IT’S sad to say that Andrew Hartley and his family were far from unique after their home was invaded in 2016.

What was unique was how Mr Hartley responded, fronting and organising a community crime prevention event in Sweeney Reserve less than a month later.

Mr Hartley, who is Star News’s Person of the Year, became a symbol of residents’ defiance against a steeply rising wave of serious crime.

The event, which drew 400 residents as well as MPs, police, Neighbourhood Watch members and experts on alarms, security doors and self-defence, was about informing households how to keep safe. “People aren’t aware of the extent of these crimes. It has become an epidemic and we don’t think it will happen to us,� Mr Hartley said. “Pay attention to what’s happening at your neighbour’s house as well as our own security.�

When Mr Hartley launched the event, he wanted to avoid politics.

But crime had soared 15 per cent per capita in Casey in 2016, it became the talk of the town and it got decidedly political.

At the same time, Casey Council mayor Sam Aziz trumpeted a fivepoint law-and-order advocacy plan declaring his city was in “crisis�.

Some of the council’s pleas - including for more police in Casey were heeded by the state government.

Meanwhile, crime-reporting Facebook pages ramped up perceived danger levels.

Many Casey suburbs had their own page. They became a hub for CCTV footage of strange cars outside homes, photos of stolen cars and law-and-or-

On that night, Mr Hartley was woken by the family dog. He ran out the front and saw a carload of youths drive away.

An hour later, police found his wife’s handbag and car keys in the backyard - and only then it dawned that burglars had got inside the house.

It was thought the intruders took off their shoes, walked through the rear unlocked door of the home garage, and jemmied an interior door to get inside.

Gallingly, they must have walked past the sleeping Hartley children.

The family’s innocence hasn’t been repaired, even after a therapeutic threeweek holiday in Bali and installing robust home security. “I’ve got the cameras, the alarms.

It’s not only about the deterrence but making sure the family feels more comfortable,� Mr Hartley said. “We still want to move away.�

Mr Hartley says there isn’t any one solution for the lawlessness, particularly by a certain cohort of youths. “It’s just a fact of life in the current environment. “All we can do is secure ourselves and look after our loved ones as best we can.�

He hopes the event inspired others to look out for each other and “get back a sense of that community�. “Let’s now throw it over to the council and other organisations to run that event on a regular basis. “I showed that one person can run this on their own ... but it’s time for me to go back in my box.�

Rates push on

By Cam Lucadou-Wells CASEY councillors have provisionally endorsed a push towards raising rates above the two per cent rate cap this year.

At a 20 December meeting, a majority of councillors endorsed a statement that the State Government-imposed cap would lead to a shortfall in council services and infrastructure.

They supported council officers continuing to plan for a possible submission for a rates cap variation.

Mayor Sam Aziz said no formal decision had been made on whether the council would apply for a variation.

“However the government’s announcement that rate rises will be capped at two per cent leaves us few options if we are to maintain the current level of services and infrastructure.

“We are facing a cumulative black-hole of around $200 million over the decade to 2025.”

At the meeting, Crs Geoff Ablett, Steve Beardon, Rex Flannery and Tim Jackson dissented.

“The previous council spent a significant amount of money on a submission for a rate rise exemption last year and it was knocked back,” Cr Jackson said.

“I suspect it will be knocked back again.”

Cr Jackson said he expected Casey’s soon-to-be-convened People’s Panel of 60 residents would also dismiss the need for a higher rates rise - even after being briefed by the council on its budget constraints.

“I’ve been educated on the issue by the council too but I haven’t

changed my mind.

“You shouldn’t be holding the residents to ransom and say if you don’t support a rates rise, these are the things you’re not going to get.”

Cr Jackson said revenue could be alternatively raised by asset sales or loans.

“I think the difficulty for residents is the council has been spruiking that the $125 million Bunjil Place will not cost you anything.

“At the same time, it says it needs to increase rates over the cap to afford to do things.”

Meanwhile, Cr Beardon refuted the claim that dissenting councillors were taking the “easy way out”.

He said it would have been easier to go with the flow and vote with the majority of councillors.

“I think people are already paying enough.

“Until we are seeing a major

improvement in what they’re getting (from Casey), I won’t be asking them to pay more.”

The rates cap has lowered from the 2.5 per cent cap in 2016, in which Casey Council made a failed bid for an exemption from the Essential Services Commission.

Local government peak bodies have also been critical of the cap which matches CPI but is lower than the 2.15 per cent cap recommended by the ESC. Municipal Association of Victoria interim president Coral Ross accused the State Government of “double standards” for raising property taxes by 5.2 per cent and employee expenses by 7.8 per cent.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said the rate cap had ended a decade average of six per cent rate rises and made things “fairer” for ratepayers.

Casey looks to a panel of people

By Victoria Stone-Meadows TARGETED residences from across the Casey municipality will receive letters from the mayor in the coming weeks inviting them to apply to be on a people’s panel.

Casey Council is establishing the people’s panel to allow the community to directly inform the direction of infrastructure and community spending over the next four years.

The panel will be made up of 60 residents from the City of Casey, selected by an independent consulting company, to give a representative cross-section of the community.

The panel will meet four times in March and be presented with budgetary and cost balancing problems to solve that will inform council on what the community wants prioritised.

While the recommendations and decisions put forward by the panel will be presented to councillors for consideration, the panel’s recommendations are not binding on council decisions.

Mayfield ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon said the people’s panel would be a positive way for council to stay better connected to the community’s needs.

“I think it’s a great thing and I think it’s important we consult with the community and have good strong voices to give us that feedback,” she said.

“To some extent council is a people’s panel already, so this is an extension of that.”

Cr Stapledon also said the panel would allow people to understand council processes better and dispel some of the misunderstandings about council.

“The panel will allow people to feel more engaged and understand why things are done a certain way, and realise how they can help get things achieved.”

However, while Cr Steve Beardon agreed that council was already a people’s panel, he saw this initiative as an unnecessary extra.

“They have 11 people representing the people of Casey already called council-

lors,” he said.

“I think consultation is good idea when it is done broadly by elected councillors and I’m more than happy to doorknock 100 houses and by 50 we would have the answers this panel will give.”

Cr Beardon believes the new people’s panel is an expense to the people of Casey that could be put to better use.

“The number of parks and playgrounds in Cranbourne alone that could benefit from the kind of investment immediately is huge; as well as graffiti removal, home and community care services etc.

“The questions aren’t going to be as I would put them; just asking residents what they are prepared to give up to remain in the rate cap is a skewed way to put it to people.

“I would rather we just ask people what they need and if they can afford a rate rise or if we can work harder to achieve goals within the current budget; people want us to work harder and smarter.”

Council have engaged the services of Capire Consulting Group for an undisclosed amount to help select the panel and ensure all facets of the community are represented.

Council has confirmed the data used to benchmark this cross-section will be a combination of Census data from 2011 and their own council records.

“Our city is one of Victoria’s fastest growing and council needs to ensure it is meeting community needs and expectations within the tough financial environment caused by State Government imposed rate capping,” Casey Mayor Cr Aziz said.

“Council and the community will have to make some tough choices about the level of services and infrastructure it wants.”

Members of the people’s panel will be reimbursed $320 per person, a total of $19,200, for their involvement at the conclusion of the project.

“I realised through the program that if I stayed committed and do what Glenn had set up for me, I have a chance to change and that chance is now.”

