NOOSA Council has partnered with local business Rockcote to turn polystyrene packaging into innovative building products.

Noosa Council’s Waste Manager Wayne Schafer said the launch of polystyrene recycling from this Christmas at Noosa’s Resource Recovery Centres, was exciting and a major win, with many people being left with large amounts of packaging material after the festive season.

Noosa residents can drop off polystyrene for free at Noosa Council’s Resource Recovery Centres from 26 December. Residents can also drop off other, pre-sorted, bulky Christmas packaging such as cardboard and paper.

Council will continue to offer this free service into 2017.

Mr Schafer said Council was thrilled to partner with Yandina-based Rockcote to deliver this innovative project.

“Award-winning Rockcote has developed a unique way of converting polystyrene into construction materials.

“With piles of polystyrene typically ending up at the local landfill every Christmas, where it will sit for hundreds - if not thousands of years - this initiative is a fantastic Christmas present for the environment.

“We encourage everyone to do their bit for the environment this Christmas by making an extra effort to recycle all their packaging waste,” Mr Schafer said.

Polystyrene is a type of plastic that is non bio-degradable and breaks down into tiny micro-particles that can cause health problems for the birds, animals and marine life that ingest it.

Cardboard, hard plastic containers, steel and aluminium cans, plus glass bottles can all go into the yellow lid recycling bin. Bulky packaging, including polystyrene, cardboard and ewaste such as electrical goods, computers and phones, can all be dropped off at the Resources Recovery Centres, free of charge.

CATS Claw Creeper and Madeira vines are being hunted out in the Kin Kin Catchment as part of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation’s Keep it in Kin Kin project.

Noosa and District Landcare Group staff and Noosa Council’s pest officer, Ken English, have been scouring the lower Kin Kin Catchment for the nasty weeds over the last two months.

Noosa Landcare’s Projects Manager, Steve Husband, said the vines are called ‘transformer vines’ in so far as they can smother and kill otherwise healthy forest.

“Within the Kin Kin catchment we think we have a chance to bring the vines under control and in particular keep our riparian vegetation intact,” he said.

“We have spent several days in the field surveying over 120 hectares of creek-line vegetation to assess the extent of vine weeds in the lower Kin Kin Catchment.

Between Wahpunga Park and the Great Sandy National Park at Elanda we found 92 small infestations.

“I am really glad to say all of these were mapped and have since been treated by Noosa Landcare Conservation Services Contracting Crews. This is a great outcome.”

Further surveys over the coming months are planned for the remainder of the Kin Kin catchment.

Work on the new Rufous Street Precinct at Peregian Beach will begin next month after council awarded a $768,000 construction contract at the last Ordinary Meeting for 2016.

WORK on the new Rufous Street Precinct at Peregian Beach will begin next month after council awarded a $768,000 construction contract at the last Ordinary Meeting for 2016.

Council will introduce a street calming devise at the existing crossing on David Low Way and install a new pedestrian refuge near the David Low Way/Heron Street intersection to improve both safety and access.

Rufous Lane will get LED lighting and new landscaping, plus pathway upgrades to better connect David Low Way and the kindergarten car park.

The council project includes landscaping in Rufous Street, 25 new parking spaces, street lighting and the temporary carpark conditioned as part of the digital hub approval.

Peregian Beach Community Association vice-president Barry Cotterell said the new-look laneway, crossing improvements and

reduced speed environment would improve linkages between the village and the Rufous Street Precinct.

“This responds to the community’s requests for safer crossings on the David Low Way and will make it easier for people to walk between the village and the recreation precinct,” Mr Cotterell said.

Deputy mayor Frank Wilkie said the works were the first stage of upgrading the Rufous Street Precinct.

“Since Peregian’s public consultations in the middle of last year, this project has provided a rare opportunity to respond to calls for more public open space, better connections between the village and Rufous Street plus offsite parking to meet growing pressure on Peregian Village,” he said.

Council awarded the construction contract to respected local company Shadforths at the last Ordinary Meeting on Thursday 15 December.

According to the National and International Visitor Survey by Tourism Research Australia, in the year ending June 2016, total visitors were up by 15 per cent to 2.2 million, total nights spent was also up by 15 per cent to 4.1 million and the total spend from visitors increased 23 per cent to $831.3 million.

Tourism Noosa attribute the great stats to a comprehensive marketing campaign run throughout the year, as well as targeted workshops, networking nights and training programs for local tourism operators to help them stay ahead of the competition.

Tourism Noosa also remains as one of the region’s busiest volunteer organisations with over 100 volunteers from the Noosa Visitor Information Centre taking part in product knowledge via training workshops,

visiting operators and site inspections of businesses.

Tourism Noosa also attained a State Government grant for a workforce capability and capacity building project, the Noosa Job Showcase, to fund an employment and workforce development project to provide 60 unemployed or under-employed people with key skills and a Certificate II in Hospitality. The organisation is now working with members to create placement opportunities.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the increase in visitors to the region has been great for Noosa.

Tough times for an ex-TAFE

By Jolene Ogle SINCE closing two and a half years ago, the former Noosa TAFE site has cost taxpayers a staggering $170,080 as it sits dormant, wasting away.

In documents shown to Noosa Today, Noosa MP Glen Elmes asked the Attorney-General and Minister for Training and Skills Yvette D’Ath for all operating costs of the former TAFE site from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016.

The bill for the year was $68,032 and includes council rates of $12,854, electricity charges of $4248, Unitywater charges of $323, maintenance and gardening costs of $32,015 and an $18,592 security bill for the year. The TAFE has now been closed for two and a half years.

