Family’s gift of life

By Cam Lucadou-Wells There’s no doubting that chatty 18-monthold Tom looks set to be particularly spoilt this Christmas.

After his doting Doveton parents Jo and Ben Coelho tried to start a family for five fretful years, it’s no surprise Tom is going to be showered with gifts.

During that uncertain prelude, the mind games were torturous as their friends successfully conceived.

Jo and Ben wondered what was “wrong” with them. Why was their much-yearned plan for children so elusive?

Now they beam with pride as they speak of their sparky toddler with a love of food, books, the beach, Hey Dougie and the family’s Pug. Ben smilingly speaks of the sleepless nights, teething and the ups and downs of early parenthood.

“It’s all worth it,” he said.

Jo adds: “I still can’t believe it.”

The Coelho’s saviour was in-vitro fertilisation treatment (IVF), unexpectedly so because they’d assumed it was unaffordably expensive.

They warily visited a low-cost, bulk-billing Dandenong IVF clinic, The Fertility Centre.

“We heard the ad for it on the radio and it

advertised that it was much cheaper,” Ms Coelho said.

“But we wondered what’s the quality like?”

Upon a visit, they were convinced they were in sure, caring hands and that it was their only chance of becoming parents.

Still their estimated odds of success was about one in three.

Three of Jo’s eggs were frozen. When they found out the first IVF pregnancy failed, the couple describe as the worst day of their life.

Within three months they tried for a second.

During a Bali holiday, Jo felt sick – but it was in fact a good omen. For the first time she was pregnant.

The next June, Tom was duly born and welcomed to the world.

To the couple’s elation, Jo is now 17 weeks pregnant – due to natural conception. They add that conception was expected to be easier after the first IVF pregnancy.

The couple also intend to enact their pledge to use all of their stored eggs, and so fertilise the third egg at some stage.

Despite some people “looking down” on IVF babies, Jo says: “It’s just as much a miracle.

“It’s the same DNA. It’s that extra help for people to have a family.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells MANURE and soil dust as well as sawdust has been “raining on us” for years, say workers just 50 metres north of increasingly notorious soil and mulch yards on O’Grady Road, Hallam.

During what could be described as a light shower of dust in Bolt Court, industrial chemist Zebolitar Prvulovic said vehicles needed to be hosed down daily and factory doors firmly shut in response to the invasive dirt that has been falling on workplaces.

In a recent heavy-pollution week, Mr Prvulovic coughed for four days straight, and has taken to wearing a charcoal-filtered mask outside.

“We can’t take in the bacteria (that’s on the dust). It’s not sterile,” the science graduate said.

“That’s why we cough.”

Even inside his factory, Mr Prvulovic works within marquees in an effort to keep his intermediate sunscreen chemicals free from dust contaminants.

His neat warehouse laboratory barely has a surface spare of the red and dark film.

Neighbouring workers Jason and Ethan Walker said in that same week, their yard was “caked” with the pollution.

Normally their trucks have to be cleaned of deep build-ups of silt at least twice a day.

“It’s too fine to stop it,” Jason said.

“You open up the roller door and it goes through the factory.”

Meanwhile, Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) confirmed it was investigating several businesses in O’Grady Road - and would consider pollution notices and sanctions against the offenders.

EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said EPA officers recently inspected a business in the area to “address community concerns”.

Officers then observed several other businesses that may be contributing to the dust issue, Ms Mathias said.

A morning drink between three men in Hallam ended with stab wounds and hospital trips after an argument boiled over.

The three men were drinking at a George Avenue home on Thursday 8 December when an argument turned nasty about 10.30am.

It started after the men had a disagreement about how one of them treated their partner and one of the men produced a knife and attempted to attack the other two.

Two of the three men were taken to hospital, one with minor stab wounds and the other with a substantial cut to his hand.

An unoccupied house was damaged by a suspicious fire in Muirkirk Close, Endeavour Hills, shortly after 1am on 15 December.

Fire crews from Hallam and Dandenong CFA stations were called to the blaze at the rear of the home about 1.15am. It took about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Victoria Police investigators were treating the fire as suspicious.

A soil business in Hallam’s industrial estate says a local dirt road could be the cause of the dust swarms plaguing nearby residents.

Frank Forino, of Supreme Organic Soils (SOS), says his soil doesn’t fit the description of the rich brown and red dirt that has beset people, homes and cars on the south side of Hallam Creek.

His soil is “Dandy loam” - sourced from Keysborough - and mixed with horse manure and straw into a compost.

“There’s not a bit of red in my soil,” Mr Forino said.

“It sounds like there’s a bit of bark in it. That’s definitely not from us.”

Star News broke the plight of residents at Glenora Way and Rowland Close, Hampton Park, online on 9 December.

The following day, Casey sprayed dust suppressant on the unsealed O’Grady Road, Mr Forino said.

SOS was inspected by Casey council and Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) on 12 December.

A Cranbourne man faces charges over more than 200 offences after a crime spree throughout the south-east suburbs over a few months.

The 24-year-old faces charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court including burglary, reckless conduct, drug and traffic offences.

