By Garry Howe A tradition forged on pies, pots and parody that helped launch sports entertainment and events company A Positive Move has been resurrected in Keysborough in memory of its founder Dick Custerson.

A baker’s dozen of sporting and entertainment celebrities turned out to revive the once famous

Dave Whalen Pie Nights at Keysborough Golf Club on Thursday 2 February as a tribute to Dick, who lost a short battle with cancer last October.

Just over $4000 was raised, which will be channelled through Dick’s own charity, the A Positive Move Foundation, to cancer research initiatives.

A Positive Move general manager Sue Mason said the Pie Night tribute was a great success, both

in terms of entertainment and fundraising.

“I reckon it is the funniest night we have put on in the 17 years I have worked here,” she said.

MC Dave Whalen, who grew up with Dick in Dandenong and both later worked in the electrical industry, explained the origins of the old Pie Nights.

Dave said that he dabbled in musical parody and pitched a song he had written about cham-

pion AFL full-forward Tony ‘Plugger’ Lockett around the time he controversially ironed out Sydney Swans player Peter Caven during a match.

He pitched the song to radio station 3UZ, which asked him to “come in and show them something”.

They liked it and wanted to book Dave for a regular Friday gig.

“So, you know what I did? I rang Dicky Custerson and asked him to manage the whole thing.

“That’s how it (A Positive Move) all started.”

Around the same time, Footscray (Western Bulldogs) champion Doug Hawkins was about to break Ted Whitten’s all-time games record for the club and Dave penned a song about that.

Channel 7 called Dick and wanted Dave to perform the song on The Rex Hunt Show on a Sunday morning.

Sensing an opportunity, Dick rang Footscray Football Club, knowing it would have a tribute function for Hawkins after the game, and arranged for Dave to sing the song as the new games record holder entered the room.

That began a long association with Hawkins, who was one of the guests for the tribute function earlier this month.

The original Dave Whalen’s Pie Night line-up was headed by AFL stars Danny Frawley and Darren Crocker, who also returned for the tribute.

There would not be too many sporting clubs in the south-east that didn’t have a Pie Night fundraiser at some stage.

The format would be for the celebrities to recruit members of the audience to play out a series of challenges devised by the MC. For the tribute show, the room was full of celebrity guests, so teams were picked and topped up by audience members whose names were drawn out of a barrel.

Also participating were AFL giants David Parkin, Stan Alves, Terry Daniher and Terry Wallace, along with VFL coach Brett Lovett, champion swimmer Tammy Van Wisse, singer Andrew Wishart and comedians the Nelson Twins and Marty Fields.

They took turns at challenges like pie eating, Elvis impersonations, arm wrestling, kookaburra calling and Salada eating.

The team captained by the ultra-competitive Danny Frawley took the honours.

“Dicky would have had a ball,” the winning captain said, accepting the trophy.

Crocker applauded the concept of the Pie Nights, the brainchild of Dick and Dave.

“I was in the AFL system from an early age and didn’t really have much experience with the club culture,” he explained.

“These nights took me back to grassroots footy and gave me an opportunity to give something back.

“I got to know some of the other (AFL) guys as well.

“They were great days, great times and gave us great memories.”

Terry Wallace, who donned the umpire’s gear to control the shenanigans, explained how he had taken a part-time role with A Positive Move after Dick’s passing.

“We sat back as a group and everyone was determined to continue Dicky’s legacy,” he explained.

“Sue and the girls run a brilliant function, always have and always will, but the business needed someone to step into Dicky’s shoes.

“No one will ever really fill those massive shoes, but I have come on board as a business development manager two days a week.

“We need to grow A Positive Move and can do that with the support of the people in this room.

“We are here, alive and vibrant and will never forget our roots.”

Drug deals on internet

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An accused drug trafficker allegedly selling meth on Craig’s List using a “sophisticated” app to cover his tracks has been refused bail in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

Craig Thiedeman of Keysborough allegedly admitted to selling under the user-name New Clouds R Us on the “clandestine” app Wickr, police informant Detective Senior Constable Anders Ayoub told the court on 6 February.

For 12 months Thiedeman had used the app to post advertisements on Craig’s List selling quantities of meth for up to $450 for 1.7 grams, the court heard.

“It’s a highly encrypted app and there’s no trace that can crack it,” Det Sen Const Ayoub said.

“There could be multiple transactions for trafficking or it could be few.”

The applicant had allegedly told police he’d sold the drug for his own habit and to pay for personal expenses such as petrol.

On 22 December he made the admissions after police intercepted him in a car with two grams of crystal methamphetamine in Keysborough.

Before a subsequent search of his house, police discreetly waited for party-goers, including a child, to leave.

They then seized two bags of suspected ice, a bottle of suspected GHB and a navy-blue hat some of which have been claimed to be in Thiedeman’s partner’s possession.

Thiedeman said he couldn’t recall a police pursuit in Brighton in 2015, in which his fingerprint was detected on the vehicle when it was later recovered.

He faced charges of drug-driving on methamphetamine, driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving a vehicle with false number plates in Lynbrook in June.

In Berwick in July, he was charged with drugdriving on meth and driving unlicensed.

His lawyer argued that Thiedeman - who until six months ago lived in Berwick - had suitable accommodation, offered a $3000 surety and strong

family support.

At the time Thiedeman was on bail and serving two community corrections orders with judicial monitoring.

He had breached such drug-therapeutic orders twice and CREDIT bail in the past two years.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the applicant had “his hand held every step of the way” in that time but still allegedly operated a trafficking business for 12 months. “(He’s) been doing it ... surreptitiously - that it’s difficult for police to obtain evidence. It’s ongoing while he’s before the court twice.”

Facing re-sentencing for the two corrections orders, Theideman was “looking at a term of imprisonment that can’t be called insignificant”, the judge said.

“You’re trafficking at a level that has a huge impact on the community not only... to maintain your own (drug) use but to maintain a certain lifestyle.”

Theideman will next appear for a screening at Dandenong Drugs Court on 16 March.

