“Penalties can carry a prison term

and large fine, but regardless you will be going to speak to a magistrate if you are caught and you will be charged.”

THE fire danger period kicked in this week and with fire season now in full swing Wodonga CFA are urging Border and surrounding district residents to “seriously prepare your house”.

The Wodonga CFA is encouraging those who are living on the outskirts of town and backing onto grassland to begin preparing for the “high chance” of bushfires this season.

Tuesday proposed a high risk fire danger with 37-degree heat and winds of up to 45 kilometres per hour.

Wodonga CFA operations manager Paul King said the next few months would see a “difficult” fire season and that clearing grass around properties and staying alert about bushfires in the area was important.

“It will be a difficult season, especially that grassland early in the season because there’s just so much of it and gradually the forest will dry out as well,” Mr King said.

“Anyone that lives up against or nearby open grassland is in danger.

“Grassfires are very hot, they are intense, fast and change direction quickly so people on roadways or in the open grass areas are in a life-threatening situation.

“Those that live nearby, if they stay aware of any grassfires approaching then they probably only need to go a couple streets back from the grassfire risk.”

Forest Fire Management regions operations manager Shaun Lawler said while it’s been a cooler start to the season each summer season will bring “multiple fires” and that people must remain aware of their surroundings.

“Every fire season we get multiple fires across the landscape from private property through to forest areas and particularly this year, there’s a lot of grass around private property and in the forest,” Mr Lawler said.

Future set in

By Monique Kuzeff WODONGA is set to see its central precinct enhanced later next year with the new shopping hub Mann Central on the corner of High Street and Elgin Boulevard expected to be finished by October 2017.

A vision that has been 10 years in the making has come to flourish this year with four major stores - Coles, Liquorland, Kmart and Kmart Auto currently underway.

The Coles pre-cast is almost finished with Kmart’s pre-cast expected to rise in mid-January. Both anchor stores are anticipated to be completed in early April.

The precinct will also feature a double-storey undercover carpark on the corner of South and Hovell Streets, which will include approximately 850 car spaces.

The development will encompass a further 11 speciality stores ranging from 35 square metres to 271 square metres that are offered for lease through realtor Stanley and Martin and will comprise casual dining, retail stores, and fresh food options.

Mann Wodonga Properties director David Maxwell is pleased with the progress of the site at its current stage, saying: “It’s nice to be at this particular point in the year.”

“If someone would’ve asked me this time last year whether I’d be here, I would’ve said no,” Mr Maxwell said.

“It’s very encouraging to think that in October 2017 there will be a new shopping centre in the middle of Wodonga.”

With Wodonga being one of the fastest growing regional cities in the Victoria, Mr Maxwell said that to build another shopping precinct in its centre came as a huge opportunity.

“From a demographic and an economic point of view the demand was here and the next important part for us was the site - making sure the site was actually fitting in to the existing High Street precinct so that it wouldn’t draw people away.

“It was an opportunity to marry in and then also benefit not just us but the other retail owners and tenants

around the area.

“The two majors sitting up this end ties nicely into the existing High Street.”

About 70 local tradespeople are currently working the site, with a peak of around 160 tradespeople expected to be involved by May next year, Joss project manager Andrew Cameron said.

Mr Cameron said while the weather hasn’t posed as much of a delayer thus far, the site could face heat and wind

disruptions moving into next year.

“We’ve had a good couple of months with the weather, but what we are going to be faced with next is putting the roof on in February which can get hot and windy,” Mr Cameron said.

“We are currently on track and due to finish in October.

“If we can get a roof on most of our buildings by April or May it will enable us to finish our work internally without elements of weather affecting it.”

MORE than 2000 LED streetlights will move Wodonga towards a cleaner and greener streetlight network, after Wodonga Council decided to purchase the LEDs at its council meeting on Monday night.

The council allocated $1.2 million in the 2016-’17 budget for the LED replacement program, following a resolution at its March meeting to proceed with the project.

The installation is due to proceed in April next year.

The lights and hardware, worth $600,000 will contribute to savings of 773 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year - equivalent to removing 570 cars from the road each year for 20 years - and cost savings of about $3 million over the life of the assets. It is projected the program will have paid for itself within six years.

Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said the council was leading the way in reducing greenhouse emissions and energy efficiency measures which reduced operating expenses.

