Grant is capital

By Alana Mitchelson OFFICER’S Gum Scrub Creek Primary School has received a $1.2 million capital grant to create an integrated children’s centre as part of the new development.

The Aspect Estate site will provide an early learning facility for 109 pre-school children.

Its facilities will include a maternal health centre, consultation rooms, kindergarten facilities, after hours care, early childhood intervention services and a ’community room’.

Cardinia Shire Council has contributed additional funding towards the State Government project.

The integrated facility would bring a range of maternal and child health, and family services under the one roof to help meet the growing demand for early education and care in the region.

Member for Eastern Victoria Region Daniel Mulino said the government was focused on giving children a “strong start“ in life.

“Our local area has experienced a significant baby boom in recent years. Investments like this will pay enormous dividends to Cardinia Shire families for years to come,” Mr Mulino said.

“High-quality early years of education and

care are vital to giving every child the best start in life.

“The State Government is helping more Cardinia families access kindergarten closer to home. We’re ensuring that children have access to early childhood services no matter where they live.”

Victoria has experienced unprecedented population growth, with an expected increase of 300,000 new students by 2031.

There are 417 births in the region per quarter and five new families move into the shire each day.

Gum Scrub Creek Primary School is currently in the design phase, with construction due to be completed by the end of the year.

It is being designed to accommodate longterm student enrolments of 475 students, with a peak enrolment of up to 900 students.

The school will house a full-sized indoor recreation hall with netball and basketball court lines, utilising the nearby public reserve.

Some $13 million was allocated towards the Officer development in the 2016-’17 State Budget.

Gum Scrub Creek Primary School is one of 12 new schools to be built across the state before 2018.

Hobbler refused bail

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A HALLAM man has been refused bail after allegedly slashing a drinking buddy with a large knife in a drunken and bloody fight.

James Thokluel, who hobbled on a sore leg in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court dock on 9 January, faced up to 20 years’ jail if found guilty of recklessly causing serious injury to the victim with an offensive weapon.

His lawyer indicated he would contest the charge on the grounds of self-defence, given Thokluel had also received multiple machete wounds in the fight.

The court was told Thokluel had fought with

his wife when he returned to his home with mates after a drinking session on 9 December.

One of Thokluel’s mates told police the wife was being beaten and he intervened in the lounge room conflict.

He claimed he was then punched to both sides of the head by Thokluel, and he retaliated with punches.

Thokluel then allegedly collected up to three large kitchen knives and deeply slashed the top of the victim’s hand, resulting in severe blood loss.

At the end of the fight, both Thokluel and the victim were bloodied, hospitalised and required plastic surgery. Thokluel was treated for stab

wounds to his shoulder.

In July, Thokluel had been served with an interim intervention order allegedly due to verbally abusing his wife and intentionally self-harming with a knife during an argument.

The defence submitted for Thokluel to be bailed to live at the Hallam home, vacated by his family who now live with the accused’s parents.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted Thokluel had no prior criminal history, had worked as a volunteer for a foster-care charity and had strong family support.

On the other hand, Ms Spencer said a history of family violence, abuse of alcohol and the use

of weapons were heightened risk factors for ongoing violence.

“My concern is you’re an unacceptable risk of re-offending and endangering the safety of and interfering with witnesses in this case.

“The challenge I have with (placing Thokluel on strict bail conditions) is these new allegations arise in circumstances in which there already was an intervention order in place.

“So I can’t be confident that you’ll be able to follow bail conditions or court orders in the future.”

Thokluel was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 January.

Police in huge heroin find

By Cam Lucadou-Wells MORE than $60,000 worth of heroin as well as knives, casino chips and cash have been allegedly seized by police from a car parked outside a Hallam hotel.

Operations Response Unit police responded to reports that two men appeared to be trying to steal the car in the Princes Highway hotel’s car park just after midnight on 4 January.

Police say a “large chunk of a tar-like substance” believed to be heroin was found on the car’s floor.

