to a $150,000 victory. People came from far and wide to catch the action of a huge night in racing and Star News photographer Rob Carew was there to snap a few Kodak moments.

Feat of the feet in a cancer fight By Bonny Burrows The “hugely successful” Casey Relay for Life 2017 has so far raised more than $303,000 for cancer research. Held at the weekend at Berwick’s Akoonah Park, the annual Cancer Council fund-raiser united more than 3500 community members for a 24-hour team relay featuring a string of commemorative events along the way. Committee chairwoman Donna Harrison said the relay provided all those touched by the insidious disease with inner strength. “The strength, courage, emotion and support that Relay for Life gives you is nothing short of empowering you to stay strong, as you don’t know how strong you are until that is all you have,” Ms Harrison said. The atmosphere was “fun, emotional and inspiring”, Ms Harrison said, with the rising donations tally topping off a successful event. “This is one of the highest on the day totals for Casey Relay - an inspirational effort by all teams and participants within the Casey community,” she said. Currie’s win aboard the Matt Laurie-trained five-year-old gelding was the precursor to a stunning day at Flemington, with wins aboard Hey Doc in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) and Big Memory in the Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) putting him firmly in the spotlight. And it’s not the first time Currie has used Cranbourne as a launching pad as he explained after Friday night’s triumph. “It’s always nice to go into a big day like tomorrow with a good chance (Hey Doc), and with my first group one winner I rode a treble here (Cranbourne) the day before, so hopefully it’s a good omen,” Currie crystal-balled before explaining the key to Master Reset’s success. “He puts himself into a nice spot but he’s a little bit awkward to ride out,” he said. “He sort of lies in and gets his head right out and down, he can be a bit tough to ride out but he’s nice through the race.” Currie stalked the leaders in fourth place before making his move on the turn. “He’s probably better suited when he’s in front and putting them to the sword a little bit, but off that good tempo he had to sit back off them,” he said. “They quickened around the bend and I had him chasing a little bit but he keeps picking up and picking up.” Master Reset has now won nine of his 25 starts and is building a nice collection of silverware. The country cups specialist added the Cranbourne Cup to wins at Wodonga and in the Peninsula Cup at Mornington. Fracture puts a strain on Bogut’s big break By Russell Bennett Endeavour Hills product Andrew Bogut was set to get the chance to become the first Aussie in history to win NBA championships with two different franchises ... . until fate intervened. It seems like just yesterday that LeBron James held the Larry O’Brien trophy aloft for the first time as a Cleveland Cavalier, and Bogut had the chance to do the same but on Tuesday - less than a minute into his first game with the franchise - he suffered a fractured tibia in a freak clash of legs. The seven-footer had signed with Cleveland, the great modern-day rival of his former franchise, the Golden State Warriors after clearing waivers
following his buy-out from the Philadelphia 76ers. It had already been an actionpacked period for Bogut, too, since being a part of the Warriors franchise that relinquished a 3-1 NBA Finals lead to go down to the Cavaliers in seven games - handing long-suffering Cleveland fans their first major sporting title of any description in 52 years. Bogut was then a key component of the Golden State trade with the Dallas Mavericks that helped the bay area franchise free up enough salary cap space to sign MVP-winning superstar Kevin Durant to become part of a threeheaded monster with ‘Splash Brothers’ Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
It became clear early on that Bogut was a kind of square peg in a round hole in Dallas, but the former number one overall pick earned rave reviews from renowned Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle for doing everything possible in the best interests of the franchise. When the Mavs started to slump badly, Bogut even famously suggested he should come off the bench as Dirk Nowitzki’s back-up - rather than partner the Dallas legend in the starting front court. The Aussie big man has always had a selfless, team-first mentality and it’s what made him such a key component of the Warriors team that won the 2015 title - that time over James’s Cavaliers.
But now Bogut, 32, will be moving heaven and earth - racing against the clock - in an unlikely bid to be fit for the playoffs and a potential finals match-up against the likes of Curry, Durant and Thompson. Dallas recently traded him to the 76ers in a trade involving highly-touted young big man Nerlens Noel. Bogut’s management then negotiated a buyout with the rebuilding Philadelphia and did so before 1 March - allowing the former Dandenong Ranger to be playoff-eligible for a new team. New-look finals action By Russell Bennett DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 11 (One Day) Three of last season’s top four sides have officially been bundled out of the DDCA Turf 1 finals race in an astonishing close to the 2016/17 home-andaway season. Powerhouse clubs Springvale South, Cranbourne, and Berwick have all found themselves on the outside looking in after Round 11 action on Saturday. Cranbourne, in particular, has some genuine soul searching to do and some home truths to realise - closing out its season with no points from its final three rounds and just one victory since Round 5. The 2015/16 premier could only muster 160 from its 40 overs after being sent in by Mordialloc at Casey Fields. Eagles openers Lucas Ligt (0) and Brandon Tyzzer (9) both fell cheaply to Mordialloc young gun opener Jakob Woinarski (3/45), bringing about yet another rescue mission from superstar all-rounders Steve Spoljaric and Matt Chasemore. The two have been relied upon particularly heavily all season perhaps too much so - and this time their mission proved a bridge too far as they were both removed after strong starts - Spoljaric for a near run-a-ball 41 and Chasemore, finally, for 61 after holding the innings together. Disappointingly for Cranbourne, Jake Harrington (22) was the side’s only other batsman to reach double figures as Chathura Athukorala and Ian Daniel claimed 4/39 and 2/16 respectively.

