Hospital services revamped

By Jesse Graham It was a long wait , but the new Healesville Hospital is finally open.

The hospital was officially opened by Health Minister Jill Hennessy on Monday, 6 February, with a crowd of Eastern Health staff, politicians and community members present to celebrate the day.

The opening follows 17 months of work since September 2015 and $8.8 million in Victorian Government funding to revamp the services, aesthetics and amenities at the hospital.

Starting the day with a Welcome to Country, Wurundjeri elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin said the opening was a “very touching moment for me and many others who were born in Healesville“.

Jail term appeal A Healesville man is appealing a sentence of four months in jail and a year of community work after trafficking ice and cannabis and skipping bail.

George Rallis, 40, was sentenced by magistrate Marc Sargent at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 3 February, after numerous court appearances, dating back to 2015.

Rallis pleaded guilty to numerous charges of possessing cannabis, methamphetamine (ice) and ecstasy, trafficking cannabis and ice, possessing an illegal weapon and failing to answer bail from 2014 through to 2016.

Rallis was first charged in March 2014, after repeatedly selling ice to a covert police operative at the Heales-

munity corrections order, rather than a jail sentence, and noted Rallis’s “positive progress” in drug rehabilitation.

He emphasised that Rallis had cooperated with police and made full admissions when interviewed.

In handing down his sentence, Mr Sargent said Rallis had used his employment at the Healesville gym as a way of finding people to traffick drugs to, and said his offending had been “serious”.

“Even in 2016, you were found with significant amount of drugs at different times,” he said.

He noted that, after an eight-day period in custody, Rallis had undertaken a drug treatment program, and urged him to “maintain that drug-free lifestyle”.

“The applicant has no regard to being placed on bail as he has contravened his conditions a number of times,” a police statement read.

“Police believe that the accused is an unacceptable risk for bail due to his reoffending while on bail. Police believe he will keep offending to make a living.”

However, Mr Sargent said Rallis’s four-month jail sentence would have been a 15- month sentence were it not for his co-operation with police in identifying co-offenders and a supplier and his plea of guilty to the charges.

Rallis’s lawyer urged Mr Sargent to sentence Rallis to a “significant” com-

When first interviewed by police and asked the reason why he was selling drugs, Rallis replied: “I have no reason, a bit of extra money.”

Over the next two years, Rallis was charged with further offences while on bail for the original arrest, including more trafficking and possession charges, and had his bail extended repeatedly.

In one instance, 258 grams of cannabis was found at Rallis’s property after a search warrant was executed in 2015.

In August, 2016, Rallis was stopped by police after attempting to sign in for bail by leaving a note under the door, while having five warrants for his ar-

Mr Sargent said that ice often causes “pain and suffering in the community”, for the people who become addicted to it, their families, and people who are the victims of crimes such as theft which are used to fund drug habits.

For this reason, he said he had to impose a prison sentence.

He said the four-month sentence, with a 12-month community correction order, was a “very great discount” on what the sentence would have been without the guilty plea.

A Magistrates’ Court of Victoria spokesperson told the Mail an appeal had been lodged against Rallis’ sentence, and the matter will be heard in the County Court.

Hospital fully revamped After 17 months of refurbishment works, the Healesville Hospital is servicing patients from around the valley, with Health Minister Jill Hennessy officially opening the venue on Monday.

Ms Hennessy visited the hospital on Monday, 6 February, to officially open the hospital and tour the site, with the venue operational and taking in patients.

Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin performed a Welcome to Country to guests, Eastern Health staff and politicians, and noted that she gave birth to her first child in the hospital.

“I would just like to begin by saying this is one of the proudest moments of my life,” she said.

“I just feel today that, with so much energy, so much advocacy that’s gone into reviving this hospital, maintaining this service and more that we have, I want to thank very much the people who were on the campaign trail.

“This is a very touching moment for me and many others who were born in Healesville.”

The opening follows a long period of works from September 2015, with $8.8 million provided

by the government to rebuild and expend the building and its services.

The new hospital features a new operating theatre, single-bed private rooms and a six-chair renal dialysis unit, as well as a new patient lounge and dining space.

Eastern Health’s Paul Leyden pointed out a brick feature wall in the dining space to guests, noting that it featured the original brick wall from the hospital, brickwork added in the expansion, and new works as part of the recent rebuild, summing up the hospital’s 60-year history.

