Donations are flooding in for a Norlane family left with nothing after fire destroyed their home weeks after they moved in.

Social media was alight yesterday with offers of kitchen items, furniture, clothing, bedding and more.

Tamara Viccars was one of several neighbours in Waitara Grove collecting for the Fitzell family after fire gutted their home.

Ms Viccars was running out of room for donations as the Indy went to press yesterday afternoon.

“We’re just getting floods and floods of donations,”

Ms Viccars said.

“I think we’ll be able to furnish an entire house for them.

“We’re going to replace all the kids’ Christmas presents because they lost everything the poor little things.“ The response showed the generosity of the Norlane community, Ms Viccars said.

“All my neighbours are completely lovely people and they just want to help.

“There are some things you simply can’t replace, like photos and that, so my heart goes out to them.”

Plans to rock city centre

By Luke Voogt A new live-music plan for central Geelong could draw big international acts to the city for weekday gigs, according to a local music promoter.

Hugo T Armstrong said council’s Central Geelong Live Music Action Plan (LiveMAP) would give the city’s struggling music industry a muchneeded boost.

“We can attract really big acts midweek in Geelong - if we get this right,“ said Mr Armstrong, who is on a council committee preparing the strategy.

“We could see a really big investment in Melbourne people coming here to see shows that are sold out in the city.”

Geelong should tap into the million-plus people living in Melbourne’s western suburbs, Mr Armstrong said.

“Geelong and the Bellarine is their backyard.

We’re 55 minutes from one of the best live music cities in the world - we should be gleaning off that.”

Mr Armstrong said Geelong’s music scene was suffering after losing live-music haunts like “The Nash”, set to re-open as a boutique bar.

“A lot of the bands aren’t coming down to Geelong at the moment. They’re literally side-swiping us - we need to build confidence in promoters.”

But smaller venues like Pistol Pete’s and larger halls like the Wool Exchange Geelong were already well-equipped to attract big music acts, Mr Armstrong said.

“I’m not for one second suggesting this will replace all the manufacturing that we’ve lost. But we’re sitting on a bloody goldmine here.”

Mr Armstrong said the plan was about coordinating elements like development and public transport to make the live music scene as attractive as possible.

The strategy would also include requirements for developers to sound-proof new buildings near venues and for new venues to do the same.

She fled to the backyard in a towel with her naked sons.

They struggled to open the backyard gate but neighbour Jess Gardner and her partner Cory Fedley smashed it down so they could escape.

“The woman ran back in because there was a dog inside and the kids followed, so I had to chase the kids and get them out,” Ms Gardner said.

The dog died but the family escaped, with Ms Fitzell and her eldest son sustaining minor burns.

Ms Gardner is now collecting donations for the family “I’ve been bombarded with messages from people wanting to help. I haven’t lived here very long myself but this just shows how strong the community is.”

The response left Ms Fitzell teary.

“Even strangers are donating left, right and centre. If not for them I don’t know what we would have done - we’d be homeless with nothing.”

“That’s why I’m proud to live in Geelong - everyone just gets together and helps when some-

one needs it.”

Ms Fitzell has nominated Jess Gardner and Mr Fedley for bravery awards.

“Before I could get out they were already there.

They were absolutely brilliant.”

Emergency services received a call at 12.37pm and fire crews took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control, said Corio Police Sergeant Andrew Rolfe.

Crumbling cliffs will force temporary closures of one of the main roads in and out of Geelong, VicRoads has announced.

Landslips after early-summer rain had undermined Newtown’s Deviation Road, which would close between Hyland and Deviation streets between 7.30am and 5.30pm from Monday until 27 January, VicRoads said.

History has fortuitously repeated for the descendants of Geelong 1931 premiership player Milton Lamb.

Family members gathered at Simonds Stadium this week to welcome Irishman Seamus McAreavey as he returned Milton’s lost premiership medal, which Seamus’s brother had found lying on a Belfast Street some time in the early ’90s - see Luke Voogt’s full story on page 13 of today’s paper.