Brad has excelled in the Youth You Program that uses a combination of time in the gym, community engagement and mentoring sessions to help young people get off drugs.

Since joining the Youth You Program and kicking his habit, Brad said his life is completely different and keeping with the program has been the biggest achievement of his life.

“When he used to come into the gym, he was very anxious and would come in with a hoody on and stay in the corner and was very unsure of himself,” he said.

“He even raised the group standard really high because once he did that and was getting really clean, everyone matched that and he became an inspiration to others.”

NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Brad Smith from Narre Warren South had spiralled out of control after a two year chronic ice addiction.

It wasn’t until he found help from Glenn Munso and the Youth You Program based in Hallam that he has managed to get his life back under control.

“I had been smoking ice with my dad for two years straight,” Brad said.

“I don’t think we went one day without it; it was like we were stuck in a spiral and this spiral only went down and down to rock bottom for both of us.”

Brad said during his time in the grips of his addiction, he lost his sense of time, drove away his friends and family, turned to crime and lost his sense of who he was.

“It went quickly; days ticked over, it was exhausting, I was overtired and lost,” he said.

“I experienced terrible, dark, lonely times where I would steal things and sell my own property and others' property for cash to get ice.”

“I did really stupid things on the street at all times of the day, I wouldn’t sleep, wouldn’t tell the truth about anything and always lied to my family, wouldn’t spend time with anyone but myself or someone with ice.”

Brad found himself not speaking to his family, with no friends left, and only caring about where he was going to get his next hit from.

“My addiction got to the extent of spending over $1000 dollars a week on ice,” he said.

“If I had no money I stole and lied and would also sell my belongings, build massive debt with my dealer or get a loan, really anything for it.”

After struggling with his addiction for some time, Brad found paranoia, insomnia and psychosis was a regular part of his routine.

“The paranoia got me really bad in a lot of ways,” he said.

“I would see things and hear things and this kept me up and I would go insane and search the house, inside and outside because I would think people are staring at me or talking about me and even people are following me.

After suffering a mental breakdown, crippling self-loathing, and realising his life had no future like this, Brad opened up to his step-mother about the addiction he had kept hidden for two years.

Brad’s step-mother gave him a phone number to call and it has been six months since Glenn Munso answered the phone and changed Brad’s life.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the program filled a long-standing gap in state cultural funding.

CASEY Council’s Bunjil Place has been granted $100,000 in state funding to attract major arts groups such as The Australian Ballet.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the Creative Suburbs funds would help deliver one of the main aims of the under-construction arts and civic centre - to boost arts participation in the region.

As part of the council’s submission, the arts groups will possibly engage with the community in a series of workshops and then perform the works at Bunjil Place.

Possible collaborations included The Australian Ballet’s dance education ensemble working with 500 local students, or a drama project that will share the stories of Casey residents.

Casey councillor and arts spokesman Wayne Smith said the initiative showed the potential opportunities created by Bunjil Place.

MORE than $60,000 worth of heroin as well as knives, casino chips and cash have been allegedly seized by police from a car parked outside a Hallam hotel.

Operations Response Unit police responded to reports that two men appeared to be trying to steal the car in the Princes Highway hotel’s car park just after midnight on 4 January.

Police say a “large chunk of a tar-like substance” believed to be heroin was found on the car’s floor.

Three knives, cash, about $1200 of casino chips and a large amount of suspectedly stolen cigarettes were also found in the car.

A 39-year-old Cremorne man was arrested at the scene and charged with trafficking a commercial quantity and possessing a drug of dependence.

He was remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 5 January.

THE discovery of an allegedly stolen vehicle in Pearcedale in the early hours of Friday 6 January has led to the arrest of a 24-year-old man.

Cranbourne police made the discovery after pulling over a vehicle with false number plates in a car park off Baxter-Tooradin Road at about 1.15am.

Upon speaking to the driver, police allegedly discovered a quantity of drugs including methamphetamines and cannabis, as well as stolen registration plates and two knives.

The young man is believed to have been charged with drugs and weapons related offences and appeared in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the same day.

I WRITE regarding the letter from John Glazebrook on Israel and multiculturism.

Israel is the country and Jerusalem is The City of The King.

It is a very beautiful city. The farmers have lush plump crops growing in the desert, exporting around the world. We could learn from their farming techniques.

The doctors are the best, we could learn from their skills.

The city has been built in the last 60 years, we could learn how they have done it.

Planeloads of people trample the Holy City every day, we could learn from the minister for tourism.

We could learn how a people nearly annihilated by Adolf Hitler has managed to rebuild lives and overcome the horror of war and the pain it inflicts on the mind.

If Jerusalem agrees to be our sister city, we could learn a lot from them.

I think the City of Casey is right to want to be a sister city.

The smaller could learn from the mightier, Jerusalem.

On multiculturism, Denmark found it did not work.

When some migrants did not want to celebrate Christmas, refused to let seeing eye dogs in taxis and where forcing their laws and beliefs on the country.

Then Denmark said enough.

If you come to live in our beautiful country then you accept our laws and our way of life.

We will not accept yours.

Leave the old country behind and embrace the new.

I WRITE in reply to John Glazebrook (News, 15 December).

John, there are a number of very good reasons why Casey Council should develop a sister city in Israel.

There are 200 Light Horsemen buried at Mt Scopus in Jerusalem overlooking the Mount of Olives.

2017 is the 100th Anniversary of the magnificent, miraculous and victorious charge at Beersheba by the 800 Light Horsemen, which in turn led to the liberation of Jerusalem after 1300 years of brutal muslim rule.

In 1917, Australia, the youngest nation, played a very big part in the liberation of Jerusalem, one of the oldest nations (together with the Brits, Indians, our Kiwi cousins, and others).

This led (some 30 years later) to the establishment of the nation of Israel by the United Nations on 29 November 1947. This returned to the Jewish people their ancient and traditional homeland. The Arab people were also offered a nation state by the UN, but declined the offer.

The Nation State of Israel was proclaimed on 14 May 1948 and the very next day were invaded by five Arab countries. Somehow (miraculously) Israel survived.

Again in 1967 Israel pre-empted an invasion by a number of Arab nations including Egypt, Syria and Jordan, and supported by other nations as well, including Pakistan, by launching their own attack (resulting in the Six Day War) and victory for Israel. Since then Israel has suffered a number of sporadic shelling attacks over the decades.

Today Israel is the only democratic nation in that part of the world. Jews, Christians, Muslims and others all live and work there without fear of persecution - unlike all of Israel’s neighbour countries.

Modern Australia (post 1788) has always been multi-ethnic (not multi-cultural), and has been built on the British system of law and tradition which is based on Judeo/Christian precepts and from which the Australian people have benefited greatly.

It is without doubt the best country in the world to live in, as people from more than 100 different countries who have settled here readily testify.

The continuous push by the “loony left” and other God-hating groups to destroy the traditional family and its core values has a lot to answer for - in regard to family violence, drug taking, gambling, excessive alcohol, etc.

and soil dust and sawdust has been raining on us’, ‘That’s why we cough’. Is there a problem of air pollution and a health hazard to residents of O’Grady Road, Hallam? Perhaps not, it’s all imagined, that’s why nobody in the echelons of power has recognised this hazard. I appeal to the Member for Holt Anthony Byrne to investigate the complaints of the residents of O’Grady Road.

