A Pakenham woman has warned of the dangers of imported glass after a nasty slip in the shower resulted in a threeday hospital stay. Barbara Ward was showering in her unit about 1pm on Friday when she slipped and fell against the shower screen, impaling herself on shards of glass. She was able to pick herself up and call an ambulance but with cuts on her back up to three centimetres deep, Ms Ward said she was lucky to be alive. “The shower screen was pushed in and broken into large slices which were embedded into my back. I was basically impaled,” Ms Ward said. “I’m just lucky it didn’t puncture a kidney.“ After consulting with health professionals and those in the building industry, the 64 year-old has now made it her personal mission to warn against the dangers of dated glass. “One guy said he sees it all the time with this glass. He told me he’s always out replacing broken shower screens in older showers,” Ms Ward said. “I’ve heard horror stories ... just recently a mother had sat her child next to the shower and the glass just exploded. “It could happen to anyone at any time.” Child accident prevention foundation Kidsafe recommends only installing shower screens that comply with Australian Standards AS/NZS1288 and 2208 and are made of grade A toughened glass or grade B wired glass. These standards were introduced nationally in 1989; however Ms Ward said many older Pakenham homes pre-dating the regulations contained showers with “cheap, unsafe, often imported” glass. A Kidsafe spokesperson said if a home was built before the mid-1970s “it is very likely that very little safety glass was installed”. Ms Ward said she now knew her 40 year-old shower didn’t comply with Australian standards, something she

Country legend strummin’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A long-overdue accolade has been bestowed on Narre Warren South country music legend Gary Ellis. The 80-year-old singer-guitarist imprinted Tamworth’s cement pavement on 28 January after being inducted in the Australian Country Music Hands of Fame Cornerstone. He said it was the greatest day of his long, colourful life. “I’m basking in the honour,” he said. His handprints joined the likes of Slim Dusty, James Blundell, Chad Morgan, Jimmy Little, Troy CasserDaley, Kasey Chambers and scores of other notables. Many peers said the induction was too long in coming for Ellis whose prolific career spanned 65 years. There are a few things he insists on - recording with his own voice in good diction, with live musicians, and retaining an Australian country music sound. “The important part of country music is it’s a story. Your diction has to be very good so people can understand you. “These days the percussion is so loud you can’t hear the story!” Growing up in Glen Iris, his early love of horses led him to a life-long love for country music - which often hit themes of dogs and horses. Ellis first got a taste for the big time performing songs and circus tricks as a kid with his friends in his backyard. Proceeds went to a blind baby charity, after taking out a cut to buy some biscuits and soft drinks. He built his name and made a lot of money by regularly winning talent quests on radio, performing in dance
halls and sideshows, then travelling and performing around Australia. He learnt stagecraft from old showmen - who were hard and had learnt by trial and error how to control an audience of all sorts of people. “It’s a huge study that no school can teach you.” He said there were ways to tell when an audience was “into” the show. It was always best to leave a crowd hungry for more. His career hit soaring highs, with him being a regular on Channel 7 during TV’s debut in Australia in 1956. He was on TV twice in its first week on air, landed his first recording contract when they were “as rare as hen’s teeth” and was a regular on radio 3DB’s Hillbilly Hour. At the time, many country and western performers crossed over into the burgeoning rock-‘n’-roll trend. “Our heart was in country but rock and roll was closely related. “We were able to swing over with our guitars.” Ellis also plunged into deep lows when he succumbed to late nights and alcoholism in the 1960s and ’70s. Thus he lost his marriage and his vast TV, radio and stage audiences. “I was still singing around the place but I wasn’t wanted.” But Ellis sobered up and rebuilt his career 16 years ago. In that time, at an age where most are retired, he has recorded up to 10 albums of tracks that still top country radio charts across the world. He’s still recording, though he can’t play guitar like how he used to, and hasn’t had a drink since 1973. “I’m still bright as a button,” he said.

