Mick’s tools nicked By Aneeka Simonis A FORMER serviceman who volunteers time to play Santa over the Christmas period has found himself victim to a callous, debilitating crime days out from the big day. Mick Page, a Pakenham CFA volunteer who was honoured with the National Medal earlier this year, had his work trailer stolen from his home on Saturday 17 December. More than a dozen expensive electric tools and hand tools were stolen from the trailer, found dumped in vacant Solid Drive land not long after it was pinched. Mick, 54, has to work over the Christmas break, and is now in the unenviable position of having to quickly replace all of his stolen tools to get on with his job. “It's frustrating ... how can they do this a week before Christmas?” Mick said. Mick, who also served 10 years in the navy, gets dressed up in Santa’s big red suit and hops onto Pakenham’s fire truck to spread cheer throughout the community over the Christmas period. In fact, he was out spreading some Christmas cheer when his trailer was stolen. A neighbour told Mick they called Crime Stoppers to report the crime, but police were not available to come down. “We live in a really quiet court. No one comes down here. The neighbours are shocked,” he said. The trailer was stolen from Mick’s Adam Court, Pakenham home, at 1.17am on Saturday 17 December. It was found dumped on the vacant block off Pakenham Road, missing all of Mick’s expensive tools including his cordless drills, cordless grinder, vacuum blower and nail gun. Mick was awarded the National Medal after 20 years’ service with the CFA and 10 years’ service in the navy at a presentation in Pakenham in October this year. He said the crime won’t stifle his Christmas spirit, with several more Santa runs pencilled in to his schedule. Man charged with drug offences A PAKENHAM man was charged with drug and weapons offences following a search warrant executed by police last week. Several others are likely to be charged on summons with drug offences. On Friday 16 December, police swooped on a Howie Road, Pakenham, home after securing a search warrant. They charged a 38-year-old Pakenham man with possession of amphetamines and possessing a firearm as a prohibited person. He was bailed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Thursday 22 December. Police said others were interviewed and will likely be charged on drug offences.

More ambos for town By Aneeka Simonis PAKENHAM is due to get a second ambulance station, bringing more paramedics to the fast-growing suburb. The location of the new station is yet to be announced. Minister for Suburban Development Lily D’Ambrosio said $1.1 million has been allocated to purchase land for the state-of-the-art station. It was put to Ms D’Ambrosio that
vacant land next in Pakenham’s emergency services hub on the Princes Highway would be a suitable site for the town’s second ambulance station. She did not rule out the option, but said those decisions would be made by Minister for Ambulance Services Jill Hennessy. The site is expected to be identified in the next 12 months, and construction would begin soon after. Pakenham’s existing ambulance sta-
tion in Main Street is currently under construction. The station’s 34 ambos are part way through phase 2 of the $1.4 million relocation project, to upgrade the site in operation since the late 1960s. The station is serviced by two 24/7 ambulances. Ambulance Victoria Regional Director Cath Anderson said the new station in Pakenham would improve response times.
In 2015-’16, paramedics got to 62.3 per cent of Code 1 call-outs in under the 15-minute benchmark time period. Similar response time averages were recorded in 2014-’15. Five other stations will be built under the $8.5 million Growth Areas Infrastructure Contributions (GAIC) fund. Mernda, Taylors Lakes, Wyndham Vale, Melton and Craigieburn will also get new ambulance stations under the growth funding.
POLICE are investigating a bizarre assault in the doorway of a Pakenham victim’s home. At about 5.25pm on Sunday 18 December, a 53-year-old Pakenham man responded to knocking at his Naples Way front door. He was met by a Pacific Islander male aged in his 20s, who told the victim “I have a message for you” before punching the victim in the head. Police said the offender did not try to get into the Pakenham man’s house, instead he walked back to a readied getaway car and drove away. Police said the offender was wearing a black hoodie, and was seen leaving the scene in a silver Mazda. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Disabled parking dispute By Aneeka Simonis AN ONGOING dispute about disabled parking at a Pakenham childcare centre has ended in one parent reportedly abusing another in front of children. A senior staff member at Time 4 Tots in Pakenham has been the subject of ongoing frustration among parents for allegedly parking in a disabled car spot without the proper permits. Parents said they had raised the issue with management in the past, and that nothing had been done as it was a private car park. But an aggressive outburst involving two parents has jolted the
centre into action. On Friday 9 December, a parent with a legitimate disabled parking permit was forced to double park behind a staff member using the disabled spot without a permit. Her car blocked another parent’s in, and when she emerged from the centre with her child to leave, an argument broke out. The abusive father’s child was also present. The parent wrote to Time 4 Tots, detailing the incident. She claimed the angry father told her she was a “horrible parent” and threatened to reverse into her car. “This man has belittled myself
and my family and intimated me in front of my daughter who attends kinder with his son,” she said. “This behaviour is not acceptable. “No parent deserves to feel this way in front of her child, and no child deserves to see their parent abused in this manner ... nor does the other child deserve to see their father disrespect another person in this manner.” She urged the centre to make sure the parking spot was available to legitimate permit holders. Time 4 Tots’ Tad Merry said the centre was aware of the incident, and had advised staff would be strictly forbidden from parking in the disabled spot without the correct permits.
“We have issued a notice to all staff in respect to parking, in particular noting that parking in the disabled areas without an appropriate permit is strictly forbidden,” he said. “We will also be issuing a notice to all families on Monday reflecting the same message with regards to the disabled parking spaces, including that we understand that parking can be a challenge with two active business in the complex and encourage all of our families to show each other the appropriate respect when entering and leaving the car park area.” The centre shares a car park with a bulk-billing medical centre, St Antony Medical Centre and Dental Clinic.