Three knives, cash, about $1200 of casino chips and a large amount of suspectedly stolen cigarettes were also found in the car.

A 39-year-old Cremorne man was arrested at the scene and charged with trafficking a commercial quantity and possessing a drug of dependence.

He was remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 5 January.

Cot that makes the difference THE silence that greeted Ava Torcasio’s entrance into the world still haunts her mother Lucia three years on.

All had gone apparently smoothly during Ms Torcasio’s 40-week pregnancy.

“We had heard our baby’s heartbeat the very day before, and we felt her move that evening before we went to sleep,” Ms Torcasio said.

“Arriving at the hospital, we soon learnt that her beautiful soul had some-

how slipped away during the night.”

Ava was still-born on 23 September 2013.

“Her silence was the most haunting memory from that day, and it will stay with me forever,” her mother said.

In memory of Ava’s third birthday, a $6000 cuddle cot was crowdfunded and donated to St John God of Hospital, Berwick by Ava’s family on 16 December.

A cuddle cot is a cooling system designed for a small cot. It had allowed Ava’s family to spend a precious 24

hours with her after her birth.

In that time, a family portrait was taken with Ava and moulds of her hands and feet were made. Her fingerprints were immortalised in jewellery.

“If it weren’t for the cuddle cot, we would not have been able to spend those precious hours with our angel, and would not have had the opportunity to keep a little piece of her forever,” Ms Torcasio said.

“It’s important to us to get more people talking about still births as it’s such a taboo topic,” Ms Torcasio said.

“And it shouldn’t be.”

The fund-raising was supported by Australian non-profit group Bears Of Hope Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support .

VICTORIA Police have issued a public appeal to help find a missing 15-year-old girl.

Mahaela Martin, who was last seen on 10 December in Bentleigh, is known to frequent Narre Warren, Hastings and Springvale.

Police say they are concerned for Mahaela’s welfare due to her age.

She is described as slim build, about 160 centimetres tall with an olive complexion and long brown hair.

Tree of hope

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE inaugural Casey Cardinia Library Corporation’s (CCLC) ‘Forgiving Tree’ initiative delivered a boon for local charities in the lead up to Christmas.

In its first year ever, the initiative of the library to forgive book fines and other fees in exchange for a donation to the libraries’ ‘Forgiving Tree’ raised More than $15,000 for local charities.

Each of the libraries under the CCLC banner had a chosen local charity they partnered with to pass on the community’s donations so those less fortunate could enjoy a bountiful Christmas.

Cranbourne Library parented with the Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) who provide services and referrals to the Cranbourne community.

Leanne Petrides from CISS said she was overwhelmed with the support from the library and the community and was amazed to still be receiving donations into January.

The success of the program wasn’t the only surprise as the donations made to local charities through the Forgiving Tree were more than the fines and fees that were forgiven.

Furthermore, almost $18,000 worth of lost items were returned and just over $8000 worth of fines and fees were paid back rather than forgiven for a donation.

CEO Casey Cardinia Libraries Chris Buckingham said while the success of the initiative was a surprise, he knew the community would come together for such a program.

“We knew that setting up the Forgiving Trees in our libraries was the right thing to do,” he said.

“The heart-warming response from our wonderfully

diverse community was inspiring.”

The fervour with which the community embraced the program has delighted both library and charity staff and made a difference to many families in the Casey and Cardinia regions.

“We are very grateful to all the people and partners who gave so much throughout December,” he said.

“Together we have made a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of local families at this special time of year.”

Luck’s in for uni ground-breaker

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A LUCKY student from Korumburra has been awarded a $5000 scholarship and will be one of the first to study at Federation University’s brand new Berwick Campus.

Nicholas Mann accepted an offer from the university to study a Bachelor of Business at the campus when the doors officially open in the next few months.

Nicholas has led a colourful life in his time as school captain at Korumburra Secondary College, including reforming the school’s student representative council, playing drums in the school band and working as umpire and assistant coach of the local hockey team.

