Rape investigation AN 18-year-old woman has allegedly been raped when walking home from a party in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to police, the woman was walking on a secluded walkway that adjoins David Low Way and Bicentennial Way in Sunrise Beach at about 2am on Sunday 8 January, when she was grabbed from behind by a man and sexually assaulted.

A local man who was passing by heard the disturbance and went to the woman’s aid. The woman was taken to Nambour Hospital following the attack.

The offender fled the scene on foot but was described as 180cm tall with a European accent, possibly French, and wearing long dark pants and a red T-shirt.

Noosa police are investigating and urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the assault and who may have heard or witnessed any suspicious activity to come forward.

POLICE are warning shop owners to be on the lookout for counterfeit money after a spate of $50 notes made their way through shops over the Christmas period.

In Peregian Beach on Monday 5 December, two women were caught trying to use a fake $50 note in a poker machine at a hotel. Quickthinking staff notified the police who arrested the women.

A counterfeit $50 note was also used at a Peregian Beach store on the same day.

This year, a customer tried to use a $50 note at a Noosaville store on Thursday 5 January at about 12.30pm. Police are using CCTV footage to try and locate the male suspect.

The next day on Friday 6 January a patron of a hotel in Tewantin tried to use a $50 note in a poker machine and a customer tried to use a $50 note at a store on St Andrew’s Drive in Tewantin.

Noosa Heads officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said retail workers and hotel staff needed to be on the lookout for the counterfeit notes.

“They feel papery and these notes won’t be accepted by teller machines or poker machines,” he said.

The Queensland Police Service also recommend to check for the Australian Coat of Arms, which should be visible when the note is held up to the light. The note should be plastic and not feel overly thick or thin. There should be a star inside a circle at the bottom of the note and when held to the light it should form a sevenpointed star.

SCIENTISTS fear the Irukandji jellyfish is getting a sensationalised rap about migrating down South toward our beaches after a spate of stings on Fraser Island recently.

RACQ LifeFlight rescued a 10th person with a suspected Irukandji jellyfish sting at Queensland’s Fraser Island since December 22.

A teenage girl was airlifted to hospital for treatment in a stable condition last week, after being stung on the leg.

Australian Marine Stinger Advisory Services director Dr Lisa-Ann Gershwin says Irukandji stings were not new to Fraser Island and had been happening for decades.

“The database shows plenty of Irukandji stings dating back to 1893 on the South East Coast. There is no invasion and not a shred of evidence to suggest Irukandji are moving south,” she said.

“The species is incredibly fragile. It is extremely tied to its habitat and the idea that they are migrating toward the Sunshine Coast over the next five years is absurd. There are no more stings recorded than any other year and, in fact, the chances of being stung are less than ever before.

“I say show me the evidence. If you have any, it should be peer-reviewed and documented,” she said.

Irukandji Syndrome is the name given to the illness which follows a sting from 16 different jellyfish species.

There were eight documented cases of suspected Irukandji syndrome on Fraser Island in both 2015 and 2014.

Dr Gershwin says not every jellyfish in Australian waters is a box jellyfish or an Irukandji and has just released a new jellyfish app in the hope it will make Australian beaches safer by reducing the number of stings and providing warnings that the animals are present in the water.

The jellyfish app contains information about swimmer safety and scientific information about jellyfish, including photos and first aid treatment.

“The idea behind this is to give people the ability to know a bit more about what they’re looking at so that they’re not afraid of every jellyfish,” she said.

An Irukandji is very difficult to see. They are the size of a thumbnail and clear with small tentacles, so most people who are stung are unable to identify the species.

No definitive treatment is currently available for the Irukandji Syndrome, however, the Australian Venom Research Unit is currently involved in research to develop an ant venom to treat Irukandji envenomation.

The symptoms of an Irukandji jellyfish sting are not immediate and may appear five to 45 minutes after the initial sting. Signs and symptoms can include severe backache or headache; shooting pains in their muscles, chest and abdomen; nausea; anxiety; restlessness; vomiting; and breathing difficulties.

Management of Irukandji jellyfish stings: Carefully remove the casualty from the water; Avoid rubbing the sting area; Immediately douse the sting area with vinegar for at least 30 seconds; If vinegar is not available, carefully remove tentacles off skin and rinse well with seawater; Call triple-zero (000) for an ambulance immediately; Regularly monitor and record the casualty’s pulse, breathing and consciousness level; and Begin resuscitation if necessary.

Food walk is tuckered out

By Jolene Ogle PLANS to hold a “food walk” along the Noosa River foreshore have been put on ice after council rejected the event application.

In a statement to the media, the Noosaville Business Association (NBA) said they had hoped to rejuvenate the foreshore precinct by holding a food-stall market along Gympie Terrace, but were disappointed by council’s rejection.