Eggs smashed and the pizza till emptied By Alana Mitchelson A PAKENHAM pizza shop was broken into overnight after a group of offenders hurled eggs at its windows. Four offenders threw eggs at the shop front windows along Cameron Way, off Racecourse Road, before burgling Mumma G’s Pizza, about 11.45pm on Thursday 15 December. A nearby shop owner told the Gazette he counted five dozen egg cartons squashed on the pavement when he arrived at work on Friday morning. Mumma G’s Pizza shop owner Chris Iskaf said an amount of money had been stolen from the till. “We found a nice big pile of eggs in the middle of our store this morning,” he said. “They threw all these egg shells at the windows before smashing through the door, and then they smashed eggs inside, so I’d assume they were young. “But they were smart. They knew what they were doing because they were wearing gloves.” A female, described as having a small build, entered the premises by smashing the front glass door and exited via the back door. It is understood the offenders also attempted to break into a few surrounding stores but they were unsuccessful. Police were investigating the incident and were in the process of reviewing CCTV footage that captured the burglary. Mr Iskaf said he and his staff had been sweeping up egg shells and glass all morning. After clearing the mess, the owners opened the pizza shop about noon Friday for business as usual. "We have such an amazing community here and they have rallied behind us 150 per cent after what happened to us, we just cannot believe it," Mr Iskaf's wife Georgina said. "We had one of the busiest nights on Friday since we started trading and we feel like we owe it all to the community, especially the people who are part of the Pakenham Pay It Forward Facebook page. "We have been involved with the page for just over a year now, offering meals for families every fortnight, but never could we have imagined the kind of support we've received from them over the past few days. for close to a decade. Yet he said he and neighbouring residents were “ill prepared” for the final act due to Casey delaying its release of the full details of its plans. It was not until days before the hearing that Mr Foy learnt of the plotted destruction of the house, garden and lake. Had they known of the scale of the project, more neighbours would have objected, Mr Foy said.

They’re things I should have told the (panel) hearing.” Casey statutory planning manager Duncan Turner said publicly exhibited information had included reference to “the future expansion of district leisure and sporting facilities”, as well as the shared user path link. were notified of the amendment’s exhibition in writing, Mr Turner said. From legal advice, Mr Foy believes there’s no point trying to appeal the panel decision if it goes against him. Appeals rarely win, he was told. He has no plans of where to move instead. Despite the lawful compensation he’d receive, no place would replicate his home. “Besides, I haven’t lost this battle yet.”

