The Emerald SES unit is officially the hardest-working team in Victoria, after ranking first in the state in 2016 for attending call-outs for assistance.

Due largely to the 9 October windstorm, during which the unit attended about 500 call-outs, the crews racked up an incredible 1444 call-outs last year, putting them well above the around 1200 call-outs of their nearest rival ... that’s an average call-out rate of more than 27 per week.

The Emerald unit has one of the largest areas to cover in the state, which takes in 22 CFA units.

The Victorian SES, Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino, as well as Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Brad Battin, were among those who praised the volunteers’ level of dedication.

Mr Merlino said the crews led by example. “Congratulations to Emerald SES on their number one ranking in Victoria to responding to calls for assistance,� Mr Merlino said. “Completing 1444 call-outs in 2016 is an incredible achievement and it sets a high standard for the entire state. “This is an SES unit at the top of its game, and each and every volunteer should be proud of the work they do, keeping the community safe.�

Counterpart Mr Battin said the tally represented seven per cent of call-outs from across Victoria. “Unit controller Ben Owen continues to praise all volunteers in his unit, who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week - with no financial gain,� he said.

Mr Owen told the ‘Mail’ the unit was traditionally one of the highest ranking in the state, but he never believed they would see 1400 call-outs. “About three years ago, we hit the 1200 mark, but I never thought 1400 was possible,� he said.

“We have an incredible team, just last night four volunteers jumped out of bed at midnight to attend a callout ... they did that without blinking an eye. That’s the kind of dedication they have.�

Despite the achievement, the Emerald SES Unit says it continues to battle substandard facilities.

Presently, they are trying to raise $118,000 to replace the 15-year-old storm truck.

Mr Battin said the unit is in dire need of help. “New funds are desperately needed to upgrade the current unit, which is housed in a leaky tin shed that failed to meet SES safety standards,� he said. “Conditions are so poor that the unit can’t provide their volunteers with a hot meal between call-outs, and antiquated systems hamper response times. “Portable toilets, a makeshift workshop and old shipping crates have all been added to the site to help met the community’s needs, but it’s not enough.�

Mr Battin said it was time for the Victorian Government to honour a $1.8 million commitment made to the unit at the 2014 State Election.

However, Mr Merlino said the unit did have government support. “The volunteers in Emerald are doing a fantastic job protecting the Dandenongs and I’ve met with them personally a number of times to talk about their needs,� he said. “The government is right behind them and I can assure you we are working with the Victoria State Emergency Service to develop sustainable funding arrangements for all operations and facilities. “This is disgraceful behaviour from the Member for Gembrook. “The fact is when Brad Battin was in government, and had the opportunity for four years to support Emerald SES, he did absolutely nothing.�

Got their motors runnin’

By Peter Douglas With a shared passion for motorbikes, GriefLine counsellors Bill James and Will Graeme knew exactly how they could raise money and awareness for GriefLine.

The duo has organised the second Gear Up for The GriefLine Motorbike Run, after the success of the inaugural ride last year.

Starting on Sunday 19 February, riders will take off from Knoxfield (8am for a 9am departure) and include Belgrave, Healesville, Yea, Flowerdale and Glenburn.

The ride will end at Micawbers Hotel in Belgrave, where there will be entertainment and a raffle.

GriefLine is Australia’s only dedicated loss and grief helpline service that provides counselling support services free of charge to individuals and families.

Bill said they were both volunteer counsellors and believed in giving back to the community.

“Until a couple of years ago, I hadn’t ridden a motorbike for 30 years,” he said.

“When I was young, I rode for 10 years in the UK, including competitive trial riding.

“I now ride every day.

“I encourage all motorbike riders to join us on the day.

“We would love to see at least 75 bikes on the road and raise over $2000.”

Will said everyone would suffer from grief some time in their lives.

“You don’t have to do it alone,” he said.

“GriefLine is a non-profit organisation that cares for those who are hurting.

“This ride is in support of those that are going through hell, pain and depression.

“Get behind it and have a great day at the same time.

Briefly Funds flow in for weed fight The Macclesfield Landcare Group has been awarded $29,800 for its Oxford Downs revegetation project, as part of the latest round of funding from Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (PPWCMA).

Community groups have received funding for numerous activities including weed control, pest animal control, and fencing to protect native vegetation.

Funds can also go towards holding community education events.

The funding is from the Victorian Government’s Landcare Program, which aims to help groups to undertake priority work in their area.

