Hub is good to go

By Peter Douglas The Hills Hub project in Emerald has been slated to go to tender before the end of this year, according to Cardinia Shire Council.

After the endorsement of Design Scenario 4, detailed designs are now set to be prepared, with the announcement representing a major step forward after numerous setbacks.

The council released the results from the Hills Hub survey in late September last year, with Scenario 4 gaining the most support with 98 votes.

Scenario 4 supports a ground floor hall in the new facility, as well as the demolition of the old hall.

Cardinia Shire Council’s Team Leader Community Development, Tim Cooper, said he was pleased the project was progressing.

He thanked all stakeholders and contributors for their ongoing collaboration and perseverance. “I would like to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of the Emerald Mechanics Institute over many years in managing and enabling the wider community to access and enjoy the existing hall,� Mr Cooper said. “Thanks also to members of the Advisory Group who have worked diligently to ensure the project can move forward, and to the Emerald community for its understanding and patience.�

Initially, a community survey asked residents to nominate their preferred design scenario from four options.

The architect had developed the design scenarios after extensive consultation with the Hub Advisory Committee.

The scenarios were posted at several locations and on the shire’s website, while the architect held presentations for community members.

From the responses received, Scenario 4 gained the most support (98 votes), with Scenario 1 (75 votes), Scenario 3 (32 votes) and Scenario 2 (30 votes) all gaining some backing.

The announcement over detailed designs follows lengthy talks, during which the planning stage stalled.

This disruption was due to disagreements over the designs between council and community stakeholders, which included the Hills Hub Advisory Committee.

Initially, work had been slated to begin mid 2016 with completion late this year.

But Mr Cooper told the ‘Mail’ in February the

planning stage had stalled. “The Hills Hub redevelopment has been in planning phase for the past 12 months with a wide range of community stakeholders making up the Hills Hub Advisory Group,� he said. “At this point in time, the planning undertaken around the concept designs has stalled.

The kitten season has well and truly arrived at Animal Aid. Mark Menze, Chief Executive Officer, explained that the animal welfare organisation had too many cats and kittens on its hands.

Mr Menze said they needed to find loving homes for each and every one of them.

“This year is no exception to any other, whereby from October through to May, around 1000 kittens and cats arrive at our shelters,” he said.

“We have more felines on hand than we have room for, so if you are considering bringing a cat or kitten in to your home, then please make adoption your first option,” Mr Menze said.

discounting its adoption fees for cats and kittens.

“I want each and every cat and kitten in our care to go to a loving, caring home rather than spend too much time in the shelter environment,” he said.

From 1 to 15 March only, adopters will receive a 50 per cent discount on cats over six months of age and a 25 per cent discount on kittens under six months.

“All adopted kittens and cats are desexed, microchipped, have received parasite treatment and come with an identification tag,” he said.

“This offer is of great value as one would normally expect to pay $300 for veterinary expenses alone, which is double the price of our discounted adoption offer for a kitten.”

Cash goes to wildlife rehab Two shelter operators and one foster carer in Monbulk will share in $6000 of government funding, through the latest round of the Wildlife Rehabilitator Grants program.

Through the scheme, 81 shelter operators and 25 foster carers throughout Victoria will share in almost $180,000.

Since 2008, the program has supported licensed Victorian rehabilitators to purchase important equipment and infrastructure for the recovery of native wildlife.

More than 600 registered volunteer rehabilitators operate in the state, who help sick, injured or orphaned wildlife; with the aim of releasing them back into their habitat.

Member for Monbulk, James Merlino, said rehabilitators played a vital role for their community.

“Dedicated shelter operators and foster carers in Monbulk play a vital role in ensuring the return of many native animals back to their natural habitats,” he said.

Big bunny death is on the way - so be ready

By Derek Schlennstedt A new strain of the calicivirus will be released next week at 150 sites around Victoria in a bid to reduce rabbit population numbers which have been steadily rising.

To ensure domestic rabbits are not affected, rabbit owners are being urged to vaccinate their pets against the new strain before its release in March.

The new RHDV1 K5 calicivirus is a Korean strain of the naturally-occurring rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) that was first released in Australia in 1996.

The new strain aims to curb the spread of European Rabbits that have become resistant to existing RHDV strains.