Cultural dance shows Maori magic to the masses Dandenong Market was transformed into a South Pacific island paradise on Sunday 5 February when New Zealand and Pacific culture were out on show.

The Waitangi Day celebration saw food, live performances, activates and heaps more for visitors to the market.

Waitangi Day commemorates a significant day in the history of New Zealand and is named after Waitangi, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed on 6 February 1840.

Police are searching for a 14-year-old girl from Dandenong who has been missing since Thursday 2 February.

Shakira Fowlds has not been seen or heard from since she went missing, and police along with her family have concerns about her welfare.

She is described as 155cm tall with a medium build, fair complexion and faded purple hair and is known to frequent the Dandeong area.

Anyone with information about Shakira is asked to contact Dandenong Police Station on 9697 7444.

Two nabbed, goods seized A 38-year-old woman has been remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 22 February to face drugs and handling stolen goods charges after police seized allegedly stolen goods after executing a warrant in Noble Park.

The search on Tuesday 24 January was part of an investigation into burglaries in the Springvale, Noble Park and Keysborough areas between August last year and this month.

They recovered electronics, jewellery, clothing and accessories and are in the process of arranging a viewing for burglary victims who may be their rightful owners.

They also arrested a 42-year-old man in Springvale on Thursday 26 January in relation to the investigation.

Police are calling for the public to look out for a missing boy.

Sixteen-year-old Zac Sargeson was last seen in Dandenong on 25 January.

Police are worried because of his age and the length of time that he has been missing.

He is described as Caucasian in appearance, around 170cm tall, of large build and with brown eyes and brown hair.

Anyone who sees Zac is urged to call triple zero (000) immediately.

Police have called for witnesses after two 23-year-old men were robbed at gunpoint after withdrawing money from a Commonwealth Bank ATM in Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, about 9.45pm on Saturday 21 January.

They drove to Weller Street and were approached by two men who had been standing beside a white four-wheel drive LandCruiser.

One of the robbers, wearing a black mask, pulled out a black handgun and stole their wallets.

The victims drove off and the robbers followed them for a short time.

Police want anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Dandenong CIU on 9767 7444 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Looking Back 100 years ago 15 February 1917 The late Captain Kennedy The many friends of the late Captain A H Kennedy, who died of pneumonia on 26 August 1916 while a prisoner of war at Gottingen in Germany, will be interested in the further particulars that have come to hand.

On 28 July he was blown up by a shell into a crater while leading his men at Pozieres.

The charge commenced at 12am so it was quite dark.

He was wounded in the ankle and we are told he crawled on his back in the hope of getting to safety, but fell into German hands.

For 10 days he was moved from place to place until finally placed at Gottingen.

(Captain Kennedy was originally believed to have been killed by the blast but wrote to his wife in August telling her that he was a prisoner at Gottingen.)

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society Everyone in the camp seems to have been good to him - he was amongst Canadians and had a Russian doctor.

Mrs Kennedy has had letters from strangers in different parts of the world telling her about the funeral.

All the allies sent wreaths and the Germans a firing party and band.

His brigade commander, Jellibrand, wrote about his grand work and stated that he (Capt Kennedy) had been mentioned in despatches.

Addressing the club’s annual meeting he

said: “Simply because Alan Morrow is wearing Dandenong colours does not mean we will win games.”

Alan Morrow, speaking in the same vein as president Carl, said that he would demand compulsory attendance at footy practice from Tuesday 14 March and thereafter.

20 years ago 10 February 1997 Born on Australia Day Zachary Woller, the third son of Heather and Geffrey Woller, of Tattler Street, Carrum Downs, chose a most appropriate and memorable day to be born - Australia Day. He had the honour of being the first baby to put in an appearance at the hospital.

His arrival at 1.30am on 26 January brought joy to not only his proud parents but to the hospital staff.

5 years ago 13 February 2012 Digger holds his ground Dandenong North’s Stan Beasley is one of the last soldiers standing who witnessed one of the most monumental moments of Australia’s history.

On the eve of this Sunday’s 70th anniversary of the first bombing raids of Darwin during World War II, he hopes more will learn about “Australia’s frontline” against Japanese invasion.

Mr Beasley, 88, served in the AIF with 1200 others as part of Usher’s Mob, the 118th Australian General Transport Company, in Darwin.

To his knowledge, there is only one other survivor alive today and the company no longer marches on Anzac Day. An 18-year-old from Warragul dairy farm, Mr Beasley was there for the last 20 of the 64 officially-recognised raids.

Heavy rains prompted new walk The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

When heavy rains stopped us walking from McCrae Street along the creek or through the bush area that is now St John’s College and Besley Gardens to get to Kidds Road and the bridge, we walked from Foster Street to start our treks out to Narre Warren North and Harkaway.

Once we had passed the area of red gums at the top of the Clow Street hill, in a paddock that would become Aratula and Grant streets and the ends of King and Ross streets, we were already almost out of our small town of Dandenong.

From Kidds Road, once we had passed the paddocks at the back of the few houses in Macpherson Street, there were only two houses before we

reached the creek.

The first of these was Florence Cottage, a block-fronted Victorian weatherboard.

It stood on the right hand side as you went down the hill towards the creek.

It was surrounded by some of the last remaining red gum giants of central Dandenong.

The other house had its driveway down on the flat area of Kidds Road just past Ross Street, almost opposite where Besley Street is today.

That house was the original Grange home-

stead on RC Walker’s estate, which in the early days took in a fair bit of the area that made up central Dandenong.

Over the front gate of the property was a stained hardwood archway with The Grange chiselled into the top beam.

A rough driveway led up the hill through a bush paddock which still contained a number of medium-sized dead gum trees.

They had been ringbarked years earlier.

Amongst the gums grew wattles, paperbarks and native scrub.

The attic-roomed weatherboard house stood on the hillside at the top of this driveway, about where the bend of Sarona Street is today.

It was obviously built on this rise because when the small creek flooded Kidds Road, the bridge and surrounding land would be under about two feet of water.