Nicholas managed to complete his Year 12 studies despite living with Dysgraphia, a disability affecting his ability to handwrite notes.

As such, this scholarship has allowed Nicholas to purchase a new laptop so his University work will be more accessible and he can enjoy his time learning.

Nicholas said the scholarship money will mean he can replace his old laptop and get on with his degree.

“My current laptop is five years old and is on its last legs,” he said.

“It was a real challenge using it during VCE. It couldn’t survive the amount of study I can expect at FedUni.” He also said the scholarship would mean a lot to him, being able to focus on his learning and not have to look for part time work to be able to get the most out of studies.

“I don’t have to stress about finding more money as I now have the means and the time to buy a computer that will cope with the demands of my studies.”

FedUni will provide 15 courses at the current Monash University Berwick Campus under a deal announced in July 2016.

FedUni will progressively move into the Berwick Campus and will take full control of the site in 2018.

Brad’s broken the ice

By Victoria Stone-Meadows NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Brad Smith from Narre Warren South had spiralled out of control after a two year chronic ice addiction.

It wasn’t until he found help from Glenn Munso and the Youth You Program based in Hallam that he has managed to get his life back under control.

“I had been smoking ice with my dad for two years straight,” Brad said.

“I don’t think we went one day without it; it was like we were stuck in a spiral and this spiral only went down and down to rock bottom for both of us.”

Brad said during his time in the grips of his addiction, he lost his sense of time, drove away his friends and family, turned to crime and lost his sense of who he was.

“It went quickly; days ticked over, it was exhausting, I was overtired and lost,” he said.

“I experienced terrible, dark, lonely times where I would steal things and sell my own property and others' property for cash to get ice.”

“I did really stupid things on the street at all times of the day, I wouldn’t sleep, wouldn’t tell the truth about anything and always lied to my family, wouldn’t spend time with anyone but myself or someone with ice.”

“My addiction got to the extent of spending over $1000 dollars a week on ice,” he said.

“If I had no money I stole and lied and would also sell my belongings, build massive debt with my dealer or get a loan, really anything for it.”

After struggling with his addiction for some time, Brad found paranoia, insomnia and psychosis was a regular part of his routine.

“The paranoia got me really bad in a lot of ways,” he said.

“I would see things and hear things and this kept me up and I would go insane

and search the house, inside and outside because I would think people are staring at me or talking about me and even people are following me.

After suffering a mental breakdown, crippling selfloathing, and realising his life had no future like this, Brad opened up to his step-mother about the addiction he had kept hidden for two years.

Brad’s step-mother gave him a phone number to call and it has been six months since Glenn Munso answered the phone and changed Brad’s life.

“We spoke for a while and I gave Glenn my long-storyshort of where I was in life at

the moment,” Brad said.

“He told me that I could come and join the Youth You Program and the first week of the program made me change.”

“I realised through the program that if I stayed committed and do what Glenn had set up for me, I have a chance to change and that chance is now.”

Brad has excelled in the Youth You Program that uses a combination of time in the gym, community engagement and mentoring sessions to help young people get off drugs.

Since joining the Youth You Program and kicking

his habit, Brad said his life is completely different and keeping with the program has been the biggest achievement of his life.

Glenn said through the Youth You Program Brad has changed completely and he has grown so much as a person.

“When he used to come into the gym, he was very anxious and would come in with a hoody on and stay in the corner and was very unsure of himself,” he said.

“He was going through detox then, but now he walks freely and has gained a lot of confidence and grown as a person; he is part of the community we have here.”

“He even raised the group standard really high because once he did that and was getting really clean, everyone matched that and he became an inspiration to others.”

Brad said he also wants to encourage other young people in his situation to seek help for their addictions.

“It’s okay to put the pipe down, speak up and ask for help,” he said.

“Nothing is impossible and there are many of us that want to help, we just need you to speak up.

Glenn Munso will be releasing his first book titled “Drugs to not discriminate” that is based around his Youth You Program later this month.

