■ “I like to stay in one place,” says half-century veteran…
Services with a smile In January 1967 the Vietnam War was brewing, Harold Holt was Prime Minister, Ronald Ryan, the last man hanged in Australia, was still on death row and Roger Padfield started his motor mechanic apprenticeship with Patterson Cheney. Fifty years later Roger is the longest serving member of Patterson Cheney’s 600 strong workforce. He quietly clocked up the milestone on 19 January with handshakes and the presentation of a plaque before he picked up his tools and got on with supervising the afternoon shift at PC Trucks Dandenong, one of Patterson Cheney’s nine divisions. “Some of my spanners are older than my colleagues,” said Roger of the tools that have served him well for half a century. “One’s got a bit of a bend in it but it still works.” Roger grew up in Highett, the son of English immigrants and credits his father, a boilermaker,
with steering him towards a career as a mechanic. He had three choices - SA Cheney, the army and another motor mechanics. With some prescience, Roger’s dad thought SA Cheney offered a “safe option” and Roger took up the offer of an apprenticeship at the firm’s South Melbourne car service centre learning how to fix Holdens, Chevrolets, Pontiacs and Vauxhalls. “I didn’t know as much about mechanics as I thought I did,” remembered Roger of his early years as an apprentice. “I learnt a lot, that’s for sure. “In those days we were repairing cars, not just replacing parts. Now it’s cheaper to replace parts and there is a lot more electronics involved. You were lucky to see an electric ignition in my day.” Roger moved to Patterson Cheney’s Dandenong site in the early 1990s. He started on the afternoon shift in 1994 and still clocks on at 3pm and clocks off at 11pm overseeing five mechanics as afternoon supervisor. He only considered changing jobs once in 50 years shortly after finishing his apprenticeship. A

timely pay rise helped convince him to stay. “I like to stay in the one place,” he said modestly. Patterson Cheney’s human resources manager Daniel Waixel said approximately 20 per cent of the team had been with the company 10 years or longer. “Roger’s commitment and dedication is truly valued, we couldn’t be prouder of Roger’s 50 years’ service,” Mr Waixel said. Patterson Cheney CEO Cameron Bertalli remembers a time when he was stopped at a service station in Yea by a driver who knew Roger. “I spoke to a driver there who said Roger was a dead-set legend,” said Mr Bertalli. “He has a great sense of humour, he is great under pressure and goes the extra mile.” Dealer principal Terry Jewson has worked with Roger for 35 years and said “he is a truly valued employee that is extremely passionate about the brand and the Patterson Cheney business”. When he’s not working, Roger’s passion is his dogs - a border collie and a border collie kelpie cross.
He is a qualified agility judge and teaches dog obedience classes. In 1984 Roger and wife Lynne won Tattslotto. They paid off their Cheltenham home and went to England and the United States on holiday. Roger remembers his boss at the time was a “bit panicky” when he found out about the windfall, but it didn’t cross his mind to throw in his job. “The missus would have killed me if I did,” he said with a rueful grin. And his advice to young mechanics entering the profession? “I think the important thing is to enjoy what you’re doing. If you don’t enjoy it, no matter how much you’re paid, it’s not worth it. “It’s a good industry, a lot cleaner than it used to be.” Have you got a long serving employee or someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty you would like to recognise publically? Cruelty probe as dead, starving animals found
In Brief Pestrian hit in Dandenong Emergency services were called to Forster Street in Dandenong to reports of a car crash involving a pedestrian about 2.40pm on Monday 30 January. Acting Station Officer Dale Versteegen from Dandenong CFA said reports of a person trapped were not true. “When we got there, the person was not trapped under the car, she was breathing and conscious and was taken to hospital,” he said. Police believe a car travelling along Foster Street collided with the pedestrian near Mason Street and the male driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, stopped at the scene. Both the male driver and female pedestrian were taken to hospital for observation. The exact details surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing. Maccas' machetes raid Two men wearing balaclavas, dressed in black and armed with machetes who robbed a McDonald’s restaurant in Springvale are still on the run from police. The two men entered the restaurant on the corner of Osbourne Avenue and Westall Road at about 5am on Sunday 29 January. The pair confronted a staff member with their weapons and demanded the tills emptied from both the front counter and the drive through area. The robbers fled through the main entrance and were last seen fleeing on foot east along Osbourne Avenue.
Pen pistol found in drugs raid A man has been arrested at the Dandenong Comfort Inn following the execution of a drugs related search warrant. Police raided the room early in the morning of Sunday 29 January where they said they found a pen pistol, rounds of .22 calibre ammunition, and a knife along with small quantities of methamphetamine and marijuana. A 59-year-old man from Dandenong was charged with drug and firearm offences and has ben bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court at a later date. Two years in jail for bone-breaking movie-night attack A Dandenong man has been jailed for more than two years after he brutally bashed a boardinghouse mate with an iron bar during a drug-fuelled movie night. David Ratcliffe, 51, pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious injury for inflicting multiple strikes that broke bones and lacerated the victim’s head, body, arms and legs. During sentencing on 30 January, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court judge Jack Vandersteen said Ratcliffe and the victim were “very lucky it wasn’t a homicide”. “It’s very clear that you must have repetitively struck the victim with that weapon. “It’s a very serious assault from the top of his head to his ankle area.”