“This project is the single largest project the council can participate in to reduce electricity costs and is line with what our community told us it wanted in a cleaner and greener city,” Cr Speedie said.

“The new lights perform better, last longer and are more than twice as efficient as the existing mercury vapour lights.

“And not only do the lights offer energy savings and reduce greenhouse emissions, the project will improve compliance with Australian Standards in safety and light levels offering greater uniformity of light across and along our streets while reducing glare and light pollution.”

The project will be completed as one continuous installation and is expected to be completed by the end of the financial year.

Getting cancer fight right

By Monique Kuzeff WHEN it comes to cancer, it’s all about “the right treatment in the right place at the right time”, says Health Minister Sussan Ley who would like to see cancer research, trials and care improved in regional Australia.

Last week, a National Regional Cancer Services Forum was held in Albury which saw representatives from regional cancer services and jurisdictions including Cancer Australia CEO Dr Helen Zorbas and Ms Ley to discuss better cancer treatment and care outcomes for regional Australians.

The aim of the forum was to better define the pathway for treatment and care for regional cancer patients. The event was also attended by oncologists, General Practitioners, state and territory health departments, key national stakeholders and people affected by cancer.

Ms Ley said that while the Albury region had stepped up its cancer care through its new regional-based cancer treatment facility, cancer outcomes in regional areas were still yet to match those in metropolitan areas.

“Too often the system is fragmented, the referrals don’t work as well as they should, and people don’t often get the treatment they need,” Ms Ley said.

“We want to have the same standards in regional Australia as we do in the cities.

“We’ve got fantastic oncologists, hospitals, cancer nurses and a really supportive community - we are very lucky - but we still aren’t getting the outcomes like in the cities and that’s because regional patients don’t often get the help they need in the right place at the right time.”

She said the five year survival rate was 67 per cent in the major cities and 63 per cent in remote, rural and regional areas and that such a gap needed to be closed.

“We need to do more to address some lower survival outcomes for some population groups,” she said.

“People with poor socio-economic status, people from diverse cultural backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and of course people in rural, regional and remote Australia.”

Dr Zorbas said in her discussions around cancer care across Australia it had become clear to her that there were some “common challenges” in providing care for people outside the major metropolitan areas.

Christmas hampers packed with care

By Monique Kuzeff HUNDREDS of food packs will be distributed to those doing it tough in Albury this Christmas including refugees, homeless people and children in isolation, thanks to St Matthew’s Crisis Care.

Some 20 Albury High School Year 11 students joined volunteers at St Matthew’s Anglican Church on Thursday morning to help pack over 400 crisis care packs.

Each crisis care pack contains a variety of canned, packaged and jar goods such as pasta sauce, noodles, tea bags and canned salmon, which have been donated and purchased from local supermarkets.

St Matthew’s emergency food program co-ordinator Barbara Hoodless said various community agencies could approach St Matthew’s and request a number of parcels to distribute through their service.

“They all go back in to the Albury community and it’s so wonderful to be able to do such a great thing for your community,” Ms Hoodless said.

“It is all about caring for people who are in need and not able to have Christmas as lots of

different tumor types.

“Also making sure that across all adult cancers, whether they’re common or rare, for children and young adults with cancer, we have network services and appropriate linages and the right care is delivered in the right place for those patients.”

St Matthew’s Father Peter MacLeod-Miller said with national economic indicators revealing a slumping economy that is affecting regional communities, it’s through actions

like this that the community was supporting each other.

“Christmas is a time to notice other people and especially the people who aren’t yelling,” Father Peter said.

“There are many people on the Border who are doing it tough and on a national scale we are going backwards economically I think.

“Locally it’s experienced in a pretty quiet way so we are trying to do something real for people who may need support this Christmas.”

$10.3 million injection from the Federal Government in Cancer Australia’s Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme (PdCCRS), which aims to foster collaboration in cancer research to improve cancer outcomes.

This recent investment has pushed the amount invested in the scheme to over $110 million.

THE construction of the Baranduda Fields project has been put on hold after Wodonga Council voted at its Monday night meeting to defer progress until funds were made available.

Alternatively, council will use surplus funds of up to $1.9 million to address issues currently faced by existing facilities.