Pressure should be exercised to eliminate the causes, if any, which has resulted in the protest. In all sincerity, Casey Council ought to ensure a healthy and safe environment is prevalent in this location. It might be pertinent to ask the question, as to how, side by side, with a housing development, industry which causes such heinous pollution was allowed to co-exist.

After all who cares if a few people die of asthma related illness, or the entire atmosphere is saturated with dust which gets into the lungs and has long-term deleterious ef-

fects. Will the dwellers of this area have legal cases in later years for the damage done to their health?

A water tanker will not dampen the dust.

Only immediate action on the part of authorities who ought to take the blame, and effect remedial action. The lives of families, children, and the entire community is at stake - act now and prevent future legal action for compensation for death resulting from lung ailments.

Plan for business centre

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE City of Casey is set to become home to another thriving business centre, with property development company MAB buying almost 100 acres of land in Clyde North.

The 38-hectare plot of land on the corner of BerwickCranbourne and Thompsons Roads will be the future home of a commercial, retail and industrial precinct.

This development by MAB, owned by Melbournebased property magnates Michael and Andrew Buxton, will be the third business centre in the municipality to be developed by the company.

The new site will house a variety of retail spaces, a service station and over 70 industrial lots from 1000 square metres in size.

MAB Business Parks Director Tony Blazevic said the new development would aim to create local jobs as well as attract small business in the area.

“The development will deliver local jobs and take advantage of this unique opportunity to create a dynamic precinct in one of Australia’s fastest growing municipalities,” he said.

“The City of Casey is experiencing rapid population

growth and an expanding economy so MAB is excited to make another investment in the region,” he said.

A representative of MAB said the completion dates for the project were staggered and stage one of the build would be completed in the third quarter of 2018.

The entire project is anticipated to have a lifespan of five years before the entire business park is open and operational.

“We have acquired the site and are in preliminary design, authority negotiations and marketing stages,” the spokesperson said.

Splashdown in Casey SWIMMING pool facilities in Casey got slammed over the weekend of 7 and 8 January when temperatures in the region reached blistering figures in the high thirties.

Thousands of people flocked to swimming pools in Casey to try to beat the heat and many of the facilities were pushed to capacity due to the influx of people.

YMCA Area Manager, Matt Spencer said attendance at the pools across Casey were the highest on record.

“All three Casey pools had a combined total of 8394 through the doors,” he said.

“This is the most we’ve seen in quite a long time.”

However, some Casey residents trying to beat the heat had to be turned

away from the centres when the swimmer to lifeguard ratio at the pools reached its maximum allowance.

Between about 2pm until about 5.30pm at Casey RACE, patrons were turned away from the door and the facility managers had to implement a one-in, one-out system.

Casey ARC faced similar problems later in the day when capacity was reached at the centre at about 3.30pm.

Doveton Pool in the Park did not officially reach capacity with about 600 people attending at the busiest point of the day with more coming through the gate.

A spokesperson from the YMCA said while the facilities did not have official capacity numbers, they are under strict guidelines to maintain a safe lifeguard to patron ratio.

Dog of a day

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THIS year saw two properties searched by council officers, the RSPCA, and animal rights activists in the Blind Bight and Pearcedale areas.

April 2016 bought us the terrible the story of 29 dogs that were found to have been mistreated at a Blind Bight property.

The story lasted for months as the property owner attended court but avoided a conviction, while council seized 29 of the dogs in a raid during July.

Casey Council and the RSPCA found 10 dogs were illegally tethered on leads less than three metres long.

The story received attention from many political players, online activists and the wider Casey community.

There was even a change.org petition set up by Ben Wild of the Animal Justice Party asking Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, to “save the Blind Bight dogs before it’s too late.”

Some 15,862 supporters signed the petition and Twitter wasn’t far behind, with relentless campaigning online.

The news came through in December that many of the dogs taken from the property had been permanently rehomed or were in caring foster homes.

Sadly, two of the dogs removed from the property had to be euthanised due to extreme behavioural issues and one was sent to NSW for behavioural rehabilitation.

It was in November that the News reported 19 dogs had been seized from a different property in Pearcedale.

While the two incidents seem to be unrelated, they share similarities in both times the dogs were seized under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. It will remain to be seen in 2017 what comes from the 19 dogs removed from the property in Pearcedale.

A year of historic tumult

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE historic Hampton Park School house had a tumultuous year in 2016, where it looked like it might be knocked down before being resurrected in phoenix-like fashion.

In May 2016, the schoolhouse from 1922 came under threat of being demolished as the school went under a $5.7 million redevelopment.

One plan was to move the building as far as the old cheese factory in Berwick to keep it safe after a large following on Facebook prompted council to do something to save the his-

toric school hall.

Other places for relocation that were considered were the Marjorie Eastick Reserve and the Cairns Road Recreation Reserve.

While it seemed a remote possibility back in May, the then newly-established Hampton Park Men’s Shed also showed interest in utilising the historic building.

It wasn’t until June that the City of Casey council seriously considered and accepted the application by the men’s shed to use the old school building.

Councillors Wayne Smith

and Damien Rosario were so solidly behind the idea they were willing to pay the relocation costs of the building to Marjorie Eastick Reserve themselves.

At its meeting on Tuesday 21 June, council resolved to accept an offer from the Department of Education and Training (DET) to fund the relocation of the heritage school house to Council land in Marjorie Eastick Reserve, Hampton Park.

The building was gifted to the council and plans for its relocation were quickly drawn up, with an expected relocation date in early 2017.

- La Trobe MP Jason Wood with strong feedback for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull after Mr Wood narrowly reclaimed his seat in July’s federal election.

AT times in 2016, it seemed Casey’s forthright mayor Sam Aziz had declared war on everything.

His targets included big boys such as VicRoads over cleaning up graffitied noise walls, and the State Government over law-and-order and rate-capping.

But in the frenzied weeks before November’s council election, he turned his aggressive rhetoric against local players - a risky tactic for a councillor seeking re-election.

There was his public slamdunking of Casey Basketball Association and its president, accusing them of blackmail over their campaign against court fee rises.

He crossed swords with a Berwick real estate agent for its claims of property rate rises, and made sinister inferences against a Muslim doctor and game hunter’s Facebook profile picture.

He had Facebook spats against an election candidate that accused him of being anti-Muslim, an organiser of a crime prevention forum as well as labelling a member of Casey Against Racism a “hypocrite” for trying to broker a deal over the proposed Narre Warren North mosque.

“My dialogue will be with the leaders of the Islamic community ... who won’t insult my intelligence by mounting vicious attacks against me during an election campaign, then come crawling when they are defeated so comprehensively,” Cr Aziz posted about the latter.

It was fair to say Cr Aziz’s name was never far from the headlines.

In the meantime, Cr Aziz was comfortably re-elected by voters though with a 5 per cent dent to his primaries.

He was also endorsed by councillors for a second consecutive mayoral term in December, receiv-

ing praise for his effectiveness and leadership such as by assigning portfolios to councillors.

The feather in his cap was the law-and-order campaign, which he credited for securing 20 extra cops in the municipality last year with further officers expected next year.

During that time, Casey’s flag was controversially flown at halfmast to show, as Cr Aziz describes, its citizens were in “distress” due to rising levels of serious crime such as home invasions.

Cr Aziz triumphantly posted on Facebook after the promised extra police: “For all the arm chair commentators who accused me of being political ... pardon the pun but: Cop that! It worked!”