Hospitals maintain performance targets By Victoria Stone-Meadows Hospitals in Casey have performed well despite the enormous number of patients presenting to emergency rooms over the summer. Figures released by the State Government show almost half a million people found themselves in emergency rooms at hospitals in Victoria this summer which equates to a 24 per cent increase over the past six years. Locally, Casey Hospital in Berwick and Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre had an overall increase in patents but met key performance benchmarks despite the influx. According to the Casey Hospital’s emergency department, between October and December last year, 16,482 patients presented to emergency, a 5 per cent increase on the same time in 2015. Director of Emergency Medicine
for Monash Health Dr Neil Goldie said the large number of births in the growing region contributed to the increase in patent numbers. “The south-east of Melbourne is one of Australia’s fastest growing regions and is experiencing an unprecedented baby boom,” he said. “To meet the increasing demands of our growing community, the $134.9 million Casey Hospital Expansion Project will deliver additional beds across a range of clinical areas including maternity, intensive care and surgical wards.” “Construction is expected to start this year, with an expected completion in 2019. Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre, while not an emergency hospital, also experienced an increase in patents but delivered services in line with expected rates.
The centre reduced the number of patients on the elective surgery waiting list from 906 at the end of the December 2015 quarter to 719 at the end of this December. The hospital treated 97 per cent of its 203 category two urgent elective surgery patients in the December quarter. It also treated 50 per cent of the hospital’s category one elective surgery patients within seven days, well under the 30-day targeted benchmark. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the Government’s investments in local hospitals will see their performances improve further in the coming years. “Our record investment in health means more patients in Cranbourne will get the care, treatment and surgery they need sooner,” Mr Perera said. “With more paramedics on the road, ambulances will be able to respond to
life threatening emergencies in Casey even more quickly.” Ambulance response times in Casey have stayed steady with the average wait time for code one emergencies of 12.21 minutes in the last quarter of 2015 compared to 12.16 minutes in the second quarter of 2016. Shadow Minister for Health Mary Wooldridge said the ambulance response times in Casey show that Premier Daniel Andrews has not kept his election promise to improve ambulance response times. “Daniel Andrews was happy to talk big before the election but clearly is failing to deliver and Victorians are losing out,” she said. “The Andrews Government is failing to deliver the improved ambulance service Casey families expect and deserve.”
Goods gone in break-in Some big-ticket items including a fridge and a television were stolen from a newly built house in Clyde North on 9 January. Police believe between 4pm on 9 January and 11am on 10 January, unknown people have forced their way into the house on Ellaroo Circuit via a rear garage door. Casey Crime Investigation Unit have released images of the stolen items in the hopes members of the public will recognise them. Shots fired into business Police are seeking witnesses to a drive-by shooting on the night of 21 December in Lynbrook. A single bullet was shot into an upper floor window of a business in Commercial Drive, Lynbrook, between 7.20pm on 21 December and 4.20am on 22 December 2016. A dark coloured four-wheeldrive was caught on CCTV in the area at the time and police believe the car was involved in the shooting. Two Hallam Primary School students last year inspired schoolmates to pitch in to help families in crisis. Chanelle and Fathima, who both started high school this year, led the effort in filling more than 25 boxes as part of the Food for Families appeal by Wesley Mission Australia. They spoke at assemblies to drive awareness and donations. Chanelle was mindful that some people didn’t have the luxury of eating a snack after school. “People who are homeless... may have one meal a day that isn’t even a nice meal.” Her friend Fathima said small acts of kindness made a difference. “There are lots of children that are our age and don’t get all the stuff we get. “It’s really important that they at least get the basics - food is one - because some people can’t afford it.” In Casey, 104 donation boxes and bags were filled with items like pasta, toilet rolls, sandwich spreads, nappies, school snacks and gifts. About 47 tonnes - in more than 3000 donation boxes and bags - was collected for the appeal from across greater Melbourne. Wesley crisis and homelessness manager Janene Evans said the community’s continued generosity was important with homelessness on the rise. “With Australia facing an affordable housing crisis, we can safely predict that the 47 tonnes of goods will go a long way to helping struggling families throughout 2017.” The appeal was supported by 235 volunteers, 234 workplaces, 99 schools and kindergartens and 152 individuals.