This will include upgrades at Gateway Lakes ($63,000), Wodonga Sports Leisure Centre ($35,000), Birallee Park Hockey Field ($345,000), Willow Park ($300,000), St Monica’s Oval ($300,000), Belvoir Park Oval ($50,000), Gayview Park ($27,000) and Kelly Park netball court ($430,000).

Councillor Libby Hall said council was not in a position to support progress of the sporting facility without $10 million in funding from the National Stronger Regions Fund (NSRF), which council was unsuccessful in obtaining last month.

“Wodonga Council is not in a financial position to go ahead with the development,” Cr Hall said.

“It would put a huge strain

on our budget and rates going forward and would not have allowed us to prioritise needed repairs and improvements to our other much utilised recreational facilities already in our city.”

Cr Hall said that even if council had received the funding from the NSRF, council would still be in a financially difficult position to fund the Baranduda Fields project at this stage.

“Borrowing for this development even if we were to have received funding from the Federal Government would’ve raised our debt level to just below the maximum threshold to the sustainable indebtedness ratio as specified by the Victorian Auditor-General and meant rate rises of 4.25 per cent for the next 10 years,” she said.

“Not going ahead with Baranduda Fields is the right decision for our community at this time.”

Cr Kat Bennett supported the vote for safety and funding reasons, saying there was an “urgent” need for council to invest in the existing recreational facilities for reasons being they are “over utilised” and “deteriorating”.

“Some of them are operating at double the capacity at the moment and I think it’s a good idea to have Baranduda Fields deferred to a time in the future where we can access alternative funds to support the project,” Cr Bennett said.

In support of the motion, mayor Anna Speedie highlighted the benefits and importance of what the existing recreational facilities offered the community.

“Our sport and recreational facilities offer our community so much - physical activity, community and social connectedness, improved mental health outcomes, long-term reduction in medical costs and improved physical and mental health conditions,” Cr Speedie said.

“For me this is not simply spending, but it is actually an investment in our community.”

She said that while Baranduda Fields would ease the demand for the existing sporting fields, particularly during peak periods, the investment in to current facilities would provide increased capacity in a “timely” and “much-needed” manner.

Fund-raising, it’s a wrap

By Monique Kuzeff MORE than $10,000 was raised last year through Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue’s (AWAR) gift-wrapping fundraiser and this year AWDR secretary Danielle Maclean has no doubt that the animal rescue will hit that target again.

Located at both West End Plaza and Lavington Square are the annual pop-up giftwrapping booths run by AWAR volunteers in the effort to raise funds to assist animals in need on the Border.

If you don’t feel like wrapping gifts yourself this year but don’t want to pay top dollar, the team at AWAR is happy to take the task off your hands - and all they ask is a gold coin donation.

One hundred per cent of the money raised through this AWDR major fund-raiser will go directly towards helping animals who have been taken to the pound, surrendered or rescued.

AWAR secretary Danielle Maclean said AWAR was a devoted group of volunteers and foster carers who looked after unwanted dogs, puppies, cats and kittens and aimed to educate the community about responsible pet ownership.

“We take in all types of creatures great and small and we look at getting them ‘Furever’ homes,” Ms Maclean said.

Ms Maclean said they had already had an “overwhelming” response from the community, with close to 100 presents being wrapped a day.

“Today we had a lady walk up to us and give us $20 as a donation and didn’t expect giftwrapping or anything,” she said.

“As soon as we say we’re with the rescue, people are so happy to come here to wrap their gifts.

This year the AWAR gift wrapping booths will also be selling a special calendar showcasing 12 locally rescued dogs for only $25, generously put together by a local photographer.

As AWARs biggest fundraiser for the year, Ms Maclean encouraged anyone who wanted to support the local initiative to come by the booths and have their gifts wrapped by friendly volunteers. She also encouraged people to “adopt, don’t shop”.

“Come and support us and when you’re looking at an animal you’ve got to consider them as a lifetime commitment,” she said.

“Adopt, don’t shop is our motto.”

WHILE it has been over a century since the Great War (WWI) fragmented the small land of Belgium, the country has not forgotten the Anzacs who fought beside them on the Western Front.

At the launch of a new touring exhibition put together by the Belgian Department of Foreign Affairs ‘The Great War in Broad Outlines - the history of the First World War’, Belgium Ambassador Mr Jean-Luc Bodson opened the tour by highlighting the continued appreciation his country has for our Diggers.

The exhibition tells a condensed version of WWI's defining moments and memorable battles, while highlighting the

relations that Belgium and Australia shared during the bloody war.