Sometimes when the creek subsided enough for the bridge to be clear, all that area would still

be under water.

The council built a raised boardwalk from just past Ross Street to the bridge.

It ran alongside the deep dirt drain which was near the fence of The Grange land with a gap in it to allow access to the property entrance.

In later years the Kidds Road driveway was closed and another one created from Ross Street, about where Lebanon Street would be.

When all this area was flooded we walked out to the middle of this boardwalk which was about four feet high and two planks wide with a handrail along one side.

Much of The Grange land close to the creek, and beyond the area of the farm that would become the Jesson Crescent Housing Commission Estate, was covered by almost-impenetrable bush.

Tall ti-trees grew there from which we made great vaulting poles.

These we used to vault ourselves over the creek and the many side washes and channels.

Lost youth in a ‘fantasy’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The good news is that police are making inroads into soaring youth crime rates in Melbourne’s south-east, said Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton.

But Victoria’s top cops fear the young “hard core” offenders that police are arresting - and frustratingly re-arresting - are part of a lost generation who were living in a fantasy world and were destined for institutionalisation.

Mr Ashton told a Casey Neighbourhood Watch meeting on 8 February that less than a dozen leaders of the Apex Gang had been out on more than 100 counts of bail.

He noted that police were quickly arresting the repeat offenders and judges were tending to remand more in custody - which in turn was cooling the juvenile crime rate.

However, offenders weren’t changing their behaviour.

“We’ve got a whole group in that mid-teen range who I don’t know that we’re going to save,” Mr Ashton said.

“There’s a group that are well-entrenched who I think are going to be institutionalised for most of their lives.”

Police had made 18,000 more arrests in the past year but there were fewer offenders.

Counter-intuitively, young offender numbers in Victoria were the second-lowest per capita nationally.

“It shows we have a small group of really hardcore youth offenders stretching us to our limits,” he said.

He was confident that police could help drive down the crime rate as low as 1-2 per cent growth by the second half of 2017.

Last year, it had been climbing by 14 per cent but trending towards single digits in recent months.

The alarming spate of home invasions and carjackings was dissipating due to higher remand rates for those offences, Mr Ashton said.

But “softer-target” robberies of servos and supermarkets, particularly for cigarettes, were rising.

He said organised crime groups were behind the raids and were paying the young thieves for the cigarettes.

The products would then be sold for “next to nothing” under retail counters.

With a bevy of extra recruits over four years, a new resource allocation model, he was optimistic there would be relief for the south-east’s stretched police force.

He noted recent technological advances which

were bringing police up to speed such as a rollout of up-to-date ballistic vests, clothes-mounted video cameras and a 24-7 air wing.

Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill, the southern metro region commander who was also responsible for reducing car thefts, told the meeting that young car thieves were targeting luxury European models as a “badge of honour”.

In their efforts to live a “gangster” lifestyle, they would then commit armed robberies and petrol drive-offs in their stolen cars.

“They’re living in a fantasy world,” he said.

Sex work out of city centre Street sex workers could finally be a problem of the past for the Dandenong CBD. Six months ago, on 1 August, the area bordered by Princes Highway and Pickett, Walker, Clow and Hemmings streets became a declared area under the Sex Work Act. This allowed police to ban any sex worker from the area and impose fines.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police identified in 2013-2014 that street sex work was a concern in the area.

“Local police put a significant focus on the issue at that time and reduced it dramatically,” she said.

“The addition of the declared area meant that police were equipped with legislation to respond more effectively if they were to see signs of activity re-emerging. Due to all of this work, police have not had to enforce since the declared area was defined.”

Star News Group covered the issue extensively in 2013, starting with a report in February that a 70-year-old woman was propositioned outside her Scott Street home. Her daughter said the problem was instilling “fear and discomfort” among residents and visitors.

In July that year, Star reported that gutter crawlers propositioned a 19-year-old girl twice in seven minutes as she waited for a bus in Scott Street.

Police made one arrest and interviewed three suspects in a prostitution blitz in Dandenong’s CBD later that month, and more stings and court appearances followed throughout the year.

Sergeant Pat Green at the time said police would take a zero tolerance approach until the behaviour was gone.

“The police are working with other government agencies to look at the problem from a different angle, not only from enforcement,” he said. “It’s just about putting our heads together and working out what capability each organisation has and how they can complement the others.”

Nan a shoplifter

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A grandmother on holiday from China went on a stealing spree of hundreds of handbags, shoes, vitamins, cosmetics and jocks, a court was told on 6 February.

She and her daughter Qiuyu Zhang, 40, of Lynbrook, had been arrested at Fountain Gate shopping centre on 7 July after stealing $620 of clocks, men's underpants, ladies shoes and clothing and a handbag from Big W. At Zhang’s home - where the grandmother had stayed since May - police seized a vast array of suspected stolen goods, including 284 items of vitamins, perfumes, cosmetics, medicines, ointments and sunscreen.

Other seized goods included two bags of costume jewellery, eight pairs of ladies shoes, 34 pairs of slippers and 39 handbags in the grandmother’s bedroom.

The items were brand-new, apparently unused, often in their original packaging and few accounted for by receipts, according to a police summary.

They were stored in a variety of bags, suitcases and wardrobes. The court wasn’t given an estimated value of the stolen goods.

The grandmother had been staying at Zhang’s home since May, and has since returned to China.

After finding an international freight receipt, police believed the grandmother and her daughter may have already shipped stolen cosmetics and clothing to China.

In a police interview, Zhang blamed her moth-

er for stealing much of the loot, but admitted she was fully aware the goods were stolen.

At Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Zhang faced charges of shoplifting and dealing with proceeds of crime and suspected stolen property.

Defence barrister Richard Lawson described Zhang and her husband as hard-working migrants, with three children and a significant mortgage.

“It reached a point when (Zhang) knew her mum was shoplifting and did nothing about it and made a bad situation worse.”

Mr Lawson said he didn’t think the grandmother would return to Australia after coming to attention of immigration authorities.