“This is the cost to run a TAFE that doesn’t exist,” Mr Elmes said.

Mr Elmes said he understood the Labor Government wanted to hold a review into TAFE, but said the community had been waiting long enough.

“I keep saying to them, have a review into TAFE, but this isn’t a TAFE anymore. It’s a group of empty buildings so deal with it separately. They’re now two years into their term and that thing is still sitting there like that, deteriorating,” he said.

“It’s going to cost many, many tens of thousands of dollars to bring that facility to some sort of position to be leased, rented or sold.

They’ve got to do one of three things; sell, rent or lease. They’re not going to open another TAFE college here. TAFE told me that.”

Mr Elmes said the LNP party were often criticised for closing the site, but it was closed because “no-one was using it”.

“If someone thought it was a great educational facility, well they’ve had two years to re-open it and they haven’t done it. It just sits there,” he said.

The empty former Noosa TAFE site is costing taxpayers more than $68,000 a year.

Given a dingo's chance THE Save Fraser Island Dingoes group is pleading with visitors to Fraser Island to take time to read and understand the dingo safety rules to help protect the precious species.

As Christmas grows closer, concerns grow for the welfare of Fraser Island wildlife, namely, the iconic dingo.

With the arrival of hordes of holiday makers comes the risk for incidents whereby two animals have already been destroyed this year for 'threatening’ behaviour, the most recent on 26 November.

Incident reports indicate this animal, a juvenile female with pups, was being fed and encouraged by visitors, even to the point of attempting to pat her, also children were left unsupervised. noosatoday.com.au

This is a recipe for disaster and as a result the animal would be confused and continue to seek out people for food, especially when she is a young, inexperienced female trying to feed her pups.

Without parental guidance the pups may then present what authorities consider a 'threat’ as they mature, seeking out the easiest food supply, which would be at campsites.

According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife the highest number of high-risk dingo interactions on Fraser Island were recorded over the past year, this would suggest that current resources are inadequate and management strategies again need review.

It is imperative that indepth studies of animals, such as this female, be undertaken

to find an alternative to euthanasia. It is not the solution and only perpetuates the problem.

Save Fraser Island Dingoes is are asking that visitors take time to read and understand the dingo safety rules: It is recommended that children under 14 camp within fenced areas.

Don’t encourage or feed animals.

Don’t harass the animals.

Respect their territory and observe from a distance.

If anyone witnesses an attempt to harm or interfere with an animal, such as a deliberate vehicle strike, it is important that it is reported, the authorities can’t act if people don’t come forward.

If fortunate to sight an animal be mindful of your actions.

Dave has an eye for that ‘killer’ shot

BECOMING a bit of Noosa icon and at times a permanent fixture on our beaches, Dave Gleeson has worked hard to take his photography business Surfshots Noosa to the next level.

Keen surfer, father of two, volunteer lifeguard, surf coach and professional photographer based at sunrise beach, Dave is really living his dream.

After a 20-plus year career in newspapers and magazines working as national advertising and marketing manager for a broad range of men’s sporting magazines he decided just two years ago to pursue his passion of photography.

The first 12 months were incredibly difficult making ends meet and as a guy in his forties with a mortgage and two kids, Dave questioned his leap of faith.

Dave said that with the support of local businesses and Tourism Noosa members the past year Surfshots Noosa had finally become busy with a wide variety of photography work.

“Unfortunately Noosa doesn’t get the regular surf that I’d like so apart from surf photography, which actually only represents about 10 per cent of my work these days, I also shoot events, weddings, family portraits, real estate, products and more. Basically if something needs to be shot, I can do it,” he said.

He moved up from Sydney to Noosa around five years ago and began snapping photos of the daily surf action around Noosa as there wasn’t that regular service available.

“My focus was to ‘shoot’ everyday surfers who may never have seen a shot of themselves in action before and post up daily information via social media and my website www.surfshots.com.au “I don’t shoot professional surfers (they’ve already seen lots of images of themselves) but the tourists, mums, dads, kids and older surfers around town really love seeing photos of themselves and being able to purchase one in super high professional quality at great rates if they want to,” Dave said.

He was approached by Tourism Noosa to shoot imagery for them to promote Noosa as an idyllic destination to the rest of the world and has shot all their hero images this year including the Melbourne Tram hero image.

“That one covered of most of this year’s marketing material. I’ve also done aerial video and imagery for them with the drone camera which has also been used to lure visitors from all around the world,” he said.

Surfshots are the official photographer for Merricks Noosa Learn to Surf, the Noosa Festival of Surfing, Sunshine Beach Surf Club and Hydrothon Noosa and official aerial photographer at Noosa triathlon.

Dave’s labour of love has gone on to provide prints and images to people and business all over Australia and the world.

“I have guys in Sweden and America with my images hanging on their walls. I could have never imagined that five years ago.

“I am incredibly happy that I chose Noosa

as a destination to raise our kids, Katie and Mitch, and create an awesome lifestyle,” he said.

Micky’s now healthier and happier all over FUN and popular Noosa Aquatic Centre Aqua Aerobics member Micky Coghill has taken out the 12-week challenge.

Through hard work and determination Micky lost an incredible 12.8kg.

“The biggest changes are to my health,“ she said.

“I love that I’ve lost the weight as I thought it was too late to lose weight at my age but the improvement to my health has been phenomenal. The ease I find in exercising, walking and general movement is just exciting.

My strength has improved out of sight.”