Ms Hennessy said that private rooms were “the holy grail in the public health system”, and praised the new building’s features.

“I think it is a day worth celebrating today, because not only are we seeing an expansion of some of the excellent health services that will be provided here, but there are new services,” she said.

“To come in the front and see where renal dialysis is being provided with gorgeous windows and natural light, I can’t tell you what that does for the patients and their spirit and soul as they

have to deal with the great challenges of dialysis.

“To come into a health service that is providing more primary care, extra palliative care services, good pre and post ante natal care, to look at how we continue to support communities and provide good healthcare closer to home ... it’s something you should be extraordinarily proud of.”

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish, whose party was in government when the initial funding was announced, said the day was a “proud moment” for her, the community and Eastern Health.

“The first time I walked in, to have a look at where the staff area was, I couldn’t believe how good it was,” she said.

“It’s going to be such a huge morale booster for them and the community, and the word will get around - it’s beautiful.”

Ms McLeish said the new building would service residents in the Healesville area and surrounds, but also residents in the Upper Yarra region, who would no longer have to travel to Ferntree Gully or Ringwood for some services.

Shed has wheels, will scoot

By Jesse Graham Yarra Glen residents will find it easier to get around, with the Men’s Shed unveiling a rentable mobility scooter.

Yarra Glen and District Men’s Shed president George Miller and secretary Alex Lagerwey unveiled the scooter with Optima Batteries’ Graeme Hicks at the shed’s open day on Wednesday, 1 February.

Mr Lagerwey told a crowd of visitors and shed members that the scooter was donated to the shed missing a key and suffering flat batteries and tyres.

“The flat tyres were a pretty easy fix, we got a key cut at the locksmith and the batteries were so flat they were invisible.

In fact, there was none,” he said.

He said that, now the scooter was operational, it would be available for people in the community who became “temporarily immobilised”, due to injury or illness.

The scooter will be offered on a nocharge basis, but anyone wishing to rent it will have to become a member of the Men’s Shed to be covered by the shed’s insurance policy.

“If there are any community member males, they can just join up at the shed to become eligible to use it,” Mr Lagerwey said.

“I think it’ll be a useful community service.”

Mr Hicks then took the scooter on its maiden voyage around the shed’s car park, before Yarra Glen’s Diane Roberts,

whose husband is a shed member and is recovering from a stroke, took the second ride.

Ms Roberts said using the scooter would enable her husband to visit the shed during his recovery without having to walk long distances.

The Men’s Shed currently has 45 members, and the shed is open from 9am-4pm Monday-Friday.

In brief Gas cans ignite fire

Assault on public bus

A careless resident’s hard waste resulted in a fire in Yarra Glen last week, after gas cans were crushed and ignited in the back of a truck.

Yarra Glen police Sergeant Richard Coulson said that at 11.25am on Thursday, 2 February, the compaction unit on a hard rubbish collection truck burst into flames in King Street, Yarra Glen.

Sgt Coulson said the quickthinking driver dumped the load of flaming waste onto the road, which saved the truck from being engulfed - the fire was then extinguished by CFA crews, with the help of a frontend loader.

The street was closed for about three hours, and Sgt Coulson said the fire was caused by a box containing small gas canisters being compacted in the truck.

The canisters are not allowed to be put out for hard waste, but a resident had placed them in a box.

Sgt Coulson said at the height of the fire, the flames reached 10 metres and there were concerns that power lines could have been brought down by the blaze.

Yarra Glen police are calling for witnesses to come forward after an assault on the 685 McKenzie’s Tourist Services Route bus on Thursday night.

Sergeant Richard Coulson said about 8.30pm on Thursday, 2 February, a 27-year-old Healesville man was repeatedly punched by a man who was with a group of two other men, a woman and a young child, while the bus was travelling through Yarra Glen towards Healesville.

The offender is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, with a solid build and was about 20 years old.

The man was wearing a baseball cap, an orange top and shorts at the time of the attack.

Senior Constable Harris said the attack was “totally unprovoked”, and that the victim was now reluctant to catch public transport.

The man is believed to have boarded the bus at the corner of Maroondah Highway and Anderson Street in Lilydale.

Sen Const Harris said police were investigating CCTV footage from the bus, in relation to the assault.

