Mr Merlino said the benefits were in full view at Mount Evelyn.

“Yarra View Nursery in Mount Evelyn is an outstanding example of a social enterprise making a huge difference in the local community - creating jobs for disadvantaged Victorians and producing high-quality plants,” he said.

Ms Scott hoped the funding commitment would allow greater government access to the goods and services of social enterprises.

The future of Yarra View Nursery looks brighter than ever, with the Victorian Government visiting the site to announce its $5 million Social Enterprise Strategy.

Victorian ministers James Merlino, Wade Noonan, Daniel Mulino and Robin Scott were on-hand for the announcement at the Mount Evelyn site, which they said is a shining example of what can be achieved through social enterprises.

Yarra Valley Nursery is a wholesale nursery which employs around 150 staff, with a high proportion of those staff members living with a disability.

The 12-acre nursery is owned by the not-for-profit Knoxbrooke Enterprises and is renowned for producing high quality plants, with the products supplied to major retail chains as well as the public.

Yarra Valley Nursery produces more than one million plants annually, ranging from ferns and camellias, to fuchsias and bonsai.

Knoxbrooke President Pat Dalton said social enterprises weren’t in the business of asking for hand-outs, so it was great to see the commitment.

“Yarra View Nursery employs about 150 people and, as such, is one of the biggest social enterprises in the state,” he said.

“It cannot achieve its aim unless the business is financially sustainable.

“What is so important and so pleasing about the government’s initiative is the unique appreciation of the challenges we face, that translates into a real commitment.”

The Social Enterprise Strategy identifies key areas for action including increasing the impact and innovation of social enterprise, building business capacity and skills, and improving market access.

The Labor Government will spend $5 million to implement eight key initiatives, which include better connecting the sector, building an online market and improving training opportunities.

Ralph’s Goode memories

By Kath Gannaway The contribution of Ralph Goode, OBE, to his country and to his home town of Lilydale, will be enshrined in history with a proposal to name the main street cenotaph area, the Ralph Goode Reserve.

The proposal, which Yarra Ranges Council voted unanimously to support, will be put to the Registrar of Geographic Names following a submission by students from Lilydale Primary School.

Mr Goode was the first Lilydale resident to sign up for WW1, and also served in WW2, he wound the clock on the Lilydale clock tower for over 20 years and was on the committee that started the Lilydale Hospital.

His diaries provided a personal account of the day to day life of a stretcher bearer in Egypt, at Gallipoli and throughout the Western Front.

He raised a family and owned the drapers’ shop in Lilydale.

Grade 6 students Keely Miutescu, Amelie Sutherland and Jean-Pascal Sebire represented the school, making a detailed and well-researched presentation at the Council meeting on Tuesday, 14 February.

They said they came up with the idea in 2015 while studying the Centenary of Gallipoli, which coincided with the 150th anniversary of their school.

Introducing Mr Goode’s granddaughters, Diane Mutimer, Gail White and Carolyn Graham, and Mount Evelyn military historian and author of a book on Mr Goode, Anthony McAleer, the students said they felt the people of Lilydale should know about such an important man.

“We found out there was no memo-

rial or anything named in his honour, so we thought we might be able to do something about it,” they said.

The councillors one by one congratulated the presenters, Keely, Amelie and Jean-Pascal on the professional presentation and the level of research put before them, saying they had no doubt they had chosen the right person.

said a lot of ordinary local people went to war on behalf of their country and had never been given the accolades they should have.

“Mr Goode’s family will be very proud as they pass through Lilydale to see this,” he said.

Cr Mike Clarke praised the students saying “this has come through as a very strong and very justified proposal.

It’s so cool in the pool - for thousands

By Peter Douglas The Olinda outdoor pool is enjoying unprecedented visitation levels. With six weeks still left during the summer open season, the 6000-visitor mark is within reach, which would smash the previous best of 4310 that was set last year. The pool officially re-opened in late 2015 after undergoing significant repairs and refurbishment. Much hype surrounded the re-opening, but it appears the momentum has remained for summer 2016-’17. President of the Olinda Community Pool Association, James Edge, attributed some of the success to more enjoyable swimming conditions. “The solar blankets we’ve been using have been highly effective, raising the pool temperature by about five degrees,” he said. The statistics are a far cry from only a few years ago, when the pool had been in danger of permanent closure after cracks were discovered running down the pool floor.

“It has been fully checked out and assessed and you have everyone behind you including the RSL and the Historical Society.”

Cr Fiona McAllister said there were many stories of grandfathers, dads and brothers who went to war and experienced horrific things for their country.