The NBA had hoped to hold a monthly Noosa River Food Walk made up of local vendors only, but council cited parking concerns and possible conflicts with existing food businesses among the reasons for refusal.

The NBA’s event application comes after the cancellation of a well-patronised food market trial in Thomas Street in 2015 that drew complaints due to market traffic taking up parking space, “outside” vendors selling food next to competing restaurants and a local trader’s takeaway service was blocked.

NBA president Jim Lloyd said the NBA were shocked by the refusal as they had developed the food walk event in direct response to the concerns raised with the Thomas Street markets.

“Ironically, the concept of the Noosa River Food Walk was developed in response to the feedback council provided about the markets and we worked very closely with council officers before submitting the application,” he said.

The Tastes of Noosaville markets on Thomas Street in 2015 were well-patronised but complaints to council led to the cancellation of the event. Now, a new event proposed by the NBA has been rejected by council.

“We took on board all suggestions made by council and felt the submitted proposal was one which council would be eager to support.”

Mr Lloyd said the group established rules that meant only local food vendors would be allowed to participate in the event that would see food-lovers walk from one stall to the next, trying an array of dishes.

In the rejection letter to the NBA, council said the similarities between the food walk and the Thomas Street

markets were “broadly noted” and while the food walk was a smaller scale, it was in a nearby location and “likely to create similar issues relating to low parking availability and objections from existing Noosaville businesses not involved in the event”.

The letter also said council didn’t agree that the foreshore needed to be rejuvenated as it is “highly activated on summer evenings” and said council planned to develop a Noosaville Foreshore Land Use Masterplan this year.

A council spokesperson said council was embarking on a consultation process to “gauge how the community would like to see the Noosa River foreshore area used”, but wouldn’t confirm whether complaints were received in regards to the NBA’s application for a marketstyle event.

The council spokesperson said discussions about better lighting and market-style events, as proposed by the NBA, would form part of the consultation, but didn’t say when

the community consultation would begin.

“It would be inappropriate for council to pre-empt this process and approve the NBA’s proposal,” the spokesperson said.

“The proposed Noosa River Food Walk’s timing, commencing during school holidays, also presents parking and traffic management challenges, which will be discussed as part of the consultation.”

Desperately seeking missing Sash THE Tindall family has been searching for their much-loved Bernese Mountain dog, Sash, since New Year's Eve. She disappeared around 9pm when the first fireworks went off and has been spotted near Dame Patti Park in Sunrise Beach and then again near the Chalet and Co Cafe, where she crossed the road and went into bushland near the toilet block at Sunrise Beach and disappeared.

Unfortunately neither vets, RSPCA or Noosa Council had any good news once they reopened last Tuesday.

Flyers put up by the family around Sunrise Beach have been taken down.

The Tindalls - Michelle, Stephen, Lilly and Poppy - have received great support from their community helping them search all the dunes and bushland from Sunshine Beach to Burgess Creek and back up into Sunrise Beach and behind the Bicentennial Hall and schools.

“We are really relying on the public to help us with any sightings and are also fearful that she may have been picked up and taken out of the area.

“Our girl Sash has recently had surgery in early December so still has a shaved area on her left hand side and is on mediation for her joints,” Michelle said.

Sash also struggles with her walking, especially if she has been out for a long time.

“We cannot thank the community near and far enough for their wonderful support in helping spread the word through social media to try to help us find our girl.

“The offers of help to look, put up posters and door knock have blown us away,” she said.

Michelle said the community support has been amazing with locals keeping an eye out for Sash and continuing the search for the much-loved pooch.

“We just want her home,” she said. “We are hoping someone has her and just don’t know how to get her home. If anyone has her they can get in touch with me and we won’t ask questions. We just want to know if she is ok, safe and sound.”

THE mystery of the Coolum crocodile continues, as the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) has not been able to identify any signs of a crocodile after a sighting was reported in Coolum Creek last Monday.

Wildlife officers from EHP responded to reports of a two metre croc at Paynter Creek seen basking on the bank on 2 January.

Teenager Alex Ranson was on his paddle ski looking for fishing spots when he spotted a crocodile about 300m downstream from the West Coolum Road boat ramp.

The 14-year-old said he saw the crocodile on the creek bank after two other men called out to alert him.

Alex said the croc slipped off the bank and into the water as the men’s boat went past.

The school boy said it was about the size of his ski.

Wildlife officers undertook a vessel-based patrol and after a daytime water-based patrol followed by a spotlight survey overnight last Thursday, they reported they did not see a crocodile.

INBRIEF Quiet on all fronts POLICE have reported the “quietest” New Year’s Eve in more than a decade, with only a handful of arrests and no major incidents.

Noosa Heads officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said it was pleasing to see large crowds that were well-behaved on Saturday 31 December.

“Crime wise, it was the quietest New Year’s Eve I have seen in my 14 years in Noosa,” he said.