An unknown man suffering from a shallow stab wound unexpectedly turned up at a house on Blue Gum Court in Narre Warren over the weekend. The disoriented man, believed to be in his early forties, knocked on the door of a house about 6.20am on Sunday 5 February, but was not known to the residents. The residents tended to the man’s wound as best as they could before calling an ambulance to the address, and the man was taken to hospital for observation. The residents did not see any cars in the court, and believe the man walked to their door. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Shaky ground I suppose people will prefer to know some idea where the Selwyn Fault runs. The geological maps I have, show it running more or less along the Frankston-Dandenong Road, for a bit. Interested professors of geology and engineering, do seem to agree that earthquakes are unpredictable. They say things like “mountain building" from earth movements is continuing in Australia. I am disinclined to compare apples with gumnuts - Japan is known to have a lot of quakes. New Zealand has a large fault running in the middle, called the Alpine Fault, it runs between two tectonic plates. One map I have shared is from the Department of Mines, a while back. It’s my understanding, if located there, and I have three geological maps that say so, the effects of a quake could be experienced, well across the City of Casey. Without official at-risk status, builders and developers and people building public works and shopping centres, etc, are not required to adhere to standards and regulations, relating to earth tremors or quakes. So far I have been told, there is officially not a risk in the City of Casey. People might check out Wikipaedia’s “List of earthquakes in Australia" for the brief history of Selwyn Fault. Try the dates, 1855 and 1932. We are talking significant quakes of Richter scale magnitude 5.5 or close to. Interesting reading, I would recommend it. sincerely, Karen Young, Hampton Park.

Re: letter (News, 2 February, Not happy). Terry, you made a couple of comments regarding councillor phones and entertainment. It is true councillors have a mobile phone to contact residents and get information regarding the community and to inform us of meetings. I also have my personal phone which I pay for myself and use every day. As for the entertainment I have been invited out by many groups in my role as a councillor and I have not burdened the ratepayers of one cent. If at any time you want a coffee and a chat I will be more than welcome to explain my mobile phone use to you and where I have been invited out by various groups within the City of Casey. It is ridiculous that these councillors want their cake and eat it.They must be stood down and removed from office for this erroneous way of staying in office, paid high salaries

The Minister for Local Government must change the law that before being sworn in as councillors, an oath/declaration must be taken by the relevant elected councillor that they will not be affiliated to any political party. If the cap fits I refer to the following article (News, 2 February, Tolls rise: freight fraught with fear). The article states: “However, the daily toll cap of travelling in a heavy commercial vehicle on Melbourne’s other major toll road, EastLink, is $16.01.” Unfortunately this statement is incorrect. EastLink does not offer daily toll caps. EastLink tolls are always charged on an individual trip by trip basis. The toll for a single trip by a heavy commercial vehicle using a tolling tag on EastLink ranges from $1.07 up to a toll cap for the trip of $16.01, depending on the entry and exit points. Roundabout way In response to recent comments made by Casey CEO Mike Tyler and Councillor Sam Aziz, I ask the following: as Casey is only paying 24 per cent of the cost, if Cr Aziz states the cost alone to Casey is $4m then the total project must exceed $16 million. I would strongly challenge Cr Aziz to be forthcoming with these cost estimates and transport assessments that support his outrageous and fabricated claims. Why not pluck another figure out of the air? Why not do the right thing and tell the residents via a formal communication - my answer because it’s fabricated cobblewash. This whole process is disgraceful that council thinks it’s OK to suggest new possibilities and then the mayor makes a statement like this three weeks before councillors see anything for the vote on 21 February at council. Councillors know nothing and have been kept in the dark. I think residents need to make themselves available and get to that meeting to hear the justifications for this complete and unwarranted vandalism of our estate. This whole process shows no respect for residents. On Friday 11 November I received an
email from Keri New of the planning department saying the roundabout is not able to be moved and at a meeting with other residents and Cr Aziz, on Monday 14 November, Keri New stated that many Casey departments had been involved in the process including transport, recreation, planning and engineering, yet Keri New also stated: “No objection had ever been raised by council to challenge the new proposed location." Its seems this decision was made a long, long time ago and I have become the personal scapegoat. It would be difficult I think to find another example of incompetence of this level and magnitude on behalf of a local government anywhere in this state. Michael Ball, Narre Warren South.
