Goondiwindi councillor Rob McKenzie, who chairs the LNP’s electoral council for Southern Downs and who has been tipped as a strong potential candidate, has been noncommittal, saying the “processes are there to ensure everyone who is interested in nominating has the opportunity to do so”.

Meanwhile, former National Farmers’ Federation president and Stanthorpe farming identity Brent Finlay has said he won’t rule out standing as the next LNP candidate for Southern Downs, but says at this point he hasn’t “given it serious thought”.

Current Southern Downs councillor Cameron Gow, who is an LNP member, last week told the Free Times he would consider nominating for Southern Downs “if approached by the party”.

He said this week “a number of local people” had approached him and had encouraged him to run, but he has not as yet formally nominated.

Deputy Mayor Jo McNally, also an LNP member, has declined to comment and fellow LNP member Cr Vic Pennisi has said he would not put himself forward.

MORE possible contenders have emerged to contest Lawrence Springborg’s state seat of Southern Downs following the veteran MP’s announcement that he will not stand at the next State Election.

And while Mr Springborg’s LNP has given prospective candidates until mid-January to stick their hand up, One Nation will announce its candidate for Southern Downs this Sunday 18 December.

Mr Springborg announced on Saturday 3 December that he would not re-contest the seat at the next

Queensland election - due in January 2018 - but has not ruled out a tilt at the Senate in the Federal Election due in July 2019.

Speculation continues that Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk may go to the polls well ahead of time, possibly early in the New Year, with both the major parties fretting over the rise in support for One Nation in Queensland.

Stanthorpe police reports Public nuisances arrested A NUMBER of people were charged on the weekend with drunken, disorderly behaviour in the vicinity of licensed premises. Just after midnight on Saturday police were called by security at the Central Hotel regarding a male and female who refused to leave the premises when directed. Upon attendance the two had left but were located nearby, however when police endeavoured to speak with the 47-year-old female she became hostile and abusive towards police resulting in her arrest. While arresting this person police were called back to the Central Hotel to deal with two males, both overseas tourists, fighting.

The two men, aged 21 and 22, were transported to the Stanthorpe Watchhouse where they were charged with committing a public nuisance offence.

AT about 2.30pm on Sunday, police intercepted a vehicle in Ellwood Road, Appletho-

rpe, for the purpose of a roadside drug test.

The driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old man, was identified as being wanted on seven outstanding warrants as well as nine burglary and dishonesty offences committed primarily on the Gold Coast. The offender decamped from police on the roadside, however after a short chase he was arrested and handcuffed for resisting police and transported to Warwick Watchhouse where the warrants were executed. The male is expected to be charged with the outstanding offences.

Childcare premises Police are seeking information regarding damage caused to Cool Kids Childcare in Marsh Street, Stanthorpe. Sometime on Thursday night, offenders broke a gate and smashed a sliding door of the premises. No entry was gained to the building. Anyone with information should call the Stanthorpe Police on 4681 6400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

One Nation gains ground From Page 1 Mr Finlay runs a family traprock sheepmeat, wool and beef property ‘Cooinda’ west of Stanthorpe and stepped down as NFF leader in May this year after more than 10 years in senior roles with the nation’s premier agri-political lobby group and has since been focusing on his farming and other business interests.

He told the Free Times he was “flattered” by suggestions he should have a tilt at Queensland politics, but said no formal or even informal approach had been made to him by the LNP as yet, along with declining to confirm or deny he is a current member of the party.

“I haven’t given it (Southern Downs) any serious thought, but I would never rule out anything to do with politics,” Mr Finlay said.

“I have a huge respect for anyone who does put their hand up, and I have the utmost respect for Lawrence Springborg and his integrity.”

Mr Finlay said the political landscape in Australia and overseas had changed “significantly” in the last 18 months, with Brexit, Donald Trump and the further rise of Pauline Hanson and One Nation.

“It’s easy to be a populist and say populist things - real policy is much, much harder,” Mr Finlay said.

“You’ve got to have the facts, the science and the costings - real policy is how you change the world.”

Mr Finlay has extensive international negotiating experience in the trade arena, and says Queensland does not currently have “the right political climate for investment”.

The Free Times contacted a number of candidates who stood unsuccessfully for the Southern Downs Regional Council election earlier this year - but came close - to see if they had any interest in a crack at state politics.