The man in his 50s received a $1.3 million leg up at the start of 2017 thanks to his luck in being one of the 23 winners of the first division draw.

Israel is the country and Jerusalem is The City of The King.

It is a very beautiful city. The farmers have lush plump crops growing in the desert, exporting around the world. We could learn from their farming techniques.

The doctors are the best, we could learn from their skills.

The city has been built in the last 60 years, we could learn how they have done it.

Planeloads of people trample the Holy City every day, we could learn from the minister for tourism.

We could learn how a people nearly annihilated by Adolf Hitler has managed to rebuild lives and overcome the horror of war and the pain it inflicts on the mind.

If Jerusalem agrees to be our sister city, we could learn a lot from them.

I think the City of Casey is right to want to be a sister city.

The smaller could learn from the mightier, Jerusalem.

On multiculturism, Denmark found it did not work.

When some migrants did not want to celebrate Christmas, refused to let seeing eye dogs in taxis and where forcing their laws and beliefs on the country.

Then Denmark said enough.

If you come to live in our beautiful country then you accept our laws and our way of life.

We will not accept yours.

Leave the old country behind and embrace the new.

I WRITE in reply to John Glazebrook (News, 15 December).

John, there are a number of very good reasons why Casey Council should develop a sister city in Israel.

There are 200 Light Horsemen buried at Mt Scopus in Jerusalem overlooking the Mount of Olives.

2017 is the 100th Anniversary of the magnificent, miraculous and victorious charge at Beersheba by the 800 Light Horsemen, which in turn led to the liberation of Jerusalem after 1300 years of brutal muslim rule.

In 1917, Australia, the youngest nation, played a very big part in the liberation of Jerusalem, one of the oldest nations (together with the Brits, Indians, our Kiwi cousins, and others).

This led (some 30 years later) to the establishment of the nation of Israel by the United Nations on 29 November 1947. This returned to the Jewish people their ancient and traditional homeland. The Arab people were also offered a nation state by the UN, but declined the offer.

The Nation State of Israel was proclaimed on 14 May 1948 and the very next day were invaded by five Arab countries. Somehow (miraculously) Israel survived.

Again in 1967 Israel pre-empted an invasion by a number of Arab nations including Egypt, Syria and Jordan, and supported by other nations as well, including Pakistan, by launching their own attack (resulting in the Six Day War) and victory for Israel. Since then Israel has suffered a number of sporadic shelling attacks over the decades.

Today Israel is the only democratic nation in that part of the world. Jews, Christians, Muslims and others all live and work there without fear of persecution - unlike all of Israel’s neighbour countries.

Modern Australia (post 1788) has always been multi-ethnic (not multi-cultural), and has been built on the British system of law and tradition which is based on Judeo/Christian precepts and from which the Australian people have benefited greatly.

It is without doubt the best country in the world to live in, as people from more than 100 different countries who have settled here readily testify.

The continuous push by the “loony left” and other God-hating groups to destroy the traditional family and its core values has a lot to answer for - in regard to family violence, drug taking, gambling, excessive alcohol, etc.

and soil dust and sawdust has been raining on us’, ‘That’s why we cough’. Is there a problem of air pollution and a health hazard to residents of O’Grady Road, Hallam? Perhaps not, it’s all imagined, that’s why nobody in the echelons of power has recognised this hazard. I appeal to the Member for Holt Anthony Byrne to investigate the complaints of the residents of O’Grady Road.

Pressure should be exercised to eliminate the causes, if any, which has resulted in the protest. In all sincerity, Casey Council ought to ensure a healthy and safe environment is prevalent in this location. It might be pertinent to ask the question, as to how, side by side, with a housing development, industry which causes such heinous pollution was allowed to co-exist.

After all who cares if a few people die of asthma related illness, or the entire atmosphere is saturated with dust which gets into the lungs and has long-term deleterious ef-

fects. Will the dwellers of this area have legal cases in later years for the damage done to their health?