Casey's eye on cash The Victorian Essential Services Commission recently advised that the Local Government Minister’s rate cap for the 2017-'18 financial year will be two per cent. All councils have until 31 May 2017 to notify the commission if they intend to apply for a rate cap variation above two per cent. To date, Casey Council is the only metropolitan council to notify the Essential Services Commission of its intention to apply for a rate cap variation this year. Only five other councils have advised the ESC of any plans to apply for a rate cap variation. They are all rural councils. The minister’s two per cent rate cap for 2017-'18 is very generous.The annual rate of inflation is only 1.5 per cent. This means that prices have fallen markedly over the last year and that inflationary pressures are weak. There is no evidence that inflation is likely to increase over 1.5 per cent in the next year. One of the factors that has kept inflation low has been record low growth rates in wages and incomes. Residents in the south-eastern suburbs have been hit hard by government austerity cuts and well above average unemployment and underemployment rates. Casey council has no case for a rate cap variation above two per cent. Mayor Sam Aziz has advised Casey plans to spend money on a council junket to China this year. Casey has kept secret how much it paid a consultancy firm to conduct a “sham" survey for a “People's Planning Committee" in Casey. Casey’s 2016-'17 rate cap application to the commission saw $250,000 spent on a failed cap variation application. Other councils paid no more than $40,000 for the same service. Boys and their toys By Victoria Stone-Meadows Senior citizens from the Lifestyle Village at Casey Fields in Cranbourne have been building and selling toys in their woodworking group to raise money for the Monash Hospital children’s cancer centre. Members of the group raised $1000 through their project, which was matched dollar for dollar by the Lifestyle Corporation and donated to the centre. The group of four men from the village sold the toys they made at craft markets to raise to money to donate to the children’s cancer centre. The lifestyle woodworking
group delivered the donation to the centre on Friday 3 February, where they were given a tour of the centre. In a newsletter distributed to residents of the village, Keven Sparrow said the experience of donating to the centre was a great way to top off the group’s hard work. “It was good to see the result of the hard work and efforts the guys put in through 2016, great work gents,” he said. “The social committee should also be thanked for helping us purchase the saw we needed, without it we would have struggled to achieve what we have done so far.”

Same-sex union push By Victoria Stone-Meadows A new campaign aimed at politicians to change the Marriage Act to allow samesex couples to marry has been launched with a forum in Berwick to mark the occasion. Members of the community from across Casey attended the event at the Berwick Inn on Tuesday 7 February and heard from guest speakers about the new campaign. The Equality Campaign is a joint effort between Australian Marriage Equality and Australians for Equality that aims to get people from across all communities involved in the fight for equality. Director of Australian Marriage Equality Tim Peppard and deputy director of the Equality Campaign Tiernan Brady spoke about the campaign and what the group is aiming to achieve. Hawthorn Football Club Hall of Famer Russell Greene and daughter Angie addressed the crowd on the importance of equality within society. They also shared touching personal stories of how anti-LGBTQI language has impacted on their family. Tiernan Brady said the campaign was aimed at encouraging people from across the nation to get in touch with their MP and share their stories. “This forum is one of a whole range we are running around the country because marriage equality isn’t an issue that is based in one part of the country,” he said. “It affects everybody, there are lesbian and gay people in every town and every village in Australia, and there are parents and brothers and sisters and family members and friends of lesbian and gay people.”