The accused was a person of interest across three different police service areas for roughly four months and has been implicated in more than 80 burglaries or attempted burglaries.

He was arrested and taken into police custody after detectives from the Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit executed a warrant on an address in Stawell Street in Cranbourne on the morning of Wednesday 9 November.

A 39-year-old female and a 36-year-old male were also arrested at the property.

Detective Senior Constable Brad Coller from Casey Crime Investigation Unit has charged the man with 90 offences across several suburbs including Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Pakenham.

He first appeared at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 30 November but his matter was adjourned, and he has been remanded in custody until Tuesday 20 December.

15 December 1966 Million a week in the mail Postal employees are working 24-hour nonstop shifts to handle an avalanche of Christmas mail at Dandenong Post Office.

A million articles a week are being sorted and dispatched at the main Dandenong post office and postmen are delivering six bags of mail a day to Dandenong residents.

The number of letters has increased to such a degree that postmen are being given extra bags of mail on their delivery rounds.

Counter work at the post office has become so hectic that during peak periods people have sometimes stood five deep waiting to cash cheques, pay in money or send telegrams.

Dandenong Postmaster Mr J P Murphy told The Journal yesterday that despite the extra work, delivery of Christmas mail would not be delayed.

Never in our existence has the Christmas season come to us in such cheerless and disastrous circumstances as the present year, owing to the magnitude of the European war now raging, in which Great Britain and her dominions and the Allies are fighting the military power of Germany and those who have joined forces with the Hun. More than two years of war in all its frightfulness waged by a power who disregards Hague conventions ...

In the early stages, through a state of unpreparedness, Great Britain was at a distinct disadvantage in regard to the army but, although deficient in numbers, the brave soldiers fighting on all fronts have performed wonderful feats.

NAME

Greater Dandenong was Max Oldmeadow’s home and his passion.

The community farewelled its living treasure at Trinity Church in Dandenong on 27 March 2013.

It was there that his grandfather preached more than 100 years ago, a window was dedicated to his father, and a room was named in his honour.

It was also where he married his “great love” Pam, who passed away earlier that year after more than 62 years of marriage.

His father ran a hay and grain store diagonally behind the Dandenong post office.

She said he was a Dandenong boy to the core, born in the family home in Robinson Street, a primary school pupil in Dandenong West, and a student at Dandenong High School and Wesley College.

At age 18 he enlisted in the Air Force, and after the war fell into teaching.

“He was a natural, and later a master, of the teaching craft,” Ian said.

He trained at Melbourne Teachers’ College and at University of Melbourne and taught primary and secondary school, including at schools within Greater Dandenong. His community efforts were recognised with an Order of Australia Medal in 1993 and he was named a Living Treasure of the City of Dandenong in 1998.

Son Ian Oldmeadow said his father was committed to the Dandenong community and watched it change dramatically over the years.

“Max himself said that he was fortunate to grow up in Dandenong. It was his home and its community was his passion,” he said.

“He grew and changed as his life unfolded. He was always willing to reassess his own attitudes and beliefs.”

Max was a teacher and principal at Chandler Secondary College in Noble Park, a Dandenong councillor considered responsible for the Dandenong Library, a devoted member of the Interfaith Network of Greater Dandenong and the member for Holt in the Whitlam Government.

He gave time, energy and expertise to agencies and groups including the Dandenong Hospital, Trewint Nursing Home, Dandenong Child Care, the Dandenong Festival of Music and Art for Youth, the Uniting Church Share Community Appeal, Grassmere Youth Services, Dorothy Bailey House, Dandenong North Uniting Church Community Outreach Project, Dandenong and District Historical Society and Dandenong U3A. “First and foremost he saw his role as looking out for the interests of the people of Dandenong and championing education,” Ian said.

Charges after US tip-off

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A tip-off from American investigators led to the arrest of a man who appeared at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court accused of possessing child pornography.

Benjamin Michael Gledhill was refused bail because of fears that he may destroy incriminating online evidence.

The 25-year-old was arrested at his home on 13 December after an Australian Federal Police raid in which officers said they found the most extreme categories of pornography involving children, sadism and bestiality.

First Constable Scott Amjah, of the AFP, told the court that among the seized material found in print and on electronic devices was an image of a naked young child who was “tied up and bound”.

“The early indications say yes, he’s definitely been sharing (the images) in some form.”

First Const Amjah quoted extracts from a conversation on the messenger app Kick, in which the accused allegedly chatted to ‘Derek’ and said

“that’s a pretty collection of videos, man”. On other app chats with unknown people, he says his preference is for “pre-teen” sex, “teens, incest, nudism” and “boys and girls 1-10” – which First Const Amjah told the court he assumed meant 1-10 years old.

Gledhill had previously served a community corrections order for similar offending in 2012, the court heard.

In arguing for bail, Gledhill told the court he’d complied with previous bail conditions including weekly visits to Pakenham Police Station, psychological treatment and being banned from the internet.

He said he complied with his CCO’s community work conditions and appointments.

“I’ve never been held in custody or remanded before,” he said. “That’s quite concerning for me.”