COULD there be a Christmas miracle in store for Narre Warren North’s John Foy? In days, Planning Panels Victoria member Con Tsotsoros is expected to rule on whether Casey Council can compulsorily acquire Mr Foy’s 34acre home, garden and habitat lake for a three-pitch soccer reserve. Mr Foy, 78, objects to the proposal - not least the access road that would plough through his house, hundreds of native plantings and the sanctuary for all sorts of wildlife that he’s created over the past 35 years. He wishes that Mr Tsotsoros - who held the one-day hearing at Casey Civic Centre on 1 December - had ventured up the road to see the persuasive splendours of the property first-hand. “How can you make a decision without visiting the property, to see the work that I’ve done? “I think it’s a terrible waste of a good house, for a start.” Besides, he lists several varieties of frogs and water birds, including the scarse freckled duck and the shoveller that have lived here. This spring, Pacific Black ducks raised offspring in nesting boxes on the lake’s island and venture via Mr Foy’s network of frog ponds to Eumemmerring Creek. Scores of ibis at a time, gang gang cockatoos, kangaroos, honey-eaters, robin red-breasts, blue wreens and copperhead snakes have been sighted since Mr Foy transformed bare paddocks and a tiny billabong. Mr Foy is pretty happy with his handiwork, though he wishes he made the lake even larger. “It’s the only thing I wished I had have done.” Casey council has justified the

COLES stores in the Cranbourne area will be fast-tracking the Christmas shopping experience by opening 30 extra checkouts every single day up to Christmas Day. The supermarket will be providing 290 extra shifts to their staff in the days before Christmas so shoppers have access to registers on the

SAFETY, inclusivity and thriving activity; these are what the people of Casey want according to the results of the massive Casey Next survey conducted by council. In the largest community engagement survey undertaken by the City of Casey Council, Casey Next asked more than 3600 Casey residents ‘What’s next for the City of Casey?’ The survey, conducted between July and September this year, aimed to gauge what residents wanted for the rapidly expanding area and the results have been released. According to the survey, the residents and people of Casey had a safer community at the top of their priorities. The survey showed that all age groups had safety as the most important area of improvement across the municipality, with 29 to 58-year-olds the most concerned. Results showed people want improvements to Casey that would see more police on the streets and harsher penalties for vandalism and graffiti. People also called for more CCTV cameras in public spaces, more opportunities for work or learning for vulnerable groups in the community, cleaner streets, and more neighbourhood watch groups. An inclusive place was the second highest recurring theme in the survey responses and showed to be particularly important to people aged 19 to 28 and 59 to 68. Survey responses showed that people in Casey want to see more inclusivity across a range of diversity groups including age, sexuality, religion, race, ethnicity, income and ability.

