Rangers ready to unite

Medal honour By Casey Neill “Gee, that’s a surprise” was the reaction from retired commando Captain Donald Bergman to news he’d made this year’s Australia Day Honours List. The Noble Park 88-year-old will receive a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to veterans and their families, and to the wider community - unsurprising to those who know Don and his dedication to volunteer work. “I think it’s just one of the things that people do if they’ve got time and they’ve got the expertise and it helps other people, which is the main thing,” he said. Don was a march marshal at Melbourne’s Anzac Day service for more than 50 years and is a volunteer guide at the Shrine of Remembrance one day a week. “I’ve volunteered to make props for the Berwick Amateur Theatre Society and the Windmill Theatre Society, plus the Cranbourne Secondary College Amateur Theatre Group,” he said. “Also, years ago I designed a training aid for teaching coastal navigation in the army. “All of Australia’s Special Forces use it. “I’m just finishing one off for the Dandenong cadet unit at the moment. “Around the coast of all countries, ships when they’re coming in from the open ocean, they’ve got to know the safe areas that they can sail their ship into. “The lights, the navigation lights are similar to what you do when you’re driving around on a road. You’ve got your traffic lights to guide you. “The navigation aid teaches the principals of this.” The first training aid was in music box form, he explained, and came about when he was asked to take over training during his time with 2 Commando Company and found nothing to assist him. “In the '70s when I did a course on electronics I realised it could be computerised,” he said. This version involves a switch box and maps containing lights that measure metres in size.

He still repairs and makes these units today, with his own time and money. Don joined the Air Training Corps during World War II. “My brother was in the American Merchant Navy in early World War II and my stepfather was serving overseas,” he said. “The war was on and something had to be done.” In 1948 he joined the Citizen’s Military Force (CMF), now known as the Army Reserve and in 1955 transferred to 2 Commando Company. “It gets a bit hazardous sometimes but it was quite good,” he said. “You’re training a lot of people and they turn out to be better citizens for Australia.” In 1969 he volunteered for deployment to Vietnam and spent a short time there as a CMF observer. “I was awarded the Reserve Force Decoration and the Imperial Efficiency Decoration and also I was awarded an Australian Army Training Command Commendation,” he said. “In my civil job I was awarded the Victoria Police Chief Commissioner’s Commendation.” His civil job was in the postmaster general’s department as a senior telecommunications technician and he was the first non-police officer to receive the honour. “When you earn them you can feel quite proud of it, but you don’t worry about it once you get them,” he said. Don and his wife Audrey, 89, have six children - four boys, two girls - and nine grandchildren. Son David followed Don into the armed forces at age 17. “He outranks Don now - he’s a major, Don only got to captain,” Audrey laughed. “He went to Afghanistan twice and Iraq once.” Don added, smiling: “It doesn’t matter what your rank is in the army, you’re always outranked by your wife - and I’m outranked by my son, too.”

Young achievers share honour By Casey Neill Angela Beveridge and Deng Yong Deng are guiding Greater Dandenong youths into a positive future. They were named the joint winners of the Greater Dandenong Young Leader of the Year Award received the honour at the council’s Australia Day Festival in Dandenong Park, on Thursday 26 January. “It means a lot,” Angela said. “You do the work and you don’t really think it has a huge amount of impact on people. “This says that you may have done something that’s made a difference.” The Dandenong North 19-year-old juggles university studies with volunteer work for Kids Hope Australia, World Vision, Red Frogs, Dandenong Church of Christ and the council’s Youth Services team. “My parents, they both work in the healthcare sector so in my family caring for other people has been a really big thing,” she said. “I think that inspired me to get a bit more involved in my community. “I’ve always wanted to work in maybe welfare and I’m studying social work at uni. “I thought it was a good way to learn more about people.” Deng, 25, from Dandenong, aims to provide a positive role model to youths in the South Sudanese community to counteract the incessant negative examples. The pharmacist recently formed Southern Sudanese Australian Youth United. “They need a bit of hope to know they can always try to get somewhere,” he said. “We understand most of them are losing a

Young Leader of the Year joint winners Angela Beveridge and Deng Yong Deng. 164201 Picture: GARY SISSONS sense of belonging.” Deng said many of the “young ones” were born in Australia but their Sudanese-born parents held onto expectations from their homeland. “High-risk kids” were his initial target but he soon realised that tapping into the students that had influence over their peers - positive and negative - would be more effective. “We started running a pilot program,” he said. “Every Friday night they can really engage and we do a lot of mentoring.”

