Casey based anti-racism group Casey Against Racism has rallied almost 3000 supporters in an online petition to have an Australia Day billboard featuring Muslim girls reinstated.

The group started the petition on change.org about 6pm on Tuesday 17 January and by 10.30am on Wednesday the petition had attracted 2772 signatories.

The electronic billboard at the junction of EastLink and Peninsula Link at Carrum Downs advertised Victorian Government Australia Day celebrations.

A picture of the billboard was shared on the Facebook page of far right-wing political group United Patriots Front on 13 January and attracted almost 1000 shares and more than 600 comments.

It was claimed in the media that QMS Media, the advertising company that ran the ad pro bono, removed the billboard after it was threatened.

QMS Media Chief Operating Officer Malcolm Pearce confirmed the company removed the billboard over the weekend of 14-15 January but declined to comment on alleged threats.

The billboard was widely and incorrectly reported as being located in Cranbourne and caught the attention of Casey Against Racism which decided to start a petition to have the billboard put back up.

Casey Against Racism spokesperson Lorraine Pratley said that the ethos of Australia Day should not be determined by threats against a specific group of people.

“We will not allow right wing extremists to set the tone and define what is and isn’t Australian,” she said.

“People who are afraid of smiling little girls need to take a serious look at themselves.

“Cranbourne is a very diverse suburb in a multi-cultural country.”

Ms Pratley said the actions of those that had the billboard removed had been counter-productive.

“Our petition quickly reached 2000 signatures and is still climbing,” she said.

“The racists have achieved the opposite of what they intended by bringing locals and supporters together to stand up to racism.”

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott said the backlash against the advertisement was a disappointing reflection of the community.

“This digital advertising campaign uses a number of images of Victorians from various cultural backgrounds - all of whom are proud Australians,” he said.

“While the ads have since been removed, anyone who considers this a victory needs a refresher on the true meaning of Australia Day.” Mr Scott said the advertisements were intended to highlight the cohesive nature of modern multicultural Australia.

“It is about bringing people together and celebrating the diversity which makes this state and this country great,” he said.

“It’s very disappointing to see a small minority attacking proud Australians for their love of their country.”

Residents owe $137m in fines

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey residents owe more than $137 million in fines.

The City of Casey has topped the list of areas with most outstanding warrants for the second year in a row, according to the Victorian Sheriff’s Office.

For the financial year ending 30 June 2016, residents across Casey amassed a whopping $137,127,232 worth of unpaid fines and outstanding warrants.

With 370,773 warrants issued to 31,217 offenders, the Casey council area also took out the top spot for the

value of warrant per person with each one owning an average of $4393.

Neighbouring municipality of Greater Dandenong made the top 10 list with $77,165,301 owing from 25,304 people.

The figures realised by the Sheriff’s Office take into account all outstanding warrants including civil, criminal and corporate.

The data relates to infringements managed by the Department of Justice and Regulation and includes infringements issued by Victoria Police, other Government agencies, including VicRoads, and the Taxi Services Commission.

It does not include infringements managed by other enforcement agencies, such as local councils and Public Transport Victoria.

While overall numbers of warrants issued are down across the state by 4.6 per cent, long-term unpaid fines saw a 7 per cent increase in the number of warrants issued to recover outstanding debts.

Sheriff of Victoria Brendan Facey said despite the best efforts of police and sheriffs, some people still need to be chased down to repay missing money.

“Unfortunately, some people are

still not getting the message that you cannot ignore your unpaid fines,” he said.

“We don’t want to see people’s matters escalating through the system, we want people to speak to us about their options before they are caught by sheriff’s officers.”

Mr Facey said ignoring unpaid fines can lead to much more trouble down the track than organising a way to deal with the debt before they increase.

“Fines can quickly escalate after infringements are issued,” he said.

“For example, you may be issued with a red-light infringement in Janu-

ary with a penalty of $389. By June, if you ignored your fine, the total penalty could be $576.60,” he said.

July last year saw the introduction of a new the Department of Justice and Regulation call centre that contacts people and helps them to get on top of their fines early.

Since its inception, the call centre has contacted more than 31,500 people and recovered $16.2 million in unpaid fines.

It has also helped to arrange payment plans for almost 18,571 matters valued at more than $3.6 million.

By Casey Neill Westfield Fountain Gate shoppers and movie-goers should keep an eye out for measles symptoms, following two cases detected in Rowville.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Professor Charles Guest, said the teenage siblings visited the Narre Warren shopping centre on Sunday 8 January after arriving home from Malaysia on Thursday 5 January.

“One of the children was hospitalised for a short period of time at the Angliss Hospital before being diagnosed and then isolated,” he said.

“Both are now recovering at home.

“We are concerned that more people may have been infected from coming into contact with these children in the community.