Firey recalls blackest days

By Jesse Graham When February 7, 2009, came around, firefighters and emergency services crews around the state jumped into action, defending towns, properties and lives against a fire that grew to 450,000 hectares.

For former Mail journalist and former Gembrook firefighter Russell Bennett, he spent the day “on the end of a hose”, helping his brigade defend power lines from the Bunyip fire, which started in the state park.

At the age of 22, Mr Bennett had been a member of the brigade for about six years, signing up with friends who had family connections to the CFA. In what would undoubtedly be the case for many of our firies, Mr Bennett said the day of Black Saturday was a blur, and details of when he started and finished his shifts are hard to pin down.

“Because it was a striketeam situation, I can’t tell you right now what day or night it was - if I had my watch on me, I wasn’t looking at it,” he said.

He said his team was working with Department of Sustainability and Environment (now Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning) crews who had been containing a deliberately-lit fire from earlier days.

On the morning of 7 Feb-

ruary, the fire broke containment lines.

“Our main thing that we had to do was stop the fire from reaching the power lines - they’re the main power lines into the city, they still are,” Mr Bennett said.

“What happens, obviously when a fire reaches power lines is like anything - it burns - but if the smoke reaches power lines and it’s thick enough, it can short the power out.

“So there was a real worry that, on a day like that, the city would be out of power and you can just imagine if that’d happened.”

Mr Bennett, who is now a sports journalist for the Mail’s parent company, Star News Group, said the enormity of the day did not become clear until his shift was over and news from around the state filtered in.

“When you’re on a truck, you don’t really have perspective of the wider scene,” he said.

“This whole thing is speaking from my perspective, but I had no clue what was happening out this way ... I had no clue what was happening in Kinglake or Marysville - I probably found out about it on the news.

“Even though you’re in the CFA, we had a job to do, like any person on any truck, and you’re focused on that.”

Though Mr Bennett said he had attended car crashes through his firefighting work, including those involving people he knew, the fire his brigade was fighting on Black Saturday did not result in any deaths.

However, the Bunyip fire destroyed 31 properties and burned more than 24,000 hectares before it was stopped on 9 February.

The next year, Mr Bennett joined the team at the Mail. In 2012, he finished up with the CFA. In the years after the fires, Mr Bennett and his fellow firefighters received National Emergency Medals, featuring the Australian green and gold colours, and emblazoned with a wattle plant.

Speaking to the Mail, he said the Gembrook brigade received their medals in a ceremony in Berwick, which he described as “massively humbling”.

On Tuesday, 7 February, Mr Bennett said he stopped for a moment to contemplate the fires and the eighth anniversary.

In a social media post, he summed up the sentiment felt by many in the Yarra Ranges and surrounds: “That was a day I witnessed first hand the best of the human spirit. To the 173 people who lost their lives - you’ll never be forgotten”.

Lilydale police are searching for information after a black Mazda ute was stolen from Mount Evelyn over the weekend.

Officers, posting on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page, said the black Mazfa BT-50, registration 1JH 8LU was stolen from a Mount Evelyn property overnight between Sunday 12 and Monday, 13 February.

CFA banner stolen A banner advertising Belgrave Survival Day has been stolen from outside a fire station, with police investigating and calling for witnesses.

Is your pet microchipped and registered with council?

I can hear some of you saying ... here we go again, just another way of filling council coffers.

Take a moment to consider the following.

Would you drive your car unregistered?

If you were found doing so, the penalty is significant.

It is a legal requirement to register your pet with council, yet we know for a fact many pets are not registered.

On a day-to-day basis, Animal Aid received hundreds of calls from heart-broken pet owners, whose pet has gone missing or managed to escape.

If your pet is lost, you can be assured it will find its way to Animal Aid, where it will be cared for and

loved by our staff and volunteers.

We work closely with council and the community to reunite pets quickly with their rightful owner.

This can be achieved in less than 48 hours, if an animal is microchipped and registered with council.

In fact: 91 per cent of impounded dogs are reunited with their owners; Around one in four cats are reunited. Return rates on cats is lower than dogs, largely due to a lack of microchipping, council registration or other identification; When a lost pet is reunited with an owner through Animal Aid, it is released with registration, a microchip and full ownership details.

An average pet registration costs as little as $3 per month - $36 per year and it will give you the peace of mind that if your pet is lost, it will be much easier for both Animal Aid and council to reunite it with you, the rightful owner!

