A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were aware of reports of hoon activity in the Noble Park area.

“Police have a zero tolerance in regard to intentional high-risk driving behaviour,” she said.

“Police are working with local government, VicRoads and local businesses to assist in reducing this type of driving behaviour.”

Police and the council urged anyone with information about the behaviour to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Drag racing has driven a 50-year Noble Park resident out of town.

Steven Piper is moving to Ararat for peace and quiet after battling with Friday night hoons for 15 years.

He said the noise from their post-midnight antics on Princes Highway between Dunblane and Corrigan roads was “horrific, absolutely horrific”.

“Last year we had up to 100 cars coming in groups,” he said.

“They do a U-turn at Dunblane Road and they go sideways.

“We’ve had a couple hit the gutter.

“They’re doing burnouts. This will go on until 4am.

“It’s absolutely deafening. You can’t sleep.

“I’ve called police so many times and they just don’t come out.

“They haven’t got the resources.”

Mr Piper said it appeared those involved had scanners in their vehicles because they left before police arrived and returned shortly after they had left.

“Because of this situation I’m going to sell up and take off,” he said.

“I love this town, but they take it over on Friday nights.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of residents around here.

We’re just dumbfounded, we don’t know what to do.

“It’s a problem that nobody can fix.”

Mr Piper suggested that VicRoads install road safety cameras to catch speeding drivers.

“They’re going to make revenue out of it,” he said.

“They need a deterrent.”

He said that aside from the noise, “the bastards throw rubbish out their windows” and placed other motorists in danger.

Greater Dandenong Council’s acting city planning, design and amenity director Peter Shelton said the council wasn’t directly responsible for addressing hoon behaviour but worked closely with police and VicRoads on the issue.

“We are currently investigating options for a mobile CCTV solution that could be installed at hotspots like this to support police actions in addressing hoon behaviour,” he said.

Armed men tried to rob an off-duty police officer at a Dandenong car wash.

One man approached about 10.05pm on Wednesday 11 January and asked for change for a $5 note.

A second man, who appeared to be carrying a firearm, then allegedly demanded cash.

Police arrested the men on Cheltenham Road, Dandenong, about 5.30pm on Thursday 12 January. They charged the 23-year-old and 26-year-old, both from Noble Park, with attempted robbery, possessing a firearm, thefts and false imprisonment.

Machete-wielding would-be thieves terrorised a cleaner at Springvale McDonald’s, but left empty-handed.

The armed bandits entered the store at Osborne and Westall avenues about 2.30am on Monday 16 January and approached a cleaner and demanded cash from the till, which he was unable to get.

One was described as Caucasian and the other was possibly African or Islander in appearance.

Two women armed with a screwdriver robbed a Dandenong ATM user.

The victim parked his Mazda 3 sedan in front of the Lonsdale Street Westpac bank branch about 1.50am on Thursday 29 December.

A woman then reached in through his open window and when she failed to grab his keys she produced a screwdriver and struck him in the chest.

Another woman opened the passenger door and stole the victim’s iPhone 6.

The women were driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser with two different coloured doors on the driver’s side.

One woman was described as Caucasian and 167 centimetres tall with a solid build and a large tattoo over her left shoulder to her bicep.

The second woman was African in appearance and about 167 cm tall.

A Dandenong based not-for-profit is taking care of the homeless and the environment with an initiative that provides sleeping mats made from recycled plastic bags.

Carers of Africa (COA) provide counselling and support for people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and African heritage in Dandenong.

The organisation’s ‘Sleep Well Project’ has work for the dole volunteers looming recycled plastic bags into sleep mats for homeless people in the region.

Carers of Africa collect the donated plastic bags, sort them into those that can be used and volunteers carefully fold and cut the bags into strips called plarn (for plastic yarn).

The plarn is then made into a ball which in turn is used to crochet a sleeping mat.

The mats will be included as part of a package given to homeless people that includes other donated good such as a crocheted pillow, a pillow case, a pair of socks, toothbrush and toothpaste.

Manager at COA Diane Carrick said the organisation decided to pursue the idea after one of their clients brought it to her attention.

“We had a lady come in who had seen the work Carers of Africa did and her daughter had the idea (to make the mats),” she said.

“They had been doing it from their home and we have all seen homeless in the city and this has been going for years so we thought it’s a great idea.”

