Vote of thanks for hard-working volunteer crew VOLUNTEERS from across the Noosa Shire were celebrated on Monday, 5 December for International Volunteers Day with a picnic brunch in The Lions Park. There was live entertainment, canoeing and a picnic under the trees for over 200 volunteers from throughout the shire. For more on the Voluteers Day event, turn to page 8.

Protest a bummer and is calling for legislative changes to allow councils the power to designate nude beaches within their local government area.

Australian Sex Party Queensland president Mark McGovern said the Sex Party was attempting to change legislation by writing to the Attorney General and Police Minister.

Speaking with Noosa Today after the demonstration, Mr McGovern said the protest was a great success due to

the high interest from the media.

Among the attendees was one of the 11 men recently arrested for wilful exposure at A-Bay, which sparked the furore. Mr McGovern said the Sex Party was helping the man with his complaint to the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland about the “sexist pattern of arrests”.

Mark Ryan following the demonstration and said “he seemed interested in the matter and undertook to contact us once he had read the materials which we gave him”.

Since the demonstrations, Mr Bristow has been criticised for ostracising Mr Elmes with some residents suggesting it would be beneficial to the nudist movement if Mr Elmes was supportive of the changes to the law.

By Jolene Ogle MORE than 15,000 people flocked to Cooroy on the weekend to celebrate the annual Christmas in Cooroy festival.

Friday night kicked off with the official turning on of the beautiful Ri-con Christmas tree which looked even more spectacular than ever before. Special stars on the tree have been dedicated to loved ones that are no longer here and their stories were shared on the wall adjacent to the tree.

It was a magical evening with carols sung by The Cherry Ripes and a bit of unseasonal snow as well.

The QMP Shop Window Trail was also launched on Friday night with 23 businesses throughout town decorating their window.

Visiting the windows is a great way to spend a few hours with the kids and everyone is welcome to vote for their favourite window before 28 December to go in the draw to win a $100 Cooroy Supa IGA Voucher.

Saturday was the main event with the Cooroy Fish 'n' Chips Santa sack races starting the day followed by the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group great Santa race.

Santa was a big hit on the day.

A GRANDMOTHER has been left “mortified� after she saw four people sunbaking nude at the popular Noosa Wood’s dog beach.

The grandmother, who was at the beach with her nine-year-old granddaughter and who asked to remain anonymous, said she was appalled to see one couple lying naked at the cutin right near the carpark of the beach. “I’m not a prude, but I find it disrespectful,� she said. “I take my grandchildren to that beach because it is safe so I think of this as a family beach.�

The grandmother said she approached one couple who were naked and told them they should go to A-Bay where they were less likely to offend children. “I was very polite, but they completely ignored me,� she said. “I’m aware A-Bay currently has its issues, but it’s wrong to come here (to Noosa Spit).�

The grandmother said she went to the Hastings Street Police Beat but it was closed. “Something needs to be done,� she said. “Families shouldn’t have to be worried about seeing naked people on the beach at a family beach. Let them have one area where they can go. “I don’t even know where A-Bay is, but for those who do it let them have an area to themselves and don’t come onto family beaches.�

Cottage ready to help out FOUNDERS of the new Katie Rose Cottage hospice have been busy getting prepared to welcome their first patient as early as January and are already opening three charity shops throughout the shire.

Katie Rose Cottage chairperson Carol Raye said the organisation had received its charity licence and was excited to look to the future.

“We’ve been working really hard and the community support has been amazing,” she said. “(The charity licence) will now allow the charity to proceed immediately with the opening of the op-shops in Cooroy and Tewantin, to provide funding for the new hospice.”

Carol was busy helping volunteers set up their Cooroy op-shop on Tuesday (6 December) before helping with the fit-out of the two Tewantin stores.

Carol said she expected the opshops would open next week, and thanked the community for their invaluable support.

“At Katie Rose we recognise that it

is an honour and a privilege to support someone at the end of their life ‘when every moment matters’,” she said.

The Katie Rose Cottage should be able to receive patients from early next year, but they hope to offer outreach and counselling services before the end of this year.

The current hospice facility near Cooroy will offer two ensuited guest rooms along with outreach, counselling services and administrative services.

The Katie Rose Cottage board plans to open a four to six-bed hospice and is currently working to raise funds to secure a suitable property.

“Our task is to raise and provide funds for palliative care services to continue sustainably and we will be opening the Cooroy and Tewantin op-shops next week and plan to open at other sites in the future.

"This will be supported with a sound strategic fund-raising plan which will be implemented in the New Year,” Ms Raye said.

“Our Cooroy op-shop is in Emerald Street, opposite IGA, a bright

large shop that our volunteers have been busy preparing.

"In Tewantin our two op-shops are in the Atrium and are also supported by a team of volunteers who are very excited to be preparing it to open.

"Please call in to meet our friendly volunteers, find a bargain and support our work.

“Any donations of quality saleable products will be gratefully received at both locations, or if you wish to become a volunteer please contact us at admin@katierosecottage.org.au or pop in to one of the shops and talk to one of our friendly volunteers!”

Ms Raye said she had no words to express her gratitude for the community support the hospice had received.

“We thank all of them (the community) for ‘stepping up’ to support a vision based on the original Katie Rose model that was introduced by the original co-founders,” she said.

Councillors come to zero understanding on emissions

By Hollie Harris NOOSA councillors met on Tuesday to formally endorse the memorandum of understanding for the Zero Emissions Noosa Collaborative Community Partnership.

When climate change think tank Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE) visited Noosa in May it sparked the

beginning of a collective group of community organisations to begin working together to achieve zero net emissions in Noosa shire by 2026.

The partnering groups include Noosa Country, Central Queensland Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Noosa Integrated Catchment Association, Noosa Junc-

tion Traders Associations, Noosa Shire Residents and Ratepayers Association, Sunshine Coast Environment Council, Tourism Noosa, University of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Shire Council.

Zero Emissions Noosa said the Noosa community has long been a leader in demonstrating the strong links that have occurred between its

environmental values and economic performance and this strategy represents a continuation of that journey.

It said that the groups could work together taking a collaborative approach through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with an aim to develop a joint understanding of the current sources and level of emissions in the Noosa community and

potential responses to reduce them.

Mayor Tony Wellington was the signatory on behalf of the council as the final MOU was formally presented and will now be endorsed by the council. Although the MOU places no obligations on the council, the community alliance expects that various working groups will be supported.

‘Thanks’ for vital few minutes Ron Lane’s

people FOR the average Australian family 7 November, 2015, was just another day on the calendar - but for the members of the Mills family it was indeed a day to remember.