Julia Keogh, recently elected as president of the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, ruled out running for the seat, telling the Free Times she has “her hands full” but said the Southern Downs region had “enormous potential” which needed to be driven forward.

Warwick real estate agent Darryl Evans has said he would “consider” running, having stood in the past in the mayoral and councillor ballots.

Nominations for the LNP candidacy close at 5pm on Monday 16 January.

LNP State Director Lincoln Folo would not comment this week if any nominations had already been received.

The ALP and the Greens have said they would not open nominations for Southern Downs until next year.

By Jeremy Sollars THE Queensland Ambulance Service will meet with the operators of Gap Creek Farmstay at Tregony north of Warwick tomorrow, Friday 16 December, to discuss an ongoing spate of motorbike accidents.

As reported last week in the Free Times, dozens of injuries to riders visiting the popular venue this year have seen ambulances from Warwick and the RACQ LifeFlight helicopters called multiple times in what some are beginning to see as a potentially life-threatening drain on resources.

QAS Assistant Commissioner Rod Sheather will meet with brothers Matt and Ben Window who jointly run the family business, to discuss ways to “potentially reduce the workload” of the emergency services.

An incident on the weekend of 3-4 December partly related to ambulance resources being tied up at Gap Creek Farmstay involved a 13-year-old boy who was injured playing cricket in Warwick around 1.40pm on the Saturday.

The boy - who was struck in the eye with a cricket ball - was rushed to Warwick Hospital, but was forced to wait for more than four hours for an ambulance to transport him to hospital in Brisbane.

The boy suffered a blood clot from the injury with pressure from the clot constricting his optic nerve, causing fears he could lose his sight.

A source close to the boy’s family, who declined to be named, said hospital staff advised him one of three available Warwick ambulances had been diverted to Gap Creek Farmstay after the boy’s arrival at

Warwick Hospital and the other two were attending incidents at Leyburn and Karara.

The child was eventually taken to Brisbane by an ambulance diverted from Stanthorpe and surgery on the eye was not required.

Ben Window told the Free Times this week they welcomed the discussions with QAS. He said many regular riders from outside the area visited Gap Creek Farmstay as they “felt safer” than in unsupervised dirt bike environments like State Forests and urban industrial estates.

“Everyone who comes here gets an induction and a handbook and they sign an indemnity,” he said.

“Our tracks are very heavily supervised, and if someone has an accident we close down that section of track, and if they believe they require an

ambulance then we contact them.

“We would never contact the emergency services without the rider’s consent.”

Mr Window said south-east Queensland had the highest percentage of dirt bike ownership in Australia, with an estimated 250,000 bikes.

He said dirt bike riding was an inherently dangerous sport, and riders who took things too far were cautioned by Gap Creek Farmstay staff if they felt there was a need.

Mr Window said his own calculations showed that only around .05 per cent of all their visitors - which could number up to 400 on a typical weekend - sustained an injury.

He also said December tended to be their quietest period with people saving money for Christmas, but January would be busy with school holidays.

Bursaries for tertiary students THE Condamine Valley-Warwick Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association is once again offering to give two first-year university or TAFE students from the region a big helping hand in 2017.

The branch has for many years offered bursaries to students entering their first year of university or other tertiary study and who are struggling financially.

Two $1000 bursaries are on offer this year, with applications closing at the end of January.

The bursaries are offered by QCWA branches across the state.

Both female and male students can apply for the bursaries.

Bursary applicants need to submit written proof of achievement, the need for financial support, three

character references, details of the course and a short resume.

Students must reside within the QCWA Border Division area, which includes Warwick, Stanthorpe and all other communities within the Southern Downs Regional Council area, along with Clifton, Inglewood and Texas.

Applications close on 31 January 2017 and forms are available from the QCWA Tea Room on Grafton Street - next to Crisps Coaches from Monday to Friday between 9am and 2pm, or by calling 4661 8117 or 4661 4206.

The QCWA Tea Room, which offers very affordable lunch treats including sandwiches and salad rolls, will be closed between Boxing Day and Monday 9 January.

THE Southern Downs Regional Council claims it has taken steps to ensure Allora’s GrainX operation complies with conditions set down in its approval, following a meeting with the company last week.

As reported in the Free Times in our last two editions, Allora residents on Herbert Street, across the road from the GrainX Australia grain handling facility, have spoken of their lives as virtual “prisoners” in their own homes for the past five years.

