By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE woman responsible for bringing the massively successful jewellery brand Pandora to Australia has partnered with a new jewellery brand and has opened the first Australian Alex and Ani store at Fountain Gate perfectly timed for Christmas.

Karin Adcock, founder and CEO of House of Brands, launched the new store in November and said Fountain Gate was the perfect place to do it.

“We had a list of about 15 shopping centres we would like to be in, and it is hard to get a good site in shopping centres because stores are always full,” Ms Adcock said.

“Fountain Gate came up with a good location first, and we said ’no’ to a lot of locations that weren’t right.

“This is a very good shopping centre for our demographics and better and more suitable than somewhere like Chadstone.

“We stand out more in Fountain Gate, and for our first store it is a great location for us.”

The store offers a gorgeous range of jewellery including bracelets, bangles, necklaces, rings and earrings. The eco-conscious collection is unique and meaningful, designed to positively empower.

Ms Adcock said Alex and Ani was an unique brand with a strong sense of worth that gives back to the community while offering a beautiful product.

“The jewellery is made out of recycled brass, recycled door handles, picture frames and things like that with a gold or silver finish so it has a life of its own before and now is jewellery,” she said.

“It is made in US with love. It is made on Rhode Island which used to be the jewellery capital of the world.

“It is infused with positive energy, and is all about positivity and meanings that connects people with lots of symbols that have many meanings for different people.

“The last pillar is Charity by Design. A very big part of our business is charity, and it is very exciting to have such a strong affinity with charities and to give back to the community.”

THE long-awaited upgrades to Thompsons Road have officially begun, with MPs turning the first sod on Monday 12 December.

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera joined Roads Minister Luke Donnellan, Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny with representatives of the construction company and Federal Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus’s office to launch the project.

The State Government awarded the tender for the construction of the first stage of the upgrades to civil engineering frim BMD in October this year.

The first stage of the $175 million upgrade will see the level crossing near Merinda Park Train Station in Lyndhurst have a six-lane bridge constructed ease congestion and make the crossing safer.

Roughly 19,000 cars and trucks use the Thompsons Road level crossing each day and there have been 156 road accidents reported between Dandenong-Frankston Road and BerwickCranbourne Road in the last five years.

This part of the project will also see the 1.2km stretch of Thompsons Road between Marriott Boulevard and the South Gippsland Highway duplicated.

Minister for Roads and Road safety Luke Donnellan said the new and improved Thompsons Road will make travel a lot easier for people living in the south-east. “We’re putting people first and cutting travel times, boosting safety and supporting the south-east’s growing population,� he said. “Thompsons Road is in the middle of one of Australia’s fastest growing regions and this project is important to getting people to their daily destinations efficiently and safely.�

Community vigilance funds go towards addressing community crime concerns

By Victoria Stone-Meadows MINISTER for Police Lisa Neville has addressed concerns within the community that funding to the Neighbourhood Watch program in Casey and across the state had been cut.

In a statement provided to Star News, Ms Neville assured the residents of Casey that the Neighbourhood Watch program continues to be funded and operational.

Ms Neville said the confusion surrounding funding for the Neighbourhood Watch had been caused by an announcement of extra funding for all community safety programs.

“The Community Safety Statement includes $5.6 million in funding for 12 new community

safety networks, and additional funding for Neighbourhood Watch and targeted campaigns

by Crime Stoppers,” Ms Neville said.

“These initiatives are part of our plan to improve community connectedness with Victoria Police.”

A statement released by Shadow Minister for Community Safety Edward O’Donohue claimed that the State Government had not renewed funding to Neighbourhood Watch Groups.

“Neighbourhood Watch and its hardworking volunteers have served the community for decades and deserve our support."

“Despite experiencing a crime tsunami with

many in the community living in fear, Daniel Andrews cut funding to the respected and proven Neighbourhood Watch,” he said.

However, Ms Neville has said that Mr O’Donohue’s comments simply were not true and the government was committed to continuing funding the Neighbourhood Watch Program.

“In our first year of government, we refunded Neighbourhood Watch with a base grant of $150,000,” she said.

“It’s about bringing together police, community members and local businesses to prevent crime and victimisation before it occurs, and reduce harm in our communities.”

CASEY city council has received funding from the State Government for a new integrated children’s centre.

Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos announced the $1.6 million of funding on Tuesday 13 December along with Cranbourne MP Jude Perera.

The new Livingston Family and Community Centre will be built in the Livingston Estate located along Berwick Cranbourne Road, and will have a variety of services including maternal and child health and family services and early learning.

The centre will be cofunded in a partnership between the State Government and the City of Casey, bringing much-needed children’s services to the growing community.

“Our local area has experienced a significant baby boom in recent years. Investments like this will pay enormous dividends to our local families for years to come,” Mr Perera said.

“High-quality early years education and care are vital to giving every child the best start in life. That’s why this government is transforming early childhood services.”

The funding comes as part of a $13.5 million investment from the government to help fund 25 child care centres and kindergartens across the state.

End-of-year get together THE Monash Health Cranbourne Community Mental Health Service has hosted another annual Christmas party for its clients.

The party was held at the Cranbourne Lawn Bowls club and featured a barbecue lunch, Father Christmas with some gifts for clients and their families, and a small singing group from the Berwick Church of Christ.

Afterwards the group tried some bowling.

The Christmas party has become a tradition that clients and staff enjoy and look forward to and allows all involved with the Cranbourne Community Mental Health Service to let their hair down.

Taking aim at courts THE grandfather of a Pakenham woman, who was found deceased in her home in 2014, has lashed out at the Drug Court of Victoria (DCV) for releasing her ex-partner Troy Boothey.

Mr Boothey was released from police custody and placed on a Drug Treatment Order (DTO) after appearing via videolink in the court on Thursday 8 December.

Boothey was a suspect in the death of Maddison Murphy-West, but was never arrested or charged.

Ms Murphy-West’s grandfather Gil Murphy was present in court on Thursday with other members of Maddison’s family, and said the decision to release Boothey was “just wrong.”

“This punishment is two years in the community, and if he stuffs it up he goes back to prison for seven days,” Mr Murphy said.

“It’s not really a deterrent for someone like him and they very rarely rescind these orders.”

Mr Boothey pleaded guilty to drugs and drug trafficking charges during his court appearance on Thursday, and agreed to undertake the drug treatment order in lieu of serving a prison sentence.