With a gathering of family members what could be better than a day at Noosa's Main Beach; a beautiful day, small gentle rolling surf, safe for elderly family members to swim.

One family member was Mrs Margaret Mills, a lady in her early eighties - but despite her age she was still very active and as such enjoyed a dip in the surf.

With the family settled on the beach, positioned adjacent to the flagged area, for Margaret to enjoy a swim between the flags it was just a short walk.

Through a small gutter on to a sand bank, safe and sound. But what happened next was one of those freak accidents - the type that despite patrol observation and care cannot be prevented.

Happy in the safe conditions between the flags Margaret, while swimming was involved in a head collision with another swimmer; a young man on a very small wave.

Following the collision he stopped, spoke and asked if the lady was OK. Margaret replied that she was and he started to head towards the beach.

Suddenly on trying to resume swimming Margaret discovered that she had lost the use of her limbs and being in thigh deep water she re-

What then followed for Margaret was for her a fight for life - 18 minutes of CPR and administration of oxygen by patrolling members, just above water's edge.

The work of the patrol resulted in Margaret’s condition stabilising, and once this was achieved she was immediately transported to Nambour Hospital.

At 84 years of age and having swallowed large amounts of water

this lady was to spend her next two weeks in the hospital. This was to be followed by a further two weeks in the Eden Rehabilitation Hospital at Cooroy. Following this, Margaret took a couple of months at home surrounded by family and friends to fully recover.

“Once her recovery was complete, and despite now being 86 years of age, she insisted on going for a recovery swim at Main Beach,” her daughter Kerri Smith said.

“So surrounded by some four generations of family she did just that.

Following this at a later date Margaret also insisted on visiting the Noosa Surf Club to personally thank those involved; and to mark the occasion she had with her one of her favorites, raspberry slices which she happily fed to her now “admiring patrol mates”.

“Both Margaret and our family want the lifesavers to know how grateful we all are; and we thought coming on Christmas it would be a great time to once again say thank

you not only for Margaret and family but all other people that you help.”

Now some 12 months on her recovery is complete and she is not only mentally alert, but also plays bridge, a card game called 500, and is a member of a book club.

A remarkable lady, whose presence, (along with that of her family) on Noosa's Main Beach is something that our lifesavers look forward to enjoying for many years to come.

For the clubbies involved, this is indeed a Merry Christmas - and definitely, one to remember!

Lunch aims to honour helpers

IN honour of International Volunteers Day, the Noosa Council thanked more than 200 volunteers for their tireless contribution to the local community in a special gathering on Monday 5 December.

Mayor Tony Wellington said Noosa was home to more than 300 community groups whose volunteers were making a big difference through all sorts of social, cultural and environmental pursuits.

Meals on Wheels served up a special brunch for the volunteers in Lions Park at Noosa Sound, while Noosa District Concert Band provided the entertainment and Noosa Outriggers gave canoe trips.

“Our volunteers donate uncountable hours to improving our community and our environment.

Their efforts help make the Noosa Shire a wonderful place to live,” Cr Wellington said.

“This picnic brunch has been the council’s way of saying thank you.”

International Volunteer Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, is celebrated annually.

“Volunteering is a great way for individuals to give back to the community. Research shows that volunteers may enjoy personal benefits too, with better health outcomes and increased wellbeing. So volunteering is the ultimate win-win situ-

Flying, dying COUNCIL is urging anyone who comes across dead greyheaded flying-fox young to contact the RSPCA hotline immediately.

Dead flying-fox young have been found along the coast from Victoria to Queensland over the past few weeks, due to starvation from dwindling habitat and an acute food shortage.

According to prominent flying-fox experts, the recent strong El Nino weather pattern may also be a contributing factor to the deaths.

Noosa council’s flyingfox management officer Tyron de Kauwe said council was keeping a close eye on local populations and working closely with carers, other councils and the state government (DEHP) to monitor the progress of this event.

“Dead flying-fox young have been found in nearby areas, but it appears that Noosa Shire’s coastal camps have not yet been affected,” he said.

Grey-headed flying-foxes are listed as a threatened species with declining populations. Starving young flying-

foxes lose the strength to hold onto their mothers, which produce less milk when food supplies are scarce.

If any member of the public finds a young flying-fox in distress, call the RSPCA hotline on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or call a local bat rescue group on 5485 3393 or 5441 6200, and the nearest trained and registered carer will be directed to them.

Do not try to handle flyingfoxes under any circumstance.

If scratched or bitten, seek medical advice immediately.

Marie Vat, who was a long-time local of Cooroy, loved the lighting of the Ri-con Cooroy Christmas tree and will this year be honoured with a memorial star.

Marie’s light shines on MARIE Vat was a long-time local of Cooroy and one of her favourite events was the lighting of the Ricon Cooroy Christmas tree.

Marie passed away early this year just nine short weeks after being diagnosed with cancer on the same day that Cooroy lit up the tree last year.

“Mum loved the event so much that she still attended the tree lighting ceremony even though she’d received such devastating news that very day,” daughter Anthea Wood said.

Marie was a vibrant, bright person with flaming red hair who loved to wear bright colours, particularly orange. She passed away at 66 years young and is very

much missed by her family.

Marie and her husband Tony moved to Cooroy in the early 1980s and they have been very much active at the Cooroy RSL as Tony is an ex-serviceman and was on the board many years ago.

Tony and Marie had two daughters, Anthea Wood and Trudie Waite, and Marie was a very dedicated family person who brightened up the lives of her loved ones.

The family have sponsored a star for Marie as she shone so bright in her life that it is only fitting that she will shine for all of Cooroy on the Christmas tree she loved so much.

The shareholders, who have supported the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Bendigo Bank Community Bank branches since their inception (with the Cooroy Community Bank Branch opening in 2002) will now receive their eighth dividend.

Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) chairman Rick Cooper said shareholders would each receive a share of the $119,296.66 total dividend, based on 7 cents per $1 share of 1,704,238 shares.

The dividend, which is to be paid by the end of December will be fully franked.

“Receiving another nice dividend payment is fantastic for the company’s investors,” Mr Cooper said.

“This latest result is a culmination

of a lot of hard work and local support from our North Shore, Noosa and hinterland communities. As we continue to say, bank with us and everybody benefits.”

Mr Cooper said the directors of SCCFSL decided the dividend was just reward to all the shareholders who initially funded the establishment of the branches.

“They’ve enthusiastically watched their development and business revenue has grown every year since our inception. It’s another great result for our shareholders, SCCFSL board, branch managers and staff who are all very proud of our continuing work in our communities. Without our shareholders’ support, our branches simply wouldn’t exist,” Mr Cooper said.