Dr Zoe Feigen veterinarian at the Melbourne Rabbit Clinic in Ferntree Gully says that the RHDV1 K5 Virus is highly contagious and can spread very quickly.

“It can be carried by anyone, from animals to insects, even us, however mosquitoes and blowflies are the primary carriers and during wet weather periods when insect species thrive the virus can be carried and spread to other rabbits very quickly,” she says.

“With the number of release sites across Melbourne, I’m sure the virus will spread rapidly.”

According to the Federal Government’s ‘PestSmart Connect’ website, European rabbits have put 304 Australian threatened species under stress through food competition and land degradation.

Of the 150 locations across Victoria, Silvan in the Yarra Valley has been chosen as a release site.

The group received $10,000 from the Dandenong Ranges Environment and Bushfire Reduction Community Grants Program for a two-year project to improve rabbit control in the SilvanWandin area.

“Rabbits are a massive problem in the area for horticulturists, fruit growers and vegetable growers; the rabbits nip the tops off the new shoots and eat the berries and vegetables, they even get around the plastic rabbit shields,” Alison Brinson says.

strain is part of the Federal Government’s commitment of $1.2 million to develop new rabbit control strategies and reduce the pest population.

While the target is on wild rabbits the likelihood of domestic rabbits contracting the virus is high if they aren’t vaccinated.

Rabbit Veterinarian Dr Zoe Feigen says the best strategy is to get a vaccination and to keep rabbits indoors or provide a mosquito proof hutch if outdoors.

to protect your rabbit as best you can from the current strain is the best thing to reduce the risk of your rabbit getting the virus,” she says.

“If they’re an outside rabbit, make sure that their hutch is mosquitoproof.”

The national release of the RHDV1 K5 virus is set for the first week of March.

Rabbit owners are urged to consult with vets and maintain a vaccination program to protect their rabbits from contracting the RHDV virus.

Healing touch of street art

By Peter Douglas A major street-art project in Belgrave’s Blacksmiths Way has been hailed a huge success, according to the event’s co-ordinator, TBC Australia.

The ‘Big Paint’ event, held throughout the weekend of 25-26 February, lured a diverse range of artists, including many locals, who expressed themselves through their art.

The event forms part of an ambitious youth-based art project, which, over the past three years, has transformed the landscape of Belgrave’s Blacksmiths Way, with street art now taking prominence in the once heavily ‘tagged’ laneway.

As one of TBC Australia’s four major art projects, over the past three years young artists have exerted much creative energy in Blacksmith’s Way, with inspiration coming both from the artist and their surrounds.

The program is designed to not only offer a ‘compromise’ for the graffiti prone area - located next to the train station - but open up creative pathways for local youth.

TBC Australia’s Tiffaney Bishop said the Blacksmith’s Way project had been a hugely positive influence on those involved.

“It’s not designed to be any kind of youth service - we’re just artists - but you can really see the therapeutic benefits,” she said.

“Some of our crew have gone on to university, with one going on to study fashion design.

“They’re amazingly creative individuals and their work really needs to be seen in a positive light.”

Ms Bishop said she was enormously proud of the work of TBC, which took on a life of its own over 10 years ago.

The origins began with Ms Bishop hosting an art class during which the students were very disinterested.

Subsequently, she introduced a street art element, which seemed “to click” with the students.

Ms Bishop said it had been successful, to the point where the members effectively lead the group themselves.

“It’s not really managed by me, I take on a curator role because all artists - aged between 12 years and 20-somethings - all have a part to play,” she said.

“They’re so passionate about what they do; they want to see it succeed.”

Though their work in Blacksmith’s Way hasn’t gained the support of all traders in the main street, many have been supportive and given their work the thumbs up.

One such enthusiast is Joe Domantay from Grunge Cafe.

“Our cafe is in a unique position where our customers can view the landscape below,” he said.

Mr Domantay, who has been at the cafe for five years, said the artwork had added vibrancy to the main strip.

“Street art can be a real feature, if it’s done properly,” he said.

“I feel like there is a culture shift happening in Belgrave, with many trendy cafes emerging, and their art has really added to that.”

Meanwhile, the future of TBC is far from secure.

The organisation receives funding from Yarra Ranges Council, as well as support from the University of Melbourne, Belgrave Traders Association, the Upwey Township Group and others.

But, in order to survive, Ms Bishop

knows TBC needs to transition to a financially sustainable business model.