However, Mr Murphy, said the system of the drug court was ultimately flawed and offenders didn’t get sentences that fitted their crimes.

“There is a big problem in the drug court,” Mr Murphy said.

“I think the drug court is a complete failure, and they don’t do any good with it.”

“With only one magistrate in charge of it and this therapeutic justice approach they think they can rehabilitate everybody and if they get one in 10 that’s okay.”

“In the meantime, what happens to all

the victims? They get forgotten.”

The Drug Court of Victoria was established in May 2002 with a focus on rehabilitating offenders with drug or alcohol dependence with a view to reintegrating them into the community.

An evaluation of the Drug Court of Victoria conducted by professional services firm KPMG in 2014 however showed that the approach of the court was a successful model for offender rehabilitation.

The report’s analysis of re-offending while on a DTO over the evaluation period showed that 83 per cent of DCV clients did not re-offend while on their DTO. The number of times subsequent offences were committed ranged from one to eight, with an average of 3.55 per client.

The most frequently committed offences were theft-related offences, which accounted for 32 per cent of all re-offending while on the DTO.

Further analysis of the DCV and control group showed that after 12 months there was a significant difference in the number of re-offending between the two groups, Of the group that went through the DCV, 51 per cent re-offended compared to 74 per cent of the group that went through regular magistrate courts' channels.

After 24 months, the difference in the rate of re-offending grew to 56 per cent of the DCV group re-offending, compared to 85 per cent of the control group, a percentage drop of 29 per cent.

However, Mr Murphy believes that the drug court has the wrong approach to criminal justice and not everyone can be rehabilitated.

“The system needs an overhaul,” Mr Muphy said.

“There shouldn’t be drug court, and if there needs to be one, one person shouldn’t be in charge of all of drug court.”

Youngsters find the write stuff

More than 100 entries were received by council this year in the competition, open to students in all levels of secondary school.

The competition winners and finalists were announced on Wednesday 30 November at a ceremony where City of Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz passed on his congratulations.

“Thanks to everyone who put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, and shared their stories and poems - which can be a daunting thing to do particularly when it’s going to be judged,” he said.

“Council received so many wonderful

entries which were engaging, inspiring, entertaining and captured the imagination of our judges.”

Cr Aziz said he was very pleased to see the young people of Casey engaging in long form writing.

“In a time when creativity, opinions and thoughts are often expressed in no more than a few words or sentences on social media, it’s refreshing to see we’ve got so many young people in Casey who love to write and exercise their creative flair through writing, poetry and lyrics,” he said.

Letters Supreme arrogance CASEY council’s recent decision to scuttle a proposed meeting with the Victorian Multicultural Commission chairwoman Helen Kapalos has been made unilaterally and without any systemic evidence of public opinion.

This shows that many Casey councillors don’t really give a damn about what their residents and ratepayers think.

Neither the mayor of Casey Sam Aziz or Cr Rosalie Crestani, have any evidence that the local community rejects multiculturalism (see Cultural Clash by Cam Lucadou-Wells, 7 December, Berwick News).

What is even more disturbing is the fact that Casey councillors also passed a motion from Cr Crestani to explore a sister city relationship with Israel.

Why does the Mayor Sam Aziz and Cr Crestani want to develop a sister city relationship with Israel?

The southern-eastern suburbs have an unemployment rate of 8.1 per cent, there are people living in old cars, domestic violence, and increasing drug and gambling addiction problems and now Casey councillors sit around demonizing multiculturalism and idealizing Israel.

Israel, however, is a country lead by a Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who has been described as a “war criminal.”

Under Benjamin Netanyahu Israel has breached international law by abusing Palestinian prisoners and expanding Israeli settlements into Palestinian occupied territories.

Could it be that many of our councillors and mayor are really white supremacists like Donald Trump?

COULD lollypop-people at school crossings be taking a political stand next year?

As part of Casey Council’s call for more state funding for the $2.7 million program, a ‘lollypopper’ has told Star News that they may be asked to hand out the council’s propaganda, wear badges and rally on the steps of State Parliament.

The council has said it will mount a significant advocacy campaign of up to 12 months for the State Government to split the program’s costs 50:50.

Currently Casey is set to pay about 76 per cent of the program’s expenses in 2016-'17.

AN unco-operative under-age accused seems

to have languished in adult prison for months while awaiting trial at a Children's Court.

The court heard that the child’s lawyer had repeatedly requested adjournments of the hearings since June, but had not appeared in court in person.

The situation was “intolerable” even though the child had admittedly refused to take phone calls, the judge said.

The child’s level of violence was also very high, and had last appeared on video link in handcuffs.

“I won’t bring a child to court under restraint.

“He just needs to know his rights are being respected as well.”

The judge indicated that the law firm would be reported to the Victorian Legal Services Board.

A STRAY cigarette appeared to set off a spectacular bin fire outside Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 December.

With the temperature well above 30 degrees, court security were put to quick action extinguishing tall flames and a thick white wall of smoke covered the courthouse’s Pultney Street entrance.

It made some visitors wonder what the evacuation plan was - especially with the court’s only other entrance in Langhorne Street being closed due to works.

High achievers

By Victoria Stone-Meadows YEAR 12 students from high schools in the Cranbourne area have survived their last year of schooling and achieved great results following their end-of-year exams.

The anxious wait for students came to an end on 12 December when ATAR scores were officially released across the state.

Students from the 10 public and private schools in Cranbourne and surrounds celebrated achieving high scores with praise from the teachers and principals.

Newly established Cranbourne East Secondary College farewelled its inaugural Year 12 class who achieved a median study scored of 27.

“We are delighted and extremely proud of our students,” senior school assistant principal Carys Freeman said.

“This is an excellent result for our first year of Year 12.”

Cranbourne East Secondary College congratulated Anqi (Annie) Fu, Alex Howard and Sukhmandeep Kau Gill on achieving the top three ATAR scores for the college.

Principal at Hampton Park Secondary College David Finnerty said all his Year 12 students had made the school community very proud.

“We are incredibly proud of our student achievements this year,” he said.

“We were thrilled to see that 14 of our students achieved a 40 + study score in at least one unit of study and in English, we have improved the mean study score by 7.4 per cent.”

The Hampton Park Secondary College 2016 dux is Alevine Magila with an ATAR score of 99.1 while four other students at the school scored an ATAR in the 90s and a further 10 students in the 80s.

Bail refused at child porn court hearing

Other top achievers from Hillcrest were Nkiruka Onyeka with 94.75, Zoe Agnew with 93.9 and Danielle McAleese with 93.4.