He conceded the court would be “generous” if it didn’t convict Zhang.

Magistrate Barry Schultz said there had been “serious and protracted theft” but took into account Zhang’s “difficult personal, moral situation”.

Mr Schultz said Zhang nevertheless should have tried to stop the thefts continuing.

He imposed no conviction “with some reluctance” but said - despite police beliefs - there was no evidence some of the stolen goods were being sent to China for profit.

Mr Schultz took into account Zhang’s early guilty plea, admissions, no prior convictions and the return of up to 90 per cent of the property.

Zhang was fined $1500, and the unrecovered property was variously forfeited to the State Government or destroyed.

Hospital’s emergency care surge

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Dandenong Hospital Emergency Department has been flooded by a massive influx of patents over the summer.

According to figures released by the State Government, almost half a million people found themselves in emergency rooms at hospitals in Victoria this summer.

Victorian Health Services Performance data shows Dandenong Hospital has had a significant increase in emergency patents and the influx is reflected in the data.

Between October and December last year, 18,073 patients presented to Dandenong Hospital Emergency Department, an increase of just under 5 per cent on the same time in 2015.

Of those patents admitted by the department, 73 per cent were treated within the target time for their triage category, a drop from 84 per cent over 2015.

The best performing triage categories were code one and five with 100 per cent of code one patents being seen immediately and 93 per cent of code five patents being seen within two hours.

Code two, three and four categories, which aim to see to patents within 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and an hour respectively, had an average of 72 per cent of patents being treated on time.

Monash Health Director of Emergency Medicine Dr Neil Goldie said the large number of births in the growing region contributed to the increase in patent numbers.

“The south-east of Melbourne is one of Australia’s fastest growing regions and is experiencing an unprecedented baby boom,” he said.

Ambulance response times in Greater Dandenong have not changed with the average wait time for code one emergencies in the last quarter of 2015 being 11.29 minutes, the same time as the second quarter of 2016.

Girlfriend laughs at court charges

By Alana Mitchelson The girlfriend of a man who allegedly wielded scissors in a Dandenong supermarket chuckled audibly in court as the police prosecutor presented his evidence statement to the magistrate.

The 31-year-old accused, Michael Cox, visited the Dandenong Coles store on Princes Highway on Saturday 31 December when he was seen opening a packet of scissors.

The Dingley Village resident allegedly then used the scissors to open packets of other items and proceeded to place them in his pockets.

The store manager called triple zero and when police arrived at the scene, the manager presented the police officers with the pair of scissors.

When Cox spotted the police, he allegedly began “backing away” from them and turned into another aisle in an attempt to avoid the officers.

The accused allegedly became verbally aggressive and evasive towards police.

He then pulled items from his pockets and threw them on the floor.

Police found toiletries and rolled up $50 notes - later determined to be counterfeit - on the supermarket’s floor.

Cox allegedly kicked at police, swung his arms around and swore as officers arrested him.

They located a container in his underwear with two zip-lock bags containing about 12g of cannabis.

The accused was escorted to the police van where he pulled further items from his pockets, including a packet of shoelaces and elastic bands while he was being driven to Dandenong police station.

Cox refused to answer police questions and threw the interview room microphone across the table.

The magistrate heard that the accused had a history of not complying with court orders over his 32-page list of prior convictions ranging from dishonesty to drug-related offences.

He was refused bail on the grounds that there would be “too high a risk” of him reoffending.

The accused was charged with theft, resisting arrest and being in possession of a drug of dependence.

“The Daniel Andrews was happy to talk big before the election but clearly is failing to deliver and Victorians are losing out,” she said.

The water body in Monash Reserve on Monash Drive, Dandenong South, is in tip-top shape according to Greater Dandenong Council.

But Arco Restaurant owner Lindsay Bull said it had become a stagnant pond devoid of bird and fish life and filled with mosquitos.

“The lake got very filthy dirty back in December 2015,” he said.

“They were going to empty it. It didn’t end up happening.

“They suggested we needed to keep the fountain running to aerate the water.”

Mr Bull said the pump was attached to Arco

and “I was always paying the bills for the electricity of that”.

He said that when he contacted the council about the bills he was told the fountain wasn’t needed after all and was “aesthetic looks for the restaurant”.

It was switched off for a time, but then removed before Christmas and returned in January following repairs, leaving him confused and frustrated.

“We used to have bird life in lake, now there’s nothing,” Mr Bull said.

“There’s no bird life, there’s no fish, there’s no ducks. We used to have pelicans as well.”

The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid said that the lake was a constructed

stormwater treatment wetland that formed part of the municipality’s drainage infrastructure.

“Independent assessments carried out recently indicate the wetland is in very good health, attracting both fish and birdlife,” she said.

“On this basis the council considers the current maintenance regime for the wetland is appropriate and there are no immediate plans to alter this.”

The wetland is a passive stormwater management tool in that it holds and treats runoff that can contain contaminants.

A private developer built it in 2007 and the council has managed it for the past six years, including cleaning a pollutant trap, dealing with litter and landscaping.

Residents in Greater Dandenong play less organised sport than any other municipality in Victoria, new figures show.

Victoria University Associate Professor Rochelle Eime examined 2015 registration data for the state’s most popular sports - football, basketball, bowls, cricket, golf, gymnastics, hockey, netball, soccer, sailing and tennis.

She found that only 7.08 per cent of residents in Greater Dandenong played organised sport, compared to state leader Buloke with 45.3 per cent.

Meanwhile, the latest VicHealth Indicators Survey found almost one third of Greater Dandenong residents (32.7 per cent) engaged in no physical activity during the week.

The Victorian average was 18.9 per cent.

The phone survey of 300 people in the city also found that Greater Dandenong had an overall health and wellbeing score of 74.9 out of 100, just under the Victorian average of 77.3.

Greater Dandenong Council’s community services director Mark Doubleday said a Sport and Active Recreation Participation Survey in 2015 identified that the most popular sporting activities in Greater Dandenong differed from the state’s favourites.