The exposure gained from Blacksmith’s Way is part of the effort, along with a gallery exhibition planned for later this year.

Then, there is involvement with an augmented reality project in Taipei, along with the development of a quarterly magazine.

The publication, to be called ‘Hoodie’, aims to highlight the artists’ work, as well as provide employment opportunities and an income stream for TBC. “We want the young artists to become successful on a professional level, to give them exposure to a professional environment,” she said.

Knox Council and the wider community are mourning the loss of former mayor, Dr Tom Blaze. Dr Blaze served three terms as mayor during his more than 20 years as a councillor. He passed away on Monday 6 February. Dr Blaze first served 14 years as a councillor of the then Rowville/Scoresby Ward from 1980 to 1994. That period included terms as mayor in 1985-'86 and then in 1994.

Shaped by the hills community A lot can happen in five years.

People come and go. Community groups form and disband. Lives are made and broken, and there is much joy and despair in between.

Though I spent my first 23 years in Healesville, I never truly grasped the importance of community newspapers until I worked for one.

Whether the articles in our pages are about the opening of an art exhibition, a political issue, a new development on the horizon, the grim news of another death on the roads or a family’s final words on a lost loved one, every story in the Mail details our collective history.

I started my first days of work experience at the Mail in April 2012, still halfway through my university course, unsure of myself and full of information about journalism not yet put into practice.

I came in officially later that year, and in the time that has passed, I’ve become more confident as a writer, more headstrong as a journalist and photographer and I’ve been in the privileged position to have witnessed that collective history unfold, in pieces I’ve written and in those written by my colleagues.

The proverb goes that it takes a village to raise a child.

I can look back on my time at the Mail and say that every in-

Good or bad, it’s all part of our history, and these stories need to be told.

But after this week, it will no longer be me telling them.

The 28 February edition of the Mail will be my last. On Thursday, 2 March, I’ll leave this office for the last time, before starting communications work for the Yarra Ranges Council next week.

Hopefully, I’ll still see many of your faces again, only in a different context.

Mental health moves There are many good reasons to walk, including for health and fitness.

But Monbulk’s Misa Eng is set to walk from Frankston to Port Melbourne to raise awareness and funds for youth mental health.

On Sunday 5 March, Misa will join over 300 other participants for March With Me - an annual walk that sees participants walk either 116km, 54km or 16km between Portsea and Port Melbourne - to raise awareness and funds for youth mental health foundation Love Me Love You. In 2016, March With Me raised over $200,000, which helped to deliver nearly 11,000 education experiences to young Australians.

Misa said she was inspired to walk this year after finding out about it through another participant Kirsten Van De Hoef, as well as losing family members and her own personal experiences with mental illness.

“I’ve been struggling with mental health issues since I was a child and later found out that I had developed PTSD, social anxiety and depression,” she said.

Initially from Japan, Misa said she and her family had been subjected to social stigma associated with mental health issues.

“There’s a strong social

stigma against discussing mental health issues over there,” she said.

“Unfortunately, many people live in denial of their mental illness and they are perceived as simply weak.

“This year, I determined to do everything to overcome my struggle, and I’m very grateful for help and support available for mental illness in Australia.”

Despite the physical challenge the walk may bring, Misa is excited to get involved with a good cause.

“This walk is giving us a chance to help others, as well as helping ourselves and I feel very privileged to be part of it,” she said.

“I also want people who are struggling alone to know that there is hope and that we don’t have to fight it alone, we can walk our journey together.”

Misa has already passed her $300 fund-raising target.

Love Me Love You hopes to raise $300,000 for March With Me 2017, which will help the foundation to facilitate mental health education, presentations and well-being workshops to schools and sporting clubs around Australia.

Firewood for the chop The autumn firewood collection season for 2017 starts across Victoria next Wednesday 1 March and will close on Friday 30 June.

Forest Fire Management Victoria spokesperson Peter Kambouris said it was important people only collected from designated firewood collection areas and stayed within collection limits.

“This includes taking a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year,” he said.

“The felling of any trees for firewood is strictly prohibited.

“Authorised officers will be patrolling parks, forests and reserves to ensure people are doing the right thing while collecting their firewood.

“Concealed cameras may be installed on areas of public land where firewood is being removed illegally to assist with evidence collection.”