Micky said she wanted to thank NAC Aqua Instructor and 12week Challenge coordinator Delia Thomas and said she owes thanks to the support of the other girls.

“It was a team effort,” she said.

On completion, Delia took the girls into the NAC gym and showed them how heavy the weight they had lost was.

Micky could hardly hold the 12.8kg and was astounded at the weight.

EMPLOYEES from the Ogilvie Group completed Welcome to Noosa training this week ahead of the busy summer season.

Staff from Rickys, Locale Noosa, Wood Fire Grill and aromas noosa undertook two private training sessions conducted by Tourism Noosa this week in the Noosa-specific customer service training program.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said it was great to see some of Noosa’s most well-known restaurants undertake the training.

“As Noosa heads into the busiest season of the year, it is great to see restaurateurs taking the initiative and getting their teams inspired and ready to welcome our visitors”.

“In addition to providing customer service tips, Welcome to Noosa offers some great information into Noosa, why the region is so special, its history, key things to do in Noosa, information about events in Noosa and more,” Mr Massingham said.

David Jouy from Rickys completed the training and said “Welcome to Noosa was great, it provided some good information on Noosa that I

didn’t know, despite living here for some time. It was also great to hear about the Noosa events and get some great tips on how to share this with our guests”.

Welcome to Noosa is a training program that can be completed online at any time or completed in group training sessions conducted by Tourism Noosa.

Peak is in sight for the sprint people AS we sat at the dining room table and chatted about the recent Noosa Gift, official starter and organiser Ian Smith said: “You know one of our major goals (indicating toward his wife Michelle) is to attend the Stawell Gift - but we will only do so when we have one of our local athletes contesting the event. And when you consider this year’s result - that might not be so far away”.

To say that this year’s final was a sensation would definitely be the understatement of the event’s sevenyear history.

The reason for the sensation was a tall rangy 15-year-old schoolgirl, named Samantha Stanley.

Running off a front mark of 18 metres, this young lady made history by becoming at 15, the youngest as well as the first female to win the Noosa Gift.

For Ian, the gift has also been a double achievement. Not only did he help, along with all his fellow workers in the Noosa Little Athletics and the Queensland Athletic League, to make it the best meet ever, but also at the opening ceremony he became the proud recipient of the Australian Athletic Confederation Certificate for Outstanding Performance - The Australian Administrator of the Year.

“It really came as a surprise,” Ian said. “I had no idea, but I was proud to receive the award. It reflects back on everyone not just me.”

For Ian and Michelle it started back in October 2010 when the first gift was run at Read Park.

“However we wanted to expand so we contacted Queensland Athletics League - they agreed, gave us permission and their full support.

Because the gift is a handicap event, we had to have a handicapper, and to get a good one was absolutely vital.

We contacted Bobbie Cook veteran with some 35 years of experience.

He had been my beach coach back in 1983; we knew each other well; so he said yes.”

Then in 2012 the senior club was started, and backed by Queensland Athletics.

“The reason for this was to create a pathway to bigger and better opportunities for our young athletes,” Ian said. “Because at that time we didn’t have the structure available, on certain occasions our people had to move away to compete, and of course they couldn’t compete in Noosa colours.”

This carnival incorporates both Professional Sprint Races for men and women as well as Little Athletics children events.

Talking to Ian and Michelle, it became obvious that here were two of many people, very dedicated to this sport; a sport whose athletes start at the ripe old age of under-6 and go right through to the senior ranks.

As with all sports, as the contestants grow older, there will lurk in their sub-conscious their ultimate goals. For the footballer it’s the NRL, the swimmer the Olympics. However for our runners it could be two fold - first of all is of course the ultimate event, the Olympic Games, then that great Australian icon, the Stawell Gift.

Regarding the name ’gift’ and its background, Ian said: “What a lot of people don’t understand, is that most country towns had a gift at their local annual shows, so really the sport of sprinting in Australia has been very widespread and ongoing for years.

The Stawell Gift started in 1878 and is now one of the world’s most famous and prestigious footraces; and it’s because of all these country gifts that it has consolidated.”

Ian and Michelle then took it further when they explained that professional foot running is reputed to have had its origin in England, in the mid19th century.” And would you believe, the winner got a small nugget of gold,” said Michelle with a laugh.

According to Stawell Gift Historians, the distance of 130 metres was originally the distance between two local pubs in the English town of Sheffield. With a background such as this, plus its survival over the many years, it is understandable why the name gift is held in such high esteem.

Making the move in 2012 to establish the senior club has been successful. Since then several members of Noosa have competed and won medals at state and national level.

“As you can understand there are many people who have worked hard to make our club the success that it is today; a real team effort. Also it is great to see the various levels of the business community that through their sponsorship, have become involved; Pacific Ford, Accom Noosa, Richardson and Wrench Real Estate, Murray and Associates, Surveyors, plus the Noosa Heads Surf Club; now the major sponsor behind the big event , theNoosa Gift.”

For Ian, the road to the Girraween Sports Complex and Noosa Little Athletics, started at the Brisbane Boys College when, with success in his disciplines of sprinting and jumps, he made the college track and field team; a team of which he was to be, two years later, appointed captain.

On leaving high school Ian enrolled at QUT where he studied Land Surveying and for weekend activities joined, with his father’s blessing, the Southport SLSC. “Dad was a member of the Kurrawa Club and it was only natural that he would have liked his son to follow in his footsteps. Regarding coaching there are three training sessions for the athletic club per week. Those who have moved through to elite level come under the watchful eye of Mick Hooper, level 4 head coach, and Rebecca Brice.