Dust - including toxic chemical residue - and noise from the site have turned their daily lives into a living hell since the facility was approved by the Southern Downs Regional Council in 2011.

Health impacts from chemical use, sleep deprivation, stress and de-valued properties sum up life on Herbert Street and other nearby streets in “The Best Little Town on the Downs”.

There also concerns over the wellbeing of students at Allora State School and residents of The Homestead Southern Cross Care nursing home just a few hundred metres from GrainX on nearby Forde Street.

A council spokeswoman said GrainX had been directed to use a water truck “on all affected roads as a means of dust suppression and to treat dust nuisance”, including Herbert and South Street, and to “ensure that the street watering does not result in excessive water impacting on road verges or pooling in roadside drains”.

The spokeswoman said GrainX had also been ordered to have “suitable high

Sale of ARM newspapers approved by regulator

By Jeremy Sollars WARWICK charity FoodAssist will be forced to scale back its operation in the New Year as it continues to struggle with finding support.

As reported in the Free Times in late November, the not-for-profit organisation has been helping Warwick and surrounds for the past two years, but a lack of sponsors means it will have to drop back from providing cheap food hampers five days a week to three in January.

FoodAssist operates from a shed on Percy Street and volunteers grow fresh fruit and vegies in the backyard.

Warehouse supervisor Jenny Creed this week said she was still desperate to get in contact with any businesses that would like to sponsor FoodAssist - and they need more volunteers.

“FoodAssist Warwick is reaching out to the community in the hope that by working together we can keep the roof over our heads no joke,” Jenny told the Free Times in November.

“If things don’t start to pick up, the shed we call home will no longer be ours.

“This shed has given us the opportunity of a lifetime as well as cover and we do not want to leave.

“Please let everyone know that our hampers are available for everyone - no concession card or referral required.”

AUSTRALIA’S competition and consumer watchdog has approved the sale of APN’s newspaper arm Australian Regional Media (ARM) to Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

The announcement was made last Thursday 8 December but the $36.6m sale must still be ratified by the Foreign Investment Review Board, which has declined to comment publicly on the timeframe for its consideration of the sale.

ARM owns regional titles in Queensland and northern New South Wales, including the Warwick Daily News, the Stanthorpe Border Post and the Toowoomba Chronicle.

POLICE have identified a number of suspects involved in two assaults on children in Warwick on Monday, 12 December.

Two children were taken to Warwick Hospital after separate assaults in broad daylight on Monday, in a shocking start to the school holidays.

In the first incident a teenage boy was allegedly attacked and punched by a number of males on Grafton Street near the Acacia Avenue carpark crossing across from Rose City Shoppingworld around 12.30pm.

A Warwick Police spokesman said Child Protection Unit (CPU) officers had spoken to the victim and his mother but a formal complaint has not yet been made.

In a second incident, which police believe may be related to the first assault, a 10-yearold boy was allegedly set upon by a number of attackers in the Aldi carpark at the corner of Albion and Fitzroy streets.

The 10-year-old victim has made a formal complaint to the police.

A police spokesman said up to 10 potential suspects, all juveniles, had been identified in relation to the incidents and the CPU officers were continuing with their investigations.

“We now have a new footpath to enter the building from Marsh Street to meet accessibility requirements and plumbing work has been done to the external disabled access toilet,” Mr Bell said.

“The wiring for the new automated smoke detection and alarm system is also currently being installed.”

Further works to be done include the installation of a ducted air-conditioning system within the Main Auditorium and Supper Room.

THE Stanthorpe Community Op-Shop will hold its inaugural Community Children’s Christmas Party this Saturday, 17 December, at the shop in Alley Arcade at 17 Railway Terrace, Stanthorpe.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council officers will prepare a report to the council on a proposal to have the Glengallan Gates in Leslie Park in Warwick returned to Glengallan Homestead, which celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2017.

The historic gates, at the corner of Fitzroy and Guy streets, were gifted to the City of Warwick in 1940 by the then owners of Glengallan Homestead to mark the centenary of settlement in the Warwick district.

Council officers met with Glengallan Homestead Trust representatives on Monday to discuss the move. The next Southern Downs Regional Council meeting will be held in Warwick tomorrow, 16 December, in the council chambers on Fitzroy Street at 9am.

RESTORATION of the fire-damaged Stanthorpe Civic Centre is continuing with a now expected completion date of 26 January 2017.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s Manager Community Services and Major Projects Michael Bell said that the date had been pushed back from 1 January due to the need to replace nearly all timber flooring within the building.