“Measles has an incubation period of up to 18 days so illness acquired from contact could still be coming through, and cases could still remain infectious for many days.”

Prof Guest said measles usually started with common cold symp-

toms such as fever, sore throat, red eyes and a cough.

The characteristic measles rash usually appears three to seven days after the first symptoms, generally starting on the face and then spreading to the rest of the body.

“Anyone developing these symptoms is advised to ring ahead to their doctor or hospital and alert them that they have fever and a rash,” he said.

“If you know you have been in contact with a measles case, please alert your GP or hospital emergency department.

“The doctor or hospital will then be able to provide treatment in a way that minimises transmission.”

People can develop pneumonia and other serious complications from the disease.

Prof Guest said most cases of measles in Victoria were linked to international travel.

He said measles was now uncommon in Australia because of the widespread use of a vaccine, but it was important to continue immunising children because overseas travellers could bring in the disease.

A Berwick man has said he is shocked and angry after thieves stole his wife’s wedding and engagement ring and his deceased mother’s jewellery from his home.

“I never thought that I would have a break in,” said the man who wished to remain anonymous.

The front door of the couple’s Strathaven Drive home was forced open between 8am and 4pm on Thursday 12 January.

It wasn’t until the man and his wife had been home from work for almost two hours when he received a call from his bank asking about transactions on his credit cards.

“My wife and I had left for work on Thursday morning and when we got home on Thursday evening, we didn’t realise anything had happened until I got a call from my bank asking me if I had made purchases,” he said.

“I said no, those cards are in my room and I don’t touch them so I went a looked for them and they were gone so we cancelled the cards and started looking around the house.”

The thieves stole a number of items from the home including the couple’s passports, ice-creams from the freezer, but then the couple discovered that their most personal and valued items had been taken from the house.

“My wife’s wedding and engagement rings and her mother’s pearl necklace have been stolen.

“Her mum passed away so that has got a lot of sentimental value.

“They stole perfume as well so we started to suspect might be women because a lot of women’s things gone.

“I was in complete shock and disbelief and that turned to anger when we found the wedding rings and my mother in law’s peals were gone, they are the main things we are upset about,” the man said.

The victim said it didn’t take long for paranoia to set in and for the couple to begin suspecting people they knew for stealing from them.

and checking the CCTV footage at the stores where the stolen credit cards were used but the victim said he just wants the stolen items back.

“I’m just on the edge of my seat waiting for the police to call.”

The man said people need to be vigilant and sure of their home security because thieves could strike when it was least expected.

“Make sure your house is secure because burglars are everywhere in every suburb no matter where you live.

“If my house was more secure I don’t think they would have broken in.”

Police have released images of the stolen jewellery and ask anyone who has seen the items to contact Detective Senior Constable Julia Doyle at Narre Warren Police Station.

In the wake of a billboard featuring two women wearing hijab advertising an Australia Day festival causing a backlash online, a Muslim group is working for an inclusive Australia Day closer home.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association has held exhibitions in Narre Warren and Hampton Park recently and is continuing to dispel myths surrounding their religion with a national Australia Day Campaign.

From 14 to 26 January, homes in the Casey region will be receiving leaflets in the mail from the group that explain how the local Muslim community embraces the ethos of Australia Day. The community will also

participate in Australian flag hoisting ceremonies, Australia Day Dinners and Australia Day barbecues in mosques in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide on 26 January.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association’s secretary for Interfaith Harmony Tahir Mahmood said Australia Day was for everyone and all people could celebrate side by side.

“Our hope with this campaign is that everyone can celebrate Australia Day together and everyone will join with us in embracing and understanding one another,” he said.

This is the second year The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association has run an awareness raising campaign about the Islamic faith around Australia Day. “We are raising awareness

that Muslims are loyal to their homeland and our homeland is here,” Ahmadiyya Muslim Soofi Aziz said.

“The leaflets have quotes from the Quran and the prophet saying loyalty to country is a part of our faith.”

Mr Aziz said the idea of the campaign was to reach out to both Muslim and non-Muslim members of the community to dispel the myths surrounding the religion.

“We understand that the climate we are in at the moment there is a lot of misinformation that Islam is a religion that does not promote loyalty for country,” he said.

“We are trying to reach out to the broader community; nonMuslims and Muslims alike.”

Red Roo's amazing athletes With a swag of national titles, Red Roo Sport’s irrepressible basketballers are working hard to be considered for athletic scholarships in the United States.

The Dandenong-based club has an under 18s and under 20s team, both brimming with skillful players knuckling down to academically qualify and prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in May. Red Roo Sports director James Kerr, who mentors these young men, believes if they were based in the US, the majority of players would stand a very good chance of playing at a collegiate level.

“They’re amazing athletes and great young men who understand how to win and the discipline that it takes.