“As head coach, I oversee all the coaching, and in particular work with the members, from 15 years and up, who want to make a career of athletics. However, my main goal is to help create pathways for our youth.”

For Mick and his wife Val, (recently elected to the Queensland Board of Directors for Queensland Little Athletic), it is also a way of life, for both have been involved in leadership roles in the club for many years.

At the recent Australian All Schools Championships held in Canberra the Noosa team came home with three silver medals in the individual events and gold, silver and a bronze in relays. “ With this years Noosa Surf Club, Noosa Gift, being rated the best ever, and the results from the Canberra Australian Titles, many people in our Little Athletics club must be doing a lot of things right; a great team effort,” said Ian Smith.

“The reason for this is that I won the sprint,” he said laughing.

“And my prize was an esky and believe it or not a toaster; a toaster for winning the sprint. I just couldn’t believe it.

“Then on top of it all I had pulled my hamstring. I was due to travel back south so I had to drive with a leg that was virtually stiff; all for the sake of running in a country gift.”

Back down south he obtained work at Nambour, and also renewed his Southport Surf Club membership.

To fulfil his patrol and training obligations Ian travelled (via Skinners Bus Service) back and forth on the weekends. A massive commitment.

“But that’s what you did in those days,” he said.

Working in Nambour he occasionally visited Noosa Surf Club and became great friends with the beach team. After representing Southport at a Maroochydore carnival he transferred to the Noosa Club and it was here that that he met a club mate named Michelle Pam, who was later to become his wife and mother of three beautiful children.

“In 1993/4 season I held the position of secretary in the surf club,” Michelle said.

“Also about this time the club was forming a six-person Rescue and Resuscitation team. As Ian and I were in a relationship, we put up our hands, joined together and competed at carnivals; so I guess we have been a fair dinkum team ever since. Lifesaving

Young Guns arrrrrrrr firing THE Noosa Pirate Young Guns are back and they need the support of the local community to help the program take flight.

Now in its second year, the program has come from a significant reduction in the participation rates of youths in the 13 to 17 age group, not only in rugby league, but sports in general.

The Noosa Pirates Young Guns program hopes to provide resources and support for young men during what is a time of significant personal growth and development, as well as help the participants aim high and achieve their personal goals.

The program isn’t a representative team, but is there to expose participants to a variety of training to not only improve their rugby league skill set but to also improve their general level of health and well-being.

The training includes beach sessions, weights, boxing, education in diet, leadership development, as well as discussions around the effects of drugs and alcohol.

Program co-ordinator Tony Rutledge said the aim of the program was to bring together a group of boys from a range of ages.

“The program aims to not only improve their footy skills but more importantly create a long-lasting bond so they can look out for each other long after their footy career is over, but hopefully have some great memories to share many years from now,” he said.

Tony said the program focused on four key qualities; respect, loyalty, teamwork and mateship.

But to bring back respect, loyalty, teamwork and mateship, the Noosa Pirates Young Guns need to help of the community.

MP shares broadcast skills

By Jolene Ogle MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes has just returned from a four-day visit to Mauritius to help the National Assembly set up their first live transmission of a political sitting.

Previously, Mauritius media and citizens had only Hansard transcripts to rely on. Now, the National Assembly room has been equipped with six cameras, so all sittings can be streamed live online in broadcast quality for local media outlets and citizens.

Mr Elmes said he was not sure why he was chosen to represent the government in the Technical Assistance Program, but was pleased to be able to offer his knowledge and experience in broadcasting.

Mr Elmes conducted three lectures over two days; two to National Assembly members and a special lecture for media outlets

and journalists who would be accessing the streamed recordings.

On the third day, Mr Elmes was on-hand to experience the first live stream of the Mauritius National Assembly on Thursday 15 December.

“The National Assembly is a lot like Queensland’s Parliament,” Mr Elmes said. “They have 70 members, we have 89. They have one house, same as Queensland.

And their assembly room is setout very similar to Queensland’s parliamentary room. Their system is the Westminister system with a twist, just like us.”

Mr Elmes said the visit to Mauritius was wonderful and a great honour to help set-up the live streaming service.

“Mauritius is a well-ordered, harmonious and inclusive society,” Mr Elmes said. “The people are Mauritius’ best asset.”

Mr Elmes said the National Assembly in Mauritius is very similar to Queensland Parliament.

Funding boost for programs

The ancient Doonan tree.

Grand old tree inspires workshops AN ancient Doonan tree, blown down in a storm, has provided the inspiration for coming workshops at Noosa Regional Gallery.

Artist Anne Harris will guide participants as they imagine the ancient tree’s story and tell it through printmaking, rubbings and sketches.

There are workshops for both children and adults, and Ms Harris will have salvaged limbs from the

fallen tree on hand at each workshop.

Ms Harris said she hoped these would help inspire a sense of wonder about the grand old tree, and others all around us.

“This ancient tree blew down in a storm, and our artistic exploration will be one of celebration and respect,” Ms Harris said.

NOOSA not-for-profit groups will share in more than $80,000 of funding this Christmas, thanks to grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Member for Noosa Glen Elmes was proud to announce five local groups had been successful in their applications for funding in the 90th round of funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

The RSPCA Eumundi Wildlife Centre will receive $31,818.18 to purchase a vehicle, the Tewantin Noosa Meals on Wheels will benefit from $16,363.64 to help upgrade facilities, the Noosa District Community FM Radio will get $8789.74 towards facility upgrades and equipment, the Noosa Photographic Society Inc gets $6222.16 to purchase equipment and Noosacare Inc will receive $3590.00 to purchase life-saving defibrillators.