“There was an initial possibility that the flooring in the Main Auditorium would recover from the water used to extinguish the fire however, unfortunately, this has not been the case,” he said.

“It has been confirmed that the Main Auditorium flooring needs to be replaced, so now it is being replaced with a similar hardwood.

“It does, unfortunately, mean the timeframe of the project has been extended, due to the availability of the timber, however it will have a positive impact on the long-term future of this community asset.”

The Civic Centre has been closed since a fire gutted its kitchen in March this year.

The building has undergone works since this time, including asbestos removal and stripping back of interior damage.

Mr Bell said that contractors were working hard to progress the restoration of the building and had now completed a number of works including new framework in the foyer ceiling and internal walls, installation of insulation to the ceiling and replacement of electrical wiring and sound equipment.

The kitchen has also had its roof raised and the timber floor has been completely replaced in the Supper Room.

Vicki ferries the papers Casey’s tips

By Jeremy Sollars WE know our readers love getting their weekly copy of the Southern Free Times - but the chances are you don’t know what happens behind the scenes to make sure all of our 22,000 plus readers every week get their hands on the latest SFT. Vicki Thompson has been part of the Free Times distribution team for the last eight years and her main task is getting the paper out in the Stanthorpe and Tenterfield areas.

While most of our readers are sound asleep in bed in the wee hours of Thursday morning, Vicki is making the trek from our distribution shed in Warwick down the New England Highway with several thousand copies of the Free Times in tow.

This follows several hours of prepara-

tory work in the shed late on Wednesday night with our distribution manager Lisa Crouch and our other dedicated deliverers who tirelessly insert catalogues by hand into the newspaper and bundle it up ready to hit the streets.

Vicki does the home delivery run in Stanthorpe as well as “bulk drops” to businesses across the Granite Belt and into Tenterfield - and gets it done by 5am Thursday, “weather permitting”.

“I’ve pretty well got it down pat these days,” laughs Vicki.

“I aim to get them all out by 5am unless it’s raining, which can hold things up.

“I do the first drop at Dalveen on the way down and my other stops include Vincenzo’s and the Summit shop, and on the other side of Stanthorpe I do the Blue Topaz Caravan Park and business drops

at Glen Aplin, Ballandean, WallangarraJennings and then on to Tenterfield.

“In Stanthorpe on the home delivery run, I have people I see sitting and waiting for me to show up with the paper!”

Again weather permitting, Vicki usually hits the hay back home in Warwick around 9am on Thursday for a wellearned camp.

Plants and compost worm products are still available at the garden on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, with entry through the Tyrel Street gates.

Whistle Stop Heritage and Community Garden will be closing for the Christmas/ New Year period on Thursday 22 December and re-opening on Wednesday 4 January 2017.

However there will be volunteers at the garden over the festive period for watering and harvesting.

The support received from you allows us to continue to run the garden, as we do not receive

funding other than that raised by our enterprise.

Time to go native Casey’s tips

ARIES—March 21-April 20

at this time of year.

South Australia and Tasmania share a beautiful white flowering shrub, Bursaria spinosa.

It is covered in small white flowers in spring and summer and then decorative small brown fruits that are useful in floral arrangements.

It is a small (about three metres) prickly shrub with shiny dark green leaves.

It is native to all states except W.A., very hardy, grown from seed or cutting, and will grow in almost any conditions so would be a decorative inclusion in a native garden.

Victoria claims Prostanthera iasianthos, a bush/tree from two to 10 metres as its Christmas flower. Compact as a shrub it has white, mauve or pink flowers in summer.

Truly and adaptable plant, it also grows naturally everywhere except the N.T. and W.A., is tolerant of shade and full sun and fast growing and propagated from cuttings.

The Western Australian Christmas tree, Nuytsia floribunda, is a truly spectacular tree and once seen never forgotten.

It grows to 10 metres and has sprays of brilliant yellow flowers.

It is a semi parasitic tree needing a host plant for some nutrition.

Because of this it is very hard to propagate but there has been some success in raising them to flowering stage in Perth using strawberries and grasses as hosts.

I am sure there will be more work done in developing and understanding the growing requirements of this lovely tree that appears to like full sun and be frost resistant.

It has been growing in very sandy areas where I have seen it around Perth so maybe I will never be able to have one growing in Warwick.