By Jesse Graham An ovarian cancer awareness walk down the Warburton Trail later this month has already smashed its fund-raising goal, raising more than $14,000 by the end of January.

Sue Contarino’s Walk with Me event, which last year saw more than 80 people walk down the trail in support of the teacher and ovarian cancer research, raised $12,762 in 2016.

Ms Contarino said that, by 31 January this year, more than $14,000 had already been collected, with about 300 people to be involved in the event when it comes around on Sunday, 26 February.

This will be the second year that the event is being held, after Ms Contarino was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2013. After treatment, she experienced a recurrence in April 2015.

She said she hoped the walk would encourage women to be more aware of the symptoms for ovarian cancer - which are often mistaken for other illnesses and to ask for a test if concerned.

“They are interchangeable,” she said.

“Women’s bloating can be related to too much pasta, breads, carbohydrates ... you could have intolerances, you could have allergies - going to the loo all the time is simply drinking lots, and being tired? Well, most women are tired, whether they’re working or with their children, and pain around that area of the abdomen is associated with wind or irritable bowel syndrome.

“So there’s a lot of reasons why women tend to turn a blind eye, and doctors don’t push it - this is why I’m trying

After last year’s event, Ms Contarino said two sisters from Queensland got in contact to share their story of losing their third sister to ovarian cancer.

The two will be flying down to Victoria to take part in the walk, tag-teaming the 42 kilometre stretch with their husbands under the team banner of Mary’s Marathon.

BankVic, which last year gave Ms Contarino their Community Hero Award, is also matching dollar-for-dollar donations raised by their staff members

taking part in the walk.

“There are people who are amazing, and especially in the beautiful Yarra Ranges and the Yarra Valley - people who want to give,” she said.

Ms Contarino said she hoped to start a Walk with Me event in every state by next year, to raise awareness and the profile of the cancer.

The Walk with Me event will start at 6am at Lilydale station, and is expected to finish at about 3.30pm.

Dam water’s big release

By Jesse Graham Water quality in the Watts and Yarra rivers will be improved by billions of litres of extra water being released from Maroondah and Upper Yarra reservoirs by Melbourne Water.

Around four billion litres of water is being released from the reservoirs as part of Melbourne Water’s Summer Fresh release, which mimics natural fluctuations in river flows.

The aim of the release is to maintain water quality and move sediment and dirt from riverbeds, improving habitat for insects and fish and surrounding vegetation.

Melbourne Water organises the release with the Victorian Environmental Water Holder (VEWH) to plan the release from the dams.

The Watts River, which flows from near the reservoir, was expected to rise between 40-60cm during the release.

Senior environmental water planner, Cheryl Edwards, said the Summer Fresh release was targeting water quality downstream, in Warrandyte - but there were flow-on effects for animals like the platypus, which feed on insects around rivers.

Audiences at the third Healesville Mini Film Festival on Sunday, 5 February, were transported to an Iran that put a human face on a place and people that most Australians only have knowledge of in the context of war and refugees.

The Yarra Ranges Film Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s choice of director Asghar Farhadiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three films â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;About Ellyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;A Separationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Salesmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is both a leap of faith and a vote of confidence in their faithful audience.

YRFS president Keith Wade said the Mini Film Festival was a unique concept which screened three significant and connected films from one important director on the one day.

He described Farhadi as a giant among contemporary film directors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Farhadiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work concentrates on the lives of ordinary people in family situations

under the stresses that can put pressure on the relationships, something we can all relate to,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Renowned film critic, lecturer in film and television and director of the St Kilda Film Festival, Paul Harris, introduced the films.

On the Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s choice of films, Mr Harris said the format gave people a once-in-alifetime opportunity to see three important films by the same director on the same day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not going to happen anywhere else,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This type of program lifts the bar. People come away from films like these with their minds and hearts more open.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Harris said the thing that most impressed him in the films was that they showed a different Iran. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The views that are expressed in these films is not the official view, and it is also not the way the western media

portrays Iran. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel they have universal resonance to them; you forget they are in Iran, it is personal film-making that anyone can relate to, and they are also beautifully made,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The Salesman has only screened once in Australia and is yet to be released commercially. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The interesting thing is that it us up for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film and with events in America it is doubtful the director will be going there to collect it,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Mr Harris was also impressed with The Memo as a venue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This set up makes a lot of commercial theatres in Melbourne look like phone boxes,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; he said after a tour back stage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very sophisticated ... very comfortable. Healesville should be very proud of what it has here,â&#x20AC;? he said.