Mr Vandersteen noted that one of the blows caused a deep laceration that was “down to the bone” of the victim’s skull. Another shattered part of the victim’s skull. There were also defensive injuries to his arms including a fracture and lacerations to the right forearm - one of them again down to the bone. Once the victim had been knocked to the floor his legs were lacerated several times by the blows and his right tibia was fractured, Mr Vandersteen said. The assault came soon after Ratcliffe had accused his mate of stealing from him, Mr Vandersteen said. At first, Ratcliffe denied the assault to police. He then said the pair had used drugs during the night and watched movies on TV but was unable to recall the argument. “When the police described the injuries,
there’s no doubt that you were surprised and remorseful,” Mr Vandersteen said. Mr Vandersteen noted Ratcliffe’s most serious prior offence of armed robbery and his history of drug-linked schizophrenia, transience and unemployment. The accused’s drug use started with cannabis 37 years ago then branched into amphetamines, GHB and most recently, ice. He was a different person since sobering up while in remand for nearly three months, Mr Vandersteen said. “But you can see the type of person that you can become. It’s a very destructive, violent person.” Ratcliffe was jailed for two years - the Magistrate Court jurisdiction’s maximum term - plus three further months for failing to appear on bail. He will be eligible for parole after 16 months.

Police have arrested and charged a 29-year-old man from Hallam with attempted murder following the almost fatal stabbing of a Berwick man in Noble Park last year. Police were told the 24-year-old victim and four friends arrived at a party on Ian Street, Noble Park, about 4am on Saturday 1 October. The group was approached and threatened by two males, who got out of a 1998 dark-coloured Holden Commodore sedan with silver rims. Police allege the pair threatened the victim and his friends, who tried to reason with the attackers before running back towards the party. The victim tripped and fell and the men assaulted him, one stabbing him to the chest, stomach and upper leg several times. Police arrested a Hallam man at his BelgraveHallam Road home about 7.50am on Friday 27 January. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday 30 January charged with attempted murder and intentionally cause serious injury.

Seven animals found dead and a further 16 found starved and abused at a Dandenong North property have prompted an RSPCA investigation. Five cats and two snakes were found dead when RSPCA inspectors arrived. They removed two starving dogs, seven cats, a python, four lizards and two frogs. Three of the cats found inside the house required immediate veterinary attention and all remaining animals are now receiving veterinary care. RSPCA Victoria inspectors and Victoria Police attended the property in response to a report of concerns for the animals’ welfare on 25 January. The RSPCA is seeking information from the public after the animals were found inside and outside the property. An probe is being conducted into who was responsible for leaving the animals at the property but investigators have yet to locate the owners of the house. The animals were found without adequate shelter or access to food and water and many of the surviving animals were almost starved to death. RSPCA Victoria Inspectorate Team Leader for the Southern Metro area Stuart Marchesani said leaving animals in such conditions is abhorrent. “All pet owners must take full responsibility for the animals in their care and, if they are no longer able to provide adequate care, we urge them to talk to RSPCA Victoria about their options,” he said. “There is no excuse for animal neglect and those found guilty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act face fines up to $77,730 and two years’ imprisonment.” Anyone with information about this investigation, or with concerns about the welfare of any other animal, can make a report to RSPCA Victoria at rspcavic.org or on 9224 2222.