As a token of thanks, Seamus was presented in turn with a copy of From Ireland to Port Phillip, written by Milton’s niece, Jenny Acopian, as a history of the local Lamb tribe.

The irony was not lost on our author.

“Now the medal’s come back on the same journey,“ Jenny noted.

And hopefully on a one-way ticket!

Darryn Lyons’ sacking as mayor left a foul taste in some mouths but one of his other ventures is apparently much better on the palate.

Well, that’s according to website Menulog, which recently awarded his Pizzas With Attitude the title ‘Best Pizza in Geelong Summer 2016’.

And customers would hope Menulog should know, given it’s described as Australia’s biggest online platform for ordering takeaway food deliveries.

Equally adept online, Dazza was quick to promote his win on Twitter with an image of the Menulog trophy.

“Says it all,” he posted underneath.

Or, in pizza parlance, it was one with the lot.

The Menulog win was actually for Pizzas With Attitude’s store in East Geelong, which brought flooding back some gastronomically disturbing memories for Double Take.

the same Wall Street store, which way back then was also a pizza outlet - the long since defunct Flying Tomato Brothers.

Charged with deliveries, young Double Take spent a good many nights hurtling about south-eastern Geelong in a tiny silver hatchback; a giant, illuminated tomato atop and steamy pizza pouches stacked high in the rear.

Great work it was, too, especially once hardwon experience allowed the maze of Solar Drive courts to be navigated before dinners turned cold. This was pre-GPS, after all.

But what’s a professional without product knowledge? So one quiet evening, Double Take ventured into the takeaway’s cooking area, knife and paper plate in hand, to sample the ingredients in pre-pizza state.

Truly, they were not what Menulog would

have had in mind for Geelong’s Best Pizza summer of any year.

The vegetables were standard but the industrial-grade blocks of cheese and ham were like soapy fat with an animal essence aftertaste that lingered way beyond the gagging reflex.

And don’t imagine the sci-fi horror of the seafood mix: small, greeny-greyish, bi-valvelike critters of undiscernible origin or species. One close look, or sniff, was enough to scuttle any taste test.

How all this came together into a palatable, reasonably popular, food standards-compliant package remains a mystery.

Were they the first Pizzas With Attitude?

Road blitz nabs 1400 offenders

A haul of 1404 drivers breaking the law on local roads has alarmed police, according to Geelong Inspector Graham Banks.

Hundreds were involved in dangerous driving, including 50 over the alcohol limit or on drugs and almost 800 speeding.

The figures from three-week Operation Roadwise in Geelong and the Surf Coast were “significantly up“ on last year, Insp Banks said.

“It’s a concern given we had a significant increase in road deaths last year, not just in Geelong but throughout Victoria.”

The operation ended last week was “successful but unsuccessful”, Insp Banks said.

He was sick of drivers putting themselves and others in danger.

“Clearly some messages haven’t been getting through to people.”

Insp Banks was particularly angry at drivers who had “committed an offence before getting behind the wheel”.

Over 300 were caught drink-driving, on drugs, unlicensed or in unregistered vehicles, he said.

“They’re obviously some of the more serious offences.

“Their (the drivers’) capacity to drive a motor vehicle is severely impaired. Often they’ve committed another offence, which is what has brought them to our attention.”

Geelong: 31 drink-drivers; eight on drugs; 82 disqualified or unlicensed; 421 speeding; 23 seatbelt offences; 20 mobile phone offences; 101 unregistered vehicles; three impoundments; total infringements, 850.

Surf Coast:10 drink-drivers; nine on drugs; 22 disqualified or unlicensed; 363 speeding; 10 seatbelt offences; three mobile phone offences; 41 unregistered vehicles; two impoundments; total infringement 554.

Insp Banks said police would be out in force for the rest of summer in an effort to reduce road trauma.

“We will continue to run operations ... in areas where we know people are committing these offences.”

TAC senior road safety manager Samantha Cockfield said the results were disappointing, although the “vast majority do the right thing“.