An unregistered pet found roaming the streets could cost an owner over $700.

It’s a no-brainer.

So I appeal to you, if your pet is not registered, please mark the date 10 April in your diary, as the annual deadline for pet registration.

Register early and you will get the benefit of an extra two months for the same annual registration fee.

And you won’t be penalised for not having previously registered your pet.

Thanks for your patience during the he Blackburn and Heatherdale level crossing removal works.

For the past six weeks we’ve been busy:

• removing two level crossings at Blackburn and Heatherdale Roads • building the new Heatherdale station • removing 150,000 tonnes of material at Heatherdale and 270,000 tonnes at Blackburn (across both sites that’s the equivalent of filling up to 80 Olympic size swimming pools!)

• with around 2,667 truck movements per day during the peak time over the two sites • employing up to 800 staff working over 41 days • installing 18,500 tonnes of crushed rock (ballast) • building three new pedestrian bridges over the rail cutting • laying approximately 6km of track.

The level crossings are now removed, this will improve safety and public transport facilities, improve traffic flow and provide a more reliable Belgrave/Lilydale line service.

Pooch pictures The Cameo Theatre in Belgrave is set to host a fund-raising night that may just save a life or two.

Save-A-Dog Scheme (SADS) will host a ‘pawesome’ movie night this month to raise money to continue to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home dogs and cats.

SADS is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation which started in 1985.

Founder and president, Pam Weaver, said SADS had helped countless animals.

“Save-A-Dog Scheme led to the introduction of the ‘no kill’ movement in Australia,” she said.

“The concept basically means that we re-home every animal that’s able to be re-homed - unless it would be irresponsible for us to do so.”

SADS began life as a rescue group, with volunteers attending other shelters and pounds, and finding foster homes for animals which would otherwise be put down.

Then, in 1996, the organisation took over the contract to operate the Stonnington regional animal pound, and began rescuing and re-homing cats.

Today, the shelter extends its reach to regional Victoria, with volunteers

driving out to country pounds to pick up dogs and cats that have not been claimed by their owners.

The Save-A-Dog Scheme’s Movie Night will assist in raising funds to continue the daily operation of the shelter.

“Because each dog and cat has to be desexed, vaccinated, wormed, micro-chipped, vet checked and temperament assessed before being re-homed, it is much more expensive to save these animals than to euthanise them,” Ms Weaver said.

S a v e - A - D o g Scheme’s Trivia Night will be held at Cameo Outdoor Cinema - 1628 Burwood Highway, Belgrave - at 7pm on Saturday 18 February.

The event will be showing ‘Red Dog: True Blue’ at 9pm.

Pink Zebra Photobooths will be onsite to provide a memorable experience with your pooch.

In addition to the movie, there will be a raffle, games and activities.

Tickets are $30 each, and include an alcoholic beverage or a popcorn and soft drink.

Brakes on The Ascent

The brakes have been applied to The Ascent women’s only cycling event, which last year controversially required road closures around the Dandenong Ranges.

Due to insufficient fund-raising support and a failure to meet a target of 1500 riders, the Bicycle Networkoperated event will not run on 23 April, 2017, just one year after the inaugural ride.

Last year, the event was held on Saturday, 17 April, taking in 100km of challenging roads, with many nearby retailers and residents expressing frustrations.

Concerns over the road closures included a lack of consultation and safety worries.

The event aims to get more women riding in Australia, with statistics saying only one in three bike riders are women.

The ‘Mail’ has attempted to contact the Bicycle Network, but organisers failed to respond.

However, on their website, organisers thanked those who had shown their support for the ride.

“Bicycle Network would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to the 624 people who supported The Ascent crowdfunding campaign,” the message read.

“Despite a huge effort from the team and our supporters, we fell short of our 1500-rider target and fund-raising goal.

“Sadly, this means that The Ascent women-only ride in the Yarra Ranges will not go ahead.”

At this stage, it’s unclear whether organisers will attempt to revive the event next year.

Though, the message did suggest a return could be possible.

“While it’s devastating that we won’t have the chance to provide the opportunity to experience the sense of community, fun and support that The Ascent ride offers, it’s not the end of The Ascent or our commitment to get more women riding,” the message read.

These infamous tables are well-known in this timber industry area.

Why 'Feel Good'?