COA expects to make at least 20 mats and care packages that will be presented to homeless outreach centres this week.

Ms Carrick said the program would continue beyond the presentation though, as she had managed to secure a plastic bag source.

“This will be an ongoing project as I managed to source the national stock of Masters shopping bags,” she said.

“I have 3.6 million bags valued at over $100,000 in storage and each mat takes between 500 and 700 bags to complete.”

Ms Carrick said people could donate their plastic bags to the COA office in Dandenong.

Bangholme’s Chinese theme park ride has come to an end and what’s now happening with the 43-hectare site is up in the air.

The Journal has tried unsuccessfully to contact C M Innovation and Randc Developments, which bought the paddock at 616 Frankston-Dandenong Road from Chinese theme park company Meixin Australia in August last year for $9.9 million.

Greater Dandenong Council’s city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman confirmed that a planning application had been submitted seeking “to undertake bulk earthworks throughout the site, which will include some topsoil stockpiling”.

“It is also proposed to alter the access from Frankston-Dandenong Road,” he said.

“Council is aware that works may have commenced.

“Council officers have subsequently directed that all earthworks cease until a decision is made

any details of what the new planning application involved.

“We hope it is for something that is appropriate for the green wedge but if it will result in damage to the rural landscape or openness of the area then we will be lodging a strong objection,” he said.

In October 2014 the Journal reported that Meixin Australia bought the site for $5.335 million and intended to build a theme park.

The idea drew excited praise from councillor and now-Mayor Jim Memeti who said it would be a drawcard for the area.

But the green wedge site was in the floodprone Carrum Swamp and within an exclusionary buffer zone from Melbourne Water’s Eastern Treatment Plant which is designed to ward off crowds of people due to the offensive odours wafting from the sewerage plant.

The Journal has been unable to contact Meixin to find out why it sold the site.

The roads to power and privilege

By Casey Neill What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names. This week the Journal is mixing things up by taking a look at three themed clusters, in Springvale and Dandenong North.

NAME

Pockets of Greater Dandenong have taken inspiration for their street names from royals, prime ministers and even a horse racing crew.

In Springvale there’s Albert, Balmoral, Regent, Buckingham, Victoria, Royal, Princess, St James, St Johns, Thames, Windsor, Queens and Osborne avenues.

The names refer to Queen Victoria and her husband, the Prince Regent Albert, and the Royal residences in England and Scotland.

The original subdivision on land owned by speculator and surgeon George Le Fuere was sold in 1886 as New Springvale by a company called The People’s Home Syndicate.

Queen Victoria was about to celebrate her ju-

bilee in 1887, having come to the throne in 1837.

Also in Springvale is an area known as the Melbourne Racing Club sub-division.

Gove Street was named after former chairman Robert Gove.

Committeemen Stan Garnsworthy, Alfred Watkins, David Fairbairn, Harvey Picken, Pultney Mein, JH Davey and John C Reilly gave their surnames to courts and streets.

Carlyon Court was named for committee man and later chairman Tom Carlyon and Hodgkinson Court recognised treasurer Ern Hodgkinson.

Curtin Crescent is named after World War II prime minister John Curtin, Chifley Crescent is named after 16th PM Ben Chifley, Menzies Avenue recognises Australia’s longest serving PM Robert Menzies, and Fraser Street pays tribute to the late Malcolm Fraser.

100 years ago 25 January 1917 The returned soldier The State War Council is vigorously prosecuting its campaign in the interests of the returned soldier.

Daily its offices are filled by men who have returned from the front and who are anxious now they have discarded the khaki and returned to civilian life, to once more become producing units for themselves and for the community.

It is not temporary relief these men require, although this must be given to a large number owing to the want of support accorded by many employers in the matter of supplying them with work of a nature they are fitted to carry out.

The question is, are these men, who

have come back to us broken in health and reduced in physical capacity, to be allowed to walk the streets of Melbourne unemployed?

There must be numbers of openings in the country towns which can be offered them.

There are dozens of them who have had experience as salesman and clerical men, who owing to their disabilities are forced to take employment which will bring them more in the open air.

The main point at issue is that the retuned soldier is here now and men are returning every few days.

50 years ago 19 January 1967 Cooking comments led to gaol An objection he raised to steak onions and

potatoes prepared by his mother for his evening meal led to a Dandenong youth being sent to gaol for seven days on a charge of having hit his mother.