“If you do drink drive, speed, drive under the influence of drugs or talk on your mobile phone while driving, getting caught is the best thing to happen to you because the alternative could be devastating.“ The local road toll increased when a man died after his car struck a tree in Anakie early Wednesday morning.

‘Conflict’ prompts boat ramp review “Conflict” between beachgoers and anglers launching boats has helped prompt a review of ramps along the Surf Coast, according to its foreshore manager.

Feedback from users would help “longterm planning” for the three ramps at Torquay, Anglesea and Lorne, said the Great Ocean Road

Coast Committee.

The committee cited “concerns” about boat movements around the ramps at “popular family beaches”.

The committee said safety was its “primary focus”, noting that beachgoers must avoid bathing within 50 metres of a boat ramp in use.

Bushfire safety hot topic for district Arsonists and travelling conmen are the targets of Crime Stoppers’ new state campaign, Geelong heard this week.

Forest Fire Management Victoria Steve Pellicano warned residents to be wary as the campaign visited the city on Wednesday.

“There have been a number of suspicious fires in the Otways,” he said.

Mr Pellicano urged locals to do their part preventing fires.

“What we’re asking from everyone today is not complex, it doesn’t involve any paperwork or special expertise but it’s just as crucial to protecting the community.

“At the end of the day we want our community protected at all times.”

Mr Pellicano warned against unsafe activities

in the region’s grassy and bushland areas.

“Whether it’s a campfire on a total fire ban day or you’re grinding or welding and there’s a spark, reckless bushfire arson can still result in the same tragic consequences as deliberate arson.”

Consumer Affairs Victoria’s Gary Jennings warned of conmen preying on the elderly and vulnerable.

“If you suspect a conman is at your door, just say no to them and ask them to leave,“ he said.

“If they refuse, they’re breaking the law.”

Mr Jennings urged residents to report suspected cons.

“The trouble is a lot people, when they get ripped off by these guys, are too embarrassed to report it.”

Learning the ropes from ‘Psycho’ Young wrestlers face main event Two of Geelong’s wrestling hopefuls will make their ‘main event’ debut after months of gruelling training with local Australian champion Danny Gibbons.

The event would be the first of its kind in Geelong for five years, Danny said.

The 28-year-old, known in the ring as ‘Danny Psycho’, grew up in Lara and has wrestled in Australia’s top competition for 13 years.

“Me and my brother used to do it on the trampoline,” he said.

“Our parents signed us up. They thought it best we learnt how to do it properly because we were going to hurt each other.”

The local panel beater is an eight-time Professional Championship Wrestling (PCW) champion and has played both ‘face’ (hero) and ‘heel’ (villain) in the ring.

“I enjoyed being a heel more because it’s easier,” Danny said.

“The face gets beaten up for most of the match.

But the audience enjoys me as a face more because of the flashy moves I do.”

Danny said his flashiest move was the dangerous Spanish Fly, in which he back-flipped with his opponent into a slam.

The adrenaline rush drew him into the business but his five-year-old daughter kept him competing, he said.

“She loves it.

“She’ll come backstage every night to make sure I’m alright. On the night she’ll hate the person I’m wrestling.”

Last time Danny wrestled in Geelong he was up against Buddy Murphy, now in the world’s top competition - the WWE. But watching wrestling on TV “bores the hell out of ” Danny, he admitted.

“When you get thrown onto aluminium ladders there’s no way to fake that,” Danny said.

“Your pain threshold’s got to be a little bit higher than a normal human being.”

Danny has been training young Geelong wrestlers Brodie Wickenden and Jake Campana, along with five others, since opening his wrestling school last August.

Plenty more have tried but left when they realised how tough it was, Danny said.

“They go through one lesson but don’t come back because they go home too sore.”

Brodie, 21, said taking to the ring in Geelong would be a dream come true. The Geelong East signwriter competed as heel Edward Dusk in a “minor” event a few months ago, he said.

“It was the greatest moment of my life to be honest.

“I have to make them boo me and I love it. It’s indescribably rewarding ... bringing a reaction out of a person.”