DDCA TURF 1 PREVIEW - SEMI-FINALS Hallam-Kalora Park will look to rubber stamp an amazing climb up the ranks of the DDCA Turf 1 competition when it takes on Mordialloc in this weekend’s major semi-final at Hallam. The top-of-the-table Hawks will take part in their first finals series since 2010, an adventure that fell one step short of glory in the season-decider against Buckley Ridges. A string of mid-to-lower finishes since then has given no indication of the Hawks' rapid rise to prominence this season. Two remaining members of that run through to the 2010 grand final, Corey and Leigh Booth, have been joined by a string of all-rounders all keen to make their mark. Corey has been hard to dismiss this season, making 256 runs at an average of 85, while Leigh has averaged close to 30 at the top of the order. Bulls go on attack By Russell Bennett WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION Cardinia skipper Neil Barfuss has lit a fuse on this weekend’s powder keg match-up between the Bulls and long-time arch rival Kooweerup by stunningly launching a pre-emptive attack on some of the Demons’ biggest guns. This season marks the fourth year in a row that the Bulls and Demons will have met in a final. Staggeringly, since the 2008/09 season, the two powerhouse clubs have met seven times in finals - including this weekend. Four of those clashes were grand finals - three of them going the Demons’ way. That’s not lost on Barfuss. “We’ll be doing what we can to put them off their game - it’ll be good old-fashioned cricket,” he said, adding that his side would target Cooper and in-form quick Jess Mathers, specifically. “I think we match up well with them. “It’d be a shame for them to dominate the season and then bomb out in a semi.” The Bulls will take some patchy form into the contest following their loss to Upper Beaconsfield in Round 14 while the Demons knocked off Tooradin and Mathers finished with 7/40. The Gulls will head to Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham to take on the home side in the other semi, which could well be the closer game but carries far less of the fanfare. “It’s just going to be an exciting contest,” Lions skipper Dom Paynter said. “We’ve had some pretty close games over the past couple of years and both sides have shown patches of their best (throughout this season). “To play our best we just need to be in it for long enough and resist their waves of pressure.”

his way to a maiden century (120) to guide his side to a commanding win over Kalgidhar, which they will face again in the semi-finals this weekend. The visitors could only muster 186 on day one at Glover Reserve despite a blistering ton at the top of the order from Vishalbir Thind (134). But on day two, Salerno had his game face on from the get-go. He’d been close to the magical triple figures on a number of occasions for both the Panthers’ first XI and in junior cricket but always found a way
to get out agonisingly close to the milestone. On Saturday, his determination was obvious. Playing a classic opening batsman’s innings, he toughed it out early but continued building and put the foot down when he was set at the crease. Despite his side losing wickets around him - and at one stage sitting on a somewhat precarious 2/33 - Salerno seemingly never lost his composure, playing the lead role before the Panthers were finally dismissed for 305.

Mixed bag results HAMPTON PARK BOWLS It was a good week for Hampton Park bowlers. Midweek Division 3 won their semi-final on Tuesday, only to lose the Sectional final on Thursday, and Saturday Division 4 and Division 6 teams qualifying for next weekend’s Sectional semifinals. TUESDAY The first day of midweek finals and Hampton Park were hosts to Oakleigh at Pound Road. The expected hard day on the greens, but the Parkers were successful. Jen Sherry, Ann Westwell, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood led the way with a free scoring 31-11 win, helped by Rhonda Diaper, June Damon, Brian Diaper and Geoff Ampt who won 25-17. Jim Westwell Gwen Clough, Peter Hayden and Heather Naismith battled hard all day, finally going down 11-28. The desperation of some clubs to see the implementation of divisional football has prompted the AFL South East Commission to release its Terms of Reference and timeline for the Senior Competition Review for the 2018 season. The AFL South East Commission -the governing body of the Nepean, Peninsula, and South East Football Netball Leagues- will investigate and explore the senior football competition structures in the South East region that will promote the sustainability of clubs and participation growth. The commission will also consider the competitive balance of the senior football competition structures for implementation in 2018 and consider the impact to netball in the South East. The commission will consult with stakeholders over the months of March and April before releasing draft recommendations by the end of May. The commission will take on board written submissions from the stakeholders in June before issuing the final Review recommendations in July. The review will also take into account feedback received during 2016 when a survey was sent to clubs asking several questions relevant to this review. Despite being anonymous, responses were received to the survey by a majority of clubs. There will be no further comment by the commission until the draft recommendations are released.