He is John Raymond Clarke, abattoirs employee of Railway Parade, Dandenong, who said: “I was drunk, and it was stupid of me.”

Mrs Mary Clarke told the court at 8pm on January 12 her son John came home.

He was very drunk and in a bad mood.

“He came in demanding his meal,” Mrs Clarke said, “then he said it was pig’s food.

“He threatened myself and my husband.

John lost control of his temper. I heard a bump.

“He banged a bottle of beer on the kitchen table and the bottle broke. I went into the kitchen.

“He had my husband against the wall and

had him by the throat. I tried to pull him away.

“I received cuts on the hand from a broken bottle and I received punches from son on the arms.”

5 years ago 23 January 2012 Maca’s and the no-stop zone Controversy surrounds a new McDonald’s restaurant planned for Frankston-Dandenong Road in Dandenong South.

Last week, the Weekly reported that Greater Dandenong Council had intended installing ‘No stopping at all times’ signs between 119 Greens Road and Frankston-Dandenong Road intersection.

But it was forced to back down after outraged business owners said the lack of trucks stopping would destroy their businesses.

Sights are set for USA

By Cam Lucadou-Wells With a swag of national titles, Red Roo Sport’s irrepressible basketballers are working hard to be considered for athletic scholarships in the United States.

The Dandenong-based club has an under 18s and under 20s team, both brimming with skilful players knuckling down to academically qualify and prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in May. Red Roo Sports director James Kerr, who mentors these young men, believes if they were based in the US, the majority of players would stand a very good chance of playing at a collegiate level.

“They’re amazing athletes and great young men who understand how to win and the discipline that it takes.

“We would love for each player to have the opportunity to advance in life through sports.”

Mr Kerr said the barrier was higher for college recruits from Australia because of the cost to bring them over to the US. But the prize is bright with NBA players at the upper echelons of Australian sports stars’ earnings.

Red Roo advises its players that success is a function of extreme hard work, dedication and discipline.

In December, both teams, with spectacular, high-tempo play, took out the national 2016 South Sudanese Australian Summer Slam championships to add to several titles over the past two years.

“I’d say (the Summer Slam) could be one of the best tournaments in the country. It’s amazing to watch,” Mr Kerr said.

Red Roo players, like Jo Jo Deng, Kueth Jock, Buom Kuoth Gatluak, Oyiti Amum, Michael Jok and Golong Golong, catch trains and buses from across Melbourne’s south-east - as far away as Traralgon and Pakenham - to be in the program.

They share a clear-eyed, gritty determination to make the college grade.

Jo Jo speaks of the importance of not just a sporting career but furthering his education.

“It’s like a family here,” Jo Jo said.

In Brief Wastewater fine A Springvale business has been fined $7500 for illegally dumping industrial waste into stormwater.

The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) fined Universal Marble after tracing white sediment-laden wastewater from the Booloora Road stormwater system back to the premises.

EPA acting southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said the investigation followed a complaint from a member of the community and that the waste came from stonecutting works.

“The company said the discharge occurred due to a hole in a wastewater tank that resulted in the waste flowing down the stormwater drain,” she said.

“Anyone who allows wastewater to leave their premises can face a fine of over $7500 or up to $758,350 if prosecuted before the courts,” she said.

Ms Mathias said the EPA also issued Universal Marble with a notice requiring controls to prevent further industrial waste discharging into the stormwater system.

Red Roo aspires to expand to an under 16s boys’, open men’s and a women’s team for an increasing list of eager would-be players.

“We are trying to provide the correct pathway in what is considered a maze of difficult life decision making choices,” Mr Kerr said.

“We’ve given them a little bit of hope.”

Man faces SA crash charges

A Dandenong man charged over a girl’s death in South Australia will learn in March whether he will stand trial.

Shujaat Bahrami, 40, received the news at a hearing in Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 17 January.

The matter was adjourned to Tuesday 21 March at Adelaide Magistrates’ Court for committal hearing.

South Australian police charged Mr Bahrami with one count of causing death by dangerous driving, three counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving and one count of aggravated due care over an eight-year-old Kilburn girl’s death in a Barossa Valley car crash.

He was behind the wheel of a Hyundai SUV that collided head-on with a Mitsubishi Pajero fourwheel drive on Duck Pond Road, Stockwell, just before 4pm on Sunday 2 October.