Learning to wrestle with Danny Psycho was not for the faint-hearted, Brodie said.

“The first month is very rough. It hurts a lot more than a lot of people think it will.

“We’ve had a few people come in who think, ‘I’ve watched wrestling - I know what I’m doing’, but it’s a different once you’re in there.”

CADEL EVANS GREAT OCEAN ROAD RACE SATURDAY 28 AND SUNDAY 29 JANUARY 2017 The City of Greater Geelong is proudly hosting the 2017 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

GENERAL EVENT TRAFFIC ADVICE Latrobe Terrace (Princes Hwy) in Geelong and the Geelong Ring Road will remain open at all times during the weekend to ensure north/south traffic movements though the City of Greater Geelong are maintained.

Rolling Road Closures will be used to stage the Elite Races. If you are travelling along or across the course as a rolling road closure comes through: • •

You will be stopped by the lead police vehicle and asked to park in a safe area on the side of the road. You will have to wait for the race to pass through; once the race has passed the police tail car will inform you that it is safe to move on. Please be aware that there may be some tail riders still on the road.

It is estimated that you will have to wait for no longer than 15-20 minutes.

The rolling road closure will be supported by some fixed road closures to assist in keeping the course roads free of traffic when the race is coming through.

Temporary Road Closures All major intersections remain open, other than when the race passes by. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the events via existing footpaths. Where roads are closed for short periods, access across roads will be via marshalled course crossing points. Premier ‘shield’ for MPs

By Luke Voogt The Andrews Government is “shielding” two Geelong MPs from investigations of alleged election rorts, an Opposition MP has claimed.

Lara MP John Eren and Bellarine counterpart Lisa Neville were among a number of Labor MPs who Opposition Leader Matthew Guy last month accused of misusing taxpayers’ money.

Mr Guy said Labor signed up casual employees through electoral offices but instead directed them to work in its Community Action Network during the 2014 election campaign.

Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay

said Mr Eren and Ms Neville would have committed a “gross misuse of taxpayer money” if the allegations were proven, using state staff for party purposes.

Mr Ramsay accused the government of blocking Ombudsman Debra Glass’s investigation.

The government’s latest tactic, an appeal to the High Court, was a third attempt to prevent exposure of the Labor “rorting”, he said.

“The Andrews Government has tried every trick in the book. Why would the Andrews Government spend millions of dollars ... to prevent the Ombudsman from investigating alleged rorting of the system?

“My hope is that the High Court will throw out

the Andrews Government’s appeal, like the Supreme Court did, and justice will prevail on these serious allegations.”

Ms Neville said the government had done nothing wrong.

She accused Mr Ramsey of spreading “misinformation”.

“As the government has said on multiple occasions, no rules have been broken,” Ms Neville said.

“All of my staff over 14 years ... have tirelessly worked to serve the communities of Geelong and Bellarine.”

Mr Eren declined to comment while the matter was before the courts.

‘Men in black cars’ force police off road, evade pursuit Two men with allegedly stolen vehicles forced police into “evasive action”, striking one officer, in northern Geelong on Monday morning.

The incident began when officers investigated a suspicious vehicle in Madden Avenue, North Shore, about 8am, Victoria Police said.

“When they arrived they noticed a black Holden Commodore and a black Nissan Pathfinder in the street along with two men,” police headquarters said.

“The men noticed police and got into the cars and attempted to drive from the scene.

“The Commodore, possibly bearing homemade plates, drove off and forced a police car to take evasive action to avoid a collision, while the driver of the Nissan encountered difficulties while trying to start his vehicle.

“Officers attempted to remove the driver from the Pathfinder but he managed to start the vehicle and clipped a member while attempting to flee.

He also drove at police vehicles and was last seen driving erratically along Melbourne Road, North Geelong, after a pursuit was called off for safety reasons.” Investigations discovered that the Nissan, registration AIB-502, was stolen.

Warming note UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail A warmer-than-average December has completed a year .7C hotter than normal in Geelong.