“This will keep those stories alive,” she said.

Cr Jim Child added the application to Yarra Ranges Council would also be enshrined in the official minutes of the council marking the role of Lilydale Primary School, and the students before the council, in achieving recognition for Mr Goode.

“You have left that legacy and you should be very proud of that,” he said.

Lilydale break-in: man gets arrested

A Lilydale man will face court next month after being arrested for robbing a gym in town on Valentine’s Day. Police officers, posting on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page, wrote that a 25-year-old man had been arrested after breaking into a gymnasium on Main Street, Lilydale, on the morning of Tuesday, 14 February.

The man is believed to have broken into the building, stealing drink bottles, merchandise and health food.

He was arrested a short distance away “after being seen on the roof of another premises”, the officers wrote.

The man has been remanded to face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 8 March.

Present for next door Ecologist Michael Smith Growing indigenous plants is always a great option.

In fact, the best reason to have indigenous plants in your backyard is they provide more than one benefit for the community.

So, how can this be?

Well, to survive in the unique local environments, local plants have formed crucial relationships with animals so their ovaries can be pollinated, and their seeds can be dispersed.

For example, Dianella species such as Blue Flax-lily and Pale Flax-lily rely on

buzz pollination for seeds to form.

Native bees such as the Blue-banded and Resin bees, unlike introduced Honey bees, are capable of buzzing their wings fast enough to dislodge their pollen.

These bees can then go around nearby properties and pollinate not only other flax-lily flowers, with the pollen they have gathered, but also tomato plants which similarly require buzz pollination.

Secondly, many plants produce juicy berries, with the aim of attracting birds and lizards to disperse the seeds inside.

Flax-lilies produce vibrant purple/ blue berries which native birds such as wax-eyes, wattle birds and a few native parrots like to feast on.

Once these birds are exploring a community, they can disperse native seeds, control insect numbers and help pollinate other native plants among neighbouring properties.

Another awesome feature of some na-

tive fruiting plants is they are palatable to humans.

The Aboriginal tribe from the Yarra region, the Wurundjeri people, took advantage of this relationship by regularly eating these berries.

Prickly current bush and Rubus (native raspberry) are two such examples and to this day are still eaten.

By planting local and native berry plants, you can be reminded of the first peoples who inhabited this land and share them with your neighbours.

To maintain the long-term health of an ecosystem, it is generally not good practice to add synthetic fertilisers to your soil.

Adding synthetic fertilisers to the soil profile provides a banquet ready-made for annual weeds.

As the weeds germinate, they can easily spread to nearby properties.

Thankfully, Native Australian plants

have evolved to prefer nutrient-poor soils and therefore are sensitive to artificial fertilisers.

One of the best features of indigenous plants is their ability to attract a host of colorful and fascinating insects.

Blue-banded bees, besides being excellent pollinators, have a wobbly flight pattern, which is great to watch.

They also have striking bright blue bands across their abdomen.

Another insect which lives in the region is the Grass-dart butterfly.

When resting, unusually, this butterfly holds one set of wings parallel while the other set is held vertical.

Once these local insects and birds are attracted to a food source they look in the near vicinity for other food sources and nesting spots.

As a result, your neighbours may happen to come across a cool animal in their backyard.

Kids get a March move-on For the seventh year running, Cardinia Shire Council is encouraging students to lace up their runners, hop on their bike or scooter and strap on their helmets to get to school during Mobile March.

Students can get active, have fun and win great prizes for their school.

The most active school in the shire will win the ‘Streets Ahead Cup’.

Each day, teachers at participating primary schools will tally the students who were active on the way to school.

Last year, 15 local schools registered with more than 5000 students getting involved.

Council’s Active Children’s Officer Kate Beveridge said getting to school in an active way was great for kids to get active and be social with family members or their peers.

“Walking, riding, scooting or skating to school gives students a chance to get their bodies moving and expending energy, which helps them to be more alert and attentive throughout the day.

“It’s a great way to get the recommended one hour per day of physical activity, rather than just jumping in the car, and in addition, students have that extra time to form bonds with their classmates and enjoy the fresh air,” Ms Beveridge said.

Fears tree headed for a fall

By Peter Douglas Olinda resident Peter Bourne fears a nearby ‘problem tree’ could one day demolish two bedrooms of his house.

Despite Yarra Ranges Council deeming the tree safe in 2007, Mr Bourne says the tree, located on a council-owned nature strip, is a serious threat to his safety.

He claims branches fall into his driveway weekly, with damage to his car occurring during a recent windstorm.

Mr Bourne said he would like to see the removal of the top half of the tree.