For this year’s term, the mayor has nominated his priorities - economic development, community safety and cultural harmony.

That last area will be certainly be one to watch in 2017.

POLICE numbers featured prominently throughout the pages of the Cranbourne News in 2016 but it was in September that the issue gained major traction.

Ron Iddles, Police Association of Victoria secretary, labelled the understaffing of Police in the Cranbourne and surrounding areas a ‘crisis’.

The Victoria Police union launched a tag line: ‘There aren’t enough police in the South-East’ in a bid to drum up support for more officers to be stationed here.

The “crisis” claim by the police union came as the Endeavour Hills police station closed its front counter on weekend nights in what was intended to be a month long trial.

In October, the police station at Endeavour Hills extended the trial before it is set to reviewed in February.

At the time of announcement of changes to Endeavour Hills police station and the policing crisis coming a to a head, Victoria Police made promises to address crime rises in 2017.

Police spokesperson at the time, Ben Radisich, said Victoria Police provided a 24-hour response to the Casey community.

At the same time, the State Government had recently announced an additional 300 frontline police members for the growth area of Cranbourne and surrounds.

It is expected the new police officers will be hitting the streets in 2017 to address the crisis that is policing in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs.

Super angry on booze barn APRIL 2016 saw Casey Mayor Sam Aziz lash out at the Victoria Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation for their approval to build a booze superstore in Cranbourne East.

Cr Aziz said the VCGLR over-ruled a chorus of objections on public-harm grounds against the Linsdell Boulevard project.

The objections came from bodies such as Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Casey Council and public health experts.

Murphy’s store were based around the high rate of alcoholfuelled domestic violence in the area.

In its 11 April ruling, the VCGLR found there was little evidence the store would increase alcohol consumption.

The Casey area is highest ranked for family violence involving alcohol in the state - with the highest intervention order breach rate in the vicinity of the site.

Police data showed high levels of alcohol-related offences in the vicinity of the store’s site - particularly immediately to the site’s west.

However, Casey City Council did not take their opposition to the development to the Supreme Court and instead focused on campaigns to combat the rate of family violence in the area.

An unjust scheme struck

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE proposed Market Lane Special Charge Scheme landed the Casey City Council in hot water after it was found the council acted unjustly - and in part illegally.

In June this year, the council were found to have been acting in an underhanded way when they raised the rates of the charge scheme in a closed council meeting without notifying residents.

The 37 affected residents were not given prior notice or the opportunity to object to the rise in rate from 4.25 per cent to 7.5 per cent.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said a monitor would be appointed for up to 12 weeks to examine and oversee governance at Casey.

Mosque rocked the world

In April, watched by a packed and fiery public gallery, Casey Council unanimously rejected a proposed Narre Warren North mosque with a 16-metre tall minaret and 450 worshippers.

The official reasons were planning grounds - amenity, traffic flows, inadequate parking, noise pollution and the area’s undeniable scenic qualities.

hind her back such as: “Narre Warren North residents said to me: radicalisation and terrorism risks of Islamic mosques should be (considered) in decision making”.

She later explained she hadn’t been allowed to raise such issues during the meeting.

More than 1000 formal objections and the pro-environment Save the Casey Foothills Association backed the council’s stance.

The issue also spawned an anti-Muslim Facebook group Stop the Mosque in Narre Warren that had 15,000-plus likes.

Islamic Trust as well as a group Casey Against Racism were convinced that there were more than just planning grounds behind it.

Saarban spokesman Zain Shah said at the time: “The council was initially in favour, then details leaked out of the council especially from this lady (Cr Crestani).

“It’s just xenophobia.”

Meanwhile, Saarban is set to apply for a scaled-down, modern-style mosque on the same site at 365-367 BelgraveHallam Road in 2017.

The early indications are that key opponents remain opposed to a mosque on that site.

South East Skids drivers were crushed by their penalties.

Out of control

By Cam Lucadou-Wells FOR some of the 41 charged South East Skids hoons, it ended with tears.

The most flagrant of the drivers got jail, some got community corrections orders but what really stung was the loss of their beloved vehicles.

By order of Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, they were to be impounded and crushed.

As one of the drivers put it: “I lost something that means a lot to me in life and it really f***in hurt!”

Mind you, he had nearly killed a spectator as his Falcon XR6 ute swung into the crowd during a series of circular burnouts in a

Dandenong South industrial estate in September 2015.

But for his low intellectual development and low self-esteem, he would have been jailed.

One of the older accuseds - a middle-aged man - sobbed and cried out “No!” when the court heard that his $100,000 BMW could possibly be crushed.

The evidence couldn’t have been more clear.

In every case, the drivers’ antics - and their vehicles’ number plates - had been captured on sets of CCTV stationed at the Licola Crescent “turnaround bowl”.

The footage showed cars and drivers lining up for the chance to furiously smoke their tyres and lose traction in a tight ring

of about 100 spectators, with no barriers between people and the machines.

In the worst cases, two or more cars would be wildly skidding in unison inside the bowl.

Sometimes passengers would be perched out of the windows, at other times spectators nonchalantly walked into the bowl among the tractionless vehicles.

The upshot of Operation Regarder, which netted the long line of hoons, was an absolute success for Victoria Police.

The South East Skids meets’ long-standing dangers were at last brought to a screaming halt not least because of the threat of drivers permanently losing their cars.

WHILE home invasions and aggravated burglaries felt like par for the course in Casey in 2016, one story from March this year of a family who lost precious memories to a group of thieves stands above the rest.

Entering the Berwick home through a broken doggy door, this gang of youths, allegedly including members as young as 12 years old, took presents, cards filled with money and vouchers, mobile phones, wallets, keys, a sound system, a computer, alcohol and most importantly a Nikon digital camera.

It was the photos and video on the camera of the loving couple renewing their wedding vows from 20 February that left the family bereft.

It was the bold and brazen break-in, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, around 5.30am to 6am, while the family were asleep, which bothers the Berwick parents the most.

The story was exactly as Casey police have been telling it for several months and continues to tell today.

Keys left in the inside the door lock, handbags hanging up in the kitchen and valuables sprawled across the table.

But due to the day’s events, the valuables stolen totalled more than $5000, and the footage and photos captured on their Nikon digital camera were irreplaceable.

As later discovered, this house was one of eight that were broken into and burgled in a 24-hour period with thieves going from home to home and ransacking them for valuables.

Police have continued to issue the same warning to people throughout the year, to keep keys and valuables out of plain sight in the home and be sure you have up-to-date security measures.

THE highly anticipated neighbourhood park at Timbertop Estate, Officer is set to open this month so residents can enjoy it in the warmer weather.

Hicks Reserve, named after the former owners of the land, commenced construction earlier this year and is now near completion with the official ribbon cutting to take place on Friday 20 January at 10am.

From the 1800s Timbertop’s land was farmed by the Hicks family, who were early pioneers in the Officer area. The land was used for dairy farming, apple orchards and beef cattle. A LOCAL grandmother’s find of an abandoned case in front of Cranbourne Centrelink brought the town to a standstill for three hours on Tuesday.

Annette Togni, 68, was the first person to notice the small case in the gutter, outside Cranbourne Centrelink and Medicare on Tuesday 6 April.