Police had arrested Gledhill after a referral from a US company in early November about the transmission of child pornography, the court heard.

Gmail account, which led them to Gledhill, First Const Amjah said.

Gledhill had told police that he had 40 online accounts, some of which had not yet been accessed by police, First Const Amjah said.

If the accused was released on bail, he could easily access and delete the online material and compromise the AFP investigation, the court heard.

Gledhill was charged at Dandenong police station that day but didn’t participate in a police interview.

He made no admissions during field interviews, First Const Amjah said.

Magistrate Barry Schultz described the allegations as “very serious” and “very concerning”, particularly in light of the 2012 offending.

Mr Schultz said he refused bail because Gledhill was an unacceptable risk of re-offending, a risk to public safety and of obstructing justice.

Gledhill was remanded to appear at a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 14 December.

Year 12 students from high schools in the City of Casey have survived their last year of schooling and achieved great results following their end-of-year exams.

The anxious wait for students came to an end on 12 December when ATAR scores were officially released across the state.

Students from the 10 public and private schools in Cranbourne and surrounds celebrated achieving high scores with praise from the teachers and principals.

Principal at Hampton Park Secondary College David Finnerty said all his Year 12 students had made the school community very proud.

“We are incredibly proud of our student achievements this year,” he said.

“We were thrilled to see that 14 of our students achieved a 40 + study score in at least one unit of study and in English, we have improved the mean study score by 7.4 per cent.”

The Hampton Park Secondary College 2016 dux is Alevine Magila with an ATAR score of 99.1 while four other students at the school scored an ATAR in the 90s and a further 10 students in the 80s.

St Peter’s College in Cranbourne had 161 students in Year 12 in 2016 with 137 finishing their VCE and 24 completing Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).

The top performer of the VCE students at St Peter’s is Will Veenman from the East Campus with an ATAR score of 96.05.

Will is looking forward to commencing a science course at Melbourne University and principal Tim Hogan congratulated him on his wonderful achievement and the superb role model he has been for other students. Other high achievers included Perry Zorotheos and Max Collins from the West Campus of St Peter’s College who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and creative writing.

’Tis the season for all families but without the gifts For the Mohammads, Christmas means a time for family – barbecues in the park and watching fireworks even if there are no exchanges of gifts.

Ismail, his wife Jawahir and his three children, as Afghan Hazaras, more closely observe Eid and Nawruz celebrations during other times of the year.

“We believe that Eid and Nawruz are our Christmas,” Ismail says.

“It is a time for feeling happy with others.”

During the jollities, special cakes are prepared and family members host one another in their homes.

When Ismail first arrived in Sydney in 2012, Christmas – with families flocking towards the beach – was a new experience.

He quickly realised it was a human celebration, a chance to appreciate family and friends.

On Christmas Eve, the family huddle together watching fireworks outside the famous carols concert at Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

The next day, they’ll meet other families for a picnic and barbecue.

His daughter Benazir, 11, said it seemed similar to Eid – which marks the end of the Muslim tradition, Ramadan.

At school, she’s been making Christmas cards for friends and teachers.

She’s not too jealous of school friends getting Christmas presents.

After all, as part of Eid and Nawruz, she’ll receive a new dress and money from her family.

Legal appeal over poll result

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Could there be a Christmas miracle in store for Narre Warren North’s John Foy? In days, Planning Panels Victoria member Con Tsotsoros is expected to rule on whether Casey Council can compulsorily acquire Mr Foy’s 34-acre home, garden and habitat lake for a threepitch soccer reserve.

Mr Foy, 78, objects to the proposal – not least the access road that would plough through his house, hundreds of native plantings and the sanctuary for all sorts of wildlife that he’s created over the past 35 years.

He wishes that Mr Tsotsoros – who held the one-day hearing at Casey Civic Centre on 1 December – had ventured up the road to see the persuasive splendours of the property first-hand.

“How can you make a decision without visiting the property, to see the work that I’ve done?

“I think it’s a terrible waste of a good house, for a start.”

Besides, he lists several varieties of frogs and water birds, including the scarse freckled duck and the shoveller that have lived here.

This spring, Pacific Black ducks raised offspring in nesting boxes on the lake’s island and venture via Mr Foy’s network of frog ponds to Eumemmerring Creek.

Scores of ibis at a time, gang gang cockatoos, kangaroos, honey-eaters, robin red-breasts, blue wreens and copperhead snakes have been sighted since Mr Foy transformed bare paddocks and a tiny billabong.

Mr Foy is pretty happy with his handiwork, though he wishes he made the lake even larger.

“It’s the only thing I wished I had have done.”

Casey council has justified the acquisition by the shortage of soccer fields in the municipality’s north, as well as joining it to the next-door Narre Warren North Reserve.

It also has plans to build the “missing link” in a trail between Frog Hollow Reserve and Lysterfield Lake.

The trail section would follow Eumemmerring Creek bisecting the property.

John Foy will learn the fate of his home and wildlife lake within days. 162598 Mr Foy said he has had the looming acquisition “hanging over my head” for close to a decade.

Yet he said he and neighbouring residents were “ill prepared” for the final act due to Casey delaying its release of the full details of its plans.