Top citizen says thanks By Casey Neill Yvonne Smith almost turned down the Greater Dandenong Citizen of the Year Award. “I didn’t want to accept it at first,” she said. “I thought ‘I’m a team person, nobody does anything on their own’. “The lady assured me I’d be letting down the people who sponsored me for the award.” She received the honour at the council’s Australia Day Festival in Dandenong Park, on Thursday 26 January. “I feel a bit of a dill, actually,” she said. “All the ladies in my branch, they all do what I do.” Her branch is the Noble Park Country Women’s Association (CWA), where Ms Smith has been a member for 29 years. “It’s my second family really,” she said. “I’ve always been keen on craft. “I always said that when I had a bit of free time I was going to join. “I love it, I just love it.” Ms Smith, 80, has learnt and shared many skills over the years. “We’re very lucky in our branch because there’s some very talented needle women,” she said. “Whatever you want to learn there’s someone there who can show you. “We do so much for the community, it’s a great branch.

The celebration in Dandenong Park on Thursday 26 January also included a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony from Wurundjeri elder Aunty Diane Kerr. “It’s important that we come together and we celebrate,” she said. Festival-goers applauded Australia Day Award recipients for their outstanding contributions to the community. Vajira Ekanayake was in hospital and unable to accept his Community Hall of Fame Award that his daughter Ruwanie said had given him “a bit of light”. “He thinks he was born to help people in the community,” she said. Ruwanie said he’d organised annual medical seminars to encourage people to be proactive about their health, put on Christmas carols for Monash Medical Centre patients and championed the Red Cross. “Because of his longstanding health conditions he’s always found ways to give back within his capability,” she said. Former Dandenong Cricket Club president Ross Hepburn was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame and Big Bash League cricketer Sophie Molineux was named Sports Person of the Year. Volunteer of the Year Celine Tauro has for 13 years donated her time to the Too Low in English program, organised through St Mary’s parish in Dandenong. She was unable to attend the ceremony.

Drama lecturer Jo Raphael invites people of all abilities onto the stage through Fusion Theatre. She established the drama group in 1997 following a request from Springvale’s Alex Litsoudis. It was first known as Dramability but “grew and developed and over a number of years it became incorporated as Fusion Theatre”, which runs from Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre in Dandenong. “What’s beautiful about it is the way that everyone can work together,” Ms Raphael said. “Everyone, regardless of ability, brings something interesting to the table.” Her dedication earned her this year’s Greater Dandenong Leadership Award, which was presented at the council’s Australia Day Festival in Dandenong Park on Thursday 26 January. “I was delighted. It was a great surprise,” she said. Ms Raphael is a Deakin University lecturer and was at the time that Mr Litsoudis first approached her. Fusion Theatre has maintained a close association with the university and received support from City of Greater Dandenong. “I have an interest in drama education and applied theatre,” she said. “I have a background in working with people with disabilities. “We have participants, some who identify as having a disability and others who don’t. “Working in inclusive theatre, you have such diverse actors that you create really surprising and original works of theatre. “It’s a really positive voice for people with disability in the community.” Multicultural Award winner Atiq Abed was overseas so his brother and parents accepted the award on his behalf. His paid employment at AMES is complemented by extensive voluntary work with South East Community Links, a research project for the Burnet Institute that develops cross cultural sport teams and learn-to-drive mentoring.