Sahayla shows her class Starting school is a little more special for Sahayla than most of her Narre Warren North classmates. She was diagnosed with hearing loss when she was eight-and-a-half-months old. Two weeks later she was fitted with her first hearing aids and at age 16 months received bilateral cochlear implants. Sahayla was ready last week to enter her Mary Mackillop Primary School classroom and celebrate how far she’d come with other preps-to-be at Australian Hearing in Dandenong. Mum Emma Maddicks said Sahayla’s speech and language had come a long way. “It’s above many other kids who have full hearing,” she said. “She was tested for speech and language at five years of age and her results were equal to that of a six-and-a-half-year-old. “It’s been a long journey but she’s well and truly ready for this next step.” For years Sahayla has received support through specialist hearing services and early intervention at Australian Hearing. Australian Hearing Dandenong manager Jacinta Gerin said the early years of a child’s life were critical. “So beginning intervention as soon as possible after the diagnosis of a hearing loss minimises any delay in a child’s language development,” she said. “Our role is to help optimise a child’s hearing

Officer headbutted, kicked in short-lived escape bid By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man fled in handcuffs from inside a divisional police van after headbutting and kicking a police officer, a court has heard. Brody Randy Hopkins was sentenced to 18 months in juvenile detention after pleading guilty to a string of drug, vehicle theft and aggravated burglary charges while on youth parole in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 30 January. The court heard police found Hopkins and a female passenger asleep in the front of a stolen $18,000

When arrested and led into the back of a divvy van, Hopkins headbutted an officer’s forehead and bruised the officer’s upper thigh in an attempt to knee him in the groin. Wearing handcuffs behind his back, Hopkins jumped over a resident’s back fence and escaped. He ran for about 45 minutes before having the handcuffs ground off his arms at a friend’s house. Police told the court that Hopkins later claimed he couldn’t remember assaulting the officer because he was in such a drug-affected state at the time. He
admitted to smoking ice and about a gram of cannabis a day since his recent release from youth detention, the court was told. On 1 December Hopkins was arrested after again fleeing from police who found him in a stolen Nissan coupe at a relative’s house in Narre Warren. The court heard that a string of robberies and thefts were to support a drug habit. Hopkins’ detention immediately follows his current Malmsbury stint’s expiration in April. He was expected to be eligible for parole by January 2018.
More residential development is on its way to central Dandenong. Quest apartments, Dandenong Civic Centre, the government services building, and the Australian Tax Office have all opened in the Revitalising Central Dandenong precinct in recent years. Last year a new Salvation Army Headquarters was announced, and the State Government selected Foster Street’s Little India as the state’s first official Indian cultural precinct. A map on the Places Victoria website shows two more sites in the revitalisation zone as sold or committed. Places Victoria’s precincts general manager Simon Wilson said a development agreement for site 10, bounded by Foster Street and Halpin Way, was being considered. “The proposed development is likely to include residential and retail space,” he said. “The temporary pop-up park on part of Site 10 will remain until the proposed development commences, possibly in late 2018. “We are continuing to work with council to enhance community open space in central Dandenong.” Mr Wilson said the land above site 19, at Abbott and Swords streets, was known as site 18 and was sold to a private purchaser in April.” It’s marked on the map as “proposed residential development”. Mr Wilson said that Revitalising Central Dandenong would ensure Dandenong remained the capital of Melbourne’s south-east. The $290 million project started in 2006, and is expected to attract more than $1.2 billion in private sector investment over its 15 to 20-year life. It’s also expected to create 5000 jobs and enhance Dandenong’s appeal as a place to live, work and visit.