VCE art on show in hills

By Jesse Graham The work of talented Yarra Ranges teenagers is being presented throughout February and March, with the council’s VCE Creative Showcase exhibition opening in coming weeks.

The showcase will feature the work from 2016 students’ VCE art and studio art classes in two exhibitions, at Mooroolbark Community Centre’s Red Earth Gallery and Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre.

The Mooroolbark exhibition, which runs from 14 February until 27 March, will have work from Billanook College, Healesville High School, Lilydale Heights College, Lilydale High School, Little Yarra Steiner School, Mount Evelyn Christian School and Yarra Hills Secondary College students.

The Upwey exhibition, which will run from 18 February to 19 March, will have work from Belgrave Heights Christian School, Emergald Secondary College, Mater Christi College, Monbulk College, Mountain District Christian School, Sherbrooke Community School, St Joseph’s College and Upwey High School.

“The theme was lost,” he said.

“Silver gelatin (printing) is a me-

dium that’s sort of been lost over time, I guess.

“Not so much now,” he added.

Mr Starick, who hopes to do a Bachelor of Fine Arts at university, said his work was “experimental”, and used an enlarger in a darkroom to layer his photos.

MECS student, Rachel Wilson, will also display photography work, though hers was shot digitally and uses a woman in a wedding dress in dark environments to explore the idea of reality.

“It’s kind of like, within the ugly world, people create a beautiful situation,” she said.

Little Yarra student, Rebecca André, meanwhile, used resin, acrylic paint and spray paint to create pieces to resemble water in its different forms, and display its importance.”

“I was looking for something that was really universal ... and I thought water really fitted that, because we all use it every day for heaps of things, and it’s so important for life and the economy, and religion and culture,” she said.

“In the first world, we don’t really think about it - we turn on the tap and it comes out.

“You’re not really conscious of it, so I really just tried to impart its importance and its beauty.”

MDCS’ Belinda Schroder will exhibit her fine art pieces, created using watercolour, pen and paper - her intricate works, often depicting faces, dis-

cuss the idea of hidden thoughts.

“Basically, how you keep your deepest thoughts, and things like that, to yourself,” she said.

“I especially ... value that privacy and the actual action of revealing, concealing the on-goings of your mind.”

Upwey student Sam Sharam, will display light boxes made using coloured resin, which will project light into the exhibition space.

She added a personal side to the works, drawing inspiration, composition or colours from photos she had taken at the beach to create the boxes.

“Whether it was from the colour palette or the composition of the photos ... they’re all drawn from specific photos,” she said.

“It’s more about immersive environments - so an audience within a work - rather than just viewing it.”

The Mooroolbark exhibition officially opens at 6pm on Thursday, 16 February at the Mooroolbark Community Centre in Brice Avenue. The Upwey exhibition opens on Friday, 17 February at 6pm.

Fund-raiser for firies is cruising along nicely

By Jesse Graham Eight years on from Black Saturday, and with about $50,000 donated to the Healesville CFA, Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise organiser Stacey Kinsmore is gearing up for the event’s sixth run through the valley.

On Saturday, 11 February, hundreds of vehicles from around the state are expected to roll into Yarra Glen, where the cruise will depart from its new starting point - the racecourse on Armstrong Grove at 1pm.

As with the previous five years, the cruise will make its way through Toolangi and down to Healesville railway station at 2pm, where a sausage sizzle, live music performance and remembrance ceremony will be held.

Ms Kinsmore said the new starting point would be safer for participants compared to the old gathering point in Lilydale and that, though the route would be shorter than in previous years, residents could still watch from vantage points along the Melba Highway.

She said the events brought about

700 vehicles of all kinds - from hot rods, trucks and classic cars to motorbikes and regular cars.

Though the event draws plenty of visitors for the music, sausage sizzle and car-viewing, Ms Kinsmore paraphrased Casey MP Tony Smith and said the cruise was about quiet reflection - both during the drive and during the ceremony.

“Everyone can have that little bit of quiet reflection, in their own space, in their own time, in theory own car, as they go through the area, and we all come together at the end,” she said, She said she hoped to raise $10,000 for the CFA this year, following last year’s $9000 donation, and that small groups may receive a portion of the donated funds if the event was successful.