“There were great crowds at the venues and fireworks, but everyone just seemed to be in a good mood and arrests were in the single figures.”

Throughout the night, seven arrests were made for incidents including public urination, minor drug offences and fighting in public.

Sen Sgt McReight is due to retire and said it was great to end his last New Year’s Eve patrol on a high note.

“It was a great way to spend my last New Year’s Eve on patrol,” he said.

Eight caught in 30 minutes

The new management committee of the Cooroy Memorial Hall Association Inc want to re-build and reopen the much-loved Cooroy Memorial Hall.

“Now council has the DOGIT and insurance (as the new trustees of the hall), we feel very happy to work with them and the community can come now and get the hall open as soon as possible.”

Mr Kluck said he believed the association’s board offered a great selection of skilled professionals who could now help form a plan to take to council and he was sure

the group would be supported by an army of volunteers who shared their vision.

Mr Kluck said the association wanted to re-build and re-open the hall and was not interested in any other options for the hall. He said fears council wanted to tear down the hall and construct a memorial park were unfounded and a waste of concern as the option was only

put forward by council staff doing their jobs by considering all options.

The group will now apply for their incorporated status. Following approval, the group will call for members to join and will release further information through the media for anyone interested in joining the Cooroy Memorial Hall Association Inc.

POLICE were disappointed to catch eight people speeding along Walter Hay Drive, Noosaville, within just 30 minutes.

From 12.30pm to 1pm on Sunday 1 January eight drivers were caught doing at least 13km over the 60km/h speed limit.

One driver was caught driving 84km in the 60km/h zone.

Sen Sgt McReight said people often used the dual lanes to pass other drivers but said speed killed and people needed to slow down and save lives.

FIFTY passionate locals met at the Cooroy Library last Wednesday night, determined to re-build and re-open the Cooroy Memorial Hall.

The group voted to become an incorporated association to be known as the Cooroy Memorial Hall Association Inc and voted for a nine-person management committee that will begin consultations with council on re-opening the closed memorial hall.

The executive committee is made up of Paul Kluck as president, former mayoral candidate Ray Kelly as vice-president, Louise Jorgenson will be the secretary and Carol Johnston will be the treasurer.

Phil McGrath will head the building sub-committee, Lyn Bayfield will lead business operations, Amy Dwyer will work on heritage protection and grant applications, Pamela Sweetapple will be in charge of all things legal and Yvonne Pattinson makes the ninth member of the board.

The association will now need to apply for their incorporated status, but the mood at the one-hour meeting was one of hope and determination.

Newly-elected president Mr Kluck said the group of passionate locals had been previously “hamstrung”, but were now excited to move forward as an incorporated body.

“Going forward we’re very excited to work with council,” he said.

MAYOR Tony Wellington is urging residents to stop feeding wildlife “inappropriate human food” with fears it may be impacting the region’s overall biodiversity.

Councillor Wellington says the best way to encourage wildlife into a yard is to grow native food plants, not by feeding animals human food that is “the equivalent of serving up a diet of junk food”.

“Feeding wildlife with inappropriate food is equivalent to creating a junk food addiction in our wildlife,” Cr Wellington said.

“Bread, cheese, sugar and processed seeds can make wild animals sick. The problem is magnified when native birds regurgitate this unsuitable food into the mouths of their growing chicks.”

Cr Wellington said even meat designed for human consumption was not good for native carnivores.

“Kookaburras, for example, require the skin and organs of whole animals, so lean meat is robbing them of essential aspects of their diet.

Many meat products like sausages also contain chemical additives and high quantities of salt, the impact of which can be pronounced in small animals,” he said.

“And of course no native animal has evolved to eat processed dairy products. Feeding cheese to butcherbirds, for example, is just plain wrong.”

“Lorikeets, for example, are not designed to eat large amounts of seed,” he said.

“They feed naturally on nectar, pollen and soft fruits.

Seeds tend to break off the fine hairs on their tongues which they need to be able to eat their proper diet. And black sunflower seeds can be lethal to all birds because of their high oil content.”

Cr Wellington said he was also concerned handfeeding wild animals would lead to their changes in the animals’ behaviour that could have devastating impacts on their health.

“Handfeeding animals could also lead to removing their innate fear of humans.

This often results in conflicts with other humans or else lethal interactions with dogs, cats and cars,” he said.

“Animals that expect to get fed by humans can also become aggressive and problematic, for both the feeders and their near neighbours.

Artificial feeding not only interferes with natural behaviours, it also shifts the relative abundance of species. For example, some species that used to seasonally migrate are now staying put near artificial food sources. And increasing the numbers of nest robbers, like kookaburras and currawongs, inevitably leads to decreasing numbers of smaller birds like wrens.”

Cr Wellington said he wants to see Noosa lead the nation in understanding the harmful impacts of wildlife feeding.

“Noosa is already recognised for its environmental responsibility. Here’s an opportunity to help cement that reputation, and everyone can take part,” he said.