Art aiming for strength By Casey Neill A Noble Park art program is building passion and resilience in disadvantaged kids. The Future Foundations Art Program in December received $23,000 from the State Government’s $1.6 million Mentoring Grants Program. The art-based mentoring program targets struggling students and last year worked with seven 11-year-olds from Noble Park and Dandenong West primary schools. Creative mentors helped them to realise their creative visions and their work was displayed at Federation Square in November. Noble Park Primary School principal David Rothstadt sits on the board of the registered charity. “The children who are engaged in the program, they’ve built really good social skills and some friendships with children from other

schools as well as their own schools, working in an art environment,” he said. “Students commented that it had taught them persistence. “They develop that resilience, which the kids have actually articulated, that helps them in the other aspects of their lives. “Some of our children who’ve gone through the program ... two of them said it was one of the best things they did at school and would be their fondest memory,” he said. “A couple commented it opened up the arts as a serious vocation.” Mr Rothstadt said one boy who exposed to photography was now in Year 9 now and taking photos for his school magazine. “He’s learnt that skill and that passion through that program,” he said. “It’s had huge impacts for kids on a range of levels.”

He said the children devoted 14 Saturdays in a row to the project from June to October, as did the volunteers who guided them. “Kids have the opportunity to work with people who are professional, semi-professional or study art,” he said. Mr Rothstadt said seven mentors took part last year and Future Foundations was looking for more this time around. He said mentors also learnt a lot from taking part, including teaching skills, and said several were returning for the second and third time. “That tells you how much they get out of it and how much joy they get,” he said. “We’re hoping to grow the program this year. “We’ve had three or four schools involved in past years at Noble Park.” Anyone who is interested in becoming a mentor can contact Mr Rothstadt on 9546 8811 for more information.

Funding for Dandy islands of hope Young Pacific Islanders in Casey and Dandenong will receive a leg up through a new pilot program. The State Government announced $600,000 for the Young Pasifika Program on Friday 20 January. Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott said it was an unfortunate truth that youths in certain communities were at greater risk of dropping out of school or work, engaging in risky behaviour and suffering racism and discrimination. “That’s why it’s so important for us to offer targeted support to ensure every Victorian - regardless of where they come from - gets a fair go,” he said. Experienced youth outreach workers will work directly with the youths and re-connect them to

school, jobs and training. The workers will help to engage young people through existing community networks and relationships such as sport, churches and local government programs. Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos said the program would improve the social, community and economic opportunities for young Pacific Islanders. The program will initially be delivered in Casey and Wyndham, then extended into Dandenong and Brimbank. The program will also fund a project co-ordinator to work closely with local organisations and networks to help improve links between support services and deliver a co-ordinated response.

Apex Street residents are fed up with their Dandenong North home being linked to the car-stealing, home-invading teens striking across Melbourne. “The Apex Gang has never been located in Dandenong,” Greater Dandenong Councillor Roz Blades declared at the Monday 23 January council meeting. “I just think it’s important to say it in the chamber.” That’s not quite correct, according to Victoria Police division three Superintendent Paul Hollowood. “The name did have its origins from one of the residents in Apex Street who was a principal leader of a group of youths who described themselves as Apex,” he said. “Unfortunately, it has developed into a colloquial use.” Supt Hollowood said police preferred to use the term youth networked offender to describe “youths who commit crime in a manner often subscribed to Apex and a range of other individuals and groups”. But this effort to disentangle Apex Street from the web of crimes spanning the state is too little, too late for its residents. Cr Angela Long joined Cr Blades in rising to her feet at the meeting. “I’ve lived at the top end of Apex Street for 45 years,” she said. “We’ve never ever had any trouble in that street.”

The following day, she spoke to the Journal about how Apex Street residents had been inundated with national media crews chasing controversy. Cr Long recalled one TV outlet filming a resident before asking her permission. “I am very disappointed with national media that we always get targeted,” she said. “Any youth crime, they always say it’s the Apex Gang. “We’ve had no trouble here. “We’re sick of being caught up in it. “I think they should really look into where these people are coming from and don’t link them with us at all. “They don’t come from here.” “Greater Dandenong is a great place to live in. “If I thought it was a risk to live here, would I stay? No.” Cr Long welcomed news this month that several convicted Apex members born overseas had been deported. “I think it’s a great idea that if they’re not Australian citizens that they are being deported,” she said. “I think we have to get very hard on these sorts of crimes. “They go into people’s houses, terrorising people for minimal gain. “Especially the elderly, I feel so sorry for the elderly. “This should be a country where you should feel safe all the time.”

