Non-stop action at Cranbourne Cup The TAB Cranbourne Cup and Decron Cranbourne Pacing Cup will be run together in one night of non-stop action on Friday night, 3 March. The Dual Code Cup Night will feature 16 races, eight of each code conducted from 6.10pm to 10.30pm. Dangerous winds caused the abandonment after just one race of this year’s TAB Cranbourne Cup meeting due to concerns for horse and rider safety.
The Decron Cranbourne Pacing Cup has been shifted from the Saturday night to create what will be a dual code extravaganza. The TAB Cranbourne Cup will be conducted as an Open Handicap over 1600m and carry prizemoney of $150,000, while the Procon Developments Apache Cat Classic will be a 1200m Open Handicap worth $80,000. Trots-wise, the Group 2 Decron Cranbourne Pacing Cup will be run

Dual-cup spectacular to shine By David Nagel The $75,000 Group 2 Decron Cranbourne Pacing Cup (2555m) will sit comfortably alongside its thoroughbred racing counterpart when the two codes combine for a dual-cup spectacular on Friday 3 March. Harness racing greats like Victoria Cup winners Master Musician (1992), Golden Reign (1994 and 1997), Robin Hood (2005), Bettors Strike (2009) and Mr Feelgood (2011) have all saluted in the cup, first run in 1965. And the last two cups run at Cranbourne are great indicators to the quality of participants punters can expect to see next Friday night. In December 2014, it was champion New Zealander Terror To Love who prevailed after a stirring struggle with compatriot Christen Me. The two Kiwi superstars drew away from the field in the final lap, going eye to eye to produce a stunning finish that will long live in the memories of those in attendance. MPs have expressed concerns that the introduction of a medically supervised injecting room in North Richmond could see the facilities popping up in the South-Eastern suburbs as well. As the debate over the proposed facility in the inner suburb rages on in the news and in parliament, Member for the South Eastern Metropolitan Region has bought the debate into her area. “Police crime stats show that there had been a whopping 17 per cent increase in Casey and many of these crimes were directly related to drug abuse,” she said. “If we further soften policy, we can be looking at drug injecting rooms in Cranbourne, Berwick, Narre Warren and Hallam.” However, there has been no mention from the MP who introduced the private member’s bill into parliament, The Sex Party’s Fiona Patten, that there are plans for injecting facilities anywhere other than Richmond. Ms Peulich said any change to the current way drug laws and treatments are administered would have detrimental effects on communities all over the greater Melbourne area. “This would herald a dramatic shift in drug policy and Richmond would just be the first cab off the rank,” Ms Peulich said. “This push from advocates to have them (injecting rooms) established in areas with drug issues and Cranbourne and other surrounding suburbs have a big issue with ice.” Ms Peulich said she would prefer to see a strengthening of current drug laws and an expansion of existing support services for drug users instead of establishing injecting facilities. “We need to address ice addition in our suburbs and also the role of bikie gangs in the South-East in the manufacture and distribution of drugs,” she said. “There is a much better way, and I did say to Fiona, that the Yarra Council’s opposition to CCTV seems like a logical place to start; put in place CCTV in to address the issue of trafficking and dealing and arrest the people responsible. “We can’t just be treating the symptoms of the problem.” Ms Patten has hit back at these claims from Ms Peulich, saying that injecting rooms were the
answer for cleaning up city streets while treating and saving lives of vulnerable users. “60,000 used needles in streets is a massive safety issue,” Ms Patten said. “Residents and their children walk around worrying whether they will get injured and instead of action, Inga wants to just sit back and watch like it’s some awful reality show.” “Well I’ve got news for her, it’s not a show. That 17 per cent increase in drug-related crime is on her and any other politician that thinks a sitback-and-watch approach prevents crime.” “Ms Peulich just perpetuates that problem, proposing more of the same that led to this nightmare in the first place.” Ms Patten is adamant that medically supervised injecting centres in Melbourne would have mental health, medical, housing and other services included to target and treat users. The debate over safe injecting rooms in Melbourne has been controversial at best, with both Labor and the Opposition saying they wouldn’t support the bill, but a state coroner speaking in favour of it. Coroner Jacqui Hawkins stated recently that following the inquest of a young mother who overdosed on heroin in a Melbourne fast food restaurant, she would wholeheartedly support an injecting facility. The Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in King Cross in Sydney opened 15 years ago and research has shown it has helped save lives of users. According to evidence submitted to the coroner, the MSIC averages about 150 visits every day and has “managed” 6500 overdoses. During the 18 month trial period for the MSIC staff managed 329 heroin overdoses where most would have been fatal. Ms Patten believes these statistics from the MSIC show the success of injecting rooms in tackling the drug use rate and flow on effects in communities. “If you want to be tough on crime, you strike at the source. That’s what a MSIC allows you to do. That’s why they are in more than 90 cities and that’s why they get results.” “Perhaps Ms Peulich needs to tap into the Kings Cross CCTV so she can see for herself how its MSIC has transformed the area.”