“The main problem is that if a complete section of the main trunk is to come down, it will completely demolish two bedrooms of my house,” he said.

“In the meantime, branches between six to 10 metres are starting to fall below my driveway and into the next door driveway.

“Even the postman is anxious when delivering the mail daily.”

Mr Bourne said when council inspected the tree, a few branches were removed.

But he said further action is now required.

“I was ... told by the arborist that it was a hybrid and in future it will get worse regarding losing limbs,” he said.

“Well ... it has now reached the stage that every week branches are falling in my driveway and, during a storm, my house roof.

“My car has damage to both mudguards, bonnet and roof.”

Mr Bourne said the tree was also a danger to those who walk the footpath.

Yarra Ranges Council’s parks, environment and infrastructure services manager David Harper confirmed the tree had been inspected in 2007, but no

action was deemed required.

“The tree was in overall good condition,” he said.

“However, the tree has a large limb, which extends from the lower trunk and is trying to establish apical dominance (where the central stem of the plant grows more strongly than other side stems).

“Council inspected the tree from an aerial perspective and in particular the major limb union.”

He said the union was cleaned out, visually inspected, probed and hammer tested.

The result of which was that the limb union appeared sound at the time of inspection.

“A relatively small area of bark was missing on the upper surface and was consistent with cockatoo damage from a few years ago,” he said.

“No significant problems were identified with the tree and, as such, no works were recommended.”

Mr Harper said Yarra Ranges Council has inspected trees along that street previously, removing branches that obstructed vision.

“If residents have any concerns about trees on their nature strip, we encourage them to contact council, who will send a qualified arborist to inspect the tree,” he said.

“If branches have fallen from a nature strip tree, a member of council’s trees crew can also come to your property and remove them.”

Meanwhile, Mr Bourne’s statements come after a Mount Evelyn man recently lodged a compensation claim against Yarra Ranges Council over a 2013 incident in which a tree split and fell on his car.

In October 2013, the man, then aged in his fifties, had been driving past Richards Reserve along Leith

Resident Peter Bourne fears major damage at this property. 164964 Road, Montrose, when the incident occurred, trapping him inside his car for more than an hour.

According to Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, the man suffered a significant crush injury to his right arm, multiple fractures to his left wrist and thumb, as well as several broken ribs.

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers associate Melissa Knapic said the council had failed to provide any warning to those passing the reserve that the tree, which stood about 25m tall, posed a risk of collapsing.

The council’s risk emergency and community safety manager Brett Ellis said the council could not comment on the claim.

A free National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) forum in Monbulk is being held on Friday 24 February, in partnership with Yarra Ranges Council and Yooralla.

The forum, to be held at the Monbulk Living and Learning Centre, is open to anyone in the community interested in learning more about the NDIS. The event will focus on what the NDIS will mean for individuals and how people can begin to prepare and plan.

Yooralla’s NDIS experts will lead the forum, which is designed to provide relevant and up-to-date information.

Lilydale mother-of-five, Shannyn Gereg, said attending the session would be helpful for her to determine what services four of her children could access.

Three of her children are deemed to be living with a disability and one is without a diagnosis.

Her son, Ranen, 3, is going through early intervention, and is

currently attending a Yooralla support program.

“He is experiencing social anxiety, needs help with learning how to go to the toilet, social skills and speech,” she said.

Jett, 5, needs help with his speech, motor-skill issues, balance, and will be receiving surgery this year to improve his hearing.

“Jett, who has no diagnosis to date, can potentially access services from November 2017 through the NDIS,” she said.

“At the moment, we can access bulk billed services like occupational therapy, a psychologist, dietician and speech therapy.

“But we can only access five free services through our GP and this is a challenge when more than one child needs support.”

Yarra Ranges residents can have a say on the design of public space as part of the council’s civic centre redevelopment in Lilydale.

The $28 million project will involve the construction and refurbishment of office space and the creation of new public space that will be available for council and community use.

To help ensure the civic space component of the redevelopment ca-

ters for a range of community uses, council is asking the community to provide feedback on how they might use the civic space.

Car tours are on the right track Travellers Place was established 11 years ago

by Tina Holdsworth.

Tina’s dream was to create a friendly personal travel service where your holidays are planned by professional, dedicated staff.

Between Tina and Annette, they have done a lot travel over the years. Some of the areas their trips have covered are: China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Fiji, London, Italy, Hungary and France.

They are also experienced in cruising and have a number of the best cruise lines as suppliers.

Tina now has a new venture - classic car tours.

These are independent and small group tours, covering Italy and Britain.