But Ms Kinsmore said fund-raising efforts were hampered by people joining the cruise along the drive or parking at the railway station and not paying the $10 registration fee and by leaving their rubbish at the event, which she and her husband, Troy, then had to clear up and

dispose of.

“If you don’t have that entrant sticker, and try to turn up at Healesville without it, you will be asked to pay or not park there - it’s just important to be fair on everybody else,” she said.

The event was started in tribute to Kate Ansett, who was one of the 173 people who died during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

Ms Kinsmore said residents wanting to pay tribute during the remembrance ceremony, which started at 3pm at the railway park’s labyrinth, could bring a piece of evergreen to lay in the centre.

Eight years on from the fires, Ms Kinsmore said it was important to give people the opportunity to mark the occasion each year.

“I think it shows that we haven’t forgotten, and that proves it, with the amount of people that do turn up,” she said.

“It’s important, also, to remember that Black Saturday was very bad and it could happen again - it makes people think about their fire awareness as well.”

Once the laughing stock of Hollywood, M. Night Shyamalan is back in fine form with Split, his best film since Unbreakable.

Three teenagers are abducted by Kevin (James McAvoy), a man suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (commonly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) who has 23 distinct identities in his head.

Split is a taut, confronting thriller with multi-layered characters.

McAvoy delivers a tour-de-

force performance as Kevin.

As the focal point of the film, McAvoy makes every personality defined and shifts effortlessly between them, conveying palpable menace, warmth and even awkward humour wherever appropriate.

If he doesn’t get an Oscar nomination next year, then there’s something seriously wrong with the Academy’s standards.

Split isn’t just a tense catand-mouse game between Kevin and Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), the main kidnap victim.

The film is also a compelling power struggle, as Kevin’s two dominant person-

alities, Dennis and Patricia, conspire to keep the other personalities subdued and plot to awaken the ‘Beast’, the deadly 24th personality.

The film has an eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere and Taylor-Joy is engaging as the resourceful, tenacious Casey.

The pacing is excellent, superbly weaving poignant flashbacks into the present conflict, and the climactic twist is genuinely surprising and clever.

Split is a truly excellent thriller and a great resurgence in Shyamalan’s career.

Lever strikes with passion

By Chris Anderson With finals only a month away, the time has come for those who look destined for finals action to hit their best form; and in the competition’s top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the four sides who occupy the finals position had strong days on the park.

The match of the round was always going to be the clash between Warburton-Millgrove and Woori Yallock. Right from Round 1, these two sides looked on the road to finals action.

Woori Yallock, coming off consecutive premierships, had lost some experience and top-end talent over the winter months; however, they still had a core of their premiership heroes that would ensure they would always be around the mark.

Opening the clash with the bat, and although losing an early wicket, the Tigers gained ascendency of the contest through a steady partnership from Ryan Smith (43) and Troy Murphy (35).

A considerable partnership grew and, at 1/97 after 40 overs, the Tigers looked well-placed to build a significant total in the hot conditions.

Smith and Murphy fell before reaching half centuries, but their team pressed on.

Cal Ferguson’s half century through the middle order avoided a collapse which has plagued Woori in recent times and with the score at 4/153, the innings could’ve gone either way.

With their big hitters in the sheds, the Tigers continued to press on against some tight bowling from the Burras, but couldn’t ramp the scoring up over the concluding overs as wickets fell regularly.

When the dust settled, Woori Yallock found themselves all out for 202.

Warburton-Millgrove star David Lever was at his best with the ball, capturing great figures of 5/56.

Woori’s final total sets up an intriguing day two of this contest. The Burras have been rarely challenged over recent weeks, and they will have to be at the best against an explosive attack if they are to chase the runs down.

Mount Evelyn have been quietly going about their business since Christmas.

They hosted Healesville in their Round 12 clash, with a keen eye on building momentum toward finals.

Against some tight bowling from Dermott Fry and Chance Burridge, Mount Evelyn openers Daniel Fraser and Daniel Giblin held their nerve to give their team the perfect start.

In a flash back to the ’good ol’ days’, where teams slowly built their innings, ensured there were plenty of wickets in hand at tea, and attacked over the closing overs; the opening pair ensured the home side had the advantage.