MPs’ remote control plan By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey-based state Labor MPs Judith Couacaud Graley and Luke Donnellan have come under fire for living about 40 kilometres away from their electorates. Ms Graley, a Narre Warren South MP, said she lived in the bayside town Mt Martha to be close to friends and family. Ms Graley said that she had been re-elected to her seat three times by voters on the back of a “strong record” including new roads, schools, jobs and Casey Hospital’s expansion. “I listen to local residents and I respond by getting things done that matter to their families. “Three times the Liberal Party had run lazy and incompetent nuff nuffs against me, candidates who didn’t listen or care about the issues that matter to local families. “The Liberal Party has done absolutely nothing for this vibrant and growing electorate, and local residents know that.” Ms Graley also took aim at the “many useless” Casey councillors that “neglect and avoid local residents” unless “there is an opportunity to run as a Liberal candidate in a State Election”. A new crop of student leaders have been installed at Fountain Gate Primary School. The new school captains Sajjad, Zubair, Amy, Atalyia, Narwan and Sienna, and vicecaptains Rayven, Grace, Ed and Ali-Sina were

Motorist flees to police refuge Police are looking for the occupant of a grey Nissan Pulsar who injured another driver when he threw a Jim Beam can at a car on the Monash Freeway on Friday 10 February. The two cars were travelling outbound on the freeway near EastLink just before midnight when an occupant of the Pulsar threw the can into the driver’s
side window of a black Honda. The can hit the driver, a male in his sixties from the Casey area, in the face and caused a laceration. The vehicles then continued down the Monash Freeway in and out of traffic before the victim exited at Stud Road and then turned into Heatherton Road, with the offending ve-
hicle still following. The driver of the Nissan continued to harass the driver of the Honda on Heatherton Road by tailgating, flashing headlights and cutting the driver off. The driver of the Honda eventually did a U-turn at James Fawkner Drive and pulled into Endeavour Hills Police Station.

Gas leak at play centre Almost 150 people had to be evacuated from Chipmunks play centre in Cranbourne on Sunday 19 February after the heating and cooling system leaked gas into the centre. CFA, Police and Ambulance crews were called to the centre at 1.20pm after staff had detected a smell of gas in the air and some of the patrons had developed dizziness. Ambulance Victoria crews treated patients at the scene of the incident and carried out health checks on staff and patrons of the play centre. Cranbourne CFA Senior Station Officer Ian Glass said it didn’t take long for his crew to find the source of the gas leak. “We were inside finding the origin of the leak which turned out to be a split system heating/ cooling unit had leaked a refrigerant,” he said. “It is a non-explosive gas we found with our detector, and so we ventilated the area and had to close the place down for the day.” Ambulance Victoria said a number of people were assessed but no emergency medical care was required.

Clyde police push By Victoria Stone-Meadows Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Bass MP Brain Paynter are calling for a new police station in Clyde, despite Victoria Police and the Police Association agreeing a new station in the area isn’t a priority. Mr Guy and Mr Paynter met with Casey Neighbourhood Watch chairman Rob Ward at the Clyde Recreation Reserve on Thursday 16 February to discuss a new police station in the area. Mr Paynter first called on the State Government to build a new police station in Clyde in August last year. He said that despite the recent rise in crime in the Clyde area, the current State Government had been reluctant to tackle the problem and had left local police under-resourced. “We all know and have heard many times that crime in Victoria is out of control and the State Government need to be doing something about it, especially in the south-east growth areas,” he said. “This is a classic example of an

area that was previous paddocks but is now full of residents and our crime stats are up over 52 per cent in this area and we see the government doing nothing. “What we need is a fully manned police station in Clyde to meet the growing demands of the residents.” However, a Victoria Police spokesperson said in a statement to Star News that there were no plans to build a police station in the Clyde area. “Police stations are buildings that do not deter crime while police out in the community and tasked to areas based on intelligence does deter criminal activity,” the spokesperson said. “The Chief Commissioner has acknowledged that growth corridors are a priority, of which Casey is one. “When the new resources are supplied to communities across the state, we will have them on the road detecting crime and keeping people safe rather than sitting at police stations.” Newly appointed Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said the priority of both sides of government should be more police members
rather than new stations. “While we see merit in having a new stations service growing communities of the future, the priority for the ‘here and now’ is getting new police into the area so that they can positively impact on crime,” Mr Gatt said. “As one of the fastest growing local government areas in the country and with one of the worst police-topopulation ratios, we’ve been saying for a long time that the City of Casey desperately needs more police.” Opposition Leader Mr Guy said his party was dedicated to providing more police stations in growth areas of the state. “The Liberal Party is committed to keeping Victorian safe and if that means new facilities in growth areas than that is what we will do,” he said. “This state has a crime wave like we have never seen before, in our cities and in our suburbs; and that means we need more police and we need to stop closing police stations.” The Andrews government announced last year a recruitment drive of over 3000 new police of-

ficers, but Mr Guy said it was too little too late. “Those police won’t come for two or three years when they need to come now,” he said. “That is why we have been calling for more police for the last two years, particularly for areas like Casey.” Casey Neighbourhood Watch chairman Rob Ward said while he wasn’t involved in the politics of the issue, he believed the police in Casey needed the support of another station in Clyde. “The issue is while we can put more police in Casey, there is nowhere to put them; the stations are all full and were built too small,” he said. “Things have to change and police need more resources and we need changes to the system, both are necessary and we need both shortterm changes and a long-term response to the issue.” “Neighbourhood Watch is not a political organisation but we will challenge any side of politics to ensure the police are resourced and the proper laws are in place.”

A Cranbourne man has been arrested while on bail following a search warrant on a property on Stawell Street, Cranbourne, where stolen property was allegedly being used for theft by deception. The search warrant was executed in December 2016, and police found people’s mail, licences and other personal documents allegedly stolen during burglaries in the area in the house. The house also contained a number of homemade firearms and ammunition. The 30-year-old Cranbourne man who lived at the property was not home at the time of the search warrant. He arrived home on a motorbike, and upon seeing police at the property fled the scene. The long arm of law caught up with the man at a hearing at Frankston Magistrates’ Court where police were waiting for him. The man was arrested at the court by detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit. Police charged the man with over 50 counts of deceptions and thefts.