The Italy tours are based around the Tuscan region and the British Tour takes in the Goodwood Revival.

A growing country practice Sixty years ago, Dr Spud McLeod Murphy set up practice in Emerald.

For many years, this remained a one-to-two doctor practice, even after Dr George Somers took it over.

Over the years, he developed it into the eight-doctor, four-nurse practice it is now, outgrowing the building in which it is housed.

Five years in the planning, and over 18 months in the execution, the extensive redevelopment and refurbishment of the Emerald Medical Centre will be complete early next month.

A grand community opening is planned, which will coincide with the annual Pave Festival, on 8 April.

“We are hoping for a fantastic day with music, entertainment, refreshments and an official opening. The whole community is invited, as we showcase our new building and how it will serve our community,” Dr Somers said.

Speakers for smashing time

By Peter Douglas Legendary Aussie rockers The Angels are aiming to again smash the speakers of local audiences.

Their latest 4x4 Across Australia tour will see the band hand-picking four of its most iconic records and playing - back-to-back - four hits from each record.

Guitar brothers Rick and John Brewster, vocalist Dave Gleeson and the crew will be hitting York on Lilydale in April and have promised to dig through their catalogue of classics, sourcing from more than four decades of material.

To help pump up hills audiences, lead guitarist Rick spoke to the Mail and told of the band’s love for live music.

He said there was an inexplicable bond when The Angels hit the stage, conceding the guitar kinship he shared with his brother was out of the ordinary.

“When we play guitar, it’s hard to explain, it’s an intuitive thing,” he said.

“I instinctively know where he’s going or I’ll lead him somewhere, we don’t have to say anything.

“It must be a family thing; it’s the same with Sam (Brewster, family member and drummer who replaced Chris Bailey).”

The Angels recently celebrated their 40th anniversary after they emerged during the Australian pub rock era of the early ’70s.

Rick said the band had never lost sight of its roots and still kept in touch with many of its contemporaries.

That’s no easy feat when they include names such as AC/DC and Midnight Oil. “That scene was amazing, everything was changing,” he said.

“Funnily enough, we didn’t see much of each other back then.

“I won’t say we had tunnel vision, but we were very focused on what we were doing.

Iconic band The Angels is heading for a show at Mount Evelyn.

“Midnight Oil used to support us and it was a case of we’d come off the stage, then they’d come on, we’d say a quick G’day and that was that.

“These days, with festivals such as A Day on the Green, we get a chance to

see each other and catch up.”

Pleasingly for the die-hard fans, Rick said The Angels hadn’t done much to alter their sound over the years.

“Although we don’t have the big amps like in the old days, the PA sys-

tems are so great that you can just plug in and play,” he said.

“Dave’s still sounding great, we’re still pretty tight.”

With a mix of new songs and classics such as Am I Ever Gonna See Your

Face Again, this is one show not to miss.

The Angels will play York on Lilydale at Mount Evelyn on Friday 7 April.

named misogyny Fifty Shades Darker (MA15+) Starring: Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan Fifty Shades Darker feels like last month’s Passengers: a somewhat decent film poisoned by some extremely disquieting gender politics.

For what it’s worth, Fifty Shades Darker is considerably better than the previous film, Fifty Shades Of Grey.

Darker has sumptuous cinematography, some endearingly human moments, hot and artfullyshot sex scenes, and Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) and Christian (Jamie Dornan) have better chemistry this time round.

But all the stylishness in the world cannot detract from how toxic the core relationship is.

Christian continues to act in a very possessive and controlling manner toward Anastasia, intruding upon her personal and professional lives. The (admittedly fun and steamy) sex scenes are effec-

tively used as placating justification for Christian’s treatment of her.

I’m reminded of Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire, in which long-suffering wife Stella Kowalski thinks that her husband Stanley’s sexual irresistibility excuses his inexcusable acts of domestic abuse.

The big difference is that A Streetcar Named Desire fully acknowledges Stanley as a disgusing wife-beating rapist. But Darker neither commits to or fully expunges the darkness in Christian’s character.

As such, the tender bonding and marriage proposal feel unearned after all the controlling behaviour and subtle emotional abuse.

The film is also slow and tedious, almost devoid of any lasting conflict.

It’s frankly disturbing how misogynistic Fifty Shades Darker ended up being.

A not-so family film

Letters Vicious cycle In relation to the article, ‘Brakes on The Ascent’ (‘Mail’, 14 February).

A great sigh of relief is being expressed at the news of the cancellation of the 2017 The Ascent bike ride.