December finished around 1.1C above the monthly average temperature, with seven days over 30C. Geelong’s highest temperate for the month reached 37.7C on the 25th - the city’s hottest Christmas Day since 1945.

December was also very dry compared to the monthly average and the rest of the year, which was surprisingly wet.

Only eight days of the month recorded rain, with metropolitan Geelong receiving an Lindsay Smail average 16mm compared to the latest 30-year average of 41.9mm.

December had four strong-wind days, with a maximum gust of 83km/h recorded at Breakwater’s official weather station on the 8th.

Only one thunder day was experienced for the month, on 29 December. However, massive flash floods in Melbourne the same day mostly missed Geelong, with only 10mm recorded over three associated days.

The warm December delivered an annual result .7C above average for Geelong, with a mean daily temperature of 15.3C compared to the 30-year figure of 14.6C. Twenty-four days in 2016 were above 30C. The average annual figure is 21.

Long-lost medal makes it home

THE 1931 premiership medal of late Geelong player Milton Lamb has finally returned to his family, after decades lost in Northern Ireland.

Irishman Seamus Mc Areavey handed the precious heirloom to Milton’s daughter Vivienne Reed in a ceremony at the Cats' Heritage Centre on Monday.

“It’s back to where it belongs that’s the main thing,” he said.

Seamus’s older brother Billy found the medal in Belfast about two decades ago and placed it in a screw-top jar, where it remained until Seamus spotted it.

“It’s a good job Billy kept the medal all this time,” he said.

“Anybody else might have sold it for the gold content or melted it down.”

Billy couldn’t remember exactly where he found the medal and the only clue to its origin was the inscription: ‘Geelong F.C. 1931 M. Lamb’.

Seamus searched the name and discovered the medal belonged to Milton Lamb, the last player of Geelong’s 1931 premiership team to die.

“I was just a pity that we hadn’t have found out sooner,” he said. “It would have been nice to hand it personally into Milton’s hand.”

Seamus decided his upcoming trip to Australia would be the perfect chance to return the medal to the Lamb family.

He contacted the Indy in December, who tracked down Milton’s last surviving daughter.

The 72-year-old guarded the medal closer on the flight to Australia.

“I kept it in my pocket the whole time,” he said.

He returned it safely to Vivienne, who was thrilled to have it back in the family.

“I think it’s incredibly generous by both Seamus and Willy,” she said.

“We’ll have a big family gathering soon so all the grandchildren and great grandchildren can see it.”

Letters Dole deadline a Spanish revolution On reading in the 23 December Indy a letter headlined ‘Punishing the jobless’, I recalled a dole scheme I heard about in Spain in 2014.

The scheme might sound tough to some Australians but it works over there.

Unemployment benefits are paid for 12 months and then stop. A six-month extension is possible but any funds received during the extended period must be repaid.

This heightens the incentive to accept employment. Presumably recipients can’t be too choosy and might have to take whatever work is available.

As positions vacant are always advertised in Australia, there is work to be had to improve our economy.

Maybe our easy, limitless dole program encourages people to be selective about employment.

Trying a different system here might well prove to lower unemployment of the able-bodied, giving them a new sense of confidence and worth as well as work experience.

I parked in a three-hour section of Brougham Street, adjacent to the City’s building.

The meter sign on the post said maximum three-hour parking was $5.30. I put $5 in the ticket machine at 9.44am and was given 1 hour, 51 minutes of parking.

That calculated to $3.31 an hour. For another 30 cents I would have got three hours’ parking but who would think to put in another 30c.

I thought the ticket machine must have been faulty, so I went into the City office to explain. I wasted my time.

I was virtually told, ‘That’s the way it is and the machine’s working fine’.

While it’s understandable G21 has sought to be all things to all people across a range of pillars and hence meekly accepts occasional drip-feed funding benefits, why are states like Queensland and now South Australia, with the submarine contract, leaving us in their wakes?

G21 needs to become from within more proactive, especially given the likelihood of an extension of the City of Greater Geelong proxy parttime administration trio.