Shed’s space to socialise By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Cranbourne-Casey Men’s Shed has a new space to socialise and take a break from their work, thanks to a $2500 grant from the Casey Cardinia Foundation. The group were awarded the grant in December last year as part of the foundation’s 2016 Community Grants program. The men’s shed has used the money to build a new kitchenette in their workspace and install dust extractors for a safer and cleaner working environment. Casey Cranbourne Men’s Shed president Dennis Vernon said the grant had allowed the group to have a new space to build relationships between members. “It not only makes everything more convenient, but also as our men’s shed is quite diverse, it gives a space for our members who can’t work on the tools to still be involved and part of our group,” he said. “We can come in here and have a coffee, play cards and board games, watch TV and have snacks while still being a part of the group.” The Cranbourne-Casey Men’s Shed started in 2009, with the group meeting in Mr Vernon’s shed at his home, and has since grown to have many members and a new home. The men’s shed officially started operating out of their new home at the Blairlogie Living and Learning Centre in December 2016. Mr Vernon said the move to the bigger shed and the addition of the kitchenette had given the group a chance to expand and work comfortably and safely. “It is a major improvement and has made a hell of a difference,” he said. “We have room to manoeuvre where we used to be working on top of each other all the time.” Mr Vernon said the value of having the men’s shed in his life and the lives of the other members was invaluable to the health and wellbeing of those that are involved. “You can’t put a figure on it really,” he said. “It can be hard for people, and men in particular, when you retire after work you can get really depressed and having a place to go and be with other men is a great thing.” “There are men here now I never knew before, but now I consider all of them my mates and we have all had a chance to learn new skills and it gives us all something to look forward to.” The blokes at the men’s shed often work on projects that benefit other community groups and do not charge for their work on these projects. They are currently constructing possum boxes for local wildlife groups and say these kinds of projects give the men an opportunity to give back to the

Schooled in gender cues By Victoria Stone-Meadows Lynbrook Primary School will be one of 126 schools across the state to lead the way in implementing the Victorian Government’s respectful relationships program. The program was developed on the back of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence, and aims to address violence, bullying, and stereotyping at home and in schools. The leading schools throughout the state will help other schools implement the program as it rolls out to all schools in the state this year as part of the Victorian education curriculum. Lynbrook Primary School principal Russell Gascoigne said he was excited to be one of the first schools to roll out the new program as the school already had a strong focus on equality and respect among students and staff. “Our school is part of the white ribbon foundation, and we hold that very closely to our school values,” he said. “We want to reduce any incidents of family violence or incidents of harassment or bul-
lying in both the classroom and the workplace, so we saw this as a logical progression from that involvement with White Ribbon Foundation.” Mr Gascoigne said the program would be run across all year levels in the school and would help students understand what violence and discrimination looked like and how to deal with it. “We are looking at developing the program in school, so that we can look at providing students with knowledge and understanding and compassion for others that may be different for them,” he said. “We also want to show students how they can try to react in situations and what resources are available to them if an untoward situation presents itself.” The program will also teach students about harmful stereotypes and how they impact on interactions at home, at school and later in life at work. “Our approach to this will be to also improve student attitudes to gender equity,” Mr Gascoigne said. “It goes a bit further than family violence and that type
of thing; we are looking at all types of discrimination and inequality across all areas.” “It will focus on student aspirations, even at early age, such as employment, sporting participation, and any kind of stereotyping in regard to responsibilities of individuals.” “It’s about removing harmful gender roles and the demonstrated behaviour of placing people in different categories.” Cranbourne MP Jude Perera congratulated the school on adopting the program and said the program would help end the attitudes that contributed to high rates of family violence. “Respectful relationships will help end the cycle of family violence by challenging the stereotypes that underpin it,” he said. “As one of the 126 leading schools, Lynbrook Primary School will help us make respectful relationships the success we need this vital initiative to be.” The new program is expected to start at the school in early March and coincide with the beginning of the upcoming school term.

Coles T1D campaign expands By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Berwick woman is again running an annual fund-raiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) with Coles stores in Casey and Cardinia for research into type one diabetes. All funds raised from the $2 cards will help JDRF support research to cure, prevent and treat type one diabetes, or T1D. The cards will also raise overall awareness of the symptoms of the disease. Deb Bayley first approached the Coles store at Eden Rise four years ago after her son Ryan was diagnosed with type one diabetes at just two years of age. She was overwhelmed with the immediate support she received from Coles team members and the fund-raiser has
grown every year since its inception. “This campaign started in 2015 when I sent through a proposal to Coles head office and shared my thoughts and ideas, and it went from there,” Ms Bayley said. “We had five stores last year, and this year we have 13; it’s definitely becoming an annual campaign.” She said the campaign not only helped to raise money for research into the illness but raised awareness in the community and dispelled some of the myths surrounding type one diabetes. “The campaign is reaching out to public because we are finding it raises a lot of awareness and helps with the community to bring up the question of what is T1D?”
“The cards and flyers are talking about T1D and making it clear if it is not caused by poor diet or lifestyle choices and it is an auto-immune illness that cannot be prevented.” Until Sunday 12 March, shoppers at Coles at Casey Central, Springhill and Lynbrook can help Australians living with type 1 diabetes by buying a ‘Card for a Cure’ in-store to support the fund-raising effort. The fund-raiser will also be run from Coles stores in Berwick including Eden Rise, Fountain Gate, Central (Southside) and Berwick North. Coles stores in Pakenham including Village Lakeside, Main Street (Pakenham), Heritage Springs and Cardinia Lakes will also be involved in the fundraiser.