FIVE people will face over 45 charges following a hit and run in Cooroy that left muchloved local Sergeant Mal Scott with leg injuries.

Police have announced that five people were charged following Operation Papa Glimpse in the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay districts.

The operation focused on a number of robbery, stealing, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and arson offences in the Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Wide Bay areas over the past weeks including the break and enter at Mitre 10 Cooroy on Monday (2 January) where Sgt Scott was struck by a vehicle.

Police will allege a man wanted for questioning in relation to the operation evaded officers in a vehicle in Gympie on the afternoon of 4 January and a number of police vehicles were damaged when officers attempted to intercept the vehicle.

The man was taken into custody at the scene and detectives executed a series of search warrants over the past 24 hours in the Gympie area which has resulted in a number of other people being taken into custody.

By Jolene Ogle THE restoration of the much-loved Tait Duke Cottage is almost complete thanks to the hard work of a group of dedicated trainees, local business and tradespeople.

The 98-year-old home was relocated to Earl Street, Tewantin, last year and since then a group of 10 trainees have helped restore the home as well as turn it into a new community hub for the Noosa Shire.

The project has been a joint initiative by Noosa Council, Hutchinson Builders, United Synergies and Noosa Heads Rotary Club, but help from over 25 businesses such as Bunnings, Kennards Hire, Dulux and Gowan Lea has been integral to the renovation’s success.

When the project was first announced, United Synergies received 40 applications for the traineeship with 10 people of different ages and backgrounds chosen to take part in the 18-week renovation project under the supervision of Scott McKenzie.

The Tradie Bunch, as they called themselves, learnt a range of new skills as they restored the home and recently eight of the trainees graduated with a Certificate I in construction.

Trainee Bailey Bosoky said the Tait Duke project proved to be an important turning point for himself and the other trainees.

“The best part of being a trainee on the Tait-Duke project has been working in such a great team with the other trainees and learning so many new on-the-job skills,” Bailey said.

“Our supervisor, Scott Mackenzie, is the best boss I have ever had

Six of the graduates have either found employment or started study since completing the traineeship, while United Synergies continues to work with the other two graduates to help develop a clear employment path.

The project is now in its final stages with plumbing, painting and floor installation among the list of

things left to do. The Tait Duke Community Cottage is expected to open in February and will serve as a meeting space for community groups as well as a base for a number of community service organisations such as the Red Cross.

Plans are already underway for stage two of the renovation with a submission for funding from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work already submitted by United Synergies.

The works would include exten-

sive landscaping to form a peaceful place for community members to gather and if the funding application is successful, it will be built by 10 new trainees.

The Tait Duke traineeships were just one part of work-skill training offered by United Synergies with the organisation also offering courses to help people aged 15-24 find work.

United Synergies education, employment and enterprise manager Sean Connelly says the organisation

holds courses for disengaged youth looking for work or training.

“We don’t say it has to be any industry or hospitality. We look at people’s individual vocational goals and their career aim then help them onto the right path to get there. It’s a great solution for parents, caregivers, local businesses needing skilled workers and for the young people,” he said.

Butterflies put 'em to work THE Sunshine Butterflies’ Our Backyard development is continuing to support the community by offering 15 trainees the chance to learn vital work skills.

The charity is taking advantage of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative by offering young people the opportunity to learn new skills and become job-ready as they help develop the Sunshine Butterflies land.

The initiative focuses on developing skills for a certificate I qualification in the building industry and site supervisor Robert Purves said he is impressed with the trainees’ enthusiasm. “In my 20 years working in the building industry, this opportunity to mentor and work so close with these amazing young people over the past three months has definitely been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had so far. They’ve all been very eager to learn and are all very excited to be able to enter the workforce with their new skills,� he said.

Sunshine Butterflies focus on helping individuals and families who are living with disability find a special place where they can feel truly included, appreciated and engaged, as well as educating the younger generation about disability, acceptance and inclusion.

The charity previously operated out of an industrial unit in Noosaville but 12 months of fund-raising helped buy the current Cooroibah property where the team is working to turn the old nursery into a hobby farm where they can offer animal therapy among their services.

Affordability and sustainability AFFORDABLE housing and sustainable living were among the top ideas in the State Government’s Housing Strategy Consultation Report.

The report will be used to help develop Queensland’s new 10-year Housing Strategy and Minister for Housing and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni said the government was focused on transforming housing in Queensland to make sure everyone has a safe, secure and affordable place to call home.

“What is clear from the consultation is no matter what people’s circumstances are or where they were from, Queenslanders want a clear plan for a secure and affordable housing future,” he said.

“People have submitted fantastic ideas on how to make housing more affordable, how to improve the sustainability of our homes and how government can help encourage new innovative types of housing to help build stronger, more connected communities.”