Tewantin Community Bank branch manager Wayne Hoens said the shareholders wouldn’t be the only locals to benefit from the eighth dividend.

The company’s remaining profits are being channelled back into communities via a range of donations and sponsorships.

“As many locals are aware, these include sponsorships of the Noosa International Film Festival, Noosa Arts Theatre, Noosa Country Show, Pomona King of the Mountain, Christmas in Cooroy and several community groups, organisations, sporting groups and schools,” he said.

“The total funds given back to the greater Noosa, and Coolum and North Shore communities has now exceeded $2.1 million.

“In coming months the board will continue its program of community grants that will release further funds to assist with a wide range of projects.

We’re really proud to be involved with a bank that’s giving locals a real say in their financial future.”

Race goes quackers THE great Duck Race is back again following great success at last year’s event. The race is the major fundraiser for the Noosa Heads Nippers and last year hundreds turned out to cheer on the ducks as they came in to shore on Noosa Main Beach.

The great Duck Race will be held on Friday 9 December, at 5pm, on Noosa Main Beach - at the front of the Noosa Heads Surf Club.

Event organisers said last year was a great success and they’re expecting an even bigger event this year.

Tickets to the event are $40 per person and includes a barbecue dinner, drinks and a numbered duck that will race to the shore for a chance to win a cash prize.

The ducks will be released in Laguna Bay at 6pm and the first one back wins the money. Tickets are available at www.duckrace.com.au The Noosa Nippers will also hold their Christmas break-up party along with the major fund-raiser for the season, the Duck Race.

The activities will include a walkto-wall swim, which is all about participation and having fun. All about the video THE Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation is hoping a new video produced by the Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) will help locals understand the significance of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve.

The seven-minute video, which was shot and produced in Noosa, highlights the beauty of the region and uses locals to describe the meaning of a biosphere reserve.

NCBA founding president Dick Barnes said the purpose of the video is to engage the Noosa community to better understand the Biosphere Reserve and its biodiversity.

“This project’s aim is to enhance biodiversity conservation by creating a dialogue with the community,” he said.

The NCBA has been hosting and participating in community events to show the video and discuss people’s level of understanding.

“We ask community members what they already know about biosphere reserves and then compare that understanding after watching the video. The results are very positive,” Dick said.

According to the NCBA, the project has measured a 90 per cent understanding from community members after watching the video compared to less than 30 per cent beforehand.

“Our hope is that with more locals understanding the value of our Noosa Biosphere Reserve and the opportunities to get involved we will see an increase in volunteer numbers across our grass roots organisations,” Dick said.

THE media were treated to a sneak peek of the Santa’s Classy Helpers pop-up department store on Tuesday, 6 December as volunteers prepared to help over 285 local families.

Santa’s Classy Helpers have been busy throughout the year collecting toys, food and special Christmas treats for local families doing it tough.

On Tuesday The J was buzzing as the volunteers set-up the pop-up department-style store where those in need can “shop” for free.

Classy Lady boutique owner Lorraine Kenway is the founder of the charity and says this year they expect to help more than 285 families, which will be more than 800 children.

Volunteers began setting up the thousands of items early in the morning and although exhausted, were very excited for the next day’s arrival of families who are very much in need of some extra Christmas cheer.

The aisles were filled with toys piled high for all age groups and some gifts for the mums as well. There were rows of food and fresh produce, toiletries and clothes all kindly donated throughout the year from many Noosa businesses.

Surfers riding the airwaves

By Hollie Harris NOOSA film-makers Phil Jarratt and Shaun Cairns have uncovered the story of a golden decade in surfing, starting in 1956, when surfing was transformed into a sport and culture with its very own music, movies, fashion and heroes.

Men of Wood and Foam explores the fascinating story of the birth of the Australian surfing boom.

Through the stories of these Aussie pioneers the film retraces the roots of the modern Australian surfboard from finetuning the toothpick for wave riding in the ’40s through to the arrival of the Malibu chip, the development of the Okanui in the ’50s and the peroxide surf boom of the early ’60s.

Underpinning this exciting transformation was a small group of artisans who were affectionately known as The Brookvale Six. They started out in the 1950s making wooden surfboards in their backyards along Sydney’s eastern beaches before eventually moving to Brookvale where they experimented with “blowing foam” to make lighter and more responsive surfboards from plastics.

Noosa’s veteran surf jour-

nalist, editor, author, Noosa Today contributor and now film-maker Phil Jarratt lived through the exciting years of the surf boom, bargaining with The Brookvale Six for his first custom surfboards on the front lawns of their factories where they conducted Saturday morning sales.

During his career as editor of surf magazine Tracks, he became friends with the six as the boom wound down.

“I developed huge respect for these pioneers who really invented surf culture in Australia and in recent years I suddenly realized that they weren’t getting younger and their inspiring story had never been told. It was time to do it,” Phil said.

“Fortunately, in Foxtel’s Brian Walsh I found a kindred spirit who had also grown up with surfing embedded in his soul,” he said.

The Brookvale Six had not only supplied the entire country with surfboards, but also made design breakthroughs that put Australia at the forefront of the sport for decades to come - inspiring a never-before-seen evolution in Australian surf culture.

Sky’s the limit for school NOOSA District State High School students are flying high after scoring three of the 11 awards on offer at the Aerospace Education Awards.

The Noosa school is among 18 Queensland schools taking part in the Aerospace Gateway STEM program.

The Aerospace Education Awards recognised the efforts and achievements of students and teachers from all 18 Aerospace Gateway Schools, with the presentation ceremony

held at Parliament House earlier this month.

Sixty nominations were received this year and the selection of a winner in each category was very challenging, with the high standard of applications received and the clear demonstrations of passion for the aviation industry.

Over 170 students, parents, teachers and industry representatives were in attendance at the ceremony last Thursday.

Ticket to a better life A GENEROUS local who has been supporting nine children in Cambodia is calling on the Noosa community to help her fight against child abuse.

Trish Simpson is the secretary of the Australian Happy Hub Kampot committee and is running a raffle to help raise funds to build 10 wells in a Cambodian village.

“Currently there are three wells for 200 people and they have to walk for miles to get water. They do not have toilets and are living on the bare essentials,” Trish said.

“We also would like to be able to buy a large car to help with transport of the nine children that we are housing.”

Happy Hub grew from a run-in with a Cambodian orphanage scammer and Trish now works alongside a tight team to provide a home and positive outcomes for young Cambodian children.

Trish visited a sham orphanage in Siem Reap and was shocked to see how badly the children were treated, living without proper food or health care.

Along with now managing director Alecia Damico, Trish confronted the manager and asked how the funds were spent and learnt the children have parents but they have either alcohol or abuse issues and can’t provide care.