“We would love for each player to have the opportunity to advance in life through sports."

Mr Kerr said the barrier was higher for college recruits from Australia because of the cost to bring them over to the US.

But the prize is bright with NBA players at the upper echelons of Australian sports stars’ earnings.

Red Roo advises its players that success is a function of extreme hard work, dedication and discipline.

In December, both teams, with spectacular, high-tempo play, took out the national 2016 South Sudanese Australian Summer Slam championships to add to several titles over the past two years.

“I’d say (the Summer Slam) could be one of the best tournaments in the country. It’s amazing to watch,” Mr Kerr said.

Red Roo players, like Jo Jo Deng, Kueth Jock, Buom Kuoth Gatluak, Oyiti Amum, Michael Jok and Golong Golong, catch trains and buses from across Melbourne’s south-east - as far away as Traralgon and Pakenham - to be in the program.

They share a clear-eyed, gritty determination to make the college grade.

Jo Jo speaks of the importance of not just a sporting career but furthering his education.

“It’s like a family here,” Jo Jo says.

“James is like a father figure. He encourages us to stay healthy, teaches us discipline on and off the court and to be patient - things don’t come straight away.

“He’s been there for all of us.”

Without sponsors or government funds, Red Roo Sports absorbs all costs for its National Championship teams.

Training is based at the 24/7 Hoops courts in Dandenong South, which offers Red Roo players round-the-clock access.

“If we didn’t have these courts, we would not have a place to practice,” Mr Kerr said.

Red Roo aspires to expand to an under 16s boys’, open mens’ and a womens’ team for an increasing list of eager would-be players.

“We are trying to provide the correct pathway in what is considered a maze of difficult life decision making choices," Mr Kerr says.

“We’ve given them a little bit of hope.”

Well done to Andrew for taking the terrible circumstance of an aggravated burglary and the frustration and anger and, indeed, trauma that comes with this event, and turning it into something positive.

Neighbourhood Watch Casey was one of those groups which participated in the community event that Andrew was prompted to organise after his home and privacy was violated.

Here we are today, months later, and we see some progress, a commitment for more police, some now and more later.

An awakened council even more committed to working with the community to help solve this problem. Neighbourhood Watch stepping up in more and more local areas.

Community. This is the key word here, for this is not someone else’s problem to solve.

It is up to all of us to work together.

I am writing to inform you about a positive experience recently.

My Mum, who is 80 years old, blind and with other health issues, was admitted to Casey Hospital for what turned out to be a two-week stay.

The staff are to be commended - from the doctors to the physio, social workers, catering and cleaning crew but particularly the nurses - for being so hardworking and dedicated.

Of particular mention is Sonya and Mary.

Their care and concern for Mum and us was touching and refreshing to witness and we were all treated with respect.

Even in the midst of what is an extremely difficult job, they kept her dignity, which was important to her.

We very much appreciated how they treated us in our time of worry and distress.

I write in response to Learn from Jerusalem

by Kathleen Caldwell and Anzacs of Jerusalem by Philip Wright of Pakenham in the Berwick News on 12 January re the City of Casey seeking a further sister city as recommended by councillor Rosalie Crestani, the same Casey councillor that seeks State and Federal parliamentary seats in the past Casey council term 2012-2016.

How can councillor Crestani be so irresponsible and wasteful of Casey ratepayer funds?

How much do Casey rates have to increase annually to accommodate further overseas travel costs by its elected Casey councillors?

Do they really care?

Despite the many reasons for the establishment of additional sister and friendship cities at Casey ratepayers’ expense, those being the history of Israel, the temporary occupation of the 200 light horsemen in World War I and other unrelated trivial facts provided by the authors, the establishment of any further sister and friendship cities, and that includes other wasted expenditure costs by management and its councillors, are a total and continual financial drain on Casey constituents annually.

Ugly sister Thanks to the Berwick News for promoting debate on very important public issues in local government such as Casey’s plan to establish a sister-city link with Israel.

Reading last week’s replies from Kath Calwell and Philip Wright to my letter criticizing any proposed sister-city link with Israel, it is evident that both writers and some of Casey’s councillors may be looking at Israel through rose-coloured glasses.

Recent history shows that the United Nations Security Council has made some determinations about Israel which show Israel is far from being an example for the rest of the world (or Casey) to follow.

Israel is really an imperialist (or terrorist) state, illegally occupying Palestinian settlements.

Resolution 446 stated “that the policy and practices of Israel in establishing settlements in the Palestinian and other Arab territories have no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East”.

Furthermore, under the United Nations Human Rights Council “the council had resolved almost more resolutions condemning Israel than on the rest of the world combined”.

World leaders like Jimmy Carter and Mary Robinson have accused the Israeli Defence Force of war crimes against the Palestinian people.