They are used when DELWP wants to get controversial legislation past the affected objectors.

The public sit around the tables and write down their ideas and go away feeling good that they are being listened to.

Lo and behold, usually about one year later, it becomes legislation, with words like ‘after consulting the community’.

And yet there is no real change to the original proposal.

If DELWP is to continue as professional Crown land managers, why does it appear that they allow this green ideology culture within, just to override procedural fairness?

Market with the mostest Cockatoo CFA has been running its plant market for about 25 years, which is one third of the brigade’s life, as it turns 75 next month.

The market was introduced to raise funds for the brigade, so it can purchase operational equipment and help to protect the community.

About five years ago, the CFA bought a new 3000-litre tanker, which was predominantly funded by the plant market over a long period.

Because the unit is only provided with one tanker by CFA, they will need to replace their brigade-owned truck in about 15 years, so it’s a long-term plan.

They have about 70 nurseries and other gardening-related businesses attending, as well as food stalls, raffles and donuts, with coffee available.

Trolleys are available for hire from Maryknoll CFA on the day, as part of their fund-raising for the year.

The market runs from 9am-2pm and entry is $5 per car.

The market will be held on Sunday 5 March at the corner of Woori Yallock and Avon roads, Cockatoo.

Previously, they have had an October market as well, but can’t find a site available so this will be the only plant market for the year.

Stall-holders have plenty of bargains and plants at reduced rates.

Plants available vary from advanced trees to roses and succulents.

Fruit trees and ferns tend to be popular.

Bacon and egg rolls get the day started, as well as a sausage sizzle.

Every helper on the day is either a CFA member or family member lending a hand.

All food is sourced locally through local businesses, so it’s a real community event.

Country music legend Lee Kernaghan spoke to ‘The Mail’ and said he was excited to be performing his 25th anniversary show at the York on Lilydale on Saturday 25 February.

“I think the highlight of 2017 will be playing at the York on Lilydale- I

cannot think of a better venue,” Kernaghan said.

Although he has visited the Yarra Ranges before, this will be Kernaghan’s first time performing in Lilydale.

He described the show as a “party atmosphere” with all of his top hits.

“It’s a spectacular show,” Kernaghan said.

“I’ll be turning it on and turning it up for everyone.”

Celebrating the quarter of a century career milestone, he preferred to call his fans 'mates’, as they have inspired his music. “ ... because they feel like family,” Kernaghan said.

He said some of his most memorable shows would include the Gympie Muster when he set one of his guitars

on fire and his first ever show at the Deniliquin Ute Muster.

Kernaghan opened the 25th anniversary tour in Tamworth on Thursday 26 January.

He will be joined by Australian country-rock band The Wolfe Brothers and Australian country music artist Christie Lamb.

This week, I’d like to talk about some of the categories in the upcoming Academy Awards (26 February).

I want Arrival, Denis Villeneuve’s intelligent, riveting film about alien visitation and the human psyche, to win Best Picture, but it probably won’t. The film is up against excellent competition - including Barry Jenkins’ harrowing African-American drama Moonlight and Damien Chazelle’s charming, Hollywood ego-stroking La-La Land - and the Academy has always had a general disdain for science fiction.

But Arrival will almost certainly win Best Adapted Screenplay, as it’s a remarkably complete yet innovative interpretation of the source short story. Best Original Screenplay will hopefully go to The Lobster, for its witty, surreal satire of our relationship-obsessed modern culture.

Setting aside the encouraging racial diversity in this year’s acting nominees, there are still some actors who I believe were sorely overlooked.

Michael Keaton was magnetic as McDonald's founder and charismatic sociopath Ray Kroc in The Founder.

Anya Taylor-Joy delivered graceful pathos in The Witch, and even Daniel Radcliffe deserved a nod for his bold, bizarre performance as a gassy talking corpse in Swiss Army Man. I thought Victoria, a nail-biting German thriller shot in one continuous take, should have been nominated for Best Cinematography, but it had already been unsuccessfully submitted as Germany’s Best Foreign Language Feature nominee for last year’s Oscars.

Oscars results rarely reflect the tastes of the everyday movie-goer, but I’m still excited to see how this year’s Oscars turn out.

Odyssey of the Himalayas

By Peter Douglas Acclaimed artist Jan Ward is set to present a talk about her two treks to the Himalayas and the artworks they inspired.