“It all got a bit dangerous so Alecia had to get out in the middle of the night without her belongings,” Trish said.

“She went to Kampot, where we now rent a property and she has managed to get guardianship over five of the children from that orphanage.

“We now have eight children who live in the Happy Hub house, we don’t call it an orphanage because it is a home for the children.”

Trish Simpson is the secretary of the Australian Happy Hub Kampot committee and is running a raffle to help raise funds to build 10 wells in a Cambodian village.

As well as supporting children, Happy Hub has also started a project to help farmers start farming again and have started installing wells for the village, but so far Alecia and Trish have funded most of the children’s care costs.

“Alecia Damico lives in the house with the children that she has guardianship over and to date her and I have been paying for everything, which is becoming increasingly difficult,” she said.

“We have rescued the children from sham orphanages, where they were being very badly mistreated. Some of the children have ongoing issues, such as

partial deafness from being beaten and many emotional issues.

“Alecia has now given up her life in America to raise the children and is doing an amazing job.”

To help gather support and funds for the children and charity, Trish is running a raffle with the grand prize either $10,000 cash or a trip for two to Cambodia worth $10,000 to see the work of Happy Hub Kampot.

Science strike force studied

By Emily Bates HOW best for students to finish a science physics unit than to put their knowledge to the test at the Ten Pin Bowling Centre?

Year 4 students had studied forces in term four and celebrated their hard work by watching forces at work.

Students used their new knowledge of pushes, pulls, gravity, friction, mass and speed to hopefully get a ‘strike’ in the alley.

Student Jorja said: ‘It was important to pick a ball that wasn’t too heavy or too light, and just the right size for your hand.

“It wasn’t as easy as I thought because the ball kept rolling to the side.”

Key science teacher Leonie Wilcox explained: “This term the students studied contact and non-contact forces used in games and 60 second challenges.

“Ten pin bowling was an excellent way to culminate the unit of work.”

“I got a strike!” said delighted student Samu.

“Once I worked out how to take the right number of steps, swing my arm freely and aim

The school said the ten pin bowling was enjoyed by all the Sunshine Beach learners and reinforced their understanding of the science concepts related to forces.

It is also an excellent game for young people to sharpen motor skills and their handeye co-ordination. Throwing the bowling ball and hitting the pins requires a great amount of hand-eye coordination.

This kind of focus stimulates mental alertness, concen-

tration and tactical strategy, the school said.

It was an exceptional opportunity to bring all the benefits of a practical, fun handson activity to strengthen and utilize the theoretical science knowledge being taught.

Sunshine Beach State School is taking enrolments in all year levels, Prep through to Year 6, for 2016.

The gallery will assist the emerging artist with curatorial reviews and exhibition development - valued at $750.

resident of the Sunshine Coast or south-east Queensland, had not held a solo exhibition in a gallery, whose sole income is not a product of their artwork and has not received national or international recognition of their art.

NOOSA District State High School Year 8 Junior School Pomona Campus students travelled to the Senior School Cooroy Campus this week to meet their teachers and undertaking introductory lessons for their 2017 Year 9 subjects.

The students enjoyed a hands-on humanities lesson, learning about the importance of sustainability, making new paper from the school’s discarded scrap paper.

The Year 8 students scooped the paper pulp that had been boiled and blended with banana leaves into screen sieved moulds, pressed the paper blend onto a corflute, and sponged off the excess moisture.

The hot, dry weather provided ideal paper drying conditions and the students next planned to use their newly created paper to make Christmas present gift tags.

The day was a hands-on approach to learning about their new school campus.

Plugged in to e-waste plan NOOSA residents dropped off more than four tonnes of e-waste in two days at the Council’s National Recycling Week collection point.

Waste education officer Emma Menzies said diverting the four tonnes of material from landfill had been a great result.

Ms Menzies said recycling rather than dumping e-waste helps to keep mercury, lead and other hazardous material out of the environment.

Many residents who dropped items off at the twoday collection site didn’t realise the council accepted e-waste for recycling, free of charge, Ms Menzies said.

She said that the council intends to maintain the ewaste service in the future.

Residents filled eight large wire cages with old televisions, computers, printers, scanners and other IT equipment at the National Recycling Week drop-off.

“Used electronic equipment contains finite resources such as copper, aluminium, nickel and zinc. Recycling your e-waste ensures these resources are reused,” Ms Menzies said.

MORE than 50 local primary school students have learned about threatened species and the risks they face from noxious weeds.

It was part of the Discovering Biodiversity Community Day, hosted by council’s Heritage Park Bushland Care Group.

The group received a $15,000 grant from SUEZ, a waste and water management company, towards weed management.

Fifty-two enthusiastic Good Shepherd Lutheran College Grade 5 students worked with volunteers to help rid Heritage Park of more than 70 bags of Singapore Daisy.

Council’s community partnerships officer Kylie Gordon said the students learned about the Richmond Birdwing

Butterfly and Glossy Black Cockatoos and how weeds such as Singapore Daisy can negatively impact these and other threatened species.

“The day would not have been possible without Heritage Park Bushland Care Group and its tireless leader Joan who applied for the SUEZ Community Grant, with support from NICA,” Ms Gordon said.

The Bushland Care Group is one of 18 across Noosa Shire that make up council’s Community Bushland Care Program.

The students learnt about flying-foxes and they met Lyn Boston from Bat Rescue Inc. who brought Phoebe the flying-fox along to meet the students.

Grants program provides funding for community groups to improve the quality of their local environment, educate communities about sustainability and improve local health and well-being.

“Joan and her team have eradicated Singapore Daisy in parts of Heritage Park. They do a tremendous job keeping our natural areas weed free, as do all of our Bushland Care Groups,” Ms Gordon said.

“It was great to see volunteers and students working side by side enjoying healthy, outdoor work enhancing the environment while learning about biodiversity and helping to preserve our threatened native wildlife.”

Car club is a real classic NOOSA’S Classic Car Club celebrated another year of successful events with a recent Christmas party at the Noosa Waterfront Restaurant and Bar. Club spokesperson Noel St John-Wood said the club’s event calendar was “full-on” this year with around 35 events held including social outings, car runs, shed tours, the Noosa Beach Classic Car Show, as well as the winter and summer Noosa Hill Climb events.

“It’s a great club to be part of and that’s reflected in the membership which is currently at 262, this year we have averaged five new members per month,” he said.

“We all have a passion for Classic Cars and I’m always impressed by the cars that people own or have just purchased and keep emerging

from restorations.

Noel said the Noosa region is just perfect for driving Classic cars with many of the club’s runs through the small towns of the Hinterland.