They managed to see out the first session unscathed, and at 0/108 at the tea break, anything was possible.

The pair kicked on after tea until Max Minney finally broke the pair’s stronghold as he lured a false shot from the bat of Giblin for well made 79.

Gareth Fraser joined his brother at the wicket, and with 150 already on the board, played with plenty of freedom as he heaped the pressure on with a swift 40.

This was followed by a quicker, and more brutal innings from Mount Evelyn captain Kane Jones who smashed 49 off 27, and was only curtailed by an unfortunate mix up with his partner.

Throughout it all, Dan Fraser stood masterfully at the wicket, in a rich vein of form which included a century and an undefeated 93, he added another masterful score to his tally, batting out the innings for a brilliant 130 not out.

When it was all said and done, Mount Evelyn’s total had ballooned to an impressive 5/339.

Healesville have battled with the bat this season, and this total looks insurmountable.

As they say in cricket though, if one team can make the runs in those conditions, the opposition have every chance to chase them. Most if it will rely on the team’s experience of Ash and Scott Hamer, and Mark Minney, but if they can use the blueprint that Mount Evelyn have provided them,

One suspects Mount Evelyn’s consistent and steady attack will keep things tight enough for this not to happen. In the final game of the round, Seville were unable to match their stubbornness with the bat, that they showed against Mount Evelyn last round, and were totally eclipsed by an inform Yarra Junction outfit. Batting first, the Blues were skilled for a dismal 40.

Although patient early, the flood gates opened as experienced pairing Kevin Bomford (4/11) and Terry Ottrey (3/3) bewildered their opposition with their guile after Nick Bark opened proceedings with amazing figures of 9 overs, 9 maidens, 2 wickets, 0 runs. Not much else could be recorded for the meek effort, and it was left to Yarra Junction to make the most of the remainder of the day.

Andy Taylor has made the most of his opportunities in recent weeks, and he made hay while the sun shone and cracked it for his first fifty of the season, and with Matt Robinson (32) in the runs again, the Eagles were able to close the day on 3/120, a lead of 80. The ball is now well and truly in Yarra Junction’s court, as an outright victory would only enhance their claims of being a contender this season.

Will they declare overnight in a bid to bowl Seville out and chase what’s left (if there is indeed anything left to chase), or will they bat on, give their batsmen some more time at the wicket and declare in enough time to bowl Seville out a second time.

Four teams up

By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics is excited about the opportunity presented to four of their teams which have qualified to compete in the Athletics Victoria (AV) Shield Finals next Sunday at Lakeside Stadium.

Teams qualified by finishing first or second in their zone based on competitions held since October 2016.

Open Men and Open Women will compete in Division 2 competition against clubs from throughout Victoria.

The Men’s team will hope to finish higher than the third placing from last year, similarly the Open Women team finished sixth in last year’s final.

The Mens under-16s and Womens under-16s go into final with big expectations after a very promising season and a host of talented athletes.

They will compete against some of Victoria’s powerhouse clubs including Box Hill, Diamond Valley and Western Athletics.

Bradley Walker leads the pack in the under 10s Boys 400m race.

Winning a race or event does not guarantee high points scored, so effort and endeavour are essential.

A large, vocal team of supporters will ensure all athletes give their best.

The little athletics competition was highlighted by a relay that ran continuously around the track to raise funds for

the Royal Children's Hospital, all while other events were going on.

The special RCH baton travelled a total of 31.5km.

Well done and thanks to all the athletes and parents who donated their pocket money and ran a lap or three to keep the baton moving.

Next week is a choose-your-ownevent day, an opportunity to record a personal best a week out from EMR Region Championships.

A maximum of four events per athlete with an early 8am start for those wanting to do javelin or long hurdles.

The club welcomes all athletes of any age or ability.

Throughout February, the club will have a special offer to all school athletes wanting to join including a significantly reduced membership price.

Warburton golf stroke results Wednesday 1 February: Stroke and M. McGrann ‘Bag Day’: On a hot day for golf scores, David Murch trumped the field with a sensational Nett 63 (69 ‘offthe-stick’). Craig Brown can feel hard done by, as he also had a Nett 63, and was beaten on a countback! Consequently, the ball rundown only extended to 69 (there were two 66s and two 68s in there as well!). The daily nearest the pins went to Senior Cross (1st), Alan Hubbard (3rd) & to A.J. on the 12th, where he proceeded to 4 putt!

won. This week, one of his regular partners, David ‘Bozo’ Clinch ‘turned it on’.