Let me ask the questions why do we need sister and friendship cities, how do they service the Casey ratepayers, not its councillors, and how much above the $627,035, according to the Casey Travel Register 13 February 2015, are we prepared to accept?

If Casey ratepayers and councillors want overseas travel then they should either donate their personal salaries to the council so they can travel widely and extensively whatever their reasons and agendas.

I don’t want my Casey rates spent on Casey travel overseas, do you?

I recall previously Kathleen opposed overseas travel and wasted expenditure items, why the change Kathleen?

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Federal MP for Holt Anthony Byrne has backed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in his calls for a tightening of politicians’ entitlements.

The call comes less than a week after embattled Health Minister Sussan Ley resigned after news broke that she had used taxpayer money to fund trips to the Gold Coast with her partner.

It was during one of these publicly funded $3949 trips that she purchased an apartment worth $795,000 in May 2015.

A statement from Mr Byrne’s office says he “is deeply concerned about the revelations of significant expenditures by politicians on questionable grounds.”

Since the scandal broke, Mr Turnbull announced the introduction of an independent body to oversee expenditure by MPs that will be modelled on the UK’s Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.

Mr Byrne said in the statement he “is pleased to support Mr Turnbull’s recent announcements about an Independent Tribunal holding politicians to account on behalf of the public.”

Mr Byrne said the guidelines for travel by politicians were too ambiguous and needed to be reformed urgently.

Federal MP for Latrobe Jason Wood has echoed the sentiments of Mr Byrne, saying tax payers deserve a more transparent parliamentary entitlements system.

“Taxpayers rightly expect that the Australian Government will spend their hard-earned money wisely and with respect,” he said.

“The parliamentary expenses system needs to change and the government is implementing changes as recommended by the Independent Review into Parliamentarians’ Work Expenses.”

While Mr Byrne’s expenditure in the first half of 2016 was modest compared to other MPs, there was significant claims made by the member for Holt for Overseas Travel and Office Administrative Costs.

Between 1 January and 30 June 2016, Mr Byrne claimed $104,716.75 of public money for Office Administrative Costs such as office consum-

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Cranbourne Food Truck will serve for some time yet thanks to a generous donation from the Casey Cardinia Foundation and the love of the volunteers who man the operation.

It was six years ago when the concept for the food truck was born and in October 2011 the Cranbourne uniting church acquired a former CFA truck to convert into a mobile food service.

The Cranbourne Food Truck was one of nine community organisations to receive a grant from the Casey Cardinia Foundation Community Grants Program in 2016.

The project is completely funded by grants and donations from the community and treasurer Chris Marsh said the community support is what keeps the truck rolling.

“It was pretty exciting when we found out we had received the $2500 grant from the Casey Cardinia Foundation,” she said.

“We said ‘that’s good, we can go at least another six months’.

“It takes away the worry and while the operation hasn’t been precarious, this takes the pressure off and means one less grant you have to apply for.”

The money from the grant has been used to pay for the registration and insurance on the truck as well as to repair some rust and will be used for ongoing maintenance, diesel, and petrol for the generator.

Volunteer Sharon Start said the food truck was a valuable asset for the community and that it was great to have other community groups and organisations supporting the truck.

“The food truck provides a service that is greatly needed and appreciated buy those that use it,” she said.

“It’s wonderful for Cranbourne to have and wonderful to think the community are on board with us and supporting us and totally appreciate what we do for those in need,” she said.

The truck has developed and changed over the last six years from a basic truck with precooked sausages to a fully mobile food station with relief kits and meals.

The truck has grown a following over the years and the team behind it has volunteers lining up to get involved with the work it does.

“We now have four cooks, who cook a meal at home in their kitchens and we have a pie warmer and a microwave,” Ms Marsh said.

“We cater for around 20-30 people per night with quiches and sausage rolls on the truck and we now have a marquee so no weather events can stop us.”

Volunteer Roy Snook said the truck caters for all kinds of people, not just the homeless and numbers can vary drastically each night.

“There is no rhyme or reason as to why we get the people we do I think the least we have ever turnout was about four people.”

The truck not only provides a warm and nourishing meal but refers people to other services and offers social interaction for those that may not have other people to speak with.

“There are other agencies in Cranbourne that do the job during the day but we fill the gap of an evening,” Ms Start said.

“There is no one else after 5pm and sometimes we have had a few women who have just escaped a violent situation and we have been able to give them direction and help so the next day they know where to go.”

She’s spreading some joy

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A Berwick woman is on a mission to bring happiness to all those around her through her Empowered Happiness Project.

Carolyn King released a book of the same name 12 months ago after turning her life around following years of crippling depression and a suicide attempt.

It was in 2013 when Ms King took a handful of sleeping tablets in an attempt to end her life, having battled depression and low self-esteem.