St Peter’s College in Cranbourne had 161 students in Year 12 in 2016 with 137 finishing their VCE and 24 completing Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).

The top performer of the VCE students at St Peter’s is Will Veenman from the East Campus with an ATAR score of 96.05.

Will is looking forward to commencing a science course at Melbourne University and principal Tim Hogan congratulated him on his wonderful achievement and the superb role model he has been for other students.

Other high achievers included Perry Zorotheos and Max Collins from the West Campus of St Peter’s College who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and creative writing.

Minister for Education James Merlino passed on his congratulations to all Year 12 students in a message to all students.

“Completing VCE is a significant achievement, and I congratulate all of our Year 12 students - you should be very proud of what you have achieved,” he said.

“If you didn’t get the results you wanted, seek advice from your school and remember there are many pathways to success in life.”

A 25-YEAR-OLD man accused of child pornography has been refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, partly in fear he could destroy some of the online evidence.

Benjamin Michael Gledhill had been arrested by Australian Federal Police at his home, where the most extreme categories of pornography involving children, sadism and bestiality were allegedly found on 13 December.

First Constable Scott Amjah, of the AFP, told the court that among the seized material found in print and on electronic devices was an image of a naked young child who was “tied up and bound”.

“The early indications say yes, he’s definitely been sharing (the images) in some form.”

First Const Amjah quoted extracts from a conversation on the messenger app Kick, in which Gledhill allegedly chats to ‘Derek’ and says “that’s a pretty collection of videos, man”.

On other app chats with unknown people, he says his preference is for “pre-teen” sex, “teens, incest, nudism” and “boys and girls 1-10” which First Const Amjah told the court he assumed meant 1-10 years old.

Gledhill had previously served a community corrections order for similar offending in 2012, the court heard.

In arguing for bail, Gledhill told the court he’d complied with previous bail conditions including weekly visits to Pakenham police station, psychological treatment and being banned from the internet.

He said he complied with his CCO’s community work conditions

and appointments.

“I’ve never been held in custody or remanded before,” he said.

“That’s quite concerning for me.”

Police had arrested Gledhill after a referral from a US company in early November about the transmission of child pornography, the court heard.

Federal police linked the transmission to a G-mail account, which led them to Gledhill, First Const Amjah said.

Gledhill had told police that he had 40 online accounts, some of which had not yet been accessed by police, First Const Amjah said.

If the accused was released on bail, he could easily access and delete the online material and compromise the AFP investigation, the court heard.

Gledhill was charged at Dandenong police station that day but didn’t participate in a police interview.

He made no admissions during field interviews, First Const Amjah said.

Magistrate Barry Schultz described the allegations as “very serious” and “very concerning”, particularly in light of the 2012 offending.

“Despite the community order and the treatment and seeing the psychologist allegedly ... it seems to me those steps were ineffective,” Mr Schultz said.

“I accept the reason you got the disposition you did (in 2012) was that you were 21 and age was the single factor in your favour.”

Mr Schultz said he refused bail because Gledhill was an unacceptable risk of re-offending, a risk to public safety and of obstructing justice.

Gledhill was remanded to appear at a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 14 December.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A CRANBOURNE West man has been spared conviction after being found guilty of recklessly putting a man in danger of death after pushing him off a railway station platform and leaving him with a broken leg on the train tracks.

Kimiora Tangatapoto, 19, had contested the charges including recklessly causing serious injury - at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 December claiming he’d acted in self-defence.

Defence lawyer Aaron Eidelson argued that the accused had responded to the “unpredictable” heroin-affected victim at the Yarraman station platform in the early evening of 8 April.

The victim, who had been observed climbing a Myki machine and with a “bag full of syringes” that night, had allegedly started an argument and approached Tangatapoto with a syringe, Mr Eidelson claimed.

“We can’t know what this man was capable of.

“There was at least one uncapped syringe right next to him within reach - that is a lifethreatening situation.

“And a person is entitled to defend themselves with a reasonable amount of force.”

Magistrate Peter White put weight on CCTV footage of the incident that showed the victim “moving away” from Tangatapoto before being punched several times to the head and then pushed, resulting in him falling on the tracks.

The victim - who suffered a severely broken leg as a result of the fall - was hauled to safety by a witness 60 seconds before the 6.03pm express train arrived.

The alleged syringe threat was not captured by CCTV footage but Mr White found there was “a great degree of incitement or something that made you do what you did”.

The provocation didn’t justify Tangatapoto’s reaction, however, Mr White said.

Mr White said that it would also have been reasonably apparent to Tangatapoto that the station was frequented by trains “at a very fast rate” and a “very frequent interval”.

In sentencing, Mr White said he took into account Tangatapoto’s youth, no criminal priors and that he surrendered himself to police at the behest of his uncle - who had seen the incident on a TV news program.

Mr White also noted that the accused’s admitted he “f***ed up” and was somehow provoked.

He said he was “exercising a discretion I rarely do” by not recording a conviction against Tangatapoto.

Tangatapoto was sentenced to a 12-month communitycorrections order including 170 hours of unpaid work, and ordered to provide a DNA sample to police.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE former partner of a woman who was found dead in her home has been released from police custody and placed on a Drug Treatment Order after appearing via video-link at Dandenong Magistrates’ Drug Court on drugs charges.

Troy Boothey has been released from the Metropolitan Remand Centre and placed on the order for 12 months after pleading guilty to a number of drug charges on Thursday 8 December.

Magistrate Tony Parsons made it very clear to during sentencing that the Drug Treatment Order is not a “silver bullet” and Mr Boothey would have to work hard to keep

She argued that Boothey used the drugs to self-medicate his mental health issues and a court imposed Drug Treatment Order would see him return to being a

As part of the conditions of the order, Boothey will have to comply with a curfew from 9pm to 6am every day and will have to undertake drug screenings several times week.

He will also have to report to the magistrate and a court officer weekly as well as other drug treatments within the community.

Boothey also had his licence cancelled for six months for driving an unregistered vehicle with incorrect number plates.

Magistrate Parsons said this drug treatment order and hard work was a chance for Boothey to turn his life around and come back from a life of crime.

Leisure contract of the decade

By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE City of Casey council has secured YMCA Victoria to manage the municipality’s leisure and stadium facilities for the next 10 years.

The Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre, Berwick Leisure Centre and the new Casey Indoor Leisure Centre has had their contracts with YMCA renewed.