Soft opening for inflatable aqua Kids and the young at heart are cooling off in Bangholme’s new aqua playground. The Melbourne Cable Park held a soft opening for the inflatable course on Sunday 8 January and is now running 50-minute sessions every hour from 9am to 5pm every day. Once complete, the Riverend Road water park will also be home to Melbourne’s first full-sized cable water-ski system, a high ropes course and lake space for canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. The Journal revealed plans for the park, adjacent to the National Watersports Centre (NWSC) on Patterson River, in February 2015. The company developing the park, Activ,

leased a grassed area that the State Government declared surplus to its needs. Activ managing director Ian Clark said tracks would tow users around the lakes and over obstacles in the same way a boat would, but solar panels would power the cable systems, which each used as much electricity as two washing machines. Greater Dandenong Council approved the project in August 2015, and endorsed plans for a building permit in May last year. The underlying water table challenged the Melbourne Cable Park’s progress. The park could attract 90,000 people to Bangholme each year, Mr Clark told the Journal, and would average about 250 visitors each day.

In Brief Car stolen at knifepoint Knife-wielding men robbed a man of his wallet and car in Dandenong. The 52-year-old victim parked his green Toyota Corolla in a car park adjacent to the old Dandenong Library on Stuart Street about 10pm on Monday 23 January. He was standing next to his vehicle, waiting for a friend, when three men described as African approached. Two of them produced knives and demanded his keys. Two men of African appearance assaulted and robbed a 20-year-old man near the Springvale railway station. The victim got off a train just after midnight on Thursday 19 January and was walking along Lightwood Road when a blue or silver Toyota Camry approached. The car pulled over, and two men, described as African, exited while another two stayed inside the car. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said the men physically assaulted the victim, demanding his mobile phone and wallet. They held his hands behind his back, pushed to his knees to the ground and took his phone and wallet. He did not sustain any serious injuries. Det Sen Const Lavars appealed for anyone who saw the incident or with any information about the people or vehicle involved to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Councillor Matthew Kirwan told the 23 January Greater Dandenong Council meeting that he’d received these suggestions from residents. Join in with the Australia club As a proud Australian with African heritage, I know all too well the difficulties faced by migrants, especially those of my Sudanese community. It can feel impossible to create an equal sense of belonging and trust within a newly found community. I have seen this recently as part of my work in Melbourne’s south-east with the so-called Apex Gang, which the media suggests is made up of people from African backgrounds. Undeniably there are some youth of Sudanese background committing crimes, as there are of other backgrounds, however the stigma affects the entire community. I dislike seeing reports of some Africans using what has happened in their own country as an excuse to commit crimes. To me that is immoral and inexplicable - I firmly believe they need to contribute to the Australian way of life instead.

Yet I get equally anxious when I see reports of Sudanese people being yelled at in the street, typecast as gang members and stopped by police. Some even change their names on job applications in the battle to overcome discrimination. They deserve better. I just hope Sudanese Australian youth don’t buy into the public narrative about them, dominated as it is by perceptions around crime in general and the Apex Gang in particular. I know that the Sudanese have so much to offer to Australia, we just need to embrace them.

In fact the resilience, persistence, and performance they demonstrate would put many of their Australian peers to shame. Australians are not racist people, it’s a wonderful country with great opportunity. Australians have always given newcomers a fair go providing they show that they appreciate this country, our way of life and add something. African/Sudanese communities in Australia need to look at what the Italians, the Greeks, the many Asian races and the Europeans did. They didn’t think twice about speaking out against their own race if they stepped out of line. We can learn so much from these successful communities. They’ve gone through similar issues but they quickly adapted to the Australian way of living and we need to do the same immediately. I’m passionate about working with new and emerging communities to remove that divide and increase migrants’ sense of belonging, empower-

ing them to make an impact with their individual lives. As part of my role as a role model and motivational speaker to young people in Melbourne, and as a go-to person for the Premier’s office and Victoria Police, I hope to connect with the community to boost local engagement and inclusion via multicultural and diversity programs. Furthermore, as a professional athlete I use the great medium of sport to strengthen communities as a whole. I also share my personal story - as a professional soccer player having to overcome many obstacles and adversity to get to where I am today - in an attempt to motivate and encourage others that success can be achieved if you never give up on your dreams and to always be resilient and remain positive. Many of life’s failures can be attributed to people who did not realise just how close they were to success when they gave up.