Despite parliament deciding not to go ahead with a plebiscite on marriage equality, Mr Brady said there were enough people on the ground in support of change that it was always worth campaigning. “Poll after poll in Australia shows there is a majority in favour of this,” he said. “Even a poll here in La Trobe shows a clear majority of people in La Trobe are in favour of this, and there is a really large majority of people in La Trobe that want parliament to pass this.” While ultimately the decision to change the Marriage Act to allow samesex couples to marry will be up to parliament, the Equality Campaign is aimed at everyday people. “I think the important thing we can do in having these constituency events is let people know how important everybody is in making this happen,” Mr Brady said. “Each and every one of us in Berwick or anywhere else has a role to play; your MP has to hear from you and we are getting people to tell their stories.” “The most effective thing in this campaign is not big media, it’s when people in Berwick phone their MP and talk to their MP.” While the push for marriage equality would mean a lot to people in the LGBTQI community, Mr Brady said it was a small change for most heterosexual people. “It’s a simple change that won’t cost anything, it won’t hurt anybody, nobody will be less married, and nobody will be more gay,” he said. “All that will happen is lesbian and gay Australians will be able to get married and the world will move on.”

Parents warned on hot car kids Narre Warren and Pakenham top the callout lists for children reportedly left in locked cars in Victoria in 2016. According to Ambulance Victoria figures, paramedics were called to 1562 cases state-wide last year with nearly 80 per cent of them involving a toddler. In some cases, firefighters were forced to break into locked cars to rescue children who were then treated by paramedics. About 20 per cent of the children needed medical treatment with 15 taken to hospital.
The highest suburban callouts - including possible false alarms - were in Narre Warren (30) and Pakenham (27). Some of the other highest incidences were in Dandenong (20), Berwick (16) and Cranbourne (12). On 2 February, the State Government launched a Never Leave Kids in Cars campaign to stress the heat-related dangers to children. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said it was disappointing that so many people were putting a “loved son or daughter” being put at risk of serious injury or death.
Children were at particular risk because their body temperature can rise up to five times faster than an adult, Ms Mikakos said. They lose fluids quicker, become dehydrated and can suffer life-threatening heat stroke and organ damage. Ms Mikakos re-iterated the legal penalties to parents and carers - fines of up to nearly $3700 and up to six months’ jail. “Hot cars kill - so there are no excuses and no exceptions.” State Health Commander Paul Holman of Ambulance Victoria said tests
had found that on a 29-degree day, the inside of a car could reach 44 degrees in 10 minutes and 60 degrees in 20 minutes. “Even if you’re just ducking into the shops - you might get distracted or bump into someone you know. “Time can tick away much quicker than you realise.” Mr Holman said that some of the callouts were accidents, others appeared deliberate. He urged parents to keep their keys in their hand as they were getting children and shopping in and out of the car.
Citizens against crime By Victoria Stone-Meadows CITY of Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon will be hosting a law and order forum as a private citizen, separate from her role as councillor, later this month. The forum will bring together local residents and members of State Parliament to discuss alternative ways of approaching and dealing with crime and crime prevention in the community. MLCs Gordon RichPhillips, Georgie Crozier and Edward O’Donohue are the guest speakers at the forum. Cr Stapledon said she decided to run the forum as a citizen separate from council as an effort to avoid politicising the issue of crime in Cranbourne. “I decided to do it this way because the people of Cranbourne are saying to me
how they are not feeling safe in the community or in their homes,” she said. “It is important not to politicise it but listen to people who may have a solution to address crime prevention, family violence, policing, sentencing, and help to rehabilitate offenders.” She hopes that through discussion and the sharing of alternative solutions at the forum the politicians will have a better idea of what the community is facing and their needs. “It is about offering an alternative and hearing from the community and getting feedback to get the policy right for these three members of parliament in the future.” Cr Stapledon also hopes that through leading forums and discussions such as this there will be a greater focus
on crime prevention programs at a grassroots level. “We in Cranbourne know we have the highest rates of family violence and that drugs and alcohol are a huge contributor to that,” she said. “We have a liquor outlet on every corner, our policing levels are low despite strong advocacy, and there is no disincentive for doing the wrong thing; we need to address that.” “We need to make sure funding for programs is longer term, especially around family violence in particular; short-term announcements are not going to bring about long-term outcomes.” The law and order community forum is on Wednesday 15 February from 7pm at the Cranbourne Bowls Club, with registration for the event closing at 5pm 14 February.