Twine aid for drought NOOSA Shire residents who have bought twine from the David Evans Group over the past four months have helped feed Australian farmers - and their cows - experiencing tough drought conditions.

RDA is a fast-growing, fast-moving volunteer organisation and they are looking for motivated and reliable people to assist their clients within a range of opportunities in a variety of areas.

Anyone interested in joining the team of

committed volunteers can take part in the orientation and induction sessions on Tuesday 31 January from 9am-noon.

Prospective volunteers can meet the RDA team, tour the centre and learn more about how they can help fellow community members.

By Hollie Harris FOLLOWING the recent success of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, Little Seed Theatre Company is once again preparing to wow local audiences at The J with a beautiful perfomance of ‘Puss in Boots the Panto’ by Stuart Arden.

On Thursday 12 and Friday 13 January enjoy a performance of the classic panto tradition of audience engagement, as Tom discovers that he has inherited a cat, a talking cat who then in the most debonair manner sets out to fulfil Tom’s wish to marry a princess.

His brothers Dick and Harry do little to help. Ayla Long is splendid as the Queen, a blend of Her Majesty and Jack Sparrow. Jarvis Taylor is hilarious as he plays the recently widowed dame.

Not just for ginger nuts THE annual Ginger Flower and Food Festival is back again for another year with an impressive line-up announced for the 2016 family event.

Wheel good turn by Rotary for kids PROCEEDS from the Rotary Club of Eumundi’s annual raffle will help fill the tummies of students at Cloncurry State School in Far North Queensland.

The school is located in a community still ravaged by drought and the funds from the raffle will fund the school’s breakfast program.

The Rotary Club of Eumundi president Greg Molyneux said $3000 would be donated to the school to make nutritious breakfasts available to disadvantaged students during the

2017 school year. “Breakfast clubs are a great start to the day to facilitate learning and community connections,� Mr Molyneux said. “Our thanks go to the wonderful Eumundi community - residents and visitors - for making this year’s Christmas raffle such a success, with special thanks to the local businesses and individuals who generously donated the major and six smaller hamper prizes to benefit a community recognised as disadvantaged.�

Raffle tickets were sold at several locations, with the most popular venue being the Friday Christmas night markets hosted by the Original Eumundi Markets in December. Tom Wegener of Cooroy won the major hamper wheelbarrow prize. “Eumundi Rotary wishes everyone the best for 2017 and acknowledges with thanks the community support that enables Rotary to build stronger communities locally and in locations where disadvantage impacts particularly on families,� Mr Molyneux said.

Climate of terror LIKE any responsible newspaper, Noosa Today has an obligation to express all shades of opinions, but there comes a point where some opinions are so misleading and harmful that publishing them does us all a great disservice.

I wouldn’t expect any paper to publish letters saying, for example, that acts of terror are OK because they assist with population control.

Letters denying climate change in my view are just as menacing. Urgent and immediate action is needed to reduce carbon emissions so that global suffering on an unprecedented scale can be averted. This is not an opinion but a well-established and undeniable fact, and puerile letters such as the climate scam nonsense expressed by Phillip Rutherford (Noosa Today, 5 January) do nothing but nudge us a little closer to catastrophe.

Crowded tourism NOOSA now faces a problem where tourism numbers in the major tourism precincts namely Hastings Street, Gympie Terrace and Noosa Junction will exceed the carrying capacity of these areas. The character, ambience and quality of these areas will be endangered.

The problem will become even more critical with Caloundra South 60,000 residents, the Bruce highway being duplicated from Caboolture to Caloundra and the State Government South East Queensland Plan predicting and enforcing an additional 8000 new homes in Noosa in the next 15 years. Noosa Council is now focused on and seeking answers to car numbers and parking however the tourism numbers will become far more critical.

It is imperative that a new tourism precinct be developed within Noosa to siphon tourism away from the current overloaded tourism precincts.

A bold plan would be to develop a major attraction such as a “wet and wild park" south of the current Noosa Civic Centre.

The park would be supported with streetscaping, shopping retail, parking and equal to current tourism precincts. While tourists are at the new precinct they are not at and overloading the current Noosa tourism precincts.

Such a plan will no doubt be not acceptable to some, however the inaction to address the tourism overload will see our major current tourism precincts become destroyed, intolerable and ugly.

Short memory I MAY be in my seventies but have a good memory. In the late '70s when there was just one six-car paying ferry across the Noosa River owners tried to get permission from council to build a second ferry only to be used in busy times and when the ferry was ‘out of the river’

for a week or two in February for annual survey (meant no access to properties over that side).

It was advised then that council was happy to keep it at just one six-vehicle ferry so the numbers using North Shore/Cooloola were totally limited. Those were the days when such wonderful people did such good work protecting that area and Fraser Island - they were even able to stop a hotel being built on the North Shore then. Of course, now money involved, all that is forgotten!