A BABY possum camped out between the books in Cooroy Library’s junior fiction section gave staff a surprise last week.

A staff member, returning some books to the shelves, spotted the possum hiding behind a copy of Ginger the Stray Kitten.

Staff suspect the possum snuck in through the doors to the children’s outside area.

“We thought it was ironic that Cooroy is known for the possum and we had a super cute one visiting Cooroy Library! It was a hot week, so maybe it was drawn in by the cool or just wanted a quick read,” Tracey King from the Library said.

Staff cordoned off the area and called in the Wilvos to rescue the furry visitor.

“Terrie from the Wilvos arrived soon after and escorted our little mischief-maker from

Step up, shire SHIRE residents at the (Cooroy Memorial Hall) 26 November meeting said the Noosa Council was sitting on their hands on this project, but the council’s excuse for faltering attempts was land ownership. The mayor and the five councillors were put where they are to do what is considered worthwhile for the shire’s ratepayers/residents. But it is not only the hall with which they are dragging their feet - there is the old Tewantin TAFE, the lack of encouraged retail/commercial expansion at Noosa Civic, maintenance works programs of acquired assets in newly finished estates, pursuit of State Government authorities to rectify the weed-overgrown Lake MacDonald and the killer railway roundabout at Myall Street in Cooroy. I hope the council can play an important role in seeking to facilitate the above. Does this last sentence sound familiar?

What with the coal sludge, which is already allowed by the Queensland Government, and the run-offs the reef will be destroyed. Queensland should be reminded that it is only a mere custodian of the reef ... the reef belongs to the world. We should be preserving it at all costs, not permitting a mine like Adini anywhere in the vicinity.

Mark Ryan MP’s mantra the other evening when asked about the situation was “the law is the law”. Well I say to you Mr Ryan and all the others who think like that, change the law, protect the reef. That is what you are there to do.

Close up the mine and any other development that threatens the reef. We have to protect the reef for generations to come.

Plastic fantastic RECENT comments regarding the removal of plastic bags for grocery shopping at shopping centres prompts me to put pen to paper. I understand South Australia has adopted this approach and Queensland is waiting to see how this fares. Ostensibly, the non-use of plastic bags at check-outs (ALDI excluded) should mean a drop in the price of groceries. According to Noosa IGA, no such policy is being considered in the event the foregoing occurs.

Currently most people I have spoken to use their grocery plastic bags in their kitchen tidy (on an average one and a half plastic shopping bags per day). Apart from being unhygienic, the alternative of wrapping wet garbage in newspaper to be deposited in rubbish bins, is impractical as newspapers have ceased to be popular and the volume of trash paper available for wrappings continues to diminish.

The alternative is to buy medium-sized bin liners (ALDI shoppers plus some others already use them). The cost works out as follows: medium plastic bin liners 66x51 (27 litres) for 50 cost $5.23; medium bio-degradable (40 per cent plastic) 55x61 (27 litres) for 30 cost $3.66. At one bin liner per day the cost per annum would be: $38.17 for the plastic item and $44.62 for the bio-degradables - an impost on average of between $40 and $45 which will be carried by the shopper. Moreover, individual butcher shops currently sell their meat in plastic bags. These shops will have to use butcher’s paper or display trays with the added cost of wrapping and displaying. One should ponder on these things before rushing pell-mell to decisions.

The way ahead THIS new Noosa Council is really struggling, with staff shortages, incompetence and financial strain, however, the real cause of the problem goes further back in time. Soon after de-amalgamation, the mayor at the time, Noel Playford, quickly realised that his Noosa Council would not be financially viable, and therefore took some drastic action by reducing his staff by more than 80 employees. As you can imagine, this left the rest of the council staff absolutely overworked, stressed and too scared to complain.

With more over-stressed workers quitting, they are falling even further behind with completion of capital works. So where should they go from here?

Maybe stop wasting money on projects like the biosphere, 'bring back the fish’, community jury and electric buses, would be a good start.

Instead, start by employing sufficient qualified staff to stay on top of your capital works schedule. Another option of course, would be to reamalgamate with the more financial Sunshine Coast Council, but I don’t think that would ever happen as the scars left by de-amalgamation are way too deep to heal. This council needs to forget about their “Zen" utopia and get on with their duty of repairing and maintaining existing roads and infrastructure.

Hands not clean I AM appalled at the stance taken by the Premier of Queensland and the Minister for Mining and Environment (what an anachronism) over the Adini mine Project. The Premier says that the mine will produce “clean coal” at a time when the world demand for coal is plummeting. Clean coal, what rubbish! Coal mining has been going on in NSW since 1797, and clean coal is yet to be found. The Premier also says that the mine will mean jobs. Again rubbish! The only jobs it will produce are 457 jobs, not jobs for Australians, and those taking those jobs will be poorly paid and overworked.

Adini has a very poor track record in India and other places for exploiting its workers, not paying them even the basic wage, and placing them in dangerous situations. It is not going to

‘Our Village’ is green at heart AFTER more than two years of planning, development applications are about to be submitted to Sunshine Coast Council for Our Village Eumundi - a proposed eco-development encompassing the Highway Motors and Butter Factory sites on Memorial Drive, the old railway corridor, and the dwellings on Cook Street in Eumundi.

A development application for stage one and a development application for preliminary approval for stage two will be submitted within the next week with full information.

The details of the development were revealed at a community information session on Monday 5 December where attendees learnt about the coming development.

Our Village Eumundi is the combined vision of the Formosa family team, Louis and Janet Formosa and their two daughters Jenny and Louise Formosa, who are the long-term owners and operators of the very successful Eumundi Parkside and Eumundi Square.

Working with local architects Jolyon Robinson and landscape designers James Birrell Design Lab, project consultant Louise Formosa said she sees the development as a social focal point for the town connecting the community and engaging them both culturally and environmentally.

“Stage one of Our Village Eumundi concentrates on reinvigorating the Highway Motors building,

organic produce, visit complementary businesses such as professional advisors and health and wellbeing practitioners or simply enjoy some ‘up-cycled’ retail therapy.”

Louise Formosa said the hub would incorporate environmental best practice standards such as the OSCA waste composting system, underground water storage and per-

maculture features.

“We are setting some ambitious but achievable sustainability targets including operating ‘off the grid’ within 10 years as a result of solar energy,” Ms Formosa said.

“We also intend to reduce mains water usage by 25 per cent in five years and are working towards hav-

ing stage one of Our Village depositing just 10 per cent of its waste into landfill within this timeframe.

“Environmental values really are at the heart of this development and we’re dedicated to preserving the Eumundi way of life, and catering for local needs while raising the bar in ecotourism.”