Since releasing her book in 2016, Ms King’s approach to creating and sharing happiness has evolved to the point she is ready to create a happiness movement.

“Since launching the book I have created a website and have been releasing free guided meditations and one pdf meditation,” she said.

“I have also started a Facebook movement that is starting up and I really want to grow it and spread my message of happiness around.”

Since recovering from her depressive mentality, Ms King said it was important for people facing mental illness or even just down times to find a balance of treatment that worked for them.

“I want to let people know it’s okay,” she said.

“I see people going through issues and I can relate because of what I went though and I’m spreading the happiness for change but it does take work.

“I’m not looking to take away

“I want to build this online movement by creating more meditations to give away for free and I will be doing some on YouTube because I know not everyone is on Facebook,” she said.

“I am also looking at running face to face courses and am going to start mediation classes in the community of the same kind that have helped me.”

Ms King believes through finding a way to create internal happiness through her methods, people can be helped to find a new perspective which can improve their outlook and mood.

“I am giving the tools so people can have what they need to help themselves to do it and think about how they can help themselves.”

By Victoria Stone-Meadows CASEY City council is hosting a number of events across the municipality to celebrate Australia Day on 26 January.

Berwick, Cranbourne, Hampton Park and Tooradin will all have Australia Day events centred on their townships to celebrate the national day.

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said all residents are welcome to attend the events and encourages all the people of Casey to celebrate the day.

“It’s a day where we can come together as a community to celebrate all the great things about Australia and be-

ing Australian,” Cr Aziz said.

“Our people, the places, our diversity, sense of fair go, lifestyle, democracy and the freedoms we all enjoy.”

Cr Aziz said Australia Day in the City of Casey is a time for reflection, celebration and harmony between the diverse communities of the region.

“Australia Day is a day for all Australians so whatever your background, join in the celebrations in your local community or get together and celebrate with your family and friends,” Cr Aziz said.

“It’s also a time to reflect on our nation’s history and acknowledge our

past, whilst celebrating the present and recommitting to making Australia an even better place in the future.”

Open debut for Destanee

By Nick Creely In just 92 minutes, Narre Warren teenager Destanee Aiava has proven to the world she is going to be a force to be reckoned with for the next decade.

After qualifying as a maindraw wildcard entry as the national 18-and-Under champion, Aiava won her first qualifier at the Brisbane International earlier this month, knocking off the revered Bethanie Mattek-Sands before falling to champion player Svetlana Kuznetsova.

In her Australian Open debut on Monday, up against German qualifier Mona Barthel, the 273rd ranked Aiava put up a brave fight, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), and showing the immense qualities that have seen her become the first player this century to contest in the main-draw at a Grand Slam tournament.

The game looked gone for the 16-year-old, dropping the ninth

game of the second set after pushing a volley wide and then double-faulting.

But she surged back with composure, showing nerves of steel to save a match point and therefore level the second set 5-5.

The broadcasters were thrilled with the young star’s composure on the court, and despite a searing day of Melbourne heat, Aiava played beyond her years.

Her opponent, Barthel, was once ranked 23rd in the world, and was given an almighty scare against an enthusiastic athlete not yet out of school.

But what was most impressive about Aiava’s performance was her cracking backhand winner in the second set after a long rally and her subsequent fight until the very end.

Speaking post-match, Aiava was visibly disappointed but was thrilled to get the experience to play against the best in the world.

“It was pretty fun playing out there, it was a really good experience and I enjoyed it - this isn’t the first and last time I’m going to be here, there’s plenty more to come,” he said.

“I learnt how to be more composed out there, and I didn’t rush as much but it just wasn’t my day.

“I just focus what’s ahead for me and not dwell on the past I’m looking forward to the rest of the year and what’s ahead.

“I played alright but I felt I could have done better - I had a lot of chances and I didn’t take them so I have to work on that.

“It got a bit tight during the tie-break and I started rushing and not thinking through the points, but I think that’s just a matter of experience.”

But what the Australian public has learnt however, is that Aiava is a name to watch, and represents a future in Australian tennis that is exciting and driven.

Twenty20 finals to be decided

By David Nagel WGCA TWENTY20 KOOKABURRA CUP - FINALS PREVIEW Only three clubs have claimed the WGCA Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup with Kooweerup looking to continue that 11-year tradition on finals day at Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve on Sunday.

The Demons will be the sole representative of an exclusive group; with Cardinia and Tooradin the only other teams to have tasted success in the newest, shortest, and most exciting format of the game.

Tooradin won the first tournament in 2005/06 and the most recent title last year, with Cardinia (six titles) and Kooweerup (three) sharing the tasty, meaty bit of the sandwich.