The new centre will have 10 full sized basketball and netball courts, including a show court hall with spectator seating up to 1500 people, a function area and new commercial cafe.

“The new facility will be one of the most prominent indoor sporting venues throughout Victoria and will have the versatility to host major national and international sporting events and competitions,” YMCA Casey Area Manager Matt Spencer said.

Casey ARC, Casey RACE and Doveton Pool in the Park will remain under YMCA management under a separate contract to be reviewed next year, Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the council is pleased to continue the relationship that has been built between the council and the YMCA. “Following a successful two decade partnership, council is pleased that the YMCA will continue to manage gymnastics and stadium facilities within the City of Casey for a further 10 years,” he said.

“Council is looking forward to continuing to work with YMCA to further develop sporting opportunities for both our residents and players from further afield.”

A CRANBOURNE West man has lost his hot wheels after he was caught driving dangerously more than 50km/h over the speed limit on Sunday.

Police officers saw the Holden Calais overtake another car on double lines on the Westernport Highway at Langwarrin South, about 8.45pm on 11 December.

Police clocked the car traveling at 155km/h before the car turned off the highway onto Victoria Road.

Upon searching the area, police found the car along with the driver parked behind a house on West Road.

The car was immediately impounded and the driver was breath tested - he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.073.

Along with the towing cost of $1027, the driver is expected to be charged with unlicensed driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, speeding, the separate charges of driving at a dangerous speed and in a dangerous manner, drink driving and other traffic offences.

Pursuit police recover stolen car A STOLEN car has been recovered after police followed the thieves through the Cranbourne area.

It is believed the crooks gained entry to a house on Portofino Drive, Cranbourne North, through an unlocked door late on Tuesday 6 December.

The thieves stole a set of car keys from the house and moved one car out of the driveway before stealing a Mazda CX9 from the property.

The car was dumped on Sharpe Street in Cranbourne about 12.30am on 7 December and the two thieves fled on foot after police followed the stolen vehicle.

School turns out for a sod-turning

By Victoria Stone-Meadows LOCAL MPs, students and school officials gathered for a ceremonial ‘turning of the sod’ at the newest development for Rivercrest Christian College in Clyde North.

Member for Bass Brian Paynter and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Grayley were guests at the school to see how the new developments were coming along.

The new buildings at the school include a hub incorporating spaces for visual arts, performing arts, instrumental tuition and a discovery

centre and a new administration centre for the Rivercrest Primary Campus.

The arts hub has had its concrete slab poured while the administration centre will undergo major works in the coming months.

Both new buildings have been significantly funded by the current State Government.

The school is underging further development with the addition of a new multi-purpose facility as well as a smaller community hub.

The new-look Rivercrest college is not stopping there though

with plans currently being submitted to the Casey Council to update Rivercrest’s master plan for the secondary campus.

“I expect that when MP Paynter and MP Grayley return, they will see further evidence of the transformation of this wonderful IB Christian College,” Executive Principal Geoff Grace said.

Once the full development of the school is completed by year year 2024, the school will be a fully equipped and operation early learning to Year 12 educational institution.

WHILE entering competitions from magazines and food packets might be a bit of fun for some, a Cranbourne North woman has turned competitions into a serious hobby.

Lynnette Bull says you have to be in it to win it and she has definitely been in it this year, winning more than $15,000 in cash and prizes since the start of 2016.

Ms Bull said her love of entering completions began when she found herself with a bit of time on her hands after the arrival of her first child.

“It started eight years ago when I had my first child and I was home a lot more,” she said.

“I would enter the competitions in magazines and stuff and once I won a few times I went out trying to find more competitions.”

Most recently, Ms Bull has won $200 in gift cards through the EFTPOS CHQ, SAV and WIN promotion that she says will go towards paying for her family’s Christmas lunch.

“I entered it because it came up on my Facebook feed,” she said.

“EFTPOS put up the competition that is open to Christmas and as soon as it opened, I kept all my receipts to enter.”

Ms Bull says there is a strategy to winning competitions but says the best thing you can do is to enter the ones you like the look of - and just go for it.

“The EFTPOS competition started on 24 November and I won on the two first consecutive days because not many people enter right at the start.”

“It definitely pays off to enter.”

Race-based slurs a low act

By Victoria Stone-Meadows CITY of Casey Councillors Steve Beardon and Rex Flannery attended a community forum to oppose suggested changes to the Federal Racial Discrimination Act on Thursday 8 December.

Local Labor MPs Mark Dreyfus, Clare O’Neil and Julian Hill hosted the forum about Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act at The Castle in Dandenong.

The forum was in response to a Federal inquiry into removing the words ‘offend’ and ‘insult’ from the law in the interests of free speech.

Cr Beardon represents the Mayfield Ward in Casey and said he supports leaving the Act the way it is because changing it would open the door for discrimination of people in the Cranbourne community.

“There is a lot of concern from people that have chosen to live in Australia who have not been made welcome as they can,” Cr Beardon said.

“The impact of racial slurs and comments cuts deep and can affect people emotionally for months or years as they go along.”

Cr Beardon said changing 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act could

send a messge to people in the community that insulting and offending people based on their race was OK. “It sends the wrong message to some people that they can act in a way that is not appropriate,” he said.

“A small percentage of people will see it as a green light that they can target minority groups and speak ill of people they may or may not understand.”

Cr Beardon has also submitted a written plea to the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights to urge the Federal Government to leave the Act the way it is.

“They need to leave the Act the way it is and keep moving forward in this country, not backward,” he said.

“We live in a fantastic place that is very welcoming and we need to be promoting a direction of inclusiveness and not undo legislation that makes people feel welcome to live here.”

On Wednesday 7 December, the State Government welcomed a joint submission from more than 60 community groups from across the state calling for racial discrimination laws to be protected.

Coles launches jobs bonanza

By Victoria Stone-Meadows SUPERMERKET juggernaut Coles has officially launched a new-look store at Eden Rise Shopping Centre in Berwick South.

The revamped store and introduction of online shopping service will create 60 new jobs at the store over the next six months.

The new store will have an in-store bakery as well as an open meat counter, continental deli with olive bar and collection of local and imported cheeses.

In addition, the store is also installing two new express registers to complement the existing assisted checkouts.

The introduction of “Click and Collect” online shopping in mid-2017 will see residents of the area able to do their grocery shopping from the comfort of their homes.