“The Gambling Community Benefit Fund is a fantastic mechanism to reinvest state taxes into grassroot programs and not-for-profit organisations that make a huge difference to our local community,” Mr Elmes said.

“Whether it is to purchase much-needed equipment or conduct important renovations, without these grants many of these important volunteer organisations would simply be unable to do what they do, and would leave vulnerable groups, both human, flora and fauna at risk.

“Applying for State Government grants is no mean feat, it is time consuming and may take many attempts to succeed.”

Mr Elmes said he was excited to announce the new on-line portal had gone live which would not only reduce the time it took and the overall complexity of the application process, but now included video tutorials.

Keep furry and oh so cool WITH summer fast approaching, Petbarn Noosa is reminding residents to take the right steps to protect their furry and feathered friends from the heat.

Petbarn Noosa store manager Matt Weier said it was important to keep pets cool in the summer and warned of the serious health concerns that can develop if pets are left in the heat.

“Summer is a great time for pets, with walks in the park and on the beach ideal, however the harsh summer heat can prove to be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of our furry friends if pet owners aren’t prepared,” he said.

“Just like us, household pets including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and ferrets are at risk of developing heatstroke and dehydration if their temperature is not monitored and they don’t stay hydrated.”

While keeping your pet away from the summer heat isn’t always easy, especially with Australia’s hot climate, there are some simple ways to help keep pets safe in summer: 1. Keep hydrated - Ensure your furry friend has constant access to multiple bowls of fresh water and a cool shady area to sit down, both inside and outside. On extra hot days, pop a couple of ice cubes into their bowl or freeze half of the bowl over-

night to keep the water cooler for longer.

2. Avoid the hottest parts of the day - While exercise is important to keep you pet happy and healthy, walk your pet either early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperature is lower. Be wary of exercising your pet on roads and pavements on really sunny days as the hot surface can damage paws.

3. Stay shaded - Bird and fish owners are advised to ensure their pets are in a cool shady place away from direct sunlight on hot days.

Spray bottles and bird baths can also help keep birds nice and cool.

4. Maintain your pet’s coat Booking your furry friend in for a groom at the beginning of summer is a simple way to help them beat the heat and reduce their temperature, especially if they have long thick hair.

Like humans, dogs are also susceptible to sunburn, so it’s a good idea to pick up some pet friendly sunscreen to help keep their skin safe too.

5. Look out for signs of heatstroke - Heat stress can affect pets very quickly, therefore it’s important to keep an eye out for the early signs of heatstroke including excessive panting, lethargy, salivation and vomiting.

If you are concerned about your pet’s wellbeing, Petbarn recommends speaking to your vet immediately.

Help your pets keep cool this summer.

Recycling made easy in workshops NOOSA Council discovered a number of common recycling misconceptions at the recycling workshops it held during National Recycling Week.

Noosa Councillor Joe Jurisevic said more than 420 residents attended workshops and information sessions held throughout Noosa during Recycling Week.

“It was encouraging to see so many people keen to learn more about recycling,” he said.

“The workshops highlighted how many people are unaware of the number of everyday items that can be recycled in their yellow-lidded recycle bin. As recycling techniques change, things that once weren’t recyclable, can now be recycled.”

Cr Jurisevic urged residents to download a copy of Council’s A-Z Guide to Recycling to keep up-to-date on what can and can’t be recycled.

Council’s Waste Education officer Emma Menzies said that aerosol cans topped the list of items people did not know could be recycled.

“Many attendees were also not aware that pizza boxes, plastic take-away containers and tetra packs could be recycled,” she said.

“They were also surprised that aluminium foil could be recycled. Ideally it should be clean and scrunched into a ball prior to disposing.”

Market is a complex, mixed bag CoreLogic head of real estate market research Tim Lawless has summed up the 2016 year as diverse and complex.

In his annual report, Mr Lawless said he described the market as diverse because conditions have been radically different from region to region.

“At one end of the spectrum we have Sydney and Melbourne where dwelling values are rising at more than 10 per cent per annum, while in Perth, values continue to trend lower,” he said.

“In Canberra and Hobart, the pace of capital gains has accelerated with both cities seeing annual capital gains rise higher than eight per cent over the past 12 months.

“Brisbane and Adelaide have shown more sustainable growth with values tracking four to five per cent higher over the year.”

When it comes to regional markets, Mr Lawless said the lifestyle and tourism-centric areas recorded an improvement in buyer demand which has pushed prices higher, while markets related to the resources sector remained soft and are likely approaching the bottom

Blue Sky Private Real Estate director Stuart Lockhart said national investment in retirement villages was not keeping up with our ageing population. Australians aged over 65 are projected to make up 20 per cent of the population by 2050.

The Maroochydore village will be the second retirement living project delivered by Aura and Blue Sky Alternative Investments following the $130 million Kingsford Terrace development underway in Corinda, Brisbane.

“Queensland is a popular retirement choice, and currently has around 28,000 ILUs. A conservative estimate is that by 2050, we will need more than four times the current supply,” Mr Lockhart said.

Blue Sky, which bought 50 per cent of Aura in September 2016, will develop the project through its Private Real Estate arm, while Aura will manage it.

Mr Lockhard said the Maroochydore development is not only a secure investment in the future of aged living, but also contributes to ensuring highquality retirement options are open to Queenslanders when the time comes to downsize.