But the Demons face a new challenge this year, with Devon Meadows, Pakenham and Upper Beaconsfield forming the silky quartet set to lock horns in Sunday’s finals series.

The Demons take on Devon Meadows in one semi-final on oval1, with Pakenham and Upper Beaconsfield colliding on oval-2. The two winners will meet for the title of Twenty20 champions of West Gippsland.

It’s a title that has narrowly eluded Upper Beaconsfield in the past, the Maroons three times runners-up after losing to Cardinia in 2009 and the Demons in 2012 and ’15.

One of the Maroons’ greatest ever players, leg-spinner Scott Pitcher, believes the time could be right for the Maroons to finally hoist some silverware.

“We’re pretty good at the short form of the game but we just can’t seem to get across the line,” Pitcher explained.

“Every player is in the game,

The Maroons - currently fifth on the Premier Division ladder - are the only member of the remaining four not certain of playing finals in the regular season. Kooweerup and Pakenham are top two in Premier Division while the Panthers are the runaway leaders in District.

“Look, we haven’t given up hope of playing finals this year but we’re no shoo-in like the others and hopefully that makes it a bit more important to us,” Pitcher said.

“The other teams are all quality but we firmly believe our best cricket will match them on the day.

We’ve always played this format of the game well and we understand what’s required to win.”

The Maroons’ understanding of

the short form was nurtured early in the piece, with former first-class player Shawn Flegler imparting his knowledge during his time at the club. Flegler was heavily involved with the Melbourne Stars in their initial years in the KFC Big Bash and brought a level of professionalism to Upper Beaconsfield.

“He was fantastic with what he brought to the table,” Pitcher enthused.

“Just little things like where to bowl to batsmen to concede a single, not a four, and how important fielding was before many people recognised it. I think the Twenty20 game has really improved local cricket and I think the association (WGCA) should genuinely consider scheduling some games in the regular season.”

This weekend looms as one of

the most exciting finals series on record, with marquee signings from all four clubs set to make an impact.

Devon Meadows has batsmen Chris Benedek from Casey-South Melbourne, Kooweerup its former junior and now Dandenong star Adam McMaster, while Pakenham has signed former Victorian-Under 19 representative Dale Tormey to get it across the line.

But the Maroons, well they lack nothing in comparison.

They have former Sri Lankan one-day international star Kaushalya Weeraratne in their line-up, the man who once rewrote the record books with the fastest domestic halfcentury, coming off just 12 balls.

“He’s a great player,” Pitcher explained.

“He used to bowl fast but relies on his batting more these days. He’s one of those blokes who you think is on 20 but he’s already on 40. Hopefully he can put that international experience to good use on the weekend.”

The semi-finals begin at 11.30am with the grand final scheduled for 3.15pm. There will be a jumping castle for the kids and prizes for the first spectator catch in either innings of the grand final.

Warragul Cup goes to the dogs The Warragul Greyhound Racing Club has attracted strong fields for Saturday’s heats of The Endeavour Locksmiths Group 2 Warragul Cup (460m).

The Warragul Cup is the second leg of the Gippsland Carnival, with expectations high following a massive launch in Sale last month.

A high-class field of sprinters from across Victoria is expected to compete for the $47,000 first prize on 28 January, as kennel stars chase a share of more than $800,000 in prizemoney across the Gippsland Carnival.

A sprint and distance series will link all four legs, including Sale, Warragul, Cranbourne and Traralgon, with a Gippsland Champion Sprinter and Gippsland Champion Stayer, crowned at the end of the carnival.

The stayers will show their strength over Warragul’s 680m course on Cup night as they vie for points to earn the title of the Carnival’s top stayer.

Warragul’s feature night will be held as a twilight meeting followed by Cranbourne taking centre stage on 11 February and Traralgon wrapping up the Carnival with a grand finale on 25 March.

There will be plenty happening off the track at Warragul with an alcohol-free area featuring GAP dogs to meet and pat, a special kids’ zone with Turbo the mascot, family activities and entertainment, local food trucks offering the best from local operators and a Gippsland spin on Fashions on the Field.

Parkfield roll reigning champs

By Nick Creely DDCA - TURF 1 & 2 REVIEW (ROUND 7) Parkfield have somehow managed one of the performances of the season, toppling the reigning champions Cranbourne at their home fortress, and it could have dire consequences.

Earlier in the day, the Parkers restricted the champs to just 6/144, with Lucas Ligt (66 not out) carrying the bat.

Champion batsmen Steven Spoljaric (17) and Matt Chasemore (8) were dismissed early, with the Parkers getting a look at a middle-order which hasn’t seen much batting this season.

The Parkers then grinded away with the bat, and with David Ford (33) and Hemantha Alles (25) playing crucial knocks, secured their first win of the season.

In one of the most vital matches in the season, Springvale South has annihilated a shell-shocked Berwick at Alex Nelson Reserve.