It was not until days before the hearing that Mr Foy learnt of the plotted destruction of the house, garden and lake.

Had they known of the scale of the project, more neighbours would have objected, Mr Foy said.

“The council secrecy is the big issue and they’re well known for it. They’re things I should have told the (panel) hearing.”

Turner said publicly exhibited information had included reference to “the future expansion of district leisure and sporting facilities”, as well as the shared user path link.

The owners of the property, owners and occupiers of surrounding land were notified of the amendment’s exhibition in writing, Mr Turner said.

From legal advice, Mr Foy believes there’s no point trying to appeal the panel decision if it goes against him. Appeals rarely win, he was told.

He has no plans of where to move instead.

Despite the lawful compensation he’d receive, no place would replicate his home.

“Besides, I haven’t lost this battle yet.”

Ousted Casey councillor Gary Rowe has launched legal proceedings against the Victorian Electoral Commission following his loss in the recent elections.

Mr Rowe claims he lost his seat representing Mayfield ward to Steve Beardon by less than 100 votes but was denied a recount.

“When I went out, the difference between myself and next person was 96 votes, a very small margin,” he said.

“I requested a recount on the grounds I had heard anecdotally there were inconsistencies in which manner in which the returning office handled ballot papers at the Berwick counting office.”

Mr Rowe also says he received statutory declarations from vote counters that there were failures at the Berwick counting office to properly handle votes that may have been informal.

However, Mr Rowe says when he requested a recount of the votes before the declaration of the polls he was told the VEC would not grant him one.

Mr Rowe said his legal action is not about winning or losing the election but about the due process of vote counting.

“I have nothing against the City of Casey, my complaint is with the VEC and the VEC’s process and failure to listen,” he said. “It’s a process issue.”

The man declared the winner of the seat in Mayfield, Steve Beardon, has hit back at Mr Rowe’s legal action. “Gary Rowe, you are wasting your time,” Cr Beardon said.

“We took on the might of the Liberal Party, the might of all their money, billboards, direct mailouts, their army of volunteers, and beat off everything that Rowe, Stapledon and their Liberal army could throw at us.”

Mr Rowe’s action will be first heard by the Municipal Electoral Tribunal on Friday 9 December.

Make-up can hide many skin dangers

This has been a big year with much progress taking place on the construction of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital.

The new seven-storey hospital that’s due to open in late 2017 is visibly changing the skyline of the outer south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne and it’s changing the community’s expectations of health and hospital care with new services soon to be available close to home.

St John of God Berwick Hospital Director of Mission Rhonda O’Connor has spent much of the last year visiting schools, service clubs and church groups and has heard first-hand what the new hospital will mean to the communities of Casey and Cardinia.

“There is a great sense of excitement, relief and security in knowing that our aging community can have access to great healthcare, close to their loved ones, in the community where they belong,” Rhonda said.

“Until now families have had to make choices about whether to undertake or continue chemotherapy treatments or they have delayed surgery because travelling to inner-city Melbourne puts so much strain on budgets or disruption to their families.

“Sometimes they can’t visit family members in hospital because they just can’t get there. Children have been left not being able to see a parent because it is too far away.

“Accessing specialists means taking a full day off work to make a round trip for a 20 minute appointment.

“The community is particularly welcoming of the cardiac care and intensive care options that mean some of the more complex procedures and surgeries can be done here,” Rhonda said.

The hospital’s development program has used the tagline ‘Care closer to home’ which Rhonda said translates in the eyes of community members as ‘Relief, support, care, nurture, timely treatment

By Cam Lucadou-Wells You don’t need to know your workmates, you don’t even need to like them ...

But that’s teamwork, and that’s life, according to a Doveton College student involved in a Hands On Learning program.

This pearl of wisdom and work ethic was part of a sharply edited and forthright film by Doveton College student Zach Gleeson.

His promo won a video competition run by Hands on Learning Australia throughout its 70plus participating Victorian schools.

Zach’s success mirrors many of the 20 Doveton College HOL participants’ personal growth this year, says co-ordinator Gina Fisher.

The students are taken out of the classroom once a week to busy their hands building new gates, outdoor tables, fences and gardens at the school.

They make rafts and billy-carts for interschool competitions.

“These are children that don’t engage in the classroom for whatever reason,” Ms Fisher said.

“Removing them takes off the pressure of having to focus in class or hand in homework.”

As they get busy, they learn teamwork and social interactivity, build confidence and set goals with an artisan-teacher and well-being teacher.

“It’s like a job and they’re told these are the things you’re expected to do,” Ms Fisher said.

“When they go on in school or work, they understand the maturity needed.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said Zach’s video was an exceptional way to showcase the success of the HOL program at Doveton.

“Zach and his classmates have demonstrated enormous personal growth through this program – and in turn the program has opened new doors and new opportunities.

“Doveton College is more than just a school – it’s the heart of the Doveton community.

“It is important we recognise its outstanding achievements and the achievements of our local students.“

Could lollypop-people at school crossings be taking a political stand next year?