A century ago Belgium was invaded by the German army.

The small country refused to concede to the German ultimatum and the Belgian army resisted as best it could, but was quickly pushed to the corner of their country.

Mr Bodson said the Belgian army had fought tirelessly to try to maintain the freedom of the small portion of territory, and then its allies came to the rescue.

“The British declared war on Germany and with them came the Australian troops, the bravest of them all,” Mr Bodson said in his opening speech.

“I can assure you that 100

years later in Belgium we have not forgotten the bravery and the courage which your ancestors, your great uncles and grandfather came, fought and died indeed.

“It is still very much alive in our collective memory and if you go to Belgium you will notice that if you just say you are Australian, you will be very much appreciated because people remember it.”

The exhibition, which is set up at the AlburyCity Council foyer, showcases how the legacy of the Great War still lives on in Belgium and pays tribute to the immense sacrifice suffered by the Anzacs a century ago.

The exhibition will be on display in the council foyer until Friday, 6 January before setting off on a nationwide tour.

Santas pop up in the spirit of Christmas

“Rail passengers in the bush deserve modern, comfortable trains that require less maintenance and are more reliable.

“Boosting jobs and skills in regional NSW is a huge priority for the NSW Government and this is another example of our commitment to the cause.”

The new fleet will replace the 60 XPT passenger cars currently operating on the NSW TrainLink network, taking customers between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Dubbo, and going through regional towns including Bathurst, Orange, Taree, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, Casino, Goulburn and Albury.

It is expected that the new XPT trains will be on the tracks by the early 2020s.

CHRISTMAS time really does bring out the good in people.

It comes without saying that much support is being given and received by organisations and community groups across the Border and Wodonga TAFE industry VCAL students and the Wodonga Lions Club are no exceptions.

The Lions Club and Wodonga Men’s Shed members cut and painted 48 giant Santas leading up to Christmas, selling them at $120 each to raise funds for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC) Trust Fund, and other not-for-profit agencies on the Border.

Wodonga TAFE industry VCAL students have set up giant Santas at their Social Raw venue at the Wodonga Plaza to help sell-off what’s left of them while gaining experience in retail.

“The money we are raising through these Santas will be supporting the cancer centre and other charities and having them here at Social Raw is also helping the students with their retail experience too,” Lions club secretary Harold Cover said.

“We’ve so far raised about $5000 through selling these Santas already and now we only have five left.”

Mr Cover said that in previous years the Lions Club would rent out the Santas to local residents and businesses as well as install them, but now with members getting older it became a precautionary issue so they agreed to sell them.

“In the past we had a set of 120 of these Santas and we used to hire them out to shop keepers and residents and we used to put them up and take them down,” he said.

However, now we are all getting a bit older, it’s quite risky climbing up ladders and then there’s the issue of OH&S.” AWRCC Trust Fund board member Bernie Squire was “delighted” with the support from both the Lions club and other community groups who have fund-raised for the AWRCC Trust Fund.

While the AWRCC was a “purpose built facility”, Mr Squire said it was good to liven it up with the theme of Christmas through decorations like the Santa.

“Just around this time of the year we’d like to put a few decorations in to the place to make the time of those enduring cancer treatment a little more festive if we can,” he said.

THE NSW Government has reinvested $300 million in savings from an order for new trains for the Sydney train network into the new country fleet.

The contract for the new XPT fleet will also set a target for 100 per cent assembly in NSW, with a preference towards regional NSW, meaning more jobs for regional areas.

The target means that tenderers for the new fleet will be actively competing to offer the best possible deal for regional NSW. This will include assembling significant components in the regions, as well as stabling and maintaining the trains in regional NSW. Earlier this year, the NSW Government announced that it would commit a further $50 million to speed up the delivery of new XPT trains, which would see the procurement process kicking off in the first half of next year - two years earlier than promised.

“It’s fantastic that a faster, modern, comfortable train fleet is on the way for rail passengers in the bush but it’s even better that there’s been a commitment to assemble large parts of these new trains in the areas where they will be used,” Albury MP Greg Aplin said.

Taxman lives to give

By Monique Kuzeff IT WAS gift and food relief galore at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in Albury on Tuesday morning, when ATO staff handed over about three full shopping trolleys worth of goods and almost $5000 to local charities.