G21 needs a Peta Credlin as CEO to prioritise, lead and navigate through governance Avalon Airport international accreditation and funding for a fresh food export hub, together with terminal and runway upgrades.

It’s about jobs and a fresh approach - now! All manner of wand waving, navel gazing and what might be decades down the track is but talk, and essentially entertaining nonsense.

An up-and-about G21 would be best placed to provide the walk in what has to be a regional same-page strategy.

US exposure lost Mid-last year an associate producer of a smashhit US television program contacted me to arrange filming of my Tasmanian tiger search in the Otways and Surf Coast.

The program applied for permits to film in the Angahook-Lorne State Park. Sadly, the associate producer has informed me that the detailed applications were knocked back.

The program will now not visit the Otways and Surf Coast, costing the region massive exposure.

Can’t bank on Andrews Daniel Andrews is a fabulous planner.

The trouble is, though, that with his head so far up in the air and visions of himself as being remembered as a wonderful leader and innovator he has totally missed the really important point.

It has been so well-known for years that coalpowered power stations are slowly crumbling and in danger of needing far too many millions of dollars to be financially viable. Not to mention the screams at the use of polluting brown coal.

Aided and abetted by the equally unrealistic, Mr Andrews hasn’t made positive alternatives for the citizens of Victoria.

A real innovation of recent times is the energy banks that complement solar power and which are available right now. As solar panels make more power than we can use during the daytime, and which goes into the grid at continually diminishing prices, these batteries store the power to be utilised at night.

The billions of dollars our government brags of having in the coffers could be well utilised by offering us a subsidy to install these energy banks in homes.

Of course, Mr Andrews would not fall into the trap of accepting inflated prices that government projects so often attract, or of applying proper regulations He should do us the favour of ensuring that Victorians can be leaders for this wonderful way of saving the environment and our pockets at the same time.

This play is a really Wicked treat!

By Luke Voogt Modern theatre classic Wicked will come to Geelong for the first time this month after more than a decade of international success.

Newtown actress Sophie Collins was keen to get on stage as Galinda - The Good Witch of the North.

“It’s not a typical role I would have played in the past,” she said.

“This is a really exciting and challenging role for me.”

Collins spoke to the Indy after the cast’s practice with a full orchestra last week.

“For a first rehearsal it was pretty incredible.”

The play’s recent change in theatre rights has finally let directors like Melbourne’s Alistair Smith create their own take, Collins said.

“The way he’s constructing it and putting it together is completely different. But it still has all those amazing songs that we all love.”

Collins will team up with Melbourne actress Morgan Heynes, who plays the “misunderstood” Elphaba - The Wicked Witch of the West.

“She is a real find,” she said.

“We’re lucky to have her.”

Collins grew up in Geelong, and her eclectic career began in 1986 playing Annie at the age 12.

She studied at the Victorian Academy of Arts before leaving for a small role in Neighbours.

“As a 21-year-old trying to choose whether I knuckle down with my exams or take this role on Neighbours ... it was an easy choice,” she said.

During a working holiday in England she casted actors for legendary British producer Cameron McIntosh and made the semi-finals of BBC Radio 2’s Voice of Musical Theatre.

“Ironically, the woman who won that went on to play Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Wicked,” she said.

Collins won Music Theatre Guild of Victoria’s best supporting actress for playing “Mrs Banks” in Mary Poppins, while her portrayal of an infant murderess in Hatpin was too realistic for some.

“After my siblings came to see me at that show they were very hesitant to let me look after their children,” she joked.

Wicked, which premiered in San Francisco 2003, is alternative take on iconic 1939 film the Wizard of Oz. Long before Dorothy arrived in the Land of Oz, there was another smart but misunderstood

girl, born with emerald green skin and an extraordinary talent.

When she meets a popular bubbly blonde, their rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships ... until the world decides one is good and the other wicked.

Footlight Productions will bring Wicked to Geelong for two weeks starting on 27 January.

Unique works to go on exhibition Geelong Sculptors will hold their first ever Surf Coast exhibition - Summer Sculpture - in Anglesea this month.