I can clearly remember when Kate Jones, then Labor Government, bought in the permit system and her saying all monies would be used in the areas on things such as increased rangers, rubbish bins, toilets, improvement to access to and from beaches, etc and nothing has been done since so think of all that money that has gone into general revenue.

Also with Noosa Council, they get $1 from every vehicle going each way cross the ferry - nothing done so that too goes into general revenue. I often wonder why, as most of the vehicles just go through the Noosa Shire and into the Cooloola Shire - Gympie Council doesn’t get half of that $1?

All locals would love ‘reductions in tourist

numbers everywhere’ so a cap on tourist numbers ... but council/government will never do that as they are just giving up ‘free’ money. Just imagine them looking at the queues at the ferrys, accesses and the bumper to bumper traffic on the beach ... they are rubbing their hands together in glee adding up what they get from the money on each vehicle and the daily weekly yearly permit money! (State Government/Noosa Council the same). Oh ‘yes’ State Government pat themselves on their backs for putting police over there at holiday time - we’re not dumb ... just more money for ‘general revenue’!

Hate to say this, but now our family had to sell our family's Teewah property after 54 years (the last original family from the first auction of 24 blocks at Teewah in 1962) because of the cost to have it up there (rates and so on). I can look at it totally as an ‘outsider’ as I’ll never go up there again.

With the new ferry lease contract coming up in two plus years ... might as well tender for a toll bridge and just make it ‘open slather’ ... council/government will still get their money from ‘bridge tolls’ (do away with permits) ... and the numbers probably won’t be much more than are there now ... and ratepayers on that side won’t have the dreaded ‘holiday time blues’ when they can’t go anywhere for weeks - without any reduction of their rates.

IT WAS the type of Christmas break that both lifeguards and lifesavers like to report.

No fatalities on our beaches - big crowds moderate surf and great weather.

With beaches packed it also resulted in good business for both the Noosa and Sunshine Beach Supporter Clubs.

Both supporter club managers, Anton Mogg of Noosa and Tim Johnson of Sunshine Beach, have expressed their thanks to all our visitors for their support of their respective clubs.

“This is great,” said Anton, “all funds go to providing state of the art equipment that is essential to maintain our high standard of beach safety. If we lose the reputation of being safe family beaches, crowds drop off and the whole town suffers.’’

Regarding that ever-present problem of membership, on Boxing Day on Main Beach, the Noosa club, in conjunction with F45 Fitness Centre, conducted a beach fitness circuit for lifesavers and F45 members.

Attended by some 50 members, it was a great success.

“The idea was to encourage new members into surf club life by letting them see the fitness benefits that go with being a lifesaver," Noosa spokesman Donald McKill said.

"We cannot emphasise enough the need for new members and to publically demonstrate training techniques, is a great way to get them thinking of a career in lifesav-

ing - a big thank you to F45 for being a major part of this promotion.”

With voluntary roving patrols and 24hour callout teams now becoming a vital part of surf club life at Noosa, maintaining a high membership is of the utmost importance.

On two occasions during the Christmas break our ERG, (Emergency Response Group that respond to callouts outside patrol hours) were needed when people boating, found themselves in trouble in and around the river mouth.

Again a tragedy was avoided because of the incredibly fast Response Time of the IRB teams.

Proud to say that this factor has not gone unnoticed by the local police and the team has been commended.

However we again stress that this will not always be the case, as a time will come when the ERG team will already be on another rescue mission; and this is when a tragedy will occur.

So rule number one: Don’t take these teams for granted and, two: When boating check and double check gear, equipment and talk to the Coast Guard.

Always remember 'When in Doubt Don’t go Out'.

In surf club competition, Noosa had good news prior to Christmas when it was announced that Lana Rogers and Cooper Williams were selected for the Queensland Team.

This team - known as the Cyclones - is just reward for hard work.

Then to top it off, Noosa's head coach Darren Mercer was named as the Queensland Coach.

Last weekend the fifth round of the Summer of Surf Ironman Competition was held at North Wollongong and for the Noosa club it was definitely a day to remember.

In the final overall placings in the Ironwoman Event, Noosa rising star Lana Rogers finished in third place, an outstanding performance.

Interesting to note that in the three top placings only two points separated the place-getters.

In the Under 17 division, Riley Dixon finished first in the Ironwoman, second in the Board Race and third in the Board Relay.

In the men's division, Cooper Williams finished first in the Ironman and second in the Board Relay. But most amazing of all, this Under 17 young man finished in the top ten in the men's Open Division.

Well done to all.

By Jack Mangrove WITH the warm summer evenings, the river is a great place to be to claim some quality fish.

Up river the jacks have been feeding with ferocity, live bait is one of the most productive, team this with the late afternoon, early evening and a run out tide and your chances of seeing a red devil are high.

If flicking lures is your thing, there are some new lures on the market that are really firing them up.