As part of Casey Council’s call for more state funding for the $2.7 million program, a ‘lollypopper’ has told Star News that they may be asked to hand out the council’s propaganda, wear badges and rally on the steps of State Parliament.

The council has said it will mount a significant advocacy campaign of up to 12 months for the State Government to split the program’s costs 50:50.

Currently Casey is set to pay about 76 per cent of the program’s expenses in 2016-’17.

An unco-operative under-age accused seems to have languished in adult prison for months while awaiting trial at a Children’s Court.

The court heard that the child’s lawyer had repeatedly requested adjournments of the hearings since June, but had not appeared in court in person.

The situation was “intolerable” even though the child had admittedly refused to take phone calls, the judge said.

The child’s level of violence was also very high, and had last appeared on video link in handcuffs.

“I won’t bring a child to court under restraint.

“He just needs to know his rights are being respected as well.”

The judge indicated that the law firm would be reported to the Victorian Legal Services Board.

A stray cigarette appeared to set off a spectacular bin fire outside Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 December.

With the temperature well above 30 degrees, court security were put to quick action extinguishing tall flames and a thick white wall of smoke covered the courthouse’s Pultney Street entrance.

It made some visitors wonder what the evacuation plan was - especially with the court’s only other entrance in Langhorne Street being closed due to works.

Cheers to manufacturing

By Casey Neill About 200 people celebrated a strong year for manufacturing in the south-east and more success to come.

Peak manufacturing body South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) hosted its annual Christmas cocktail evening at Iveco in Dandenong on Tuesday 13 December.

The event was an opportunity to meet and network with members and politicians, and to celebrate the year’s achievements.

SEMMA president Simon Whiteley said the turnout showed the region’s combined strength and prosperity.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the Smart Manufacturing ’16 event in May and the regional manufacturing showcase in Parliament House in March “got people talking in parliament”.

“What a year for manufacturing in the southeast,” she said.

Ms Williams said businesses in the region flexing their manufacturing muscle reminded people not to be complacent about the industry.

“It’s changing, it’s not dead,” she said.

“I do think it’s a bright future, and it’s a future with a lot of passion behind it, and I think that’s what makes this region so special.”

She has heard many people say, “I didn’t realise you made that in Dandenong’ over the past year.

“It should be a source of pride and something we advocate,” she said.

Lloyd Reeman worked for Iveco for 47 years, and is now a brand ambassador for the company.

He ran guests through the company’s history, from bringing farm equipment from the US to Australia in the 1850s to establishing a foundry and tractor manufacturing plant in 1939.

Mr Reeman said that factory never produced farm or road machinery, but instead ended up building army supplies.

The company started making tractors, then trucks, and opened the Dandenong South factory in 1952 alongside Heinz and General Motors.

“We’ve employed a lot of people and been part of families, and we’ve made Dandenong grow,” he said.

“We are a true manufacturer.”

The company survived 10 years under receivership in the 1980s.

It will soon return to its early partnership with International Harvester, importing the products from the US and perhaps one day again assembling its products.

Today, the Dandenong plant builds the Powerstar, ACCO and Stralis models along with the Metro and Delta bus chassis.

It is also home to a large product engineering department that has a facility for building and testing prototypes built to suit Australian conditions.

Global hub for tablet making One of the largest pharmaceutical tablet making facilities in the world will be built in Dandenong South.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams visited Komipharm International Australia on Thursday 15 December to announce a State Government grant to help the company expand.

The Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT) cash will allow Komipharm to create a new global headquarters and research and development hub in Monterey Road.

The company will hire 40 new workers, including 10 people who lost their jobs in the automotive industry. Komipharm will also expand its global sales footprint through better access to markets in North America and Western Europe.

The business was among 12 to share in $6.47 million in LIFT grants announced this month.

The commercial-in-confidence grants are part of the Towards Future Industries: Victoria’s Automotive Transition Plan designed to fund business expansions to create new jobs for retrenched automotive workers.

“While the closure of auto manufacturing has presented significant challenges for our region, we are working with businesses to find expansion opportunities and create jobs so that automotive workers can transition into new roles,” Ms Williams said.

“Supporting Komipharm means we are helping a local manufacturer expand their market, which creates long-term job opportunities.”

Sweet success grows

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Montague Fresh has packed its first China-bound sea-freight batch of nectarines, tasting the Asian nation’s cavernous appetite for quality stonefruit.

The first orders were packed at the Narre Warren North orchard on 13 December and scheduled to land at Chinese docks within a week.

Montague’s international trade development manager Claire Fichett says the landmark deal had taken a long time to harvest.

To be exact, it took 13 years of negotiation between the Australian and Chinese governments before settling on an import protocol for nectarines.

Montague hoped that Chinese demand for imported nectarines would be as strong as its appetite for imported cherries – thought to be more than 94,000 tonnes in 2014/15.

Early social media feedback in response to some air-freighted nectarines last week had been favourable, Ms Fichett said.

“We’re confident that our brand will resonate with the discerning Chinese market.”

The orchard had bred and developed its naturally sweet, low-acid fruits, largely to suit the Asian palate, she said.