A water tanker will not dampen the dust.

Only immediate action on the part of authorities who ought to take the blame, and effect remedial action. The lives of families, children, and the entire community is at stake - act now and prevent future legal action for compensation for death resulting from lung ailments.

Plan for business centre

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE City of Casey is set to become home to another thriving business centre, with property development company MAB buying almost 100 acres of land in Clyde North.

The 38-hectare plot of land on the corner of BerwickCranbourne and Thompsons Roads will be the future home of a commercial, retail and industrial precinct.

This development by MAB, owned by Melbournebased property magnates Michael and Andrew Buxton, will be the third business centre in the municipality to be developed by the company.

The new site will house a variety of retail spaces, a service station and over 70 industrial lots from 1000 square metres in size.

MAB Business Parks Director Tony Blazevic said the new development would aim to create local jobs as well as attract small business in the area.

“The development will deliver local jobs and take advantage of this unique opportunity to create a dynamic precinct in one of Australia’s fastest growing municipalities,” he said.

“The City of Casey is experiencing rapid population

growth and an expanding economy so MAB is excited to make another investment in the region,” he said.

A representative of MAB said the completion dates for the project were staggered and stage one of the build would be completed in the third quarter of 2018.

The entire project is anticipated to have a lifespan of five years before the entire business park is open and operational.

“We have acquired the site and are in preliminary design, authority negotiations and marketing stages,” the spokesperson said.

Splashdown in Casey SWIMMING pool facilities in Casey got slammed over the weekend of 7 and 8 January when temperatures in the region reached blistering figures in the high thirties.

Thousands of people flocked to swimming pools in Casey to try to beat the heat and many of the facilities were pushed to capacity due to the influx of people.

YMCA Area Manager, Matt Spencer said attendance at the pools across Casey were the highest on record.

“All three Casey pools had a combined total of 8394 through the doors,” he said.

“This is the most we’ve seen in quite a long time.”

However, some Casey residents trying to beat the heat had to be turned

away from the centres when the swimmer to lifeguard ratio at the pools reached its maximum allowance.

Between about 2pm until about 5.30pm at Casey RACE, patrons were turned away from the door and the facility managers had to implement a one-in, one-out system.

Casey ARC faced similar problems later in the day when capacity was reached at the centre at about 3.30pm.

Doveton Pool in the Park did not officially reach capacity with about 600 people attending at the busiest point of the day with more coming through the gate.

A spokesperson from the YMCA said while the facilities did not have official capacity numbers, they are under strict guidelines to maintain a safe lifeguard to patron ratio.

POLICE have released images as part of an investigation into the stabbing of a Berwick man in Noble Park in October.

The 24-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries after being stabbed several times walking to a party with four friends in Ian Street on Saturday 1 October about 4am.

The group were approached and threatened by two males, who got out of a 1998 dark-coloured Holden Commodore sedan with silver rims.

One of the males was armed with a knife.

During an altercation, the victim was stabbed to the abdomen and upper leg. He has since been released from hospital.

The attackers fled on foot along Mons Parade and drove off in the Commodore.

They were described as of African appearance and in their twenties.

Greater Dandenong CIU detectives have released an image of a man they believe can assist with their investigation.

A photo of a Commodore believed to be similar to the car involved in the attack has also been released.

Police have appealed for help from the large group of witnesses to the attack as well as for an anonymous Crime Stoppers caller, who provided information, to call them back.

Destanee in the making

By Nick Creely A STAR was born on 3 January, with 16-year-old Narre Warren tennis ace Destanee Aiava becoming the first player born this century to win a WTA main-draw match.

When the News talked to Destanee for the first time way back in 2012, the then 12-year-old spoke about the goal of becoming the “world number one”.

And now Destanee, in 2017, is turning heads with her natural flair with the racket, and her powerful build and natural poise are not going unnoticed.