Bears skipper Jarrod Goodes sent in Craig Slocombe and his Bloods, where the home side pushed on from the platform set by openers Nathan King (38) and Michael Vandort (34) to post a tricky 9/191 off 40 overs. But as soon as the wily veteran Slocombe took the ball after tea and decided to roll his arm over, the game effectively ended.

In his eight-over spell, the DDCA legend notched up figures of 4/8, which included the wickets of Darren de Souza (7), Jarryd Wills (12), Josh Holden (1) and the dangerous Ryan Crawford (3). The Bears were left in tatters, bowled out for just 49 in a stunning batting collapse.

Heinz-Southern Districts charge towards finals continues to gather momentum, edging out a brave North Dandenong outfit at Lois Twohig.

In a season where every inch counts, the Cobras continue to do everything right after a slow start to the season, and sit just a solitary point out of the four.

But it could have been a lot worse for the Maroons, recovering from 5/23, but a bit of class by Clayton McCartney (59) rescued them from embarrassment and gave the bowlers some encouragement.

With the Maroons setting the Cobras a tricky 165 for victory, the visitors simply found a way to get the job done, with Shehan Bandaranyake (43) playing a vital knock.

An absolute stellar century by the in-form Matthew Hague (136) has seen Dingley crush Dandenong West and keep their slim finals hopes alive.

The star opening batsman has enjoyed a brilliant season at the top, and carved up the Bulls with 22 boundaries and two maximums in a brutal run-aball display.

The epic century lifted the Dingoes to an imperious 8/223 off 40 overs.

And despite a fighting half-century to Sam Weir (51), the Bulls were never truly in the game, finishing on 9/118 off 40 overs.

Ladder-leaders Hallam-Kalora Park have gone down in a thrilling clash to Mordialloc, with the Bloodhounds consolidating their spot in the top-four.

Sent in to bat, the Tigers could only muster up 107 off 37.3 overs, with Michael Mitchell top-scoring with 33 late in the innings.

And it took just 27 overs for the Saints to chase the total down, with Rhys Serpanchy (57 not out) starring with the blade.

VIC PREMIER REVIEW - ROUND 14 (DAY 1) It’s a moment that Luke Manders will never forget, and when he celebrated his milestone century as a Victorian Premier player on Saturday, all he wanted to do was push on for the good of the team.

The first-year Casey-South Melbourne batsman, who elected to join the club to play with some mates, turned heads with one of the performances of the season to date.

In a season in which several names have risen, seemingly from nowhere, Manders is just another talented local product that the Swans will be buoyed by.

With a gentle flick behind square-leg off Fitzroy-Doncaster spinner Ejaaz Alavi just after tea, Manders brought up a tremendous century, full of concentration, classical strokeplay, and a willingness to dig in when the going gets tough.

When he removed his helmet from his head to the acknowledgment of his teammates, the job was simply not done for him.

He went on to blast 159 off 270 balls, batting for almost six hours in the colossal effort, as the rising Swans made 7/302 at stumps against the reigning premiers.

As his innings wore on, the stroke-play became more aggressive, with another side to the patient opener being explored.

And it was a terrific start, as Devin Pollock (26) and Manders swiftly put on 44 runs before Pollock was removed by the dynamic bowling of Trent Lawford (2/57).

It then kick-started a patient and grinding 94-run partnership between Manders and Michael Wallace (33), who both knuckled down to create the platform.

And the partnerships kept on coming, as Manders continued to stay steady, punishing the bad balls and closely defending the good ones, as the Swans started to gather some momentum into a late day push.

Dylan Hadfield (24 not out) then chimed in late with some valuable runs.

The century-maker said that it was a great feeling to make

runs, but he’s only part the puzzle, and that a lot of hard work is still yet to come in order to clinch the desired result.

“It was pretty surreal to see that number against my name to be honest,” he said.

“I sort of had a lean patch in the middle of the year and it was nice to make some runs, but at the end of the day, it’s all about the team and that’s what I was thinking - I played my role which is the main thing.

“The score was just par I reckon - we may bat on a little bit next week I’m not too sure.

“Our bowlers are in great knick - I’d say we are pretty confident but Fitzroy have a deep batting side so it’s going to be tough.

“But it’s always excellent playing against quality opponents - you always want to play and beat the best.

“It’s going to take a great performance to get over the line for us.”

Speaking on the club’s finals hopes, Manders echoed that they are not looking too far ahead, and that they will approach every single situation the same.

“Session by session, ball by ball, that’s how BK (Brian Keogh) wants us to approach it - whatever happens in March happens.

“We can only control what happens now.”

The Swans are likely to resume batting next week, as they look to continue their stunning resurgence of the season.