The girl was in the Hyundai’s back seat and died at the scene.

Susan Collier has notched up another Rotary milestone.

The Rotary Club of Dandenong President was named a Paul Harris Fellow at the group’s Christmas dinner.

The honour recognises Rotary’s founder and is available for a $1000 donation to The Rotary Foundation.

In 2015 Ms Collier, 32, became the youngest person to lead the Dandenong club in its 80-year history and is now in her second successive term as president - a first for the club.

She attended Lyndale Primary School and Dandenong High School and is now a special needs teacher at Eastern Ranges Special Development School in Ferntree Gully.

Her connection with Rotary started with stage managing the 2009 district conference.

She was invited to join the club the following year.

Ms Collier told the Journal in 2015 that she

met some resistance when she first joined the ageing club.

“Now I feel like one of the fellas,” she said.

The Dandenong North resident grew up around her dad Alan’s Rotary involvement.

“The key is for me to be out doing things,” she said.

“Younger people are not going to come to a meeting once a week and have dinner and go home.

“You have those social outlets already.

“It’s got to be hands-on, meaningful work in the community.

“It used to be that you had to come every week.

Now it’s more what you put in.

“If you’re not able to come to any meetings but you’re able to help out every second weekend if we’ve got something on, that’s what you do.

“Rotary is what you make it.”

A Dandenong South manufacturer received praise from Bill Shorten during the Federal Opposition Leader’s first public appearance for the year.

He joined Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus at AW Bell on Monday 16 January to speak about the ALP’s commitment to jobs.

“AW Bell is a terrific business that has transformed itself over the past 15 or 20 years from a 100 per cent automotive business to being a firm that is making parts, high-end metal castings for the defence, aerospace and biomedical industries,” Mr Shorten said.

The Journal reported last October that AW Bell was helping to build one of the world’s most advanced fighter jets.

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter project and other international achievements earned the family business the Manufacturing Award at the 37th Governor of Victoria Export Awards.

CEO Sam Bell’s grandfather Alan William Bell, a pattern-maker, started the business in Oakleigh in 1952.

“My father (Geoff) took over in 1983,” Sam said. He followed suit in 2014.

And AW Bell moved to Dandenong South in 1997 and Geoff saw the writing on the wall for the auto industry in about 2006.

“We started actively chasing more work in the defence industry,” Sam said.

The company has two main business streams.

“One is producing investment and sand castings that we machine in-house,” he said.

“That’s probably about 80 per cent of our revenue.”

The other is AW Bell machinery, which is entirely export-based.

“We design and supply equipment to the investment casting and sandcasting industries worldwide,” Sam said.

Ghost story breaks out

By Casey Neill Grab a torch, keep an eye out for clues and make a great escape in Dandenong.

Jayson Lowe, 22, was in the shower when he came up with the Bradshaw family tale that guides the Time is Key escape room challenge.

With help from wife Leesa, 21, he brought the ghost story to life in an Alexander Avenue warehouse. Two to six ‘paranormal investigators’ have 90 minutes to find their way into the locked Bradshaw Manor and work their way through a series of puzzles to solve a supernatural mystery.

“Jayson went to an escape room for his bucks night in April,” Leesa said.

“For my birthday in July, he took me to one for a surprise in Oakleigh.”

They returned the following day to complete a second room and loved it so much they decided to create their own.

“It just happened really fast from there,” she said.

“Four months after that we were open.”

That was at the end of October.

“People have been booking in advance. Every Saturday from here to March is booked,” Leesa said.

“I think the greatest thing about all this is we weren’t expecting it.

“We’re really enjoying it.”

Dandenong was close to home and “we also wanted to have one that was closer to everyone in Gippsland and the south-eastern suburbs”.

“The closest one to us is Oakleigh and all the others are in Melbourne,” she said.

Jayson and his grandfather built the room and a pulley system designed to spook.

“Jayson’s already finished the planning on our second room,” Leesa said.

“It’s going to be a creepy circus theme.

“I am planning a kid’s room.

“We haven’t really heard anything about a kid escape room before.

“They’ll more be searching for things than figuring out problems.”

Also in the pipeline is Bradshaw Manor 2, continuing the original story.

“Jayson was working at a bank as a first stage collections officer,” Leesa said.

“He just sat at a desk with a computer and he was so bored by it.