Ward will present ‘Himalayan Odyssey’ at the Sherbrooke Art Society’s annual general meeting on Saturday 4 March from 1.30pm.

Guests are welcome to attend the event.

Ward first visited the remote region of Ladakh, in northwestern India near the border with Pakistan, in September 2005.

She trekked on foot for three weeks over the high mountain passes of the Zanskar Ranges to the north of the Himalayan massif on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau.

The sketches and photos from this trek inspired a series of paintings and a solo exhibition in Canberra in 2007.

A second trek to the forbidden kingdom of Mustang in northern Nepal on the border with Tibet in 2009 was just as visually inspiring and another exhibition of her work followed.

An all-American car display nested in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges is hoping to attract strong numbers from the broader hills community next weekend.

Hailed as the ultimate boys’ day out, the 24th annual All American Card Display and Man Cave Alley will for the first time include the addition of market stalls offering a range of goods targeting to the Aussie bloke.

The event is a major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Emerald and District, run by the club in conjunction with the

Thunderbirds Rod and Custom Car Club, with all proceeds going back into the community through projects and sponsorships.

Rotary Club of Emerald and District’s Russ Nielsen, a key organiser of the event, said there would be about 500 American cars and trucks, hot rods and customs, classic and vintage cars on display.

“Additionally we will have the G-Force V8 race car simulator that people can drive, along with drone and radio control model car demonstrations,” Mr Nielsen said.

Food stalls and children’s

attractions will also be on offer, ensuring there is “plenty for everyone to see and do” while a period dress-up competition, matching owners to their cars, is sure to entertain.

Bowlers recruiting

By Peter Douglas After struggling to field three sides in Saturday pennant, Monbulk Bowls Club is seeking out those who enjoy being part of team sports.

The 51-year-old bowling club has about 130 members and has again increased its numbers this year.

Many bowlers enjoy turning out for social bowls, rather than getting their competitive juices flowing.

Playing pennant bowls is a team sport; it is more competitive and requires a different mental attitude as well as the technical bowling skills.

One pennant competition is played on Tuesdays, making it ideal for retirees or people with flexible work hours.

Monbulk fields three sides in the Tuesday competition.

The other pennant competition is played on Saturday afternoons against other local clubs, from September to March (the warmer months), with a few weeks off at Christmas.

The timing of this competition makes it suitable for men and women who may still be working.

It is also a great way for sportspeople to stay competitive when they retire from other sports.

Club president, Jenny Holmes, fears that, without more competitive bowlers, Monbulk could be forced to drop down to two Saturday pennant sides next season.

“We are nearing the end of this pennant season, with finals coming up in a few weeks. Then the next pennant season starts up again in September,” she said.

“So MBC has only a few months to get some newcomers through the door and train them up ready for the rigours of pennant competition.”

On Sunday 26 February, from 1pm, the club will be holding a Try Bowls Day where anyone can try bowls for free.

Membership for the first year is just $50 and the pennant uniform is subsidised by the club.

Vice-president, Alan Hamilton, says that makes it one of the best value sports around.

“Some bowlers have come from sporting backgrounds like football, soccer, netball, golf or tennis. Others arrive with little sporting experience and then discover they have a talent for bowling,” he said.

“But, overwhelmingly, it is the friendships that keep the club bubbling along.

“New members will be made welcome, no matter what their age or ability.”

The club has excellent facilities, with two synthetic bowling greens which can be used all year round, as well as an award-winning bistro and bar with great prices.

For those preparing for the Oxfam Trailwalker 2017, Olinda will host a twilight training session on Saturday, 18 February.

The popular event is Oxfam’s largest annual fund-raising event, which takes place in Melbourne and other Australian capital cities.

Each year, it raises millions of dollars for Oxfam Australia’s work tackling poverty around the world.

Teams of four must walk or run 100km in 48 hours or less and each team must raise at least $1400 to participate.

The Olinda session is an opportunity to socialise, and discuss training tips and event strategies.

Oxfam Australia’s Event Fund-raising Manager, Anna Wemyss, said it would be a chance for participants to experience a guided training walk in both daylight and darkness, as the majority of those taking on the 100km trail chose to walk at night-time instead of sleeping.

“The Oxfam Trailwalker Night Training Walk is a great chance to experience night hiking for the first time,” Ms Wemyss said.

“For many people, it’s a completely new experience, walking in the bush at night.”

Ms Wemyss said anyone could participate in the walk, not just those registered for the 100km event.