Eden Rise Coles manager Chris Anderson said the changes to the store would be a great thing for customers.

“We’re committed to our local community and the changes to our store reflect this,” he said.

“The team is excited to share a wide range of store upgrades to new and existing customers.

“We’re also delighted to be launching ‘Click and Collect’ in the next few months, which will offer out locals more convenience and an option to save time on their shopping.”

Go looking for change or it will come looking for you

By Casey Neill SEBN is urging Greater Dandenong’s business community to “be the change” next year.

Manager Sandra George announced the 2017 theme for the network at the SEBN Christmas industry breakfast at Bunurong Memorial Park in Dandenong South on Thursday 8 December.

She said businesses needed to be on the front foot instead of reacting to change or waiting for it.

Robert Bosch Australia president and chairman Gavin Smith also spoke about the need for businesses to be proactive.

He joined Bosch in 1990, was appointed president in 2011 and was recently added to the Prime Minister’s taskforce on Industry 4.0 and made chair of the Internet of Things Alliance.

Mr Smith told the breakfast that business disruption had never been more of a challenge than it was now.

He said that through the Internet of Things - everyday objects having network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data - more than 50 billion things would be connected to the internet by 2022.

“That creates a world of opportunities but it also creates a world of pain if you don’t understand it,” Mr Smith said.

He said businesses needed to connect their factories to the internet to be competitive, and said they would be excluded if they didn’t.

“People are in control of this fourth industrial review,” he said.

“You are not alone. We are all in the same situation.

“We can’t just sit and wait and hope it will get better.

“It won’t.”

Mr Smith has helped automotive supplier Bosch to overcome disruptive changes to the sector.

“Our manufacturing footprint will never be what it was,” he said.

“But that’s a good thing.”

He said Bosch was now focused on manufacturing items that couldn’t be made elsewhere.

“Our business has changed. It had to change,” he said.

“If you put smart people to work and employ new technologies you can do the impossible.”

Bergent Marketing Intelligence managing partner and director and the Human Truth’s founder John Berenyi said figuring out what people really wanted was the key to good marketing and customer service.

“If you don’t understand what people really want you can’t give it to them, and if you can’t give it to them, someone else will,” he said.

what they wanted because they didn’t want to, they didn’t know how to, or they didn’t know what they wanted.

He said it wasn’t about what something was made from or cost.

“It’s what it delivers from an emotional perspective,” he said.

“McDonald’s is all about socialising, it’s not about hamburgers.”

In his annual update, Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie said this year’s introduction of rate-capping had left the council with less revenue to do what it needed to do.

“It causes us to be more innovative and look at new and different ways of doing things,” he said.

He said VicRoads had indicated that the Dandenong Bypass segment to be built between South Gippsland High-

Aidan’s off to nationals

By Nick Creely FROM humble beginnings at Pakenham, rising baseball star Aidan Willis has certainly come a long way.

So much so, that the 16-yearold will now represent Victoria Blue in the Under 18 national championships in Blacktown from 6-15 January 2017.

Willis, a product of the Berwick Baseball Club, was ecstatic at the chance to pull on the blue for his state.

“I found out about two weeks ago now - we’ve started training down in Altona already - I was stoked and it was just a good feeling to be chosen,” he said.

“I can’t wait to play with the boys, and see how far we can get - the side is strong, we have a few top-age guys.”

His journey started at a young age, and inspired by his dad, he took up the game that he now believes can take him far.

“I started baseball with Dad when I was about nine years old, mostly because I wanted to do something over the winter and I played cricket over the summer,” he said.

“I train about two days a week - but from there on, the other days I’m just looking to work hard and get better.

“Batting and fielding are my two biggest strengths, and I’m a quick runner - I love watching Mike Trout, he is one of my favourites, because he plays the game hard and runs hard, and Bryce Harper as well; he just dominates and has a presence at the plate.

“I’d like to eventually make my way to college, and see how that goes, and I’ll do everything I can to make that happen.”

With the game ever-growing in the south-east, Willis believes it can only get stronger as more and more kids elect to try the game.

“The game is strong in this

region and its growing - there’s a few charter baseball clubs like the Mariners, I played with them last year, and we won in Geelong, and then went to Lismore for the nationals, and then on top of that, played in the Asia Pacific in the Philippines and then came second in the World Series,” Willis explained.

But a decision had to be made, and at the age of 14-years, he elected to leave cricket and pursue his dream of making it is a baseballer.

“When I was about 14, I stopped playing cricket and chose baseball instead - cricket has given me a foundation in baseball I guess - I was noticeably better at baseball and chose that,” he said.

“Anytime you do something wrong you have a chance to redeem yourself for the team, when I used to play cricket and you get out that’s it, so the game just has that excitement factor to it.”

Coach is happy with team’s improvement

By Nick Creely CASEY-SOUTH Melbourne coach Brian Keogh is adamant that the club is heading in the right direction, and is buoyed by the last fortnight his group has produced.

After starting the season like a house on fire, the Swans faded off in the month of November, before producing a stunning three-game patch that sees them head into the break full of confidence and within touching distance of the top eight.

In Saturday’s thrilling victory over Monash Tigers, Casey’s improvement was evident to see, and chased down a total of 330 that previously they may not have been able to achieve.

But it wasn’t just the runs that were important, it was the manner that they chased the total down, something Keogh is proud of.

And despite external belief that the club is heading for another lowly season, Keogh believes his Swans have the capacity to shock the competition after Christmas, but concedes he didn’t expect improvement to happen so rapidly.

“There is a great spirit and comradery amongst the group - I said to the players and supporters yesterday, we are probably playing a season ahead in terms of where we thought we’d be,” he explained.

“We lost four of our best six players last year, and then Kasun at the beginning of the season, so that’s 1200 runs from the top of the order.

“They’re a young group who have belief, and more importantly there just a tight knit group - they’re genuine good mates.

“That’s what honestly makes a great club, everyone accepting and respecting one another.

“Our seconds are doing well, and

our thirds and fourths are incredibly young and will come together - there’s been no real surprises but I guess the resolve of the group has been incredible, it’s been a rollercoaster - in October we played some great cricket, and then fell away a little bit in November, but we have responded.

“We had a really long conversation after the Frankston game, we were really disappointed, and now we’ve knocked off three great sides in the space of ten days - it’s really pleasing.