Anglesea husband and wife team Rowan and Cinnamon Stephens will be among the 20 sculptors exhibiting.

Cinnamon, 47, has been sculpting metal full time for most of her working life.

“I’ve been living off my sculpture since the only ’90s,” she said.

Rowan, 60, has helped Cinnamon in her metalwork studio for ten of the eleven years they have been together.

“In the last few years he’s become a sculptor himself which is fantastic,” she said.

“Now we’re working together full time. It’s enabled me to do a lot more with my art - having someone to help.”

Together they create metal dragon flies, sea dragons, gates, screen and “everything in between”.

“It’s different every day,” Cinnamon said.

“I love that we can bring a client’s vague ideas into reality. It’s never what they imagine - it’s always something more and they’re pleased to have something so unique.”

The couple went to Italy last May for Cinnamon’s 10-day artist in residency and together they created two “major” sculptures that remain in Umbria.

“This was a very exciting time for us, and it really consolidated our studio partnership,” Cinnamon said.

Previously Rowan ran a scrap metal business, which the couple integrated into their sculpture.

He said there was a beauty in “bringing some-

Rowan was looking forward to seeing the variety of sculptures on display this month.

“It’s amazing how many talented people there are down on the Surf Coast,” he said.

“It’s always interesting setting up the exhibition and seeing what people have created.”

Summer Sculpture will feature jewellery, pottery, metal work, furniture and even sculptures made from hardened seaweed.

The exhibition opens at 5pm tonight at the Surf Coast Art Space and runs until 29 January.

SHELL CLUB MELODIC: Irish folk singer Roesy will play in Queenscliff this weekend

A touch of Irish comes to town Irish singer-songwriter Roesy will bring his “crystalline” voice to Queenscliff Saturday in the first show of his 2017 Victorian tour.

The show will feature songs from the veteran folk artist’s seventh album ‘Wolf Counsel’, which he released in 2015.

Audiences will also get a taste of Roesy’s newest music, as he performs a number of yet-to-berecorded songs.

Roesy has won acclaim both locally and in Ireland.

The Irish Times said he “is armed with a crystalline pair of vocal chords” while Faster Louder described him as an “impressive musical talent.”

Roesy began his musical career 1996 at Edwin Collin’s London studio, when he signed to record

label Warner Chappell.

There he recorded his first bunch of songs, which became his debut album ‘Sketch the Day, Paint the Night’ in 2001.

During the past 20 years, Roesy has played with international figures like Bert Jansch, Ron Sexsmith, Paul Brady, Billy Bragg, John Martyn, Joan Armatrading, Donovan, Shane MacGowan and celebrated Irish author Paul Durcan.

He is also a talented visual artist, according to promoters, exhibiting work at The Artery Gallery in Warrnambool.

Roesy will play at Queenscliff ’s Salt Contemporary Art Gallery at 8pm Saturday.

He will embark on Irish and New Zealand tours with his newest material later this year.

MUSICAL: Students practice at the Geelong Summer Music Camp.

A real thriller for Friday the 13th Young musicians from Geelong and abroad will “Thrill and Chill’ with creepy classics tonight, following a week-long music camp.

Camp secretary Michael Wilding said the ghoulish showcase would include scary soundtracks like Michael Jackson’s Thriller and the Addams Family Theme.

“Because the concert has landed on Friday the 13th we’ve gone in a horror direction.”

The show will feature a symphony orchestra, two concert bands, two string orchestras and a stage band.

It’s “massive" finale will see each of the camp’s 230 students - aged nine to 21 - performing on stage at once.

The students, some from as a far as New Zealand, have been fine-tuning their art at the 37th Geelong Summer Music Camp this week.

They immersed themselves in music and electives like “film music composing” and “school of rock” under the guidance of experienced local conductors and tutors.

“It’s a big social thing for them as well,” Mr Wilding said.

“A lot of them have friends they met here that they come back and see every year.”