I have always thought I would like to grow a wattle variety to flower in each month, but with limited space in town, I now realise that will never happen… not even one for each season, sigh ... but maybe I can grow all of the Christmas bushes and can substitute the Albany woolly bush for W.A. and have the Queensland orchid inside for a table decoration - now there’s a plan!

FREE TIMES gardening columnist BEATRICE HAWKINS suggests going native for Christmas this year in her latest musings on all things gardening...

DID you know that there is a really great Australian native for use as a Christmas tree?

It has all the shape and style of the traditional pine used at Christmas time but is soft to the touch and I think very special.

The Albany Woolly bush, Adenathos sericeus, from W.A. is an absolute favourite of mine and can be grown very satisfactorily in a pot and used as a living Christmas tree.

In a pot it will require more water than in the garden but avoid over watering as they don’t like wet feet.

As a Christmas tree they should only be in a well-lit room for about two weeks as they don’t like indoor light.

If you are someone who decorates the tree in early December and doesn’t put the decorations away until well into January they are not for you as an indoor tree but would be perfect on a verandah or any outdoor area.

It is a fabulous native with soft grey green foliage and inconspicuous red flowers from spring through to autumn attracting nectar feeding birds and taking very little water once established in a garden.

A different option for Christmas.

In well-drained soil they are drought and moderately frost tolerant.

They take pruning at any time of year, provide great foliage for flower arrangements and grown together make a good hedge.

They should only be kept in a pot for one year and then either moved into a larger pot or planted out.

I plan to have one growing in my garden ready to decorate next Christmas.

Also, did you know that each Australian state has its own Christmas bush or flower?

Queensland has a lovely evergreen terrestrial white orchid, Calanthe triplicate.

The flower spikes are upright and can be up to a metre long.

It flowers late December and January in cool moist conditions. This would be a good inclusion in a shade house.

NSW has the spectacular red Christmas bush Ceratopetalum gummiferum that grows from south of Sydney to the gold coast.

It has small white flowers early in spring followed by pink to bright red swollen calyces in summer.

It likes well drained soil and a sunny position for good colour and can be propagated by seed or cutting.

If you are lucky enough to get a really good red bunch try striking some cuttings as this, or cloning, is the best way to get a good colour.

They are a very good decorative small specimen tree, a great cut flower and for sale in florists

Networking and fine food WARWICK’S own community radio station Rainbow FM hosted the last Business Network of Warwick (BNOW) event for 2016 on Tuesday night, 13 December. Dozens of local business operators came along to the Rainbow FM studios at the top of Willi Street to enjoy an evening of networking and fine food overlooking Warwick.

The BNOW events have become a regular and popular series of get-togethers and will continue in 2017 with the first one planned for February.

Local businesses are encouraged to sponsor and host a BNOW event which is also a great way of showcasing what they do and raising their profile.

Top Test cricket ahead The

WHEN this edition hits your front yard, like the Aussie cricketers I will be going through my warm up paces in preparation for the historic day night Test at the Gabba. There is plenty of buzz around the match with ticket sales at a premium.

It is good news for the Gabba. I have no doubt curator Kevin Mitchell Jnr will produce another stunning Gabba Test match wicket however Cricket Australia this week announced that the order of the cricket world will return to normal next year when the Gabba will once again host the opening Test of the Ashes series. No matter how successful this day night Test, it seems that the Poms next year will only play one day night event and that will be in Adelaide.

There is one big positive for the Aussies however in the revised schedule and that will see our Test players able to play three full Shield games as they prepare for the summer of International competition. With the Ashes on the line that has to be a good thing.

In the meantime, like many other cricket tragics I cannot wait for this Test. It should prove to be spectacular, and I am sure the ICC will be looking closely at the day night format at the end of the Australian summer.

The Pakistan side showed they are up for the challenge with a big win over the Cricket Australia XI in their pre-test game at Cazaly’s in Cairns last week. The visitors are expecting the Gabba wicket to provide plenty of bounce and their quicks are sure to deliver their share of short quick stuff for our batsmen. Matt Renshaw who debuted in Adelaide will no doubt be keen to show that he has more than block and stay tactics in his bag of tricks and on his home turf hopefully we will see more of what this young man has to offer.

Australia will be defending an impressive Gabba winning record and hopefully the day/ might format lives up to expectations.