The development is set to be completed by the end of 2019 at the former site of the Swan Bowls Club on Anzac Avenue and will include 116 independent living units consisting mainly of two and three bedroom residences, as well as extensive communal facilities.

By Hollie Harris ON 7 May, 1995, Noosa Community Radio broadcast its very first program from an old Queenslander in Tewantin where they remained for some years until moving to the new premises beside The J in Noosa Junction.

A lot of airwaves have passed since then but on Thursday 7 May,

2015, the 20th anniversary of the station celebrated ‘on-air’ with presenters and members, past and present, special programs and a prize draw for listeners.

Noosa FM provides a wealth of music across the Sunshine Coast and into the hinterland - from just south of Gympie down to Steve Erwin Way. Unlike some other stations, Noosa FM presenters are able to choose

from a huge variety of music genres so every program has its own flavour.

Among them, there are daily Morning Magazine programs dealing with local issues, current affairs and reflecting our local Noosa Council’s issues.

Afternoons have programs reflecting women’s interest, Breakfast gets everyone up and about with chitchat and lively music, Drive cruises

everyone home with some up-beat music and Lunch features a range of blues and jazz.

Light up the night WITH thousands of visitors getting set to visit Noosa for the summer season, holiday-makers will have another wonderful reason to love Noosa this year when the skies light up in three great locations with fireworks for New Year’s Eve. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham reveals some of the best vantage points for visitors to welcome in the New Year.

“From family-friendly viewing on Noosa Main Beach, along the Noosa foreshore in Noosaville and at the Noosa Marina in Tewantin,” he said.

“New Year’s Eve is always a busy time in Noosa and it is great news that

there will be fireworks in three great locations.

“Noosa Main Beach will have fireworks at 9pm, the Noosa River in Noosaville will also have a display at 9pm and the Noosa Marina in Tewantin will have a laser light show followed by fireworks at 9pm and also at midnight.”

Hasting Street Association president Shane Harvey said Hastings Street is a very popular destination for New Year’s Eve celebrations and the association is delighted to announce for the first time in more than 15 years, that there will again be fireworks off Noosa Main Beach.

“To welcome 2017 with a bang, our

Hastings Street businesses have all come together to present an 8 minute long firework show at 9pm that will be an exciting family-friendly celebration for our visitors and our Noosa locals,” he said.

Noosaville Business Association president Jim Lloyd said the Gympie Terrace foreshore was a very popular family spot on New Year’s Eve, so the association has arranged to make the evening more exciting with fireworks.

“Noosa River Fire presented by Harvey Norman Noosa, Noosaville Business Association and SEA FM will be visible from the entire foreshore of the river,” he said.

Noosa Marina general manager Warren Smith says this New Year’s Eve is going to be bigger and better than ever at the Noosa Marina.

“We are introducing a laser light show that will precede the fireworks at both 9pm and also at midnight. We look forward to welcoming visitors and locals to the Noosa Marina,” he said.

Firework locations are Noosa Main Beach Groyne at 9pm, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, on the river near Thomas Street at 9pm and Noosa Marina, Parkyn Court, Tewantin at 9pm and midnight including laser light shows.

Music, magic and Aussie pride THE much-loved Australia Day festival is back and the 2017 event promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The family fun day will be held on Thursday 26 January and will feature live music, kids’ entertainment and plenty of food stalls to suit all tastes including the Rotary Big Breakfast from 7am.

Sofitel’s Noosa Beach House restaurant head chef Woody Theruerl will hold cooking demonstrations of some great Aussie favourites with a simple gourmet twist.

Nickleby the magician will be onstage and roaming among the crowd throughout the day performing magic tricks, while Twisted Mr will create balloon animals

and Luke’s Reptile Kingdom will have interactive shows for animal lovers.

There will also be prizes for the best Aussie outfit on the day and the CWA cake stall will be back.

The live music will run from 8.30am to 3.15pm and includes acts such as Mark Moroney, Andrea Kirwin, Sharon Brooks and her six-piece band Pocket Love, with Ryan Giles as the headline act.

Event organisers have everyone “covered” this year with a huge marquee making the event an allweather festival.

"Five years ago when we moved from Italy, shipping all our gelateria equipment from Italy, our goal was to open an authentic Italian 'gelateria' with our traditional recipes utilising premium ingredients so people would taste the difference," Paolo explained.

The certified organic beans are roasted on demand in Queensland, and are grown in volcanic soils in Mexico at an altitude of more than 1800m above sea level. For the coffee industry, high-altitude coffee beans are commonly considered among the finest quality.

“The roasting type is Viennese at 230-celcius, which gives a mid to dark brown bean with a light surface oil, and a down-played acidity,” Holly explained.

“If you pass by our cafe at any given time, you will hear the Italians which are now living here in Noosa having their 'coffee pit-stop' - a quick espresso, and little chat with Paolo.”

“The roast brims with plum, caramel and chocolate notes producing a rich amber crema, so it’s perfect taken as an espresso, but importantly the coffee shot doesn’t get ‘lost’ when married with steamed milk for your piccolo, flat white or cappuccino.”

Gelato Classico is the only cafe in the Noosa area serving O Espresso Organic, a boutique Australian-owned coffee brand they’ve believed in since they opened. The choice has paid off as since they opened any new customer looking for coffee with a rich body and strong aroma has become a regular follower.

The hurts that linger on BAD sunburn in childhood increases your risk of developing potentially deadly melanoma, prompting warnings for Noosa residents to ensure sunburn isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t their summer holiday souvenir. Melanoma Institute Australia CEO Carole Renouf has issued the reminder as the festive season draws closer and Noosa families prepare to embark on their annual summer holidays.