The Rapala slow rising Shadow Rap Jerkbaits have accounted for some quality fish, as the name suggests these lures are very slow to rise so when you crank them down they will stay in the strike zone longer.

Prawnstars are also popular at the moment, they have a very natural gliding action as it sinks.

The trick is to allow plenty of time for the lure to glide down and then give it a couple of short sharp flicks to get the tail flicking, this is best achieved with a slightly stiffer tip rod.

Down river, Woods Bay and the back of the Sound, small soft plastics and blades have been the go when chasing trevally through the day, with poppers and surface walkers producing in the low light periods.

Flathead are in great numbers in the lower section of the river and have been feeding on small fish baits like hardy heads, frog mouthed pilchards and whitebait, fishing the run out tide seems to be the most productive.

Whiting have also been in good numbers and have been feeding on yabbies and worms and pealed prawns, with the dog beach and Gympie Terrace always a good fish for the family.

Offshore, Sunshine Reef has really fired up over the last week or so with mixed bags of sweetlip, coral trout, tuskies and squire.

Shimano Colt Sniper micro jigs have been a standout on the trout and sweetlip as they mimic an injured bait fish as they flutter down. North and Chardon’s Reefs have seen some good size dolphin fish (mahi mahi) being caught, with spanish and spotted mackerel hitting slow trolled dead baits on a chin guard.

Chin guards are great they help to keep the bait from spinning and give it a realistic look.

Those that have made the trip up to the Reef off Double Island and out to the Barwon Banks have been well rewarded with dolphin fish, cod, coral trout, cobia, pearl perch and snapper.

On the beaches, whiting have been in most of the close gutter on the incoming tide,

Bailey Kane with a nice golden trevally. freshly pulled live worms have been the pick of the baits with pippies also working well.

On the southern beaches around Peregian, good school of whiting were targeted with angler bagging out on legal fish.

Dart are pretty much everywhere and it can take a bit to get a bait past them.

Jewies and large tailor and also on the cards at night at the moment, large flesh bait like bonito and mullet have claimed some cracker fish.

A bridge not far enough Life of

I KNOW that sometimes in Noosa we throw our hands in the air in exasperation at council decisions on land use and bizarre zonings and the like, but for the most part there is some kind of logic in play. And, in terms of the bigger picture, our town planning has, for decades now, been world’s best practice.

This week’s column comes to you from a village a few thousand kilometres north west of Noosa where such is not the case, a place where planning is a concept whose time is yet to come, where land zoning is a form of currency, where roads are opened and closed and allowed to rot at the whims of feuding landlords, where there are dozens of sturdy concrete bridges that lead nowhere.

The urban sprawl along Bali’s south west coast has been heading north at the rate of about a couple of hundred rice paddies a year for more than 30 years, but the village where we have been staying a couple of times a year for nearly a decade now has been the developers’ stumbling block, separated from its neighbour villages by fast-flowing creeks and rivers, and bordered by a government-gazetted “green corridor” that runs inland from the coast to the outskirts of the city of Tabanan, through some of South Bali’s most pleasant agricultural landscapes.

The green corridor was compromised almost from the start, with Bali’s trickle-down management of assets guaranteeing that money would change hands and buildings would pop up in fields of green.

But even now, we can ride our pushbikes 10 minutes from the compound and be surrounded by terrain not dissimilar to the island of the gods I fell in love with 43 years ago, where the tinkle of cowbells and the laughter of children can be heard rather than the now standard soundtrack of jackhammers and doof-doof.

Still, every visit we monitor the level of construction in our neighbourhood and wonder how long it can last. And every visit we have to re-examine our priorities.

From where we live, I have several easy options for my morning surf.

I can putter on my scooter two minutes to the end of the beach road where there are two good lefts and a

French surfers brave freezing waters to paddle out for a mate.

Bridge to nowhere in Bali.

On a lower tide and a bigger swell, I can ride the scooter five minutes in the other direction, across a bridge and along a winding coastal route to two more reef and sand Aframes that will hold up to double overhead, which is quite enough for an old bloke, on any tide.

For the past few years landholders on the southern side of the bridge have been playing silly buggers with public access, illegally blocking off one track after another, but the local surfing community has always found a way around these obstacles. Until now.

On my first morning back last week I rode across the bridge at first light, down the temple track and into an impenetrable brick wall.

I rode its length twice but there was no way around.

minutes along the beach for my surf.

No big deal, I suppose, but a 40-minute round trip carrying a longboard isn’t particularly my idea of fun.

It’s like walking from First Point to Granite and back, every day.

There is another way, but it involves doing a huge loop on major roads, which is also not my idea of fun.

Conversely, my inconvenience is slowing the degeneration of the village I love into another Kuta or Seminyak.

There are no nightclubs here, and without coastal access there won’t be for some time. Maybe never.

In the meantime, I’m looking for a secret bridge. This might sound silly, but I’ve already found two.