“I’m really excited about this current group, but more importantly, there’s a wave of young players who are going to come through - Joel Mitchell, Ashley Chandrasinghe, Cam Brown obviously, Harry Wans, Sam Jones, these types of guys are really talented and around the age of 16-17.”

And Keogh said that the off-season was critical, and that shaping the list for not just this season, but for seasons to come was vitally important.

“We did a great job in our list management at the start of the season, and made a real focus on filling some certain gaps in our list - we wanted to create competitive tension with the group but also remain loyal to our current list,” he said.

“We decided against going out and targeting big name recruits, what we actually did is recruit guys who are probably a little more mature, like Cameron Dinger, who give us depth at the club, and fill gaps.

“We are building sustained success, because we have got out list right, and have a next wave of exciting talent - we want to be a long term top six side.”

Despite the list improving as a collective, Keogh pointed out a few players who he believes are integral components to the make-up of a successful side.

“Lamby’s (Nathan Lambden) been an enormous recruit for us in the last two years - and he loves the moment with either bat or ball - and I think Dylan is the same as that, which is re-

ally good for us.

“But also Lachie Sperling has been outstanding as a leader this year as well, and we believe an 800 run season is coming for him.

“It’s his tactical nous and ability to lead off the field as well - sure he’d be frustrated with his season to date, but I can’t question his impact and leadership on the group.”

At the half-way point of the season, elegant opener Devin Pollock leads the run tally, scoring 324 runs at 29.45, while Lachlan Sperling has 277 runs

and Dylan Hadfield 271.

With the ball, Nathan Lambden has taken 16 wickets at 24.38, while Brendan Rose has 13 wickets and Leigh Diston 11.

The Swans have used 16 players in their first XI to date, and have exposed such talent as Cameron Brown, Jackson Fry, Cameron Dinger, Luke Manders and Jordan Wyatt to the pinnacle of cricket in Victoria.

The Swans will return after the break to tackle Melbourne Uni on 7 January away from home.

By Nick Creely CRANBOURNE has suffered a shock home loss to the hands of Mordialloc, as the final round of Twenty20s were played in the glorious sunshine on Tuesday evening.

Despite being the competition’s favorites, the Eagles lacked their natural flair, after Bloodhounds batsman Hari Krishan (47) lifted them to 8/129 off their 20 overs in front of a strong home crowd.

Once again Steven Spoljaric (3/19) starred with the ball, while Jakeb McVicar (2/15) was handy during the middle overs of the innings.

In response, the Eagles could only muster up 8/99, with key linchpins Matt Chasemore (8) and Steven Spoljaric (17) unable to cash in.

Ian Daniel (2/14) was stellar once again, while Shaun Jamieson (3/17) enjoyed his

chance in the side.

In other important matches, Springvale South (6/175) has comfortably knocked over Lynbrook (102) at Alex Nelson Reserve, another dominant Michael Davies (45 and 2/10) performance has seen HSD thrash Dandy West (9/94), marquee Brendan Rose (3/24) starred in Berwick’s (7/152) win over Springvale (130), while Buckley Ridges (6/171) dismantled a disappointing Dingley (78) at Park Oval, with Susantha Pradeep (43 and 2/12) on fire.

And another capitulation arose, as the Magpies struggled from the outset, rolled for just 64.

DDCA TURF 1 & 2 REVIEW - ROUND 6 (DAY 1) WICKETS for entree, wickets for main, wickets for dessert - that was all that was on the menu in the highly intriguing clash between Berwick and Dandenong West at Greaves Reserve.

Perhaps it was inevitable that batting would be tough, but the expectation for Berwick is that with their star studded batting side, they can put away any side, anywhere.

But that was certainly not the case, as Peter Atkinson wound back the clock, taking 5/31 and continuing his stunning season in Turf 1.

The writing was on the wall early, as Darren de Souza (0) fell in the first over to Atkinson, and from there, the Bears capitulated, losing six wickets in the space of ten overs to be sitting at a shocking 7/16.

The winless Bulls had their tails up, as Atkinson, and fellow seamer Fred Collins (4/37) tore them apart.

But skipper Jarrod Goodes was once again a shining light, rescuing his side from oblivion with a counterattacking 33, including two sixes, to lift the Bears to 87.

And it seemed the Bulls were flying, notching up 28 for the first wicket, as the possibility of the season’s biggest upset started to grow legs.

But from there, the same issues plagued the Bulls, as Peter Atkinson (8) finally fell, and with the pitch doing plenty, suddenly found themselves in serious trouble, sitting at 5/42 before Jarrod Armitage steamrolled the tail, bowling the Westers out for just 58.

The Bloodhounds then wasted little time with the bat, spanking 2/178 off just 28 overs, as Ian Daniel (102) made a sparkling and brutal unbeaten century.

At stumps, the Magpies are once again in dire straits, hanging by a thread at 4/29.

Despite sitting outside the top four before Christmas, Heinz-Southern Districts are certainly a side to watch, and put Parkfield to the sword as a consequence.

Once again the bowling side elected to send the opposition in, and despite some unsavoury batting conditions, the Cobras dug in, as openers Brad Downe (20) and Robert Davies (23) got them off to a solid 50-run start.

Skipper Matthew Cox (55) found some vital touch with the bat before Christmas, but it was Michael Davies (73) who asserted his dominance with some wonderful stroke-play.

The Cobras ended the day’s play bowled out for 276, with Bears seamer Matthew Aslett (4/55) once again the pick of the bowlers.

Unfortunately for North Dandenong, Springvale South, Hallam and Cranbourne, play was unable to go ahead, with the pitch deemed too wet for the umpires.

TURF 2 Beaconsfield has bounced back from last week’s disappointment, scoring 7/305 declared, and having Silverton on the ropes.

Sent into bat, the Tigers were dominant, as Matt Golding (83), Angus Bunnell (53) and Jamie Hall (50) put them to the sword in the middle-order.

The Tigers then elected to have a crack at the home side before stumps, and took five wickets, leaving them 5/30 off 15 overs.

Swans grind out the win

By Nick Creely PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 12 (SATURDAY/SUNDAY) VERY few people would have given Casey any real chance at a win on Saturday evening - but that’s how the Swans like it.

Facing a mighty deficit of 330, and resuming play at 1/3, very few cricket lovers would have expected the next six hours to be so intense.

The previous day, Monash Tigers made life tough for the Swans, and despite Nathan Lambden snaring an early scalp, the Tigers were simply brutal with the bat, as Daniel Sartori (75) and Sean Terry (64) put the Swans to the sword.