Ex-agents face the heat The team behind real estate agent LJ Hooker’s Keysborough franchise will face more than 400 charges following allegations of funds misappropriation. Consumer Affairs Victoria announced on Friday 27 January that it had commenced criminal proceedings in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria against JNT Law Investments’ sole director Truc Thanh Le Nguyen, also known as Judy Nguyen, and employee agent Tri Duc Ngo, also known as Joseph Ngo. A filing hearing will take place on Friday 3 February. JNT operated the Keysborough LJ Hooker franchise, as well as franchises in Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Burwood, Doncaster
and Box Hill. Ms Nguyen has been charged with 216 offences and Mr Ngo has been charged with 188 offences for alleged breaches of the Estate Agents Act 1980 relating to keeping accounts of trust money received, wrongful conversion and false accounts, requirements for trust money to be paid into a trust account, and restrictions on agents purchasing property. Potential penalties include jail time and fines. The Consumer Affairs Victoria director has approved 58 Victorian Property Fund claims totalling more than $2 million from JNT clients for losses arising from missing trust funds. The director also authorised an additional 21 claims for rent money from the balance of the
estate agent’s rental trust account, totalling more than $34,000. The Journal reported in April last year that LJ Hooker’s Keysborough office had been shut down amid allegations of misappropriation of client funds. The company’s head office terminated six franchise branches of LJ Hooker Glen Waverley, including Keysborough, operated by JNT Law Investments, on 21 April due to what it said was “a fundamental breach of its franchise agreements”. The ABC reported that the franchise agreements were terminated amid allegations that hundreds of thousands of dollars in deposits had gone missing.
Music, arts involve young in creating brighter futures Music and arts will help young people in Noble Park to build a brighter future. The Song Room’s Arts and Connect - Youth Settlement Program will kick off at the Noble Park English Language School. Coca-Cola Australia Foundation (CCAF) granted more than $374,000 towards the program, designed to brighten the future of disadvantaged young people and refugee youth through music and arts. The project aims to improve academic and social development outcomes for students to help them engage with education, and enhance their sense of social inclusion and participation in Australian society. The Song Room CEO Caroline Aebersold said the not-for-profit organisation’s tailored, highquality music and arts programs were independently proven to help academic performance, school attendance, and social-emotional wellbeing of young Australians. “This grant will enable us to reach more than 300 disadvantaged teens around Noble Park in 2017, as well as other similar communities in need around Australia - really allowing us to make a difference,” she said. South East Community Links (SECL) received a State Government grant to support its diversity program, to provide financial counselling and mentoring to women at risk of economic abuse. SECL CEO Rhonda Cumberland said the funding, announced on Thursday 8 December, would help to close one of the biggest gaps for women escaping family violence. “Women need support to disentangle their finances from a violent relationship,” she said. “One important step in this process is ensuring women have control over money that is rightfully theirs in the first place.” SECL was established last year by bringing together Dandenong Community Advisory Bureau (DCAB), Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau (SCAAB), Youth Links and youth service Southern Ethnic Advisory and Advocacy Council (SEAAC).

The inaugural Youth Summit on 31 March will mark the start of National Youth Week and welcome young people from across Victoria to discuss issues that matter most to them. “National Youth Week celebrates ideas that young people provide to our state no matter what their background or where they live,” Ms Williams said.

The brothers-in-law at Uncle’s Smallgoods have swapped the traditional bouquet of roses for a choice of two beautifully presented half dozen and dozen stem sausage arrangements which are sure to impress and amaze a meat-loving special someone. “The general response is that it’s great, that it’s really quirky,” said Bert, who added that social media had taken brilliantly to the concept. “The orders placed so far are mainly by females buying for hubbies or boyfriends. Sian Moore of Springvale pleaded guilty to unlicensed driving, dangerous driving, using a mobile phone while driving and failing to stop at the direction of police over the 12 September incident. Police had spotted Moore driving in the righthand lane of McGregor Road with his mobile phone in his left hand about 2.40pm, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 23 January. At the known blackspot intersection on Princes Highway and McGregor Road, Moore was then seen turning right against a red right-hand arrow. A driver of an oncoming four-wheel-drive had to brake heavily to avoid a crash with Moore’s car, the court was told. Police followed Moore and activated their vehicle’s lights and sirens as the accused pulled his car into the Pakenham Inn car park.
Moore then accelerated at a “great rate of speed” through the adjoining KFC car park. Police soon abandoned the pursuit due to the high number of pedestrians and cars in the area. Moore was seen failing to stop at the intersection of a McDonald’s drive-through and BP servo entrance, and was spotted escaping in his car along James Street. When arrested 11 days later, Moore produced New Zealand identification but didn’t have a licence to drive in Victoria. The unemployed accused had lived in Australia the past three years, the court was told. Magistrate Clive Alsop told Moore he’d previously jailed people for similar driving behaviour but took into account the accused’s early plea of guilty. Mr Alsop said he’d be insulting Moore’s intelligence if he lectured him on the dangers of his driving. Moore was convicted, fined $1500 and disqualified from driving or obtaining a licence for 12 months.