The problem is that neither of them go anywhere.

Vale Murph le Surf JUST before the silly season began in earnest we had word from France of the passing of our dear friend Francois Lartigau, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Francois, known to many around the world as “Murph the Surf”, and to others as “Fritz”, was one of French surfing’s most colourful characters, a fine artist, clothing designer, raconteur and bon vivant, as well as having a national title under his belt.

Murph and his older brother JeanMarie grew up in Biarritz in the 1960s and had a virtual stranglehold on French surfing in the latter part of that decade, Jean-Marie winning the

senior titles, Murph the juniors.

Murph went travelling in the early ‘70s so I missed him when I spent the summer of ’73 on the Basque Coast, but I caught up with him at Burleigh Heads during the famous 23-day swell of 1975, and we have been friends ever since.

In the early 2000s, Murph and I worked together at Quiksilver Europe, surfed Guethary or Bidart at lunchtime most days, and raised merry hell together in the beachfront bars.

When I turned 50 he presented me with a large, very clever and cheerfully obscene rendition of me as a crusty dinosaur. I still have it and will cherish it forever.

A couple of nights before he died, Murph and I traded goodbye texts.

He’d made his peace and was ready to go surf those perfect lefts on the other side. Another good man down.

Go on girls, give it a 'tri'

By Jolene Ogle THE Noosa Triathlon is the region’s biggest sporting event and a new female-only training initiative is hoping to get women out from the spectator stand and into the race.

The initiative is the brainchild of the Noosa Tri Club and has been made possible through funding aimed at promoting female participation in triathlon events.

Noosa Tri Club president Tim Rook said he noticed women new to a sport may feel intimidated when training in a mixed environment.

“Because of this, we wanted to create a female-only environment where sessions are led by a professional female coach,” he said.

“We are hoping this will prompt women to come and try having seen the Noosa Triathlon and been inspired by that.”

The Noosa Tri Club will hold training sessions that fit around work and school dropoff commitments to hopefully allow mums to get time for themselves during school hours where they can meet like-minded women.

“We want the sessions to be fun as well as challenging,” he said. “We will cater for novices, we have several female members who didn’t get into the sport until well into their 40s and 50s so we hope any female with or without a sporting background will want to take part.”

Noosa-based coach Jess Fleming will lead female-only training classes for those wanting to learn more about competing in triathlons.

and family life with health and fitness, but event organisers are hoping to help other women achieve a healthy balance through the initiative.

“After a long time in the sport and the last three years as a professional, I feel it’s time to ‘give back’ to other ladies out there that want to get into triathlon,” she said.

“I want to prove to women out there that it isn’t as scary as it seems and anyone can get involved. I haven’t forgotten where I started when I first came into triathlon as a complete non-swimmer and never having ridden a bike competitively. But, I was able to progress and have fun at the same time right up to a professional level.”

Jess has previously conducted two female-only courses through her coaching company Multisportconsultants with fantastic outcomes.

“The girls I brought to-

gether now meet regularly to swim bike and run, they found a new sport, courage to do so and friends along the way,” she said.

The Noosa Triathlon Club will host an open morning on Sunday 29 January at the Noosa Lions Park in Noosa Heads.

All women are welcome to head along and find out more about the free personalised, eight-week training plans.

The female-only classes will be led by Jess at various times of the day and there will also be a female-only, twoday triathlon training camp in June.

Great surf packs a crowd Surf’s Up HOLLIE HARRIS

WITH a few good sets coming through Noosa points over the weekend, locals and visitors had to learn the art of sharing or miss out.

Sunday was the best day for surf with near perfect conditions along the points.

counted 115 surfers at Tea Tree Bay alone.

Julian Wilson was among the crowd and collisions were hard and constant.

The waves dwindled to a measly one foot by Monday, but the crowds were patient.

Little Cove offered the better selection of rides early in the day.

With not much around earlier in the week, many were heading down to Burleigh and the Pass for the best surf.

It was reported on Swell-

net.com that it was pure mayhem at the Pass with the daily injury toll ridiculously high and the car parking even more infuriating than the crowds.

As the wind turns Northerly and the swell drops off, it's looking pretty average around here for the next few days with inconsistent NE’ly swell of 2-3ft around on the open beaches at best.

Things are still looking good in the coming weeks with some promising developments in the Coral Sea ahead, and so we wait!

Nippers spring into action The Noosa Heads Nippers Team had a fun and enjoyable 8-10 years Junior SLS Carnival recently held at Redcliffe.

The kids were ready to spring into action, so were the water safety parent volunteers, especially Andy Hunt (pictured at the back); he was on fire for his first ever carnival! Andy really enjoyed himself and was proud of how Noosa Nippers showed lots of team spirit and gave 100 per cent in all events. Well done to the Noosa Nippers and to all our valued parent volunteers.