OPEN SPACES AND FREEWAY ACCESS A DRAWCARD FOR YOUNG COUPLE Buying an established home was only briefly an option for Kristy Lewis and Jay Stacey. The couple were renting in Chadstone and ready to buy their own house, but it quickly became apparent that building represented better value. “We had a look at established houses but we didn’t want go through an auction, where you don’t know if you’re going to get it, and also you don’t know what you’re getting, so we decided to build, where it’s pretty much a fixed price,” Kirsty said. “It’s just more affordable to build. When you buy established you get something smaller for your money and you have the cost of maintenance.” The pair built a four-bedroom, two-living area home in Berwick Waters, a development by Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia. They were the first family to move into their street two-and-a-half years ago, but are now surrounded by neighbours, parks and wetlands. “There’s lots of space and it’s a lovely neighbourhood because everybody here is like-minded,” Kristy said. “The wetlands were a huge drawcard for us, as well as it being more secluded and private than other estates. Some of the estates we looked at were on a main road.” Since moving into Berwick Waters the couple have had their first child, Jack, who turned one in July. The family are regular visitors to Berwick Waters’ expansive wetlands with its walking paths and bridges, and are particular fans of the area’s playgrounds. “We have a very good park within walking distance with lots of open space,” Kristy said. “There are built-in trampolines for the little

Hands-on Ron our best By Casey Neill It’s hard to find a more humble Dandenong businessman than Ron Anson. The 87-year-old accepted the Greater Dandenong Corporate Citizen of the Year Award at the council’s Australia Day Festival in Dandenong Park on Thursday 26 January. His son Robert announced the news to the family on Boxing Day. “I couldn’t believe it. I’m still finding it difficult to believe,” Ron said. “I don’t know how they’ve done the selection. “We’ve been in Dandenong for just on 60 years and I think it might just be recognition for us being there for so long and doing so much. “Over that length of time, lots of things happen.” The ‘we’ve’ he referred to was transport company Norden Group, which he co-founded in 1959. The company has since trained more than 90 apprentices and supported the Jobs for Dandenong Taskforce. “He’s always maintained that if we don’t train the youth, we don’t have the tradesmen,” daughter Wendy Anson-Moseley said. She’s worked with him for more than 30 years, and Robert now runs Norden after joining Ron there more than 35 years ago. “It became another family - the Norden family,” Wendy said. Ron retired at age 70 but is still a regular at the Bennet Street factory. “He loves to see what they’re building and what they’re doing,” Wendy said. “He greets all the new staff.” Ron said he goes in “because I’ve got a lot of friends there”. Grandsons Aaron and Ryan are also among the employees. “It’s pretty good,” he said. “It makes you think that it will go on forever.”

A presentation about his job at a Dandenong Rotary meeting 30 years ago secured the company’s current main income source. The Dandenong Hospital CEO approached him afterwards and asked him to fit out a disability van. “I didn’t know what he was talking about. I said yes anyway,” he said. He’s been involved with the Rotary Club of

Now I don’t know - nobody wants me to resign. “At 87, going on 88, and I can’t do anything physically there to help raising funds. I don’t want to be just a burden.” Over the years he’s also supported charities and philanthropic causes including Wallara, Yooralla, Hanover and Relay for Life.

Jobs in focus A mayoral taskforce will tackle youth unemployment in Greater Dandenong. At their Monday 23 January meeting, councillors agreed to establish a group to develop an action plan outlining a localised and co-ordinated response to high youth unemployment and disengagement rates in the municipality. The Mayoral Youth Employment Taskforce will include government, service providers, agencies, education, local business and industry and will meet every two months for the next year. Key objectives will include a stocktake of existing services and examples of good outcomes and best practice, identifying gaps, and considering options and initiatives to address barriers. “I think we can all remember our first job,” Cr Sean O’Reilly said. “While in retrospect it may not have been that great a job, it was exciting because we were starting our adult life. “Too many of our youths have not had that experience, to engage in adult life and have a sense of purpose.” The taskforce followed a report into how the council could improve employment for both young people and asylum seekers living in the municipality. At their 12 December council meeting, councillors agreed to meet with the Greater Dandenong Council Asylum Seeker and Refugee Advisory Committee to discuss strategies for improved employment outcomes for asylum seekers. The discussion will include establishing ongoing links between local employers and the not-for-profit organisations providing asylum seekers with employment and training.