In the match on 3 January, in front of a crowd exceeding 2000 people, Destanee came up against American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and downed the Olympic doubles gold medallist and revered singles player in a threeset victory 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4.

In fact, the game itself was met with some disruptions, with heavy rain the night before forcing play to be suspended.

But when she resumed, it was almost as if a switch-flicked, and from there, Australia saw the talent that has been working behind closed doors to achieve her ultimate goal - being world

number one.

Not many people watching her strut her stuff with her imposing serve would have given her much of a chance against a woman double her age, Currently ranked 387th in the world, the win was simply stunning, with many people not even knowing who the young star was.

But now they do.

Immediately after the win, Destanee spoke about the game, and the quietly spoken individual from the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne talked about the challenges of the match, and her gratitude to be in this position, all with a beaming smile across her face.

“I haven’t really looked at my phone since the end of the match, I’ve mainly just talked to my Mum, and she just said good job, and then took me to the practice court after,” she chuckled.

“I struggled a bit at the end but I got through it - a lot of things were actually going through my head, I was pretty nervous playing in front of that many people - it was the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of.

“I was a bit inconsistent through the match, but it feels pretty good to be known and supported by so many

“When I walk in its just crazy, there are people that I have seen on TV before just there and it’s crazy.”

But Destanee’s dream run came to an end the following day, going down fighting 6-4, 6-3 to world number nine Svetlana Kuznetsova, bowing out in 70

minutes.

But what’s next for the prodigious young talent?

Well she has qualified as one of seven wildcard entries for next week’s Australian Open, after winning the 2016 18/U Australian Championship, and will now become the only player born in 2000 or later to participate in

the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament.

It has taken Destanee just four years since stating she wants to become the “world number one”, to playing on one of the world’s biggest stages, so in another four years, perhaps she will be able to finally achieve her ultimate goal if not before.

Hodge said the highlight of the draft dates was the scheduling of the Pakenham Cup for early December.

“The success of the Saturday metropolitan Pakenham Cup surpassed our expectations last year and we’re thrilled that the draft date for this year’s cup is Saturday 9 December,” he said.

“It’s a massive responsibility, and a big risk for the club, but the positive feedback we’ve received really does reinforce our intentions to make it a success.”

The PRC’s first two night race meetings for the year will be huge, with the Kids Night Out to be followed by a special night meeting on Australia Day Eve, Wednesday 25 January.

THE Pakenham Racing Club will kick off the new year in style by hosting the hugely popular Cardinia Shire Kids Night Out at Racing.com Park on Thursday 19 January.

The PRC - still glowing after the enormous success of its first Saturday metropolitan-standard Pakenham Cup meeting in early December - will dedicate the night to the kids, with plenty of free activities around the course designed to keep the little ones entertained.

Meanwhile, live racing will provide plenty of excitement for the adults in the family.

PRC chief executive Michael Hodge said the Kids Night Out was the perfect way to start the year.

“It’s a terrific way to start the new year and also to kick off

our second season of Thursday night racing,” Mr Hodge said.

“Night racing really does encourage on-course attendance and, if last year is anything to go by, the kids will have a terrific night out. We will have themed nights throughout the season and look forward to strong support from the local community.”

The PRC has raced 84 times since opening day at Tynong on March 26, 2015, and that number is set to swell with a further 28 meetings scheduled for the remainder of the 2016/17 racing season.

Racing Victoria recently released its draft dates for the 2017/18 season, with Pakenham playing a key role in the fixture with 41 meetings programmed.

That number will grow with the inevitability of transferred meetings to the PRC’s synthetic

By David Nagel NEW Year’s fireworks have continued in West Gippsland cricket with some stunning individual performances reverberating around the association on Saturday.

A brilliant century from Kooweerup star Ben Spicer (108) against his former club Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc was the highlight of the top-flight Premier Division, but it was in District and Sub-District where the fuse was well and truly lit.