Healthy eating is getting easier for Greater Dandenong diners. Greater Dandenong Council has launched healthy dining initiative Healthy Bites to help consumers identify and choose healthier food options at local food outlets. Only 5.7 per cent of the municipality’s residents eat the recommended five serves of vegetables every day, according to the council, and only 53 per cent eat the two pieces of fruit per day as recommended. Healthy Bites also supports food outlets with expert nutritional advice to make their menus healthier. The Healthy Bites sticker will appear next to menu items low in saturated fat and salt, high in fibre, and containing at least one serve of fruit or vegetables. Traders at Dandenong Market and Parkmore Shopping Centre have signed up. The council will roll out the program to other

The City of Greater Dandenong is home to a number of industries that require workers to perform their duties in extreme weather conditions. Catherine Sim, a lawyer at Adviceline Injury Lawyers, said that employers have a duty to manage the risks associated with working in extreme temperatures. “There are some unique health risks linked to working in extreme temperature, and in light of recent weather it is important for workers to understand the effects of extreme temperatures on their health and safety,” said Catherine. For those working outdoors, there are a number of risks associated with heat and sun exposure. The heat, either due to the weather or a warm indoor work environment, can cause various types of heat illnesses. One such illness is heat stroke which can be life threating if not treated immediately. Additionally, employment which takes part primarily outdoors puts workers at risk of excessive UV exposure, potentially leading to the onset of skin cancer. It is important to understand that the temperature alone is not indicative of the risk of a heat illness occurring. There are various other factors to be taken into consideration, including workload, air movement and wind speed, radiant heat sources and personal protective equipment and clothing. The level of physical activity required when working in cold environments can result in sweating, which decreases the body temperature and can contribute to the onset of cold stress or hypothermia. Pre-existing medical conditions can be exacerbated by the cold, and proper training is required for employees who are not experienced or acclimatised to cold work environments. The use of personal protective equipment is paramount in cold storage work, and inadequate clothing or equipment can also lead to cold stress or hypothermia. Aside from cold related illnesses, the likelihood of muscle strain is increased when working

Crowd crows for Luna festivities By Victoria Stone-Meadows Dandenong Market saw in the Luna New Year with a bang this year as the whole community came out to usher in the year of the Rooster. The market was alive with dance, music, food and people from 10am on Sunday 29 January as the celebrations went underway. The family friendly and free event was open to all in the community with all kinds of traditional street foods and entertainment on offer. There was even a special live cooking demonstration with chef, presenter, and specialist food
consultant Tim Hollands. About 24,000 people came to the market for the celebrations and Dandenong Market Marketing Manager Briony Walker said it couldn’t have been a better day. “It was really wonderful and it’s important for us to celebrate these events because we are the home of cultural celebrations,” she said. “We are one of the most multicultural hubs in Dandenong and the Luna New Year Festival was a really great day.” “We are thankful for the performers, food traders, and everyone that came along.”

Looking Back 100 years ago 8 February 1917 Garden plots Editor At the instigation of Crs Abbott and Keys, a motion was passed at the last meeting of the Dandenong Council that the caretaker of the plots has his attention drawn to the state of the plots. The meaning of this is that the caretaker is expected to do more work in keeping the “outside” of the plots free from weeds. Two days per week are now given by the caretaker to keeping the “inside plots” free from weeds. Often the day lasts from 7am ‘til 7pm and for this he received 12/6 per week. He has to provide his own mower, oil, repairs, and all other implements. Councillors admit the “inside” of the plots are kept in good order. Originally there were five plots to look af-