Rangers united to take on youth homelessness By Nicholas Creely In Australia, youth homelessness is at an all-time high with a vast population of youth aged between 12 and 25 battling to find a place to sleep. And on 4 February the Dandenong Rangers will look to tackle the issue head-on in a match dedicated to the Unite Project, an organisation committed to getting youth off the streets. The Unite Project, partnered with Nu Pure Beverages, a 100 per cent Australian owned company, provides Australians with spring water sourced from specially selected pristine Australian springs. Currently The Unite Project has 576 stockists Australia wide with more than 280,000 bottles of water sold and $158,000 raised to assist youth. Unite Project ambassador Dandenong Ranger Sara Blicavs said that the epidemic Australia currently faces needs more awareness and that she is

doing all she can to help out. “I came on to the project through my brother (Mark) as it started really through the Geelong Football Club - it’s a branch of Cotton On - and it, basically, is those fluro coloured water bottles that you would see around cafes, and it tackles youth homelessness,” she said. “There are 26,000 young Aussie people between the ages of 12-25 in a homeless shelter or couch surfing and what they do (Unite Project) is they will give to organisations and charities that will help clean up the youth and get them off the street. “I remember last year the Rangers girls did the Big Umbrella, seeing the homeless on Flinders Street, and that was such an amazing experience, and so eye-opening, and I think ever since then this whole project has been perfect for me. “I want to clean up and, especially with a lot of things happening with the homeless now, I really

want to help.” Other high-profile ambassadors include Sara’s brother Mark, an AFL player with Geelong, other Cats players Lincoln McCarthy and Jed Bews, as well as AFL legend Brad Johnson. The match will be played at Dandenong Stadium against the Townsville Fire, with tip-off at 6.30pm, and Blicavs urges Rangers fans to come out and join in the night and the festivities. “It’s all about awareness that night, the whole game is, basically, dedicated to the Unite Project - $3.50 for each ticket entry will go to the Unite Project and you will also be given a bottle of water - it’s about awareness and trying to get cafes or businesses to buy a fridge and store our water,” she said. “I’m looking for a big crowd to come and join and make it a big night so it should be great.” For more information, visit www.theuniteproject.org.

Stunning performance powers Bucks into finals By Nicholas Creely DDCA T20 Semi Final Review Buckley Ridges and Cranbourne have both powered their way to a DDCA Twenty20 final by putting up dominant performances in the semi-finals on 25 January. Down at Park Oval, the Bucks faced off with a star-studded Berwick line-up, electing to bat on one of the smallest grounds in the competition. But what happened next needed to be seen to be believed - Daniel Watson (119 not out) crunched a wonderful century, flaying the Bears bowlers all over the park. The whirlwind knock included a whopping eight maximums and a dozen boundaries, all in the space of just 66 balls, lifting the Bucks to an ominous 7/175. It’s not the first time Watson has stolen the show in this tournament with the blade either - in the 2008/09 final against Springvale South he made a record 193 not out, a knock which included 14 sixes. Star Bears captain Jarrod Goodes (4/36) could hold his head high once again while James Wilcock (2/27) performed well. In reply, the Bears were in serious strife early,