ATO’s Ainsley Stone presented spokespersons from Kangaloola Wild-

life Centre, Broughton House, and Restart Albury Wodonga with money raised through the sale of chocolates and other fund-raising activities by ATO staff throughout the year.

This year UnitingCare received gifts and food to assist people in need this Christmas.

Having been involved in ATO’s Christmas Giving Tree as portfolio

leader since its inception, Ro McGillivray said every year she had been more “overwhelmed” by the generosity of the staff at ATO. “It’s really nothing for most people to hand over a can or a box or pick up an extra toy at Christmas, and they know that even giving just a little thing can make a huge difference to someone else,” Ms McGillivray said.

Almost $90,000 has been raised by staff at the Albury ATO over five years through fund-raisers during Christmas, Easter and other annual occasions.

Items included in the donation this round included canned peas, pasta sauces, noodles, baked beans, UHT milk and cereal as well as personal hygiene items, skateboards, fishing rods, and other toys just to name a few.

RURAL Housing Network (RHN) welcomed a $1.3 million investment from the Victorian Government’s Rapid Housing Assistance Fund - Homelessness, which will enable it to purchase six new homes for those in need.

RHN CEO Celia Adams said the grant was part of the government’s response to priority recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

The Rapid Housing Assistance Fund provides up to $48.8 million for additional social housing.

“In the first round, Rapid Housing Fund - Family Violence, we received $2.1 million which enabled us to purchase 10 houses for those who have experienced family violence,” Ms Adams said.

“So, we are really pleased to receive a further $1.3 million in this second phase of the allocations for properties with some furnishings, designed to assist those with recent experience of rough sleeping.

“In the first round we contributed $700,000 or 25 per cent of the project costs and the same will happen again this time, with us contributing $400,000.”

Ms Adams welcomed the grant and the recent Victorian Government announcement of $109 million over five years to address the state’s growing homelessness problem.

“We are really pleased to see the State Government committing to this funding when the Australian government is still to provide a definite answer on the continuation of the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness funding which will end on 30 June,” she said.

“This lack of certainty affects all homelessness organisations and their staff, because they can’t plan with any surety for next year.”

A LARGE multi-cultural crowd joined together at St Matthew's Anglican Church at the weekend for a multi-faith carols that welcomed persons from all backgrounds and cultures.

The theme proposed an interfaith carols service with readings from the Bible, Qur’an and poems read by representatives of faith groups and community leaders. Also in attendance were advocates for refugees, Indigenous recognition and marriage equality.

Health Minister Sussan Ley also made an appearance accompanied by nurses, doctors, and paramedics with an ambulance and NSW Rural Fire Service fire truck placed outside in the forecourt.

All donation raised on the day will go towards both St Matthew’s Crisis Care and the NSW Rural Fire Service.

By Monique Kuzeff SANTA was spotted early this Christmas at Albury and District Private Nursing Home (ADPNH), treating the residents to a photo opportunity with friends and family.

It’s not every day that you get to take a selfie with Santa, but a crowd of senior residents got that privilege thanks to Vicinity Centres who allowed their centre Santa to visit the home on Thursday.

Everyone stepped up to the Christmas theme, dressing up in Santa hats and attire alike to spread the Christmas cheer.

ADPNH lifestyle co-ordinator Sharon McMahon said it was great to see families come together and visit their older relatives.

“The response from the

residents has been fantastic, they love it when we put on events like this.”

Ms McMahon said the Vicinity Santa had been visiting

residents at Albury and District Private Nursing Home for years now, and each year residents looked forward to his return.

Fun run raises big bucks WODONGA Middle Years College recently held an adidas School Fun-Run. Students hit the pavement seeking sponsorship from the local community to raise money for their school, and thanks to their efforts, the school raised over $2500.

The healthy push didn’t stop at the school gates, with families also encouraged to join the movement.

The program also provides students and families with additional tools and practical advice from health partner Bupa to encourage ongoing healthy

habits at home.

Each student household is invited to participate in the Bupa Family Challenge to help families adopt lifelong healthier habits.

The School Fun Run program has been running Australia-wide since 1987, with participating schools raising over $85 million in extra funding.

Many schools rely on this revenue to enhance facilities and upgrade school equipment and supplies.

In addition to individual school efforts, program partner CUA has also do-

nated a further $325,000 to schools via their Community Care initiative.