But more alarmingly, Ms Togni was the first person to hear a “ticking� sound coming from the package.�

Now terrified to return to the scene on Codrington Street, Ms Togni’s pregnant granddaughter Martine Regan, also an eyewitness, has told of the dramatic discovery. “My Nan almost stood on it as she got out of the car, and she immediately yelled “What is that, is that a bomb?�

The pair from Cranbourne North alerted nearby security guards to the strange item, Ms Regan described as a fishing tackle box. “It was grey and navy blue and had a yellow handle, it kind of looked like a car battery and it was ticking loud enough for my Nan and I to hear it,� Ms Regan said. “The guard just said that he wasn’t sure what it was, he said he saw someone drop it off. “My Nan asked if it was safe for us and all the people lined up inside Centrelink to be here, there were children, pregnant women like myself and elderly and he replied, ‘I don’t know, madam’.�

Once the contents had been given the all-clear, the officer retrieved it.

A STICKER book aimed at children and sold in the kids section at a Hampton Park variety store has the F-word on every page.

The ‘Angry Birds’ themed six-page book features the well-known red bird, ‘Terence’, smoking and wearing a snap back and bandana, with a speech bubble which reads, “Mather f*****�.

A rebellious Terence appears in this state on each page among other Angry Birds characters.

Pakenham mother of six, Tammy Wells, bought the offending sticker book on Friday 29 April unaware of what lay inside. “I purchased two sticker books from the variety shop for my three-year-old daughter,� Ms Wells said. “They only cost about $2 each, and the female sales assistant never said anything to me. “One turned out to be completely fine, but I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when my eight-year-old son pointed it out to me.�

Ms Wells said the front cover was quite misleading and took to social media to warn others. “I’ve bought Angry Birds merchandise before and never had an issue, it’s a children’s cartoon and normally I wouldn’t think twice to buy something of that nature,� Ms Wells said. “The front cover looked harmless.�

Ms Wells has confiscated the book from her daughter Sophie, but said she was “really disgusted�. “I’m lucky my son was playing with Sophie at the time and spelt it out to me because he knows he’s not allowed to swear, but he knew it wasn’t right, he asked me what it means,� she said. “I can’t believe that it is being sold as a kid’s book and there were others for sale - they have to be taken off the shelf.�

A Pakenham resident of 10 years, Ms Wells said she rarely went to Hampton Park and wouldn’t be shopping there again. “You expect a shop to check their deliveries before misleading customers,� she said.

The made in China sticker book was sold at a discount store in Hampton Park Shopping Centre on Hallam Road.

IS CRANBOURNE ’Struggle Street’ material?

Some locals - and the mayor in particular - believe it is not.

But that wasn’t the feeling on Melbourne talkback radio, when two callers suggested Cranbourne and Cranbourne West for the next round of the controversial documentary series, set to air late next year.

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz told The News such a suggestion was an “insult�. He added that Cranbourne featured “great schools, great shopping� and “recreational opportunities�.

It’s been more than a year since SBS launched the first series of Struggle Street, filmed around Mount Druitt in Sydney’s west, sparking claims of “poverty porn�.

But SBS has endorsed what the show stands for in a statement, saying it will “shine a light on social and economic disadvantage in Australia�.

In late April SBS announced the commissioning of a second series which will be filmed in several locations around Queensland and Victoria.

A spokesperson from SBS confirmed it is “early in the production process, but that a number of councils have been approached for filming permits�.

However SBS confirmed no locations had been decided on.

Maribyrnong Council has already turned down a request for filming in Braybrook and Cr Aziz advised that the Casey Council had not been approached by SBS. Suburbs being tossed around as suitable locations for the Struggle Street cameras include Broadmeadows, Sunshine and Dandenong but talkback radio callers turned the spotlight on Cranbourne on Friday 3 June.

One caller, a former resident of Cranbourne West, recalled having her birdbath stolen in a new estate and put

the area forward for filming.

But Cr Aziz said Cranbourne’s community spirit was alive, denying it was material for the observational documentary series. “When we show people around Cranbourne they say things like ‘we

They are issues Glenn Munso, a Cranbourne North resident and former drug dealer and addict turned youth worker, believes Cranbourne has in abundance.

Mr Munso, the creator of the Youth YOU Program in Hallam, helps Melbourne’s youth get off drugs and said there were “definitely� areas in Cranbourne which would be suitable for such a documentary. “At the moment I see people on Facebook saying we need to get our area back, we need to claim it back, it’s getting out of control - the breakins, the car thefts and burglaries,� Mr Munso said. “Drugs in Casey is a big issue, I have dealt with kids on ice as young 13.�

Cranbourne West resident, Sonia Pau, 22 said her home town was a nice area and didn’t deserve the scrutiny Struggle Street would bring. “I have lived in Cranbourne West a year and I find it’s better than Noble Park, Dandenong and Frankston,� she said. “I was living in Noble Park since I was five years old and I feel safer in Cranbourne West - I would care if Struggle Street came to Cranbourne because I don’t think it deserves it. “You can walk the streets at night in Cranbourne, you can’t walk the streets at night in Noble Park or Dandenong.�

But it seems even if series producers, Keo Films were to approach the City of Casey, it would be futile.

Cr Aziz told The News, “I would not support Cranbourne or any other community in Casey as a location for Struggle Street.�

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH SHE goes by ‘Lacey’ and she’s been a prostitute for six months - but all she wants is order back in her life. “Routine� she calls it, a sort of structure that the sex industry has thrown out of her life. “All I want is to have routine and responsibilities again,� she said. “You become slack in this job, you can always ring in sick when you want and you become quite disrespectful - I can’t wait to have that again, that’s the hard thing about this job.� ‘Lacey’- her working girl name - currently resides in Cranbourne, but has spent the majority of her adult years backpacking with her best friend, two of those throughout Australia.

The 27-year-old from northern England has been caught up in the secretive and often corrupt world of paid sex for four years.

She has worked as a prostitute in Australia in two stints, for a total of six months - having returned to prostitution after separating from her husband of three years. “My best friend and I were backpacking and we were doing fruit picking for our second year visa in Shepparton and we came to Melbourne and had no money at all,� Lacey recalled. “We learnt that brothels were legal here because in the UK they’re not - so we thought we’d give it a go.�

It was something Lacey never saw in her future, and she has decided it won’t be for much longer. “If I was doing this job and just getting by that would be soul destroying but because I know it’s just a little stint and I’ll have my life back like I did before, it’s easy to get through it,� she said. “But it’s not a bad job, it’s not.�

Lacey worked at a brothel in Seaford for her first three months on the job and said she surprisingly liked it. “I thought it would be like mismatched furniture and mattresses on the floor, but it was beautiful and the girls weren’t junkies, they were lovely,� Lacey said. “We went for an interview and actually we mocked it at first.�

‘Bomb’ stops street Disgusted at the slow speed of the guards to act on the issue, a panicked Ms Regan and Ms Togni drove to Narre Warren Centrelink. “I didn’t want to risk it, I want to meet my son and hold him in my arms,� Ms Regan said. “My Nan was very frightened; she was distraught and started crying, if it was a bomb there was no way we would have survived it if it went off. “The Centrelink guards were extremely unprofessional, they didn’t clear the area, and they didn’t notify anyone – we definitely won’t be going back to that branch, my Nan is still cut up about it.�

Cranbourne Senior Sergeant Daniel Baynes gave the scene the all clear at 1.15pm after more than two hours of assessment from the bomb squad, who used a robot to approach the locked case.

At the scene, Sen Sgt Baynes told Star News the contents of the case were “personal belongings�.