Soccer stars share mad skills By Cam Lucadou-Wells SOME of Brazil’s finest soccer players shared their immense skills and exuberance in a sports clinic at Maranatha Christian School, Doveton. As part of the Tour of Hope, former World Cup members such as Mineiro, Elivelton, Paulo Sergio, Fabio, Felipe, Lamartine and Robert told students
what it was like to be idolised as national heroes. The players performed soccer tricks, posed for photos and autographs, much to the awe of staff and students, Maranatha principal William Jackson said. “It was definitely a day for all to remember and there were many high fives and laughs among staff, students and players.”
LATEST crime statistics show an overall increase of 17 per cent in the number of offences between September 2015 and 2016 across the Casey municipality. The City of Casey saw the largest increase in abduction and related offences and justice procedures. Abduction and related offences are crimes that include abduction, false imprisonment, slavery and sexual servitude or any crime that hinders a person’s personal movement or freedom. From September 2015 to September 2016, the City of Casey saw a 70 per cent increase in these types of crime per 100,000 of the population. With an offender number of 49 over the 12 month period to September 2016, a person is abducted or held against their will in the City of Casey at a rate of almost one a week. Justice procedures includes crimes that hinder the justice system such as escaping from custody, failing to appear in court and resisting or hindering an officer had a 208 per cent increase across the population. Other types of crime that increased in Casey over 12 months are theft by deception, burglary and break and enter, arson, robbery, and homicide and related offences. Statistics from the Crime Statistics Agency of Victoria show that while the City of Casey has had an increase in crime overall, it is not the most crime-ridden area in the state. The top five local government areas for increases in crime over 12 months are Melbourne, Latrobe, Yarra, Horsham, and Greater Dandenong. However, the crime stats do show some areas of crime across Casey have fallen including government regula-
tory offences falling over 60 per cent across the area. Government regulatory offences include crimes related to betting and gaming, liquor and tobacco licensing, pornography and censorship, intellectual property, and prostitution. Another area where crime has fallen in Casey is the cultivation and manufacture of drugs, with a fall of about 50 per cent from September 2015 to 2016. Victoria Police Superintendent for Southern Metro Region Paul Hollowood said the figures reflected the trend in increased police reporting of various types of crime. “Much of the increased offending centres upon vehicle crime such as theft of and theft from vehicles that are primarily used in respect to the commission of secondary crime including robbery, burglary, theft, and arson,” he said. “Much of the assault, abduction, stalking and harassment relate to family violence incidents.” “We’ve had a zero tolerance approach to family violence which is reflected in the rise in justice procedures and breach of orders offences.” Superintendent Hollowood also said the increase in crime figures could also be attributed to the high number of police and more active duties over the last 12 months in Casey. “The increase in recorded crime is also attributable to increased police activity, particularly by our local Criminal Investigation Unit, Divisional Response Unit and the Southern Metro Region Crime Team who are undertaking a broad range of targeted investigations into criminal groups,” he said. Statistics from across the state show that crime committed by youth
offenders under the age of 18 is quite low; this trend reflects trends reported in the News on 8 December. Crime Statistics Agency Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said that the majority of offenders were adults. “In the year to September 2016, only 12 per cent of offenders were aged between 10 and 17, and more than half of all offenders were aged between 18 and 34,” she said. However, Shadow Minister for Police Ed O’Donohue sees the increase in crime in the City of Casey as a direct result of mismanagement by the current premier. “These statistics just confirm what every resident in Casey already knows,” he said. “That our community has become less safe under Daniel Andrews with home invasions, carjackings, drive-by shootings and gangs such as Apex running amok.” Mr O’Donohue called on the Andrews Government to take a tougher stance on crime to prevent the rates climbing any higher. “Under Daniel Andrews the justice system is in crisis due to weak sentencing, watered down bail laws, repeal of move on laws, cuts to frontline police and closure of police stations,” he said. Superintendent Hollowood meanwhile urged people to take care over the Christmas break and warned everyone to ensure their security measures were up to scratch. “The important message is that as we move into the traditional holiday period, unattended houses and businesses can become easy targets for criminals,” he said. “It is important that adequate security precautions are taken if you are away from your vehicle, home or business.”

Christmas feel hits home By Narelle Coulter THE Barlow family from Cockatoo are hoping for a cool Christmas Day, so they can all don their snug, festive-themed jumpers without sweltering. The Christmas mad family are the winners of the Gazette’s festive image competition. Mum Jodie bought the endearing jumpers, reminiscent of a Bridget Jones movie, on Ebay from a seller in England. Husband David, son Brock, 25, and daughter Courtney, 20, are equally keen to be part of the festive fun. Jodie also bought a jumper for Brock’s girlfriend, Emily. The jumpers, adorned with gingerbread men, Christmas trees and presents, will have their first public outing on Christmas Day when the family gathers at Jodie’s sister’s house in Clematis. Last year the Barlows wore “lame” Christmas-themed T-shirts, and Jodie said they were determined to step things up in 2016. “If it’s 40 degrees on Christmas Day, they will be on and off really quickly,” she said, laughing. Around 25 members of Jodie’s family, ranging from four months to 80, will get together on 25 December for a traditional hot lunch including “cooked vegies, cooked meat, ham, turkey and pork“. “We were talking about having salad, but we decided no because that’s not Christmas. I just love the

A PAKENHAM mother of six has been surprised with a portable air-conditioner this Christmas as part of the charitable GiftMas initiative. The 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre nominated Cyndee who has had a very challenging year due to complications from a surgery. She then had further operations prolonging her recovery time; all the while looking after her six children. Christmas came early this year for Cyndee who said the donation not only meant a cool house for the summer months, but a more com-
fortable environment for her to recover properly from her surgeries. “For six children living in a three-bedroom home, the air-conditioner is going to keep us sane this summer,” she said. “Without a car to take the kids to the pool and limited funds to purchase one, it is the ultimate present for my family. “To know we are going to be comfortable during summer is just amazing and both the kids and I will be eternally grateful. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
The 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre general manager Cheryl Daly said it was wonderful to be part of the GiftMas initiative and to see the family supported. “This gift will make a real difference for this deserving family, especially at this time of year,” Ms Daly said. GiftMas would see more than 100 gifts donated to families nationwide with the hope of spreading some Christmas cheer to those most in need this festive season. The air-conditioner was donated by Good Guys Pakenham.