Healesville bowls results Healesville’s No.1 side played second on the ladder Chirnside Park’s No.1 side at home on their synthetic green on a very warm sunny day, with a wind that blew up every now and then.

Healesville went into the break with a narrow lead 47/44, then began a tense and close battle for the rest of the day, with Healesville hanging on to a slender lead of a few shots, until Chirnside Park drew level with one end to go, making it 77 to 77.

With only one rink left on the green, the result came down to the last end and, unfortunately for Healesville, Chirnside Park got two shots to take the day 79/77 in a thrilling battle.

Healesville’s No.2 side played second on the ladder side, Mitcham 4, at Mitcham and, after beating topof-the-ladder side Croydon 4 last week, had to lower their colours and were beaten comfortably.

Healesville’s No.2 side still clings on to fourth place on the ladder.

Kluger makes Grande entr y Toyota will introduce added performance, refreshed styling and improved convenience to its family-oriented Kluger SUV when a facelifted range arrives in Australia late this month.

Kluger receives a performance infusion with gains to power and torque from its V6 powertrain, which is now equipped with direct-injection engine technology.

The updated V6 petrol engine delivers improved acceleration and overtaking with a substantial increase in power of almost 8.5 per cent to 218kW while torque rises to 350Nm. Making best use of the engine’s upgraded performance and efficiency, the Kluger now employs a new direct-shift 8-speed automatic transmission.

The eight ratios, compared with six previously, benefit Kluger’s performance while improving fuel consumption and emissions by at least 10 per cent on the official combined cycle.

Mid-spec GXL variants gain an 8-inch audio screen, satellite navigation, digital radio (DAB+) and a power back door with the convenience of an independently operated glass hatch.

Top-of-the range Grande expands its suite of comprehensive safety features with rear-cross-traffic alert and supplements its lane departure alert with steering control and sway warning.

Grande, newly specified with front parking sensors, also gains a panoramic view monitor that uses four cameras - front, rear and in the side mirrors to take visibility and safety to new heights.

The stylish, more powerful new Toyota Kluger. 164395 on GX and GXL variants featuring a silver-painted finish, while Grande receives a painted chrome finish.

Tail-lights have been redesigned for a sleeker look and now feature standard LEDs while the Grande is distinguished by a rear bumper chrome garnish.

Newly designed alloy wheels (including spares) are 18-inch with five double spokes on GX, 18-inch with seven outer and seven turbine-style in-

ner spokes on GXL, and 19-inch with 12-outer and 12 black inner spokes on Grande.

Three new exterior body colours include silver, brown and an additional red hue.

Inside, Toyota has enhanced quality with premium materials, soft-touch surfaces, bright accents and greater refinement with silver metallic garnishes on GX and GXL.

Grande is offered with silver woodgrain-look garnishes and blue LED ambient lighting around the dash and doors that add a touch of high-tech elegance.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the facelifted Kluger expands driver enjoyment and offers an even better package for families.

“The latest updates to Kluger are focused on areas that owners will ap-

preciate - enhanced driveability, quicker overtaking, substantially improved economy and the added convenience of new features," Mr Cramb said.

The improved lane departure alert on Grande variants adds steering assistance.

If the system judges the vehicle is about to move out of its lane and the driver has not responded sufficiently to a warning buzzer and light, it will apply light steering force to assist the driver to bring the vehicle back on course.

The system has also been advanced so that it can warn the driver if it detects swaying, which may occur due to driver drowsiness, inattention or distraction.

It does this by combining two pieces of information - data from the camera about the vehicle’s position within the lane, and data on the driver’s steering operations.

Kluger is offered in two-wheeldrive and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations.

Kluger AWD variants use a Dynamic Torque Control system to maximise traction, cornering stability and driver control while also saving fuel.

The compact, lightweight system uses information on vehicle speed, yaw rate and steering and throttle angles to control torque distribution automatically between the front and rear axles.

It saves fuel by driving only the front wheels when the vehicle is cruising, switching to AWD when needed via an electromagnetically controlled coupling in the rear differential housing.