In one of the most action-packed and entertaining Twenty20 tournaments in the competition’s short but exciting history, it’s all set to come down to this - a clash of the titans of such, with the Bucks and Eagles set to battle it out for the Dandenong Club Twenty20 trophy. Both teams have had stellar tournaments with some incredible individual performances and crushing team victories. The Bucks, well they haven’t even lost a game in this tournament, highlighting their dominance with the white ball - more importantly it’s been the manner of their victories - they are not just scraping over the line, they are dictating terms against every line-up they come across. Their line-up is chock-a-block with stars. At the top is Susantha Pradeep who has ploughed 243 runs this tournament at an impressive average of 48.6, while the other opener, Daniel Watson, struck a magnificent and unbeaten 119 in the semi win over Berwick two weeks ago. Luke Fletcher provides coverage with both bat and ball and is a brutal hitter of the white ball, Rajitha Jayathunga is a natural run-maker who has hit some form, while Troy Aust, the reliable skipper, is compiling an impressive season. Sports mentor and bedrock is recognised for support By Nicholas Creely Within the Greater Dandenong community, there are countless people who work hard and contribute behind-the-scenes, and often don’t get the recognition they deserve. In sport, administrators are the building block for a successful sporting club or competition. And on Australia Day, Ross Hepburn was inducted into the Greater Dandenong Sports Hall of Fame after a glittering career as President of both the Dandenong Cricket Club and the Dandenong District Cricket Association. Throughout his long stint within the sporting ranks of Greater Dandenong, Hepburn had a major influence on sport in the south-east area, and has been a mentor to Michael Findlay, the current Dandenong President and recipient of the award last year. In fact, he is only the second recipient of the award since it was introduced by the council. At the award ceremony at Dandenong Park, an emotional Hepburn was proud of his achievements in sport and was grateful for the recognition. “This is a humbling and unexpected honour,” he said. “I’m very proud and privileged to be able to be a volunteer sports administrator in a city that recognises sport at all levels and probably promotes sport at the junior levels more than almost any other. “The sport’s in great shape and the city’s in great shape.” Sophie Molineux was the other recipient of an award, taking out the Sports Person of the Year. The 19-year-old athlete is regarded as one of the most promising women’s cricketers in Victoria and excelled throughout 2016 wherever she played. Dandenong champion Sarah Elliott has announced her retirement from professional cricket with immediate effect after a stellar career representing Australia at the highest level. Elliott, 35, was one of the finest Australian all-rounders to grace the field, representing Australia in 39 matches across all formats, and is remembered for a stellar century in 2011 when the Aussies reclaimed the Ashes. She has become one of the most iconic figures in the rise of women’s cricket in Australia, if not the world, with her exploits not going unnoticed. Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland paid tribute to the impact Elliott made in her cricketing career and her contribution to women’s sport. “We congratulate Sarah Elliott on a wonderful international and domestic career and the outstanding contribution she has made to cricket both on and off the field,” he said. “Sarah proved she could match it with the best players in the world and she should be proud of the way she carried herself throughout her career and the legacy she leaves behind. “We would like to thank Sarah for her service to cricket as both a player and leader, and for her commitment to cricket while also raising two beautiful boys.” Elliott has also captained the Vic Spirit, Victoria’s women’s team from 2005/06 until 2008/09 and has been a major player in the WBBL, with both the Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers. She was the inaugural captain of the Renegades before making the switch across to the Strikers at the beginning of this WBBL season. It is unconfirmed whether Elliott will continue on with the Dandenong Women’s team in Women’s Premier Cricket beyond this season where she has scored eight centuries in a stellar career with the Lions.