Nathan Lambden (2/68) was the pick of the bowlers, while Brendan Rose (2/50) and Lachlan Sperling (2/27) were among the wickets.

With Tigers legend Alan Wise steaming in to Devin Pollock and Michael Wallace at the beginning of day two, it was integral that the Swans pair got through the first hour.

And they did. From there on in, belief was evident, and with it, the Swans chased down the total on the very last over of the day.

It was always going to be a grind, but the old adage of “batting out your overs” was the simple saying that got them through.

The Swans did look shaky at one point, languishing at 3/95, as skipper Lachlan Sperling (27) fell victim to Alan Wise.

Soon after Ryan Eaton fell for 17, the nuggetty Jordan Wyatt entered the crease.

After just eight runs in his first five innings this season, the pressure was on, as Alan Wise continued to steam in.

But combined with Devin Pollock (69), who batted for over two sessions in a gritty knock, the pair added over 100 runs, as Wyatt kept

Eventually he fell, but not before making a wonderfully compiled 92, guiding the Swans to 260, still 70 runs shy of victory.

Dylan “The Finisher” Hadfield then strode to the crease, knocking the ball around for 44, before Brendan Rose showed his wares with the bat to make a vital 30.

With the game going down to the wire, the equation was simple, two runs from six balls, with one wicket in hand.

Nathan Lambden and Jackson Fry chatted mid-pitch, discussing how to win the game.

And then the first ball of the last over was delivered, and Jackson Fry, facing just his second ball of the season, got the ball into the gap, capping off a season-defining victory.

The celebration of Fry was epic, and the Swans, who realised the magnitude of the victory, corralled the number 11 in solidarity, something that has allowed them to temporarily occupy seventh spot.

Swans coach Brian Keogh was full of praise for his group, particularly highlighting the innings of

both Dev Pollock and Jordan Wyatt as potentially defining.

“Jordan was just terrific - he peeled off a big hundred in the twos a month ago, and then he came into the ones and didn’t get great opportunity," he said.

“We talked to him this week about being patient when he gets his opportunity, and once he gets going he scores at a run a ball and he just plays some glorious shots.

“Dev batted for two sessions - we talked about the little moments, ball by ball, over by over, and we knew we had to bat for a long time - we knew it would be a war of attrition, he was terrific and disciplined and it’s a testament to his work ethic.”

“The win’s given us an enormous amount of belief - we batted for 100 overs, something we hadn’t done to that point, and we made 330 against a quality opposition.

“We go into Christmas with 25 points, last year we only won five games, and we have already won five so far.

“We’re now sitting in seventh position, obviously with a round to play out next week, but we now go into the second-half of the year with a hell of a lot riding on it.”

HAMPTON PARK BOWLS THE second half of the Midweek Pennant season started last week, and Hampton Park’s two teams have different priorities.

Division 1 are in eighth place with three wins. To play any finals they will need to change their narrow losses to narrow wins.

On Tuesday they played Cranbourne at Pound Road, for yet another narrow four shot loss. Marion Battaglia, Denise Eastick, Ron Beverley and Andrew Brandolin were the only winners, 25-17, while Val Moore, Christine Hendrie, Helen Lambert and Shane Collins, 17-22, and Toni Sutton, Brian Diaper, Geoff Ladner and Neville Hendrie, 16-23, both went down in close games.

Hampton Park (1) 2-58 lost to Cranbourne(2) 14-62.

Midweek Division 3 is in a better position. They have seven wins, well in front of the fourth placed team. This week they travelled to Caulfield where all rinks were successful. Lou Soligo, Ann Westwell, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood led all day for a 2819 win, supported by Jim Westwell, Gwen Clough, Peter Hayden and Heather Naismith, 26-18. Rhonda Diaper, Jen Sherry, Stuart Tokely and Geoff Ampt prevailed in a closer game 22-18.

Hampton Park (2) 16-76 defeated Caulfield Park Alma 0-55.

Saturday Pennant completed the first half of the draw and Hampton Park’s season is in their own hands. Division 1, with two wins need to continue their improvement, Division 4 has four wins and will need to keep on winning, while Division 6, have six wins and one loss, and are in the four in their section.

Despite all this, Saturday was a disaster for the club with no overall wins.

On the lightning carpet at Ferntree Gully, Division 1 again suffered a loss.

Closest was John Wright, Christine Hendrie, Clint Mills and Shane Collins (16-19) while Trevor Harbright, Mark Paton, Andrew Brandolin and Warwick Hardy (1526) Geoff Ladner, Craig Richards, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm (17-29) and Geoff Ampt, John Wright, Neville Hendrie and Steve Barnes (10-30) all lost.

Hampton Park (1) 0-58 lost to Ferntree Gully (1) 18-104.

At home Division 4 played Keysborough. The club’s only winning rink for the day was Denise Eastick, Gavin Wilson, Helen Lambert and Heather Naismith, 25-11. Val Moore, Tracey Storm, Marion Battaglia and Sean McDonald (12-31), Jim Westwell, Aaron Ottaway, Vince Kovacic and Ron Beverley (12-31, and Jen Sherry, Rob Woff, Stan Hatch and Ken Cobden (12-21) all went down.

Hampton Park (2) 2-62 lost to Keysborough (2) 16-94.

Division 6 had their biggest loss for the year at Dandenong Club. Dave Isted, Richard Pallett, Toni Sutton and Bill Webb lost 15-22, Aaron Douglas, Wayne Grimsey, Brian Diaper and Ray Wood lost 19-26 and Gary Perrin, Bill Holden, Dave Clarke and Ian Kitt lost 13-28. Rhonda Diaper, Lou Soligo, Gwen Clough and Stuart Tokely had a day to forget losing 7-39.

Hampton Park (3) 0-54 lost to Dandenong Club (3) 18-115.

Good wins to midweek teams

Bragging rights for Cranbourne CRANBOURNE BOWLS THE tide is turning for the Cranbourne number one side after a drought-breaking victory over Edithvale at home.

Elgar and Thomas did it again with a 17 shot win on their rink to give Cranbourne victory by 12 shots overall.

After the game Skip Barry Thomas was all praise for his rink.

“Ray Boskell got us off to a great start but Hans Worsteling was not beaten all day which made my task a lot easier aided by some great shots from Peter Elgar during the game. It was a great victory for Cranbourne and a much needed win to put us back on the winning side again.”