losing Nathan Pilon and marquee Michael Wallace early before Jarrod Armitage (35) and Ryan Crawford (47) battled it out to finish all-out on 147. Hussain Ali was extraordinary with the ball in the middle-period of the run-chase, taking 5/16 off his four overs, including the key scalps of Wallace, Josh Holden and Goodes. Lukas Hoogenboom (3/30) was also pivotal but went at over 10 an over. Meanwhile at Casey Fields, The Eagles destroyed Parkfield in a completely one-sided affair. It seemed like the Eagles were hell-bent on revenge after the Parkers upset them just a week prior in Turf 1 and were at their dominant best right from the outset. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Parkers were bundled out for just 72 off 18.5 overs with the Eagles taking advantage throughout the middle-stages of the innings. Jakeb McVicar (3/10) and Cameron Dinger (3/10) worked in tandem excellently while Matt Chasemore (2/29), Cameron Kelly (1/13) and Steven Spoljaric (1/7) were all on song with their seam bowling. An injury-depleted Melbourne Boomers have fallen, but not without a fight, as the Dandenong Rangers continued their dominant season over their cross-town rivals on Wednesday 25 January at the State Basketball Centre. After coming out on top on the previous three occasions against the Boomers, the Rangers completed a clean-sweep and further enhanced their chances of finishing in the top-two at the end of the home-andaway season. In fact, the Rangers are almost a certainty to play finals now. The finishing score-line 78-66 was a true indicator of the Rangers dominance and after a slow-going start to the 2017 year have found their niche once again, punishing the Boomers for multiple errors around the court. In recent weeks coach Larissa Anderson has spoken about the need to cut out the silly errors and the Rangers showed the way against their opposition. In one of the best individual games of the season, Sara Blicavs (25 points) was spectacular and combined with Steph Cumming (16) to dominate all-corners. Blicavs, who has been named in the WNBL Team of the Week twice already, looks certain for another reward this week as she continues to build on her already impressive career. But the star was just happy to get away with the win against their biggest rivals and said the team is looking to build upon its strong from leading into the finals. “I’m just so happy that we have played Melbourne four times and played well and we now can move on to play other teams,” she chuckled. “We’re just aiming on getting into finals and trying to hold on to top-spot now - we can then build on our game and work on things right in time for finals.” Other Rangers to play impressive games were the consistent Aimie Clydesdale, star import Ally Mallott and the stable veteran Jacinta Kennedy. It was a game riddled with errors, mostly by the Boomers, as the Rangers led virtually from the outset despite a plucky start from the Boomers, and continued on their dominance as the opposition began to get sloppy. In a great sign for the WNBL in what was the Australia Day Eve game, a healthy crowd of 2638 supporters attended, a record for the State Basketball Centre.

Janaka Liyanabadalge (1/57 off 27 overs) was a constant force, and continues his stellar season. North Dandenong v Dingley Dingley’s charge towards a shock finals appearance remains alive for yet another week after knocking off a plucky Maroons outfit. Already well ahead in the game in the pursuit of 161, the Dingoes quickly knocked off the runs in no time, and declared on 6/163. Jurgen Andersen (4/59) continues to be a beacon for the Maroons, bowling virtually all of the first session. The Maroons then batted out the entire day, finishing on 6/107, and virtually closing the curtain on playing finals this season.

By Nicholas Creely Vic Premier Review - Round 15 (Day 1) Throughout the soul-searching and testing times in James Pattinson’s career, it seems that the prodigious talent has gone away and added another string to his bow. It’s been a long time coming for one of the quickest bowlers in the country, if not the planet, but throughout a gruelling two years, he has come back a better rounded and more impactful cricketer. Although Patto has always handled the blade with confidence, as the public has seen throughout his test appearances with Australia, this season the Aussie quick is becoming a bona-fide all-rounder. And at Shepley Oval on Saturday, against a strong Melbourne bowling outfit, Pattinson played one of the knocks of the season, scoring his second century of the year, this time making 131 off 200 balls. His 137 in the Twenty20 against Ringwood was something extraordinary, but this innings was different in so many ways. It wasn’t just the manner in which he seamlessly caressed the ball to all parts, but it was his ability to steady the ship and weather the storm. He came in at 3/41, with stars Brett Forsyth (16) and skipper Tom Donnell (0) back in the sheds, and set about resurrecting the innings. Teaming up with the consistent Lincoln Edwards (78), the pair showed why the Panthers are truly the team to beat, notching up a 144-run partnership, and the home side never looked back, racking up 8/361 by stumps. Other strong contributors were Cameron Forsyth (70), who continued his impressive form, and Jacques Augustin (20), who chimed in late with some nice stroke-play. But the real story of the day was Pattinson, who has now made 502 runs at 62.8 this season, with two centuries and two fifties to his name. Look out Melbourne, because he is still yet to bowl in this match! Meanwhile, Casey-South Melbourne have pulled a rabbit out of the bag, claiming first-innings points in another stunning result against Greenvale. With the home side electing to send the Swans in, wickets fell swiftly, with the Swans falling all the way to 8/81. But Leigh Diston (28) wagged late in the innings, sending the Swans up to a competitive but under-par 121. And despite a stunning start to the second-innings, in which the Kangaroos fell to 6/49, a plucky partnership from Nathan Massey (44) and Kyle Adams (31) got them to 7/112. But Brendan Rose (5/40), the hero last week, stood up again, storming through the tail, bowling out the Roos for 120.