He has since confirmed it was a first aid kit. “There might have been a phone charger in it as well, no-one at this point has come forward and claimed it.�

Close to 100 staff from Centrelink and neighbouring firm, Waters Lawyers, were evacuated and police cordoned off Codrington Street between Sladen and Childers streets.

Still tormented by the experience, Ms Regan said her Nan was so petrified, she wouldn’t go out and collect the mail.

The current plans subject to council, CRRRCM and State Government approval could see blockbuster films hit Cranbourne as soon as this time next year.

Mr Macklin said as soon as council gave him the go-ahead, he would start on it “straight away�. “I imagine it will be a seven-month build or similar and we’ve already done a scenario that could see 40 employees full-time and part-time,� he said.

The pool’s structural shell will stay and form the bones of the new complex, which is set to house a cafe and bar.

Mr Macklin said two of the four cinemas would be a higher class experience where food would be delivered and would seat 46 people; the other two cinemas were set to seat 90. “I want it to add to the entire precinct along Grant Street and be a place people can go have a burger and a drink and see a movie,� he said.

Mr Macklin has almost everything sorted except for a name for the complex and wants Cranbourne schools, community groups and families to help him choose one. “Once we’ve got partway through the planning application we’ll ask for name suggestions from the community,� he said.

Looking into the future, Mr Macklin can’t rule out more cinemas and even an outdoor theatre. “It is very exciting – the site is a little bit of an eyesore at the moment and we’ll do it all up,� he said.

The announcement couldn’t come at a better time for a group of passionate locals who heated up their online campaign for a cinema in Cranbourne recently.

THE Cranbourne Cup won’t be rescheduled this spring after the gusty winds that tore through the state on Sunday ripped the hearts out of organisers who were forced to cancel the $300,000 race.

Sunday’s 10-race meeting was postponed after just the first race on the card, with the strong winds - which were only predicted to get worse deemed to have posed a health and safety risk.

Not only was Cranbourne’s showpiece race postponed, but so too was the $100,000 Apache Cat Classic.

After consulting with the Cranbourne Turf Club, Racing Victoria determined that there was no suitable date remaining this Spring Racing Carnival to hold Casey’s signature race.

There’s now a real possibility the race could be moved to Friday night, 21 April next year - the date of the turf club’s official 150th anniversary.

The race would then return to its traditional spring timeslot in the 2017'18 racing calendar. “We’ll consider the possibility of running the Cranbourne Cup, as well as the Apache Cat Classic, in the autumn next year and ensure either way that some of the prizemoney from (the) meeting is used to bolster the club’s 150th anniversary race meeting on 21 April,� said Racing Victoria operations manager Paul Bloodworth.

Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge described the situation on Sunday as “devastating�, but added that if the Cup was moved to autumn, the club would try and hold it under lights “as a good point of difference�. “A lot of work goes into these days - it’s probably nine months of the year of planning and execution, and to think we had such a beautiful day yesterday (Saturday),� he said. “Today, the wind just got to a level where the jockeys and stewards thought it was not safe to continue in those conditions.

Mr Bainbridge said the jockeys raised some initial concerns about the strong winds on Sunday, which led to the stewards ultimately deciding that the meeting needed to be postponed. “I think there’d be a lot of disappointed people, as we are,� he said.

The Eagle speaks CRANBOURNE’S 13th senior premiership cup would be overflowing if the blood, sweat and tears of the last five years were poured into the precious piece of silverware.

The blood spilt during five homeand-away campaigns, the sweat of just as many pre-seasons, and the freerunning tears that have accompanied the Eagles four consecutive grand final defeats from 2012 would produce a cocktail of rare emotion.

It’s a cocktail that would exemplify hard work, typify resilience, and epitomise the hard work and character that the Cranbourne Football Club has had in abundance throughout this epic journey.

It’s a journey that ended with the ultimate reward on Saturday, a 34-point victory over reigning-champions Berwick that ended five years of ridicule in the South East Football Netball League.

Never mind the fact that the Eagles had finished top three for a remarkable eighth consecutive year, or were playing in their sixth grand final on the trot, the ridicule stemmed from their inability to get the job done on the biggest stage.

But second-year coach Simon Goosey dedicated himself to changing mindsets, rebuilding a team, and on Saturday added a fifth coaching triumph to his previous success stories at Mornington in 1996, ’98, 2001 and ’04.

The storylines are remarkable.

Nick Darbyshire was playing just his second game of senior football, Michael Thompson his second game for the season and, most remarkable of all, Matthew Weller was playing his first game of senior football since this very day in 2014.

The wheels are currently in motion for an independent cinema complex and bar on the Grant Street crown land.

Developer Ian Macklin has no concerns about the failed Village Cinema venture at the former Cranbourne shopping centre, saying “Competition doesn’t worry me.�

Mr Macklin, Director of TM Design Group has already sat down with Casey council officers and has submitted plans for the four-cinema complex, with the backing of the Cranbourne Racecourse and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management (CRRRCM). “Council officers seemed fairly keen and a cinema is obviously needed in the area and seeing that people are campaigning for one certainly lifted my heart,� Mr Macklin said.

The heated pool site slowly became Cranbourne’s resident eyesore, when Casey Race opened in 2009 and has struggled to be reinvigorated since.

Known to some as the unofficial Mayor of Blind Bight, Bob O’Connell knows his neighbours by nickname and by flower.

Bob has managed to walk his dog, keep his “beer belly� down, and check up on his over 65-year-old neighbours with the help of a flower, for around 16 years.

To ensure his ageing neighbours, who live alone are safe and well, Bob drops a flower off at their door on his morning walk. “If I don’t see them that’s when I drop the flower,� Bob said. “And if it’s not picked up the next day I’ll knock on their door.�

Some days it might just be a sprig of tea-tree, but it’s a message that someone cares, Bob said. “Everyone looks out for one another in small communities, and dropping the flower off is a way of knowing they are alright without being too intrusive,� he said.

Data released in August last year, from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), showed a direct correlation between falls in people over the age of 65.

According to the AIHW the most common causes of injury in 2012-'13 were falls, at 40 per cent and transport crashes at 12 per cent.

During that year over 170,000 people were hospitalised as a result of a fall. Over half the cases were people aged over 65 years, and most people hospitalised for a fall injury in this age group were women.

The AIHW also reported an increase in injury hospitalisation, with falls the leading cause.

Casey Neighbourhood Watch chairperson, Robert Ward has applauded the floral safety idea and hopes to see it spread across Casey. “It’s a great example of someone taking initiative to promote community safety,� Robert said. “And they are a very vulnerable cohort of older people living alone and this is a simple way of showing we care - it can make a world of difference.�

Destanee in the making

By Nick Creely A STAR was born on 3 January, with 16-year-old Narre Warren tennis ace Destanee Aiava becoming the first player born this century to win a WTA main-draw match.

When the News talked to Destanee for the first time way back in 2012, the then 12-year-old spoke about the goal of becoming the “world number one”.

And now Destanee, in 2017, is turning heads with her natural flair with the racket, and her powerful build and natural poise are not going unnoticed.

In the match on 3 January, in front of a crowd exceeding 2000 people, Destanee came up against American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and downed the Olympic doubles gold medallist and revered singles player in a threeset victory 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4.

In fact, the game itself was met with some disruptions, with heavy rain the night before forcing play to be suspended.