Just two more steps for Dandy Rangers Dandenong Rangers are just two steps away from their first title since 2012 after winning game three of their semi-final series against Perth Lynx on Sunday. The 81-63 victory was built largely on the back of strong contributions from a starting five consisting of skipper Steph Cumming, Aimie Clydesdale, Amelia Todhunter, Sara Blicavs and Ally Malott. Nat Novosel and Jacinta Kennedy also contributed significantly to the scoreboard. The Rangers travel to Sydney for game one of the three-game grand final series against Sydney Uni Flames, who defeated reigning champions Townsville Fire in the other semi-final. Wizards of Oz cast their spell By Derek Ogden The upgraded Colorado is the shape of things to come for Holden. The ‘Wizards of Oz’ joined their Brazilian counterparts and Thai manufacturing technicians to come up with a vehicle that the maker says is ideal for Australia’s driving conditions. “The variety of roads in Australia and the ways Australians use trucks means the 2017 Colorado has to be versatile enough to handle everything thrown at it,” said Holden’s Lead Development Engineer Amelinda Watt. “We know customers like to drive their Colorado off-road or on unsealed roads, but we also know they spend a lot of time on the bitumen,” she said. "We’ve focused on improving refinement and driveability with a range of chassis changes, including electric power steering as well as engine and transmission noise and vibration refinements.” Holden engineers took part in drives in Brazil in addition to completing critical local testing at Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground and on public roads around Victoria, clocking up more than 100,000 kilometres on inner-city and suburban streets, country roads and forest tracks. Based on the Chevrolet Colorado, the Australian model comes in five variants, including cab chassis and pick-up, in three levels of specification
- LS, LT and LTZ. Prices start at $29,490, plus on road costs for the LS Single Cab cab chassis and top off with the LTZ Crew Cab pick-up at $42,490. All are powered by the 2.8-litre Duramax turbo-diesel engine. At almost five-and-a-half metres long and nearly two metres wide the Colorado needs no extras to give it street presence. However, in line with modern truck styling, the pick-up wears a sleek new front fascia and upper grille accompanied by new headlamps with LED daytime running lights. As a point of difference to lesser models the top LTZ has been hooked up with an alloy sports bar, 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior door handles and exterior scalps. Under the skin there’s much Aussie input to be thankful for in the new Holden Colorado. GM continues to be up with the best in connectivity of vehicles to personal information and entertainment and Colorado is no exception with the next generation of Holden’s award-winning MyLink infotainment system. An 8.0-inch colour touch screen, among the largest in class, on the LTZ offers mobile phone connection through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Features are accessed through simple screen-based icons or Siri Eyes Free and Smartphone voice recogni-
tion. Drivers have access to a wide range of in-car apps. The new Colorado benefits from the Duramax 2 turbo-diesel 2.8-litre engine mated, in our test vehicle, to a six-speed automatic transmission with optional manual mode with sequential shifting via the gear lever. Maximum power output is a 147 kW there’s maximum torque of 500 Nm between 2000 and 2200 rpm. Much emphasis has been put on keeping the unit quiet and smooth running. It has a Euro 5 emission rating
thanks, in part, to a diesel particulate filter. With seven airbags standard across the range and a suite of active safety measures depending on model, the new Colorado gained a five-star ANCAP safety rating. As well as rear park assist and reversing camera and auto on / off headlamps other safety measures include electronic stability control incorporating anti-lock braking, electronic brake force distribution, roll-over mitigation, traction control, hill start assist, trailer sway control, hill descent control, front park assist, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, tyre pressure monitoring and rain sensing wipers. The work done by engineers on the Colorado Duramax 2 engine include the fitting of an Engine Acoustic Pack. This has a metal one-piece timing cover (previously a two-piece plastic one), new injectors, oil pan insulators and relocation of the twin balance shafts. Structural changes to the engine, as well as fuel injection upgrades also play their part. The result is cabin ambience on a par with many sedans and a degree of stress-less driving on and off the bitumen.