Burglar in a bigger bite Police are investigating an alleged burglary at Domino’s Pizza in Pakenham on New Year’s Day. Pakenham police have reported that an unknown offender wearing a hooded jumper with an unidentified logo on the back forced his way into the rear of the store on the Princes Highway about 6.40am. Police say his entry activated an alarm, and he fled via the rear entrance. He is described as being of average height. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A 40-year-old man has sustained minor injuries after an attempted robbery in Pakenham on Sunday. Police said the victim was walking along a footpath parallel to the Princes Highway, behind the properties on Macquarie Circuit, at 2.20pm when he was approached by a group of five males. Police believe the group demanded the man’s phone and he was attacked when he refused. Anyone who may have CCTV or anyone who may have witnessed the incident are asked to ring Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police believe 16 shots were fired into the Henry Street tattoo parlour at about 12.35am on Tuesday 20 September. Neighbours who woke to the sound of gunfire reported seeing two cars, one white and one possibly red, drive from the scene. Police are yet to confirm whether the shots came from the cars. Ms Hansen said she had been operating at the site for three-anda-half years without issue. “This is my livelihood,” she said. “Whoever did this is a coward.” No-one was in the premises at the time of the shooting. Robbed in sleep By Cam Lucadou-Wells A MAN with an ice habit and an acquired brain injury has been accused of robbing two dementia patients as they slept at their Kooweerup aged care facility early on 19 September. Lee Muscat, of Pakenham, was refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court later that day over an alleged overnight crime spree including an attempted car wash ram raid, a police pursuit and attempting to steal a car, a truck and a mobility scooter. He told the court he had little memory of the incidents. The bail hearing was told Muscat had been identified on CCTV using a stolen 1995 Toyota to ram coin dispensers at a Pakenham car wash on Racecourse Road on 18 September.
Muscat was allegedly at the premises for 50 minutes. He failed to take any coins but caused thousands of dollars of damage, police alleged. That night, Muscat allegedly broke into the office of Pakenham Caravan Park. An awoken manager was told by Muscat to “get the f*** away or I’ll smash your face in”, the court was told. Muscat allegedly sped off and was seen by Cardinia Highway Patrol members a short time later driving through a red light at Princes Highway and Racecourse Road. During the police pursuit, Muscat allegedly reached 158 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. Police called off the chase when Muscat turned off his headlights and drove around a roundabout on the wrong side at Manks Road.
The car was found abandoned and incinerated after apparently hitting a tree at Rossiter Road, Kooweerup. Police alleged that Muscat admitted to placing papers under a car seat and lighting the car after the crash. The car had been stolen from a Pakenham shopping centre car park on 16 September. At 3am on 19 September, Muscat allegedly broke into the aged care facility about 500 metres from the crash site. Two nurses allegedly saw Muscat at the front reception, run down the corridor and enter two patients’ units where he allegedly stole their belongings. He was accused of using a screwdriver to force locks and ignition
barrels of a Commodore, a truck and a mobility scooter in attempted thefts at the facility’s car park. About 6.50am, Muscat was found holding up a hammer at police on Rossiter Road. MELBOURNE v BRISBANE Wild weather could not stop the electric atmosphere at Casey Fields on Sunday, where the Dees fell short by 15 points against the Lions in an entertaining and quite bizarre clash. About ten minutes after the opening bounce, where over 6000 spectators braved the ominous storm clouds, rain poured, and then thunder came. The storm was so intense that it forced the players from the ground just three minutes from half-time, with safety concerns an issue. But amidst the weather, the Lions came out on top, and defied the odds, beating a Melbourne side coming into the season as one of the hot favourites. With a strong northerly wind aiding the Dees in the first term, the home side were unable to capitalise, managing just three points, while the Lions failed to trouble the scoreboard. The Demons eventually got on the board through Jasmine Grierson, in a brief moment of exciting flair. But ever since the break in play, the Dees momentum seemed halted, with only moments after resumption of play, Sabrina Frederick-Traub used her athleticism to snap a freakish goal from the pocket to put the Lions in front.And the Lions never looked back, keeping the Demons scoreless for the entirety of the second-half, with the Lions scoring a further two goals via Brittany