Infinite Dance Studios prides itself on creating an atmosphere that nurtures learning, individuality and self-confidence. Director Fiona LucaKingsbury has created a facility that encourages her students to strive for excellence in every class that they attend.

2017 marks 12 years at Infinite Dance Studios and director Fiona Luca could not be more proud of its achievements thus far.

Fiona reflects on their humble beginnings with pride and excitement: “From 33 students in 2006, we taught over 310 students each week in 2016” and this year.

A highlight in IDANCE 16, Infinite’s end of year production, was the ‘Boys’ section, paying tribute to the past and present talented male dancers who have called Infinite home for many years.

Circus arts part of a future elite GEELONG’S CircArts Academy is fast developing a reputation for producing elite circus performers of tomorrow.

Former Geelong student Leigh Rhodes has just graduated with his Bachelor of Circus Arts from the acclaimed National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) and is embarking on a full-time career of performing nationally and abroad in 2017.

Two other Geelong students, Naz and Charli, were recently accepted into the 2017 NICA program; testimony to the amazing work of the professional coaches at the CircArts Academy.

Some people may think circus consists of simply juggling and hoola hoops, but that is just the tip of the iceberg for today’s circus performers, according to CircArts Academy owner Rosa Pagani.

“We teach the lot,’’ Rosa says, before rattling off a list that includes contortion, hand balancing, trapeze, silks, aerial hoop, tumbling, juggling, strength and flex work.

“What I love about circus is that unlike any other sport, no matter what your size, shape or age, you can find a discipline that you can train to an exceptional level.

“Contortion requires flexibility, juggling hand-

eye co-ordination … there are so many apparatus and everyone has a role to play.’’

CircArts Academy is based in Breakwater and is home to more than 250 budding circus performers each week. The youngest is aged three and the oldest is 68.

“Not everybody is here to become a professional performer but they are all here because they enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere,’’ Rosa says.

“They enjoy the challenge of learning a new skill and gain confidence as they achieve their goals, under the guidance of some amazingly talented coaches.’’

CircArts Academy is taking enrolments for 2017. Beginner classes are available for children and adults-alike and no experience is necessary.

“Everyone gets an opportunity to learn, whether they are a novice wanting to try a new after-school activity or say an experienced dancer or gymnast looking to develop further acrobatic skills,’’ Rosa says.

Plenty of flathead and others too ON THE BITE

Chris Pitman Anglers encountered a wide variety of fish species off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads over the past week.

Drifting for flathead in 40m to 50m produced some large flathead, with Gone Fishing Charters’ Chris Vasilevski reporting large numbers of fish with an excellent average size.

Kingfish holding between Point Lonsdale through to Bancoora lured many other anglers offshore. Trolling white-skirted lures with a squid strip attached was a productive tactic.

Other offshore anglers crossed paths with large schools of Australian salmon feeding on the surface.

Daniel Baden and I headed out over the weekend to find the kingfish hard to tempt but enjoying fantastic sport on the salmon.

Schools of southern bluefin tuna to 15kg were also turned up occasionally of Point Lonsdale. The tuna sometimes responded to small skirted lures.

Kingfish dominated reports from The Rip, where anglers enjoyed a slightly better class of fish. Jigging knife jigs to schools located on sounders worked a treat.

Trellys Geelong’s Kevin Hunter and Robert Vecoli spent an hour or so catching squid before trolling some in The Rip with a downrigger. A kingie of 4kg soon took one of the baits shortly before another of a similar size seized the other.

Queenscliff ’s grass beds continued hosting some of the Bellarine Peninsula’s premier whiting fishing, with the average size 40cm. Squid were nearby just around the corner at the entrance to Swan Bay. Michael Moore fished the bay for gummy sharks with salted trevally baits on Monday night. Next week could provide opportunities to hunt kingfish in The Rip or offshore from Point Lonsdale, while whiting and squid will be a target from St Leonards to Queenscliff.

Any realistic hopes the Geelong Cricket Club may have had of participating in this season’s Premier Cricket finals were wiped away last Saturday as they were thrashed by a ruthless Melbourne Cricket Club.