CUA chief executive, Rob Goudswaard, said they were passionate about supporting local communities again this year.

“We always strive to be part of positive change and a program like the school fun run has a great impact on the next generation,” Mr Goudswaard said.

Self employment moves afoot THE Federal Government recently launched the Encouraging Entrepreneurship and Self-Employment initiative to encourage young Australians to start their own business.

Minister for Employment Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash said the initiative would provide practical support to young people who wanted to turn their business idea into reality and create a job for themselves and other Australians.

“Self-employment and entrepreneurship are real options for young people who are unemployed, but only a small number of them choose to pursue such opportunities,” Minister Cash said.

“This initiative will help support young people to develop their ideas into a business.”

The Encouraging Entrepreneurship and Self Employment initiative

includes four key measures: SelfStart online hub; this new website will be the starting point for young people who wish to explore and develop their ideas into a successful business.

SelfStart will connect young people to existing services and programs, as well as provide information that will assist them to start a business.

SelfStart is located at www.jobactive.gov.au/selfstart ‘Exploring being my own boss’ workshops; these workshops are designed to engage potential entrepreneurs and provide them with a taste of what is involved in self-employment and entrepreneurship. Workshops will be delivered nationally by existing New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) providers, with 1000 places available each year.

Entrepreneurship facilitators; these facilitators will be located in three regions where there is high youth unemployment and low rates of youth self-employment; Cairns, Hunter (including Newcastle) and Launceston-North-East Tasmania.

FOR the first time in the nine-year history of the Christmas Spending Index, more Australians are looking to their debit and EFTPOS cards instead of their credit cards to pay for their Christmas gift shopping.

Cash payments are also on the decline, with only 20 per cent of shoppers relying on this traditional payment method for their Christmas spending.

As part of the annual Christmas Spending Index, the Retail Council looks at shoppers spending behaviours and preferences and payment methods for the Christmas period.

The Retail Council is the the representative group for the nation’s leading retailers.

“This year, 40 per cent of Aussies will reach for their debit cards at the tills while doing their Christmas shopping, compared with 35 per cent planning to use credit. In 2015, credit use was around 37 per cent, and debit only 32 per cent,” said Steve Wright, Acting CEO of the Retail Council.

“We’ve noticed a big difference between men and women in their spending behaviours. Women are much more inclined to use debit than men, relying on funds in the bank accounts to pay for their Christmas gift purchases.

Men, on the other hand, are using their credit cards more at a higher rate than their female shopping counterparts.”

While making their Christmas purchases, value for money is the number one priority for shoppers this festive season.

Foster carers ANGLICARE Victoria worker Tori Smith is on the hunt for a foster family for three brothers in need of a loving home.

The boys aged between 7 and 15, can no longer live with their birth family. Tori spoke to us about what a difference a loving foster family could make to their lives.

What are the boys like needing care?

Mason is the oldest. He enjoys sport and spending time with his friends. Dylan, the second oldest, is mature for his age and enjoys chess and reading.

Brayden, the youngest, loves being outdoors and has a good sense of humour.

Unfortunately, they have all experienced some tough times and can no longer live with their birth family.

What would the boys’ ideal

foster family look like?

Ideally, they need a couple without children or a couple with adult children no longer living at home. People who can devote plenty of time to the boys are needed, so it would be great if one of the carers didn’t work full-time. A carer with a background in health, education or community services would help, but isn’t essential as Anglicare offers full training.

Mostly, Anglicare needs people who have a real heart for kids, empathy, and patience.

What support is available for their chosen foster family?

Anglicare wants to talk to potential carers about what they would specifically require in order to provide great care for the boys. As a minimum, their foster family will receive a gen-

erous carers allowance, a fully maintained car, comprehensive training and 24-hour support.

What would you say to people thinking about becoming foster carers?

In addition to working for Anglicare Victoria, Tori Smith is also a foster carer himself because he thinks it’s really worthwhile.

You don’t need to be a super-hero, but you do need to be committed, patient and ready to stretch your comfort-zone.

Overall, it’s incredibly rewarding to watch children learn new skills, overcome obstacles and grow into amazing young people.

Carevan founder Dr John Brabant and Carevan Sunsmiles Program manager Cathy Carboon met with NSW Government Oral

Health Promotion and Prevention members last week to discuss the introduction of the Carevan Sunsmiles program statewide.