“Walking, swimming and cycling participation in Greater Dandenong all ranked higher than the state’s most popular sport of basketball,” he said.

“The survey also identified that affordability and access to sporting clubs were some of the key obstacles to sports participation in the City of Greater Dandenong.”

Mr Doubleday said the municipality was Victoria’s most culturally diverse.

“We recognise that sport can often be a great mediator in bringing people from all different cultural backgrounds together,” he said. “Council is actively working to increase participation levels in sports by working closely with sports clubs and sports bodies, as well as organising a range of free health and wellbeing activities for residents including the recent Spring into Summer program.”

Dawn lived a life filled with love Obituary

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A selfless woman from Noble Park has been remembered by family and friends from across the globe at a touching memorial at St James Anglican Church in Dandenong.

Dawn Virginia Fredericks prioritised the needs of others to her very end, even requesting a donation to the McCulloch House palliative care unit of the Monash Medical Centre in lieu of flowers at her funeral.

A stalwart of the Dandenong community, Dawn gave her complete self over to supporting others in the community who needed her.

Dawn, her husband, and their two children Toni and Shane immigrated to Australia from South Africa in 1972 on board an Italian ship.

While lifelong friends were made during that passage, Dawn wasted no time throwing herself whole-heartedly into the Australian lifestyle.

Daughter Toni remembers trips to the beach in the early years of being in Australia with kids and cousins crammed into the back of a Mini on sweltering vinyl seats, with Dawn and her sister Patsy behind the wheel.

As her kids grew, Dawn was always involved in their lives and their interests.

She sat on school committees and attended social events, played organ at the primary school church and was always involving herself in the community through sport, church and other volunteer positions.

In 1983 Dawn found and married her soul mate Larry, a relationship Toni describes as “a fine example of a marriage and companionship”.

For seven years Dawn volunteered her time at the chemotherapy ward of the Dandenong Hospital, speaking with people and supporting them through their treatments.

“I was in awe of her ability to sit with people and face their grief and sadness with them, her strength was truly amazing,” Toni said.

In March 2013, the school bus was involved in a head on crash with a car while Dawn and students from the school were on board.

Dawn was cool in the chaos after the crash as she opened the rear window of the bus and helped the students escape.

“She cared for each and every one of those stu-

dents as she would have her own children,” Toni said.

“We were so proud of her.”

Dawn found her spiritual home at St James Anglican Church in Dandenong and it was an important connection for Dawn as faith had always been an important part of her life.

“Mum was a daughter, sister, mother wife, step mother, sister in law, cousin, aunt, great aunt,

mother in law and ouma; to most she was a beloved friend and she excelled in those roles,” Toni said.

“She had a good life, one she cherished and lived, she truly lived. We have been touched by someone very special and these are the memories we will cherish forever.”

Dawn Virginia Fredericks passed away on 20 January 2017 and was farewelled on Friday 27 January.

Firm sees a big value in parts

Managing director Byron Kennedy has just moved into the new premises he hopes will produce 24 of the $750,000-plus printers each year over the next two years.

“We use local suppliers for the vast majority of parts and then they’re shipped out from here,” he said.

“This is a big export product.

“The markets for us will be Germany, Japan, the USA, but we’re working with some very large Australian companies as well.”

The device makes parts using powdered metal.

“The aluminium is mined in Queensland, then sent to Tasmania and turned into aluminium powder,” Mr Kennedy said.

“We then get that aluminium and build the parts.

“We can build the lowest cost parts and you can export them and the whole product is done in Australia.

“Instead of shipping off dirt to China we can ship end product which is of much higher value.

“Our markets we’re targeting are companies in the automotive sector and industrial companies.

“The real advantage of the technology is it’s fast.”

That golf putter? It takes other companies about 24 hours to make.

“We’re targeting more simple parts - parts that people use today like brackets, adaptors - just simple things but we can print them very fast and very cheap,” he said.

“We’re selling the printers now, primarily into the university sector, and then commercial following that.

“Our background was manufacturing. Our

previous start up, we were manufacturing electric motors.

“We knew that 3D printing was coming but we looked at the technology and saw that it just wasn’t suited to manufacturing.

“We wanted to solve that issue. It was mainly the speed issue.

“We understand the pressure points that manufacturers face on a day to day basis.”

The casting process to produce a metal bracket could take three months.

“We can print ours in the same day,” he said.

“You can look and see if it’s any good, then make 100 parts that day.”

Mr Kennedy said this 3D metal printing technology would be very disruptive for the casting industry, but would never completely replace it.

“Casting is more economical in higher volumes,” he said.

“When you get above 10,000 pieces 3D printing is not economical.

“We’re targeting the one to 10,000 piece market.”

Spee3D received a Greater Dandenong Business Grant at Dandenong Civic Centre on 6 December alongside four other businesses.

It included up to $8000 plus business mentoring and marketing valued at about $2000.

The Journal will profile each of the recipients.

Historic harrows are the top of the crop for Murray Agricultural The Hugh Murray name has been a Dandenong fixture for more than 100 years.

The Buln Buln-based blacksmith turned his hand to driven tine and stump jump harrows in about 1900.

“Word got around his harrows were excellent.

He then looked for somewhere to increase his production and get greater transport links,” Murray Agricultural Equipment operations manager Adrian Norton-Jones explained.

In 1915 he moved to Pickett Street in Dandenong - then the Gateway to Gippsland and closer to raw materials and transport links - where the business remains.

The Taylor family bought into the business in 1930 and fourth generation Jonathan Taylor manages sales and business development today.

“I feel very fortunate. I’m really excited for the future,” he said.

“We’re doing some great things here, and I think we’re going to continue to do great things.”

Mr Norton-Jones started with the company in a post-high school gap year in 1995.

“Dad just found a job ad in the Dandy Journal,” he said.

“He worked in Dandenong and it was easy to get to for him to drop me off here.”

His experience puts him in position to understand manufacturing challenges and lend a hand during busy periods.

“I know how everything’s made. I’ve made everything myself,” he said.