Beating the toll Re: The death toll on Victorian roads. With an average of 262 deaths each year in the last five years, the death toll has increased. In 2016 the death toll was 292 which is the highest of the five years. There has been a dramatic increase from 2015-'16, so we need to find a solution to this horrible issue that we are facing. Studies have shown that in 2014-'15 about 48 people die from drink-driving on Victorian roads. A solution to this is to install an alcohol tester in every car and if the tester finds the blood alcohol over the limit of .05, the car should not even start. Seatbelts are another thing, in 2015, 31 people have died because they were unrestrained. There should also be a way for car to detect if all occupants are wearing seatbelts before the car starts. Everyone gets tired while driving but your life depends on it - in 2015, 50 people have died from fatigue and 300 have been injured. With four seconds of a driver helplessly driving at 100km/h they have already gone 111 metres with no control, so everyone should install a tracking device which will start beeping if it thinks your car is a bit out of control to solve this problem. The most common age-group of death on the roads are people aged 70-plus because
as we get older our reflexes get weaker, so it might be the chief reason for accidents with an elderly driver. I think we should give free public transport to all over 70, as this will encourage the elderly to use public transport. This will not only reduce the amounts of death on road but also will be good for our environment. Businesses undermined By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne West businesses on the corner of Thompsons Road and the Western Port Highway are concerned plans to upgrade the intersection will leave their businesses unreachable. The plan for the intersection is part of the ongoing Thompsons Road upgrades, and will ultimately see the intersection have a flyover for traffic on the highway over the top of Thompsons Road. However, the funding for that upgrade is not ready, and an interim solution of replacing the current roundabout with a signed four-way intersection with traffic lights has been proposed. The business owners that operate from the site of the BP petrol station have raised concerns that the short term intersection will cut off traffic attempting to turn onto the centre from the left lane of Thompsons Road. They have suggested that the plan include the construction of a road to link the back of the service station to Thompsons Road from behind The Lost Dog’s Home that operates next door. The businesses, operators and land owner have been advised that the access road will be completed with the major intersection upgrade in years to come. During the meeting Mr Lennie, who owns the land that the BP and associated businesses operate from, said it is a nobrainer to include the new road. “What we want is this little road built along with the master plan so our tenants' businesses are not affected, and so we can continue to serve the local area not just passing trucks,� Mr Lennie said. “It is a question of the priority of works; we want them to do it at the same time as the intersection, but it might not be done until quite a lot later, so
we would suffer disadvantage in the meantime.� Red Rooster Franchisee Steve Beadle said without direct access to his business now and into the future, he faces severe financial hardship. “I think it means businesses probably could be unsustainable because costs are so high we need every costumer we can get,� he said. “Anything that makes it more difficult for customers to access the business makes it more difficult for businesses to continue to operate.� He also said the current trend in the area towards high volume infrastructure needs to be better thought out for longterm solutions. “Any infrastructure in the area needs to be sensitive to the people who already exist in the area that pay rates and contribute to the region as far an employment and services are concerned,� he said. “I think there is a push for that type of development that is not long term or sustainable for the region.� Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said it would be more sensible to include the new road at the same time as upgrading the intersection. “It makes a lot of sense, and it is not a great ask and not a huge cost if VicRoads is already doing major upgrades,� he said. “The government needs to stop making it harder for businesses to operate and make it easier. Coming at a small fraction of the cost of a traditional Melbourne home, are Tiny Houses the solution to unaffordable homes? Casey Council is investigating how the “Tiny House revolution” of small, portable homes that could be carried on trailers and parked in backyards can be incorporated into Victoria and Casey’s planning regulations. Fred Schultz, of Castlemaine-based Fred’s Tiny Houses, says his two-storey corrugated-steel homes with solid timber interiors aren’t for everyone. It requires an austere lifestyle, including living “off the grid” with solar panels on the home’s roof and minimal electric appliances. But it also helps create a better work-life balance, Mr Schultz said. “It’s about not having a huge mortgage, not having to work so hard to afford a house.” His 7-metre homes - though some are as short as four metres - cost $120,000 for an off-the-grid version. But “shells” in which buyers can have their electrics installed could cost as low as $30,000, Mr Schultz said. “Some are just basically a bedroom that can be parked close to other services, such as a bathroom in a main house. “They’re probably for a single person or a couple that gets along well.” Mr Schultz first moved into a Tiny House after turning 50 and realising he was never going to afford the “dream” house. “I believed my parents when they said if you work hard, you can have whatever you want. “But I found it wasn’t the case.” Cr Amanda Stapledon, who raised the council motion on 7 February, said Tiny Houses in medium-to-high density areas could contribute to housing diversity and affordability. Water in the heat By Victoria Stone-Meadows South East Water are reminding customers to be cautious of their water use following the results of recent water use data that shows households are wasting water on hot days. Data from the South East Water trial is collected by data logging technology, attached to the existing water meters of 169 customers. The project uses information from the technology from households in inner Melbourne and the south-eastern suburbs. Consumption data is then analysed using flow algorithms to determine which appliances are using water and when. The data shows that many households in the South East Water ser-

vice region are watering their garden between 10am and 4pm, when evaporation rates are at their highest. The trial also showed that watering the garden was the number one use of water around the home with watering their gardens accounting for about 27 per cent of water use around the home. The top stop in previous trials was showering which has slipped to second spot and average shower times sitting at six and a half minutes, compared with the suggested four minutes. Sharon Robinson, Acting Customer general manager at South East Water said while spike in water use during summer was expected, people should still aim to reduce their water use.