Many hands make light work for those Hawks By Nicholas Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW ROUND 9 (DAY 1) Hallam-Kalora Park v Springvale South Well they possess the most consistent top-order batsmen in the competition, and once again they have delivered as the Hawks posted a tricky 7/247 against Springvale South. Ben Hillard (59), Leigh Booth (30) and Jagveer Hayer (42) have been a cornerstone for the Hawks’ success with the bat this season, constantly providing the ladder-leader with solid foundations. Corey Booth (53 not out) then provided the cream on top, with a second consecutive halfcentury, as the Hawks knocked around runs to stumps. It’s going to be a tough chase, but a chase that may define just how serious of a contender the Bloods truly are. Berwick v North Dandenong The Bears are charging towards finals, totally dominating proceedings against North Dandenong at The Cave. The Maroons elected to bat, and with Jarrod Armitage and James Wilcock steaming in, the task was always going to be difficult. And the pair were simply electric early, with Wilcock (2/25) in particularly taking the stumps of the two openers out of the ground and Armitage (4/27) bowling some serious heat - at one stage a pair of bouncers delivered to Caleb Millman were as quick as any deliveries seen in the competition this season. The visitors were rattled ever since then, rolled for just 104 with Clayton McCartney (31) showing his class once again. Berwick are currently 4/151, with Nathan Pilon (84) playing a brutal knock, and eyeing an outright victory next week Dingley v Cranbourne If the Dingoes can do the unthinkable next week and knock off the champion Eagles the Turf 1 competition will go into a tail-spin. Gotch (68) and Buchanan (81) dug in for the visitors, playing gutsy knocks despite constant pressure applied by not only Pattinson, but a raft of other bowlers. But with passion, gusto and plenty of extreme pace, Pattinson tore the Demons to shreds, at some stages almost literally, as the opposition meekly fell away, bowled out for 243 - a 7/31 collapse. His other victims, Seb Gotch, Andrew Kent, Jackson Koop and Patrick Smith all looked second-rate, with Patto bringing out his usual trademark celebration. Rangers unite but the Fire comes out scorching By Nicholas Creely The premiership race has been thrown wide open, with the Dandenong Rangers falling short in a relatively close affair against Townsville at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night. With very little separating the two sides in regards to their positions on the ladder, the match was always going to be hardly fought, but it was a matter of who was cleaner and more accurate with their shooting. It was a special night for the Rangers, who were dedicating the match to The Unite Project, an organisation looking to help youth who are homeless or struggling to make ends meet. For every $3.50 from the ticket price, the money went to The Unite Project as a way of supporting the cause - and the fans were treated to perhaps a taste of things to come in the finals, with the Fire holding out a slow-finishing Rang-
ers outfit 78-92. From the outset, the Rangers weren’t quite at their best, with the Fire shooting accurately and displaying a lot more energy around the court. And they were powerless to stop Suzy Batkovic from putting on one of the performances of the season, with the champion veteran finishing with 26 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Sara Blicavs (24 points, 4 rebounds) once again led from the front, while Steph Cumming (16 points) had her moments and Nat Novosel (14 points and seven rebounds) continues to build into finals. Blicavs said despite the result, they will continue to look forward, and praised Batkovic for her stellar performance. “We have the opportunity to play them again next week which is great - I think we played them in November so they’re a completely different team to when we last played them,” she said post-
match. “I’m up for the challenge - it hurts now but we get another chance. “We knew Suzy was a big target - she is unstoppable when she’s going - but we have to defend everyone on the court.” Blicavs was also thrilled with the large turnout to Dandenong, saying that the fans really rallied behind the true meaning of the night. “I was so happy to see everyone come out - a lot of people were wearing black and pink, but we also have had about 45 enquiries to get our fridges into local cafes tonight which is awesome,” she said. He’s the owner on paper but he’s got a few friends who are pretty excited about the dog,“ Hughes said.

After the star striker received plenty of outside interest from clubs, including some in the A-League, Barnes eventually recommitted to the cause down at George Andrews Reserve. And he has started the year with a bang, scoring a triple as the Thunder crushed the City in a battle of the heavyweights, while also claiming first points in the Jim Memeti Cup. Both sides have had intriguing off-seasons, with the City signing a raft of exciting players as well as bringing over Stuart Munro as their new coach. While the Thunder have had a disruptive preseason, with coach Giuseppe Anastasi pulling out of his commitment to the club, before swiftly signing the experienced campaigner Gianfranco Impellizzeri to the helm, despite very little preparation. The crowd was vast and loud as the two rivals from Dandy strode out onto the beautiful green turf, and it took until the 41st minute, before Barnes got his first strike into the corner. Just minutes later, Thunder playmaker Tomas Murphy made it 2-0, and with the City’s backs against the wall, it seemed like the stars were aligning for the Thunder. Barnes then scored ten minutes later, after a lovely left-footed pass by the returning Muriqi, with the star striker taking care of business. The City did eventually drag one back through James Kelly, who used his class to put a low ball into the net, before Barnes delivered the killer blow less than a minute later, as the lengthy crowd erupted for the Thunder.