“In the early ’80s, I think there were only two shifts before the recession with 25 employees,” he said.

“It went down to three or four days a week and

only a couple of employees.

“We’ve been very financially conservative through history.

“We’ve always been able to keep things going either by trimming the workforce, which is unfortunate, or going to a reduced working week and trying to be more efficient.”

He said that hands rather than robots were behind almost the entire manufacturing process.

“It’d be nice to be able to make it a bit more efficient in the future, so we can reduce our costs and keep our prices where they are,” he said.

“It’s a matter of coming up with new ways to do it.”

Mr Norton-Jones said that “with Arrium OneSteel possibly closing down, we’d have to source overseas”.

The company used to buy some tines and bolts overseas but brought the purchases back to Australia.

“Even though it makes it more expensive, we use Australian-made where possible,” he said.

He said customers valued a product built in Australia rather than imported in pieces and assembled locally.

“The worm will turn. In America it’s all coming back - the high quality manufacturing is moving back to America from China,” he said.

“It will happen in Australia eventually as well.”

Murray was nominated for the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards last year.

“There’s enough agricultural manufacturers around but not many make harrows like we do

now,” he said.

“Last year was one of our best years for our last five years.

“But it’s getting to the stage where we need to produce varied products.

“To the future, we’ve got a few products that we’re going to bring to market next year.

“We have plans to, hopefully, vertically integrate over the next five years.

“If we don’t do that, we’ll eventually cease, unfortunately.

“We were turning over $1.5 million in the mid-’90s.

“Now we’re at about $1 million.

“We’re doing about 2000 units a year now, which is probably 40 per cent of what it was 15 years ago, unfortunately.”

He said the Riverina of New South Wales was returning to harrowing.

“Which is good for us,” he said.

“They believe they get better yields.”

Murray produces about 15 products, taking care of the pasture for the dairy and grazing industries.

“That just knocks the manure and the hoof prints around so it keeps a nice grass cover and keeps the pasture in good condition,” Mr NortonJones said.

“The livestock won’t eat where they’ve defecated.

“The rest of our harrows are really for the broad acre seeding style - the west of NSW, the Wimmera Mallee of Victoria - those sort of areas where they’ve got the large properties.”

SPORT Coaching is a dream come true

By Nicholas Creely Dandenong Rangers coach Larissa Anderson is one of those people who just seem to relish a challenge. From such a young age, the rising WNBL coach fell in love with basketball, and was instantly drawn to the game and the art of coaching.

“I’ve been playing since the age of seven and I just loved it, and I discovered when I was younger, through all my part-time jobs, that I just loved coaching,” she said.

“I ended up actually going out and starting my own little business doing lots of individual coaching with kids and would also coach at camps and clinics during the year.

“Then going into uni I actually developed my own role model program going into schools.

“It’s always been a big part of me, and it’s what I’ve always wanted to do.

“In my last few seasons while still playing I decided to try and step up and give coaching SEABL a crack at my junior club, the Nunawading Spectres.

“Once I finished WNBL, I had a year off basketball all together and had my beautiful daughter Emma.

“I knew after some time off that I wanted to get back onto coaching and was appointed the SEABL coach at the Dandenong Rangers, and the rest is history.”

Throughout the 39-year-old’s illustrious career, which began in 1995 at the Dandenong Rangers, Anderson would go on to become a great of the Melbourne Boomers, formerly known as the Bulleen Boomers, before returning to the club she is now coaching to significant success.

It’s been a long road for Greek marathon hopeful

By Nicholas Creely As far as marathons go, the Spartathlon in Greece is one of the most gruelling, exhausting and historic foot races on the planet, an event that takes place in September of every year.

For an individual to even qualify for the race, they have to at-least have run a competitive race of 100km in less than 10 hours and 30 minutes.

But North Dandenong runner George Alexandropoulos is determined to one day compete in this phenomenon, and has been making waves across the world for his almost unheard running feats.

The 30-year-old is on an app called Strava, a global running app that measures distances and he currently leads the world from more than 150,000 participants.

Since 1 January, Alexandropoulos has run a total of 1789km in a total of 87 runs and more than 250,000 minutes of running.

He said that competing in the gruelling marathon was what drives him and that a realisation that he needed to change his lifestyle forever made him start to think differently.

“I, basically, want to do the Spartathlon in Greece, which is a 246-kilometre race - an ultramarathon, that’s my dream,” he said.

“First of all I wanted to lose weight. I guess from there I had a passion for running and I’ve always had a fear of putting the weight back on and I just stuck with it.

“The start of this year I’ve ran every day and I’ve dropped eight kilos since the start of the year.

“I run in the mornings before work and then after work I’ll run, and then on weekends I run as much as I can.

“My goal is 15,000km for the year, which I’m actually already ahead of which is good.

“There’s 12 months in the year and last month I did 1500.

A Spartathlon may await this inspiring runner who one day may achieve his dream and join a list of incredible winners from all across the world.

“Player management is definitely a large part but obviously you still need to have a tactical nous about you for sure.”

Signed as the first-female coach of the Dandenong Rangers in their 25-year WNBL history, Anderson is one of the only professional female sporting coaches in Victoria.

She said it was all worth the effort when it influences the important people in her life.

“I’m pleased that a lot more female coaches have come through and continue to come through.

“There are so many wonderful female coaches that I’ve looked up to over the years,” she said.

“Coaching at the same time as having a family and running a business, it can be done but it is hard - I have to sacrifice a lot of time with family and friends during the season but at the end of the day I really love coaching.

“I hope I’m showing my seven-year-old daughter that anything’s possible, that if mum can chase her dreams, so can she - and right now Emma absolutely loves it - she’s gone from having no interest in the game to being completely obsessed.”

Outside from her life in the sporting bubble, Anderson runs a PR business with her mother Julie.

“To be honest, I sit down sometimes and think ‘ok, how am I going to get all this done?’ - I try and be the best mum and wife I can, and mum and I work really hard.

“It is just her and me. If we are not working, things won’t be done,” she said.