DDCA TURF 1 Review - Round 8 (Day 2) Mordialloc v Berwick The Bears remain well and truly in the race for the Turf 1 flag, knocking off Mordialloc at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. Chasing 102 from last week, the Bears were in trouble with four early wickets, before Jarrod Armitage (43) and Adam Watson (40) steered the ship and managed to help them pass the total. The Bears were eventually bowled out for 181, with Stuart Squires (4/40) toiling hard as he always does. With the prospect of outright highly unlikely, but not impossible, the Bloodhounds went in to face the music once again for 30 overs. And the mindset of the batsman was clear from the outset, with the Bloodhounds opting to stone-wall the innings and prevent any further damage. Eventually the game ended with the Bloodhounds on 1/38 off 30.1 overs, with some extraordinary figures seen. None more than Bloodhounds opener Tim Richardson, who made 11 not out off a whopping 112 balls. Springvale South v Buckley Ridges This one could really hurt the Bloods. With the top-four race so tight, any wins or losses can be disastrous, and despite it being just a blip on the radar, Springvale South would be disappointed to have not chased down a manageable total against the Bucks. After the Bucks gave the Bloods 192 for victory, it seemed the home side would have no trouble reaching the total with plenty of overs to spare, reaching 3/115 at one point. But a stunning middle-order collapse, mostly at the hands of Luke Fletcher (4/28), who was the star throughout, saw the Bloods all-out for 176. Omar Baker top-scored for the Bloods with a well-made 52. Dandenong West v Parkfield Two of the bottom-three sides desperate for a win and bragging rights - that’s what cricket is about. And the clash between the Bulls and Parkers was a fantastic contest, with the men from the West claiming the chocolates. Chasing 124, the Westers pushed it until the very end, despite a stellar spell from Matthew Aslett (5/35), and eventually got there before being bowled out for 126. Exciting youngster Ethan French (27) topscored in the thriller. Cranbourne v Heinz-Southern Districts Apart from the first thirty-minutes of day-one, Cranbourne was completely dominant, outplaying the Cobras in a critical top-four clash at Casey Fields. The Williams sisters may have stolen the spotlight at the Australian Open but it’s a husband and wife team from Dandenong that are the family to focus on in the world of lawn bowls. When Prem and Seetha Hettiarachchi moved to Australia 20 years ago they had never seen a lawn bowls green -but have taken to the sport with gusto. Their love for bowls reached a grand crescendo late last year when both were crowned singles champions of the Dandenong RSL Rec Bowls Club. They have both won championships before -Seetha was the back-to-back champion at Burden Park before the Hettiarachchi’s made the move to Dandenong - but never before have they held singles championships at the same time. Until now, with Prem scoring a 25-17 win in the men’s final and Seetha winning a 25-23 thriller in the women’s. “I’m very happy, it’s out first time together and to be singles champions at the same time is a very special feeling, it’s like a dream come true,” Prem told the Journal. Prem and Seetha wasted no time in getting involved in the Australian way of life when they made the move from Sri Lanka in the 90s. “When we came to Australia we fell in love with the people and thought we need to do something sporty to join in the culture,” Prem said. “A friend took me to the rink and laid down a mat, he asked me to bowl and was impressed so I became a member and Seetha followed. We’ve loved every minute of bowls and the people involved ever since.” Prem, who has played plenty of snooker and cricket in his life, said the challenge of lawn bowls was never ending. “It’s a tough game and there is a lot of practice that goes into getting your bowl close to the kitty,“ he said. “It’s a lot of practice, but you can’t buy for a