Cardinia Sub-District captain Brad Remy (149) took just 37 balls to rack up an amazing century against Gembrook, kicking on to his final total off just 52 balls as the Bulls registered an impressive 9/339 in 40 overs.

Remy has been in terrific form this season, with ‘starts’ of 89, 97, 50 and 90 finally turned into a big one. Brookers captain Cam Williams (127 not out) returned fire, but his 13 boundaries and three sixes saw his side fall 71 runs short of victory.

A win against Tooradin this week will see the Cobras claw their way back to within two games of the top four.

Skipper Danny Diwell has been impressed with the attitude of his side, even in the midst of their poor start to the season.

“There were never any bad attitudes within the club, everyone stayed positive and we’re just enjoying playing cricket together,” Diwell said.

“We’ve got some tough challenges ahead but we’re coming off a win, we’ve got a fair degree of confidence, and if we can reproduce our form from last week we’ll give the next two weeks (Tooradin and Kooweerup) a real shake. We’ve made life difficult for ourselves but I couldn’t be prouder of the character the boys have shown.”

In other games, Tom Hussey (59) scored his 22nd fifty in Tooradin colours, sitting proudly alongside his eight tons, as the Seagulls brushed aside Upper Beaconsfield. And at

Kooweerup, Spicer’s second century of the season led the demons to a soft victory over the struggling Yabbies.

The hard-hitting number three has now made 443 runs for the season, at an average of 88, giving the Demons a new intimidating force at the top of the order.

And finally, the move of Jason Williams (78) to the top of the order has worked out perfectly for Pakenham, the graceful right-hander showing his class in the Lions’ 60tun win over Emerald.

Lions’ skipper Dom Paynter said Williams was primed for a big innings against the Bombers.

“He had a great finish to 2016, he’s in good nick and had a good week on the track and was pretty keen to do the job,” Paynter said.

“He wanted to do it, he wanted to take on the challenge of facing the new ball and an innings like that will hold him in good stead for the rest of the season.”

The Lions travel to Cardinia this Saturday in the Round 10 blockbuster.

KOOWERUP trainer Neil ‘Bluey’ Preston and owner-driver John McGuinness have proved the old saying correct -‘patience is a virtue’ after their pacer Zipping Elmo won his first race in 30 attempts at Cranbourne on Saturday night.

The four-year-old son of Julius Caesar-Lotaliberty surprised many with his three-metre victory in the $5000 Hygain Pace (2080m) -starting at the massive odds of $61.80 on the tote.

Formerly trained by Paul Weidenbach, Zipping Elmo has shown steady improvement since switching to the Preston yard roughly four months ago, striking gold at his fourth run for the stable.

McGuinness, who has now driven Zipping Elmo at 10 of his 30 starts, said Saturday night’s victory was a tremendous thrill.

“Any race you win is a thrill, but we’ve been through a lot with this bloke so to win with him is pretty special,” McGuinness said.

“He’s really improved over the last few months and worked really well at Cranbourne on Wednesday, so we thought we were in it up to our ears. We got a slice of the good price, don’t worry about that.”

A former trainer himself, McGuinness has now retired but still sits in the sulky to drive the four horses he has in work.

Despite the horse’s poor record, McGuinness rates him highly amongst his stablemates.

“After Saturday night he’s our stable star,” the life-long harness racing participant said.

McGuinness drove Zipping Elmo a treat after drawing right behind the leader, following the speed throughout before gaining a late split courtesy of the sprint-lane to run clear of Tizeh Lucky Lady and Blue Chip Madam in the run to the line.

Zipping Elmo’s win provided a change of luck for the Lotaliberty breed, with three foals having now had 140 starts between them for just three victories.

Preston and McGuinness, veterans of the Gippsland racing circuit, will look to keep their momentum rolling over the coming weeks.

“We’ll race him at Warragul on Wednesday week (18 January) and then race him again a week later at Cranbourne,” McGuinness said.

“He’s gone up to C1 class now so we’ll be up against some other horses that have won some races.”