But when she resumed, it was almost as if a switch-flicked, and from there, Australia saw the talent that has been working behind closed doors to achieve her ultimate goal - being world number one.

Not many people watching her strut her stuff with her imposing serve would have given her much of a chance against a woman double her age, Currently ranked 387th in the world, the win was simply stunning, with many people not even knowing who the young star was.

But now they do.

“I haven’t really looked at my phone since the end of the match, I’ve mainly just talked to my Mum, and she just said good job, and then took me to the practice court after,” she chuckled.

“I struggled a bit at the end but I

got through it - a lot of things were actually going through my head, I was pretty nervous playing in front of that many people - it was the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of.

“I was a bit inconsistent through the match, but it feels pretty good to be known and supported by so many different people - I just want to go out there and enjoy the experience.

“When I walk in its just crazy, there are people that I have seen on TV be-

fore just there and it’s crazy.”

But Destanee’s dream run came to an end the following day, going down fighting 6-4, 6-3 to world number nine Svetlana Kuznetsova, bowing out in 70 minutes.

But what’s next for the prodigious young talent?

Well she has qualified as one of seven wildcard entries for next week’s Australian Open, after winning the 2016 18/U Australian Championship,

and will now become the only player born in 2000 or later to participate in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament.

It has taken Destanee just four years since stating she wants to become the “world number one”, to playing on one of the world’s biggest stages, so in another four years, perhaps she will be able to finally achieve her ultimate goal if not before.

Cranbourne Cups will runneth over THE Cranbourne Turf Club and the Cranbourne Harness Racing Club will join forces for one truly unique event, with both the TAB Cranbourne Cup and Decron Cranbourne Pacing Cup to be run together on Friday 3 March 2017.

Nailbiting end to epic game

By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 1 REPLAY (Onedayer) IT was destined to be the game of the round for a reason, and the epic finish that unfolded at Casey Fields could have serious ramifications at the end of the season.

With both teams sitting inside the four coming into the round, and facing off against their next door neighbours, the tensions were high in the searing sun.

And Cranbourne skipper Steven Spoljaric did not hesitate to bat first and make Berwick chase them.

But batting was difficult, and the Eagles scraped away, somehow managing 135 off 39.1 overs.

Bears skipper Jarrod Goodes (4/18) continued his stellar season, and picked up the crucial wicket of Matt Chasemore at a vital part of the innings.

With the pressure on, the Bears started in solid fashion, putting on 56 for the first wicket, before a mini collapse in the middle-order saw them sitting at an uncomfortable 6/110, still 26 runs short of victory.

And in the first ball of the very last over of the match, and with just six to win and one wicket in hand, Jack Phillips was run out in stunning fashion for a duck, and in the process, dented their top-four hopes.

In other matches, Heinz-Southern Districts have emerged victorious, in a highly impressive all-round display against the revered Springvale South.

Gun Cobras all-rounder Michael Davies (93 not out)) played a splendid knock that lifted them to an imposing 6/187 off 40 overs.

But the Bloods succumbed to some elite pressure bowling, losing four wickets for not many, as the bowling quartet of Kaushalya Weeraratne (2/13), Mark Davies (2/17), Paul Stockdale (2/19) and Chadwick Van Estrop (3/28) took complete control.

The break has done little in reversing the fortunes of Narre Warren, with the Dingley finally breaking through for a well-deserved victory at Sweeney Reserve.

Sent in to bat, the Magpies, through reliable performer Janaka Liyanabadalge (35), scratched together 117 all-out, before the Dingoes chased it down with plenty of overs to spare, and five wickets left in the shed.

JORDAN Wyatt is the kind of cricketer that never shies away from the big moments, and amidst the positivity emanating from Casey-South Melbourne this season in a number of different areas, a match-winning star has emerged from the shadows.

Just before Christmas, Wyatt oversaw his Swans chase down 330 against the Monash Tigers, a side renowned for its bowling talent, as he struck a patient and well-timed 92, just as it looked like they were running out of legs.

To prove this was no fluke, Wyatt then backed it up on Saturday against Melbourne University, striking a fabulous 78 off 77 balls in 38-degree heat, as his Swans won their fourth game in a row and are now charging towards a shock finals' appearance.

In this particular game, the Swans somehow escaped with yet another stunning victory, chasing down 216 in the very last over.

There were other solid contributors with the blade too, with Luke Manders (22), Devin Pollock (29), Lachlan Sperling (23) and Brendan Rose (21) chiming in with valuable runs.

Earlier in the match, despite the searing heat at the picturesque University oval, the Swans bowlers toiled hard, with Brendan Rose (4/42), Nathan Lambden (3/39) and Lachlan Sperling (2/30) helping them

The batting product, hailing from Drouin, has been around the blocks after a stint at Melbourne, Casey-South Melbourne, his home club in Drouin, and now finally back at the Swans, and said that the appetite and desire to win will never diminish.

“I’ve always had the hunger to make runs - I just love it and that’s the best part of this sport,” he told the News.

“There is not much better feeling in this sport when you play an innings that helps get your team over the line - my last two innings have been an awesome feeling.

"It was an awesome feeling to contribute in a winning side I’m all about the team and how it goes, and obviously individual performances are rewarding, but it’s team first for me - you ask anyone in our team and we

are all the same.”

Wyatt also said that he slightly changed his approach after an inconsistent start to the season, and now believes that will hold him in good stead heading into a tough four game block.

“I spoke to BK (Brian Keogh) during the week, and he told me to take about 20 balls until I start really getting aggressive - it wasn’t really working for me in the Twenty20s before Christmas,” he said.

“I sort of did that on the weekend and it worked again, so I’m giving myself some time before accelerating - With the Twenty20s I had to try and accelerate quicker, and now looking back I wish I had my time again, one day it comes off in that format and others it doesn’t.”

With the prospect of a finals' berth for the young Swans, Wyatt said the excitement is plain to see, but stresses the hard work comes now.

“We aren’t getting ahead of ourselves, because with a young group it can be a potential downfall, so we are looking just one week at a time, and try to consolidate our position - we want to play a final, that’s why we play the sport - we’re in a good position but a lot of hard work is to come,” he said.

The Swans tackle FitzroyDoncaster in a two-dayer at Casey Fields on Saturday from 11am, in what looms as a potentially season-defining clash in their finals' hopes.

New year gets off with quite a bang!

By David Nagel NEW Year’s fireworks have continued in West Gippsland cricket with some stunning individual performances reverberating around the association on Saturday.

A brilliant century from Kooweerup star Ben Spicer (108) against his former club Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc was the highlight of the top-flight Premier Division, but it was in District and Sub-District where the fuse was well and truly lit.

Cardinia Sub-District captain Brad Remy (149) took just 37 balls to rack up an amazing century against Gembrook, kicking on to his final total off just 52 balls as the Bulls registered an impressive 9/339 in 40 overs.

Remy has been in terrific form this season, with ‘starts’ of 89, 97, 50 and 90 finally turned into a big one. Brookers captain Cam Williams (127 not out) returned fire, but his 13 boundaries and three sixes saw his side fall 71 runs short of victory.

Catani’s Mitch Gregson (7/10 off

7.1 overs) made sure the Sub-District highlight reel kept rolling with a dominant display against Pakenham, while Tooradin opener Kane Latham (150 not out) put his brandnew bat to good use with a whirlwind century against Cranbourne Meadows in the District Division.