Add colour to the model show The largest and most popular model train show in Australia is returning to Sandown on the Labour Day long weekend, 11-13 March. The 2017 show includes an F1 air race on the track on Sunday, market stalls on Sunday, train rides every day, club displays every day, model and hobby displays, a plane simulator, model and hobby retailers, operating train layouts, activities and much more. Founded in 2007, the show has gone from strength to strength showcasing some of the best train layouts and train modellers in Australia. In 2017 this successful formula has been expanded and organisers hope the show will become a must-see for all the family.
The show will feature exhibits, displays and activities over three days in five locations at Sandown. On Sunday the F1 Air Race on the race track viewed from the grandstand. Organisers say their mission is to inspire, enthuse and foster interest in models and hobbies for all ages. The Train and Hobby Show as also released a new series of 200 collectible swap cards featuring model trains, cars, planes, tanks, trucks, ships and boats that are available from all good model and hobby shops for free. Not only are these swap cards collectible, but they are also a free admission ticket for any child 15 years and younger when accom-
panied by a paying adult for the entire three days of the show. Children can also get into the show for free by colouring in the attached picture and presenting it at the ticket office. The picture must be the original clipping from the newspaper and the child must be accompanied by a paying adult. If handed in with a name, phone number and email address, the coloured drawing will go into the draw for a prize. Tickets to the show are adults, 16 years and older, $15; Children 4-15 years of age $5; children 3 and under free. Sandown is accessible by car and train with free on-site parking.

The companies originally established by Frank Facey in Dandenong in 1917 will this year celebrate a century of success. Such an achievement is exceptional given the historical instabilities of the early 1900s and subsequent social and economic challenges throughout the decades. The success and growth of Frank Facey Real Estate has been influential in facilitating the early and current development of the City of Casey and Cardinia shire. In the early 1900s, Frank Facey was an accomplished carriage builder in Dandenong. Back then, the region was primarily broad pastoral runs with commercial and business needs being met by an emergent township. By 1917, Frank Facey was so motivated by the infinite potential

He purchased his first real estate business in that year and it was this inspired event which mapped out a successful future for his children and grandchildren. Frank Facey was a man of integrity and high morals. He became a sworn valuer and a Justice of the Peace. He then continued his personal accomplishments to achieve presidency of the Real Estate Agents and Auctioneers Frankston/ Mordialloc branch and was appointed to the central council in 1935. As World War II came to an end, the region experienced an influx of migration and commerce. Blacksmiths and carriage builders made way for motor vehicles and modern industry. The Dandenong regional hospital was built, General Motors Holden,
Heinz and International Harvester all became established in the region, creating exciting employment opportunities and the need for residential development. Frank Facey had positioned himself in the right place at the right time and with his keen eye for business and strong values, he was instrumental in initiating positive change for the region. Frank Facey’s early success continued through the generations and today his original company has broadened its horizons to include operations in Dandenong, Mulgrave, Endeavour Hills, Berwick, Narre Warren and Pakenham. These businesses now include First National Neilson Partners, First National Hall and Partners, Parklea and Facey Industrial Commercial. Redbacks need recruits By David Nagel The opportunity to have a huge impact on the famous colours of the Hampton Park Football Club has arrived, with the club desperate to sign players ahead of the 2017 South East Football Netball League season. The Redbacks have a new executive committee, they have money, and a new coaching panel ready to pass on a wealth of knowledge and experience to a hard-working list of players. They have loyal sponsors and supporters, and an atmosphere set to be enhanced by past-player reunions to commemorate 20, 50 and 60-year premiership celebrations. Now - to complete the picture - they just need bums on seats in the change rooms! The Redbacks have a positive outlook for the future, with their governing body - AFL South East - set to deliver divisional football in 2018. This implementation will allow clubs like Hampton Park to find its watermark, to be competitive for the first time since its last finals appearance in 2011 and bring some much-needed vibrancy back to Robert Booth Reserve. But first, they need to get there. Make no mistake - this is a pivotal moment in the history of this great club that has built rivalries with foes like Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren since the mid 1950s. Off-field, the club is well managed, but winning just four of 84 games since a mass exodus of players crippled the club at the end of that 2011 season well it’s finally taken its toll. The club appeased its players in 2016 with a rumoured move to the divisional structure of the neighbouring Southern Football League. It’s a move that never eventuated, with some club insiders and SEFNL keen to continue a long-lasting relationship. Co-club president Mick O’Brien, a man who spilt blood, sweat and tears for the red and black, is one who is desperate to see it continue.