Ms Fichett said it was hoped there could be further agreed import protocols for export peaches and plums into the huge Chinese market.

Montague already sends plums and other stonefruit to Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai.

Its Pink Lady apples have successfully landed in the UK and the Netherlands this spring.

Refugees given a hand by friends and made welcome Friends of Refugees helped more than 2000 people seeking asylum to feel welcome and supported during the past year.

The independent not-for-profit organisation held its third annual general meeting at its Leslie Street, Dandenong, drop-in centre on Wednesday 23 November.

Since 2013, Friends of Refugees (FOR) has worked as a coalition of volunteers offering support and compassion for people seeking asylum, and refugees.

Its aim is to create a positive future for refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia.

FOR secretary Julie Klok said that during the past year, the group “has done what it can with minimal funding” to help more than 2000 people seeking asylum feel welcome and supported in the community.

She said it provided emergency relief, material aid and food aid; a children’s education program; family literacy programs; bikes; computer recycling; employment and training opportunities; and friendship outreach.

A father of five has pleaded guilty to trafficking drugs and handling proceeds of crime after being discovered with a cocktail of drugs and electronic devices in a car at a Pakenham car wash.

Brian Andrew Duyn, 33, had been seen with a male and female cleaning a Ford Falcon with stolen number plates on 2 October about 5.45pm, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

When fronted by police, Duyn produced a fake Victorian driver’s licence with his photo and the purported name “Wayne Hood” of Waverley Road, Mt Waverley.

The unemployed man was found with $1375 cash on his person and then fled on foot as police began to search the car.

After an hour-plus pursuit involving other police units including the Air Wing, Duyn “lashed out” during his arrest and had to be forcibly restrained, the court heard.

Meanwhile during the car search, police found an ice pipe, and a milk crate containing mobile phones, cordless drills and gaming consoles.

About five grams of suspected ice in three small bags, as well as a bag of cannabis and a container of 15 grams of GHB were also seized by police.

At the time there were two warrants for Duyn’s arrest including for stealing a vehicle.

The lawyer said he was intending to move to his girlfriend’s home in Highett to escape his associates in Narre WarrenPakenham.

The accused had been drug-free for most of his twenties until he “spiralled out of control” into an ice addiction when made redundant as a forklift operator in 2012, the lawyer said.

Duyn had since “made steps” to booking in for rehab and seeking work as well as behaving “impeccably” during his stint at Port Phillip Prison, the court heard.

During the hearing on 13 December, the court was told that Duyn had just served 70 days’ jail for perverting the course of justice - namely, for supplying “dodgy” medical certificates to Dandenong Drug Court.

Duyn’s lawyer said the accused referred to his unsuccessful drug treatment order as “the worst period of his life”.

Magistrate Doug Bolster said Duyn faced further jail time followed by a community corrections order.

Latest waves of asbestos exposure Although the use of all forms of asbestos has been banned in Australia since 2003, the risk of exposure continues to raise its head.

“Most Australians have been exposed to asbestos at some stage in their life,” said Seamus Herrick, a lawyer at Adviceline Injury Lawyers.

“It is really important that people understand the risks associated with exposure.

“The most devastating consequence of asbestos exposure is the development of mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer that always results in a terminal diagnosis,” Seamus adds.

“Sadly, the average survival time after diagnosis is between 10 and 12 months.”

However, not all exposure to asbestos results in an asbestos-related injury or illness.

It depends on the frequency and intensity of exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. Importantly, it can take between 10 to 40 years or more before an injury or illness is diagnosed.

People seeking legal advice following diagnosis of an asbestos-related disease will most likely fall within one of three broad categories, called “waves”.

Those who worked with the big asbestos manufacturers like James Hardie and others were among the first sufferers of asbestos diseases and are called the first wave.

Next, tradesmen and workers who used the products were the second wave.

This includes partners that came into contact with asbestos domestically, such as when washing work clothes.

In recent times, the focus has been on the third wave - home renovators who are uncovering asbestos used in homes built between the 1950s and 1970s.

“DIY television has prompted many to do renovation work themselves in an effort to save time and costs associated with professionals,” explains Seamus.

“However, spending the extra money to have products containing asbestos removed professionally reduces the risk of exposure to this deadly dust.”

But now a number of news stories has created concern about a fourth wave of potential sufferers - those who are exposed to new products coming into Australia without knowing they contain asbestos.

Ten people have been charged, and 14 guns including some made with a 3-D printer were seized during police raids on homes in Melbourne’s south east on 11 December.

Thirteen properties with links to organised crime were raided just after 6.40am, police say.

The raids were in Noble Park North, Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren, Lyndhurst, Mulgrave, Rowville, Mount Waverley, Carrum, Carrum Downs, Wheelers Hill and Seaford.

Superintendant Amy Gledden of Victoria Police said the operation had disrupted organised crime, netting a significant quantity of ice and other drugs.

The operation had “prevented harm to the community, particularly in the Melbourne southeastern suburbs”, Supt Gledden said.

During the raids, police also seized items stolen in burglaries as well as cash and silver bars that would have been used to fund further criminal activity, she said.