Gibson and Shannon Campbell. Lions onballer Emily Bates (13 disposals and eight tackles) turned heads with her performance, showing great class in the stoppages, while Frederick-Traub was a constant threat down forward. For the Dees, Karen Paxman was excellent with 24 disposals, while Daisy Pearce was clearly a class above in the extremely wet conditions, racking up 19 disposals and 10 tackles. The AFL has announced the dates and locations for Richmond Football Club’s 2017 Australia Post AFL Community Camps. AFL General Manager Game and Market Development, Simon Lethlean, said the Australia Post AFL Community Camps are an important vehicle in recognising that grassroots football and the community are the lifeblood of Australia’s Game. “The Australia Post AFL Community Camps allow us to highlight the connection Australian Football has with communities right around the country,” Lethlean said. Warriors through at last By David Nagel Eight long years of heartache has come to an end for West Gippsland cricket after the Warriors reigned supreme in a tense Country Week grand final against Warragul at Preston City Oval on Friday. A classic square drive from man-of-the-match Aaron Avery (32 not out) completed a clean sweep for the Warriors, who rode a strong team spirit to the ultimate prize. Captain Dom Paynter was extremely proud after the game. “It’s a big thrill. The Warriors bowled first in Friday’s decider with Paynter (3/3 off 2.1), Williams (2/21 off 5), Hutchinson (2/26 off 10) and Lehman (2/28 off 10) all claiming multiple scalps, but the performance of Wheller (1/20 off 10) was once again special. From his first 39 balls he was scored off just twice, with five maidens giving a true indication of his control. Some great fielding from Avery, Paynter and Bright saw Warragul restricted to a modest 143. Hutchinson (17), Mark Cooper (20) and Rob Elston (26) all got solid starts but the Warriors needed a hero and Avery stood tall. He crafted a wonderful innings, sharing a critical 39-run partnership with Williams (13) to take his team to the
brink of victory. That classic square drive saw the Warriors earn a hard-fought victory. Wheller was also the star of the second day of round 12 on Saturday, with his fighting innings of 44 leading Cardinia (152) to a thrilling victory over Tooradin (135). The Bulls were 9/99 before Wheller and Brayden Browne (19 not out) combined for a lastwicket stand of 53. Run, George, run - it's a marathon effort By Nick Creely As far as marathons go, the Spartathlon in Greece is one of the most gruelling, exhausting and historic foot races on the planet, an event that takes place in September of every year, with only a select few across the globe able to compete. For an individual to even qualify for the race, they have to at-least have ran a competitive race of 100km in less than 10 hours and 30 minutes - staggering requirements. But local runner George Alexandropoulos is determined to one day compete in this phenomenon, and has been making waves across the world for his almost unheard running feats. The 30-year-old is on an app called Strava, which is a global running app which measures distances, and currently leads the world from over 150,000 participants. Since 1 January 2017, Alexandropoulos has ran a total of 1789km, in a total of 87 runs, and over 250,000 minutes of running - and he said that competing in the gruelling marathon is what drives him, and that a realisation that he needed to change his lifestyle forever changed his life. “I basically want to do the Spartathlon in Greece, which is a 246-kilometre race - an ultramarathon, that’s my dream and my goal,” he explained. “First of all I wanted to lose weight I guess - from there I had a passion for running, and I’ve always
had a fear of putting the weight back on and I just stuck with it - I thought I’d keep myself motivated and push myself. “The thing I found hard last year, I put weight on last year because I was trying to work on speed and I was carb-loading, and you need to rest your body when you’re working on speed. “The start of this year I’ve ran every day, and I’ve dropped eight kilos since the start of the year. “I run in the mornings before work and then after work I’ll run, and then on weekends I run as much as I can. “My goal is 15,000km for the year, which I’m actually already ahead of which is good - there’s 12 months in the year, and last month I did 1500.” Throughout an extraordinary period of about three years, Alexandropoulos has lost 58kg and has run some incredible distances, both leisurely and in competition. “In September last year I actually did a 300km run, I did it locally just around my place,” he explained. He is a source of motivation for other Strava users, who marvel at the transformation of his body and commitment to himself. A Spartathlon may await this inspiring runner, who one day may achieve his dream and join a list of incredible winners from all across the world. No Australian has ever done it, but he aims to be the first.