Talk is beginning to turn to the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. That of course means there cannot be many sleeps left between now and a visit from that Man in the Red Suit, so as we all prepare for our Christmas celebrations next week we will take a look at the Year that has been.

Hopefully, that will include another iconic win for the Aussies at the Gabba.

- Casey QCC OVER 40s VICTORY IT IS several years since Stanthorpe and the Queensland Cricketers Club Over 40s teams have played due to scheduling difficulties and adverse weather conditions. At their last outing, the Neil “Wickets” O’Connor trophy was retained by the Stanthorpe side, but last Saturday in perfect conditions for cricket and on a well-prepared wicket the visitors sought and got their revenge.

In an entertaining game with plenty of friendly banter, the QCC side posted a good win despite Stanthorpe boasting several players still active in the current fixtures. Stanthorpe unfortunately suffered injuries to a couple of their key players.

Alan Cameron was forced from the batting crease with a hamstring injury after attempting a run early in the innings. He was joined shortly after by Peter Nimmo, who spectators and players alike thought had been shot from the grassy knoll as he collapsed on the wicket with a similar injury.

Good batting performances from Ross Lupton who showed plenty of class and Greg McKenzie who has not played for several seasons helped Stanthorpe to a total of 163.

The visiting batsmen took the game to the Stanthorpe bowlers and several of their top order batsmen retired after scoring 40 odd runs in accordance with the rules of engagement.

John Fitzgerald and Gill Chapman who many older readers would remember as a top class half back for Wests in the Brisbane Rugby League competition, all batted well and retired undefeated.

The QCC captain Neville Taylor presented Greg McKenzie with the Stanthorpe Man of the Match after an impressive performance with bat and ball. After his performance, McKenzie is understood to now be fielding requests to return to playing in the Stanthorpe fixtures.

President of the QCC side Peter Chisholm returned from an extended 27 month layoff due to ill health to play in the match and was full of praise for the organisers of the game and said the visitors always enjoyed playing in Stanthorpe.

“The facilities are second to none, up there with the best we play anywhere in Queensland.

“The wicket and field are first class as is the hospitality. “Now Lew Cooper has the QCC players and the game back on track we look forward to defending our win next year,” Chisholm said.

One of the most impressive performances in the game came from neither batsmen nor bowlers but from young Jordan Lanza who acted as my cohort umpire for the game. Lanza, who is an impressive talent as a cricketer, showed plenty of ticker out in the middle. It was no doubt a reasonably daunting task for a teenager to umpire this game and Lanza, as he does when he has bat in hand did not take a backward step showing plenty

of confidence in his decisions. Hats off to the young man who we all know has a big future in the game.

Following the game, the visiting players enjoyed their annual Christmas party at O’Mara’s Hotel where they were treated to an unexpected visit from a bloke in a red suit bearing gifts.

WILLIAMS WINS MEMORIAL TROPHY WALLANGARRA golfers were out in numbers last weekend playing a single stableford competition for the Paul Hampstead Memorial Trophy.

It proved to be a great competition with only two points separating the winner and the fifthplaced finisher.

S. Williams proudly claimed the win and the trophy and was closely followed by M. Ellis. In the run downs, T. Murphy, S. Hampstead and K. Williams finished tied.

Steve Hampstead claimed the nearest the pin at the ninth while T. Murphy had success at the hard hitting 11th and M. Ellis snared the 15th.

This Saturday is the annual Hamper Day. It is a 4BBB comp with partners drawn after the game.

Everyone intending to play are asked to bring along some goodies to add to the prizes and ensure that no one goes home empty handed.

JONES ON TOP IN CLOSE FINISH A COUNTBACK between three players was required to find a winner in Saturday’s Stanthorpe Golf club’s Single Stableford sponsored by Max

Hunter. Keith Jones Eric McLellan and Ian Henderson all finished their round on 40 points. Following the countback, Keith Jones was declared the winner relegating Eric McLellan to the runners-up position while Ian Henderson had to settle for a spot in the rundowns despite a good round. The men’s run down went to 38 with Richard Reardon, Wes Smith and Greg Fraser each collecting a ball.

There was also a close finish in the Ladies event. Rachael Hendry eventually won with 38 points just one point in advance of her nearest rival Linda Kelly (37). Lyn Ludlow and Kay Webb both featured in the ladies’ run down.