“There are tougher days, for sure, where everything needs to be done at once, but you just find a way and I’m very lucky to have such a wonderful support network with my husband and family but life can be pretty crazy through the season.”

A-League still looks to grow The increasing push for the A-League to expand in the Dandenong and Casey regions continues to gain traction after a stellar turnout for the NPL2 match between local teams Thunder and City on 3 February.

With a number of regions, including Geelong, Tasmania and areas of Queensland, aiming to be the next cab off the rank in the A-League expansion project, the 3000 plus supporters that came out in droves to George Andrews Reserve in Dandenong were undoubtedly passionate about a sport they believe should have a professional team in the area.

Many of the top-ranking sports administrators, including Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti, were in attendance in a show of support.

And there are investors who are willing to help out.

Casey council recently forecast a $20m training facility to be built at Casey Fields while Dandenong Council is considering building a boutique stadium at the Dandenong Showgrounds, although government funding still needs to be approved.

It has been common knowledge for several months now that the seven major soccer clubs in the south-east region are behind the push and in November Casey Mayor Sam Aziz revealed to the Journal that planning is well and truly underway.

“It would be a fantastic addition to the region,” he said.

“This is a regional matter, so we are working very closely with our colleagues from Greater Dandenong.

“We are looking at a number of facilities and we believe we firmly have the infrastructure and we would welcome it.”

Dual blows for Rangers

By Nicholas Creely Dandenong Rangers are going through an unwanted form slump right on the eve of finals, going down two nights in a row in bitterly disappointing fashion.

With the Rangers looking to cement their place in the finals, they had to first climb the mountain of a weekend on the road.

On Friday night the Rangers visited a champion Townsville side at their fortress, and were never really in the game, going down 83-66 after the Fire got off to a flyer.

The Rangers were uncharacteristically inaccurate in their shooting, going as low as 33-percent at some stages, before tidying that up in the final quarter.

The usual suspects, Sara Blicavs, Steph Cumming and Natalie Novosel all toiled hard, but were ultimately overcome by a powerful unit.

It was then on to Sydney to face league-leaders Sydney Uni Flames who came into the match in ominous touch.

But the Rangers were in the groove early and lead by four points at quarter-time and six at the major break.

The Flames then started to get their game up and running, but the Rangers continually had the answers, and led by six points heading into the last term - Steph Cumming and Ally Mallott had combined for 43 points.

But the game’s momentum completely switched in an instance, with the Flames completely running over the top of the Rangers 21-11 in the last-quarter, with the new premiership fancies stamping their authority over the match.

Cumming finished the game with a matchhigh 25 points, while Mallott shot 20 points - for the Flames, Belinda Snell was stellar, putting up 17 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

The Rangers, after three consecutive losses, must get back onto the winners board next weekend against the Lynx, in Saturday night’s home fixture at Dandenong Stadium.

Big guns missing but Panthers still find a way to fire

By Nicholas Creely VIC PREMIER - ROUND 16 (DAY 1) A depleted and inexperienced bowling attack has shown glimpses of a bright future, with Dandenong dismissing the lowly Frankston Peninsula for 230 on day one at Shepley Oval.

With James Pattinson and Justin Butterfield not taking the field, the Panthers were without two of their key lynchpins, but simply had to find a way to keep their top-four spot in check.

It is expected Pattinson will be available to bat next week for the Panthers, with youngster Matt Weitering to come out of the side.

With so much riding on the Panthers putting away a bottom-four side, the loss of the two stars put a dent on Tom Donnell’s plans on day one - the side in general is one of the most inexperienced Dandenong has put on the park this season, with just six players playing the entire season in the top-grade.

Turner, in particular, has been highly impressive since getting his chance last round, with Donnell describing him as an “exciting prospect”.

The last-placed Heat took full advantage early,

with Matt Gapes (54), Liam Tonkin (30) and skipper Luke Walker (74) all piling on the runs before McMaster got the Panthers going with the wickets of Gapes and Walker - the Heat then fell from 2/125 to all-out for 230, an almost trademark of their batting this season, leaving them perhaps 100 runs short of par on a stellar Shepley Oval deck.

But pressure can do funny things, and with a bowling attack featuring Ben Ashkenazi, Jake Wood and Jackson Mockett, the Panthers must not take things for granted next week.

Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne is in an utterly dominant position, carving up Kingston Hawthorn at their fortress at Casey Fields.

Winning the toss and batting, Luke Manders (66), Michael Wallace (95) and skipper Lachlan Sperling (80) flayed the ball to all parts, racking up 8/356 by stumps.

Nathan Lambden (23 not out), Brendan Rose (26) and Dylan Hadfield (23) all chimed in with solid knocks.

Hawks champion James Miller (2/47) was the pick of the bowlers.

DDCA - TURF 1 - ROUND 9 (DAY 2) Berwick v North Dandenong The Maroons have denied Berwick an outright victory, in frustrating circumstances for the Bears at the Cave.

Needing double-points to climb into the top-four, the Bears couldn’t have been better placed after snagging first-innings points last week.

But a plucky Maroons batting line-up batted for 70 overs, grinding out 8/138 by stumps.

Jarrod Armitage (4/25) was the star for the Bears on day two.

Parkfield v Narre Warren After an agonising five-months without a win, Janaka Liyanabadalge has inspired the Magpies to a victory over Parkfield.

Chasing 154 for victory, the Magpies resumed at 1/30, losing a few early wickets, before Liyanabadalge (77) guided his team over the line.

Damien Gamage (23) was solid support for the star batsman, while with the ball, Matthew Aslett (3/40) and Shane Bell (3/35) did all they could.

Dingley v Cranbourne The Dingoes continue to shock and after powerfully dismantling Cranbourne, still have a chance to make the Turf-1 finals.

Restricting to 196 last week, Steve Spoljaric’s group would have been extremely confident of knocking the runs off with ease - instead, Andrew Dalby (4/32) bowled his side to a stellar victory.

The Eagles were dismissed for 129 off 67 overs.