Family’s IVF gift By Cam Lucadou-Wells THERE’S no doubting that chatty 18-month-old Tom looks set to be particularly spoilt this Christmas. After his doting Doveton parents Jo and Ben Coelho tried to start a family for five fretful years, it’s no surprise Tom is going to be showered with gifts. During that uncertain prelude, the mind games were torturous as their friends successfully conceived. Jo and Ben wondered what was “wrong” with them. Why was their much-yearned plan for children so elusive? Now they beam with pride as they speak of their sparky toddler with a love of food, books, the beach, Hey Dougie and the family’s Pug. Ben smilingly speaks of the sleepless nights, teething and the ups and downs of early parenthood.
“It’s all worth it,” he said. Jo adds: “I still can’t believe it.” The Coelho’s saviour was in-vitro fertilisation treatment (IVF), unexpectedly so because they’d assumed it was unaffordably expensive. They warily visited a lowcost, bulk-billing Dandenong IVF clinic, The Fertility Centre. “We heard the ad for it on the radio and it advertised that it was much cheaper,” Ms Coelho said. “But we wondered what’s the quality like?” Upon a visit, they were convinced they were in sure, caring hands and that it was their only chance of becoming parents. Still their estimated odds of success were about one in three. Three of Jo’s eggs were frozen. When they found out the first IVF pregnancy failed, the

couple described it as the worst day of their life. Within three months they tried for a second. During a Bali holiday, Jo felt sick - but it was in fact a good omen. For the first time she was pregnant. The next June, Tom was duly born and welcomed to the world. To the couple’s elation, Jo is now 17 weeks pregnant - due to natural conception. They add that conception was expected to be easier after the first IVF pregnancy. The couple also intend to enact their pledge to use all of their stored eggs, and so fertilise the third egg at some stage. Despite some people “looking down” on IVF babies, Jo says: “It’s just as much a miracle. “It’s the same DNA. It’s that extra help for people to have a family.”

Season for family minus the gifts By Cam Lucadou-Wells FOR the Mohammads, Christmas means a time for family - barbecues in the park and watching fireworks even if there are no exchanges of gifts. Ismail, his wife Jawahir and his three children, as Afghan Hazaras, more closely observe Eid and Nawruz celebrations during other times of the year. “We believe that Eid and Nawruz are our Christmas,” Ismail says. “It is a time for feeling happy with others.”
During the jollities, special cakes are prepared and family members host one another in their homes. When Ismail first arrived in Sydney in 2012, Christmas with families flocking towards the beach - was a new experience. He quickly realised it was a human celebration, a chance to appreciate family and friends. On Christmas Eve, the family huddle together watching fireworks outside the famous carols concert at Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
The next day, they’ll meet other families for a picnic and barbecue. His daughter Benazir, 11, said it seemed similar to Eid - which marks the end of the Muslim tradition, Ramadan. At school, she’s been making Christmas cards for friends and teachers. She’s not too jealous of school friends getting Christmas presents. After all, as part of Eid and Nawruz, she’ll receive a new dress and money from her family.