We thought if we put the club in a financial position things would build from there but we probably underestimated just how hard it is to attract players when you’re not winning games of footy. “We just need to get one, then two,
three, four players, and start building a group that will fight through 2017 and then reap the benefits going forward.” O’Brien and the club’s executive have changed their focus, looking to rebuild the club from the ground up, starting with its coaching department. New head-coach Dean Warren is perfectly suited for the task, with a Level 3 coaching accreditation and previous success with VFL development squads. O’Brien is confident that if the players commit, Warren and his staff can have a huge impact on their individual and team development.
“We just need players, guys who want to put their hearts on their sleeve and have a crack at senior football,” he said. “We’re in a unique situation to provide that opportunity. We want to build with a group, put a younger side on the park and watch that group grow towards success. We want a nucleus that might go through some tough times now but will enjoy some success down the track.” Co-president and football manager Tim Ziegler said the club was still waiting on a commitment from several of the 45 players that have hit the track
in the pre-season. “There are probably 10 to 12 that we are still in negotiations with, those that have been to training and are still deciding their futures,” Ziegler said. “Obviously we’re trying to do everything we can to reassure the players, yes we know it will be tough, that this is the place to be going forward. Speed queen’s biggest test By Russell Bennett Clyde speed queen Ebony Hobson is used to living life in the fast lane, but the events that have transpired since Australia Day must surely have even her head in a spin. The 21-year-old motor racer is also a talented footballer and is set to represent Cranbourne in this year’s VWFL competition. But she had a wrist reconstruction following a football injury at the end of 2015, which kept her from all but two races last season. Still, that was enough to make sure she wasn’t completely out of sight, out of mind. “It’s really reassuring to know that I haven’t been forgotten,” she said. A string of positive results behind the wheel since December has led to Ebony securing a drive in this week-
end’s Australian Wingless Sprints Title at Carrick Speedway near Launceston in Tasmania. But the process for Ebony to secure her drive really only gathered momentum since Australia Day. In fact, she got her race nomination in with just two days to spare. Ebony’s will be one of the large contingent of interstate cars racing in this weekend’s two-day event. “It’ll be the hardest event I’ve ever competed in,” she said bluntly. “But I can’t wait.” Ebony hasn’t really had time to dwell on the magnitude of the opportunity afforded to her this weekend by Larry and Gary Fitzpatrick from Fitzpatrick Autosports. It’s all been a whirlwind. She’s just after redemption after not getting the result she was after in a previous race for the team.
The start of the footy season this year will clash with the end of the racing season, but Ebony said her priority will be behind the wheel - repaying the faith to those who’ve supported her. “You’ve got to give back to the people who put time into you,” she said. “That’s something my Dad has always told me.” For her, it’s fitting she’s involved in both sports. She said that with the rise of the AFL Women’s competition now is as good a time as any to show what women in sport can achieve. Just as it was three years ago when Star News Group first spoke with her, Ebony’s dream is still to race sprint cars in the United States. She knows the obstacles that stand between her and making that a reality, but she could jump the first hurdle with a strong result this weekend.