"The summer holidays in Australia are renowned for families enjoying long playful days in the sun, surf and sand," Ms Renouf said.

"While summer holidays are the perfect time to reconnect with family and friends and recharge after a busy year, they are also the prime time for severe sunburn.

"In addition to being painful, sunburn can have a far more harmful impact. Intense, intermittent exposure leading to sunburn at a young age significantly increases your risk of developing melanoma in the future," she said.

Melanoma is the most common cancer affecting 15-39 year-old Australians and the leading cause of cancer death in 20-39 year-olds. The incidence of melanoma in the over-60s is also high, a legacy of sun-damage from decades ago.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is damaging to skin cells as it causes mutations in DNA and it also impairs the immune systemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to repair. Intense, intermittent sun exposure leading to sunburn - particu-

larly in the years prior to puberty - is the most dangerous. Melanoma can develop decades after such exposure.

The real tragedy of melanoma is that it is largely preventable. Sunscreen acts as a barrier, reducing the amount of UV radiation that reaches cells. However, the active ingredients in sunscreen break down quickly, meaning a single application in the morning will not last the whole day.

It needs to be reapplied at least every two hours and it needs to be SPF 50plus.

"People relaxing on holidays tend to get sun-safe before they head out in the morning, but then get caught up in the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities and forget the basics like covering up and staying out of the sun during hottest part of the day," Ms Renouf said.

"I urge Noosa holiday-makers to not become complacent and actively take steps to help protect against the serious risks posed by just one bad case of sunburn, particularly to children and adolescents.

"And when you arrive home is a perfect time to check your skin for any changes. You need to get to know the skin youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in and ask family and friends to check places you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t easily see.

"There are far better souvenirs to bring back from a summer holiday than a bad sunburn, which has the potential for serious ramifications," she said.

FISHING - a great way to bring in the New Year!

With New Year fast approaching and Christmas behind us a lot of families plan their holidays that bit later through the summer holidays to try and beat the crowds. Camping is a great - and more economical way of having a break and Noosa’s North Shore has to be one of the best camping areas on the coast.

With some great camping areas right on the water the kids can play in the dunes, swim build sand castle and, of course, fish.

North Shore has an abundance of kid-friendly fish on offer with dart and whiting at the top of the list. These fish are quite often only a short cast making it easy for the kids to have a go.

Bait is all important and if you can get some freshly pulled sand worm these are the perfect bait.

Small flesh baits are also good on the dart, so small fresh mullet strips will also entice a bite.

For the more mature anglers a night fish has to be on the cards and with some monster tailor taken

over the last month, as well as the odd larger jew, it’s time to rig up the big surf rod. Again fresh mullet is a great bait as well as good quality pilchard baits on ganged hooks.

For those of you who enjoy the comforts of home and are staying in one of the many holiday units that Noosa has to offer, the Noosa River is a great option.

For those of you who are land based the river mouth has some great fish on offer, bream trevally tailor jack and jewies are all there to tangle with.

Fishing the incoming tide is always a good option as well as good quality baits and lures.

This area is great for soft plastics anglers with so many fish on offer.

Small fish or prawn profiles seem to be the best with a jig head just heavy enough to get you to the bottom.

If the trevally and tailor are on, then casting and retrieving at speed can also produce results.

For those of you with a boat, Noosa Sound offer a great many options including Woods Bays, both the Sheraton and Munna bridges, and the many pontoons and jetties that line the waterway. These are

great habitat for jacks, trevally and large bream.

You can also head upstream and fish the deeper sections of the river along the ski runs and between the lakes, paddle vibes and suspending diving lures can work well around these areas.

On the offshore scene, if the weather plays the game the pelagics will be in full swing. This is that great time of the year where some big schools of both spotted and spanish mackerel, wahoo and tuna arrive on our coast.

The best way to tangle with the pelagics is to keep a close eye out for bird activity, bird diving and feeding from the surface is a dead giveaway that the pelagics are feeding on those same bait fish from underneath.

Matching the hatch is the key, so getting an idea of the size of bait and then matching that with a metal slug. I love to use micro jigs as they tend to fall through the schools more horizontally, thus looking like an injured bait fish and an easy meal for a hungry pelagic.

WHEN BBL Champions Brisbane Lions took on their Noosa namesake in Saturday’s preseason match at Girraween, there wasn’t a lot more than pride on the line.

However, that didn’t stop players from demonstrating some high level skills to impress both the crowd and their coaches.

No doubt hours of backyard football led to the obvious understanding between Noosa brothers Chris and Andre Jancevski. It was the combination of left back Chris to left wing Andre that led to a newcomer Billy Bayldon’s goal for Noosa in only the fifth minute of the game.

While Noosa had the better of the opening quarter the Brisbane team was tenacious with quality across the paddock and speed to burn in key positions.

Noosa’s goalkeeper Sam Nickolls had his work cut out for him repelling numerous Brisbane forays into the red zone.

There was little he could do though to stop the equaliser in the 35th minute.

Noosa’s defence was unable to clear a well-placed corner and the ball came off a head to the foot of the Brisbane forward whose volley sailed into the top right of the net.

With the benefit of a 20knot wind Noosa had numerous promising ‘through ball’ opportunities in the second half. However, these chances were consistently snuffed out

After repelling a few oneon-one challenges in their own goal square the home team had a chance to seal a victory in the 80th minute when the ball was deflected, not once, but twice, off the woodwork.