School musical sets Charity gets a kick out of Federal funding the streets a-rockin’ The Kick Project founder James Rose with some of the members of the Rohingya Football Team in Malaysia.

DOONAN-BASED charity The Kick Project has received a $16,500 boost to fund a pilot soccer program with Rohingya refugees in Malaysia thanks to the Australian Government.

The funds, coming through the Australian High Commission in Malaysia, will allow the charity to support the Rohingya Football Club which has become a vital part of the exiled Rohingya community in Kuala Lumpur.

The program includes kitting-out the team, providing transport to games and establishing a sports and community hub where Rohingya people can access sporting equipment and coaching.

The Kick Project founder James Rose said young people, and girls in particular, are the long term focus of the initiative and the Rohingya are in dire need of assistance.

“The UN has called the Rohingya arguably the most persecuted group in the world,” he said.

“They’ve been forced to flee their homelands in Myanmar, where they have been made stateless by government decree, and many have lost their lives as a result.”

Mr Rose said as refugees, the Rohingya are targets of extortion and kidnapping is commonplace among women and children.

“The Rohingya Football Club gives the community something to be proud of, as well as a focal point. RFC games present one of the few regular opportunities for the community to gather safely and have some fun,” he said.

“Playing friendlies against other communities also helps the Rohingya assimilate and build inter-community networks.”

RFC co-founder Muhammad Noor said the funding would make a huge difference for Rohingya in Kuala Lumpur.

“Our people face many difficulties.

The RFC program allows us to relax, to get together and helps strengthen our community,” he said.

Mr Rose said he was very grateful to the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur for the support.

“To get the backing of the Federal Government is so encouraging and we are so excited for the Rohingya that they can benefit from this generosity,” he said.

The Kick Project is planning similar soccer-based models in areas of disadvantage and need around the world.

EUMUNDI will come to life on Friday night when the Eumundi School of Rock concert blares through the streets from the School of Arts Hall.

Three School of Rock bands will be joined by Katie Noonan, Jack Carty and the School of Rock teachers The Band of Frequencies to perform on Friday 9 December, from 6pm to 10pm.

Songs to be performed will include favourites such as Weir by Killing Heidi, My Happiness by Powderfinger, AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Good Times by the Easy Beats.

The School of Rock performance will take place on Friday, from 6pm to 10pm at the Eumundi School of Arts Hall, 63 Memorial Drive, Eumundi.

All proceeds from ticket sales will go back into the program so it can still be free for the community in 2017.

The pizzas were not the only highlight of the opening event. Local food producers Peter and Dory from Noosa Reds Tomatoes and Steven and Browyn Richards from Noosa Leafy Greens were thrilled to see their hard work showcased at the opening with film footage running to demonstrate the process behind the fresh food supplied to the restaurant. WtF?Pizza brings together the vision and skill sets of three Noosabased entrepreneurs: renowned chef Matt Golinski, Tim McGary, a successful Noosa businessman, property developer and keen proponent of the organic food movement and Grant Weyer, a businessman with 25 years of experience in the information technology, finance and private equity industries.

Matt Golinski, the well-known and successful Noosa resident, head chef and TV personality, has run some of Noosa's finest restaurants and is a champion of the Slow Food Movement in Queensland.

Smoked meats flavour saver Truly spectacular food.

THE art of smoking meat is experiencing a resurgence in backyards all over Australia, and there is no one better at this century-old technique than Jeremiah Jones.

Head chef at Wood Fire Grill, Jeremiah knows his meat and the art of smoking foods from seafood and fish to ribs.

“Smoking is a great technique to get flavour profile and depth into dishes that you don’t necessarily want to grill or char,” he said.

“Smoking food is a surprisingly simple process and once you get the hang of it, you will be smoking everything you can get your hands on.”

Smoking meat is thought to have been practised all over the globe, as the smoke acted as a preservative and kept away the flies, while also enhancing the flavours of the food.

The practice can also be

used to add flavour to cheeses, breads such as bagels, and even eggs.

“We use a method which can be used to smoke a variety of produce from meats and shellfish, to vegetables, and even cream and yoghurt,” Jeremiah said.

The technique of smoking is generally achieved with smoking chips, which are available in most cooking or barbecue shops, however at Wood Fire Grill we like the distinct flavour of the ironbark we cook with every day, so we use logs straight from the fire.

The process is simple, and you just need to follow this step-by-step guide. Once you master it, you won’t want to stop.

Food smoking step-bystep: Place the food to be smoked into a suitable container that will fit into a larger heatproof dish. For dairy or shellfish, place the container

on a tray of ice to keep it cool throughout the process.

Have the glad wrap ready to go and make sure there is good ventilation or an exhaust fan in the prep area.

Place the log from the fire into the large container and then pour water over the log. This will create a mass of smoke so work quickly to wrap the container and trap the smoke inside. Check to make sure it is airtight.

Leave wrapped for about 20 minutes, or until the smoke clears within the container.

Once unwrapped, the food should have a beautiful smoky smell and taste and may also have a slightly brownish hue in colour.

You can then carry on preparing the rest of your dish.

Tennis kids are champs

REAL estate agent and cricketer Ron Davey from Noosaville recently represented Queensland Gold yet again by being selected in the inaugural Over 50s Nationals held in Sydney.

Despite three wins in a row against all the NSW sides to get into the finals, Queensland Gold came runners-up to another Queensland side, Queensland Green.

Queensland Maroon also had local Bob McGhee playing for them. South Australia and Western Australia were the other teams to compete.

In Queensland Gold’s side they had Jeremy Rhodes from Yorkshire, England, who flew out especially to play for them and then fly home.

Ron said competition was very strong with most games “coming down to the wire” as did the final with Queensland Green 230 to Queensland Gold 212.

Next year the event will be held on the Sunshine Coast

COOLUM TENNIS THERE was a huge turnout for the Coolum Junior Club Championships.

Many tightly contested matches were played and friendly rivalries formed.

Sailing programs for little tackers NOOSA Yacht and Rowing Club (NYRC) will again be offering the renowned Kids Holiday Sailing programs throughout the Christmas School Holiday break.

Starting on 12 December there is the choice of either the five-day Junior Tackers program for the 6-12 year-olds which will run from MondayFriday 9am-1pm each day, or there is the 10am-2pm sailing program that is delivered in the Vagabond Dinghy with

a junior instructor on-board.

Both programs offer lunch and a morning or afternoon snack and the safety of qualified Australian Sailing Instructors and on water safety boats.

After Christmas the Tackers program from 6-12 years will again be offered from Monday 9 January. This fiveday program will run from 9am-1pm each day.