This was the first time that Latham had taken his ‘Icon’ bat to the crease - an association that is certainly off to a flying start!

The Premier Division boys locked horns in a round that looked largely predictable on paper, with the powerhouse teams at the top taking on the stragglers of the competition. And most games went according to plan, with Merinda Park (7/200cc) pulling off the only surprise of the round with a resounding victory over Cardinia (157).

Former Bulls’ coach Simon Parrott (86) put his old club to the sword, smashing his highest score for the Cobras in an innings that lasted just 90 balls. Leigh Patterson (4/31 off 6) was also impressive for the Cobras who -after being winless after round five - have now won

three of their four to be one of the form teams in the competition.

A win against Tooradin this week will see the Cobras claw their way back to within two games of the top four.

Skipper Danny Diwell has been impressed with the attitude of his side, even in the midst of their poor start to the season.

“There were never any bad attitudes within the club, everyone stayed positive and we’re just enjoying playing cricket together,” Diwell said.

“We’ve got some tough challenges ahead but we’re coming off a win, we’ve got a fair degree of confidence, and if we can reproduce our form from last week we’ll give the next two weeks (Tooradin and Kooweerup) a real shake. We’ve made life difficult for ourselves but I couldn’t be prouder of the character the boys have shown.”

In other games, Tom Hussey (59) scored his 22nd fifty in Tooradin colours, sitting proudly alongside his eight tons, as the Seagulls brushed aside Upper Beaconsfield. And at

Kooweerup, Spicer’s second century of the season led the Demons to a soft victory over the struggling Yabbies.

The hard-hitting number three has now made 443 runs for the season, at an average of 88, giving the Demons a new intimidating force at the top of the order.

And finally, the move of Jason Williams (78) to the top of the order has worked out perfectly for Pakenham, the graceful right-hander showing his class in the Lions’ 60tun win over Emerald.

Lions’ skipper Dom Paynter said Williams was primed for a big innings against the Bombers.

“He had a great finish to 2016, he’s in good nick and had a good week on the track and was pretty keen to do the job,” Paynter said.

“He wanted to do it, he wanted to take on the challenge of facing the new ball and an innings like that will hold him in good stead for the rest of the season.”

The Lions travel to Cardinia this Saturday in the Round 10 blockbuster.

CRANBOURNE BOWLS THE Cranbourne Bowls Club singles championships took place over the Christmas holiday break in front of a good crowd played in perfect conditions on beautifully manicured grass greens.

The women’s final was played between reigning champion Lynne Wood and contender Cheryl Wright.

The game was close from the start with each player putting in some great bowls throughout the day.

However, as the game went on and the stalemate continued, Lynne eventually broke the shackles and picked up some numbers late in the game to eventually go on and win the game.

In doing so, Wood created history at the club by becoming a back-to-back-to-back club singles champion, winning three consecutive titles.

Asked after the game how to become a club champion three times in a row, Lynne replied: “You need a lot of concentration, everything going your way and most important of all, a lot of luck on your side,” she said with a cheeky grin.

The Men’s final was played between Roger Roscoe and Doug Boggie.

Roger was determined to get away with a good start because Doug has a reputation as a fearless competitor.

Roger played the game of his life and got off to a large lead that Doug could not reduce and went on to win the title.

This was the second singles title that Roger had won at the club but he was not sure when he won it last.

After a quick inspection of the honour board it was discovered that Roger last won the title 21 years ago.

Asked after the game if 21 years a long time between drinks, Roger replied: “Just as well I am not a drinking man.”

Congratulations to both winners and runnersup who all played with great spirit and did the club proud as ambassadors of the club.

Mighty Mustang goes hard

By Ewan Kennedy UNTIL now Aussies have had to bring in secondhand Mustangs from the US of A, or perhaps some other intermediate country.

While there were some imports by Ford Australia back in the mid-'60s then again in 2001, these were overpriced and the local conversion to right-hand drive should have been visually better, though mechanically they were fine.

The Ford Mustang finally reached Australia in full factory format in 2015 and has been a huge sales success. Order one now and your chances of getting it this year are slim.

We couldn’t believe our luck when we scored a road test of a Mustang V8 GT for the two-week Christmas/New Year period. Normally we only get cars for one week, so this was a real bonus. Even better it was coloured in a brilliant red. (Thanks also to whoever crashed the one we should have been road testing for a single week a few months back …)

Mustang comes as a coupe (called Fastback by Ford) and convertible ours had the hardtop, maybe we can score an open-top one next time.

Ideally in winter when the weather is more suited to topdown motoring in our home area on the Gold Coast.

Prices start at a ridiculously low $45,990 for the Mustang EcoBoost

coupe with a manual gearbox. Ours was an auto V8, at just $59,990.

Long bonnet, short tail - styling geniuses at Ford came up with this stunning theme way back in 1964. There were some shockers in the 1970s and '80s before a return to normality in the mid-'90s. The current model, released in 2014 takes us right back to the styling genius stage.

Inside there’s a neat and simple design for instruments and controls that works beautifully.

Mustang is powered by either a 5.0-litre, twin-cam, four-valve V8 or a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine. The V8 has had many upgrades in recent years, with lessons learnt in developing the special-edition 2012 Mustang Boss 302. These let it breathe better, especially at higher revs. The result is power of 306 kW and 530 Nm of torque.

The 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol engine reaches 233 kW and 432 Nm and isn’t to be sneezed at. So far we’ve only tested it at the Ford Proving Ground and it’s both quick and nimble.

A six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters can be specified. Ours had the auto, to be honest this is probably the pick of the pair for real-life driving. Though we can understand the purists who prefer a do-it-yourself gearbox.

The 2017 Mustang has Ford’s Sync 3 system with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Ford Applink 3.0. It offers increased functionality and responsiveness compared to the system in the first MY2016 Sync 2 Mustang imports to Australia.

The high-resolution 8.0-inch colour touchscreen is clear and easy to read but it’s rather low on the central dash and may cause driver inattention for longer periods than we are comfort-

able with.

Huge tyres, big powerful Brembo brakes, well-sorted suspension and a very responsive V8 engine provide not only great driving pleasure, but also plenty of ability to stay out of trouble.

Should you, or someone else, make a big mistake then you will be pleased to know Ford Mustang has received a five-star ANCAP rating.

The V8 sounds and feels exactly the way a sporty V8 should. It’s lumpy at idle, produces a nice snarl even when you accelerate gently in traffic condi-

tions - and roars when you get onto the open road and give it a bit of stick.

Is this the most enjoyable V8 I’ve ever sat behind? Almost certainly yes okay Maseratis may sound even better than this Ford, but have a look at their price tag.

Snick the shifter down into Sport and the Mustang isn’t happy at very low speeds, surging and carrying on and a real hassle to drive in a carpark.

Which is exactly the way it should be you want sport, you get it.

Throttle response from the nonturbo engine is virtually instantaneous and the engine is happy to rev to the top of the scale, the latter a major improvement on V8s of old.

This is a big car, but it doesn’t feel like it on the road, being quick in the steering, providing reasonable feedback through the electric steering assistance and happy to hold the road at big cornering speeds.

There are really only two seats worth talking about as Mustang is a 2+2 not a full four-seater if there’s anyone other than kids in the back.

Seat support is good without being full-on sports units. They are adjustable for height, which will probably please those who are vertically challenged and intimidated by a very long bonnet.