Audi gets a nip and tuck By Ewan Kennedy Late in 2016 the Audi A3 and S3 ranges were given a comprehensive upgrade. They have a facelift and tail-tuck, revised engines, additional technology, added safety assistance systems, standard MMI satellite navigation on all models, and higher levels of equipment across the board. Depending on the model, the Audi A3 / S3 has up to $7000 in additional value over the outgoing car which, incidentally, was voted World Car of the Year in 2014. The breadth of the Audi 3 range models is impressive. It starts with the A3 1.0-turbo- petrol 85 kW Sportback priced at $35,900, and goes all the way up to the sporting Audi S3 2.0 TFSI quattro 213 kW sedan at $64,500. A six-speed manual transmission is a no-cost option in the S3 models. Audi A3 is sold as a five-door hatch (Sportback in Audi speak), four-door sedan and soft-top cabriolet. Our test car was the $49,500 2.0 TFSI quattro with the S Tronic Sports automatic. An S line sports package, at $4200, was fitted. It adds Alcantara / leather trim, a leather bound sport multi-function, flat bottom steering wheel with shift paddles, and sports suspension with 18-inch alloy wheels.
Metallic paint added $1150; Bang and Olufsen stereo $1750; DAB+ radio $600; and aluminium roof rails $600. Total cost $60,700 to which on-road charges have to be added. The optional sport suspension lowers the body by 15 mm, the electromechanical power steering gains sensitivity and efficiency. Some models can be further optioned with progressive steering, also electrically assisted, and standard in the S3. The single-frame radiator grille is more sharply contoured and wider than in the previous A3; the headlights are flatter with a distinctive outside edge. The rear plays on the width of the new A3 with a horizontal lighting setup and edge above the restyled diffuser. Powertrains are interestingly varied, all imported to Australia are turbo-petrol units: a new-design 1.0-litre three-cylinder with seven-speed S-tronic automatic; 2.0-litre fourcylinder S-tronic automatic; 2.0-litre TFSI six-speed manual and quattro all-wheel- drive; and a 1.4-litre fourcylinder- on-demand S-tronic. The 1.4 TFSI comes with cylinderon- demand (COD) shutting off two cylinders when their power is not required. The engine develops 110 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. The quattro all-wheel drive system has been retuned to provide even more dynamic handling. Among other upgrades it now actively distributes additional torque to the rear wheels when required. Infotainment and connectivity are excellent, with MMI Navigation now standard across the range, along with the rollout of Audi Connect into next year, also as a standard item.
The innovative Audi virtual cockpit, standard on S3, is now offered in the A3, along with smartphone interface for Apple Carplay and Android Auto, both of which are standard on 2.0 TFSI and up. The virtual cockpit features a 12.3inch TFT screen displaying important driving information in animated 3-D graphics. The driver can switch between two views by pressing a button on the steering wheel. In infotainment mode, a central window dominates the
view with space for the navigation map or phone, radio and media lists. The tacho and speedo are displayed as small-dial instruments on the right and left. In the classic view, the instruments are large analogue look instruments and the centre display is smaller. The new MMI system has been re-designed, based on contemporary smartphones, with menus and frequently used functions reached in just a few clicks. The main control features a knob and touchpad for entering letters, numbers and, with single or multi-finger gestures, allowing the driver to zoom in on the map. Sound from the optional Bang and Olufsen audio system in our road test Sportback was impressive, with clear definition throughout the range. The newly-developed voice control system understands a large number of everyday expressions and allows for dictation of text messages.