For those that are a bit older, perhaps already have some

sailing experience or maybe they are beginners but can only come a day or two, can book into the regular Holiday Sailing Program in the larger Vagabond Dinghy which will operate from 10am-4pm each day Monday to Friday for two weeks.

Preparing for the busy season Between the

AS we settle into the month of December, our surf clubs are doing two things; preparing for what looks like being possibly the busiest Christmas season on record, and doing a progress assessment of the season so far.

In preparing for Christmas, let's first pause for a moment and extend to our support groups, paramedics, police, coast guard, SES, the doctors and nurses of the emergency teams at our local hospital, a big thank you for being there; and of course all the best for the festive season.

Also, it is good to look back over the months and do the review of the season to date.

Happy to relate training teams - in particular those involved in IRB and Jet Rescue Ski patrols (from both clubs) - have reported steady numbers of volunteers, but they are only too happy to accept more. On the weekend five more, an assessor from Sunshine and crewman from Noosa passed their final inspections.

With some of these teams being involved in 24-hour call-out rosters, keeping up the numbers is of the utmost importance.

Another important project that has been underway for several sea-

sons at Noosa has been the Surf Education Program.

This involves the majority of schools in an area that stretches from Yandina to Gympie, and has on occasions seen representatives visit one or two colleges in Brisbane such as Marist Brothers.

Result - an outstanding success; and the overall number of students that now have a good basic knowledge of surf safety is outstanding.

But most important of all, it gives the students an inside look at life in a surf club: end result - future lifesavers may evolve.

At a recent charity boxing night I had occasion to chat with the president of the local AFL club, Rob Pervis.

During our talk he expressed his desire to see his beloved Tigers Club become more involved within the community.

Well it seems that Rob is definitely a man of his word.

Our emergency rescue teams have just been informed that the AFL has offered the playing field at their clubhouse as an emergency helicopter landing pad. This is community involvement at its best. Well done and many thanks to Rob and his team.

which involved the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

The session went well and attendance was good. The exercise was held at Noosa's Main Beach and our lifeguards were also part of the team.

In preparation for the Christmas break, 40 members of Sunshine completed their final proficiencies and are now ready for their patrol rosters.

“This was a big number so many thanks to all officials who worked this detail,” said club captain Scott Summers.

Sunshine’s annual training program for Under 11s to Under 14s -

affectionately known as Hell Week - will once again commence on Monday and go through to Friday.

This is a week of training, fun, mateship and team building that promises to keep the young members totally active from sun-up to sundown.

It has featured on Sunshine's youth training programs for several seasons and has proven a great success.

Also starting on Monday there will be an intensive training program for their competitors.

Under the supervision of Clint Robinson and his coaching staff of

Alex Austin, Kerri Thomas, Pauline Gleeson and Ryan Paroz, this is aimed at giving the competitors the uplift that will stay with them over the Christmas holiday period; we wish them well.

With a busy competitive season ahead, the timing could be just right.

All members of the Sunshine Beach Club join with Noosa in passing on their condolences and best wishes to Sandy Warren and family on the passing of husband and father Bruce.

"We knew of Bruce and respected his input into Noosa,” said a spokesman.

Young stars in rep team SUNSHINE BEACH SLSC LAST weekend saw a very talented group of young stars from the Sunshine Beach SLSC head to the Gold Coast as part of the Sunshine Coast Inter-Branch Representative Team.

The Sunshine Beach club provided eleven members for the all-conquering Sunshine Coast outfit which captured a record ninth straight Qld Inter-Branch Championship against rival branches Point Danger, South Coast and Qld Country.

The Under 13s-17s teams' carnival is a very unique multi-discipline event with the Pool Rescue competition contested on the Friday night at Palm Beach, and Surf/Beach events held the following morning at Coolangatta.

In the younger age groups, representative rookies Abbie Tolano, Lulu Korac and Francesca McKinley formed part of a very strong water team, with Abbie dominating the Board and Iron events.

While Under 14 competitors Carl Vaughan and Charlotte Crow formed part of a very strong beach sprint team which achieved great success in a number of relay events across the day.

In the Under 15 age group, Ruby Nolan and Zac Bromage who were both in their third representative campaign with the Branch Team, along with their fellow teammates completely dominated their opposition to claim the lion share of points on offer in both the pool and surf events.

With the Under 15 Qld Cyclones Team to reintroduced this season, both have very strong claims for state honours also.

While our Under 17 team members, Olivia Emanuel, Katie Gleeson, Jonty Redwood and Thomas Baker all of whom bring a combined fifteen years of representative experience to this team once again outperformed their branch rivals to ensure the Sunshine Coast’s dominance for another year.

Pool Rescue coach, Brock Redwood, who ensured the team’s largest every victory in the Pool Competition, and long-time Branch Team Manager Craig Law. “This was our club’s largest ever

representation of members in the Branch Team, with selection an outstanding achievement for each member chosen. It really is testament to our club’s surf sports program, and the talents of this very impressive group of athletes,” Law said.

A STRONG team performance has seen Sunshine Beach State School win the Interschool Lifesaving Challenge hosted by Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club last month.

Mid-week visitors to Noosa Beach will notice many local schools participating in Surf Education sessions presented by the Surf Club. This event was the end of term culmination of these popular school programs.

Students took part in sprints, beach flags, surf swimming and a board race.

The final event of the carnival was a relay consisting of eight team members involving swimming, board paddling and running.

According to Noosa Heads SLSC Education Manager Greg McLaughlin, during the term the students have learned how to board-ride, swim, conduct basic rescues, participate in beach activities and have surf awareness.

"The need for the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club to be involved in the community educa-

tion is vital and we enjoy the opportunity to get several schools together to allow the students to showcase the skills they have developed during the program," he said.

Sunshine Beach State School Health and Physical Education teacher Cameron Porter explained that the winning Sunshine Beach team included members who had Nipper experience as well as students who were only introduced to surf sports this term via the school programs.

"To have students demonstrating newly-acquired skills in an enjoyable competitive environment alongside experienced competitors is a great outcome for this program," Mr Porter said.

"In addition to skill development, programs such as these help develop a sense of achievement, self-worth and confidence," he added.

Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club head coach Darren Mercer presented the trophy to the winning Sunshine Beach team and thanked teachers, parents and students for their support of the carnival.

OH what a night it was, it really was! A full house of media, friends and supporters turned up at Sydney’s Freshwater Surf Club last week for the official launch of our film, Men of Wood & Foam, which premieres on Foxtel’s History Channel next Wednesday, 14 December.