“He’d always wanted to run his own business and be his own boss.

“He loves creating things, so this was perfect for him.”

New options for retirement Australia’s has 3.4 million residents aged over 65 and many will consider their living options this year according to Lendlease Retirement Living business Victorian Regional manager Marcelle Wilson.

Ms Wilson said the new year was a common time for people to evaluate their circumstances and plan for a change.

In fact, Ms Wilson notes that one of the most common things residents tell her is they wished they’d made the move sooner.

“All our villages provide residents with the flexibility to stay socially and physically active, while remaining connected to their local community,” she said.

“However it’s the unique atmosphere at each village that many residents consider when making their choice.

“The best way to make an informed decision about retirement living is to experience the village first-hand.”

Brendan Nicholl has been painting Springvale street scenes for the past six months as the first Springvale Uniting Church artist in residence.

His efforts to capture the town’s beauty and uniqueness will be on display as Springvale in Transition from 11am to 1pm on Sunday 12 February at the church, at Balmoral and Albert streets.

Doveton’s Terry Power wants dog owners to hug their pooches during January to honour his late pal Tuppence.

The 12-year-old Jack Russell died on Monday 9 January and he thought that ‘hug your dog month’ would be a fitting tribute.

“People could go home, hug their dogs and say I love you,” Terry said.

A manufacturing showcase will return to Dandenong this year following the success of the inaugural Dandenong on Wheels and last year’s Smart Manufacturing ’16.

Committee for Dandenong, City of Greater Dandenong and South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) will run SM17 on 12 and 13 September.

SPORT Neck and neck towards the end

By Nicholas Creely DDCA T20 Semi-Final Preview There are just four teams left in the running for the prestigious DDCA Twenty20 competition with Cranbourne, Buckley Ridges, Parkfield and Berwick set to battle it out in the semi-finals on Wednesday 25 January.

In what is set to be a thrilling prelude to the Australia Day celebrations, all teams will be desperate to fire, because, well, the loser is out.

The competition to date has been even, with no team really holding an advantage over the other.

But in the format of Twenty20 cricket, anything can happen, and when it looks like the game is set to be won, a piece of magic can change a result.

Here is a preview of what to expect in this week’s epic encounters.

Cranbourne v Parkfield, 5.15pm Casey Fields On paper it looks like the Eagles should win, but just last week in Turf 1 action, Parkfield stunned the reigning champs in a final ball thriller.

Whether it has any effect on the result is unknown, but it must be at the back of the Eagles’ mind.

It has been a strong campaign for the Eagles, with stars Matthew Chasemore and Steven Spoljaric both having brilliant tournaments.

But do they have the depth in their disposal if either of them fall early or fail to capture vital breakthroughs with the ball?

The answer is probably not, but it does have the talent.

Lucas Ligt is one to watch and has played some terrific innings, while Cam Dinger, who now

By Nicholas Creely Mohi Kahui represents part of an exciting band of Australian baseballers and when the youngster from Noble Park jetted off to Blacktown, NSW, to begin his journey with the U16 Victorian side, the 16-year-old claimed a memorable gold in a tournament full of surprises and extreme heat.

The tournament ran from 6 January to 15 January, where the Victorian Blue side came from third to defeat Western Australia in a hard fought 5-1 victory.

In fact, it was the second gold that the Vic Blue team have won in three years.

But the camaraderie and chance to play against the best under-agers in the country were part of an experience Kahui said he will never forget.

“The experience was really good, I liked it just hanging around with the boys and playing some good baseball and playing other states was really good,” he said.

“The team went really well, obviously, and we all played our part - we played as a team which is great - we played in like 44-degree heat and we had to just keep hustling.

“I went well and I played my best and did what I had to do for the team.

Kahui plays his summer season with Waverley, plying his trade and advancing up the rankings at a club which is well renowned for producing stars while in the winter he heads off to North Balwyn, another popular club with great youth development.

But for the future, Kahui is looking forward to getting back to his club but remains goal-driven and ready to take the next step in his career.

“I’ll keep playing club baseball and keep striving forward and keep trying to get into the older teams - that’s what I’m aiming to do now.”

And amid the excitement of winning gold and making life-long friends, Kahui wanted to thank the people in his life that have got him to this point.

“I’d like to thank my parents for what they do for me and also my coaches, who always help me.”