Permission from local government is needed for the collection of firewood from roadsides under their management.

VicRoads does not allow firewood collection on roadsides it manages.

He said that watching kids from different circumstances, abilities and nationalities sharing and playing together in the giant sandpit at Henry Family Children’s Centre was uplifting.

“Seeing these kids play so amicably together, regardless of background gives me great hope for the next generation,” he said.

“It’s access to kindergarten which really instils these moral values early on.

“If only our politicians could see this.”

Kinders Together is a not-forprofit, community-based organisation providing management, licensing and employment services to kindergartens in Cardina Shire.

There are 20 Kinders Together centres with more than 1300 children in their care, including a significant proportion of rurally isolated children, socio-economically disadvantaged families, newly-arrived migrants, indigenous families and children with additional needs.

Mr Chao said that about 900 children started their governmentfunded kindergarten year at Kinders Together services this year - funding due to expire at the end of this year unless the Federal Government renews it.

He said kinder access was essential to all children.

Letters Where was VicRoads?

The Roads Forum held at Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre (AWBEC) in Cockatoo on Wednesday 22 February was a great success, with standing room only.

The exception was that VicRoads failed to send a representative.

Cardinia Shire staff addressed a range of road issues from maintenance programs, street construction schemes to safety issues and took notes of issues which need attention.

VicRoads issues were addressed with a few party line platitudes on slides sent to council.

The Roads Forum was a follow-up to issues coming out of the Cockatoo community strengthening project conducted during 2016 which identified road issues in Cockatoo as the top priority for the community.

Community strengthening has been a key agenda for recent state governments, but it seems somebody forgot to tell VicRoads.

Community strengthening requires the government agencies and community to work collaboratively and look for win-win solutions to issues.

The council staff treated the community with respect by being informative, willing to answer all questions openly and committing to responding to outstanding matters in the next few weeks.

It was very clear their approach was appreciated and respected.

It appears that VicRoads’ response to the issue of trying to overtake a cyclist on narrow roads with continuous centrelines is that drivers "must ob-

serve the road law’’.

Do they mean that a bus driver going from Clematis to Belgrave must go at cycling speed unless the cyclist pulls over into the loose gravel verge and risks an accident?

Are there other ways to achieve a sensible outcome which is mutually beneficial?

VicRoads is responsible for safety and capacity on the arterial network.

Is it good enough to look after motorists’ safety with wire fencing and leave school children walking between the pavement and fence?

Think of what would happen if a car collided with the fence and slid along it.

They claim to have consulted, but with whom?

Capacity limitations on Wellington Road between Kelletts Road and the roundabout at Belgrave-Hallam Road are escalating quickly, but VicRoads has other priorities.

It is accepted there are many capacity challenges, but in most locations there are options for motorists, not so on this route.

An assessment of the issue may identify some low-cost improvements.

Don’t look for answers and you will be sure none exist!

The many inconsistencies in the location of double lines on VicRoads roads appear to be acknowledged and ‘’will be addressed’’ when the line marking needs to be re-done.

Isn’t this a serious safety issue?

Hopefully somebody in authority will explain community strengthening, accountability and respect for the community to VicRoads.

Their failure to participate in the forum is not good enough.

Exciting billy cart power The 11th Upwey Billy Cart Race was held on Sunday 26 February, and was as big and as exciting as previous years.

Last year, being the 10th year, it was estimated that over 3000 attended throughout the day - a huge crowd for the Up-

A witness to brutality

By Peter Douglas Upwey author Lia Hills officially launched her latest novel at Burrinja Cultural Centre over the weekend.

Following her critically acclaimed debut novel, ‘The Beginner’s Guide to Living’, Hills has unveiled ‘The Crying Place’ to local audiences, which is set in iconic Australian locations and aims to take readers “to the truths that lie in the heart of Australia”.

The story follows the journey of Saul, who seeks to find answers over news about the death of his oldest friend, Jed. Saul takes off on a journey into the heart of the Australian desert to find truth, setting in motion a powerful story.

Hills said the core of the story had been with her for a long time, ever since she arrived as a teenager in Tasmania from New Zealand in the early '80s and heard the words ‘We got rid of them’.

“I’ve remained haunted by the implied brutality of that phrase and the absence of an Indigenous presence,” she said.

“I knew one day that haunting would find its voice.”