Hallam-Kalora Park v Springvale South The Hawks have sent a statement as the official team-to-beat, grabbing a further hold on top-spot over Springvale South.

The Bloods, chasing 248 for victory, just continually lost wickets, and despite managing a decent flow of runs, couldn’t find a partnership that clicked.

They were bowled out for 202, with skipper Steve Gilmour (3/43) finding some wickets and Leigh Booth (3/25) ripping through the middle-order.

Buckley Ridges v Dandenong West The endeavor of Dandenong West can never be questioned but Buckley Ridges had enough class to get the job done.

Chasing a formidable 280, the Bulls battled hard, with Greg Siwes (53) playing a strong knock early that allowed them to push for a result.

However, they fell well short, bowled out for 193.

Heinz-Southern Districts v Mordialloc Set just 125 to win, the Bloodhounds got their pretty easily, and remain entrenched in the four for yet another week.

They finished on 7/197 off 80 overs, with Lee Brown (3/64) the best with ball.

Dandenong City rebounds with a vintage display

By Nicholas Creely NPL 2 - EAST REVIEW (ROUND 2) Dandenong City has bounced back from its disappointing clash with the Thunder, thumping a hapless Richmond City 5-0 in a slick performance at the Frank Halohan Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Not able to get their game up and going against their cross-town rivals last Friday night in front of a packed local crowd, the City were in search for their vintage form, and looked on from the outset.

The City rolled out a fresh face to the senior side, with Jayden Unmack impressing in his debut, while Ljubo Milicevic made his return.

After 17 minutes of City dominance, Shaun Kilipovic found the back of the net to give his side a 1-0 advantage.

But for the next 27 minutes neither side could find a way through the defense, before City were awarded a crucial penalty - Kilmar converted, giving City a commanding 2-0 lead before the break.

The City was then merciless, showing the crowd why they are considered one of the heavyweights for this year’s premiership.

In the 62nd minute, a slick set-up by Kilipovic gave Enes Sivic a simple goal, before only moments later, last week’s goal-scorer James Kelly found the net and gave the City an ominous 4-0 lead.

And then to rub salt into the already painful wounds of Richmond, Kelly once again saluted the crowd for his second goal, third of the season, and fifth for the dominant City.

It ends a harrowing week after a horrible loss to their greatest rivals to kick off the season, but the quality and depth of the City roster shone through.

In a week in which the A-League expansion talk continues to grow legs in the Dandenong area, the pressure was on once again for the region’s elite sides to continue to push their case and they delivered in spades.

The quality of players within the area is highly impressive, and both Dandenong teams will feel well placed to continue their form next round, and hopefully find themselves in a position to be promoted to the top-tier in the near future.

An incredible 12-month period of success has elevated to new heights, with the Cranbourne Cricket Club tasting sweet victory at the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash at the MCG against GCA’s East Belmont on Wednesday morning.

Some famous names, such as Ponting, Warne, McGrath and Gilchrist have all had their time on the G’, and now it’s time to marvel at the exploits of some of the names the powerful club at Casey Fields possess.

It all began back in November with 16 teams, from each cricketing region across Victoria competing in a round-robin to decide Victoria’s best country team.

And it all came down to two evenly matched teams, one from the other side of town.

East Belmont elected to bat first, as the MCG bathed in sunshine on a perfect Melbourne morning.

After a solid start to their innings, the evergreen Matt Chasemore drew first blood, trapping a hapless Andrew Baars (6) in front LBW, leaving the Lions 1/25 off four overs.

Then moments later, Cameron Kelly snared the dangerous Sean O’Neill (25), who skipped out to strong start, but was caught-behind.

It was slow going for the Lions, who looked to build and maintain a partnership, but every time some momentum swung their way, the Eagles were able to swoop in and grab a vital wicket.

The Eagles kept them to just 107, with Steven Spoljaric (2/15), Matt Chasemore (1/13), Cameron Kelly (2/19), Jakeb McVicar (1/38) and Stuart Plunkett (2/5) among the wickets.

And the Eagles started fairly slowly in their chase, reaching 1/30 off seven overs, before Brandon Tyzzer (29) fell with the score at 2/59 off 11 overs.

Enter the legendary duo of Spoljaric and Chasemore, who accelerated for the Eagles, getting them to 3/96 before Chasemore was caught off the bowling of Chris Williams for 39 off 35

Leopardstown leaves them for dead Ready2Race alumni Leopardstown secured his maiden metropolitan win Thursday night at Sandown Park.

After a fair getaway Leopardstown found the rail and looked to threaten early leader Eaton Bale. Leopardstown took the lead approaching the home bend and dashed away to win by an increasing nine lengths in 41.96.

Trainer Chris Johannsen was relieved by the win after many luckless outings.

“He’s been unlucky in a lot of his races. He deserved a city win so I was delighted he was finally able to do it. He’s very strong, once he got to the front I was pretty happy as I knew there was little chance of them running him down,” said Jo-

hannsen.

The win was Leopardstown’s first at Sandown Park after 12 attempts.

“He’s matured late. He’s got better with age and learnt to race properly in the last few months, prior to that he was a bit erratic.”

Leopardstown was purchased following heats of the 2015 Ready2Race auction series by Crocmedia’s Off the Bench team. Off the Bench is a radio show hosted by Craig Hutchinson aired on Saturday mornings via several radio stations throughout metropolitan and regional Victoria.

“I listen to the show and they chat about the dogs every so often, it’s good promotion for the industry.”

Ian Wood from The Golden Paw Syndications assisted the Off the Bench team at the auction series.

“We went planning to buy five greyhounds however we were only able to get four,“ Wood said.

“The fifth was supposed to go to the winners of their Chase of the Year - an AFL player who had the best run down tackle and a listener who voted in the competition.“ Leopardstown was withdrawn from the Ready2Race finals due to injury.

“We rang his owner at the time (Des Dooley) and asked what price he’d be happy to sell Leopardstown for,“ Wood said.

Dooley agreed to sell Leopardstown for $5000.