Pin shots went to Daryl Boekholt at three, Eric McLellan at 12 and Mark Hendry at 17. Rachael Hendry collected the ladies pin at three and the ladies approach shot at 17. Neta Thouard collected the ladies pin at 12 before being out for the count on 13.

Len Leigh (1/10), Matt Waterworth (5/14) and Keith Jones (9/18) all picked up Pro Pins.

This weekend play will be sponsored by the Stanthorpe Community Bank and the format a single stableford. Tee off is scheduled for 10.30am and there is a time sheet on the board at the club house.

The time sheet is also out for the Annual Boxing Day Classic. A three Ball Ambrose, will once again be sponsored by Michael Hancock, Tony Herman and Wes Smith Building.

This event is open to all however the field will be limited. If you are planning to shake off the excesses of Christmas Day with a round of golf you should nominate your team now to avoid the disappointment of missing out on one the club’s most enjoyable days. There is already a time sheet on the board for this event.

The Inglewood Sporting Shooters Open Day last Saturday was great success with visitors for Yelarbon and Goondiwindi converging on the range.

On Sunday the club held their annual Christmas shoot. It was a triathlon event with all competitors racing against the clock as they shot five small metal silhouette targets with pistol and lever action rifle. This was followed by five clay targets and five shots in minuscule paper targets.

Number of shots taken irrelevant however the results were not.

Taking out the event was club stalwart Tom Donald in a time of time of one minute 25 seconds. Donald finished marginally in advance of Stephanie Dudgeon, - her time one minute 41 seconds while Michael Dudgeon was not far away with a time of one minute 51 seconds.

The range will be open for casual use over the Christmas holiday period with no scheduled events until the New Year. Members wish everyone a safe and merry Christmas.

PLENTY TO ENJOY AT SPORTERS SPORTERS were out and about last Sunday enjoying an early morning Christmas barbecue brekkie before a round of golf and all the fun of the annual Christmas party. After recently returning from a short break, Aaron Simmers took the golfing honours ahead of runner in Mark Lynam who also picked up the Best Gross. Run-downs went to Paul Armstrong and Terry Byrnes. Julie Page flew the flag for the Ladies claiming the Pin Shot on the 12th. There were no takes for the pin shot at the 17th. Dick Hilton and Matthew Beale did not leave empty handed, each absconding with a meat tray.

It was more than just the usual morning of great social golf and the annual Christmas knees up for members. The landscape at Sporters will never be quite the same. After more years than he would care to admit too, Clarky stood down from his position with Sporters, and in appreciation of all that he has done for the club, he was presented with a farewell gift. Clarky is certainly one of a kind and as members wished him well and waved him goodbye, they know there will never be another and he will be greatly missed.

Sporters will tee-off this will at the normal time of 7.30-8.30am but of course there will be no Sporters on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Never fear things will be back to normal on 8 January.

Local Sport TANNYMOREL BOWLERS KEPT BUSY IT WAS another busy week on the green for the members of the Tannymorel Bowls Club. Two teams from the club made it through to the finals of the District triples. Congratulations to Aaron Pete and Butzy and also Tuck, Mick and Pete Collis on a great effort.

Last Saturday the club held a special fundraiser for Tori a young lady battling cancer. Tori is a close member of our local larrikin Greenkeeper who wanted to do something a little bit special to help Tori. A lot of effort was put into the day, and special thanks to Lorna T for all of her efforts.

The day was a great success and the team of Karla McDonald, Ian McDonald Jeff Davis and Bill Lee took home the main prize. Runners-up were Penny, Pat Gainey and Barb and Greg Cross.

Games finished like this - Kia Walsh Shannon McDonald Di Welsh and Dave Butz defeated Julie Buse, Dane Brent McDonald and Myrtle 2320. Karla McDonald, Ian McDonald Jeff Davies and Bill Lee teamed up to defeat Brendan Walsh Coral Price Maria McDonald and Walshy 19-13.

Jean Lambert Jim lamb Donna Farmer and Sandy Wallace scored a 15-13 win over their opponents Rachel Inmon Nick Dowie Amy Love and Geoff Farmer.

Penny pat Gainey and Barb and Greg Cross were too slick for their opposite numbers Kerry Tori Sue Butz and Koala winning 22-17. Rickie Donna Thompson and Jean Callum played a 13all draw in their game against Georgia Kiss and BP. Peter Thompson John Kiss and Tuck scored a 19-15 win over Brandan Murray Al Buse and Aaron McKinney. Dr John did mention on a few occasions that the only reason his team won was his superior ability and the fact that he was the heart and soul and backbone of that team. Peter Thompson he said was hopeless and all Tuck seemed concerned about was “how good he looked.”