The weapons seized included firearms that had been modified, those in their original state and among the first seized by Victoria Police that

had been made with a 3-D printer.

The reliability and effectiveness of the printer guns were yet to be tested by police forensic officers.

Among those charged was a 30-year-old Noble Park North man, with trafficking a commercial quantity of ice, being a prohibited person possessing a firearm and other weapons offences.

A 43-year-old Lyndhurst man was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of ice, possessing proceeds of crime and other drug-related offences.

They and two other men were remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 12 December.

Six others were bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on 20 March, including a 26-year-old Noble Park North woman on trafficking ice and possessing GHB and a 25-year-old Noble Park North man on trafficking ice, possessing proceeds of crime and other drug offences.

A 32-year-old Lyndhurst woman was charged with possessing ice and cannabis, a 28-year-old Endeavour Hills man with trafficking ice and possessing ammunition and a 22-year-old Narre Warren woman with trafficking ice, handling stolen goods and possessing proceeds of crime.

Car clean raiders were a wash-out Police are seeking public assistance to locate two men involved in a burglary at a car wash on Hallam South Road, Hallam, on Wednesday 7 December.

About 3.30am the two men approached the business in a dark coloured hatchback and one of the men got out of the car while the other kept watch.

One of the crooks cut open the lock to the office of the car wash and once inside turned the CCTV camera towards the roof.

The crook then attempted to open the cash box stored in the office but couldn’t and the two would-be thieves left empty handed.

By Nicholas Creely Well, they are the toast of the town so far this season, and rightly so, but the Jayco Dandenong Rangers’ best is still yet to come, cautions coach Larissa Anderson.

After a patchy start to the WNBL season, in which the Rangers lost three of their first seven games, they responded and with the brute precision that has seen them play high end basketball and now go into the Christmas break as the ladder-leaders.

“There is way better still to come – you can just feel it, the group realises their potential and the belief is continuing to grow,” Anderson said.

“We have a lot of work still yet to be done – we are focusing on the areas of improvement, and we have little goals along the way.”

“We are travelling really well – even that first month it was all about building.

“Obviously we know we can do better and we have a lot of work to do which is a pleasing situation to be in,” Anderson said.

“A couple of those early losses just shouldn’t have happened but they have also helped get us to where we are now.

“We have let those losses go and I’m extremely proud of the group, in particular without our two star imports Ally Mallott and Nat Novosel, who have been injured a lot but are now starting to build up their games.

“We have got a lot of improving and building – we have now beaten at-least every team once which is great and we have shown we can match it with everyone and we have also shown where our strengths and weaknesses lie.

“I think everyone is playing their role and that’s the thing about this group.

Like she was when she returned to play a WNBL season for Dandenong two years ago, Taylor is delighted to come home again.

“I feel so lucky to have been part of an amazing organisation with a leader in Gerry Ryan who loves women’s basketball and has shown consistent passion and support,” she said.

“I was able to begin my WNBL career in an environment that encouraged me to work hard, focus on my dreams and be surrounded by people who love the game.

“I’ll be forever grateful to Gerry and the Dandenong Rangers organisation.”

Prior to the on-court contest, Penny will be the special guest at a pre-game cocktail function which basketball fans can secure tickets to and fans will also have the opportunity to get an autograph and photos with Penny after the game.

“Penny is a big part of the Dandenong Rangers history and we look forward to seeing her back for the first time since retiring, along with many other great Rangers players,” Rangers Elite Teams Administrator Trish Fallon said.

“At the start of the year she was probably a little bit up and down, to be honest. She has carried a big load,” Anderson explained.

“She has always been up there on my list of players to watch, she is just phenomenal and I’m so proud to see her come into her own, and that’s because life off the court is so sorted for her.

“We do a great job as a team in getting the ball to her and we play well to her strengths.”

But Anderson won’t allow the Rangers to rest on their laurels and will attack the second-half of the season with the same gusto.

“No matter where we are placed on the ladder, we were always going to approach the second half of the season the same way, and we will continue to build,” she said.

The Rangers will return from their break on 8 January 2017 with a clash against the Adelaide Lightning at home.

The Rowville Football Club has signed recently departed Doveton senior coach Steve O’Brien as its senior assistant to Peter Bastinac.

In a signing the club said was “extremely excited” about, O’Brien adds a wealth of experience to the Hawks.

O’Brien has been heavily involved in a coaching capacity in senior football for more than a decade which included stints at Parkdale, St Kilda City, Devon Meadows, as well as VFL clubs Casey Scorpions and Box Hill.

Only about a month ago, O’Brien shocked the SEFNL by leaving his helm at the Doves, despite having two years to run on his contract.

Meanwhile, the Springvale Districts Football Club, in conjunction with the Parkmore Junior Football Club, has announced it has formed a partnership which will provide an educated pathway for Parkmore junior footballers to make a transition to senior football with Springvale Districts.

Both clubs will enter this partnership with a goal to provide boys and girls from Keysborough, Noble Park, Springvale and surrounding suburbs with a unique opportunity to journey from the ranks of Auskick all the way through to senior football.