Green and gold glory By Nick Creely IT’S been just over a month since Lachlan Madden touched down at Melbourne Airport. The 20-year-old baseball star was a part of the Baseball Australia Under 23 world cup team, where the Aussies claimed historic silver in Mexico from late October to early November. Despite going into the tournament as extreme outsiders, the Aussies showed off their trademark grit, grinding out win after win, even with foreign and at times daunting conditions. And Madden told the News that despite it being slightly different from home, he nonetheless enjoyed the experience of wearing the green and gold. “This was my first time in Mexico, but not my first time playing in a Latin country, but the culture is definitely different over there, I still enjoyed the experience and seeing a new country,” he said. “Mexico was definitely an experience, in saying that the tournament itself was run really well and the facilities were for the most part very nice, I really enjoyed the trip to Mexico.” It was a brilliant tournament for the
Australian team, stunning the other nations to quality for a do or die clash against top ranked side Japan, where they narrowly went down fighting despite giving the champs a scare. “The team was outstanding, we had an extremely short time to come together and get ready but we all gelled really well,” he said. “The team wasn’t the best team on paper but we all worked together and had the same goals. “We all were extremely proud to wear the Australian uniform.” On an individual sense, Madden shone bright, and despite limited opportunities, did his job and played a major part of the country’s success. “I feel like I did well, but I didn’t get slot of game time due to my role as a short reliever but I’m very happy with my performance nonetheless,” he said. It’s been an intriguing journey for the talented Berwick Dodger and Cheltenham Rustler, who was signed out of high school a few years back by the Houston Astros, before being cut early in 2016 despite some strong performances. Across the 20-year-old’s 34-game
minor league career, he had eight saves and 40 strikeouts from 46.2 innings pitched, numbers that suggest Madden has the talent to make it in the big time. Only a few months ago, Rustlers vice-president John Ferguson said that the experience of being cut by the Astros, despite the disappointment, probably matured him and made him re-think how he goes about his game. “He’s really reinvented himself as a mature age player, and that takes a bit of doing,” Ferguson said. “After his professional experience, he’s really coming back and making the most of the Australian scene, which is quite a strong scene.” Speaking about the future, Madden does not know where his career will take him, but the taste of international experience this year has him hungry to go one step further with the Aussies. “I’m unsure where my career will go from here, but I do dream of playing in the Olympics in 2020, which baseball has recently been put back into the Olympics but there is a long road to putting the Australian team in the Olympics,” he said.

Top honour to Lindsay Wealands KOOWEERUP Bowling Club played host to a very special occasion at the club’s Christmas party on Sunday with club stalwart Lindsay Wealands presented with the Peninsula Region Volunteer of the Year Award. Clubs from the Peninsula Region are invited to nominate a person who has provided outstanding service to their club. Lindsay manages the synthetic green and the entire surrounds of the green and is always the first to be called upon for repairs around the place which he tackles with enthusiasm. He has been a member of the committee of management for many years and is a life member of the club. The catchcry around the club when something needs to be done is “ask Lindsay' and if he can’t do it he will arrange it. All clubs have a Lindsay-type of person - and the club thinks theirs is special - and this award is due recognition for his magnificent contribution to the club.

Frankie picks up a win PAKENHAM GOLF MONDAY THE daily competition was Par and the winner was Frankie Chiu with +4. Frankie has started playing better during the summer months but would still like to reduce his handicap to single figures. The runnerup was Tony Wynen with +2 on a countback from Dave Manning. WEDNESDAY There were 64 players vying for the Midweek Medal with Bob Moffitt having the best score for the year with 46 points. Bob also won B Grade, however the runner-up was Phil Mott with 41 points which would have won most other weeks. The winner in A Grade was Terry Partridge with 44 points ahead of Greg Roberts with 39 points. The scoring was that good this week you needed 38 points just to win a ball. John Hungerford won the Supercomp for best nine holes with 23 points but was unable to keep that level of playing going and finished with 39 for the day. WEDNESDAY TWILIGHT The winner of Twilight this week was Doug Amos with 23 points. He beat Matt Brown who also played well scoring 22 points. There were 26 players which was a decent turnout, but the club is striving for 50 per week. THURSDAY

SATURDAY There was a fantastic field of 112 players competing for the Captains Cup. The winner was Denham Abeydeera with 40 points. Runnerup in C Grade was Steve Northcott with 39 points. The A Grade winner was Darren Grayson with 39 points ahead of Nick McQualter with 38 points. The B Grade winner was Bob Collins with 39 points on a countback from Marty Spurway. Marty Spurway is “Happy Gilmore,” meaning he hits the ball quite well but has struggled putting. Well he worked it out over the past couple of week and won the McQualter Knockout beating Rob Christie. Keep playing well Rob because a win can’t be far away. SUNDAY The winner was William Gourley with 38 points.

IS IT, I wonder, an attempt at quirky Korean humour that the new Hyundai Tucson, celebrating 30 years in Australia, requires turning the ignition key to start the engine (no pushbutton fire-up) and eschews satellite navigation.