There is a global increase in dental disease and this could lead to a public health crisis.

Dr Brabant believes that the Carevan Sunsmiles Program, which began on the Border, can go a long way to turning things around.

The program has a focus on dental education, oral health promotion and fluoride varnish application.

The program was established several years ago at Wodonga West Primary School followed

by Glenroy Public School and Homebush West Primary School in Sydney.

Through the use of dental puppets the students are taught how to brush their teeth, informed about nutrition, and a fluoride vanish is applied to their teeth which cuts the decay rate by 43 per cent.

“We have the ability to change children’s lives through simple prevention,” Dr Brabant said.

AS A largely agricultural and farming region, it should come as a concern that the risk of flystrike for wool growers is increased after the region experienced the wettest September in recent years. About 114 millimetres of rain fell across New South Wales during September, exceeding the previous record September high of 90.26mm in 1903. In Australia, flystrike is most commonly carried out by lucilia cuprina, a fly which is attracted to faecal and urine stains, fleece rot, footrot and wounds in the sheepskin.

Flystrike begins in October and November, but with the recent flooding this year could potentially be “worse” than usual, according to expert animal health veterinarian Dominec Dell’Osa. “I think all the things are lining up for it to potentially be a worse year for flystrike in the region, and producers should be aware and implement prevention tactics early,” Mr Dell’Osa said.

“It will be a bad year for flies because we’ve had fairly warm moist conditions, and we’ve come in to a milder spring.

“Because a lot of the sheep would’ve been on wet feed, sometimes they get diarrhoea and that means the breach end of the sheep gets covered with sequel staining which tends to attract the flies.”

Not only does it adversely impact on sheep welfare, it also affects profitability and enterprise aspects for producers, Mr Dell’Osa said.

“You don’t want to be losing

your sheep to flystrike. It’s the cost of treatment and the cost to go through your flock and check them regularly.

“I encourage producers to be vigilant and be checking their flock and seeking our treatments for prevention of flystrike, including incorporating a fly active chemical in their programs to give them more peace of mind.”

Our audio standard has moved in many directions. Low resolution music is now normal, music organisation and collection gathering along with affordable multi-room music primarily developed

by Sonos has reshaped many homes. High-end audio standards, the exclusive domain of vinyl records is now being challenged and therefore digital standards must adapt.

Many of the leading brands have had products on the market for a number of years, until now the only real benefit was the person looking to replicate the sound quality of vinyl onto a storage device.

At the most basic level Blutooth will provide a significant change, currently the sound quality is performing to about 25 per cent resolution to a CD. The next generation Bluetooth will have the capacity to exceed the CD. This is an important step as we already have two high-level streaming services in Tidal and Deezer - currently the resolution is beneficial to

only the proper hifi systems.

The long-term outcome will be the removal of a lot of sub quality equipment that sits in stores today as more understand the limitations of music compression.

In a year where vinyl records have had significant growth, and video streaming is threatening other formats, the emergence of no-nonsense multi-playback units at a high quality of both video and audio not only reshaped the affordability, operations became easier and more family members engaged.

Local Sport Water ski comp success ALBURY Wodonga Water Ski Club hosted the fourth leg of the prestigious Malibu Series at Lincoln Causeway at the weekend.

The NSW-based point water ski competition also included events in Newcastle, Temora, Albury, Canberra, Sydney and Port Macquarie.

The event was for slalom skiers, jumpers and trick skiers of all ages and levels of ability.

Skiers while competing in their age divisions are also skied for the point score at the end of the season with big prizes and incentives.

This was the first major tournament for the Albury Wodonga Club this season with a fiveround slalom in March before local skiers head to Moomba and the Nationals in Perth.

The club declared the event a major success.

“It was a huge success for the club's first event for the 2016/'17 season after floods, jump rebuild and building renovations all over a very tough winter break,” club committee member Gary Humphrie said.

“Weather was excellent and a field of over 55 skiers took to the water."

In the Junior events, the strength of the local club shone through with Mitchell Laws and Lachy Butlin battling out for the podium finish with Laws taking the gold after two rounds of exciting slalom skiing.

Daniel Finnimore also showed his class, setting a new club record for his age division.

The Girls Junior Division was a close event and although local star Grace Butlin skied well, it was young up and coming star from Yarrawonga Layne Moroney that took out a very close slalom and trick event.