Local trainer Michael Hughes also had a victory at the meeting on Saturday night, with Rocknroll Gold winning the opening race on the card.

Mighty Mustang goes hard

By Ewan Kennedy UNTIL now Aussies have had to bring in secondhand Mustangs from the US of A, or perhaps some other intermediate country.

While there were some imports by Ford Australia back in the mid-'60s then again in 2001, these were overpriced and the local conversion to right-hand drive should have been visually better, though mechanically they were fine.

The Ford Mustang finally reached Australia in full factory format in 2015 and has been a huge sales success. Order one now and your chances of getting it this year are slim.

We couldn’t believe our luck when we scored a road test of a Mustang V8 GT for the two-week Christmas/New Year period. Normally we only get cars for one week, so this was a real bonus. Even better it was coloured in a brilliant red. (Thanks also to whoever crashed the one we should have been road testing for a single week a few months back …)

Mustang comes as a coupe (called Fastback by Ford) and convertible ours had the hardtop, maybe we can score an open-top one next time.

Ideally in winter when the weather is more suited to topdown motoring in our home area on the Gold Coast.

Prices start at a ridiculously low $45,990 for the Mustang EcoBoost

coupe with a manual gearbox. Ours was an auto V8, at just $59,990.

Long bonnet, short tail - styling geniuses at Ford came up with this stunning theme way back in 1964. There were some shockers in the 1970s and '80s before a return to normality in the mid-'90s. The current model, released in 2014 takes us right back to the styling genius stage.

Inside there’s a neat and simple design for instruments and controls that works beautifully.

Mustang is powered by either a 5.0-litre, twin-cam, four-valve V8 or a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine. The V8 has had many upgrades in recent years, with lessons learnt in developing the special-edition 2012 Mustang Boss 302. These let it breathe better, especially at higher revs. The result is power of 306 kW and 530 Nm of torque.

The 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol engine reaches 233 kW and 432 Nm and isn’t to be sneezed at. So far we’ve only tested it at the Ford Proving Ground and it’s both quick and nimble.

A six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters can be specified. Ours had the auto, to be honest this is probably the pick of the pair for real-life driving. Though we can understand the purists who prefer a do-it-yourself gearbox.

The 2017 Mustang has Ford’s Sync 3 system with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Ford Applink 3.0. It offers increased functionality and responsiveness compared to the system in the first MY2016 Sync 2 Mustang imports to Australia.

The high-resolution 8.0-inch colour touchscreen is clear and easy to read but it’s rather low on the central dash and may cause driver inattention for longer periods than we are comfort-

able with.

Huge tyres, big powerful Brembo brakes, well-sorted suspension and a very responsive V8 engine provide not only great driving pleasure, but also plenty of ability to stay out of trouble.

Should you, or someone else, make a big mistake then you will be pleased to know Ford Mustang has received a five-star ANCAP rating.

The V8 sounds and feels exactly the way a sporty V8 should. It’s lumpy at idle, produces a nice snarl even when you accelerate gently in traffic condi-

tions - and roars when you get onto the open road and give it a bit of stick.

Is this the most enjoyable V8 I’ve ever sat behind? Almost certainly yes okay Maseratis may sound even better than this Ford, but have a look at their price tag.

Snick the shifter down into Sport and the Mustang isn’t happy at very low speeds, surging and carrying on and a real hassle to drive in a carpark.

Which is exactly the way it should be you want sport, you get it.

Throttle response from the nonturbo engine is virtually instantaneous and the engine is happy to rev to the top of the scale, the latter a major improvement on V8s of old.

This is a big car, but it doesn’t feel like it on the road, being quick in the steering, providing reasonable feedback through the electric steering assistance and happy to hold the road at big cornering speeds.

There are really only two seats worth talking about as Mustang is a 2+2 not a full four-seater if there’s anyone other than kids in the back.

Seat support is good without being full-on sports units. They are adjustable for height, which will probably please those who are vertically challenged and intimidated by a very long bonnet.