The basis of the partnership between the two clubs will see Auskick all the way through to U17s with Parkmore and then from the U19s to the seniors with Springvale Districts.

Parkmore Springvale Districts will also field a side in SFNL under 19s competition in 2017.

Coaches juggle places

By Nicholas Creely In a shock to the NPL, newly appointed Dandenong Thunder coach Giuseppe Anastasi has pulled out his agreement to head down-under, with the Thunder swiftly appointing Gianfranco Impellizzeri to the helm.

In a statement released to Thunder fans, Anastasi cited family and personal issues as the reason he cannot commit to the club in 2017.

Impellizzeri has already begun to implement his pre-season regime and is expected to adapt quickly into the role.

The experienced campaigner has a long list of experience in the game, including a playing career in Australia with clubs such as Brunswick, Box Hill and Springvale City.

Post-playing days, Impellizzeri had stints as senior coach with Pascoe Vale and Werribee.

In other news around the traps of the George Andrews Reserve, the club has announced the signing of Rini Muriqi to the roster.

A former junior/senior of the club, Muriqi, 28, represented the Moreland Zebras in a short stint and then Box Hill United in 2016.

He will now link up with former teammates Rodrigo Vargas and Alon Blumgart.

Muriqi told the club’s website that he cannot wait to get stuck in and said that the pull of getting to the Thunder weighed large.

“I started my football career playing juniors at Dandenong Thunder and have always been a part of the club one way or another,” he said.

“It’s been a long time coming, but it’s good to be back home.”

The Muriqi family name is famous within the Thunder community. His dad Dadil played at the club with great success.

Meanwhile, Dandenong City has signed striker Paul Harvey for the 2017 NPL season as it looks to advance into the top tier of the competition.

He is expected to play a major role in the City’s 2017 campaign.

The game against the Stars, which will be played on Wednesday 21 December at Shepley Oval from 1pm, is going to be an exciting event, with free entry and a chance to meet such cricketers as Peter Handscomb, Marcus Stoinis, Kevin Pietersen and T20 legend David Hussey.

Dandenong captain Tom Donnell has been named in the team and is no stranger to big scores in this format of the game after he made a spectacular 114 not-out in just 60 balls only two months ago against Melbourne University.

The skipper hasn’t had a season to remember so far but is a damaging prospect and one to watch.

Breeding shows she’s not resting on her Laurels Family favourite Up Hill Jill delivered her connections their biggest thrill in greyhound racing when she took out Thursday night’s $72,500 Group 2 Laurels final.

Up Hill Jill speared out of the inside alley as fancied runners Fanta Bale and Striker Light found trouble. Up Hill Jill led clearly down the back straight and was unchallenged in the run to the line, defeating Fearless Swan by eight lengths in 29.55.

“To have bred and brought her up ourselves makes it very special.

“For breeders this is the one of the most sought after races - out of all the big races the Laurels is in the top echelon.

“It’s special because, as breeders, we spend a lot of time with the dogs – we whelp and care for them throughout their whole career.

“It’s a race we all want to win – it’s synonymous with breeding.”

The Laurels is not Geall’s first success at group level however he regards the win as one of his biggest achievements.

“We’ve been fortunate to have won Group races before but to win a race like this at Sandown, being the venue it is and the history be-

hind it, it’s sensational.”

Back in October Up Hill Jill was an impressive winner of the Match Maker final at Shepparton two runs later she was a gallant second to future star Hit The Highway.

“Good friends of ours (Angela Langton and Jeff Britton) have a greyhound (Hit The Highway) that ran her down and he is a super dog - they thought her run was great and recommended we give her a go at the Laurels.”

Geall took up training greyhounds full-time nine years ago and was extremely thankful for those who have helped him along the way.

“My wife works full-time though still finds time to help with the dogs, my brother Jeff always gives me a hand and Mick Vaughan takes control whenever I go away.

Craig Slocombe is a pillar of the DDCA - arguably its greatest ever player - but the end of his career is starting to come closer.

With nothing left to prove, Slocombe, 43, continues to grind away, captaining Springvale South in Turf 1 this season and said the youth and energy of his team-mates has kept him going – but admits that cricket won’t last forever.

“I love the game and what it brings, I want to win and that’s how I’ve grown up – cricket’s fun and there’s also a lot of healthy competition in this association, obviously with a lot of people coming in around the same age as me,” he said.

“At the moment, my motivation is our young group, we are skilful and switched on – I don’t want to leave them in the deep end because they’re really good kids – and I want to have something decent to watch with a beer down the track.

“I haven’t put a date on anything, but the end is very close.”

Tragics of the DDCA have branded Slocombe the greatest batsman produced in a richly strong competition, but typical of the ‘Slocs’ style, he remained modest and dismissive of the tag.

“It doesn’t sit comfortably at all, to be honest.

“When you play long enough you’re going to make a lot of runs, it shouldn’t be based on that.

“I could rattle off more players comfortably that I’d put way ahead, they just didn’t play 30 years, that’s the difference,” he explained.

“I’m chancy, I like to take the game on, I suppose, I love putting bowlers on the back foot and gaining the upper hand early.