Last year’s road closures caused great inconvenience to local residents during their usual Saturday activities and clashed with the annual artists’ open house event.

More concerning was the detrimental effect on local traders, which depend upon weekend visitors who arrive in this area by car or bus.

It was a poorly communicated and disruptive event that illustrated the highly disproportionate concessions made by both the State Government and local council to cyclists in the face of the concerns of ratepayers, traders and residents.

Local residents and visitors already face daily challenges of cyclists in dark outfits with inadequate or complete lack of safety lights, and cyclists riding two or more abreast, not to mention obscene language and gestures.

Bike riding and, in particular, riding in groups should be generally discouraged on our winding narrow roads with dark overhang, poor visibility and high tourist car traffic.

Major cycling events should be held only in high visibility areas with numerous road alternatives for local residents, and in areas where local traders would not be adversely affected by road closures.

The Bicycle Network’s anticipated “sense of community, fun and support” should be discovered elsewhere in a safer environment.

This amateur Dandenong Ranges “Le Tour” concept must be nipped in the bud.

By Peter Douglas Hills audiences are in for a rare treat, with a second helping on offer for the hugely popular documentary, ‘The Family’.

After the success of last year’s MIFF Travelling Showcase screening, the film returns to the Cameo for another special Question and Answer session about the making of the documentary with director Rosie Jones.

The feature-length film focuses on the sect known as The Family, which operated mostly out of the Lake Eildon area and from a house on Belgrave-Ferny Creek Road throughout the ’60s and ’70s.

Run by the charismatic Anne Hamilton-Byrne, the apocalyptic sect, to a large degree, was shut down after a police raid in the mid ’80s.

The documentary features some of the victims of the sect who were either born into the sect through members, or acquired through what were believed to be adoption scams.

The children were isolated from the outside world and dressed identically.

The documentary says the children were also subjected to numerous abuses, including being beaten, starved and injected with the drug LSD. The Friday session has been sold out already, so organisers have added another Question and Answer screening for Sunday 26 February.

By Steve Brown FTGDCA In Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association action, the completion of Round 11 of the Norm Reeves Shield saw some interesting results, as the top four is almost set in stone.

Ferntree Gully were always in control at Argyle Way, chasing 216 set by Knox Gardens, despite the ground being top-dressed with sand mid-week.

The Gully has found their feet a little too late in the season, despite some injuries to key players.

A patient 91 from Harrison Brown, who has found his place at the top of the batting-order, combined with super-talented Bryce Galvin helped the Blues to a six-wicket win over the Falcons.

Big-hitting Galvin decided that if the ball struggled to reach the boundary along the ground, then he would go over the top and his brief innings of 85 from just 49 balls took the game away from the opposition.

Brown was last man out after facing

almost 200 balls at the crease.

Mountain Gate produced their best game of the season at the expense of The Basin.

The Bears set the Gators 270 and had one eye on the top four with Upwey-Tecoma leaving the door open.

However, Mountain Gate was having none of that.

A remarkable unbeaten century

by Clint Buckland and a 53-run ninth partnership with Anthony Davis held the Gators together winning by three runs and dissolved any chance of the Bears challenging for the premiership.

On Wednesday 22 February, the club is hosting a 'Junior Melbourne Stars Clinic’ at the main ground, 5.30pm to 7pm, for all juniors, and includes giveaways, barbecue and group photo.

Next weekend is the last home and away game for our five senior teams.

The thirds, fourths and fifths are all a finals chance.

It is also 'Ladies/Pink Stumps Day’ next Saturday, 25 February, 2pm - 5pm in the Logcabin.

Medals ’n’ fitness fun

By Jamie Strudley The weather tried its best to disrupt Yarra Ranges Athletics club athletes at the Eastern Metro Region (EMR) Track and Field Championships, held at the Knox Athletic Club over the weekend.

Two days of heats, finals, laughter and tears, but an overwhelming sense of fun and enjoyment capped a great weekend of athletics.

Great to see athletes timing their fitness and preparation well to record many personal bests during the competition.

Proof that championships are not all about medals, much of the fun is supporting club members and doing your best, medals become the ‘icing on the cake’.

Athletes represented Yarra Ranges Athletics with too many PBs to count and a few medals.

The most outstanding effort was in the Under 11s Girls 800m where Kiara Flavel recorded a Victorian Best Performance of 2.23.13s.

Yarra Ranges Athletics is hosting a fun team event on 18 March called Boost: Athletics - Fast. Teams are limited, so enter now.

Please arrive early for warm-ups and to help set up as we will have a few athletes and parents away at the Athletics Victoria State Championships.