Steve and Christine do it HAMPTON PARK BOWLS Hampton Park Club singles champions Christine Hendrie and Steve Barnes are the Casey Bowls District Champion of Champions after the finals at Pakenham on Sunday.

After the expected close starts, both Christine Hendrie and Steve Barnes played consistent bowls to their game plans, drawing to good leads mid game.

Christine beat local Pakenham lady, Joyce Andrus 25-14 and Steve beat Cranbourne RSL’s Daniel Byrnes 25-16.

Congratulations to both as they now progress to the Peninsula Region Champion of Champions series.

PENNANT The lawn bowling season resumed after the break with Hampton Park playing the powerful Mulgrave Country Club in two divisions.

Hampton Park (1) 3-82 lost to Mulgrave CC (1) 15-88 Division 1 at home and needing a win, the Parkers put in a spirited performance and were unlucky not to win, only going down overall by six shots. Shane Hardy, Andrew Brandolin, Ian Bartlett and Warwick Hardy led the way with a 30-18 win, while Geoff Ladner, Mark Paton, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm drew 19-19. John Wright, Christine Hendrie, Clint Mills and Shane Collins just went down 19-23 and Larry Simpson, John Nunan, Chris Barnes and Steve Barnes lost 14-28.

Players pay moving tribute to Sharon A special touch from the Lang Lang and Catani Cricket Club's on Saturday with a minute's silence observed before the start of play as a mark of respect for Sharon Miller, the much loved wife of Tim and mother of three children who lost her battle with illness last week. Players from both sides wore black armbands. Tim Miller is a senior premiership player with both clubs.

The Dandenong District Under 21s have missed out on the VMCU Neil Wright Shield final for the first time in five years, going down to Ringwood DCA at Rowley Allen Reserve in Keysborough.

The match, played on Sunday 15 January, was a disappointing one for the competition favourites, but they will now have to watch on from the sidelines.

Batting first, Ringwood were able to notch together an impressive 7/201 off 40 overs, with only DDCA skipper Jordan Hammond (2/46) providing much resistance with the ball.

In reply, the DDCA were bowled out for 142, despite a terrific 40 by Jakob Woinarski and a fighting 33 from Hammond.

Coached by DDCA legend Craig Slocombe, the team has nonetheless had another successful campaign, as they look to go one better in 2017/18.

Battling Bulls on the retreat

By David Nagel Cardinia’s vice-like grip on a place in the West Gippsland Premier Division finals series has weakened somewhat after the Bulls turned in a shocker against fellow premiership aspirant Pakenham at E Gunton Oval on Saturday.

The Bulls were expected to rebound after a surprise loss to Merinda Park, but were rolled for just 109 in response to the Lions 8/177 from their 40 overs.

It’s certainly not panic stations for the Bulls - they still have a 20-point advantage over fifth-placed Upper Beaconsfield - but they do look vulnerable as the pointy end of the season approaches.

They should salute against Emerald in the final one-day round of the season, before tough two-day matches against Tooradin and Kooweerup give a true indication of their potential.

A couple of stumbles and the Bulls last-round clash against Upper Beaconsfield could come with a valuable prize attached.

The Bulls once again relied too heavily on their two stars, Dwayne Doig (3/29 off 7) and Neil Barfuss (30), while the Lions were steady across the board.

Dom Paynter (35), Rob Elston (30) and the hard-hitting Tom Tyrrell (26 not out) set the platform, before Paynter (4/18 off 5.4), Jason Williams (4/31 off 8) and Tyrrell (2/16 off 6) dismantled the Bulls in the 32nd over.

The door is slightly ajar for Upper Beaconsfield (163) and they barged straight through with a comfortable victory over Pakenham Upper/Toomuc (7/126cc).

The Maroons weren’t overly impressive with bat, their modest total built largely on the efforts of Bath Perera (34) and Luke Willis (32), but they really tightened the screws in the field.

The Yabbies had no answers to the frugal line and length of Kyle Gibbs (1/17 off 8), Tiron Fernando (1/16 off 8) and Scott Pitcher (1/22 off 8), while Perera (2/36 off 8) leaked runs but was still important.

stupid of us not to give them a chance.”

There was some exciting action in the second-tier District Division with Tooradin (9/99) putting a significant down-payment on a finals position with a one-wicket win over Kalgidhar (96).

Chris Brennan (3/14 off 8) and Rick ‘Dutchy’ Holland (3/28 off 8) bowled the Seagulls into a winning position prior to tea, but the Gulls batsmen struggled in reply. Daniel Hunt (36) played a lone hand at the top before tail-enders Steve Hamill (14) and Dave Freeman (11 not out) steered their side home in a thriller.

Local cricket clubs are being encouraged to continue an already growing tradition by adding a splash of pink to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation on Pink Stumps Day, Saturday February 18.