Meanwhile the second team lost to Oakleigh by a narrow margin of four shots. Skip Gerry Dudink and his team of Vic Butera, Shane Morrison and Harry Van Soest won by 22 shots including an eight on one of the ends.

The third team lost to Mulgrave by 14 shots.

In Midweek bowls, the Cranbourne ladies had another good win this time by 11 shots against Berwick and the open side had another tight victory against Hampton Park by four shots.

Doig leads Bulls’ charge WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 7 (DAY 2)

By Nick Creely AN epic performance from the legendary Dwayne Doig has seen Cardinia win outright over Pakenham/Upper Toomuc.

After the Bulls amassed 6/269 last week, Doig spun a web through the Yabbies, taking 8/47 in their capitulation of 89 off 39.4 overs.

The veteran spinner is no stranger to these kinds of performances too, having done it in for several other clubs in Victoria.

Apart from Ryan De Reus (26) at the top of the order, there was very little fight from the Yabbies batsman.

But Doig’s brilliance didn’t stop there, as he again steamrolled the Yabbies, taking 4/35 in the second innings - 12 in total for the match.

Skipper Neil Barfuss (2/14), Kim Bentick (2/9) and David Kingston (2/10) were all solid with the ball.

Mark Cooper has guided Kooweerup home, in a tense run-chase against Upper Beaconsfield.

Chasing 180, the Demons were shaky early, sitting at 4/67, before Cooper (67), Jess Mathers (27) and Matt Davey (38 not out) all combined to guide them home.

Carroll has finally broken through for a memorable ton for Devon Meadows.

Not even in backyard cricket had he made one, but walking to the crease already 82 not out, and Devon Meadows already 104 runs in front of Tooradin, Carroll knew that this was his chance.

Although he was dismissed not long after for 101, these kinds of moments have made the Panthers such a dominant District side this season.

In this particular game, the Panthers followed on with their dominance, declaring on 309, before attempting an outright victory, but were denied by the Gulls, who batted out the game to finish 8/124. Matthew Hutchinson was once again superb, picking up 3/37.

Cam Williams (4/31) and Kyle O’Reilly (3/35) were excellent with the ball for the Brookers, and took the game away from the Cats in the first hour.

And an epic 90 not-out by Luke Merrett has saved Cardinia from defeat in a thriller against Lang Lang.

Chasing 256 runs for victory, the Bulls were in trouble at 4/95 and then 6/129, before Merrett combined with Josh Brown (30) to guide them home.

Joseph Dalgleish (3/34) and Ricky Caddell (2/50) toiled hard, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to prevent the Swamp Tigers from enduring their most disappointing loss of the season to date.

This Fiat’s on steroids

By Alistair Kennedy ONLY the Italians could get away with a TV commercial that links a performance-enhancing ‘little blue pill’ with the transformer-like conversion of a small hatchback into a muscular SUV. That’s what Fiat has done in a brilliant ad that sees the pill eventually dropping into the fuel tank of a Fiat 500 hatchback and bulk it up into the 500X compact SUV with the closing line - “bigger, more powerful and ready for action”.

The 500X was designed alongside the Jeep Renegade following the Italian company’s takeover of the American icon during the GFC which no doubt explains why the TV ad made its debut in the primest of primetime spots, the 2015 NFL Super Bowl match.

I’ve always loved the clean, unfussy looks of the new Fiat 500 and they work even better in the 500X. It’s noticeably larger and heavier than the standard 500 on which it’s based.

At 4248mm it’s almost 20 per cent longer and, in the optional AWD version, is around 50 per cent heavier.

It also comes with rear doors unlike the traditional two-door format of the iconic Cinquecento, and it has a reasonable 350-litre boot.

Despite the size difference there’s a clear family resemblance between the two cars both from the front and in various details around the body, as well as the popular pseudo metallic look inside.

Younger buyers will be attracted by the various personalisation options including 12 exterior colours with nine different door mirror covers; 15 dressup decals; five door-sill inserts and five alloy wheel designs. Inside there are fabric and leather options. There are even five different designs for the key fob!

Fiat 500X comes in four model variants, two with front-wheel drive and two with AWD. Prices range from $26,000 for the entry level FWD drive Pop with a manual gearbox, through to $38,000 for the AWD automatic Cross Plus.

The Pop has the option of six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic, Pop Star only gets the latter transmission.

The two AWD models use a ninespeed automatic. All autos come with paddle shifters.

All 500X models come with seven airbags; ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; Isofix child seat anchoring; electronic stability control with hill start assist and electronic roll mitigation; tyre pressure monitoring system; and rear

Pop Star adds all-speed traction control; blind spot monitoring; rear cross-path detection; and reversing camera.

Lounge and Cross Plus both also get emergency automatic braking and lane departure warning.

Alloy wheels step up a size through the grades from 16-inch in the Pop, to 17-inch in the Pop Start and 18-inch in the two AWD models.

Likewise the higher spec models (Pop Star upwards) have a 6.5-inch touchscreen for the Fiat Uconnect system and satellite navigation.

Pop doesn’t have SatNav and uses a

five-inch screen. Bluetooth, including voice commands, is standard across the range together with USB and Auxiliary sockets.

Lounge and Cross Plus get a higher quality BeatsAudio sound system with eight speakers.

Our test car was the AWD Fiat 500X Lounge. Entry and exit is surprisingly easy with large, comfortable and supportive front seats. External vision is excellent.

It’s sharp and easy to manoeuvre around the urban jungle especially with the choice of three driving modes (Auto, Sport, and Traction plus) accessed via what Fiat calls a Mood Selector.

It cruised relatively smoothly on the motorway with only an occasional use of the paddle shifters on long hilly stretches.

Ride comfort was very good with noise and vibration making it one of the quietest cars in the compact SUV class.

Handling isn’t exactly Italian sporty, but the 500X is neutral in the way it feels until you’re well above the cornering speeds likely to be attempted by the average owner.

Fuel consumption from the 500X Lounge is listed at 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged just over eight L/100km.

So is that very cheeky TV ad right is the Fiat 500X indeed “bigger, more powerful and ready for action”? It’s certainly bigger than the standard 500 with space enough for a family of up to two-plus-three, and with almost twice the kilowatts and Newton Metres there’s a fair bit more grunt.

By “ready for action” we must assume that they’re talking about offroad ability.

We certainly wouldn’t recommend ventured too far off the bitumen but with the added safeguard of AWD we found the Lounge handled some mild gravel without any problems.