The training walk will take place on Saturday 18 February, starting at Olinda Hall at 6.30pm, before finishing at 2am.

Cost is $15 to join, with a maximum of 300 participants.

Great results for shield finals

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Yarra Ranges Athletics senior athletes track and field Shield season came to a close on Sunday with four teams qualifying for the Athletics Victoria Shield Finals - Open Women and Open Men, Under 16s Women and Under 16s Men, competing at Lakeside Stadium.

This was an excellent reward after 12 rounds of summer competition.

Athletes across a range of track and field events score points for the club, with total points determining the team position on the ladder.

A long, tiring, but ultimately enjoyable day saw our four teams finish with exceptional team and individual performance.

Final results were unavailable at the time of printing; however, it is likely the Open Women team finished an agonisingly close second place behind a strong Mentone team.

The other teams were unofficially 5th (Open Men), 6th (Women U16s) and 8th (Men U16s).

Stand-out perfomances came from Michaela Duncan, Lucas Taylor, Harrison Van Duuren and Mia Strudley.

Special mention to Mia, who added three extra events to her day’s activities to cover for ill or absent athletes, 2000m steeplechase, 1500m, 100m and 400m.

This week’s Yarra Ranges Athletics competition on Saturday morning was the unique and busy ‘Choose Your Own Event’ round.

Oliver competes in the long jump. 164806 Unlike a standard round, when events are scheduled for each age group, athletes were able to choose their favourite events, or an event they were looking to improve.

Parents and officials were kept busy as all possible events were offered to athletes in one morning.

The format provided a fantastic morning of competition and smiles.

With only one week until the Eastern Metropolitan Region Championships, the choose your own event round is often used as a ‘fine tune’ for competition.

Conditions were almost perfect for achieving new personal best results, and these conditions helped several athletes achieve new club records on the day, with the most spectacular being Under 15s athlete, Zane Wheeler, setting a new club record and personal best of 1.77m.

Motoring Oh brother! What a feat

“Jamie and I come from a family of racers, so to both come away with Victorian Titles in one season is extremely exciting for us all and it’s no doubt in part due to the amazing support we receive from our family and our sponsors.”

Compact Speedcars, both Jamie and Justin have a rich racing pedigree and largely credit their supportive families for their recent success.

While Justin can’t thank his girlfriend Amy and daughter Kaleysha enough for always being by his side, Jamie also especially thanks his wife, Fahy, who has been there every step of the way through all of the highs and lows, as well as his son, Clay, who loves to help work on the race car and watch his dad race.

In the space of just over one month, Millgrove-based Paull brothers, Jamie and Justin, have achieved an historic and impressive feat, both being crowned 2016-'17 season Victorian Champions in their respective classes.

Representing the open-wheel class, Justin claimed a hard-fought win in the Victorian Compact Speedcar Title at Rushworth Speedway in December.

Jamie, not to be outdone, recently sped to a popular victory in the Victorian Sports Sedan Title at Rosedale Speedway, after a challenging five years in the class.

It was a difficult run in qualifying, due to not yet nailing the correct setup, which saw him line up ninth for the feature race.

Jamie, who won the 2008 Victorian Marsh Modifieds Title at Rushworth Speedway, managed to work his way through the quality field in the 35-lap feature race, making his way up to second place with 10 laps remaining.

Bridging the gap between himself and race leader Andrew Jordan, Paull gave it everything he had in his VZ Holden Commodore, making a low dive on Jordan on the final turn of the last lap to take the lead and seize the Victorian Title crown.

“It’s such a great feeling to win another Victorian Title, particularly with Justin having also won one recently,” Jamie said.

He was also awarded the Best Presented Car award at the Victorian Title event, having completed Ripper Sticker kits for both his and Justin’s cars.

“It’s great for our team to know that we can both be competitive while running different classes and it just goes to show how much the hard work our team continuously puts in has paid off,” he said.

Off the back of his convincing Victorian Title win, after two disappointing DNFs in previous Victorian Titles, Justin’s strong form continued recently when he took to the track at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway in Queensland for the Australian Compact Speedcar Title.

Starting out of position six for the 30-lap feature race, Justin gave an impressive performance to move into podium contention, where he became involved in a tough battle with Nathan Mathers for the final podium place.

Unable to hold off Mathers’ advances, Paull relinquished third place and went on to finish a gallant fourth.