‘The Crying Place’ was a

recipient of a Creative Victoria grant in 2012 and Hills visited Alice Springs and surrounds on numerous occasions to research the novel.

This included volunteering in remote communities.

She also began learning Pitjantjatjara and has written poetry in the language.

Interestingly, Hills recorded her first draft using Dragon software rather than writing it in order to get closer to traditional methods of storytelling.

Bird noises and the wind rustling through trees were translated directly into words, each species with its own voice.

Hills honoured these disruptions in her later drafts.

Literary luminary Christos Tsiolkas is one who has heaped high praise on the novel.

“The Crying Place is a brave and devastating novel of grief, place and belonging,” he said.

“I was swept up in Hills’ voice and by her storytelling skills right from the opening pages and I wasn’t released back into the world until I reached the end.

The Great Wall is a flawed but fun piece of historical action bombast.

Two mercenaries journey to medieval China in search of gunpowder, but are drawn into an ancient war between the Chinese forces and a race of alien monsters.

The Great Wall is a massive Chinese-US coproduction, and combines - for better and worse - the styles of East and West.

The film has the grand scale and astonishingly vibrant imagery typical of Chinese epics. The action staging is somewhat messier than director Zhang Yimou’s wuxia epics, but the battles are still tense and cleverly choreographed, with steady, easy-to-follow camerawork. Curiously, the action scenes have illogical tactics and positioning more characteristic of Hollywood blockbusters, and the pacing is rather slack between battles.

Matt Damon is still a dependable action lead, and has a satisfying character arc in which his character William regains a sense of honour, but has little impact on the narrative despite being the ostensible hero (and his European accent is very inconsistent).

Most of the Chinese actors display far more charisma than Damon, and the stand-out star is Jing Tian as Commander Lin. Lin’s journey of leadership and struggle holds the film together, and Tian has a magnetic screen presence of conviction and graceful authority. Handily balancing drama with silliness, The Great Wall overcomes its erratic pacing and flat protagonist to become a highly enjoyable action epic.

Walk ends with emotion

“We have people here who have just cruised it in, people who have found it quite challenging, a few with blisters on their feet, and one lady with a crooked knee who was just determined to cross our finish line,” she said.

“It was with the adrenalin from each other and filled with such faith, hope and love, we pulled each other across the line,” she said.

Ms Hill also thanked the walkers and volunteers, and Sue. “We are so inspired by you people that at OCA we want to make teal the new pink,” she said in response to the sea of teal before her.

Sue Contarino tugged at her T-shirt with a clenched fist as she spoke in the emotion-charged final moments of the Walk With Me event for ovarian cancer on Sunday, 26 February.

“We don’t have to let this spread any more as a silent disease,” she said.

Women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer report four types of symptoms most frequently: Abdominal or pelvic pain.

Increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating.

Needing to urinate often or urgently.

Feeling full after eating a small amount.

That early detection is critical in the survival stakes of this cancer has been a key message of Sue’s campaign since being diagnosed and delivered a terminal diagnosis.

That message was reinforced by Ovarian Cancer Australia CEO, Jane Hill, who also spoke at the finish of the event at Warburton.

An estimated 500 men, women and children took part in the second annual event that set off from Lilydale station at 6am along the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail and the spirit of the event blossomed even in the darkness before first light, to the every end in glorious sunshine at Warburton.

Along the way people joined in, doing what they could, in support of Sue and her family, their own family members or friends touched by ovarian cancer, or just in the hope of increasing the goal of early diagnosis and a better survival rate through research.

Sue told Troy Jansen, a former student of Sue’s at Healesville High School, and later work colleague who filmed the event, that she was buzzing.

Batting first, Ferntree Gully made 8/140 off their allotted overs, with Jayden Bradbury scoring 32 at the top of the innings.

Tom Boxell led the way with 48 as the Knights chased down the target inside 28 overs, aided by Adith Sundaresh’s 32.

Upper Ferntree Gully took the points in their battle for second spot with Eildon Park.

The Kings batted first making 7/159 from their 40 overs.

Despite a run-out on the second ball of the day, Peter Dunlop batted through the innings making 75 and sharing the largest partnership with Jay Windross (31).

In reply, Eildon Park batted steadily with George Harrison making 30, but lost wickets at regular intervals with their last five falling for 22 runs.