Ruthless Swans bowl on By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER REVIEW - ROUND 16 (DAY 2) A touch of sentiment shone over the Lindsay Hassett Pavilion on Saturday, as Casey-South Melbourne cemented its spot in the Victorian Premier Cricket finals on the same day the club celebrated their 10-year anniversary down at Casey Fields. In what was always destined to be a special day for the rising club, the Swans annihilated Kingston Hawthorn with a ruthless edge to register their seventh victory in a row. The Swans were sky-high on confidence after posting 7/356 last week, but knew the going would be tough against a solid batting opposition. But Brendan Rose (5/37), the most in-form quick in the competition, took the first five wickets of the innings to shred the Hawks apart and kill any sort of life from the contest, and were eventually bowled out for 159. Rose now has 35 wickets (second in the competition), in what has been an extraordinary last four matches for the quick - in a consecutive four-game sequence, Rose has snared figures of 4/42, 5/75, 5/40, 3/11 and 5/37. And his other bowlers, Nathan Lambden (1/34), Leigh Diston (2/26), Lachlan Sperling (1/14) and Jackson Fry (1/26) all combined in a powerful warning to their rivals. The Swans then went back into bat for a further 20 overs, with Devin Pollock (48) and Jordan Wyatt (38) finding some valuable time at the crease before stumps were called. good stead during their form slump before Christmas. “I haven’t thought about finals too much - we’re focused on Prahran this week, they’re a great side and have a lot to play for, that’s our main focus we will at some point sit down and see where we’re at,” he said. “We just need to keep doing what we’re doing - we can’t flirt with form and we must stick to the same processes. “Not much has changed from our point of view - we always had belief but it was a matter of performing - we have 11 blokes that all have the team’s best interest at heart, and that’s the biggest factor in us having a good run - if it’s someone’s turn to stand up they stand up, we’re in a really good mindset - it’s a great place to be.” Casey now sits fourth with a round to go, after sitting in the bottom-four only three weeks before Christmas. Sperling was also named in the Casey-South Melbourne Team of the Decade during the club’s celebrations that evening, an achievement he didn’t see coming. “I was really shocked to be honest - to be named alongside so many outstanding cricketers was a little bit overwhelming, but I’m pretty proud and it was a great night of celebration hopefully there are many more years to come at this club,” he said. Meanwhile, down at Shepley Oval, a stellar century to Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth (111) saw the Panthers easily chase down Frankston Heat’s 230. AFL WOMEN’S LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 3 Melbourne is finally starting to play their very best football, and after comfortably knocking off the Western Bulldogs by 14-points at Whitten Oval on Saturday night, climb inside the top-four for the first time. As has been the case for the first three matches by the Demons, their rampant midfield was too much for the Dogs to handle, with skipper Daisy Pearce once again relishing the conditions. Early on in the contest, the ball resembled a hot potato, with either side unable to use the ball cleanly. After a fairly even first-term, the Demons sheer class got on top, kicking two unanswered goals to take a 14-point lead into the major break. The Dogs then hit back hard, kicking two early goals in the third-term, courtesy of Jess Gardiner and Kirsten McLeod. But the challenge brought out the best in the Demons, who then asserted their dominance with some fluent play and elite kicking - Daisy Pearce was phenomenal in this term, as the Demons gained a 15-point lead heading into the final-quarter And the Demons closed it out with class, shutting the game down, with their defence not allowing the Dogs many scoring opportunities. End of the season HAMPTON PARK BOWLS The frustrating season is all but over for Hampton Park’s Division 1 team. With only one round to go they cannot make the finals. Tuesday saw them at Pound Road against Clayton. Val Moore, Ron Beverley, John Nunan and Helen Lambert were the only winning rink (23-12) while Rhonda Diaper, Toni Sutton, Geoff Ladner and Christine Hendrie were close, losing 15-18. With an international player skipping against them, Marion Battaglia, Denise Eastick, Neville Hendrie and Andrew Brandolin battled hard to lose 12-32. Hampton Park (1) 2-50 lost to Clayton (2) 14-62. Division 3 travelled to Armadale and although they won had a fright. They had two rinks draw, Clint Mills, Gwen Clough, Peter Hayden and Heather Naismith (19-19) and Janice Collins, Ann Westwell, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood (16-16). Three in a row for the Cranbourne victors CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne took on third-placed Moorabbin at home and picked up the maximum 18 points to make it three wins in a row for the top side. Doug Boggie and his rink, Lynne Wood, Andy Kidd and Paul O’Day went on to win by 14 shots while Joe Byrne and his rink picked up three shots on the last end to win by one shot. Skip John McKenna and his rink won by two shots and Skip Barry Thomas and his rink won by one shot. This gave Cranbourne victory by 18 shots. After the game it was all cheers at the club with this exciting victory. The second side played Doncaster away and came home winners by 12 shots. New Skip Graeme Wood continued on with his good form winning by nine shots and was well supported by Tony Collins and his rink winning by eight shots and Peter De Lisle and his rink winning by four shots. The third team played at home to Hampton Park and despite a great win by Rob Sorensen and his rink, Cranbourne lost in the end by 19 shots. During the game everyone
had to duck for cover as Paul McNamara - using the aid of a bowling arm - delivered the bowl but also let the bowling arm go from his grasp with it flying halfway down the green. To Paul’s embarrassment, the incident was raised at the midway tea break and was met by hysterical laughter by everyone at the club including Paul. In Ladies Midweek bowls, Cranbourne recorded another great win and now sit on top of the ladder with only one game remaining before the finals start. A 13-shot victory by Skip Freda Farrall and her team of Maree Taylor, Minnie Lamb and Kath Dudink was the difference between the two sides. Ten years make an anniversary By Nick Creely After 144 years, the South Melbourne Cricket Club made the bold move to relocate to the Casey area, making Casey Fields their home in 2005/06. The club, which was founded in 1862, has produced more Australian Test captains than any other club in Australia, as well as 47 international players. And on Saturday 18 February, on the night the present day Swans earnt their entry into the Victorian Premier Cricket finals, the club gathered to celebrate their 10-year existence at Casey Fields, as well as name a Team of the Decade to commemorate the outstanding players that have stepped out on the turf for the Swans in recent times. Dozen sixes in Mathers ton By David Nagel Just two questions remain as the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division begins its final round of the season this Saturday. Will Pakenham or Tooradin join ladder-leader Kooweerup in hosting a home semi-final, and will Emerald or Pakenham Upper/Toomuc be relegated to District Division next year? The first question answered on Saturday was that Kooweerup (9/197) will finish top of the ladder after a hard-hitting century from Jess Mathers (104) guided the Demons to victory over their semi-final opponent Cardinia (177). Mathers smashed 12 sixes and two fours in a brutal display of power, launched particularly over mid-wicket and straight. He took great joy in despatching the best bowler in competition, Dwayne Doig (3/84 off 20), to 20 to 30 metres over the fence at Denhams Road at times. “You can’t let him (Doig) dictate
because then he’ll be all over you,” Mathers told the News. “You can make 30 off 30 overs against him, or you can have a crack.” Mathers shared vital partnerships of 27 with skipper Mark Cooper (36) and 62 with Chris Bright (27) to steer his side to victory. Cardinia won’t be too disappointed with its performance -it took the innings of a lifetime to deny them of victory. Kim Bentick took bowling honours for the Bulls. Tooradin (4/180dec and 0/22) has jumped to second on the ladder after embarrassing Emerald (164 and 35) at Westernport Oval. Declaring overnight with a 16-run lead, the Seagulls rolled through a fragile batting order with ease. Russ Lehman and Josh Lowndes claimed three wickets each with Kade Burns and Cal O’Hare also chiming in with two apiece for the Gulls. The Seagulls will need to defeat Kooweerup in round 14 to retain their second ranking.
“To stay in the top two we have to beat them and you always enjoy coming up against a good team with something to play for,” Seagulls skipper Tom Hussey said. The Bombers will likely hold on to a place in the top-flight next season, but will need to be careful against bottom-of-the-table Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc this weekend. If the Bombers make 120 and the Yabbies answer with 350 ... the Bombers get relegated. The Yabbies (116 and 8/71) were hardly impressive themselves losing 18 wickets for the day and narrowly avoiding outright defeat at the hands of Pakenham (5/394). Wins crucial to finalise ladder positions By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 Review - Round 10 (Day 1) In the context of the season, there is no round more important than this as the DDCA contenders get separated from the pretenders. With just four points separating second from seventh, wins are now crucial, and any slip-ups can potentially draw the curtain for any team. But it’s not just at the top that is most intriguing - down the bottom end of the table, three teams are battling to avoid relegation. Springvale South has posted a monster 7/331 in their season-defining clash with Cranbourne at Alex Nelson Reserve. Needing a win to climb their way back into the four, Bloods skipper Craig Slocombe elected to bat. And although no Bloods batsman made triple-figures, they completely dominated the Eagles, flaying them to all parts. Michael Vandort (61) and Andrew Straude (71 not out) both made terrific, if not contrasting, halfcenturies, while five other batsman