It was a most successful day with plenty of light hearted banter and fun had by all the players. Special thanks to everyone who donated prizes and Carey Brothers who donated the meat for the barbecue.

MARYVALE SCORE COMFORTABLE WIN MARYVALE Condamine pushed their premiership credentials this season when they defeated Wheatvale at Sade on Sunday. Maryvale set the premiers a big run chase of 249, but not before the loss of three early wickets. It was left to Keiren and Pat Bourke to steady the innings. When Pat Bourke was dismissed at the drinks break, Maryvale were sitting in the uneasy position of four wickets down with only 75 runs on the scorecard.

Mick Bourke came to the crease following the drinks break and the pair put together a fifthwicket partnership of 123. Keiran Bourke topscored with 90 while his batting partner contributed a solid 78 runs. Tom Bourke chimed in at the end with a cameo performance in the final five overs of the innings, adding a valuable 32 runs.

Wheatvale’s bowling spearhead Chris Cantwell suffered a back injury very early in his opening spell. Col O’Brien finished with two wickets for 28 runs while Carter Bilbrough also bowled well, finishing with 1/27 from his eight-over spell. Late in the innings, in reply Wheatvale were dismissed for 146. A standout in their innings with the bat was Brendan Malone who fell seven runs short of a century. Wheatvale desperately needed a big partnership to challenge Maryvale, but it was not to be as the Maryvale bowlers asserted their authority.

In other Warwick fixtures, Colts had an 80run win over Redbacks. Cam Peterson remained 73 not out for Colts while Jacob Gross continued his recent good form, scoring 61. Tyhe Clarkson finished with three wickets. Morgan Gilchrist and Shayne Watson each claimed two wickets.

In reply, Redbacks batsmen Same Waetford and The Clarkson scored in the thirties, but the Colts bowlers took control of the game and dismissed their opponents for 135. Cam Peterson bowled well, taking 2/11 and Sean Bryson finished with 3/24.

Allora also had a good win over Inglewood.

Allora scored 175 in their innings despite good bowling performances from young leggie Jamien Smith who picked up another five wickets. He was well supported by Scott Beard who took four wickets. The Inglewood batsmen struggled when they came to the crease and with four ducks in the scorebook, a win was always going to be difficult. Tyler Wolff and Shane Hooper put up some opposition with a 50-run sixth-wicket stand, but Allora was always in control. Best of their bowlers was Matthew Kiernan who finished with 2/34 from a seven-over spell while Nick Goltz and McLennan each took two wickets.

This weekend’s Warwick fixtures will be the last for two weeks as play gives way to the Christmas break.

TENTERFIELD NOTCH UP A WIN TENTERFIELD scored an upset win in the Stanthorpe fixtures played on Saturday when they defeated Wanderers. The visitors also claimed a much- needed bonus point. The day did not start well for Tenterfield who looked likely to be short of players early in the game, but with some late arrivals and the assistance of Alan Donges who skipped from the Queensland Cricketers Club side to the Tenterfield team, the visitors were able to post their first win of the season. Wanderers who were missing some of their stronger players set Tenterfield a 142-run chase, and it never really looked to be enough on the good wicket at Sheahan Oval. Sean Merchant was a standout in the Tenterfield side as they posted a much-needed victory.

WARWICK EAST BOWLS On Saturday our final social bowls for the year was played, with both singles and pairs games. The overall winner on the day was D. Hughes, with J. Harslett and D. Weir being equal runners-up.

The jackpot failed to go off yet again and will stand at $66, plus $1 per bowler on our next social bowls afternoon. With the green being renovated, the club will be taking a break for the rest of this year. The club will resume with our monthly triples on Thursday 5 January, starting at the usual time of 12.30pm. Social bowls will resume on Saturday 7 January, starting at 1pm. As these will be the last notes for the year, I will take this opportunity on behalf of the board of management to thank all members and visitors who supported us during the year and wish you all a very enjoyable Christmas break and good bowling in 2017.

A fine day again today with light variable winds and overcast conditions for the shooters. Next week on Sunday 18 December, the club will be holding our Christmas shoot, which will be a 500 yard fly shoot followed by a barbecue, remember it will be a 7.30am start for signing on.