Layne is returning from a serious knee injury so a great performance on the day.

The Open Men again was hotly contested but the class of veteran Mitchell Barber from Wagga just holding out local star and club president David Finnimore to take the Open Slalom podium place.

The newly renovated jump proved a success with excellent scores across all divisions.

Callan Ashcroft took the medal in the boy's division in a tight contest with Mason Crocker, however, it was the Queensland entrant Ryan Sciacca who nailed the jump of the day with a massive 48 metres.

Chief organiser Jenny Butlin was thrilled with the event as our local skiers now start the program running through to State Titles and Nationals in the 2017 season.

By Paul Ingwersen BENDED Elbow Cycling Team development rider Charly McMillan won the A grade in the Albury Wodonga Panthers Cycling Club criterium championship at the Wodonga TAFE driver training centre.

The win followed a stunning show of strength over the final laps.

The A grade was 35 minutes and raced at an average speed of almost 44 km/hr. McMillan hit the front after 27 minutes, and rode alone, averaging 43.7 km/hr in the final laps of the 1.6 km circuit while increasing his gap.

The race started with mountain bike strong man Tyla Wyndham in his first criterium race, hitting the front and holding a solid tempo above 40km/hr for almost the first 20 minutes.

While pure strength plays out well in a mountain bike event, road racing requires a level of cunning and saving your beans for the critical moments. The experienced road riders were content to follow his wheel and fast pace, and watch the clock tick down.

After the 20-minute mark, the race protagonists became motivated, with Brad Rose eventually forcing himself off the front and holding the bunch at bay for five minutes. Eventually veteran Wayne Hildred and Marcus Warner from the Alpine Club acted and rode off the front aiming to bridge across to Brad Rose.

Charly McMillan, sensing opportunity

The A grade field on the start line. latched onto their wheel while the two visitors swapped turns in an effort to close the gap. Just as contact was made, McMillan flew up the outside, leaving the riders looking for someone to start another chase.

Their previous effort was apparent and with no immediate chase, McMillan extended his lead. Eight minutes later he was further off the front and crossed the line for a well-deserved victory with Brad Rose in second, followed by Tim Guy in third. Maddie Wright was the first A grade woman.

In B grade, Matt Hamblin was first over the line followed by Ryan Clifford, Andrew Lang and Ken Payne. Chris Little took out the C Grade championship ahead of Zac Owen, with Steve Young third.

The D grade race featured a mixed bunch with Milton Mann taking the honours followed by track veteran Cyril Land, Ruth Little 3rd and paracyclist Andy Falconer in fourth.

NORTH Albury are in a strong position after day one of their Cricket Albury Wodonga first provincial first grade game at Birrallee Park against Wodonga Raiders.

Raiders won the toss and batted first, but were all out for just 105, thanks to some impressive bowling from Greg Daniel 7/48 and Robert Harret who didn’t take a wicket but tightened things up with 0/2 off seven overs including five maidens.

Batting at six, Joel Felshingham topscored with 25 while Jess Griffiths at first drop was the only other batsman to make the twenties, finishing with 22.

In reply, North Albury look to have the upper-hand at 3/85 with Brendan Simmons, not out 19, and Greg Daniels, 22, steered the side out of danger after they were looking in a little trouble at 3/45.

Also in a strong position in the first round of two-day games is Lavington who batted first against the luckless St Patricks and set them 194 to chase at Wilson Park.

Jarryd Weeding top-scored with 39 while the reliable Bradley Dalbosco chimed in with 28 while Benjamin Jones made 3/29.

At Billson Oval, the match between East Albury and Albury is evenly poised going into day two next week.

East Albury batted first and were all out for 95, with Luke Brockhurst topscoring on 28. However, the day belonged to bowler Chris Sole who finished the innings with 6/23 off 15.5 overs including eight maidens.

At stumps Albury were in a spot of trouble at 6/46.

Meanwhile, Belvoir already have the first innings points at Kelly Park, thanks to an impressive bowling spell by Matthew Jaensch, who took 7/32 to have New City all out for 64.

In reply, Belvoir were 2/104 with Glen Vassallo not out on 54 and were in the box-seat for an outright win.

At Les Cheesley, Tallangatta will resume their first innings at 0/12 after Wodonga made 9/171 in their first innings.