Foxtel, Australia’s most profitable television network, have had plenty to celebrate over the years and they know how to throw a party! In fact, we got a hint of what was to come when Wood & Foam posters started to show up on bus shelters around Sydney in the days leading up to the launch. On the day itself, I was a little worried when I turned up at the club for a sound check mid-afternoon to see a very large black cloud directly overhead spitting large drops of rain

on the open air stage where the Band of Frequencies were rehearsing their set with Sixties stomp queen Little Pattie, but by start time the storm had disappeared out to sea and left us with one of those gloriously golden summer evenings that Sydney does so well.

There was a real buzz around the Heritage-listed Freshie club that night, with surfing’s history represented not just by the beautiful boards displayed on the walls, but by the presence of surfboard-building royalty, from pioneers Barry Bennett, Denny Keogh and Greg McDonagh to Thruster designer Simon Anderson. Surfing’s film-makers over the decades showed up too, including Jack McCoy, Tim Bonython, Harry Hodge and Bill Leimbach, while Tamam Shud founder Lindsay Bjerre was there to represent surf stomp musicians in support of Little Pattie.

Former top pro surfer and TV personality Mark Warren, who worked with me and Panga’s Shaun Cairns on

the filming, was master of ceremonies for the formalities, while longboarder and surf culture buff Matty Chojnacki had his stamp all over it, from the classic woody parked outside to the Keyos and Woodsies lining the walls.

I have to confess that I haven’t done the stomp in quite a few years, so may have been a bit rusty, but how could you not go barefoot and stompy on the moonlit lawn as Little Pattie reprised her 1963 hit records.

Yeah, I know - no fool like an old fool - but I don’t regret a minute.

Great night all round, and plenty more to come as the Band of Freq’s tour their surf music act through the summer.

event was winding up in ankle snappers at Maui’s Honolua Bay while at Sunset on Oahu’s North Shore, the Vans World Cup was moving into high gear with top seeds John John Florence and Kelly Slater getting into some thankfully meaty peaks.

The uncharacteristic tiny peelers and long lulls at Honolua couldn’t dim new world champion Tyler Wight’s resolve to end her golden run with another podium finish. The complete power package these days, Tyler found just enough oomph to overcome former world champ Carissa Moore. Although the quality of the surf made the Maui Pro final a bit anti-climactic, it was a fitting finale for Tyler, who I’m sure has more world titles to win in the years ahead.

in China. It was interesting to compare the styles of Honolua Blomfield and former world champ Australia’s Chelsea Williams in their first round match-up in the long, peeling lefts of Wanning.

Chelsea’s power attack on the forehand just couldn’t really get going through the mushy sections, while Honny’s flowing backhand was poetry in motion. Having watched both of these great longboarders grow into their surfing personas over the years, I’d love to see them duke it out in the final for a world crown, but alas the draw will not allow that.

Honolua, incidentally, was an early sign-up for the women’s pro, the Golden Breed Noserider and the junior women (her last hurrah as a grommet) at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing in March, where she will once again lead an all-star Hawaiian women’s team that includes Kirra Seale, Sierra Lerback and the fabulous Schremmer sisters.

Surfers today are blurring the lines between the boards they choose to ride, selecting boards appropriate to conditions, regardless of dimension and design.

These skills will be perfectly showcased by the G&S ‘Switch’,

Hot weather fires up the fish WITH summer in full swing, the long hot days and nights are perfect for heading out for a fish!

In the river, the hot weather has really fired up the Mangrove Jacks. There has been some great fish caught recently and fish right up into the high 50 cm range aren’t uncommon.

While Jacks respond well to live and dead bait, hard bodied lures and big soft plastics are opening whole new opportunities with these fish.

Deep holes and jetties like those found in Noosa sound are perfect for hunting Jacks on lures. Another way to improve your Jack catch rate is focusing your fishing time around the turn of the tide and fishing at night.

Another species that we find good numbers of in summer are the very tasty whiting.

Sand whiting are found on both the beach and the river and have a particular liking to small offerings like worms and prawns.

Another way to target whiting is by using surface lures in the warm shallows.

Whiting can actually get quite aggressive at times and a small surface lure hopper or walked across the surface can provide some awesome action from these speedy fish.

The other advantage of chasing whiting on lures is you tend to catch the better sized fish, in fact there have been some real elbow slapper

Flathead are also in great numbers and there have been plenty of fish landed over the last week that well exceed the upper limit of 75cm. I find the best eating fish are those between 40 and 60cm.

Right throughout this month, pelagic fish such as spanish and spotted mackerel and various species of tuna will be in easy reach off Noosa.

One of the most popular ways of chasing these fish is trolling as it covers a lot of ground and offers a wide variety of lures and baits to the fish.

Another option, besides trolling, is casting at bait schools and feeding fish. Actively chasing feeding fish is one of the most productive methods of chasing these fish and usually gives the best results.

Feeding birds is a surefire way to find the baitfish and the predators can’t be far away.

Once you have located a school of feeding fish, try using a lure such as a 7-inch, brightly coloured soft plastic like the Zman Nuclear Chicken letting the lure sink through the school, generally the bigger fish hang around the bottom of the schools picking up the scraps and injured baitfish that the small ones miss.

For those that love to work the reefs, sweetlip have been in good numbers with trout also hitting the decks, Sunshine Reef has been a favourite with local anglers and has been really producing.

North Reef has been also working well with pearl perch, cobia and plenty of cod on offer.

On the beaches, most anglers are timing there fishing in the early hours to beat the heat and the wind.

Whiting, dart and tailor have all been on offer. Small prawn and worm baits have been great on the dart and whiting while the tailor have taken a liking to pilchards and mullet fillet.

THE Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing is stoked to be hosting the first ever Gordon and Smith ‘Switch’ event as part of its 8 Days of Pure Stoke.

Founded way back in 1959 by Larry Gordon and Floyd Smith in San Diego, California, Gordon and Smith soon became an iconic brand, reflecting design and material innovation, craftsmanship, and inspirational surfing under the feet of such icons as Skip Frye, Mike Hynson and Midget Farrelly.

In 1966, G&S found a home in Australia, always pioneering and remaining at the forefront of surfboard design, more recently represented by leading contemporary longboarders Jye Byrnes and former Australian champion, Dane Wilson.

Pioneering still, Gordon and Smith Australia will present the inaugural G&S ‘Switch’, an invitational event with a difference.

Swathed in secrecy, the mysterious G&S ‘Switch’ will bring 12 invitees and four carefully selected wildcards together for a brand new experience.

Each 20-minute heat will cast four competitors into the waves of Noosa’s famed First Point on identical Gordon and Smith model boards.

But, unlike other similar events, surfers won’t have just one model to ride, but two; one long and one short.

With one board of 9-foot or over, and one of 7-foot or under, surfers will have to bring a diversity of skills