Initially hitting the left post, then struck into the cross bar and then rebounding into the lunging head of golden boot Mathew Thompson.

With the Brisbane keeper hopelessly out of position after the pin ball like sequence of events Thompson only had to contend with the cross wind. However, he was unable to repeat the end phase heroics

of the regular season in December with the weather this time being sufficient to keep the second half scoreless.

The Noosa side can take heart from the result, managing a draw against the BBL grand final winners with many of this season’s best players warming the bench to allow coach Kevin Aherne-Evans to cast his eye over some of the newcomers.

Keeping their home game unbeaten streak going in 2016 Aaron Waters’ determined individual goal was enough for the Noosa Reserve Grade to take out the honours against the Brisbane side earlier in the day.

The ghosts of New Years Eves past Life of

SO what are you doing this New Year’s Eve? Me? Us? Oh, probably nothing.

It’s been a long time since I felt any kind of compunction to head out on the busiest night of the year, pay double what you normally would to cover the staff loadings, get terribly twisted, not be able to get a cab home and be wearing a hangover the size of Texas to usher in the new year.

Ah, no thanks. I’ll just watch the early fireworks on the telly and hit the hay and pray for surf.

But there was a time... in fact there have been a few awfully memorable or memorably awful NYE celebrations that spring to mind.

One occurred at the Hastings Street establishment once known as Palmer’s, where in the safe hands of Leonie and Stef, many a festivity has occurred, beginning, for me, way along the sands of time, for my 40th birthday, back when we thought 40 was old.

The NYE I’m recalling can’t have been many years after that. We ate and drank and toasted the best of the best, and when we couldn’t get a taxi to take us to Sunshine Beach, I was young, dumb and drunk enough to think we could walk home through the park.

And my bride was young, dumb and drunk enough to agree!

I’m not sure if we even made it to the park gates, but either somewhere along the Coast Track or else along the Little Cove boardwalk, we encountered a koala in something of a party mood.

The details surrounding this incident are somewhat blurry, but I will swear to this until the day I die, and perhaps even beyond. I held out the hand of friendship and the koala took it. We stood there in the moonlight, shaking paws and sizing each other up until my wife destroyed the intimacy of the moment by shrieking that I was an idiot and running for the relative safety of the park gates, or perhaps the bright lights of Hastings Street.

God knows how she would have got on as Mrs David Attenborough.

Anyway, that was a good New Year’s Eve, and this was another. (Don’t worry, won’t keep you long. There haven’t been many.)

In the 1980s and early ‘90s, when the kids were still young enough to want to spend holidays with us, we used to camp far from the madding crowd on a friend’s beachside property on the old rutile mining road that runs south of Crescent Head to the north shore of the Hastings River.

There were usually a dozen or 20 of us, old mates from all over who loved to surf and fish and talk nonsense by the camp fire, and on New Year’s Eve that number would swell to double as neighbours from adjoining spreads and old salts from here and there joined the party.

This particular year the numbers doubled again when we had a morning surf at Point Plomer and ran into the late and sorely missed Lester Brien, a great surfer from Freshwater and solicitor to the stars. Lester had just started up a new business with his son Garth, taking backpackers on week-long surf safaris from Sydney to Byron in a garish painted bus. Well, of course, they all had to come to The Banksias for the party.

Backpacking was a fairly new phenomenon at that stage, but they seemed like decent kids who were probably getting a fantastic life education on the road, which was why we didn’t tell them it was a cross-dressing party. They’d find out soon enough and it would be water off a duck’s back, so to speak.

When the sun got low we all hived off to our own campsites to tog or frock up. I chose a fetching little black off-the-shoulder number of my wife’s, which looked stunning with pendant earrings and a red bandana. She looked suitably butch in a pair of my boardies and a dress shirt.

So off we went to the big campfire to eat, drink and be merry. As the night began to fire up, I could see that the backpackers were only partially amused by the antics of these decidedly middle-aged people dressed as their significant other. They weren’t quite sure about us.

Their concerns grew when down the track from Crescent rolled a beaten-up old Land-

It was a moment the backpackers apparently didn’t want to share. They skulked off into the shadows with their beers, only to reappear much later when the guitars and drums started up.

But for me it was a memorable New Year’s Eve. And I have a blurry old picture that will never let me forget it.

It will be eight days of pure stoke and live entertainment at the 26th annual Festival of Surfing.

Jam-packed action in surf THE Laguna Real Estate Festival of Surfing is shaping up to be as entertaining on the sand as it will be in the waves for the event’s 26th annual celebration of surf culture.

Each year, the festival buzzes well beyond sunset on the shores of Laguna Bay as competitors, visitors and the general public mingle, the sand between their toes and a cold drink in hand, while musical and cinematic entertainment wraps up each day of surfing action.

The 2017 festival will be no exception, with a quiver of excellent acts already locked in.

Returning to the festival as a headliner, rockabilly rapscallion Pat Capocci and his band will be making waves, bringing their rock-n-roll licks to the festival’s grand closing party on March 11.

Pat and crew meld blues, swing, jazz and country in a rockabilly salad that has seen them gain renown worldwide.

Hitting the major cities of the East Coast after a headlining tour of Europe, Pat joins the festival on the tail end of frenetic and greatly successful year, and we’re thrilled to have him back.

Presented by Global Surf Industries and Screen Queensland, the Life is Better When You Surf film festival will feature an international collection of short films to inspire and entertain, the world premiere of Harrison Roach’s new Hawaiian film, and workshops with leading film-makers, including the legendary Jack McCoy.