And despite little cameo’s from Nathan Pilon (25), Paul Evans (34), Adam Watson (41) and Corey Bevan (25 not out), the Bears couldn’t find their trademark momentum with the blade. Mordialloc are in prime position for a finals-finish, completely outclassing Parkfield at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. The Bears stood no chance to Stuart Squires (4/32), who shredded a hapless batting line-up, before Manish Dabarera (43) provided some brave resistance with the bat. The Bloodhounds skittled them for just 96 off 50 overs in a powerful warning to their rivals. Currently, the Bloodhounds sit
comfortably at 3/59, and could potentially steal second-spot from the Eagles’ grasp next week, while the Bears are battling to stay off the bottom, and will need to provide some resistance to avoid an outright defeat. Down at Hallam, the Hawks are locked in a close battle with Dingley on a flat batting-track, with the Dingoes needing to win to keep their finals dream alive. Winning the toss and batting, the Hawks crafted their way to a strong total of 7/233, with Ryan Hillard (57), Ben Hillard (48) and skipper Steve Gilmour (41) all combining. Revamped Audi is shaping up By Ewan Kennedy Audi revamped its A3 range late in 2016 and we recently published a road test review on the Sportback version (Sportback being Audi speak for fivedoor hatch), now we’ve just been able to spend a pleasant week in an A3 cabriolet. The good life was further improved by the S line sports package in our car. At $4200 it adds Alcantara / leather trim, leather bound flat-bottomed steering wheel with shift paddles, and sports suspension with 18-inch alloy wheels, The single-frame radiator grille is even more sharply edged than ever before. We really like what Audi is doing in this area. The headlights are flatter with distinctive outside edges. The revamping of the rear shape plays on the width of the new A3 with a horizontal lighting set-up and an edge above the revise diffuser. The heavily revised 2.0-litre TFSI engine has an innovative combustion method. It generates up to 140 kW of power, there’s 320 Nm between 1500 and 4200 rpm. The A3 cabriolet, with the company’s latest seven-speed S tronic transmission gets from zero to 100 km/h in just 7.0 seconds. It's not all that quick in this day and age but the cabriolet is heavier than the Sportback. In any case this is a cruiser, not a bruiser.
Infotainment and connectivity are excellent, with the Audi MMI Navigation now standard across the range. The new Audi Connect will be in all models within a matter of months, it will be a good idea to check with your favourite Audi dealer before committing to purchase. The new MMI system has been re-designed, based on contemporary smartphones, with menus and frequently used functions reached in just a few clicks. The main control features a knob and touchpad for entering letters, numbers and, with single or multi-finger gestures, allowing the driver to zoom in on the map. The innovative Audi virtual cockpit, standard on S3, is now offered on the A3, along with smartphone interface for Apple Carplay and Android Auto, both of which are standard on 2.0 TFSI and up. You can switch between two views by pressing a button on the steering wheel. In Infotainment mode, a central window dominates the view with space for the navigation map or phone, radio and media lists. The tacho and speedo are displayed as small-dials on the right and left. In sporty mode the dials are are as big as normal instruments and the centre display is smaller. Matrix LED headlights make night driving almost as safe as daylight. Autonomous emergency braking now

works at speeds up to 65 km/h and has pedestrian detection. Then there’s side assist, active lane assist and rear crosstraffic assist, in some models. The Audi A3 range has a five-star rating from the ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program), it was achieved with ease. Front seats are well designed and comfortable. The back seats can take adults but it does require fair bit of give and take between the four in the car. Not unusual in any convertible, but the little A3 is better than average for its class. Audi A3 cabriolet, with its cloth
roof in place is almost as quiet inside as a car with a steel roof. The roof is power operated and folds neatly behind the rear seats. With the roof open there’s surprisingly little wind entry. We do love running at what we call ‘full-convertible’ mode, that is with all the windows down. The open-top A3 does it better than most, much better than quite a few. Engine response is pretty good, with not too much turbo lag. Once it’s up and running there’s plenty of verve in the way this turbo unit feels. Fuel consumption on the open road was in the six to eight litres per 100 ki-
lometres range. Apparently not all that good, but don’t forget a car loses a lot of its aero effect with the roof down. Around town it generally sat at about seven to nine litres. The optional sport suspension lowers the body by 15 mm, the electromechanical power steering gains sensitivity and efficiency. It’s not a full on sports machine, nor was it ever intended to be, but there’s plenty of character in the way it feels and responds. Audi’s drive select handling system integrates accelerator action, power steering effort and automatic transmission change points. Press button control gives you the choice of Auto, Dynamic, Individual or Efficiency modes. Ride comfort is pretty good for a car with a sporty setup and only the biggest lumps and dips caused it to get a bit excited at times. Road noise on some coarse-chip roads is certainly obvious so if you’re going to be doing a lot of driving on those surfaces make sure you incorporate them in your private pre-purchase road test. Audi A3 is a gorgeous looking little cabriolet that provides plenty of pleasant cruising if the weather is right, as it was during most of our week’s road testing.