Bowling at the death Steve Bowen took two wickets in two balls and completed the over with freakish runout.

The Panthers were bowled out in the 39th over for 144.

Eildon Park will host Upwey Tecoma in the elimination final next week.

Massive week for Monbulk Hawks all around MONBULK CRICKET It was a huge week on and off the ground for the Monbulk Hawks.

It started on Wednesday with the Melbourne Stars Clinic for the Under 10s, Under 11s and Under 12s.

Next up, the youngest members received their medallions at the Milo Trophy night on Friday.

Saturday was a big day which included: Pink Stumps Day, Ladies Day and the annual Dress Up party to celebrate the end of the home and away season.

Ladies Day was a great success which raised nearly $1000 for the McGrath Foundation and half-filling the fence around the ground in bras to promote breast cancer awareness.

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Yarra Ranges Athletics Club's athletes joind other athletes from throughout Victoria and interstate for three days over the weekend at Lakeside Stadium for the Victorian Track and Field Championships.

Championship events for Men and Women from Under 14s to open age provided plenty of exciting competition and many PBs. Highlights were medals to Georgia Laven (U16 1500), Lateisha Willis (U18 100m and 100m hurdles) and Tayleb Willis (U15 100m Hurdles and Triple Jump).

The championships are spread over two weekends, so the club wish all athletes good luck next weekend.

The club added some extra fun by having athletes ring a marine bell each time a PB was recorded.

It was a very noisy morning of athletics!

Well done to all the athletes who acheived a PB on Saturday and to all the others who must have been very close.

Next week the club is back to normal club athletics with Program 3 from 8.30am on Saturday morning.

Please arrive early for warm-ups and to help set up, as a few athletes and parents are away at the Athletics Victoria State Championships.

Motoring Awareness must keep on Parents are never more conscious of child car safety than around the time of their baby’s birth, but RACV research has revealed that awareness diminishes as the child grows older.

RACV Public Policy Senior Programs Co-ordinator, Tim Davern, said that seven children aged under 16 were killed in Victorian car collisions during 2016, while 21 were seriously injured.

Hundreds more required hospitalisation.

“This latest research tells us what parents currently know about child road safety but most importantly it pinpoints those aspects of child road safety that are least understood,” Mr Davern said.

The research involved four parent focus groups and an online questionnaire, both of which explored awareness of choice and installation of appropriate child restraints and the decision-making process when transitioning to an adult seatbelt.

“RACV found that most parents complied with Victorian child restraint laws and all parents with babies aged less than six months, knew that their infant needed to travel in a rearward facing capsule or car seat,” he said.

“However, compliance and awareness of the law appeared to diminish as children become older and transition into larger sized restraints.

“Parents naturally see their baby

moving into a forward-facing child car seat as an exciting milestone but we urge parents to not be in such a rush because the reality is that their child will be safer facing backwards for as long as they fit in the seat.”

Mr Davern said RACV research found there was some confusion when it came to transitioning children into the next sized restraint.

“The best tools we have to indicate when a child has outgrown the restraint are the shoulder height markers, which have been on all restraints manufactured over the past five years,” he said.

“RACV has a new video to improve awareness of checking shoulder height markers and we encourage parents to do the shoulder height check regularly.”

The research also revealed that safety performance in crash testing was very important to parents when purchasing a restraint, but few had directly accessed the Child Restraint Evaluation Program (CREP) crash test information.

To help parents, RACV has updated its website (racv.com.au/childrestraints) with specific information and advice, including links to the CREP results.

Toyota has positioned hybrid technologies as core environmental technologies for the 21st century.

In October 2015, Toyota announced the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 that aims to help reduce the negative impacts of automobiles on the global environment to as close to zero as possible, and to contribute to the creation of a sustainable society.

Hybrid encompasses all of the component technologies necessary for the development of environmentally friendly vehicles, from battery-electric to fuel-cell hydrogen vehicles.

Toyota Motor Corporation expects sales of its hybrid technology to gain pace after the announcement it has sold more than 10 million of these fuel-saving vehicles around the world.

After the significant milestone, Toyota’s target is to increase global sales of its hybrid vehicles to 15 million customer deliveries by 2020 - an increase of 50 per cent.

It took more than 15 years to reach a cumulative global tally of five million hybrid sales, but just under four years to double the total.

The latest target represents an even greater acceleration.
